Carpet&FlooringReview Zoffany zeal for style

Alternative Flooring’s new Boutique carpet collection for luxury hotels, retail and commercial spaces is designed in collaboration with Zoffany. This new collaboration launches Alternative Flooring Boutique, five-star luxury carpet for the hotel and retail markets. The designs are Dunand, Seizo, Clio, Serpentine and Crackle in a total of sixteen colourways, that take inspiration from Zoffany’s collections. Boutique celebrates craft and colour. ‘The Muse’ epitomises the decadent spirit of the 1920’s and combines modernist style with fine craftsmanship. The ‘Alchemy of Colour’ is a sumptuous palette of natural dyes, based on jewel-like shades from the Zoffany archive. Lorna Haigh, Creative and Marketing Director of Alternative Flooring comments, ‘This is the beginning of our exciting collaboration with the luxury fabric house Zoffany. For the first time, their inspirational design stories are translated into a different cloth, wall to wall carpet. This allows the interior designer to play with scale and texture using these design concepts in the luxury boutique and commercial markets.’

Peter Gomez, Head of the Zoffany studio comments: ‘We are delighted to be working with Alternative Flooring, who have interpreted five of our signature designs beautifully into carpets. With our Alchemy of Colour palette singing out through them, they will complement our fabrics, wallpapers and paints wonderfully.’ The designs are opulent in colour with patterns that capture elegance and prestige. Brighton beautiful

Following an extensive restoration project, the stately Saloon of Brighton’s reknown Royal Pavillion has now reopened to the public - a room of rich history and aesthetic prowess.

Working closely with Decorative Artist Anne Sowden and members of the Royal Pavilion & Museums Foundation, Axminster Carpets were tasked with recreating the original 1822 carpet – a highly elaborate and energetic design featuring 20 dragons, 100 sun rays and 274 lotus leaves. Sowden crafted an intricate, line-drawn and painted pattern which Axminster translated to support the weaving process. The history of the Pavilion is inextricably bound to Axminster Carpets. The original carpet was manufactured by Thomas Whitty and it was vital to the Pavilion members that the replica was made at the home of its original birthplace. Gary Bridge, Design Director at Axminster Carpets, quotes “The Saloon is unlike any other project Axminster Carpets has had the privilege of working on. In order to master and perfect the authenticity of the design it was essential to adopt the style and idiosyncrasies of Robert Jones – original designer – and embrace a new style of artistry with Anne’s delicate treatment.” From the luxurious silk drapery to the hand-stencilled walls, and platinum leaf beading, every aspect of the interior has been carefully researched and considered to align with a uniform colour scheme and motif. The finished carpet – a gorgeous, kaleidoscopic vision of oriental colour and print - completes the space. “The resulting design is a triumph – beautiful, vibrant and historically informed,” said David Beevers, Keeper of the Royal Pavilion With a Royal Warrant and heritage of 250 years’ experience, Axminster Carpets can be found in prestigious locations worldwide. NEWS Runway success

Luxury vinyl tiles from the Expona Bevel Line Collection were used as part of a brand new departures area which was recently unveiled at Cardiff Airport.

The £4m project, which was completed in partnership with Cardiff interior design practice Powell, includes a brand new, spacious extension to the departures area which overlooks the airfield; a new Costa Coffee; an extended and relocated WH Smith store and the 51° Executive Lounge and Business Lounge, which features Expona Bevel Line in the Portland Stone and Light Oak designs. The light, clean, contemporary design of the Portland Stone tiles complements the classic Light Oak planks, defining seating areas and walkways, and creating a calming, stylish environment perfectly suited for the soon to be bustling departure area. Versatile, both designs work well alongside the lounge’s slate grey colour, a decision inspired by the famous Welsh slate heritage. Gareth Knight, Operations Director from Powell commented, ‘With the addition of Expona Bevel Line, the newly extended departure area is now light and airy, significantly transforming the experience for customers with welcoming surroundings.’ With a heavy commercial use area classification, Expona Bevel Line features a 0.55mm wear layer with a polyurethane surface treatment to assist on-going maintenance and is suitable for the high traffic environment of a busy airport. Bevel Line achieves the highest possible BRE Global A + rating (ENP 429) for high traffic areas such as retail and commercial environments and is 100% recyclable. The Expona Bevel Line Collection offers a choice of 9 contemporary stone and 18 commercially attractive timer effects that beautifully replicate natural flooring materials, designed for use in heavy commercial areas. The Bevel Line Collection has bevelled edges on all four sides of the planks and tiles, designed with authenticity in mind to feature all the intricate details and unique characteristics you wood expect in natural wood or stone flooring. Skyline challenge

A challenging refurbishment of the Centrepoint Building in Tralee, Ireland, which will now serve as a HSE Primary Care Centre, was tackled with the help of products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. F. Ball’s Stopgap P131 general purpose primer and Stopgap Red Bag levelling compound were used by contractors for the 4000m2 floor refurbishment. Dominating Tralee’s skyline, the six-storey property was built in 2008 but has remained largely unoccupied ever since. While this presented contractor Brendan O’Brien of BOBF with some advantages, such as minimum moisture levels (no waterproof surface membrane was required as the existing concrete base had fully cured over the years), it also posed challenges. With an out of service elevator, transporting 40 pallets of levelling compound up several flights of stairs proved both physically strenuous and time consuming, therefore the decision was made to remove the windows and winch up the pallets from the street below. The concrete subfloor of the building was primed using Stopgap P131, a general-purpose primer for absorbent subfloors. Priming prevents unacceptably fast drying of adhesives and levelling compounds on all absorbent surfaces, which can weaken the levelling compound and lead to floor failure. It also helps to promote the adhesion of the levelling compound to a screed or waterproof surface membrane. With a quick turnaround required for the job, the pump-specialising contractors needed a levelling compound which, in their own words, “had a quick curing time, could be pump-applied, and had high compressive strength.” Ticking every box was F. Ball’s Stopgap Red Bag levelling compound: a water mix self-smoothing underlayment suitable for absorbent subfloors. T 01538 361633 www.f-ball.co.uk

Showcase showroom

Products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd., have been used to deliver a smooth floor finish as part of a refurbishment at Peter Newman Flooring in Poole, Dorset to create a new company showroom and warehouse.

A wide range of F. Ball products was used for the floor refurbishment including Stopgap P141 primer, Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound, Stopgap 850 Exterior, and Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS adhesive. The property dates back to the 1960s, and incorporates a 90m2 showroom, a 200m2 inner stockroom, and a 250m2 main warehouse. All areas had a layer of paint on the subfloor’s surface, so the first point of action was to remove the paint with a grinder. Commenting on the project, Company director Merrick Smith said: “F. Ball is the main brand of product we use day-in day-out, and for good reason! We’ve always used them since our company began back in 1980, as the products are reliable and technical back-up is always sound. “Stopgap 1200 Pro is a go-to product every time, along with Stopgap 300 HD, Styccobond F44, Styccobond F3 and Styccobond F49. We were very fortunate to have the local F. Ball technical representative, Steve Sinclair, visit the site and help survey which products would be most appropriate to give the best finish possible.” T 01538 361 633

Marketing insights Flooring Trends: styled for comfort New textures, striking patterns, glorious geometrics, refreshed stripes and softness underfoot are the key trends for 2019. Ulster Carpets have created exquisite textured effects in terræn, a stylish new Danish-inspired cut and loop collection. The six designs are inspired by surfaces found in both urban and rural settings, from concrete castings to forest floors – this range is all about creating pattern with texture, in four muted hues, Grå, Krem, Kaffe and Granit. The three urban textures – Berg, Lenke and Ryg – explore designs from sources as varied as angled shadows and light from urban architecture, sculpted concrete surfaces, and the more familiar hounds tooth design from furnishing and fashion. All six designs within terræn resonate with the places we live in and our surrounding environment. Constructed using 80% wool 20% nylon pile yarn in premium British and New Zealand wool, terræn is available in 4m, 3m, 2m and 1m colour matching multi widths and is suitable for general residential wear. With its years of experience working with natural fibres, Crucial Trading has an innate understanding of how to balance the ingredients and fibres to create beautiful new blends and designs. The award-winning new floor covering Sisool Rock blends the fibre from the Sisal plant, known for its strength and resilience, with the comfort and softness of wool. The design has a distinctive, large, open weave created by the thickness of the wool yarns which are then blended and secured with the sisal. Made from 75% Sisal and combined with 25% wool to add softness underfoot, it comes in four beautiful, blended colourways from pale to mid and darker tones of the grey palette. Sisool Rock won an award in the Naturals category at the 2018 National Flooring Innovation Awards in September. Available in 4 metre width, the hardwearing nature of sisal makes it suitable for higher traffic areas of the home such as the hallway and stairs whilst the softness of wool increases its versatility for other rooms of the house.

The ‘Alchemy of Colour’ is a sumptuous palette of natural dyes, based on jewel-like shades. This is the first time that Zoffany’s signature design stories have been translated into a different cloth, printed tufted wall-to-wall carpet. These design concepts play with scale and texture and are prefect for both the luxury residential and boutique markets.

“Alternative Flooring’s new Boutique collection is designed in collaboration with famous fabric house Zoffany, bringing five-star luxury carpet to interiors.” Grey is a great companion to other neutrals, but also has the power to balance out bold accent colours. Brintons were inspired by layering this most versatile of shades when they designed their new Perpetual Textures series. The carpets were influenced by the beauty of chenille, corded and tweed fabrics and inspired by rattan and handwoven techniques to offer an exciting alternative to a plain. Applying tonal palettes and combining materials or textures is a design element that is being used to give interest to spaces while creating a luxurious feel. Colour can easily be added with an eye catching bright on the wall and a few coordinating or tonal accessories in the season’s key shades help

It is available in a 4m width and has a guide retail price of £59.99 making it a compelling and competitive proposition for your customers.

One of Avenue Floors most popular collections, Bubblegum & Liquorice has matured, with some of the more outlandish looks replaced by intelligent and sophisticated approaches to tile and geometric design. Of course, the everpopular rainbow stripe remains, but these new designs prove the collection is one for the style conscious. Duck egg blue dominates the introductions with Sagres and Dots representing colour updates to existing designs. New for 2018, the exotic Magali and Shalimar also feature the shade, the latter harking back to tiles of grand Parisian residences. continued overleaf...

“One of Avenue Floors most popular collections, Bubblegum & Liquorice has matured, with some of the more outlandish looks replaced by intelligent and sophisticated approaches...” Elsewhere the strong black/white theme remains, the new Siena a twist on the resurgent diamond pattern found in York. As part of Avenue’s Choice collection of great value cushion flooring in 2m and 3m widths, Bubblegum & Liquorice comes with a seven-year wear warranty and features a specially developed Thermoback foam backing for better underfoot comfort and warmth. Updates to the Avenue Floors display unit will be rolling out to retailers in Spring 2019.

Adam Carpets three new stripe ranges are sure to fascinate and engage the consumer and make a home more enjoyable. Pinstripe is inspired by city life and tailoring, this stripe is set apart from the rest because of its creative combination of twist and velvet yarn that is tailored to give a smart, clean, sharp defined stripe. The 6 colourways are fashionable but timeless. Lipstick red and aqua is to become a new modern classic which is fresh and fun loving.

The Cormar Carpet Company has responded to the markets love for softness underfoot at an affordable price by launching Apollo Comfort, and at the same time has added nine new colours to their Home Counties Plains range for those who value a wool rich carpet. Apollo Comfort, is made with a new, softer Excellon polypropylene fibre that brings a premium feel to an affordably priced range. With a palette of 12 strong shades, featuring tonal grey and beige hues, it is bleach cleanable and dirt resistant and includes a 10-year stain and wear guarantee. “We have seen huge growth in demand for soft, silky, deep pile carpets and they have fast become a firm favourite with homeowners,” said David Cormack, Marketing Director at Cormar. At the same time, our Home Counties Plains has been a great seller for our retailers for over four years. This relaunch sees an influx of more greys and stoney shades which are at the heart of this collection,” he explains. The Home Counties Plains range has nine new colours, including Harbour Stone and Quartz – increasing the total offering to a choice of 18 fashionable home furnishing shades. Made from 80% pure New Zealand wool, 10% tuftbond and 10% polypropylene, Home Counties Plains is a premier quality tenth gauge carpet in two pile weights (42oz and 50oz), making it ideal for high traffic areas such as stairways and hallways.

Adam Carpets: Pinstripe,Trinity - Panache, Boutique - Deckchair, Lulworth Cove

“The stripes are made in Kidderminster using premium UK wool, the combination of velvet and twist yarns are used to create subtle textural effects...” Some of the 'louder' colourations in Deckchair are inspired by the trend 'Maximalism', a reaction against austerity. Maximalism means more vivid colour, mix of texture and more fun. Silver Sands and Lulworth Cove are both colourways of calm. Blues from the coast still inspire and grey is here to stay. Panache’s broken design effect allows the colours to 'blend' and become a harmony of colour. It’s a carpet that can be a subtle backdrop as well as make a statement in any room. Available in a mixture of colourways from bold vibrant hues to calming combinations of new neutrals such as russet, ochre, caramel and cream. The Chateau colourway is a nod to retro avocado, this time it’s mixed with other 1970's colours with a more delicate touch. The stripes are made in Kidderminster using premium UK wool, the combination of velvet and twist yarns are used to create subtle textural effects, which are suitable for all areas of the home, including stairs. 32 November 2018

All Cormar’s stain resistant polypropylene carpets, wool twists, wool loop carpets are produced on site at its Lancashire mills and distributed in the UK and Eire via its own delivery fleet.

Kenko from Granorte Kenko, the latest wonder-flooring from Granorte, has now added to its list of awards, winning Gold in the inaugural Flooring Innovation Awards, revealed at this year’s Flooring Show. Voted by a panel of independent judges and up against stiff competition with over 100 entries received, Kenko scooped Gold in the smooth flooring category. As a completely PVC- and plasticiserfree alternative to LVT with the added acoustic, comfort and thermal benefits of cork, it’s easy to see why. Kenko uses a 0.25mm thick polymer wear-layer developed in Japan that relies on electron beam hardening to provide a stain-resistant, abrasion-resistant and easy to maintain surface free of PVC or plasticisers. With this polymer surface married to a high-definition dĂŠcor layer, 1.75mm thick cork cushion layer, Uniclic HDF core and 1mm cork backing; Kenko is fast to install, comfortable, warm, quiet, durable and easy to look after. It’s also resistant to impact and fading, inhibits bacteria growth and offers chemical resistance. “We’re absolutely delighted to have won Gold in the Flooring Innovation Awards,â€? comments Paulo Rocha, product and R&D manager, Granorte. “We’re super proud of Kenko and it’s a floor with technology that we believe very strongly in. With so much focus on over-use of plastics and the damage they are having on our oceans and lands getting more and more concerning with each passing month; anything we can do to help, even in just a small way, must be seen as a positive and worthwhile action. The beauty of Kenko is that despite eliminating PVC and plasticisers, it really doesn’t have any practical drawbacks, making it even more appealing to consumers or specifiers looking for high-quality, low-maintenance flooring. We’re glad the judges shared our passion for this really great flooring product.â€? Kenko is available in six wood effects, ranging from pale Ivort through natural tones of Amber and Satin to the grey of Ashland, Kenko is suitable for Class 23 domestic or Class 34 use, promising long-life in busy home and commercial environments. Featuring Microban anti-bacterial treatment, the floor is now available to order. T01785 711131 www.granorte.co.uk

Bendy Bull Stair Nosing from Stairrods The judges found Stairrods an attractive choice as an Innovation Gold winner as the company thrives on ideas that advance the professionalism of flooring installations. The first bend-on-site stair nosing is revolutionising the way the industry deals with curved steps in LVT installations. And it offers lots of flexibility with profiles 2.5mm, 3mm, 4mm and 5mm with 10 finishes from brass to black including polished nickel, chrome and brushed chrome. “This makes even a small installation look stunning and enthusiasm for the product continues to grow and build momentum, both in the UK and increasingly in export markets – we have someone out in the US right now getting a lot of interest from installers,” says John Raine of Stairrods. Every year brings smart new innovations from the Consett-based company and this year’s presentation at the Flooring Show, Harrogate, demonstrated several of their New exciting profiles for the future. The Slim D offers a discreet and sleek finish for carpet to carpet, while the Premier Inlay beautifully transforms the borders of LVT installations. Following on from the success the DoubleZ and Singles we are now bringing out DoubleZ 13 and Single 13 for that thicker carpet. T 01207 591176 www.stairrods.co.uk

HarrogateReview 16-18 SEPTEMBER 2018 • HARROGATE

Generating more value from competitive sales The Flooring Show is a showcase of the latest trends that are driving better business in the industry as manufacturers and suppliers seek to generate more value for consumers in a market everybody agrees is challenging. So, to some extent, there was a visible move upmarket in many areas with the trade trying to give consumers more reasons to invest in better flooring products. For carpets, there is a strong sense of going beyond polypropylene both in natural fibre and in more polyester and nylon on the man-made side of the business. The wool houses talk optimistically about a resurgence in demand across their product ranges. Some great examples of the show were Cavalier’s launch of Icon, an impressive 3-ply twist; Victoria’s Burford and Thomas Witter’s Casablanca – and some classy offers from Hugh Mackay. Abingdon Flooring, while they were enjoying the hugely popular relaunch of their polypropylene Stainfree Twist, were also strongly promoting new wool offers under their Wilton Royal brand.

Harrogate boost for better business In the man-made sector, Cormar came into the market with its first polyester Gemini and Cavalier showed off their sensational Silken to add to a host of polyester range launches by manufacturers in 2018. Westex, better known for the uncompromising quality of their wool ranges, were showing off their Silken Velvet collection in polyamide. Small pattern styles are growing in popularity among those consumers who want to move away from plain but are a little too cautious to choose strong designs and there were excellent examples at the show from Cavalier, Adam and Hugh Mackay. Ulster’s new textural terraen collection and Brinton’s Perpetual Textures also attracted a lot of attention. The continued growth of LVT's share of the market is evident everywhere with lots of investment and innovation to keep consumers’ interest alive. Karndean’s portfolio continues to impress while relative newcomers like Distinctive Flooring and Furlong’s Natural Solutions have considerably extended their offer to the market – even carpet company Westex does not want to be left behind and has launched its first LVT range! And there is some great innovation in the LVT sector such as Pro-Tek’s waterproof WPC, Carpetline’s super stable limestone core products, and Wineo’s organic Purline range. Technology to virtualise the installation of flooring products – using digital technology to show sampling in real rooms on your smart phone or iPad is starting to gain traction and exciting innovations lie ahead. Read some of the detail behind all these trends in our Harrogate review in this month's issue of the magazine and also in the October feature, available online at www.thestocklists.com

42 November 2018

The latest data from the show organisers shows a positive shift in the Harrogate audience and an encouraging trend in the quality of visitors. “Exhibitor comments about quality buyers and doing significantly more business, is backed up by our data, which shows that 80% of our visitors this year were owners, managing directors and directors – up from 60% in comparison with 2017, and 86% of our visitors having purchasing responsibility, up from 68% last year,” says event manager Kane Thomas (pictured above). The show also welcomed visitors from some new countries this year including Russia, Sweden, Iraq, Japan, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Guernsey and Ghana. Overall 10% of the show’s visitors are from abroad, with 40% from the Midlands and South and 50% from Yorkshire and the North. The total number of show visitors came in at 3009 (3096 in 2017), including 5% more visitors travelling from the South. Nearly 40% of this year’s visitors only attend The Flooring Show in the all-year industry event calendar.

Adam Carpets

All things bright

Harrogate is a lovely spa resort where you can rent deckchairs in the Valley Gardens in the summer or buy them in the autumn from Adam Carpets in the town’s exhibition halls! Amid a sea of beige and grey, Adam excels in bringing more colour into our lives whether it is the beautiful palette of Fine Worcester Twist, the classy tones of their partnership with the Little Greene Paint Company and, now, the exuberant colours of their latest stripes collection. With three different styles, the brightest of the bunch in this collection is Deckchair, a candy coloured concoction of twist and velvet, and if lecterns aren’t your thing, Adam are indeed selling deckchairs in this carpet fabric as attention-grabbing point-of-sale displays to great effect – dozens were sold at the show to savvy retailers. The second option in this collection is Pinstripe, again deploying this clever twist/velvet approach than in a rather more formal style, and finally there is Panache which has proved to be the most popular design of the three and is genuinely unique and distinctive. With six colours in each of these ranges including some exciting caramels, blues and fashionable burnt honey, the stripes collection scored highly as the Flooring Show’s most eye-catching launch of the year. “The appearance of this new collection may be a little unexpected but we’re delighted it’s been so well received by so many retailers from day one,” says Chris Adam, managing director. “When we asked our customers what their consumers wanted next in stripes, we listened carefully to their answers about being braver where colour is concerned. We want Adam to be a distinctive design brand for people looking for something different.” The stripes collection is made in the Adam factory in Kidderminster and is an 80/20 British wool with nylon construction so it has all the credentials to perform and sell strongly – boosted by a new lectern presentation that shows it off in style, especially if you team it up with one of those bright, stripey deckchairs! Harrogate show report

Himalaya Carpets Curating wool collections

Himalaya Carpets are a relatively new company in the sector but are quickly establishing themselves as a quality brand for wool among the U.K.'s more discerning independent retailers. Robbie Thomson is the curator of two collections comprising 12 ranges. "We are all about wool and only about wool and we have been careful to cultivate a strong relationship directly with independents who are looking for a little more character in their carpets," he said. “Sophisticated consumers are increasingly getting the message that it is cool to buy wool and retailers are realising that quality at this end of the market is not so price sensitive and there is a growing amount of business to be had,” said Robbie. The Himalaya offer in predominantly naturals and new greys includes some dyed and undyed plains and stripe, and chunky loop piles including the latest robust 4-ply loop Athena. Stripes are showing some resurgence says the company but adds that it's all about having something that the others aren't offering and Himalaya is ready with distinctive designs with strong consumer appeal. SEBO Efficient innovation

SEBO were proud to showcase their advanced X7 PET vacuum cleaner with its newly acquired Flooring Innovation Award – recognition of the work that has gone into developing this market leading product. The X7 range is regularly recommended by many of the flooring manufacturers themselves as the go-to cleaner to maintain carpets in the optimum condition and the machine is full of performance features including a boost button, odour control filter, turbo brush, stairs hose and automatic adjustment for different floor types. The latest innovation came about through the re-engineering required to meet European standards on energy rating last year when SEBO redesigned the cleaner so that it maintained the same performance from a smaller (and pleasantly quieter) 900W motor. The company operates an efficient sales scheme which is popular with retailers whereby they buy a demonstration unit and then SEBO fulfils the orders from central stocks direct to consumers on the retailer's behalf. Distinctive Flooring

Brand new style Distinctive Flooring, part of the Victoria Plc., had a particularly exciting year at The Flooring Show 2018 as they unveiled their new branding and new product ranges ahead of the 2019 launch.

“We truly believe that we have the right products – from colour and design through to quality – at competitive prices, and we’re so excited to see what the future has in store for our company and our customers.”

The team, including several new faces in both sales and marketing, were on hand throughout the show helping current and potential new customers find the perfect flooring solutions for their customers and upcoming commercial projects. As a young company, Distinctive Flooring has been in operation since 2010, offering both carpet tiles and luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), but at the show the company revealed an expanded range of brandnew LVT colours, a refreshed carpet tile range, their modern and eclectic ‘Tapestry’ LVT, new ceramics and more. F Ball Sticking to the system

F. Ball used this year’s Flooring Show to showcase its ‘System LVT’ range of products – designed to deliver the perfect flooring finish for luxury vinyl tile installations, which continue to grow in popularity. The System LVT range comprises Stopgap 300 HD floor levelling compound, Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive, Stopgap P131 general-purpose primer, and the newly introduced Stopgap P141 primer for non-absorbent surfaces. F. Ball also took the opportunity to highlight the benefits of its recently reformulated, market-leading, rapid-curing, flexible tube adhesive, Stycco Flex, which boasts improved application properties and is now approved for installing PVC flooring accessories, including skirting, capping and coving. Stycco Flex is known for its ability to bond almost any absorbent or non-absorbent material found in the flooring and construction industries. The high strength build-up and fast curing time of Stycco Flex means it can secure stair nosings and trims, in as little as 60 minutes, without the need for mechanical fixings. It can also be used to bond two impervious surfaces. “The show was a great platform to present our system solutions for specific flooring installations and other innovative products we have developed to help flooring contractors complete their jobs quickly, efficiently and to the highest standards, and we have received terrific feedback,” said sales director David Hibbert. Floorswitch The future of flooring samples

40% of people are put off making a flooring purchase because they cannot imagine what it would look like in their own home. That's the research that is driving Floorswich to develop their phone app to visualise flooring samples in consumers’ own rooms. Flooring visualisation has been something of a holy grail for marketeers and the “augmented reality” (AR) technology to deliver it is only now being developed to a state that can be relied upon to give consumers a good user experience. “AR technology is going to be mainstream and become an expectation amongst floor buyers in a way that is already happening in some other sectors,” says Andrew Mitchell of Floorswitch. The prize of succeeding with this technology is to increase profits by giving consumers more confidence in selecting higher value flooring products once they have seen it represented in their own homes. At the same time, the approach can reduce sampling costs. Floorswitch used the Harrogate event as a showcase to present the technology to both flooring manufacturers and to retailers in an app that is capable of both measuring and estimating in the customer’s own home as well as presenting the selected flooring within a real-time moving image of the consumers actual room using their smartphone camera with augmented reality. MasterWeaver

The art of carpet If you thought the true art of carpet making was a thing of the past, then look no further than MasterWeaver, based in Kidderminster. They are one of the companies at the forefront of this industry in the UK in terms of technology, quality and creativity. Retailers know the company as one of the country’s biggest suppliers of high quality woven wool-rich carpets and at the Flooring Show, visitors could see six axminster ranges and eight wiltons across a range of 116 colours – all fully stocked in the UK. Quite a line-up! But that is the tip of an impressive iceberg. MasterWeaver is a market leader in major custom contracts including high-end hotels, casinos and mosques across Europe and the Middle East. Managed and designed in Kidderminster and manufactured in partnership with Crossley Axminster in South Africa on six state-of-the-art electronic jacquard looms, Master Weaver undertake 6 to 8 projects on this scale every month. “Everything you can imagine, we can put on to a carpet. And we have a lot of imagination!” says Slavko Radisa of MasterWeaver. “This is something we love, the creation of beautiful carpet on a grand scale. It is inspiring and I am so proud that we have established an international reputation for our achievements in this sector.” But pictures speak louder than words… T 01562 754382 • www.masterweaver.co.uk

SMG Group Pure and simple

SMG want their members to have the best possible chance of competing in today's competitive marketplace pure and simple – well, especially “pure”! “Pure” is the own-label initiative which is set to transform the approach of many flooring retailers as they seek greater protection from margin erosion by internet and price comparison sellers. “Pure Carpets” is now rolling with a smart and distinctive suite of point-of-sale presentations and the group has just launched “Pure Flooring” with its first range of click and dry-back LVT. SMG plan to rollout the “Pure brand” into other categories in due course, which can only help SMG members diversify into other business opportunities if they so wish. “This is of course optional for our membership, as we will continue to promote our suppliers’ brands,” says Linda Thomas of SMG. “It is just another opportunity for our members to gain an edge over their competitors.”

SMG’s Linda Thomas is pictured with Head of Group Operations Mike Reid (left) and chairman Chris Moffatt.

In addition to commercial protection, the approach gives a more coherent appearance to the retailer’s showroom and SMG can also offer a service to de-brand collections from other suppliers to fit in with the programme.

SMG, which with 384 member outlets and over 65 approved suppliers at present is the largest and most established of the flooring industry buying groups, and they continue to lead the way. T 01189 32 3832 • www.smg-group.co.uk

Hugh Mackay Quintessential quality

The best carpet that Hugh Mackay has made in 40 years is a bold statement from a company committed to uncompromising quality but such is the confidence in Quintessential Twist that it was unveiled at Harrogate and will be launched in the New Year. “We set out to make the very best carpet that could be made – driven by nothing but quality, and certainly not price,” said MD Vince Holden. “This has been a year in the making but the production values are fantastic and we have had a fabulous reaction at the show.”

Quintessential Twist is an 80/20 wool carpet weighing in at 57 ounces and in 18 colours and its 3-ply construction will give it exceptional wearability and appearance retention. “This will be the premium brand for Hugh Mackay,” says Vince, “and our biggest launch since Durham Twist.” Also attracting attention on the Hugh Mackay stand was the new Durham Edition, an 80/20 twist and velvet two-colour yarn creating a fashionably subtle pattern and there was the debut of Durham Velvet with a clean finish that is a standard setter in the Velvet sector, which has been launched in 16 shades. WoolSafe Have you been framed? If you haven't been framed by WoolSafe you are missing a trick.

There is not much that WoolSafe doesn't know about treating stains effectively on wool carpets and that knowledge can be highly valuable to every retailer in providing reassurance to customers – especially if they are investing in higher value ranges. The WoolSafe Stain Wizard is a clever bit of web programming that takes wool carpet owners through every step of a successful stain treatment – but the best bit is that this gizmo can easily be embedded in your own website, making you look like the smartest expert in the business! The technology referred to is an I-frame – essentially a coded webpage hosted within your own website – looking and feeling like yours – but programmed, maintained and updated by WoolSafe. “This service is free to all retailers and it really takes the pressure away to know that your website has the very greatest depth of knowledge and up-to-date information to care for wool carpets,” says Agnes Zsednai, MD of WoolSafe. In addition to the step-by-step stain wizard guide, the system also links to approved cleaning products and WoolSafe Academy-trained carpet cleaners in the region where the retailer is based. Metro Group Marketing mission

Leading buying group Metro is on a mission to ensure that its members realise their full potential through a highly professional approach to marketing which enhances the independence of retailers. "Our bespoke marketing service to our members is Metro’s real USP," says Steve Depport, Metro’s operations manager. “This program can make a real difference to the success of the business and I'm pleased that we have had such a strong uptake for the service.” Metro already offers a substantial own label merchandising approach but the marketing service goes a lot further – offering members the opportunity to revamp the appearance of their store with style and sophistication, using a dedicated design agency that understands the flooring sector. Members get access to a £500 budget which they can use and add to to restyle their branding, improve their external appearance and signage and upgrade their in-store environment. Metro is a non-profit making organisation, funded by its members subscriptions. "This is a great way to get the greatest value out of a buying group membership and we encourage new members to take it up as soon as possible so that they can get the maximum return on investing in their business," says Steve. Brockway Carpets New Dimensions

Brockway is keen to take retailers into new dimensions of design, colour and increased sales opportunities by building on the success of an established winner. The Dimensions range was launched in 2014 with a cleverly coordinated range of plains, heathers and stripes to become one of Brockway’s most popular offers. So now the company is keen to enhance its appeal and has invested in impressive extensions to the range. Adding to the established range are six new plain colours and seven new heathers, to make a total of 24 in each style. With two weights available at 40 and 50oz, that provides a lot of options. But not enough! Brockway has now launched a 60oz Dimensions Opulence in both plains and heathers in 10 each of the best-selling colours. And then there’s a new line in the stripes of course. Not just eight new coordinating heathered designs but exciting options in new plains including wider stripes. “Everybody is loving what we have done with Dimensions,’ says Shaun Lewis of Brockway. “We have developed a complete collection of well-thought-out options that define Dimensions as the go-to choice for fashionable, top quality wool carpet.” T 01562 828200 • www.brockway.co.uk

Penthouse Carpets Wool with confidence

“There is a real resurgence in the interest in wool carpet and that is starting to show strongly across the market,” says Jonathan Gamble of Penthouse. “Retailers have got their confidence back and manufacturers like us are working hard to give the trade exactly what they want to sell - good quality wool.” Penthouse is a popular choice with independent retailers who respect the company’s employee ownership structure and the family feel to a business that has itself remained independent during the industry’s recent consolidations. True to their pedigree, Penthouse came to Harrogate with some super new wool offers including their latest 80/20 cut pile berber called Crofter. Available in nine colours, two weights, 40oz and 50oz, and two widths, 4m and 5m, Crofter is a distinctively well finished range which is double-sheared. “This is one of the best carpets we have ever done,” says Jonathan. Wineo Perfect Purline

Wineo is building an important presence in the UK market with a strong offer across laminates, LVT and organic hard flooring and in this, their second year at Harrogate, the company was presenting an impressive product portfolio. For us, the standout performer has to be Wineo’s organic flooring range Purline Wineo 1500 which has a remarkable and distinctive sales story that makes it difficult to resist. The design and appearance of Purline is exemplary, but it's exceptional environmental and performance credentials really set it apart. This is LVT with no vinyl – no PVC, plasticisers or solvents. It’s made from ecuran, a high-performance polyurethane material that is manufactured primarily from plant-based oils such as canola oil or castor oil and naturallyoccurring mineral components such as chalk. “You only need to tell people the story of how this product is made and how it performs and they are hooked - there just is nothing else quite like it,” says Irwo de Lange of Wineo. And to add to the qualifications, a live flame test on their stand at Harrogate demonstrated its fire retardancy. All that and a range of 185 options covering dry back, click and multilayer HDF board means that Purline is a force to be reckoned with in the smooth flooring market. The Accounting Package does all the financial legwork involved in sales and purchase ledgers, including seamless VAT reporting ensuring compliance of the Government’s forthcoming digital tax initiative, MTD (Making Tax Digital).

With eight years of continuous development under their belt, Computers for Flooring has ensured their system keeps up with the ever changing business landscape and needs of their flooring customers, creating opportunities for retailers to succeed in a changing world.

“We work in close partnership with independent retailers to bring them all the benefits of our industry experience inside a technology package that is definitely designed to make their lives easier,” says Mike Hammond. “We could talk all day about the clever features in the system but the best comment we got at the show was a retailer who simply said – ‘we make more money because of you!” T 0845 869 8403 • www.computersforflooring.com

Abingdon Flooring Multi-fibre finesse

Picking up a Flooring Innovation Award for the pioneering StainFree Twist collection wasn’t the only highlight for Abingdon Flooring at this year’s Flooring Show, with the British manufacturer showing off a number of key developments in the halls of the Harrogate Convention Centre. The original easy-clean carpet, StainFree, was presented in its fourth generation with Abingdon showing StainFree Twist and StainFree Ultra ranges in a finer 1/10th gauge velvet using an improved, softer polypropylene yarn. With an updated colourbank and a new fitter-friendly fleece backing, these multi-width (2.5, 4 and 5m) styles still benefit from the StainFree for Life promise against all food and drink spillages. In 20 on-trend colours, Twist and Ultra are now even more obtainable thanks to a more competitive price-point. Also previewing a brand-new colour palette for StainFree Tweed in the same, finer 1/10th gauge, along with updated colours for StainFree Arena Plus, Abingdon Flooring reasserted the brand as the UK’s most popular stain-resistant carpet collection. For its Wilton Royal collection of luxurious woven British wool carpets, Abingdon unveiled the brand-new Royal Charter and Balmoral ranges. Demonstrating that the need to make carpets softer and finer than ever before is just as relevant for natural fibres, these new styles deliver comfort and resilience at their best. Using Meltbond for a finer velvet finish and in a modern palette, Royal Charter and Balmoral are available in 40oz and 50oz qualities with multiple widths (2.5, 4 and 5m). Martin Peace, sales director, comments on the show: “We had an exceptional Harrogate this year and the responses we received to the softer feel of our updated StainFree and new Wilton Royal styles was really satisfying. It just goes to show, whether polypropylene or wool, soft velvet finishes are certainly in high demand and we’re expecting these products to enjoy a really strong response when they hit stores later this autumn.” T 01274 655662 www.abingdonflooring.co.uk

Cybergold has become the supplier of choice for many independent retailers for its range of non-slip products to hold rugs in place on both hard floors and carpets and the company continues to develop its range to meet evolving needs. Superlux is the company's own development to solve rug slippage on hard floors and is based on a clever two-tier bonded composite material which sticks to the rug on one side but has a novel no-tack felt-like surface on its reverse which is totally non-slip and leaves no residue on the smooth surface (pictured with Cybergold’s Nick Burger). Also at the show, Cybergold launched two new pack sizes of their flagship Rug Control underlay – at 60x230cm and 170x240cm. Cormar Carpet Co Soft luxury to last

Cormar’s commitment to product development has already seen five new launches this year, the latest of which made its debut at Harrogate to great acclaim as the company's first polyester product – Gemini. “We have seen polyester gaining popularity in the UK,” said David Cormack (pictured right). “Polyester gives great performance in soft, deep pile carpets and we have created a range with great credentials for lasting luxury.” Gemini is manufactured from premium Dura polyester which is licensed exclusively to Cormar in the UK and with a fine 10th gauge finish and a colour bank mixed from established bestsellers and the latest fashion shades, the range looks set for success. Polyester has the soft feel of polypropylene but more memory to bounce back – closer to the performance of nylon but without the extra price tag. This year Cormar also took an additional stand at Harrogate to demonstrate the capability of its customer portal which has become enormously popular – about 40% of all Cormar’s orders are now taken online. “Our presentation of the portal at Harrogate has attracted a lot of attention – people keep saying they didn't know it could do so much, so easily,” said Debra Berry, Cormars Customer Experience Manager. The Wool Carpet Focus Group Fame and the free-range fibre

The Wool Carpet Focus Group are right at the heart of the industry with a distinctive agenda to promote the “woolabilities” that make natural fibre so special – and the Harrogate show turned into something of a celebration for the campaign. Martin Curtis, the Group’s chairman (pictured right), was the proud recipient of the “Hall of Fame” accolade in the Wool Carpet & Rug Awards, a prestigious event promoted by the Campaign for Wool and British Wool, for his “energy and enthusiasm in promoting wool as the fibre of choice in the flooring industry.” “Hall of Fame winners are chosen for their passion and excellence, for demonstrating industry influence and impact, with the commitment to grow and shape the wool industry,” said Peter Ackroyd, COO of The Campaign for Wool. Sentiment is swinging the way of wool and The Flooring Show was a showcase of growing investment in wool carpets by leading manufacturers. The “woolabilities” include bouncebackability, biodegradability, cleanability, breathability and unflammability – and all from environmentally-friendly sheep which Martin memorably described as “the original free range animal”. www.woolcarpetsnaturally.org

Visualize-it The smartest sampling

Imagine a lectern sample that immediately comes alive in your hand by showing itself in a real room on your smart phone while you're stood in the store! Technology companies are competing for solutions that visualise carpet and LVT effectively in room sets to help consumers be more ambitious about investing in higher quality and more interestingly designed floors. London-based Visualise-It have been working in this sector more than most and delivered many effective solutions to manufacturers and retailers, including Carpetright in the UK. They were visiting Harrogate this year to develop their relationship with several companies regarding a new application that scans a QR-code on the back of sampling to instantly show that design in a real roomset or in the consumer’s own home. “This technology is direct and effective in keeping the consumer interested right at the point of sale,” says Maurice Raynor of Visualize-It (pictured left). “The consumer’s ability to actually imagine what a small square of flooring will really look like in their home is accepted as a major obstacle to closing a sale – especially if the product is expensive. “Our approach is quick, easy and fun for the customer and a great way for the retailer to engage in a meaningful way with visitors to their store – taking out a lot of the uncertainty and risk to ensure the consumer knows what they are getting, and gets what they want,” said Maurice. www.visualize-it.com

Get set for 2019! Planning is already underway for next year’s show which will be presented in a modern new branding style (see right) and with new features. Show organisers Ocean Media are meeting with exhibitors to discuss future plans. “Our priority is to work with exhibitors to ensure that bona fide buyers from across the flooring industry are invited to attend the show, and that we have interesting and relevant content for them to see, learn from and share in when they are with us,” said event manager Kane Thomas. www.theflooringshow.com

Lano Passion for Pashmina

Pashmina and Pashmina Luxe, the first polyester carpets from Lano, proved a major draw at this year’s Flooring Show, with the Belgian manufacturer presenting the carpets as part of its growing Halcyon brand. Technically superior, the fibre used in these new styles ensures lasting colour and stain-resistance, as well as a super-soft, velvet-like feel that is making polyester popular in homes across the country. In a palette of modern tones and with a silk-like lustre, Pashmina’s velvet cut-pile joins the existing Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe super-soft polypropylene qualities. Gary Alp, sales manager, said: “Retailers loved the dense and precise velvet pile that gives this quality a premium feel. The fact that Pashmina and Pashmina Luxe offer stain-resistance and fade-free colour also helps to underline that beauty and comfort don’t have to come at the price of practicality.” Lano also used the show to premiere Touchdown’s Serenade, a luxurious 60oz soft-touch Saxony crafted from stain-resistant Eccelena yarn. Bringing 16 modern colours, four and five-metre width options and a beautifully soft feel, Serenade is perfect for homes looking for luxury carpet that’s cost-effective and practical too. With an anti-scuff polyurethane finish, Distinctive Flooring’s parquet products are far more durable and hardwearing than natural wood – requiring much less ongoing maintenance, too. “Suitable for heavy commercial and light industrial use, whether to complement a rustic design, a Scandi-inspired space or a contemporary theme, with six different colours to choose from, it’s easy to find a parquet product to suit your needs,” says Distinctive Flooring.

Westex Carpets showcased its new LVT collection at the recent Flooring Show, offering authentic reproductions of real wood and stone in contemporary shades to suit any interior design.

The collection includes two plank designs, both available in 12 contemporary wood shades; Select offers a cleaner wood appearance whilst Natural offers a more characteristic and knotted appearance.

Embossed in register to give a genuine feel and appearance of real wood, the pattern repeat, every eight boards, is designed to provide authentic variation as seen in real wood floors. The large plank size 152.40cm x 22.86cm (60in x 9in) with 3mm board thickness are designed to provide strength, durability

Pamera from Avenue

Avenue Flooring sales manager Stuart Reeves says wood and woodeffect flooring are mainstays in domestic interiors and homeowners now look for effects that are less ordinary.

“Whether that’s a classic oak plank in a modern grey tone, herringbone effect, or rich multi-width rustic look, it can all be found in the Ultimate Timber PU vinyl flooring collection from Avenue,” he continues.

“With the latest V-Groove technology, giving a more defined, embossed plank edge, the collection delivers more authenticity than ever before. What’s more, it delivers a more natural look and feel while still retaining the ease that makes cushion flooring such a great all-round choice.

“With the brand-new and super-stylish designs of Jacobsen, Cartier, Edgewood and Cimarron, the multi-tone chevron of Pamera and narrow board of Bristol; Ultimate Timber PU is ready to transform homes with its modern, ultra-realistic wood effects,” Mr Reeves concludes.

Xylo Flooring says its Dynamic Click Vinyl flooring is “ahead of its time, offering all shades of varying colours, from white washed wood grains to dark walnut and smoked-effect finished tones, to suit even the most individual tastes and styles”.

The company further states that Dynamic is laid in planks using the renowned and reliable Valinge 2G click system. It is commercially rated and can therefore accommodate any type of environment, whether it be at home or in the office.

Palace Offcut Art from Lifestyle Floors Lifestyle Floors head of digital and marketing Inga Morris says her company’s LVT collections have increased sales every year since their launch in 2008.

“This autumn, we will be presenting 27 new and exciting LVT decors for the collections, each designed to inspire and delight. In addition to the usual wood and tile designs, many of the new decors, including Offcut Art (pictured), are quirky and will give homes and contract locations an individual and unique finish.

“The versatility of LVT is one reason for its popularity. From rooms with underfloor heating, bathrooms, kitchens and living areas, our beautiful LVT floors are the perfect choice.

“The new Offcut Art décor is an eccentric geometric wood design. Part of Lifestyle Floors’ Palace range, Offcut Art is available in both Dryback and 5G Clic formats, ensuring contractors, retailers and customers can choose the most appropriate fitting method,” says Ms Morris.

Another of the more recent vinyl introductions was launched by Forbo Flooring Systems in the form of its Eternal de Luxe. This has been designed to follow the established format of providing a wide variety of design options and high performance in demanding applications, the company states.

The Eternal de Luxe collection includes fresh wood features, along with stone effects. It is further enhanced by authentic embossing structures that add even more realism to the designs. The PUR lacquering is also designed to ensure the highest performance and longevity of the floor covering. Eternal de Luxe is available in a compact version and an acoustic version.

January will see the launch of EarthWerks brand new Lagoon collection at Bau in Munich, Germany, developed in line with the latest fashions, design concepts and colours.

Soft as well as structured décors are featured, and a distinction of this line is the availability of each colour in two distinct specifications, the company states. Both are suitable for commercial and residential sectors and at competitive price levels.

The first specification is a 2mm plank with a 0.3mm wear-layer for glue down. The second is an ‘on trend’ 4.2mm Rigid SPC Clic with a 0.55mm wear-layer and smart drop-down lock system for fast and seamless installation. The two specifications also provide effective budget management for projects requiring different installation solutions and/or different durability needs.

Flooring factsheet Luxury underfoot

from Interfloor

Duralay underlays for LVT create the perfect installation

Interfloor has developed a specialist collection of Duralay underlays and adhesives designed to make luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) even more comfortable underfoot and to ensure the tiles look good for longer. The new LVT underlays are quick to fit, easy to work with, and help to reduce the need for sub-floor preparation and damage to flooring due to uneven sub-floors. The LVT adhesives are suitable for single stick, double-stick or for directly sticking LVT to the sub-floor. Duralay LVT Multi-Fit Underlay can be fitted loose lay, single stick or double-stick depending upon installation requirements and provides increased underfoot comfort and improved noise reduction. It also provides an excellent sub-floor, masking minor surface imperfections, and helping prevent the overstraining of joints. Duralay Multi-Fit underlay is particularly suited to larger areas and commercial installations. Duralay LVT Low-Grab Underlay is a versatile solution which can be used to install ‘click system’ luxury vinyl tiles. The underlay is loose-laid over the sub-floor or existing flooring significantly reducing sub-floor preparation times and the new flooring is positioned and laid onto the underlay’s unique low grab backing, holding the tiles in position preventing movement during and after installation. Duralay LVT Dry-Back Underlay can be used to install ‘dry back’ luxury vinyl tiles. A release film is peeled back to expose the pre-applied adhesive, the new flooring is then positioned and pressed onto the underlay’s unique high grab backing. The adhesive allows an open time whereby tiles or planks can be lifted and re-positioned.

New high-end edgings for luxury installations Interfloor has introduced new premium edgings offering a top-quality addition to its existing Gripperrods range. The new Premier floor edgings are available in two modern finishes that will complement the current trends in luxury home accessories. The Premier range includes a very on-trend brushed steel nickel or an elegant bright chrome which will co-ordinate well with other home accessories, light switches and door handles to ensure a seamless finish. Both finishes are available in six specialist trims designed to provide the perfect solution for all types of flooring. For further information, please visit www.interfloor.com

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 62

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 64

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS November 2018

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

THE STOCKLISTS November 2018

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

www.smg-group.co.uk Contact: Mike Reed Tel: 0118 932 3832 info@smg-group.co.uk

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS November 2018

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

BUSINESS NEWS Rackhams acquired by Headlam

London-based wholesaler Rackhams has been acquired by the Headlam Group, Europe’s biggest floorcovering distributor, adding to its other acquisition in London during the summer of Ashmount Flooring Supplies in Tottenham. Rackhams, established in 1935, is based in Higham Park in East London and has annual sales of about £5m. Headlam commented: “This acquisition continues to meaningfully expand the Group’s presence within the Greater London area. A strong Rackhams ‘brand’ has been developed in recent years – Rackhams will continue to be operated under its own trade brand, from its existing premises while being supported by the Headlam management team, distribution network, and centralised and financial resources.”

Tapi doubles sales

Tapi has almost doubled its sales despite increasing losses. Turnover grew 88 percent to nearly £57 million in the 12 months to December 30 but pre-tax losses were nearly £11 million. Tapi was founded by Martin Harris, son of Lord Harris who founded the Carpetright chain and the growth of Tapi to more than 110 stores by the end of this year has put pressure on Carpetright. However, Tapi has said that its phase of rapid expansion is coming to a close and says it is confident of now turning the operation into a profitable business.

Certain uncertainty The future of flooring in 2019!

It's time for The Stocklists end of year survey to take the temperature of the trade and find out how 2018 was for your business and what you think the prospects are for next year. Since nobody from the Prime Minister down appears to have too much of an idea what the future holds for British business, it seems a little unfair to ask you! But we suspect that flooring retailers are more pragmatic and that you know your customers and so probably have a good understanding of how they are coping with the uncertainty. Are the consumers who are buying, buying better? Have so many people deferred flooring purchases since the recession, that decent business is finally coming through? Or are too many people ‘sat on their hands’, waiting to see what happens to allow you to grow your business. Manufacturers and suppliers have responded to the competitive market with maybe less launches overall, but with some innovative ideas and sophisticated product offers particularly in some higher value areas. Is that strategy working to improve your margins? Have your say….

Karndean sustains growth

UK-based Karndean Designflooring has reported its fifth year of double-digit growth – sales have now almost doubled in the period since 2012 to £85 million in 2017. Profits topped £10 million for the first time in the year-ended December 31, 2017.

Imports fall

Carpet imports into the UK from Europe showed a marked decline in the summer with the latest figure for August showing imports from Belgium down 11% and 4.6% down for The Netherlands. Latest figures also shed light on the extent of global trade which some feel is switching away from Europe. In fact, the August figures show just £10m worth of carpets came in from Turkey, India and China that month compared to nearly £40m from the Belgians and Dutch.

The online survey takes less than four minutes. It’s anonymous and doesn’t need any form filling. Please help us inform the industry. Visit www.thestocklists.com and click on the survey banner to take part.

Creative connectivity

From 11 to 14 January 2019, the Hannover Exhibition Center will serve as a four-day hotspot for the global flooring industry. Featuring the Create'N'Connect lead theme, Domotex 2019 will shine a spotlight on innovative ideas and developments relating to the current megatrend of “connectivity”. During the run-up to the event, Domotex invited exhibitors and creative designers to submit their concepts for a special display entitled Framing Trends (Hall 9). In September, the expert jury chaired by Peter Ippolito convened to select the most imaginative ideas. These include: The “Rain of Stories” project by Indian manufacturer M.A. Trading (pictured top right) presents stories on the origins of products, underscoring that their design is not to be understood as a creative act of individual competence, but instead as the interaction of several different competences. The “Red Dirt Rug” installation by artist Rena Detrixhe explores the relationship between man and soil. Designed by Schmidhuber in cooperation with Carpet Concept, the “Connectivity Wheel” (pictured bottom right) playfully links visitors with their surroundings by setting the wheel in motion via their steps. www.domotex.de THE STOCKLISTS November 2018
