Associated Weavers.

Always making the right impression. Inspired by the distinctive Maori, Associated Weavers have looked to the heavens for inspiration to keep the

Invictus brand at the forefront of today’s carpet retailing in the UK. The Invictus collection reflects the

names of stars worshipped by our hero-image Maori.

The success of the brand is reflected in the sheer choice of styles on offer. Products like the original Sirius, Orion, Pegasus and Perseus, or Scorpius,

Hercules, Hyperion, Magnificus and Centaurus

launched more recently, all combine to make this collection our most popular ever.

Invictus is indicative of the knack we have at Associated Weavers to identify market trends and, equally importantly, the products that are going to be sought out by your customers. Choosing a carpet can be a difficult decision, but Invictus has strong selling

points: it’s available in 2m, 2.5m, 3m, 4m and 5m widths and, like our iconic Maori, it’ll get to you fast –

within five working days thanks to our superior delivery service; it’s as tough as they come as well,

with a 20-year stain and wear warranty. Stock Invictus

now and you too will have a range that’s bound to make the right impression.

Invictus – the star of the show Invictus is an award-winning brand that was

launched in autumn 2015. From 1190gm Hercules Twist to 2380gm saxony Hyperion,

Invictus features the very latest yarn technology in our unique iVinci SDP StainAway construction.

Pride of place is taken by the innovative Lurex soft-sparkle technology of Centaurus and this

year, for the first time in the range, Magnificus heralds our revolutionary tenth-gauge solution-

dyed fibre. The selection boasts tempting shades

in 2m, 2.5m, 3m, 4m and 5m widths and its 100% bleach-cleanable polypropylene pile guarantees a

sublime combination of superb comfort and

perfect practicality for any room in the home.

Manufactured to heavy wear domestic standards, it’ll outlast any amount of pounding by the

ferocious stamping feet of the haka.

We’re back! Where better to sample the delights of the Invictus range, as well as our other leading brands like iSense,

StainAway and Vivendi, than at the Harrogate Show? This year we have one of the biggest and

best displays ever. If you want to see the way you can make an impression in your store, take a look at our stunning merchandising systems – the best

display units and lecterns, cleverly designed to

occupy a small footprint but showing off beautiful

carpets to their full advantage. Head to Harrogate

from 17-19 September, seek out Stand A1 and enjoy a product range that’s as memorable as our stand number.

Carpet&FlooringReview Leonis gets a bigger bite

Featuring three striking contemporary designs, including two on-trend hexagons, The Chateau Collection is now bringing added power to the bite of Leonis; a range of super-soft and super-practical carpets from Balta Carpets.

Crafted from 100% Leonis polypropylene yarn, this new range is ready to take on life with each of its three designs offering stain-resistance and excellent wear resistance. Thanks to the resilient two-ply yarn, The Chateau Collection is as tough as it is beautiful, the ideal pattern carpet for busy family homes. “With the modern layered hexagons of Petrus and Latour, along with the classic stripe of Margaux, this new collection brings pattern carpet the Leonis stable, making this impressive brand an even more attractive proposition for homeowners,” says Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Group. “The contemporary looks are sure to win fans looking for something a little unusual, while retaining the performance and softness craved in today’s carpets.” Each style is available in four colour combinations, featuring natural tonal contrasts and grey colourways, designed to work with selected Leonis plain styles to give a coordinated look through the home. Unusually for pattern carpet, all three designs are available in four and five-metre widths, helping large rooms to make the most of the visual impact. Featuring on a dedicated lectern that works well alongside existing POS units from Leonis, the new Chateau collection is available to order now and comes backed by 15-year stain and 10-year wear warranties. Making it easier to create a striking design floor, the Expona Commercial range now features more out-of-the-box design floor options which are straightforward to install, including beautiful chevron and woodblock patterns. Larger format planks are also available in an 8” by 60” size that is unique to the LVT market. The Expona Simplay collection of loose lay vinyl tiles and planks now offers 40 authentic wood, stone and textile effects presented in an adhesive-free, ready to lay product designed to reduce installation time. Each plank or tile can be installed, lifted and reinstalled elsewhere without leaving any residue, with the product’s unique, non-skid honeycomb backing layer and thicker 5mm gauge ensuring that the tiles stay in position. The 20 new designs within the collection include on-trend concrete, marble and vintage wood effects alongside three larger format Mono designs. The whole collection now also features bevelled edges. Tom Rollo, Polyflor’s Marketing Manager commented, “We wanted to continue the evolution of our renowned Expona brand with the high-profile relaunches of Expona Commercial and Expona Simplay, adding fresh new and on trend designs that are unique to the market.”. NEWS Underlay upgrade

To give homeowners better recovery and long-term durability from their underlay choice, floorwise has upgraded some of its most popular PU underlays with new and improved higher densities.

The ever-popular Prima (8mm) and Lusso (10mm) have been improved with 18% more foam, upgraded from Medium Density to High Density. High-performance Lift (7mm) and Tread (9mm) are now even more durable thanks to another 18% uplift, going from Super High Density to Ultra High Density. The result is an improved family of products that recover from footfall quicker, and therefore provide a long-lasting underlay solution that will stand the test of time. Demonstrating a commitment to continual product improvement across all lines, these revised specifications show that floorwise is determined to make sure that its underlays continue to deliver customers the very best in performance and value. “With these density upgrades on some of our most popular PU underlays, generally without a price hike, we are making sure that the floorwise name continues to stand for the very best in performance and value.” says Richard Bailey, managing director. The improved density formula has already been introduced to the brand’s Traffic and Maxi high-performance underlays. A 25% increase in density has uprated these styles from High Density to Extra High Density and with it delivering even better value for homeowners that is now gaining the underlays extra traction in the marketplace. Watertight testing

Unilin has developed its own watertightness tests to guarantee that its laminate floors are fully waterproof.

Today, the watertightness of laminate is assessed through a swelling test. Floorboard samples are submerged in water and measured for swelling. The problem with this method? “It only tests the water resistance of the individual boards; not that of the installed floor as a whole”, says Jasper De Jaeger, Technical Services Manager at Unilin. “That’s why we’ve developed our own tests – which are more accurate, stricter and, above all, representative of real-life situations.” The flooring industry has no generally accepted standards for the water resistance testing of floating floors yet. Although the swelling test is commonly used to measure the water resistance of laminate, new standards are coming up for discussion. “The only relevant tests are those performed after installation”, clarifies Jasper. “Only if an installed floor – including joints, bevels, perimeters etc. – proves itself impermeable can we speak of a truly waterproof laminate floor.” “Based on extensive research and experience, we’ve developed three types of analyses to test an installed laminate floor: a mop test, a water cylinder test and a real-life test”, Jasper declares. “That way, we’re testing our products in a relevant, standardized and consistent manner.” Unilin’s real-life trial was developed to test floors in actual situations: a leaking washing machine, a spilled drink, a urinating pet, etc. “Analysis like the standard swelling test aren’t relevant to the end customer because they don’t test installed floors in real-life circumstances”, Jasper points out. “Our real-life test does.” T +32 56 67 52 35 www.unilin.com

NEWS altro excels

award-winning altro XpressLay safety flooring has been used throughout a £25 million secondary ‘super school’ in North Wales. at 4,500m2, it is the biggest ever altro XpressLay installation in the North West.

The new Rhyl High School has been funded by Denbighshire Council and the Welsh Government, to accommodate 1,200 students. As with most new-build school projects, cost and time were major factors in the construction of Rhyl High. Even though Altro flooring had not originally been specified, flooring contractor Linney Cooper recommended switching. James Sullivan, Linney Cooper Contracts Manager, said: “For the Rhyl High project, Altro XpressLay and its properties presented themselves as a better alternative flooring solution to the one specified, for many reasons. The substrate floor at the new school was a power-floated concrete that would take a great deal of preparation with diamond grinding and laying a dpm. But, crucially, Altro XpressLay can be laid without a dpm, because it can be put down straight onto a damp subfloor or a new concrete floor at up to 97% relative humidity. This means quick and easy installation without having to wait for the substrate to dry. “In addition, Altro Xpresslay can be laid without adhesive. There is no waiting for it to ‘cure’, we just lay, weld and walk on it the same day. There are no tacky areas, or having to plan installation in stages because of drying times. “The flooring can be taken up and re-used elsewhere, and if we need to replace areas of damage or wear in the future, we can do so, very easily, with minimal disruption. There are no adhesive odours, either, which is perfect for sites such as schools.” T 01462 489 516 www.altro.co.uk

Sustainability with style

Polyflor has recently published its 12th annual Sustainability Report which outlines the Uk manufacturer’s environmental performance over the past year. The 88-page report gives a detailed account of the sustainability milestones that Polyflor reached in 2016, delves into the company’s green credentials and explains how Polyflor is fully committed to producing environmentally preferable flooring, ensuring sustainability. Key achievements for 2016 include HGVs within the fleet being replaced with modern Euro VI engines resulting in much lower emissions and an increase in backhaul operations, removing in excess of 465 HGV journeys from the road network. Improvements to resource management have been made through initiatives such as more daylight ports being installed to maximise natural lighting and existing lighting being replaced with sensor operated LED lights. Furthermore, water usage fell by 1.4% and total waste tonnage fell by 8%. As a co-founding and funding member of the Recofloor vinyl takeback scheme, Polyflor reports a record 508 tonnes of postconsumer waste vinyl flooring being collected in the past year, with 69 new collectors recruited. Recofloor also won the Let’s Recycle Award for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management. Using the Recofloor model, Polyflor South Africa also launched the first official recycling scheme for vinyl flooring in their country. Proving that materials for vinyl flooring collections are sourced responsibly, Polyflor is the first flooring manufacturer to obtain the BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing standard with a Very Good rating. Polyflor’s products also contain up to 85% sustainable material and up to 40% recycled material. T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com

It is a key highlight and meet-up zone for all Domotex visitors who want to experience life beyond the mass market and sample some of the more out-of-the-ordinary creations and directions being pioneered by the next generation of designers,” commented Susanne Klaproth, the director in charge of Domotex at Deutsche Messe. The ‘Nuthinkers’ showcase is mounted by the students from Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts is called ‘Innovative Flooring’. Meanwhile, the students from the ‘Communication in Space’ master’s program at Mainz University of Applied Sciences’ design school are working on spaces in which communication and information play a special role. For their project, ‘Individual Motion Space’, the students are developing a virtual reality application that enables users to design individualized spaces in real-time using their own body movements and then translate their designs into real, physical spaces using digital production technologies. The project is headed by Professors Klaus Teltenkötter and Bernd Benninghoff. The project uses motion sensors to capture the movement data so that it can be used to design a virtual three-dimensional space that can be implemented in a variety of potential forms. Algorithms then translate this 3D model into a format that can be used for digital manufacturing. www.domotex.de Virtual reality software that uses body movement to create individualized spaces.

With a super-quiet, yet extremely powerful motor and features such as variable suction, free-rolling castors, a long cleaning range and an ergonomic handle, housework is easy. Soft focus on heathers

Hot on the heels of the popular Soft Focus comes Soft Focus Heathers, a new super soft, easy clean floorcovering from Cormar Carpets,. Using the same fine, soft polypropylene Finesse fibre as the original Soft Focus range, the new addition is a 10th gauge, deep pile carpet that is ideal for all areas of the home and comes with a 10 year stain and wear warranty. With a strong palette of contemporary greys and neutrals, there are 12 heather shades to choose from including Lunar Grey and Nocturne. It retails around £24 sq m and comes in both 4m and 5m widths. “Soft Focus has proved popular for us so it made sense to broaden the palette and give consumers the choice of more tonal colours,” said David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets. “There’s an interesting regional balance with plains more popular in the south east but nationally, heathers are very strong for Cormar.”

All Cormar’s wool twist, wool loop and easy clean polypropylene ranges are produced on site at its Lancashire mills and distributed in the UK and Eire via its own delivery fleet. T 01204 881234 30 August 2017

Kenburn Raving about saving

For the fourth year running the kenburn Carpet Crusher will be exhibiting again at this year’s Flooring Show Kenburn’s recycling initiatives have been welcomed by the flooring industry who in particular are extremely keen to divert their recyclable carpet and underlay waste from landfill. The recycling scheme involves using either new or old uplifted carpet and underlay waste as a fuel for ‘waste to energy’ and the fuel provides the power for concrete kilns as a replacement for coal. Not only do these initiatives divert recyclable carpet and underlay waste from landfill, they also at the same time reduce ever increasing skip costs as it costs less to recycle carpet waste than it does to send it to landfill. The Flooring Show not only provides the opportunity to showcase the ‘Carpet Crusher’, it also allows Kenburn to meet with the many flooring companies who recycle their carpet waste using its initiatives and who have great pleasure in telling the company how much money they’re saving! Quick-Step Durable developments

Quick-Step is presenting a series of new innovations in its laminate, LvT and engineered wood products at The Flooring Show this September. In recent times, one of the most significant developments from the manufacturer has been the introduction of water-proof laminate technology, currently available in its Impressive and Majestic collections, and this is set to be introduced to more products at this year’s show. Dubbed HydroSeal, the technology forms a hygroscopic coating on the grooves between planks so that water beads on the surface rather than seeping through to the core. Enhancements to the Quick-Step Hardwood flooring family too will be on show, with a series of exciting design and technical developments revealed to ensure the portfolio continues to deliver both the aesthetic and practical demands of today’s homeowner. The portfolio of LVT products will unveil six new designs in slate and stone effects to the Ambient Click and Ambient Click+ collections. Seeing the current range expanded, these new designs reflect the growing popularity of contemporary mineral looks. The sexiest underlay you will never see Unifloor Fast and versatile

Jumpax fast-track floor prep principle is a popular and successful underlay system. This is because the flooring market is moving more and more towards resilient dry back finished floor coverings such as LvT, PvC and vinyl. Jumpax is a unique and highly versatile underlay, instantly producing a perfect, stable surface for stuck-down floor finishes. As a pre-fabricated, floating double-layered fibreboard system it combines speed and ease of use with excellent smoothing capacity and the ability to overcome many timeconsuming difficulties associated with traditional surface preparation methods. It requires no screeds, glues, nails or other fixings and is ideal for use on both solid and timber floor constructions. There’s no drying or setting time as with screeding systems, no priming, no mixing, no rubbing down and it has no smell. It is not necessary to remove old floorcoverings or surface coatings, which can be overlaid, nor is it necessary to decontaminate concrete in order to achieve a good bond, as the floating floor principle employed does not require any kind of fixing or bonding to the substrate. This also means that future removal of both floorcovering and underlay is quick, clean and easy, with no residues or damage whatsoever to the old floor surface, or previous floor finish. An extensive range covers virtually every kind of floorcovering and substrate situation, including underfloor heating. Each product has been designed to perfectly compliment a specific type of floor finish by providing the ideal blend of support and surface quality for a prolonged life and enhanced appearance. Lano Luxury - from lab to launch

Lano will affirm its position as one of Europe’s most innovative carpet brands with the launch of Cashmere and Cashmere Luxe. These striking new additions successfully blend the stain resistance and low maintenance of polypropylene but in an industry first, will boast the look and feel of the most luxurious nylon velvet styles. “We’re really excited to be bringing these two new collections to The Flooring Show,” says Gary Alp, UK sales manager, Lano Carpets. “Fresh from our development lab, this new fibre really does bridge the gap to the very best solution dyed nylon velvets available, giving the practical advantages of stain-resistance while retaining that silk look that is so desirable today.” Another notable introduction will be the fabulously indulgent Fairfield Heaven, a plush 65oz Saxony style that will sit within a Touchdown Premium portfolio of styles. Previewed at the Buying Groups National Flooring Show with positive feedback, Lano will also launch Venice Tartan. With 1,000,000 points per square metre, each heritage-inspired pattern within the collection is produced with incredible accuracy, resulting in some of the most intricate plaids available today. Crafted from Lanoset polypropylene, Venice Wilton comes with a 15-year residential wear warranty and is promised free from common stains for 10-years. Ulster Carpets In the loop

The Ulster team are looking forward to showcasing some brand new ranges including its new loop offering Habitüs. The four designs, Urban, Rustik, Croft and Strönd are inspired largely by the understated aesthetic found in Danish design and share a warm, tactile feel.. A classic, sophisticated chevron, Urban combines a sharp geometric look with the softness of the wool loops, whilst Rustik is a more striking, linear ‘cable’ design inspired by the ‘Chunky Knit’ weave. By contrast Croft is a berber offering, made up of six shades which have been manufactured using a combination of plain and heathered yarns, creating a natural textured finish and almost ‘artisan’ feel. Strönd on the other hand, can be labelled as an understated yet striking striped design which has a nautical feel to it. Also being shown will be the new Auckland and Queenstown colourways added to the popular Open Spaces collection as well as Ulster’s most recent Axminster range, Watercolours. Previewing exclusively at this year’s show are the new colourways that are being added to Beaumont, Braeburn and Tazmin. Each range will feature three new colourways which all reflect the current trends for subtle grey tones with highlights of colour, adding a fresh update to the ranges. Crown Floors Celebrity and style

This year’s Flooring Show will see a world premiere, as Crown Floors reveals the first glimpse of an exciting new development in ultra-soft yarn, available exclusively to the brand’s growing retail network. This new range of two styles fits seamlessly into this proposition, bringing another option to entice consumers. The new ultra-soft stain-resistant collection will feature alongside the award-winning Deacon Jones collection, one of the industry’s first Hollywood celebrity-endorsed collections, which has also been a big driver for the brand this year. “At Crown Floors we’re always looking for ways to make sure our carpets appeal to as wide an audience as possible,” says Gavin Freebairn, field sales manager, Crown Floors. “Working alongside the recognisable face of Vinnie Jones has helped us to do this, appealing to a new audience and giving the Crown Floors name extra kudos. At the Flooring Show we’ll have the entire Deacon Jones collection on its unique display units, as well as numerous POS options including the impressive wall unit and our versatile ‘family proof ’ tombola.” The brand’s new website (see right) will also be demonstrated at Harrogate. SURVEY

The moth menace Are we doing enough to beat the bugs? The menace of moths keeps flying up the agenda with carpet consumers, and an issue that was once a niche problem in the south of England now seems to be a nationwide nuisance. And yet most of the mainstream manufacturers routinely moth-proof their products. Is moth damage to carpets an increasing complaint from your customers and has it put some people off wool carpets? How much is it moving North? Do you know which manufacturers are moth-proofing their carpets? And is the industry doing enough to promote its control of these pests or are we all too shy to discuss a negative issue with consumers.

The online survey takes less than 3 minutes. It’s anonymous and doesn’t need any form filling. Please help us inform the industry. Visit www.thestocklists.com and click on the survey banner to take part.

These duotone textile patterns have been updated using a contemporary colour palette influenced by the seaside, with soft, ice-cream tones of blue, pink and spearmint, balanced by subtle greys. The pastel shades of the Padstow series give these classic styles a grown-up feel and the remainder of your interior can be kept very simple as the floor provides the impact. Jodie Hatton, Creative Designer for Brintons says, ‘These patterns recur time and again as they offer enduring style and endless versatility. Gingham particularly is a keynote of warmer weather, often returning each season alongside florals as both a wardrobe and interiors staple.’ Brintons’ Padstow carpets can feel completely different depending on which colourway you choose and how you style them. These tailorinspired prints suit all interiors styles from bedrooms, living rooms or hallways to children’s bedrooms. ‘Fusion’ is a unique range from Ulster Carpets, with striking patterns and colourways designed to make an impact. As the name suggests, the inspiration is a fusion of re-discovered classic designs that have a resonance in many different areas of interior design. The chevron ‘Reverb’ has roots in architecture, parquet flooring and embroidery, the dogtooth design ‘Tone’ originates from tweed fabrics, while ‘Sonic’ echoes ikat textiles and slub yarns.

Catherine by adam Carpets

The Fusion designs maintain their familiarity but have been re-visited to add a contemporary feel with blues, greys and neutrals that are perfect for current colouring, while the scale of the bold designs are tempered by the use of texture, accentuating the softness and practicality of the axminster pile. Available in a 4m width, this range is perfect for larger family spaces, reducing the need for seams. Its 80% wool, 20% nylon combination makes it suitable heavy wear within the home or a commercial setting. Adam Carpets are unique in the UK with regard to their overtuft ranges. These are tufted carpets which offer ‘woven’ style designs. The ranges are still made with high quality 80/20 2-ply yarn, but significantly lower manufacturing times means that they sit at a much lower price point than conventional woven products. Overtuft was launched in 2002 with the popular Inspirations range, since then Adam have launched a further six overtuft ranges offering a variety of designs. The more recent has included Catherine Lace, a beautifully tailored trellis. The carpet is manufactured as a plain carpet first, with the pattern added as a secondary process. This gives the carpet different textures where the pattern sits. Catherine Lace is available in 4m and 5m widths. From stylish hard floors to soft wool-rich carpets, each deliver accomplished design, providing the base perfect for consumers to plan their interiors.

COMPANY NEWS kidderminster saddened by decline

For 200 years, Kidderminster has been synonymous with making carpets but the town's heritage has been hammered by a double blow in recent weeks with the announcements that leading manufacturers Brintons and Victoria are to move manufacturing away from the town.

Brintons said in June that axminster weaving would end in Kidderminster after an operational review that could cost the town up to 60 jobs. Now Victoria has announced a re-organisation of its manufacturing operations which may result in a similar loss of employment. Victoria's announcement has an upside for the industry as it reflects the company's successful recent growth and, overall, UK manufacturing for the group will be increased at other sites while the Kidderminster base will remain as head office for Victoria Plc and Victoria Carpets and will be further developed as the Group logistics hub for the Midlands. By mid-2018 the Group will further have a Northern Hub and a Southern Hub, the latter based north of London in the vicinity of the M25. Phil Hartley, Managing Director of Victoria Carpets said, ‘’Clearly the impact on the loyal and in many cases long serving employees effected here is huge, but we are required to take tough decisions from time to time, as well as easy ones and the case for maximizing manufacturing output across fewer sites within the Group is undeniable. We have to continually improve and at the end of this process, the outcome of these changes, in both product and service terms will be beneficial to our business but most importantly to our customers in the years ahead.’’ Both Brintons and Victoria cited the need to increase operational efficiency in a highly competitive market as the driver behind their decisions. The announcements are a blow to the town which became the capital of carpet when Brintons set-up in 1785 and other textile entrepreneurs nurtured many of the technologies that became common across the industry today. In its heyday of the 1950s and 60s, Kidderminster was home to more than 30 carpet manufacturers. The latest news of closures was greeted by dismay locally. The area's MP Mark Garnier commented on Victoria's announcement: "It is a tragedy, not only because it comes hard on the heels of Brinton’s announcement, but it is yet another nail in Kidderminster’s carpet industry’s coffin. This is incredibly sad as it reduces the carpet manufacturing resources in the town to, possibly, just Adam and Brockway. From over 20,000 people in the industry 30 years ago to just a few hundred now is a huge decline."

Other business news

Brintons has been sold to US-based private equity firm for an undisclosed sum after a period of “strong performance” since the company was rescued from administration in 2011 by the Carlyle Group. The Carlyle Group bought Brintons in September 2011 ending eight generations of family ownership at the firm and there has been substantial progress with the business. Its earnings after tax soared 81 per cent to £14.5 million in the 12 months to October 1, 2016. It is forecast to at least match that performance this year. Now Brintons has been sold to Argan Partners LP of New York for an undisclosed sum. Brintons chief executive Duccio Baldi added: "We now look ahead to this exciting new chapter, continuing Brintons’ tradition of high quality manufacturing, and working with Argand to build the brand further. " Carpetright reported a 2.6% fall in UK sales over the year ending 29 April 2017 taking £10m off the bottom line though the company says there is encouragement in current trading. A major programme of refurbishment of UK retail stores is underway and is credited with boosting sales leading to creating some optimism for the future.

Drawing on experience!

Chief executive Wilf Walsh said: “We have made an encouraging start to the new financial year, underpinned by the improving performance of our refurbished UK estate. While a challenging consumer environment and competitive landscape remain headwinds, we are confident the additional potential in our self-help initiatives will support an increase in market share.” Cormar Carpets’ UK sales fell for the first time in seven years with a 2% decline last year, according to the latest company account filing which covers the 12 months ending in September 2016. UK sales were £109.9m, down from £112.2m in 2015. Stated within its report, the company said that it had consolidated its position and improved its profit margin despite the fall in sales.

Underlay join the Foundation

Cloud 9 manufacturer Ball & Young has become the 18th Patron Member of the Carpet Foundation as the industry lines up to support independent retailers. Commenting on her decision, Ann Shaw, B&Y Sales Director, said: “When I heard of the new structure, goals and funding, it was a no-brainer. We want to support the UK carpet industry and independent retailers. To be aligned with most of the leading names in the industry must be a boost for our business.”

It’s the carousel for our new liberty line. If we move things around a bit and open the sky-light, we should just about be able to stand it up!

She added: “We will be giving membership our full support and have already started putting the logo on our marketing materials. We look forward to a mutually beneficial relationship.”

Bob Lawton was Sales Director at Ball & Young before his retirement and has had cartoons published in many newspapers and magazines including CFJ, Private Eye, The Spectator and The New Yorker.

Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

The vibrant and changing world of wood “Having a specialised hard flooring sales force sets us apart as we can offer help and knowledge to retailers, by offering 12 ranges between 14mm-20mm with over 70 products of engineered flooring and a solid range offering five finishes on two widths that will suit almost all customer budgets and requirements.”

kährs Oak – götaland Collection

Increasing diversity can be seen within wood and engineered wood flooring designs, providing consumers with a constantly-extending choice of product to satisfy their interior design aspirations.

The first example of this is the Kährs award-winning range, which includes over 140 wood floor designs, crafted from sustainable timber and featuring a high performance, multi-layered construction. Designs span from traditional one-strip boards in natural tones, to on-trend colour-stained designs with tactile finishing treatments.

New designs for 2017 include the company’s götaland Collection. Launched in celebration of kährs’ 160th anniversary, the new range of oak wood floors combines lively oak with a vintage finish, in colours spanning floury white to chocolate brown and taking inspiration from its Småland Collection, which includes complementary designs in a one-strip format.

Named after the götaland region, the new collection captures the spirit of Southern Sweden. Each design features a dynamic surface treatment that is handscraped, sawn, brushed and bevelled. The lightest and darkest floors are also stained and all designs are finished with several layers of tactile natural oil. Natural Solutions national sales manager Richard Richman says the engineered and solid wood sales for Furlong under his company’s brand have been “very exciting”.

“And we’re also seeing our clients become braver as they use bolder surfaces and shapes. Wooden flooring is the perfect solution to the creation of statement floors and walls...”

keeping up with trends and styles is paramount, he continues, as the wood flooring market over the last two years has seen a real push to design and texture and his company “has not been slow in reacting to this. We have added engineered herringbone planks in colours and a natural Uv oil plus a textured range that incorporates up to date colours and a saw cut finish”.

Further opinion is provided by The Reclaimed Flooring Company founder and creative director Robert Henry: “Colours are either very light or very dark, with nothing in-between. gone are the days of mahogany-rich reds and cherry woods – instead drama at opposite ends of the colour spectrum are the common choices we’re seeing.

“and we’re also seeing our clients become braver as they use bolder surfaces and shapes. Wooden flooring is the perfect solution to the creation of statement floors and walls,” says Mr Henry.

Quick-Step international PR manager Sophie Hautekeete says the constantly changing nature of our world, with technological innovations coming at a swift pace, is spawning growing desire to escape this “frenetic jungle”.

“We want to create a place for ourselves where we can enjoy both simplicity and tranquillity and bringing nature indoors does this brilliantly. Of course, plants, tropical prints and floral fabrics are perfect for adding colour and interest, but using natural surfaces in the home creates a lasting statement of our desire.

“There are few better ways of doing this than with Quick-Step hardwood flooring; authentic and unmistakable it brings nature firmly indoors. With looks from dark and rustic right through to pale and clean, it can be the start of a very special interior scheme that celebrates our return to the more simpler things in life,” she concludes. NEWS Eco experience

Recofloor has launched its annual Summer Promotion giving flooring contractors who recycle their waste vinyl flooring through Altro and Polyflor’s scheme the chance to win an ‘unforgettable experience’ with a Red Letter Days Gift Card..

Every flooring company raising a Recofloor collection throughout August will be entered into a draw with a chance to win one of three £100 Red Letter Days Gift Cards. The prizes will be offered to the first three names chosen at random and the draw is open to new and existing Recofloor members who raise a collection during August (1st – 31st). Recofloor’s Project Officer Joe Gardner comments: “Our popular August promotion again looks set to attract much attention from both existing members and new companies. We look forward to welcoming you; just phone or email us to register.”

Give it some gypsum!

Stopgap 1100 Gypsum, a calcium sulphate based smoothing underlayment, Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive and Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier, from F. Ball and Co. Ltd., manufacturer of flooring adhesives and subfloor preparation products, have been used for the installation of vinyl sheet safety flooring and carpet tiles as part of the refurbishment of Kingussie Courthouse in Scotland.

A & H Floor Covering Specialists, based in Dumfries, were subcontracted to install flooring over an anhydrite subfloor which contained underfloor heating. Before applying Stopgap 1100 Gypsum smoothing underlayment, they primed the subfloor with Stopgap P121 acrylic primer. Stopgap 1100 Gypsum smoothing underlayment was then applied throughout the area. Applying a cement-based smoothing underlayment over an anhydrite subfloor can cause an adverse chemical reaction which can cause the floor to fail. However, Stopgap 1100 is a specially formulated calcium sulphate based smoothing underlayment which offers excellent compatibility with anhydrite screeds. It is self-levelling and can also be used over a wide range of other subfloor types, including Stopgap waterproof surface membranes, sand/cement screeds, concrete, sound asphalt, granolithic, terrazzo, epoxy and polyurethane resins, ceramic and quarry tiles. A & H Floor Covering Specialists then used Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive to install the vinyl sheet flooring, as it is suitable for use over normal underfloor heating systems. Styccobond F46 is a solvent free pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive that dries to a permanent tacky film. It can be used for securing a wide range of PVC sheet and tile floorcoverings and is designed to give strong initial tack and a high bond strength.

Launched in 2009 by leading flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro, more than 3,300 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring has been recycled through Recofloor. This is equivalent to well over one million square metres of flooring and enough to cover 1,333 cricket pitches. Recofloor members can save up to 70% on disposal costs compared to landfill and reduce the environmental impact of waste vinyl flooring material by recycling it. Signing up is easy; to join the scheme, phone or email Recofloor to register your company. You will be entered into the prize draw every time you raise a collection during August. For contractors, the minimum collection requirement is two full bulk bags and for distributors, two full blue bins. All collections must be booked in by 5pm on Thursday 31st August 2017. Collections do not have to be completed in August. Names will be entered into a draw and three winners will be chosen at random on Friday 1st September 2017. The winners (one prize per company) will be notified and details will be provided on the Recofloor website – www.recofloor.org. Visit our website for full terms and conditions. Companies can request a collection by phone: 0161 355 7618, email: info@recofloor.org or fill out an online form on the Recofloor website. Joe adds: “With 700-plus Recofloor collectors and more than 60 drop-off sites across the UK and Ireland, our scheme makes recycling post-installation vinyl flooring offcuts and uplifted vinyl flooring simple and convenient. T 0161 355 7618 www.recofloor.org 2016 winners: l to r – Carl Taylor, Pen Alyn; Steve Llewellyn, 3D Flooring Supplies, Cardiff; Glyn Sparks, 3D Flooring Supplies, Taunton

Styccobond F41 was then used to fit the carpet tiles. Styccobond F41 is a solvent free acrylic polymer emulsion adhesive. It is designed to provide a permanently tacky film which prevents ‘loose-lay’ carpet tiles from moving under normal traffic but enables them to be lifted and replaced easily when required. Roy Henderson, of A&H Floor Covering Specialists, said: “We always use F. Ball products; we’ve never experienced an issue with them and we know that they will help us to successfully install flooring. We are really pleased that our F. Ball representative recommended that we use Stopgap 1100 Gypsum, Styccobond F46 and Styccobond F41 for the refurbishment of Kingussie Courthouse. It provided the perfect solution for the installation of vinyl tiles over an anhydrite subfloor and underfloor heating.” T 01538 361 633 62 August 2017

Stopgap Fill and Prime, a two component, fast drying and flexible cement based primer from F. Ball and Co. Ltd., has been used to create a smooth subfloor surface prior to the installation of floorcoverings, as part of the refurbishment of grade i listed building, The British Library.

Rosemount Flooring UK Ltd., were subcontracted to install 800m2 of flooring in a total refurbishment of the library, which is the second largest library in the world and holds over 150 million items. at this year’s Domotex in Hannover, Simone Post was a worthy winner in the ‘Best Design in Studio artist Rugs’ category of the Carpet Design awards (CDa) for her vlisco Rug. The rug is exceptionally original, using recycled waste materials from the Dutch brand vlisco’s production of batik fabrics, which are folded and cut, using specially developed techniques, to create a circular rug with a contemporary look.

With this project, the young Dutch designer not only highlights the many exciting possibilities for upcycling scrap materials, but also channels an entirely new aesthetic for ‘floor tapestries’. Innovative materials are the key to the success of manufacturers such as the Belgian brand Papilio. Papilio¹s rug Canvas, made from patches of canvas cut from recycled army tents, cross-stitched together with leather thonging, was one of the finalists in the ‘Best Innovation’ category of the Carpet Design Awards in 2016. One of the hallmarks of Papilio¹s collections is the use of recycled materials, such as bicycle inner tubes, car fan belts, cardboard, leather and blankets. Various weaving techniques are employed Innovative woven textiles for unique carpet to create intriguing designs TrompeL'oeil collection rug, structures and textures © Zollanvari International, Zurich. with these materials. This year, Papilio unveiled its on-trend Rope Hope rug, which was designed by Sep Verboom as part of the LIVABLE project, and is made from recycled ropes used by fishermen in the Philippines. Every year in April, the well-known Italian carpet manufacturer Nodus presents a new, visually striking collection of hand-woven and handtufted carpets at the Milan Design Week. Estudio Campana¹s highly original Circus rug for Nodus, made from hemp and rag dolls, impressed the CDA jurors at Domotex back in 2011, when the company was named the winner in the category ‘Best Innovation’. This year¹s Design Week showcased the rugs Bala Perdida and Veneza Carioca by David Elia, the former featuring cartridges and bullet holes as design elements, while the latter incorporates plastic flip-flops. Meanwhile the British designer Faye Toogood also presented her new collection this year under the title ‘Inventory’. Toogood designed this collection for the Italian carpet manufacturer cc-tapis. For Toogood, it’s all about materials, craft skills, and delight in experimentation. As a result, she introduces entirely new design elements into the surface texture of carpet designs such as her Quilt and Rope. It is a combination of the traditional weaver¹s art and cutting-edge design that makes contemporary carpets and rugs such a fascinating medium. In January 2017, at the most recent Domotex in Hannover, the Turkish firm Kirkit exhibited a range of flatweave rugs made from recycled hemp, and featuring bold, eye-catching patterning. They represent a unique blend of traditional and contemporary motifs a popular look, much sought-after in today¹s interior design market. The same applies to Zollanvari¹s Trompe L¹Oeil Roman Empire collection. The design by the Italian label SoFar SoNear won an award in the CDA 2013 ³Best Innovation² category for its successful fusion of Eastern and Western design motifs. The jurors were particularly impressed by the special UV printing technology, which is used to transfer photographic images onto the kilims. www.domotex.de August 2017 65

FEATURE

keeping up with the NiCF

New vice-President, Scott Carter-Dowding (a member for 12 years) reflects on its relevance to today’s trade You’ve heard the name, you’ve seen the logo but what do you really know about the NiCF? Well i would like to take this opportunity to maybe answer a few questions or educate those of you who are not all that sure what we are about. In brief the NICF was set up way back in 1979 coincidently the same year I was celebrating my first birthday and I‘m sorry to say that unfortunately it has lasted longer than my hair. It is currently the only not for profit trade organization within the domestic flooring industry with the sole intention of promoting excellence in the fields of installation and promoting the skills and excellence of the fitter. In fact it was actually set up by a group of installers for installers who felt that our trade is a highly skilled trade and needed to be recognized for what it is. Nowadays it still has the same beliefs, if not stronger, and is professionally run by a president, vice president, treasurer, council members and a secretariat. Over the years our industry has and always will be evolving, whether it be in terms of product developments, manufacturing processes, installation techniques or the actual people on the front line, the installers. The skilled labour in this industry is probably the main area for change as fitters are maybe retiring after years of service and passing on their knowledge or the next generation coming into the trade looking to progress their skills with the aim of making a career for themselves - I for one am thankful for the career path I chose as this industry has been good to me and sad as it may be, on the whole I’ve always enjoyed what I do. The NICF has also had to embrace change as we have to stay up to date with all aspects of our trade which in turn allows us to be the best we can for our members. Our council, which is predominantly made up of practicing floor layers with various years’ experience in the trade, works hard behind the scenes on a voluntary basis; giving up their own free time to help better the member benefits and promote the skills of the floor layer. We also work closely with various manufacturers advising on best practice and installation procedures as well as having representatives who sit on the British Standards Institute (BSi) committee which looks after BS5325. The NICF doesn’t employ anyone and, as a non-profit making organization, any surplus funds are put back into the business and used to promote its members any which way we can.

The advantage of accreditation

So what does the NICF provide the fitter? Well in a word, Accreditation. NICF accreditations are recognized by many if not all manufacturers, companies and bodies within our trade, categories range from trainee fitter right up to Master Fitter which is our highest and most rewarding accolade. The accreditation is proof to any potential customer that you are not only a skilled tradesman but also that you possess the knowledge and expertise to complete the required installation to the highest of standards. As with any membership there is an annual fee which the NICF try to keep to an absolute minimum as much as possible. I, along with many of my colleagues, feel that the various benefits of membership more than make up for the yearly subscription fee; the free listing in the website Members Directory alone has produced business for me that has returned the fee tenfold (the website receives over 30,000 hits a year). Another great benefit provided to members is discounts on FITA (The Flooring Industry Training Association) standard training courses run at their fully equipped training centre in Loughborough, Leicestershire. There is a multitude of courses in various disciplines at very competitive prices running on a regular basis which are aimed at individuals wanting to learn the trade from scratch right up to the seasoned fitters looking to master their skills in theirs or any other field of expertise. Contrary to some beliefs the NICF and FITA are not one and the same, the latter is an independent not for profit company in its own right, co-founded by the CFA and NICF back in 1998 with the aim to provide cost effective training in an industry which before had hardly none. Sponsorship of FITA is open to anyone else wanting to support the industry including manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers etc. who feel that what we do is helping the industry and providing a voice for the installers in our trade, we do have the power to make a difference if that difference is affecting the way our industry is viewed. 66 August 2017

“The Master fitter status has been the most rewarding for me and it is something I am proud to promote through my business. My customers contact me not for the best price, although as any business I try to be competitive, but for the quality and skills I possess.” I myself first joined the NICF as an approved fitter around 12 years ago. I was never one of those people who claimed to be the best thing since sliced bread, in fact I was probably the complete opposite; I think you can learn a lot from people you meet on a day to day basis in this world and I personally made the choice to undergo the assessment process to prove to myself that I could do my job and I won’t lie, it was a daunting task to undertake! At the time I was being assessed by some of the best floor layers in the industry and although I passed my assessment which was the approved category at the time (now re-branded as the ‘fitter’ membership status), I realized how much I had to learn. I am now grateful to say that I class those daunting assessors as friends and it may sound corny but the NICF is like a big family and if ever stuck there is always someone to call on for advice.

Making it as a Master

The Master fitter status has been the most rewarding for me as it has opened various eclectic avenues and is something I am most proud to promote through my business. My customers contact me not for the best price, although as any business I try to be competitive, but for the quality and skills I possess, bearing in mind I have had to work hard to gain these skills and knowledge through countless training courses and research. I would urge anyone to join the NICF if they feel they are a professional installer and highly skilled tradesman in the domestic flooring market as it is the best thing I ever did for my career. I would also advise any and all members to use the accreditation and benefits to their advantage and promote their business in any which way they can, as the saying goes if you’ve got it flaunt it! We at the NICF council will always try to promote our members but as I know myself you have to make it work for you, you are the best person to sell yourself. On the whole the NICF is made up of a group of like minded individuals who only want the best for our trade and would be happy to help out any persons involved within the domestic flooring industry; we understand the problems encountered on site as a majority of us are still actively installing floor coverings on a day to day basis, the only difference is we have made a choice and gone that one step further, making the decision to stand in front of a more experienced and knowledgeable person to prove we are a competent installer and deserve to be accredited for that fact. Flooring factsheet from Interfloor Specialist underlays – wood & laminate flooring interfloor’s British manufactured specialist underlays for wood and laminate flooring offer some of the best noise reducing performance in the industry. The Duralay Timbermate range includes the best-selling sponge rubber brands Timbermate Excel and Silentfloor gold, a premium underlay with an impressive 53 SONE rating, plus the hardwearing Duratex.

Tests show in-room acoustics can worsen if inferior or lightweight underlays are used with hard flooring; putting a lightweight, air filled, cellular product under wood or laminate creates an echo chamber and more noise, whether it’s generated by scraping furniture, heavy footsteps or reverberation. While many products on the market claim to be acoustic underlays, their impact test results just don’t compare to the low noise levels of Timbermate underlays which reduce in-room noise by up to 30 per cent. Independent tests prove the Timbermate products, with their superior weight and density, significantly reduce acoustic noise levels and all have achieved low SONE ratings. Timbermate Excel is a 3.60mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay; while the top end Silentfloor Gold is a 4.20mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay. Both underlays feature Interfloor’s VapourStop membrane, which helps prevent moisture, and branded backing to help differentiate them from inferior copycat products. For installations where moisture is not an issue, Duratex is a heavy-duty 3.60mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay that offers great performance and excellent value. Manufactured at Interfloor’s Haslingden site, the three products in the Timbermate range are rated highly in the LEED programme. The underlays are fully recyclable at the end of their life; contain not less than three percent pre-consumer recycled material and 5 LEED points are available if used within 500 miles from the point of production. They also meet or exceed the industry standard for indoor air quality as established by the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Green Label programme. And for the perfect finishing touch, Interfloor’s accessories include Stikatak edgings to suit all types of floor, including the 9mm Zig Zag which gives a neat transition between laminate/hard flooring and adjacent stretch carpet installation. For further information, please visit www.interfloor.com

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 70

Flooring factsheet Underlay in a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

THE STOCKLISTS August 2017

www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 74

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

www.flooringone.co.uk Mandy Powell Tel: 0121 683 1426 mandy.powell@flooringone.co.uk

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 76

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 77

Flooring factsheet Carpet types Tip Sheared

Random Sheared

Level Loop

Multi-Level Loop

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. it takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. a heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. a wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

THE STOCKLISTS August 2017

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 81
