Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE The WOOLSAFE Mark has gone Green! The WOOLSAFE Organisation has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal and EcoLogo in North America, to enable those WOOLSAFE approved products that are ecologically responsible to be recognised and promoted as such.

The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

Regular Maintenance

Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.

Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Periodic Cleaning

When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approved products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package: WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.

General Rules for Spot Removal • Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth

• Scoop up or scrape off solids

Chemspec Europe is one of the first WOOLSAFE Licensees in the UK to have a ‘green’ product certified. It is expected that other products will follow shortly.

For the widest range of WOOLSAFE approved products www.chemspec-europe.com

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment – if unsure, use solvent first • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards • BLOT, do NOT rub

• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles • When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves. Protective treatments Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular cleaning is still required.

Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDER section.)

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

The original carpet tile

SHEDDING

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.

6

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

• shedding • pulled loops

SPROUTING

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADING

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATIC

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions.

include the measures Preventative introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990). THE STOCKLISTS November 2009

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.

The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course. THE STOCKLISTS November 2009

FLATTENING

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

SOILING

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages

- Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave

sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil

carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.

T HE R EGENCY

Collection

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is BONDED Tip Sheared Level Loop Tip Sheared Level Loop Sheared Level Loop plain colours. a versatile, textured finish that is idealTipfor Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have not stitched into the backing in any way. Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.interfloor.com

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

www.interfloor.com

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Benefits

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

THE STOCKLISTS November 2009

Types

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired

THE STOCKLISTS November 2009

WHAT’S NEW... We’re delighted with the initial response to our two new 100% polypropylene qualities, seen here. They are manufactured using our own very hardwearing, non-fade Edelon Protect yarn, which locks the colour into the product to produce superior stain and bleach resistance as well as being moth proof and non allergenic. Amboise is a 1300g weight available in 4m width with actionbac backing, in a really contemporary palette of six earthy shades, ranging from cream to dark brown. Chaumont Twist is a 960g weight, also in 4m width with actionbac backing. It’s available in rolls and cut lengths and has a wide colour palette, including fashionable solid shades.

We tick all the boxes!

Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to.

Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours.

A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line.

Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.

As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others.

the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality

Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.

Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of the product range to consumers with a market-leading modular POS system which they will deliver and design to suit your store.

Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland.

Furlong believes in working in partnership with their customers to provide products and services that ticks all the boxes.

Harrogate Review - part 2 Flooring is looking to a smarter future David Spragg reports on trends and forecasts

With all the main movers under one roof, Harrogate is the unique time to take the temperature of the flooring trade and assess the key influences for the following season. This year was a surprise. With a recession following some years of disappointing trading performance for flooring, the expectation would have been an emphasis on price, safe sellers and cautious product development.

Not a bit of it.The industry is showing more signs of confidence, intelligent marketing and design aspiration that I can recall for a decade. Three themes emerged from this year’s Show: fashion, quality and fibre. The flooring industry as a fashion business is often talked about by enthusiastic interior designers but the concept has seemed pretentious amid the safe sea of beige that covers most of the real world of high street retailing.

But manufacturers are saying it like they mean it now. I know this because they are spending real money on it.

Merryfield is a cut above the rest with a specialist business in carpet Victoria are looking quietly confident with a fresh approach that has seen strong business performance during the summer and the focus has been on the company s flagship seller Tudor Twist. We ve sharpened it up so we could offer something a little different and we have had a fabulous reaction because the price is competitive too, said Shaun Lewis of Victoria. Tudor Twist has a new specification with a 80/15/5 texture-loc yarn system to give it a crisper look and 18 new colours in subtle contemporary shades have been added. To round off the revamp, a new weight has been added at the top end to offer a 60oz option. The popular Crown Twist has also been re-launched with 11 updated colours.

cutting machines which they design and manufacture in the UK. A track record with making machines for the majors for almost 30 years, Merryfield responded to the recession with a budget machine aimed at smaller retailers. Costing £7,500, the Eco-Wasp accurately measures and cuts 4 and 5m rolls on an industrial strength machine that only needs a standard 13-amp plug socket to get it going. The company makes it easy for retailers by offering a 12-month warranty, after-sales service with 10 service vehicles on the road, and a buy-back policy. Harrogate Review Dickinson Moore have been building their business steadily since their launch three years ago with a range of quality gripper and, more recently, trim and underlay. There was a flood of poor quality gripper coming in from China — if you shook the box you could hear the nails fall out! said Lee Parker (pictured left). We invested in manufacturing plant in China and have our own man out there and we have made sure the quality is exactly what the UK market needs. The company offers gripper products for wood and concrete floors with dual and 3-pin options. More recently, Dickinson Moore has been developing its range of PU underlays, offering 3 weights for carpets and a range of 3 products for laminates.

Asiatic Carpets basks in the creative glow of leading designer Jeff Banks (pictured left) whose design career has covered everything from The Clothes Show on television to a host of fashion and interiors interests. But, according to Jeff, on Sunday afternoons his talent is turned on rugs. It s almost a hobby and I love it, says Jeff. The real pleasure is that Asiatic can turn my ideas into action so quickly with the finished rug just 6 weeks later. Jeff Banks has been working with Asiatic for almost 10 years and the company s current collection has 40 of his designs, with a further 20 coming up in the new year. Asiatic sells nearly half-a-million rugs a year and was launched some 80 new designs plus 40 new options is the highly popular Harlequin range. That update is overdue but we ve spend our time carefully in developing it, says Asiatic s Jeremy Nichols (pictured below, right with Jeff). We really are setting trends here.

Top level designers are working at the heart of the industry – everywhere! We’re familiar with Jeff Banks’ inspiration at Asiatic, Danielle Proud and now trend forecaster Victoria Redshaw at Fun On the Floor and world renown Ulf Moritz at Vorwerk.

The highly intelligent design and trend forecasting skills of Wools of New Zealand’s Joanna Ramsden is informing a range of UK carpet companies including the new kids on the designer block, Contemporary Life.

Joanna has created exciting ‘mood boards’ for Contemporary Life’s ‘fashionistas’ range in its Urban Life Collection to explain where fashion trends are coming from and a similar approach at designer-led Ryalux aims to put colour into context.

Flor by heuga has just appointed leading Turkish/Belgian designer Cenk to inform its creative approach. “Our industry needs to work with the right specialists to get texture and colour right,” says René Nieuwendijk at Flor by heuga. “It’s not about deciding to promote red, it’s about getting the right red, understanding the trends and knowing what is going to sell next year and the year after.”

“We think there is more confidence about design and colour among consumers and we are helping retailers sell into this culture,” says Darren Clanford, creative director at Ryalux. “Flooring is becoming more of a focus of the design of a room.”

Fun On the Floor’s Victoria Redshaw commented: “We have a more savvy consumer base than ever now who are more interested in design and want to be led by experts not celebrities.

“Flooring has been a little slow to react but consumers are ready and there’s a big opportunity here for carpet if manufacturers and retailers are ready to buy in,” she says.

“We think there is more confidence about design and colour among consumers and we are helping retailers sell into this culture” Colour trends are always tricky to report in the carpet sector and much more is talked about colour than is actually sold. “Manufacturers can’t just re-colour the old classics, they need to refresh their collections,” says Victoria but in many cases this freshness is apparent.

Strong shades such as aubergines, mid-to-dark browns, lime greens and ‘acid colours’ are doing well and many shades of stoney hues and greys are appearing in the ranges. “There is definitely more confidence with colour,” says Darren Clanford, “and it is more eclectic with consumers more prepared to mix colours.” But it is noticeable that these stronger colours are selling better when they are toned down to a subtler shade, maybe with a worn look. In the mainstream colour bank, Steve Elliott at Associated Weavers commented: “There is still not a lot of real colour being sold but you can see colours are changing in naturals with more interesting and subtle shades.”

Steve also predicts that pattern will make a comeback which is not widely anticipated in the trade but the continued success of stripes shows that there is consumer appetite for non-plain designs.

Harrogate Review

Attention to texture has been a strong theme of the last two years – a logical trend when patterns, other than stripes, have yet to secure a market and consumers are still a little wary of new colours.

As Andrew Broughton at Brontë commented: “When we wanted to look for something new this year, we thought that rather than colour or design, it was texture that could make a real difference.” And Brontë’s sumptious new chunky yarn attracted key interest at the show. Ryalux have turned texture into an artform and encourage consumers to consider multiple textures in an installation with dramatic effect.

FLOR by heuga is placing a major emphasis on the UK residential market and holds its independent retailers in high regard. We want to overturn some perceptions of carpet tiles, says MD Rene Nieuwendijk (pictured below left with sales director Paul Colton). The company has launched seven new products this year so far — replacing more than half its range — and came to Harrogate with the very latest — a new 80/20 dense cut pile called Country Contemporary to add a new texture to their highly successful Country Classic twist. Also new were updated on-trend colour palettes for both Country Classic and the popular deep-pile Funky Feet range. We want to build a niche in the contemporary market, says Rene, and to get that right you need to work with a specialist. Renown Belgian/Turkish design Cenk is working with the company to create a new culture of contemporary fashion.

Quality comes through recession

“Quality is important as we come out the recession,” says Steve Elliott of Associated Weavers and his company was one of many adding heavier, higher density options at the top of their ranges. In AW’s case, they responded to retailer demand for a heavier weight heather with Tuftex Twist which is 40% heavier than the Scottsdale Twist on which it is based.

FLOR by Heuga have also started recruiting retailers into their Premier Retailer programme — a highlydeveloped partnership which includes a sophisticated Academy for training retailers to inspire their customer and trade them up.

“People have put up with cheap for far too long,” says Steve. “There is more optimism among consumers and more expectation of a better feel in carpet texture.”

And most manufacturers are reporting strong demand for the heavier, thicker weights and are busily adding to their ranges to accommodate the trend. Examples include Victoria’s flagship Tudor Twist adding a 60 oz option,

Edel Telenzo’s new Chelsea, Cormar’s Primo Ultra and Kingsmead’s Cheviot Supreme polypropylene at 1600 gsm. Urban Living’s collection has a 70 oz carpet at the top of its range.

Super heavyweights such as Bronte’s new 115 oz felted yarn and Mohawk’s 95 oz and 100 oz recycled fibres are reported to be doing well. David Cormack at Cormar commented: “When we increase the quality options on a range we’re giving the retailer those all-important opportunities to trade up their customers and there does seem to be more apetite to do this.” Even the underlay people are in on the act with thicker, denser products. Carpenter, for example, have high hopes for their new Ultra-Step product, a 180 kg/cm3 PU foam as compared to the 100 kg of their best-selling Rich-Step underlay.

Focus on fibre

Apart from the wool people themselves, the carpet industry hasn’t gone out of its way to promote what goes on ‘under the bonnet’ of their manufacturing process – but this is changing a little. Fibre and yarn are coming to the foreground much more in the last couple of years and manufacturers are more aware of the marketing potential for promotion and differentiation by talking up the quality of the product components. Polypropylene is posher and wool has more pedigree.

Stainfree synthetics are having a very strong run as the continued overleaf

Georgian Carpets

brought an impressive presentation to Harrogate with a new stand that provided an elegant setting for several new launches. Under the company s Stoddard brand, the new 80/20 Luxor Twist is set to be a big seller with 14 colours including 4 distinctly new tones in 4 and 5m widths. A modern new extendable POS unit will be available with this range. For Georgian, the new Impressions berber range offers three textures of 100% 2-ply wool yarn with 5 colours each including a distinctive new grey while the 80/10/10 Tresco range showed off a new colour palette.

Harrogate Review quality feel rapidly improves and manufacturers of mainstream ranges such as Abingdon and Furlong’s Regency Carpets have seen good growth over the last year or so.

underwrites the integrity of its supply.

As polypropylene has got steadily better, delivering a better feel alongside its performance capabilities, so manufacturers are more keen to promote the synthetic origins of their material. It is interesting that Antron has a high profile in Vorwerk’s marketing now and DuPont in some of Mohawk’s eco-fibres.These names had never gone away but it is a long time since consumers – and even retailers – have been reminded of them.

British Wool offers “Platinum certification” to manufacturers who manage their production with the high standards required to guarantee the origin of their yarn.

Furlong reported their “best-ever” Harrogate while Abingdon launched their new stainfree “test centre” that lets retailers demonstrate the cleanability in-store.

Posher polypropylene is all around and manufacturers are more confident in promoting the fibre not just for its easy clean capabilities. A good example is Cormar’s new heavyweight Primo Ultra, mentioned above. “Retailers love the easy clean story and when you add a really quality feel, they have a great story to tell,” says David Cormack. “Primo Ultra looks and feels like a wool twist.” The wool people may beg to differ a little! But they have been busy building the reputation of their fibre in the marketplace. British Wool’s “Origin is Everything” campaign has been given major promotion following the completion of the Marketing Board’s work with Leeds University on the Life Cycle Analysis of wool that

“It’s all about the pedigree of the wool,” says British Wool’s Brigette Kelly. “Some manufacturers and spinners don’t really know the actual composition of their yarn and this can compromise their standards for resilience and appearance retention for example. They need to consider the value of their product,” she says.

“We are talking about yarn a lot more” says Dalreen Buchanan at Ulster who spin their own yarn and are highly focussed on its quality. “We are encouraging our representatives to discuss yarn integrity and the feedback we have is that retailers say it’s good to know more about the fibre. They feel consumers needed more reassurance.” Steve Evans at Contemporary Life agrees and is working with Wools of New Zealand. “Confidence in the fibre is all important to underwrite the quality we offer. We can trace the fibre to the grower and guarantee its quality.” A final theme at the National Floor Show was the “National” bit. Britain to be precise. There is much more patriotic flag waving going on and it’s obviously commercial to be emotional about this. Dennis Flower reports on this theme in The Stocklists on page 51.

Triple-King have been building up their merchandising business — launched last year as a service to their customers to store, distribute and even load up samples for point-of-sale units around the UK (and not just those manufactured by Triple King). We have had a very good response to the service from leading manufacturers, says Ian Peers. Customers include Associated Weavers, Fells and Edel Telenzo. The Show itself provides a showroom for Triple King s innovative POS designs and star performers this year were the clever, extendable waterfall lectern for Stoddard s new Luxor Twist, a tekkie tower for Manx carpets and 33-slot display for Sensa laminate flooring.

The Floortrain team from left to right are Dominic Ormondroyd, Chris Young, Tony Mann, Phil Darwin.

Floort rain have a simpler sales promotion than some as they offer floorlayers a highly professional assessment package and certification service for free! The scheme is funded by the Government s Train to Gain programme for which 95% of floorlayers will qualify. Floortrain undertakes on-site assessment of experienced workers and evaluates and documents their performance in detail over a four month period. A favourable assessment leads to National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) and City & Guilds accreditation — essential recognition in contract and consumer markets. The NVQ qualification is now required to support the CSCS card scheme which tradespeople need to get on site on contract and commercial sites.

Ball & Young

always attract attention with their superb visual presentation at Harrogate but this year they added extra interest with a display of their profiles and plates. There are people who still don t know us for metals even though we have a long track record in this business, said Ann Shaw. But more than ever, retailers are looking for quality products they can rely on. Under the banner Proudly Made in the UK , Ball and Young were promoting a comprehensive range of aluminium and simulated brass profiles and the campany has been investing more in merchandising and POS to support this sector. Alongside the flagship PU underlay ranges, Ball & Young have also added to their range of rubber underlays with the launch of their new Olympic collection - a range of high performance products which include Super Topaz, Venice and Olympic 3 & 5

Vorwerk had visitors looking up to them with a stunning new display tower more than two metres tall which packed in 192 samples alongside new display photography. The tower includes regular lines such as Fascination collection as well as new ranges including Evolution and the company had a constant flow of visitor interest in the unit which is being offered to retailers on a sales rebate basis. Another focus at the show was on fibre and Vorwerk are increasing their promotion of Antron as a key component of their quality carpets: The hope is that we educate consumers that wool isn t necessarily the most flexible, creative or best performing fibre out there and that manmade fibres such as Antron carpet fibre and other polyamides offer improved softness, style and performance, says Vorwerk s Ian Hammond.

Kingsmead

are reporting more optimism in trading and reflected their confidence with the launch of several new ranges including Lothian a competitive 80/20 in 15 subtle shades and Argyll - a finely crafted 1/8th gauge twist pile carpet in 80/10/10 with a pencil point finish to each tuft and a 12 shade colourbank based on a mineral palette. Triple Twist Berbers have been very successful for Kingsmead so the latest family member, Triple Twist Heathers in 20 natural shades with three quality options is expected to do well. Kingsmead has also launched high-end polypropylenes Cheviot and Cheviot Supreme in nine colours using their Everlon fibre for a soft wool-like feel.

Janser keeps the trade on its toes with constant innovations in installation tools and this year their busy stand launched a real problem solver - the Mozart vinyl trimmer, a hand tool which uses a 2-stage process to bulk cut and then flush cut vinyl welds.

Karndean

has dozens of reasons to be cheerful — three dozen to be precise! The company s popular residential Knight Tile range is 12 years old and to celebrate the occasion, Karndean launched 12 new ranges and supported them with 12 promotional initiatives. The 12 ranges include four new woods — a light honey maple, a traditional Victorian oak, an Edwardian oak and a fresh Native Koa. The other eight cover stone, slate and marble collections and include a number of lighter options in response to consumer demand.

Another clever idea is Perfect Butt — described as the world s fastest scribing tool. A sprung pencil in the centre of a revolving wheel allows fitters to follow complex contours and mark them directly to the flooring to be cut. A sister product, Multiscribe, was also launched at the show — a profile matching tool used to transfer contours from one shape to another with 15 functions including parallel scribe, convex scribe and line block.

Promotionally there is a major consumer press campaign associated with the new range which started last month and stunning new photography with installations in real homes.

“Carpets such as Corona bring high style to any home and as such particularly appeal to design-conscious homeowners,” comments Ian Hammond, Sales Director UK. “As these consumers are the ones far more likely to buy carpet from independent specialists rather than large out-of-town outlets, it makes a great deal of sense for the independent retailer to consider Vorwerk Carpets.” With a four-metre width, Corona is certified by TUV, CE and GUT and features a pile weight of 1,000gm/m2. New Ball’s please! F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s high performance Stopgap subfloor preparation products and flooring adhesives have been specified for the areas surrounding the Centre Court at Wimbledon. As part of an extensive upgrade of the Centre Court, managed by main contractors Galliford Try, F. Ball’s range of products achieved the required excellent levels of finish for rubber flooring in the public areas. One of the UK’s most famous sporting venues, the All England Tennis Club in Wimbledon has been extensively refurbished, including the addition of a retractable roof on Centre Court. As part of the refurbishment project, 2,000m2 of flooring on the walkways, stairs and landings surrounding Centre Court were upgraded.

Since moisture testing on the floor indicated relative humidity levels of above 75%, F. Ball recommended a waterproof surface membrane to prevent moisture damage to the floorcovering. As such, flooring contractors, B.U. Interiors Ltd., installed Stopgap F75 directly onto the subfloor. A solvent-free, two-coat epoxy resin system, Stopgap F75 isolates residual construction moisture or rising damp, allowing the early installation of flooring in fast-track building programmes.

To ensure the safety of the public in the areas around Centre Court, a smoothing underlayment was specified to create a level and even surface on the subfloors. Prior to the application of the smoothing underlayment, the areas were primed using neat Stopgap P131. A general-purpose neoprene primer, Stopgap P131 ensures the best handling characteristics of the underlayment, as well as promoting its adhesion to the subfloor. As the public areas around Centre Court would be subjected to high levels of trafficking and footfall, Stopgap 300 HD was selected for the project. A rapid-hardening, water-mix smoothing underlayment, Stopgap 300 HD was installed directly on top of the primed waterproof surface membrane to smooth out any imperfections in the subfloor.

Completing the subfloor preparation, Styccobond F84 flooring adhesive was used to install the specified Dalsouple rubber floorcovering. Designed to secure resilient floorcoverings in areas subjected to high levels of moisture, Styccobond F84 is a two-part reactive flooring adhesive. When cured, it is resistant to water, oil and grease, providing long-term performance. T 01538 361 633

Quiet strength of gold standard Sonic Gold Excel is Novostrat’s leading high performance underlay for laminate, solid wood and engineered floors, both for domestic and workplace applications.

This extremely durable underlay is a three layer lamination based on the well proven Novostrat high density polyethylene foam, as used in other underlays in the Sonic range, which is the key to its exceptional sound absorption performance qualities and impact resistance. Sonic Gold Excel will reduce noise penetration by up to 22dB.

The floor-side lamination is an effective 100mu LDPE black vapour control layer and the top lamination is a gold foil facing which extends to form a 200mm overlap, on both sides, to avoid any possible acoustic bridging and to facilitate perfect continuity in installation. The higher density polyethylene foam also goes a long way to evening out imperfections in the deck on to which the floor is to be laid. The company’s market strategy is to produce the highest quality products at the most competitive of prices. Sonic Gold Excel may be a ‘top end’ performance product but, in Novostrat’s words, it is still one of the most cost-efficient. T 00353 61-339287 40

News Rapid growth in recycling At the National Floor Show in Harrogate, Kate Chappell, Director, Carpet Recycling UK talked about the growing number of end-uses which are being researched to capitalise on the valuable raw materials which can be recovered from carpets. It is encouraging to see the synergies being developed across different industries in the utilisation of carpet fibres and backing components. The carpet industry is taking the lead in establishing a position of voluntary producer responsibility to increase reuse and recycling rates

In UK carpet recycling, re-use and energy recovery, has grown from an estimated 2,000 tonnes in 2007 to 8,000 tonnes last year. During 2009 some of the end-uses such as equestrian surfaces have been affected by the economic conditions but growth in energy recovery is offsetting declines in other areas. More importantly new end uses are being developed thanks to the efforts of Carpet Recycling UK members, and good progress has been made particularly with wool carpets.

Post industrial wool carpet wastes are now being diverted from landfill and reused in products such as insulation felts and carpet underlay felts. This has provided a significant cost saving for members and the benefits of a valuable material resource being given a new life. Post consumer wool carpets are also finding use in agricultural applications thanks to the benefits of slow release nitrogen and essential minerals from the wool fibres.

Carpet Recycling UK membership has increased to 33 including 8 specialist carpet recyclers across the UK and Ireland. This growth is encouraging but many more members are needed in order to speed the pace of development in researching and commercialising new outlets for carpets, says the organisation. Safety wins sales Health and safety doesn’t usually feature highly on people’s lists of favourite topics, but feedback from members of the Royal Institute of British Architects would suggest that it represents a very real sales opportunity for flooring manufacturers and those wanting to target specifiers. Why? Because all 43,000 RIBA-chartered architects are required to do at least 35 hours of ‘continuing professional development’ (CPD) – ‘training’ to you and me – each year. And of that, at least two hours should focus on health and safety. This type of information is often vital in the specifier’s quest to comply with health and safety and other legal requirements. Statistics published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show that one serious workplace slip accident occurs every three minutes in the UK, at a cost to industry of over £500m each year. Designers have a regulatory duty to consider the intended use of new build and refurbishment projects, including floors - a legal obligation to ensure they specify the right flooring.

Tarkett Eclipse premium floorcovering at Manchester Royal Infirmary

The RIBA CPD Providers Network helps manufacturers and suppliers of products and services cast themselves in the role of ‘educator’, rather than ‘sales outlet’. Becoming a CPD provider helps build trust, while providing a genuinely useful service to specifiers. Health and safety information, particularly if presented say, in the form of a CPD presentation available online, is a potentially powerful hook with which to generate more interest in your product. RugMark backs TV exposé The rug industry came under the spotlight in the recent BBC Three programme Kids for Sale when Stacey Dooley visited Nepal to reveal the widespread issue of child slave labour: children are forced to work for a pittance, making beautiful, hand-knotted rugs for markets such as the UK, for up to 14 hours per day.The programme also visited a RugMark Rehabilitation Centre, where rescued children were shown happy, cared for and enjoying full-time education. Samantha Towle, Director of RugMark UK, the not-for-profit organisation, which helps fund the work in Nepal, welcomes the exposé: “This is a deplorable problem but there is a simple solution – UK retailers and designers must demand that the rugs they buy have our GoodWeave label on the back, and then they can sell with a clear conscience.” She is concerned that many retailers and designers deny the problem exists or think that making charitable donations to Nepalese schools is enough: “The GoodWeave label is the only initiative, which guarantees that independent inspectors randomly check the manufacturers to ensure they do not employ child labour; the GoodWeave label gives the reassurance consumers need and provides a real marketing opportunity.”

For manufacturers wishing to sign up to the GoodWeave label, it is simply a case of getting in touch with RugMark in Nepal and agreeing to inspections; a 0.25% (of export value) levy is charged to fund the inspectors, labels and the schools, rehabilitation centres and other community programmes run by the organisation. Importers pay a levy of 1% to RugMark UK. For retailers and designers there is no charge but, for a small contribution, they can take part in the increasingly active GoodWeave PR and marketing campaign, which targets consumers and informs them of the issues and where to buy GoodWeave labelled rugs. September 2010

by David Spragg

You can’t be in two places at once! The flooring trade faces an unprecedented dilemma as two trade shows are planned for the same week in September 2010.

Industry opinion is split between a choice of events in Birmingham and Harrogate but is unanimous that the trade cannot afford to support more than one show. But there is also agreement that a showcase event is essential in 2010 to aid a fragile recovery in business. A new Harrogate Flooring Show has now been launched for September 5th, 6th and 7th at the Yorkshire venue by leading industry figure David Wildman. His event fills the slot vacated by the National Floor Show event which organisers UBM have moved to the NEC, Birmingham.

David has listed the first exhibitors who have committed to Harrogate which includes Abingdon, Cormar, Furlong, F Ball, Stairrods and several Headlam Group companies.

UBM National Floor Show organiser Andrew Vaughan has told potential exhibitors: “We’ve moved, we’ve told you why, now it’s time to make your decision! We need to act now to bring the show to life and create an event that inspires and makes our visitors want to come back.”

What they say Andrew Vaughan of UBM at the NEC Birmingham

David Wildman of The Harrogate Flooring Show

UBM, formerly CMP, have run National Floor Show in Harrogate since 2001.Visitor numbers increased 23% to a peak of 4,656, but in the last 3 years both exhibitor and visitor numbers have been on the decline. This trend has been experienced ahead of the more recent changing market conditions and much of the rationale is that visitor needs are changing. Visitors cannot afford to take long periods of time out of the office and need more reasons than ever to attend an exhibition.

“By moving the show to the NEC, a more central location, we can offer a much larger visitor audience. From our survey findings, 75% of NFS 2009 non-attendees have said they will visit NFS 2010 at the NEC. We have a vast amount of data, including 10,000 professionals interested in flooring that have previously visited both Interiors and KBB at the NEC. We can also deliver cross over visitors from Autumn Fair which takes place at the same time in other halls. The NEC has a much improved layout to Harrogate International Centre so we can develop our feature areas and educational content, giving visitors more reasons to attend. “By endeavouring to offer more content, we have already signed in some international companies. The important social experience of the show, which I know many are concerned about, will not be lost in Birmingham. We have a dedicated agency who will organise social gatherings in specific areas of the city so both exhibitors and visitors will be networking in the same area.

“This is a bold decision that we have had to take, but our exhibitors are a priority and by moving the show to the NEC, we can offer manufacturers a larger visitor audience ensuring a national show rather than a regional event, delivering more visitors from the previously difficult southern areas. We already have backing from the industry’s main buying groups and know we can deliver a bigger and better event in this new venue. In these difficult times the opportunity to increase business and meet new clients is paramount. “We need to act now to bring National Floor Show back to life, to create an event that makes our visitors want to come back year after year. The show has no future if it carries on in the same format, this move gives us the chance to offer fresh and innovative content which is crucial to the longevity of the industry’s favourite show.

Birmingham has pretty bits too! - and NEC o rganisers are planning a social p rogramme around the city s popular Broad Street and canal area.

The Harrogate International Centre has confirmed our booking for the Harrogate Flooring Show for next September after a huge amount of support from the flooring trade to continue to hold a major event at this venue.

“Many of the major players in the sector have already committed and we are planning an exciting event to inject new life into the format and increase its relevance to the widest possible audience. We're also pleased to announce an agreement with the Harrogate International Centre that means we can offer a two-year fixed price at approx 20% off the 2009 rates for exhibitors who contract in the first year. “My position years ago as a sales representative with Wilton Royal Carpets carried with it a role on the organising committee of the show. I really enjoyed the involvement particularly working with key manufacturers and distributors.

"Next year's event will give me the opportunity to work again with a lot of people whose company I enjoy and work effort I respect. I also hope, with the help of the exhibitors, to be able to bring a little more enjoyment and excitement back to the event, it all seemed rather heavy this year. "Harrogate as a town and a venue really welcome the Flooring Industry and were devasted by the news that they would be losing the show. The re-staging of the event has been received with great delight not just for the revenue that it brings but more for the continuance of the connection that it enjoys with our trade. It's good to feel wanted and valued

“We’re opening the show on Sunday when many independent retailers have more time to visit and we're planning a full Sunday roast and maybe some family activities to make it a real occasion! There will be 10 executive coaches from around the country - organised in conjunction with key exhibitors - to increase the national reach of the event.

Harrogate venue announces £13m upgrade

As the fate of the Harrogate flooring event was being debated, the venue announced a long-awaited £13m upgrade that will transform the Harrogate International Centre (HIC).

The new development, which will start in Spring 2010 and be completed by Autumn 2011, includes two new, industry standard exhibition and event halls totalling 3,400 square metres. The halls will also offer organisers more options in terms of hall configuration and layout because of their design shape. Other developments include a number of external improvements as well as an extended and more prominent main entrance.

The work won’t affect the Harrogate Flooring show in 2010 as the development will take place behind the conference centre on what is currently a car park. the new facilities would be available to the flooring show in 2011.

What you say Survey shows our readers are split on the options for change Retailers responding to our online survey in The Stocklists voted almost unanimously that a UK trade show was essential with a 96% endorsement but they are divided on the great debate as to where it should be. In a result that doesn’t help the decision-makers, 59% of our respondents said they were likely to attend a show if it was held in the NEC while 62% of them were more likely to go if it was in Harrogate. When we asked the question a little differently – which was the “best location” – the NEC went marginally ahead at 39% to Harrogate’s 38% of the vote, while 12% thought Manchester should be considered and 6% opted for London.

“It’s very important to have a national show and there are lots of things we can do to make it a success.”

“Harrogate is staid and archaic. It’s about time we moved forward.”

The decision on dates was much more definite. The biggest result at 38% was for September, nearly double that of the next nearest option of March/April 22%.The June dates originally suggested by National Floor Show organisers UBM came in third at 18% of the vote. So the September timing is the right choice according to our readers but the decision on where to hold the event remains unclear. In more detailed “The NEC is too big questioning, less than half of respondents said the charm of Harrogate town was a deciding factor in coming to the show. and impersonal and it On the NEC, 39% said the venue was dull with poor social amenities but 44% agreed that Birmingham benefited from better access and was a good place for a national exhibition.

Our survey system has a ‘soapbox’ feature and the comments our readers left there reflects the polarised opinions on the trade show issue… “We must keep Harrogate; why let the bias towards the south kill off a decent show? Yes, there were less manufacturers showing this year - but didn't the recession play a part in this? Shows have been tried in the south of the nation many times, all ending in tears,” said a retailer in Northumberland.

‘Harrogate is a nice compact town and very personal. Plenty of close-by accommodation. And there is a comradeship in seeing other trade members around Harrogate. The NEC is exactly the opposite,” said another. “The NEC is far too big and impersonal and needs a lot of people to fill it. If the numbers are not there it seems empty. It has no atmosphere,” said another Northerner.

can seem empty with no atmosphere.”

“Trade shows are essential but there is not enough retail support.”

All we agree on so far is that September is the right time for this event

But other retailers were ready to ‘move on’. “Harrogate perpetuates the archaic & staid reputation that the flooring industry has. It is about time that we stood alongside the other furnishing industries and moved forward,” And a similar sentiment from the North-East: “The strongest views seem to be from those who want Harrogate kept as some kind of 'boys weekend away'.The industry needs to move up into the real world, or should we all still be visiting Blackpool or Brighton! The flooring industry has long been the poor relation when it comes to home décor.”

There was a general sentiment that the industry needs to work together more to support trade events. “It is very important that we have a UK flooring show and there are lots of things we can all do to make a show success, all we have to do is work together,” said one retailer in Northamptonshire who felt buying group AGMs should be held around the event. Another retailer was disappointed at the lack of support: “All manufacturers and suppliers should always exhibit - missing a show means losing trade – and as many retailers should attend as possible.” “Trade shows are essential but there is not enough retail support”, said a respondent in West Sussex. A comment from Aberdeen was interesting: “We should keep it simple. Why waste money on extravagant stands when all we need to see is the products and the service on offer.”

We asked what were the main reasons for attending a trade show and the top answers were “Comparing competitive products” (28%) and “Finding new suppliers” (25%). Only 12% cited “Maintaining relationships” and just 6% go for the social life. The top reason for not attending a trade show was not being able to afford the time away from the business (28%) but the next highest reason (at 24%) was the complaint that not all the main manufacturers attended. from The Stocklists

OF THE TRADE

Chris Melling

MD of Regency Carpets/Furlong Flooring At the moment yes, price is winning due to the economic climate, but it will change as things improve and then stock and service will become the number one issue.

Is this year’s pre-Christmas trading going to be back to pre-recession levels? No I don’t think the market is recovering that quickly. I expect the upturn will only begin about Easter time.

Do you agree there are too many people making carpet now? Probably, but we’ve seen the demise of the Beaulieu Group and there will be more continental casualties soon, I’m sure. So maybe that will help the rest of us.

If you could ask retailers to change one thing, what would it be?

Our biggest challenge is ensuring retailers understand the value of the products they are selling and to work in partnership with their suppliers, so that it is a two-way relationship…. and pay their bills on time!

What’s the single most important key to success in flooring?

Profit, without it none of us can survive. The industry’s insistence on free this and free that and saying they won’t or don’t pay for POS is silly. We must invest in our business and work in partnership with suppliers as I said previously.

“The industry’s insistence on free this and free that is silly. We must invest in our business and work in partnership with suppliers.” Is polypropylene getting so good that wool should be worried?

Polyprops prices are governed by the oil price and we as manufacturers have no control over the price of oil.The possibilities with polyprop are far greater than with wool, but wool still has a big place in our industry. We at Regency are about to re-launch our wool investment following our continued success in polyprop.

Which sector of the market is likely to decline most in the next few years?

Hopefully laminate will continue to decline and we as carpet people can concentrate on the product we are used to and should be making our livings from. 48

November 2009

How much do consumers care about whether a product is British-made?

In the main, customers haven’t got a clue where their carpet is made. It’s the industry who should be supporting buy British campaigns, after all we unlike our Belgian friends use the pound not the euro, and the pound is significantly in our favour against the euro.

“Our biggest challenge is ensuring retailers understand the value of the products they are selling” How important is the National Floor Show to your business?

The Floor Show is extremely important to us at Regency and we are very, very much in support of it staying at “its home” in Harrogate. The NEC is cold and uninviting. However, that being said the missing suppliers at Harrogate and customers who can’t be bothered to attend exhibitions should be ashamed of themselves – it’s our livelihoods that are being affected.

Is price winning over design/quality?

Do you think consumers are prepared to pay extra to protect the environment?

No, In my humble opinion too much is being made of green issues – nobody buys green carpet anymore do they?

If you didn’t work in this industry, what would have been your second choice career?

My dad, god bless him, was a plumber and gas engineer when it was unfashionable, and a very good one at that. He advised me it wasn’t a profession to get into. If you are think you are paying too much for carpet have you seen what a good plumber (if you can find one) charges these days.

What has most surprised you over the years?

When I joined the industry over 30 years ago my little football team were playing in the Northern Premier League against South Liverpool. Now we’re in the real premier league playing against Liverpool FC – for me and my club Wigan Athletic it is unbelievable, dreams do come true.

News Shims save time The new Easyshim from Stairrods (UK) is reducing the time fitters spend butting a carpet up to a ceramic or wood floor in a doorway from typically an hour to less than ten minutes. That was the feedback from carpet fitters calling onto the Stairrods (UK) stand at the National Floor Show and from Martin Southerton , NICF Master Fitter, who was demonstrating the product on the stand. Not only is the Easyshim faster to use but it works out far cheaper than alternative methods. The Easyshim is proving to be a timely innovation given the popularity of under-floor matting and ceramic floor tiles in bathrooms; it also facilitates easy access for wheelchair users and reduces the potential for the elderly to trip over the raised edge of ceramic tiles on entering a bathroom or kitchen.

The new Easyshim creates a gradient in a doorway between carpet and other floor surfaces such as wood, ceramic tiles, stone and marble, in so doing creating a smooth transition from one surface to another. Martin Southerton of Portberry Carpets, South Shields, is a Master Fitter and has quickly become hooked on the product: “Previously, I could spend over an hour cutting strips of plywood, building up a ramp, screeding over it and then having to wait for it to dry; it was always a big problem you just couldn’t avoid. Now I just carry some Easyshims on the van, and can trim and tack one down in less than ten minutes – it’s just a super easy product to use.”

Visitors to the Stairrods (UK) stand were also quick to see the potential for the Easyshim. Other suggested applications included residential homes for the elderly, minimising the risk of tripping over a raised lip, and where wheelchair users need easy access from one room to another. Another use is around fireplaces: if a customer asks for the carpet to cover up any unsightly cement showing around the hearth then simply trim up a couple of Easyshims, tack down and the problem is resolved.

Easyshims are available 36” (91 cms) wide with an 8” ramp (200mm), and are available in three heights to cater for different gradients: 1/4“ (6mm), 3/8” (9mm) and 1/2” (12mm). Used in conjunction with a z-bar, the Easyshim can bridge a gap of up to 32mm, and for carpets which protrude into hallways side shims are available. T 01207 591176

Balta’s shining example The Balta Group, manufacturer of broadloom carpets, rugs and laminate flooring, is making available no less than 88,000 m2 of roof area at its factory in Sint-Baafs-Vijve for a project which will be the largest solar energy installation on a factory roof in the Benelux. The total roof area of all Balta branches in Belgium alone amounts to 61 hectares or 610,000 m2. "So there is still plenty of potential for additional projects in the future", says Jules Noten, CEO of the Balta Group. Enfinity (Waregem), international player in renewable energy, has started today with the installation of this ambitious project. Bert Vanwambeke, Purchasing Director at Balta:

"We finally selected Enfinity because of their proven expertise, references and speedy execution".

This autumn more than 18,000 solar panels will be installed on the factory roof with a total panel surface of some 30,000 m2.The installation has a capacity of 4.2 MWp (megawatt peak). The solar panels will deliver an average power output of 3.6 million KW hours per year. Mike Top, Energy Manager of the Balta Group: "This is equivalent to the power consumption of 1,200 families".

Balta will be able to utilise a part of the green energy for its own business activities. Any surplus can flow back to the public grid. Over a period of 20 years this will avoid 34.6 million kg of CO2 emission.

Enfinity rents Balta’s roof and by means of a building lease for 20 years places solar panels on it. Besides the rental income, Balta has the advantage of a cheaper and stable power bill. Balta is also helping to achieve European goals in the area of renewable energy. Enfinity is able to make these projects a reality thanks to the revenue from the energy produced and the Green Energy Certificates from the Flemish Government.

“Balta’s decision to become itself a manufacturer of green energy forms part of a broader view of sustainability in which the improvement in its energy efficiency and the reduction of CO2 emission play an important role. "As a market leader we take responsibility to reduce our ecological footprint”, says Geert Vanden Bossche, Balta’s Marketing Director. In 2010 Balta anticipates expanding this initiative to other Balta sites in Waregem and Tielt. T 00 56 62 23 16

Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

Flying the flag for British flooring With consumers becoming increasingly aware of issues such as reducing carbon footprint and the need to support domestic producers, the Made in Britain label has risen in value.

Kingsmead’s British-made Lothian range

As a result, UK manufacturers are increasingly publicising the fact that consumers can source product that has not been made overseas and required lengthy transportation to reach their homes.

The British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB) is a prime example among those emphasising this aspect, having launched its ‘British Wool ... origin is everything’ campaign earlier this year. 'We wanted attention-grabbing imagery to stand out in publications and in retail showrooms and so the design of our new show card and advertising is very British and very bold,' said Irfan Khan, BWMB promotions manager. Response from leading consumer interior magazines stated that the tone of the campaign was perfect for the moment, particularly when backed by British-based manufacturing. The BWMB has also launched its British Wool Look Book, available on www.aboutwool.com, showing British textiles in themed lifestyle presentations. 'Our strategy is to promote British Wool products in an inspiring way and boost interest from retailers and consumers,' said Khan.

Kingsmead Carpets states that it has been a licensee of the BWMB for a number of years and features the British Wool 'crook mark' heavily on all sampling. This was seen in the recent launches of Argyll and Lothian within its latest wool twist collection .

In addition, as the economy has become more difficult the company reports it has noticed an increase in patriotism from the public, wishing to support the home economy. As a result, Kingsmead's British made products now carry a union flag with the motto 'Manufactured in Great Britain'.

Brintons is another that publicises its domestic origins and impressive credentials such as being granted a Royal Warrant in 1958. Having been established in 1783, Michael Brinton currently represents the sixth generation of the family to be involved with the company.

“We feel that the buying public understand the benefit of purchasing ‘home grown’ products.” Continuing to produce luxury carpet by use of the best wools, spun and dyed to stringent specifications, the wool from one in eight British sheep is destined for use in the company's products. Its heritage is further emphasised through its archive of over 100,000 designs dating back to 1790 and residential ranges continue to be designed by its inhouse team of experts. Consumers registering their purchase of Brintons' carpets are also invited to visit the Kidderminster factory to view the extensive archives and manufacturing process. Continued overleaf...

Flower on Flooring continued economic climate, we feel that the buying public understand the benefit of purchasing 'home grown' products.

'After all, buying British carpet, the finest in the world, is naturally perceived as supporting the UK economy,' Clarke continued. 'Furthermore "green" issues play a significant part in buying decisions and both current and future generations will be increasingly concious of the fact that whatever they live with underfoot will have a carbon footprint.'

Claire Huby, head of marketing at Ryalux, said: 'Our William Classics collection epitomises classic British style. It is a confident, contemporary range named in honour of our founder,William Lomas – a quintessentially British gentleman. Using the finest quality British wool, this collection of twists, velvets, and plain and striped loops has a fresh colour palette of 72 shades inspired by the very best British design classics.' Featuring four textures to create themes from classic to modern, William Classics is described by the company as a true celebration of British style.

Brintons’ British quality shines out

Russell Clarke, Cavalier Carpets marketing manager, said: 'At Cavalier we take pride in the fact that wherever possible we source our raw materials as close to home as we can, and we are passing that message on to our customers with our new Made in Britain badge which features heavily within our re-vamped POS. Shaun Lewis, sales and marketing director, said: 'This format of labelling will be used across all of our products in the coming months and years, as we believe there is a groundswell from the consumer for buying British. This same theme will then run on all of our point of sale material, sampling and A4 cards.' The company estimates that half of the wool it uses in its products is

use of patterns and textures. Steve Upperton, sales director, said the company's research had shown that UK homeowners recognised it as an institute of British manufacturing. 'We knew we were among the top household brands in carpet, but this came as something of a delight and we were keen to maximise this image via a new corporate identity,' he said. 'With the stylish new logo and motto, we are simply underlining our quality and uniqueness to consumers and we are extremely confident that our new branding will provide a firm foundation for continued success.' Cormar Carpets marketing director, David Cormack, said: 'We launched our British Made logo earlier this year, prompted by our south west salesman who had received feedback from retailers that customers were actively looking for British made goods.' Having received positive feedback for its use on all sample books, swing tags and POS material, Cormack believes consumers are recognising both green issues and the need to support British industry.

'Dealing with a British-based company has many advantages, especially when it comes to service,' said Cormack. 'Our retailers know when they phone, they get through to a UK-based sales office and we actively encourage them to visit the mill and see our manufacturing process.' Employing more than 250 people, the company states that its entire range is produced in the UK and uses wool from British sheep in the majority of its wool-based ranges.

Whitestone Weavers states that it has taken the Buy British move one step further by creating a Made in Yorkshire logo for its expanding range of tufted carpets which are manufactured in Hartlepool. Sales director Phil Hartley said: 'We’re very much focused on supporting our British manufacturers and as well as developing a Made in Britain logo, which will be used nationally, we’re doing a limited edition Made in Yorkshire run for selected stockists and retailers based there. We believe the consumer has come to value products made in this country – and particularly those made even more locally.'

Feature: The Carpet Museum Final fund-raising for 2011 opening

History in the making of carpet Flooring retailers are being invited to help the final push for fund-raising for the realisation of The Carpet Museum in Kidderminster – an exciting £2.8m project that is planned to open in 2011.

Plans for an industry museum have been around since the 1980s when Kenneth Roland George Tomkinson, a famous industry figure, set up The Carpet Museum Trust, but the changing fortunes of carpet manufacturing has made this dream seem elusive.

All that changed in 2004 with the substantial support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and in 2006, the Wm Morrison supermarket group offered a perfect building adjacent to one of their stores – the Grade II-listed Stour Vale Mill in Kidderminster (pictured above left) – the town’s first purpose-built power loom factory built by Lord Ward, later the Earl of Dudley) in 1855. Funding has been forthcoming from the Lottery Fund (£1.67m), Advantage West Midlands and the Kidderminster Educational Trust but now it’s your turn – the Carpet Museum Trust is looking for £573,000 from manufacturers, suppliers and retailers. The Trust is looking to recruit ‘Red Carpet Founders’ who can contribute at five levels from ‘Bronze’ sponsorship for as little as £100 to ‘Gold’ at £2,000 up to ‘Diamond’ at £10,000. Each level offers special privileges for founders which includes free admission and the opportunity to hire the venue for meetings for ‘Silver’ sponsors and above.

Trust chairman Richard Hugh-Cook comments: “We’re inviting contributions to bring the project to its exciting and worthwhile conclusion and share our vision.”

A working power loom will form a centre-piece of the museum – operated in partnership with Grosvenor Wilton Limited - and adjoining galleries will interpret the development of the industry in Kidderminster.

There will be a handloom shop demonstrating hand spinning, winding and weaving and opportunities for hands-on learning about the technical aspects of carpet production. The building will also house the Carpet Archives Centre – a huge design collection and library. There are also displays planned of community and domestic life around the Kidderminster area in the 19th century. Companies and individuals who would like to support the final fundraising for the project should contact the fund raiser Ann Dingley on 07813 172781. News Plate goes platinum The new Platinum Gripper from Floorwise brings back the traditional values of original style gripper, adds some modern touches, and delivers a product that offers the perfect mix of quality, performance and ease of installation.

In pre-nailed for concrete, pre-nailed for wood and dual purpose for concrete or wooden floor varieties, Platinum Gripper features many improvements over your average gripper and once again this will make it a trusted friend for most installers. At 25mm across, the extra-wide Platinum Gripper carries more nails and more pins for a stronger fix and more secure hold on the carpet, while that extra width means damage to skirting is less likely as it is easier to install with nails further from the wall. Not only are there more materials for your pound, Platinum Gripper excels on quality, using a 6.5mm superior five-layer ply core and special zinc coated pins and nails that simply refuse to rust.

“Platinum Gripper proves it’s the many little things that come together as one that make a real big difference,” says Richard Bailey, Managing Director. “Years ago, traditional carpet gripper provided an extremely effective solution for the job required of it but over the years new grippers entered the market at lower price points and in many, quality was sacrificed as a result. With Platinum Gripper, carpet fitters can now return to the good old days with a gripper designed to bring the very best in quality and performance.” T 01509 673974

The British Wool column British Wool Marriott winner Armstrong Carpets – a shop surrounded by history

It was perhaps the polished, mahogany counter, stunning Chinese screen and a period fireplace that many people would simply love to own that told the story of Armstrong Carpets most clearly. Add to those classic features, a wall of sepia photographs showing the shop through the ages and you have a business that has seriously stood the test of time. Way up North in Haltwhistle, Northumberland - geographically centre of Britain and situated within a stone’s throw of Hadrian’s Wall – Armstrong Carpets clearly has ‘real history’ all of its own. Previously having been a general drapers with eighteen staff and stores on both sides of the narrow main street - Armstrongs was clearly a veritable empire in this small town. David and Billy Armstrong, brothers, now run the business originally started in 1926 by two aunts who were milliners and which their Grandfather and Father continued. The hats and cloth have long gone now, today they specialize in carpets and rugs, “We had to modernize 14 years ago and the carpet side was most profitable, so we concentrated on that, we wouldn’t be here if we hadn’t moved the business on,” said David. They came in to the business when carpet squares with a linoleum edge were still in vogue and learned to fit carpet when customers started to request ‘fitted edge to edge’. “Lots of training courses followed that change in fashion,” David admitted. Today, they comment that they continue to cover up hard floors with wall-to-wall carpet, “We must cover 2 to 3 laminate floors a week, it may look nice but it is dusty and cold, people tire of it. Billy said, with David adding “You just can’t beat a good wool carpet – it can get cold up here.” The business is firmly based on customer loyalty but it is perhaps that air of old fashioned service that keeps people coming back. “We know 90% of the people who come through the door but our business also covers an area from coast to coast.” They also travel beyond that on occasion – a previous good customer that moved to Edinburgh asked them to fit his house there and recently once again when he moved to a three-storey townhouse in Harrogate. “We just rolled up the sleeping bags and went,” Billy said. “If the job is worth it, we will travel.” In terms of carpet, they said beige wool ranges are still the winner with the middle-aged sector, “Younger people choose bold colour but usually in cheaper ranges.” Both were pleased that the fashion for Berber was waning, “Bad to fit – particularly when the customer insists on it for the stairs,” said Billy. As a retailer winner of the British Wool Marriott Promotion, they have won a weekend at a Marriott hotel of their choice and a box of wine, which they admit poses a slight problem on how they will share it but they were nonetheless thrilled to be a winner. "It is a good promotion with a quality prize. We shall run it again next year," they agreed.

British Wool offer win-win to retailers with Marriott Prize Draw

The new British Wool Prize Draw Promotion begins this month with equal prizes for consumers and retailers. A consumer drawn as a winner will automatically mean the retailer also wins a weekend break for two people at a Marriott hotel of their choice. There are ten prizes this year – five consumer and five retailer prizes. “We wanted to upgrade the value to the retailer and really get their support behind this promotion. They now stand to win the same prize as the consumer,” said Irfan Khan, promotions manager at the BWMB. There will also be a weekend break for the retailer that returns the most entries.
