Introducing We’re not sure anyone expected 2020 would have turned out like this, least of all Victoria Carpets, but in the background they have been working hard on welcoming Distinctive Flooring to the family under a new division: Victoria Design Floors. After a strategic review by parent company, Victoria PLC, it was realised that the business objectives for both were the same, and that joining the two together would help strengthen their combined business proposition, providing a better product and service offering for the retailer. This exciting move has seen the joining of forces for all business operations, including sales & marketing, customer services and finance, which reside within Victoria Carpets, based in Kidderminster, Worcestershire. With a joint product portfolio, a great synergy is promised as the businesses come together to offer award-winning styles in both carpet and LVT.

James Caldwell, Sales Director for Victoria Carpets and Design Floors said “This is such an exciting time for us, over the next few months Victoria Carpets will be launching several product ranges into the market along with a new look and feel to really revive and freshen up the complete Victoria Carpets offer.”

Add into that an increased sales team and a strong LVT offer and Victoria Carpets and Design Floors really have something to shout about!

As the company enters its 125th trading year, Victoria Carpets shows no signs of slowing down as new product ranges and a fresh new look and feel continue to innovate and reinvigorate the company. Founded in Victoria Street, Kirkcaldy, Scotland in 1895 by George Anton, the business moved to Kidderminster in 1900 as this area was developing as the centre of the carpet weaving industry. Having offered employment to any staff wanting to relocate with the business, many of the work force walked the 350 miles to start a new life in the midlands. Over the years the company has metamorphosised and 2020 is no different. Having recently restructured its product offer to make it clear and simple for both the retailer and the consumer by categorising its offer into three sections; • Natureborn for all wool and wool mix products • EasiCare for its polypropylene ranges and • Luxuria, which will enter the market early next year offering their most luxurious finish to date with a 6.6 nylon velvet. 22

Speaking to James he said ‘We have recently launched a new Natureborn range, Frontier, into the market. 14 colours comprising of seven plain and seven linear 10th gauge looped carpets. This has been launched to offer an entry price point loop carpet, but it looks fantastic for the money. They have also just launched EasiCare Heartland Heathers. This is an addition to the EasiCare Heartlands family, which is a collection of 12 subtle heather shades in a 10th gauge construction.

Traditionalistas + fashionistas Why wood decors and parquet appeal to so many consumers... pages 44-45

Filip Poelman, sales director, Balta Group, explains, “Throughout lockdown we largely kept to our product development cycle. We carried on working on our new styles, making sure that we would be ready to offer the very latest looks in the busy autumn sales period. As the UK is still experiencing significant pent-up demand from consumers, this has allowed our retail partners to be able to respond to demand with family friendly carpets that are right on trend.” With StainSafe Provincetown, Balta presents a classic 1/8th gauge twist pile style with an enduring two-ply yarn that makes it ideal for family homes. In four and five-metre widths and available in 12 timeless colours, from classic ruby through to contemporary greys, the carpet is a great all-rounder. The Leonis collection is one of Balta’s key brands and with Newport it continues to provide families with really accessible soft carpet styles that can withstand spills and stay looking great. A 1/8th Saxony style, Newport provides a luxury look and an even more luxurious feel thanks to its heavyweight pile in four and five-metre widths and a choice of 12 on-trend colours.

FLOORINGNEWS Wilton innovation at LDP There’s no doubt that traditional wool-rich woven carpets bring exceptional quality, but today’s homeowners also demand flexibility and adaptability from their products. Step forward the brand-new Richelieu premium woven Wilton concept from Louis de Poortere. Realising the need to innovate its Wilton production to keep its offer relevant and interesting to the modern consumer, Louis de Poortere has undertaken a major restructuring of its operations at its vertically integrated production site in Belgium. With complete control of the carpet manufacturing process, including spinning, dyeing and weaving, Louis de Poortere has been working hard to transform the production of Wilton weave broadloom carpets and runners. As a result of looking to maximise the efficiency of its wire Wilton and Jacquard looms in widths from 50cm to four-metre, Louis de Poortere has been able to realise a faster and more flexible Wilton programme. The first part of this new programme comes in the relaunch of the iconic Richelieu quality. Now in an extraordinary 144 colours, Richelieu showcases the adaptability of the manufacturer’s reworked production. By stocking hanks of dyed yarn, rather than finished carpet, Louis de Poortere can deliver on any colour in a 4.57m width in just four weeks. Alan Russell, sales director UK, Louis de Poortere, comments: “The launch of Richelieu represents a significant step for Louis de Poortere and we’re hugely excited about its potential to transform our broadloom residential offer. We believe that the collection will shape how retailers engage with their customers, turning the purchasing of carpet into an experience focused on discovering the perfect colour, rather than simply a question of finding the closest match.” The 80/20 wool/nylon velvet of Richelieu launches this October, with the manufacturer also set to unveil other new styles using the advantages of its pre-dyed programme. These include higher-quality velvets and several textured woven Wilton qualities. T 01505 615663 www.louisdepoortere.com

Safe training sorted The Academy for Excellence for Flooring is open for training, with a series of measures that ensure the protection and safety of all trainees and colleagues. The Academy has been able to ensure its continued programme of training at both Foundation and Master Installer level by limiting courses to four candidates. Causing higher demand than normal, flooring professionals are being encouraged to contact the Academy directly to discuss availability and current programmes. Upon arrival, delegates will be allocated a seat, separated at distances of 2m, and this remains theirs throughout the course (one-day or two-day duration). The same pre-assignment of areas also applies for training bays. All materials and tools are pre-sanitised and prepared with trainees using only allocated equipment. The Academy is also allocating all candidates with individual catering, closing the kitchen and shop area until it is deemed safe to reopen for candidates. Academy clothing can still be purchased through a member of staff. Sanitisation points have also been implemented throughout the centre to encourage the regular cleaning of hands when travelling around the Academy. The wearing of face masks is also being encouraged wherever social distancing is not possible. Lee Thompson, Procurement and Technical manager, says; “We’re delighted to be training again at Academy and our recent courses have been able to provide installers with skills as they capitalise on the widespread pent-up demand the industry has been experiencing. “We’ve taken every possible measure to protect our colleagues and course attendees and we’re on hand to help alleviate any fears or concerns about the course before booking your place.” www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

FLOORINGNEWS Adhesives ahoy F. Ball and Co. Ltd. will be demonstrating its range of its range of market-leading flooring adhesives and floor levelling compounds, which are essential in optimising the aesthetic appearance of installed floorcoverings on cruise ships and maintaining the integrity of the installation throughout its working life. F. Ball’s marine-certified products include specialised adhesives for installing carpet, vinyl and rubber floorcoverings, and high performance levelling compounds to create a super smooth, sound subfloor onto which a floorcovering can be installed.

Making headlines at Sky

The company’s marine products have been used to install flooring in some of the world’s most prestigious cruise ships and Mediterranean super yachts, as well as polar exploration vessels, New Orleans paddle steamers showboats, and offshore oil rigs.

High performance subfloor preparation products and adhesive from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used to create a blemish-free, high quality floor finish for one of the main news rooms at Sky News studios in central London.

Amongst the key products for marine applications are Stopgap 700 Superflex and Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compounds, which are recommended for substrates subject to flexing or movement with temperature changes such as steel decking, and Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS temperature tolerant vinyl adhesive, which is able to withstand extreme changes in temperature, from -20°C to +60°C, and is resistant to water.

As well as delivering perfect aesthetics to pass the scrutiny of roaming HD cameras, the flooring had to be super smooth and durable to accommodate the repeated movement of the cameras and other heavy broadcasting equipment.

T 01538 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

A combination of luxury vinyl tiles and rubber sheet was installed over a total floor area of 80m2 at Sky’s Millbank Studios, in Westminster. Situated close to Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, the television studios are often used for political interviews, in addition to general news broadcasts from the UK’s original 24-hour news channel. To provide a firm, smooth base over which the floorcovering could be installed, contractors from Croydon-based iFlor Flooring used F. Ball’s Stopgap 700 Superflex flexible levelling compound over the existing plywood subfloor, having first primed it with Stopgap P131 general purpose primer. Stopgap 700 Superflex is walk-on hard in just 60 minutes after application and allows floorcoverings to be installed in as little as three hours while maintaining a working time of 20–30 minutes. Once the levelling compound had cured, contractors installed the floorcoverings; using wood-effect LVTs for approximately half of the 80m2 area, to ‘dress’ the area used to deliver the news, and Norament rubber sheet floorcoverings over the rest of the room occupied by the cameras and production crew. F. Ball’s Styccobond F58 acrylic emulsion adhesive, designed specifically for rubber installations, was used to fix the rubber sheets firmly in place. T 01538 361 633

Perfect profiles From the best-selling Classic to the in-demand Zenith and premium Max Reflections ranges, floorwise trade counters across the UK and Ireland provide retailers and installers with great value profiles ready to tackle any challenge. Classic has been a mainstay of the floorwise profiles collection for well over a decade, providing standard sim brass and aluminium finishes across a broad range of applications. With cover strips, dual and single edges and z-edge, this is the collection for versatility, offering installers a great ‘go to’ collection ready to handle any installation. Olivia Bowen creates a contemporary kitchen with Karndean Designflooring TV personalities Olivia and Alex Bowen, who first met on reality show Love Island, moved into their Essex house earlier this year after falling in love with the luxurious space on offer and they have wasted no time in creating a stunning contemporary home with bags of glamour. One of the first projects to be completed, a new spacious kitchen, dining and living room has been created where the lounge used to be, making the most of the characterful curved room. A practical utility, complete with bespoke dog shower, has been created by converting the adjoining office. Over six weeks, a team of builders has created a stunning sociable kitchen with an understated beach house vibe in calming tones of cream and grey. One wall has been opened out to the garden patio with extensive sliding doors for an indoors-outdoors feel, increasing the natural light that floods into the open plan space and highlighting the intricate grain details and gently rustic appearance of the Coastal Sawn Oak flooring from Karndean’s Knight Tile collection.

“It was so hard to choose our favourite design but in the end we chose Coastal Sawn Oak from the Knight Tile range” Olivia and Alex Bowen.

As Olivia explained: “Karndean was always my first choice for luxury vinyl flooring. It was so hard to choose our favourite design but in the end we chose Coastal Sawn Oak from the Knight Tile range. We considered laying the flooring vertical but we just loved the herringbone pattern!” Light grey Shaker style kitchen units and a stunning double butler sink give a traditional country look with a contemporary twist and have been topped with Bianco Carrera quartz marble worksurfaces which offer an opulent yet practical surface. A central island features the hob and a breakfast bar so that Olivia can chat to her guests while she cooks. In the sitting area, a comfy sofa has been piled with cushions and throws for an informal space to chill out and socialise while a large dining table has been sited next to the patio doors and can comfortably seat eight for dinner. Here Olivia has added an interesting industrial touch with a large mirror and tripod spotlight lamp. Olivia added: “I really just wanted everything to be perfect and it has actually come out exactly how I imagined it! The colour of this floor has very muted tones but still has the detailed wood grain effect so creates such a chilled, beachy and calm style. It’s super easy to look after, much easier than real wood, quiet underfoot and warm too! We love it that much it’s going across the whole bottom floor of the house.” Visit karndean.com

JONATHAN RICHARDSON JOINS ACG

As ACG’s new Group Development Manager, Jonathan has the right background to understand the industry inside out. Starting as a fitter at age 17 with a flooring contractor, he went on to work in retail for 25 years with well-respected South Manchester-based retailer A.D. Cragg & Son, covering estimating and sales.

Joining ACG was one of the best business decisions. We love the own label, as this increases our margins and helps to protect us from competitors. And industryleading rebates makes ACG the best buying group!

Andy Polhill Superior Finish Flooring St Ives M: 07976 555141

Then, after a spell as sales manager with posh (and Royal warranted) carpet consultants Linney Cooper, overseeing their Chester store, Jonathan joined Axminster Carpets, first as area manager and more lately in a national capacity with responsibility for looking after the buying groups and key accounts.

I highly recommend ACG. Over the last 10 years I enjoyed super rebates as well as the great square meter promotion. The membership is supportive and the ACG show is very worthwhile.

“The move to ACG this year seemed like a perfect fit with all the experience I have gained and keeps me in the centre of an industry I am passionate about” said Jonathan. “I instinctively know the expectations of the retailer, whilst understanding how the suppliers work. This ensures everyone gets the best deal.”

Jonathan joined ACG in August, immediately after lockdown. “I think the timing is right – many retailers have seen the opportunity to re-evaluate their businesses and work out a better way forward. Buying groups offer more protection and more profitability in uncertain times.

“ I decided I wanted to work with ACG because they seemed to have the best balance – a buying group that was not just in the business of signing people up as members but is investing in a better proposition for retailers to up their game and get them a better sale. “ACG has the feel of a family business – very friendly and personal and is run without any corporate pretensions. The money side of it is very transparent with members getting paid rebates directly by their suppliers as well as enjoying better pricing. Independence is everything,” he said. companies and so give ACG more buying power and suppliers more incentive to negotiate better price discounts.

Jennifer Alexander Sharon Leon Carpets Ltd, Inverness M: 07990 574407

I absolutely love being in a buying group. Not only do we get extremely competitive prices that help us compete, but we have protection with own branding and great support from all the ACG members.

Laura Bellamy Brookside Carpets & Curtains, Market Harborough T: 01858 433334

The financial deal is all about margin and profit and here ACG is more direct than most buying groups. Rebate is the key – an extra payment based on turnover that ACG has arranged for suppliers to pay directly into the retailer’s own bank account. “This is a fundamental ACG difference,” says Richard. “Retailers want to handle their own money and transactions with suppliers. We’re just there to make it more profitable.” Presentation is at the centre of new investment at ACG with a range of prestigious point-of-sale units in development to give a quality, professional feel to the in-store environment. This initiative reinforces the valuable benefit of own-label marketing, using ACG’s distinctive Smart Choice branding. As a result, retailers can present ranges with an added-value feel and without the threat of margin erosion through Internet price comparison.

There are no catches, no drawbacks – only positive benefits and more profitability. And happy members! I wholeheartedly recommend this buying group!

Take-back takes off

Winning against waste

Five new distributors from the Headlam Group have signed up to the Recofloor take-back scheme, opening up more opportunities for contractors and fitters in the Midlands and East of England to divert waste vinyl flooring from landfill.

An early adopter of Recofloor, Bramhall Flooring has demonstrated the ease of implementing the UK’s vinyl flooring take back scheme to collect, return and recycle material from STI Poynton, an electronics manufacturing site in Cheshire.

The new drop-off sites are located at four Garrard Waters sites in Coventry, Leicester, Northampton and Peterborough, and Mytton Flooring, Norwich. Founded by leading flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro in 2009, Recofloor accepts luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), smooth vinyl and safety vinyl offcuts, loose lay and roll ends, as well as uplifted smooth vinyl for recycling back into new products. Recofloor Scheme Manager, Carla Eslava comments: “These drop-off sites definitely add value to the network, bringing the total to eight now in the Midlands. This is great news for contractors and fitters giving them more local options to deposit their waste vinyl flooring for recycling and increase the diversion of material from landfill.” Being operational from late summer all the new sites received guidance and support from the Recofloor team on how the scheme operates and also received a welcome pack, collection bags and bins to ensure the scheme launched successfully. Welcoming their participation in Recofloor, Richard Hurlston, Branch Manager at Garrard Waters, Coventry says they are pleased to offer an additional service to their customers. He comments: “We support the aims of Recofloor in diverting material from landfill and being able to offer this facility will help to reduce disposal costs for our contractors and fitters. My next steps are to visit customers and further build awareness of the Recofloor scheme and its sustainable advantages for their businesses.” Carla adds: “The addition of these five new Headlam Group sites means we now have 59 distributors participating in the Recofloor scheme. T 0161 355 7618 36

www.recofloor.org

Successful deployment of the scheme in two phases at the company’s premises earned Bramhall Flooring the Recofloor Project of the Year Award 2020. The company was also Highly Commended in the Contractor of the Year 2020 category. The contractor was initially engaged in June 2019 to replace existing flooring with 1,400m2 of Polyflor SD antistatic vinyl at STI Poynton. Large Recofloor bulk bags were placed on site to collect all the uncontaminated uplifted vinyl. Installation offcuts from the new vinyl were also bagged separately and collected from site for recycling. Unfortunately, within two months of the project’s completion the whole building was left under a foot of water after a nearby river burst its banks. Despite being cleaned, the new vinyl had to be replaced due to concerns about possible water damage underneath. In June 2020, the Bramhall Flooring team returned to replace the highspecification floor, this time in a ‘more serviceable’ darker grey. A turbostripper was used to uplift the vinyl without damaging the subfloor. As the floor had been prepared the first time, there were no challenges on refitting the new vinyl. In total, around 18 pallets of waste vinyl flooring were recycled from both project phases. Julian Normie, Managing Director at Bramhall Flooring commented: “We totally buy into Recofloor and it was easy to use Recofloor on both phases of this project. We believe that recycling helps the environment and doesn’t contribute to overloaded landfill sites. Using Recofloor also saves us money on skips.” T 0161 355 7618

FLOORING FOCUS

Traditionalista or fashionista – wood decor does it The British appetite for wood effects in LVT, vinyl and cushion floor seems unstoppable and leading floor designers have been prompt in delivering styles that sustain the sector’s appeal to both traditionalists and fashionistas! And even in this most challenging year for product development, impressive progress has still been made in responding to colour trends and demands for increased authenticity, alongside technical enhancement that has achieved greater stability, performance and ease of installation.

Victoria’s Universal Parquet in Flint Grey

Karndean Designflooring has introduced a new, natural wood grain emboss as part of the latest update to its class-leading Van Gogh collection. Handcrafted and designed by Karndean’s in-house product designers, Grey Brushed Oak, Warm Brushed Oak and Golden Brushed Oak feature the exclusive natural wood grain emboss, accentuating the natural texture and aesthetics of the individual wood that inspired it. The designs come in a full length plank (56” x 9”) and smaller (28” x 7”) herringbone for matching room to room or dividing spaces in open plan areas of the home.

Warm Brushed Oak from Karndean

Consumers are becoming bolder with their interior choices and mixing colours together like this is a sure fire way to stamp their mark on a room The dramatic entry of Invictus into the LVT market in 2019 stimulated huge interest among retailers, building on the strength of Associated Weaver’s carpet brands. High profile marketing and sophisticated POS have driven its vinyl sales very successfully ever since. Check out the Invictus “community” online to see a smart gallery of installations from happy customers at https://invictus.co.uk/lvt/community Among more than 30 wood decors available, Invictus selected two ranges – New England Oak and Highland Oak – to develop its popular parquet offering - each available in four colourways which can also be combined for a unique interior design.

Designer Parquet by Invictus

“We’ve always been recognised for the intricate beauty of our wood designs, and our Van Gogh collection offers our widest selection of natural wood hues with cool neutral, grey and warm tones,” explains Stella Coyle, national retail sales manager of Karndean Designflooring. She said: “The latest update has also seen us offer the same wood designs in a gluedown and rigid core format, allowing more flexibility to select the best fixing type for your space. “The designs encompass some of our most celebrated hues including classic Country Oak, traditional French Oak and Scandi Blush Oak in a gluedown and rigid core option for the first time.” After the successes Victoria Design Floors has seen with the Distinctive Landscape Wildwood Click range, the company has now upgraded the spec of its Universal Click products too. Their range of Universal 55 rigid click now comes with a built-in foam pad removing the need for a seperate underlay saving you both installation time and component costs. Benefits for the end users include higher sound reduction properties (now 20dB V’s 8dB on the previous click with no foam pad). Universal 55 is a collection of 14 wood and 4 stone designs featuring a 2G click system, topped with an embossed 0.55mm wear layer. The appetite for wooden LVT designs shows no sign of diminishing which is why the company also introduced 4 new parquet colours to the dry back range at the end of 2019. Also available in a full-length plank (7.25” x 48”) these colours work brilliantly together or on their own.

The latest option is Designer Parquet, a contemporary answer to the appetite for the rustic handcrafted appearance and it is available in three designs. And there’s more to come – more parquet will appear in 2021 from Invictus. Whether designing a warm and inviting home interior scheme or large scale commercial installation, practicality is just as important as aesthetics and Expona EnCore Rigid Loc from Polyflor offers a flooring solution that caters for both. The rigid Stone Plastic Composite (SPC) construction gives the floor superior stability. It is also ideal for laying over existing floor coverings, again saving on preparation and installation time. An acoustic layer and use of 5G-i locking technology adds to the exemplary performance.

Aesthetically, the collection of 12 faithfully replicated wood designs have been expertly selected for their natural beauty and variation for a more authentic finish. With herringbone, limewashed, wide planks, reclaimed, rustic and strip effects, Timberline certainly covers the bases of modern wood looks. The collection’s plank effects are rooted in the influence of Scandinavian design with options such as Oslo, Helsinki and Copenhagen. Herringbone is also a strong part of the collection with limewashed and grey variants of Leoline’s Marilyn design along with the reclaimed look of Lido. Wool Week 2020 - October 5-18 The tide is turning towards wool By Martin Curtis, Wool Carpet Focus Group The tide is changing. People are becoming more interested in what is happening around them and when they see things that are really wrong they are prepared to do something about it. In time people will realise that even making a small change in their daily lives will add up to make a big change to the world we live in. That will include buying products to last longer, look better for longer, be safer, be environmentally beneficial and make them feel better – and for the most part that means wool! There is so much scientific information available today which conclusively proves that wool is the best fibre for most things, including carpets and rugs, that it is a wonder anyone needs reminding. Today more than ever information is power. Consumers want to know what they are buying, where it has come from and if it is doing damage to the planet and their children’s futures. I believe that if a retailer speaks honestly and openly to the customer in their shop the results will be hugely beneficial for all parties. It isn’t rocket science. It is a logical and reasoned discussion as to where we want to be in the future. We look back now on how murderous it was to put lead in our petrol. The reason for doing so was to make it fractionally cheaper to run our cars but it didn’t have to be that way - it was just an easy way out. Recycling? Weren`t those who recycled looked upon as slightly deranged and from another planet? What are we all doing now? Yes, recycling is part of everyday life and those who don`t do it are pariahs.

Wool Week’s10th anniversary The Campaign officially began in October 2010 with Wool Week activities and is a truly collaborative initiative involving farmers, textile manufacturers, carpet makers, brands, retailers, fashion & interior designers around the world. The Campaign for Wool is a global endeavour initiated by its patron, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, in order to raise awareness amongst consumers about the unique, natural, renewable and biodegradable benefits offered by the fibre.

Consumers want to know what they are buying, where it has come from and if it is doing damage to the planet

For the 10 year celebration, the Campaign has worked on a yearlong student design competition, bringing together leading brands and retailers across a variety of wool product types with nearly 20 universities throughout the UK.

Martin Curtis (left)

“This student design competition is one of my favourite Campaign for Wool initiatives,” says Nicholas Coleridge, Chairman of The Campaign for Wool. “It introduces the unique properties of wool as a fibre to student textile designers, sometimes for the very first time. And, having encountered wool, it often becomes a design habit.

Carpet retailers have a significant advantage over online sellers because the consumer needs their personal help and advice. Which carpet is the best? What are the advantages and disadvantages of synthetics over wool and vice versa. There are many really clued up retailers and they are able to give their customers honest advice. Some take an easier road and will get a sale in the book no matter what and that is going to have to change. A wool carpet will stay looking better for longer than a synthetic carpet (look at all the scientific evidence included on woolcarpetsnaturally.org). A wool carpet that costs £30 per sq metre will under normal circumstances keep looking great for 10 years or more. Let’s say that the cost is therefore £3 per sq metre per year, akin to the fashion industry referencing cost per wear data.

“Students are introduced to top wool-using brands, and get a sense of how they operate and what they are like on the inside. Several students in past years’ competitions have ended up working for these brands,” he added. Wool Week starts on October 5 and the pandemic means many of the events will be held online so follow these tags on social media to keep up with the latest news: #WoolWeek @CampaignforWool #MakeADifference

A synthetic one (and please remember these are actually a form of plastic and we know how bad that stuff is) that is say £20 per sq metre may only look good for 5 years (although I know this is pushing it!) so this equates to £4 per sq meter cost per year. Anecdotally, when I asked our group of carpet manufacturers, many of whom produce both synthetic and wool carpets, which would they want in their homes everyone said wool!

Woolabilities - selling benefits Wool carpets are close to the heart of the UK consumer but with increasing competition from synthetic fibres, wool has to work a little harder to promote the “woolabilities” that make it so special. Here’s our ‘Wool Workshop’ - a selling aid to help to trade consumers up to premium products by selling the benefits of natural fibre.

SAFE

PRACTICAL Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages. COMFORT Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

DURABLE

SAFETY Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

EASY-CARE

ECO/ENVIRONMENTAL Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

THE BEST CARPET WOOL

COMFORT

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

FLOORING BIZ NEWS

OCTOBER 2020

Promoting excellence in installation Welcome to this new column from the NICF, the National Institute of Carpet and Floorlayers (formerly the National Institute of Carpet Fitters). In future columns we will talk about tips for floorlayers, tricks of the trade and other areas. But in this first one we would like to introduce you to the NICF. Formed in 1979, the NICF is today the only national trade association supporting professionals working in the domestic flooring sector. The NICF furthers the interests of its members by promoting excellence in the fields of carpet, laminate, domestic sheet vinyl, timber and luxury vinyl tile fitting.

The aim of the NICF has always been to promote excellence, by encouraging the understanding and awareness of the British Standards Code of Practice for the installation of floor coverings, and to provide assurance of quality of workmanship to the public. The NICF rebranded as the National Institute of Carpet and Floorlayers in 1998 in order to recognise those members who were multi-skilled and also in order to support vinyl fitters, wood and laminate fitters and vinyl tile fitters. In the same year the NICF in conjunction with the Contract Flooring Association (CFA) formed the Flooring Industry Training Association, FITA, and set up a state-of-the art training facility. Its training courses are suitable for newcomers to the trade, as well as for experienced fitters wishing to improve their skills. One of the benefits of membership of the NICF is eligibility for 15% off the cost of FITA’s standard courses and 1-day workshops. Membership also includes a range of benefits, products and services. These include: discounts on carpet adhesive, sanitisers, flooring accessories, tools and workwear. Membership includes the use of the NICF logo for vans, stationary, emails and websites, which demonstrates to your customers and the wider industry that you have been independently audited. Members are also listed on the NICF website and directory, attracting work. We provide a whole host of free benefit helplines covering areas such as legal advice, technical support, health & safety and employment law. And NICF provides members with regular updates via our bi-monthly newsletter, website and forums. These have been particularly helpful during the pandemic, and have included government updates that are relevant to our sector, industry news, grants and funding available and support to help members keep working safely, If you are interested in joining the NICF, there are four different membership categories, covering all levels of carpet fitting and floor laying. Full details can be found on the NICF website at: www.nicfltd.org.uk

Sales surge continues The flooring industry continues to experience an unprecedented boom in business post-lockdown with reports of up to 60% increases in trade, held back only by supply chain problems. The Carpet Foundation’s latest newsletter quote one of its members; “it’s ‘like having 10 Christmases at once!’ and anecdotal evidence from buying groups reports many retailers who are trading between 20 and 40% over 2019 figures for this period. Major carpet retailer ScS says sales are up by 51 per cent over the last six weeks, with the demand creating 300 new jobs. ScS had already reported a 92 per cent increase in order intake for the period from May to July this year and the trend has continued across its 100 UK stores. Latest retail sales figures from the ONS see a 10% boost in home goods sales, including floorcovering, as consumers continue to switch discretionary spending to invest in their home. Analysts say thwarted leisure spending, especially travel, is being switched to the home now the summer’s over and the ONS report compares August trading with pre-pandemic February to arrive at the 9.9% growth figure. “Retail sales continued to grow, further surpassing their pre-pandemic level,” ONS deputy national statistician for economic statistics Jonathan Athow said. “Sales of household goods thrived as the demand for home improvement continued.” Victoria’s trading update to shareholders said: “Trading has continued to be resilient since we last updated the market in July and demand has recovered in all our principal markets. This is reflected in the Board’s view that consumers are prioritising spending on improving and refreshing their homes following the lockdown.” Supply chain issues continue to cause issues with deliveries delayed on flooring and underlay as many manufacturers who closed during lockdown struggle to re-build stocks in the face of high demand.

Ulster hit by hospitality downturn Up to 70 jobs are at risk at Ulster Carpets as the pandemic impacts its core hospitality business. Retail sales have “recovered well” however, says the company. The company has entered a formal consultation period with employees and has said up to 70 roles at all levels across the group may be affected. Ulster employs around 300 staff in Portadown, Co Armagh. A company statement said: “The core business of Ulster Carpets is heavily dependent on the hospitality and cruise ship sectors and this is the direct cause for the need to reduce operations. Whilst the retail business has recovered well, the onerous restrictions placed on international air travel are likely to impact our key markets for the foreseeable future.”

Domotex delayed Domotex – the world’s largest flooring trade fair – has pushed back its January 2021 dates for the Hannover show to May 18–20. A digital conference will now be held in January. Organisers had been holding out for the original dates and made many special arrangements but now say the “rampant Covid-19 pandemic” and its impact on worldwide travel has forced a re-think. 70 percent of the 35,000 visitors to the event in 2020 came from outside Germany. Organisers Deutsche Messe AG said: “There is a general uncertainty in relation to travelling abroad. It has therefore become difficult to deliver on the show’s core value proposition, which is linked, among other things, to the high number of international exhibitors and visitors.” The show originally announced that the postponement would be to May 20-22 but a clash with European whit holidays has brought it forward two days, running from Tuesday to Thursday. Flooring

Factsheet Adhesive Types Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticized PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors.

ADHESIVES

SELECTION CHECKLIST

The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time: The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked. Odour: Low odour, solvent free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.

Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels.

Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.

Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive.

Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.

Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.

Strength: Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured.

W NE

Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but

this criteria must be checked where appropriate. Subfloor: What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard. While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces. The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation. Special Performance: Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments. Air Quality and the Environment: The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.

Flooring factsheet from Interfloor Best Practice Guide Fitting the Right Underlay Selecting the right underlay is not always easy. There are a lot to choose from and there are many factors to consider such as comfort, durability, suitability with underfloor heating, noise reduction, warmth and more. Interfloor has been advocating the use of underlay with new floorcoverings since the 1940s, pioneering its “British method” worldwide and developing its market-leading brands Duralay and Tredaire to supply hundreds of customers in over 70 countries. Here they offer advice on the key considerations for selecting the best underlay …

Our Underlay Range

Sustainability Re-use and recycling are key considerations for determining a flooring product’s green credentials. Interfloor’s crumb rubber and PU foam underlays contain approximately 80%-90% recycled content. The crumb rubber is made from recycled car tyres and some 3 million are recycled every year to make our underlay. We launched FSC® certified carpet gripper in 2011 and produced the first EC1 and EC2 flooring adhesives in 2008.

Impact sound With more people opting for hard floorcoverings there are major benefits to using a specialist underlay; not least, the reduction in sound impact. Interfloor’s Duralay was the first brand to develop special noise reduction underlays for wood and laminate floors. Independent tests prove our sponge rubber Timbermate underlays, with their superior weight and density, reduce acoustic noise levels by up to 30 per cent.

Underfloor heating It’s important to make sure that the effect of underfloor heating is not reduced by the underlay. Choose a specialist underlay for use with underfloor heating and check its thermal insulation value, making sure the thermal resistance of the total installation doesn’t exceed 0.15m2 K/W. Interfloor’s high tog underlays, including Duralay Heatflow and Tredaire King and Defender, help keep rooms warm and cosy.

Quality standards With greater emphasis being placed on building products’ performance, it’s important that those used in residential and commercial environments conform to British and European quality standards. Interfloor’s underlays and accessories are compliant with the relevant quality and safety standards, including BS 5808: 1991 / EN14499 : 2015. They also hold the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) Green Label Plus accreditation, meaning our products conform to the CRI’s high standards for indoor air quality and low VOC emissions.

Interfloor manufactures Tredaire and Duralay, leading brands underlay market, that are recognized by customers as brands of quality, and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 54

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels.

www.interfloor.com

The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet. Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home.

www.floorwise.co.uk

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will...

• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Combination

Crumb

PU foam

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

www.luxeunderlay.com

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Static

Sprouting

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

58

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment. THE STOCKLISTS October 2020

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

Shading

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

Pile Reversal

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

Shedding

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Indentations

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder. THE STOCKLISTS October 2020

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

Associated Carpet Group www.acgcarpets.com Contact: Richard Moore Tel: 01942 825520 richard@acgcarpets.com

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions ne of the key reasons to join a buying group is to O benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS October 2020

• Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support

Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.
