Carpet&FlooringReview A new kind of Fascination

Lano has updated the popular Fascination range, introducing a new colour bank and a softer, denser yarn for a more classic twist pile look. Part of the Touchdown collection of supersoft carpets, Fascination has long been a favourite of homeowners for its broad colour bank and combination of plain and heather styles. Now in this latest update, Lano has significantly refreshed the colour bank, leaving just four of the style’s most popular colours. With 12 brand-new tones, Fascination is ready to make a beautiful statement in modern homes. Alongside coral and acorn; shades such as ash, granite, almond, ebony and pearl ensure there is a colour to go with any interior, whether classic period property or a modern and minimalist style.

Gary Alp, sales manager, Lano, comments: “Fascination is a popular collection for good reason; a classic, go-anywhere look that offers great value and stain-resistance. In this new generation of the range, we’ve made sure the colour bank is on-point and encompasses a full suite of greys, alongside classics that have been an enduring part of Fascination for several years. What’s more, we’ve improved the yarn for a softer and denser feel, using the same pile weight that makes Fascination a versatile and cost-effective choice.” Available in four and five-metre widths, Fascination is crafted from twoply Eccelena fibre for lasting stain-resistance, fade-resistance and bleach cleanability. With a Heavy Domestic rating and 1,365g/m2 pile weight, the 1/10th gauge carpet comes in 16 plain and heather colours. T 00800 5266 5266 www.lano.com

Striking style in tile textures

The idea behind Polyflor’s new Wovon range was to provide an opportunity to explore new textures and patterns whilst still offering great functionality. The Wovon collection of interwoven vinyl tiles provides a unique and diverse selection of weave designs that come with extraordinary depth and sophisticated aesthetics to cater for projects that require contemporary styling.

The new collection consists of three tile patterns – Serene, Optics and Structure – from these architects and designers can create a spectrum of stylish decorations with each one encouraging creative placements and resulting in striking visuals. The subtle design structure of Serene co-ordinates beautifully alongside a broad range of surfaces to create a calm and balanced interior. Whilst the Structure tile combines several weaving techniques to create a three-dimensional floor design to add character and depth. Optics, inspired by the properties of light, adapts to it’s surroundings with light reflecting patterns that bring any interior environment to life. Tom Rollo, Polyflor’s Marketing Manager commented,: “Wovon offers both the hard wearing, low maintenance properties of a heavy commercial vinyl construction and a stylish, tactile design perfect for specification in busy interior environments.” Available in a range of 18 unique design options in 500mm x 500mm tile format, the Wovon collection is a sustainable product choice which is 100% recyclable, Phthalate free and low VOC. NEWS 4G signals strong sales

Adored across the country, StainFree by Abingdon Flooring has become one of the nation’s most-loved carpet ranges. Now, with the manufacturer revealing the fourth-generation of the carpet, the passion for this classic style is set to be renewed.

Abingdon Flooring has developed a new PP yarn that has a finer quality, now in a 1/10th gauge over the previous generation’s 1/8th gauge. Giving StainFree Twist and StainFree Ultra a softer feel that’s immediately noticeable beneath fingers and toes, the new yarn trades nothing in terms of performance. Stain-resistant and safe to clean with diluted bleach. A new fleece backing that doesn’t scuff skirting boards and makes the carpet easier to handle is also part of the upgrade. Cleverly, the fleece back also heightens the perception of softness for feeler samples on displays and lecterns. And in 2, 2.5, 4 and 5m options, there is a StainFree Twist or StainFree Ultra in a width perfect for any room. As well as improvements to the feel and fit of the carpets, the fourth generation StainFree Twist and StainFree Ultra are available in a refreshed palette of 20 contemporary colours. Martin Peace, sales director, Abingdon Flooring. “For nearly 30 years, the StainFree name has defined polypropylene carpet, so any change to styles under the brand must be considered carefully. That’s why we’ve improved the style, made fitting easier and reduced the price; all while keeping the same StainFree for Life Promise and 10-year wear warranty.” T 01274 655662 www.abingdonflooring.co.uk

Pure colour with care

The launch of the Polysafe Verona Pure Colours collection builds on the success of the Original Polysafe Verona colour palette and features a new and contemporary decoration in a selection of 18 tonal hues, perfectly suited for installation within a wide range of commercial and residential environments to ensure the underfoot safety of occupants. Developed with the requirements of those living with dementia in mind, the Polysafe Verona Pure Colours collection features a specially engineered emboss and unique matt finish, using complementary coloured quartz in the vinyl to harmonise with the base shade and generate enhanced sustainable slip resistance of 45+ (slider 96). The result is an aesthetically appealing safety floor that looks like a smooth vinyl with virtually ‘invisible’ slip resistance once laid on the floor. Polyflor worked with the Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) at the University of Stirling to assess the suitability of the Pure Colours collection for specification in dementia friendly environments. Tom Rollo, Marketing Manager at Polyflor comments: “The Pure Colours collection adds a contemporary new design to the well-established Polysafe Verona range. From the outset the goal was to develop a product that responded to the market demands for a plain and tonal decoration and also for the collection to be well suited to specification within dementia friendly design schemes. “ Polysafe Verona features the renowned Polysafe polyurethane reinforcement (PUR) to facilitate even easier cleaning, whilst providing optimum appearance and colour retention as well as improved soil release. Using a micro mop maintenance regime, chemical usage, energy intensive cleaning and water consumption are significantly reduced and life cycle maintenance costs of up to 60% are achievable when compared to untreated safety flooring. NEWS Seamless to success

Vinyl flooring is a popular choice in commercial and public buildings for its durability and ease of maintenance and with Itec Contract Floors, made by IVC, the floor’s impressive performance characteristics can be added to with a more authentic natural effect, or a seamless looking architectural finish.

No matter what the look, Itec Contract Floors can be installed with an imperceptible join using Invisiweld. Unlike conventional hot weld that uses a rod of colour-matched material, Invisiweld uses a chemical bond to fuse sheets together. Not only are the seams less visible this way, but also stronger. With wood effects, such as those in the Concept Woods collection, Invisiweld makes for a more natural looking floor, an effect particularly pronounced with the range’s new T-emboss technology for a more matt surface. In architectural looks found in collections like Concept Ultimate, Invisiweld gives a more uniform appearance and a seamless look right across the floor. In Silento Timber this unified look can also help to combat noise. Thanks to a specially developed acoustic backing, Silento Timber can reduce impact sound by up to 18dB. Recently updated to share the same T-emboss technology found on Concept Woods, the range features sharper clarity and a matt look for improved authenticity. With Hyperguard+, all floors in the Itec collection are protected from dirt and stains and remain easy to care throughout their lifetime without any specialist care. The permanent polyurethane treatment makes floors such as Concept Woods and Silento Timber ideal in buildings where specialist cleaning schedules and intensive maintenance are not regularly achievable. Plain sailing in Swansea

Products from F. Ball have been used to install floorcoverings in a newly-built waterside residential development at Swansea Marina.

Contractors from Puma Floors Ltd., in Cardiff, used F. Ball’s Stopgap 1200 Pro highperformance levelling compound, Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive and Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive adhesive to install a combination of LVT and vinyl sheet floorcoverings throughout the three-storey building, including in its communal areas and 50 one and two-bedroom apartments. F. Ball’s Stopgap 1200 Pro high-performace levelling compound was used to create a smooth base ready for the receipt of floorcoverings on all levels of the development. Stopgap 1200 Pro is a two-component levelling compound, developed for use over old adhesive residues, and is also fast-drying; applied at a thickness of 2-5mm, it will be dry enough to receive floorcoverings from as little as four hours. Contractors then used F. Ball’s Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive to install oak-effect Polyfloor vinyl sheet in the kitchens and bathrooms of each of the property’s apartments and to install purple Polyfloor vinyl sheet floorcoverings in the building’s corridors, stairways and other communal areas. Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive was used to install Polyfloor wood-effect vinyl planks in the living areas of each of the apartments. Commenting on the project, Grant Cox, operations director at Puma Floors Ltd., said: “It was a big project, and we had to work quickly. The speed with which we could work, thanks to the products we were using, meant that we were always on top of things.” T 01538 361633 www.f-ball.co.uk 28 October 2018

BUSINESS NEWS Condor acquires Edel Telenzo

The Dutch Edel Group including the UK-based Telenzo Carpets business is being acquired by one of Europe’s largest floorcovering manufacturers, The Condor Group. “The product ranges of Edel Carpets and Telenzo Carpets are a valuable addition to the existing product range of Condor Group,” says the Condor company announcement. “The transaction will result in synergy gains due to economies of scale as well as in an improvement of the joint competitive position.” Condor has committed to continuing the activities of Edel Carpets. “The strategic focus of Edel Carpets on marketing and producing high-quality carpeting for the middle and high price segment will be further supported and implemented after the takeover,” it said. Edel Carpets designs, produces and sells high-quality wall-to-wall carpeting and rugs, for the most part made from wool and polyamide. The products are supplied under own labels (Edel Carpets and Telenzo Carpets) and private labels across Europe and beyond. Condor makes more than 115m square meters of textile flooring every year and is active across the same territories as Edel and so hopes for synergies between the two operations. Condor have been expanding and added Timzo to its operation though an acqusition in 2017. The Edel Group is celebrating its 100-year anniversary since E de Langes (Edel) started to produce rush matting in Genemuiden in Northern Holland. www.condor-group.eu

We’ve already extended our capabilities in 2018 with two new companies. And we are planning to bolster this with more acquisitions and investments in production facilities and partnerships to enhance support both for our direct customer base through our own brands, and the private label customers we serve.” Beaulieu Flooring Solutions, a division of the Beaulieu International Group (B.I.G.), is a global operation of 3,300 employees that develops and manufactures an extensive range of flooring solutions from its 17 factory locations. With the June 2018 acquisitions of Beaulieu Australia and Beaulieu Canada, the division achieved a combined turnover of €1 billion in 2017. Products include cushion vinyl, vinyl planks and tiles, parquet, laminate, carpet, needle felt, artificial grass, wall panels and mats. “Approximately €300 million of the €500 million invested in the Beaulieu International Group during the last 5 years was in flooring,” comments James. “That gives an indication of our commitment to growing with this industry, staying on top of global trends, and embracing the new technologies required for innovative finishes such as the emerging concrete look.” www.bintg.com

Bottle to beat waste System LVT meets demand

F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has launched its ‘System LVT’ range comprising products the company recommends using in combination to deliver optimum results when installing luxury vinyl tiles (LVTs), which continue to grow in popularity.

The System LVT range is made up of Stopgap 300 HD heavy-duty floor levelling compound, Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive, Stopgap P131 general-purpose primer and the newly introduced Stopgap P141 primer for non-absorbent surfaces. Stopgap P131 is F. Ball’s general purpose primer. It promotes adhesion and prevents unacceptably rapid drying of adhesives and levelling compounds applied to absorbent surfaces. Launched earlier this year, Stopgap P141 is a fast-drying acrylic primer that has been specially formulated to promote adhesion between Stopgap levelling compounds and non-absorbent subfloors. It is recommended for use where levelling compounds will be applied at thicknesses above 20mm as it’s better able to withstand the increased stresses that these exert when drying. It dries within 15 minutes and is pigmented yellow to aid coverage uniformity. Contractors should ensure a perfectly smooth and durable base ahead of installing LVTs. For this reason, F. Ball recommends its Stopgap 300 HD levelling compound as part of its System LVT range – for its fast-drying and excellent self-levelling properties. Styccobond F46 is a solvent-free, pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive that dries to a permanent tack. It is used for securing vinyl tiles and planks to Stopgap levelling compounds, concrete and sand/cement screeds, plywood, flooring grade chipboard and hardboard. It is designed to give strong initial tack and high bond strength, which increases as it is trafficked. It also has an extended open time, reducing the risk of late placement and making it ideal for installing more complex designs and patterns. Styccobond F46 is also specially formulated to reduce the incidence of trowel serrations shadowing through thin vinyl floorcoverings. T 01538 361633 www.f-ball.co.uk

Leading manufacturer of flooring adhesives and subfloor preparation products, F. Ball and Co. Ltd is replacing its traditional 5L plastic bottles, used for gauging liquids, tackifiers and primers, with 100% recyclable versions that are themselves made from recycled plastic.

The move to the recycled packaging is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to reducing packaging waste and, specifically, plastic waste due to the adverse effect it can have on wildlife. The new bottles, which are manufactured from 95-98% recycled high density polyethylene (rHDPE), can be disposed of through the normal waste disposal chain to be recycled. The material can be recycled up to ten times. In making the switch to recycled plastic, F. Ball will remove over 100 tonnes of virgin plastic material from the waste stream every year. F. Ball Managing Director Mark Hughes said: “Changing product packaging, especially when it’s become known as a symbol of high quality, is never something you do lightly, but the benefits of making the change are obvious. We’ve discussed the proposed change with contractors and wholesalers and the overwhelming consensus is that reducing plastic packaging waste is something that everybody instinctively knows is the right thing to do.” The new recycled packaging will start to appear in wholesalers from October onwards. Heritage Wilton at the Willow Grosvenor Wilton has partnered with the Mackintosh at the Willow in Glasgow, to restore and preserve the building to its former glory, as commissioned by Catherine Cranston in 1903.

The historic location was saved by 'The Willow Tea Rooms Trust', a registered charity, in 2014, which has worked tirelessly to raise funds. The partnership saw British, independent carpet manufacturers, Grosvenor Wilton, successfully recreate Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s concept, originally featured in the Willow Tea Rooms Building. The process saw Grosvenor Wilton collaborate with Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society Council Member, Pamela Robertson, and prominent artist and art historian, Jo Hormuth, to create a design and colour that truthfully replicated Mackintosh’s vision.

Mackintosh at the Willow

Ground Floor Runner Design at Grosvenor Wilton

Charles Annable, Managing Director, Grosvenor Wilton commented: “It was a pleasure to be part of the restoration of this historical building and recreate Mackintosh’s vision for the Tea Room. We pride ourselves on our work with historians and so it was an honour to be selected to collaborate so closely with the charity to rejuvenate and preserve a building that is so significant to Scottish design heritage. To have the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay officially launch the Tea Room is a wonderful way to complete the project, enabling future generations to enjoy for years to come.” Celia Sinclair, Chair of The Willow Tea Rooms Trust said: “It has been a pleasure to work with Grosvenor Wilton on this project. With limited information regarding the pattern of the carpet and working with our own experts, they have recreated the carpets to the Mackintosh designs.” T +44 (0) 1562 701456 32 October 2018

HarrogateReview 16-18 SEPTEMBER 2018 • HARROGATE

Autumn expectations to boost business “Autumn can't come soon enough for retail” said Helen Dickinson of the British Retail Consortium last month and the flooring trade at Harrogate heartily agreed – after the universally flat-to-worse period of summer trading, and before the Brexit uncertainties of 2019, retailers need the Q4 selling season to be a good one.

“This year's show seemed to be a little more diverse and interesting,"

And the signs are encouraging – with most flooring people positive about the way orders have picked up in September and optimistic that business is building strongly this autumn. So the mood in the halls at the Flooring Show was more business-like than booming, more efficient than excited, but with an undercurrent of confidence that there were deals to be done and more consumers were starting to invest in their homes now that the barbecues have been put away. This Harrogate show was the first organised by new owners Ocean Media and while some familiar exhibitors were missing, Ocean worked hard to add new faces to both the exhibitor and visitor lists and there was something of a fresh feel to the atmosphere which many commentators regarded as healthy.

“It has been a productive show with a good return on our investment.”

“This year's show seemed to be a little more diverse and interesting,” said Richard Moore of ACG. "It had a more independent feel and we saw a good quality of visitors. Phil Harley at Victoria agreed: “The quality was definitely there and it has been a productive show with a good return on our investment.” Abingdon said they had had the best rolls sales ever at the event while Furlong said visitors had been queueing up to get on their stand despite higher staffing levels than last year. It is fair to say that there were less new product launches at this year's show compared to some previous occasions – indicative of the caution amongst manufacturers who, like many consumers, are more inclined to hold back during the political and economic uncertainty but there was plenty to interest visitors.

“The mood in the halls was more business-like than booming, but with an undercurrent of confidence that there were deals to be done.”

And many great new ideas were unveiled at the event across the industry, as testified by the take-up of the new Flooring Innovation Awards whose stars were seen to adorn many of the exhibitors’ presentations. The November edition of The Stocklists, will be looking more closely at some of the current trends but a snapshot of Harrogate 2018 is that the renaissance of wool is reclaiming some lost market share; polyester is making more headlines than polypropylene; and LVT is enjoying sustained investment in the product development strategies of many suppliers.

Abingdon Flooring

Original and better!

Abingdon can justifiably revel in the phrase “original and best” as they shaped the future of the industry 30 years ago with the launch of Stainfree Twist – the first bleach cleanable polypropylene carpet. But now it is “original and better”!! Harrogate played host to a new incarnation of Stainfree Twist with new credentials as 36oz 1/10gauge high performance carpet with 20 new colours, a soft-touch fleece backing and a sister product Stainfree Twist Ultra adding weight to the offer at 46oz. Abingdon's Martin Peace was in at the beginning: “This is genuinely quite a moment for me. Stainfree Twist was my first production product at the company all those years ago and here we are with the fourth major overhaul of the range and another great leap forward in quality and performance. “And now a carpet range that redefined the market still has the ability to impress retailers – I can only say we have had a bonkers reaction at the show which is a fantastic achievement,” he said. Alongside this flagship range, Abingdon has introduced New Stainfree Tweed which is another 10th gauge range with a classy faint herringbone structure to its tweed appearance making it a popular choice for that increasingly common consumer who doesn't want plain but isn't too sure about a pattern either! Abingdon MD Steve Byrne with the latest Stainfree Twist

“A carpet range that redefined the market still has the ability to impress retailers...”

Abingdon's more recent bestselling super-soft Love Story collection has also seen some significant development in keeping up with the appetite for alternative shades of grey, adding four new colours to both Lasting Romance and Deep Feelings. And a new roll line has also been added to the collection, French Kiss. The company is also responding to a resurgence in the wool market with two new ranges under its Wilton Royal brand – Royal Charter at 40oz and Royal Charter Deluxe at 50oz, smart 80/20s in 20 colours that have been double sheared for a fine finish; and also Balmoral and Balmoral Deluxe, an affordable wool offer in multi-widths. All these ranges benefit from the soft fleece backing that has become so popular with fitters and gives a soft, natural feel that consumers appreciate. Abingdon has also added a carpet tile collection into its offer for 2018 with five new ranges across a broad sweep of specifications from polypropylene to solution dyed nylon. This collection is ideal for those retailers involved in soft contract work in the commercial and office sector and an attractive presentation folder is being produced to help market this collection to prospective clients. Victoria Carpets

Moving on up

Victoria has a real appetite for improvement right across its portfolio – aiming to give retailers products they can use to move consumers up market and up margin in today's competitive sales environment.

“We’re adding that bit extra that gives independent retailers the edge in offering affordable quality that consumers value”

This year's focus has been on increasing the desirability and performance of its man-made carpets, with an emphasis on polyester, and the future focus will develop more premium wool brands. “We have talked about building a product portfolio that is distinctively Victoria," says MD Phil Hartley. "And by that we mean adding that bit extra that gives independent retailers the edge in offering affordable quality that consumers value and can trust.” In the man-made collections, Victoria believes that polyester can deliver that extra advantage – the softness that can still perform resiliently in a deep pile carpet and which doesn't disappoint over long-term use. The company was early into this market with the launch of Shimmer, a de-lustred product that has proved to be extremely popular, alongside Celestial which has a brighter finish. Now Arcadia joins the set as a beautifully finished tenth gauge hard wearing polyester with nine on-trend greys and taupe colourways, in 4 and 5m. “Victoria has real strength in polyester and has applied this to build a comprehensive package across a range of weights and widths, in lustrous and de-lustred yarns, and in plains and heathers,” says Phil. The company also aims to develop its premium solutiondyed nylon products to assert its expertise in man-made fibres. Further development of the company's wool portfolio has started with an affordable 80/20 heather Burford Twist which will be available in 11 attractive colours from natural tones to the latest, carefully selected greys, and in four and 5m widths. Later this year, Victoria will be looking more closely at its mid to better range wool products to extend the appeal of their collection. “We work closely with the independent retailers to understand exactly what they want and have a strong sense that we can build on our reputation for sophisticated wool products that allow up selling to the more discerning consumers,” said Phil. After a year when the company has completely overhauled its logistics and manufacturing resources, Victoria is strongly promoting its U2V online portal for retailers which will allow fast access to ordering and order tracking, raising its service levels to the amongst the best in the sector.

Associated Carpet Group Protecting profits

The Associated Carpet Group is one of the U.K.'s fastest growing buying groups and its Harrogate presentation demonstrated the strong support its members get from their preferred suppliers – showcasing the latest ranges on which the group negotiates competitive pricing and rebates which are paid directly to retailers. Flexibility is key to independent retailers so members have the choice of how to mix their marketing between the suppliers’ brands and merchandising and ACG’s own label program that allows members to maximise their protection from competition. “A well-organised and attractive own label approach can make a really significant contribution to the success of a retail business in the flooring sector in protecting margins,” says Richard Moore of ACG. “We have placed a lot of emphasis on getting this right for retailers – offering some of the highest quality own label presentations in the market with the flexibility for our members to use as much or as little of this approach as suits their store,” he said. ACG has worked closely with its retailers in ongoing development of point-of-sale display and merchandising across its product ranges, creating a more professional and uniform look in-store alongside the commercial advantages of own label. Thomas Witter Here’s looking at you!

Never mind in shades of grey – the latest range from Thomas Witter is presented in black-and-white, and by Humphrey Bogart no less! All the carpets in all the towns, Casablanca is the one that Thomas Witter hope will play again and again with the emotions of consumers who are looking for an attractive, fashionable wool loop – a sector of the market whose appeal appears to be as timeless as the classic movie which the company is using to promote the range. Casablanca comes in two distinctive designs – a hobnail plus a chunkier big loop – and in 10 attractive colours. “There is a solid demand in the market for wool loop and this one has a more textured appearance than many which appeals to a lot of modern consumers,” says Vince Holden of Thomas Witter. “We have had a great reaction at the show to this range so we are hoping that sales will amount to more than a hill of beans in this crazy market!” he added. Interfloor

Eye-catching innovation Interfloor never fails to impress with its appetite to innovate and the depth of its attention to detail in every new concept it presents to the market and its stand at the Flooring Show was a showcase of its quality. The two stand-out products at this year's event were undoubtedly the all new LVT underlay system under the companies Duralay brand and the smart and shiny Premier floor edging accessories. Responding to the increasing growth of LVT across all market sectors, Interfloor have taken a careful look at the technology and techniques for laying these floors and developed a market leading package of underlay's and adhesives to ease installation and improve performance and comfort levels.

“We have concentrated on creating a premium product range presented in a top-quality point-of-sale system.” “The most eye-catching feature on the Interfloor stand at Harrogate was undoubtedly the company’s Gripperrods Premier profile”

There are three options in the Duralay LVT underlay range: a high grab option for dry-back vinyl, a low grab solution for click systems, and a multi-fit product for loose lay or as a stick down. utilising Duralay’s specially developed adhesives. These underlays are quick and easy to work with, even allowing a high degree of tolerance for poor and uneven sub-floor surfaces. This launch goes hand-in-hand with improvements in the accompanying range of LVT adhesives suitable for single-stick, doublestick and direct bonding of LVT to the subfloor.

The most eye-catching feature on the Interfloor stand at Harrogate was undoubtedly the company’s Gripperrods Premier profiles – a range of high-end trims that have been perfected to add a little luxury to any installation. “We have concentrated on creating a premium product range presented in a top-quality point-of-sale system,” says Interfloor’s Laura Ashall (pictured right). “This definitely isn't hardware! This is an interiors product that sells itself – once consumers see how good they look the opportunity is there for the retailer to add more value to a sale.” The Premier profiles are available in six options and two finishes and are presented in either a sleek display box or a distinctively different wall unit. PRO-TEK King of click

The Flooring Show marked a major event for PRO-TEK Flooring with the launch of their next-generation engineered vinyl floor PRO-TEK WPC! “We are using today's technology to create a floor of uncompromising quality,” says PRO-TEK’s Paul Heatley. “We have listened to what the market wants and invested in two years of development to deliver a unique product that will be the ‘king of click’.” At the heart of PRO-TEK’s WPC is a highly stable and 100% waterproof core but the whole construction of this product has impressive credentials. It is engineered with a phthalate-free wood plastic composition comprising six individual layers. On top is a commercial grade 0.7mm wear layer for maximum performance and at the bottom is a premium IXPE foam layer that allows the tile or plank to be laid quickly over most existing hard floor surfaces. All the materials used are 100% recyclable. At the launch, five collections offer a total of over 40 designs in wood and tile effects with four-sided bevelled edges and a complete range of matching WPC vinyl-wrapped accessories. Carpetline & AA Flooring Exclusive LVT

Carpetline has a good line in flooring other than carpets to shout about this year with the launch of their interesting new Natural Selection range of LVT. Along with its sister company AA Flooring, Carpetline is offering an exciting innovation in rigid click LVT using a limestone based construction which is substantially more rigid than many competitive products with the result that the floor has exemplary stability. “The planks are totally rigid but can still be scored and snapped for easy installation but once it is down it just will not move,” says Carpetline’s Clive Beckett. “We have had a great reaction from fitters who try it once and immediately appreciate how robust and reliable it is in use.” The new LVT offer also includes an exclusive dry-back range of 10 wood decors and four tiles which are exclusive to the company. Alongside the LVT launch, Carpetline and AA have also extended their Nature’s Own collection of engineered oak wood flooring with two highly desirable new herringbone designs to add to the total of 12 options. With a new POS stand, Nature’s Own is becoming a well recognised brand in this market which is very popular with consumers. T 01642 250500 • www.carpetlinedirect.co.uk

Cavalier Carpets Iconic appeal

Harrogate saw the eagerly awaited debut of Cavalier’s highly desirable new wool 80/20 Icon which marks a first for the flooring industry in many years as a 3-ply twist. The unique 1/8 gauge 3-ply construction not only offers enhanced performance but significantly adds to the appeal as the improved strength allows for a fashionably greater pile height and a textured finish. Icon is a plains only range in 14 colours and is made from New Zealand wool. The range won the prestigious Innovation Gold award as the winner of the Natural Carpets category, decided by the independent panel of judges as part of the the Flooring Innovation Awards 2018. “People who really love wool carpet, really love this carpet,” says Hans Lowe of Cavalier (pictured right). “Everything is right about it and best of all, we have been able to deliver a premium wool 3-ply product at the same price as a 2-ply carpet so we've had a very positive reaction from retailers.” Other wool launches at the show included Millstone, a chunky 100% wool 3-ply loop in 4 and 5m and six colours, and also posh Provenance, a 100% natural undyed wool with nine subtle linear designs as part of Cavaliers new "Couture Collection”. On the synthetic side, a star of the show was Silken, an attractive solution-dyed polyester which has been engineered with a higher fibre filament count for softness which is bleach cleanable and out-performs polypropylene in resilience and wearability. There were debuts for Stria, a fashionable woven wilton polypropylene, and for Stain-less Elements, a sister product to Cavalier’s popular ‘Distinctions’ ranges available in 10 contemporary plain shades. Westex Quality in diversity

The Westex reputation for uncompromising quality is well established over 35 years for premium wool carpet. None of that has changed, but 2018 has seen some important developments that extend those credentials into new areas. First is the launch of the new Silken Velvet Collection, an elegant, fine looking velvet manufactured in 100% polyamide 6.6 two-fold yarn. It has been specially engineered for a tighter, smoother structure which has exceptional sheen and softness but with all the performance you would expect from a premium nylon fibre. UK designed Silken Velvet is available in 40 contemporary shades across three weight qualities which, combined with multi-width, offers a lot of options. The second big launch is Westex LVT – the company's first smooth flooring which they have delivered in some style using a commercial grade 0.7 mm wear layer with a lifetime residential guarantee. There are 12 wood decors in the collection and cleverly, they are displayed in a striking new POS unit that has a double-sided boards with the “Natural” range on one side with its rustic, registered embossed textured finish, while on the other side is “Select” showing the same decor but in a smoother style. Larger plank sizes at 9 x 60” and a large repeat (one in eight planks) respond to the requirement to furnish larger rooms. There are also six stonework tiles at 12 x 24”. To bring it all together, look out for the upcoming Westex swatches which will show a range of its carpet products around an LVT centre to encourage creative coordination. Furlong Flooring

Securing sales success “We want to give retailers what they need to secure a successful sale from every consumer that comes through the door” “Of course it is essential to ensure that you have exactly the right ranges that retailers want, but is equally important to guarantee you can get them there when the retailer wants them,”

Furlong is at the heart of today's modern floorcovering industry and like the retailers it serves, the business has transformed itself from the comprehensive carpet manufacturer it was to a full offer flooring supplier with expertise across all product types. “It is widely accepted that today's retailer goes beyond a carpet shop to become a flooring specialist,” says Neil Valentine of Furlong. “We have not only kept pace but helped drive that change to give retailers what they need to secure a successful sale for every consumer that comes through the door.” And Furlong's carpet and hard flooring stands at Harrogate was busy in every sense – full of new launches and upgrades, and full of visitors. “Quite literally people have been queueing see us on the stand – we have been absolutely rammed out,” said Neil. The launch of luxury, soft-touch Eminence and Vivace were key features and the visitors were also keen to see the modern new colour set for popular Trident Heathers. Charme and Duchesse have now been launched in cut lengths at 4 and 5m and there is also a lot of new display stands ready to ship for many ranges. “Of course it is essential to ensure that you have exactly the right ranges that retailers want, but is equally important to guarantee you can get them there when the retailer wants them,” said Neil. “We have demonstrated our total commitment to achieving the highest levels of service and will continue to invest in the infrastructure that our customers can rely on.” Furlong’s smooth flooring brands Natural Solutions (see page 36) and Design Elements cushion flooring have also added to the offer to create a one-stop shop for retail flooring specialists. MasterPiece Smarter systems in the home

MasterPiece measures up to the needs of retailers for the core tasks of estimating and planning flooring installations but it sets itself apart with its latest advanced costing and selling tools that have been added in the last year. “The MasterPiece system is relied on across the country to streamline the standard tasks retailers do every day,” said Charles Pearson. “But we have been keen to develop tools that support the sales process better. These extra tools are a flexible set of features that can be configured in or out according to the retailers requirements, for example: taking customers digital signatures on screen; adding terms and conditions to invoices; adding product brochures or care instructions to a quotation, a screen to review with the customer what will be supplied/re-used for each room and who is responsible for remove and uplift, etc. Then there are some clever automations to speed the costing process and ensure all users cost up jobs consistently, for example: calculating the amount of trim or underlay according to the pack size which is sold and calculating how many tubs of adhesive are required based on room net area, automatically charging for stairway complexity, for example, per winder or bullnose. “There are lots of features like this that we can configure in to make life easier by tailoring them to the way the individual retailer works,” says Charles. “The key thing is that we have the flexibility to make the system work just the way you work, so that you can focus on the customer rather than burying yourself in the technical details of the job!” T 01737 355831 www.masterpiece-system.com

Dandy Mats and much more

Dandy by William Armes is undoubtedly the nation's favourite mat supplier and the company is keen to promote that popularity across a wider range of products that retailers can rely on for added sales. Machine washable non-slip Dandy mats in tufted polypropylene with latex backing such as the market leading Kilkis and los and the Washamat backed cotton door mats are big sellers across the UK. The company came to Harrogate for the first time in a decade to give flooring retailers the chance to win more of that business away from homeware, hardware and DIY outlets – as an impulse sale or as an add-on to any existing floor sale. New point-of-sale stands and marketing received a warm welcome from visitors and are available from October. But the William Armes portfolio is wide and the company’s presentation at the show featured strongly their growing presence in the mainstream rug market. “We have a lot to offer to retailers who want an easy, risk free range of rugs with all the reliability and profitability of our famous mats,” said sales manager Andrew McKeand. The Linea rug (pictured top right) range in natural stripes and rainbow colours is made in machine washable polypropylene as mats, area rugs and runners and has proven hugely popular since its launch two years ago. Three bright new designs were added to the portfolio at the show in lime green, pink and plum. Another interesting rug development was a display box of Splendour, plain rugs sold in association with Associated Weavers made from their hugely popular iSense polyamide yarn. Finally, the company proved its versatility in mats by showing its outdoor rubber products including a walkway that was pieced together like a jigsaw. T 01787 372988 • www.william-armes.co.uk

Karndean Designflooring

Stunning style

One of the most stunning displays in Harrogate this year was the showcase stand of Karndean Designflooring, which presented an inspirational series of roomsets and new contemporary designs. Front of house was a new range of eye-catching Victoriana designs being previewed here for launch later in the year – Montpellier in classic style, Clifton with stars and squares, geometric Lansdown and the bold, colourful approach of Mayfair.

Parked in pride of place at the Harrogate exhibition was a replica of the Karndean van originally used in the 70s

“There is a strong trend for this Victorian style as a feature floor,” says Miriam Hall, senior retail marketing executive at Karndean Designflooring. “This is a bold design collection – the colour palette and design combinations have been created to help interior decorators make a statement in their spaces. And these new ranges are really getting noticed at the show!” The other presentations on the stand showed what a busy year Karndean Designflooring has had in 2018. The company is extending its sophisticated Art Select wood collection with 14 new designs, including French oak, hickory and American chestnut. Responding to modern market trends, these designs are offered in an extra-large plank (56” x 9”) and there are more parquet options including a longer parquet format which can be used in different laying patterns such as herringbone, and also with a more matte finish. Full of charm and character, Karndean’s Art Select wood collection is recognised for featuring the most beautiful and authentic wood effects, with bevelled edges and realistic handcrafted embosses. Four new French oak designs - Prairie Oak, Glacier Oak, Mountain Oak and Savannah Oak – now offer an extended range of hues including gentle beige, cool grey and warm honey tones to blend seamlessly into décor styles from traditional country to modern industrial.

“This is a bold design collection – the colour palette and design combinations have been created to help interior decorators make a statement in their spaces.”

“Full of charm and character, Karndean’s Art Select wood collection is recognised for featuring the most beautiful and authentic wood effects,” Its popular Knight Tile collection has added 15 new contemporary designs including eight wood, three stone and four exclusive smaller plank designs. Knight Tile is a versatile, family friendly collection and the new entrants include popular light oaks, Scandi pines, contemporary greys, and a modern slate tile. Karndean Designflooring is also expanding its stylish Opus collection with six new modern and contemporary hues including limed oak wood, shuttered concrete and limestone designs. Designed for home decorators looking for a sophisticated floor in a large plank (48” x 9”) and tile (18” x 24”) design, Opus also welcomes two exclusive (18” x 3”) small ‘herringbone’ tile designs for the first time. Stairrods

Always innovating

There is always a buzz about the Stairrods stand at the Flooring Show as fitters find out what the company's latest idea is to transform flooring installations into an art form and this year was no exception.

Bendy Bull Stair Nosing It was announced at the show that Stairrods was a well deserved winner of an Innovation Gold Award for their Bendy Bull stair nosing product which took centre stage at Harrogate and still excites huge interest after its launch last year – the easy to install flexible nosings create a superb, professional result on staircases with curved edges.

“This makes even a small installation look stunning and enthusiasm for the product continues to grow and build momentum, both in the UK and increasingly in export markets – we have someone out in the US right now getting a lot of interest from installers,” says John Raine of Stairrods.

Premier Trim Inlays The newest idea on show at their stand is the range of Premier Trims Inlays which can transform the borders of LVT installations in some style. The inlay strips of 3.3 mm wide and 2.4 mm deep and come in four finishes – chrome, brushed chrome, nickel and satin nickel – and are glued into position.

“This makes even a small installation look stunning and enthusiasm for the product continues to grow and build momentum”

Premier Trim Matwell The new Premier Trim Matwell was also attracting attention following its launch earlier this year. The Matwell is a 5mm and 8mm profile that can be cut to size to accommodate any mat and is designed to simply stick down on any hard flooring surface.

Slim-D and Slim-Z Trim Stairrods says these new slim profile door bars are the narrowest in the world to create a stylish, discrete join in doorways. The Slim D profile engages with the gripper to give a solid fix to the floor, allowing the gripper to take the strain while the trim sits pretty over the top. Available in D and Z profiles, these trims are available in a full range of 10 finishes. T 01207 591176 • www.stairrods.co.uk

Kenburn Carpet Crusher Added-value environmentalism

Kenburn’s award winning carpet crushers are not just a cost-saving environmental solution, they have real consumer appeal that can add value to a retailer’s business. “We are increasingly dealing with retailers who make a commercial benefit from their zero-to-landfill policy,” says Kenburn’s Simon Wells. “These retailers are able to tell their customers that they recycle all their waste when their competitors don't and this is getting real approval in the marketplace from consumers who are becoming more conscious about environmental issues”. And for around 25 pence per square metre, recycling new and uplifted carpet and underlay waste makes financial sense as it costs less than landfill and improved sales conversion rates are guaranteed. Connecting to innovation at Domotex Preparations for Domotex 2019 (11–14 January) are well in hand, and judging by the high number of exhibitor registrations received so far, it is going to be a successful show indeed. Many of the exhibitors are currently working on the finer details of their showcases, eager to put their best foot forward when they present their product innovations in January. The keynote theme for Domotex 2019 is “Create’N’Connect” – a bold statement that puts the spotlight on the current connectivity megatrend. Connectedness is an important aspect of flooring in the sense that floors are unifying, connecting elements of room design. Floors and flooring provide the very foundation for the rooms in which we live and work. Domotex mirrors this. It is a global platform where visitors and exhibitors can meet up and – in the words of the lead theme – Create’N’Connect and ultimately spark new cooperative ventures. Among the visitors who regularly attend Domotex to keep up with the latest trends and make new contacts are two young rug dealers, Anna Wahdat and Katrin ten Eikelder. Both are women working in a traditionally male profession and both come from families in the rug trade. With their labels, On the Rugs and The Knots, they are bringing innovation and freshness to the Oriental rug business and successfully opening up new target markets in the process. Both use the Internet and social media a lot more than most traditional sellers of carpets, and both are more intuitive in their selection of collections. Neither has a large rug showroom, preferring instead to focus on matters of quality, such as natural materials, sustainability, fair trade, and originality. For all the points they have in common, the two women have chosen very different, highly individual paths in life. Anna Wahdat grew up around carpets and rugs and developed a liking for interior design from a very young age. Her father and uncle are from Afghanistan and have had a business selling hand-knotted oriental rugs in Hamburg’s historic Speicherstadt warehouse district for nearly 40 years. As children, she and her sisters would often play among the stacks of rugs in the family’s showroom. Recycling success gets the gold

Carpet Recycling UK’s significant achievements in finding new uses for waste carpet have been recognised with an Innovation Gold Award for Landfill Diversion in the Environmental Category of the National Flooring Innovations Awards 2018.

Supported by The Stocklists magazine, the awards celebrate products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional within the flooring sector. Set up in 2008 by industry leaders, CRUK has inspired and facilitated the diversion of one million tonnes of waste carpet in its first decade – equivalent to approximately 400m2 of carpet or 57,000 football pitches. The not-for-profit association works with the supply chain to develop viable and sustainable solutions for the 400,000 tonnes of carpet waste that arise annually in the UK. CRUK has helped to increase landfill diversion of carpets from 2% to 42% (168,000 tonnes) over the last ten years. Its goal is 60% landfill diversion by 2020. “We are delighted to have been recognised by the flooring industry with this Gold Award for Environmental Innovation. It is particularly important as we celebrate our tenth year of continuous increase in landfill diversion of carpets to recycling and energy recovery,” says CRUK Director Laurance Bird. “It’s a major achievement, which has led to a million tonnes less carpet burdening landfills. Innovation is seen in all leading flooring businesses as creative teams strive for sustainability, and reap the rewards of success.” Thanking the industry for its support, Laurance adds: “All this would not have been possible without the on-going commitment and strong backing from our core funders and members. Their dedication has paid off in

Woolabilities - selling benefits Wool carpets are close to the heart of the UK consumer but with increasing competition from synthetic fibres, wool has to work a little harder to promote the “woolabilities” that make it so special. Here’s our ‘Wool Workshop’ - a selling aid to help to trade consumers up to premium products by selling the benefits of natural fibre.

SAFE

PRACTICAL Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

COMFORT Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

DURABLE

SAFETY Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason.

Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air.

Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

EASY-CARE

ECO/ENVIRONMENTAL Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production.

Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

THE BEST CARPET WOOL

COMFORT

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Shining through!

A highly successful first year for the Flooring Innovation Awards culminated in presentations at The Flooring Show Harrogate, attracting “Immense Interest” for a scheme designed to recognise the ideas, imagination and innovation that drive the industry forward.

After more than 100 submissions, details of winners in 11 categories were announced and there were special presentations to the "Innovation Gold" winners in each category at the show by the head of the independent panel of judges, Bridgette Kelly. “We were delighted that the show turned into such a celebration of innovative achievements across the industry,” said Bridgette. “I think we achieved the objective of highlighting what is really new and interesting in the flooring sector in a competitive market where it is not easy to invest in innovation but it is essential to keep moving forward.” Chris Moffatt, chairman of SMG and one of the trade judges, commented: “I was honoured to be invited to be one of the judges and from the positive comments I have received, it does appear that the award initiative attracted immense interest within the industry.” Sure enough, the stars were out in Harrogate with many of the successful exhibitors incorporating the prestigious star -shaped award into their standard displays and marketing material.

“the award initiative attracted immense interest within the industry”

The National Flooring Innovation Awards were sponsored by The Stocklists magazine and designed to be different from the usual ranked prize schemes, setting out to identify products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional. Judging took place during August and the Gold awards were decided just before The Flooring Show by the independent panel of judges which included leading industry figures: Chris Moffat of SMG; Martin West, ex-Kingsmead and now MD of William Armes; Deborah Barker, editor-in-chief of Homes & Gardens and 25 Beautiful Homes; wool campaigner Bridgette Kelly and David Spragg, editorial director of The Stocklists magazine. Flower on Flooring Top quality underlays standing the test of time This month’s feature looks at both recent innovations and long-established products that continue to prove popular with retailers and home owners.

This shows that in spite of the wide choice of underlay options available, manufacturers willing to invest in their product offering can achieve return on investment when meeting the demands of the market. Texfelt’s Springbond and Natrulay

Texfelt also explains it is taking further advantage of Kytech technology with Springbond, a unique, non-woven underlay, manufactured using a combination of recycled textile fibres and recycled plastic (PET) bottles. This is a timely innovation, with the worldwide concern over the impact of plastic waste and Springbond is also a flooring innovation winner in the environmental category of the F.I.A.

The company states both underlays are designed to provide extra comfort underfoot and are sustainable, lightweight, easy to fit, dust-free alternatives to foam, felt and rubber underlays for both the domestic and contract markets.

Mark of quality

Looking at the role of premium quality underlays, Floorwise managing director Richard Bailey suggests using these as a mark of quality:

“Feel the Difference has established itself as an underlay collection that delivers a premium touch in any installation. Whether Prestige beneath a tartan-patterned woven wilton, or Elegance underneath a luxurious grey twist, there is a quality to make you feel the difference and bring better underfoot comfort and a longer lasting carpet.

“And we’re seeing the underlay mentioned more and more on Facebook by fitters keen to show the standard of their installations, using Feel the Difference as a mark of quality.

“Feel the Difference makes it easy to upsell homeowners to a high-quality underlay. Whether they prefer the look and feel of a traditional sponge rubber waffle in Inspiration, the incredible comfort of recycled PU foam in Elegance, or the excellent support of rubber crumb and felt in Prestige.”

“This is a timely innovation, with the worldwide concern over the impact of plastic waste...” Environmental credentials

Texfelt, part of the JR Group of companies, has been manufacturing felt underlays in Yorkshire for over 25 years with a proven track record in innovation within the underlay sector.

Its recent, multi-million pound investment in a state-of-the-art Kytech manufacturing system and extensive product R&D, has resulted in two award-winning underlays, Natrulay and Springbond. These next generation products are confirmation of Texfelt’s commitment to innovation and low environmental impact, by using recycled and regenerated materials it has committed to the removal of PU foam from its product range.

Manufactured using Kytech’s Airlay Technology, Natrulay is a non-woven underlay, containing over 70% recycled natural fibres, the company states. It is 100% free from harmful materials, produces no harmful VOCs, is 100% recyclable at the end of its life and is a flooring innovation winner in the Underlay category of the National Flooring Innovation Awards (F.I.A.). 70 October 2018

BUSINESS NEWS Autumn optimism for flooring sales September appears to have started positively for retailers with some recovery in sales towards the end of August – welcome news after a summer in the doldrums during the hot months of June and July when consumers with money to burn put it on their barbecues! Household goods sales had jumped 4.5% by the end of August which Samuel Tombs from Pantheon Macroeconomics said "was powered by a huge 7.8% month-to-month jump in furniture and lighting sales”. But it looks like much of the rise was driven by online activity which rose 15% in August for carpet and flooring sales according to the latest figures from Barclaycard while High Street purchases in the same sector fell 3.3%. Reports from manufacturers interviewed by The Stocklists at The Flooring Show in September suggested momentum was building strongly for the Q4 sales season. However, commentators are worried that the national news agenda in October and November may cause many consumers to sit on their hands: “ Against a backdrop of heightened political and Brexit uncertainly, many households will be more cautious with their spending,” said Richard Lim of Retail Economics.

Victoria “trading well”

Quoted flooring group Victoria PLC has reported “good progress” over the summer with like-for-like Group revenue up by more than 3% compared to the equivalent period last year.

Tredaire’s Colours Red

Treading on air

Interfloor sales director, Gary Cowley says top-selling Tredaire, which has been on the market for over 50 years, is renowned for its comfort and adding warmth and cosiness to any room, giving an experience akin to “treading on air”. Its reputation means that many retailers recommend it for rooms where homeowners want to create a feeling of luxury, he says.

“Colours Red is a firm favourite with consumers, and when combined with Gripperrods Professional Gripper, is perfect for the top quality finish...”

“Tredaire Colours Red is our top sponge rubber underlay, giving unrivalled performance in terms of underfoot comfort, as well as heat and sound insulation. Its excellent shock absorber properties also help carpets look new for longer.

“Colours Red is a firm favourite with consumers, and when combined with Gripperrods Professional Gripper, is perfect for the top quality finish both our trade customers and their customers demand. Foot testers enhance the in-store experience for consumers, and help retailers to effectively demonstrate the benefits of Colours Red in comparison to other underlays,” Mr Cowley concludes.

The company is keen to emphasis the strength of its approach to the UK market. “Victoria is pleased to advise that its previously announced strategy to use competitive product positioning to drive volume and market share growth in the UK - where the Group has made no acquisitions since October 2016 - is delivering as planned, with like-forlike revenue growth for the period also in excess of 3%,” said Victoria’s City statement. “Furthermore, Victoria has developed a number of new product ranges across the Group to be launched during the second half of the financial year, for which there has already been positive feedback from early marketing,” it stated.

Headlam change at the top

The Headlam Group, Europe’s largest distributor of floorcoverings, is looking to recruit a new UK Operations Director following the announcement that Tony Judge was stepping down from the Board and will leave the company next March. Tony Judge has been with Headlam for 26 years and played an instrumental part in building the business alongside Tony Brewer, the former Chief Executive, who exited the Group in September 2016 after 26 years with the business. Steve Wilson, Headlam’s Chief Executive, said: “On behalf of the Board, I would like to express our appreciation to Tony for his considerable contribution over the last 26 years, and particularly during the past two years. The Board and our colleagues across the group wish him well for the future.” Headlam operates 65 companies in 16 countries and is home to many of the UK’s top flooring brands.

Mat amalgamation

The Likewise Group, headed by ex-Headlam Chief Executive Tony Brewer, has acquired major mat specialist Bruce Starke & Co Ltd adding to the Dandy mats manufacturer William Armes Ltd it acquired earlier this year. Both companies are based in Suffolk. Bruce Starke has a similar product mix to William Armes in mats, matting and rugs but with a much stronger presence in the traditional flooring sector. Likewise has said that Bruce Starke, which was founded in 1899, will continue to trade autonomously.

Flooring factsheet Luxury underfoot

from Interfloor

Duralay underlays for LVT create the perfect installation

Interfloor has developed a specialist collection of Duralay underlays and adhesives designed to make luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) even more comfortable underfoot and to ensure the tiles look good for longer. The new LVT underlays are quick to fit, easy to work with, and help to reduce the need for sub-floor preparation and damage to flooring due to uneven sub-floors. The LVT adhesives are suitable for single stick, double-stick or for directly sticking LVT to the sub-floor. Duralay LVT Multi-Fit Underlay can be fitted loose lay, single stick or double-stick depending upon installation requirements and provides increased underfoot comfort and improved noise reduction. It also provides an excellent sub-floor, masking minor surface imperfections, and helping prevent the overstraining of joints. Duralay Multi-Fit underlay is particularly suited to larger areas and commercial installations. Duralay LVT Low-Grab Underlay is a versatile solution which can be used to install ‘click system’ luxury vinyl tiles. The underlay is loose-laid over the sub-floor or existing flooring significantly reducing sub-floor preparation times and the new flooring is positioned and laid onto the underlay’s unique low grab backing, holding the tiles in position preventing movement during and after installation. Duralay LVT Dry-Back Underlay can be used to install ‘dry back’ luxury vinyl tiles. A release film is peeled back to expose the pre-applied adhesive, the new flooring is then positioned and pressed onto the underlay’s unique high grab backing. The adhesive allows an open time whereby tiles or planks can be lifted and re-positioned.

New high-end edgings for luxury installations Interfloor has introduced new premium edgings offering a top-quality addition to its existing Gripperrods range. The new Premier floor edgings are available in two modern finishes that will complement the current trends in luxury home accessories. The Premier range includes a very on-trend brushed steel nickel or an elegant bright chrome which will co-ordinate well with other home accessories, light switches and door handles to ensure a seamless finish. Both finishes are available in six specialist trims designed to provide the perfect solution for all types of flooring. For further information, please visit www.interfloor.com

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 74

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 76

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.
