Displays to die for
You know the importance of quality display material
in your store. That’s why Associated Weavers have invested so much time and money into producing
display schemes that you can use with pride. We have established a reputation for market-leading
displays, merchandising units and graphics with the kind of impact that will stop your customers in their

tracks.
Walk into any carpet store and the consumer can be forgiven for thinking that all the carpets they see
are very similar at first glance. Our display material has been designed to help your sales force convince
the customer that carpet styles and quality vary
enormously. If they are then persuaded by the visual environment around them in store, it’s the
New Vivendi is the hot prediction for sales this year and will be taking the market by storm this month. So confident are we that Vivendi will meet – and exceed – your expectations, we have given it our best-ever double warranty assurance of 25 years for stain and wear issues. Its practicality is also assured because

material that has been designed the best that will appeal to them, their lifestyles, and their budget.
There’s an old adage that says “Advertising draws the horse to water, but it’s the in-store displays that
make the horse actually drink the water”. At
Associated Weavers we know that, for strong
brands like iSense, Invictus, StainAway and Vivendi, we can provide superb ideas for breathtaking display solutions.
Impressive wall displays
New wall displays are our star attraction designed to create the biggest attraction your store has ever had. Modular wall panels feature
high-impact graphics sitting above attractive feeler swatches, topped by stylish integral lighting. They create a comprehensive picture of all Associated Weavers’ ranges, which can also be shown with beautifully constructed free-standing lecterns and furniture display units.

More high-impact lecterns Exclusive iVivo yarn, developed for today’s living
To support this year’s new introductions to our
leading brands of iSense and Invictus, we have yet
more lecterns developed exclusively for your hightraffic areas.
iSense sees new Discretion and Obsession being
added to the collection. Discretion is a soft cut pile 1865gm 100% polyamide saxony in 14 alluring We’re also supporting Vivendi with some of our best merchandising
schemes ever. If your display area is limited, look out for our
unique lectern that will display both the flagship ranges of Soul and Vibes to their best effect. The lectern is beautifully made in mid- to dark-grained grey wood and includes samples, accompanied by some eye-catching graphics.
And remember, you’ll be one of a select band of retailers when
you sign up to Vivendi – we won’t be able to supply the product for your showroom unless you agree to purchase our tailor-made lecterns. It’s an investment that will pay off – handsomely.
colours. Obsession, due for launch in May, is a super soft iSense saxony, featuring 11 contemporary shades.
Undoubtedly Invictus was our hero brand through last year, so we’re enhancing the range with two more styles – Centaurus and Magnificus – which will
also have their own dedicated lecterns. Centaurus features our soft sparkle cut pile technology with nine colours in 1865gm 100% polypropylene, while
Magnificus, also available this month, is a heavier 2210gm polypropylene and consists of a further
15 colours to generate consumer demand. And our research tells us that Magnificus is going to break all record sales for you this year. Magnificent!

Carpet&FlooringReview Time for Timeless
Balta Broadloom introduces new Timeless and Timeless Stripes, collections that not only make full use of 100% Stainsafe Leonis PP fibre for softness and stain protection, but also dovetail one another beautifully for a coordinated look in residential spaces.
Timeless and Timeless Stripes might be super soft and easy to clean, but talents extend well beyond practical credentials, with a spectrum of colours that keep the collections at the tip of the trend curve. Timeless is adorned with 15 plains, with colours including pink, green and trending grey, primed and ready for combination with the four coordinating stripes found in its sister range. “The arrival of Timeless and Timeless Stripes demonstrates Balta’s continued drive for the most complete PP stable possible, offering solutions for all kinds of residential environment,” explains Geert Vanden Bossche, Marketing Director, Balta Group. “We are known for putting a practical spin on our carpets, but equally we pride ourselves on touch and feel, as well as colour choice; this is epitomised by our new introductions, and we look forward to gauging reaction over the coming months.” Timeless and Timeless Stripes bring the chance to recreate this season’s look-of-the-moment: stripes run up the staircase, with coordinating plains used in adjoining hallways and landings. Crucially, once fitted, this is an aesthetic that will last, with 10-year wear and 15-year stain promises arriving as part of the Timeless and Timeless Stripes package, testament to the confidence placed in 100% Stainsafe Leonis PP fibre. Timeless is available to purchase in four and five-metre widths, meaning fewer seams if the location’s hallways, landings and living rooms represent a larger expanse. Timeless Stripes’ quartet of designs are available in four-metre only. T +32 56 62 22 11 www.baltagroup.com
Softly softly
Softly does it as Cormar Carpets launches Soft Focus, its new supersoft easy clean collection.
Manufactured from 100% Finesse polypropylene for a finer ‘super soft’ handle, Soft Focus uses two fold yarn with increased filaments for the ultimate luxurious, silky feel. Available in 13 plain shades from a neutral colour palette of greys and beiges, it retails around £20-25 sq m and has a 10 year stain warranty. Like all Cormar’s easy clean carpet collections, Soft Focus is non fade, stain resistant and bleach cleanable and comes in both 4m and 5m widths. “Offering superior comfort underfoot and outstanding practicality and durability makes this deep pile, heavyweight carpet a winning range,” said David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets. “It comes in a bank of fashionable shades such as Hickory, Hudson Grey and Seashell that have been designed to add style to any area of the home.” All Cormar’s wool twist, wool loop and easy clean polypropylene ranges are produced on site at its Lancashire mills and distributed in the UK and Eire via its own delivery fleet. NEWS Trend focus
Following the success of its launch edition last autumn, Flair has released TrendEdit 2 for the SS17 season, a portfolio of styles that enhances the brand’s position as a trend-focused producer of forward-thinking rug designs.
The TrendEdit concept has been a huge hit since its inception, a collection of Flair’s most exclusive rugs that has on-trend design at its heart. Beautifully displayed in an eyecatching brochure, each range is backed by a spectrum of inspirational photography, resulting in a publication that presents readers with the back story leading to each collection’s development. “We’re really proud of TrendEdit 2, and are hoping it receives a similar reaction to its first edition,” explains Gareth Davies, Sales & Marketing Director, Flair Rugs. “There’s a huge amount of work that takes place behind the scenes to produce each TrendEdit portfolio, with our designers spending days, weeks and months bringing together their latest trends predictions for the season ahead.” This season, TrendEdit welcomes six new lines including Persian Fusion, wool/viscose blends that are beautifully hand carved in a time honoured traditional method, and Cairo, with silky 100% viscose. Also presented are the varied fibres of Eclectic and the 100% stain resistant acrylic Palais, proving that flatweaves are still big news underfoot. Finally, readers are treated to two more Flair Rugs exclusives in the luxury cowhides of Marques, and a unique Sheepskin fibre that finds its origins in Dartmoor’s windswept hilltops. Speckly Spectrum
Using the latest in yarn technology to deliver a unique aesthetic, Spectrum Sound is the latest Balta Broadloom carpet to redefine the way consumers look at residential carpet. The new addition makes full use of the brand’s new 100% PP Stainsafe Spectrum fibre to deliver not only enviable performance and practical benefits, but also a striking multi-coloured effect. This is achievable thanks to the high contrast colour separation that only this new high-tech fibre can provide, ensuring Spectrum Sound a place among very best trend-leading collections. The result is a portfolio packed full of 11 multi-toned flecked effects, meaning a variety of home spaces can be brought into 2017 in stylish fashion. Further to smart looks, Spectrum Sound offers significant 15-year wear and 20-year stain promises, while easily cleanable by bleach solution; in essence, an underfoot option holding multiple talents, and one that will maintain its aesthetic for time to come. Geert Vanden Bossche, Marketing Director, Balta Group, comments: “We are delighted to introduce our customer network to Spectrum Sound, a collection that offers not only a beautifully colourful, but still understated design bank, it also comes with impressive practical qualities and an extended wear warranty to boot. The latter shows how much confidence is placed in the manufacturing methods used, and critically the 100% PP Stainsafe Spectrum fibre that stars in the carpets’ construction.” Spectrum Sound, rated as suitable for heavy domestic use, is available on its own striking POS lectern, demonstrating that Balta Broadloom places careful emphasis on ‘route to market’ as well as the output produced. This ensures the customer experience is one of the highest order, from first contact through to time of purchase. T +32 56 62 22 11 www.baltagroup.com

Capturing imagination
The eagerly awaited roll-out of Granorte’s eye-catching new point-of-sale is already capturing the imaginations of consumers up and down the country, with the first wave of retailers to receive the stands already reporting significant interest. Granorte, the highly-acclaimed manufacturer of quality cork floors, has been the driving force behind the resurgence of this most natural of products in interior design, and store owners are exploiting the upturn in demand as they, and consumers, seek an alternative to timber when selecting wall and floor surfaces for the home. Known for the versatility of its cork portfolio, Granorte uses the new POS to showcase no fewer than 54 tiled options, all of which demonstrate the brand’s intent for 2017 and beyond. Whether original, luxury vinyl or recycled leather cork tiles are selected, this stable provides an array of rustic textures and hot colourways, resulting from hours of dedicated trends research carried out by the Granorte design team. Bob Lloyd of Bailey Wighton, a Tunbridge Wells retailer that is already making full use of the new POS stand, explains its appeal: “Increasingly, homeowners are coming to store looking for something new and something different, to make a real statement in their home. When we first saw the fantastic Granorte products and the new point-of-sale, we immediately knew what a valuable addition this could be to our shop floor. Very few products can offer what cork does, with design, durability, sustainability, comfort, thermal and acoustic benefits all beautifully packaged in one floor type.” All products arriving on this unique POS option are backed by Granorte’s 48-hour delivery promise, with generous sample sizes that really capture the essence of each collection on show. Spring has sprung
In nature, the spring represents a new beginning and some cultures even wait until spring to celebrate New Year. It means you’re ready for a fresh start, in body and spirit. The same thing goes for your house, as Quick-Step unveils the latest trends.
Feeling comfortable in your home has a major impact on your mood and wellbeing. So it’s about time we all left the winter blues behind and allowed a fresh breeze to blow through our interiors. Say goodbye to the Winter King and embrace spring fever. In flooring, parquet remains the top pick: the scent of wood, the feel of the grain, the guarantee of the very best quality... It’s a gut feeling, a kind of nostalgic love at first sight, that makes many people choose the real deal. A solid-wood floor is definitely impressive, but it’s not always the most practical choice. Multi-layer parquet from Quick-Step offers a perfect alternative: 100% wood and extremely stable. The composition of the floorboard (different layers of solid wood with a backing of spruce veneer) prevents the floor from warping due to changes in humidity. The quality is enduring thanks to the superior authenticity and the craftsmanship.. But imitation is fantastic too: these floors are now unbelievably realistic. The look and feel of real wood or natural stone is effortlessly combined with the advantages of laminate and vinyl. Large or small? Every room in the house is different. There are a lot of factors to take into account. The shape and placing of the boards is an important decision, since the flooring has a major impact on the feel of the space. www.quick-step.co.uk.

Sound performance
High performance Polyflor vinyl flooring designed to provide dual sustainable slip resistance and improved acoustic performance within a building was recently installed at Downing Drive Surgery in Evington, Leicester. Designed by BRP Architects of Market Harborough, the refurbished doctors’ surgery features Polysafe safety flooring installed by Excelsior Carpets and Flooring Contractors Ltd, under main contractors Oakwood Construction. Polysafe Wood fx Acoustix PUR in American Oak was fitted in the surgery’s reception and circulation areas whilst Polysafe Standard PUR in Ash Grey was fitted in all the consulting rooms. Lee Hankins from BRP Architects commented, “We needed a hardwearing, slip resistant and easy to maintain floorcovering to cope with the demands of this GP’s surgery which services 6,900 patients in the local area. The acoustic properties of the Polysafe Wood fx Acoustix collection is an added benefit as it helps reduce the transfer of impact sound and walking noise through the building, helping to create a more peaceful environment for patients and staff alike.” Suitable for demanding, high traffic commercial environments like in this healthcare facility, Polysafe Wood fx Acoustix floorcovering provides an impact sound reduction level of 19dB thanks to its integrated foam backing, exceeding UK Building Regulation Part E requirements of a minimum 17dB. Featuring authentic reproductions of high clarity wood designs, this product is also a safety floor, incorporating virtually invisible safety aggregates within the wear layer to create sustainable wet slip resistance, contributing to safer commercial environments. Both Wood fx Acoustix and Polysafe Standard PUR safety flooring range are fully HSE Compliant and classified as low slip potential. Both fully conform to the European Safety Flooring Standard EN 13845 and pass the 50,000 cycles abrasion test. The floorings also feature Polysafe PUR, a unique, cross linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement for advanced maintenance benefits, optimum appearance, colour retention and improved soil release. A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!
The Campaign for Wool International Carpet & Rug Awards 2017 Wool Flooring Award Winners Put Quality and Design in the Spotlight The wool flooring industry gathered last week (15th March) to receive recognition within the second Campaign for Wool International Carpet and Rug Awards. The prestigious event was held at Stamford Bridge, (home of Chelsea FC) where many attendees were also exhibitors at Wool Floor Show London. The Campaign for Wool, Patron HRH The Prince of Wales, established the Awards in 2016 to highlight the diversity and breadth of quality in design, production, innovation and marketing across the carpet and rug sector. Over 65% of wool from the UK and a significant proportion of New Zealand wool is used in flooring. British brands manufacturing within the country showed the internationally recognized excellence of the carpet industry based in the UK. There were over two hundred entries for fifteen categories including some publication sponsored Awards, which link the competition winners to consumer media home interior titles. The winner of the ‘British Wool Award’, which seeks a planet friendly carpet - was Wools of Cumbria Carpets with Silverstripe - a modern cream and grey carpet created using 100% un-dyed British Wool from the Rough Fell, Herdwick and Swaledale sheep breeds and manufactured entirely in the North of England. “This range showed the immense capacity of British sheep breeds to produce a stylish, quality carpet without addition of any other fibres or dye. It is a trailblazer for how carpet can be produced from locally grown wools in the UK,” Bridgette Kelly of the Campaign for Wool said. Other winners included Brintons based in Kidderminster, which scooped three prizes - ‘Woven Carpet Installation of the Year’ in the commercial sector with its RMS Queen Mary 2 Cunard liner entry; its partnership with Stacey Garcia won the ‘Designer Collaboration of the Year’ and its ‘Fleece to Floor’ marketing campaign won the ‘Creative Marketing Initiative Award’.
Hall of Fame Winners The Awards also run the ‘Wool Flooring Hall of Fame’, which recognizes a leading carpet industry and a design sector professional for their career-long commitment. “Winners of the ‘ Hall of Fame’ are chosen for their passion and excellence, for showing influence in their immediate work environment but also externally, showing influence and impact which has helped drive wool forward,” Bridgette Kelly, Interior Textiles Director of the Campaign for Wool said. John Duncan, Chairman of The Carpet Foundation won the Carpet sector Award following a career which started at Victoria Carpets and saw him become joint MD, his contribution to the business led it to a PLC business before his retirement. He then became a constant enthusiast for the wool rich carpet industry at the helm of The Carpet Foundation. Christopher and Suzanne Sharp of The Rug Company won the Design sector Award for reinvigorating the design rug world through traditional production married with designer partnerships and in particular for their focus on ethical and environmental wool production in Nepal. “The judging panel were very impressed by the high standard of the entries this year, it was a real show-case of high standards on all fronts and particularly pleasing to see the engagement - our industry can be very proud of itself,” says Bridgette.

Snapshots from the WFSL showcase at Chelsea Wool wins at Stamford Bridge in key fashion fixture
WFSL at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium has proved a winning fixture for the wool business with a showcase of the best in design and yarn technology for natural fibres. “This is a showcase event that really elevates the status of wool for smart carpets,” says Brigitte Kelly of the Campaign for Wool. “We’re already selling a great story with the performance of the fibre and this event shows how responsive the industry is to the very latest trends.” Highlights included the debut of Axminster’s fashionable new Shoreditch collection aimed at a young aspirational market and Adam’s designery new relationship with posh paint company Little Greene. Victoria showed off the new colours in their superb Velvet and the re-launch of Tudor Twist while Cavalier has high hopes for the new mainstream wool ranges Pennine Heathers and Cosmopolitan. It was also the first outing for Kingmead’s potential new best-selling 80/20 Vitronic Plains launched last month as well as the company’s 100% wool Berber Traditions that comes into the market during April. Cormar’s all wool Malabar has been upgraded to 2-ply with new colours and more strongly defined textures while Brintons are covering all the bases from the QuickWeave fast custom carpet programme to the new colours in their flagship Bell Twist. Ulster are ready to roll out their exciting new ‘boutique’ designs in Fusion and Watercolours. We’ll be reviewing all the new ranges from manufacturers in a more detailed feature in next month’s issue.

Voice of the trade Ian Philp GILLIES OF BROUGHTY FERRY, A MEMBER OF FLOORING ONE What’s the biggest single advantage of being in a buying group? I’d like to take a liberty and say at least two. Naturally there’s the buying strength and benefits whether through rebates, settlement or enhanced trading terms. But I’d also put networking and sharing of information, including problems, that comes from being a part of something bigger. Are retailers right to worry about losing their independence? I think that’s a common misconception. Retailers who are members of a buying group can benefit from all that brings but it doesn’t preclude them from trading with who they want so they actually get the best of both worlds. Overall, what proportion of the retail trade do you think should be members? Every retailer can make their own judgement on that but we could never imagine not being a member. Different buying groups have different qualities and bring different benefits to their members but I would say there’s a buying group that’s right for everybody.
Are there any types of flooring retailer that are not suitable for membership (e.g. too specialist, too small)? Unlike in other uses of this phrase, I don’t think size matters because the available buying groups have different criteria in this respect.
Is there a lack of understanding of how buying groups work generally in the flooring industry? I don’t think so because they have been established for a long time. However, if there is any lack of understanding I think it’s incumbent on all of us in the industry to improve that and act as advocates for buying groups – I certainly am.
Apart from the price discounts/margin advantages, what do you think retailers value most about buying groups. I’ve already touched on this in my first answer but will reiterate that it is a combination of things that are not purely hard benefits. The camaraderie and sense of belonging are very important as are other services such as marketing or procurement, for example, where AIS, the owners of Flooring
One, have a specialist division who can help members with all non-product purchasing from energy contracts to low energy lighting or even delivery vehicles. In fact, anything.
Do manufacturers regard buying groups as a force for good or a necessary evil? You’d have to ask them but my belief is that they’d be crazy not to view buying groups in a positive way. Suppliers that embrace them understand it is a short cut to reaching members and getting them engaged in their initiatives.
Can groups get in the way of long-established supplier relationships? I think they can only add to them. There is no substitute for good personal and business relationships and this industry is built on such. As long as suppliers continue to act in the retailers’ best interests which, after all, are also theirs then the sector will flourish. But longstanding friendships won’t override any poor commercial realities and just as I work closely with all my suppliers so do Flooring One on behalf of the membership.
How important are own-label branding and exclusive ranges to retailers these days? Very important. Independent flooring retailers can differentiate themselves from multiples and the internet on attributes like expertise and service but exclusive or own brand ranges sourced via a buying group give uniqueness and more separation and help deliver better profitability.
Why is it worth a day away from the business to visit the Buying Group National Flooring Show? I would go so far as to say it’s absolutely imperative that any retailer that is part of a flooring buying group pays a visit to the show in May. The BGNFS is such a major show in the calendar and a great central location. It is a perfect opportunity to keep up to date with not only new trends and ranges but also new developments in unitary, in store presentation and to also touch base with over 60 of the key suppliers in the industry.

NEWS Masters march forward
With 449 Master Installers located around the country, most homeowners throughout the UK are within reach of some of the industry’s best trained installation professionals. And as early spring courses are already fully booked, the programme looks set to improve coverage yet further.
Through the Quick-Step Master Installer scheme, the Academy for Excellence in Flooring is at the forefront of fostering a positive environment for good practice in the installation of wood, laminate and luxury vinyl flooring. As a result, homeowners are benefitting from an established network of qualified installers ready to install Quick-Step flooring to the highest standards. The gathering pace of the Master Installer programme, as well as consistent leads through the Quick-Step website, demonstrate the desire for installation professionals that can offer homeowners a unique set of advantages; namely the full support of the manufacturer with a two-year workmanship warranty. This makes the Master Installer programme unique and gives homeowners valuable reassurance that they are dealing with some of the flooring industry’s best professionals. “While we offer a range of courses at the Academy, it has been the Quick-Step Master Installer programme that has been a key driver in establishing us as one of the flooring industry’s leading training facilities.” comments Lee Thompson, technical manager. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk
Cycling into spring
The cycling season is in sight – and here comes the spring! Think detox, healthy eating, getting back into sport and a wind of change blowing through your customers’ homes. Quick-Step combined all of this at an exclusive core stability training session.Together with professional cyclists Zdeněk Štybar and Julien Vermote, a select group of press and bloggers got to work intensively on fundamentals for the body and home. No concrete or cobbled surface this time, but the brand-new Majestic laminate collection.
Quick-Step, the manufacturer of designer floors in parquet, laminate and vinyl, joined forces with the cycling team of the same name at a sports hall in Ghent. The reason is clear: a good basis guarantees a strong end result, and that applies to both cyclists and floors. Quick-Step has created a floor for any room and any style: from light, sleek floors to warm, brown classics and even weathered floors with authentic knots and cracks. But the qualities and technical properties of the floor are important too. To demonstrate the fact that Majestic, the latest laminate collection from Quick-Step, is a perfect fit for a room that stands up to the rough and tumble of real life, the training session was held on this brand-new floor. Majestic is without doubt Quick-Step’s most spacious and luxurious floor to date. The floor brings the warm feeling of wood into the home better than any other, but with all the advantages of a laminate as well. Thanks to the ground-breaking technologies and a waterrepellent Hydroseal coating in the joints, the floorboards have exceptional water resistance. The floorboards also offer good resistance to scratches and bumps, thanks to the Scratch Guard top layer, a patented Quick-Step technology that makes the floor extra scratch-resistant. The unique extra-long and wide planks also provide a perfectly fitting structure that extends over the joints and brings aesthetic balance. www.quick-step.co.uk

Positive POS for smart business Effective POS is essential in a crowded, competitive market but your floor and wall space is a precious commodity that all your suppliers want a piece of. So we’ve selected some of the best displays for retailers to help drive your business in 2017. See pages 39-41. .
ON DISPLAY 2 0 1 7
Ten tips for top-selling stores 1.
Ensure a large mix of standard and niche products to reassure consumers they have plenty to choose from – even if they ultimately go for something safe.
6.
Create different areas for different product types so that consumers are not confused by too much on offer in the same place.
2.
Mix more expensive items with cheaper products so that the opportunity to trade up is always there – don’t place the high end products on their own or in an increasing price layout where they can be disregarded by customers.
7.
Avoid an ‘industrial’ environment – too many stores are sheds with industrial roofs, lighting and ventilation on show. Use suspended ceilings, black paint and screens to hide the worst parts – the buying environment should be as domestic as possible.
3.
Use your window – too often this is a neglected area but a good display reassures consumers that you’re a smart retailer.
8.
Use soft furnishing, furniture items and flowers around the flooring displays to create a homely environment.
9.
4.
Use your floor! Have the most popular of your higher margin products laid in sections of your floor. Consumers like to buy what they can see in a larger sample.
Avoid empty racks, dead bulbs and dark video screens.
5.
Keep literature racks full – empty displays look tired and complacent and consumers like to have material to take away – and you can clip your business card to it.
38 April 2017
10. Be careful about locating roll stock – very often it has a prominent position and lures consumers past the higher margin material. Consumers not only know it’s cheaper but the large area helps them visualise it in their own home which is more challenging with small samples.

Hugh Mackay In 2016 Hugh Mackay raised its profile in the marketplace by putting out hundreds of wall stands, lecterns and tombolas and will continue to do so at the same rate in 2017. As we all know these stands cost a lot of money, the good news is the investment has resulted in a healthy growth in sales wherever they have been placed. Interestingly though, on analysis, the much maligned tombola probably enjoys the best return on investment. Its a really great workhorse. At present the company supplies 4 tombolas: A twist collection, a loop collection and a Hasslefree collection on 12 inch wide; and a full 27 inch tombola for axminsters. This will be joined in 2017 by a 12 inch axminster tombola for stores where space is a premium. T 01429 892555 www.hughmackay.co.uk
Cavalier Carpets The bright, white angular style of the Cavalier display system creates a smart, modern store environment for retailers. The distinctive ‘slim-line’ wall units are 500mm wide modules with up to twelve different carpet cassettes, acrylic graphics and stylish low voltage lighting. Also in the range are contemporary lecterns and a matching single ‘design a drum’ tombola where you can choose any combination of 100 samples from over 300 product options. The latest lauch is a special 62-slot drum for The Stainless Collection

With generous samples for customers to experience the beautiful look and feel of the products, Granorte invites retailers to get in touch to request delivery of this must-have addition to their store. Making flooring interesting and attracting the consumer is the aim. The Curve offer, shows Alternative’s comprehensive wool and natural offer, a set of moveable stairs which showcases their runners and a smart TV which demonstrates their Make Me A Rug online facility. Their popular Barefoot and Quirky carpets are a prominent feature. With the theme that “flooring is not boring”, the wall display comes alive with interesting talking points designed to engage consumers. The narrative is broken into topics that cover the origins, processing and performance of wool in a quirky and humorous style. We’ll be showing a lot more of this fascinating point-of-sale system in next month’s issue. T 01264 335111 www.alternativeflooring.com
Edel Telenzo The ideal in-store companion, Edel Telenzo’s most space saving but equally inspiring point of sale is proving the perfect platform to showcase its Rugs and Runners collection. The Rugs and Runners box allows retailers to present the new collection in all its glory and diversity, practical in size and striking in appearance. While customers can choose a bespoke rug using any of Edel Telenzo’s broadloom carpets featured on its POS, there is also the option to include up to 6 A4 folders of its most popular wall-to-wall designs within the box. This feature is ideal for interiors designers and retailers who do not have access to one of the Edel Telenzo stands, but want to showcase the new Rugs and Runners concept to potential customers. NEWS Recofloor on tour
This summer, Recofloor is planning to visit all its participating flooring distributors across the UK to support them with the UK’s award-winning waste vinyl flooring recycling scheme founded by Polyflor and Altro. The team will be gearing up for their ‘grand flooring distributor tour’ following the annual Recofloor Awards 2017 event on March 29th. Celebrating members’ achievements, this year’s successful event was held at the Kia Oval cricket ground in London. During April and May, Recofloor will be contacting their 66 flooring distributor members to let them know when they’ll be in their area and to arrange a convenient time to visit. From June to September, the team will hit the road to offer Toolbox Talks at distributors’ premises as well as help with customer events, Trade Days and other promotional activities.
FITA representatives Mick O’Flynn, Steve Ramsden and Richard Catt with Mapei Resilient Product Manager John Monaghan.
Mapei backs skills investment
“This will be a great opportunity for flooring distributors to learn more about the benefits of Recofloor membership and how they and their customers can engage more with the scheme that can offer significant savings on disposal costs,” says Recofloor Project Coordinator Carla Eslava. “Members are also welcome to book a morning event with the Recofloor team on site from trade counter opening to noon to explain the scheme to their customers. All with the usual Recofloor goodies of course! Just let us know by phone, email or via the website http://www.recofloor.org/events/.”
Mapei is proud to be sponsoring FITA throughout 2017.The non-profit making organisation provides an important investment into the flooring industry, continually developing training courses whilst promoting up to date installation information and assistance to flooring professionals.
Mapei recognise the importance of passing on skills and best practice through training and demonstrations to the next generation of floor layers. Mapei’s Resilient Product Manager, John Monaghan, commented “The courses FITA offer provides a standard for the industry, along with important technical information about how Mapei products should be used to ensure the correct installation.”
Recofloor has more than 700 collectors based across England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland who benefit from a sustainable scheme that collects and recycles waste vinyl flooring. By recycling their smooth and safety vinyl offcuts and roll ends, uplifted smooth vinyl and luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), members can cut their disposal costs by up to 75%.
Richard Catt, CEO of the Contract Flooring Association said “We are delighted to welcome Mapei to the growing number of companies that sponsor FITA. It is extremely important that we have the support of leading brands such as Mapei and a win-win for delegates who attend FITA courses and use their products. Training with up to date, innovative products is obviously important and it is a fact that what fitters train with is what they are likely to use as they move through their careers. Perhaps as important is that the combined efforts of companies such as Mapei and training organisations such as FITA join together to add value and quality in to the supply chain”

The price isn’t right! Confident retailers feel the market can make more of its margins
70% say flooring should cost more
Just over 70% feel that flooring should cost more, 34% said “a lot more” and when we asked for specifics, retailers averaged out at about 10–15% as the amount they thought retail prices should be increased by.
8% only plan no price
Only 8% of our readers said they were not planning to put prices increase this year up in 2017. “Hallelujah! Signs that we are moving away from a price fixation drive to the bottom of the market,” said a North-East retailer. “We have great say post-vote products that people want - The public will pay to get what they dream of. Profit need not be a dirty word.” sentiment is unchanged In terms of what brings in the profits for flooring retailers, synthetic carpet got the highest score with 36% saying it made the best margin for them. Maybe suprisingly, underlay was next highest on the list and for are more inclined wool carpets, 23% said it made them the most money. A substantial 57% said that the popularity of more expensive man-made fibres had helped to trade up increase turnover. Some commentators have suggested that price sensitivity among consumers was not as high as retailers thought it was and in our survey, 57% are worried about confirmed that they felt sentiment was unchanged after the referendum vote - though 35% said consumers were looking for better deals. interest rates “Retailers can be their own worst enemies, far too often selling a product below the price expectation of the consumer, simply to try and clinch a sale. Be brave, offer quality rather than price,” said a reader from expect to be more the South West. profitable by 2020 A South coast retailer echoed that sentiment: “Our industry is its own worse enemy. But comparing this year to 2018 once Brexit negotiations have started in earnest, 61% expect trading to be unaffected or better – only 14% believe it will be worse. That confidence shows up in sales behaviour. A reassuring 59% of retailers say they are more inclined to trade up consumers than they were a couple of years ago and, again, higher quality synthetic carpets are partly responsible for the improvement with 77% saying they were more confident selling these products than they were five years ago. “I remind every customer that comes through my doors it's about quality and we don't involve ourselves in silly sale gimmicks,” commented a Yorkshire reader. While Brexit is not being seen as a fundamental brake on sentiment, there was some concern about interest rates with 46% saying they expect increase to start limiting consumer enthusiasm to spend on interiors. Finally, we asked what was the biggest factor that is influencing pricing today and 41% said competition with other local independents, 27% cited internet price comparison and 17% gave priority to the pricing of major retail chains. This is a shift from similar surveys in recent years when the internet and retail chains were a much higher influence. 18% said their perception of consumer confidence was the driving factor. The internet angle always brings in a lot of comments. “Retailers with proper shops have to compete by keeping prices low. This makes retailers push cheaper products to try and compete. Everybody ends up selling lower cost carpets with minimal profits,” said a retailer in Lancashire. “The Internet isn't the problem,” says a reader in Worcestershire. “It's the manufacturer's that are the problem by not having a strategy to protect their bread & butter high street retailers from ludicrously low online prices.” But a contrary view comes from Kent: “I think the industry should stop being so snobby and sell their products to all retailers whether they are shop based or work from home. If you work from home a lot of the supposed better brands won't deal with you and that is appalling in this day and age.”

Business rates: ‘Burden is too high’ for retailers
The row on business rate revaluation was only marginally affected in the budget for many retailers who will start to see the higher costs come through their letterboxes this month.
While Government data says three-quarters of business will see no change or benefit from a reduction, research suggests more than a third of retailers are expecting their rates to increase, with 44% expecting bills to eventually rise by more than £1,000 a year, and just over a fifth expecting an increase of more than 40%. There will be something of a North-South divide with the revaluation – the first for seven years – prompting some falls in rates in the North and Midlands but South East retailers could face substantial extra costs. Last month’s budget was preceded by heavy lobbying on the subject and there were some concessions – the Chancellor has introduced transitionary arranagements that cap increases at £50/month for the next year and local authorities have been given a £300m discretionary fund to
provide emergency relief to those hardest hit – although it is less clear how this will be administered. Helen Dickenson of the British Retail Consortium has described the business rating system as “not fit for purpose” and urged a complete overhaul of the system: “The reform of business rates is crucial for the health of local communities across the country. Retailers pay a quarter of all business rates and it is the single largest tax paid by the industry,” she says. “To put it simply, the burden of property taxation is too high. It is a disincentive to invest in physical space.” Many have made the point that the revaluation disadvantages high street retailers compared to out-of-town locations and, especially, online traders. Sainsbury’s boss Mike Coupe argued that, “business rates are an analogue tax, not fit for the digital age. We would ask the Government to carry out a root-and-branch review of business taxation to create a level playing field across all businesses, rather than penalise property-based companies.”
Next month we’ll ask you for your views once the new ratings notices have landed on your doormat!

Flower on Flooring
by Dennis Flower
Beds trend with independent retailer Adding diversity to the sales offering is a tried and tested method to increase revenue for retailers in all sectors.
While many flooring stores have increased their offering by extending the type of product and qualities in stock, an increasing number are also introducing beds and associated items to their showrooms.
National Bed Federation (NBF) marketing manager Simon Williams says the trend to include beds and mattresses has been particularly notable within independent carpet retailers for some time as a "natural fit".
"Beds also typically provide good margins and have a reasonably low consumer complaint level compared to the upholstery and cabinet market," he continues. “For those flooring retailers thinking of expanding into the world of beds, deciding on which brands to stock and what type of products to focus on can be time consuming, not to mention a leap into the unknown.
"We’d always advise to source products made by an approved NBF member, as this ‘stamp of approval’ provides assurance that the products are safe, clean and honest - saving businesses time and offering peace of mind.

a new carpet from you," she continues. "I think more independent furniture stores are becoming 'one stop destinations', including hosting on site eateries/coffee shops," she continues.
"You have to evolve to keep up with the out of town retail parks and this will in turn encourage consumers to shop locally and if there is more than one offering they are more likely to stay at your store," says Ms Schofield.
“All NBF approved National Bed Federation manufacturers must undergo a strict audit carried out by an independent third party to ensure they have processes and procedures in place for supply chain scrutiny and compliance with regulatory requirements,” says Mr Williams.
The NBF is the recognised trade association representing UK manufacturers of beds and their suppliers, offering best practice guidance and advice to the trade and consumers.
Burgess Beds' Jodi Schofield says her company has clients who are flooring retailers that also sell beds: "In my view it makes sense to sell beds. You have an audience at your store who are looking to refurnish their homes and if you are having new flooring/carpet in your bedroom the consumer may be tempted or most likely be looking for a new bed.
"Also to 'add another string to your bow' will create more footfall. Consumers shopping for a new bed in turn may be tempted to buy

NEWS Fast-track fitting
Products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used in the refurbishment of a city centre commercial space in Plymouth.
The site featured floor-to-ceiling windows, making the new Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS adhesive the perfect option for the refurbishment of the flooring. Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS is a temperature tolerant, pressure sensitive vinyl adhesive that combines instant initial grab with ultra-high bond strength to hold vinyl tiles and sheet in place in conditions subject to direct sunlight or extreme fluctuations in temperature, from as low as 20°C and up to +60°C. The site, previously a retail environment, was constructed in the 1970s and required an extensive refurbishment to revitalise and restore it ahead of its reopening as a training beauty salon. Sections of the subfloor indicated relative humidity (RH) levels of above the tolerance of 75%, meaning that the installation of a damp proof membrane (DPM) was required. However, the subfloor was not even or smooth enough to accept the DPM, so contractors pre-smoothed the floor with a layer of Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment. Once the layer of Stopgap 1200 Pro was sufficiently dry, Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane was applied. Stopgap F77 is a solvent free, two-part epoxy resin system which cures to provide a waterproof barrier, in as little as three hours - a perfect solution in fast track building projects. The floor was primed with Stopgap P13, then contractors used Stopgap 600 Base, a fast-drying, deep section base compound to raise the subfloor by approximately 20mm. The raised floor was then levelled with Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment to provide a smooth, even finish to the floor, before luxury vinyl flooring was installed over the subfloor using Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS adhesive. Counting the cost savings
Flooring companies that recycle their waste vinyl flooring through Recofloor can save up to 70% on disposal costs when compared to sending offcuts or uplifted material to landfill.
Since Polyflor and Altro founded their national waste vinyl flooring recycling scheme in 2009, more than 700 collectors across the UK and Ireland are now benefiting from this sustainable alternative disposal route. More than 60 drop-off sites also accept waste vinyl flooring. From April 2017, landfill tax rises to £86.10 per tonne, plus £19 per tonne as the median Gate Fee, according to WRAP’s latest Material’s Pricing Report. In contrast, a Recofloor collection of either four bags or two bins from a member’s premises costs just £30. “With the ever-increasing cost of waste disposal, it makes economic, and of course, environmental sense to recycle wherever possible. Recofloor’s cost-effective and flexible take-back scheme helps firms of all sizes to return waste material for recycling,” comments Carla Eslava, Recofloor Project Co-ordinator. A handy Cost Calculator on Recofloor’s website www.recofloor.org/ cost-savings/ shows how much contractors and fitters can save by using Recofloor compared to the cost of landfilling or skipping their waste vinyl. Waste vinyl can be collected from a contractor’s premises or job site – a helpful service, particularly for larger projects. Recofloor accepts smooth and safety vinyl offcuts and roll ends, uplifted smooth vinyl and luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), which are recycled back into new products, including flooring. The scheme’s Specification Guidelines provide information on identifying the different types of vinyl, what can and can’t be recycled and collection/storage methods. Carla adds: “Keeping materials clean and dry prior to collection is important, as is minimising contamination such as blades or knives, wood and plastic for safety reasons and to reduce hazards. The higher the quality of material collected for recycling, the more of it can be returned to new products.” T 0161 355 7618 www.recofloor.org
Meeting the university challenge
F. Ball’s Stopgap 1200 Pro High Performance Smoothing Underlayment, a fast drying and fast setting smoothing underlayment and Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive, have been used to create a high quality vinyl floor finish in the Atrium building of the University of South Wales. Puma Floors of Cardiff, were contracted to install the flooring in the university building, which had been newly built with raised access metal panel flooring. Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment was applied over a total area of 16,000m2. The smoothing underlayment is fast setting and within an hour of application on the university floor, it was walk-on hard. In addition to its fast setting and fast drying formulation, Stopgap 1200 has been specially designed for use directly over old adhesive residues, including bitumen and carpet tile tackifiers. Stopgap 500 Micro floor finishing compound was used to fill any areas where joints between the panels were showing through the underlayment, to provide a completely smooth surface ready for the installation of a new floorcovering. Puma Flooring then used Styccobond F44, a solvent-free acrylic emulsion adhesive with strong initial tack and high bond strength, to secure the Polyflor vinyl sheet floorcoverings, providing the university with a top quality and professionally fitted floor, in time for the start of term. NEWS Graham retires from pivotal role F. Ball and Co. Ltd has announced that their current Liaison Manager, Graham Wildgoose, who joined the company in 1994, will retire from his role at the end of April.
Fit for purpose
F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS vinyl adhesive, a revolutionary development in temperature tolerant adhesives, has been used to install vinyl flooring, as part of the refurbishment of the Wellington College fitness centre, in Berkshire. Vulcan Flooring, based in Sandhurst, was contracted to install 70m2 of luxury vinyl tiles over a subfloor that was part sand/cement screed and part plywood raised platform. After removing the existing floorcovering, contractors built up the raised platform with timber, chipboard and plywood and applied Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment over the raised platform and the screed subfloor. Stopgap 1200 Pro is a low odour, fast setting, fast drying, two component smoothing underlayment suitable for preparing sound internal subfloors prior to the installation of new floorcoverings. It is particularly suitable for use over old adhesive residues (including bitumen and carpet tile tackifiers) without the need for priming. Vulcan Flooring then used new Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS temperature tolerant vinyl adhesive to adhere the floorcoverings. The adhesive proved to be the perfect product for the refurbishment and enabled contractors to successfully install luxury vinyl sheet and wood effect planks. The innovative formulation of Styccobond F49 limits any movement and holds the floorcovering firmly in place when subject to extreme temperature variations. The adhesive also delivers the instant grab and extended open time associated with pressure sensitive adhesives, which, until now, hasn’t been available for temperature tolerant adhesives. The pressure sensitive nature of the adhesive allows it to continue to build up strength following initial application. As well as offering instant initial grab and high bond strength, the water-based adhesive has been specifically developed for use in conditions, which are subject to extreme temperature fluctuations as low as -20°c and up to +60°c, such as conservatories or heavily glazed areas and is suitable for use over normal underfloor heating systems. In addition, it provides an extremely strong water resistant bond, allowing it to be used in areas subject to water and high humidity.
As Liaison Manager, Graham has acted as a crucial link between F. Ball and floorcovering manufacturers, ensuring that contractors are able to benefit from the best combination of F. Ball adhesives and floorcoverings from over 200 international manufacturers. Graham has also played a pivotal role in maintaining and updating F. Ball’s acclaimed Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG), the flooring industry’s most trusted guide to adhesives and floorcovering compatibility. Commenting on the announcement, James Igoe, Chairman of F.Ball said: “The board of directors would like to express our thanks for the contribution that Graham has made to F. Ball over the past 23 years. He has helped us to create and maintain excellent relationships with manufacturers, resulting in a successful and expanding business.” Graham, added: “In my role as Liaison Manager, I’ve worked closely with manufacturers to ensure that they receive the help and advice they need, with the aim of maintaining F. Ball’s position as the UK’s leading adhesives manufacturer. “Working for a company with such high standards in both product and service has been a privilege. At all levels within F.Ball, there is a commitment to ‘do the best’ - this has assisted me greatly when approaching manufacturers and has made my time at F. Ball a very rewarding experience indeed.” Graham Wildgoose is being replaced by the company’s former National Sales Manager, Paul Starkey, whose role has been filled by Business Development Manager, Darren Kenyon. It’s no surprise that Diamond Gripper remains the go-to gripper product for installers up and down the country, with floorwise sticking to its ethos of quality and value in every accessory brought to market.
Offering exceptional hold thanks to extra width and an increased number of zinc-coated rust-resistant pins, this product is certainly worthy of its place in the versatile floorwise product portfolio. Diamond Gripper, available in pre-nailed options for concrete, wood and dual-purpose, offers assured performance that surpasses the competition, the additional width also helping to speed up projects with reduced chance of damage to walls and skirting. Richard Bailey, Managing Director, floorwise, explains: “We’ve seen a number of imitations come onto the market in recent months, but it’s worth emphasising that none can match the value that Diamond Grippers brings with its impressive specification. Diamond Gripper is not only easy to work with, it also offers reassurance that stretch-fit installations will be a success at the very first attempt. “We’ve also noticed a swell in the amount of thin gripper options available at the lower end of the market, with a reduced ply and pin height that can spell trouble for installations using 10mm underlay or thicker. Inferior grippers result in inefficient use of resources, and can even mean a second call-out to site, but in Diamond Gripper installers have the opportunity to avoid such pitfalls, saving both time and money.” The perfect partner for five-metre wide and power stretching installations, Diamond Gripper is available now through floorwise distributors across the UK and Ireland. NEWS Shining example
F. Ball’s Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS vinyl adhesive, a revolutionary development in temperature tolerant adhesives, has been used to install luxury vinyl tiles in a residential property that is exposed to extreme solar gain, due to having floor to ceiling windows.
The innovative formulation of Styccobond F49 limits any movement and holds the floorcovering firmly in place. Importantly, the adhesive also delivers the instant grab associated with pressure sensitive adhesives, which, until now, hasn’t been available for temperature tolerant adhesives. This makes the installation process quicker and easier. J & S Flooring of Leicester were contracted to install the 30m2 flooring in a new upstairs extension, where the chipboard floor had been overboarded with moisture-tolerant plywood. Firstly, Stopgap 500 Micro floor finishing compound was used to fill in the gaps between the plywood boards. J & S Flooring then used Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS vinyl adhesive to secure the luxury vinyl tiles in place. This new pressure sensitive adhesive offers instant initial grab, combined with ultra-high bond strength, providing contractors with the familiar reassurance of high initial tack and, when fully cured, it develops the strength to hold vinyl sheets and tiles securely in place across a huge range of temperatures. Flooring factsheet from Interfloor Specialist underlays – wood & laminate flooring Interfloor’s British manufactured specialist underlays for wood and laminate flooring offer some of the best noise reducing performance in the industry. The Duralay Timbermate range includes the best-selling sponge rubber brands Timbermate Excel and Silentfloor Gold, a premium underlay with an impressive 53 SONE rating, plus the hardwearing Duratex.
Tests show in-room acoustics can worsen if inferior or lightweight underlays are used with hard flooring; putting a lightweight, air filled, cellular product under wood or laminate creates an echo chamber and more noise, whether it’s generated by scraping furniture, heavy footsteps or reverberation. While many products on the market claim to be acoustic underlays, their impact test results just don’t compare to the low noise levels of Timbermate underlays which reduce in-room noise by up to 30 per cent. Independent tests prove the Timbermate products, with their superior weight and density, significantly reduce acoustic noise levels and all have achieved low SONE ratings. Timbermate Excel is a 3.60mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay; while the top end Silentfloor Gold is a 4.20mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay. Both underlays feature Interfloor’s VapourStop membrane, which helps prevent moisture, and branded backing to help differentiate them from inferior copycat products. For installations where moisture is not an issue, Duratex is a heavy-duty 3.60mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay that offers great performance and excellent value. Manufactured at Interfloor’s Haslingden site, the three products in the Timbermate range are rated highly in the LEED programme. The underlays are fully recyclable at the end of their life; contain not less than three percent pre-consumer recycled material and 5 LEED points are available if used within 500 miles from the point of production. They also meet or exceed the industry standard for indoor air quality as established by the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Green Label programme. And for the perfect finishing touch, Interfloor’s accessories include Stikatak edgings to suit all types of floor, including the 9mm Zig Zag which gives a neat transition between laminate/hard flooring and adjacent stretch carpet installation. For further information, please visit www.interfloor.com
Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 54

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.
www.interfloor.com
Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. www.interfloor.com
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Crumb
Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
PU foam
Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.
www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk
Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.
www.underlay.com
Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
THE STOCKLISTS April 2017
www.numa-online.co.uk
Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).
Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.
Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 58
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
Flattening
Shedding
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading
Indentations
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 60
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
SAFE
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
DURABLE EASYCARE
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Comfort
COMFORT
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Safety
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 61

Tip Sheared
Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE
Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.
