Share the warmth

We all look forward to nice, warm feelings at Christmas. So here’s some more festive warmth to put on your wish-list this year. iSense Suspense – the waiting is over for one of the warmest carpets around this winter. iSense Surprise – the magic of discovering warmth and softness gift-wrapped with unrivalled resilience. And iSense Serenity – the satisfaction of a beautifully warm saxony at the end of your bed on Christmas morning.

Whether you opt for Suspense, Surprise or Serenity, you know that your customers will enjoy a Christmas with unrivalled market leaders. All Associated Weavers products come with the extra insulating properties of FusionBac – a unique fusing of fleece and woven polypropylene to create a backing with plenty of protection against the wintry weather ahead.

It’s showtime!

January Furniture Show NEC

Come and enjoy all the fun of the fayre, and weave your way across to Stand FS5 in Hall 2 where we guarantee

you’ll get a warm-hearted welcome. Last year there was an enormous interest in Associated Weavers’ products. This year, with even more on offer, we expect many more people to warm to our comprehensive range of superior carpeting solutions.

Envy the warmth

Our hero Maori warrior champions the Invictus range. But, dressed like that, he could do with something warm underfoot this Christmas. That’s why he’s looking enviously at the unique properties of this stunning collection. Sirius and Pegasus have been selling strongly over the last year, but recently launched Hyperion and Hercules are tipped to potentially outstrip that performance through 2017. Hercules was the first Invictus twist and Hyperion is a luxurious super-soft saxony. Both are heather-like bi-colour versions of the iVinci yarn. The unique iVinci SDO StainAway construction, using the very latest yarn technology, produces appealing softness and warmth with deep-down durability. Add the 100% bleach-cleanable polypropylene qualities of Invictus and you have the perfect combination of supreme comfort and practicality for any room of the home.

Domotex Hannover

You’re invited to our show-stopping stand at this massive show. Visit Stand A20 in Hall 6 where there’s bound to be something new to warm the cockles of your heart this January.

Carpet&FlooringReview Good health

Itec Contract Floors has provided over 1,000m2 of commercial vinyl flooring for the Heartlands Education Centre, a crucial facility and the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust’s largest hospital site.

The heart of a bustling, dynamic community of staff, this vast site consists of modern, state-of-the-art buildings that are purpose-built to provide the highest quality patient care and support, as well as a pleasant environment for all guests to visit. This means that any surfaces, including selected floor coverings, are to be of the highest standard, Itec helping to tick all relevant boxes as part of recent renovation work carried out. Hallways and classrooms – key areas within the doctor and nurse training school – were treated to Itec Concept Woods decorative vinyl in the rich oak hue of Santiago 749, installation carried out by Newlays Floors, Birmingham. These floors provide an exceptional level of durability, a large factor in keeping future expenditure capped. Where a substandard flooring option might require re-laying when faced with significant levels of footfall and wheeled traffic, Itec floors come ready-equipped to deal with any challenge thrown their way. Underfoot choice was also to hold easy-clean qualities, with a high percentage of the flooring laid in canteen and entrance areas where dirt and debris can become problematic. David Twist, Director of Heartlands said:“Replacing the floors at Birmingham Heartlands has been an extensive two-year project, but we are delighted with the part Itec Concept Woods has played. The flooring provides durability and simple maintenance, as well as a realistic oak look that enhances the ambiance of our key locations. Caring for Concept Woods saves both time and money when compared to the old, worn carpet that previously occupied the spaces, and it’s testament to Itec that the floors down for two years look as new as those most recently laid.” T 0800 032 3970 www.itecfloors.co.uk

Laying luxury

Quick-Step believes that the basis for any interior scheme is found in its choice of floor, a starting point from which to lift the home to new heights. This season think big by using the extra-long, extra-wide boards found within Quick-Step’s latest collections - Massimo engineered wood and Majestic laminate - to create a luxurious look and feel underfoot.

Massimo and Majestic give the room in question a rugged touch, without sacrificing elegance; the ultimate in ‘luxe’ when used in combination with marble and gold effects. Class and luxury are often considered to be from the past - the association with majestic country manors and stately town houses is readily made - and yet today we are increasingly looking back to the opulence of yesteryear. This phenomenon, prevalent on the catwalk, has now added itself to the interior agenda, allowing our design team a whole new canvas from which to work. Sophie Hautekeete, International PR Manager, Quick-Step, explains how the brand’s newest flooring designs can add to the trend: “The headline news is that dark is back; where 2016 saw a penchant for white and grey oaks, dark has now returned to interiors with richer hues holding sway. Those favouring a minimalist, Scandinavian approach will still be catered to, but Massimo and Majestic also champion more dramatic underfoot choice, ready-made to team with dark blues, Bordeaux red, ochre and even black. “These colourways transport us back to the roaring twenties with a nostalgic nod to ‘Great Gatsby’-style parties, filled with flamboyant extravagance. Worked into a scheme alongside complementing finishes and decorations, dark coloured floors really do help to create an intimate atmosphere, whether oak Massimo or authentic laminate Majestic is selected.” Massimo represents the crème de la crème that is true wood, welcoming an unspoiled piece of nature into the home. Majestic, meanwhile, introduces 100% waterproof and scratch resistant technical qualities, topping off authentic looks with a detailed groove that perfectly matches the surface design. Like Massimo, Majestic makes a statement in the home, enhancing a feel of grandeur through boards that stretch beyond two metres in length. T +44 8448118288

Oval awards

Recofloor is inviting entries for its annual 2017 Awards Event that recognises members’ achievements and dedication to the UK’s vinyl flooring recycling scheme. Entries can be submitted online at www.recofloor.org and winners will be announced at the historic Oval cricket ground on March 29th 2017. Launched seven years ago by leading flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro, more than 3,000 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring have now been recycled through Recofloor back into new flooring and other products.

Alongside the Recofloor Gold, Silver and Bronze awards, there are several award categories which are open for entry submissions. The Contractor of the Year category acknowledges collectors who have demonstrated commitment to the scheme, while Distributor of the Year recognises distributors who play a significant role in the scheme’s success by promoting it to their customers. Two new categories are introduced this year, Project of the Year and Brand Ambassador. Flooring contractors or fitters who regularly drop off clean good quality waste vinyl suitable for recycling at one of over 60 drop-off sites are recognised in the Drop-off Site User of the Year. While those who’ve gone that ‘extra mile’ to actively promote and drive the scheme could be crowned Recofloor Champion. Gold, Silver and Bronze awards are calculated by the tonnage collected in relation to the average number of fitters the company employs. Rudge Brothers & James of Bristol won a Bronze Award in 2015 and two awards in 2016. Director Jim Heal says: “This valuable training has helped our staff to understand what recycling we’ve done and how we can take this forward. It has fired their enthusiasm for the scheme and what we as a company can achieve. More and more flooring companies are requesting training sessions, according to Recofloor’s Project Officer Carla Eslava who says it is helping to steadily build volumes for recycling. Comprehensive training is offered to all members so they can collect and recycle their waste vinyl flooring most effectively. Carla adds: “Each session is designed to suit the needs of those participating, whether as a ‘Toolbox Talk’ or a presentation and all aspects of how the scheme works are covered. Just give our friendly team a call and we’ll do the rest!”

Essential underlay

Through new introductions Essentials 8 and Essentials 10, floorwise is extending its versatile product offering with Medium Density underlays that are produced right here in the UK for quality assurance.

Credentials include excellent warmth and comfort, coupled with outstanding sound absorption, making Essentials suitable for use throughout the home. Choose Essentials 8 (8mm) for good performance at entry-level, or for even better comfort look to Essentials 10 (10mm) and its additional thickness, both options produced using recyclable material for an added sustainable touch. Essentials underlay is produced right here in the UK using combustion modified foam, avoiding certain pitfalls that can plague sub-standard imports from the Far East and beyond. Essentials, like any floorwise product, is fully fit for purpose, easy to cut and consistent in quality of output. Richard Bailey, Managing Director, floorwise, comments: “These floorwise introductions make UK manufactured underlay more accessible than ever before. The end user deserves UK levels of reliability without compromising on the value offered, and Essentials is able to provide just this with two underlays that extend a carpet’s lifespan at a competitive price point. We expect Essentials to perform well in the coming months, particularly when uncertainty surrounding import prices is taken into account.” Essentials underlays, available from distributors across the UK and Ireland, form just part of what is an extensive floorwise portfolio. No matter the requirements of the homeowner, floorwise is able to provide a solution that meets every credential specified; whether bouncebackability, comfort or price point are prioritised, floorwise products will always provide excellent value from entry through to luxury level. NEWS Clean sweep

One pass cleaning — using an upright vacuum cleaner to thoroughly clean a floor using a series of parallel sweeps rather like mowing a lawn – hugely improves productivity. The rotating brush adds mechanical cleaning to suction power, massively improving pick up of fibre, hair and heavy particles. It also grooms carpet pile for a visible enhancement.

SEBO’s professional range of upright vacuum cleaners has been developed to suit all commercial environments where time and cost efficiencies are obviously key. The ability to perform one pass vacuuming is the inherent feature of an upright model as opposed to a cylinder. The essence of vacuuming is the combination of energy and mechanical action. With an upright, the operator need only guide the machine along the floorcovering at a normal pace – once. The machine does the work quickly and so the job is completed efficiently with resultant cost and time savings. SEBO’s impressive upright range includes the BS 36 and BS 46 Comfort, the DART, the Evolution range and UHS polisher. The SEBO DART (pictured) is perfectly suited to a wide variety of floorcoverings and is easy to manoeuvre around stools and tables. With its powerful brush action, it offers a thorough, professional quality one pass pick-up. The SEBO BS 36 and BS 46 Comfort upright vacuum cleaners, each with a 175W brush motor, provide superior performance, outstanding reliability and are easy to maintain. The comfortable handle grip and low handle weight allow for easy, efficient movement. Lastly, the SEBO Evolution establishes benchmarks in durability and usability and is available in three models - 300, 350 and 450 - which offer working widths of 30cm, 36cm and 46cm. T 01494 465 533

Stick with stability

F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has launched a new, improved version of Styccobond F48 High Temperature Grade Vinyl Adhesive which has been rebranded as Styccobond F48 PLUS. This solvent free high temperature grade vinyl adhesive is now fibrereinforced providing increased grab to help to prevent lateral movement of the floorcovering when it is placed into the adhesive, making it easier to work with. Styccobond F48 PLUS Fibre-Reinforced High Temperature Grade vinyl adhesive has a high resistance to both heat and PVC plasticisers, enabling it to prevent any movement caused by temperature fluctuations that cause flooring to expand and contract, leading to tenting and gapping. Styccobond F48 PLUS is therefore suitable for use in conservatories and areas where floor to ceiling windows and normal under-floor heating systems are installed. The adhesive is now faster drying, allowing floorcoverings to be installed as soon as five minutes after the adhesive has been applied. It is protected against bio-degradation and can be applied to structurally sound, smooth, dry subfloors of concrete and sand/cement screed, Stopgap smoothing underlayments, plywood and hardboard. Styccobond F48 PLUS is available in 15 litre buckets and 5 litre buckets from wholesalers nationwide. T 01583 361 633 www.f-ball.co.uk

Conquering the peak

British flooring accessory manufacturer Interfloor is all set for the peak trading period thanks to on-going investment in its warehouse and manufacturing capacity. The company, which has the market leading underlay brands Tredaire and Duralay, not to mention almost 1,000 accessories under the Gripperrods and Stikatak brands, is building on the success of 2015 with continuing improvement in stock availability and deliveries throughout the peak season. Gary Cowley, Interfloor Sales Director, said: “Our continuing strategy is to be the underlay manufacturer of choice for all customers. For this to happen we need to ensure our stock levels are high enough to meet customer demand whatever the time of year.” Interfloor delivers to over 2000 UK outlets every week as well as meeting demand from over 70 countries worldwide from its manufacturing sites in Lancashire and Scotland. In 2016 additional investment has been made to secure another 130,000 sq ft of warehouse space and increased manufacturing capacity to ensure enough stock is available from now until the holidays in December and into 2017. “Interfloor is fully committed to supporting our customers and with this in mind our last order day for delivery before Christmas will be Monday 19 December. Our aim is to ensure customers won't be impeded by supply restrictions or miss out on vital revenue during this particularly busy trading period,” added Gary. T 01706 213131 www.interfloor.com

Vinnie Jones goes soft

Legendary football and movie hard man,Vinnie Jones, is proving he has a softer side with the launch of the Deacon Jones by Crown Floors carpet collection. Partnering with long-time friend and flooring expert to the rich and famous, Danny Deacon, to create the Deacon Jones brand, the pair have hand-picked eight exclusive Crown Floors carpet styles. The Deacon Jones by Crown Floors collection is sure to create a knock-out punch in stores across the country. The range shows Vinnie’s notorious toughness in four X-Tron extra-strong polypropylene carpets, but also reveals his softer side too, with four super-soft polypropylene and polyamide styles. Presented on a striking double-sided book stand featuring the man himself, the Deacon Jones by Crown Floors is as high-impact as some of Vinnie’s notorious tackles. “Not many people know that I’ve been dabbling in property development for over 20 years now and I’ve built a real respect for the carpet that’s tough enough for the task at hand,” says Vinnie. “But I also know that it’s good to show your softer side from time to time and so the Deacon Jones collection brings soft and strong carpets that are great for any home.” With expert knowledge built through decades in the industry, Danny Deacon knew that Crown Floors would be the ideal exclusive carpet supplier. With six months of work behind the scenes, the Deacon Jones by Crown Floors collection is reaching the final development stages. “We’re extremely excited about Deacon Jones by Crown Floors as we are confident that Vinnie’s endorsement will bring extra confidence that this is a collection to provide homes with impressively tough carpet that’s also surprisingly soft, much like the man himself,” reveals Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Group. “The POS is certainly ready to make itself felt, featuring a near life-size Vinnie Jones and the carpets really do speak volumes about the quality of styles from Crown Floors.” Vinnie Jones will launch the Deacon Jones by Crown Floors collection on the Crown Floors stand at the January Furniture Show, NEC, 22-25 January 2017. The new double-sided book stand for the range will be taking centre stage in Hall 2, Stand FS25. T 0800 0773301 www.crownfloors.co.uk

Rolling stock, making history

The first rolls of carpet to fill the new UK warehouse of F&X Carpets took a very special journey, aboard the first train travelling the ‘New Silk Road’, an overland trade corridor linking China and Europe.

As part of a $1 trillion investment by the Chinese government, also including a new maritime route, the New Silk Road rail route is designed to strike up economic partnerships with other countries. F&X Carpets filled the first train to use the route with an extraordinary 42 containers of carpet destined for its European distribution hub in Belgium, before being transported to the UK warehouse. “The New Silk Road will really help to improve our supply chain,” explains Gordon Hugo, managing director, F&X Carpets (UK) Ltd. “Speeding up transport times by 50% in comparison to our regular shipping routes, the railroad will help us to ensure stock levels are consistent and responsive. “Being the first exporter from China to make use of the New Silk Road underlines our commitment to bringing our diverse ranges to the UK and making sure our warehouse is in the position to provide our growing retailer network with great value cut-length carpet styles delivered in as little as 48 hours.” F&X Carpets owner, Wang Yulin, marked the inaugural journey at a formal presentation, where he spoke at length about the company’s commitment to taking full advantage of the New Silk Road as it looks towards growing its business in the European single market and the UK. The train departed fully loaded with carpets destined to bring UK homes great underfoot performance, style and value. T 07976 607657 www.fxcarpets.co.uk

High performance subfloor preparation products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used in the refurbishment of the flooring in the ‘Jupiter’ ward at Chelsea & Westminster hospital in Chelsea.

Flat chat in Hannover

Flatwoven or tapestry-woven carpets and textiles have been made by generations of weavers in all corners of the world. The technique lies at the heart of the history of textile weaving, but kilims and tapestries remain as relevant and important in the world of contemporary design and interiors as they have ever been.

For some people, the mention of a flatwoven rug instantly suggests an Anatolian kilim, for others it is a tightly woven Caucasian sumakh or a double-sided striped jajim, an Iranian eating cloth called a sofreh, a Navajo rug, a French Aubusson carpet or a Moroccan kilim. The visual language of the flatweave are even more diverse than those of pile carpets. To comprehend the relevance of flatwoven rugs in today’s market, you only have to look at some of the previous winners of the Carpet Design Awards and the range of beautiful designs for contemporary flatweaves offered at Domotex and beyond. In some cases a traditional design has been reworked for a modern audience, in some the design is completely contemporary, while in many cases the beauty and simplicity of a traditional design is what actually assures its usability today.

The 1,000m2 ‘Jupiter’ ward, home to the hospital’s adolescent unit, was undergoing a complete refurbishment. After removing the existing linoleum floorcoverings, contractors from Biswell Flooring then removed any loose material from the sand/cement subfloor until only well bonded adhesive residue remained. The subfloor was primed with Stopgap P131 general-purpose primer, prior to the application of Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment. Stopgap P131 is used to promote the adhesion of the underlayment to absorbent and non-absorbent surfaces, and helps to prevent the rapid drying of adhesives and smoothing underlayments. Stopgap 1200 Pro is a fast-setting, minimal preparation two component smoothing underlayment, designed for use over a wide range of subfloor types. It is suitable for use over old adhesive residue, including bitumen and carpet tile tackifiers, without the need for priming, and can also be used in clinical and biologically sensitive areas such as hospitals, making it the obvious choice for this installation. In as little as four hours, Stopgap 1200 Pro is ready to receive floorcoverings, so contractors were able to return a short time later to install a selection of Polyflor floorcoverings in the ward. Using Styccobond F46, a solvent-free pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive, contractors installed Polyflor Mystique flooring in the main area of the ward, and Polyflor Polysafe Standard PUR flooring in the wet rooms. While flatweaves traditionally had a utilitarian purpose such as to decorate the home, to serve as various covers, as mule saddles or to wrap food, today they are a popular floorcovering choice the world over. The method with which they are woven lends itself to creating flat planes of colour and geometric patterns. These traditional tribal designs perfectly suit our contemporary design sensibilities currently focused on the minimalist aesthetic. The pure blocks of colour, simple stripes or checks that flatweaves offer are ideal for modern interior spaces. In addition flatweaves are often offered at lower price points than pile carpets. Flatweaves have been well represented during the eleven years of the Dometex Carpet Design Awards and many have gone on to win a coveted prize, proof that they are an important element within the language of contemporary carpets. For the 2017 edition of the CDA, flatwoven rugs have been granted their own ”best of type” category. It is clear that it will be a popular and highly competitive part of the awards. A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

Another Year of Promoting Wool…Flies By!

It is December. Rather frighteningly as once again, it has arrived too soon! Where did the months go? What made it go so quickly? For all of us, it will have undoubtedly been filled with work projects, lots of routine and squeezed in and around it family and friends. For many of us…the friends element is often entwined with work and in the wool and wool flooring industry, we are fortunate that we have a friendly world to work within..good people, great stories and lots of memories!

As its Christmas - we are taking a tip from Charles Dickens with his infamous tale, ‘A Christmas Carol’ and taking a moment to reflect on some of the wool work done this year! The first Wool Floor Show London was held at the Chelsea Football Club grounds, Stamford Bridge. Here the great names of wool carpet gathered to promote the irrefutable quality of good wool carpets. It was an exhibition to be proud of - familiar names such as Brintons and Ulster Carpets, Kingsmead and Mr Tomkinson rubbed shoulders with Roger Oates and Jacaranda and Crucial Trading. There were stunning design displays to inspire visitors and great Wool Talks to add value to the visitor experience but also to educate all in the world of selling wool carpet. It was like being at the best carpet store in the world! Also we launched the first International Wool Carpet and Rug Awards. It was a real credit to our manufacturers and the talent that they have and this Awards programme put the spotlight on wool carpet in a way that it has not experienced before. Stunning design and texture stories flooded in and we held a glitzy Awards evening to celebrate and make our Awards which were chosen by industry experts, interior publication editors and and design specialists. It proved a fantastic boost to us all!

British Wool at Domotex British Wool will be exhibiting at Domotex, Hanover (14th to 17th January) as part of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce UKTI initiative. British Wool will feature their Platinum Power promotion which exhibits the extreme strength of 100% British Wool. Also featuring on the stand will be Cormar, Cavalier, Brockway and Chromatone. If you are making the trip to this great event please do visit British Wool in Hall 5 at stand B12. We look forwarding to seeing you there!

We launched WoolRetailer.com - the new online community for wool retailers - which provides important education on wool and its performance in carpets and the home. It accredits retailers and provides them with an online gallery page for their store and this is all free of cost. This is searchable by postcode and provides consumers with easy access to buyer ’s guide information and also to each for their local wool retailer by postcode. British Wool launched its Premium Partnership Programme which included the pre-existing Platinum label - for 100% British Wool but also now includes the Gold label - for 70% British Wool within the wool blend. These join the pre-existing Shepherd’s Crook label - the Blue label which reflects 50% British Wool within the blend. British Wool with its natural strength and local origin to the UK provides carpets with extra robust bulk - defying footfall and maintaining good appearance for years. Its been a very busy year - no wonder it flew by! We sincerely hope that some of this activity has touched and benefited your business in some way - it is after all, why we roll out our promotions. All of the above events and activity will be continuing into 2017. March 15th and 16th 2017 - sees the second Wool Floor Show London and we look forward to welcoming many of you there. Until then - we hope you enjoy a great Christmas - no Scrooges in sight we hope - and wish you all good health and good fortune in the New Year!

Anthea Turner with winner Mark Smurthwaite (centre) and Ian James of the NICF

NICF past president Ian James has paid tribute to Mark Smurthwaite on winning the 2016 Carpet Fitter of the Year competition.

“At the start of the final there was only 44 points between the first and sixth place contestants so it was a very close and the lead was constantly changing during the finals which proved a challenge for myself and my fellow judges Jeff Hardy and Richard Renouf,” said Ian. “At the end of the competition it was very clear to see that all six finalists were masters of their craft, all six platforms were of a very high standard and the feedback I received about the event was fantastic.”

The full line-up of finalists

“There could only be one winner and that was Mark Smurthwaite from Cumbria who just happened to be the youngest of our finalists aged only 31,” he said. The Flooring Show at Harrogate was the venue for the much anticipated Carpet Fitter of the Year Grand Final, hosted by the NICF. The finalists were Darren Ash from Worcestershire, Michael Atkinson from Cumbria, Paul Finch from Oxfordshire, Nick Hood from West Midlands, Mark Smurthwaite also from Cumbria and Byron Terrett from mid-Glamorgan. The competition ran over two days, showcasing the craftsmanship and skills of the six finalists and attracted a good crowd; the finalists were required to fit a carpet with border on a dual stick system incorporating a hand sewn bullnose step. The presentation ceremony was on the afternoon of Monday 19 September and drew the biggest crowd over the two days of the event, “I would like to think this was due to my skills and witty banter as compere but I think it may well be due to Anthea Turner assisting me in presenting the winner with his prizes and the finalists with their trophies!” he added. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors (many of whom have renewed for 2017) for their support in enabling the competition to return and contributing to its success; it was noticed and commented on by a great many people that the sponsors were all major players in our industry,” said Ian. Work is already well under way on organising the 2017 competition and so if there are any carpet fitters out there who think they have the knowledge and skills to be the next Carpet Fitter of the Year then please visit the NICF website to pre-register your interest http://www.nicfltd.org.uk/Carpet-Fitter-Competition/. Advantage of excellence

Setting itself apart from other flooring businesses in its area, The Wood Flooring Company Cheshire Ltd, is offering its customers a two-year workmanship warranty through the Quick-Step and Pergo Master Installer accreditation schemes.

Long-time advocate and company owner, David Bacchus, has already been through the refresher course at the Academy for Excellence in Flooring to ensure that he retains his Master Installer badge and certification on wood, laminate and LVT ranges. This certification gives The Wood Flooring Company’s clients peace of mind and sees it gain a real competitive advantage “With four-years as a Master Installer, I’ve seen tangible benefits to my residential business by being affiliated with the Quick-Step brand,” explains David. “Not only have I been able to keep my skills current and in the top echelons of the industry, I’ve also been able to provide my customers with the backing and support of one of the world’s leading flooring brands. Being a Master Installer certainly helps me to attract customers, we are listed on the Quick-Step website as Master Installers and Platinum Retailers too and this has had a positive impact on generating new business,” he says. As with many domestic flooring companies, The Wood Flooring Company Cheshire often sees cross-over into small-scale contract projects and here, sister-brand and commercial specialist Pergo is often called upon. As a Pergo Master Installer too, David is also able to provide a workmanship warranty on all projects of this nature, such as the recently completed refurbishment of the Bramhall branch of Snapes Estate Agents. Installing Pergo luxury vinyl planks, David has provided the branch with the high-quality flooring needed to reflect its status and inspire confidence in potential property sellers and buyers. Following a brief to recommend a floor that gave the branch an up-to-date image while withstanding the usual challenges of a busy retail environment, Optimum Click in Soft Oak Grey provided the ideal solution. “As both Quick-Step and Pergo Master Installers we are able to recommend the correct floor for the task without affecting our workmanship promises,” explains David. “Being able to provide a manufacturerbacked two-year workmanship warranty on commercial installations is something unusual to say the least and undoubtedly had an influence on Snape Estate Agents awarding us the project. “It is for this combination of business-winning confidence, skills improvement and manufacturer support that we would highly recommend the Quick-Step and Pergo Master Installer programmes to any flooring business looking to provide customers with the highest standards in product and service.” www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

READER SURVEY Annual end-of-year performance survey

Business in a Brexit world Business and consumer confidence has had a roller-coaster year with the Brexit threats and opportunities trading punches, with little clarity as to the real impact on the economy. Next year, negotiations will (presumably!) begin and we’ll be treated to a blow by blow account that may increase the uncertainty - or reveal new potential. So while the pound bobs around like a cork in choppy waters and inflation threatens to rise - not to mention Donald Trump re-inventing world trade - we want to know how business has been for you this year and how you feel about the future. Our annual end-of-year survey takes the temperature of the flooring industry. Has consumer confidence bounced back from the post-vote shock? Are likely increases in inflation a good thing to prompt spending? Are suppliers' price increases justified? Is the focus on higher value soft synthetics boosting your business? Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

Exploring the expanding options of laminate “Retailers have enjoyed a rapid expansion in the type and choice of designs introduced to the market. They are now able to capture the increasingly lucrative market for those seeking the latest qualities and designs.”

Majestic from Quick-Step - Desert Oak Dark Brown

Comparing the flooring market of today with just a few years ago, retailers have enjoyed a rapid expansion in the type and choice of designs introduced to the market.

They are now able to capture the increasingly lucrative market for those seeking the latest qualities and designs. This has allowed the most progressive retail operations to continue to meet the needs of their clients while further extending their customer base by attracting new business through offering the most contemporary innovations. Examining the options for laminate flooring, Quick-Step international PR and sponsoring manager Sophie Hautekeete further illustrates the emergence of design-led demand: “Today’s major trend is all about creating a real sense of luxury and regal glamour in the home. Our latest laminate innovation does exactly that, with planks in a grand scale.

"Measuring 200cm long x 24cm wide, our Majestic collection bears truly impressive proportions that leave little doubt that this is a floor that is luxurious and true-to-nature, while also being incredibly practical," she says.

From vintage and rustic looks to trendy and contemporary, Majestic is available in 10 decors, including Desert Oak Brushed in dark brown.

Eight design styles are coherently embodied in the range, which stretches from light and calm to rustic or trendy shabby look. Featuring a level of use of 32 and the TOP Connect connection system, Tritty 90 scores in the highly price-competitive entry-level market segment of 7mm laminate floors, the company states.

Tritty 90 is available both as Silent Pro and as "the quietest laminate floor in the world" with Silent CT and includes the "authentic matt" surface, says Hamberger Flooring, with matching texture and style from the natural oil character and slight gloss effect in the pores.

Xylo Flooring recalls the time when laminate flooring, whether for commercial or domestic use, was seen as the poor relation of hardwood flooring.

"Initially our challenge was to make the laminate look like hardwood, but be ‘cheaper’," the company states. "This has in the past sometimes made laminate look like the cheaper option when buying a floor. "Fortunately this notion has now changed and as a result we sell laminate as a sought after flooring and our Urban range has a highly realistic matt finish. We are confident about the durability of the Urban range as we offer a lifetime warranty for domestic installations and a full, five year warranty for commercial uses. It’s scratch, dent, stain and UV fade resistant which means it stays looking good for longer."

"The warm dark brown promises to be a real eye-catcher, a reaction to Scandinavian design where light shades play a central Supplied as a heavyweight 9mm and using the 2G Valinge Click role. The dark colour brings a touch of class and creates a cosy and system, it is designed to be easy to snap together quickly and easily intimate mood, when combined with other dark shades it really to assist customers in meeting commercial deadlines. does add a touch of regal glamour to the home,” Ms Hautekeete concludes. Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS December 2016

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet from Interfloor The resurgence of rubber underlay Research into consumer purchase behaviour commissioned by Interfloor in October 2015 shows more people than ever before are buying new underlay when they purchase new carpet.

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world.

The research suggests this is in part due to improved understanding of the various products and their benefits gained through Internet research and advice from retailers’ own sales consultants. The in-store consumer experience is key to the rising conversion rates, as it gives retailers an opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of the different products on offer. Consumers want hands-on experience of quality products which offer high levels of comfort and are fit for purpose. They are less concerned about price and more interested in long-term performance and this has led to the resurgence of traditional rubber underlays such as Tredaire Colours Red, Interfloor’s premium sponge rubber underlay. Sponge rubber underlays have been around since the 1950s for very good reasons. In fact, Tredaire launched Willow Green, the UK’s first sponge rubber underlay in 1956. Sponge rubber underlays are extremely comfortable; no other underlay product produces quite the same feel underfoot. They are also exceptionally good at minimising both impact sound and airborne sound between rooms. They are incredibly flexible and cover more applications than any other underlay type, including specialist low tog underlays for underfloor heating and thin and dense underlays for hard flooring. In a Stocklist readers’ survey published in November 2015, 30% said they were selling more underlay and although 60% find it easy to sell underlay, only 50% were using POS to demonstrate its benefits – one of the key reasons customers visit retailers is to feel samples (83%) or walk on the carpet to see how it feels (26%). Interfloor offers POS items including custom-made swatch books, presentation folders and hanging samples with instore foot testers coming soon. All are designed to help retailers sell exactly the right underlay to every customer that comes to their store.

Over 80% of those who didn’t buy new underlay at the time of their carpet purchase believe that they can use their existing underlay (57%), that underlay isn’t necessary (19%) or an expensive add-on (12%) and yet underlay is a great opportunity to improve the way the consumer feels about the total purchase – and hence the retailer.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. www.interfloor.com

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.

www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk

Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

THE STOCKLISTS December 2016

www.numa-online.co.uk

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 54

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS December 2016

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

britishwool.org.uk campaignforwool.org THE STOCKLISTS December 2016

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 61
