Viva Vivendi Welcome new Vivendi into your world and you

have a friend for life. Vivendi from Associated

Weavers is so supremely tough and durable that we’ve awarded it our best-ever double warranty assurance of 25 years for stain and wear issues.

Why? Simply because its performance is

unbeatable. And it will sit happily anywhere in the home. Any room. Any life. That’s the Vivendi promise.

Deep-down technology at its heart

Years of industry-leading work by our designers and

technicians have resulted in a new tenth-gauge twin-ply solution-dyed nylon fibre that we call iVivo.

Because of the amazing properties of this yarn it is stain resistant and fully bleach-cleanable, without any detriment to the carpet.

Stressfree in every respect

In addition to its welcoming longevity, the new iVivo yarn offers supreme comfort and ultimate luxury

for any room in your home – suitable for any

lifestyle and any degree of rough use that a heavy domestic carpet would be expected to undergo.

Open your heart to Soul and Vibes

Two ranges of Vivendi are currently offered, with

more to come later this year. Vibes is a 1695gm twist in 14 subtle colourways like Baby Powder and

Sandy Taupe. And Soul, a 2205gm Saxony, has 14 equally fashionable hues ranging from Blanched Almond to Windsor Tan.

Thanks to all those who visited our busy stand at The Flooring Show in Harrogate. We had a great reaction to our latest collections - especially the new loop piles of Hoxton and Primose Hill. These premium products have just arrived in the market in two beautiful designs - a subtle stripe (Primrose Hill) and a sophisticated cross-stitch (Hoxton) – in luxurious 100% 3-ply New Zealand wool.

Carpet&FlooringReview Scandi style

Inspired by the current trend for Scandinavian style interiors, Ulster’s latest loop range HʌBITÜS speaks of comfort, cosiness and simple living. Perhaps the most striking designs of the range, the tactile feel of Urban and Rustik, combined with the calming grey colourways, answer the increasing demand for relaxing neutrals, subtle patterns and textures which create a warm feeling without overwhelming an interior.

Best described as a classic, sophisticated chevron, Urban combines a sharp geometric look with the softness of the wool loops which would look just as good in a city loft apartment with exposed concrete and steel as it would in a country retreat with a log burner and wooden beams. By contrast, Rustik is a more striking, linear ‘cable’ design inspired by the ‘Chunky Knit’ weave and Aran Sweaters. This more defined pattern makes it ideal for areas such as hallways and stairs. Both Urban and Rustik contain six colourways; ‘Air’, ‘Rain’, ‘Smoke’, ‘Rope’, ‘River’, and ‘Wharf ’ consisting of a neutral colour palette of relaxing earthy tones. Available in colour matching 5m, 4m, 3m, 2m and 1m widths HʌBITÜS is perfect for heavy residential wear. Manufactured in Denmark by danfloor (an Ulster Group Company specialising in the manufacture of tufted products) the ranges utilises a dense loop pile texture to create a natural contemporary floorcovering that is also soft and warm. Re: entry level Apollo

This autumn, Cormar Carpets is launching another new carpet collection that is simply out of this world!

Apollo Elite joins Cormar’s easy clean family using the same 100% Excellon fibre as its sister range, Apollo Plus. It is tufted on 1/10thth gauge machinery and features a colour bank of 14 popular shades – four plains and 10 heathers – with a core of greys and neutrals including Campsie Cliff and Grey Partridge. “Apollo Plus has been a successful entry level range for us, over the past four years,” said David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets. “Now we felt the time was right to introduce a great value, more premium-led collection. “We’ve taken the same concept and developed the yarn, as well as increasing the pile height and weight to engineer a premier product that is still fantastic value-for-money and which looks and feels fantastic. Given the uncertain economic climate, this well priced carpet range will appeal to new homeowners and those on a budget who want to bring affordable quality and style into their home.” In line with other members of Cormar’s easy clean family of products, Apollo Elite is bleach cleanable and stain resistant, carrying a 10 year wear and stain warranty. It is expected to retail under £20 sq m and comes in both 4m and 5m widths. All Cormar’s stain resistant polypropylene carpets, as well as it’s wool twists and wool loops are produced on site at its Lancashire mills and distributed in the UK and Eire via its own delivery fleet. F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s Stopgap 1200 Pro High Performance Smoothing Underlayment, Styccobond F3 adhesive and Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive have been used to install carpet and vinyl floorcoverings as part of the refurbishment of Grade A Listed building, The Russell Institute in Paisley, Scotland.

Base Flooring Solutions of Paisley, were contracted to install 700m2 of floorcoverings in the building, which has been refurbished for use as council offices. Firstly, Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment was applied over the total area. The smoothing underlayment is fast setting and within an hour of application, it was walk-on hard. The fast drying properties of Stopgap 1200 Pro also allow it to be dry enough to receive new floorcoverings from just four hours. In addition to its fast setting and fast drying formulation, Stopgap 1200 has been specially designed for use directly over old adhesive residues, including bitumen and carpet tile tackifiers, without the need for priming. The high performance, self-smoothing product provides a professional, cost-effective solution to challenging floors, without the need for mechanical removal of adhesive residues. It is suitable for use in clinical and biologically sensitive areas such as hospitals, laboratories and clean rooms. Base Flooring Solutions used Styccobond F3 flooring adhesive, which has high strength, good wet grab and is suitable for the installation of most carpets, to adhere the carpet floorcoverings. Finally, Styccobond F44, a solvent-free acrylic emulsion adhesive with strong initial tack and high bond strength, was used to secure the vinyl floorcoverings, providing the listed building with an aesthetically pleasing floor finish, in time for the opening of the new council offices. John Gavin, Managing Director of Base Flooring Solutions said: “F. Ball products always enable us to create a long lasting and attractive floor finish and this job was no different. We are very glad that our F. Ball representative recommended we use this range of products – we’re very pleased with the end result of our refurbishment of The Russell Institute.” T 01583 361 633

Contributing to care

Polysafe safety flooring was recently donated by UK manufacturer Polyflor to the new Salford Institute for Dementia Hub at the University of Salford. Polyflor donated approximately 90m² of Polysafe Wood fx PUR safety flooring in the Oiled Oak shade which was installed by Flooring Supply Centre, Liverpool. The £300,000 dementia hub, which was designed by Day Architectural, aims to be an outreach centre for the public to access the latest research and ideas about living with dementia, as well as being a working base for the University’s dementia associates and researchers. The centre was designed with help from people living with dementia and features a dementia friendly garden, a visitors’ centre and a special kitchen built to demonstrate the latest dementia friendly designs. The new dementia hub was opened in May 2017 by Salford-born actor Christopher Ecclestone who discussed his own experiences of his late father’s dementia at the opening event. Polyflor has a number of flooring ranges suitable for use within dementiafriendly environments and has forged a close relationship with the Salford Institute for Dementia to better understand the needs of care homes and other healthcare facilities. Polyflor collaborated with the institute to produce their Specialist Care brochure, available on the Polyflor website, which presents dementia-friendly flooring principles. Polyflor is also a longstanding partner of the International Dementia Design Network at the University of Salford and a member of local Dementia Action Alliances who are committed to transforming the lives of the 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK. Professor Anthea Innes, Director of the Salford Institute for Dementia commented, “The finished hub looks fantastic and we want to say a big thank you to Polyflor for kindly donating this flooring to our project. This slip resistant wood effect design is ideal for use in dementia-friendly environments.” T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com

NEWS Birmingham beckons

The January Furniture Show continues to develop as the UK’s premier furniture and interior furnishings event. Building on the success of the previous 3 years, the 2018 show will see a fresh look with new exhibitors and enhanced features, and returns to Birmingham’s NEC for four days from 21st to 24th January.

Planning for the 2018 show is well advanced with a new website in place and a new marketing campaign underway. Over 500 furniture, flooring and fabric companies will show their new collections to over 21,000 visitors, with major UK and International brands exhibiting alongside new and developing ones. Hall 2 will be home to an extended Flooring Showcase, with leading soft and hard-flooring companies including Abingdon, Associated Weavers, Forbo and Furlong returning with new designs, innovations and on-trend colours and patterns. As an increasing number of retailers offer a more comprehensive selection of interior furniture and furnishings to their customers, flooring is becoming a progressively important sector in the show. Feedback to the show organisers from those who attended in 2017, showed that the Flooring Showcase had become an intrinsic part of the January Furniture Show to them. Joining the carpet and hard-flooring companies will be several well known rug companies, including Think Rugs, Rama Carpets and Gooch. With a fresh look, navigation around the 5 show halls will be easier, with more focused product types in each hall. The show also has a new website with new facilities, including an enhanced product search, the option for visitors to make their own favourites list and see the location of their favourites in the halls, and an opportunity to request product information from exhibitors in advance. www.januaryfurnitureshow.com

Growing industry

Bridgemere Garden Centre, Nantwich, is the latest recipient of flooring from Itec Contract Floors, a brand that prides itself on the provision of an exceptional decorative vinyl flooring for commercial interiors.

Itec is well versed when it comes to garden centre flooring specification, and the product and service provided to those at the Bridgemere Garden Centre met and exceeded the standards for which the brand is recognised. Selected in classic oak design Tavel 631 was 450m2 of Concept Woods, offering quintessential wood style with authentic swirl and grain marks, while 150m2 of sister stable Concept Ultimate was chosen in a textured grey Raffia 697 look, again enhancing Itec’s status as the go-to for decorative underfoot solutions. Trevor Wharton Carpets were tasked with flooring specification, MD Trevor Wharton commenting: “Having worked with the Itec team on a number of occasions, we knew they could provide flooring choice to meet our needs, with a combination of value, durability, ease of maintenance and crucially looks. We’ve been clever with our use of designs at Bridgemere, delineating zones through the use of both Concept Woods and Concept Ultimate, in contrasting colourways. The main restaurant, café and walkway areas are now clearly separated, without compromising on the authenticity of the aesthetic.” Concept Woods and Concept Ultimate both arrive with a Hyperguard+ PUR surface layer that will help the floors to stand the test of time, while also backed by a Class 34 Very Heavy Commercial wear rating, excellent news for high footfall locations such as garden centres which will also be subject to wheeled traffic including wheelchairs and prams. The surface layer is also inherently slip resistance, adding to the floors’ all-round credentials at a time when customer safety is imperative. Garden centres are increasingly becoming ‘destination stores’, the perfect place for families to spend an afternoon browsing outdoor products and also relaxing in the adjoining restaurant and café spaces. With this in mind, the commercial flooring specified was to provide not only maintenance qualities and a long life, but also a stunning aesthetic; a combination that has been identified and acted upon within the Itec range. Domotex by design

The Carpet Design Awards are gearing up for another great celebration of flooring excellence. Designers and makers of modern hand-made carpets have until November 1 to submit their entries for the highly coveted award.

The Carpet Design Awards are an international badge of distinction, given in recognition of quality and design excellence in hand-made carpets and rugs. Presented annually at Domotex, they will be in their 13th year in 2018. Next year¹s awards will be conferred in eight categories, with the winners receiving their prizes at a special ceremony held at Domotex on Saturday, 13 January, at the Carpet Design Awards display in Hall 9. Applications for the awards are submitted online, and each entrant can submit up to three designs per category. Entry is restricted to designers and manufacturers who are exhibiting their exclusive carpet creations at Domotex 2018. The only exception to this is the “Best Studio Artist Design” category, which is also open to designers who are not exhibiting at Domotex. There is no entry fee for submissions for the awards. The Carpet Design Awards help to give expression to cutting-edge innovations and emerging trends in the carpet industry. Since the inception of the awards, the categories have therefore been refined and updated to reflect industry trends. Thus, the 2018 awards have two new categories: Best Interior (high-end customization project or rug installation demonstrated with high quality images) and Best Communication (successful marketing or branding campaign demonstrated with high-quality images). An international jury headed by Michael Mandapati, carpet expert and president of Warp & Weft, New York, will assess all of the entries and shortlist for each of the eight categories three carpets that are characterized by exceptional design, quality and craftsmanship. The carpets submitted will be judged in terms of design and design concept, material, execution, structure and quality, and sustainability and branding. The 24 shortlisted carpets will be displayed in Hall 9 during Domotex. In January 2018, the jury will then select one winner in each category.

Kind-hearted staff from Evesham based luxury vinyl flooring specialist, Karndean Designflooring, have raised £11,000 in support of three charities Breast Cancer Now, Mentor Link and Evesham Adventure playground as part of its annual charity golf day at Hilton Puckrup Hall Hotel, Tewkesbury. After the success of previous Paul Barratt, managing director of Karndean Designflooring, Sam Dawson, golf days, raising funds for manager of Evesham Adventure Birmingham Children’s Playground, Poppy Whatmore (aged eight), Hospital, St Richard¹s Jooles Whatmore (aged ten) and Amelia Hospice and CLIC Sargent Ainsworth (aged seven). to name but a few, Karndean decided once again to host the event this year, with the money raised being split between three charities, two of which are local to Evesham. The event also featured a raffle and an auction, with prizes including a framed and signed England cricket test match shirt, a whole day spent on the airfield and military testing ground at Duxford including a flight in a tiger moth and Swarovski crystal jewellery. Breast Cancer Now is the UK’s largest breast cancer research charity who support 450 scientists making vital discoveries, campaign for more accessible treatments and raise awareness to help detect the disease earlier. Mentor Link is a Worcestershire based charity and one of two nominated by Karndean staff. Dedicated to supporting vulnerable and distressed children and young people by providing them with a volunteer mentor. Evesham Adventure Playground is another local cause nominated by staff, enriching the lives of young people and their families by ensuring they have the space to have fun together.

The conditions for participation and full jury bios are available online at www.domotex.de/en/cda .

Sam Dawson, manager of Evesham Adventure Playground, commented: “All of us at the Adventure Playground are extremely grateful for Karndean¹s support. The funds that have been raised will make a big difference in helping to keep all our activities running to a high standard, and we can see from our visitors faces that the playground has a real positive impact on their family life and general wellbeing. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all at Karndean for their contribution.”

Uplifting experience

Bogan’s Carpets, Merseyside’s premier carpet superstore is one of the latest retailers to install a Kenburn Carpet Crusher for recycling their new and uplifted carpet and underlay waste.

Established in 1948, Bogans is still a family run company who pride themselves in offering exceptional customer service, which includes the uplifting and removing of their customers’ old carpet and underlay waste. Nik Burrows from Bogans comments, “Due to the large volumes of flooring we install it’s inevitable that our fitters will uplift and dispose of hundreds of square metres of post-consumer carpet and underlay waste every week.” “By purchasing a Kenburn Carpet Crusher we now have a zero waste to landfill policy as our waste is now used as a fuel for “waste to energy” which costs less than landfill.” “Also our customers are delighted to know that our recycling initiatives prevent their old carpet and underlay waste ending up in landfill,” he added. Simon Wells from Kenburn adds, “We can visit your premises anywhere in mainland UK and a brief no obligation waste survey can determine how much money can be saved by recycling your waste”. Kenburn is a member of Carpet Recycling UK, the industry led membership association which is driving carpet waste recycling forward. T 01727 844988 www.kenburn.co.uk 30 October 2017

Woolabilities - selling benefits Wool carpets are close to the heart of the UK consumer but with increasing competition from synthetic fibres, wool has to work a little harder to promote the “woolabilities” that make it so special. Here’s our ‘Wool Workshop’ - a selling aid to help to trade consumers up to premium products by selling the benefits of natural fibre.

SAFE

PRACTICAL Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages. COMFORT Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

DURABLE

SAFETY Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

EASY-CARE

ECO/ENVIRONMENTAL Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

THE BEST CARPET WOOL

COMFORT

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Carpet&FlooringReview

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

Wool and Wallpaper at Wool Trends Once again there was plenty to interest visitors to The Flooring Show at Harrogate. In Hall C where wool carpet has made a strident resurgence in recent years - there was the inspirational Wool Trends area which creates a village-like area around which many of the quality carpet brands nestle. Created by the Campaign for Wool, which promotes and supports the entire wool industry from flooring to fabrics and furnishings.

The revival of wallpaper was displayed strongly to highlight how wool and wallpaper do compliment each other. Pattern is back as a leading style for homes. Room themes are increasingly taken from the feature wall with all other room elements deriving from it. The Wool Trends area showed how two distinct patterns can work together and provided a snapshot of this season’s current styles for complimentary wool flooring. Calm and Beautiful was the theme for the bedroom which featured the Adam range ‘Catherine Lace’ - which worked within a bedroom setting creating a very feminine and airy style. In contrast, the study had a carpet range by Ulster - ‘Fusion’. This was in striations of blue and greys, a subtle but strong design that allows numerous wall or accessory shades to be selected. It was displayed with a contrast deep blue walls and was very eye-catching.

Grey held court once again with Axminster’s ‘Hazy Day - Ice Skating Mouse’ reflecting the trend for geometric pattern and rooms that reflect several tonal shades. Contrasting to these pale greys were the stripes displayed by ‘Lakeland Herdwick' from Brockway Carpets - a stunning tailored look in 100% wool. Set against a dramatic large-scale patterned cream and black wall - the room made a strong statement with an over-arching masculine tone.

Fusion by Ulster Carpets as shown on the Wool Trends area at The Flooring Show.

On the beige scale - loop piles are back with the trend for chunkier becoming more prevalent. Cavalier’s subtle loop was a small suggestion of the consumer’s growing interest in texture - a trend also being showcased by Brockway Carpets on their stand - chunkier loop style carpet is finding its way back after a few years out of the limelight - loops of course are brilliantly forgiving and will reduce signs of tracking and flattening in busy areas.

Country Life… Wool is the Answer!

The new Flock and Roll is wool! This is according to Country Life magazine, which has dedicated several pages to the story of British Wool in its Decorex issue. The fibre was honoured to be chosen for the Sensory installations hosted by this leading design event at Syon Park.

Stunning carpets from Brintons and Roger Oates were displayed against the high impact photography of the rugged Cumbrian landscape where the photoshoot took place. Sheep and textiles in the rural landscape showing the entire fleece to floor story! A seminar hosted by the interiors editor Giles Kime put wool under the spotlight with designers. Kit Kemp, the celebrated interior designer and owner of the boutique chain, Firmdale Hotel group, uses wool fabrics on walls and on floors. Asked why she uses so much wool, she said that: ‘Wool gave rooms a feeling of true comfort whilst being extremely versatile, durable and easy to maintain.”

NEWS Hull’s home-from-home

A complete floors and walls solution from Altro has been used to create a relaxing, stylish and home from home environment for mums-to-be in a new birth centre at Hull Women and Children’s Hospital.

The new midwife-led Fatima Allam Birth Centre has been designed to meet the needs of women who want a more natural childbirth experience. It comprises three birthing rooms, each individually designed to create a homely and relaxed feel in beautiful surroundings, while also providing a safe, hygienic environment. The rooms feature a birthing bed, birthing pool, ensuite bathroom and additional equipment, which is cleverly concealed within hidden wall panelling. The design vision for the Fatima Allam Birth Centre was to create an environment that looked entirely non-clinical, a home from home for mums-to-be; relaxing, calm, very contemporary in its design and a tranquil haven in which to experience this life-changing event. Andrew Ledger, contracts manager for Apleona, which provides facilities management for the building, oversaw the new construction and was part of the team that devised the overall concept of the birth centre. “We had a very specific idea of what we wanted the centre to look like, and how we wanted it to function,” Andrew says. “As a midwife-led unit, a relaxed and homely atmosphere was essential, however a priority was of course infection control, hygiene, durability and quality. “We specified Altro floors and walls from the start because we are using these products elsewhere in the hospital with a great deal of success. They meet all our clinical hygiene and infection control needs, while also offering a superb range of colours and textures, which makes them ideal for creating a modern and stylish environment. “The quality and durability of Altro is a major factor too because, as a PFI project, the long-term cost is under close scrutiny. Professional artist and designer Adele Howitt, from Studio Eleven Gallery & Workshop in Hull, won a commission from the hospital to design the interior concept for the new birth centre. She provided various colour ways, materials, and themes, to inspire the team. The colour palette was agreed and a range of approved products to work with, including Altro floors and walls. “Rather than hanging pictures on the walls, I wanted to create more profound artistic design features in the birth and shower rooms so I used Altro Whiterock Digiclad to create statement walls from floor to ceiling. This is a fantastic product for design-led projects because you can print any image or photograph onto it, and the quality is superb.” T 01457 850660 www.altro.co.uk

Strengthening sales at Cormar

Cormar Carpets has further strengthened its sales team with two new appointments. Covering the North West region, Colin Adlam will be responsible for the Greater Manchester area and Ryan Johnson for Merseyside and Cheshire. As business continues to grow, Cormar has increased its sales force with the two new additions taking the total sales team employed by the company to more than 30, covering independent retailers throughout Great Britain and Ireland. Said David Judge, managing director at Cormar Carpets: “We are pleased to welcome on board Colin and Ryan who will be valuable assets to the sales team, and the North West region.

Harrogate

Review 2017

Hope at the heart of Harrogate A happy Harrogate has sent the industry into the Q3 sales season with hope in their heart and plenty of new launches to deliver new business to the bottom line. After what almost all commentators regard as a flat Summer for sales (at best!), the mood at The Flooring Show was distinctly upbeat and the halls at Harrogate were busy throughout the three day event with exhibitors reporting a good supply of new business to be secured. “It has been a really positive show,” said Phil Hartley at Victoria Carpets. “We’ve had an excellent level of visitors and business has been good – it has been noticeable what a positive atmosphere there is out there.”

“We’ve had an excellent level of visitors and business has been good – it is noticeable what a positive atmosphere there is out there.”

Associated Weavers made a return to Harrogate after a seven-year absence and were glad to be back. “The quality here is very, very good,” said MD Steve Elliott. “This is a very professional event now and the organisers have done a great job presenting a really good looking showcase for flooring.” The tone of the Harrogate show is all important as the industry enters its busiest period before Christmas.”Harrogate is still the main focus for our industry and a good show fires everyone up and this year it has been a very motivational event,” said David Cormack of Cormar. If the market is taking the rough with the smooth in terms of sales performance this year, the product portfolio is seeing plenty of growth in a tale of hard floors and soft carpet.

“A good show fires everyone up and this year it has been a very motivational event.” LVT options are strengthening on a daily basis and market leaders like Karndean, Amtico and Earthwerks were out in force with smart new product developments along with major intiatives at Lifestyle Floors in rigid LVT and some clever marketing ideas at J2. In carpets, the supremacy of soft is unabated with major launches from market leaders like Abingdon, Associated Weavers, Cormar and Furlong Flooring. Clever engineering continues to boost the performance of polypropylene technology while there is also a strong movement towards polyester as the fibre of choice for the middle and upper-market synthetics to give a soft feel with durability. The work of the wool people to coordinate their promotion of “woolability” benefits is really starting to come through with a coordinated campaign from British Wool, the Campaign for Wool and the Wool Carpet Focus group. And design in the wool sector is having a heyday at the moment with some superb creativity from companies like Adam, Axminster, Brockway, Cavalier and Ulster and some niche examples we’ll be showing you in our next issue from Bond Worth and Master Weavers. Brintons deserve a special mention for their stunning display in Hall C of a threedimensional wool landscape of a typically British country scene – a concept seen in recent advertising in this magazine but which came to life in big, impressive style at the show and became a focus for selfies and twittering during the event!

NEWS Retro rhetoric

Louis de Poortere has introduced two new designs to its hugely successful Bo Bohemian rug collection that celebrates the Boho spirit.

In Agadir, the collection now includes a striking tribute to the tribal designs of the Atlas region, reimagined through flowing colour mixes overlaid with a pattern grid. Bringing a new take on tribal looks, Agadir comes in four colourways. Inspired by the walls of a crumbling roman villa, Como is the second new design to join Bo Bohemian. Echoing the trend for worn effects seen on luxury wallpapers typified in the rough luxury trend, Como comes in four colourways in azure-like blues and concrete greys. Woven on jacquard wilton looms in a combination of wool and cotton chenille, the latter adding a subtle lustre to shifting colours, Agadir and Como are available initially in the four most popular standard sizes.

Stripe style

With perfectly coordinating stripe and plain styles, in updated colourways for 2017, Penrose from Crown Floors is the ideal carpet range for homeowners looking for feature flooring in their home.

Modern shades including gull grey, silver dawn and mother of pearl can be matched to three tonal stripe colourways of taupe ribbon, silver ribbon and greyscale ribbon to give a sophisticated look free from worry. Thanks to Satin Soft Easy Clean fibre, Penrose is safe from stains for 15-years and can be cleaned with a diluted bleach solution.

Alan Russell, sales director, Louis de Poortere, comments on the new styles: “The Bo Bohemian collection is popular with its worn, vintage looks incredibly current. Agadir and Como simply add to the depth and appeal of the retro-rhetoric of Bo Bohemian, historic and worn looks given a modern spirit.” Made in Europe and hand-finished with reinforced edges, the Bo Bohemian collection also includes the vintage feel of Flowers and patchwork nomadic of Tribal. 01505 615663 www.louisdepoortere.com,

“While silk and velvet looks seem to be dominating the market right now, Penrose is still a strong seller for Crown Floors,” explains Gavin Freebairn, field sales manager for the brand. “Stripes are big business and Penrose provides the perfect mix of up-to-date palettes, satin-soft comfort and easy cleaning. For many homeowners, it is the ideal carpet and a fantastic way to bring feature flooring to their home.” In a pattern repeat that’s ideal for use on stairs, stripe styles come in a four-metre width, while all plain colours are available in four and five-metre widths for fewer seams. A two-ply yarn adds resilience and makes the carpet ideal for use in busy family areas. With five-star luxury and a 15-year wear warranty, Penrose delivers faultless quality and impressive value. The style is featured on Crown Floors’ popular Easy Clean tombola, as well as available on a lectern unit and featuring on the brand’s impressive wall unit. T 0800 898282, www.crownfloors.co.uk

Developed to cover areas such as product types and fitting methods, the courses can be tailored to the exact needs of the company, whether that’s for a good overall knowledge for builder’s merchants, or more concentrated information on specific product types and collections. Merchant, Beers Timber & Building Supplies, recently undertook one of the Academy’s Merchant Training Days to develop understanding of flooring types and fitting methods so that its staff can be more confident in discussing flooring options. The course covered product, benefits and features, add-on sales and hands-on fitting; it was warmly received by all 25 Beers staff that attended. David Keogh, branch manager for the merchant’s Liverpool outlet, says: “The course was enjoyable and I found both the theory and practical elements really informative. There was a focus on different types of product available and best practice for fitting them. This is sure to help us in selling the product and I would have no hesitation in recommending this training day to others.” With outlets across the north west, Beers Timber & Building Supplies is a successful independent operation that relies on excellent customer service. Paul Conboy, director for the merchant, organised the training day: “Staff who were previously nervous about giving flooring advice now have the confidence to advise and upsell product to customers. We’ve received complimentary feedback on the course, especially on how they enjoyed the practical part, which has given them the belief to sell flooring. I would definitely recommend this course to other merchants.” The Academy can accommodate companies of all sizes at its state-of-the-art facility in Manchester. Presented by experts, courses can be tailored to meet the exact needs of companies, so that businesses can benefit from the positive impact of knowledgeable and confident staff. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

‘Dead-cat’ bounce in Summer sales? Was the summer selling season a success or a ‘dead-cat bounce’ as one commentator called it!

Mixed reports from the flooring industry suggested a patchy Summer, just like the weather – sunshine and showers – but the British Retail Consortium said the UK High Street was up 2.9% year-on-year in August with non-food including furnishings returning to growth. Helen Dickinson, BRC chief executive, commented: “August provided a welcome pick-up in retail sales across channels, with non-food returning to growth as shoppers’ attentions turned to homewares, autumn clothing ranges and the new school term.” But she added: “Non-Food sales have only just recovered to levels seen two years ago, after a dismal August in 2016; while strong figures for food are largely the result of rising prices, leaving growth in volume terms weaker than last year.” Prices in the flooring sector however were reported to have fallen in the summer – only by -0.1%, but this is as compared to the furniture sector as a whole which saw prices rise by 4%. Analysts GfK said their Consumer Confidence Index rose by two points over the Summer and their Major Purchase Index saw a rise of one point in August to zero and was seven points lower than August 2016, indicating that confidence in consumers wanting to buy big-ticket items including furniture had improved.

46 October 2017

Joe Staton, head of market dynamics at GfK, said: “UK Consumer Confidence rebounded to -10 this month after the score of -12 we reported in July that matched 2016’s post-Brexit low. We’re seeing an uptick in August among consumers when reviewing their personal financial situation for both the past and next 12 months, as well as a slight improvement in views about the general economic situation of the country as a whole. “These figures must be seen against the backdrop of news on inflation, public finances, jobs and growth prospects as the UK economy displays some signs of stability after a volatile start to the year. However, the Index has a lot of ground to regain to get back to black. So is this month’s rise significant? Or could we simply be witnessing a dead-cat-bounce over the dog-days of summer?” These reports follow an encouraging half-year announcement from leading European flooring distributors Headlam who said profits rose 11% on 4% sales growth for the six months ending 30 June 2017. Headlam said that trading in the second half of 2017 was “performing to expectations with continued growth in the UK and Continental Europe.” They also noted that revenue from the summer contract refurbishment season was ahead of 2016.

Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

Specialist aspects of the underlay market revealed John Lewis customers appreciate Anglo’s upcycled underlay

Interest is growing in the luxury and specialist products included within the underlay and sub-floor preparation side of the flooring market.

This has been driven by retailers advising consumers of the many benefits that this can bring to improve their flooring products.

Supporting evidence for this statement is provided below from three different areas of the market, beginning with the support for carpet recycling by John Lewis, working alongside underlay supplier Anglo Recycling. This includes carpet fitter offcuts now being used to make top quality underlay, as featured in the video hosted by the retailer’s website: https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-upcycled-felt-andrubber-underlay-137cm-width/p2401205.

A long-term supporter of Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK), John Lewis announced at the end of 2016 that its carpet recycling had risen to 35%. CRUK’s Jane Gardner states her appreciation of the support and how the retailer’s partnership with Anglo Recycling using “innovation and an entrepreneurial approach, can divert substantial amounts of carpet from landfill and provide an underlay that their partners are proud to sell and their customers really appreciate”.

A John Lewis customer reported that the upcycled felt/rubber underlay, recommended by one of its flooring specialists, was “good for reducing noise and is an effective solution”, while also making the carpet “a pleasure to walk across in bare feet”.

“The trend for increasingly luxurious and comfortable interiors means that many of our retail customers are keen to add firmer PU products to their offer.”

ratings to reduce noise and made from 100% recycled foam. Interfloor chief executive officer John Cooper says: “The trend for increasingly luxurious and comfortable interiors means that many of our retail customers are keen to add firmer PU products to their offer. Now with our new PHD range they can.

“Consumers will love PHD’s high performance features, while fitters will be impressed with how easy it is to install. We’re sure the range will be first choice for professional installations in all areas of the home.”

Unifloor Underlay Systems provides specialised acoustic, fast-track subfloor preparation solutions, including free floating sub-floor technology such as dry-lay floor preparation and acoustic options. An extensive range covers virtually every kind of floor-covering and substrate situation.

Jumpax Classic + PVC by Unifloor Underlay Systems

Interfloor states its new highest density PU underlay range has been introduced in response to market demand for firmer and more luxurious products. The three products in its Premium High Density (PHD) range are all 180kg/m³ and offer superior protection for carpets that is longer lasting and better performing as well having impressive “green” credentials.

PHD Chromium 9mm, Titanium 8mm and Palladium 10mm are designed for superior heat insulation properties with high acoustic

The company states all its products have been designed to perfectly complement a specific type of floor finish by providing the ideal blend of support, surface quality, acoustics and speed of installation. Unifloor reports that it has become synonymous for high-performance and cost-effective subfloor solutions.

Its Jumpax Family consists of six fast-track floor preparation systems. Each of these is designed to complement a specific type of floor finish and/or base floor situation, therewith providing the ideal blend of support and surface quality for a prolonged life and enhanced appearance.

NEWS Responsible “excellence”

Commercial and residential vinyl flooring specialist Polyflor has become the only flooring manufacturer to achieve an ‘Excellent’ rating for BES 6001 certification, a standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products as certified by the BRE. After being the first flooring manufacturer to obtain BES 6001 certification in 2015 with a ‘Very Good’ rating, Polyflor has further improved responsible sourcing procedures at their Whitefield and Riverside manufacturing facilities to successfully achieve the highest possible ‘Excellent’ rating. Polyflor remains the only floorcovering manufacturer to obtain the BES 6001 standard.

Polyflor’s Whitefield manufacturing site

Polyflor’s Whitefield site, which has been manufacturing for over 100 years, was awarded a fantastic score of 51 out of a maximum 52 points by BRE auditors. This score is a great achievement as it is the highest ever score awarded by the BRE for the BES 6001 standard, with over 60 companies being assessed around the world. This third party audited certification gives independent assurance that Polyflor’s products are manufactured conforming to the highest responsible sourcing standards. Now in its 3rd issue, the BES 6001 Framework standard for Responsible Sourcing sets out requirements under three main headings: Organisational Management; Supply Chain Management and Environmental and Social Responsibility Management. Improving their BES 6001 rating has been a massive undertaking for Polyflor, as gaining an ‘Excellent’ rating for this rigorous standard has taken input from all areas of the business over the past two years, with changes made to the supplier base they use, the way things are recorded and the way environmental performance is reported in Polyflor’s Sustainability Report. The hard work and challenges set out by the BES 6001 framework has driven Polyflor to scrutinize their own supply chain more than ever before with even more commitment to using trusted, local suppliers who are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified. The BES 6001 standard helps customers make better informed decisions when selecting a supplier with sound environmental credentials and also benefits those looking to achieve a high BREEAM score on their sustainable building projects where every point counts. The use of Polyflor products with ‘Excellent’ BES 6001 certification on a project can gain an additional 3.5 points to the Materials section MAT 03 (Responsible Sourcing for Materials) of a BREEAM Assessment.

Flooring factsheet Luxury underfoot

from Interfloor

Demand for more luxurious flooring products suitable for use in all areas of the home was instrumental in leading manufacturer Interfloor’s decision to introduce its highest density PU underlay range. Interfloor Sales Director Gary Cowley said: “The trend for increasingly luxurious and comfortable interiors means that many of our retail customers are keen to add firmer PU products to their offer. Now with our new Premium High Density range they can.” The three products in the new Premium High Density (PHD) range are all 180kg/m³ and offer superior protection for carpets that is longer lasting and better performing as well having impressive “green” credentials.

New PHD Chromium 9mm, the standout PU underlay in the range, has high performance Textron backing to give it more dimensional stability and cleaner cutting during installation as well as exceptional ‘shock absorber’ properties to help give it a longer life.

PHD Titanium 8mm and PHD Palladium 10mm have a polyethylene with reinforcing scrim backing. This backing also helps increase dimensional stability, is resistant to tearing and is easy to cut and trim. The PHD underlays boast superior heat insulation properties and have high acoustic ratings to reduce noise. They are also made from 100 per cent recycled foam. “Consumers will love the high performance features of our new PHD underlays, while fitters can’t fail to be impressed with how easy it is to install. We are sure the range will be a top choice for all areas of the home,” added Gary. For further information, please visit www.interfloor.com

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 54

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 56

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

Metro Group www.carpet1st.co.uk Contact: Jill Coward Tel: 01204 393539 jillcoward@carpet1st.co.uk

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 58

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds.

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 65
