Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE The WOOLSAFE Mark has gone Green! The WOOLSAFE Organisation has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal and EcoLogo in North America, to enable those WOOLSAFE approved products that are ecologically responsible to be recognised and promoted as such.

The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

Regular Maintenance

Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Periodic Cleaning

When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approved products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package: WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.

General Rules for Spot Removal • Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth • Scoop up or scrape off solids

Chemspec Europe is one of the first WOOLSAFE Licensees in the UK to have a ‘green’ product certified. It is expected that other products will follow shortly.

For the widest range of WOOLSAFE approved products www.chemspec-europe.com

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment – if unsure, use solvent first • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards • BLOT, do NOT rub

• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles • When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves. Protective treatments Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular cleaning is still required.

Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDER section.) Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

The original carpet tile

SHEDDING

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.

6

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

• shedding • pulled loops

SPROUTING

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADING

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATIC

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990). THE STOCKLISTS August 2009

PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.

The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course. THE STOCKLISTS August 2009

FLATTENING

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

SOILING

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages

- Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil

carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.

T HE R EGENCY

Collection

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop. Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality. Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home. Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is BONDED Tip Sheared Level Loop Tip Sheared Level Loop Sheared Level Loop a versatile, textured finish that is idealTipfor plain colours. Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then used for commercial carpet tiles. sheared to give a smooth finish. Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.interfloor.com

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

www.interfloor.com

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Benefits

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Types

www.floorwise.co.uk

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired

We tick all the boxes!

Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to.

Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours.

A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line.

Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.

As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others.

the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality

Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.

Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of the product range to consumers with a market-leading modular POS system which they will deliver and design to suit your store.

Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland.

Furlong believes in working in partnership with their customers to provide products and services that ticks all the boxes.

100% recycled carpet Mohawk International takes old plastic bottles and turns them into beautiful, luxurious carpet... Hard to believe we know, but a plastic bottle you drink from today could one day become fibres in Mohawk’s carpet.

Make the most of the consumer’s love of all things green with the new Environmental Tombola featuring carpet manufactured from 100% recycled material

Polyethylene terephthalate (P.E.T) is the top quality resin required in the production of plastic drinks bottles. When recycled, it can be extruded into fibres that are far superior to lower-grade synthetic virgin fibres used in making other brands of carpet yarns. Mohawk recycles over 3 billion plastic bottles each year. By controlling every aspect of “Mohawk recycles over 3 billion the recycling plastic bottles each year.” process, Mohawk guarantees the highest standards of performance in its luxurious and beautiful carpet. From bottle to floor - that’s how we do it.

Retailer focus from Ryalux Last year’s National Floor Show was buzzing with excitement after delegates visited Ryalux’s stunning roomsets at The Old Swan Hotel. This year, Ryalux is taking a major stand within the Harrogate International Centre, and is set to wow visitors all over again.

The innovative carpet manufacturer’s stylish stand focuses on Ryalux’s impactful collections, from the Pownall and Simply brands right through to the V&A and Rya Collections, and displays the new POS for each brand. Darren Clanford explains: “Last year was about Ryalux reclaiming a bit of the limelight, and showing off the fruits of all the hard work we had put into creating the V&A Twist Collection in conjunction with the V&A Museum.

“We have always understood the importance of the retailer in the carpet selection process, though, which is why we have conducted extensive research with retailers into the psychology of shopping in the retailer environment, and took the findings into account in the development of the new POS for each of our new collections. And on this year’s stand, the results of our retailer-centric approach are very apparent.” Stand B12 T: 0845 652 8811 www.ryalux.com

Gold standard for Novostrat Once again Novostrat will be showcasing their high performance underlay product range at this year’s National Floor Show. Despite the economic climate Novostrat’s Sonic Gold Excel, their highest specification underlay for wood and laminate floors, achieved significant market penetration in it’s launch year, winning ‘Best Underlay’ Award at one of 2008’s premier flooring exhibitions. This year Novostrat will be building on that success whilst also focussing on their ‘High Performance – High Value’ products such as ‘Comfort Superior’ and ‘Comfort Silver’ for wood and laminate floors and their ‘Graphite’ underlay for carpets.

All Novostrat underlays have two things in common:They are all light in weight so they can be managed, transported, carried and installed with minimal logistical or H&S considerations, and they are made using polyethylene foam which has a low tog rating which means they are ideally suited to working with underfloor heating.

News Bostitch nails the job International pneumatic tool company Stanley Bostitch has announced the launch of its new manual hardwood flooring nailer, the MFN201-E, which carries 7 year limited warranty and is available nationwide from Stanley Bostitch stockists. The new MFN201-E manual flooring nailer, which doesn’t require an air compressor or hose, features a ratcheting drive mode that allows the user to strike the driver multiple times if the cleat is not set flush after the first blow. This reduces re-working from fasteners that are not fully driven thanks to a functional, more forgiving design than non-ratcheting models. The drive mode can also be changed to a single blow operation in seconds, without the need for tools.

The MFN201-E drives ‘L’ shaped flooring cleats from 38 – 50mm and comes with a magazine capacity of 200 fasteners. The tool is supplied with a robust yet lightweight soft-faced graphite mallet, which can be used to position each piece of flooring as well as for driving the cleats. The tool itself is made from aluminium for added durability and weighs just 4.3kg.

Tim Ramsey, European Marketing Manager, commented: “The new manual flooring nailer is a strong addition to our flooring range and will make light work of what can be a time-consuming, uncomfortable job.” T: 08701 630 630 www.bostitch.co.uk

Allied sinks… with a lifeboat Allied Carpets has salvaged 51 stores from its estate of 218 outlets after the business finally entered administration last month – the move has protected some 400 jobs. The company says it will be fulfilling oustanding orders and has assured customers that deposits are safe.

The business has been struggling for many months with reduced trading on already thin margins and independent retailers have been critical of Allied’s deep discounting policies that they feel were damaging the sector’s product value.

The beginning of the end came when Allied was bought by retail rescue investors Hilco in March this year, through an offshore fund Sigma Capital. The new owners have since been developing a refinancing and restructuring deal. Now, technically, Allied Carpet Properties is in administration while the 51 rescued stores have been sold to a separate company called Allied Carpets Retail. This sales includes the group’s insurance business. Clive Hutchings, CEO at Allied, commented: “Allied Carpets is a good business, and through this sale and additional funding now has the opportunity to strengthen market positions, build on the Allied brand and ensure an ongoing commitment to unrivalled customer service”. Stagnation in the housing market was blamed by Dermot Power, a partner at administrators BDO Stoy Hayward, who added: “Allied Carpets is a well established brand in the marketplace but like many companies, has suffered because of the economic climate and difficult trading conditions.” Since January 2008 until June this year, 7,250 retail stores have closed down – including the 807 Woolworths’ premises.

Buyers’ market for cash-rich firms 1 in 6 companies in the UK Floor Coverings industry could change ownership as a result of the current economic climate, claims a new study by leading financial analysts Plimsoll. With a surprising number of “cash rich” competitors waiting in the wings, the market could be set for a prolonged period of consolidation.

David Pattison, author of the new Plimsoll Industry Analysis – Floor Coverings, explains, “I am sure any director worth his salt would agree that, in the current climate, there are simply too many companies chasing too little market. With many directors eyeing the exit doors and highly leveraged buyouts consigned to history for the time being, it really is a buyers market out there for cash rich companies” Pattison continues, “In the Plimsoll Industry Analysis we have identified 147 companies that have a sizeable cash reserve sat on their balance sheets that, due to record low interest rates, is generating nothing. One company has a £695 million cash pot; a whopping 80% of turnover. These companies are now in the position to buy up large chunks of market share at rock bottom prices and make that money work for them. They must be like kids in a sweet shop at the moment – all those distressed competitors available at a fraction of their true value”.

“The UK Floor Coverings market is still widely regarded as one of the UK’s most fragmented sectors. In our report we analysed 543 companies with a turnover of over £1 million per annum and have picked out 172 that are primed to be taken over. Buying one of these businesses represents a massive opportunity for someone to enhance their share of the market. Either way, the market is set for a wave of takeovers in the next months”.

News Famous flatweaver joins Foundation Roger Oates, renowned for re-inventing the tradition of flatweave flooring to create contemporary runners and rugs for the 21st century, has joined the Carpet Foundation as a Patron Member with effect from 1 August 2009. The recruitment of such a high profile consumer brand is a major boost for the Foundation in these unprecedented difficult trading conditions. Commenting on his decision, Roger Oates said: “I have long admired the work of the Carpet Foundation and think they do a fantastic job promoting carpet as well as an awful lot of unseen and unheralded work on technical and environmental issues. I hope our involvement will increase our standing in the industry still further and offer us greater opportunities to work with other members.”

Carpet Foundation chief executive Mike Hardiman is delighted: “To recruit such a well known name is testimony to the standing of the Carpet Foundation in the wider industry. Roger punches well above his weight with the media and our alliance is a great coup for us. 60-minute Hyper makeover ITV’s 60 Minute Makeover is now relying on Hyper underlay from Floorwise to ensure that homes gets the right carpet underlay for their needs. Floorwise is working with the 60 Minute Makeover production and design teams to equip homes with the recycled and recyclable PU foam underlay, but to also make sure that the Hyper underlay selected meets the needs of the particular location. Richard Bailey, managing director, said: “Shows like 60 Minute Makeover often encounter user specific demands such as the need for wheelchair access, or extra underfoot support for the infirm and in these situations we would always opt for the SHD HyperLIFT or HyperTREAD products. However, sometimes the show may be refurbishing a child’s bedroom and so here we would recommend the less dense SD products such as HyperLUSH, HyperGO or HyperSTART.”

With well over 1.5million viewers per show, 60 Minute Makeover is one of the nation’s most loved home renovation shows, particularly with its humanist angle, helping people that have been through difficult times, those that have given countless hours to their community or others who simply can not afford a makeover due to reasons beyond their control. “With Hyper we have an all-encompassing range of carpet underlay that is designed to meet the needs of all areas of the home, as well as provide an answer to user specific demands,” concludes Richard Bailey. News F. Ball marks the occasion F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has announced that it is CE Marking its powder underlayment products, highlighting the high standard of this product range. Allowing the free passage of construction products within the EU, the CE Mark indicates a product’s conformity with the applicable European requirements. Subjecting the products to the appropriate testing procedures under the Construction Products Directive, demonstrates suitability for the European market.

Applicable to all construction products, the Construction Products Directive is designed to remove the technical barriers to trade between member states of the EU, ensuring the free movement of a product within the European single market. As current legislation makes importers to the EU liable for the products they import, CE Marking also provides the importer with reassurance regarding quality and safety of the products. Richard Harris, Marketing Manager at F. Ball, comments: “Although not currently a mandatory requirement for the UK, F. Ball is taking the initiative regarding CE Marking for its underlayment range. CE Marking clearly demonstrates that F. OF THE TRADE

Richard Bailey Managing Director of Floorwise

It’s a lot tougher out there than a year ago and while I hope we have got through the worst I don’t see signs of an upturn. Either way, there are massive opportunities out there for companies like Floorwise who’s ethos is based on offering value for money. If the product and it’s performance is good and the deal is right you can still grow in this difficult market.

“ What’s the key market issue/challenge today?

The challenge is to remain pro-active in your approach to the market and be adept at managing your resources – a recession can be healthy if it helps businesses understand their costs.

What’s the single most important key to success in flooring?

I think a focus on profitability is essential – both for our business and our customer’s businesses. You have to have the right product at the right price but you must understand the arithmetic of your business enough to monitor your profitability. Sales at any cost is a mug’s game – but some companies end up there without always realising it.

Which companies in the trade most impress you?

To my mind, the most impressive businesses are the most innovative businesses – innovative in their thinking, in their design and in their products. The difficult market has sorted out these companies from the others and there are still a lot of businesses that are thriving because they are forward-thinking.

To my mind, the most impressive businesses are the most innovative businesses – innovative in their thinking, in their design and in their products And most disappointed you?

How would you describe current markets conditions compared to a year ago?

I do feel there is a lack of enthusiasm among some UK companies (by no means all) to explore new ideas and support new initiatives. There is still a lot of inertia and closed minds out there which overseas competitors are able to exploit.

Who has been your biggest influence in business?

I suppose there are lots of influences and that’s the way I like it. I like listening and discussing and debating all the possibilities as openly as possible with as many people in the business as I can.We all have lots to learn from each other and the industry as a whole can do better business this way.

What was your first job in flooring?

If you could ask retailers to change one thing, what would it be?

I’ve been in the flooring industry 10 years which is the 10 years I have been at Floorwise. I’m a trained marketing professional and have worked in marketing jobs with roles in blue chip companies within the printing, textiles and communications industries before flooring.

What has changed most in the last 5-10 years?

I would definitely recommend this industry to anyone wanting to work in it. Flooring is a really down-to-earth industry in a nice, positive way and it’s full of people who are good at getting on with people even when they are competing with each other.

I would love to see retailers give underlay a better presence in their stores compared to carpet – a presence that is a true reflection of the profit it makes for them – or could make if it had more presence! They should always make quality underlay a key part of their pitch – for their benefit as well as ours. Apart from my hair (which was fairly grey before the recession but hasn’t been getting any darker since!), you have to say that the competitive environment has got more intense and the competition is much more global.

In your time in the trade, what has most surprised you?

Would you advise a member of your family to come into the flooring industry?

If you didn’t work in this industry, what would have been your second choice career? (Should it have been!?)

I would like to say ski instructor, but that’s probably wishful thinking and a love of the Alps more than the quality of my skiing!

The versatility, adaptability and entrepreneurial spirit of the independent retail and contract trade. Excelling in a market place rather than being dominated by the multiples, sheds and PLCs.

Flower on Flooring News The plank gang

Among the ebb and flow of flooring trends – many of which have risen to prominence before waning then, in some cases, enjoying a return to popularity – plank floors of all types have enjoyed continuing relative

Proof of the popularity of plank can be seen in the variety of options now available, from solid and engineered wood to laminate and vinyl, the market has seen suppliers in all areas embrace the trend. The various ranges of one-strip floors available from Kährs, spanning numerous species and finishes, is a prime example. Included within these is the company's new Classic Nouveau range, which features six European oak wood floors with brushed surfaces and distinct bevelled edges to emphasise the plank format.

All floors are offered with a choice of durable matt lacquer or nature oil prefinish in a variety of shades, from pale toned Snow to deep toned Black. These have been developed to provide solvent-free enhanced performance while emphasising the natural wood grain. There are also many other other one-strip wood floors available throughout Kährs Original 15mm and Linnea 7mm ranges, all offered with 30-year and 12-year guarantees respectively. All feature the company's eco-friendly multi-layered construction, designed for stability throughout all humidity levels, along with the company's glueless Woodloc joint for fast and gap-free installation. Among its many options of solid wood, laminate and cork floors, German manufacturer Haro has developed a variety of plank designs. One of its most recent introductions are six Toscana 2500 products added to its established Toscana plank range. These have been designed to provide quick installation combined with high quality appearance and competitive pricing, the company states. Features include a sandable 2.5mm top layer, four-sided micro bevel and the new Drop Connect installation system. Further benefits of compact format and low weight – the planks are a mere 11mm thick and 1m long for ease of handling and storage – add to the ease of laying, the company states.

for a wider colour range. It has therefore developed finishes ranging from dark to bright and provides long lasting protection through the use of the Permadur matt finish.Another to offer a considerable choice of plank flooring is Balterio, which has a wide range of high quality laminate designs that are designed for ease of installation and maintenance. Incorporating a selection of rich, contemporary decors and finishes, the company's ChromeZone technology ensures realistic effect and choices for consumers to consider for use in every room. The company states that controlling its entire supply chain allows it to provide high quality laminate flooring, using only environmentally PEFC wood, with long lasting guarantees. Balterio's Click Xpress’s installation system is another feature, designed to provide simple fitting.True Matching technology has also been put to good use, allowing the company to provide skirtings and profiles that match its laminate flooring ranges.

Vinyl flooring provides yet more options for those sourcing plank flooring, with ease of maintenance proving popular with consumers. Stepper is the latest range of LVT plank flooring from IVC Group, which includes self-adhesive installation for consumers seeking to transform interior design quickly and obtain maximum value from their flooring choice. The company states that Stepper is available in four wood style collections – Silhouette, Balance, Passion and Essential.

Each is available in a variety of wood decors, ranging from the light tones of Silhouette through to the rich dark shades of Passion. All of these carry a 10-year guarantee and also feature the Super Guard wear layer for excellent durability and ease of maintenance. The range can be laid in different installation patterns, is suitable for bathroom use and can be completely recycled. Installation of Stepper simply requires a clean, level and dry subfloor.

Oak continues to be the most popular species, Haro reports, but there is now more demand

The British Wool column Good images of carpets and rugs...

The British Wool Summer Showcase in June

Introducing a collection of new British Wool room set images to the guests, the BWMB announced a long term programme intended to provide high specification photography to the consumer publications which will reflect up to date trends for interiors.

Positive response to first British Wool summer showcase British Wool held its first Interiors Summer Showcase event in Harrogate at the end of June and officially launched its ‘Origin is Everything’ campaign to a group of invited editors and interior design specialists. Featuring a wide range of product from a selection of British Wool manufacturers, guests had a chance to look at the latest designs and colours available to the market in both carpet and rugs.

A presentation on the new campaign detailed the background of the British Wool Marketing Board as a farmer’s organisation which sells wool from over 50,000 wool producers in the UK.

“We wanted them to understand how our organisation works and what it does. There is no other Marketing Board like this in the UK or across the world and so explaining the extent of our role is crucial to what we are striving to achieve with this campaign,” Bridgette Kelly, Public Relations Manager at the BWMB explained.

“The basic lack of good ‘carpet in room’ imagery hinders the carpet industry and prevents it from getting the level of coverage it needs in magazines that guide the consumers. This is a long standing problem and we need to address it. We have committed to building up a library of images that will showcase carpet in the right way. This was very well received,” says Bridgette Kelly, Public Relations Manager at the BWMB.

Editors spent the afternoon mingling whilst looking at showcase product from a small number of carpet and rug manufacturers and the consensus was very positive. “They were extremely receptive to the event and to the different aspects of the campaign. The ultimate aim is to build support for British Wool licensees and to increase the visibility of carpets and rugs in interiors and lifestyle publications through a number of different marketing activities,” she said. Bridgette summed the event up as a great success, “We wanted it to be very easygoing and the emphasis was on enjoyment, fortunately the sun shone brightly and they could finish the day with a glass of wine on the veranda, which always helps.”

All about the wool...

The campaign itself is all about the heritage of the fibre – the fact that British Wool is naturally grown, is fully sustainable and is from sheep run by our own British farmers. The message replaces the ‘British Wool...naturally’ campaign which ran for many years. Bridgette commented: “We felt it was important to say something more meaningful, something that reflected current trends particularly the eco-theme and the British trend that has emerged strongly in recent months. Some consumers are clearly questioning the content of the things that they buy on a number of different levels. We wanted to connect to that – so that they do question and choose more carefully and in turn make British Wool a lifestyle choice. “

New website designed to inspire...

John Snee of Westex Carpets discusses his carpet collection with a visiting editor.

Presenting information to the consumer is also a fundamental part of the campaign and the BWMB launched their new website to the consumer editors at the event. Aboutwool.com has been designed for consumers – it is intended to inform and inspire whilst also providing immediate connection to licensed manufacturers with British Wool product. Part of the new website is the new British Wool Look Book which provides a selection of themed presentations so that the consumer can get ideas, colours and suggestions - all intended to help them visualise how British Wool product can be used within their homes.

“Inspiring is key to the new campaign and we will be using a variety of different techniques to bring this to the consumer – the British Wool Look Book will be updated during the year and will become a fully interactive tool on the website in the coming months”, says Bridgette. 50

retailers respond to industry issues

The net... or not? Retailers blast e-business for margin erosion The net’s not working well enough for UK retailers - and manufacturers risk devaluing brands and promoting margin erosion online says our survey.

and I feel we are losing out on some of these internet sales.”

Another survey respondent said online retailers operating on 10% margins are “devaluing the brands and turning retail outlets into showrooms for the web.” He added: “The manufacturers need to realise that the more of this type of practice goes on, the less retailers will be willing to show their products”.

The Stocklists sample were self-selecting and maybe more interested in the net than most – especially given that our surveys are online. 75% had their own website and more than half had paid for listings or advertising on third-party websites. Three-quarters believed the internet had generated some 70 business for them.

“Independent retailers with their own premises are the future of this trade and deserve protection from internet cowboys,” said one irate retailer who advocates a boycott of manufacturers who sell direct online.

The strong criticism of manufacturers’ policies in this area was a repeated and unexpected theme of the survey results. “I think that the main responsibility remains with the manufactures in dealing with the correct companies. i.e. people who actually have retail premises and actually stock their products and do not under sell the product,” said another retailer who added: “One way around this problem is to only offer a full manufacturer’s guarantee if you have the carpet fitted by the company you purchased the carpet from?” “Retailers on the internet are carving the prices up on supply only hoping for large quantities at small margins,” said a store in Buckinghamshire. One store who contacted The Stocklists, had already stopped stocking rugs from certain suppliers due to heavy discounting by online competitors. “I believe that manufacturers should promote their products on the internet and list recommended retail prices and then supply a list of bona-fide retailers.” The Stocklists polled more than 300 retailers with a series of questions on e-commerce in the flooring industry.

The web now accounts for 17% of UK retail spend – about £40 billion annually – but the perception is that the internet has had a shaky start in the sector with some false starts in various areas. Only 17% of respondents felt the internet was ‘very important’ to the trade and just 4% thought carpets were suitable for selling on the web.

A Yorkshire retailer echoed the sentiments of many: “There has been a few attempts by the industry to embrace the internet with carpets in mind. However I feel this has little impact on most carpet sales. Laminate flooring has seen a bigger increase of our customers' comparing our prices to that on the internet, 54

August 2009

And from the Home Counties, “The web has affected things like underlay, Karndean, Amtico and wood flooring more than carpet as these products are easier to judge colour over the internet compared to carpet.”

Most retailers felt that sales loss to the internet was low with more than half saying they felt the figure would be 5% or less. Nevertheless, most retailers, more than 70% expected flooring e-commerce to grow steadily with 8% anticipating rapid growth.

“Independent retailers with their own premises are the future of this trade and deserve protection from internet cowboys.”

“Retailers on the internet are carving the prices.”

While it’s easy to criticise, enlightened retailers know the net’s here to stay and it’s smarter to work with it than against it. “We have successfully used the web as a shop window over the past five years, and feel that a web presence is essential,” said one such business owner. “My belief is that customers will always want to see and feel a carpet before buying it, and there is only a very small minority who will visit a retailer to see a carpet then go on the web to find the same product cheaper.

“We have in our favour that carpets are on the whole bulky, and expensive and inconvenient to deliver over a large distance. We must try to clinch a deal before the customer goes on the web and searches by lowest price - isn't it better to stress the benefits of great customer service, experience, and guarantees, than just letting a customer buy on price alone?” 72% of respondents visited flooring industry websites on a regular basis and of the main industry websites, 78% said they had visited yourfloors.co.uk and 69% visiting carpetfoundation.com. 68% said they had visited the carpet promotion site funonthefloor.com.

Promotional email, an increasing component of the internet marketing mix, seems to be under-developed in our sector. Two thirds of respondents said they had never or hardly ever received email marketing from a flooring company and when they did, more than half said it was poorly presented. Email messages generally seem to be much less a part of business life in flooring that might be assumed in other sectors. Only a third said they regularly used email to communicate with customers but much more surprisingly, just 16% used email to communicate with suppliers on a regular basis.

“Customers will always want to see and feel a carpet before buying it.”

Flooring Forum

The Flooring Forum is a new service from The Stocklists to help the industry talk to itself about key issues including marketing, service, products, quality and the environment. Retailers respond to an online survey and are also encouraged to leave ‘soapbox’ comments. The anonymity of responses is preserved so that retailers can say what they really think. If you have a topic you’d like to see debated in the Flooring Forum, please email David Spragg at davidspragg@thestocklists.com If you would like to participate in future surveys, look out for the next topic promoted in this magazine or email davidspragg@thestocklists.com and we’ll add you to our list of retailers we invite by email each time a survey is published.

Live debate at Harrogate

The Stocklists has been asked to host a seminar on e-retailing at the National floor Show with a panel including yourfloors.co.uk, Sitemakers and SPG Group. Tuesday, September 8,

“We have successfully used the web as a shop window - a web presence is essential.” from The Stocklists

“Manufacturers need to realise that more e-commerce means less retailers will be willing to show their products.”

“Manufactures should deal with people who actually have retail premises and stock and do not under sell the product.”

News Green award doubles credentials All best-selling commercial floorcoverings from Polyflor now offer the highest attainable environmental performance credentials following the award of BRE Green Guide `A’ ratings to all products in the comprehensive Polysafe portfolio of sustainable sheet vinyl safety floors.

“This more than doubles the choice of Polyflor `A’ rated floorcoverings available to environmentally conscious specifiers and end users, following the award of `A’ ratings last year to the vast majority of our decorative heavy duty homogeneous vinyls,” says Polyflor’s Simon James.

PolyFlor stars in TV treatment The eye-catching decoration of Polysafe Mosaic sheet vinyl safety flooring has won the product a starring role in “Casualty 1909” - a new BBC TV hospital drama set at the dawn of the 20th century. The series, which began broadcasting in May, is set in a 1909 version of Liverpool Victoria Hospital, recreated in the former Sharp Electronics factory in Newton Heath, Manchester.

Salford-based flooring contractor MB Flooring Services supplied over 400m2 of Polysafe Mosaic for the project which was designed and specified by Wards Scenic Services of Manchester.

“We obviously needed to replicate the ambience of the 1909 hospital as closely as possible,” says set designer Paul Ward. “We chose Polysafe Mosaic for our version’s corridors, reception area and operating theatre because not only does it closely resemble the marble floors of the period, but it looks great and offers slip resistance to the actors on the show.” In the real world, non-directionally patterned Polysafe Mosaic is suitable for a number of commercial areas where slip resistance is required, including corridors, receptions and general circulation areas. Eminently suited to hospitals and schools, Polysafe Mosaic is also ideal for use in traditional safety areas where spillages can occur, such as bathrooms, toilets and changing rooms. The safety floor combines clear aluminium oxide and coloured quartz particles within the full thickness of its 0.7mm wear layer to provide enhanced, sustainable slip resistance.

The range offers a choice of nine vibrant colourways featuring a special high density flake design with pearlescent chips, thereby adding an attractive shimmer effect and increasing the visible depth of the decoration. In common with all Polysafe ranges, Polysafe Mosaic complies fully with HSE Guidelines, providing sustained slip resistance throughout its guaranteed 10-year life and achieving 36+ on the RRL Pendulum wet test (Slider 96/Four S rubber) with a surface roughness of 20 microns and above. In common with all Polyflor sheet vinyl floorcoverings, the flooring can be welded at the seams and to coved skirtings to create continuous, impervious surfaces offering no sanctuary to dirt and bacteria. Independent test results demonstrate that Polysafe Mosaic also inhibits the growth of MRSA on the flooring. An effective cleaning regime is, however, the most important defence against infection T 0161 767 1111

www.polyflor.com

from The Stocklists

Seven Polysafe safety ranges – Polysafe Corona, Astral,Vogue Ultra, Strata, Standard, Hydro and Ultima – are now certified alongside Polyflor Prestige PUR, Mystique PUR, Classic Mystique PUR, 2000 PUR, XL PU and Standard XL through BRE Certification Ltd for their environmental profile. When the Ecopoints measured and reported in the certification are compared to BRE’s Green Guide to Specification all products achieve the highest possible `A’ rating over a 60year service life.

In addition to the new `A’ ratings, Polyflor sees the low maintenance characteristics of Polysafe as offering a particularly significant environmental benefit. As with the homogeneous polish-free PUR products the low maintenance benefits of Polysafe, greatly reduce water and chemical usage and produce significant maintenance cost savings. T 0161 767 1111

Big catch for FTBA The Furnishing Trades’ Benevolent Association (FTBA) has reeled in around £2,000 thanks to another successful National Fishing Day.

The one-day match, at Meadowlands Fisheries in Coventry, attracted 30 contestants and proved a triumph for the Easy Living Furniture team. They took top team prize with a combined catch of 225lbs; team member Sean Sutton scooped the Best Individual prize with a total personal catch of 120lbs; and John Guest of the Easy Living second team – The Misfits – laid claim to the heaviest fish award with his 13lbs 9oz catch (pictured). “The event went really well, we had a good turnout and raised around £2,000 for the FTBA,” said organiser Andy Corbett, business manager of Prima Foam. Said FTBA chief executive Charles Kerrigan: “Thanks for ensuring the Fishing Day was such a financial success for the FTBA must go to the many companies who supported the event with prizes and sponsorship as well as to Andy for organising it and Meadowlands Fisheries for providing the lake free of charge.” T 020 7256 5954

SALES AGENTS Can we introduce you to some new business?

The Stocklists has been asked to consider running a directory of Agents for the flooring industry to compliment the other information features in our magazine. The Directory would help agents with multiple agencies get better known among retailers in their areas - and also indicate if they were available to take on representation for other manufacturers/suppliers in these territories. It would be published monthly and indexed by region - just like the Wholesalers Guide on page 10 and 11 of this magazine If there is sufficient interest, we’ll run the Agents Directory free of charge for three months and then charge £12.50 per month – payable annually at £150 in advance. Register early to get 3 months free!

The feature will start in July so Agents who register early will get the benefit of 3 months free. We’ll have to start charging from the October issue onwards.
