Flooring factsheet Adhesives THE ADHESIVES SELECTION CHECKLIST

ADHESIVE TYPES

The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match:

Acrylic/resin • Ideal for plasticised PVC and most modern flooring.

Open time • How long the adhesive needs to form a tacky surface suitable for bonding. The time until the floor may be walked on should also be checked. Odour • Low odour and solvent free (low VOC) products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance profile of older products. Coverage • How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread Application method • Different adhesives may be applied by brush, roller, trowel or spray. Strength • Including how quickly the adhesive will ‘grab’ the floor and how quickly its full strength is developed. Underfloor heating • Most modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but this criteria must be checked where appropriate. Sub-floor • The surface the adhesive will stick to most effectively which may include concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds and plywood and chipboard. While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces. The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the types of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation. Special performance • Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments Air quality and the environment • The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasing replaced by water-based adhesives with low or no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) characteristics.

Bitumen • A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood-blocks and mosaics. Epoxy resin • A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyester resin • Typically a two-part resin adhesive used for wood floors. Polyurethane • An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors. Polyvinyl acetate • Typically used for close fitting joints in timber and laminate floors and panels. Also used to seal a porous sub-floor. Tackifier • An additive product designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive. Water-based adhesive • Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.

SUB-FLOOR PREPARATION The preparation of a sound sub-floor is essential to any installation and any compromise can lead to under performance or a failure of the flooring. Some adhesive systems may seem to cope with poorer surfaces but their performance should not be relied upon to ‘cover all the cracks’, The overall approach should be to prepare the best possible surface before flooring installation to avoid problems and complaints later. The air temperature during installation should be ‘room temperature’ – with a floor temperature no lower than 10°C. The surface should be even, stable, free from cracks. Concrete, asphalt and tiled surfaces must be in excellent condition. Any contamination by old adhesive, polish, grease, oil or chemicals should be cleaned with chemical strippers. Existing floorcovering should always be removed (with the exception of firmly bonded vinyl tiles).

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur. Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.

The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package. It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!

If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports. To contact an inspector in your area call 01943 462127, email: inspector@woolsafe.org, or visit: www.woolsafe.org / Private Householder / Registered Inspectors

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

SPROUTING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDING The original carpet tile

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.

8

• shedding • pulled loops

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

SHADING

STATIC Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

THE STOCKLISTS November 2010

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

PILE REVERSAL

FLATTENING

(SEE SHADING)

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

SOILING Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave

sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED

WOVEN

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.

Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home. THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

SAFE

DURABLE

Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer. Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites. Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Why join? www.flooringone.co.uk Contact: Glenn Harding Tel: 0121 683 1426 glenn.harding@flooringone.co.uk

Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

Associated Carpet Group www.smartercarpets.co.uk Contact: Richard Moore Tel: 01942 271315 rjmoore65@googlemail.com moore@smartercarpets.com

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see what you would actually use

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Increase sales • ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with point-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Access professional services • Business services • Financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings • Regional workshops • Supplier presentations • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

www.numa-online.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Carpenter are already seeing sales results from the launch of their new look. The new brand identity has helped increase awareness and demand for their products in the marketplace. What was critical in creating this new look was to make sure there was consistency across all communications. This can now be easily identified with bright colourful adverts, packaging and literature and a bold brand saying “Carpenter Underlay”.

ROBIN BOWS OUT – NIALL’S UP FOR THE CHALLENGE This month we say a final farewell to Robin Croughton, who has looked after our customers in Kent, Sussex and Hants admirably for many years – we wish him a very well deserved happy retirement. With Robin’s departure come a few changes to our representation in the south. Joining us is Niall Martin, who will look after Hants but also take on Berkshire, Bucks and Oxfordshire from John Constable, who in turn will now cover Kent and Sussex. Like the other members of the team we have welcomed this year, Niall brings with him a wealth of experience, having been an agent for the past 10 years and a rep and retail salesman prior to that. “I am used to working with good quality products like Edel Telenzo and this is a fantastic opportunity I’m really looking forward to.” Niall’s certainly up for a challenge – he takes part in triathlons and half marathons on a regular basis, recently raising more than £1,000 for Help for Heroes.

LET’S HEAR IT FOR WOOL! We’re delighted to be backing the Campaign for Wool, which kicked off last month with the first annual Wool Week. We are currently deciding how best we can show our support and work with stockists to promote our wool carpets – but for now, visitors to our website are greeted with the logo on our home page and can see for themselves just why wool is such a great product!

OUR STRIPES ARE IN PATTERNS

EMAILS ARE IT We’re on the offensive to update our records and contact lists and this time we’re trying to capture as many email addresses as we can. “Email has become an integral part of efficient and cost-effective communications for most businesses,” says operations manager Lesley Inman. So, if you’re reading this and you’re one of our customers – please email Lesley on l.inman@edeltelenzocarpets.co.uk

OUT WITH THE OLD

Our new Tube Collection pattern books for Bakerloo and the updated Piccadilly are now being distributed and have been very well received. Piccadilly already tops our best seller list and looks set to be joined by Bakerloo – the new colours of plum and mulberry have given the ranges a fresh injection of sale appeal.

We’re busy preparing for the installation next month of a brand new computer system throughout the company. Bigger and faster and more comprehensive it’s a major investment in a much needed update which will enable us to deliver a better service on all fronts – most of the changeover will happen in December, so, please, bear with us during the changeover!

Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to. Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland. A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line. As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others. Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.

Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours. Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.

the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of their product range to consumers with market-leading point-of-sale systems incorporating the latest video technology. Furlong believes in working in partnership with their customers to provide products and services that ticks all the boxes.

FlooringNews Beautiful botanical “Dispelling the myth that patterns produced using Axminster weaving are fussy and old fashioned” Axminster Carpets has unveiled Botanica, a beautiful 100% wool patterned carpet in three colourways that brings a delicate, yet fashionable alternative to plain carpet. The beautiful tonal floral scroll of Botanica is perfectly harmonised by Axminster Carpets’ most popular 100% pure new wool berber yarn, providing a subtle take on patterned carpet with a natural overtone. Woven in 3’, 12’ and 15’ widths and with a Heavy Domestic rating, the carpet can accommodate hallways and stairs, small and large bedrooms and living areas with minimum wastage. “Botanica has a timeless quality that makes it perfect for consumers looking for a modern take on pattern,” comments Steve Upperton, Sales Director. “As part of a new wave of carpets dispelling the myth that patterns produced using Axminster weaving are fussy and old-fashioned, Botanica brings the beauty and quality of this traditional technique to a new generation.” “Many consumers want to discover more about the origins and environmental impact of their choices,” continues Steve Upperton. “With our localised production and the use of a natural renewable resource in 100% wool, Botanica has a great story, and combined with the heritage of Axminster Carpets this makes for a proposition that is hard to resist.” T 01297 630650 www.axminstercarpets.co.uk

The British Wool column Sheep in the City – Wool Week is a winner! The carpet was green – yes green. But the day before it had been grey – just who, you ask takes the current up to the minute grey shade, so perfectly in tune with current interior trends and replaces it with green? The answer is Savile Row, which last month covered its tarmac with turf and set two flocks of sheep to stir up the usually tranquil atmosphere and entertain the genial society that usually meanders up its streets. The magnificent ‘Field Day’ event was held as the launch of Wool Week for the Campaign for Wool and it brought all kinds and ages of people to see Sheep in the City. Savile Row threw open its doors and offered all sorts of displays from archive files to the making of knee socks for hunting attire. Wool Week made TV, radio and newspapers internationally – but then sheep were literally everywhere, Selfridges had yellow sheep to match their colours on Monday, Lyle and Scott had model sheep on the Covent Garden Piazza and there were basket weave sheep laden with yarn in Libertys. But it wasn’t just London, all over the UK, there were wool activities and for one week it was a very woolly world. “I think everyone was amazed at the immense response from retailers. They backed the campaign wholeheartedly, fabulous window displays and special events in-store were all part of the effort. We had Harvey Nichols, Debenhams, John Lewis, Jigsaw, Aquascutum, Jaeger, House of Fraser all taking part and this definitely had an impact on the consumer,” Ian Hartley, Chief Executive Officer at the British Wool Marketing Board said. Certainly British Wool is seeing a surge in demand as prices feel the benefit of major promotion and full clearance at sale highlights that interest in wool is rising. “This season, the trend is very strong, the support of the magazines and the trend forecasters has helped to position it and we are already planning more promotions for the Campaign,” said Ian.

Chelsea Harbour Design Centre chooses wool The interior design world is always at the forefront of the fashion and trends for the home and designers from many countries flock to the Chelsea Harbour Design Centre on the riverside in London. Located in spectacular glass domes, minutes away from King’s Road, Chelsea, it is a haven for professional interior designers and architects as well as discerning individuals. A bright space provides the ideal environment for 85 showrooms Wool Week celebrated by and over 400 international Chelsea Harbour Design Centre. brands. At over 90,000 sq ft, it is the largest of its kind in Europe and well-established as a leading design destination. With four floors of exceptional showrooms, it is a unique shopping experience. Under one roof, it brings together a huge choice of fabrics, wall coverings, furniture, lighting, accessories, kitchen, bathroom, outdoor living, tiles and carpets of the highest calibre. It has even been described as the ‘ultimate interior source book’. “It is just brilliant that this interior design centre of excellence has put their backing behind wool and obviously the marketing trends that they can bring to the product ranges are a massive asset to the Campaign for Wool,” Bridgette Kelly at the British Wool Marketing Board said. The team at Chelsea Harbour supported the Wool Week event with enormous style and innovation, featuring a giant Cat’s Cradle made in red wool with hanging swatches pinned to the fibre. The intention was to showcase all the wool choices available within the different stores residing in the centre. They also featured sheep and a trail of hoof prints took visitors on a trail to different wool locations.

Promoting Wool with style at Chelsea Harbour.

“The benefit of this profile building is that the five years ahead have had such an energetic start – promotion is a major part of getting the consumer to choose wool. I hope that all retailers can take these ideas and find their own to help promote wool in their showrooms,” said Bridgette. Sheep in the City – Exmoor Horns on Savile Row during Wool Week

Sheep to chic “We have got a fantastic fibre in wool but it has been under-used and under-sold. We need to do more with wool and Britain’s got the talent to do it with innovation and creativity. We just need to have more belief,” Wool Week has put natural fibre back in fashion according to organisers of the Campaign for Wool – the unprecedented marketing initiative which was instigated by Prince Charles. Major support from over 50 brands, 400 retail stores and thousands of carpet showrooms has given the wool industry the best opportunity it has ever had, according to Ian Hartley, CEO of the British Wool Marketing Board. “It really has had an amazing effect, it has both inspired new interest and revitalised long standing users of wool. The CfW has created a new dawn for the fibre in fashion, interiors and the built environment and shown that if we work together with our global colleagues, we can give wool the future it deserves,” Mr Hartley said. The most memorable event of Wool Week which ran from October 11 – 17th was the grassing over of Savile Row in Central London so that a flock of sheep could graze under the gaze of the world’s media in the heart of the UK’s fashion industry (see picture). The Stocklists attended a celebration at Harvey Nichols in Leeds where store designers have cleverly themed wool products with ‘wanted’ posters of the the ‘Ewesual Suspects’. At the event, top designer Erika Knight said: “This has been a spectacular week to put wool on everybody’s agenda. “We have got a fantastic fibre in wool but it has been under-used and under-sold. We need to do more with wool and Britain’s got the talent to do it with innovation and creativity. We just need to have more belief,” said Erika. The Campaign for Wool was championed by Prince Charles as a response to the dwindling fortunes of sheep farmers who had seen the value of wool fall to levels where hill farmers in particular were finding sheep shearing was no longer viable. The British Wool Marketing Board has been a major UK promoter of course for the flooring sector, working with manufacturers and the Carpet Foundation. In The Stocklists last month, 22 leading manufacturers joined our Wool Week Gallery to showcase some of the best carpet ranges available for retailer promotion during the campaign. The campaign is planned to last five years with ongoing promotion and an annual focus on a October ‘Wool Week’.

Wool campaigners grassed over Savile Row in central London to underline wool’s importance to the fashion and furnishing business. There was excellent media coverage of the event. Far right: Harvey Nichols in Leeds ran a highly creative campaign featuring the ‘ewesual suspects’ using ‘Wanted’ posters around their store to highlight different breeds. 44 November 2010

HARROGATE REVIEW part 2 Last month our review of the Harrogate Flooring Show focussed on the market and economic temperature of the flooring trade. In our second instalment, David Spragg looks at trends in the sector demonstrated at the event.

Necessity is the mother of invention

In times of tough trading, the general rule is that you either make a lot of noise or are never heard from again! Thankfully for flooring, the bunker mentality has not prevailed and companies have upped their game. As a result, it is significant that there have been fewer casualties that many had feared at this stage of the cycle. Whether battling for market share, or simply for survival, major players have not sat back to watch the recession – they have taken the fight to the enemy. And the ‘enemy’ is consumer caution. Key trends we picked out at Harrogate were: more affordability, renewed enthusiasm for polypropylene, the continuing boom in POS investment; and greater attention to branding and position.

More affordability Last year in the darkest days of the recession, some of the brightest launches were reserved for top-end products. The logic appeared to be that the middle and lower market had stopped spending but there was a top 5% who always had the cash and could be persuaded to part with it for a luxury wool product or fine wood plank.

Too much quality stock chasing too little cash was the inevitable consequence so major players have switched to Plan B – entry-level ranges. Several manufacturers have launched ranges at the ‘affordable’ end of the scale – notably including Cormar’s man-made Apollo, some attractively priced wool twists from Georgian, Asiatic’s Stellar Collection, Lano’s budget version of Startwist called Xtra Twist. “You don’t have to launch 30 ranges every time”, says Birger Karlsson. “You just have to make sure you have got it right – the right quality at the right price for the market.” Those manufacturers who like to have all the price points covered have found that the bar at the bottom end has needed to be lowered a little. Margins have not been too badly affected but the lower value of these entry-level ranges risk a dent in overall revenues.

Polypropylene is cleaning up After a buzzing Wool Week and with the UK market still wedded to it’s 80/20s, it’s interesting that polypropylene is enjoying something of a resurgence at the moment. For Abingdon, celebrating their 21st with Stainfree Twist, the benefits of the synthetic fibre are nothing new but their competition has hotted up of late. Furlong Flooring have mounted a major campaign to bring its new Carefree range to wide attention with highly innovative and creative marketing – “the timing is perfect for polypropylene,” says Neil Valentine. “There is a lot of demand at the moment for products which are easy to sell and easy for consumers to buy.” Victoria Carpets surprised some at the show with the launch of its EasiCare range. “We’re pushing very heavily into polypropylene and want more share of this market,” said Sean Lewis.

“Overall, it is fair to say that the flooring industry has risen to the challenge of this market in a much stronger way than most would have predicted – with confidence and courage!”

2010 Many other manufacturers are extending their offerings in a move that reflects more caution in the marketplace and a need to maintain cost competitiveness. But it should also be recognised how much fibre technology has improved the feel and performance of polypropylene considerably in the last five years or so.

Plethora of POS Sustained and substantial investment in point-of-sale displays and merchandising has been a very notable feature over the last two or three years with most of the major manufacturers re-inventing themselves in-store to secure the all-important ‘High Street real estate’ that is so essential to safeguarding their market share. The trend also underlines the increased attention that manufacturers give to independent retailers nowadays. And in a crowded store, every lectern has to earn its footprint. Abingdon, Penthouse, Kingsmead and IVC are among the latest big hitters to unveil new lecterns and wall displays while Furlong’s Regency range has pioneered video presentations on lecterns as well as wall systems. Designing, manufacturing and shipping units to retailers is costintensive so such decisions are not taken lightly – but then nor is the risk of being replaced by somebody else’s shinier stands! The important thing for retailers is to plan your store environment carefully to allow the impact of new displays to connect with consumers – without the clutter of too much store furniture.

Brand new Alongside the investment in new ranges and merchandising, it is also remarkable how many manufacturers have chosen a time of recession to re-vamp their look and feel – overhauling the whole corporate brand. Historically, the flooring sector has been very resistant to change in this area and the financial impact of re-styling merchandising, product labelling, vehicle liveries and so on makes it a courageous decision when times are tough. Impressive recent corporate identity make-overs include Axminster and Brockway but the Harrogate show saw a new shine being given to IVC, Carpenter and Victoria Carpets who have all come up with much more modern and stylish appearances to underline the confidence they have in their brands.

Smooth operators While the carpet sector finds it more challenging to come up with products that are completely new (although Mohawk’s SmartStrand fibre is a notable exception), the vinyl and wood people have been busy in the ideas laboratory. The biggest buzz at Harrogate for vinyl was around the Super-Click technology of the Mei Le Sheng Plastics company whose revolutionary interlocking system for floating floors is reported elsewhere in this magazine. In wood, Artwood are a new entrant into the market with an innovation offering top quality engineered European oak which is finished with oils, waxes, paints and metallic finishes to create a dazzling diversity of designs. Overall, it is fair to say that the flooring industry has risen to the challenge of this market in a much stronger way than most would have predicted – with confidence and courage!

Alpaca Rugs have about the softest sell of anyone in the business with a range of rugs hand stitched from the coats of the Peruvian Alpaca. The Hull-based company offers a unique and striking range of geometric and animal designs, created from the 22 colours of Alpaca hair without the need for dyes. “This is an ultra niche product which never goes out of fashion,” says David Dempster. “They are a real talking point in any store and make an excellent display.” T 01482 631072 www.alpaca-rugs.co.uk

Abingdon had an excuse to celebrate their market leading position in synthetics with the 21st anniversary of Stainfree Twist – “the original and best” says Martin Peace. The product has more than come of age with some nine million square metres of carpet under its belt – sold to some five million customers. But rather than rest of its laurels, Abingdon have introduced a multi-width service across its ranges to “give customers what they want” – and to give retailers an attractive new, wide lectern to hammer the point home. This offer extends across Stainfree, Wilton Royal and Kosset brands. Abingdon also have impressive new wall displays to offer, with modern, curvy, units - colour-coordinated by range. “This is next generation point-ofsale,” says Martin. “We’ve had a fantastic response from visitors.” T 01274 655662 www.abingdonflooring.co.uk

Harrogate Report Computers for Flooring made a major impact at Harrogate with a straight-forward system for sorting out your flooring business – just what many retailers really need to stay on top in tough times. Their ‘Carman’ computer solution is based on the 15 years of real-world experience of Chris England, who runs a chain of three retail outlets and was looking to do it better. He called in software developer Kristian Bailey and the system worked so well, they decided to let the rest of the trade in on the secret. “We have had a phenomenal response from retailers at the show,” said Chris. “They can see how they can really control their business without wasting time on the process.” Carman turns quotes into orders and then invoices, plans fittings, schedules fitters and organises suppliers in a joined-up way of working that is visual and intuitive. The system starts at £4750 but the return-on-investment is typically achieved in less than six months in efficiency gains. “A lot of people have got very excited over this,” says Kristian. “We’re looking forward to helping lots of people to work smarter and quicker.” Pictured are (left to right): Katy Gilvear, Kristian Bailey, Yvonne Bailey and Chris England.

Dickinson & Moore has become a good friend of independent retailers in the UK with a repution as a reliable supplier of gripper and underlay. Now it’s looking to build on that relationship as it diversifies into a whole new product group – carpet tiles. “Retailers recognise the brand and we have a good reputation in the trade so we thought we would diversify in a difficult market,” says Lee Parker. “We’ve got the price absolutely right.” Two new products are being offered at the outset which are unique to Dickinson & Moore – Moonlight in nine colours and T9 in eight colours. The company has said it will develop the range after a good reaction at Harrogate. Pictured left to right are Zac Marsh, Lee Parker and Jon Marsh.

Easylay’s floating sub-floor system offers unique advantages to accelerating ‘difficult’ installations over poor concrete surfaces and floorboards, for example, with a clean, dry technique that allows for immediate floor-laying. The system also guarantees a warm, stable surface with excellent acoustic properties – offering a certified impact noise reduction of 23 decibels. The company’s demonstrations at Harrogate always prove popular. “It has taken time but we have good awareness of what the product can do now,” says Phil Sinclair. “Once people have used the system, they want to use it again.” T 01423 887219 www.easylaysystems.co.uk

NICF played a key role at Harrogate in demonstrations that proved especially popular as the organisation’s master fitters were put through their paces to show tips and tricks of the trade in fitting carpets, vinyl’s and solid flooring. The demonstration area provided by the organisers was exceptionally well presented with good lighting and comfortable “ring-side seating” for visitors. The NICF is a “driving force” in improving the industry’s installation knowledge and skill base and they are keen to grow their membership. Fitters who sign up get free promotion, technical support and business advice and discounts on training at the FITA – the training organisation in Loughborough which the NICF co-founded with the Contract Flooring Association (CFA). 2010 Mayfield Carpets have pointed out that all the fuss about Wool Week shouldn’t overlook underlay. Eco-Felt is a superb product from the company which is manufactured entirely inhouse from waste from the carpet manufacturing operations. The deep, comfortable underlay is 80% wool which is clean and odourless – and for extra environmental credentials, the backing is derived from shredded car tyres. Mayfield’s Chris Welland reports that the production of Eco-Felt at the company’s Rochdale plant has reduced the need for nine skips a day to just four – Prince Charles would be very proud of Mayfield indeed T 01706 639866 www.mayfieldcarpets.co.uk

Georgian Carpets enjoyed a busy Harrogate with new entry level 80/20 ranges Annington Twist and Cherwell Twist. “We know retailers are under pressure and everyone wants a deal,” says Georgian’s Peter Kimmins. “These new ranges ensure that we are covering the whole spectrum of needs across the market.” On the Stoddard side of the stand, the company introduced the Composer Collection as ‘affordable quality’ co-ordinates with a plain, stripe and sculptured option and also the upmarket Manhattan Collection, an attractive 3-ply textured carpet. Lano unveiled new identities for its domestic collections at the show, helping retailers to further maximise the selling potential of its style and performance based carpets. The manufacturer’s outstanding ranges of 10-year stainless warranty carpets now fall under the Easy Care Collection banner, highlighting the day-to-day ease of products such as Startwist Supreme, Fairfield Supreme and Heathertwist Supreme. Five-metre wide woven wilton carpets are now featured under the Wilton Collection and niche products such as Wooltouch and Mayfair Velvet can continue to be found under the Ultimo Collection banner. “Our ranges are renowned in the industry for their performance, style and value and we also wanted to make sure that consumers are fully aware of the individual benefits of each of our carpets while being initially attracted to them through striking imagery and branding,” says Birger Karlsson, UK and Ireland sales manager. “Harrogate proved the perfect platform to launch these new product groups to the trade and we are confident that consumers will find the new structure to our residential portfolio more attractive, easier to digest and simpler to choose from.” T 0032 5665 4000 www.lano.be

Super-Click was a show sensation with the launch at Harrogate of its floating floor vinyl click system. “Everybody is talking about it. We’ve had an amazing response to the concept,” said Lee Carus.

Tapibel reported brisk business during the show. “It’s an important opportunity for us to broaden our customer base and meet new people,” says Mike Packwood. “Our reps inevitably have to concentrate on the existing key accounts.”

Using a revolutionary patented technology of interlocking teeth, SuperClick combines mechanical strength with absolute ease of installation across almost any surface. The product has been developed over the last four years by Mei Le Sheng Plastics in China and the UK is the first market launch from the new Super-Click base set up in Blackburn.

The company sells about a third into the residential sector with the balance going into contract. In housing, stripes have continued to have a good rum while Mike Packwood is seeing growing interest in saxonies through into next year. Tapibel is also moving more towards nylon for contract markets. “There is a growing appetitite for the resilience and appearance retention of nylon,” says Mike, “and we can offer cleaner colours which are increasingly popular.”

Up to eight decors will be available initially and Super-Click is talking to UK partners to develop more colours and options in the future. The planks are 6-inch x 36-inch and are 4.5mm think in total with a 0.3mm wear layer. The interlocking base material is injection moulded from recycled plastics.

Moving mountains Two flooring industry bosses have ‘moved mountains’ to help a child suffering from cerebral palsy towards life changing treatment. Nick Finlay, md of leading independent carpet distributor Carpet Line Direct and John Wright, owner of Leedsbased floorcoverings specialist Holbeck Mills, completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge in aid of the Annabelle Rose Trust. The Yorkshire Three Peaks, which takes in Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent, covers over 42km which Nick and John completed in 11 hours. Ben Wardleworth, the father of Annabelle Rose joined them for the last part of the challenge over Ingleborough. Between them, Nick and John raised nearly £7,000 thanks to personal sponsorships, match funding from Carpet Line Direct and a donation from the Wharefdale and Airedale Friday Lunch group. The Annabelle Rose Trust is supporting 5-year-old Annabelle Rose from Leeds who was born with quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Her parents set up the trust as they need to raise £60,000 to take their daughter to America for specialist treatment that will help her to walk again.

Laying down a challenge Leading carpet manufacturers have significantly strengthened their commitment and financial support to Carpet Recycling UK and its creation of a fully-funded industry body to meet the industry target of 25% landfill diversion by 2015. Renewed focus by the 14 CRUK manufacturing members includes developing more outlets for carpet recycling in the UK, as well as increasing the uptake of carpet recycling generally.

Half empty, half full “There is a growing belief that the market has stabilised” The recession has cost 396 UK based floor coverings companies a third of their value in the latest year

Nearly half a million tonnes of carpet waste go to landfill in the UK each year. Only 5% is currently diverted from landfill.

396 companies in the UK floor coverings industry are worth a third less than they were a year ago in the clearest indication yet of the damage the recession has wreaked on the market. However, in a sign that the recovery is gaining traction, 343 companies in the market have actually increased in value.

CRUK and its membership will deliver its emphasis on increasing carpet recycling volumes through a full programme of work over the coming months. This includes regional networking meetings, entrepreneur events, trials and Government lobbying for a more favourable recycling environment.

David Pattison, author of a special report valuing the top 1000 companies in the market describes how values are changing in the market, “It’s certainly been a tough few years. Values have fallen markedly from their peak but the number of companies that are worth more this year than last is encouraging”.

Managed by Axion Consulting, Carpet Recycling UK is an industrybacked association at the forefront of research and development into new methods for recycling and reusing carpet.

“In all we identified 343 companies that have increased in value quite an achievement considering current market conditions. Their performance adds to the growing belief that the market has stabilised and companies with their house in order can once again prosper and add value”.

Axion’s CRUK Co-ordinator Jane Gardner comments: “Increased effort by the UK carpet sector to boost recycling rates reflects its commitment to tackling this waste stream and its environmental impact. T 0161 440 8325

www.carpetrecyclinguk.com

However, as with all recoveries there are those that struggle to recover as Pattison points out, “396 other companies have lost a third of their value in the latest year. They have such a lot of ground to make up and many are in such dire straits it’s unlikely they will return to their former glory. The post recession market is so highly competitive I would expect a number of these companies to be bought out on the cheap or decline further and eventually be wound up” The new Plimsoll Analysis – Floor Coverings will tell you instantly which companies are prospering in the post recession market place, those set to be bought out and those heading for trouble – across the whole of the market and in the individual regions. It gives an instant performance rating on 1000 companies and highlights those ripe for acquisition. Each company is also valued to show the affect the recession has had on their worth and whether they are emerging or still bogged down. T 01642 626400

It’s in the bag “Fitters starting out will no longer have to borrow!” Floorwise has expanded its range of tools with the introduction of the Straticut and Straticut Vario laminate guillotines and the addition of a great starter tool bag that is ideal for budding apprentices. The Straticut and Straticut Vario laminate guillotines enable fitters to work quickly and efficiently, cutting laminate boards to shape with just a single stroke. Eliminating sawing, both models provide a clean edge, while the Vario version also allows laminate boards to be cut at angles. Keeping dust to an absolute minimum, the guillotines avoid the need to cut the boards outside or away from were they are being installed and are perfect for refurbishment work. Supplied with a balancing angle block to support the far end of the laminate board, both guillotines will cut from 7mm to 15mm thickness and up to a width of 210mm. For apprentices and trainees, Floorwise’s 10 Piece Starter Tool Kit provides an ideal base from which to expand, incorporating a range of tools ideal for everyday carpet fitting. Supplied in a hardwearing rope handle tool bag, the kit features tack lifter, hand scraper, carpet edge trimmer, Dolphin knife and an assortment of heavy duty blades, hammer tacker, knee kicker and gripper shears. In fact, the tool bag includes a complete range of tools for carpet fitting and is big enough to carry other tools as the skill base grows: “Any experienced fitter will have their favourite tools, but these are often accumulated over time and for fitters starting out, the financial outlay often makes it impossible to start working with a full compliment of tools,” explains Richard Bailey, Managing Director. “With the Starter Tool Kit, they no longer have to make do, borrowing tools where they can, instead apprentices and trainees can benefit from a collection of tools designed to meet their needs.” The Starter Tool Kit represents extraordinary value and is available from Floorwise’s nationwide network of distributors. The kit could provide an ideal ‘congratulations’ present for a recently qualified apprentice or trainee. T 01509 673974 www.floorwise.co.uk

Rolls on a roll With over 100,000 carpet deliveries per year, Cormar Carpets run a highly intensive nationwide delivery operation using specially designed demountable ‘swap’ body trucks for efficiency and flexibility. The Bury-based company has just taken delivery of 12 new DAFs under its rolling annual fleet replacement programme. The arrival was timed to meet the increase in demand for carpets leading up to Christmas and those vehicles being replaced will not leave the fleet until January. This planned overlap enables Cormar to optimise its fleet size in line with the high peak of seasonal demand and to maintain a high level of customer service. Seven of the trucks are 15 tonne rigid vehicles and the other five are drawbar units operating at 30 tonnes gross weight with trailers. The rigid trucks, the drawbar prime movers, and the trailers are all designed to carry the same six-metre long demountable box, which allows total ‘interchangeability’ between both types of truck and the trailers. This swap body system adds a high degree of flexibility to the distribution operation allowing fast turnaround at the Lancashire manufacturing site and at the 12 outbase distribution points nationwide. “Over the last 18 months, because of the difficult trading conditions, retailers are relying on us to provide a fast reliable delivery service – now, even more so than ever,” says logistics manager, Craig Marshall. “And this latest investment of over £500,000 in DAF vehicles, coupled with the roll-out of hand held PDA’s to all our drivers over the summer, is helping us maintain high, on-time delivery performance levels to our customers both in the UK and Ireland.“ T 01204 881234 www.cormarcarpets.co.uk

Make a date with the calendar girl Furlong boss Chris Melling is asking the trade to support the Carefree Calendar 2011 to help cancer charities after his wife Carol’’s successful fight back to health over the last three years. “There are many, many charities out there, but this is my little way of saying thank you to two charities without whose help and dedicated care I would have lost my soul mate,” says Chris. “With their dedicated care, she has bravely fought and won her battle and is now on her way to a full recovery.” Flooring companies have already sponsored pages in the calendar to raise money for The Christie Charitable Fund and the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust. Now Chris is asking as many people as possible to buy a copy of the calendar for as much as they can afford to boost the fund. Furlong reps will be asking retailers to contribute - or you can order your copy from Chris (details below), T 01772 316155

Simply synthetic Although synthetic flooring materials were initially perceived as being of low quality, advances in materials and production technology have provided a new dimension that has seen an increase in ranges and driven further investment by manufacturers. One of the main characteristics highlighted by contributors to this article was the ease with which synthetic carpet can be maintained. This was emphasised initially by Lano, which includes terminology such as 'stainless', 'bleach cleanable' and 'easy care' to describe its polypropylene carpet ranges. The company states that these offer long life and lasting good looks and supports its ranges with 10 year stain protection and stainless warranty. Supreme Elegance from Lano

Another example are Stainaway carpets, also manufactured from synthetic fibres and an integal part of Associated Weavers' range of flooring. The 100% polypropylene and 100% polyamide carpets have been designed to add warmth to the home while offering great value for money, the company states. The use of different weights, combined with a wide variety of styles, has seen synthetic carpet become an increasingly popular part of its offering. Using Associated Weavers' latest technology, both types of carpets are treated in a way that means they are impossible to stain with any food or beverage, the company reports. 'We are so confident about this that we offer a warranty of either 10 years or 7 years dependent of the pile content,' it states. 'These synthetic carpets are very popular with consumers as they are great value, more durable whilst at the same time offer a practical and fresh looking finish for the consumer.'

Flamina – Harvest Brown from Vorwerk

Among its latest launches is 100% solution dyed polypropylene Supreme Elegance within its Easy Care collection. This features a deep texture in a two-ply, three-coloured yarn with a choice of 14 shades. Available in 4m width and 1700g per sq m weight, it has been designed to offer a luxurious feel through its textured, long pile that Lano describes as 'unique... separating it from other shaggy carpets on the market'.

“These synthetic carpets are very popular with consumers as they are great value, more durable whilst at the same time offer a practical and fresh looking finish for the consumer.”

retailers respond to industry issues

Taxing times How will the VAT rise and Government cuts affect your business? Is it fair? Will it work? The Chancellor said his spending review was ‘guided by fairness, reform and growth.” The opposition said it was a “reckless gamble”. Who is right in terms of the effect on the all-important condidence of consumers? Are you encouraging consumers to ‘beat the VAT rise’ by buying now? How do you think they will feel later when the taxes go up. How important is VAT to the purchase decision? Vorwerk has developed a range of polyamide carpet, following the European trend to recognise the potential of man made fibres. The company recognises that the UK still widely regards wool as the best material for flooring, but states that other EU countries now regard nylon as the premium product. Vorwerk states that nylon (polyamide) offers added dimension in both texture and colour that cannot be matched by wool.

Will the coalition government’s spending review turn up the temperature on consumer caution with redundancy fears in the public sector and painfully slow growth in private company fortunes. Is the Government doing a good job in difficult times, or is the baby being flushed down the plug hole with the bath water? We’d like to know how you feel the floor trade will do in the run up to Christmas and how ‘Happy’ you expect the New Year to be.

The company has accordingly launched its Fascination collection of polyamide carpet, including Fabula in flokati style. This combines gloss and matt fibres in both long, short and thick yarns. The company states that wool could not provide this diversity and the effect would only be possible as a mixed fibre blend. It also states that polyamide provides diversity of colour reproduction that cannot be matched by wool.

The online survey takes less than four minutes and it’s anonymous and doesn’t need any form filling. Please help us inform the industry.

Victoria is another manufacturer that has recently launched new product using synthetic fibre. Its EasiCare collection includes Twist, Tweed and Saxony, all of which are produced using the company's Colourloc two-ply polypropylene fibre, with a choice of 12 colours. These are supplied with a 10 year stain and wear guarantee.

Visit www.thestocklists.com and click on the survey banner to take part.

Twist and Tweed are supplied in a weight of 33oz, the latter using stippled yarn, while the Saxony is a plain and stippled product in a 55oz weight. All are available in 4m and 5m widths. Victoria estimates synthetic to represent 70% of the UK carpet market and plans to extend its offering in the future.
