Enjoy the magic of our flying carpets
We can’t promise you the dizzy heights achieved by King Solomon’s carpet, allegedly made of ‘green silk with a golden weft, sixty miles long and sixty miles wide’. But at Associated Weavers we are weaving more of our own legendary magic by introducing a superior delivery system to maximise the appeal of our entire carpet collection.
Meet Hyperion and Hercules twist
There’s no classical mythology here. This is our exciting Invictus range. It’s been developed using the very latest yarn technology, combining appealing softness with deepdown durability, for every room. Carrying a full 20-year stain and wear warranty, the unique iVinci SDO StainAway construction will repel
almost anything that’s thrown at it. And if a stain is troublesome, the Invictus 100% bleach-cleanable polypropylene qualities will win the day. The two latest additions are Hyperion, a luxurious super-soft saxony, and Hercules twist, a bi-colour version of the iVinci yarn that gives it a heather-like appearance. As with so many of our products, all Invictus carpets are multi-width in 2m, 2.5m, 3m, 4m and 5m variants. With the distribution of Invictus increasing so dramatically, we’ve introduced a new display lectern for Hyperion and Hercules twist to make sure that these, together with all your Associated Weavers products, really fly out of your store.
Invincible performance. Unbeatable delivery. Just as our product range is constantly improving, so we’ve made substantial investments in our logistics to ensure that Hyperion and Hercules twist reach you quicker than ever. Our transport fleet has been increased by 35 vehicles and, in the UK, our local distribution partner has also added eight new vehicles to make sure we keep up with the demand expected from you and your customers. Wherever you are in the UK including Northern Ireland you will now enjoy
deliveries twice a week, for both rolls and cuts. We have also improved our deliveries to the more remote areas of the country. For distinctive merchandising and POS material, with new lecterns to show off Hercules and Hyperion at their very best, contact your area manager now to place your order. Mythology becomes reality in the world of magic carpets from Associated Weavers.

presenting... Brockway’s fabulous Solar array Brockway has added 10 shiny new colours to its flagship Solar range of wool rich carpets. Solar is probably the best two ply 50oz yarn mix there is. Luxurious yet hardwearing Solar will look good for much longer than the average carpet. “The 80/20% wool/nylon whiter wool gives a vibrant clarity of colour, and the extensive palette makes this one of the finest floor coverings you can buy for the home,” said sales director Shaun Lewis. Solar now comes in 64 vibrant plain colours - popular neutral tones, fashionable greys and stunning exotic colours from deep purples, greens and oranges to gentle pinks, lilacs and blues. New colours are called Celadon (pictured), Ochre, Stoat, Iceberg, Pollen, Nutmeg, Durum, Maize, Truffle and Almond, and all Solar carpets are available in traditional 4m and 5m widths. Combining superb quality and exciting on-trend colours, Solar is designed to uplift and inspire, brightening up the home. What’s more, purchasers can also create their very own unique colour carpet with Solar Infinity, a bespoke colour matching service.
N
Brockway promises to match any colour provided by the customer for minimum orders of just 25 sq metres, in any weight from 40oz right up to 90ozs in the Solar 2-ply yarn, and in 4m and 5m widths. Solar features 80 per cent pure new wool and 20 per cent nylon, which together gives this deluxe carpet its unique strength, making it the perfect choice for heavy domestic and heavy commercial use. Brockway has been designing and producing premium quality, hand finished carpets in Kidderminster since 1964. It combines British craftsmanship using the finest raw materials to ensure the sustainable manufacture of award-winning carpets, which offer great value for money for any budget and taste. New ranges in stock thanks to New Silk Road
Aevita and Himalaya double sided lecterns just £99!
Over 400,000m2 of carpet is now housed at our new warehouse, a facility that is ready to serve UK carpet retailers with quality products backed by first-class service. Whether cut-length or complete roll, our new warehouse will deliver orders direct to your store in just 72 hours, or in some cases overnight. All this is made possible as our 42,000ft warehouse is not only home to some 4,000 rolls of carpet, but also a computer-controlled cutting table, offices and showroom.
We took over the first goods train to leave from Xining for Europe on the China Railway Express or ‘New Silk Road’ as it has become known. This goods railway service marks a new era in trans-Eurasian rail, linking China with European countries and improving shipping times from our factory to our UK warehouse.
All UK accounts will now be handled directly by our UK-based teams, helping to provide better and faster service for all your carpet needs. Email sales@fxcarpets.co.uk for more
Taking the train cuts shipping times by 50% or more over sea travel, so it really is a great way to get our carpets to you faster than ever before. Email sales@fxcarpets.co.uk for more

Ultra fast turnaround with no compromise on quality and choice of design.
To meet the growing demand among installers for design-led quality carpet that can be made-to-order and installed in below average lead-times, Brintons has extended its recently developed innovative QuickWeave series to include two new collections. With the addition of Aurora and Sequence to the series, the QuickWeave offering of three collections (including the Inception range) now provides installers and project designers on a tight deadline with the widest choice yet of woven axminster designs in a broad spectrum of colours that can be supplied in only 6 weeks. Brintons' award-winning design team developed the series to reflect today’s trends with contemporary patterns complementing transitional styles such as plaids, stripes, geometric, abstract and layered design themes. Clever texturing techniques including mottles, striés and fades have been used within the patterns to give depth to the designs whilst optimising practical application for hospitality and other contract projects. QuickWeave broadloom woven axminster carpet is made using the ‘Brintons blend’ of 80% wool / 20% nylon and is available in five quality specifications from 7 to 11 rows, making it suitable for all types of area from light to heavy use. Regardless of specification, the wool element in Brintons’ famous blend results in a luxurious soft feel while the nylon component ensures the carpet will be hardwearing for longevity. Andrew Wilcock, Group Marketing Manager, comments: “These new collections are an exciting addition to our QuickWeave offering which is a big hit with retailers and installers who have contract clients. QuickWeave was a natural step for Brintons as it allows for the creation of the high quality carpets for which we are renowned but within a fraction of the time associated with custom projects.” T 0800 505055 www.brintons.net/quickweave

Grand designs
Heavy commercial luxury vinyl tiles in stunning wood effects from Polyflor’s recently launched Affinity255 collection were chosen to give The Grand Hotel in Swansea a new look. Two authentically reproduced wood plank designs from the Affinity255 range were installed by local flooring contractor DM Flooring and Tiling at the hotel in Swansea city centre. Huckleberry Oak with intense grain detailing and surface texture was chosen for the hotel restaurant whilst the Smoked Walnut design with striking markings was used in corridors as well as in a herringbone design in conference rooms. Michelle O’Rourke, General Manager at The Grand Hotel said: “For our refurbishment we needed a practical yet attractive floorcovering that would enhance the look of the hotel but would also be easy to take care of. Our new Affinity255 flooring has really helped us transform our restaurant and conference suite.” Developed for heavy traffic commercial environments such as the leisure sector, the durable Affinity255 collection features an eclectic mix of 16 authentically reproduced wood plank designs in a wide plank format, incorporating both traditional styles and contemporary trends. The Affinity255 collection of heavy commercial luxury vinyl tiles was designed with a 2mm gauge so that they could be easily installed alongside other 2mm vinyl sheet flooring from Polyflor’s heterogeneous, homogeneous and slip resistant safety flooring ranges where different specifications of flooring need to be installed side by side. The cross linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement (PUR) also protects the floor and supports a simple cleaning regime for hygiene critical areas. T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com

NEWS Soft in style
As the new super-soft carpet collection from Balta Group, Leonis is rolled out across the UK, it is the two exclusive ranges that are providing a major talking point, fuelling exceptional demand from retailers to be part of this new brand concept.
With African inspired names, both Sarafina and Sarabi beautifully encapsulate what the Leonis brand stands for - exceptional underfoot comfort backed by impressive practical benefits and with a portfolio of on-trend colourways. Both Sarafina and Sarabi are constructed using StainSafe Sensit two-ply yarn to deliver two ranges that are not only exceptionally soft, but also offer the durability, easy to clean and bleach cleanable credentials demanded by today’s homeowner. Furthermore, each uses Balta’s TwinBack backing to further enhance the comfort of Leonis styles even further. Its two-layer woven/needle-felt construction offers up to six-times more comfort than standard woven backings, making it one of the softest carpets available. Sarafina comes in a versatile 1,650g/m2 pile weight, with a 15-year stain and 10-year wear warranty for peace of mind. Available four and five-metre wide, the 12 strong palette delivers on-trend shades, from grey and natural tones through to pinks and creams and all tones come with a desirable silk-like finish. Boasting a 20-year stain and 15-year wear promise and the same silken effect, Sarabi is a luxurious 1,900 g/m2 pile weight carpet. Comprising 12 hues that deliver diversity and choice with pastel shades through to popular neutrals and greys, all are available in four and five-metre widths. Both Sarafina and Sarabi are available on a double lectern and through sample books and presenters, so retailers are asked to contact their Balta representative in order to be part of this new super-soft revolution. Beauty box
Following its official launch to the public at this year’s Decorex exhibition, London, Louis de Poortere’s Haute Couture broadloom collection has received significant interest from designers and retailers alike, with the major draw not just a world of beautiful designs, but also the inspirational presenter box in which they are displayed.
Haute Couture holds a far-reaching portfolio with a spectrum of design possibility, as keen followers of the Belgian manufacturer will testify, boasting inspiration from Morocco, Scandinavia and beyond. Now, with the introduction of this new box of tricks, the collection can be showcased without occupying excess space, ideal for designers and retailers who wish to bring customers a wide choice of flooring without the cumbersome POS that often comes hand in hand. The new Haute Couture box is a treasure trove just waiting to be explored, split into WW, CP and CW fibres for ease of demonstration, and holding high quality samples with marketing material to boot. The Haute Couture flatweave range more than lives up to its ‘high fashion’ name, dressing floors in stylish pure wool and cotton blends capable of withstanding castor traffic, while sound reducing and suitable for use with underfloor heating. All spaces, whether residential or commercial, have the opportunity to be enhanced with convention-defying Haute Couture broadloom. Holding numerous intricate designs, including Coral, Giorgio, Jacob and Patch, Haute Couture arrives alongside new Louis de Poortere designs in rugs – Agra Sur, Atlantic and Generation - which were also showcased for the very first time at Decorex. NEWS Hot stuff for floors
F. Ball and Co. Ltd, has launched Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS, a revolutionary development in temperature tolerant vinyl adhesives. This new pressure sensitive adhesive offers instant initial grip, combined with ultra-high bond strength, providing contractors with the familiar reassurance of high initial tack and, when fully cured, it develops the strength to hold vinyl sheets and tiles securely in place across a huge range of temperatures. The water-based adhesive has been specifically developed for use in conditions, which are subject to extreme temperature fluctuations as low as -20°c and up to +60°c, such as conservatories or heavily glazed areas and is suitable for use over normal underfloor heating systems. Extreme temperature fluctuations can cause floorcoverings to expand and contract over time, leading to tenting and gapping. The innovative formulation of Styccobond F49 limits any movement and holds the floorcovering firmly in place. The pressure sensitive nature of the adhesive allows it to continue to build up strength following initial application. In addition, it provides an extremely strong water resistant bond, allowing it to be used in areas subject to water and high humidity, including wet rooms. Formulated to offer easy mixing and effortless application, Styccobond F49 also has a long pot life of three hours and an open time of up to four hours, providing a generous working time for the installation of vinyl floorcoverings even in large floor areas. Styccobond F49 can be used to secure a wide range of vinyl floorcoverings, in both tile and sheet format. It can be applied to structurally sound, smooth, dry subfloors of concrete and sand/cement screed, calcium sulphate, Stopgap smoothing underlayments and plywood. Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS is available in 2kg and 5kg kits from wholesalers nationwide. T 01583 361 633

Back to the future
Ulster’s talented residential design and development team have recently moved to new offices in the award-winning, Museum of Carpet, Kidderminster. Kidderminster is renowned around the world as the heartland of the UK carpet industry and Ulster Carpets have had an established design office in the area for almost 40 years. To this day the carpet industry is celebrated in the town and nowhere more so than in the Museum of Carpet, where hundreds of exhibits offer an insight into this unique world of manufacturing and design. Jeremy Wilson of Ulster said: “We are proud of our heritage and roots in UK manufacturing. It is inspirational to be surrounded by the beautiful exhibits on display at the museum on a daily basis. Whilst it is important to protect the legacy of the Ulster brand and the carpet industry as a whole, we at Ulster are very much looking to the future and focused on innovation in design and manufacturing. We are constantly reinventing our product offering and striving to create beautiful patterns and colours which surprise and delight our customers.” Joining the team in their new offices is Ulster’s most recent appointment, Sue Swannell. Sue takes up the role of Design Archivist and will be responsible ensuring that Ulster’s vast archive of design work is at the finger tips of their globally placed clients and designers.
L to R: Edward Wilson (Chairman), Jean Prosser, Calvin Pope, Lorraine Penlington, Clare Jenkinson, Andrew Gicquel and Primrose Wilson.

Jeremy Wilson continued; “At Ulster we have our place in the carpet history books for the huge difference PSYLO has made to traditional jacquard weaving, which enables us to continue manufacturing in the UK. Museum of Carpet serves as a good reminder of how far we have come, but it is our intention at Ulster to push the boundaries further. ” T 028 3833 4433 www.ulstercarpets.com

Silver success for cork
Set in the iconic venue of the British Film Institute, London, this year saw the return of the House Beautiful Awards, a glittering event that brings together the great and the good of the UK homes and interiors sector.
One of the big winners this time out was Portuguese specialists-in-cork, Granorte, who were nominated across multiple categories and the recipients of a Silver Award in ‘Best Flooring’. This prize went to Vita Décor, launched earlier in 2016 as part of a ‘Cork Goes Digital’ campaign, the collection beating off stiff competition from other established names and earning recognition for the impact brought to interior settings up and down the country. Vita Décor flooring represents the latest in direct to substrate digital printing, presenting designs from intricate parquet to beautiful tiled looks. With acoustic, thermal and sustainable credentials adding to Vita Décor’s appeal, it’s little wonder the House Beautiful panel judged the portfolio as an awardworthy case. Paulo Rocha, Granorte, explains: “We were delighted to see Vita Décor cork flooring pick up a Silver Award at this year’s House Beautiful Awards, well deserved recognition for everybody at Granorte who has been involved in the creation and delivery of this pioneering concept. Vita Décor represents everything that is good about Granorte; design-driven while not forgetting the brand’s roots, we were delighted House Beautiful saw things the same way!” Julia Goodwin, Editor, House Beautiful, was equally impressed: “We were so happy to see Granorte’s reaction at winning this year’s Silver Award in the ‘Best Flooring’ category. We had a huge number of entries, with the Awards having taken a year out, so the Vita Décor collection had to really stand out to gain a place. Congratulations!” Also nominated in the ‘Best Wall Covering’ category was Cork Collection_03, this time from granortedesign, another stable that saw updates and improvements for 2016. The aesthetic and practical qualities of its modular tiles put Cork Collection_03 on a pedestal alongside Granorte’s unique flooring options, offering 3D pattern and texture that few others can achieve.
First previewed at BGNFS then introduced to a wider audience at the Flooring Show, Flair Rugs’ newest and most innovative point of sale is capturing the imagination of flooring and interiors retailers up and down the country. Understanding that space is at a premium in most retail establishments, Flair sought a solution on how it could showcase over 1,800 rug options in a space-saving way, and the new lectern has delivered a concept that has been widely welcomed by retailers eager to make the most of the brand’s impressive portfolio. The new point of sale arrives in the form of an eye-catching low footprint stand, topped with a striking laminated brochure that presents customers with the vast spectrum of designs available from the Flair stable. Crucially, the stand’s dimensions, measuring just 71cm wide x 39cm deep x 102cm high, will come as music to the ears of retailers who often face a battle between what they would ideally like, and what they can actually display in store, this tradeoff a thing of the past as Flair enhances the way in which its products are presented. Gareth Davies, Sales and Marketing Director, explains: “Our new stand and accompanying brochure ensure retailers can showcase Flair Rugs’ autumn/winter collection without sacrificing a significant amount of floor space. Having gained feedback from a large proportion of our retail network, stand dimensions were one of the key drivers in point of sale choice, and for that reason we have kept things sleek, while still eye-catching to draw customers’ attentions.” The new point of sale stand and brochure are now available to the Flair Rugs retailer network, meaning there’s never been an easier, more space-saving way to demonstrate the company’s latest in wool, super-soft polyester and machine-made fibres. Full ahead for Crown
On 1st September, Matt Cripps became Crown Floors’ first full-time area sales representative, an exciting milestone for the brand, and a move that demonstrates the brand’s commitment to providing the very best in service to its UK retail customers.
Business bonanza
Following its success in 2016, floorwise and its network of members have returned with a new and improved Big Bonanza promotion for this Autumn.
Reporting into Gavin Freebairn, Field Sales Manager, Matt joins as permanent sales representative for the Wales, Hereford and South Birmingham territories, and will be dedicating his time to fulfilling the needs and requirements of existing and new retail accounts within the region.
Last year, customers were given the chance to earn free M&S vouchers for purchasing floorwise products, yet this time, each floorwise member has evolved the successful model, developing a rewards package specifically designed with their customers in mind.
Bringing a decade of experience working within the flooring sector, with previous retail roles and at key UK distributors, Matt is a welcome addition to the Crown Floors stable as the Balta Group brand goes from strength to strength.
From wine, beer and gift vouchers, to coffee machines and games consoles, the Big Bonanza Promotion is now on. With qualifying periods determined by each member, any retailer or contractor purchasing a range of great value floorwise products automatically earns gifts relevant to each distributor’s reward offering.
James Caldwell, sales coordinator, Crown Floors, comments: “We are delighted to welcome Matt to the Crown Floors team. He brings a wealth of experience to the role, and will be a valuable addition to our established nationwide network of sales agents.
“We are delighted to welcome back our Big Bonanza promotion following its inaugural year in 2016”, explains Richard Bailey, managing director. “Last year we set out to create an incentive programme that would reward our customers for their business during the busiest months of the calendar and it proved a massive hit.
“Over the past few years, Crown Floors has grown to be one of the most successful brands operating within the UK, and such has been the success, it was becoming apparent that some regions needed someone to service customers on a full-time basis. Therefore, we took the decision to appoint Matt as our first permanent area sales representative, a significant milestone for the brand, and one which we are extremely excited about as we continue to grow our business with the help of fantastic new products, innovative POS and of course, our newly enhanced dedicated sales team.”
“Despite its success with M&S vouchers, our members wanted to create a touch of individualism to this year’s campaign and so each has taken the concept and chosen their own prizes to reward their customers. While the awards are different, the ethos behind the Big Bonanza 2016 promotion remains the same – to acknowledge the valuable contribution made by our customers to the floorwise business.” T 01509 673974 www.floorwise.co.uk

Carpet&FlooringReview
A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!
Wool Week 2016 was just…Baa..rilliant!
The spotlight on wool for the home and the small commercial boutique environment made wool flooring the centre of attention during this year’s 7th Wool Week. The Campaign launched the first ‘Wool BnB’ in Islington - a woolly space which showed the potential of wool to create a warm, comfortable home and also one that was available to rent on ‘Air bnb’! Media titles were also given the chance to stay before it opened to the public and clamoured to get a chance to spend a night in the house which also boasted a garden with its own sleep-in Shepherds’s Hut.
Designed and curated to give real wool maximum coverage in all senses of the word - the stylish town house house cleverly portrayed the sheep as an art form - not just as a provider of the most naturally, sustainable fibre in the world. Carpets gave plenty of wow factor to the young and vibrant space, with Alternative Carpets and its beautiful new Liberty range and Brintons with its perfect plaids - Abbotsford and Abbeyglen ranges - showing the way that carpet can really impress when produced as an area rug with woven edges and wool underlay adding the impressive feel-good cushion. Surrounded by beautiful parquet wood floors there was a definite charm to the framing of the carpets in this environment.
Carpet also took to the wall with stunning wall treatments from Tai Ping Carpets famous for its deep pile, carved and sculpted designs.
The stairway was classically fitted in Roger Oates ‘Whitman’ in soft black - a tailored runner adding the well-known and popular London hallway look.
Adam Carpets hosted the master bedroom floor in the fully fitted style with their ‘Pure Brit’ range and this literally oozed luxury and beckoned visitors to kick off the shoes and feel the benefit of wool.
The good word of wool continued to spread throughout October - proving the importance of showing people how wonderful wool can really be.
The ‘Baa-tique Hotel’ - Chelsea harbour
Across London, by the Thames, is Europe’s leading designer destination - the Design Centre at Chelsea Harbour. Here, a rather unusual hotel opened its doors for Wool Week. The ‘Baa-tique Hotel’ provided a clever and cute tribute to the woolly sheep! This time the floors and rugs were intended for the luxury boutique hotel business - a trend that continues to gain favour amongst travellers that want unique and classy style with good quality. Designer rugs and plain, plush carpets graced the floors of a luxury bedroom, bar, foyer and salon. These smaller hotels provide niche business for the local carpet store that has its eye on soft contract - designers can and do operate at the local retailer level and look for something a little bit different.
There were some really fantastic and positive media coverage of these venues in the national media including The Daily Telegraph, The Evening Standard and Daily Mail online. The leading consumer press attended too - Homes & Garden, Country Homes & Interiors, House and Garden to name but a few and on the all important blogs and social media, well, it was all over the internet! The good word of wool continued to spread throughout October - proving the importance of showing people how wonderful wool can really be.

Marketing insights Monochrome – it’s not just black and white The monochrome palette has been a key trend for 2016 and will continue to dominate interiors in 2017. It’s more than creating striking effects with black and white, this trend includes varying shades of sophisticated and understated greys. Providing the perfect base to strong accent colours - a timeless combination whatever your flooring choice. Adam Carpets, Castlemead Twist with Hugo trend board
Adam Carpets are adding six new colours to Castlemead Twist this Autumn, to celebrate it being certified as a Platinum range by British Wool. The Platinum label signifies that the wool content of the carpet is made from 100% British Wool. “By using only British Wool, we not only make the carpet extremely durable,” says Eamonn Prescott, Sales Director at Adam Carpets, “it also allows us to achieve a cleaner look with our colours. This is important when dyeing light colours such as the new greys that we have added.” For Adam Carpets, like other manufacturers, the monochrome styling includes many grey tones, but Adam have not lost sight of the importance of accent colours. “Although we have added three stunning greys to Castlemead, we have also launched a fresh green and a fun yellow. Both colours look to be very much on trend for 2017,” said Eamonn.
“There’s no doubt that the monochrome trend has become one of the most significant trends in our homes in recent years.” 34 November 2016
“We recently visited the highly influential Decorex show in London and it was great to see the new Castlemead colours that we have selected in evidence, along with our ‘Hugo & Ella’ collection from last year.”

Thanks to Avenue Floors, the ‘monochrome’ approach can be implemented underfoot once more, this time in cushion vinyl form. Cushion vinyl floors are installed wall-to-wall rather than in plank form, which allows for a beautiful seamless look such as that of the headline shot, showcasing Sagres from the Bubblegum & Liquorice range. Cushion vinyl has long championed ‘retro’ black and white checks, but Sagres develops the theme with its intricate mosaic tile effect,

taking inspiration from the continent in offering clean, clinical design through hallways, corridors and kitchens. Not only producing a striking ‘monochrome’ aesthetic, Sagres is also ready to combat the wear and tear of modern-day family life, with floors that are waterproof, slip resistant and sound reducing to meet the needs of any residential space. From fashion to interiors, there’s no doubt that the monochrome trend has become one of the most significant trends in our homes in recent years, in particular in flooring. Having seen a change in the way this trend is being interpreted across both fashion and soft furnishings, the design team at Axminster Carpets has taken inspiration from this monochrome style and added a selection of soft, subtle neutral tones to develop the wool carpet specialists’ newest collection, Hazy Days. Launched this Autumn and unveiled for the first time at the Harrogate Flooring Show, this latest range of 100% wool carpets blends classic monochrome inspired patterns

Brintons True Velvet is a nod to the trend for monochrome with muted shades of cream and stone sitting alongside jet black and space grey. Gone are the days when dark must meet light, deep carpets sit well with dark walls or pale flooring and light décor works well together to create this theme. The Bell Twist series also works with neutrals that draw on pale hides and raw cottons together with fashionable greys to enable you to create the perfect backdrop in any home. Alongside the plain carpets Brintons also has patterned options such as stripes, plaids and more traditional motifs. Whichever spin you want to add to your monochrome design, Brintons will have a carpet to compliment it,

This works particularly well in bedrooms and living spaces where a subtler palette may be required. Comforting and easy to use, neither too cool, nor too warm, this neutral is calm and easy to live with as well as being superbly practical around the home. That’s why Brockway offers a vast collection of 82 fashion grey shades made from a choice of beautiful wool rich, dyed and pure, undyed yarns with twist, loop pile, textured and heather options. And for a dramatic statement, there’s Brockway’s complimentary ranges of bold monochrome plains and stripes for a fabulous contemporary look. Designed to impress, Brockway Dimensions Heathers Black Magic and Black Magic Stripe creates a focal point for instant impact as soon as you walk through the front door. David Cormack, Marketing Director of Cormar Carpets believes the monochrome trend is a coveted look in the world of interior design as it holds a timeless and classic appeal. Although it’s a simple palette, the strong black and white theme adds impact and drama to any room in the home. He explains, “for those who prefer a

Marketing insights Monochrome – it’s not just black and white ‘Monochrome’ is not reserved for hard flooring, striped carpets are a sumptuous alternative when looking to meet this theme. Crown Floors has just the solution in its Lauderdale striped designs, a 100% wool collection that has made waves since its recent inception. Lauderdale Lighthouse, is typically ‘monochrome’ with its end-of-thespectrum black and white hues. Alternatively, if looking to incorporate a degree of subtlety, try Lauderdale White Tiger or Wooden Bridge. These styles are still ‘monochrome’ in nature, but use softer creams rather than crisp whites, and muted greys rather than bold blacks - great for running up stairs with a coordinating plain gracing adjoining hallways and landings. If homeowners are looking to meet this latest interior trend, but don’t want to compromise on the authentic lustre that only pure wool can offer, Lauderdale is the obvious answer. These carpets arrive with a 10-year wear warranty to boot, and a selection of widths for fewer seams.

Emma Hopkins, Marketing Manager at Crucial Trading explains why this trend works so well, “Monochrome is a timeless colour scheme for any home that can be used to update tired rooms. By using the simple structure of black and white shades, you can create a bold design statement that will stand the test of time. Light coloured grout strips can be added to introduce contrast and separation for a subtle take on this trend. “Classic black and white chequerboard flooring also works well in rooms of all sizes, as its bold nature can exaggerate the size of the space. Using tiles, such as Art Select Fiore and Otono, you can create a scene of striking beauty without overpowering the room. “Whereas dark wood effect floors such as Van Gogh Ebony and Art Select Midnight Oak will make the perfect statement floor for a modern and contemporary décor.”
flooring will work as a fantastic base and by keeping the rest of the room simple you’ll have an on trend look that can be adapted by using splashes of colour, clashes of pattern and the addition of decorative objects. Homeowners are now starting to experiment more with the iconic trend being tied into soft furnishings and wall décor by mix and matching patterns to create exciting schemes.” “Trends come and go but there’s always room each season for monochrome interiors and it’s the perfect backdrop for soft tones to help lift and even to place against strong colours,” commented Stella Coyle, retail sales manager of Karndean Designflooring.

Black and white has always been a classic combination in both fashion and interiors and of late, the scandi trend has brought a restrained colour palette back in vogue. However, a cool colour palette does not have to be clinical and as the world embraces the Danish art of 'hygge' or 'cosiness', consumers are rediscovering the benefits of wool in their homes. As such Ulster have seen a rise in demand for its Danish manufactured range, Open Spaces, an 100% loop pile carpet which offers a simplistic and contemporary texture and an of the moment colour palette of neutrals and greys. Open Spaces has serious style credentials with the added benefit of the warmth, practicality and sustainability of wool. Monochrome is a trend which continues to flourish in the Soft Contract market. Ulster's recently launched Fusion range, aimed at this market, is a blend of rediscovered classic designs that have a resonance in many different areas of interior design and architecture, such as tweed fabrics, parquet flooring and ikat textiles.

Innovating into awards
For the second time in three years, Unilin’s forward thinking approach to the manufacture and supply of wood, laminate and LVT floors has been recognised at the prestigious Timber Trade Journal Awards.
Nominated alongside other leading companies, Unilin, famed for its Quick-Step and Pergo brands, scooped the top accolade in the “Flooring Trader of the Year” category, a fantastic achievement as these much coveted awards entered their 20th year. The annual TTJ Awards showcases the timber sector as a modern and forward-looking industry, and it is these values that are shared by Unilin, as it strives to remain at the forefront of innovative flooring design and production. Judged by an independent panel, to secure such recognition for the second time is a considerable achievement, as Nigel McManus, Unilin Distribution (Quick-Step) explains: “As in 2014, we are delighted that all the efforts of our team have been recognised at the TTJ Awards. It takes considerable resources and a committed approach by an amazing team of individuals to ensure we remain at the forefront of the flooring industry and to have our hard work recognised by others is fantastic. We are never a company to rest on our laurels and while we will enjoy celebrating this award, our focus will soon return to the year ahead and hope to secure top spot once again in 2017.” The awards took place on the 30th September at The Brewery, London, with the award picked up by Niall Cassidy, Regional Sales Manager (South), Unilin, picture here (left) alongside guest presenter, ex-England rugby international Martin Bayfield. Recognition for resin
Mapei have been shortlisted at the prestigious annual FeRFA resin flooring awards for “Small Commercial Project of the Year” for their work with Coatech at BDP Architects practice, Bristol.
Mapei’s innovative “Mapefloor Comfort” flooring system in AR/X Grey, was installed to cover 180m2 of flooring in the meeting and bathroom areas simultaneously providing a modern resin flooring solution and acting as a demonstration tool for prospective clients. National Specification Manager Manager Mo Aljan said, “The shortlisting not only reflects how great the Mapefloor Comfort flooring system is, but also all of the hard work Mapei’s technical team and the Installers, Coatech, put in to this project.” Initially the carpet tiles and multiple layers of vinyl tiles were removed exposing the sub base. A cove was installed to all walls in the washroom area ensuring the floor area remains easy to clean and maintain. Mapecomfort rubber mat was adhered to the floor with Mapefloor Pore Filler, then coated with the Mapefloor Pore Filler again. Once this had cured, Coatech applied a coat of Mapei Mapefloor PU 460, a 2-3mm flexible, self-smoothing polyurethane. To finish, two coats of Mapei Mapefloor Finish 58 W, a matt finish polyurethane coating was applied. Coatech said “The Mapefloor Comfort Resin flooring system is a fantastic, innovative product and it was great to be involved in the very first installation of it worldwide and work alongside Mapei on this project.” The comfortable level of flooring is provided from the elastic matting at the base of the system also has excellent soundproofing capabilities, reducing the impact of noise transmission into areas below. The flooring system has a high resistance to wear, making it ideal in offices where abrasion from constant foot traffic and moveable office furniture such as castor chairs is prevalent. Flower on Flooring Vinyl in vogue With flooring increasingly seen as an important factor within interior design, one of the best illustrations of this is the progress made within vinyl designs in recent years, with a number of manufacturers going to considerable lengths to match the latest and emerging popular effects.
Leoline - Toulouse Woodmark
“So for 2017 we are queuing up some great new designs that keep this trend alive, more herringbone looks including an extra-large wood and grey brick styles and a fabulous black and white diagonal marble tile are just some of the introductions planned. We’ll also certainly be seeing a move towards all-over looks and so expect endless weaves and wood effects. These are a great way to add a ‘texture’ to the floor without compressing room sizes or looking out of scale.
Polyflor - Dining Room Hexagon
Following extensive research in this area, Polyflor reports that its experienced product designers have selected a collection of 18 wood designs and 12 stone effects for the new Camaro luxury vinyl tile (LVT) collection.
The refreshed collection features updated slate designs, on trend white, grey and black wood effects, as well as two unique parquet flooring designs with smaller plank sizes for creating more intricate patterns. A versatile range of inlay accessories means that the number of creative combinations of Camaro LVTs “is limitless,” the company states.
The Camaro collection also taps into the trend for concrete effect flooring, offering three designs: Smoked Concrete; Burnished Concrete; and Organic Concrete. These allow customers to recreate the simple, stripped back look of a polished concrete floor which is surprisingly versatile in modern, minimal interior design schemes. Unlike real stone flooring, Polyflor says its LVTs are not cold underfoot and are easily maintained. Avenue and Leoline brand manager Victoria Hemelaer says: “Through 2016 we’ve seen the dominance of grey in colour palettes, but we’ve also witnessed a move towards more expressive decors, with homeowners growing increasingly confident in introducing pattern to their home.
“Heritage looks seem to be on the rise, with bold, character woods looking great and bringing a new dimension to traditional plank effects.”
40 November 2016
“Heritage looks also seem to be on the rise, with bold, character woods looking great and bringing a new dimension to traditional plank effects. Elsewhere, we will introduce new colourways in our hexagonal tiles and mineral effects,” says Ms Hemelaer.
Karndean Designflooring sales director Scott Cochrane says: “There’s been a real trend of late for larger, wood effect luxury vinyl designs for added impact in small and large living spaces alike.”
His company has recently expanded its loose lay vinyl collection with its longest 1.5m plank design. Taking inspiration from authentic European, American and Australian woods including pine, walnut and spotted gum, it has introduced a palette of 12 plank designs for contemporary, classic and traditional decors. Designed to be quick and easy to fit, this means less downtime for homeowners.
“Increasingly, open-plan living continues to be a popular choice, and our Longboard is perfect with its unique size. It also offers excellent acoustic benefits, so very useful when selecting the right floor for multi-level living.
“With neutral and grey tones also dominating this season, our French Grey and Pearl Oak offer the perfect backdrop,” Mr Cochrane concludes.
Following on from the launch of its Floor is the new Playground concept, Tarkett has now introduced more LVT options into its iD Inspiration range.
Colour plays an important part in the new offer, with numerous new hues and shades available, as well as innovative designs such as Metal Frame, a metallic effect mixed on top of pastel colours.
Stores & Shops, Hospitality and Leisure art director Florian Bougault says: “We firmly believe that good design can create a lasting impression on how people experience a space, especially in retail and hospitality environments. With the extensive range of options available in the iD Inspiration collections, flooring can be customized and personalized to create spaces that build brand image and positively shape the customer experience.”

Xylo Flooring says the main reason people love the look of shabby chic is that it gives a building personality, bringing in a range of textures and colours to enjoy. Introducing rustic and vintage furnishings and fittings creates a warm and welcoming feel.
While wooden floors are often chosen for shabby chic interiors, a modern material such as an advanced vinyl flooring with a distressed appearance can work equally well. Being highly practical and easy to clean and by choosing Xylo’s VLVT5431 vinyl flooring in Sandhill shabby chique, the company says this is “a great way to underpin the look”.
It has an appealing, light-coloured distressed wood appearance while being hygienic, practical and built to last. It will also tone or contrast well with a whole range of fixtures and fittings, Xylo Flooring states.
Moduleo UK and Eire managing director David Bigland says: “2017’s hero trend will be geometric design with a huge rise in consumers already opting for this quirky and eccentric look throughout their homes.
“Since the launch of our Moduleo Moods collection earlier this year, we’ve had an incredibly positive response to our triangle, hexagon and diamond shaped tiles in particular.”
Further growth in grey flooring demand is expected next year, he continues, incorporating traditional with a modern twist and ideal for creating a comfortable and welcoming environment all year round. “Classic interior design looks are most definitely here to stay for 2017 and beyond. As vintage and retro trends continue to dominate the housing market, traditional woods are certainly still fashionable for the home.”

Review 2016
Soft sell leads commercial confidence Innovation and inspiration in equal measure The highlights of Harrogate are a showcase of what’s hot in the market right now – the new products that will decide whether this selling season is a success and whats coming through for 2107. The appetite for everything soft shows no signs of slowing so manufacturers are innovating every which way to improve their offer in this area. The show was dominated by major launches in soft including Furlong’s Solitaire (p57) and Cormar’s Soft Focus (p60) – both in polypropylene but with the latest fibre technology to take performance and appearance to new levels. Suppliers are increasing looking to other technologies to build on the success of soft, using fibres that costs a little more but have increased resilience. Polyester, which is still bleach cleanable, is the soft option for Abingdon’s new Deep Feelings (p59) and Cavalier’s Stainless Silken(p60) while the long-term resilience of nylon is the choice for Victoria’s new Lasting Luxury (p55) and the launch of the Silky velour from Manx (p50). A key issue highlighted by manufacturers is that although the extra engineering and more expensive fibres add a little to the cost price, the performance of these products adds a premium which consumers are prepared to pay for – sales of synthetics have moved more up-market. Custom carpet has become an interesting trend with a focus on high-end consumers and soft contract work for retailers using technology previously resolved only for large commercial projects. The successful launch of Brinton’s QuickWeave (p66) program is such that it has now been extended to more ranges and Hugh Mackay have re-vamped their custom business under a new brand Design It with a slick new web-based design platform to inspire retailers and consumers (p49). Bronte continue to promotes its unique ‘made-to-plan’ service (p45) which offers great opportunities to sell complicated carpet plans with less waste and higher margins. The industry is increasingly positive about pattern with some confident range launches from leading players such as Kingsmead’s latest CleanEasy ranges (p58), Ulster’s beautiful Watercolours and Fusion collections (p50), Axminster’s hugely attractive Hazy Days (p44) and the exciting designs from carpet newcomer Contempo (p64). Fells are bolder than most and showed inspired innovation in both pattern and texture with a new ‘tactile yarn’. Among the fashionistas, zig-zag is the new stripe as herringbone comes to carpet! (p46)
Harrogate is riding high as the nation’s favourite flooring show with an attendence topping 3,000 - that’s a 10% increase on last year and a record number of 190 exhibitors. Organiser Wendy Adams commented: “It was the most successful show to date and with more visitors through the door, the atmosphere throughout the whole exhibition was electric. “The aim was to bring together all areas of the industry, from the retail to contract sectors, exhibitors and visitors alike, for three days of business and networking and it has been an unrivalled success,” she said. Neil Valentine of Furlong Flooring backed up the buzz: “I have been coming to Harrogate for decades and I have never experienced a better show.” The debut for flooring’s sister event, the UK Tiling Show proved positive with over 650 unique visitors and more than 1,000 crossing from The Flooring Show to take a look. The organisers are looking to build on the success of the show next year, and have already announced the dates for you to put in your diary, Sunday 17th to Tuesday 19th September 2017.
The British Wool people added to the fashion feel of Harrogate with their superb art installation at the centre of hall C (p51) which captures the confidence and creativity that is all around in the the modern wool business and the fibre’s performance attributes were much promoted both by excellent demonstrations by British Wool and by the Wool Carpet Focus Group who highlighted its ‘unflammability’ (p45). The underlay sector continues to innovate with major brands like Cloud9 (p47) and Interfloor’s Tredaire and Duralay (p61) and are finding smart new ways to increase their appeal so that retailers can make a better sale. Meanwhile QA came up with a genuinely unique new product in the market with the launch of Breathe (p48), which looks a little like a felt but is made out of sawdust and promises to improve indoor air quality.
In LVT, Karndean sets a new trend in long boards (p63) while Distinctive showed their style with one of the most impressive floors on display at Harrogate(p54).

Axminster Flexible Fashion An inspired initiative from Axminster have introduced an exclusive wool range to this Autumn under the “Hazy Days” banner.
This 100% wool range (pictured with North West ASM Jon Richardson) is absolutely up to moment in colour and design. Based on the popular trend of greys and warm pinks there are designs for everyone with patterns ranging from distressed textures and geometrics to classical designs and botanicals all with the characteristic twist from Axminster Carpets. “The feedback has been fantastic from the retailers who have seen the collection,” said Axminster Carpets Marketing Manager Hilary Clements. “The designs really bring patterns into something relevant for today’s consumer and tastes.” There are 30 designs including on trend herringbone, geometric and floral patterns but in a new “intelligent sampling” approach where retailers can choose which samples to show on display and will work best in their store. Axminster also unveiled three new colours in their flagship Devonia range including Diamond White, Latte and Oakwood. 01297 32244 • www.axminster-carpets.co.uk
Penthouse Simple Sells Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best and Penthouse Carpets is still singing the praises of the oneprice tombola they launched a year ago and which has been hugely popular with small to medium-sized retailers – over a thousand units are out there on the high street right now. Four 80/20 ranges are represented with eight gauge Stateside, Wentworth and Vermont with tenth gauge Cumbrian. “These are all attractive carpets, with great quality and all mothproofed,” says Jonathan Gamble of Penthouse. “A single price makes for a simple message and with 72 options altogether there is plenty of choice.” With similar simplicity for synthetics, Penthouse has just launched its Essentials Collection which works across all the main requirements in four appealing ranges – from a 100oz deep saxony called Intuition and its silky sister saxony Glamour to a soft-touch twist Elation and finally Performance which lives up to its name as a hard-wearing 40oz twist. 01706 341231 • www.penthousecarpets.co.uk

Associated Carpet Group Even Smarter The ‘Smarter Carpets’ brand just got smarter. The Associated Carpet Group has had phenomenal success with its own label brand. “It’s one of the main reasons we attract more members,” says Richard Moore of ACG. “The financials are right and the protection offered by own label is essential in today’s highly competitive market.” ACG is one of the fastest growing buying groups and currently has over 220 members and nearly 300 stores. More than 80% of those stores take some or all of the own label package and apart from the commercial considerations it just looks so good! The Group has been polishing this brand with sharper, more modern designs for signage, labelling and point of sale and soon they will be launching an overhaul of their web platforms to provide separate sites for consumers and members. A new dynamic interface on the consumer site is generating higher quality leads for retailers and product products more strongly. ACG keep things simple. If members support the main industry suppliers, then they can guarantee additional rebates and preferential pricing. As a low cost buying group, the returns are extremely healthy for all their members. 01942 825520 • www.smartercarpets.com
Wool Carpet Focus Group Unflammable Fibre The Wool Carpet Focus Group were grabbing the attention of show visitors with some exceptional displays of wool performance including a group of hand spinners showing traditional skills and a ‘test your strength’ bouncebackability machine which shows just how wool springs back to life after crushing. But perhaps the most eye catching – and nose alerting! – was the ‘unflammability’ display in the foyer of the Harrogate halls where a fibre scientist was trying to set fire to wool. Dr Mike Madden of wool research laboratories Enco showed fascinated visitors how candles at 700ºC and matches at 1000ºC could make wool burn. Even a sustained attack by a gas flame lighter failed to evoke much more than smoulder with the flames extinguished as soon as the lighter was removed. “Wool naturally contains nitrogen and some natural moisture both of which are excellent fire dampers,” said Dr Madden. “Wool is a natural fire retardant and doesn’t even produce smoke when it burns. That’s why it’s such a popular choice for carpeting trains and planes. This is just one of the amazing qualities of wool.” www.woolcarpetsnaturally.org
Bronte Cunning Plan Not everybody knows this but…. Andrew Broughton at Bronte would like a lot more retailers to be in on the secret! The company pioneered the ‘made-to-plan’ custom carpet approach which is perfect for awkwardly shaped rooms, especially L-shapes, and difficult halls, stairs and landing installations. You only pay for the carpet that fits – meaning the consumer can afford a better carpet than they would otherwise and the retailer has a higher value sales and an easier fit with no waste. “Because it is such a unique service, a lot of people in the trade still don’t know it’s available,” says Andrew. “Yet the savings can be substantial and customer satisfaction is very high. People who have used us once for this always come back again. If retailers send us the room plan, we can tell them straight away if it will work well for them.” The service is available across 21 qualities in any colour so the options are almost unlimited – and include wool carpets with some of the finest finishes in the business. SEBO Suction Science SEBO’s success story is based strongly on their partnership with the people who make the carpet. “The main manufacturers almost only recommend us,” says Kevin Hockney of SEBO, “and that because increasingly we form part of an after-sales service that ensures that proper carpet maintenance keeps their products performing well year after year.” Certainly at The Flooring Show, many SEBO vacuum cleaners were in evidence as exhibitor vacuumed their stands before the show opened. There’s a lot of science in the SEBO machine including a variable height and unique brush design so that the suction gets right down to the base of the pile to loosen dirt effectively. The machines are offered on special terms to stores in a highly professional package that enhances the retailers reputation for professional carpet care but with SEBO doing all the work fulfilling the orders! 01494 465533 • www.sebo.co.uk
Cybergold Rating on Television First James Corden, now Cybergold goes stateside with TV exposure that is set to make a major difference to a specialist company that has become one of the strongest players in anti-slip products for rugs. The US version of shopping channel QVC will be marketing the Cybergold’s Rug Control anti-slip matting early next year, buying 12,000m2 of the product after extensive testing across all their competitors. “It’s a very nice order to get but also a great endorsement when a major organisation with the very highest standards of product testing and selection makes such a big commitment by choosing us,” says Nick Burger of Cybergold. Cybergold started selling though the QVC channel in the UK two years ago and has seen strong sales with the added effect that retailers see more interest in the brand on the High Street with greater awareness among consumers. 01494 761814 • www.cybergolduk.com
Fells Pattern at its Best Last year Fells decided to “boldly go” where no flooring company had been before – re-branding and overhauling its presentation in dramatic style with some of the most eye-catching and innovative point of sale in the industry. It’s worked well for them with a lot of renewed interest in the company. That kind of courage shows through in Fell’s commitment to distinctively different carpets and their new ranges at Harrogate proved a major draw. A key innovation is a new “tactile yarn” that is woven into the fabric to give it a textured effect that aligns with the carpet pattern itself – like the registered embossed treatment that’s so authentic in LVT. New Isadora Wilton uses a mixture of frieze and fine heatset yarn to help define a tile effect texture with a Morrocan motif that is becoming a fashionable trend in interiors. Textured tartan is another novel application. Then there’s Studio Wilton which uses sparkly and shrink yarns for a sculptured effect. “These are interesting, stand-out products for retailers to have in their stores to get attention,” said Carl Cummings. “This is pattern at its best – strong and inspirational for people who want to do something different with their floor.” 01977 662211 • www.fellscarpets.co.uk Visitor Mohammed Zamin of T & H Carpets with Fell’s latest patterns

Ball & Young Horse Power! Ball & Young are galloping ahead in the underlay stakes as new imagery is rolled out across the business to add to the distinctive character of the Cloud 9 brand. The exciting photo of a team of thoroughbred horses has been seen across the centre-spread of this magazine and was the backdrop to the company’s stand at Harrogate (pictured left with B&Y’s Ann Shaw). The imagery is being used for the domestic range of Cloud 9 products while the contract collection is being marketed proudly with a pride of lions as the lead image. Next, the equine image will be appearing across the sides of five new delivery vehicles that roll out next month. The product branding itself has been upgraded with stronger colours and a new logo appears on all the ranges denoting ‘Ultra-fresh’, an anti-microbial treatment exclusive to Cloud 9. But don’t worry, wild horses wouldn’t stop Cloud 9 continuing to advertise with those attractive, tattooed young ladies who have become synonymous with the brand - two new girls feature in the next campaign! 01536 200502 • www.underlay.com
Metro Members’ Makeover Metro offers instant makeover for its members with a mobile marketing system that has been a big hit. The Carpet 1st vehicle has a full studio built in, including large format printing machines, and the technology to transform retail premises with professional signage, banners posters and ticketing. “It’s an incredibly popular service and once members have used it, they always come back for more,” says Steve Depport, the buying group’s operations manager. New members get a free package of services immediately with £600 to spend on marketing materials. Steve says the group is in a buoyant mood right now having enjoyed a period of steady growth and he has noticed the growing appeal of own label options to protect retailer’s margins. “Retailers like the way we work,” says Steve. “They get lots of benefits but can choose how involved they want to be. We just stay in the background to make sure they can do better business.” 01204 393539 • www.carpet1st.co.uk

QA Breathe of Fresh Air QA have breathed new life into the underlay market and enhanced the air quality of homeowners with a unique new technology that was a stand-out product at The Flooring Show, Harrogate. Breathe is an underlay that looks and feels like a conventional textile felt but is made almost entirely out of sawmill waste and is easy to handle and cut. Unlike rubber and PU, the material is breathable and when it is used on floorboards it has been tested to filter out 95% of dust – a real benefit on old, draughty boards and for allergy sufferers.

Priced similarly to PU, the 8mm German-made Breathe underlay has a very consistent thickness and doesn’t stretch and it is rated for heavy traffic. “This is a unique product with special benefits to really enhance the air quality at home – but it’s also an excellent high performance underlay,” said Garry Attmore of QA. Merryfield Floods of Interest “The industry is investing,” says Syd Merryfield, “and that’s a very positive sign that the market is holding up well for carpet distributors and retailers at the moment.” Merryfield engineering are the leading supplier of cutting machines for distributors, wholesalers and retail groups and while they started 2016 knee deep in floods during the severe storms in Leeds last winter, they’ve more than kept their heads above water this year with a strong order book and sustained interest in the latest technology. A full range of UK-made machines cater for cutting carpets and grass, slitting vinyl and rolling sheet material and Merryfield offer unrivalled expertise in flooring which has been their specialism for decades so the trade relies on them for advice on specifying equipment and its maintenance. 01422 373799 • www.mcarpetcuttingmachines.co.uk

Hugh Mackay Interactive Imagination "Imagine there’s carpet heaven, it’s easy if you try”…. at least it is at Hugh Mackay whose stand was dominated by a huge image in axminster of John Lennon and his famous lyrics. This is the company’s easy custom service called ‘Design It’ which offers true uniqueness which can be designed online by retailers - or by customers themselves (with their order being channelled though their local retailer afterwards). Customised designs in either 80/20 wool/nylon or 100% wool can be delivered in less than six weeks – ideal for local contract projects or consumers who really want something special they can shout about. “This is a service that we believe will go from strength to strength in the next few years as customers look for that bit of individuality in their home,” says Vince Holden of Hugh Mackay. “It doesn’t get any more individual than this and yet the service is quick and affordable. We used the iconic image of Lennon to demonstrate just how intricate the designs could be’.
Two routes to carpet customisation A new website allows you to re-colour a large portfolio of existing designs in five standard qualities across up to 16 colours in the 80/20s or from an eight-colour palette of naturals in 100% wool. Alternatively, the sky’s the limit (as John Lennon might not have said) as customers can upload a scan or photograph to have matched, coordinated with existing fabrics for example, which the Hugh Mackay design studio will work with to create a design which will then be sampled back to the customer. Vince mentioned a paisley shirt design that had been re-created and an optician’s store that now has a bespectacled floor carpet. For details of ‘Design It’, contact your local agent who will be pleased to demonstrate the process.

Manx Silky Seller Manx has the makings of a best seller with their launch of Silky which takes soft in a slightly different direction, using nylon in a tenth-gauge velour cloth. “Everyone has super soft saxonies of one type or another but we wanted to explore another option,” says Graham Harris of Manx. “This new range has had a great reaction as people respond to the subtle, lustrous finish and the fine velour touch.” Silky is competitively priced and available in 10 colours including all the latest greys, of course, but look out for Pistachio, a soft green that seems to be growing strongly in popularity this season. 01827 831434 • www.manxcarpets.co.uk
Masterpiece Taking the Tablets If you’ve never tried tapping a room plan into your iPad or tablet, Masterpiece can make your day! The blissfully simple mobile solution that they have launched this year works the way estimators really work – only quicker! The new cloud-based mobile version of the Masterpiece measuring, planning and estimating software replaces paper intuitively but then goes on to do all the smart stuff that makes you look professional in the customer’s home – calculating the cuts and the waste, adding in the underlay and gripper and saving it all to the cloud for immediate processing by the store or head office, or for instant quoting face-to-face. “We’ve had a great reaction since we launched the mobile version in May,” said Charles Pearson of Masterpiece. “This is technology at its best – working the way you really want it to without the fiddly, tekkie issues that drive people nuts. And our system is very modular, so we work alongside you to get it set up with just the functions you need and then we’re always on hand to support you as you develop.” 01737 355831 • www.masterpiece-system.com
Ulster Leading by Design Ulster takes design seriously and has one of the most professional studios in the business where Clare Jenkinson and Calvin Pope preside. “We are one of the few pure design teams in the industry,” says Clare. “ and our role is to lead and inspire as well as reflect emerging trends.” So each industry event is an art exhibition for Ulster which is eagerly awaited by followers of flooring fashion. At Harrogate, Clare had drawn on her background as a painter to inform the new Watercolours residential design – a relaxing fluid approach reflecting subtle Persian designs with a subtlely distressed effect. This 80/20 15-feet wide carpet is available in five colourways across two designs. Clare’s colleague Calvin Pope has a background in the fashion industry before coming to Ulster and he has been working on Fusion, a striking pattern range which he describes as having an “ethnic, tribalist” appearance. Three designs cover dogtooth and geometric patterns called Sonic, Reverb and Tone that have a distinctive look of sound waves about them. The three designs are available in five colours with an emphasis on greys and blues and the carpet is available in 4m. 028 3833 4433 • www.ulstercarpets.com

British Wool Floor, the Fifth Wall “There’s a real buzz about the wool business right now – a feel good factor that retailers, manufacturers and consumers are enjoying together,” says Bridgette Kelly of the Campaign for Wool. Bridgette was a driving force in the rejuvenation of the Harrogate exhibition a few years ago when the ‘wool trends hub’ at the show became the creative focus and inspiration that brought the top names in textile flooring back into the event. This year’s presentation was equally impressive and a lot of fun with a set of tableaux under the theme “Paint your walls with wool.” The decorating scenes showed wool spilling out of paint pots and on rollers, allowing carpet to be ‘decorated’ from the floor right up the walls.
“Decorating is fashionable again and we want wool to be part of the decorative process” “Decorating is fashionable again and we want wool to be part of the decorative process,” said Bridgette. (pictured left) “Of course, vertical wall surfaces are a great place to show off wool but we also want to make the point that the floor is like a fifth wall – a surface to be taken seriously.” British Wool is capitalising on the strong interest in natural fibre with its key focus on WoolRetailer.com – an online platform that will be at the core of wool campaigning for the next five years. It is a multi-faceted tool for the trade. The push at the moment is to sign up retailers who can gain accreditation as a ‘wool specialist’ after completing a series of online training programmes. With accreditation comes a range of benefits including extra promotion across the market but the point of the course is to give retailers confidence to trade up consumers to a higher value quality wool sale. Another important aspect of WoolRetailer.com is to develop the site as the go-to destination for wool inspiration – showing retailers, architects, interior designers and specifiers some of the best installations, latest products and yarns technology. Bridgette Kelly said: “The aim of the label scheme is to encourage greater use of British wool in carpets to improve appearance and longevity. It has been very well received by the trade.”
“We want WoolRetailer.com to become the place where everyone involved in the wool business can meet to share ideas and tips,” said Bridgette, comparing it to the highly successful interiors site, Houzz. “I think there is a very collegiate feel in the sector now. Everyone can see the potential of coming together to promote the real benefits of wool,” she said. 01274 688666 • www.britishwool.org.uk

Kersaint Cobb Nautical but Nice! Kersaint Cobb are on the crest of a wave with the launch of Sea Silk, a superb sheeny carpet and many people’s favourite ‘posh’ carpet at the show. Three designs take nautical themes with Ebb, a cross-width rib, and Flow, a not-quite-straight rib and last, but not least, Tide, an exceptional carpet that the company wisely chose for their stand floor (pictured here with national sales manager Paul Cocks). Available in 6 colours, the clever part is that this carpet looks quite delicate but it is anything but with a commercial rating, robust performance and excellent cleanability. The company also premiered a new parquet floor in their hospitality collection. In 13mm and 20mm boards, the range allows for lots of design configurations. Most noticeable in this launch is the colour range of ten bright options which bring parquet right up to date as a statement floor. 01675 430 430 • www.kersaintcobb.co.uk
Thomas Witter Twist and Thrift “If you come to Thomas Witter you can always afford wool,” says Robbie Thomson (pictured right). And plenty of people do as evidenced by the success of the company’s Luxury Twist, their flagship 80/20 launched a year ago which, he says, is now the best selling twist in the UK. Playing to this strength, Luxury Twist has now been extended from its 10 launch colours to 17 now – including the latest greys and two stripes. Available in three weights from 40oz to 60oz, the range now strongly promotes its pedigree as “Yorkshire Born & Bred” and in the spirit of that county’s reputation for thrift, the lighter weight reckons to retail from £18. Even if you want a little texture in 100% British wool, Witters can still keep you under the £20 mark with its new Natural Habitat range with two designs in rib and basket weave – ideal especially for new home installations. 01429 892555 • www.thomaswitter.com

Adam Celebrating Perfection Adam is one of the most attractive carpet companies in the business today, with an impeccable pedigree of quality stretching back decades matched to a fresh, modern approach to the needs of contemporary consumers. All of this was much in evidence as Adam Carpets celebrated 25 years of their iconic Fine Worcester Twist while launching the range’s latest colours alongside some developments of the best selling Castlemead collection. The stand carpet at Harrogate was a perfect tribute to the enduring appeal of Fine Worcester Twist, carefully tufted with the range name and graphics from the current range of 65 colours. In 1991, FW was launched with just 20 colours and to get to its current range of options, 126 colours have passed through the sample books – 11 of those original colours remain today. The fine finish of FW sets it apart – made in a unique twin needle-bar process to increase its density. “This is as close to carpet perfection as you are likely to get,” said Eamonn Prescott of Adam (pictured left). “A carpet that oozes confidence and has the ultimate colour choice.” Colour is something the company takes very seriously. In a key announcement at the show, six new colours were added to 60-colour Castlemead Twist. The research prior to this change took place over a full year with close attention paid to trends in the fashion and fabrics sector. 50 candidate colours were tufted to a peg board as part of the consideration before the final six were selected – a clean beige, an apple green, a mellow yellow and, of course, three new greys. Added to all of the above, Adam has upgraded its stands so the company is flying high in this milestone year. 01562 829966 • www.adamcarpets.co.uk

Rol-lite Leading the Blinds Window blinds manufacturer Rol-lite are a welcome new addition to the marketplace, deciding to join in after a suprising survey 18 months ago revealed that more flooring retailers sold blinds than soft furnishing retailers did. “For retailers who don’t yet sell blinds it can be a welcome new revenue stream as well as an interesting addition to the portfolio of products in store,” said marketing manager Paul Swanson. And for those of us who know more about floors than windows – and would find it difficult to choose from Rol-Lite’s 4,000 options - the company is launching an Essentials Plus collection next month to focus on the guaranteed best-sellers. Trade only Rol-lite blinds are made in the UK and offer retailers a full merchandising service to set up stylish displays in their stores, like those pictured here with regional sales manager Vanessa O’Brien and SE area manager Debbi Gibson. Distinctive Flooring Art Installation The Harrogate exhibition has a ‘best stand’ award of course, but perhaps a more relevant accolade would be a ‘best floor’ award at the show. There isn’t one - so The Stocklists is awarding first prize in this category to Distinctive for a stunning demonstration of quality LVT and exemplary installation. It took two months of sleepless nights to design and a full two days to fit. The floor was a real show stopper for visiting fitters who recognized the imagination and craftsmanship brought together by the design of Distinctive’s National Sales Manager Jay Taylor (pictured left) and the skills of fitter Matt Bowles. Distinctive is a leading sponsor of the FloorSkills training centre based in Solihull, run by Sid Bourne and his son, who are well known as two of the country’s leading experts and trainers. The clever curved plank inserts forming the centre circle caused a lot of comment! The intricate installation featured many Distinctive products but the centerpiece was Heritage, a very attractive vintage look plank incorporating three different strips which are available in six colours. Crown Floors Innovative Evolution Boasting an impressive 27 collections on display, with established favourites positioned next to innovative and striking new styles, retailers were able to see first-hand how the Crown Floors stable is evolving – and what they can expect from the Balta brand as the new year approaches. Joined by an equally impressive family of display options upon a much larger exhibition stand than in previous years, the strength of the collection demonstrated just how far the brand had come since its introduction some five years ago. With a colourful backdrop of wall units beautifully displaying the diversity of the collection, the remainder of the stand was dedicated to showcasing new and existing collections on the numerous point of sale options available, including new style single-range waterfall lecterns and the Familyproof Comfort 74-strong tombola. Among the new and existing Easy Clean collections, The Flooring Show was also home to three new super-soft Satino Collections, added to bring additional diversity and choice. Victoria Hit Parade Victoria don’t use a ‘carrot and stick’ approach to motivate sales – all the buzz is about the ‘carrot and radish’! Confused? Victoria MD Phil Harley is happy to explain as the concept lies at the heart of his major new launch at Harrogate. Lasting Luxury is the retail market’s first super soft solution dyed nylon carpet – which if that sounds a little technical, let’s go back to the vegetables! Solution dyed nylon has the colour all the way through the fibre before the carpet is made – the ‘carrot’. Lesser products are piece-dyed – the carpet is made and then dyed so the colour is only skin deep – the ‘radish’. All of which adds up to performance – a soft product that is reliably robust in terms of appearance retention, is bleach cleanable, and with the nylon construction giving it a bounce back that doesn’t flatten. A 15 year warranty and lifetime shading warranty backs up the claim. And all made in Britain. “We wanted to use innovation to engineer a carpet that the market wants but with the performance the industry needs,” says Phil. “We’re really pleased with the product and it has been a real hit with retailers.” Lasting Luxury comes in two ranges, and in 12 colours – the core product Forever, is a 65oz carpet in 4.75m and then Eternal, a sumptuous 95oz deep saxony in 4m. The collection will be fully launched in the new year. Victoria has been busy in the wool business with a major re-launch of the new Tudor Twist after a 10-year lull! The range is based on a smart selection of 21 best-sellers from the flagship Victoria Twist collection and its sister colour range Splash. “We got inside this collection to extract the very best options that the retailer can sell effectively,” says Phil. “A premium wool blend yarn, lots of stock and attractive, more compact point of sale units make this a really nice offer.” And vigorous Victoria are up to all sorts of interesting things elsewhere! A new Sisal Weave and a sister product Style are launched to respond to the appetite for texture with subtle rib and tight Brussels loop designs. Rustic Jewels is launched this Autumn, one of the best 50/50s in the market, and is available in Victoria’s existing Harmony design plus a new Herringbone which the company had used to carpet part of its Harrogate stand to great effect – the small pattern, textured herringbone is very stylish and looks like a winner for those customers looking for something distinctively different but acceptable to live with. Finally, the show previewed the posh new patterned Wilton Collection that will roll out at the beginning of 2017 in 100% New Zealand wool with three exclusive designs plus one plain in four colours. A happy new year is in store!

F Ball Can Stand the Heat! F Ball’s hot stuff at the show was Styccobond F49 Hybrid Pressure Sensitive Adhesive, a new performance product specially engineered for the hostile environment of the domestic conservatory where temperatures can range from minus 20º to plus 60º C. “This is a great product that’s good for consumers who need it to last and good for installers who need a specialist adhesive they can work with easily,” says Richard Harris of F Ball. “This spreads like a normal adhesive but stays tacky for a long time so that the floor stays in place during installation without slipping.” Styccobond F49 is a twin-pack product but is easy to mix and then it has a pot life of three hours and stays ‘open’ to work with for four hours. “This has been very demanding to develop,” says Richard, “but the result is a real problem solver.” F Ball put Styccobond F49 through its paces in the demo area to great acclaim. 01538 361633 • www.f-ball.co.uk
WoolSafe Standing the Test of Time WoolSafe has much to celebrate after 25 years of success in safeguarding the care and cleaning of wool carpets. They have played a major part in the enduring customer satisfaction with natural fibre floor coverings. Paul Bakker and Barbara Walker were involved at the programme’s inception while working at the International Wool Secretariat (IWS) in Ilkley. “The industry was having all sorts of issues with the cleaning products available in the market, many of which had a negative effect on the carpet’s performance,” said Paul. “The professionals resolved the issue by working out a testing regime that dealt with the complexity of the different fibres, stains and cleaning chemicals,” continued Paul. “The result: the first ever independent testing and accreditation programme for carpet cleaning products; which became known as the WoolSafe programme.” After 25 years, WoolSafe has tested thousands of products from over 100 companies worldwide and works closely with many of the major global manufacturers to ensure optimum product performance. All approved products are re-tested every year – “it’s a very important part of the credibility and integrity of the WoolSafe Mark” says Paul – and even today 20% of all newly submitted products fail to meet WoolSafe’s exacting standards. Aged 76, Paul has retired three times but keeps being drawn back in by the interesting and varied work that goes on at WoolSafe. “I still enjoy it and I like the technical aspects and challenges of the work. I am very proud of what WoolSafe has achieved over all these years.” WoolSafe Managing Director, Dr Agnes Zsednai, a research chemist, joined the company 15 years ago to work on the chemical testing and has done much to promote the brand and its values to chemical suppliers. Paul’s son Steve came into the organisation seven years ago on the marketing side after a career in carpet and upholstery cleaning and has contributed greatly to the successful expansion of WoolSafe’s services and its relationships with the carpet industry. So it very much looks like the organisation has a bright future ahead of it! 01943 850 817 • www.woolsafe.org

Furlong Leading the Crowd “I have been coming to Harrogate for decades and I have never experienced a better show in my career!” says Neil Valentine of Furlong. The comment comes as The Flooring Show enjoys a welcome renaissance that has seen it’s success assured – but for Furlong it also helps to have one of the most talked about product launches at the event, the debut of the beautifully soft Solitaire.
“Solitaire has strong visual appeal as well as a superb touch and the colour bank has had a high impact. The enthusiasm has been immense and initial orders have already surpassed all expectations. All I can say is wow!”
“This carpet raises the bar in the soft sector,” said Neil. Solitaire is sold under the Regency Carpets’ Prestige brand and is a bleach-cleanable 2-ply polypropylene made in the UK. “The stand has been crowded out all show and visitors have reacted really strongly. The carpet has strong visual appeal as well as a superb touch and the colour bank has had a high impact,” said Neil. “The enthusiasm has been immense and initial orders have already surpassed all expectations. All I can say is – wow!” The Furlong exhibition stand was one of the smartest at the show with sweeping curves and distinctive carpet rolls rising from lecterns to literally raise the roof of the whole structure. Furlong also launched Harmony, a mid range Saxony, under the Carefree brand which is set to be a mainstream seller for retailers. “Our philosophy is simply to tick all the boxes and it is very apparent here with great value in 4 and 5 metres, a choice of felt or action back and all the quality, warranty, service and sales support that retailers have come to expect from us,” said Neil. Kingsmead Colourful Confidence Confident courage at Kingsmead is reflected in adventurous new ranges in their CleanEasy collections which have burst out in a splash of colour and patterns. “It’s a brave decision to go for it on a large scale but I like colour and I like pattern,” says Martin West of Kingsmead. “And I like them even more because now they are selling well in the market!” The three new patterned ranges in 2-ply polypropylene loop are right on trend – Pastiche is a small plaid, Herringbone which reflects a key flooring fashion of the moment and Waterfall is a little more arty with a subtle design. All are available in nine colours. But for yet more colour, prepare to be amazed! Kingsmead have followed through their colour enthusiasm into Amazing – a range with 14 colours including some strong blues and reds. “When I looked across our range portfolio there was only one thing missing – and that’s colour,” said Martin. Well it isn’t missing now and sales reports are strong for the new approach. In the wool department, Kingsmead are well known for their loop collections and the newcomer Berber Attraction is a sound entry level model in 50/50 wool in six colours and three designs. “This is very affordable wool and whereas some are reluctant to run with a 50/50 twist, the loop is maybe more acceptable and gives an extra option in the store,” says Martin. 01827 831424 • www.kingsmeadcarpets.co.uk

Abingdon Love and Money Abingdon’s love affair with super-soft is not entirely emotional. “Retailers are realising that this trend might be all the fashion but it is also a significant opportunity to increase the sales values,” says Martin Peace. “This kind of carpet needs to be better engineered to offer the soft luxury feel without sacrificing performance,” he explains. “If you cut corners, you get problems later on. If you sell a superior soft product you maximize customer satisfaction and make a better margin.” That superiority has just arrived in the shape of Deep Feelings which Martin describes as the “first effective launch of a polyester super-soft.” The range is part of Abingdon’s Love Story Collection which started with polypropylene Lasting Romance launched last May and now new Deep Feelings shares the same colourbank of 12 options but gives the opportunity of a trade-up to the higher end of the synthetic soft market, retailing around the £20 level. “This takes us to the next level of yarn engineering,” says Martin (pictured left) who says the company has spent nearly a year getting the multi-filament yarn right to offer high performance that competes with nylon. The carpet has even delivered great results on stairs which a polypropylene product would struggle to cope with. The product is already becoming Abingdon’s best seller and is available in 2.5, 4 and 5m. Of course, Abingdon has been busy elsewhere across their portfolio with new launches in polypropylene of Soft Textures, an entry level roll line in six colours with a highly acceptable small pattern design with the company’s AquaProtec stain resist treatment, and also Silkstone Twist, another budget roll line in a robust tight twist with a heathered effect and slightly silk soft finish in seven colours.
“This kind of carpet needs to be better engineered to offer the soft luxury feel without sacrificing performance. If you sell a superior soft product you maximize customer satisfaction and make a better margin.”
And Abingdon has also brought a long-established best seller bang up to date with the “grand re-launch” of Stainfree Royale – a heathered 70oz heavyweight made from two-colour yarn that has been in the market for eight years. The colour overhaul sees only five of the original options remaining – gone are the creamy beiges and in are the shades of grey and subtle pastel tones. Abingdon’s distinction in the wool department is based on it’s multi-width formula that has been so successful in the synthetic fibres. No other manufacturer offer so many wool ranges in multi-width now that Abingdon has extended this flexibility across its four mainstream wool ranges – 60oz Charter Supreme Gold, Anniversary Twist in 32 and 42 oz, the Welsh Collection in 30, 40 and 50 oz and finally the Royal Windsor range which includes some textured designs. That’s a lot of options in wool! 01274 655662 • www.abingdonflooring.co.uk

Cavalier Magnificent Seven Cavalier’s stand at Harrogate was bursting at the seams with a magnificent seven new ranges from a company that never stands still on product development. The centrepiece was the launch of Cosmopolitan, a smart 80/20 1/8th gauge twist which has all the options. A sister product to Criterion, colourful new Cosmo comes in three weights and 24 sophisticated plain tones. Also new in wool is the contemporary-styled Capital Loop which offers a tight loop texture and a basket weave in seven colours including some on-trends greys of course – and the grey fashion has also inspired colour additions to Cavalier’s hugely popular Pennine Heathers range. And for fans of the company’s fine 80/20 velvet Cartouche, the colour bank has just been extended to 24 options in all to keep this smart carpet at the height of fashion. Developments at Cavalier also extend to the synthetic ranges with the launch of new Protégé, a neat 2-ply plain twist with a heavyweight option entitle Virtuoso. But maybe the biggest buzz on the stand was around Stainless Silken – a cleverly engineered woven polyester multi-ply yarn with a silky soft touch. “This feels like a lot of carpet which performs better than a polypropylene but is still bleach cleanable,” says Hans Lowe of Cavalier. “It feels really warm to walk on – but with a tog rating of 5.5, it’s not ideal for underfloor heating!!” 01254 268 000 • www.cavaliercarpets.co.uk
Cormar Soft Succession Well Cormar started it all… and now there’s no stopping them! Since Sensation set the agenda for soft with its launch in 2012 on an unsuspecting carpet industry there have been many imitators – some more impressive than others. Cormar have extended their Sensation success with sister products such as Sensations Heathers and Supreme but now they’ve engineered another best-seller in the sector – Soft Focus. “Sensation has been incredible for Cormar,” said marketing director David Cormack. “so it wasn’t easy when we sat down and thought how else can we make a real difference in the market for soft.” They answered the question with sophisticated fibre enqineering, moving from eighth-gauge to tenth-gauge and creating a finer, multi-filament fibre they call Finesse. “Probably the softest polypropylene carpet on the market,” says David. And at a price point at £20 - £23m2 consumers are getting a lot of carpet for their money. Cormar were also proud to demonstrate their new portal – the online trading platform that retailers are finding increasingly attractive as a way to do business. When the new portal was launched in May, the 20% of orders that went through online jumped up to 30% and is growing fast. Cormar has a superb reputation for service and through the portal, retailers can see that in real-time – checking stock, ordering online and tracking delivery so that they can make promises they can keep to their customers. The new consumer sample service is popular and Cormar hopes to add a returns service for retailers soon. Craig Marshall heads up portal development and is delighted with its popularity. “It works the way our retailers work, 24/7, to make their business better. We always say its not ‘our system’, it’s their system and we’ll keep listening to what they want to improve the way we do things.” 01204 881234 • www.cormarcarpets.co.uk

Interfloor Polished Performance Interfloor have powered forward their performance, polished up their presentation and pushed ahead in adding to their portfolio in a show of confidence that underlines their marketleading position. “Providing better looking and better performing products that genuinely help our customers to profitably grow their business is what we’re all about,” says CEO John Cooper. A key example is underlay where Interfloor is building on the brand strength of its best selling Tredaire and Duralay ranges. Tredaire is positioned as the luxury underlay for the domestic market and the point-of-sale has been skillfully modernised and includes neat floor plan graphics with a supporting leaflet that shows what goes where in terms of underlay throughout the home. The company is also piloting a stylish new foot tester so that consumers can sample the benefits of Tredaire in store. “We wanted a more consumer friendly feel to Tredaire so that people understand the product and its appeal,” said Laura Ashall, head of marketing, pictured with the foot tester. “The presentation has a softer look but helps the retailer to get a better sale.” Duralay is now firmly positioned as the contractor’s choice for commercial use and for more technical installations in the home such as with underfloor heating or for wood and laminate floors using the latest Duralay Timbermate range which has some of the best acoustic performance in the industry. And again, to help the retailer make the sale, a smart ‘tap tester’ gizmo is available for use in store which actively shows consumers why underlay is worth the investment.
“Providing better looking and better performing products that genuinely help our customers to profitably grow their business is what we’re all about.” Improvements in performance and presentation also extend to the company’s famous Gripperrods range which has new packaging and POS and proudly waves the British flag now that all the products are made in Interfloor’s Dumfries factory. “By bringing manufacturing of our entire range back to the UK we can guarantee quality and service and at an affordable price,” says John. Made from superior birch wood, the range comprises the entry-level Gripperrods Standard; Gripperrods Tackfast, which is the best-seller; and then Gripperrods Professional. These last two have a number of new features to give greater stability including a broader strip and more pins. There’s also a Gripperrods Contract product with an even wider strip. The company points out that if all the gripper it made each year was laid end to end, it would go threequarters the way around the world. No doubt this ambitious company is aiming for the full circumference some time soon! 01706 213131 • www.interfloor.com

Granorte Eye-catching Cork This year’s Flooring Show, Harrogate, proved the fitting place for Granorte to unveil its exciting new plans for the UK to visiting retailers, with significant positive reactions received during the three-day event. Trade media coverage had already primed visitors of the new stock and service plans from the Portuguese manufacturer, but the show allowed Granorte to personally explain these to interested parties, as well as to reveal their new eye-catching point-of-sale that helps to simplify Granorte’s high performance in-stock offering. Paulo Rocha, Granorte, comments: “The Flooring Show was the first time we’ve presented our brand new stock collection to retailers from across the country. We’re really confident that the new-found service levels will encourage an even wider selection of retailers to try the wonders of cork, a sustainable surface that is increasingly highly regarded by the interior design community. “The trickle-down effect is already starting to see homeowners look to cork as a serious flooring proposition and with our powerful display, seen for the first time at The Flooring Show, retailers will be armed to answer the growing demand. CRUK The ‘Secret of Carpet Recycling’ More retailers are prepared to take on the challenge of recycling waste carpet that can potentially help them to make substantial cost savings while improving their service to customers, according to Carpet Recycling UK, the industry’s association for recycling and reusing carpet. Speaking after the three-day 2016 Harrogate Flooring Show, CRUK Director Laurance Bird said there was a ‘noticeable increase’ in enquiries from companies looking to reduce their costs and gain green credentials through a sustainable disposal route for both uplifted carpet and postinstallation offcuts. “Larger retailers or contractors paying more than £500 per month for carpet waste disposal can reap the benefits,” explained Laurance. “Up to 30% savings are feasible if carpets are segregated and baled, which adds up to considerable savings over a year. Our many success stories demonstrate this.” CRUK’s stand and two seminars providing practical advice and tips on how to recycle carpets attracted more than 100 delegates. Unveiling ‘The Secret of Carpet Recycling’, CRUK member Peter Steel of Linney Cooper, (pictured below) outlined the thought processes and steps retailers should consider to make recycling work for them. “We need to change the way we look at our waste, where it goes to and what we can do about it. Organisations such as Carpet Recycling UK can help you dispose of carpet waste more responsibly – and save money.” 0161 440 8325 • www..carpetrecyclinguk.com

Kenburn The Rush to Crush The Kenburn Carpet Crusher exhibited again at this year¹s flooring show and met with an even more enthusiastic response to the financial and environmental benefits of recycling both new wool and manmade off cuts as well as old uplifted post-consumer carpet and underlay waste. The Flooring Show 2016 generated considerably more orders and enquiries than previous years with the first visitor to the “Carpet Crusher” stand on Sunday morning Andrew Kerry from Kerrys Carpets and Flooring North Walsham being so impressed with the concept of recycling, placed his order for a Carpet Crusher before 10.00am!
The tried and tested recycling initiative enables the new off cuts to be turned into a product such as underlay or equestrian flooring and the old uplifted carpet and underlay waste converts into a “waste to energy” fuel as a replacement for coal to power concrete kilns. The simple to use machine compacts the waste to a 4:1 compaction ratio in order to reduce transportation costs by 75%. Over the past nine years Landfill Tax has risen by a staggering 270% which is why it now costs less per tonne to recycle carpet and underlay waste than it does to send it to landfill.

Contempo Carpets Performance and Panache When is flooring a fashion industry? When it lets art inform design and sets out to inspire consumers to invest in a carpet they really want, rather than just selling them a commodity carpet they simply need. Millennium Weavers Romance and Admiration Millennium Weavers made their debut at Harrogate to continue their growth as a new force in fashionable residential carpets since they set up in Belgium in 2012 – presenting products that are absolutely on-trend and use the latest yarn technology. In their first foray into the successful soft market – and their first polyester - the company launched a heavyweight contender in Romance, a UV-stable solution-dyed range in 12 colours and its sister range Admiration in nine colours. A top quality 1,500g 2-ply polypropylene twist called Infinity was also seen for the first time and attracted attention for some of the stronger colours in its 12 options. Outside the home, Millennium Weavers are also making a name for themselves in grass – an increasingly popular sector in the UK – and three new options were on show. +32 55 50 90 50 • www.millenniumweavers.eu

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
Associated Carpet Group www.smartercarpets.co.uk Contact: Richard Moore Tel: 01942 825520 rjmoore65@googlemail.com rmoore@smartercarpets.com
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS November 2016
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents
• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet from Interfloor The resurgence of rubber underlay Research into consumer purchase behaviour commissioned by Interfloor in October 2015 shows more people than ever before are buying new underlay when they purchase new carpet.
Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world.
The research suggests this is in part due to improved understanding of the various products and their benefits gained through Internet research and advice from retailers’ own sales consultants. The in-store consumer experience is key to the rising conversion rates, as it gives retailers an opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of the different products on offer. Consumers want hands-on experience of quality products which offer high levels of comfort and are fit for purpose. They are less concerned about price and more interested in long-term performance and this has led to the resurgence of traditional rubber underlays such as Tredaire Colours Red, Interfloor’s premium sponge rubber underlay. Sponge rubber underlays have been around since the 1950s for very good reasons. In fact, Tredaire launched Willow Green, the UK’s first sponge rubber underlay in 1956. Sponge rubber underlays are extremely comfortable; no other underlay product produces quite the same feel underfoot. They are also exceptionally good at minimising both impact sound and airborne sound between rooms. They are incredibly flexible and cover more applications than any other underlay type, including specialist low tog underlays for underfloor heating and thin and dense underlays for hard flooring. In a Stocklist readers’ survey published in November 2015, 30% said they were selling more underlay and although 60% find it easy to sell underlay, only 50% were using POS to demonstrate its benefits – one of the key reasons customers visit retailers is to feel samples (83%) or walk on the carpet to see how it feels (26%). Interfloor offers POS items including custom-made swatch books, presentation folders and hanging samples with instore foot testers coming soon. All are designed to help retailers sell exactly the right underlay to every customer that comes to their store.
Over 80% of those who didn’t buy new underlay at the time of their carpet purchase believe that they can use their existing underlay (57%), that underlay isn’t necessary (19%) or an expensive add-on (12%) and yet underlay is a great opportunity to improve the way the consumer feels about the total purchase – and hence the retailer.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.
www.interfloor.com
Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. www.interfloor.com
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Crumb
Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
PU foam
Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.
www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk
Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.
www.underlay.com
Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).
Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.
Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 74
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening
Shedding
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading
Indentations
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
SAFE
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
DURABLE EASYCARE
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Comfort
COMFORT
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Safety
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.
100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich
britishwool.org.uk campaignforwool.org THE STOCKLISTS November 2016
Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 81
