Multi-Level Loop

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

THE STOCKLISTS April 2015

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 5

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

www.greendalecarpets.co.uk Contact: Rob Harding Tel: 01432 852000 Fax: 01432 852005 rharding@greendalecarpets.co.uk

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 10

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS April 2015

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 17

Carpet&FlooringReview Make your mark

Already featuring the super hot herringbone of Toulouse, Leoline’s Woodmark collection has been updated for 2015 with two brand new styles in the bleached look of Azur and the stripped pine of Cardassian, bringing a cushion floor collection packed full of on-trend looks. The two brand new decors join a strong collection of oak looks, from the pale hue of Aspin through to the deep almost-burnt look of Calais, to make Woodmark one of the standout collections in cushion flooring. Part of Leoline’s Privilege family, the range enjoys the all-round benefits of the brand’s Compactback backing and is available in two, three and four-metre widths. In 19 decors and with a 10-year warranty, Woodmark is a great choice right throughout the home. “Woodmark exhibits all the practical benefits of cushion flooring in a range full of stylish wood options,” explains Victoria Hemelaer, product manager, Leoline. “With huge choice encompassing contemporary and traditional looks this range is a great choice for retailers looking for an all-round collection of woods that will suit a broad spectrum of homeowners.” Featuring Superguard for a floor that resists scuff and marks and that is easy to keep clean, all Woodmark styles benefit from Natural Look & Feel technology that gives a more realistic look to the floor. Wool earns its stripes

Lothian Wool Berber & Stripes is the latest collection from Balta Broadloom, bringing the popularity of coordinated styles in the appeal, luxury and resilience of 100% British wool. “Capturing the trend for coordinated looks and in the allure of 100% British wool, Lothian Wool Berber & Stripes is set for big things,” reveals Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Broadloom. “We are really excited about the potential of this range, bringing a sophisticated and less gregarious look to stripes, coordinated with the natural look of Berber carpets.” The carpet is available in eight natural Berber colourways and four coordinating stripes that have a 2.5cm repeat ideal for use on stairs and in hallways and landings. In four and five-metre widths, the Berber styles also help to minimise seams and waste in a variety of room sizes. In a 2,070g/m2 weight and with a 7.5mm total height, Lothian Wool Berber & Stripes remains excellent value for a 100% wool carpet, helping to ensure that the range reinforces its appeal across its expected wide audience. Carpet&FlooringReview

The Stocklists has re-branded its news service as Carpet & Flooring Review, a title that has an illustrious history in the industry.

CFR was founded in 1948 and was the flagship flooring trade magazine for many years - but independent research showed it slipping down the readership ratings and the magazine carried on in an online format only in recent years. It finally closed in 2014. “We value our traditions in this trade so we welcomed the opportunity to acquire the CFR title and restore it to its former glory,” said David Spragg of The Stocklists. “Now, once again, the name is part of the UK’s best read title for flooring retailers and contract specialists and we’ll use it to showcase our popular editorial section in this magazine.” T 01482 659396

Divine intervention

With the launch of Divine Twist, a 75oz deep pile Saxony, Lano Carpets is driving interest in its Premium Easy Care Collection, a range of carpets designed to deliver worry-free stain resistance in a more resilient and durable Lanoset two-ply yarn.

The 100% polypropylene Lanoset fibre is heat-set to offer better durability, but also to give a beautiful wool-like appearance, helping to give justice to its premium moniker while providing homeowners with the reassurance of a bleach cleanable low-maintenance carpet. Backed by 10year stain and wear guarantees and with a Extra Heavy Domestic rating, there is no doubt the new Divine Twist is a carpet suitable for use in the busiest of family homes. Available in both four and five-metre widths, Divine Twist comes in an exceptional weight of 2,370g/m2 again underlining its premium tag and providing high levels of underfoot comfort. “The Premium Easy Care Collection offers our very finest stain-resistant qualities so that retailers can offer their customers luxurious carpet that is also worry-free,” explains Birger Karlsson, Sales Director UK. “Providing an alternative to the worry of wool and wool-rich blends, Divine Twist is also excellent value, a carpet that is typically Lano.” Divine Twist is available in 10 shades, with a grey theme running throughout, giving a thoroughly modern and intune collection that is well placed to meet the need for a wider assortment of grey hues as this palette begins to enjoy growing popularity.

Fading glory

The stunning new Bo Bohemian collection from Louis de Poortere features two designs in Flowers and Tribal that capture the ‘Boho’ spirit.

The worn vintage feel of Flowers comes in four neutral shades with Bourges Brown, Glastonbury Grey, Paleo Persian and Woodstock White, as well as the impactful Roskil Red. The patchwork nomadic rework of Tribal comes in seven bold hues including Blue Lagoon, Caipirinha, Grenada Cocktail and Velvet Eddie. Woven on jacquard Wilton looms in a combination of wool and cotton chenille for comfort and a sense of true luxury, Bo Bohemian possesses a subtle sheen to add a touch of glamour and giving a modern edge to the traditional design influences, a perfect take on the eclecticism of the bohemian personality.

“As we once saw with beige, the demand for grey is meaning that ranges need to be more sophisticated in their approach to the colour, offering homeowners more choice. Divine Twist explores the potential of the palette beautifully and this makes it an excellent choice for retailers wanting to offer their customers carpets that are very ‘now’,” concludes Birger.

“Brand new for 2015, Bo Bohemian is in-touch with the retro rhetoric that runs through many current fashions of interior style,” comments Alan Russell, sales manager, Louis de Poortere. “Updating traditional designs with more accepted contemporary colour influences and with worn effects that subdue intensity and complexity of both Flowers and Tribal, this is a collection that is very now, the perfect blend of modern living, the Bohemian spirit and classic style.”

Careful choices

Polyflor safety flooring was used to help create beautiful, homely interiors for the award-winning Winchcombe Place care home in Newbury, Berkshire.

Offering residential, dementia and nursing care, this state of the art 80 bedroom care home was designed by The Drawing Room Interiors of Solihull. Polysafe Wood fx PUR decorative safety vinyl flooring was installed in the reception area, dining room and hair salon of Winchcombe Place care home. The European Oak 3347 shade was chosen to create a welcoming, inspirational and comfortable atmosphere. The flooring’s replication of natural materials and homely appearance helped to create a stylish environment that complements the use of historical artefacts on display. These vintage items are designed to reflect the local history of the site and community as well as offering visual cues to aid reminiscence for dementia residents. The project was awarded with a prestigious SBID International Design Award for New Build and Development. The project team chose Polysafe Wood fx as a safe but attractive flooring option that would cater for residents with a wide range of needs such as dementia and mobility issues. Polysafe Wood fx is a hard wearing sheet vinyl flooring which combines the authentic reproduction of wood with sustainable wet slip resistance to reduce the risk of slips and trips in residential or commercial areas. The vinyl includes virtually invisible aggregates which provide traction for underfoot safety without compromising the high clarity look of the floor. The floor’s cross-linked and UV cured PUR polyurethane reinforcement means that it can be easily maintained with a simple cleaning regime. T 0161 767 1111

Genesis Patterns is one of the UK’s largest sampling product producers and due to the nature of their business generate huge volumes of waste carpet off cuts every week.

As part of their existing environmental policy all their waste off cuts are sent to Anglo Recycling. Genesis Patterns director John Foster comments “we recycle not only our carpet off cuts but also our plastic film and cardboard waste as well using the Kenburn “ carpet crusher “.

Crumb of comfort

The made in the UK Optima underlay from floorwise, delivers commercial environments ultra durable underfoot comfort and carpet protection, helping to extend the life of carpets in busy areas such as hotel receptions, corridors and bar areas.

We first saw this machine at the Flooring Show last year and saw how effective it was at compacting a variety of waste streams.”

In a new composition that gives even more performance per pound, Optima has additional acoustic absorption and thermal insulation too. Thanks to its dense rubber crumb construction, Optima is the benchmark in high performance underlay for the most demanding of environments.

He adds “Before installing the “carpet crusher” we were putting all our off cuts into bulk bags and sending a curtain side vehicle from Genesis in Shipley to Anglo Recycling in Rochdale once a fortnight. Now we’re using the “carpet crusher” we only need to make a delivery to Anglo Recycling once every couple of months so we’ve reduced our transport costs by 75% and at the same time also reduced our carbon footprint as well. We’ve been delighted with the performance of the “carpet crusher” and also the excellent service we’ve received from Kenburn.”

Using floorwise’s proprietary UHD+ construction, Optima is rated for Heavy Contract Use and is suitable for wheeled traffic, making it the natural choice in the hustle and bustle of hotel receptions and corridors. Just as suitable for corporate areas in sports stadiums, meeting rooms and anywhere that demands impeccable performance, optimum acoustics and longer life; Optima is the default choice for many contractors and specifiers: “Our Optima underlay delivers exceptional performance from its recycled construction,” explains Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise. “With performance enough for really demanding locations Optima also reduces sound by up to 31dB, quite a significant reduction and certainly helping to reduce noise in busy hospitality. Optima can be specified for stretch fit or double stick installations and has the potential to extend the life of the carpet under normal maintenance conditions, helping to absorb the signs of wear from footfall and wheeled traffic. By using post-consumer carpet mixed with underlay as a fuel for waste to energy plants the costs of disposal are reduced by 30% compared to landfill so it not only makes financial sense to install a “carpet crusher” it also at the same time prevents recyclable waste streams from ending up in landfill. Environmental Bloc

Kährs has introduced its new, creative Bloc Collection. Bloc is an on-trend patterned wood floor created using individual oak staves, in three different sizes and shades. Sections are easily joined using an oak tongue to create unlimited geometric designs – from traditional herringbone to modern brick - in single or multi-colours. Staves can also be used to create eye-catching borders around patterned or traditional plank floors.

All Kährs Bloc staves have an even timber grain, a lightly brushed surface and a beveled edge along all four sides. Natural Bloc has a clear, satin lacquer prefinish, whilst White and Grey Bloc each have a stained lacquer finish, which creates an elegant washed hue. All Kährs finishes are solvent-free, exceptionally durable and promote easy care. Individual staves are 18mm thick and measure 300x300mm, 300x600mm or 300x 900mm; the engineered construction comprises a sustainable oak surface layer and back, and a plywood core. This method provides a surface that is climatically stable, making Kährs Bloc Collection ideal for installation over underfloor heating systems. T 023 9245 3045

Voice of the trade Paul Phillips – Bond Retail Marketing What’s the biggest single advantage of being in a buying group? There is not only one advantage rather a multitude.

How different are the various buying groups from one another? Very, BRM is run by people with retail experience and being smaller (geographical exclusive areas) allows us to focus on individuals. Are retailers right to worry about losing their independence? No, they are together with retailers with like minded goals.

Are you surprised how many retailers are not members of groups? Not surprised, often mixed messages can confuse. Every retailer should investigate the opportunities, they might surprise themselves. Is there a lack of understanding of how buying groups work generally in the flooring industry? Not really, our suppliers are wise to the help that BRM can bring in communication and marketing opportunities, and not the least, product development.

Apart from the price discounts/margin advantages, what do you think retailers value most about buying groups. Having all the up to date facts 24/7 that assists in making the right decisions.

Can groups get in the way of long-established supplier relationships? No far from it, BRM helps to build stronger links between the two.

How important are own-label branding and exclusive ranges to retailers these days? Yes, fundamental, exclusive products bring confidence and profit opportunities. Why is it worth a day away from the business to visit the Buying Group National Flooring Show? All the right products from all the right places under one roof, economically done.

Flooring is the ‘hot interiors product for 2015’

Flooring is at the top of consumers’ purchase priority list for 2015 according to new research from May Design Series, the London showcase interiors event.

Flooring topped the league table at 21%, ahead of curtains & blinds and sofas. The research, presented in the Interiors Buying Census by May Design Series director Kali Nicholson, described floors as a ‘hot product for 2015. “With nearly seven in 10 consumers planning to make an interiors purchase in the coming year, there is every reason for positivity amongst manufacturers and retailers alike,” she said.

“Our findings demonstrate that the High Street is not necessarily doomed to decline. In addition to the valuable grey pound, those earning upwards of £50,000 a year prefer to visit shops than purchase online. Those earning the highest annual salaries of over £200,000 prefer to touch and feel a product prior to purchasing - demonstrating the value of placing mid-tohigh value items in showrooms,” she added. The High Street still ranks above retail parks in the survey of where most home interiors products are bought. When purchasing items for their home almost nine in 10 Britons say that in theory, price should be their main consideration. Getting the right price becomes more important with age: 77% of those aged 16-24 say that it’s a factor compared to 88% of those aged 55+, the price tag matters least to those living in London, but is more likely to be a sticking point for those from Northern Ireland and Wales. Asked what are the thing people dislike about buying home interiors, respondents ranked their pet hates as: 1. Queues; 2. Crowded stores and aisles; 3. Long delivery times; 4. Merchandise out of stock; and 5. Having to ask for prices. When it comes to making decisions for the home, women call the shots. Although over half of men take their partner’s opinion into account when making purchases, only a third of women do the same. A third of women say that they shop more carefully for interiors than they do for clothes. The May Design Series takes place at London’s ExCel cente, May 17-19. www.maydesignseries.com

Positive POS for smart business Effective POS is essential in a crowded, competitive market but your floor and wall space is a precious commodity that all your suppliers want a piece of. So we’ve selected some of the best displays for retailers to help drive your business in 2015. See pages 53-59. .

ON DISPLAY 2015

Ten tips for top-selling stores 1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Ensure a large mix of standard and niche products to reassure consumers they have plenty to choose from – even if they ultimately go for something safe.

Mix more expensive items with cheaper products so that the opportunity to trade up is always there – don’t place the high end products on their own or in an increasing price layout where they can be disregarded by customers.

Use your window – too often this is a neglected area but a good display reassures consumers that you’re a smart retailer.

Use your floor! Have the most popular of your higher margin products laid in sections of your floor. Consumers like to buy what they can see in a larger sample.

Keep literature racks full – empty displays look tired and complacent and consumers like to have material to take away – and you can clip your business card to it.

from The Stocklists

6.

7.

8. 9.

Create different areas for different product types so that consumers are not confused by too much on offer in the same place.

Avoid an ‘industrial’ environment – too many stores are sheds with industrial roofs, lighting and ventilation on show. Use suspended ceilings, black paint and screens to hide the worst parts – the buying environment should be as domestic as possible.

Use soft furnishing, furniture items and flowers around the flooring displays to create a homely environment. Avoid empty racks, dead bulbs and dark video screens.

10. Be careful about locating roll stock – very often it has a prominent position and lures consumers past the higher margin material. Consumers not only know it’s cheaper but the large area helps them visualise it in their own home which is more challenging with small samples. April 2015 53

Crown Floors With a great presence and huge capacity despite its small footprint, the new mobile tombola from Crown Floors will really help your store to turn up style. Breaking with the convention that tombolas all have to look the same, this new tubular construction with swappable full height graphics is created to maximise the strong appeal of Crown Floors within stores. Capable of holding 74 Crown Floors carpet samples (14” x 18”), the tombola is completely mobile thanks to being on wheels, meaning it can adapt to the changing face of retail stores. “We appreciate that not everyone needs or wants a wall display, but find that standard tombolas seem to blend into one, so we’ve created this stunning new display to really turn up the style in store while still remaining incredibly flexible,” comments James Caldwell, sales coordinator, Crown Floors.

Cavalier Carpets It’s all about catching the eye, and few manufacturers point of sale range does it better than the stunning Cavalier display system. Choose from ‘Slim-line’ wall units, 500mm wide modules with up to twelve different carpet cassettes and stylish low voltage lighting. Also in the range are contemporary lecterns and now a matching single ‘design a drum’ tombola where you can choose any combination of 100 samples from over 300 product options.

The tombola’s full-height graphic panels give plenty of room to communicate the key sales messages of Crown Floors and help to reinforce its identity in-store, setting itself apart from the monotony of wood-coloured displays from other brands. The tombola is ideal for retailers looking to introduce Crown Floors or for existing retailers wanting to expand the presence of the brand. The new style tombola holds six new for 2015 ranges and has limited availability. It can be ordered now for delivery from June onwards, in time for key selling periods.

Marketing insights The POS challenge in your store Point of sale is at the heart of every retail environment be it a small, independent high street shop or a department store. It allows consumers to view your products before purchase - indeed encourages that purchase. Ensuring that your POS is effective and is maximising your returns is the key challenge for every retailer. There have been some significant developments in recent years, but perhaps the biggest has been the introduction of digital technology. For instance it is now possible to view clothing in virtual changing room mirrors in Burberry and shop for groceries using our smart phones with ‘pop-up’ digital stores. That’s fantastic for garments and foodstuffs but what about flooring? Ours is a tactile industry and our products are high ticket items. Consumers want to see and touch

samples and there is a process involved in accurately measuring, designing and pricing up a project. How then are these new developments in POS being absorbed within our sector? For some flooring manufacturers, digital technology is having an impact. Karndean Designflooring for instance, is at the forefront of these developments with their apps for iPads and iPhones. The augmented reality (AR) app enables consumers to view their products more effectively at home. Scott Cochrane, Retail Sales Director explains the idea behind it.

Karndean Designflooring – Augmented Reality (AR) app

“We know a product sample isn't always enough to help decide which of our floors will look best in a space. Although samples allow consumers to feel the surface texture of the flooring, people also want to know what the floor will look like with their cabinets, wallpaper, furniture, bathroom suite - the list goes on”.

“With Adam Carpets – new mood board displays

access to Karndean's full catalogue via the app's Touch Selector, consumers can view any Karndean floor. They can also take snapshots as they go along, edit out walls and furniture and then save to compare. In order to help consumers decide the app is also integrated with Facebook and Twitter, so they can easily post favourites to their profile for friends and followers to comment”. For other manufacturers however, the challenge of maximising POS effectiveness is being tackled differently. Adam Carpets have looked at the best way to display their diverse portfolio in store and have developed their mood board concept. “We are using the latest lifestyle imagery to inspire consumers” explains Eamonn Prescott, Sales & Marketing Director. “Samples from all of the current ranges are on display, including

the latest Fine Worcester colours and they include removable ‘post cards’ featuring images of the mood boards. Consumers can take these away to match to paints, fabrics and their own furnishings at home.” The display contains four mood boards, each created by the Adam Carpets inhouse design team. The themes of the boards are Nordic, Modern Classic, Understated Elegance and Rich & Sumptuous and cover a kaleidoscope of colour. They are a very neat and economical way to cover the entire Adam carpets collection. The POS will be available to order at the National Buying Group Show in May. Brockway Carpets too have been looking at how best to tell the story of wool and their manufacturing processes, whilst influencing shoppers. The result is their new consumer friendly store-within-a-store modular system. Featuring a number of fabulous new Wool Rich ranges, the eye catching black and white style includes new roomset photography and ‘reasons to buy wool’ display boards. The modular system is fully flexible and can be tailored to meet retailer’s display and spacing requirements. Installed by the company’s own merchandisers, all retailers need to do is choose the look they want and leave the rest to Brockway.

Victoria Carpets – newly re-launched units offering Share Scheme membership

Victoria Carpets also realise the importance of effective POS and its need to appeal to their target consumer. They have conducted a thorough review of their tried and tested format and given it a softer, more feminine contemporary twist. Using their house grey colour for styling, the units feature flashes of accent colours to draw consumers in, whilst ensuring that the samples themselves are displayed at a height and in a way that is easy to access and view. However Victoria Carpets also understand the key role of the retailer. They believe it is crucial to gain support to create the best opportunity for their brand. The introduction

of the innovative share scheme for retailers demonstrates this. Robert Byrne, Marketing Manager explains - “We want to create true partnerships with our retailers and to recognise that, each retailer that installs any one of our three main unitary studios, namely; The Ultimate, Classic and Primary, qualify for shares in Victoria PLC (T&C’s apply, UK only). Several retailers have already benefitted from this exciting proposition”. The challenge of marrying eye popping POS with the best instore footprint continues and we look forward to seeing how our industry adapts as yet more new innovations are introduced.

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

“Having fun and experimenting with colour has a transformative power to influence our mood, behaviour and general wellbeing.”

Are we really so self Beautiful British Wool conscious and colour bland? Carpet of the Month Colour is literally draining out of our lives and this is not just an observation of a carpet industry that has largely sold its soul to thousands of understated shades of beige and greige. It is also the view of Dulux - a leading paint company that arguably needs colour more than floors do. So concerned were they about the neutral life we lead - Dulux performed a bizarre stunt to encourage Londoners to be more colourful. A group of mummified commuters turned heads in the streets of the capital and left passers-by bewildered, as men and women dressed head-to-toe in white with their faces concealed to hide any hint of expression or personality boarded the tube, waited for a bus and walked around the city. The intention was to show a typical commuter scene, only stripped of all colour.

Hugh Mackay has a stunning selection of plaids within their best selling Tartan Collection, in total there are thirty designs both traditional and contemporary. Six designs are in 100% British Wool - full marks there - others are in an 80/20 wool/nylon blend and all are available in 4 metres width. Wikipedia, the modern fountain of all knowledge - describes tartan as a pattern consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours. Tartans, for the record, originated in woven wool and as we know, the design is particularly associated with Scotland and the infamous kilt. At some point Wikipedia may also add that this historic design has become a carpet industry classic and one Hugh Mackay can certainly be proud about.

Interestingly this was to warn people they were sleepwalking into a future that would be emotionless, expressionless and colourless. But mostly to spread the message that life needs colour…and Dulux paint. It was the findings of a study, dubbed the ‘Colourless Future Census’ commissioned by Dulux, which showed colour is draining out of all parts of life from fashion and beauty to technology, architecture and our homes. No surprise to the carpet world there but should we be worried? Findings revealed Brits were at their most vibrant in 1970, the year Jimi Hendrix played at the Isle of Wight festival, and more interestingly they associated the 1960s with sunshine yellow, the 1970s with purple and the 1980s with electric blue - all bright colours. However, since the 1990s, the most popular colours have been sand, grey and black and Brits think the most popular tones in the future will be silver, white and grey. This is slightly alarming - are we really so monotone? It seems 21% of the nation are not confident wearing colours, but maybe not all hope is lost as 56% of people said they would like to brighten up their lives with more colour but are worried about what friends and family might think. Slightly reminiscent of the school yard culture - are we behaving too much like sheep? Self conscious behaviour across a nation does tend to limit opportunity. Perhaps we should note the origin of colour in wool carpets, which are known for their ability to dye well - those Thomas Witty axminster looms perfected rich colour and weaving in wool and notably this enabled the wealthy - including the Royals of the day - to have something unique, beautiful and bold. Colour was akin to affluence and good taste. Colour liberation for all soon followed. A century or so later and we are back to dull sack cloth shades that don’t offend. Interestingly, the survey also revealed people think brighter colours coincided with happier times - applied colour psychologist, Karen Haller, concluded: "Having fun and experimenting with colour has a transformative power to influence our mood, behaviour and general wellbeing.” It has to be said that Dulux are drumming up business… a refreshing new shade on the wall translates to sales of tins of paint. Those acceptable, unselfconscious dreary shades in the home don’t offend and don't need changing. Paint and carpet needs colour.

60 April 2015

and why we like it... Tartan is obtrusive design successfully redefined as high style and we think that Hugh Mackay have captured this perfectly. Plaid carpets are the indisputable bow-tie of flooring designs; a fitting flourish on special occasions that may look a tad bold, even over the top in daylight hours but works brilliantly regardless. We applaud their bold shades! While scrolls and geometrics languish, tartan charms reign supreme. Hugh Mackay offers outstanding choice in both shade and design but the mellow, heathery colour way shown here provides a perfectly beautiful backdrop - not for the self-conscious but for the ‘happy to be an individual’ consumer! We think tartan was made for carpet!

Feature: Anglo Recycling

The Evolution revolution Underlay’s ultimate environmental credentials They call it ‘Evolution’ but the launch of a whole new class of underlay is much more of a revolution - and Anglo Recycling is leading a charge that will challenge the established market. Anglo is best known in the flooring sector for its pioneering innovation in transforming carpet waste into the raw material for conventional felt underlay – a traditional niche product that’s returning to the mainstream and enjoying substantial growth.

Anglo Recycling

300,000 tonnes of waste are still going into landfill and every ton is costing around £160 to bury. Anglo has refined the art of recovering that carpet waste and using advanced shredding and fibre blending techniques to turn an increasingly expensive disposal headache into a valuable, virtuous product.

Their revolution is in the technology turns the acknowledged but rather oldfashioned virtues of felt underlay into a modern, more effective product that’s easy to fit and will attract mass demand. A process called fibre rebonding creates a sandwich of RCF (Recycled Carpet Fibres) using a ‘smart’ layering technique. This structure not only gives fibre rebond underlay excellent structural stability for cutting and fitting, but also enhances the established benefits of felt by optimizing the load spreading characteristics of the material, delivering classy levels of comfort and the optimum response for better appearance retention. This creates a “mattress” effect under the carpet which out-performs other underlays but is ‘right on the money’ when it comes to price. “Our Fibre Rebond is something fresh and different,” says MD Andy Hall. “There is a massive opportunity out there and we intend to take it by solving the huge problem of carpet waste. It’s made right here in the UK and it will be a winner for everyone.”

Based in an old Lancashire cotton mill, Anglo are working with several carpet manufacturers to recycle their production waste but it’s the growing network of retail waste recovery that has increasing potential. This ‘closedloop’ network is developing to allow fitters to have their waste picked up by Anglo, recycled into fibre rebond underlay to be sold back to the trade for the next installation. And ultimately that underlay can be recycled again – and again.

Working closely with the team at industry body Carpet Recycling UK – of which Andy is also chairman – the idea for Evolution was hatched only back in September following work Anglo had done in acoustic matting. The first product emerged in January this year with the launch of the commercial range in March. Anglo has launched three products under ‘The Evolution Underlay Company’ brand with ‘good, better, best’ options at different thicknesses called Delta, Ultra and MegaCushion. Those special outer layers even allow Evolution to be super colourful at point of sales as is the vogue in today’s underlay world - each is brightly coloured in blue, green and an eye-catching purple for the poshest one. But of course, they are all very green!

And if you are wondering about Anglo’s ultimate ambition, they reckon that their process could deal in the future with a significant amount of the UK carpet waste issue with technology developments beyond clean fitters waste to include uplift material as the business grows. April 2015 63

Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

Sticking to the schedule We all recognise that 'time is money', but in today's fastpaced world the ability to complete flooring installations quickly and efficiently will keep customers satisfied and play a major role in winning more work in the future.

A key component within this is ensuring that the correct materials are used for each particular installation, with suggestions below from industry suppliers.

F. Ball reports it has developed the Fast-Track Solutions range, including fast-track adhesive and smoothing underlayment.

Stopgap Fast-Track 30 is the company's rapid set, rapid dry smoothing underlayment. "It has excellent self-levelling properties, a working time of 10-15 minutes and a walk on hardness time of 30 minutes. In total, Stopgap Fast-Track 30 is ready to receive new floorcoverings from just 45 minutes," said a company spokesperson.

Styccobond F5 is F. Ball's new fast-track vinyl sheet and tile floorcovering adhesive, designed for excellent initial grab and fast drying properties that allow vinyl tiles to be placed and receive foot traffic immediately on completion, minimising the downtime of the area.

These products, when combined with the company's rapid drying Stopgap F78 waterproof surface membrane, allow flooring contractors to complete a vinyl floorcovering installation in as little as three hours, the company states.

“The floorwise name is synonymous with value and quality and this is no different than with our range of screeds and adhesives,” explains floorwise managing director Richard Bailey. “From handy spray can adhesives such as F592 and F599 for fast fixes to Pro Screed smoothing compounds, all our adhesives and screeds are formulated to provide reliability and compatibility above all else, so that installers can turn to them with complete confidence, whatever the situation. F. Ball - Stopgap Fast Track 30 application

Floorwise focuses on value

“As retailers and installers come under price pressure for fitting work, this better value can make a real difference.” “Unlike big brands with huge marketing budgets to pay for, floorwise can deliver the same level of reliability and performance but with better value. As retailers and installers come under price pressure for fitting work, this better value can make a real difference. With excellent coverage rates too, switching to floorwise can make a real difference and with distributors across the country, it’s easy to find a wiser way to reliable installations," Mr Bailey concludes.

Packexe advises that installations can be messy and surrounding surfaces need to be protected from foot or equipment traffic and dust and debris. Spending a little time protecting floors and interior surfaces can mean minutes or even hours saved after an installation, reducing clean up times and helping to prevent damage from dropped equipment or spillages.

"We have recently introduced Packexe Fleece to our protection film range, which is our first padded and reusable film, recommended for delicate surfaces," says a spokesperson. "The Edge is another new addition to the range; designed for reaching the very edge of installation areas, or covering small or awkward areas.

"With both products only taking minutes to dispense and clean up, it gives that little extra confidence in protecting surfaces, ensuring a quality and professional job, with peace of mind for you and the customer."

Interiors sales strong

Driving off for £1m charity

One of the industry's longest running Charity events is set to enter its 59th year in May.

The Kidderminster Carpet Manufacturers National Charity Golf Tournament takes place at Kidderminster Golf Club on the 19th and 20th May sponsored by Mr Tomkinson. This year’s beneficiaries are Macmillan Cancer Support and four local charities in Kidderminster itself. The event, which has raised over £1,000,000 since it started is the largest manufacturer/retailer golf tournament in the UK. Day one is a four ball team event while Day two is a two ball team event. There are a whole host of prizes to be won and also a tombola. Closing date for entries is May 2nd 2015. Chairman Shaun Lewis commented: “It is an honour to be at the helm of this prestigious event. Whatever the economic conditions and state of trade, the industry has always rallied round to support this event and raise a significant sum of money for charity. “We are delighted to have the kind support of Mr Tomkinson who have brought fresh impetus to the event. I would urge players, past and present, to support us and these good causes again this year.” For info and entry forms: T 01562 824 737 t.jones@brockway.co.uk

Sales of interiors products boosted lack-lustre retail sales figures in the opening months of this year according to the latest statistics from the British Retail Consortium. UK retail sales increased by 0.2% on a like-for-like basis from February 2014, when they had decreased 1.0% on the preceding year. On a total basis, sales were up 1.7%, against a 0.7% rise in February 2014. Adjusted for the BRC-Nielsen Shop Price Index deflation, total growth was 3.4%, above the 12-month average of 3.2%. “Sales are up while prices fall which means that retailers are continuing to work hard to provide original products that excite customers at the right price. So far, 2015 has been positive for both retailers and consumers and it shows no signs yet of changing course,” says Helen Dickinson, director general of the British Retail Consortium. Furnishing was the second largest contributor to growth in February and remained the fastest growing category on a 12-month basis. Home Accessories had another strong month, ranking fourth in growth. But the GfK’s “Climate for Major Purchase Index” edged down to 4 in February from its January record high of 5 showing a softening of consumer confidence in buying bigticket items.
