Stain Away Collection

Despite the best intentions of the average family, unfortunate mishaps are bound to happen. And when they do, it’s best if you have some sensible StainAway carpet underfoot. This remarkable brand has been the Associated Weavers flagship for many years. But we never rest on our laurels – we’re constantly improving our offerings to give them even more family-friendly appeal. We’ve added the attractive Scorpius styles to the ultra-soft Invictus range. We’ve also introduced innovative yarn structures to the new ranges of Hercules and Hyperion. And now it’s the turn of StainAway for our designers to inject the kind of appeal that will keep it at the forefront of your store for many more years to come.

Designed for accidents

StainAway is the obvious choice for luxury, combined with the practicality of a thoroughly hard-wearing pile. These qualities make it ideal for any room in the house, from a child’s playroom to a smart dining room or living room. Newly relaunched StainAway will withstand tough treatment by all members of the family – and pets – because the bleach-cleanable 100% polypropylene construction is tough enough to take the wear, but not to show it. Styles are all multi-width variants with 10 year, 15 year or 20 year stain and wear warranties. The perfect carpet for all tastes and every situation.

Big-impact displays

To fully support the relaunch of StainAway, weʼre offering some unique, eyecatching display and merchandising systems, guaranteed to add a splash of colour to your store. The striking graphics and photography perfectly illustrate the appeal of a carpet that can withstand all the hazards that daily life throws at it. Why not buy your StainAway display stands now? Contact us on 01422 431103 or email displays@associatedweavers.co.uk alternatively contact your area manager for samples and unit prices. Get ready for the new styles from a big brand that will soon be making an even bigger impact.

KING’S CROSS & LONDON BRIDGE King’s Cross with its beautiful thatched design and London Bridge, the matching Brussels loop, are now available as cuts. Both qualities were offered on rolls for the last year but a strong response by the market has led to the launch of a cut-length service. Both qualities are produced from 100% 3-ply wool and offer excellent value for money. King’s Cross and London Bridge are available in both 400 and 500 cm widths with a colour range of six naturals. Edel Telenzo proudly produce high quality multi-ply wool loop carpets. The 100% wool Moorish, Illusion, Abstract and Sierra, along with the natural jute Herringbone and fuss-free polypropylene of Glen, are now all available in this new size, bringing homeowners sophisticated styles that are perfect for use in open living spaces. “As homeowners seek a more open way of living we’ve seen a strong growth in demand for rugs that can take up the challenge of living spaces that transcend our traditional perception of separate rooms for relaxing, dining and cooking,” explains Gareth Davies, sales and marketing director. “With the ability to stretch far beyond the ends of sofas and other focal furniture pieces, these new rugs help to create definition and add a layer of texture and colour upon often neutral hard flooring surfaces.” Available right away, these new supersize additions celebrate key looks for 2016; the North Africa inspired geometrics of Moorish, the heritage tartan of Glen and colourful linear strokes of Illusion Candy through to subtle textural offerings in Sierra and Herringbone. With so many options, there is a style sure to please every homeowner wanting a room-size rug that makes a formidable and impressive centrepiece. T 01457 850660 www.flairrugs.com

Polyflor in the park

Forest fx PUR vinyl flooring from UK manufacturer Polyflor was recently used to create striking design floors at The Pavilion on the Park, a youth and community centre in Eastleigh, Hampshire.

NEWS

Forest fx PUR vinyl flooring was installed by Tildan Construction in the centre’s Park View Café and Woodpecker Hall function room as part of Eastleigh Youth and Community Trust, Eastleigh Borough Council and Hampshire County Council’s £700,000 project to develop the Pavilion. The building hosts 28 weekly activities including music, dance, drama and exercise clubs, as well as activities for the local disabled community, so required a hard wearing floorcovering that would cope with the demands of a busy events schedule. Specified by architects Michael Weakley Associates, Forest fx PUR vinyl sheet flooring in the warm Rich Cherry shade was selected for the installation. A further four Forest fx shades - Classic Oak, Smoked Oak, Warm Beech and Mahogany – were used to create the detailed compass motifs designed by Michael Weakley Associates which sit in the centre of the café and hall floors. These bespoke compass designs were created for The Pavilion on the Park by Polyflor’s experienced in-house Design Service team using water jet cutting technology which can produce virtually any shape, pattern or logo from Polyflor’s high performance vinyl flooring. Daisy Robinson, Community Development Manager at The Pavilion on the Park commented, “We’re delighted with the finished look of the floors and we have received many positive comments.” Suitable for high traffic heavy commercial environments, the Forest fx PUR range features 14 highly realistic wood effect designs with a cross-linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement (PUR) for a low cost, polish-free maintenance regime for the lifetime of the flooring. Adhesive with heart!

Adhesives from manufacturer of subfloor preparation products, F. Ball and Co. Ltd., have been used to deliver a high quality flooring refurbishment of the British Cardiovascular Society offices in Fitzrovia, London. H.I.S. Contracts, also based in London, used a combination of Styccobond F3, a high strength flooring adhesive, and Styccobond F40, a solvent-free water-based adhesive, to give a new lease of life to the 600m2 office space. The existing carpet in the building was tired and threadbare, and was removed to make way for updated, fit-for-purpose floorcoverings. Once removed, a new rubber underlay was installed over the timber floorboarded subfloor, using Styccobond F40 high tack adhesive to secure it. By leaving the adhesive to dry to a tacky coating before installing the underlay, it forms a release bond which enables the entire floorcovering installation to be easily removed at the end of its lifetime without causing significant damage to the subfloor. Once the underlay was in place, contractors used Styccobond F3 adhesive to permanently bond a bespoke woven Axminster carpet over the underlay. David Mills, Director of H.I.S. Contracts, commented: “F. Ball products are reliable, and I can always depend on them to get the job done. F. Ball has been a market leader in the flooring industry since the beginning of my career and they continue to be a brand that I trust. Whatever the nature of the job I know that, with F. Ball, I can be confident of a high standard, professional finish.” T 01538 361633

A West Midlands reader was unequivocal: “Leaving will mean major expect little uncertainty in terms of pricing on everything that is not sourced 100% in the UK, and for every floorcovering business that would be a disaster.” business impact A reply from Northern Ireland agreed: “Currency issues, increased tariffs, regulations and paperwork will follow if UK walks away. Significant increases in cost will either lead to decreased profits or increased prices forecast damaging for consumers leading to less demand.” But others stood this argument on its head: “Leaving the EU may uncertainty resurrect the carpet manufacturing in the UK with import duties that will be levied at the European manufactures can only be a benefit to our industry,” said a respondent from Lancashrire. “The UK is well served say not enough by home grown manufacturers and it is possible that a leave vote may have a positive impact on these businesses within the home market debate about business particularly if there are difficulties in agreeing trading terms with Europe,” agreed a respondent from the South. However, in our survey the overwhelming opinion was that the outcome predict boost in of the vote will not be so dramatic – 60% said they expected little or no impact on their business prospects whichever way the vote went and confidence after vote that pre-referendum, consumer confidence was not being affected. Free trade was a concern to many. “Uncertainty is bad for business and bad for consumer confidence. It would be crazy to throw out the benefits of free trade for both imports and exports,” said a Worcestershire reader. “Only time will tell but to our own business free trade between EU members is essential. Who wants to revert back to how it was,” said a business in West Yorkshire. A London reader went further: “We should remember UK was a basket case in the 70's and joining the common market helped in many ways. If we are not in it will undermine this position massively and long term the country will suffer.” But a comment from Kent was: “We're the 5th largest economy in the World. We import more than we export. Do we honestly think our Continental neighbours would turn their backs on our business?” Another reader from Cornwall added: “The EU is a huge drain on the resources of the British people the sooner we are out the better.” Most respondents felt they were well informed on the issues around membership but a massive 83% complained that there was too much focus on migration and sovereignty and not enough discussion about business issues during the campaign. However, while we only asked about business issues, many of our soapbox commentators wanted to offer more political views. “This referendum is NOT about business. It is about having democratic accountability of the people who govern us,” said a North West reader. “We do not like dictats from bureaucrats from either the UK or the EU. We have been a democracy a lot longer than most countries in Europe and I do not want to surrender any more of our sovereignty,” said a respondent from Somerset. “Unity is key to our future strength in a very uncertain world that we live in,” said a pro-stay reader in North Yorkshire, but unity of opinion is in short supply – at least until after June 23. After that, it will be another story!

Flower on Flooring The brave new world of vinyl flooring There has been a notable acceleration in the number of new collections introduced to the vinyl flooring sector, many of which are included in our latest study below.

wineo's Highland Light

Innovation is evident in many areas, such as wineo's ambra, featuring three installation types in just one collection. This incorporates 22 designs, such as wood and stone, with options for installation including gluing, click and click as a multi-layer, available with a 0.3mm wear layer.

The company states that ambra allows different flooring heights to be connected with the same flooring decor, with ambra offering "an unbeatably versatile flooring collection".

Wineo further explains its 2mm glue option provides low construction height and is a suitable permanent solution for wet areas. Its 4.5mm click is ideal for reinstallation areas, using Silent Comfort to adjust minor unevenness with little preliminary work required.

The stable core board of the 9mm multi-layer option also absorbs unevenness, with SoundProtect providing pleasant room acoustics. Multi-layer additionally delivers high dimensional stability and is particularly suited for areas with large windows.

Amtico says that as well as walls, the floor is increasingly a surface for patterns, such as simple, contemporary oaks and limed grains in larger scale planks in herringbone or parquet, adding subtle impact. Brave consumers are embracing multiple tones of colour in one pattern, such as shades of grey woods for contemporary effect.

Amtico Classic Oak

The company predicts more exciting developments in 2016, such as tints and inks influencing products, with hand-painted lines and shapes combining craft and technology.

"Colour in flooring is changing for us. Clever colour balanced neutrals mean you can use a ‘grey’ wood in a kitchen or bedroom and it’s neither too warm nor too cold. Without giving away our secrets, it’s a real skill to achieve, found in the details of a design," says Amtico.

The Cavalio Projectline collection of luxury vinyl tiles for commercial environments features a number of rustic wood effect designs reflecting the growing trend for reclaimed wood flooring.

Projectline contains impressive weathered wood designs which feature imperfections and age-worn details, bringing a sense of history to commercial interiors whilst providing the benefits of high performance vinyl flooring, the company states.

The Rustic Pine designs in white and blue have a painted effect which contrast with warm, natural wood grain to create a contemporary finish. The collection also includes vintage sawn wood designs such as Hand Scraped Wood Brown and Vintage Wood Grey, which feature a cross sawn wood texture to recreate the look of aged timber which complements industrial-themed interior design schemes.

Quick-Step says its new Pulse luxury vinyl collection uses a revolutionary production method to recreate visual authenticity, and is also hard-wearing, water-tight, warm, sound-absorbent and entirely free of phthalates.

Quick-Step - Pulse luxury vinyl collection

As wooden flooring continues its popularity, the company has developed a new vinyl generation that combines aesthetically pleasing designs with increased practicality. Modern technology has seen faux designs become fully accepted, such as Quick-Step Laminate's scorched black Impressive Burned plank that would have been impossible to create with real wood, it says.

The company opened a new production unit last year that allows it to match wood grain textures, while removing restrictions on creativity. With oak continuing as a firm favourite, the new Quick-Step Pulse collection features 20 designs that correspond to the latest interior decorating trends.

Beauflor reports it has given its Ultragrip brand a complete refresh with eyecatching new colourways and stylish imagery for its Buzz, Project, Gallery and Magnum designs.

All Ultragrip cushion vinyl floor coverings are slip resistant, hardwearing, hygienic and easy to clean, the company states, and are also soft underfoot and quiet to walk on.

Ultragrip Buzz introduces a touch of nostalgia, inspired by ancient Portuguese ceramics and sumptuous Victorian patterns, with a beige, grey and blue colour palette for kitchens or bathrooms, while Project is ideal for utility rooms or for an edgy and modern touch in any room.

Ultragrip range by Beauflor

Ultragrip Galaxy features woods and tiles in a contemporary grey and beige colour palette and Magnum offers authentic looking tile and wooden floor effect finishes for an attractive alternative for any room in the house, says Beauflor.

Karndean Designflooring sales director Scott Cochrane highlights the trend of homeowners "looking to bring the outdoors in", aiming to create clutter-free spaces and improve well being by replicating the look of real wood and stone.

"Inspired by nature, we’ve added 12 new wood plank designs to our popular Van Gogh collection. Tapping into the trend for reclaimed natural wood materials, the four groups – French Oaks, American Redwood, Scottish Beech and Mexican Cypress - replicate the unique look that comes from the transformation of wood over time, in addition to processes such as burning, liming and smoking. Taking the collection to 32 wood designs, we’ve ensured there’s a grain and colour palette to suit any home décor," says Mr Cochrane. Karndean plans to extend its stone collection, while also taking inspiration from weathered steel, natural stone and woven fabric for further new introductions.

Aspecta Flooring says that Aspecta Ten is one of its latest introductions, designed exclusively for the contract market to be highly durable, easy to install and maintain and 100% waterproof. It features innovative Isocore technology to combine a high level of strength in a lightweight product.

A multi-layered, 10mm thick LVT click flooring system, it consists of high-density PE foam and extruded structural PVC with a 0.7mm LVT wear layer on top.

It is available in sizes of 22 x 151cm, 45 x 90cm and 23 x 183cm. The third variation, the XXL plank, is unique in the UK click flooring market, the company states.

In addition, the range of 34 designs provides a high level of flexibility. Specifiers can choose from wood, stone and leather-look finishes, all in natural colours. continued overleaf...

Flower on Flooring The brave new world of vinyl flooring continued from previous page Earthwerks, the LVT brand within the family-owned Swiff-Train of America, says the ongoing strong trends in vinyl are for natural and authentic structures and surfaces; decors that are exceptionally close to nature, rustic and reclaimed designs that emulate ageing and use, and traditional bond laying patterns, such as herringbone.

Earthwerks presents Country Look

Particularly noteworthy are its Country Look and StyliT, the company states. Country Look features pronounced colour shades across single planks; with variation that emphasises the true and unique wood character of the floor, recreating an example of authentic and real effect wood flooring.

StyliT is the company's latest design flooring to feature a plank size that is ideal for traditional wood block designs, such as herringbone, brick bond or stagger bond, that exude old world elegance and charm.

IVC Leoline and Avenue product manager Victoria Hemelaer notes the dominance of grey, even on wood and stone effect vinyl flooring. “But we are also seeing some macro-trends coming through that look like they’ll be big news in the years ahead," she says.

“Scandi is certainly a big influence in interior design, but this is not Ikea generation style, a more sophisticated take that’s certainly got a more heritage vibe. Weathered and rustic looks such as Leoline’s Woodmark Azur and Cardassian work well. Traditional parquet looks are also perfect, so styles like Toulouse, again from Woodmark, work beautifully."

Ms Hemelaer also notes, "parrot colours and jungle prints" appearing on the high street, requiring rich and dark woods with strong grains and colour variation to tie everything together.

Leoline’s rustic Woodmark Azur

With macro-trends becoming key style influencers, she says her company's Leoline and Avenue brands are "packed full of options to get these hot new looks”.

J2 Flooring also notes that grey shades are "slowly overtaking" the most popular oak shades. Although traditional warmer tones sell well, the mellow, modern, neutral appearance of greys and pale oaks prove excellent backdrop colours. "We have two exciting new shades coming in the next few months: a light pale limed oak shade called bleached oak; and appointed driftwood is our fresh, white plank. These are both available on our concise display unit," the company states.

Moduleo, managing director David Bigland says his company's ability to quickly respond to customer requirements is reflected in its Moods collection. "The much-anticipated range offers customers a creative studio in which they can combine 10 brand-new flooring formats. Up to 110 unique wood and stone-effect designs can be created using the wide range of tile shapes available, including hexagons, chevrons, triangles and diamonds, as well as traditional squares and rectangles," he says. Aspecta Flooring presents Aspecta Ten

"Moduleo Moods is as unique as our customer’s requirements. Bespoke designer flooring has seen a huge surge in popularity over recent months, and Moduleo Moods puts intricate and stylish flooring design at our customer’s fingertips for the first time," says Mr Bigland.

Moduleo Moods offers "unparalleled" flexibility to create bespoke design-led flooring solutions for a variety of applications, he concludes. For more information: Amtico Aspecta Flooring Cavalio Earthwerks Karndean Designflooring Leoline Quick-Step wineo Beauflor

Feature: 60th Anniversary of Cormar Carpets

Impressive growth

The market leader celebrates 60 years of success It’s not about being one of the oldest carpet companies in the UK or even the biggest - it’s only about aiming to be the best, says Cormar as it celebrates its sixtieth anniversary. And retailers agree. Cormar is the industry’s most prolific award winner –the Supplier of the Year with buying groups Flooring One and Metro for the 11th and 16th times last year, for example! “Our success is based on what we do today and tomorrow – but the way we do it is based on long-established values that work for the way our retailers want to do business,”says marketing director David Cormack. It all began in Bury 60 years ago when David’s father, Neville Cormack, decided to branch out from the family business Greenwood and Coope, first founded by his father in 1924 to supply bindings and felts to the shoe and slipper trade in Lancashire. In 1956, Neville founded Cormar Carpets with some of the first tufting machines to come into the UK – manufacturing at Nunn Hills Mill, Stacksteads, where the first machines produced a 54" wide carpet. Cormar moved to its current base in Brookhouse Mill, Greenmount, in 1959 and Holme Mill in Ramsbottom in 1973. Neville Cormack OBE died in 2013, aged 83. Today, there are 23 tufting machines at the Holme Mill site which produce over 12 million sq metres of Cormar carpet a year. In the last five, post-recession years, Cormar has grown its turnover from £75m to £105m. That is all organic growth - an impressive achievement in a highly competitive market. “None of this happens by accident,” MD David Judge points out. “We have to be smart. We need not just a ‘can do’ attitude but a ‘can do better’ attitude. We are very impatient with ourselves to improve all the time.”

38 May 2016

Complacency can be the curse of a market leader but it’s not even in the dictionary for Cormar Carpets. Sustained investment in every aspect of the business has created a momentum that sustains the company’s top position. The key example is the absolute commitment to service. 90%+ of deliveries from the industry’s largest fleet of 70+ are made to retailers are made within 48 hours - 98% on time. “Only a few leading companies can invest in the systems and logistics that can deliver this level of service, this successfully,” says David Judge. “The tempo of this business is incredibly high but we deliver and retailers trust us to deliver.”

“The tempo of this business is incredibly high but we deliver and retailers trust us to deliver.” While this level of service is exceptional in the carpet sector, in other market sectors, suppliers like Amazon and Next have ensured that consumers’ service expectations are incredibly high. Cormar’s online portal plays an increasing role in ensuring retailers can make the right promises to their customers. Launched three years ago, the portal now handles over 20% of Cormar’s business, allowing retailers to check stock, make orders and track deliveries 24/7. “Our role is to help retailers look good in front of their customers,” says David Cormar. “The portal is fantastic – truly leading the market – but we are impatient with this too, There is room for improvement,” he says. Just how serious they are is revealed by Cormar’s high level of investment in the project and the appointment of a customer experience manager to ensure the portal’s accessibility is as positive as it possibly can be. Demonstrating their professional maturity, Cormar takes a more measured view on product launches than some in the sector. “There is always a lot happening in product development but we take a very considered view of new product launches – making sure we can really service the new range as soon as it is out,” says David Judge. “We look for a comprehensive portfolio rather than new products for new products sake.”

Carpet&FlooringReview

“Our success is based on what we do today and tomorrow – but the way we do it is based on long-established values that work for the way our retailers want to do business.”

The PP business has grown substantially in the last five years as retailers confidence has grown with the fibre – especially the quality end of the synthetic market. The launch of the Sensation collection five years ago in Cormar’s own two ply Luxelle soft polypropylene is described as a “game changer” by Cormar – setting a new agenda in soft touch synthetics. While the style has been much mimicked ever since that launch, Sensation is still a growing business for Cormar, kept alive with continuous development including the most recent Sensation Supreme. But wool is still at the heart of the business and remains a focus of innovation with recent launches such as the wool loops, Bouclé Neutrals and Malabar Two-fold, as well as the recolouration of the popular multi-weight Oaklands Wool Twist Collection. Overall Cormar has an illustrious past, but its focus is on a future of sustained success. Leadership is hard won and Cormar has earned its place. from The Stocklists

THE CAMPAIGN FOR WOOL INTERNATIONAL CARPET & RUG AWARD WINNERS 2016 The first Awards in recognition of design, quality and innovation within the carpet and rug industry were held at the end of March at Stamford Bridge, London. There were over one hundred entries across the fifteen categories and the standard of entry was very high. The Judges John Bain, formerly Design Director of Brintons, Textile Consultant Malcolm Sims, Tim Booth of British Wool, Giles Kime of Homes & Gardens, Rhoda Parry of Country Homes & Interiors and Katie Hallett of Homes & Antiques - considered the entries to be an extremely high standard. “ We felt it was time that our carpet and rug industry and the many people working in it, had a moment of glory for its significant design, quality, manufacturing skills, creative marketing and its loyal passion for wool. Often flooring is the forgotten story of home interiors - but as these entries and winners show - the performance and enduring strengths and story of wool in carpet and rugs is dynamic and has a lot to offer.” Bridgette Kelly of the Campaign for Wool said. AT CHELSEA FOOTBALL CLUB STAMFORD BRIDGE 23RD & 24TH MARCH 2016

Premier league fixture Wool supporters get promotion at Stamford Bridge. Wool carpet raised it’s game with the debut of a smart new show in the heart of designer London – the first dedicated flooring show in the capital for decades. Wool Floor Show London played out at the Stamford Bridge stadium of Chelsea, just a week after London Design Week in nearby Chelsea Harbour, to set the agenda for fashionable flooring.

The event, aimed at Southern retailers as well as the interiors and commercial trade was hosted by the British Wool Marketing Board and the Campaign for Wool and attracted more than 20 leading brands in the business. “This is a top event – a really great wool showcase,” said Martin West of Kingsmead Carpets and Chris Adam of Adam Carpets added: “The British Wool people have done a fantastic job to create an event of this standard. This is really what the trade needs and the show is attracting the right kind of people.”

The event included a series of superb design installations showing some of the best flooring products in wool as well as technical features about natural fibre performance.

Organiser Bridgette Kelly said: “We wanted to bring the whole wool industry together in Central London in a way that has never been done before. We are trying to raise the game of the industry with a modern fresh look.”

“The quality of exhibitors is very high and we are getting a good mix of visitors from both the retail trade, group buyers, designers and specifiers,” she said.

The premier league venue added glamour to the occasion with visitors having the opportunity to walk out onto the terraces to look over Chelsea’s hallowed turf – though a flock of plastic sheep (in team colours!) brought in to graze on the pitch were relegated to the touchline by sensitive groundsmen!

The event also hosted a glamorous awards dinner which attracted a large volume of entries for carpets and rugs in design, innovation and environmental categories (see page 42-43 for results). There was also a seminar program majoring on trend forecasting from leading designer Jessica Light and online marketing tips from Social Media Training Solutions.

Wool Floor Show London is looking for promotion next season in what is hoped will be an annual fixture for the flooring industry. Read our reports on pages 45 – 49

Capital collections Manx Carpets Manx made a debut with new Farringdon, a 100% wool 3-ply loop in 4 and 5m and in 10 contemporary colours reflecting market trends and the call for more texture on the floor. Graham Harris said “There is a strong appetite for textures in carpet at the moment – especially in the South but increasingly across the country. Wool loop continues to outshine twist to give retailers a little more differentiation to discuss with consumers.” Also on show was the new Natural Tones, a 50/50 3-ply wool blend in 10 colours which builds on the success of Manx’s Natural Shades and Natural Plains twist collection. Pandora Plains, a deep pile 80/20 in 4 weights up to 60 oz was also showing in a range of new colours including more greys and taupe alongside a fresh set of beige and neutrals. Distinctive by design Flying the flag Adam Carpets

There is no better demonstration of the quality of undyed wool than Adam’s striking Union flag floor on the stand at Chelsea, carefully cut from their new 80/20 Pure Brit collection which was launched two months ago. Using blends from up to four breeds of sheep, the undyed yarn has that subtle lustre of British wool across a range of 10 colours. Given that the colourbank is ‘constrained’ by nature, it is the happiest of coincidences that these greys and neutral tones are so strongly in line with market tastes of the moment.

Cavalier Carpets

Cavalier are a quiet but formidable force in design-led product development and the Chelsea event demonstrated their success. The company’s distinctive Gemini range which cleverly combines velvet and twist yarns into a subtle pattern won the event’s Award for Design Innovation from Homes & Gardens magazine. Cavalier also won Commercial Carpet Design Installation for Premier Inns. The latest in this line of interesting ideas is Classic Herringbone, a 36oz 80/20 twist in 8 colours which capitalizes on the fashion for the herringbone designs which have been such a strong phenomenon in smooth flooring over the past year.

“Pure Brit has a great story behind it,” says Chris Adam. “It’s British wool processed through a British scourer and a British spinner and made in Kidderminster. The depth of colour and its wool performance are making this a real winner for us.”

Cavalier contract rep Melanie Walker (pictured) said: “We have started to do very well with this in the contract sector but there has been a great reaction from retailers too who see this as an ideal product especially for stairs and landings.”

Inspirational Wool Carpet Trade Showcase 23rd & 24th March 2016 at Chelsea Football Club

Supporters join the club Ball & Young

Every football club appreciates its supporters and the Chelsea event was no exception when it came to underlay. “One or two people were wondering what a carpet underlay company is doing in the middle of a wool show but we wanted to emphasise the supporting role that underlay plays in delivering a great carpet experience,” says Ball & Young’s Ann Shaw. “It’s important to support quality with quality - and customer satisfaction is greatly enhanced when the installation includes a luxury underlay.” To mark the event, the company swapped its trademark display of trendy teddies display for a line-up of woolly lambs! T 01536 200502 www.underlay.com

First team fixture Hugh Mackay

Hugh Mackay ran out their first team for the fixture at Stamford Bridge with strong support for last year’s star signing Durham Twist – a launch that revamped the carpet collections at the company, rolled out in the distinctive new strip of black POS and sophisticated pattern books. Durham Twist is an 80/20 British Wool carpet in three weights and a grand total of 60 shades. “Just six months after the launch, Durham Twist is doing better than all the three ranges it replaced,” says Vince Holden. “Retailers have really got behind the range and the quality of the merchandising that supports it is winning strong business.” To keep people flocking to wool, the company is rolling up a sheep with every carpet delivered to consumers – well almost! In a new initiative starting this month, a leaflet is rolled up with each cut length telling consumers about wool and it’s care - and inviting them to apply for a free cuddly toy lamb. The way of grey Kingsmead Carpets

It’s grey that carries the day at Kingsmead Carpets as they add more and more of the on-trend shades across their ranges. The company saw the opportunity early and last year’s launch of their provocative Shades of Grey multi-range pattern book was recognised by British Wool judges who awarded it their Creative Marketing Initiative Award at the Chelsea event. Visitors got a preview of two of the new ranges that are reflecting this colour theme with the launch of Dumfries, an 80/20 in two weights and 12 grey and beige colourways, and the imminent launch of wool loop Berber Trio which rolls out next month. Berber Trio offers an attractive set of “almost-a-pattern” textured options in 100% 3-ply wool in six colours and three styles, a rib, a Brussels loop and the basket weave. Other recoloured ranges also reflect the latest trends including Stoddard Suffolk Berber, Perthshire and Vitronic Plains. T 01827 831424 www.kingsmeadcarpets.co.uk

Myth & Moor and more

Axminster Carpets

“Axminster is all about wool and the company is flying high,” says Hilary Clements. “We’re really excited about the launch of Myth & Moor which has got off to a great start.” Myth & Moor is an 80/20 collection of 12 woven plaids which has just started sampling to great acclaim in the industry. The colourways are some of the most contemporary in the market for plaids with a strong set of subtle greens, pale greys and blues to please the fashionistas. Optimism at Axminster is palpable since the deal with leading wool merchant H Dawson Wool of Bradford in February secured their future – and reinforced the company’s impeccable credentials at the heart of the wool carpet industry. Icing on the cake at Chelsea was an award from the judges as winner of the Residential Woven Carpet Award for the Royal Borough Wilton Collection which made such a distinctive impact in 2015. Smart suckers SEBO

SEBO has increasing success in the UK in selling class-leading vacuum cleaners that enhance the quality and professionalism of retailer’s in-store offer. Adding an extra sales opportunity to the retailer’s portfolio, the SEBO business model makes it easy. Typically the store buys the first model at a discounted rate for customer demonstrations and then SEBO fulfills the orders on behalf on the retailer – avoiding stock and delivery issues. SEBO’s flagship cleaner the X4 Pet Boost has become the firm favourite with a top range of features including computer-controlled floor adjustment, charcoal filters to remove pet odours and now an extra ‘Boost’ option to get even closer to the carpet. The company has been gathering a number of accolades recently including being shortlisted as Which magazine’s Brand of the Year and winning the IER Best Floorcare Product award. Custom satisfaction Bronté Carpets

Any width, any colour sounds like the ultimate custom carpet offer for posh people but Bronté have changed their emphasis to explain just how powerful the concept can be in real installations, saving money and waste. New graphics on POS material major on the ‘made-to-plan’ approach and Sales Manager Andrew Broughton showed us a recent installation in Central London which had a dog-leg layout which would conventionally have required 28m2 of carpet and required just 13.9m2 when custom made by Bronté. The potential cost savings in a quality carpet are substantial – added to which are the benefits of no joins, easier fitting, less décor damage from roll handling and, of course, less waste. Custom made for customer satisfaction! T 01282 862736 www.brontecarpets.co.uk May 2016 47

Diverse in city Edel Telenzo

The debut of Liberty in the market this year has been a well deserved success for Edel Telenzo and that was further recognized by the judges in Chelsea who rewarded the range with the Best Residential Tufted Carpet prize. Liberty is a two-tone loop in eight plain colours which coordinates with Diversity, one of the most interesting stripes available which has a subtle pattern in three colourways and a unique woven look. Edel Telenzo celebrated the metropolitan occasion with two capital launches, London Bridge, a 3-ply Brussels loop and Kings Cross with a thatched design. These ranges have been offered on rolls for the last year but a strong response has led the company to launch a cut-length service. T 01422 374417 www.edeltelenzocarpets.co.uk

Table manners Undyed pride Brockway

Brockway is celebrating the success of Rare Breeds – both in terms of the growth in sales since its launch last year and the recognition received from the Chelsea judges as the British Wool Award winner for its impeccable environmental credentials. Rare Breeds is an undyed pure wool range which derives 10 colours from the clever blending of up to 10 breeds of sheep – all the natural and grey colours that the market loves so much at the moment. Its clever construction also creates an attractive mottled effect that ensure Rare Breeds looks as natural as it is.

Crucial Trading

Chelsea is home ground for creative Crucial Trading which has its own retail store nearby, close to Chelsea Harbour with all its designery clientele. Natural to its core, Crucial’s wool collections offers a wide range of sophisticated options which can be relied on for a distinctive difference in design, textures and weaves. The company’s point-of-sale is also well known for its unique style and presentation and at the British Wool event, the company showed a prototype of a stunning ‘consultation table’ with an eclectic variety of carpet samples embedded in the surface, cleverly repeated in the style of the vertical wall displays.

Finally, the carpet has Brockway’s revolutionary Envirobac system, an eco-friendly carpet backing that makes the carpet easier to transport and fit.

The table allows for considered, creative discussions with consumers across the surface while larger samples and variations on all the ranges are stored in narrow drawers immediately below to be brought out as required – a savvy approach far removed from the chore of talking to a customer across a moving tombola while thumping through the samples!

Tip sheet Woolsafe

Chelsea colours Ulster Carpets

Woolsafe are spreading the message on the cleanability of natural fibre with a new leaflet that retailers can give to their customers with every sale – leaflets can even be printed with your own brand and contact details.

Ulster has an uncompromising approach to developing its wool loop collection. “If we do something, we want to do it very well,” says Jeremy Wilson. “In wool loop our aim is to be the best, and be known for that.”

The handy pocket sized leaflet has tips to keep carpets clean and then includes Woolsafe’s comprehensive guide to spot removal for 33 common stains with a step-by-step guide to take action. “Having the leaflet to hand gives both the retailer and consumer confidence to buy wool before and after the sale,” says Woolsafe’s Steve Bakker. The leaflets cost just £45 for a pack of 250 and larger quantities can be locally branded and become even more cost effective.

Loop sales at Ulster have increased from just 5% three years ago to 15% today and it’s a sector that continues to grow. A statement of intent is the launch of six new colours in Dubai - a super clean, dense construction in New Zealand wool. Also on show in Chelsea were the fashionable new colours which have been introduced into flagship 80/20 wilton ranges such as York and Grange and the company was also previewing new shades for the immaculate Ulster Velvet range which will be introduced later this year.

Woolsafe are also involved in the launch of Enco Environmental Certification, a new approval scheme to ensure that cleaning products meet both performance and safety criteria as well as strict environmental criteria. Products are tested and certified at the laboratories of Enco Global Testing Services in Bradford.

Ulster’s new rug service has started strongly since it’s launch at the beginning of this year. All the company’s Boho, plains and plaids ranges can be cut to custom sizes and bound in a selection of top quality edgings – the plaids are doing particularly well and Ulster has a neat trick on ensuring the patterns is always centred regardless of the size of the piece.

NEWS Record-breaking recycling

Recofloor members celebrated their record-breaking vinyl recycling achievements at the scheme’s fifth annual awards event at Old Trafford, the Home of Manchester United. Flooring companies, contractors and distributors have collected more than 2,700 tonnes of vinyl flooring – including 508 tonnes in 2015 alone - since the UK takeback scheme was founded by leading flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro in 2009 to divert waste material from landfill. The main winners were Carpets ‘N’ Carpets Ltd, 3D Flooring Supplies/ MCD Wales/ Flooring Accessories, S&D Flooring Specialists Ltd, STS Flooring Distributors Ltd, Fantasy Flooring Ltd, Mezmirizin Flooring Ltd, Birch Distribution and Branagan Flooring Services. Winners received their trophies and certificates from guest host and former Southampton and England footballer Matt Le Tissier who was clearly impressed and commented: “Manufacturers collaborating in this way to improve the sustainability of their products must be unique. It’s fantastic for the environment: a win-win situation!” Intense competition in all eight award categories, plus the volume and high quality of entries, made the judging a difficult process. Entries were judged mainly on last year’s achievements, while also recognising collectors’ significant contributions in various ways. Key speakers from the flooring industry included Richard Catt, CEO of the Contract Flooring Association and Ian James from FITA. Richard commented: “Sustainability and waste management are extremely important to our industry and Recofloor makes a significant contribution. Winning a Recofloor award is an achievement that is growing in recognition and an important addition to any company’s profile. So congratulations should go to all the winners – particularly the significant number who are CFA members!” T 0161 355 7618

Get a Brit grip

Interfloor has revamped its Gripperrods carpet gripper range to give retailers a highly competitively priced British-made quality product that stands out from the competition.

Interfloor's ‘Regular' carpet gripper is now being manufactured as ‘Gripperrods Standard' gripper at its Dumfries factory using high quality birch wood and is engineered to give a technically superior performance compared to alternative products. The entirely UK made gripper range means customers will benefit from improved quality as well as knowing they will be supporting local industry and reducing the environmental impact associated with Chinese production.

QUICK FACTS Every year Interfloor's Dumfries factory consumes: • Over 2,000 tonnes of birch plywood • Almost 100 tonnes of pins (that's 900m pins!) • Over 82 tonnes of nails (that's 170m nails!)

The differentiated Gripperrods range now has improved branded packaging and POS and comprises four products: Gripperrods Standard, a competitively priced entry level gripper; Gripperrods Tackfast, the best-selling gripper; Gripperrods Professional, a top of the range gripper, which is best in class; and Gripperrods Contract, a wider gripper for more specialist commercial applications. The Gripperrods Professional and Gripperrods Tackfast products include a number of new features designed to give greater stability in all types and qualities of sub-floor. Both have improved specifications including wider strips (27.11mm and 24.03mm), and more floorholding pre-nails and precision pins per length. "By bringing manufacturing of our entire range back to the UK we can guarantee quality and service. This, coupled with the enhanced specification of the premium products, makes us confident that the new Gripperrods range provides clear benefits for both retailers and installers looking for quality products at an affordable price and which offer unbeatable performance," said Interfloor CEO John Cooper. If the gripper made every year was laid in a long line, it would reach almost three quarters of the way round the world! T 01706 213131 www.interfloor.com

Obstacle course

Even the most experience hardened installer can gain new skills when they take up the challenges faced at the Academy for Excellence in Flooring.

With 12m2 square bays full of obstacles such as sinks, toilets, angles, stairs, curved walls and more; there are plenty of challenges to face as you conquer tests in the Master Installer programme to become a certified Quick-Step installer. “We’ve trained professionals at every skill level, from brand new recruits to battle scarred veterans and everyone has been able to learn and improve their skills,” says Lee Thompson, Academy for Excellence in Flooring.“Many time-served installers are surprised by the restrictions we place on ‘everyday’ tools such as tape measures, tapping blocks and hammers, instead employing new techniques to provide a better quality end result. “In fact, most are truly surprised when we reveal that you can install pretty much any area, including notoriously difficult obstacles such as stairs, with nothing more than your hands, a pencil, some paper, a saw and two pieces of laminate. Of course, there is some insider knowledge that helps, but that’s only revealed to our course goers!” Response to the courses at the Academy for Excellence in Flooring has been impressive, even from experienced professionals, with one particular individual surprised at just how easy installing laminate on stairs could be, something he’d shied away from in the past. The Academy is now taking bookings for 2016 courses including Master Installer, Level 1, Measuring & Quoting and Wood Sanding & Finishing. T 0161 877 6955 www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Smart in store Crown Floors With new tombola and lectern displays, Crown Floors will be heading to the Buying Groups National Flooring Show next month armed with a range of display options for stores of all size and layout. A new tombola featuring 74 different styles in a compact footprint is sure to be a highlight of the brand’s stand. Bringing together Crown Floors Easy Clean ranges, made from soft and bleach cleanable polypropylene in a range of on-trend styles, the tombola is wrapped in gorgeous graphics.

Audacious design Louis de Poortere Louis de Poortere returns to Cranmore Park to showcase its latest in rug and broadloom to retailers from across the country. Mad Men, Mosaiq and Haute Couture collections take centre stage this year, Louis de Poortere taking its extensive portfolio to new levels with bold new developments for both the domestic and contract sectors.

Crown Floors will also be showing its new-look single-sided lectern, housing individual ranges from across its collection. Presenting key colours in large 40x60cm samples, the lectern also provides hanging room for a swatch book (hung on the reverse). A small footprint and low weight means this new lectern is highly adaptable, an ideal solution for stores with fast-changing layouts. “Changing layouts can help to keep stores looking fresh and it is certainly necessary to make sure the floor plan is working at its best in key seasonal changes and during peak sales periods,” says James Caldwell. T 0800 0773301 www.crownfloors.co.uk

For the SS16 season, the Belgian manufacturer has introduced Mad Men, a collection jam-packed with audacious design inspired by characters responsible for some of America’s most recognisable brand images. Woven in cotton chenille and high gloss polyester, Mad Men is a modern departure from Louis de Poortere’s largely vintage stable, presented in three bold looks: Skyscraper, Jacob’s Ladder and Griff. In sister collection Mosaiq, Louis de Poortere’s new-found contemporary edge is played upon once more with tribal geometrics fashioned in five vibrant colourways. From Red Max to Blue Jeans, Mosaiq is a statement choice for a spectrum of residential settings, this time produced in 100% cotton chenille. Completing this exciting trio of introductions, Haute Couture represents Louis de Poortere’s latest in wall-to-wall carpet, a collection boasting extraordinary wool and wool-blends for use across sectors. In Haute Couture, guests will be treated to a unique touch and feel at this year’s Buying Groups National Flooring Show, the like of which only possible through use of Jacquard Wilton looms. Looking ahead Carpet Foundation Fresh from the success of their ‘digital initiative’ which has seen members get the best of out of their websites, the Carpet Foundation is set to introduce a ‘retail only’ part to their own website. The dedicated section will include various marketing support materials, a blog, trade and technical support papers and documentation as well as material for retailers to use with their local newspapers. The Show will also see the launch of a charitable tie up with the Guide Dogs for the Blind. The Carpet Foundation will donate a percentage of the revenue generated from all new members signing up to the charity. Commenting on the new plans, Chief Executive Andrew Stanbridge said: “We always have to look ahead and refresh our box of tricks. Communicating with our retail members has been a personal bugbear of mine and I am convinced that the new dedicated site for retailers will enable us to improve in this area but also provide our members with items of real value for them and their business. “I am also fully aware that there is a misconception as to the true cost of CF membership. The reality is that it costs retail members £35 a month. We have refocussed in the last 12 months and everything we do is to benefit retailers. If they are successful, so are our manufacturing Patron members. I would urge former members and prospective members to come and have a chat with us – that costs nothing! You may be surprised at what you hear!” T 01562 755568

Enviro advantage CRUK Visitors to CRUK’s stand at the Cranmore Park event can find out how clean installation waste take-back schemes and the growth in facilities processing carpet waste for new uses offer many business advantages for retailers, including potential savings on waste disposal costs. The industry-backed association for recycling and reusing waste carpet offers retailers opportunities to enhance their business and green credentials by diverting waste material from landfill, with both economic and environmental benefits. Neville Hinchliffe of CRUK member Arighi Bianchi can testify to CRUK’s help. The leading furniture store is recycling hundreds of tonnes of waste carpet each year and selling underlay from Anglo Recycling Technology; thereby completing the ‘circle of use’ and significantly reducing their waste management costs. He says: “We find our customers are happy to pay a premium to have their carpet and underlay waste recycled.” CRUK Director Laurance Bird adds: “Judging by the 96% growth in enquiries from the flooring sector last year, there’s clear proof that companies are keen to reduce their environmental impact and avoid landfilling waste carpet where possible.” Last year, 125,000 tonnes of carpet were reused, recycled or recovered for energy – a 31% landfill diversion rate. CRUK’s target is 60% diversion from landfill by 2020. Around 400,000 tonnes of carpet waste arises each year in the UK. T 0161 440 8325

Tablet tech MasterPiece The new MasterPiece for Ipad and Android tablets will be launched at BGNFS. Customers will be impressed in their home by the professional presentation. There is a clear attraction here for those who have already invested in an Ipad or Android tablet. However, the new version has a further benefit by saving to the cloud, so jobs are backed up and immediately available to colleagues back in the store. The new version has many of the usability benefits of a traditional PC based MasterPiece. For example, the drawing and measuring of rooms is done the same way as when using paper and pencil. In addition, the new stairway builder provides a significantly faster way of defining the components of a stairway. The main joy, however, will be not having to spend the evening wading through a backlog of plans. T 01737 35583

Rush to crush Kenburn Following their very successful debut at last year’s BGNFS, Kenburn will be exhibiting again at this year’s event promoting the financial and environmental benefits of recycling new and old carpet and underlay waste. Kenburn’s recycling initiatives have been welcomed by the flooring industry who in particular are extremely keen to divert their recyclable carpet and underlay waste from landfill as its more cost effective. In addition to supplying the carpet crusher and providing the logistical advice to recycle the waste Kenburn also visit retailers and contractors throughout the UK offering free of charge no obligation advice on the cost savings that can be made. AIS member Glasswells are the largest independent department and furniture store in East Anglia and as part of their ongoing commitment to the environment have recently purchased a Kenburn Carpet Crusher. Paul Glasswell comments: “Due to the large volumes of flooring we install its inevitable our fitters will uplift and remove hundreds of square metres of carpet and underlay waste every week. By installing a “carpet crusher” all our carpet and underlay waste is now recycled for “waste to energy” as a fuel to power concrete kilns rather than using coal and the recycling costs are significantly lower than landfill so its financially as well as environmentally beneficial.” T 01727 844988

Solid Wool Wools of New Zealand Innovation is at the heart of Wools of New Zealand activity and they are constantly ‘pushing the boundaries’. This year is no exception and at Solihull they will be showcasing their latest work with Solid Wool, an initiative where they are working to develop furniture from recycled carpet fibre. As provenance and traceability grows in importance, the world is looking more and more to have a direct connection with producers: in their case the farmers. NEWS Best of breed

Brockway Carpets has scooped a top award for the best British Wool carpet created with the planet in mind.

Brockway’s ‘Rare Breeds’ collection won the ‘British Wool Carpet Award’ in The Campaign for Wool’s first International Wool Carpet & Rug Awards 2016 presented at the new Wool Floor Show London event. It was described by an independent team of judges led by Tim Booth of the British Wool Marketing Board, as a ‘worthy winner.’ He said: "British Wool was looking for a carpet range that encompassed the values of 'planet-friendly’ whilst representing the ethos of British grown wool from British sheep breeds as a great choice to meet natural sustainability and environmental credibility in carpet. “ “Brockway’s ‘Rare Breeds’ Collection met those aspirations perfectly, using 100 per cent wool from British rare sheep breeds, using no dyes whatsoever and with an enviro-bac backing, it presented a perfect package. “ Rare Breeds is inspired by the exceptional qualities of Britain's oldest and rarest breeds of hill sheep from which each carpet is made – Kerry Hill, Cotswold, Norfolk Horn, Soay, Manx, Moorit, Balwen, Jacobs, Black Welsh and Ryeland. The range uses 2-ply yarn from these unusual breeds and is made in a 50oz weight. This makes the carpet both soft to the touch and very hard wearing for all areas of the home. The ‘mottled’ effect of each colour complements all types of home furnishings, creating a look to aspire to. And Rare Breeds features Brockway’s innovative, environmentally beneficial carpet-backing Envirobac. This lighter weight backing offers numerous advantages, being very flexible, super-strong and stable. It is energy-efficient, effluent and emission-free and can be recycled at the end of its useful life.

Chic Oblique

Oblique is the latest style to embrace the wondrous comfort of two-ply Eccelena yarn, bringing homes beautifully indulgent carpet that fends off stains and brings a lasting finish. “The launch of Oblique demonstrates our further investment in next generation polypropylene yarns within the Touch Down collection,” explains Birger Karlsson, UK and Ireland sales director. “Homeowners are quickly embracing these new super-soft yarns, appreciating the combination of stain-resistance, softness and added resilience.” Oblique is a dense saxony that delivers lavish comfort. The carpet’s two-ply Eccelena yarn not only helps to give better recovery and wear absorption, but also delivers a more precise and defined look, adding to the sense of luxury afforded by the style’s deep pile length. In Oblique Ultimate (16mm pile, 2,585g/m2 pile weight) and Oblique Superior (12.5mm pile, 1,920g/m2 pile weight) there is no doubting that this is a quality addition to the Touch Down collection and one that’s sure to win fans for its silk-like lustre: “Stylistically, we’ve seen a shift in the taste of UK consumers,” continues Birger. “While still popular, the wool-like look is certainly not as dominant as it once was. An increasing percentage of homeowners are looking for a heightened sense of contemporary luxury in their interior finishes and this is something they can find in the silk-like lustre of our Eccelena fibre.” T 00800 5266 5266

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

Associated Carpet Group www.smartercarpets.co.uk Contact: Richard Moore Tel: 01942 825520 rjmoore65@googlemail.com rmoore@smartercarpets.com

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 68 May 2016

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types Tip Sheared

Random Sheared

Level Loop

Multi-Level Loop

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles. from The Stocklists

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Velvet/Plush

Twist

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. May 2016 69

Flooring factsheet from Interfloor The resurgence of rubber underlay Research into consumer purchase behaviour commissioned by Interfloor in October 2015 shows more people than ever before are buying new underlay when they purchase new carpet.

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world.

The research suggests this is in part due to improved understanding of the various products and their benefits gained through Internet research and advice from retailers’ own sales consultants. The in-store consumer experience is key to the rising conversion rates, as it gives retailers an opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of the different products on offer. Consumers want hands-on experience of quality products which offer high levels of comfort and are fit for purpose. They are less concerned about price and more interested in long-term performance and this has led to the resurgence of traditional rubber underlays such as Tredaire Colours Red, Interfloor’s premium sponge rubber underlay. Sponge rubber underlays have been around since the 1950s for very good reasons. In fact, Tredaire launched Willow Green, the UK’s first sponge rubber underlay in 1956. Sponge rubber underlays are extremely comfortable; no other underlay product produces quite the same feel underfoot. They are also exceptionally good at minimising both impact sound and airborne sound between rooms. They are incredibly flexible and cover more applications than any other underlay type, including specialist low tog underlays for underfloor heating and thin and dense underlays for hard flooring. In a Stocklist readers’ survey published in November 2015, 30% said they were selling more underlay and although 60% find it easy to sell underlay, only 50% were using POS to demonstrate its benefits – one of the key reasons customers visit retailers is to feel samples (83%) or walk on the carpet to see how it feels (26%). Interfloor offers POS items including custom-made swatch books, presentation folders and hanging samples with instore foot testers coming soon. All are designed to help retailers sell exactly the right underlay to every customer that comes to their store.

Over 80% of those who didn’t buy new underlay at the time of their carpet purchase believe that they can use their existing underlay (57%), that underlay isn’t necessary (19%) or an expensive add-on (12%) and yet underlay is a great opportunity to improve the way the consumer feels about the total purchase – and hence the retailer.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

www.floorwise.co.uk

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

www.carpenter.limited.uk

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Combination

PU foam

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 74

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 81
