Carpet&FlooringReview Bright and beautiful

Eye-catching Bloc solid colour vinyl flooring from commercial flooring specialists Polyflor was recently installed in the refurbished office of Ashworth Parkes Architects in Cambridge.

Bloc PUR in the bright yellow Lemon Punch design was selected to add a pop of bold colour to the modern, minimalist office space at Ashworth Parkes Architects HQ. The subtler Studio Grey shade from the Bloc collection was used for an upstairs meeting area. Ashworth Parkes Architects Ltd is a multiple award winning, RIBA registered architectural practice with a six person team specialising in bespoke architectural designs for the residential and commercial sectors. The practice moved into their Dale’s Brewery office in 2014. Jeremy Ashworth, Director of Ashworth Parkes Architects Ltd commented, “We wanted to make a bold statement with the interior design of our small office space. Bloc flooring in this vibrant shade has helped us take our office from ordinary to extraordinary in a simple yet effective way.” Bloc PUR is a vibrant collection of solid colour sheet flooring in a broad spectrum of 16 enticing shades, with a fully pigmented, homogeneous 0.7mm wear layer of pure colour. Designed to provide either a subtle backdrop or a bold, modern statement in commercial interiors, UK manufactured Bloc PUR is a high performance heterogeneous sheet floorcovering with a textured matt finish. Chic shades

Crown Floors has given its popular Roseland range an on-trend colour update to take it into 2018 and beyond, ensuring it remains a natural first choice for customers looking for the ultimate in beautifully soft, luxe-look carpet that’s also blissfully easy to care for.

“Grey is still the shade in interior decorating and we wanted to reflect this by introducing more of this key colour into our Roseland collection,” explains Gavin Freebairn, field sales manager for the brand. “Our Roseland carpet already offers faultless quality and impressive value for money, and now we are able to give customers a wider choice of colourways for total flexibility.” A fresh, modern take on the traditional ‘salt-and-pepper’ carpet, the Roseland collection has been a firm customer favourite since its launch in 2013. With an attractive multi-tonal heather effect that adds a feeling of warmth and comfort to any room, it comes in an earthy yet sophisticated palette that includes soft Mushroom and delicate Nougat, and three brandnew additions: Phantom, a glamorous pale grey with a hint of silver; Antique Grey, a classic soft stone shade, and Asphalt, a darker, concrete hue with deep, rich tones. Velvety to the touch with a deeply plush 15mm pile, Roseland offers an unbeatable combination of stylish looks and practicality. It’s made with Easy Clean polypropylene fibres that are incredibly stain resistant and is bleachcleanable with no loss of colour, hence its impressive 15-year wear and stain warranties. “Our Roseland collection is consistently one of our best sellers as it ticks all the boxes,” says Gavin Freebairn. “By updating it with these beautiful new shades we’re certain it can maintain its market position for years to come.” T 0800 898282 www.crownfloors.co.uk THE STOCKLISTS November 2017

NEWS

A Spire to performance

High performance products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd., including Stopgap F78 waterproof surface membrane, Stopgap 300 smoothing underlayment and Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive were used to install 6,500m2 of vinyl flooring at the Spire hospital in Tollerton, Nottingham.

AJ Floorcraft of Derby, were subcontracted to install flooring throughout the hospital, which had been newly built. Prior to the installation of a smoothing underlayment, the subfloor was mechanically cleaned to remove impurities and two coats of Stopgap F78 one component, rapid drying waterproof surface membrane were applied. Stopgap F78 impedes the passage of residual construction moisture from affecting subsequent floorcovering installations, allowing early installation of floorcoverings in fast track building programmes. Contractors from AJ Floorcraft then applied Stopgap 300 HD heavy-duty smoothing underlayment to the hospital floor. Stopgap 300 HD is a fast drying selflevelling smoothing underlayment suitable for use in light to heavy-duty areas, for preparing sound absorbent and non-absorbent subfloors prior to the installation of new floorcoverings. Stopgap 300 HD was particularly suitable for this flooring installation as it is designed for use in areas subject to heavy loads. Finally, Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive was used to secure the vinyl floorcoverings. Styccobond F44 is a solvent free acrylic emulsion adhesive, which is designed to give a high bond strength, strong initial tack and a long open time. It is protected against bio-degradation and is suitable for use over normal underfloor heating installations. T 01538 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

Itec impress

With two and four-metre width options across its commercial vinyl portfolio, Itec Contract Floors manufactures floors that have installation, aesthetic and performance advantages. Making all of its commercial sheet vinyl in Europe, Itec Contract Floors can strictly control the quality of all of its exclusive decorative, safety and acoustic flooring. Developing all designs in-house, Itec floors provide a variety of wood, stone, architectural and decorative effects that are available in two and four-metre widths. For large areas, the four-metre width option enhance aesthetics, requiring fewer seams across the space. Also, with the innovative technology of Invisiweld, any seams are stronger and almost invisible, contributing to a more realistic effect for wood plank and tile decors, as well as keeping mineral and architectural-looking designs seamless. In smaller areas, two-metre wide options keep waste to a minimum. These width options can also help when it comes to installing Itec Contract Floors, particularly in larger areas where fewer seams mean faster fitting and an end result that looks better, both heightened with the use of Invisiweld. Once installed, Itec Contract Floors deliver exceptional long-term performance, equipped with Hyperguard+ PUR technology for a surface that resists scuffs and stains and is easier to maintain. Protecting looks and enhancing life, Hyperguard+ comes as standard on all decorative, acoustic and safety flooring from the brand. With floors rated up to Class 43 Light Industrial Heavy use, there is no doubt that Itec Contract Floors are hardwearing enough for the most demanding of public spaces. In areas such as student accommodation and multi-occupancy housing, it is the acoustic flooring range that really delivers, providing a home-like feel, easy maintenance, high wear resistance and up to 19dB of acoustic absorption; the standard for education across Europe. NEWS Customer-centric clicking

Selected retailers across the Uk are the first to be able to take advantage of MyUnilin, the new online partner platform from Unilin, the company behind Quick-Step, Pergo, Elka and Balterio. Introduced as part of its customer-centric philosophy, the new tool increases efficiency between manufacturer, distributor and retailer.

Developed to streamline ordering of Unilin laminate, wood and LVT products and accessories, the new software has been trialled at several retailers, including both single and multi-site independents. MyUnilin allows retailers to access a range of functions instantly, such as browse and order Unilin products, check stock in real-time, review the status of existing orders and access account balances immediately. Sophie Hautekeete, International PR and Sponsoring Manager, Unilin, comments: “At Unilin our objective is to always put the customer first, whether that be distributor, retailer, installer or consumer. For example, our Academy for Excellence in Flooring was introduced to offer a competitive advantage to installers. MyUnilin is designed to help distributors and retailers through faster and more efficient realtime ordering and account management that’s incredibly easy to use.” Feedback from trials of the software has been extremely positive. One retailer involved in the trial, Doors & Floors Direct, is a multiplesite independent that has seven members of staff regularly using the software: “Our staff have been using MyUnilin from their laptops in store and have found it straightforward and easy to use,” says Sam Scott, director, Doors & Floors Direct. “Previously we would have waited until the end of the day to place orders, but now we’re doing it ‘on the fly’ as the software is so simple to use. “There’s no more sitting on the phone and it’s easy to double-check order accuracy. In fact, it is the only system that all the staff are happy to jump on, just because it’s so easy to find what you need; even matching trims and the correct underlay can be found without fuss.” www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Simplicity style

Flair Rugs stood out from the crowd at Top Drawer London with a sleek and contemporary all-white stand that reflected the on-trend designs in its brand new, design-led Luxmi collection. Alongside selected new additions to Flair Rugs’ Simplicity and Core collection on show, buyers were primarily treated to the first reveal of the Luxmi range – an exclusive curation of fine-quality designs capturing the supplier’s premium rug styles – with the highlight being the unveiling of a capsule collection inspired by the V&A, the world’s leading museum of art, design and performance. The collection launched with four styles – Jazz, Fanfare, Rhapsody and Honeysuckle – each inspired by the work of influential and acclaimed figures including William Morris, Owen Jones and F. Gregory Brown, charting key periods of design such as Art Deco and the Arts & Crafts movement. “Our V&A collection was definitely a huge draw for buyers,” says Flair Rugs’ sales and marketing director Gareth Davies. “They are eye-catching, truly beautiful rugs, and they epitomise rug craft at its very best – two of the designs are hand-tufted and finished by artisans, the other two are woven on jacquard looms. And the colours are exquisite. “We’re delighted that Top Drawer went so well for us. We’ve never exhibited there before but we specifically chose it as a platform to launch Luxmi because as an exhibition it attracts some of the brightest design talent and the most innovative, trend-led brands in the UK, and as a design-focused supplier we feel our offering sits perfectly alongside them. Hence the very “clean” look we gave to our stand – we wanted it to be as unfussy, sleek and as modern as possible, as that really sums up Flair Rugs’ forward-thinking approach to rug design. “We always say we don’t want to follow trends, we want to help shape them, and I think at Top Drawer this year we showed that with our huge range designs – from our budget-driven Simplicity collection to our premium hand-woven styles – Flair Rugs is definitely one of the best rug suppliers to the trade.” T 01457 850660 www.flairrugs.com

NEWS Growing industry

The country’s largest online flooring retailer, Uk Flooring Direct, has moved to a new facility as it looks to achieving a £100m turnover.

Situated in Hinckley, Leicestershire, the new facility provides a central location for the business with easy access to major arterial roads, ensuring fast delivery of its flooring to homes and businesses across the UK. With 58,000ft2 of space, the building houses a showroom, marketing suite, sales centre, customer collection point and five-bay warehouse. Improving efficiency and speed of order processing, the new warehouse is capable of holding enough stock to ensure UK Flooring Direct has the capacity to achieve its £100million turnover target. The initial £750,000 capital outlay in the acquisition and fit-out of the building comes following consistent investment in the company’s operating system, website and insight technologies; totalling £1.25m over the last three years. Jason Ashby, managing director, UK Flooring Direct, comments: “When we launched UK Flooring Direct, we set out with the ambition to become the UK’s largest online flooring retailer and now we have reached that goal, we are determined to keep growing and become one of the country’s largest online retailers full stop. Our previous location was stifling growth, with staff amenities proving inadequate and stock-holding capacity preventing us from maximising sales. “The new Hinckley site means that we can continue to invest in our people and provide them with incredible working conditions and facilities, as well as sustainably expand product lines and stock levels to meet demand. We’re excited to be in and look forward to the positive impact it will have on the entire UK Flooring Direct team, driving us to be one of the most innovative businesses in the flooring industry.” Currently employing 75 staff and recruiting in areas across the business, UK Flooring Direct has previously been listed as one of the fastest growing businesses in the UK and stocks over 200 different floors across wood, laminate and LVT product categories. Also holding a full range of installation, finishing and after care products; the supplier offers credit terms and exclusive discounts to members of the trade. www.ukflooringdirect.co.uk

Cormar expresses itself

Cormar Carpets has boosted the number of its Express Collect centres, throughout England and Scotland, following year-on-year growth in the company’s fast track retailer service. The two new centres are based in Scotland: Motherwell, very close to the M74 motorway, just south of Glasgow, and Bathgate, close to the M8 motorway in between Glasgow and Edinburgh. These will complement existing collection points across the country. The next day collection service, which operates Monday to Friday, was launched four years ago as an additional free service, allowing retailers and contractors to pick up carpet the next day from a choice of collection centres throughout the country. With 27 Express Collect centres now in place, it means the majority of retailers are within a 30 minute drive from the nearest collection point. “With over 3,000 carpet deliveries each week, we are always looking at ways we can improve our fast, reliable delivery service,” said Craig Marshall, sales order channels and logistics director. “With a 20% rise in orders in the past year, expanding the next day collection points allows even more retailers to access this service. “We have always prided ourselves on our nationwide delivery fleet as it is an important offering to our independent carpet retailers and local carpet shops, differentiating us from many of our competitors. Our Express Collect centres now mean they can choose to collect orders even more swiftly.” T 01204 881234 www.cormarcarpets.co.uk

See for yourself

Crown Floors by Balta invited the team at Carpet 1st to see the group’s carpet styles being made with their very own eyes. Visiting Balta’s Sint-Baafs-Vijve HQ and production site, as well as its Tielt and Waregem facilities, employees from Carpet 1st were treated to a rare glimpse of just how Balta ensures Crown Floors carpets provide the very best in style, quality and affordability. Taking a whistle stop tour of the 96,000m2 Waregem weaving site, before being whisked off to the imposing 306,000m2 Sint-Baafs-Vijve HQ to witness tufting and to take a break for lunch, Carpet 1st members were then shown the cut-length process at Balta’s Tielt facility. The action-packed day was rounded off with a spot of shopping, a boat trip and an evening meal in the picturesque city of Ghent before travelling home the next day. Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, says: “It’s always great to show our customers just what goes in to making carpet, from weaving or tufting right through to finishing and cutting to order. It goes someway in showing just why carpet from Crown Floors by Balta is highly thought of across the industry. And as a bonus, Ghent is a beautiful city that’s well worth spending time in!” T0800 898282 www.crownfloors.co.uk

Fading focal point

Launching 2018, Babylon is the latest design to join the Fading World rug collection from Louis de Poortere. A multi-layered composition of floral, Arabic geometric and distressed elements set in soft hues. Available in four colour options - Alhambra, Algarve, Sherbet and Sherazad - featuring glimpses of blue, pink, green and soft gold; Babylon brings a worn, vintage feel that is a dominating trend for interiors. Alan Russell, sales director, Louis de Poortere, explains: “The Fading World collection is one of our most popular, it’s worn-effects giving rugs a sense of past grandeur and time-ravaged elegance with thoroughly modern colourways in-tune with today’s interiors. Babylon will be joining the collection for 2018, adding depth and underlining that Fading World is still very much a focal point for Louis de Poortere.” Babylon joins the Fading World collection alongside Medallion, Agra Sur and Generation. Crafted from luxurious cotton chenille for great underfoot feel and appearance retention, all Fading World styles are made in Europe and Louis de Poortere controls every aspect of production to ensure exceptional quality. With a rug weaving tradition dating back 100 years, Louis de Poortere has the largest vertically integrated Wilton production plant in the industry. Summer success

Recofloor has named the three winners of its annual Summer Promotion, which was held throughout August to encourage more flooring companies to recycle their waste vinyl flooring through Altro and Polyflor’s scheme. The draw was streamed live on Facebook at the beginning of September.

Congratulations to MacGregor Flooring Company Ltd, Hamilton; Branagan Flooring Services, Manchester and S&D Flooring Ltd, Hull who each won a £100 Red Letter Days Gift Card to spend on an ‘unforgettable experience’ of their choosing. Every flooring company raising a Recofloor collection throughout August and returning a minimum of either two full bulk bags or a full blue bin qualified for the prize draw. Throughout the month, a total of more than 38 tonnes were sent for recycling – a 31% increase on July’s 26 tonnes.

Pictured left to right: John Scott, Hamish MacGregor and Sam Carmichael-Pitts

Hamish MacGregor, Managing Director of MacGregor Flooring Company Ltd, commented: “It’s nice to win something for a change! I’ve always felt that recycling is the way to go and as Recofloor members, we always try to recycle vinyl flooring where we can. We have recently extended our car park to make space for recycling other materials, such as cardboard.” Kate Branagan, Managing Director of Branagan Flooring Services said the prize had been given to their warehouse manager John Scott, who deals with the Recofloor collections, adding: “I feel that he deserves it.The larger volume of collections throughout the summer months is mainly due to the large amount of school and university work we do.” Steve Dixon, Managing Director of S&D Flooring Ltd said the prize is a ‘great bonus’ for the company at the end of a busy summer. He added: “Working with Recofloor and recycling our waste vinyl flooring over the last couple of years has been great for improving our sustainability performance. We look forward to giving this prize to a hard working employee at the organisation.” Launched eight years ago by leading flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro, more than 3,400 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring has now been recycled through Recofloor. This is equivalent to well over one million square metres of flooring and enough to cover 138 football pitches. T 0161 355 7618 www.recofloor.org 28 November 2017

NEWS New year flooring focus

At this time of the year the eyes of the furniture industry turn towards the NEC as preparations for its biggest annual gathering get into full swing. Flooring will have an enhanced area for the show’s Flooring Showcase in Hall 2, as part of an updated look for the event, and will be joined by an extended Fabric Pavilion.

Registration for the 2018 show is now open, and taking its usual slot on the third weekend in January, the show runs from Sunday 21st to Wednesday 24th. With over 500 exhibitors set to tempt buyers with 1000s of new designs in furniture, flooring, fabrics, lighting and interior accessories, its going to be a packed event. With more and more furniture retailers choosing to stock flooring sections in their stores in order to give consumers a one-stop interiors shopping experience, flooring is becoming increasingly important at the show. Well known flooring companies exhibiting their new collections for 2018 this January include Furlong Flooring, Abingdon Flooring, Forbo, Associated Weavers, Think Rugs, MCD, Rama Carpets, Gooch International and Ball & Young. Show partner the SMG buying group also has a stand at the show. The stature of the January Furniture Show has grown since its inception in 2015 and in its forth year the show looks set to burst previous exhibitor and attendance records. Expected to attract nearly 22,000 visitors in 2018, the show has a reach across buyers from department and high-end retail stores, large and small independent furniture and interiors stores, interior designers and design companies, hotel, leisure and contract buyers, interior specifiers and garden centres. Including buyers from John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Next, Debenhams, AIS and Minerva members.

The sexiest underlay you will never see

With 90% of the show space already booked visitors will find that that the exhibitors don’t stand still and neither does the show. It is keeping up with its ever-developing exhibitors with a fresh new look and a crisp new website, giving visitors plenty of pre-show information about who and what they can expect to see. Like previous years visiting couldn’t be easier, plenty of free parking with a frequent courtesy shuttle bus running between the halls and the car parks, and 25% discount on Virgins trains for anyone going to the show. The NEC’s facilities are some of the best of any UK venue, and the organisers have planned in plenty of little rest areas for those all-important coffee breaks and planning stops. www.januaryfurnitureshow.com

NEWS Fitting winner

Ian exits Balta

Ian Anderson, pictured third from left, celebrates his retirement with Balta sales team colleagues.

Balta celebrated with Ian Anderson, as he announced his retirement from the world of flooring. Recruited from Marley Floors by sales director Duncan Buchanan, Ian joined Balta in 1992 and retires as one of the company’s longest serving sales representatives.

For the last 25 years, as sales representative for Scotland and Northern Ireland, Ian has helped to establish Balta carpets in stores throughout the countries and has been hugely successful in his role. He leaves as a recent grandparent and will no doubt enjoy spending his well-earned retirement with his expanding family, as well as polishing his swing on the golf course. Pictured left to right: Ian James, winner Byron Terrett and show organiser Wendy Adams.

The winner of this year's Carpet Fitter of the Year competition The Flooring Show was Byron Terrett from the Vale of Glamorgan.

The competition ran over two days and showcased the craftsmanship and skills of the six finalists who were required to carry out two very challenging practical tests - the platform test was a stretch fit carpet which had a pillar in the middle and the carpet had to be seamed either side of it, and an obstacle in the corner with a low overhang and acute angles to make cutting and tucking of the carpet very challenging. The second test was a double-sided bullnose step to be handstitched. “What a privilege to take part, I'm truly shocked and honoured to win the title,” said Byron. “Over the years I have had the privilege of working alongside some extremely experienced and talented carpet fitters such as Mike Whale and Tim Nicholas. Both have competed in carpet and flooring fitter of the year. I have been inspired by them and this has motivated me to aim high and challenge myself.” There was a separate smaller element to the contest which was to construct a toolbag from carpet and this all had to be handmade prior to the finals in Harrogate and a separate prize was awarded for this task; this element was won by Dan Evans of Cambridgeshire. T 0115 958 3077 www.nicfltd.org.uk

Duncan Buchanan, sales director, Balta Carpets: “I am proud that Ian has been part of Balta for the last 25 years. He has been an exceptional employee and more so, he has been a delight to work with. In that time, you get a true understanding of someone’s character and I have the pleasure in saying Ian is one of the kindest and most authentic people I know, as well as being excellent in his choice of career.” Everyone at Balta wishes Ian a very happy retirement and he will be missed by all that have worked alongside him. Leading the change

Ulster Carpets are very happy to announce the appointment of Andrew Gicquel as Residential Sales Manager for the Uk and Ireland.

Andrew has been with Ulster Carpets since 2013, where he took on the position of Areas Sales Representative for the Midlands. His experience in this role, as well as now 20 years of knowledge gained in the industry, has prepared Andrew well for his new position as Residential Sales Manager. This is an exciting period in the history Ulster Carpets, as the company continues its long term facilities redevelopment. Andrew will be overseeing new products, POS and growing sales. He is enthused by the challenges ahead and is looking forward to leading in a managerial role during this time. T 028 3833 4433 www.ulstercarpets.com

Future forward with IVC

Maaike Dickx has been appointed product manager for the Leoline and Avenue flooring brands from IVC Group.

A graduate of the LUCA School of Arts, Maaike is an experienced creative marketeer and is ideally positioned to work with the design team to develop new styles for the brands, ensuring that Leoline and Avenue remain the musthave vinyl flooring brands in homes across the country. Maaike’s responsibilities include developing and launching new product for both brands, focusing on design and ensuring that any new styles answer demand in the market. Highlights from her previous role include responsiblilty for the brand of the highly popular iSense collection. “After eight years in communication, I realised I wanted something more and needed to be involved in the creation of the product itself, rather than just marketing a concept,” explains Maaike. “The opportunity to join Europe’s largest heterogeneous vinyl manufacturer in just such a role was just too exciting to ignore.” Joining a team of hugely experienced product designers, developers and marketers, Maaike will be making regular visits to the UK; visiting retailers, trade fairs and interior design events to make sure that the next generation of Leoline and Avenue products are future-forward. 32 November 2017

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

British Wool at Grand Designs

British Wool’s feature installation at the ever-popular Grand Designs Live event at the NEC looked very good and proved very successful with the visitors.

Working in partnership with eleven brands, British Wool aimed to directly target consumers at the event with the wool message. The stand which focused on wool and wellbeing displayed a range of British Wool products including carpets, beds, bedding, furniture and accessories.

Left to Right Ruckstuhl Feltro, Brockway Galloway, Axminster Jacob Tweed, Alternative Flooring Crafty Hound, Jacaranda Tapanui Porcelain, Axminster Hazy Days Walking the Dog, Crucial Trading Sisool, Crucial Trading Wool Pride

Wool Week’s Wonderful Wool Gallery - Wool Fusion Wool Week in the UK saw ‘Wool Fusion’, a stunning event in central London which combined all the key areas of interiors from flooring to furnishing with fashion, film and a bold display of interiors photography.

The gallery style event was open to the public over the entire week (7th to 15th October) and saw many visitors over the course of its nine days. Carpet played an important part in the exhibition and was displayed in innovative ways and with a distinct fusion focus which set the tone of the whole event.

Flooring in British Wool from Ulster Carpets with the dramatic ‘Fusion Reverb’ in denim, Brockway Carpets with ‘Lakeland Herdwick' and Adam Carpets with ‘Castlemead Twist’ brought a feeling of undeniable luxury to the stand which clearly demonstrated why wool carpets make such a difference to underfoot comfort.

The new retail promotion, which links consumers and carpet retailers through the WoolRetailer.com website gave an added bonus to those that stopped to admire the product on display. The potential to win money via a prize draw for those purchasing a British wool product provided plenty of conversation with the home interest visitors - many of whom attend with a definite project and budget in mind.

A series of events and workshops were held throughout, including ‘An Alternative Fusion’ which saw Lorna Haigh and Margo Selby informally discuss their successful collaboration on carpet design following the Wool Week launch of the Margo Selby Stripe Collection.

Brintons formed a collaborative partnership with the weaver Angie Parker Textiles which delivered a beautiful grey tonal design to the simple stairway in the venue. Called ‘Fryktlos’ meaning ‘Fearless’, based on Angie’s description of her design process - as a ‘fearless use of colour’. The design was originally woven using a technique called ‘krokbragd’, which originated in Norway.

The pairing of Angie’s organic hand woven design skills with Brintons, the leading commercial woven carpet brand has allowed this design to be produced as an axminster carpet in a very short time. Brintons used their ‘Inception’ QuickWeave palette which is specifically created for interior designers and clients who work on assignments with tight deadlines. The QuickWeave collection is a made-to-order woven axminster carpet range offering a turnaround time of just 6 weeks.

Other carpet brands including Axminster Carpets, Crucial Trading, Brockway Carpets, Ruckstuhl and Jacaranda which together formed a clever, interesting and impactful ‘wool divider’ which gave an eye-level and tactile display for different styles of neutral flooring. “Wool Week is a key consumer date in the wool textile year and we have been able to promote the many benefits of the fibre during Wool Fusion whilst also celebrating wool carpet in ways that inspired and refreshed visitor interest,” Bridgette kelly, interior textiles director of the Campaign for Wool said.

34 November 2017

“Grand Designs is a show that attracts the right kind of audience for us. It is attended by those that are looking for fresh ideas and information to help them source and select products for their developments an, redecoration projects.” Graham Clark, head of marketing explained.

“We had an extremely busy few days at the event and a lot of interest in the products and the many benefits of wool. This is the first stage of our new marketing strategy which will see us targeting consumers directly with the British Wool message.”

Marketing insights Palettes, patterns and organic design It’s true, the grey palette has entrenched its position as the new neutral, but its versatility has made it easy to introduce new colours. And, there’s a real contrast in colour palettes depending on which grey you choose. This contrast continues into design, with organic patterns sitting alongside structured shapes.

Brintons, Warm Industrial Trend Mood-board

Brintons have been showcasing the versatility of carpet with regular trend mood-boards on the inspirations section of their website. For example, carpet may not be the first floorcovering to spring to mind when talking about industrial interiors but adding a beautiful wool-rich broadloom can really enhance the warm element of this trend and help to set off cooler surfaces. Geometric patterns should be kept simple and linear so something like Regina Slate Trellis is a great example of a patterned carpet which works well in these settings. With a trend that is so focussed on the juxtaposition of cold and warm, velvet carpets are a great way to bring in texture, Brintons velvets are specially developed to give added splendour, with higher pile heights and denser row counts these carpets will bring warmth and softness into a space to contrast with the cooler marbles and concretes. A soft grey such as Brintons Majestic Polished Silver fits well into this palette or if grey’s not your thing then try True Velvet Trenchcoat which emulates the cork surfaces which are key to this look. Adam Carpets are renowned for their in-depth research into new trends which has been borne out by their correct forecasting of the last two Pantone Colour of the Year. Their mood-board point of sale also brought trend forecasting to the attention of many retailers and how striking it could look within their stores. Their latest boards were on display at the Harrogate Show. “The colour combination for 2018 looks like being navy and gold” said Eamonn Prescott, Sales Director at Adam Carpets. “We are increasingly seeing these two colours put together within the interiors market.” 36 November 2017

“Going into the colder months, dark and intense colours will prove to be popular. These colours create a feeling of comfort and cosiness, so reds such as burgundy come through and are placed with metallics such as copper and gold for a sense Adam Carpets, Greenhouse Mood-board of luxury.” “Don’t forget to have fun either.” continues Eamonn. “Yellow, coral, raspberry and teal are bright, clean, playful colours which will also be strong during the Winter.” Ulster Carpets have recently launched a number of new ranges, containing products that traverse across the design spectrum. Ulster's aim has been to make patterned carpet more accessible, appealing to a wide range of tastes. HΛBITÜS blends contemporary patterns and comforting textures with neutral colourways all with an intricate loop pile. The HΛBITÜS range has been produced in keeping with the quiet, understated aesthetic found in Danish design. With 4 new designs and 6 different colour ways, there are plenty of exceptional options to choose from. The designs within the Fusion range maintain their familiarity but have been re-visited to have a completely modern feel with blues, greys and neutrals that are perfect for current colouring. Ulster's latest Axminster range, "Watercolours" mimics washes of watercolour pigment softly blending into the paper. These effortless textures are layered over classic designs to give an antiqued effect - that of a textile treasured over time so that only fragments of the pattern remain. Throughout each of these new ranges Ulster have identified a number of different sources of inspiration. From homely comforts, to naturally occurring elements and contemporary urban architecture.

The 4-ply yarn in 100% undyed wool makes it soft and luxurious, and comes in 4m and 5m widths for contemporary texture anywhere in the home. This fabulous new range is uniquely characteristic of Brockway as ‘The home of wool carpets,” helping sustain the population of some of the UK’s rarest breeds of hill sheep. “Our aim is to combine British craftsmanship using the finest raw materials to ensure the sustainable manufacture of awardwinning carpets, which offer great value for money,” says Shaun.

We caught up with Karndean Designflooring, to see how they have addressed the grey trend.“We’ve noticed that homeowners are increasingly looking to greys to give their space a more contemporary feel and this isn’t surprising because it’s a very neutral, versatile colour,” comments Stella Coyle, National Retail Sales Manager at Karndean Designflooring. “We’ve recognised that traditional basketweave effects are back in style and when paired with parquet or full length designs they can make a real impact. So, we recently introduced the multi-tonal grey hues of Storm Oak to our Art Select collection in matching full-length plank, parquet, and basketweave formats, which is ideal for those looking to achieve the same colour floor throughout with an alternative format or as a standalone rug effect to break up individual spaces.”

Brockway, Rare Breeds Loop Linen

Shortlisted in the floor coverings category of The FX Design Awards, the collection is hand-woven at the company's factory in India's historic centre for the production of fine, hand-loomed carpets and rugs.

Full of charm and character, Art Select is recognised for featuring the most beautiful natural timber effects with intricate and realistic handcrafted embosses. With traditional dark and rich brown tones already available as part of the Art Select Oak Royale collection, this new, cool, ashy grey tone will be extremely popular with individuals looking for a more modern feel. Brockway are on-trend with a focus on back to nature. “More and more people are choosing natural wool carpets to create an organic feel in the home,” says Shaun Lewis, Sales Director at Brockway.

ITC Natural Luxury Flooring, manufacturers of luxury carpets and rugs has launched The Eco Collection, to satisfy the growing demand for products which meet high standards of environmental and social responsibility.

The carpets are made using only 100% superior quality, undyed wool, cotton, jute and a natural latex backing. They are moth-proof, but without the range of additional chemical additives used in so many contemporary floor coverings. ITC, Eco Loop

“Bringing natural materials indoors is a big interior design trend for 2017. And our 100% pure undyed wool ranges come with a colour palette of neutral and earthy hues that create the perfect modern, back to nature look,” he explains.

The Eco Collection comes in six contemporary muted colours and three different styles, Eco Velvet, Eco Loop and Eco Rib, offering a contrasting weave and texture, but all opulently soft to the touch. With a class 33 classification and a fire certification Bfl-s1 rating for Eco Velvet and Eco Rib, and Cfl-s1 for Eco Loop, this collection is ideal for high-end residential and corporate hospitality locations, and is supplied in four and five metre widths. Bespoke rugs can also be ordered in any size up to a maximum width of 500cm, and finished with a colour co-ordinating tape.

Galloway is the latest addition to Brockway’s signature ranges of pure undyed wool carpets. Available in 3 styles and 6 natural colourways, it is the chunkiest loop pile carpet yet.

Marketing insights Lano, Cashmere Displayed on a back-to-back unit, Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe come in a palette dominated by modern tones; sophisticated greys and off-whites give an elegant and contemporary feel to the range. Taking full advantage of Halcyon’s exceptional softness in an exclusive 13th gauge construction for a sumptuous feel and soughtafter velvet look.

Cormar Carpets, Soft Focus Heathers

Gary Alp, UK Sales Manager at Lano comments, “We wanted to make sure that our new Halcyon fibre could be enjoyed by as many homes as possible, so we developed Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe to share the same palette, but with different qualities, so that homeowners could choose their perfect colour in a make-up that suits their budget.”

“The new neutrals palette of putty, pencil and charcoal still rule the colour charts and whatever the shade, cool or warm, grey remains the go-to colour” David Cormack, Cormar Carpets “The new neutrals palette of putty, pencil and charcoal still rule the colour charts and whatever the shade, cool or warm, grey remains the go-to colour,” says David Cormack, Marketing Director of Cormar Carpets. The hue works well in any interior scheme as it’s not a scene stealer. Coupled with the trend for super soft carpets – which have brought a new dimension to the market - grey shades look sophisticated in living rooms, make bedrooms feel soothing and create a welcoming space in entrances. Cormar see the demand for practical, easy clean carpets in soft luxurious textures to continue. And see this trend showing no signs of waning. David explains why, “Polypropylene qualities have improved significantly over the past few years which means we can now achieve the tactile feel without compromising on practicality. All of our collections now include a wide variety of greys – from silvery greys to deep charcoals - including our new easy clean Soft Focus Heathers and Apollo Elite ranges which were showcased at The Flooring Show in Harrogate.”

Available in four and five-metre widths with Lano’s newly developed ‘smart’ backing that combines the benefits of action and felt-backed carpets, Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe come with 10-year stain and wear warranties. Flair Rugs is gearing up for Autumn with the release of an updated Simplicity line-up, as well as a major overhaul of its core offering. The budget-focus of Simplicity has won many fans and sees new ontrend pastels of pink and duck egg blue added to the shaggy Dazzle Flair Rugs, Abstract Collage Multi RS

Lano is bridging the gap between stain-resistant performance and the look of luxurious nylon velvets with their new fibre Halcyon. Specially developed for the dense and plush piles of velvet carpets, Halcyon is a solution-dyed yarn that has been engineered to give softness and a silk look. The new fibre features in Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe.

Review 2017

Maximum attraction to tempt consumers Trading and trend report from the The Flooring Show 2017

It may have been a slow summer for trade in much of the flooring sector but Harrogate demonstrated that the designers and product developers had little time off in recent months with a strong selection of new options for retailers to entice consumers to start spending again. Still softly, softly

The strength of the soft sector shows little signs of subsiding. Furlong capped a sensational year with super-soft Solitaire to showcase its Essenzo Collection which extends the range while Abingdon added another soft polyester to its Love Story collection and Cormar turned towards heathers to build on its soft success. LVT in the ascendant

LVT is a business in boom time at the moment and the industry is reacting to that opportunity with real quality and new innovation in product development. Market leaders like Earthwerks, Karndean and Amtico don’t rest on their laurels and Harrogate was a hotbed of new designs with superb examples of authenticity. It was interesting to see companies like Furlong Flooring best known for their carpet ranges, investing heavily in a compelling range of new vinyl.

The marketing of wool benefits - or “woolabilities” as they seem to have been charmingly christened – is becoming increasingly coordinated across the interested parties such as British Wool, Campaign for Wool and the Wool Carpet Focus group – and it was noticeable that the flammability issue (or rather the lack of it in wool) has risen up the agenda. Patterns outperform palettes

The colour palette hasn’t moved much in the last year or so, and predictions that grey was going to give way back to beige have been unsubstantiated. Both carpet and hard flooring is still re-colouring with a preponderance of grey. Undyed wool is attractive to sophisticated consumers at present. Adam have added to their successful Pure Brit in this department and Hugh Mackay have a fine, upmarket offer in their Handmade Collection. Victoria also say they are seeing excellent demand for these ultra natural fibres.

Rigid core LVT is coming though strongly into the market with Karndean’s Korlock, QA’s Luvanto Endure and Lifestyle Floors Colosseum PEC with the promise that retailers who have been wary of installation issues with LVT may find these products more accessible, often requiring no sub-floor preparation and an easy fit for laminate specialists. Strength in numbers

The flooring industry is fortunate to have top quality buying groups which help negotiate great deals and protect their members from price driven competition but it is noticeable how sophisticated these groups are getting in adding value to membership with professional marketing services. Watching wool

Wool has been under intense pressure from polypropylene and, increasingly, polyester and to some extent, the new launches in wool were design driven with the artistry of companies like Axminster, Adam, Brockway, Brintons and Ulster. But 2017 has seen plenty of action in mainstream wool twists and loops for robust, reliable performance – Kingmeads’ new Weald Park, Witter’s New Innovation and new Colorado from Penthouse are great examples.

But pattern is coming on strong with small subtle designs and geometrics doing well in wool and synthetics with companies like Axminster, Adam, Lifestyle and Master Weavers adding some fine examples to the gallery. Bond Worth and Ulster have been experimenting with some superb watercolour painting effects and Fells have been doing everything across all styles – if you like pattern, check out their latest!

PE lessons

In the synthetic sector, polyester is the fibre of choice at the moment as an option to outperform polypropylene without the extra cost of nylon. Among several manufacturers, Abingdon are demonstrably down this track and the lastest launches from Victoria add to the options in PE. One to watch

In terms of new entrants into the market, Contempo looks like the one to watch in the year ahead having arrived in the UK with an intelligent approach to whole-home coordinated carpets in plains and patterns and a well thought-through and well resourced marketing programme.

Adam Carpets

Flooring with Flare! Adam Carpets has established itself as an exceptional company when it comes to smart, sophisticated carpets and Harrogate was a showcase of their latest creations in wool. The latest launch is the fashionable Flare collection, a dedicated herringbone range with a linear pattern in 2-ply 80/20 British wool with Nylon. “This is a beautifully designed and coloured range, which we see as an alternative for consumers who want to move on from stripes,” says Eamonn Prescott of Adam.” Although some may view as a niche product, we believe there is a market for it and that the strong margins that the retailer can achieve will make it extremely desirable.”

Adam pay a lot of attention to colour – this is the company after all that curates the Fine Worcester Twist collection and has recently teamed up with the Little Greene paint company for coordination. So it’s no surprise that selecting those ten colours for Flare took almost a year to bring to market. Eamonn tells us, for example, that they started with 75 shades of grey to get to the three options that were finally selected for the range.

“This is a beautifully designed and coloured range, which we see as an alternative for consumers who want to move on from stripes”

Another innovative new launch at The Flooring Show was Pure Brit Supreme, a clever development of the popular Pure Brit twist in which a third of the twist has been taken out and the fibre lengthened and bulked out to make a superb 55oz saxony. This is an 80/20 product using undyed British wool (hence “Pure Brit”!) with 10% each of polyester and polypropylene. “We have high hopes for this new range,” says Eamonn. “Again, it’s really quite different from anything else out there. It looks and feels great and has impeccable credentials and I’m pleased to say it has had a very good reaction at the show.”get it – fast!” T 01562 829966 www.adamcarpets.co.uk

SEBO Power to the people

If you’ve heard about the new regulations that reduce power on vacuum cleaners – relax, SEBO has it sorted! The EU rules mean that vacuum cleaners made from September 1st were limited to less than 900W and 80 decibels of noise which has caused consternation in some quarters. But SEBO just suck it up! The UK flooring industry’s favourite vacuum cleaner manufacturer have just launched the latest X7 ePower which has been carefully engineered to extract the maximum suction performance from those 900 watts – and a design overhaul makes it look pretty awesome too. The X7 replaces SEBO’s X4 the UK’s best selling bagged upright cleaner – and comes with the same longevity that have made these machines legendary. Flooring stores can take advantage of SEBO’s special scheme to fulfill orders direct with as little hassle as possible for the retailer. T 01494 465533 • www.sebo.co.uk

Kingsmead Carpets Retail reliability

kingsmead came to Harrogate with the launch of just the sort of wool carpet that retailers like to sell and sell well! Weald Park is a branded British Wool 80/20 twist that’s priced competitively. “We’ve designed an entry-level twist that’s well made and robust so that retailers can rely on its performance,” said Kingsmead’s Graham Harris. The range is likely to become a new wool classic with a fresh palette of 10 heather blended shades covering the best-selling sector of modern greys and beige and with two weights and 4 and 5m widths there are plenty of options. 01827 831424 • www.kingsmeadcarpets.co.uk

Kingsmead Clean Easy Rapturous reception

“People want carpet that works,” says Graham Harris about kingsmead’s Clean Easy range and he came to the Flooring Show to launch two excellent examples of the type. Rapture is a distinctive heavyweight Saxony in 100% polypropylene that’s built to perform but its fine solid colour appearance is unusual in a market dominated by lots of salt-and-pepper type colourways and attracted a lot of attention at the show. The other newcomer is Remarkable which lives up to its name in that it is available in a choice of two weights – a relatively unusual feature in the 100% polypropylene sector. Graham describes the range as “a nice tight twist which is soft but not too soft!” That is likely to appear to retailers and consumers alike and with a choice of 12 colours the range has a lot to offer. 01827 831424 • www.kingsmeadcarpets.co.uk

Furlong Flooring

Essentially Essenzo Furlong Flooring’s showcase stand at Harrogate shows how their business has developed and grown right at the centre of the mainstream market for super soft performance polypropylene. Under the company’s new flagship brand, Essenzo, they have built on the success of Solitaire which has become a market leader since its launch at the show a year ago. Now Solitaire is joined by sister ranges at price points above and below with Aria as a lighter weight carpet but with plenty of substance alongside the softness and Spirito is the heavyweight for those who are serious about their levels of luxury.

“Furlong has had a phenomenal year with Solitaire and its success has helped us invest in new product development”

“Furlong has had a phenomenal year with Solitaire and its success has helped us invest in new product development,” says sales director Neil Valentine. The result is a go-to portfolio across the board that matches anything in the market for competitiveness and excels in terms of quality and performance.” Neil is also keen to emphasise that their investment has also gone into the service systems that support the immediate delivery of these UK-made carpets from three expanded distribution hubs across the UK. Furlong’s one-stop shop approach as a flooring supplier was in evidence across the aisle at Harrogate as the company has extensively developed its business in LVT, laminates and woods under their Natural Solutions (see page 61) brand plus cushionfloor under the Design Elements label. “The breadth of the flooring we offer from a single source is unrivalled in the market and we have enjoyed a lot of recognition for getting it right in terms of supply and service,” says Neil. “There’s no secret to this success. We just listen to what our customers want and make sure they get it – fast!” T 01772 696787 • www.regencycarefree.co.uk

Brintons Making a scenery

Brintons really stole the show with a stand display based around a threedimensional landscape of the rolling British rolling countryside and a coastline complete with sailing ship all fashioned from their carpet ranges. The display is the physical incarnation of the stunning advertising campaign that the company launched earlier this year which uses a carpet collage to paint the scenery. The impact is reminiscent of the stunning Vivienne Westwood dresses created by Brintons and paraded around the Harrogate halls in the Nineties. “We were excited to show off our new ‘Bring your home to life’ campaign at The Flooring Show. We want to illustrate the breadth of colour and texture within the Brintons stocked range and inspire homeowners to think about their flooring first,” says Natalie Littlehales, Marketing Manager for Brintons

Search “Bring Your Home To Life with Brintons Carpets” on YouTube for the amazing video of how this display was made!

Brintons have also announced the launch of their new website which provides inspirational ideas for home interiors alongside a shopping-style gallery of ranges and a store finder to link browsers to retailers. T 0800 505055 • www.brintons.net

Balterio Flooring fan club

Balterio promised that Grande would be a big deal when it was launched at the beginning of the year. It’s certainly large with plank options up to 2050mm by 240mm – but it’s also proved to be big business. “Retailers who have stocked and sold this range have become big fans,” says marketing manager Franky Terrijn. “There is a great appetite for realism in laminate and we have had a very positive reaction to the extra authenticity we can offer.” Digital production technology has driven Balterio products to a new level with print resolution at 300 dpi compared to the industry standard of 150-170 dpi and a pattern that repeats only after 28 planks rather than 8-10 planks in a conventional product. And critically, the new Balterio Grande range is waterproof with Hydroshield protection that makes them highly practical for kitchen and bathroom installations. “Wide and waterproof answers the current market’s needs for LVT,” says Franky. “We can mix wide and narrow long planks to enhance the realism and this gives a real parquet effect.” T +32 (0)56 62 80 81 • www.balterio.com

RMFS Eat up estimates

Brian Gray at RFMS tells the story of the flooring specialist who showed him a set of architect’s drawings that were going to take six hours to quote. “I told him to email them over and I sent the quote back in half an hour, and with a few options,” said Brian. This specialist became a customer for the RFMS Measure system, an impressive productivity tool that eats up estimates on carpet, LVT and laminates – drawing up room plans, allocates products (including accessories) with their widths and pattern repeats and generates estimates – and professional plans with 3D models as an option. The system can sit on your PC and also work remotely on the cloud for mobile devices in the consumer’s home, synchronizing back to the retail store for a seamless service. Measure is sold on a subscription basis with the standard package at £485 per year. Brian reckons it works at least five times faster than conventional quoting - think of all the other quotes you could be doing in the time it took you to do the last one! Associated Weavers

A triumphant return Associated Weavers made a triumphant return to the show after a seven-year absence from Harrogate and were rewarded by brisk business – described happily as “bedlam” on day one of the show by AW’s Regional Sales Manager Jonathan Davies as their stand welcomed the crowds. Much of the AW buzz was about Vivendi, the market leading solution-dyed nylon range, which had its debut at the beginning of the year to great acclaim for its “go-anywhere” performance of its new iVivo yarn with a 25-year warranty for wear and stain resistance.

Axminster Naturally British

It’s the most natural thing in the world! Axminster Carpets is reinforcing its credentials as an industry leader in the ethical and quality standards that have established the company’s reputation over decades. “We have made the commitment and it’s all about natural materials,” says Kaouther Montacer-Shilvock, Head of Marketing at the Devon company. The Axminster Carpets approach has three key principals which cover ‘craft’, Britishness and design. By craft, the company is making a commitment to invest in the wool industry, in people (both inside the company and among its retail partners) and in the carpet-making skills on which it’s legacy is built. Britishness is a central theme and the company is working though its operations to ensure the highest proportion of UK-sourced components possible, based around British wool, of course. And in design, the emphasis will be on natural, neutral colour choices with timeless classical patterns plus contemporary options including subtle geometrics and herringbone options. “We will pursue top quality and be reliable, but not boring,” says Kaouther. “Axminster Carpets is in evolution and we’re listening to what our customers want.” T 01297 32244 • www.axminster-carpets.co.uk

Campaign for Wool Dedicated followers of fashion

A key centerpiece of The Flooring Show at Harrogate is the Wool Trends Hub in Hall C which is an agenda-setting for visitors to get up to speed on interiors trends. The Hub is curated by the Campaign for Wool in association with leading wool houses including Adam Carpets, Axminster Carpets, Brockway, Cavalier and Ulster. The Campaign’s Bridgette Kelly said: “Each year we try to reflect what’s happening in the interiors market in a way that flooring retailers can respond to. “This year we have taken a cue from the wallpaper sector which has very fashionconscious designers who are leading the trends and providing a context for flooring,” says Bridgette. “We have used a selection of mid-market ranges which encourage consumers to think beyond plain carpet in order to create distinctive styles that are both fashionable and affordable.” T +44 (0) 20 7845 7800 • www.campaignforwool.org

Cybergold Sticking with it!

Cybergold are celebrating! 2017 marks the 20th anniversary of a company that has maintained an unassailable position in the market for non-slip products for rugs. Company founder Paul Mitchell was selling carpet tiles in the South of England when he recognized that many of the existing products in the non-slip market were underperforming. “I knew there was a problem to be solved and it began with a simple spray product that we patented and made and packaged by hand,” he says. Now the Buckinghamshire-based business holds the major UK market share in this business with a wide range of effective spray and anti-slip underlay products. “It feels good to still be here after all this time,” says Anna whose fellow director is husband Nick. Still innovating, Cybergold launched “Superlux’ at Harrogate – a new composite underlay with microfibre on one side and a tacky surface on the other which is highly effective to prevent rugs slipping on solid floors. Victoria Carpets

Strength to strength Victoria Carpets is building impressive strength and breadth into its comprehensive product portfolio with developments that continue to lead the market in key sectors. Their major initiative with solution-dyed nylon has seen the roll-out of soft-touch saxony Lasting Luxury this year to great acclaim in the market for its superb performance and bleach cleanable credentials. And Victoria’s brand leading 80/20 Tudor Twist has now completed its roll out across the country in three weights and with 42 colours plus six coordinating stripes – a substantial investment for the company. But there are plenty of brand new ideas in the mix and Harrogate saw the launch of Habberly, an innovation 70/30 wool-viscose loop and two new superb polyester products, Shimmer and Celestial. Habberley is a very fashionable chunky loop made from a soft 4-ply yarn which is 70% wool and 30% Tencel – a sustainable natural fibre made from wood cellulose which gives carpet colours a brighter appearance. This range is available in eight contemporary colours and in 4 and 5m widths. Shimmer uses a 2-ply polyester yarn for softness and performance which has been de-lustered to give it a more conventional twist finish – an ideal combination for the choice of mainstream consumers. It is available in 45 and 65oz weights. Its sister product Celestial uses a variation of the same fibre which is more lustrous and has a longer length to create a fine, luxury Saxony weighing in a little heavier at 55 and 75oz.

Novostrat Building on success

Novostrat are building on their success – literally! The performance underlay company is investing £3m in production facilities on a new 9-acre site at their base in Limerick in Ireland.

“Business has been going really well and we have had the happy problem of running out of capacity to meet the demand,” says Tony Taibi. The company specializes in foam manufacturing primarily for the packaging industry but the underlay operation is a key business for the group and Novostrat has had great recognition for the performance of its products for wood and laminate floors. QA Flooring Luvanto luxury

Luvanto LVT Flooring by QA has undergone a smart brand overhaul and a substantial upgrade to the range. QA’s vision is to be one of the leading brands in LVT, with an emphasis on being deliberately selective of colours and styles to provide a very desirable offering to retailers and consumers. The immediate signs of the approach are the overhaul of the Luvanto colour range in which a third of the decors have changed, reflecting current interiors trends in muted shades and subtle greys. All 30 colours are available in Design (glued installation) and Click (DIY installation). And new for Harrogate was Luvanto Endure, a high performance rigid LVT product with a 0.7 wear layer, which has a lifetime residential and 20 years in commercial warranty. Endure includes an acoustic backing with a 19dB rating so the underlay is built in! This has been introduced in response to consumer demand for higher value, more sophisticated products and gives retailers the opportunity to up-sell from regular click LVT products. Stairrods Rounding the bend

Stairrods is a powerhouse of ideas to make the fitter’s life easier and more interesting and the latest launch at this year’s Harrogate show attracted huge attention with Premier Bendybull for LVT on domestic stairs. This is a nosing profile for use with 6mm plywood which can be curved on site and it comes in two options for 2.5 and 3mm dryback and 4 and 5mm slot size later in the year and in Stairrods’ sophisticated range of 10 finishes. “We reckon about 60% of domestic stairs in the UK have a bull nose and we’ve listened to our customers who can spend time templating and waiting a week or two for a commercial looking nosing,” says John Raine of Stairrods. Winning with wool

SMG The retailers “best friend”

SMG describes itself as the “best value buying group” and with the largest membership in the sector covering more than 380 Uk stores their formula certainly works for flooring. “There is increasing interest from independent retailers to be part of a group that can give them the maximum price competitiveness in the most flexible way possible,” says SMG’s Mike Reed. The group deals with all the major suppliers in flooring – but also has close relationships with furniture, beds, blinds and curtain suppliers for those stores looking to diversify and increase footfall. Interfloor

Products with premium

Interfloor is all about quality and its impressive progress to develop exceptional solutions across all its product sectors has been quite visible in the market over the last two years. “People have seen the difference and there is the highest level of confidence in our products among retailers,” says Laura Ashall, marketing director at Interfloor. “Discussing better quality underlays and accessories with consumers can generate substantial extra revenues and transform the business performance of a store.” Leading the campaign in 2017 are Interfloor’s Premium High Density (PHD) underlays. Interfloor sales director Gary Cowley commented: “The trend for increasingly luxurious and comfortable interiors means many of our retail customers are keen to add firmer PU products to their offer.” There are three products in the range – at 8, 9 and 10mm - all manufactured from recycled foam at 180kg/m3 to offer great comfort and carpet protection alongside excellent heat insulation and high acoustic ratings.

“The trend for luxury means many of our retail customers are keen to add firmer PU products to their offer.” The company’s trusted brands such as Tredaire, Duralay, Gripperods and Stikatak have all been updated and re-branded in attractive new styling over the last year. A new feature for the Gripperrods range is a branded version of the metal profiles with the product name punched through the metal to ensure retailers know they have a genuine, top quality product. Over in the Harrogate demo zones, fitters were able to check out the latest improvements to Interfloor’s classleading stick-down system Duralay Durafit. Masterpiece No going back

Masterpiece continue to develop its popular measuring, planning and estimating software with the sort of friendly features that work the way real people in the industry work – only faster! “A system like this needs to work the way you do already but make it all easier, quicker and more professional,” says Charles Pearson whose software is used by hundreds of independents along with groups like John Lewis and Carpetright. “Once people have used it, they don’t want to go back!” he adds. Recent improvements have added to the functionality of the cloud version to keep estimators mobile, increasing their productivity while the information they collect is immediately available to the store. Apart from the ease and speed of estimating, Charles cites the accuracy of the system and the ability to prepare multiple quotes to check out all the options. Precise underlay estimating can be difficult conventionally but Masterpiece makes this easy, offering valuable incremental savings on installations. Another advantage is that the store can go back to old jobs which were measured a year or more ago. Thus avoiding hunting in the roof or basement or having to visit to re-measure. So maybe, in a sort of way, there is an incentive to ‘go back’! T 01737 355831 • www.masterpiece-system.com

Cavalier Colourful credentials

Cavalier Carpets has lots of new colour to talk about as some of its best selling ranges have been remixed to ensure they are right up-to-date with current trends. The luxury 65oz velvet Envy is a good example with an extra four grey shades in its 10-colour collection. “Velvet is selling strongly at the moment,” says Cavalier’s Nathan Lowe (pictured left). “But there is a recognition that if you are going to go velvet, you have to do it properly and go for the higher end. Envy is right on target for this market.” Cavalier’s popular 80/20 berbers in the Country Collection have also seen an overhaul with five new colours and on the synthetic side, its best-selling polypropylene range Stain-less Distinction has added five new colours to its 14 shade selection. Cavalier’s sharp point-of-sale system has now been joined by the “Selectern”, a unique system which gives retailers the flexibility to choose to display 2, 3 or 4 ranges on standalone units or integrated with a wall stand. Contempo

Coordinated quality

“The reaction at Harrogate has been fantastic and we now have everything in stock and we are ready to roll”

Contempo are the newest entrant into the Uk carpet market and they are intent on doing things properly – “re-imagining carpet the way it should be” says the slogan on their launch marketing material at The Flooring Show and the company’s presentation looks distinctively different. Contempo is a fleece-to-floor operation with a British wool licence, spinning and dyeing the yarn through to carpet manufacturing in the UK and its core focus is on coordination. “We think that quality interior design is increasingly centred on a coordinated approach throughout the home,” says Steve Evans of Contempo. “To follow this trend, we have created collections that are designed to harmonise with one another, whether it is plains or pattern, and we have worked across 93 colours to create a totally integrated solution that combines colour, texture and design seamlessly. “The reaction at Harrogate has been fantastic and we now have everything in stock and we are ready to roll,” says Steve.

“Quality interior design is increasingly centred on a coordinated approach throughout the home” Two showcase collections demonstrate the approach. Nexus is a hard wearing range of luxury 2-ply twists with a Plains selection of 33 colours and the Mouline selection of 26 combinations in a shimmery two-colour stipple. These colours coordinate beautifully with the patterned Bauhaus range, a fashionable collection of three print designs, geometric circles and squares plus a sophisticated plaid – nine designs in each. This design-oriented company will also be fast to respond to the latest fashions with short-run collections to catch the eye of savvy consumers. Two examples were seen at the show with Monokrøm, a celebration of on-trend silvers and greys, and Sepia, a comforting collection of warm hues. With up-market merchandising including some of the most futuristic POS units seen in the sector and well-thought-through literature, Contempo is all set to make a big impression. Abingdon Carpets

Lovin’ it with passion Abingdon’s loving relationship with super-soft carpet started 18 months ago and the passion shows no signs of cooling as the company launch the latest – and potentially one of the greatest – in their Love Story Collection which now comprise six ranges. Abingdon’s loving relationship with super-soft carpet started 18 months ago and the passion shows no signs of cooling with the company’s launch of Pure Indulgence, the latest – and potentially one of the greatest – in their Love Story Collection which now comprise six ranges. The Collection is primarily based on Abingdon’s polyester fibre which gives performance and softness with the added advantage that it is bleach cleanable. The others in the series have a luxurious sheen but with Pure Indulgence, Abingdon has delustered the yarn to create an even more subtle look, which is slightly more velvety, while being a little chunky in feel.

In the wool business, under Abingdon’s Wilton Royal brand, the company showed its updated new Royal Windsor range in 100% British Wool with an allnew set of 12 colour options – a wool range that is available in 2.5m as well as 4 and 5m. Royal Windsor has the added attraction of a soft fleece backing which is not only fitter friendly and reduces the danger of abrasion damage in the home during installation, it also feels more natural and soft when the consumer handles their carpet samples in store.

“We wanted to add something distinctive to the collection and Pure Indulgence has turned out really well,” says Abingdon’s Martin Peace. “It’s all about soft and this is a sophisticated carpet in the sector that we think is going to be a star performer. It’s had a great reaction at Harrogate and this is now a collection that retailers really trust,” said Martin.

“We wanted to add something distinctive to the collection and Pure Indulgence has turned out really well” Pure Indulgence is available in multi-width options from 2.5 to 5m and in 12 colours. Other launches at the show included a fledgling star Stainfree Grande which looks like a mainstream strong seller for the company. A nice tightly twisted Saxony with a very soft touch, Grande is available in seven colours and currently 4m rolls only – though reaction at the show is prompting the company to consider cut lengths and a wider colour bank. “You can just tell this carpet will perform well when you handle it,” says Martin.

Lifestyle Floors

Accessible, friendly LVT for retailers The Lifestyle Floors stand at The Flooring Show is always brimming with ideas and this year’s presentation was exceptional with a special focus on a potentially market-leading LVT product that looks set for strong sales in the near future. This is Colosseum PEC luxury vinyl flooring – that’s Precision Engineered Core LVT – a technology that the company says is the “next big thing” and which retailers are finding more user friendly than conventional LVT products. “This is a technology which will be of particular interest for retailers who perhaps haven’t take the step into LVT and have been put off in the past by concerns over the installation requirements of traditional forms of LVT,” says Inga Morris-Blincoe of Lifestyle. This LVT has a rigid core with an integrated cork backing, making it similar to laminate to fit, but with the warmth and quietness of vinyl. It’s waterproof so is reliable to specify for all areas of the home or contract environment including kitchens or bathrooms. Critically, its rigidity and cork base can even out imperfections in the sub-floor meaning that in many installations, minimal preparation is required – especially over existing hard and flat floors. Colosseum PEC is available with the latest click technology with interlocking channels on the length and a three-point fold-down locking system on the short ends to speed up installation. The new range is based on the 14 best-selling decors of the company’s established Colosseum with 12 wood styles and two tiles, plus two new tiles in fashionable greys to offer a 16-colour collection in total. A smart new dedicated point-of-sale unit has been designed for the collection. T 01675 433519 • www.lifestyle-floors.co.uk

A new addition to the flagship polyester range Admiration was on show at Harrogate with a new Heather collection in 12 colours which is set to be a strong seller. Edel Telenzo Subtle style

Edel Telenzo seem to specialize in subtle style that catches the mood of the market and Harrogate was the first chance for many retailers to see the new wool loops Hoxton and Primrose. Both ranges capture the trend for small pattern and texture and they share the same colour bank of elegant muted colour which are dyed into 100% New Zealand wool. Hoxton, showcased as the main carpet on the stand, is a gentle cross-stitch design while Primrose has a subtle stripe. “These are our premium products and we have had a very good reaction from retailers who know that consumers who are discerning about design will pay for this kind of quality,” says Mark Rooney of Edel Telenzo. Distinctive Flooring Timeless classics

Distinctive Flooring set themselves a high bar at last year’s Harrogate show for the beautiful intricacy of their stand floor installation and they didn’t disappoint again this time with a stunning display of very contemporary floor design. Not to mention the difficulty of cutting the company’s tricky typeface into the vinyl on the floor! The showcase floor introduced two new collections from Distinctive, Timeless which has seven woods and eight stones which, with its registered embossed treatment, gives a beautifully featured surface. The second debut was Craftsman in five wood decors which Distinctive’s Jay Taylor described as a “richness of subtle colours.” Visitors were enthusiastic about both. “We’ve had a great reaction to the new ranges,” said Jay. “There’s a lot of nice LVT around but I think people have realized that these products are just a bit extra special.” T 01274 655668 • www.distinctiveflooring.co.uk

Natural Solutions Fast lane of flooring

Natural Solutions has accelerated in the fast lane of flooring to become a leading brand in resilient flooring and wood with a portfolio of products that allows retailers to present themselves as flooring specialists above and beyond their carpet ranges. Four exclusive LVT ranges in dryback and click, three exclusive laminates including a fashionable herringbone and 12 engineered wood planks – and a solid oak floor – suggests that Natural Solutions means business. “This is now a key strategic business for Furlong and we have been able to grow the portfolio into a comprehensive and competitive offer that retailers can really work with to extend their business,” said national sales manager Richard Richman. The big launch at the Flooring show was Sirona, a new LVT range with 16 wood decors and 4 tiles in a high performance product with 4-sided micro-bevel and surface embossing. Available in click and dryback, Sirona has a 0.3mm wear layer. “We have also developed new point-of-sale which is an integral part of the sales proposition,” says Richard. “The merchandising is carefully designed so that retailers can create a hard flooring showroom within their store that looks professional and inviting.” Alongside the latest LVT, Natural Solutions were showcasing their new flex-pro underlay for LVT which is a major advance in enabling many installations to go ahead with no need for screeding – often a major obstacle for retailers in dealing with consumers on LVT. Flex-pro covers minor imperfections and smooths out the contours of the existing floor to ensure a hassle-free project. T 01322 628707 www.furlongwoodflooring.co.uk

Cormar Carpets Heathers in Focus

Cormar’s product development team has had a busy year bringing forward five new launches in 2017 with the emphasis on high performance synthetic fibres. The company’s Sensation range led the super-soft charge in 2012 of course and Cormar re-coloured the best-selling range this summer with sampling of the fashionable 20-colour range going out to market right now. New for Harrogate was Soft Focus Heathers (pictured below, centre) with strong, contemporary greys and neutrals among 12 heather shades. This tenth-gauge carpet uses the same soft polypropylene Finesse yarn as in the original Soft Focus plains range launched earlier this year. “Soft Focus has been so popular for us that it make sense to broaden the palette and give consumers the choice of more tonal colours,” said David Cormack of Cormar. Cormar has also added a more premium option to its entry-level Apollo Plus range, developing Apollo Elite with a heavier weight fibre and a slightly deeper pile. “In an uncertain economic climate, this well-priced carpet will appeal to homeowners looking for affordable quality,” says David. Cavendish Wilton is an example of innovation where a “shrink” yarn is used to create a carved effect in the carpet – this yarn contracts into the pile when heated giving more accurate definition to the sculptured effect and a very tactile effect. Kenburn Innovation that adds up

Installing a kenburn Carpet crusher for recycling new and uplifted carpet and underlay waste is a reasonably big investment but not a difficult decision to make. Whilst we’re all “keen to be green” it’s the financial implications of purchasing or renting a carpet crusher that dictate whether or not the investment is viable. Simon Wells from Kenburn comments: “Having launched our carpet recycling initative at The Flooring Show in 2014 we’re now fully aware of who we can help save money and who wouldn’t benefit from our scheme financially”. “The two factors we take into consideration are your current disposal costs per tonne including transport costs; and the volumes of waste you generate. “From gaining this information we can then advise on whether or not we can reduce your ever increasing skip costs,” he said. “A brief waste survey costs you nothing and there’s no obligation, we just provide professional and honest advice on the financial and environmental benefits of installing a Kenburn Carpet Crusher in order to divert your recyclable carpet and underlay waste from landfill”. “A retailer’s zero waste to landfill policy can also have a positive effect on potential new customers,” added Simon. Bondworth Design spirit

One of the most stylish designs that made its debut at Harrogate was Bond Worth’s new “Spirit of 45” – a subtle, stylish geometric design that will appeal to flooring fashionistas of the moment. “We have been exploring design in a more modern and intriguing style,” says MD Mark Oakes. “We want to challenge assumptions about Bond Worth and make people look again.” Spirit is a real achievement in design in capturing the mood of the modern. It combines modern geometrics with watercolour paint effects and some plaids to give a slightly distressed effect – which all sounds difficult to describe in words but comes together beautifully in the carpet. The range is an 80/20 with British wool and comes in six designs, each of which has eight elegant colours. T+44 1562 745000 • www.bondworth.co.uk

F Ball Handy hybrid

F Ball is a clever company and a favourite with fitters as they have a habit of listening closely to their customer’s questions and innovating answers to make their lives easier. The latest idea is a Handy Pack of the high-performance Styccobond F49 adhesive – a 500g pack that mixes just enough material to fix around 30m of skirting, coving and capping without need to bring out a bucket.

In this pack, the base adhesive and its activator are next to each other in a sealed bag, divided by a clip. As soon as the clip is removed, the components can be mixed in a couple of minutes and then squeezed out of a corner ready for use with minimal wastage. F49 is a hybrid pressure sensitive adhesive that has proved highly popular for it’s high strength and grab and rapid curing and it is highly water resistant and will withstand normal wet cleaning techniques. Harrogate show report

Crown Floors Heaven sent

Crown Floors was the talk of The Flooring Show in Harrogate this September, choosing the occasion to debut its exciting Made in Heaven carpet collection to the market via a high-impact, competitively placed exhibition stand. For the first time the brand introduced its new developments alongside launches from sister brand Balta Carpets. An eye-catching angel creative dominated one side of the stand, drawing in retailers keen to find out more about Made in Heaven and the benefits of its 100% solution-dyed polyester yarn as well as those who wanted to explore Crown Floors’ increasingly diverse portfolio of great-value styles. “The feedback from retailers was fantastic,” says Gavin Freebairn, field sales manager, Crown Floors. “We were so excited to debut Made in Heaven. We’d identified a need for a carpet that could provide not only super-soft luxury but also be hard wearing and bleach cleanable, and that’s exactly what we’ve developed. Made in Heaven is made from eco-friendly polyester fibres with a two-ply twist, giving it fantastic bounce-back quality and long-lasting stain resistance.” Made in Heaven comes in two styles: Angelic and Aurora, both available in four- and five-metre widths and made from easy-clean, bleachcleanable 100% Made in Heaven PES yarn. The 2,000g/m2 pile weight of Angelic offers a rich and luxurious feel with a long 20-year stain and 15-year wear warranties. No less impressive, Aurora comes in an exquisitely soft 1,650g/m2 pile weight with 15-year stain and 10-year wear warranties. Both styles are available in a palette of 12 modern natural tones, the perfect way to bring heavenly comfort to the home and can be viewed on a dedicated website. Quickstep Lasts a lifetime

One of the major benefits of the Master Installer scheme is the provision of a manufacturer-backed warranty on all installation work and the Academy used the show to announce the extension of this warranty from two-years to lifetime. “While the benefits of the Master Installer scheme are numerous for installers, one of the biggest reasons for consumers to use a Master Installer is the guarantee of exacting installation standards and with it the workmanship warranty,” explains Lee Thompson, technical manager at the Academy. “With an extension to the lifetime of the installation, this longer warranty has become even more compelling and its introduction certainly struck a chord with installers and retailers at the show.” With Quick-Step’s water-resistant laminate technology a key focus of the stand, the Academy was also able to highlight the product innovation that goes into Quick-Step laminate, wood and vinyl flooring. The Academy’s course content makes sure that installers and retailers are kept abreast of these developments; given the knowledge and learning the skills needed to maximise the advantages they bring. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Lano Cashmere cachet

Retailers were treated to an industry first at The Flooring Show as Lano unveiled its breakthrough Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe collections to the trade at large. Both collections are made using Lano’s revolutionary new Halcyon fibre, which offers the stain resistance and low maintenance of polypropylene, but the sumptuous look and feel of nylon. “We have been looking forward to getting to Harrogate and introducing Halcyon to the wider trade,” says Gary Alp, Lano Carpets’ UK sales manager. “This new fibre raises the stakes as it bridges the gap to the look of nylon velvet with the value and stain-resistant performance of polypropylene. This means both our Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe collections offer the beautiful silk look that consumers are looking for, in conjunction with a wealth of practical advantages.” It has been an incredible year for Lano, involving the launch of several brand-new products, and the company’s stand was understandably one of the busiest at the show. Other attractions included another recent innovation, the fabulously indulgent Fairfield Heaven. A plush 65oz twist style made with super-soft Eccelena fibre that sits within Lano’s Touchdown Premium portfolio of stain- and faderesistant styles, Fairfield Heaven is aimed at homeowners who want luxurious carpet without a hefty price tag. Penthouse Competitive Colorado

Penthouse Carpets came to Harrogate to showcase Colorado, a mainstream product launch which introduces an 80/20 range of 18 plain colours that has been two years in development. “This range sets us apart from the competition,” says Jonathan Gamble of Penthouse. “An extensive collection of super plain twists in so many options is unusual in the market but there is a great demand for a reliable, high performance product in this sector.” Penthouse has worked closely with retailers and buyers to develop this mid-to-top end carpet in a range of stylish, subtle colours – selecting the final 18 from a candidate list of 40 colours that was originally sampled for prototyping. This 80/10/10 (Polypropylene and Polyester) is available in both 4m and 5m – it looks set to become a go-to plains range in the market. Penthouse’s sister brand for synthetic carpets Mayfield launched the soft, velvety Paradise range, a 51oz carpet made in 100% Halcyon PP fibre in 10 colours and two widths. Flair Designed to Dazzle

It was a busy but hugely successful three days for Flair Rugs at The Flooring Show in Harrogate, as the company showcased some exciting new additions to its AW range and consolidated its position as the go-to supplier of beautiful rugs for the home. With 12 innovative designs added to the Core Collection as well as fresh colourways launching in the Simplicity Collection, there was a real buzz around the Flair Rugs stand. Talking points included the new hand-carved 100 per cent wool Abstract range of quirky and unusual asymmetrical designs, and in particular the Collage Multi, a riot of bright blocks in different sizes reminiscent of 1950s artworks. While the Abstract range comes in a choice of popular sizes, the Collage Multi is also available in 60 x 230cm – ideally sized to make a striking focal point in a hallway. Also attracting retailers’ attention were the two latest additions to Flair Rugs’ great-value Dazzle range of gorgeously soft shagpile rugs for bedrooms and living rooms. Woven from silky thick and thin polyester yarn, with added lurex strands to give a touch of glamour, the Dazzle range has now been updated to include beautiful Blush Pink and Duck Egg colourways (joining Caramel, Silver, Charcoal and Natural), to reflect key interiors trends for 2018 and beyond. Carpetline and A&A Carpets Northern powerhouse

Carpetline brought A&A Carpets into their family to extend their reach into the North West and Wales for a successful business that is now the North’s largest independent flooring distributor. Backed now by the resources of Victoria plc, Carpetline is flying high. “We have a lot of momentum at the moment and investing in the development of the product portfolio,” says sales director Clive Beckett. Some of the investment can be seen clearly in professional new point-of sales displays, one of which is dedicated to their new MIDAS offer, an own-brand initiative. “This is a selection of wool twists and saxonies where retailers can deal with us direct as the manufacturer for a very competitive deal,” says A&A’s Craig Melling. Both businesses have brought forward new vinyl and luxury vinyl tile ranges to extend the scope of flooring opportunities for retailers. The LVT offering is great balance between quality and price, giving the retailer a fantastic profit opportunity. T 01429 892570 • www.carpetlinedirect.co.uk

Flower on Flooring Innovation is key for driving sales of vinyl flooring Embracing the opportunities available to them with enthusiasm and flair, vinyl flooring manufacturers are pushing the boundaries in creating new and exciting designs, with the efforts of leading producers included below.

Karndean Designflooring national sales manager Stella Coyle says home decorators are looking for easy fit, luxury vinyl flooring alternatives to avoid disruption, leading to her company’s innovative korlok collection becoming “a huge success” as it can cover uneven subfloors and also provide acoustic benefits.

“As well as offering our established gluedown and loose lay, korlok introduces a new rigid core category for our Uk wide independent retail network. Rigid core is the latest click-locking floating floor, which is an ideal alternative to laminate and engineered hardwood click floors as it offers the same benefits of realistic woodlook designs and hides subfloor imperfections, but with the durability and waterproof qualities of luxury vinyl,” she continues

“There’s the Danishinspired Baltic Washed Oak, with its light grey undertones, and Baltic Mistral Oak in korlok characterful Reclaimed Antique French Oak and the Scandinavian-inspired Warm Ash,Washed Grey and Texas White. For moody and impactful floors, there’s American Black Walnut and Smoked Butternut with a mix of straight and flowery grain patterns for opulence.

“Going room to room with the same colour floor throughout in multiple designs has also been an interesting trend this year. In response to the demand, we’ve added a new versatile grey Storm Oak design to our premium Art Select collection in a full length plank, parquet and basketweave.

“Basketweaves are certainly ‘back in’ and when paired with a Storm Oak by karndean Designflooring classic parquet or full length plank they can make a real impact,” Ms Coyle concludes.

J2 Flooring explains it is offering a totally unique LVT brand, which gives the retailer 100% exclusivity, designed to allow the retailer to ensure increased profit margin and reduced competition.

Going far beyond the traditional 'white box label' of supplying a product in an unbranded box, the company says it goes the extra mile and offers the retailer a fully rebranded display unit and sample swatches, an own label brochure and a dedicated website. J2 Flooring managing director Stephen Latham says: "This offer appeals to stockists and non stockists. The concept is aimed at retailers frustrated at

brands being sold online at near cost prices, sold through distribution available to every man and a van, cutting margin and increasing competition.

“Having your very own exclusive LVT range means you cut out competition and make more profit by promoting your brand and not somebody else’s," he concludes. Furlong Flooring Natural Solutions national sales manager Richard Richman says his company has added three luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) to its portfolio, beginning with Sirona, available in click and dryback, including a 0.3mm wear layer, a tough PU guard layer and featuring 20 wood and tile décors.

“The bar is raised by Carina featuring Natural Solutions LVT Sirona Evergreen 0.55mm wear layer Oak from Furlong Flooring and suitable for both domestic and commercial settings, comprised of more than 20 décors offering wood and tile designs, including four on-trend herringbone planks for consumers looking to make a statement,” he continues.

“Sharing the same robust product base,Aurora uses an embossed in-register construction technique to bring a truly authentic look and natural feel to the 12 wood décors that make up the range.

“These are supported by matching accessories, including three underlays, with adhesives, profiles and feature strips also available,” says Mr Richman.

Quick-Step international PR and sponsoring manager Sophie Hautekeete says:“There are few manufacturers invested in developing stand-out decors that reflect the latest trends, but this could be seen as a good marker of a brand’s commitment to making the very best LVT.

“Renowned for our focus on innovation and design excellence, our range of LVT is no exception. At the Flooring Show, we showcased the brand-new Marble Carrara White décor from our Ambient collection. “The incredibly realistic marble décor has been introduced as the luxury trend is hitting the mainstream in a big way.

“With Ambient Click Marble Carrara White, homeowners can create a high-stakes aesthetic that looks incredible in the home and with all the practical advantages of high-quality European made LVT, simple to fit thanks to Uniclic Multifit and with Stain Guard and Scratch Guard technologies,” Ms Hautekeete concludes.

Going public

The Carpet Foundation is set to resume its consumer promotional activity in 2017/2018. The 12 month programme comprises one-page advertorials in a series of leading home interest magazines.

The campaign will address key consumer issues such as carpet and health, underfloor heating and the benefits of buying from independent retailers. Magazines on the roster include Ideal Home, Your Home, Homes & Antiques and The English Home. The first advertorial, in the November issue, on sale now, is in Country Homes & Interiors, a title with a circulation of over 70,000 and focusses on the benefits of buying from Carpet Foundation members. This will be followed by a page in the December issue of Ideal Home, the UK’s biggest selling home interest magazine, which addresses carpet and asthma. Commenting on the schedule, CF chief executive Andrew Stanbridge, said: “With a solid and growing retail membership, together with the support of 19 Patron members, we now have the funds to return to consumer promotion.

ritain has always been a nation of shopkeepers. And we all know that diversity on the high street, with a good mix of independent retailers, makes for a more appealing shopping experience. We’re flooding back to butchers, bakers and specialist stores – often the lifeblood of our communities – and local artisans are flourishing. This applies to carpet retailers, too. We buy a new carpet every seven years on average, so need to turn to people we can trust. The Carpet Foundation has 450 independent retailers nationwide, most of which are small or family owned. Many have been selling carpet for generations, driven by pride in their work and a passion for their product. They offer quality carpets to suit all budgets and needs, and

help from knowledgeable people who will make sure you buy the carpet that is right for you. All Carpet Foundation retailers operate under a Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute. It guarantees a certain level of service – you won’t get any nasty surprises on the bill and, in the unlikely event of a problem, there is an agreed dispute resolution process. They are the only carpet retailers in Britain allowed to follow this Code of Practice and are monitored to ensure compliance. Shopping is one thing we do well in this country, but carpet is a complex and infrequent purchase, so choose a local carpet specialist for great service, genuine expertise and access to a wide range of quality carpets, perfect for a country home.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

from The Stocklists

www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 74

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 76

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 77

Flooring factsheet Luxury underfoot

from Interfloor

Demand for more luxurious flooring products suitable for use in all areas of the home was instrumental in leading manufacturer Interfloor’s decision to introduce its highest density PU underlay range. Interfloor Sales Director Gary Cowley said: “The trend for increasingly luxurious and comfortable interiors means that many of our retail customers are keen to add firmer PU products to their offer. Now with our new Premium High Density range they can.” The three products in the new Premium High Density (PHD) range are all 180kg/m³ and offer superior protection for carpets that is longer lasting and better performing as well having impressive “green” credentials.

New PHD Chromium 9mm, the standout PU underlay in the range, has high performance Textron backing to give it more dimensional stability and cleaner cutting during installation as well as exceptional ‘shock absorber’ properties to help give it a longer life.

PHD Titanium 8mm and PHD Palladium 10mm have a polyethylene with reinforcing scrim backing. This backing also helps increase dimensional stability, is resistant to tearing and is easy to cut and trim. The PHD underlays boast superior heat insulation properties and have high acoustic ratings to reduce noise. They are also made from 100 per cent recycled foam. “Consumers will love the high performance features of our new PHD underlays, while fitters can’t fail to be impressed with how easy it is to install. We are sure the range will be a top choice for all areas of the home,” added Gary. For further information, please visit www.interfloor.com
