Splendour of Venice From its hand-picked fabric to its shimmering twisted colours and patterns, the Splendore di Venezia rug collection from Louis de Poortere captures the elegance and essence of classic Venice. Not only has Splendore been a huge hit with audiences since its launch, it has now achieved the accolade of winning The Natural Carpets and Rugs Category in this years’ Flooring Innovation Awards. The awards identify the most new, exciting and innovative flooring available in the UK and is overseen by leaders from the design and floor industry. Describing this recent success Alan Russell, sales director UK commented: “A recognition to this standard is a significant acknowledgement to the craftsmanship, forward-thinking and expertise of the Louis de Poortere team. “The demand for natural fibres has continued to grow and our ability to combine this with style is evident in Splendore. In addition, our careful choice of colour combinations, textures and patterns create a range that meets the diversity of home styles and trends we see today.” Splendore has six designs; Dolomiti, Nuovo, Quadrini, Rombo, Laccetti and Cubetti and abstract patterned Gattopardo. Each draws inspiration from the Venetian Renaissance era where precious stones, metals and fabrics were de rigueur. The range uses a combination of gloss silver and gold yarn and the weaving process enhances the threads to create a shimmering sumptuous finish. In an 85% cotton/15% polyester Rafia blend, The Splendore di Venezia collection is presented in four standard sizes and a secondary backing gives a luxurious handle and results in a reassuringly inviting 1700g/m² weight for bliss-like comfort and enduring quality. NEWS Jump for attention With the publication of a new brochure, floorwise has revealed a brand-new look for its range of underlays, building on the iconic jumping imagery first shown with the launch of its Hyper recycled PU product range. The famous jumping people can now not only be found across a vastly expanded recycled PU underlay range, but also across the supplier’s rubber and felt carpet underlay collections. Highlighting the ability of floorwise underlays to deliver impressive comfort and longevity throughout the product spectrum and across the entire breadth of price points, the new look brings cohesiveness to floorwise‘s carpet underlay collection. “We’ve built a reputation among retailers, contractors and consumers for products that deliver comfort and longevity and we’ve always given our carpet underlay collections a distinct look,” explains Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise. “By bringing together our carpet underlays through a unified visual look, we’re making them clearly identifiable as great value, quality products from the floorwise stable.” As part of its new brochure, which now features a total of more than 50 different products, floorwise has also included all of its underlays suitable for hard floors, including brand new products designed specifically for use with LVT. Now with a wider range of Acoustica sound reducing wood, laminate and LVT underlays, as well as Thermaflow products for underfloor heating, plywood and hardboard; the new portfolio is certainly impressive. “Now everyone can find their perfect underlay in the same place,” continues Richard Bailey. “With more than 50 underlays, we believe we have one of the widest available selections from any single supplier and bringing them together into a single brochure just goes to highlight this. It also gives retailers and installers a super-handy reference point for underlay selection, with comparative guides, detailed information on the benefits of different materials, and clear and easy to understand performance benefits for each product.” T 01509 673974 www.floorwise.co.uk
Designer Dubai At the upcoming Domotex in January 2020, the keynote theme is “AtMySphere” – an expression of everything that floors and floor coverings can and do contribute to wellbeing in indoor and outdoor spaces, including environmentally friendly and health-promoting features as well as aesthetic and acoustic properties. Domotex exhibitors and their innovative products are well represented in reference projects all around the world. Renowned architects and planners use laminates, handmade carpets and natural timber floorboards, many of them first launched at Domotex, to create trend-setting interior designs that promote a sense of wellbeing. “Zabeel House Mini” is a new boutique hotel located in Dubai’s popular Al Seef quarter, which features a mix of historic and modern architecture. It was designed for the sophisticated young traveler with an interest in culture. Its interior features an eclectic mix of references to traditional Middle Eastern culture, pop art style elements and contemporary art and design. The lobby is a creative roomscape of comfortable upholstered elements of varying sizes interspersed with cushions aplenty. The floors are sumptuously adorned with used-look rugs from Belgian manufacturer Louis de Poortere. Their overlapping arrangement helps to dampen the sound levels in the lobby, which makes for a more relaxing atmosphere for the waiting guests. www.domotex.de

King of flooring Peter King remembers the time that gripper first arrived in the trade which transformed the industry and his career - 55 years later, Peter is ready for another life change and was presented with a trophy by Ball & Young at the Harrogate show to recognise his long achievement and mark his retirement. “I saw the first box of gripper arrive when I was employed as an upholsterer in the days when carpet was turned and tacked,” said Peter. “It seemed like a momentous change at the time but since then I think I have seen everything else change in the flooring trade and it has always been an interesting challenge.” Peter has worked across the industry, starting as a carpet fitter at the age of 14 before spending 12 years in retail and then repping for Goodacre and BMK. 24 years ago, he arrived at Ball & Young - “Everything was rubber then and PU was a hard sell,” he recalls. Ball & Young MD Ann Shaw (pictured below with Peter) paid tribute to Peter as “a great character who is worth his weight in gold.” T 01536 200502 www.underlay.com
Fit for the challenge Even the most experienced hardened installer can gain new skills when they take up the challenges faced at the Academy for Excellence in Flooring. With 12m2 square bays full of obstacles such as sinks, toilets, angles, stairs, curved walls and more; there are plenty of challenges to face as you conquer tests in the Master Installer programme to become a certified Quick-Step installer. “We’ve trained professionals at every skill level, from brand new recruits to battle scarred veterans and everyone has been able to learn and improve their skills,” says Lee Thompson, Academy for Excellence in Flooring. “Many time-served installers are surprised by the restrictions we place on ‘everyday’ tools such as tape measures, tapping blocks and hammers, instead employing new techniques to provide a better-quality end result. “In fact, most are truly surprised when we reveal that you can install pretty much any area, including notoriously difficult obstacles such as stairs, with nothing more than your hands, a pencil, some paper, a saw and two pieces of laminate. Of course, there is some insider knowledge that helps, but that’s only revealed to our course goers!” Response to the courses at the Academy for Excellence in Flooring has been impressive, even from experienced professionals, with one particular individual surprised at just how easy installing laminate on stairs could be, something he’d shied away from in the past. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Supporting support
New sales lead at F Ball
Ulster Carpets are overjoyed to be able to hand over a cheque for £28,246.00 to NI Children’s Hospice who provide end of life care and support for families all over Northern Ireland.
F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has appointed Darren Kenyon to the role of sales director.
Ulster Carpets and NICH have been in a partnership for the past three years. Throughout this time the employees at Ulster Carpets have raised funds through taking part in marathons, hosting bacon butty mornings, stew and dessert days. Each Christmas employees ran a raffle and vending machine promotions, which were always a great success. Nick Coburn, Ulster Carpets Group Managing Director and Deputy Chairman said, ‘We are delighted to present NI Children’s Hospice with this cheque that the employees from Ulster Carpets Ltd have raised, I know that the funding will be a tremendous help to all of the staff and services that are providing daily care for all of the children at Horizon House and in the community.’
Darren joined the company in 2002 as business development manager before progressing to the role of national sales manager in 2017. During this time, he has been responsible for managing the F. Ball UK sales team and relationships with the company’s network of over 130 distributors.
“This incredible donation from the employees of Ulster Carpets is fantastic to receive. It is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication by the team with people from right across the entire organisation involved in a range of fundraising and volunteering activities. Receiving such a significant donation is amazing and will make a big difference in our ability to care for children and young people with a life-limiting illness,” said Jonathan Lamberton, Corporate Engagement Executive for Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice.
Commenting on his appointment, Darren said: “I’m delighted that F. Ball has put its confidence in me as sales director at such an exciting time for the company. I am looking forward to helping it move forward as it maintains its strong presence in existing markets and looks to develop other areas of the business. F. Ball is a fantastic company to work for and I’m fortunate to be leading an outstanding sales and marketing team.”
In 2017/2018 NI Children’s Hospice delivered care to 337 children and provided 2,000 nights of care for children and families at Horizon House. Hospice care is free to families, however, it costs around £4 million each year to provide. With limited government funding, each year the hospice relies on the support of local community and businesses to help raise as much money as possible for this invaluable cause.
F. Ball managing director Mark Hughes added: “Darren’s track record at F. Ball and his knowledge of the professional flooring industry are attributes that will serve him well in his position as sales director. His experience and relationships acquired during his tenure as national sales manager means he will bring a new perspective to the role, while enabling continuity of the high level of service and support that our customers expect.”

Flower on Flooring Product development adds value to underlay Flooring retailers seeking valuable add-on sales have an increasing choice of underlay products to choose from, with the benefit of further improving professional floor installations. The following is an overview of the diverse ranges provided by the industry’s leading suppliers, emphasising the value these provide to both retailers and their customers. This certification sits alongside Ball & Young’s introduction of the Ultra Fresh treatment to its product range, a technology that has proven to be effective, durable, safe and fully tested for advanced microbiological performance.
Luxe says that by taking full advantage of its Not Available Online Policy, the flooring trade is now fully committed to supporting its award-winning Recycled, Pure Foam Underlay collection. It uses only the highest grade recycled foam which is reground to create a high performance pure foam with superior density to support carpets. Without being bulked up by plastic fragments or fill, the company says the end result is a consistent platform with no gaps or weak spots. Luxe is only available via its approved network of flooring distributers in the UK and Ireland. “We continue to build this network and would love to hear from forward thinking distributers who would like to join the Luxe Pure Foam Revolution. Its high performance eco friendly pure foam will ensure carpets last up to 25% longer when fitted,” the company concludes. Anglo Recycling was founded in 1939 by a German Jew on the run from the Nazis. It continues to thrive as an environmentally-friendly business.
Cybergold UK explains it has been manufacturing rug anti-slip products for over 20 years and has established market leading products using its patented Non-Slip Grip technology. “Unlike some of our competitors underlay who have a ‘one for all’ product, we have comprehensively looked at how underlay performs with many different hard floors, carpets and rugs and through extensive development, established a complete range of high performance underlays which give outstanding results whatever the situation,” says the company. “So you know that if you choose one of our products it will give you the best results and that’s guaranteed!” “Anyone buying a new carpet, rug or hard floor today will need an underlay for an entrance mat or rug somewhere in the house, it doesn’t matter if you don’t sell rugs. We are here to help you stock the right quality products for your customers,” says Cybergold UK.

Anglo Recycling’s 80th anniversary It recycles virgin carpet, jute sacking and clothing - saving increasingly large amounts from being sent to landfill - and reprocesses these to create its range of underlay products, all of which are manufactured at its factory in the picturesque Rossendale Valley in Lancashire. In addition to its range of underlays, the company has diversified to become a specialist supplier of additional flooring products and has further extended this to become a provider of items ranging from horticultural plants and herbs and items for the specialist acoustics sector. Managing Director Andy Hall serves as the chair of Carpet Recycling UK. Currently celebrating its 80th anniversary, the company’s long history and innovative outlook is continuing to provide sustainable benefits for staff, clients and the business itself.

The Durafit System from Interfloor
Technology and sustainability have driven innovation in the underlay sector and installers now have a sophisticated portfolio of products to choose from. Interfloor says its Durafit System was the first double-stick system for carpet and underlay and has been used successfully for carpet installations worldwide for over 35 years. It is the trusted system for heavy-wear contract installations, giving increased carpet life, improved appearance retention, and greater dimensional stability thanks to an exclusive woven polypropylene backing. “Durafit is considered by many carpet manufacturers and contractors as the leading contract flooring underlay system. It’s been fully proven with sales to date of over 24m sq m, and is now the de facto standard for stick-down systems,” says Interfloor sales director Gary Cowley. Duralay Durafit 500 and Duralay Durafit 650 are recognised for quality, value, reliability, strength, comfort and endurance. This high-density rubber crumb content helps prevent carpet rucking, furniture indentation and helps carpets look and feel better underfoot for longer. Both conform to BS: 5808: 1991 and US standards. Axminster says its Axfelt triple-layer underlay is “the perfect sustainable foundation for your new carpet.” “This luxury underlay, with a wool felt topping, recycled weaving materials middle layer and a recycled tyre bottom layer offers excellent environmental and insulation credentials. It will also help to retain the appearance and extend the life of the carpet,” the company continues.” Axfelt underlay is manufactured inhouse and goes through rigorous testing, to ensure the best performance. The underlay is made from 90% recycled materials and is a perfect partner for Axminster’s sustainably-sourced wool carpets. Floorwise managing director Richard Bailey says: “With over 50 different underlays, we’re ready to help retailers and their customers with almost any requirement. “From budget-friendly PU underlays that bring great performance and consistent quality for the pound, through to recycled felt for use under traditional woven carpets; our range delivers comfort and longevity. “We’re also ready to help with specialist solutions with our Acoustica and Whisper sound-reducing underlays for wood, laminate and LVT, as well as Thermaflow products designed for use with underfloor heating systems. There’s also plywood and hardwood for a range that can deliver retailers problem-solving underlays with the great value and quality that’s synonymous with the Floorwise name,” says Mr Bailey. from The Stocklists
Floorwise offers choice
Described as a revolutionary carpet underlay, SpringBond is made from recycled PET plastic bottles (over 180 per roll) and other single use plastics, offering maximum performance with minimum environmental impact. An alternative to PU foam, SpringBond is a cleaner, greener choice and improves household air pollution. The product uses “virtual spring technology” – an eco-engineered Z-shaped structure creates natural bounce back. It is made from 85% recycled fibres and is 100% recyclable after use and contains no harmful VOC content. Other benefits include sound proofing, with industry leading acoustic properties up to 57db – tested to ISO 140; excellent thermal insulation up to 2.3 tog – tested to BS 4745; and it is lightweight, easy-fit and dustfree (ideal for people with asthma and/or allergies). NMC says its Noma floor performance underlay provides comfort and protection for floors by offering high performance, innovative, smart solutions which provide long lasting protection for parquet, laminate, vinyl and designer flooring. “Our product portfolio covers the demands of any substrate delivering long lasting and complete functionality for the entire flooring system,” it explains. “Innovative technologies make it much easier for you to lay your Noma floor, the easy cut printed grid feature enables you to trim the underlay easily and accurately to size. Along with the easy lay fanfold panel system which enables you to fit the underlay easily, quickly and absolutely level. “Our TwinFoam TM technology combines the benefits of light, flexible, stable tough underlays for optimum sound insulation and the very best load capacity,” NMC concludes. THE FLOORING SHOW 15-17 SEPTEMBER 2019 HARROGATE
Harrogate puts hope in the heart of the flooring industry Busy show boosts moral for the Autumn sales season After a flat summer, Harrogate put the buzz back into the flooring trade with a positive performance that raised morale, sending retailers into the autumn sales season with hope in their heart. “I think this has been one of the best shows of recent years. Nice and busy and with a great atmosphere among visitors and a more confident sentiment overall. The organisers have done well,” said Martin Peace of Abingdon.
Richard Moore of buying group ACG agreed: “Support for the show has been very impressive this year with an upbeat atmosphere that is very good for the morale of the industry.” The Flooring Show continues to improve with a well presented event and excellent pre-marketing that generates a quality audience that filled the halls better than ever across the three days of the event.
The timing of the event works well for the industry to re-focus for the pre-Christmas trading push. “Harrogate continues to generate a buzz in the market at exactly the right time of year as we go into the sales season and the sentiment has been very positive at the show this year,” added David Cormack of Cormar. And the event is a good antidote to the challenges of consumer confidence in the wider economic environment. “Everyone is trying very hard in a difficult market where the political situation continues to undermine confidence – I think everybody would like the uncertainty to end. But business is good considering what is going on and the trade is in good health,” said David Cormack. Manufacturers and suppliers rose to the occasion too with increased investment in stand presentation including impressive new designs in some of the flagship exhibitors such as Furlong Flooring, Abingdon, Lifestyle, Hugh Mackay, Victoria and Distinctive Flooring. Harrogate is always a great time to take stock of the latest direction in flooring trends in the market and in The Stocklists next month we will be looking at each of the sectors in more detail. The key snapshots for this month from the show include the rapid rise of rigid stone plastic composite (SPC) planks and tiles which are taking the LVT market by storm alongside a range of other increasingly environmentally friendly approaches in this sector which are challenging both conventional LVT and, indeed, the laminates market. For the carpet makers, it is all about quality with a focus on better performance and finer finishes across both the man-made and natural sectors. These are encouraging trends in a tight market where traditionally the flooring industry has been inclined to race to the bottom in terms of pricing. So while product development has been restrained during 2019 so far, the new ranges and collections that have been launched are designed to help retailers make a better sale from the limited amount of consumers that are still buying big-ticket items at the moment for their homes.
Read our first reports from the show on pages 41– 49. Next month we’ll have many more reports plus our trends review, based on the latest launches and comment from industry leaders.
FINAL OF THE FITTEST The Carpet Fitter of the Year competition was as closely fought as ever this year and our congratulations go to Dan Jones from Telford, an NICF master fitter since 1991, who picked up first prize. Cormar Carpets
Leading from the front Cormar continues to reinforce its credentials as the UK’s market leader by delivering new developments across the board in both products and service that retailers can rely on to grow their business. The company’s showcase at Harrogate included the presentation of the highly regarded new wool loop Southwold, the launch of Primo Naturals to build on the success of its Easy Clean collection and the latest enhancements to Cormar’s popular customer portal at the core of its exemplary service performance. Southwold was first seen in the summer and has been well received as a top-quality wool loop option in a popular textured style with a contemporary level option. The choice of 100% New Zealand wool for its construction has given the designers the opportunity to offer a range of clean, bright shades in tonal greys and neutrals. A thoroughly modern carpet.
The very latest carpet from Cormar which debuted at Harrogate was Primo Naturals, a valuable addition to Cormar’s bleach cleanable polypropylene collection.

Sitting alongside the plains and heathered options in this collection, Primo Naturals (pictured above and left) extends the choice with a flecked or stippled ‘Berber’ style in 13 colours with some bold contrast designs alongside more subtle, muted combinations. “This range builds on the success of the Primo family in a distinctive and stylish way,” said David Cormack of Cormar. “This is a very natural looking carpet with all the performance consumers are looking for at a great value price.” T 01204 881234 • www.cormarcarpets.co.uk
Online, Cormar is the most searched-for carpet manufacturing brand in the UK. It also enjoys a five-star rating on Trustpilot with an industry-best 4.7 out of 5.
REAL-TIME RELIABILITY
Investment and innovation in technology sets Cormar apart in meeting retailers demands for reliability and service. So Cormar were at Harrogate promoting their market leading trade portal. Over 40% of Cormar’s orders are placed online through the trade portal and is expected to increase further over the next 12 months. “We have worked hard to make ordering as easy as possible for retailers, wherever and whenever they want to do it,” said Cormar marketing manager, Jason Steer. “Everything is in one place – accessible in-store, on-site or at home so that retailers can work the way they want to.”

OneFlor Europe
Impressive introduction OneFlor Europe made an impressive introduction at their first-ever Harrogate event, showcasing a flagship product with excellent environmental credentials that has just won a Flooring Innovation Award. AlterOne 55 is a smart selection of seven planks and three tiles which have a non-PVC construction and are also free of plasticisers, phthalates, halogens and heavy metals. “It is great to bring the industry something that is really new,” says Jay Taylor, of OneFlor Europe – an operation that is well established across the continent but is making its debut in the UK market. “You often hear the phrase – ‘it’s about time someone did something about this’ - especially in the debate about plastics. Well now you can – and this product gives retailers a new story to tell to increasingly environmentally conscious consumers,” says Jay. OneFlor Europe is also the lead with the emergence of SPC flooring - a stone plastic composite that is challenging traditional LVT based on its extremely durable and rigid core. In its ECO 30 and 55 and Solide 30 + 55 ranges, the company is offering exclusive designs in click and dryback. T +32 56 41 06 04 • www.oneflor-europe.com
ACG
A people business to improve profit The ACG buying group puts its membership at the heart of its operation and is seeing growing success based on the reputation it has established in the sector. “We are in a healthy position in the market with more and more people recommending ACG,” said Richard Moore. “Flooring is very much a people business and we have found there is an infectious enthusiasm among retailers for our type of buying group.” As a result, ACG is putting an emphasis on encouraging potential new joiners to talk to their existing members to get a first-hand account of the advantages and attractions of being part of the group. ACG member Laura Bellamy is featured in the group’s promotions and made a personal appearance at the show (see left) to speak for herself. ACG lets its members deal direct with suppliers on preferential, prenegotiated terms, with rebates paid directly to the members to ensure their independence. Cavalier Carpets
Plug and play and promote Cavalier Carpets has locked onto a clever concept to stop those pattern books piling up on the floor, dangling on ‘hat-stands’ or lurching over lecterns – switch on to the new Swatch Wall! Now Cavalier will be fitting its sample swatches with a specially designed locking plug (see right) that slots into a set of sockets in an attractively-designed wall display that complements the company’s existing sleek, white metal POS displays. The system can work as a stand-alone display or above lecterns. “Pattern books should not become a problem in store, they should be a promotion that is both attractive and easily accessible,” says Hans Lowe of Cavalier (pictured left). The company also introduced its very latest polyester microfibre range called Plush, offering additional performance alongside its super-soft credentials in eight colours. Cavalier also showed a major recolouring of many of its flagship ranges with Architect Twist – winner of a Flooring Innovation Award in the natural carpet category – which has gained nine new colours, Guidhall an extra five and another six new shades in the luxury Cartouche Velvet. SMG
In-store presentation innovation Not content with winning one award for its stylish new point-of-sale systems for carpets and LVT, the SMG buying group revealed further new developments at the Harrogate show to enhance its members’ in-store presentation. The attractive wall and lectern displays created for SMG’s exclusive new “Pure” brand won the point-of-sale Gold trophy from the expert panel of judges in the Flooring Innovation Awards. “We really appreciated that recognition after all the hard work that has gone into developing this system with our members and it has been a real success,” said SMG head of operations Mike Reid. Now two new elements take the story a stage further. An intriguing “Feature Table” is a glass topped island unit designed to promote a conversation around flooring in the store. A selection of compartments under the glass can house different fibre types, yarns, carpet constructions and LVT styles – all of which can be customised to the retailer’s preference. Samples can be stored within the unit. A major new wall presentation has also been created to feature SMG’s distinctive curtain and cushion collection. The group has been working with leading fabrics company Ena Shaw for 20 years but has now given their products greater prominence in an own label display that provides additional sell-on opportunities for retailers. Abingdon Flooring
Staging a purrfect performance
IN-STORE EXCELLENCE
Abingdon has been focusing on the retail experience to capitalise on the strength of their brand in the High Street and Harrogate was the first opportunity for visitors to see the new “shop in a shop” retail solutions. The showcase presentation was the Gold concept, a seriously impressive display package which not only includes 10 wall units and six lecterns but adds to the professionalism with two large format wall graphics and a carpet for the floor up to 12m². The imagination behind the approach impressed the judges of the Flooring Innovation Awards, making the concept a winner in the point-of-sale category. The overall value of these components is approaching £4,000 but Abingdon’s package price to retailers is a straight £1,000.
“ Around the industry there is a lot of soft carpet that will not last, but here we have engineered a top quality product with a lot of twist pile in the mix that is built for performance.” “Cats” was showing in the West End of Harrogate as Abingdon staged a dramatic production for the debut of its super soft Sophisticat twist pile to rave reviews. “Sophisticat is the star of the show for us,” said Martin Peace of Abingdon. “Around the industry there is a lot of soft carpet that will not last but here we have engineered a top quality product with a lot of twist pile in the mix that is built for performance.” But the claim is underwritten by Abingdon’s “Stainfree for Life” guarantee and a 10-year where warranty – “so this cat has more than nine lives,” joked Martin. Available in 16 colours, Sophisticat includes some bolder shades in the “goes with grey” category such as mustard and red along with a strong blue that is becoming an increasingly popular selection with consumers. “Everyone else is playing it safe but we still think retailers like colour and we are prepared to offer it,” he said. Sophisticat also represents key moves towards enhanced quality for Abingdon, incorporating a soft backing fleece which is popular with both fitters and consumers – minimising damage during installation and providing a pleasant feel on the lectern in store - and also as a 1/10 gauge product for a more sophisticated finish. Encouraging a further trade up, Abingdon also launched Maximus – a real luxury twist with heavy duty performance designed to “last forever” says the company. Available in 16 colours, Maximus includes 12 of the best selling shades from the popular Ultra collection with some new cooler blue/greys. The show also featured the arrival of the USA Collection which is positioned to be a mainstream saxony offer from the company. Available in 14 colours, USA comes in three good-better-best ranges called New York, Dallas and Miami - all with a luxury feel and fleece backing. Fells Carpets
Artisan appreciation Artisan Wilton was undoubtedly the star of the show for Fells Carpets after winning the Flooring Innovation Gold Award for design in man-made carpet which was presented at the Harrogate event. Fells has earned a reputation for its commitment to bold and distinctive pattern, setting it apart from the safe and subtle approach that makes so many carpets so similar to one another. “Strong pattern is not an easy market to conquer,” said Carl Cummings of Fells. “It is technically challenging and the designs are highly subjective. You have to persevere and go with your gut feeling in the end so it is great to get this kind of appreciation from the award judges.” Artisan Wilton combines classic scroll motifs with highly modern colour
blends and a contemporary shading background and is available in nine options. Fells first identified the approach in rug ranges that has become strong sellers in the US and adapted the design to make a stunning broadloom carpet. T 01977 662211 • www.fellscarpets.co.uk

Kenburn
Turning waste into opportunity “The momentum is with us now,” says Simon Wells of Kenburn Waste Management in recognition of the growing environmental awareness of the need to reduce the tonnes of carpet tipped in landfill. “This has been an industry issue for years but now consumers are asking retailers about how they handle their waste and therefore responsible disposal has become a marketing opportunity as much as a financially viable one,” he says.
“We hear more and more from retailers who convert extra sales from their consumer enquiries because they have a professional and ethical story to tell on disposal,” says Simon. “And consumers are now more willing to pay for the uplift and disposal if they know it is being handled responsibly.” Kenburn are market leaders in providing ‘carpet crusher’ compacting machines which bale up waste for handling through recycling and waste-to-energy networks managed by Carpet Recycling UK. The approach can drastically reduce skip costs – one major West Midlandsbased flooring business has just started saving £150K per month on disposal fees – and prepares the industry for the anticipated ban on carpet landfill in the near future. Stairrods UK
Innovating accessories in style The ideas factory that is Stairrods never fails to disappoint at Harrogate with intriguing accessories that add value and sophistication to flooring installations, but this year’s show was exceptional with the launch of Ali Trims. The expert judges of the Flooring Innovation Awards agreed, giving the product range the prestigious Gold award in its category. Ali Trims are a set of finishing products including stair nosing, end profiles and door and Z bars but with an innovative twist. “Most manufacturers make trim to match their floors. We do it the other way round, using the actual flooring to match the trim,” explains John Raine of Stairrods. The profiles are designed to accommodate thin sections of the décor of the selected flooring by peeling WPC and SPC products or planing down laminates – the company has training videos on YouTube to explain how to do this quickly and easily.
“Most manufacturers make trim to match their floors. We do it the other way round, using the actual flooring to match the trim,”
John Raine (left) is pictured receiving the Flooring Innovation Award from Bridgette Kelly, with the Stairrods team on hand to celebrate!
As a result, the installer doesn’t have to hunt down the accessories available in a particular design and compromise on what’s available, he can deploy the Ali Trims range which is available in bronze, chrome, brown and black profiles, and customise it to match the floor. “We have had an excellent response from everyone who has seen the range in action – it answers a lot of issues, saves time sourcing accessories and guarantees a great looking result with lots of scope for really interesting installations,” says John. Stairrods will be extending the approach still further – a pipe cover is already in development! – the company sees great potential for export opportunities, especially in the USA. THE ANTIDOTE TO INFERIOR IMPORTS
Stairrods continues to enjoy considerable success with their luxurious Premier Trims - a comprehensive range of profiles of uncompromising quality, available in 10 fashionable finishes from highly polished chrome to pewter, satin brass and black. “I think the industry has had enough of inferior imports, many of which look horrible to start with and do not last,” said John. “Smart trims considerably improved customer satisfaction while adding extra value to the job.”

The F. Ball Loyalty Card Scheme, which is free to join, has over 4,500 members and rewards contractors with cashback every time they purchase F. Ball products. Loyalty Card Scheme members enjoy a wide range of exclusive benefits, including competitions and access to F. Ball’s regular newsletter, F-Talk. To date, over £3.5 million has been received in cashback by Loyalty Card Scheme members. Events to mark the 10-year anniversary at this year’s Flooring Show included a celebratory dinner, with loyalty card holders attending as VIP guests, and a drinks reception at the company’s stand. F. Ball also used the show to exhibit new packaging solutions aimed at reducing the amount of plastic packaging entering the waste stream. These included its recently-launched ‘eco pouches’ for its Stopgap 400 Repair compound and Stopgap 500 Micro floor finishing compound. The new ‘eco pouches’ are fully recyclable and require significantly less plastic to produce than previous packaging. Durable and waterproof, the pouches are lighter, easier to handle and deliver extended product shelf-life. In response to feedback from the flooring trade, each product now comes in two pack sizes, offering greater choice and convenience for contractors. Commenting on his time at the show, Mark Hughes, F. Ball Managing Director, said: “This year, in particular, was about giving something back to our customers, and the event provided lots of opportunities to meet people in the industry and thank them for their continued support, including at our celebratory dinner that took place ahead of the show.” “I’d also like to thank everyone who joined us at our stand to toast ten years of the F. Shining stars!
Stars of a shining success The stars shone out in September for the winners in the Flooring Innovation Awards after an unprecedented number of entries to the scheme that recognises the ideas and initiatives that are driving the industry forward. “The extremely high standard of entries received for the 2019 Flooring Innovation Awards has been a real challenge for the judges,” said Chris Moffat of SMG who was chairman of this year’s judging panel. “The Innovation Awards initiative has certainly proved popular within all sectors of the Flooring Industry with many companies reaping the inevitable PR and promotional benefits,” he said. “It was encouraging to see so many top quality, environment friendly and diverse products being submitted.” The National Flooring Innovation Awards sets out to identify products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional in the sector. The award scheme’s star certificates and trophies have now become a highly coveted accolade which is widely recognised across the industry and adds kudos to a company’s winning product and its marketing for the year ahead.
The “star” judges line-up (l to r): Chris Moffat, Bridgette Kelly, Laurence Bird, John Hopkins, Deborah Barker and David Spragg. The awards scheme organiser Bridgette Kelly commented: “We did wonder if 2019 was going to be a thin year for innovation given the state of the market, but the record number of entries, more than 40% up on last year, and the quality of those entries proved us wrong. Flooring companies have risen to the occasion.” David Spragg of The Stocklists magazine, the scheme’s sponsor, agreed: “In a tight market, companies do not have the resources to launch a blizzard of new products so they have to be more selective and savvy about those products they do introduce.
“But while businesses are often accused of sitting on their hands instead of investing for tomorrow, these awards have proved that flooring continues to have the appetite and ability to invest in its future.” This year there were more than 140 submissions to the award scheme with more that 40 shortlisted entries receiving an Innovation Star. The independent panel of expert judges then went on to select the Innovation Gold in each category – the best of the best – to receive the ultimate award which was presented at The Flooring Show in Harrogate.

WINNERS • CATEGORY: CARPETS – NATURAL Aalya by Axminster Carpets Aalya is a new concept – a carpet made of a mixture of sheep and alpaca wool. It took two years to develop, due to the challenges of dying these completely different types of wool and this difference in the fibres gives a unique shading effect. The alpaca wool adds a softness that is previously unseen in 100% wool carpets. Southwold by Cormar Carpet Co. This is the latest wool loop pile carpet made and designed at Cormar’s mills in Lancashire using fine quality, 100% New Zealand wool, and featuring a high quality, moth resistant 2-ply yarn with a generous 30oz pile weight, which offers a clean, bright effect and soft handle.
Quintessential Twist from Hugh Mackay Carpets Quintessential Twist is a superb 3-ply satin twist carpet which has been in development for over a year to ensure the best possible finish and product. Made from quality New Zealand wool in an 80/20 mix, the range is a double sheared finish for underfoot comfort and with a colour palette that has been developed with the help of industry leading interior designers. Splendore de Venezia by Louis De Poortere This rug collection is inspired by the opulence and splendour of classical Venice.
Architect Twist from Cavalier Carpets This super-fine, 2-ply twist in seventeen new classic colours is made in Britain using the highest quality New Zealand yarns for pinpoint tuft definition. It uses a whole fleece (which equates to about 3 kilometres of yarn) per square metre, with 2 million tufts per 10 square metres.
It uses a high-gloss polyester rafia, a flat tapelike continuous yarn, to achieve a unique look, with the weaving process twisting and turning the high gloss silver and gold yarns for a dazzling, shimmering effect, mixed with cotton chenille.

Stainfree Twist and Stainfree Ultra from Abingdon Flooring Already one of the nation’s most-loved carpet ranges, now there’s a fourth-generation of the carpet with a newly developed PP yarn in a 1/10th gauge that has a finer quality, with a softer feel that trades nothing in terms of performance.
Majestik by Adore Luxury Flooring A highly versatile LVT product – it can easily be reused with its patent-pending, adhesive-infused, fabric backing – and Majestik’s self adhesive vinyl planks have no adhesive cost or delay – once the planks have been laid, the area can be used immediately.
Zoffany for Alternative Flooring by Alternative Flooring The new Boutique printed carpet is designed in collaboration with famous fabric house Zoffany, so for the first time, inspirational fabric design stories are translated into a different cloth – wall-to-wall carpet. Wild Luxury by Balta Wild Luxury is the latest collection of Imprel Opal polyamide carpets from Balta. Three styles echo the varied textures of the wilds. From the shifting sand of endless beaches in Savage Abundance’s 5/64th gauge Saxony pile, to the weathered smooth sandstone of the 1/10th gauge Natural Embrace and the flowing Pampas grass of Bold Indulgence’s 1/8th shaggy berber. Ultimate Impressions from Victoria Carpets Using Victoria’s slightly softer but resilient EasiCare PP fibre, this is a twist-pile carpet that’s not only family-friendly but indulgent and lasting too. A fine 1/10th gauge two-ply yarn, a sumptuous pile-weight, with Loc-Bac offers even more underfoot comfort and easy fitting.

SMG have always offered their members and suppliers ultimate flexibility in developing their businesses but nothing quite exemplifies this as much as their Pure branding concept. Designed to be a ‘pick‘n’mix’ option for members it gives the retailer everything they need to optimise their de-branded offer in store. The retailer can choose from a range of bespoke unitary and then choose from a basket of products which include some of the top selling ranges from the best suppliers in the industry. There is something for every retailer large or small – featuring carpet or LVT - they don’t even need to have a direct account with the supplier whose product they feature. With SMG introducing the brand new Pure Curtains offer at the Flooring Show in September, the concept is going from strength to strength.

WOOLS OF NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONING THE BENEFITS OF WOOL TO THE WORLD Telling the story of wool is one of the keys to its successful resurgence as the global fibre of choice, says Wools of New Zealand.
“British consumers are the biggest per capita consumers of wool carpets in the world so educating the retail sector there is a key focus for Wools of New Zealand.” It is with that idea in mind that Wools of New Zealand launched its new 12-part ‘wool benefits’ marketing program, re-introducing the world to what the company believes is an outstanding natural, sustainable and renewable fibre. Wools of New Zealand Executive Director Mark Shadbolt said the recently launched program had gained immediate traction. “The messages are simple, premised on the fundamentals of style, people and planet, backed by research to give front line retailers and others through the supply chain the confidence in promoting wool as a truly sustainable, naturally occurring fibre,” he said. The creativity of the approach was recognised with a flooring innovation award for marketing at this year’s National Flooring Innovation Awards at Harrogate in the UK. Mark said recognition in a key market like the UK was a great start. “British consumers are the biggest per capita consumers of wool carpets in the world so educating the retail sector there is a key focus for Wools of New Zealand. On a wider scale, there has been a significant increase in demand for certified wool and fully traceable products from brands looking for a trust mark for consumers so Wools of New Zealand wool ticks those boxes,” he said. Wools of New Zealand have long standing partnerships with many UK leading textile brands including manufacturer Ulster carpets. from The Stocklists
Andrew Gicquel, Retail Sales Manager at Ulster Carpets, said the company had worked in partnership with Wools of New Zealand for a number of years, notably to develop the popular Open Spaces Auckland, Queenstown and Wellington Stripe ranges. “It can be overwhelming for retailers to communicate the extensive range of benefits offered by wool but this marketing program has made the process both simple and effective. Combined with our own initiatives, this can only help create a better understanding of the many attributes and benefits of wool, providing retail staff and, ultimately, consumers with more confidence around selecting and buying wool-rich carpets.” Info.uk@woolsnz.com www.woolsnz.com October 2019 77

BUSINESS NEWS
NEWS Solar success for F Ball Carpet and flooring specialist, ‘Flooring by Henton’ opted for F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound and Styccobond F48 Plus high temperature grade vinyl adhesive to achieve a high quality LVT floor finish in the company’s own showroom; offering showroom visitors instant visual endorsement of the company’s workmanship and attention to detail. As well as requiring a perfectly smooth subfloor to optimise the aesthetic appearance of luxury vinyl planks, Flooring by Henton needed a vinyl adhesive that develops a high bond strength to hold the planks in place when subjected to very high temperatures, caused by solar gain through the showroom’s floor to ceiling windows.
Fast growing retail chain Tapi has shown its appetite to develop further with a £10m share placing – c £50m has now been raised from shareholders since the launch of the business in 2015 by Martin Harris, son of Carpetright founder Lord Harris of Peckham. Tapi currently has 130 stores nationwide. Retail parks continue to show some resilience in the latest footfall figures with a growth of 1% during August compared to the high street (down 1.9%) and shopping centres (down 2.2%) according to the BRC-Springboard Retail Sales Monitor. Year-on-year figures show UK retail footfall is down 1.3% overall. Consumer confidence for buying big-ticket items continues to take a hit from the headlines of political uncertainty with GfK’s Major Purchases Index dropping three points in July. “Until Brexit leaves the front pages — whenever that will be — consumers can be forgiven for feeling nervous not just about the wider economy but also about their financial situation,” said Joe Staton, client strategy director at GfK. Summer carpets imports showed nearly 2% growth despite a major slump in trading with the traditionally strong trading partner Belgium which was down 17% in the month of July. The growth came from India and China while Turkish imports nearly doubled. Year-to-date imports of carpets into the UK are 3.4% up. Shares in Carpetright rose sharply at the end of August on the news that its biggest investor Meditor was taking over Carpetright’s £40.7million revolving credit facility from previous lenders NatWest and AIB. The move was seen as a vote of confidence in the struggling retail chain and Meditor say they are in there long-term to support the business. Flooring wholesaler Kellars is growing fast with the merger into the business of two Northern distributors. MCA Floorwise of Morecambe and Floorwise (North East) of Chester-le-Street have become part of Stockport-based Kellars. “Kellars is undergoing an exciting period of growth and it’s great to be part of a group which is already now one of the largest independent flooring wholesalers in the UK,” says Andy Duce who has joined the group as a director.
The first point of action for contractors was to remove old carpet, LVT and wood floorcoverings from the 90m2 floor of the showroom. A moisture test was then conducted using a digital hygrometer, which indicated the relative humidity (RH) level of the subfloor was 55%. As the RH levels did not exceed the 75% maximum threshold, the application of a waterproof surface membrane was not required to prevent excess moisture potentially causing floor failure.
Dragon’s Den backs carpet fitter’s ‘hero’ product Manchester carpet fitter Tiernan MaCorkell has taken on the Dragons and won – securing substantial investment for an innovative tool to tackle fitting flooring around pipes. Tiernan appeared on the BBC2 Dragon’s Den show on September 8 with his pipeEasy invention and after initial reluctance from some Dragons, Sara Davies offered £41,000 for a 30% stake in the business. The pipeEasy tool, which has patents pending, is a unique surfacing measuring tool for both the DIYer and the experienced floor fitter. The simple and easy to use device allows
Contractors next applied Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound over the entire subfloor to create a perfectly smooth base for the receipt of floorcoverings. As well as being fast-drying and fast-setting, the two-component levelling compound can be used directly over old adhesive residues, without the need to prime beforehand, saving further time and meaning minimal disruption to customers during the showroom’s opening hours. The main area of the showroom has a large glass front, with the potential to cause solar gain and extreme temperatures. Therefore, F. Ball’s Styccobond F48 PLUS high temperature grade vinyl adhesive was selected to install wood-effect vinyl planks. Floorcoverings exposed to high temperatures can expand and contract significantly, which over time, can lead to tenting and gapping of vinyl planks and tiles. When cured, Styccobond F48 PLUS develops a high bond strength to hold floorcoverings firmly in place when exposed to extreme temperatures. Styccobond F48 PLUS also provides high initial grab to help prevent lateral movement of floorcoverings when placed into the adhesive, an advantage when working with vinyl tiles or planks. The adhesive is fast-drying, allowing floorcoverings to be installed in as little as five minutes after application, meaning the showroom could remain open to customers during the final installation of vinyl planks, whilst the majority of the refurbishment had been completed over a bank holiday weekend. its users to precisely cut around difficult pipework, giving a clean circular finish rather than a conventional typical square cut finish. Describing it as a “hero product”, multi-millionaire entrepreneur Sara Davies promised to drive it forward, also offering the capability to manufacture the tool more cheaply, as well as her well-proven marketing skills. “The potential for this is massive. I get it and I think it is fantastic,” she said. www.pipeeasy.com October 2019 79

Woolabilities - selling benefits Wool carpets are close to the heart of the UK consumer but with increasing competition from synthetic fibres, wool has to work a little harder to promote the “woolabilities” that make it so special. Here’s our ‘Wool Workshop’ - a selling aid to help to trade consumers up to premium products by selling the benefits of natural fibre.
SAFE
PRACTICAL Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages. COMFORT Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
DURABLE
SAFETY Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
EASY-CARE
ECO/ENVIRONMENTAL Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.
THE BEST CARPET WOOL
COMFORT
Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Wool Week 2019 - October 7-20 MAKE A DIFFERENCE - CHOOSE WOOL The annual Wool Week experiences which run over two weeks, involves the whole wool industry in events and activities, these include: fashion, carpets and interiors key industry experts, retailers, brands, tailors, designers, craft individuals and groups involved in workshops.
Weaving the Future is an exhibition of film, photography and artefacts at Salts Mill in Yorkshire
Wool Stair Art was launched by Alternative Flooring ahead of Wool Week, with design in collaboration with Margo Selby
WOOL AS A PLANET FRIENDLY FIBRE The campaign will continue its consumer education programme to highlight wool as a planet friendly fibre, and to ensure consumers are aware of its natural fibre attributes, benefits and biodegradable properties in the ocean and the land. The focus, through the Point of Sale messaging, will be to invite consumers to ‘Make A Difference – Choose Wool’ for apparel and interiors, or through the new ‘Wool is’ branding campaign for carpets to highlight wool’s natural performance properties in carpets. By the choices we make, we can all make a small difference and accumulatively this can only help the plastic issue we are facing globally.
Every year sheep produce a new fleece; making wool a natural, renewable fibre source. Wool has inherent natural biodegradable properties in the land and ocean to benefit the planet which is choking from waste plastic, man-made and micro-fibres. We can all make a difference by choosing wool to help safeguard the planet for future generations.
Ella Doran’s Fleece to Floor and Sheep to Seat concept at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The Seating fabric was created in collaboration with Camira fabrics.
The events started in Yorkshire at Salts Mill with an exhibition from Tim Smith Photography, Weaving the Future is an exhibition of film, photography and artefacts that explores how Britain’s textile industry is being reinvented for the 21st century. It demonstrates the link between our analogue and digital worlds, showing how the binary systems that once drove textile looms led to the development of computer programming. With a number of brands working on sheep to product strategy, that is seen through Wool Week product launches. Events and product launches leading up to Wool Week include a competition being run by Carpetright, styling events in store around the UK by Brora owner Victoria Stapleton, wool Stair Art launched by Alternative Flooring (above right) and collaborations with Margo Selby, Jamie Watkins and Tom Kennedy of Divine Savages, and Ella Doran with the Fleece to Floor and Sheep to Seat concept (below left) at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. There are special Wool Week screenings of the new Shaun the Sheep film Farmageddon from Aardman and special screening for patients across 6 hospital locations in the UK along with the charity Medi-cinema and Studio Canal. A short animation film has been created along with The Woolmark Company that is being used as an education platform for wool’s Super Natural Benefits.

Flooring
Factsheet Adhesive Types Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticized PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors.
ADHESIVES
SELECTION CHECKLIST
The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time: The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked. Odour: Low odour, solvent free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.
Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels.
Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.
Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive.
Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.
Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.
Strength: Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured. Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but
this criteria must be checked where appropriate. Subfloor: What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard. While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces. The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation. Special Performance: Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments. Air Quality and the Environment: The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.
The Perfect System for your Designer Floor The perfect adhesive choice for luxury vinyl tiles Choose Styccobond F46, the market leading pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive. Stopgap 300 HD, Stopgap P131 and Styccobond F46. The perfect system for simply stunning luxurious floors.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.
www.interfloor.com
Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. www.interfloor.com
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.
Benefits
Types
Poor or old underlay will...
Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Combination
Crumb
PU foam
PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.
www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk
Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.
www.underlay.com
Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.
www.luxeunderlay.com
Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Fading on Wool
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling
Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Colour matching
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.
It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Static
Sprouting
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
94
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment. THE STOCKLISTS October 2019
• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
Flattening
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
Shading
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
Pile Reversal
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
Shedding
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Indentations
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder. THE STOCKLISTS October 2019

of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions
ne of the key reasons to join a buying group is to O benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS October 2019
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.
