WOOL FLOOR SHOW LONDON Edel Telenzo introduce new colours Barbican, London Bridge and King’s Cross to their high quality wool carpet collection. All will be available during the Wool Floor Show London. The popular Barbican collection has been extended, adding four new stripes. The collection now consists of six two-tone loops and six matching stripes. The new stripes bear more colour, taking in the latest fashionable colours such as blue. Those looking to add colour can make a statement on the floor with 335 Candy Cane. For a stunning combination, combine one of the two-tones with a stripe on e.g. the stairs or as a runner. Edel Telenzo proudly produce high quality multi-ply wool loop carpets. The carpet collection features distinctive designs and constructions and all carpets are Scotchgarded™ for extra stain protection and guaranteed against moths, pilling and shading. Edel Telenzo carpets are suitable for both domestic and commercial use. The Ceneva® backing is environmentally friendly and results in odourless carpets.

A PERSONAL NOTE “As you are likely aware, I leave Edel Telenzo Carpets Ltd at the end of April to take a new role as Managing Director of Victoria Carpets Ltd. Whilst excited at the prospect of the new role, I am equally saddened at leaving the Edel Group and all of my friends and colleagues there. Over the past 3 years, we have between us, invigorated the UK business and have succeeded in doing so through hard work, focus and team play. I would therefore like to thank all of my colleagues for their support and energy, characteristics that will ensure that the business remains strong, experiencing continued success in the years ahead. Last but not least, a huge thanks to our customers. None of the above would count for anything if we did not have the unstinting, and thankfully increasing support of the UK Independent Retailers. I remain a firm supporter of the Independent sector and intend to continue to demonstrate this in the future.” Best regards, Phil Hartley, Managing Director, Edel Telenzo Carpets Ltd 16

Carpet&FlooringReview Fashion infusion Celebrating nine years as a Cormar Carpets classic, The Oaklands Collection has had a fashion infusion with nine new colours - offering a choice of 20 home furnishing shades. The New Zealand wool branded range is manufactured using fine tenth gauge machinery to give it a fine dense pile surface. It comes in three pile weights – 32oz, 42oz and 50oz in 4 and 5 metre wide – giving a comprehensive choice of options for house builders and consumer buyers alike. With a palette of heather and plain shades including new neutrals such as Limestone, Fondant and White Pepper as well as soft blues and greens like Nordic Sky Hyssop and Pampas, the Oaklands Collection is made from 80% New Zealand wool, 10% polypropylene and 10% tuftbond and is available in both 4m and 5m widths. It will retail from approximately £26 per sq m. “The Oaklands Collection has been a staple range in our portfolio, enjoying huge success over the years,” said David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets. “It remains a firm favourite with retailers as it offers such a wide choice of contemporary colours, different weight option and three price points - 120 opportunities to make a sale from one range.” All Cormar’s wool twist, wool loop and easy clean polypropylene ranges are produced on site at its Lancashire mills and distributed in the UK and Eire via its own delivery fleet. Bold boost for Van Gogh Karndean Designflooring is adding 12 new wood hues to its popular Van Gogh Wood collection. The four striking groups, French Oaks, American Redwood, Scottish Beech and Mexican Cypress ensure a grain and colour palette to suit any space. Inspired by reclaimed natural wood, the large (48” x 7”) plank designs replicate the unique look that comes from the transformation of wood over time, in addition to processes such as scorching, liming and smoking. “Our new Van Gogh designs are our boldest to date,” commented Scott Cochrane, sales director at Karndean Designflooring. “They are a welcome addition and reflect the trends, such as rough luxe, that we’re forecasting within home interior design. The collection is not only design-led, but also retains all the durability and ease of maintenance our customers have come to expect, making them ideal for any residential or commercial space.” The four, lightly lime-washed French Oak of Tawny Oak, Burgundy Oak, Hessian Oak and Honey Oak are reminiscent of salvaged antique flooring. The rich grain details and large scaled planks complement both traditional and contemporary homes. The collection also includes three Rough-Luxe designs inspired by American Redwood railway sleepers – Reclaimed Redwood, Aged Redwood and Salvaged Redwood. Running with the theme of reclaimed woods, Karndean’s product designers were drawn to the unique detail and texture of the Redwood ties, which over the years had aged beautifully. Introducing new texturising techniques, they have taken the natural aging process one step further with these three designs, giving the American Redwood designs the look of repurposed timber without the practical drawbacks of real wood such as splintering, cracking and warping. With a recently introduced lifetime residential guarantee, the complete Karndean Van Gogh collection will feature a total of 32 wood designs. T 01386 820200 www.karndean.com from The Stocklists

Stopgap’s surface success Stopgap F77, the high performance waterproof surface membrane from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. was used in the recent refurbishment of the company’s own Engineering Workshop, situated at F. Ball’s main manufacturing facility in Cheddleton, Staffordshire. The specialist, accelerated waterproof system was used to prevent the passage of subfloor moisture from compromising the finish of the workshop’s new epoxy floor coating.

NEWS

The workshop’s previous floor had become heavily contaminated, and constant foot traffic along with the use of machinery over many years had also adversely affected the floor. Contractors from The Preparation Group in Lincoln therefore had to mechanically prepare the subfloor before the installation could begin. The subfloor was first shot-blasted to break down the surface contamination, before a grinding machine was used to remove any remaining contaminants, and create a smooth surface for the installation of a damp proof membrane. Due to the age of the building, the contractors knew that it was extremely unlikely that a structural DPM was in place, so they immediately applied one coat of Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane onto the 100m2 workshop subfloor. Stopgap F77 is an accelerated waterproof surface membrane system that can impede the passage of construction moisture and rising damp up to 98% relative humidity levels in a one coat application. The two-part epoxy resin is colour pigmented to aid coverage uniformity. The product’s accelerated formulation means that it cures in just 3 hours. Contractors then applied two coats of Don Construction Products Strongcoat HB PE; a premium quality epoxy-based coating, designed to provide floors with a seamless, hygienic and highly durable finish. As the floor coating was installed within 24 hours following the application of the DPM, there was no need to prime the damp proofed subfloor. T 01538 361633

Just the ticket for funfair A range of high performance floor preparation products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used in refurbishment work at Dreamland; Britain’s oldest amusement park, situated in Margate. Contractors from Hi-Spec Flooring used Stopgap Green Bag smoothing underlayment and Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane to create a high quality floor finish in the retail area of the amusement park, ready for the installation of new Forbo linoleum floorcoverings. Commenting on the use of F. Ball products at Dreamland, Dean Finch of Hi-Spec Flooring said: “The products performed excellently as usual. We use F. Ball products a lot, and we always have done. We have a great relationship with their sales rep; he is always available to help us find the products we need for a particular job. Having that kind of support makes us more than happy to use their products regularly.” Hi-Spec Flooring were contracted to refurbish the main retail area at Dreamland. To be ready for the park’s launch, contractors were asked to complete the job as quickly as possible so that the retail area could open in time. Stopgap F77 is a two part, accelerated epoxy resin system that cures in as little as three hours to provide an effective barrier to rising damp and residual construction moisture. It can be used where relative humidity levels are as high as 98%. Stopgap Green Bag is a general purpose, low-odour, smoothing underlayment, suitable for use in light to heavy-duty applications and over a wide range of subfloor types. It has excellent self-smoothing properties, meaning that minimal work with a trowel is required, and it can be walk on hard in just 90 minutes. T 01538 361633

NEWS Academy acoustic excellence 2500m² of acoustic flooring from UK-based commercial flooring manufacturer Polyflor was chosen to help improve the acoustic performance of Northampton Academy as part of the secondary school’s refurbishment project. The classic, wood effect American Oak design from the Acoustix Forest fx PUR range was installed along corridors and staircases on multiple levels at Northampton Academy by local flooring contractor Absolute Coverings Ltd who are based in Silverstone, Northamptonshire. Suitable for demanding, high traffic commercial environments like large schools, this acoustic floorcovering produces an impact sound reduction level of 19dB, reducing the transfer of noise throughout this modern school building that accommodates approximately 1400 pupils. Available in 8 sophisticated and highly realistic wood effect designs, the hard wearing Acoustix Forest fx range features a closed-cell foam backing to provide its 19dB reduction in impact sound within interiors, that exceeds UK Building Regulation requirements of 17dB. This heterogeneous sheet vinyl floorcovering also importantly features a polyurethane reinforcement (PUR) which provides enhanced protection and an easier life-long, polishfree maintenance regime, leading to overall maintenance cost savings. Polyflor’s Acoustix Forest fx flooring contains recycled material and is 100% recyclable via the Recofloor vinyl take back scheme. The collection has also achieved an individually certificated BRE Global A+ rating for education environments. T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com

Soft touch Providing the stain-resistance desired by homeowners, Lano’s new luxurious polypropylene collection Touch Down also welcomes a softer and more resilient carpet thanks to a finer filament and two-ply Eccelena yarn. “Eccelena has been developed to answer the criticisms faced by regular polypropylene carpets and the results really do make carpets more appealing to homeowners wanting the reassurance of stain resistance, but with a more luxurious feel and better long-term appearance,” comments Birger Karlsson, sales director UK and Ireland, Lano Carpet Solutions. “With such great all-round performance it’s only natural that we bring added presence to carpets featuring the fibre and so the Touch Down collection was born.” Touch Down makes its presence felt by taking a step back from the usual formula used for carpet displays. Introducing a more abstract lifestyle-focused approach to deliver a look that stands out from the competition, Touch Down is sure to attract interest from homeowners, making it a great addition to any store. Featuring Fascination, Imagination, Genius, Oblique Ultimate and Oblique Superior; the Touch Down collection provides a range of styles sure to find favour among a broad spectrum of customers. Whether homeowners are wanting a dense and plush velvet or a more natural looking classic twist, Touch Down delivers with each style available in a range of sophisticated and modern colours. NEWS Putting charity back on the map One of the furnishing industry's favourite charity days is being relaunched at an exciting new venue for 2016. The National Golf Charity Day, first held more than 60 years ago, will be held on Wednesday September 28 at Oxfordshire Golf Club. There will be up to 100 places available to men and women golfers of all abilities from across the industry. Said Jonny Westbrooke, CEO of The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers: "The national golf day has traditionally been among the highlights of our calendar of fundraising events and we're delighted to be taking it to Oxfordshire Golf Club. It was chosen for its excellent championship course, its central location and the fact it has a hotel on site for anyone wishing to stay the night before." The day tees off with bacon rolls and coffee followed by an 18 hole Stableford competition with shotgun start. At the end of play, competitors can sit down to a two course lunch, prize giving ceremony and charity raffle. An array of trophies and prizes will be on offer, including awards for the longest drive and nearest the pin. The cost per person is £99 (including lunch and VAT) or £396 for a team of four. Said Jonny Westbrooke: "We are hoping for teams of four, but pairs can be accommodated and individuals can be matched up into teams. Players will include winners of regional charity golf days." There will also be a number of sponsorship opportunities available for companies wishing to support what is set to be one of the industry's most high profile events of the year. Already lined up is Swan Retail. Said Peter Mallinson, merchandise director (home) for AIS who is helping to organise the event: "As well as raising money for the industry's only dedicated charity, the golf day has always been a terrific event and first class networking opportunity for people working right across the furnishings sector." Glasswells go greener Established 70 years ago, Glasswells are the largest independent department and furniture store in East Anglia and as part of their ongoing commitment to the environment have recently purchased a Kenburn Carpet Crusher for recycling all their carpet and underlay waste. Paul Glasswell comments, “ due to the large volumes of flooring we install its inevitable our fitters will uplift and remove hundreds of square metres of carpet and underlay waste every week”. “By installing a “carpet crusher” all our carpet and underlay waste is now recycled for “waste to energy” as a fuel to power concrete kilns rather than using coal and the recycling costs are significantly lower than landfill so its financially as well as environmentally beneficial”. Simon Wells from Kenburn adds, “Kenburn can visit retailers and contractors throughout the UK and offer no obligation advice on cost saving initiatives for recycling new and post-consumer carpet and underlay waste”. Recovery in contract floor market

900

In 2014 and 2015, the contract floorcoverings market began to recover from a relatively flat period experienced in 2012-13, and growth in 2015 was estimated to have been around 4%, according to a report recently released by AMA Research. This performance was underpinned by strong growth of 7% in the floor tiles sector and by returning confidence in the commercial construction sector.

Contract carpets have faced significant competition from smooth floorcoverings but enjoyed estimated growth of around 3% in 2015, underpinned by higher refurbishment and new build work in the private retail and offices sectors. The contract vinyl market has performed better than both the overall vinyl market as well as other contract floorcoverings materials in recent years. Contract vinyl has been at the forefront of product innovation with the development of a wide range of sector specific products, and the market has also benefited from greater specification of slip resistance and safety flooring in key end-use sectors, including health, education, entertainment & leisure. Demand for wood flooring in the contract sector reached a low point in 2011 but the recent trend has been upwards with growth of 12% to 2015. The contract floor tiles sector was affected by the recession but experienced less severe decline than the domestic floor tiles sector, and good growth in 2014 and 2015 has been due to higher demand from sectors such as hotels, retail, leisure and offices. Prospects for the contract floorcoverings market remain positive into the medium-term, with annual value increases of around 3% currently forecast to 2020. The forecast is based on the strengthening of the recovery for new build and refurbishment work in key private commercial construction sectors, but tempered by forecasts of flat or lower demand from some public sector end-users. The product mix for contract floorcoverings is unlikely to change significantly due to the number of end-use sectors, the range of sector specific products and the propensity for the replacement of ‘like with like’, with carpet set to retain its leading share. A new lower entry at just 200 points means you can start enjoying great gadgets even faster than before and for just four full rolls of Itec flooring purchased. The promotion awards 40 points for twometre wide roll and 60 points for every four-metre wide roll on included collections. “Itec is known for unbeatable value, but we haven’t stopped there as we want to make sure that contractors know just how important they are to us,” says David Bigland, managing director UK, Itec Contract Floors. “The Itec Contractor Promotion rewards the continued efforts of our contractors and is just a small way we can say thank you, but importantly it is also about giving our customers the choice and not just in the gadgets they choose.

A grip on quality Known for delivering quality and value across one of the broadest selections of flooring accessories available in the UK, floorwise has seen growth in its gripper business, with products such as Diamond Gripper proving one of the company’s key sales successes for 2015. Providing carpet installers with high quality gripper that returns to the superiority of old, Diamond Gripper features an increased number of pins across its length, giving better stability and improved hold. The extra width of the gripper also helps to prevent accidental damage to walls and skirting when nailing, making installation a less fussy proposition.

“Just like not everyone wants a smartwatch or tablet, not everyone wants to choose from just one or two selected ranges. So here at Itec we aren’t limiting the incentive to a particular range, instead any floor from the Itec Commercial Flooring Collection is included and with fast access from distributors across the UK, it really couldn’t be easier to get involved,” continues David. The Itec Contractor Promotion is now on and ends on 30th September. Claiming couldn’t be easier and all rewards can be found online at www.itecpromotion.co.uk. T 0800 032 3970

“The growth in our gripper business demonstrates that installers are returning to better quality gripper as they appreciate the advantages it brings,” comments Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise. “Nowadays, more and more carpet is available in five-metre widths, so it’s important that the gripper can cope with the extra stresses and strains a wider carpet brings. The greater number of pins and nails on Diamond Gripper makes it better for power stretching installations too, so it is the ideal product for any fitter’s toolkit.” Diamond Gripper is joined by the Premium Gripper collection, which provides installers with a versatile and value-driven range of gripper. Including options for wood and concrete floors, as well as stick-down options, the Premium Gripper collection comes in medium pin and long pin varieties. Trendsetting live The latest trends to shape homes from the floor up will be at Grand Designs Live London as Quick-Step exhibits its leading laminate, luxury vinyl and engineered wood flooring at this year’s show.

Style with standards F&X Carpets is underlining the quality of its manufacturing and its environmental prowess with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications. These international standards demonstrate that F&X Carpets is taking every step possible to ensure that carpets such as Himalaya wool and wool-rich styles, recycled Aevita and Suretex polypropylene are manufactured to the very highest standards. Gordon Hugo, sales manager, explains: “Here at F&X Carpets we are committed to making collections of the highest quality, regardless of fibre type. By employing independently verified quality management systems as required in ISO 9001 we have made sure that our systems enable us to do this, meaning that retailers and their customers can be confident that a carpet from F&X is not only great value, but of the very best quality.” The ISO 14001 certification examines F&X Carpets environmental processes to make sure they are effective and well-managed. Looking at realistic environmental goals and the processes used to implement them, ISO 14001 demonstrates that F&X Carpets has implemented a strong and effective environmental management programme. “With our Aevita fibre made from plastic bottles, there is no doubt we understand the need to reduce the impact of carpet, but this is far more than just producing carpets that reduce reliance on virgin resources,” continues Gordon Hugo. “Being awarded ISO 14001 is a clear indication that we are making every effort to ensure our manufacturing is as efficient as possible.” T 07976 607657 32 April 2016

Positive POS for smart business Effective POS is essential in a crowded, competitive market but your floor and wall space is a precious commodity that all your suppliers want a piece of. So we’ve selected some of the best displays for retailers to help drive your business in 2016. See pages 33-36. .

Ten tips for top-selling stores 1.

Ensure a large mix of standard and niche products to reassure consumers they have plenty to choose from – even if they ultimately go for something safe.

6.

Create different areas for different product types so that consumers are not confused by too much on offer in the same place.

2.

Mix more expensive items with cheaper products so that the opportunity to trade up is always there – don’t place the high end products on their own or in an increasing price layout where they can be disregarded by customers.

7.

Avoid an ‘industrial’ environment – too many stores are sheds with industrial roofs, lighting and ventilation on show. Use suspended ceilings, black paint and screens to hide the worst parts – the buying environment should be as domestic as possible.

3.

Use your window – too often this is a neglected area but a good display reassures consumers that you’re a smart retailer.

8.

Use soft furnishing, furniture items and flowers around the flooring displays to create a homely environment.

9.

4.

Use your floor! Have the most popular of your higher margin products laid in sections of your floor. Consumers like to buy what they can see in a larger sample.

Avoid empty racks, dead bulbs and dark video screens.

5.

Keep literature racks full – empty displays look tired and complacent and consumers like to have material to take away – and you can clip your business card to it.

from The Stocklists

10. Be careful about locating roll stock – very often it has a prominent position and lures consumers past the higher margin material. Consumers not only know it’s cheaper but the large area helps them visualise it in their own home which is more challenging with small samples.

Point-of-sale and merchandising F&X Carpets has launched four brand new collections under its Suretex brand of stain-resistant carpet, each on their own striking lectern, and each welcoming in a milestone in polypropylene fibre development. Capital, Meridian Deluxe, Meridian Supreme and Casa, join established favourites such as Antwerp to ensure that Suretex remains one of the brightest new brands in residential carpet through a mix of style, colour, great value and the introduction of UV-protection throughout the collection. Using a newly developed Suretex yarn that is extruded in-house, F&X Carpets equips each carpet with softness, resilience and vivid colour, while retaining the bleach cleanability and stainresistance that makes polypropylene a great choice in a wide range of homes. This in-house engineering has also allowed the manufacturer to include UV-protection throughout the Suretex collection. UV rays can be harmful to polypropylene carpets and in areas flooded with light, time can cause severe degradation of the fibre, causing the carpet to simply fall apart. With the special UVabsorbing additives found in Suretex carpets this is prevented from happening, meaning that Suretex carpets provide a better long-term solution. T 07976 607657 www.fxcarpets.co.uk

NEWS Heatwave ahead For years, underlay and underfloor heating have sat uncomfortably together. The reason: to work efficiently, underfloor heating needs underlay with low thermal resistance – and the only suitable products are dense and hard, more suited to commercial use such as hotels. But that’s all about to change with the launch of HeatWave from QA Flooring Solutions. It is the first underlay on the market that combines a tog rating of just 1.2 with a super soft, very pure PU foam that has excellent spring-back, offering excellent comfort underfoot. HeatWave is also flame retardant – making it a safe choice for any home, especially luxury domestic properties where underfloor heating is more commonly used. “HeatWave is a genuine breakthrough in underlay and we expect it to be very popular, as there’s nothing else quite like it currently available”, says Garry Atmore, QA’s Marketing Manager. “Our customers have told us there’s a real need for this product; and this is just another example of QA’s philosophy of creating innovative products to meet those needs.” T 0151 495 3434

New future for Axminster Carpets Axminster Carpets has been acquired by West Yorkshire's H Dawson Wool, three years after the Devon manufacturer was rescued from administration. The leading wool merchant has acquired a controlling equity stake and promises a programme of investment in the business. Axminster's Steve Winslet said: “Our business sells wonderful high-quality carpets that are predominantly made from wool. It makes real sense that our new owners are experts in the sourcing of our primary raw material. Their wool expertise, global reach and long-term commitment to the industry will add real value to our company. We are excited about the future growth aspirations for the business." H Dawson Wool, established in 1888, has for many years been an important supplier to the wool carpet manufacturing sector in the UK and throughout the world. This investment in Axminster Carpets demonstrates the on-going commitment of H Dawson to the wool carpet manufacturing sector and forms an essential element of its strategy to develop alliances throughout the supply chains within which it operates for the benefit of all chain participants. Jo Dawson, Chairman of H Dawson Wool, commented: ““The passion and expertise within H Dawson complements the strengths of Axminster Carpets. We will encourage increased market and consumer awareness about the many benefits arising from the use of wool-rich carpets in a wide variety of environments and applications. The benefits of owning an Axminster carpet go way beyond revelling in the stunning design and beautiful craftsmanship that lives within each product. Amongst their many inherent benefits, these incredible carpets are designed to have a natural ability to absorb dangerous VOC gases, actively manage a healthier climate in your room whilst acting as a flame retardant barrier to your floor!” Axminster Carpets was a casualty of the recession and entered administration in March, 2013. Then a West Country business consortium led by Stephen Boyd bought it out of adminstration and the company's fortunes are much improved, not least with recent new contracts for Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. Flower on Flooring by Dennis Flower

No need to stick to what you know With new products regularly introduced there are increasing opportunities to shorten the installation time of many types of floor covering. We are all creatures of habit and the majority of people are happiest when they are operating within their established comfort zones. However, for those prepared to keep an open mind and consider alternatives, these can lead to improvements in a variety of areas. This is particularly relevant for those involved in the flooring sector, which continues to see new options introduced with the aim of making installations quicker and easier. floorwise managing director Richard Bailey provides the example of his company's recent efforts: "When developing our floorwise range of spray and cartridge adhesives we look towards making sure that our formulations deliver reliability above all else, so that every can or cartridge delivers as installers expect, creating a trustworthy bond that won’t let them down. “Despite our excellent value, there are no shortcuts in formulation or lack lustre performance, each and every can or cartridge - whether F579 Fast Set Floor Fix or F599 Contact Spray Adhesive to name just two is designed to perform, deliver excellent coverage rates and a secure and reliable bond," he says. “Our floorwise can and cartridge adhesives are available right across the UK and Ireland, ready to help achieve a firstrate installation in domestic or commercial applications," says Mr Bailey.

44 April 2016

“When developing our floorwise range of spray and cartridge adhesives we look towards making sure that our formulations deliver reliability above all else, so that every can or cartridge delivers as installers expect, creating a trustworthy bond that won’t let them down.” Loose lay flooring solutions that remove the need for traditional adhesives are becoming increasingly popular, says InstaFloor business development director Shaun Smith, as these can avoid expensive sub-floor preparations and prevent damage to existing floor finishes. "InstaFloor manufactures a range of installation systems made from recycled rubber crumb granules that incorporate a high grab/low grab pressure sensitive adhesive membrane." In most applications InstaLay is loose laid over the sub-floor and the floor coverings are installed directly onto the InstaLay adhesive membrane. This removes the possibility of using the incorrect adhesive or the wrong size notched trowel and ensures that the floor covering has a perfect bond every time, he advises. "With no messy wet adhesives there are no drying time delays and floors can be walked on immediately after installation. InstaLay enables the quick, clean and easy installation of dryback LVTs, click LVTs, tongue and groove hardwood flooring, carpet tiles and ceramic tiles," says Mr Smith. Further options are available from Packexe, which says that because installations can be messy and require trips from room to room, or outdoors to indoors, surrounding surfaces still need to be protected from foot and equipment traffic, dust and debris. Spending a little time protecting floors and interior surfaces can mean minutes or even hours saved after an installation, reducing clean up times and helping to prevent damage from dropped equipment or spillages. The company has recently introduced Packexe Fleece to its protection film range, its first padded and reusable film, recommended for delicate surfaces. The Edge is another new addition to the range; designed for reaching the edge of installation areas, or covering small or awkward areas. With both products designed to take minutes to dispense and clean up, they give extra confidence in protecting surfaces to deliver a quality and professional job. A New Way to Promote Wool to Consumers… WoolRetailer.com Wool retailers are to benefit from a major new force in the market place following the first Wool Floor Show London. Launching the new website to promote wool retailers - the Campaign for Wool has brought a host of assets together to reinforce the benefits of wool and the benefits of a knowledgeable wool retail store. Ultimately it aims to act as a cohesive year round link between the retailer and the leading wool promotional organisations - Campaign for Wool and British Wool Marketing Board and connect them to the vital end-consumer through a number of marketing campaign investments. The website is signing up retailers through an Accreditation programme - let’s find out more…

Become a Wool Specialist… The Campaign introduced the Take Five Wool Specialist programme at Wool Floor Show London. This encourages retailers to do five short tests and become an accredited Wool Specialist. The Take Five programme operates online and once completed allows you to become a registered WoolRetailer.com member. While registration is by tested Accreditation, membership is completely free of charge. The five modules are focused on key areas of product knowledge which help retailers to help customers understand why wool is a good choice and which product may be best for them. “Our aim is supportive - the industry felt it was time that quality retailers had immediate access to education and should be recognised for their knowledge,” Bridgette explained. But although the education element provides entry to the membership, there are a host of benefits lined up once the retailers have become accredited. Registered retailers will be featured online, get a Wool Specialist certificate, a smart badge and a sticker for the door. Additionally, retailers get their own online account and can enter additional criteria about their store. The members dashboard will give them immediate access to POS, brochures, trends and webinars. Bridgette added, “Our aim is to enlist the many good quality retailers that want to define their store by its knowledge and customer service and develop a meaningful two-way relationship that helps us to support them in the way they want and need.”

Voice of the trade Rob Harding – GREENDALE CARPETS & FLOORING Why is it worth a day away from the business to visit the National Buying Group Show? For the independent retailer shows can be a very useful way of communicating with a large number of suppliers in a short period of time. You are also mixing with like-minded independents. At Greendale we buy and stock rolls in our warehouse enabling members to make major savings which, added to own labelling and exclusive areas, equals more profit. Greendale selects a range at a variety of price points and the member can then purchase on a one stop shop basis which makes it easy.

How important are own label and exclusive ranges given the growth of the Internet? Own labelling enables independents to fight the multiples and T with geographical the internet. When taken in conjunction areas it's a very strong package for a small retailer faced with lower service, price based internet competition.

You can be in a group with all the collective strength that brings and still be the same local based quality retail store you have always been. Groups just add that edge to your business. At Greendale you can have your name on our units if you prefer to stress your local identity.

Are you surprised how many retailers are not in a group? Yes. For the return against the investment it's a very easy decision, particularly if you talk to the large number of retailers who have made that choice and never regretted it.

Do manufacturers regard buying groups as a face for good or a necessary evil? As a former manufacturer at both the volume end with Carpets International and the premium end with Ryalux I can definitely say it's the former. Anything that helps independent retailers flourish and prevents us following other industries into being multiple and internet led is a good thing for suppliers. We believe that independent retailers serve consumers best and happy customers is something we all want.

Can groups get in the way of long established supplier relationships? No, we value those relationships. Being in a buying group means that you can get the benefits of bulk buying prices and own labelling to differentiate the product for you whilst in most cases the local rep will still get commission on your group sales. We work closely with our suppliers and their sales forces for the member’s mutual benefit. Do enough members get involved in group meetings and activities? In a perfect world all members would come to everything but that's not possible as we know members have a business to run. I can only talk about Greendale where we find that most events are well attended especially our member shows.

Apart from the price discounts / price advantages what do you think retailers value most about buying groups? At Greendale it's the fact that we make the retailer’s life easier by doing many of the things they would have to do themselves if they weren’t in a group including product selection, order chasing, payments to suppliers and complaint handling. The security of knowing there's someone you can talk to if you have a problem is also useful for retailers.

READERS’ SURVEY

In or out? How will the EU vote affect your business?

The online survey takes less than four minutes. It’s anonymous and doesn’t need any form filling. Please help us inform the industry. Visit www.thestocklists.com and click on the survey banner to take part.

from The Stocklists

Your decision on whether to stay in or leave the EU is one that can wait until the privacy of the polling booth in June, but what should the flooring industry be watching for in this debate? The EU referendum will affect the flooring industry in two completely different ways - one is the impact, positive or negative, in the economics of the business environment we all operate in. The second issue is that of consumer confidence - a key influencer in ‘big-ticket’ purchase decisions - and retailers are likely to see the results of any change in sentiment all too quickly after the vote takes place. What do you see as the greatest opportunities and threats of EU membership? How do you think consumer buying behaviour will be affected by the vote? Are European importers of flooring going to be impacted? Are the business issues getting properly debated in all the noise about migration and sovereignty.

Inform the industry and let us know what you think. Take part in our 3-minute survey! April 2016 49

Multi-Level Loop

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

THE STOCKLISTS April 2016

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 53

Flooring factsheet from Interfloor The resurgence of rubber underlay Research into consumer purchase behaviour commissioned by Interfloor in October 2015 shows more people than ever before are buying new underlay when they purchase new carpet.

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world.

The research suggests this is in part due to improved understanding of the various products and their benefits gained through Internet research and advice from retailers’ own sales consultants. The in-store consumer experience is key to the rising conversion rates, as it gives retailers an opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of the different products on offer. Consumers want hands-on experience of quality products which offer high levels of comfort and are fit for purpose. They are less concerned about price and more interested in long-term performance and this has led to the resurgence of traditional rubber underlays such as Tredaire Colours Red, Interfloor’s premium sponge rubber underlay. Sponge rubber underlays have been around since the 1950s for very good reasons. In fact, Tredaire launched Willow Green, the UK’s first sponge rubber underlay in 1956. Sponge rubber underlays are extremely comfortable; no other underlay product produces quite the same feel underfoot. They are also exceptionally good at minimising both impact sound and airborne sound between rooms. They are incredibly flexible and cover more applications than any other underlay type, including specialist low tog underlays for underfloor heating and thin and dense underlays for hard flooring. In a Stocklist readers’ survey published in November 2015, 30% said they were selling more underlay and although 60% find it easy to sell underlay, only 50% were using POS to demonstrate its benefits – one of the key reasons customers visit retailers is to feel samples (83%) or walk on the carpet to see how it feels (26%). Interfloor offers POS items including custom-made swatch books, presentation folders and hanging samples with instore foot testers coming soon. All are designed to help retailers sell exactly the right underlay to every customer that comes to their store.

Over 80% of those who didn’t buy new underlay at the time of their carpet purchase believe that they can use their existing underlay (57%), that underlay isn’t necessary (19%) or an expensive add-on (12%) and yet underlay is a great opportunity to improve the way the consumer feels about the total purchase – and hence the retailer.

THE STOCKLISTS April 2016

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.

PU foam

www.carpenter.limited.uk

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

THE STOCKLISTS April 2016

www.numa-online.co.uk

Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter

• shedding • pulled loops

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

58

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS April 2016

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Carpet&FlooringReview

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

britishwool.org.uk

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 66

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.
