Door to Floor delivery. Now quicker than ever before. At Associated Weavers we appreciate how crucial efficient carpet delivery logistics need to be for you

as a top retailer to stay ahead of your competitors. That’s why we’ve invested so much time and money to introduce a super-efficient delivery system to

maximise the appeal of our entire carpet collection. Since we increased our transport fleet by 35 vehicles last autumn, we have enjoyed significantly

greater sales. And, in the UK, our local distribution

partner has also added eight new vehicles to make

sure we keep up with the anticipated demand from you and your customers this year. Across most of

the UK, you are now able to receive deliveries of rolls

or cuts within five working days from the point of

order. We have also improved our service to Northern Ireland and the more remote areas of the

UK. Just as our transport fleet now offers unbeatable

delivery schedules, so our range continues to produce a superior performance as well.

Way ahead of the rest

Carpets might not be the most obviously branded item in the consumer’s shopping basket, but brand

awareness is a marketing tool that we take very

seriously at Associated Weavers. That’s because we are usually the first to identify trends, the first

to introduce new technologies, and the first to offer stunning merchandising and display support in your store. These ‘firsts’, combined with our

strong marketing strategy, are all the ingredients we need to stay firmly in front. And we do everything we can to uphold this enviable reputation.

A trio of firsts

Just as we lead the way with transport, we’ve led the way with new brand launches over the years. When we introduced the revolutionary iSense, it

was heralded as the softest carpet in the market. This has been such a success story that we’ve

regularly added new ranges. Currently, new Discretion with 14 colours and Obsession with 11

colours are the ones to look out for this autumn. After iSense came the fabulous Invictus brand, an

invincible stain-resistant, multi-width carpet that

will be another beneficiary of new additions this year. And the latest exciting new product is the

Vivendi brand, for ultimate comfort all around the home. As one of our most innovative luxury products, it features our unique iVivo yarn – a new tenth-gauge solution-dyed nylon fibre representing years of industry-leading work by our designers and technicians.

So keep on looking out for the Associated Weavers butterfly – for efficient deliveries of unique products, all with flying colours.

Carpet&FlooringReview Fashionable Forest

vinyl flooring manufacturer Polyflor has added new wood effect designs to their relaunched Forest fx PUR flooring collection, incorporating the latest commercial interior trends into one of their most popular sheet vinyl ranges.

The expanded 18 design heterogeneous collection features 9 exciting new shades, including two parquet effect designs for creating dramatic statement floors as well as a selection of contemporary grey-toned oaks and rustic wood designs which add variety to the collection. These on-trend authentic wood effects have been created by Polyflor’s design development team who incorporate intricate grain detail and natural tones into each floorcovering. The Forest fx range is available in a practical and resilient 2.0mm gauge vinyl sheet format with a 0.7mm wear layer, making it ideal for high traffic, heavy commercial environments in the education, healthcare, leisure, retail, housing and office sectors. The product’s cross-linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement (PUR) offers a low cost, polish-free maintenance regime for the lifetime of the flooring. Unique floor designs can also easily be achieved by incorporating inlaid features and logos, managed by Polyflor’s in house Design Service team who use waterjet cutting technology. Tom Rollo, Polyflor’s Marketing Manager comments, “The introduction of new and contemporary designs along with an increase in the size of our UK manufactured Forest fx collection means there is now even more choice for our customers in this popular product category.”

Heaven sent

Forest fx contains recycled material and is 100% recyclable via the Recofloor scheme. The Forest fx flooring collection also achieves individually certified BRE Global A+ ratings for major use areas which can contribute to BREEAM credits, as can the product’s BES 6001 certification which demonstrates compliance with a recognised responsible sourcing scheme as certified by the BRE. The unique two-ply polyester twist provides lasting stain-resistance and excellent recovery properties, making Made in Heaven ideal for homeowners looking for enduring carpet that is wonderfully soft. Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta, commented: “We’ve launched the Made in Heaven collection to plug the gap in the market for carpet that is wonderfully soft, but that will also stay looking good thanks to its stain-resistance and bounce-back fibres. Using the latest in polyester fibres, Made in Heaven offers the homeowner an exquisite blend of softness, style and performance; it really is sent from the heavens.” The collection is initially available in two styles, Angelic and Aurora, both available in four and five-metre widths and made from easy-clean 100% Made in Heaven PES yarn. The 2,000g/m2 pile weight of Angelic offers a rich and luxurious feel with long 20-year stain and 15-year wear warranties. NEWS all aboard with F Ball

F. Ball has played a key role in the refurbishment of a 30year-old Routemaster bus to create a library for children at Tolworth Nursery, Infant and Junior School, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.

On the top deck of the bus, Stopgap 700 flexible smoothing underlayment was applied over a firmly-secured plywood subfloor. Stopgap 700 is fast-drying, fibre-reinforced and selflevelling. It is designed for use on plywood, sand/cement screeds and steel subfloors. Applied at a thickness of 3mm, it is ready to receive floorcovering from as little as three hours. On both floors, Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier was used to install premium blue Burmatex fibre-bonded carpet tiles. Styccobond F41 dries to create a permanently tacky film that prevents ‘loose-lay’ carpet tiles from moving, but allows individual tiles to be lifted and replaced easily when worn or damaged. New carpet tiles were also installed on the bus’s staircase, where old floorcoverings and adhesive residues had been removed prior to the beginning of the project. Styccobond F66 solvent-free contact adhesive was used to install the carpet tiles as its instant bond-forming properties make it suitable for affixing floorcoverings onto vertical surfaces. Stycco Flex, a rapid-curing flexible adhesive, was then used to attach the aluminium stair nosings. The flooring installation was undertaken free-of-charge by local contractor Eric Miller Flooring; also based in Tolworth. F.Ball donated the adhesive and smoothing underlayments used in the refurbishment. Eric commented: “It was a bit of an unusual project. I’ve never installed flooring on a bus before. F.Ball kindly donated the products for this job, but we use them all the time. They’re reliable and they always do what they say on the tin.” T 01583 361 633

Flooring cats and dogs

Manchester-based vinyl flooring manufacturer Polyflor recently donated Polysafe safety flooring to the new RSPCa Bury & Oldham facility at Strinesdale Country Park, Oldham. The new £1.7 million centre currently houses around 50 cats and 15 dogs, has a state-of-the-art veterinary suite and boasts cat and dog ‘meet and greet rooms’. The flooring was installed by local building contractor Emanuel Whitakker who started the project in February 2016, with the completed centre opening its doors to the public in May 2017. Three shades of Polysafe Mosaic PUR safety flooring were used throughout the building, with various colours being used to indicate different zones. The blue Freshwater shade was installed in the reception, shop, corridors, dog meet and greet room, operating theatre and clinic. The beige Akoya design was fitted in the cattery, upstairs office area and training room. Polysafe Mosaic PUR is a high specification, decorative safety vinyl flooring available in 10 colours with an impressive high density flake decoration and safety aggregates incorporated in the vinyl. This product complies with HSE and UK Slip Group Guidelines to give sustainable slip resistance, achieving 36+ on the Pendulum wet test (Slider 96/Four S rubber) as well as adhering to EN 13845 – the European standard for safety flooring. Dementia design for caring

Safety flooring from Uk manufacturer Polyflor was chosen to help create a safe yet homely interior design scheme for Somerset Care’s latest care home, Stockmoor Lodge in Bridgwater.

Stockmoor Lodge is a modern, purpose-built nursing home with specialist dementia care provision that can accommodate up to 90 residents. Designed by The Drawing Room Interiors Ltd of Sutton Coldfield and furnished by YTM Furniture of Pontefract, this state of the art care home opened in March 2017. Three safety flooring collections featuring sustainable wet slip resistance were used throughout communal areas and bathrooms within the care home – Polysafe Wood fx PUR wood effect flooring, Polysafe Hydro Evolve flooring for continually wet areas and Expona Control PUR luxury vinyl tiles. Diana Cellela, Director of The Drawing Room Interiors Ltd commented, “These Polyflor safety flooring products were ideal for creating a safe yet non-clinical living environment for Stockmoor Lodge’s residents which was in line with the dementiafriendly design principles we work to. We have used a range of Polyflor’s flooring products on various care home projects and are continually impressed with the variety of beautiful designs offered and the performance delivered once installed.” As a manufacturer of flooring suitable for dementia care facilities, Polyflor has recently become a member of the Dementia Action Alliance who are committed to transforming the lives of the 800,000 people living with dementia in the UK. Polyflor is also a longstanding partner of the International Dementia Design Network at the University of Salford. T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com

Fast action against moisture

a range of high performance subfloor preparation products from F. Ball and Co Ltd. have been used as part of a major development to create a Satellite Cancer Centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. The new 1,700m2 state-of-the-art centre at the hospital is expected to provide 16,000 radiotherapy and 4,600 chemotherapy treatments a year, meaning the hospital needed a high quality floor that is able to withstand heavy usage and vigorous cleaning while also having an aesthetically pleasing finish. A moisture test undertaken on the recently installed sand/cement screed subfloor, using a Protimeter MMS2, found readings of 999, well above the “at risk” reading of 200, indicating excessive levels of residual construction moisture in the subfloor. A hygrometer reading was then taken on the advice of F.Ball’s technical representative to accurately measure the relative humidity of the subfloor. Due to the timing implications of the project there was insufficient time to allow the subfloor to dry naturally, so, after sanding down the floor to create a smooth surface and removing all laitance and contaminants, flooring contractors Mode Flooring Ltd, acting on advice from F. Ball’s technical service team, applied two coats of Stopgap F78 One Component Waterproof Surface Membrane. Once the waterproof surface membrane was dry, contractors used F.Ball’s Stopgap Green Bag mixed with Stopgap 114 Liquid to create a low odour, protein free, smoothing underlayment to achieve a smooth and level surface ready for the application of F. Ball’s Styccobond F44 high bond strength adhesive to secure the vinyl floorcovering to the surface. T 01583 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

NEWS Sustainable success

Energy generation, equestrian surface materials and even the power of social media raising consumer awareness are all helping to drive growth in the reuse and recycling of waste carpet.

Commercial sector demand for sustainability is another factor in future growth of tackling the 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arising in the UK each year, delegates at the ninth Carpet Recycling UK 2017 Annual Conference and Awards Event heard. Sponsored by Invista, manufacturers of Antron Carpet Fibres, the one-day conference at Aston Villa Football Club in Birmingham in June celebrated the achievements and significant contributions by members – both individuals and organisations - who are helping to create a circular economy for carpet by reusing existing resources. Thanking CRUK’s core funders whose support is ‘key to our success’, CRUK Director Laurance Bird said: “These leading UK carpet manufacturers believe that creating producer responsibility for their product at end of life is very important for building their business on a sustainable base. “Over the past year or so, we’ve seen an increasing amount of activity to reach out to their customers and, indeed consumers, in different ways to help them with the recovery of material. Their activities are helping to achieve sustainability with less waste to landfill and lower costs. However, challenges still remain with cleanliness and purity of materials for recycling; clean segregation is crucial.” CRUK’s core funders are Cormar Carpets, Lifestyle Floors/Headlam, Desso, ege, Milliken, Balsan and Marlings. Laurance continued: “We are pleased with the sustained level of attendance from across the supply chain from a range of international and British companies. Feedback has been great, including verbal comments about the benefits of networking at the conference. Companies are already setting up meetings following the event!” Welcoming changing attitudes among consumers that is helping to drive more recycling of carpet waste, he added: “Consumers are getting the sustainable message through the power of social media. Social media is working!” T 0161 440 8325

Bridging the gap

With a continued shortage of skilled, industry-qualified fitters, the academy for Excellence in Flooring is responding with new course dates for this autumn, while also refreshing content to include new innovations in flooring and improve the benefits of being a Master Installer.

After the three-day Master Installer course, experienced fitters will leave with a manufacturer-accredited qualification that allows them to offer a new lifetime workmanship warranty on Quick-Step wood and laminate floors. The Master Installer badge also demonstrates the installer is among the most skilled in the industry, capable of undertaking even the most complex of installations. Course content has recently been refreshed to accommodate the extra wide and long planks of the new Majestic laminate and Massimo wood collections and how to adapt installation techniques to overcome the challenges faced by these large formats. For installers actively involved in LVT, the Academy offers a similar Master Installer scheme, exclusively for Quick-Step’s LIVYN luxury vinyl collection. Again, the two-day, pass or fail course, results in Master Installers being the only floor fitters able to offer a new lifetime workmanship warranty on LIVYN installations. Lee Thompson, Technical Manager, Academy for Excellence in Flooring, commented: “As we enter the busiest time of the year for floor installation, the lack of qualified floor fitters is never more apparent. With full order books and long lead times, the industry is still far from matching supply with demand. We are committed to addressing this divide, and with the scheduling of more Master Installer courses than ever before, we are reacting to the increased demand for industry recognised accreditations.” See www.quick-step-academy.co.uk for new Autumn course dates

NEWS awards fixture

Carpet Recycling Uk held its fourth annual awards ceremony in June to mark the achievements of members who have demonstrated innovation, commitment and best practice in the sector. Guest host Andrew Bird, Chair of LARAC (Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee) presented the winning individuals and organisations with their trophies and certificates at Aston Villa Football Club in Birmingham. It was a double celebration for Ellen Petts, Managing Director of Greenstream Flooring CIC whose ongoing success in the carpet tile reuse sector and ability to create new solutions saw her clinch two awards – Reuse Member of the Year and the 2017 Outstanding Achievement Award. Expressing her ‘delight and genuine surprise’ at the recognition, Ellen added: “We’re always pushing reuse as it is at the top of the waste hierarchy, providing the best environmental option for carpet tiles as well as important social benefits.” Mark Purnell of Fantasy Flooring was named Recycling Champion for his hard work and efforts in setting up systems and processes to increase carpet recycling at their Bristol site. For the third year running, Designer Contracts Ltd was named Take Back Partner of the Year for its continued success in working with its supply chain to recycle carpet installation waste. Recycler of the Year went to James Robinson Fibres for their innovative work in driving carpets up the waste hierarchy and development of new systems to recycle carpet waste. Exhibitor boost for Domotex’s 30th fair

Domotex doesn’t open for another five months, but it¹s already apparent that the 30th edition of the world’s leading tradeshow for floorcoverings in January 2018 will be a very strong and international affair. “We’re more than pleased with the influx of exhibitor registrations for the upcoming show. It proves that the market is happy with where Domotex is headed. More exhibitors have confirmed their participation at Domotex than at the same time last year,” commented Susanne Klaproth, the director in charge of Domotex and Deutsche Messe. The show will feature around 1,400 exhibitors from more than 60 nations.

The upcoming Domotex is taking a fresh new approach, with an improved site layout and a core focus on the product individualization megatrend, as symbolized by the adoption of “unique youniverse” as the keynote theme. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in a captivating world of trends, innovation and lifestyle in way they have never done before. “Many exhibitors are already hard at work preparing for their showcases and their new locations at the venue. They are busy doing things like exploring ways of harnessing the keynote theme. Visitors are right to be excited about what awaits them at the show,” added Klaproth. www.domotex.de 34 September 2017

Powering ahead at Ulster

Next year will mark 80 years of manufacturing for Ulster Carpets who are showing no signs of slowing down. Dedicated to producing the finest axminster and Wilton carpets, their focus on innovation and investment has resulted in them expanding their competitive advantage in recent years despite a decline in the carpet manufacturing industry.

Whilst tough trading and financial periods have seen many of their competitors move their operations abroad, Ulster’s long term strategy and proactive business approach has enabled them to withstand the crisis and ensure manufacturing and all operations remain within the UK and Ireland. In the past few months alone Ulster have created twenty new jobs, providing a welcome boost to the local economy. Ulster’s ethos is centred on growth and development, of which investment in infrastructure plays a huge role. As part of a £35million regeneration of all woven manufacturing facilities at their Northern Ireland headquarters, last year saw the completion of a brand new state-of-the-art Dyehouse and Energy Centre, designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce the company’s carbon footprint. The remaining phases of the redevelopment are set to be rolled out in the coming years. In terms of trading, Ulster’s residential market continues to flourish with this month seeing the launch of their latest loop collection HΛBITÜS. The Danish inspired collection which sits beside the company’s Øpen Spaces range, answers the consumer demand for durable yet tactile products and adds a new variety to their residential collections. The next few months will also see new additions to some of their most popular Axminster ranges; Beaumont, Braeburn and Tazmin, which emphasises Ulster’s commitment to developing their product offering and establishing themselves as market leader. It is their commitment to growth and development that has allowed Ulster Carpets to maintain their edge after all these years.

“Ulster’s ethos is centred on growth and development, of which investment in infrastructure plays a huge role.”

Nick Coburn, Group Managing Director and Deputy Chairman commented “Ulster Carpet’s continued focus on innovation and investment has allowed us to grow and maintain our competitive advantage in the marketplace. A family owned but professionally managed business, we are committed to operating as a vertically selfsufficient company, maximising our control over the entire manufacturing process, from the selection and purchase of the wool to the final checking of every piece of carpet prior to shipment.” It is this “from sheep to floor” mentality, along with the determination to concentrate all operations within the UK and Ireland that sets Ulster Carpets apart from the competition. Their emphasis on progression and their dedication to delivering top quality products will ensure they continue to strengthen their position as a premium carpet brand in the years to come. NEWS Flooring Republic set for growth

Massive investment, major impact and monster growth are set to be the hallmarks of Flooring Republic’s next 18 months as it propels the fast growing business in a mission to becoming the largest solid wood and wood laminate flooring specialists in the Uk by the end of 2018. Flooring Republic’s growth has come hand in hand with the phenomenal increase in wood flooring demand and with this set to increase even further they will open new outlets in cities and towns that share their approach to providing greater employment, the opportunity for rewarding careers and providing customers with the highest quality flooring. Huge backing from powerful Chinese investors through a supportive and forward thinking, giant corporation has already seen the acquisition of online flooring specialists Posh Flooring, making a substantial addition to their portfolio; and the number of Flooring Republic outlets is set to double in the coming months with the aim of having 80 stores retailing throughout the UK by December next year. Flooring Republic is the UK retail arm of the family business Anbo Holdings that emerged in 1988 and has its own sustainable supply chain from forestry, woodland and production centres in China to the stores run by CEO of Anbo International and Flooring Republic, Bobby Zhou. Bobby comments: “We believe that Flooring Republic offers a unique business model through sustainably managed forests, fabulous strategic and economic development partnerships with urban centres throughout the country, secure employment opportunities and career progression including professional training academy apprenticeships and ultimately the best of both worlds for our customers in progressive retail outlets and hi-tech shopping experiences.

“We offer the best of both worlds for our customers in progressive retail outlets and hi-tech shopping experiences. We intend to be number one in this industry and we want to work with you!” “We are actively seeking and being regularly approached by strategic business allies that will see us add to our nationwide network through local enterprise partnerships with councils in cities and towns in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Existing colleagues in cities such as London, Leeds, Glasgow, Birmingham, York and Cardiff are already working closely with Flooring Republic and share our enthusiasm. Our message is clear. We intend to be number one in this industry and we want to work with you.’ Flooring Republic is currently scouring the globe to secure even greater sustainable supplies to meet anticipated future demand that already sees Anbo’s seven factories in constant production. Bobby Zhou, aged 33, and Dominic Nowell-Barnes, 27, previously CEO of Posh Flooring, which he started in 2008, see the next 18 months as just the beginning of Flooring Republic’s intended dominant position in the UK flooring market with a flotation on the stock exchange as their ultimate goal. Dominic sees the acquisition of his company as providing an essential major step forward to Flooring Republic’s market leadership. ‘Digital technology has made a considerable impact on customer purchase and Flooring Republic is now the only organisation in the UK flooring market to offer the whole media and retail package of an efficient and customer conscious call centre, easy to use and attractive online store website and a nationwide network of modern, multi-functional outlets.,” he said. “We’re also the only flooring business that offers the same price regardless of which platform our customers choose to order their purchase.” Flooring Republic is already renowned for its incredible range of all types of beautiful, hard wearing flooring, working closely with many other partners and offering the taste and style that will suit every customer. The company is also the only flooring business in the UK that fulfils the environmental and sustainably sourced requirements laid out in UK timber retail regulations. Owning up to the secret of success Penthouse people are keen to keep their Lancashire mill owners happy. Especially as they often have to take these demanding and uncompromising owners home with them! Penthouse made its first carpet more than 45 years ago but when founder John Hawker retired in the 90s he was keen to keep it personal rather than just sell on the business so he worked with investors 3i to set up an employee benefit trust in 1995. Now all 80+ employees own the business and the high number of longserving family groups throughout the firm enhance that personal touch. The concept of an employee-owned business is best known in the UK in the John Lewis partnership but in fact the structure is very rare in the manufacturing sector and gives Penthouse a distinctive character that feeds right through to the quality and service that customers enjoy from the business. Jonathan Gamble, who joined the company three years ago as sales and marketing director from a major corporate firm said: “It is very different and genuinely very special. We all work for each other. Indirectly I work for the guy who drives the lorry. We all have a vested interest, everybody is a stakeholder so everybody wants to do the best they can,” he says.

“It is very different and genuinely very special. We all work for each other. We all have a vested interested, everybody is a stakeholder so everybody wants to do the best they can” This is not a sentimental attitude, it’s a key to success, he says: “The consumer market in the UK is not really growing much, if at all. So the only way we grow our business is to do it better and get the recognition for that.” The family atmosphere shines through. For example, The Stocklist met the Kavanagh family when we visited last month where Michael is one of the longest serving members of the company, with 39 years working in the factory alongside his son Damien who has just joined the company and nephew Dean who has been there for 13 years.

Newcomer Damien comments: “It’s easy to fit in quickly here. My family is here but the whole place has a family feel. Everyone’s in it together and wants to do well.” And doing well is what they do. Jonathan describes the Penthouse market position at the top of the middle segment. “We’re not in the business of chasing sales at any price. This is a premium product business with breadth and depth and we don’t stint – the yarn is premium, the latex is premium, the backing is premium.”

“We’re not in the business of chasing sales at any price. This is a premium product business with breadth and depth and we don’t stint – retailers like the reliability and fitters like fitting this kind of quality.” MD Alex Dyson adds: “Retailers like the reliability and fitters like fitting this kind of quality.” The fact that Penthouse adds a little to every cut so that no measure ever falls short is well known among savvy retailers. And every carpet also goes through five levels of inspection before it’s rolled off for retailers to take delivery. The company has been keen to keep the offer exclusive to its selected retailers. “We don’t saturate the market,” says Alex. “Penthouse offers a point of difference in this way and we are playing to our strengths as a quality manufacturer.” The latest launch is a great example. “Colorado” is a superb eighth-gauge tufted 80/20 wool carpet, crafted using a premium blend of wools specially selected to give a luxurious yet hardwearing carpet that will stand the test of time. “We spent over a year working with our spinners to get the yarn composition right, and to perfect the eighteen subtle shades, to make sure that they exactly complement current furnishing trends,” said Alex. “A lot of manufacturers don’t give retailers enough credit. But we know that our retailers really know what they want and what works for their business and it’s our job to give it to them,” he adds.

Colour is core focus for Penthouse and the company tracks interiors designs as well as running a real-time colour sales chart to see what’s trending.

Carpet&FlooringReview

New launches at Penthouse are carefully considered so rather than a blitz on range revamps and extensions every Autumn, the company develops major new offerings every year to 18 months after a lot of listening and then diligent development. Alongside quality, colour is at the core of the Penthouse proposition. As an example, the 18 colours that come with Colorado have been selected after months of attention to the detail of interior trends in fabrics and furnishings. The company also keeps a real-time colour league table to track what’s trending at any time – currently they are seeing greens, terracotta and plum colours become increasingly popular alongside the inevitable shades of grey.

Penthouse’s home town of Rochdale is where the Co-op and the Cooperative Wholesale Society was born.

The company is concentrated on serving independent retailers and it’s business emphasis is about 95% residential. The Penthouse brand is now reserved for the wool ranges – 15 of them in total, all 80/20s and all made in Britain. The Mayfield brand is only for synthetic ranges and the company has overhauled their offer to select their best five synthetic carpets. Penthouse continues to invest in the latest CMC tufting technology at its manufacturing site in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, the most recent machine being installed last Autumn. A new 3,500m2 roof has also just been built over the building which houses the tufting machinery. The family welcome in Rochdale extends to its customers, of course. Gemma Kopczyk who has worked for 14 years in the marketing department says: “It does feel special here and we encourage retailers to come in to see how it’s different – and become a closer part of the family themselves!” T 01706 341231 www.penthousecarpets.co.uk

The customer service and sales team is at the heart of Penthouse Carpets. Sales Office Manager Janice Lloyd (pictured 1st left) has seen more of it than most with 42 years service. “We’re a great team. We enjoy what we do and I think that shows through,” she says. Beyond nylon for velvets

Lano is bridging the gap between stain-resistant performance and the look of luxurious nylon velvets with Halcyon, a new fibre now featuring in two brand new styles from the Belgian manufacturer.

Specially developed for the dense and plush piles of velvet carpets, Halcyon is a solution-dyed yarn that has been engineered by the team at Lano to give softness and a silk look. The new fibre features in Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe. Featuring on a back-to-back display unit, Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe come in a palette dominated by modern tones; sophisticated greys and off-whites giving an elegant and contemporary feel to the range. Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe take full advantage of Halcyon’s exceptional softness with an exclusive and unique 13th gauge construction that brings a sumptuous feel and that sought-after velvet look. “The look of nylon is really in vogue, but it’s lack of stain-resistance and a premium price-point can be off-putting for some homeowners,” says Gary Alp, UK sales manager, Lano. “We have rectified this with the launch of Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe, each offering a velvet look and feel with the benefit of stain-resistance and an obtainable price-point.” Available in 10 colours, four and five-metre widths and with Lano’s newly developed ‘smart’ backing that combines the benefits of action and felt-backed carpets, Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe come with 10-year stain and wear warranties. Cashmere features a 1,200g/m2 pile weight, while Cashmere Luxe delivers a premium 1,720g/m2 pile. T 00800 5266 5266 www.lano.com

HarrogateGuide Balterio No ordinary floors

It has always been Balterio¹s aim to develop laminate floors that look and feel like real parquet. Over the years, Balterio has become a true master in reproducing nature in all its aspects. One of the main techniques to reproduce that natural look is the Embossed-in-Register (EIR) process in which the top structure matches the wood design perfectly. The new oaks in Tradition Quattro are best in class in EIR: they offer a deep and mat EIR surface structure in combination with a 4-sided V-groove. Another technology Balterio invested in recently is digital printing. Laminate has never been so realistic: it is virtually impossible to distinguish digital printed laminate from authentic parquet, while the surface structure feels as genuine. And there is more variation in the patterns and the planks too. The new 2.05m long plank Grande collection, available in 2 widths, is the first digital printed Balterio collection that is also waterproof: Grande can consequently be installed in kitchens and bathrooms. The subtle 4-sided parquet bevel on Grande makes this collection look just like parquet. Looking for a laminate floor that is more daring, more out of the box? Than choose Xpressions. The digital printed Xpressions laminate floors will stand out in your home: choose from a classic herringbone to a checked pattern. Hall B Stand 19 • +32 (0)56 62 80 81 •

Final for the fittest! The 6 Finalists for the Carpet Fitter of the Year 2017 competition have been selected following very closely fought semi-finals. The judges have all stated that the standard of fitting by the semi-finalists was very high again this year. The successful fitters who have progressed to the Finals taking place over 17 and 18 September in the Kings Suite at The Flooring Show in Harrogate are: Darren Ash of Alfrick, Worcestershire

Jason Draper of Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire Dan Evans of Huntingdon, Cambridgshire Rob Harper of Wigan, Lancashire

Byron Terrett of Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan

John Wright of Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire Many congratulations to them all. Anthea Turner with 2016 winner Mark Smurthwaite (centre) and Ian James of the NICF

Adam Carpets Brush with paints Adam Carpets will be presenting their latest brochure with The Little Greene Paint Company. The brochure will contain all of their Castlemead Twist and Fine Worcester Twist colours coordinated with three paints selections from the Little Greene palette. “This is a really exciting development” said Eamonn Prescott of Adam Carpets. MasterPiece Beyond measure MasterPiece Cloud has been extended beyond measuring and planning to provide costing of jobs, either in the customer’s home or in the store. Either iPad, Android or tablet PC can be used in the home, with jobs saved to the cloud. Estimates can be emailed to the customer. As well as having PDFs of the plans, the fitter benefits from an automatically generated Fitting Sheet, where it is clear who will do what to prepare for the new flooring. Responsibility for a job can be passed from salesperson to the estimator for the visit and then back to the salesperson for any revisions.

Kingsmead On-trend textures Kingsmead Carpets will be presenting the very best in its Clean Easy portfolio with stunning new textures and colours within its impressive wool rich collection. The presentation extends from the on-trend grey tones of the latest launch Weald Park, through to timeless classics such as Vitronic Plains. Along with this comes a new look website and updated POS – all reinforced by Kingmead’s longstanding commitment to working in partnership with its customers Hall C Stand 30 • 01827 831424 • www.kingsmeadcarpets.co.uk

Metro Marketing for better margins The Metro Group has been serving independent retailers for almost 40 years from the smallest oneman operation to multiple-outlet businesses. Retaining independence is vital to Metro members but being able to own brand products instore is becoming essential for independent retailers and with Metro’s Marketing Service, members can use either the Group’s own label, Carpet 1st, or take advantage of the bespoke marketing service which allows them the ability to rebrand their own stores completely or selectively. This can be done as extensively as the retailer chooses to, on-site if necessary. Hall M Stand 34 • 01204 393539 • www.carpet1st.co.uk

Feature

Voice of the trade John Duncan CHAIRMAN, CARPET FOUNDATION Does the industry need to work together more collaboratively? I would say ‘Yes’ to this, of course, wearing my Carpet Foundation hat. However, I genuinely believe the Uk carpet industry needs a ‘voice’ and a trade body. If the Carpet Foundation disappears, it will never come back. When there is an ‘issue’, be it health or damaging reporting in the papers, people call The Foundation offices and say ‘what are you going to do about it?’ While manufacturers need to keep their own identities, a ‘group’ is far more powerful and effective than a lone voice.

How would you like to see the Carpet Foundation develop in the future? I would love to see more retailers joining. Ideally 500 would be nice. Recruitment is difficult and the only foot soldiers we have are myself, andrew Stanbridge and Rupert anton – and we can’t logistically get out as much as we would like. That said, when we do, we have a 100% strike rate. We have seen in the last 18 months with our ‘remodelling’ how the manufacturers support has grown and we now account for over 70% of the Uk carpet market in value. That is some endorsement.

What is the biggest difference the Carpet Foundation makes to the industry? Take us out of the equation, and with notable exceptions like Crucial Trading and Brintons, little is done to keep carpet ‘front of mind’ with consumers. For manufacturers and suppliers, we are that insurance net, should it be needed. We also represent the industry on the global stage on technical and environmental issues. For retailers, we promote them and carpet and, with the TSI Code of Practice, provide a tangible and visible point of differentiation for our members. We also keep them and the industry abreast of wider issues. For example, the new aDR legislation that comes into effect in May next year has serious ramifications for retailers outside of the Carpet Foundation.

On a personal note, what has been the biggest change you have seen in your career? I would highlight three - the move away from woven carpet to Tufted; the growth of alternative flooring and the rise and subsequent fall of large conglomerates.

What are the key issues that will drive the flooring industry in the next 5 years? The industry perhaps needs to look ‘outside of the box’ a bit. Technology advances at a rate of knots. The internet will continue to be a challenge and someone will, one day, crack online selling of flooring. The advent of 3D printing could see consumers produce their own carpet. We might see further consolidation. I look at victoria and what they are doing – and successfully. There might be a two tier supply base of the very large producers and the small, niche producers. Those in the middle might get left behind. This could have implications for retailers too with the rise of the mega group potentially wrestling pricing control back to the manufacturer. We shall see!

What advice would you give to a young person thinking of a career in flooring? This is an area the industry needs to address. Manufacturing in this country is not ‘sexy’ and carpet manufacturing is way down the list of ‘desirable’ jobs. I don’t know but I would guess the average age of employees in Uk carpet manufacturers is north of 40. On the retail side, particularly in the independent sector, we see at the Foundation many retailers close down simply because their children do not want to come into the business. It is a big problem for the industry. It is a great industry – recognised as making the best carpet in the world – and it can be highly rewarding but we need to appeal to the younger generation. What is the best thing about the carpet industry? Unoriginal I know but the camaraderie of it. I have met some super individuals who have become lifelong friends.

If you hadn’t ended up in the industry, what might you have done? I would loved to have been a professional golfer – albeit a bad one! Honestly, I don’t know as I have known nothing but the carpet industry.

Has the flooring industry made you a better person? Margaret my wife is probably the best judge of that! What I can say is that it has provided me with a quality of life that I could never have dreamt of and I am very grateful for that. I worked hard, I loved my job – and I am now reaping the rewards of that. I am very lucky.

“The industry perhaps needs to look ‘outside of the box’ a bit. Technology advances at a rate of knots. The internet will continue to be a challenge and someone will, one day, crack online selling of flooring.” 72 September 2017

Flower on Flooring The softer side of synthetic carpet While the hardwearing and easy clean properties of synthetic carpet are well documented, there is an increasing trend for softer and design-led qualities that are finding favour with consumers, with more new options being introduced at this year's Harrogate show.

Kingsmead’s graham Harris says this growing trend has brought a new dimension to interior décor. “Serenity within kingsmead Clean Easy portfolio offers superior comfort underfoot and outstanding practicality and durability, this carpet really makes a house a home.

member, Soft Focus Heathers. The range, which comes in addition to the original plain version, was developed with 100% Finesse polypropylene for a finer ‘super soft’ handle. It uses a two fold yarn with increased filaments for the ultimate luxurious, silky feel,” Mr Cormack concludes.

Cavalier Carpets says state-of-the-art synthetic fibres used in the manufacture of its Stain-less carpets have come a long way and what was once perceived as a mere budget fibre has now become a material with its own desirable attributes.

“Using two-ply 1/10th gauge Everlon yarn, there is nothing more comforting than coming home to a kingsmead carpet. You can choose to keep it neutral or make a statement with bolder colours. as well as the luxurious feel, serenity provides sound and warmth insulation. available in 15 colour options in both 4m and 5m widths,” says Mr Harris.

The use of 100% solution dyed, two-ply, polypropylene yarns throughout its Stain-less ranges ensure they are equipped to stand up to the rigours of everyday life, yet retain a soft and luxurious feel. One of the key benefits of the use of bleach cleanable polypropylene is the inherent resistance to normal household stain hazards,

Cormar Carpets marketing director David Cormack, says: “Polypropylene has become the fibre of choice for many of today’s consumers.

“These are a cost effective solution for many and advancements in yarn production and improvements to appearance, coupled with the practical living qualities of polypropylene, have led

“This has led to a change in buying habits and the trend for softtouch, deep pile carpets continues to grow.

Lano Carpets sales manager gary alp says: “Synthetic fibres now have a stranglehold on the market and with this dominance comes a need for diversity and it’s the responsibility of manufacturers to keep innovating. “We’ve risen to the challenge with the launch of Halcyon, an engineered solution-dyed fibre that gives the look of the very best nylon styles. It deals with the two biggest concerns of nylon velvet styles, namely care and cost.

“For many it is perceived as the ‘ultimate’ fibre; soft, hardwearing and with a beautiful silken lustre. Halcyon bridges the gap between ‘standard’ stain-resistant polypropylene styles – those in our Touchdown and Essenz collections – and the nylon styles found in our premium X Collection,” says Mr alp.

Halcyon is launching in two new styles, Cashmere and Cashmere Lux, each in a palette of 10 modern tones.

Crown Floors field sales manager gavin Freebairn says: “There’s certainly a need to make sure that we offer customers a broad choice of synthetic fibres and in polyamide in Satino, we’ve got a great range with something to suit every home and pocket.

Crown Floors’ Easy Clean athena

“The bleach cleanable Easy Clean collection features some of our most popular styles in classic twist piles and coordinated stripes, as well as shaggy qualities such as athena. We’ve also seen a big growth in super-soft carpets and our Satin Soft fibre, featuring in alderley Edge, Penrose and Wilton House; brings tempting softness with the reassurance of Easy Clean performance.

“For softness and a silk-like lustre, our Satino polyamide options are well worth a look. Featuring in three styles, Satino delivers the luxury aesthetic. Though not stain-resistant, the fibre does make the most of polyamide’s strength for carpets that deliver enduring quality and competitive pricing,” Mr Freebairn concludes. For more information:

Readers’ Survey

Moths - myth or menace? Two scare stories regularly re-surface within the carpet industry – the appetite of moths to eat wool carpet and the potential flammability of synthetic fibres. Both topics generate genuine concern, occasional tabloid headlines – and some confusion! This month we’re looking at the alleged menace of moths and our survey of readers in august generated one of our larger responses for any of the topics we cover. Many respondents made the point that they have never had any complaint about moths – ever! and before the discussion of protective treatments, the consensus is that household cleanliness is at the heart of the problem and the best advice to consumers to avoid moths is to use their vacuum cleaner more often – and in more hidden places. This was summed up by a West Midlands reader: “I find that people do not clean their houses as often, or as well as they used too. Being in the flooring industry gives you very good first-hand evidence of this – spring-cleaning is a thing of the past. Moths do not like being disturbed.” graham Clark, head of marketing at British Wool commented: “We recognise that consumers consider moths to be a rising problem, some of this has been propelled by media coverage which is intended to and does scare people. However, our understanding is that it remains a relatively small issue in terms of the number of cases occurring in wool carpet and subsequently one that manufacturers are mostly treating case by case rather than introducing heavy chemical solutions that also have an impact,” he said. The rise in complaints appears to be a relatively recent phenomenon. In our survey, 46% of our respondents said complaints had gone up a lot and a retailer in Northern Ireland said: “In 27 years’ trading, this had never come to my attention but I have had four cases recently.” a similar comment from Derbyshire: “Not a mention nor evidence of moths since about 1980 and now three over the last two years.” and from Somerset: “I've been here 40 years, no-one mentioned moths until maybe five years ago – now it seems to be every other customer with a wool carpet wants to talk about it!” “The problems of moths has put several customers off purchasing wool carpets in recent years in our experience,” said a London retailer. Many respondents had some suspicion that the trend is prompted by media comment but there is concern about the impact on consumers. said moth complaints More than half of our readers said they thought the issue did put some about wool carpets were householders off wool carpet, 24% said it was a significant factor. But only 17% said that consumers often asked about moths. increasing a lot Some 73% of retailers said the issue had not discouraged them from buying and recommending wool carpets in their business. However, 45% in our survey said they specifically chose moth treated carpets when dealing with said there was some suppliers. impact on consumer

Contradictory industry information

Clear confusion came through about whether most carpets were treated for moth resistance or whether pesticide regulations had created less effective treatments or no treatments at all. 63% in our survey said they wanted more information from manufacturers about moth treatment. “We badly need more clarity from suppliers about moth treatments,” said a Home Counties retailer. “Much of the information I get from manufacturers seems to suggest they are contradicting each other,” said a retailer in Bristol. One survey respondent, an NICF master fitter, commented: “Once all wool/mix British carpet manufacturers stated on their pattern books that their carpet is mothproofed at the factory. I suspect the chemical used is now not doing the job properly or is not used at all but we need proper information on the label.” and to prove every issue has a Brexit dimension, a West Yorkshire reader added: “I understand that it's EU regulations which prevents the use of moth-proofing chemicals. Hopefully after Brexit, Uk manufacturing can again provide proper mothproofing!” Several major wool brands in the Uk state that their products are treated for moth resistance though this is less common than was once the case – water authorities have prevented many spinners from using the chemicals. Environmental concerns did feature in several of our responses. “Understand what you are risking before continuing with destroying moths. Don't destroy the planet just to keep the moths at bay. Carpet owners should vacuum their carpets more often,“ said a reader in the East of England. axminster Carpets has recently announced a new policy against the use of chemicals, preferring to offer a totally natural product that they will replace under the terms of a moth guarantee if it is damaged. Like several manufacturers, complaints are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Next month we’ll be asking wool spinners and manufacturers more about their policies on moths.

COMPANY NEWS Mixed messages from market

Strong company results vied with mixed messages from the High Street to imply that overall trade has been holding up well over the last year but something of a Summer slowdown set in for July and early august.

Reports from retail giants DFS and SCS suggest a sluggish trade due to poor consumer confidence. DFS cited “very challenging” UK market conditions which lead to a significant decline in footfall and 4% fall in sales in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year. A similar story at SCS resulted in a 5% decline in orders for the first six months of 2017.

The Office of National Statistics reported that flooring retail sales showed a month-on-month decline in July, down by 7.8% from £166.8m to £153.7m, ending a two month run of rising sales. But compared to July last year, sales were up 27% from £121m in 2016.

The British Retail Consortium’s latest report flagged a 0.7% decrease in non-food high street sales during July. “Non- food sales relapsed into negative territory as the competition heats up over a shrinking pool of discretionary consumer spending power,” said BRC chief executive Helen Dickinson. Record results from Victoria PLC were reported with a strong statement of confidence for future growth after the manufacturer stated sales were up 29% to £330m in the year ending April 1, 2017, while underlying pre-tax profit rose by 61% to £29.4m. Geoff Wilding, Executive Chairman of Victoria PLC commented: “There is a huge opportunity for Victoria to expand within the UK and overseas, via both acquisitions and organic growth. However, we will not pursue growth for growth's sake alone. "2018 will be another positive year for Victoria as we have widened our market exposure, both geographically and by product range. Although we have already more than doubled margins over the last four years, the Board feels that we can drive our expanded business even further. This will all be supported by further acquisitions - for which, shareholders can be confident, we will not overpay,” he said. The company has indicated that it now has “genuine scale in terms of carpet manufacturing” and while not ruling out further acquisitions in this area, there is likely to be greater focus now on the hard flooring business. Victoria’s UK brands include Abingdon, Interfloor, Westex, Whitestone Weavers (Gaskell Mackay, Hugh Mackay, Thomas Witter) and, of course, Victoria Carpets. Ulster Carpets has reported a second successive year of sales growth. According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 31 March 2017, total sales rose 6.7% to £68.4m from £64.1m in 2016, as the company saw increases in sales across most areas in which it trades. Gross profit also increased by 11.4% to £28.2m from £25.3m, while pre-tax profit resulted at £6.7m, a slight rise of 3% compared to profit of £6.5m recorded last year. Ulster said in its commentary to the accounts that the Brexit vote had impacted the value of sterling, which proved beneficial for the group, whilst also highlighting that the demand for its axminster products had returned to growth. During the year Ulster confirmed the acquisition of Roger Oates Design Limited, a supplier of flat weave carpets, and Griffith Textile Machines Limited (GTM), a specialist supplier to the UK textile industries, as well as confirming that the group remains on alert for future acquisition opportunities.

Headlam plc, said its sales in the first half of 2017 were up 4% to £342m. UK sales accounted for 85.9% of total revenue with like-forlike revenue growth of 2.1% reflecting a positive performance from both the residential and commercial sectors, up 2.8% and 0.5% respectively. 78 September 2017

Sad loss of super salesman

The industry was saddened in July by the premature loss of Ray andrew, aged, 54, a highly respected and popular member of the sales team at Furlong Flooring. Ray joined Furlong in 2004, starting as a driver but his enthusiasm and personality soon earned him promotion as a salesman in the company’s wood floors division. He then served for many years as the sales representative for Regency Carpets in the Yorkshire and East Lancashire territory before moving more recently across to the West Lancashire, Fylde Coast and Cumbria region. “Ray will be greatly missed at Furlong,” said Commercial Director Neil Valentine. “He has played a strong part in the development of the business with dedication and integrity and we will always be grateful for his friendship, contribution and positive attitude.” Amongst many hobbies Ray was a devoted fan of his local football team Preston North End, being a season ticket holder for many years. Neil added: “We have been inundated with messages of condolence from all over the trade and I would like to express our thanks to everyone who has paid their respects and to also extend our profound sympathy to his wife Barbara and immediate family,”

It¹s all change at Rackhams! After working in the Rackhams sales office for the last two years, Sarah Rowse is relinquishing her desk for a steering wheel and an iPad as she moves out into the wilds of Kent and Sussex. Following the promotion of former area Manager Phil Wheeler to the role of Warehouse Manager the company says the area has not been properly tended to for some months. Sarah will be out on the area full time from early September to put that right, and with a big smile, as she’s absolutely buzzing about her new challenge!! NEWS Legacy of Luxmi

Luxmi, a new collection of high-quality styles by Flair Rugs, is named after the mother of Dinesh Shah, company founder; a mark of a family-owned heritage dating back two generations. Dinesh brought his family to the UK over 50-years ago and his skill and expertise in making hand-crafted rugs from the finest materials is responsible for the Flair that we see today, providing high-quality rugs to national and independent retailers right across the UK. A curation of exclusive fine-quality styles, including the new V&A Inspired collection, Luxmi by Flair Rugs is at once a celebration of rug craft and strong values.

Lustre and luxury

at this year’s prestigious Decorex event, Louis de Poortere, will be bringing new designs and colours to its collections of rugs, as well as showcasing its Tailor Made and Les Tisse custom programmes.

With two new designs in Agadir and Babylon, the jacquard woven Bobohemian is expanded, both styles capturing the essence of a grand faded elegance that typifies the collection. Multiple layers of pattern, distressed areas and intricate stitching give these flatweave styles a truly vintage look. Agadir and Babylon come in eight sizes and four colourways each, made from a wool-rich, cotton chenille blend. Decorex will also see updates to the hugely popular Mad Men, inspired by the rapidly changing social landscape of the 1960s. Here, new colours will be introduced to the Griff and Jacob’s Ladder designs; flashes of ice blue, flame red and white on a rich black backdrop. Here cotton chenille is blended with high lustre polyester to highlight essential elements of the design, each jacquard woven in eight sizes. Alongside these new looks for the home, Louis de Poortere will give room to its custom rugs and runners programme, Tailor Made, now with ‘blind’ finishing to the stylish Haute Couture collection. Giving a neater and more sophisticated edge on custom sizes, blind finishing is ideal for working the striking pattern looks of Haute Couture into modern interior schemes; leaving a distinct edge to contrast hard textures.

“The Luxmi by Flair Rugs collection celebrates the artistry of rug making,” explains Gareth Davies, sales and marketing director, Flair Rugs. “From the finest yarn-dyed wools to hand-sculpted textures; it is a range that demonstrates our commitment to proper craft and considered design in styles exclusive to the Luxmi name.” Featuring four rugs inspired by archive patterns belonging to the V&A, made possible through the museum’s V&A Inspired licensee programme; Luxmi sees styles conceived through diverse subject matter. With designs influenced by Scandinavia’s passion for ethical living, the opulence of traditional Persian art, ancient history of the city of Cairo and even the Peruvian people’s love for the Alpaca; it’s a collection rich in culture and creativity. Available exclusively to Flair Rugs stockists, Luxmi is presented in a striking brochure and through a consumer-focused website, luxmirugs.com, with the aim to promote this as a premium collection from one of the UK’s most highly-regarded rug suppliers. “Our family-owned heritage has been key to our success and we are determined to make sure our future focus remains on the strong values that have been the route of our growth,” continues Gareth. “Luxmi is the realisation of this at the premium end of our offering, suiting independent retailers looking for high-quality ranges that appeal to a discerning customer.” With 27 designs available in a range of sizes, The Luxmi by Flair Rugs collection will be officially launched at London’s Top Drawer exhibition this September. Louis de Poortere will also give a glimpse into the future expansion of its bespoke programme with Les Tisse. Bringing custom carpet of exceptional quality, Les Tisse allows the creation of a custom pattern in collaboration with LdP’s designers, or the recolouring of 30 library designs from a standard palette. Crafted on narrow-width wilton looms in any one of three select wool qualities, Les Tisse carpets can be ready in just eight weeks, the perfect carpet for designers wanting the very best in bespoke luxury. Flooring factsheet Luxury underfoot

from Interfloor

Demand for more luxurious flooring products suitable for use in all areas of the home was instrumental in leading manufacturer Interfloor’s decision to introduce its highest density PU underlay range. Interfloor Sales Director Gary Cowley said: “The trend for increasingly luxurious and comfortable interiors means that many of our retail customers are keen to add firmer PU products to their offer. Now with our new Premium High Density range they can.” The three products in the new Premium High Density (PHD) range are all 180kg/m³ and offer superior protection for carpets that is longer lasting and better performing as well having impressive “green” credentials.

New PHD Chromium 9mm, the standout PU underlay in the range, has high performance Textron backing to give it more dimensional stability and cleaner cutting during installation as well as exceptional ‘shock absorber’ properties to help give it a longer life.

PHD Titanium 8mm and PHD Palladium 10mm have a polyethylene with reinforcing scrim backing. This backing also helps increase dimensional stability, is resistant to tearing and is easy to cut and trim. The PHD underlays boast superior heat insulation properties and have high acoustic ratings to reduce noise. They are also made from 100 per cent recycled foam. “Consumers will love the high performance features of our new PHD underlays, while fitters can’t fail to be impressed with how easy it is to install. We are sure the range will be a top choice for all areas of the home,” added Gary. For further information, please visit www.interfloor.com

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 84

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 86

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS September 2017

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 88

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 89

Flooring factsheet Carpet types Tip Sheared

Level Loop

Multi-Level Loop

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. a heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. a wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

THE STOCKLISTS September 2017

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 93
