Look for the Buttery

You can trust new Invictus for unbeatable performance New Invictus from Associated Weavers heralds the arrival of the softest polypropylene carpet available anywhere today. Our unique new iVinci SDO StainAway yarn has been crafted into a range of four appealing styles in autumnal hues. The Invictus collection is named after constellations, reflecting the names of stars worshipped by our hero-image Maori. Heather shades 50oz Perseus and 70oz Pegasus in 16 colours, combine with subtle plains 50 oz Orion and 70oz Sirius in 14 colours, to produce alluring options for today’s home.

Invictus is a Multi-Width carpet in 2m, 2.5m, 3m, 4m and 5m variants to give it a distinct advantage over its competitors. Bleach-cleanable, with a 20-year stain and wear warranty, it has a lustrous, stain-resistant finish with high bulk. So with deep-down durability, yet super-soft to the touch, it is easy to picture its potential as a market-leading brand. It’ll do your store proud.

Display your Invictus with pride

A revolutionary product launch is worthy of some distinctive POS material, so we’re offering two unique display units. One is designed to show all four ranges whilst occupying a small footprint in your store. The other comprises two individual lecterns for showing off the heathers and plains to their full advantage. Feel and see the difference that Invictus offers to you and your customers by contacting your area manager today for samples, stand prices and availability.

Supreme Invictus confidence

We think Invictus is invincible. Register as a stand holder and book holder and you’ll receive a warranty pack giving you a FREE 20-year stain and wear warranty on all Invictus products. We are so confident that premature wear or food and drink stains will be avoided, that we’ll replace the carpet free of charge (if terms and conditions have been followed). The advantage over competitors on width availability means that Invictus should dramatically increase your sales. Most carpets are only available in 4m and 5m widths but Invictus is offered in 2m, 2.5m and 3m widths as well.

Carpet&FlooringReview Exploiting cork

Being rediscovered by designers as one of nature’s wonder materials, cork can now be found on footwear from the biggest sportswear brand in the world to wallpapers, fabrics and more. If nothing more than revealing the adaptability of this sustainable resource, these applications are hugely impressive, yet few can demonstrate cork’s practicality as its use as a flooring material.

Durable, soft underfoot, absorbing sound, transmitting heat and incredibly beautiful, Granorte’s huge range of cork and cork-ingredient flooring gives retailers a chance to exploit the current popularity of the material, while welcoming a completely different option to store. Collections such as Emotions, Tradition, Studio and Bloom make the most of the standout appearance of cork, while for the more traditional buyers; Vinylcork and Heritage provide wood-look floors that harness the performance properties of the material. In this diverse catalogue of flooring styles, cork’s natural properties are also used to full-effect beneath leather and linoleum, testament to the material’s ability to reinvent itself to suit the task at hand. Encapsulated in a new Wall and Flooring Collection in-store display that can hold 12 selected ranges, Granorte provides retailers with something completely different from the norm, something that is key to the recent rise of cork as a multi-application material: “Designers working in commercial and high-end residential interiors demand the very best but are always on the hunt for finishes that help to lift their projects from the ordinary into the extraordinary,” comments Paulo Rocha, Granorte. “Cork has proved itself a worthy material for designers and it’s adaptability means it can also mean something to homeowners from every walk of life. In short, it is a perfect aspirational flooring choice.” The Wall and Flooring Collection display is available to retailers across the UK. T 01785 711131

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

September marks the beginning of that fabric, flooring and furnishings time of year when people want to put their house in order as the colder months close in. We urge you to get out and about and see what the wool carpet business has to offer!

The Wool Season is Back!

September in the world of wool carpet - is about The Flooring Show! Its about other trade shows too and it marks the beginning of that fabric, flooring and furnishings time of year when people want to put their house in order as the colder months close in. We urge you to get out and about and see what the wool carpet business has to offer!

Your first stop should definitely be The Flooring Show in Harrogate where the wool carpet industry will be centralised for three days. There is a lot to be seen here - virtually every wool carpet manufacturer in the UK has returned to this event over the last two years and this year there is a genuine mood of excitement in the air.

Beautiful British Wool Carpet of the Month Pennine Heathers from Cavalier Carpets

Pennine Heathers from Cavalier Carpets is a 50oz range in British Wool. Inspired by the rugged Pennines in both names and shades, the range has fifteen up to date colours with the popular heather look adding visual texture. It is available in 4 metre and 5 metre widths and is moth resistant treated. Pennine Heathers is from Cavalier’s Homespun range and as that name clearly suggests - is made in Britain - providing additional value to a carpet that has ticked a lot of boxes for the everyday consumer, which is very much a Cavalier style.

The centrepiece in Hall C will be the Wool Trends centre which provides a really stunning showcase for wool carpets once again. Around this will be Adam Carpets, Axminster Carpets, Brintons, Brockway, Bronte, Cavalier and Westex and nearby there is Whitestone Weavers/Hugh Mackay, Kingsmead,Victoria and Manx. And this is before you head in to the other halls! There is a power packed programme on our side, as we launch our new Wool iBook and WoolRetailer.com. Both of which have much to offer the independent retailer. Our seminars will explain the way these two activities can help your business - and we have a prize draw running for those that come along and sign-up.

The new showcards from the Wool Carpet Focus Group will add a really ‘cool’ new story to the retail marketing of wool carpet who can resist a smiling sheep in sunglasses! We at the Campaign for Wool and British Wool are pleased to have facilitated and funded this material for them. As a new endeavour - with a group of well-known manufacturers steering it - we think it is perfectly placed to communicate the wool message at retail level and our contribution aims to give them a stylish sheep-style start!

Our number two choice is Decorex London, where wool is also high on the agenda. The organisers have requested a flock of sheep to greet their visitors at the entrance - as they promote the unique story of provenance that wool offers. Although very much a designer show, many retailers do benefit from the custom of local interior designers and smaller custom jobs - so its worth noting that wool is gaining profile in that world.

Last but not least, our third woolly activity is not strictly in September but one for your diary! We hope that our carpet retailers will pencil in October Wool Week. It will be held between 5th to 11th October and presents a really great platform upon which to celebrate all the wool products that you will see at The Flooring Show.

20 September 2015

and why we like it...

This is a carpet for every home - natural heathers just have an incredible knack of being totally acceptable anywhere! The names of the shades within their colour bank are Pennine perfect - White Coppice for the bedroom perhaps, Entwistle browns for the lounge, Pikestones in mossy green and Heapey with its warm rusty tones and then to Angelzarke what a catchy handle and of course the perfect name for a light beige carpet! Add to this the fact that this creatively named carpet colour-bank is all ‘Homespun’ - which is always a total winner with us here. British Wool - British made - a package made in heaven - or a little closer perhaps… the Pennines.

NEWS LinkedIn to luxury

A range of high performance products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used in the refurbishment of luxury office space at the LinkedIn Dutch headquarters in Amsterdam.

Flooring contractors, Vloerenbedrijf Hanic BV were contracted by Snelbouw Projecten BV to refurbish the 1800m2 floor, throughout the tower block of the business-oriented social networking service. Erwin van Hagen from Vlorenbedrifj BV said: “For such a prestigious and well known company, we knew that we needed to use flooring products that we could rely upon to deliver the best results. F. Ball had the solution for every different area.” After removing the existing floorcoverings, mechanically preparing the subfloor, contractors used Stopgap P131 general purpose primer to prepare areas of raised access flooring and Stopgap P121 acrylic primer to prepare the remaining anhydrite subfloor. Priming promotes the adhesion of smoothing underlayments when used to smooth non-absorbent surfaces and also prevents smoothing underlayments drying too quickly on absorbent surfaces. Stopgap 700 Superflex fibre reinforced smoothing underlayment was used by contractors over the areas of raised access panels to provide a smooth, sound surface, ready to receive a floorcovering. Fast drying and self-levelling, Stopgap 300 HD heavy-duty floor smoothing underlayment was applied to the remaining anhydrite subfloors. High performance adhesives from F. Ball were then used to secure a range of floorcoverings at the LinkedIn headquarters. Styccobond F3, which has high strength, good wet grab and is suitable for the installation of most carpets, was used to adhere custom printed carpet designed specially for LinkedIn. Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive, which gives a high bond strength, strong initial tack and a long open time, was used to adhere Bolon PVC sheet floorcoverings to kitchen and bathroom areas. Finally, Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier was used to install Interface carpet tiles to office areas. T 01538 361 633

Brockway brightness

There’s a colourful twist to Brockway’s stunning new portfolio, which debuts at The Flooring Show, Harrogate. Brockway is setting out its stall as ‘the home of wool carpets’ with five fabulous new ranges featuring its signature wool-rich carpet.

A new ‘hero’ carpet range Dimensions Plain (pictured right) is available in 32 vibrant colours in 40/50/60oz weights. Made from 80% pure New Zealand wool, 10% nylon and 10% polyester melt-bond, it looks great for longer. It’s a beautiful product, said Shaun Lewis, Brockway’s sales director. “The clear white yarn of the New Zealand wool gives outstanding brightness and clarity of colour. Combined with the nylon - which absorbs more colour and gives extra crispness - you can see the top of every tuft of carpet.” A new lighter weight version called Connections is available in 16 colours and is aimed at the starter homes market. Brockway’s distinctively natural new Beachcomber and Rare Breeds collections in 100% pure undyed new wool come in loop pile and velvet yarns. And the luxurious Minerals collection in soft natural shades offers an unusual combination of twist and velvet yarn creating a design in a plain carpet. NEWS Olympian LDP

Following the success of the Louis de Poortere stand at 100% Design 2014, the Belgian rug manufacturer makes its way to Kensington Olympia for this year’s edition of the popular London show.

Keen to greet familiar faces and new guests alike, the Louis de Poortere team are looking forward to spreading news of the company’s latest offerings. The vibrancy of striking rug collection BoBohemian and the double distressed vintage touch of Silver Lining have already made a considerable impact on the Louis de Poortere stable, but these are far from the only new players on show.

Expona sparkles

Louis de Poortere’s new Mad Men rug collection will be on display for the very first time at this year’s 100% Design, a truly innovative range comprising 60s-inspired looks for bold designers, those unafraid to take the gamble that could elevate their interiors to unscaled heights.

Polyflor’s new Expona Flow range of high performance commercial flooring was used to create a fun and functional flooring design at Quwwat Islam Education Centre in Preston recently.

Installed by Diamond Flooring of Bolton, seven designs from the Expona Flow range were selected to create the bespoke floor in the corridor of the centre’s Little Sparkles Nursery. The grey Luna and Storm colours were chosen for the base and border of the design floor, whilst the circular designs with striped, spotted and swirl patterns inside were created using the brighter Burnt Orange, Flaxen, Steel Blue, Meadow and Plum shades. The Expona Flow range features 50 heavy commercial sheet vinyl flooring designs in a 2 metre wide sheet format with a 2mm gauge and a 0.7mm wear layer. The designs used in this nursery corridor are from the Cosmos collection of solid colour, smooth floorcoverings within the Expona Flow range. Subtle highlights created by pearlescent fragments within these designs give the floor added depth and movement that changes with the light. Quwwat Education Centre worked with Polyflor’s in house Design Service to create this custom floor design. Polyflor’s experienced team works frequently with customers to create stunning bespoke design floors for interior projects in education environments. By using water jet cutting technology, the Design Service can create logos, motifs and intricate images. Polyflor’s Camaro luxury vinyl tiles in White Limed Oak were also installed inside the nursery playroom for two to five year olds. As well as offering years of durability and performance in the home, our hardwearing Camaro collection can also be used for light commercial applications such as this nursery, small offices and boutiques. 26 September 2015

“100% Design has become an important milestone in the Louis de Poortere calendar,” says Alan Russell, Sales Manager, UK. “The show provides us with a fantastic opportunity to show off what’s new at Louis de Poortere, from our stunning broadloom to our exciting new rugs and stair runners. Mad Men, BoBohemian and Silver Lining are just some of what will be on show, and we hope designers will have no trouble in finding the perfect product to suit their requirements.” Visit Olympia from 23-26 September for an array of hue and design combinations that will prove the perfect match for even the most daring interior settings. The discerning design palette is in for a treat, with Louis de Poortere reaffirming its position as one of the most style-led carpet and rug suppliers in Europe.

Headquartered in the famed city of Hamelin and a leading brand in continental Europe, Vorwerk flooring has opened its first UK showroom in a bid to boost its presence in a market that is seen as a beacon of growth. “We appreciated that if we wanted to be serious about the UK market, we needed a base here to look after our customers,” said Howard Lindsay, UK liaison for Vorwerk, who has a long track record in the trade.

The beautifully converted mill in Nelson, Lancashire, is a showcase for Vorwerk products – with minimalist interior design above floor level that focuses attention on some of the company’s most design-led flooring.

“But it’s not just a national base that we have built for the UK,” says Howard. “We have also built a product portfolio to appeal to the market here in a different way. We’re not interested in offering more ‘me-too’ products – we want retailers to make a better margin than that!”

That difference comes out across the range… Synthetic carpets that are more polyamide than polypropylene for better performance and well-defined colour, and with German engineering innovation for a distinctive finish. LVT that isn’t made from vinyl! Vorwerk RE/COVER green flooring looks like vinyl but is made from castor oil and rapeseed oil rather than petroleum-based products, which wear better than standard LVT and display more impeccable environmental credentials. Floor cleaners – The Vorwerk Kobold brand dominates the European market for vacuum cleaners and has now been rolled out in the UK (see last month’s The Stocklists, page 29). The carpet range has been remodelled with the new Fusion Collection being rolled out later this month with distinctive new POS displays to complement the well established Fascination Collection. Two-thirds of Vorwerk carpets are sold for residential use, and the company is keen to select a small number of smart retailers in exclusive territories across the country to reflect its unique style.

Howard Lindsay shows off the multi-level textures and geometric shapes that are a Vorwerk trademark.

Office Manager Nicola Caddis is pictured at the top of the dramatic entrance staircase that demonstrates the Vorwerk commitment to colour.

An issue for all of us in flooring is that we tend to prejudge what people are looking for and lead them to it,” says Howard. “We have designed our portfolio to cover a broad range of styles and offer stunning colour incorporating anti-allergenic qualities. Our products are German by design and offer superior performance.

NEWS Tattooist makes its mark

A bold and dramatic flooring design from Polyflor’s Expona Commercial range of luxury vinyl tiles was chosen for the refurbishment of Vida Loca Tattoo studio in Bolton, Greater Manchester recently. Vida Loca Tattoo in Bolton town centre includes a tattoo studio, hair salon, piercing studio and a coffee shop all under one roof. The owners chose the Dark Recycled Wood design from Expona Commercial PUR range to fit in with the studio’s contemporary style. To give the look of a random patchwork of upcycled timber, the design includes tiles in three different widths and in various complementary shades creating the effect of a reclaimed wood floor, a look that is becoming increasingly popular. Danny Watson, owner of Vida Loca Tattoo commented, “We loved this eye catching design so much that we used it all the way through the shop. It really makes our store interior stand out next to other shops on the high street and we’ve had many customers complement us on it. The fact that it is easy to clean and maintain is also a big bonus for us.” The Expona Commercial luxury vinyl tile collection features 55 eye catching wood, stone and effects design options for use in heavy commercial environments such as the retail sector. Its 2.5mm gauge and 0.55mm wear layer means this range is ideal for high traffic spaces such as cafés, bars and restaurants. Expona Commercial is further enhanced with PUR, Polyflor’s exclusive and robust polyurethane reinforcement which is cross linked and UV cured to provide superior cleaning benefits. T 0161 767 1111

Flooring in flight

Vinyl flooring from Polyflor’s new high design and high performance Expona Flow range was recently installed in the refurbished visitor centre at RSPB Bempton Cliffs nature reserve near Bridlington, East Yorkshire.

Designed by East Yorkshire based Salt Architects, the new RSPB Bempton Cliffs visitor centre opened in April 2015 and is expecting a busy summer of visitors coming to see the 200,000 seabirds who nest in the towering chalk cliffs every year. Around 240m² of Expona Flow heavy commercial sheet vinyl flooring in Honey Beige was installed throughout the visitor centre’s exhibition area and gift shop by Paul Hood & Son flooring contractors of Hull.

AW team grins and bears it!

The team at Associated Weavers Europe in Halifax this week presented a cheque for over £17,000 to Martin House Children’s Hospice after 12 months of fundraising, placing them firmly in the charity’s top 12 corporate donors.

The team, led by Steve Elliott and a charity committee of Simon Lewyckyj, David Funk and Sheree I’Anson, engaged in a variety of fundraising initiatives, including marathon and 10K runs, a charity night, 42 mile Lyke Wake Walk and a daring skydive. They also raised money through sales of Marty Bear teddies, car boot events, and donations from customers and suppliers.

The Expona Flow PUR collection of heavy commercial sheet vinyl floorcoverings includes 50 wood, stone and abstract designs in a 2 metre wide sheet format with a 2mm gauge and a 0.7mm wear layer. The Honey Beige design is from the Infinity collection in the Expona Flow range and was chosen to complement the surrounding coastal environment of Bempton Cliffs. This striking linear design features beige, gold and brown tones blended together to create the effect of endless wood. For superior cleaning benefits, Expona Flow flooring is cross linked and cured with Polyflor PUR polyurethane reinforcement for a simple polish-free maintenance regime. Polysafe Verona PUR decorative, carborundum-free safety flooring was also installed in stairwells, corridors and bathroom areas to provide sustainable wet slip resistance. The installed Cookie Cream shade features virtually invisible safety particles and tonal decorative chips to give the look of smooth vinyl with the performance of a safety floor. T 0161 767 1111

Sites for saving

Forbo’s Back to the Floor take back scheme continues to grow with new drop-off sites recently added in Wales and Ireland, enabling even more flooring contractors to save on disposal costs by recycling their Forbo flooring installation off-cuts. Although landfill tax increased again on April 1st 2015 from £80 to £82.60, prices for BTTF collections remain the same, so collecting off-cuts through the scheme is even more cost-effective. Back to the Floor Scheme Co-ordinator, Michelle Brewer said: “Collectors report that they are making genuine savings through taking part in the scheme and the welcome addition of new drop-off sites means we can extend this valuable service to even more flooring professionals.”

The two new Welsh drop-off sites are MCD Wales, Bridgend and 3D Flooring Supplies, Swansea. Both accept cushion vinyl off-cuts from any manufacturer, but not felt/polyester-backed flooring. In Ireland, customers can drop off Marmoleum off-cuts free of charge at Contract Flooring Supplies in Dublin. Forbo off-cuts, as well as cushioned vinyl flooring off-cuts from most manufacturers, are collected across the UK and recycled back into new flooring products across the company’s portfolio. Flooring contractors can benefit from savings on disposal costs versus sending their waste flooring material to landfill as Allan Kiely, Director of Kiely Carpets Ltd discovered. “Back to the Floor is very helpful for us; it cuts down on a lot of flooring waste to landfill while generating savings. Sending a tonne of off-cuts to landfill costs us £160, but recycling them is a third of this cost,” he explains. All Back to the Floor scheme members are provided with colour-coded polythene bags and bulk bags, which are collected directly from site or a contractor’s premises. Forbo has invested significantly in the recycling processes at three of its five UK sites. Tessera off-cuts are processed at the Bamber Bridge plant near Preston, while the Flotex and vinyl flooring goes back into flooring at the Ripley site. At Forbo’s plant in Kirkcaldy, Marmoleum off-cuts are shredded into very fine pieces that are used in new Marmoleum production. T 0161 925 8760

NEWS Internet inspiration

With homeowners turning to the internet for inspiration and to discover the latest in interior style, Avenue has included a brand new inspiration gallery on its website, showcasing its collections of stylish cushion flooring by room.

Steel appeal

CAT has specialised in the production of stainless steel sections for many years forming flooring profiles from sheet material.

In recognition of the appeal of stainless steel a new brushed stainless finish has been added to their popular range of Aluminium Feline and Naplock trims. Suitable for residential and light commercial installations the finish involves the aluminium first being brushed then brightened with a hint of bronze electrolytic tin process introduced to create the stainless effect. Available in 2.715m and 0.900m lengths. A new sample card and product data sheet is available by contacting the sales office.

Alongside being active on leading interior style sourcing websites such as sales@cat-accs.com pinterest, Avenue is seeing increasing visitor numbers on its website, www.avenuefloors.co.uk, as homeowners look to discover more about the brand and its collections of cushion flooring. The new inspiration gallery helps homeowners to visualise just what impact a floor from Avenue can have on their home, before finding their nearest retailer through the stockist search facility. “Online presence is now crucial for any flooring brand as homeowners are using the Internet as their primary research method in finding the latest products for their home,” comments Victoria Hemelaer, product manager, Avenue. “Even before making the trip to stores, many have spent hours looking at the options available to them, particularly when it comes to the look they are trying to achieve. Our new gallery features all the latest Avenue flooring designs captured in beautiful and inspirational rooms that show just how our cushion flooring can inject a sense of style to the floor, making it a key part of any interior.” The Avenue website also features full details on all the ranges, as well as a completely free sample service for homeowners. HarrogatePreview Sell-out show is full of promise Packed programme for biggest Flooring Show for years

With all the stands now sold and more than 165 exhibitors, this year’s Flooring Show will be the biggest for many years, and the industry is starting to gear up for an exciting and vibrant event. The show will be held at its habitual home in Harrogate from 20-22 September 2015. Event Director Wendy Adams comments: “We are very pleased to see a packed floorplan. We’ve worked very hard over the past few years to bring back some big names to Harrogate, and it’s fantastic we now have a great mix of familiar faces and exciting new brands – I’m sure 2015 will be a great year for the show.” In addition to favourites including Cormar Carpets, Abingdon Flooring, Furlong, F Ball & Co, Lano, Lifestyle Floors and many others, the 2015 show welcomes a host of new and returning names including IVC Group, Asiatic Carpets & Rugs, Uzin, Whitestone Weavers, Hugh Mackay, Windmoeller, Parquex, Jaymart and Ultimate Rugs.

“It’s fantastic, we now have a great mix of familiar faces and exciting new brands – I’m sure 2015 will be a great year for the show.” As well as being a platform for top-rated exhibitors, the show will continue to develop feature areas to enhance the visitor experience: The 2014 show introduced ‘The Wool Trends Centre in conjunction with the British Wool Marketing Board and the Campaign for Wool; this popular area will return in 2015 in expanded format. Styled in association with Homes & Gardens magazine and Sanderson and Zoffany fabrics, visitors will see: Adam Carpets – Axminster Carpets – Brintons – Brockway Carpets – Bronte Carpets – Cavalier Carpets – Ulster Carpets – and Westex, as well as nearby exhibitors Kingsmead, Hugh Mackay, Victoria Carpets and Whitestone Weavers. The ever popular Demo Areas run by NICF, FITA and CFA will return – the programme runs over all three days of the show and can be seen here. This year the Trends Hub team will create a ‘flooring retail shop of the future’, and there will also be a seminar explaining the key points about the shop concept on the Sunday morning. The idea is to provide some ideas for independent flooring retailers to take home and make some positive changes to their business. In an environment where major national chains have been introducing marketing and investment plans to target a wider range of consumers, the Hub will provide features, ideas and examples to help independent retailers continue to develop their own offerings. The seminar programmes in the Business Enrichment Theatre will provide a great opportunity for retailers and other show attendees to take away some business improvement actions that can be implemented without cost, the very next day. HOUZZ – the fastest growing website in this category in the world – will be leading design seminars; Vanessa Brady, newly appointed OBE for her outstanding services to the design industry, will be talking about how to sell to interior design companies; and ever popular David Abbott will be talking about best pricing. The programme runs throughout the show – full schedule on page 64. The newly formed Wool Carpet Focus Group (WCFG) will be present with a special feature area in Hall C. Visitors will see evidence of how well wool carpets perform under extreme conditions, with a live video feed and a demonstration of the unique ‘Bouncebackability’ effect – the natural ability of wool carpets to return to their original appearance after they have been trodden on all day. Also on display will be a volcanic eruption of a Wool Mountain, supplied by the WCFG; with vibrant dyed silver lava flows and wool rocks cascading and erupting from the crater into the atmosphere, it should be something no one has seen before! The show organisers are hosting a key networking opportunity at the close of the first day – the Party in the Park reception will start at 5.30 pm in the café area at the end of Hall C and a comedy night will again be held in the stunning Royal Hall at the HIC on Sunday 20th September. www.theflooringshow.com

Karndean Designflooring Da Vinci masterpieces

Karndean Designflooring, is launching new wood designs as part of its long standing Da Vinci range. The Da Vinci collection, popular in commercial environments for its narrow wood effect planks, deep bevel and smooth finish will be further enhanced with twelve trendy, new ‘modern rustic’ designs. Heavily influenced by the trend towards reclaimed and repurposed materials in commercial spaces, the 36” x 3” distressed planks replicate the unique look that comes from the transformation of wood over time. The twelve new planks are split into two groups – the first group is made up of seven designs, including four modern limed planks and three classic oak looks, whilst the second group features three burnt and smoked designs alongside two worn, aged driftwood looks. The 0.7mm wear layer ensures the floor is able to cope with the intense demands of commercial projects and is easy to maintain, whilst offering the appearance of vintage products and a slip resistance rating of R10. Available with a commercial guarantee of 20 years, the complete Karndean Da Vinci collection will now feature 20 wood and seven stone designs. Hall C Stand 13/29 • 01386 820185 www.karndean.com

Visit the volcano the pressure’s on to promote wool carpets and it’s about to erupt!

The challenges faced by the carpet industry in communicating benefits of wool carpets has led to the creation of the new body, the Wool Carpet Focus Group (WCFG), which has the single aim of increasing the sale of wool carpets and rugs. It will be seizing the opportunity of the Flooring Show to spread the message. Martin Curtis, the chairman of WCFG, said: “The carpet industry has found it difficult to coordinate the efforts of manufacturers, distributors and retailers in order to send a clear unambiguous message to the public the wool carpets and rugs are best #naturally” The WCFG came about after an impromptu meeting between Steve Byrne of Thomas Witter Carpets, David Lees of the Headlam Group and Martin Curtis of Curtis Wool Direct. These three founder members knew that because wool is such a multi-talented fibre and that it is used in many difference products – from high fashion, hand and machine knitting, to beds and bedding and household textiles like curtains and cushions – that the wool marketing bodies around the world could not give wool carpets their exclusive attention. So, the WCFG was formed and its bold approach has captured the imagination of the whole sector. The WCFG will feature strongly at the Flooring Show in Harrogate. Special point-of-sale materials and leaflets explain the science of wool will be on hand. However, the main feature will be live video feeds from the show itself which will film visitors walking over wool carpets in the entrance ways. “These fabulous carpets will feature the WCFG logo and tag line ‘It’s cool to buy wool #naturally’ explained Martin Curtis. “In addition, a demonstration of wool’s superior bouncebackability appearance retention and cleanability will show how brilliantly wool performs. Wool carpets #naturally repel dirt and stains and if they don’t look dirty enough after about 6,000+ feet have trodden all over them, we will deliberately spill something on them so we can demonstrate how easily they clean and how good they look afterwards!” A special effects volcano will aslo be featured in the main entrance to The Flooring Show. Martin Curtis said: “ As everyone knows, because wool is #naturally fire retardant. It shouldn’t burst into flames but will probably erupt, leaving a molten lava sliver flow and rocks and boulders of woolly yarn will be shot into the atmosphere! It should be worth seeing if it comes off!”. Martin Curtis also pointed out that the WCFG is all-inclusive. That means that as long as the carpets and rugs are made with wool it is no concern where they originate from. Similarly, manufacturers around the world can get involved and become members of the WCFG. A new website is being developed and very shortly www.woolcarpetsnaturally.org will be available, which Martin Curtis said will be “for anyone to get information about one of the best investments a person, family or corporation can make – the purchase of a wool carpet or rug.” T 07788 916606 martin@curtiswool.co.uk

F&X Carpets bright new brand

One of the brightest and newest brands in residential carpet, F&X Carpets, has unveiled an energetic identity reflective of its ability to be all things to all men, demonstrating its willingness and ability to provide a hugely diverse range of carpet. Already impressing retailers with its Himalaya brand of wool and wool-rich carpets, including blends with speciality animal hairs such as yak as well as synthetic fibres in 100% recycled Aevita and virgin polyamide, the manufacturer is also driving forward with innovative manmade collections. A range of great value polypropylene carpets are to be joined by Aevita recycled PET collections and carpets with bio-derived ingredients to provide one of the UK’s most impressive portfolios. These environment aware alternatives are finding widening ground among a new generation of style-conscious carpet purchasers, looking for luxurious aesthetics in carpets that offer easier maintenance and comparable longevity to wool. Supplied by F&X Carpets’ well-established cut-length service operating from Belgium, these new collections will be revealed at The Flooring Show, Harrogate in late September, ensuring that UK retailers have fast and easy access to these innovative solutions. “There are many well-established brands that claim heritage and tradition as philosophy, but here at F&X Carpets we take a very different approach, instead looking towards how we can ensure diverse appeal, not only in terms of our brand but also in the carpets we produce,” explains Gordon Hugo, F&X Carpets. “At Harrogate this year we look forward to introducing some exciting new developments within our Himalaya wool stable, as well as brand new collections using our Aevita fibre and carpets with bio-derived content.” T 07976 607657 www.fuxingcn.com • Hall M Stand 14/28

Interfloor flamecheck underfoot

Interfloor have launched Tredaire Flamecheck, the brand’s first IMO certified flame retardant PU underlay. The 6.5mm thick, 145kg/m3, underlay passes the stringent standards of the International Maritime Organisation and is recommended for maritime vessels and offshore installations. It is ideal for double stick installations and offers a high level of comfort and durability. Steve Woodhead, Interfloor marketing director, says, “We’re delighted to announce the launch of Tredaire Flamecheck. We have a growing UK and international business in the maritime market and this will give our customers a choice of IMO certified underlays in both PU and latex foam, the latter through the highly successful Duralay Counterflame. Our resellers will also be supported with high quality sampling and fitting guides. We look forward to presenting Flamecheck at the Harrogate Flooring Show in September along with some other exciting new products.” T +44 (0)1706 238 810

Woolsafe the natural choice

The WoolSafe Organisation returns to Harrogate this September for the most anticipated edition of The Flooring Show in years. Featuring at stands C1a and C52 in Hall C of the exhibition centre, WoolSafe is playing a large part in proceedings including demonstrations that are set to remind guests of the amazing performance properties of wool carpet. After a successful year especially for the organisation’s newly-introduced CleanSeal and EnviroSeal accreditation programmes, The WoolSafe Organisation is hoping to further the message that wool is the best choice of floor covering for the majority of interior applications. One of the key ways this will be achieved is through cleanability demonstrations running in both entrance foyers and on the WoolSafe stand across the three day period. Here, the Wool Carpet Focus Group (WCFG) will lay wool carpet for each and every guest to walk over upon entry and exit. Experiencing a year’s wear in an average home across the three days, this demonstration shows wool’s natural resistance to soiling and the fibre’s inherent bouncebackability. Once maximum soiling is reached at the end of the show, the carpet will be cleaned using WoolSafe approved methods and products, bringing the carpet back to ‘looking like new’. The three-day carpet demo will be streamed live and not only show the easy to clean nature of wool, an often overlooked credential when considering carpets of this type, but also its ‘bouncebackability’ under heavy footfall. WoolSafe will also be demonstrating how easy it is to remove common household spills from wool carpet using just the WoolSafe Approved WOW spotter and tissue paper. WoolSafe will play an integral part in this year’s show, providing technical support in the demo areas and assisting with the provision of wool-based goody bags. This will further promote the message that wool is not purely an option that is easy on the eye and to the touch. With the correct information and subsequent action, wool carpet can maintain its sumptuous look and feel for longer making it the most cost effective of all carpet fibre types. Visit Woolsafe at Harrogate for spot removal demonstrations or for information on the organisation’s services in general, such as its training, accreditation programmes and professional services. Carpet&FlooringReview

This is for your own protection! Own label is essential to survive and thrive When you’re celebrating your 30th birthday, it’s natural to look at what’s changed over the decades. But ACG is marking this milestone with a lot less nostalgia and a lot more pragmatism about what’s changing right now and how they can help retailers to cope.

The trade has changed and the pace of change is accelerating. In a very few years, the protection of trading on own label brands will be absolutely essential.

“We have gained a lot of experience over our 30 years but it’s how we can use that knowledge to help retailers with what’s been happening in the last five years or so that’s more relevant to our members,” says ACG’s Richard Moore. “Everyone is complaining about the over-accessibility to manufacturers’ branded flooring products in the market – not just through the internet but across a range of outlets who don’t have the High Street costs of our members,’ he says. In a sector that had a bad recession, manufacturers have been competing between themselves for share of a market that has seen little real growth. New low-cost competitors online and out of vans and lock-ups are an increasing challenge. “The trade has changed and the pace of change is accelerating,” says Richard. “In a very few years, the protection of trading on own label brands will be absolutely essential.” The answer, he says, is own label promotion – the de-branding of manufacturers ranges so that products can be presented in store under different identities that protect them from price comparison by consumers. ACG identified this issue early and created the ‘Smart Choice’ brand for their members backed up by sophisticated point-of-sale and wider marketing support. Premium carpet products are also marketed under their ‘Finesse’ brand. Crisp, creative design and highly professional marketing standards have already given these brands a distinctive position in the trade. “For retailers who have embraced the changes and gone down the own label route, the feedback has been astonishing in terms of improving markups and the level of confidence in getting a better sale,” says Richard.

NEWS FEATURE

30 Years of 1985-2015

You owe it to your business to really see what’s out there and make a proactive choice about whether a buying group will help you. Richard Moore, ACG

Follow the money ACG is unique in that its model is based on an annual subscription (currently £825) with 100% of the discount rebates ACG has negotiated with suppliers being passed on to retailers A programme of additional promotions on key flooring products add to the value during the year. ACG is keen to help prospective members calculate their financial performance to see what the tangible benefit is likely to be achieved before they commit to joining up. Typically a business with a £500k turnover might expect at least £12,000 extra margin from its business plus an extra £3,000 from various promotions – not a bad return on a £825 subscription. Even a smaller business with £150k turnover could expect to gain by about £5,000 on its bottom line. “I am still surprised how relatively few retailers explore the opportunities that buying groups have to offer. You owe it to your business to really see what’s out there and make a proactive choice about whether a buying group will help you,” says Richard. “Retailers have their own deals and we don’t discourage that but in the group you can get discounts on a much wider range of products meaning you don’t have to focus on a few mainstream ranges to make your money, you can offer the customer more choice,” he added.

A history of independence The Associated Carpet Group set itself up in 1985 as a low cost buying group for independently minded retailers with an emphasis on less structure, less rules and less regulations. Richard Moore joined ACG 10 years ago to add a new level of professionalism which has seen the membership double in that time. With Richard and just two admin employees and a small office that’s owned outright by ACG, this is a lean organisation. ‘No interference. Guaranteed!’ is their pitch and it’s popular. ACG claims to be the UK’s fastest growing buying group and it’s already large with 217 members with 277 stores. The ACG Board consists of seven directors – all retailers – and they keep this line-up fresh with a 3-year rotation of board members – constantly adding new talent to the overall wealth of experience. ACG is keen on meetings to cement their relationships and promote information sharing. At least 10 meetings take place for members each year including a weekend AGM and ‘mini-meetings’ between smaller groups of retailers are added in where possible. Richard commented: “One strength is that we all talk to each other. We know what the benchmarks are in different areas for what we should be paying for our ranges and for services, and what we can see it for.” Also on the agenda at these sessions are sales trends, consumer behaviour, competitor information and store design. Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

Feel-good factor for man-made fibres Price-conscious consumers have long been attracted to man-made carpet, but the advances made in recent years have seen even more interest due to increased comfort and improved appearance. Resistance to stains is another aspect finding favour with homeowners, many of whom would have been unlikely to consider carpet, especially those with young children and pets, and manufacturers have been quick to adapt to this trend. Crown Floors’ James Caldwell, reports a shift in buying habits which has seen Easy Care, Satin Soft Easy Care and Extra Strong Easy Care polypropylene become the mainstay for his company. “Homeowners want to know that the carpet they choose is easy to live with and protection from stains resulting from spills are conceived as a big part of this. Our Easy Care ranges deliver on this with stain warranties from 10 to 20 years, along with the promise of the toughest stains removed with a diluted bleach solution.” It is important to keep moving forward, he continues, and success for Satin Soft and Extra Strong variants has resulted from overcoming concerns over both feel and appearance retention. “Our website features details on our Easy Care carpets, including methods of cleaning, and Crown Floors retailers are provided with a handy leaflet that explains all about the benefits and practicalities of these fibres,” Mr Caldwell added.

“Homeowners are considering synthetic fibres a comparable alternative - rather than a lesser, practical and cost-based decision.”

Victoria’s First Impressions uses a Soft Touch 2-ply fibre twist

Crown Kent House is one of Crown’s Easy Care ranges

Victoria Carpets has extended its Easicare carpet portfolio, but emphasises that great design is not just about colour or pattern, it is as much about the integrity of the yarn, the manufacturing process and the finished product. Further developing the Aura, First Impressions and Shimmer collections within Soft Touch, the company states that these meet the market for exceptional quality and value carpets. “The opulent alternative fibre two ply twists capture the luxurious look and feel of wool,” the company reports. “Available in an array of inspired cool, contemporary shades and tones, Victoria have complimented the inherent technical attributes with some fun colour names. But don’t be fooled, retailers and customers can be confident in these ranges of high performance carpets." The company says its sophisticated man-made fibre ensures improved appearance retention throughout the carpet's life, while being highly resilient, bleach cleanable, stain and fade resistant. This, along with its exclusive LOC-weave backing, is designed to provide additional reassurance with superior handling and feel softer underfoot. continued on page 68... .

Abingdon’s Aqua Pro-Tec yarns help stop stains soaking in Lano‘s Eccelena yarn combines a soft silk-like with resilience

...continued from page 66 Lano Carpets UK and Ireland sales director Birger Karlsson describes its Eccelena yarn as a synthetic fibre of the moment, bringing plush softness to stainresistant carpets: “One of the biggest criticisms stain-resistant fibres have faced has come in the feel, meaning they are often a practical choice. Our Eccelena yarn addresses this, turning stain-resistant carpets into a luxury lifestyle choice. Using super fine polypropylene filaments spun into a resilient two-ply yarn, Eccelena is wonderfully soft to the touch while still being bleach cleanable. “Eccelena carpets, such as the 1/10th gauge Fascination and Imagination, also capture one of the biggest trends in carpet, a silk-like look,” he says. This not only demonstrates that homeowners are looking for luxurious finishes, but that the dominating ‘natural’ look may be abating somewhat. It may also point towards changing attitudes to wool carpets, with homeowners considering synthetic fibres “a comparable alternative rather than a lesser, practical and costbased decision.”

Abingdon’s perspective is that the beauty of making its own two-ply yarn at its extrusion plant South Wales which gives it the guaranteed consistency of quality and service. This confidence about the performance of Abingdon yarns means they give these products the ultimate Stainfree For Life! warranty. “What more could a consumer wish for?” says Martin Peace at Abingdon. “In addition, diversity in colour and design are also paramount to our success. Extruding and processing your own yarns just gives you that slight edge in being able to be pro-active, seeking out that ‘something a little different’ to offer our customers.” He added: “Having said that, we all know that all things bright and beautiful are represented by grey and beige only at the moment - but who knows though, when the fashion changes we will be ready and waiting!” Abingdon’s latest Aqua Pro-Tec technology means stains don’t soak in and can be blotted off the surface of the carpet. “I would just like to say a big thank you to our technical team in South Wales for the introduction of the revolutionary Aqua ProTec treatment of yarns,”says Martin. “Again this has given us a ‘Unique Selling Point’ and is proving to be a major benefit when demonstrated to consumers. Watch this space for our latest development at the Harrogate Show.” Mercado's Troublefree brand incorporates a collection of ranges made possible by advancement in polypropylene yarn quality, resulting in these including a lifetime stain warranty. “Likewise on the heavier qualities we also offer a 25 year wear warranty. Today’s consumers are very demanding on colour selection, durability, and a comfortable feel, all of which can be said of the Troublefree Polypropylene ranges,” says buying director Adrian Laffey. “It is clearly noticeable that the younger shoppers do not have an affinity with wool products and we have seen sales increase year on year for polypropylene products. Quite understandable when the same spend can get you a product that feels deeper and offers the security of a lifetime stain warranty.” Mr Laffey further states that with younger generations more interested in fashionable design, the desire for carpet to last 25 to 30 years is declining.

Take the tube Retailers power new Pentwist

British manufacturer Penthouse Carpets has introduced new contemporary colours to two of its most popular premium carpet ranges - with a little help from its customers.

Extensive market research was carried out in consultation with a cross section of retailers, resulting in eight new stunning contemporary shades for its long established 40oz and 50oz, 2-ply “Pentwist” collection. The ever popular 36oz and 42oz “Carlton” range was also given a revamp with four new on-trend heather shades. “This should broaden the appeal of these tried and trusted traditional carpets, to the more fashion conscious consumer”, says Jonathan Gamble sales & marketing director.

F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has launched an updated range of 'tube products' which benefit from updated formulations, based on advancements in flooring technology, as well as distinctive new appearances

Fast curing Stycco Flex has an open time of up to 10 minutes and is suitable for bonding stair nosings, without the need for mechanical fixing. It has excellent gap filling properties and is waterproof, making it suitable for use in both internal and external environments. Stycco Grip is a gap filling mastic adhesive with improved formulation and early, high adhesive strength that is ideal for vertical and overhead applications. The single component adhesive can be used both internally and externally.

Penthouse managing director, Alex Dyson, said the move is part of the company’s continuing programme of product development: “Pentwist has been a flagship Penthouse range since the 1970s; though it has been refined over the years, through improved manufacturing techniques.

Stycco Seal is a silicone sealant commonly used to seal floorcoverings to sanitary ware, matwells, pipes, gutters and gulleys. The sealant is moisture curing, resistant to fungus and forms a tough, rubbery, waterproof bead that is suitable for interior or exterior use.

“Naturally, as well as enhancing production methods, we constantly monitor trends in interiors and anticipate market demands. And we talk to our retailers about what they want; who better to know the customer than the people dealing with end users, day in and day out?

Styccobond PU is a rapid setting, high strength polyurethane adhesive that can be used for securing wood blocks, carpet grippers, aluminium and PVC-U nosings, dado rails and wooden skirting.

“We are confident that these new “Pentwist” and “Carlton” shades will be well received by the market; particularly as both ranges are of superior quality, yet have mid-range price points, and of course are backed by the traditional Penthouse support and service.”

Richard Harris, Marketing Manager at F. Ball and Co. Ltd., said: “Our latest range of reformulated and improved tube products are ideal for flooring contractors to keep close at hand in their toolbox or van, always ready to use."

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 77

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

www.flooringone.co.uk Contact: Glenn Harding Tel: 0121 683 1426 glenn.harding@flooringone.co.uk

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 80

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.interfloor.com

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. www.interfloor.com

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter

• shedding • pulled loops

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 82

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
