Multi-Level Loop

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

THE STOCKLISTS February 2015

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 5

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 10

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS February 2015

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 17

Glossy glamour

Brand new for 2015, the Silver Lining collection from Louis de Poortere brings a new meaning to designs first seen in the hugely successful Fading World collection.

Erasing parts for a more distressed quality, the real jewel in the crown of this collection is the use of a high gloss yarn to bring highlight and definition to carefully selected elements of the design. The result is breathtaking, with a faded elegance that brings glamour to any home. Two designs in Twinkle and Diamonds are available in the Silver Lining collection, each available in colourways designed to create a dramatic centrepiece. Twinkle presents an all-over field of flowers in three dramatic colourways of Bistre Blanket, Obsidian Sky and Emerald Field. Diamonds features a centre focal of three distinct diamond shapes and comes in four colourways of Trinitaro Brown, Mayan Sun, Douglas Green and Slate Quarry. “Silver Lining takes our faded elegance concept to higher levels, bringing a stunning and individual aesthetic that is distinctly Louis de Poortere,” says sales manager, Alan Russell. “As with all our highly successful rug collections the new design is available in a range of standard sizes and woven on jacquard Wilton looms using the finest raw materials – a reassurance of quality” For 2015, the Silver Lining collection is joined by the also new Bo-Bohemian collection and introductions to its established Vintage patchwork range, underlining Louis de Poortere as one of the most creative and imaginative rug producers available in the UK. Classic retro star goes retail

The specialist company that carpets the likes of Downton Abbey and the throne room of Buckingham Palace is now offering their unique blend of retro design and contemporary colours in their first retail range.

Kidderminster-based carpet manufacturer Grosvenor Wilton, one of the UK’s finest and oldest carpet manufacturers, has launched the British-made Diversity Collection, based on classic designs and modern colours. It will retail from £79 per linear metre and will be sold through several channels including www.diversitycollection.co.uk and via social media. The 12 launch designs are united by the idea of ‘a fusion of heritage and fresh new design’. The new collection is inspired by the company’s huge archive of classic 1950s and 1960s carpet designs – with the addition of contemporary colours. Benjamin Grosvenor started carpet making in 1790. Since then, the business that has evolved into Grosvenor Wilton has specialised in the most discerning requirements for design and durability. Grosvenor Wilton is traditionally associated with high-end bespoke carpet for residential and historic houses, film sets and museums. The Worcestershire company’s portfolio includes many high profile commissions: carpeting for Buckingham Palace’s throne room; the set of ITV’s Downton Abbey; and Stephen Spielberg’s blockbuster, Lincoln. Now, for the first time, the quality and design flair that royalty and Hollywood stars walk on is available as a retail product. As well as demonstrating over 200 years of carpet making expertise, the new collection is exceptionally versatile. Applications include wall-to-wall fitting, runners or being made up into edged rugs. Grosvenor Wilton’s managing director, Malcolm Foley, said: "Our new Diversity Collection unlocks the huge potential of the luxury retail carpet market. With over 200 years’ expertise distilled into the new range, discerning homeowners can combine unique style with the quality and pedigree that delights the most demanding carpet buyers. Were he still around, I’m sure Benjamin Grosvenor would be amazed by our novel approach to carpet retailing using technology and media.” T 01242 220233 www.diversitycollection.co.uk

Consolidation continues as flooring business goes for growth... Victoria adds Whitestone

The ambitions of Victoria plc to be a dominant player in UK flooring accelerated last month with the acqusition of the Whitestone Weavers group for a total of almost £14m.

The deal follows the group’s £12m acquisition of Abingdon Flooring in October last year and its £16m purchase of Westex Carpets at the end of 2013. The Whitestone deal will also brings brands including Gaskell Mackay, Thomas Witter and Carpet Line under the Victoria umbrella. The Plc says these brands and the senior management team will retain their independence while benefitting from the synergies of an enlarged group which will now be turning over more than £200m annually. Geoff Wilding, Executive Chairman of Victoria, commented: “We are delighted Victoria has been able to acquire the Whitestone group. It is extremely well regarded within the industry and there are significant opportunities for operational synergies, which will improve the service to our customers and enhance the returns to shareholders. “Overall, when added to our existing operations, the three acquisitions have together substantially increased the scale, breadth and reach of Victoria’s offering. Steve Byrne, Managing Director of Whitestone, said: “There are many synergies between the newly enlarged groups, not just in terms of logistics, but also in the wealth of experience and management talent. We are confident these synergies will enable the group over the coming months to increase the returns of all operations with improved efficiency and extra buying power. The result will be enhanced service to our customers.” The deal gives Whitestone an initial cash payment of £5.7 million, with further deferred amounts totalling £8 million payable through to 2018. Victoria has also agreed a deal to allow Whitestone management to reinvest £0.9 million to subscribe to new shares in Victoria.

Mohawk purchases IVC Leading European LVT and laminates manufacturer IVC is being acquired by US flooring giant Mohawk Industries for around $1.2 billion. Belgium based IVC is familiar to UK flooring buyers through the Leoline, Avenue and Moduleo LVT brands, Itec contract flooring and the leading laminates business Balterio. Mohawk is a major world player including Unilin, Pergo and Quick-Step in its portfolio but sees itslef as under-represented in the fast growing LVT sector, a flooring type that saw 18% growth globally over the last year. “This cooperation will catapult Mohawk into market leadership positions in Europe, USA and Russia in LVT and vinyl sheet and will expand its laminate flooring capabilities in Europe,” said Mohawk CEO Jeffrey S. Lorberbaum. “In Europe, our product offerings will satisfy all consumer preferences positioning us well as the economic recovery gains traction. The IVC acquisition strengthens Mohawk's position as a leading global flooring manufacturer and provides a platform for significant future growth.” IVC was founded in Belgium in 1997 by Filip Balcaen, who is currently IVC's chairman and primary shareholder, and it has three state-of-the-art production units in Belgium, Luxembourg and USA. It is currently building the world’s largest LVT plant in the USA. Annual sales amount to $700m. Mohawk is ambitious for growth in Europe. The company estimates LVT currently has 5% of the market with sales expected to increase 15% annually in the sector until the end of the decade and IVC is already the fastest growing vinyl company in Europe. The deal has been agreed in principle and is expected to go through in the second quarter of this year.

Marketing insights Tartan and Plaids • Clanny carpet leads pattern styles Tartans and plaids have always been a decorating staple but in recent years we have seen an increase in popularity. They have evolved far beyond the preserve of Scottish baronial castles into an accessible and versatile design statement. We contacted some of the UK’s leading carpet manufacturers to get their take on today’s tartans. Town or country, period or modern, Brintons tartans look stunning anywhere. The Abbeyglen collection celebrates distinctive Irish design in a sumptuous handcrafted texture and its warm colour palette gives these carpets a rich, natural and

homely quality. The Abbotsford series comes in a wider selection of shades from neutrals through to the classic red, green and blue Maccines design. Woven axminsters in 4m width and an 80% wool/20% nylon blend, Abbeyglen and Abbotsford are exceptionally hard-wearing. They make the perfect recommendation for any room. 44 February 2015

Influenced by the very latest fashions, the stunning Marquette Plaid by Adam Carpets has been created using a contemporary diagonal design rather than the traditional straight lines. It is available in 10 varied colours, including both soft, natural shades and bold vibrant colours. Manufactured using the optimum blend of 80% British wool and 20% nylon, this 2-ply tufted carpet will continue to perform and look beautiful for years to come. Whether it is a traditional Scottish tartan like the ‘Glenmoy’ range or a fashionable update of the classic design such as ‘Braeburn’, Ulster Carpets’ designs instantly add warmth and character. Many consumers are fearful of using the design on such a large area as the floor; however the trick is to keep the rest of the interior scheme neutral and not to introduce too many patterns or colours which will fight with the plaid design. Should you want to make a statement, the vibrant ‘Hamilton’ range offers style in abundance while the neutral tones and subtle highlights of the Country House Beaumont Collection create a timeless, elegant interior. Gary Bridge, Design Director at Axminster Carpets explains - “Plaid is extremely versatile, it brings a timeless appeal to interiors and is a great way to include pattern on the floor. We are definitely seeing resurgence in tartan and plaids this season straight from the catwalk.”

Laying on the luxury

High performance Styccobond B95 flexible wood flooring adhesive from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has been used in the refurbishment of a multimillion apartment in the prestigious One Hyde Park, a luxury residential complex in Knightsbridge, London.

Flooring contractors, Floors of Distinction, based in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, were contracted by The MCT Group to install bespoke Jatoba wood floorcoverings during refurbishment of the apartment. The engineered hardwood flooring was adhered to the subfloor using F. Ball's Styccobond B95, a flexible, moisture-curing adhesive, designed to accommodate the natural expansion and shrinkage inherent in wooden floorcoverings. Quick setting Styccobond B95 also offers a high bond strength and is suitable for use over underfloor heating. Moisture measurements tests were not necessary, because the subfloor comprised a newly installed system of raised access anhydrite Knauf GIFAfloor panels. Martin Wright, Contracts Director of Floors of Distinction, said: "We use F. Ball adhesives because of the excellent range that they offer, suitable for every eventuality. We also receive great technical backup from F. Ball, giving us the confidence to specify their products for installations like One Hyde Park, where we have to guarantee the highest quality results." ACG states its primary aim is to enhance the profitability of members, working as a non profit making organisation with a non interference policy, emphasising its integrity and self funding, which has gained respect from industry suppliers. Members are encouraged to focus on suppliers that support the group and it guarantees that this will result in the making of significant savings. ACG reports that it negotiates the best discounted prices, along with exclusively negotiated supplier rebates paid directly to members, complimented with a number of promotions presented at various times.

close working partnerships enjoyed with leading manufacturers and suppliers has made these improvements possible year after year. Bond Retail Marketing offers various levels of support to independent retailers that do not compete geographically with each other. This ranges from a comprehensive 24/7 management plan, dealing with on site department design, ranging, pricing and marketing strategies through to support for the independent professional who appreciates a system that deals with the “nitty gritty” of keeping up to date with product and pricing, leaving more time to focus on sales activities.

ACG states that it has created professional and exclusive own label branding, backed by class leading point of sale at significantly subsidised prices. Membership costs have been kept to £825 per annum so that ACG members see a healthy return on their investment. Among numerous advantages provided by SMG is the promise that members will retain complete control over their business whilst benefiting from the various opportunities. Emphasising it is not just a buying group, BRM clients do benefit from keen prices and turnover rebates. Exclusive ranges and self branding to individual stores have been well received, further supported by its www.beautifulflooring.co.uk website. Managing director Paul Phillips says: "BRM works with suppliers developing product and marketing opportunities tailor made for our retailers giving them an edge in an ever challenging retail market." Further to this, BRM is the only buying group to deal with Riviera Home UK, which is working with consultant Alan Bullock, former Victoria Carpet CEO, to bring eight ranges of unique, high-end broadloom carpet to the UK and other international markets. Mr Bullock has used his 40 years of experience to create a marketing strategy which sees it dealing only with carefully targeted authorised dealers, offering geographic exclusivity and realistic margins, and is seeking more independent retailer clients.

As no two independent retailer outlets are the same, with different marketplaces, ideas and goals, Metro states that it is now able to visit retailers to discuss, design, print, manufacture and install bespoke indoor and outdoor marketing material using its own fully equipped vehicle which has computers, printers and finishing equipment. The service creates labelling, posters, POS, banners and even signage. “This innovative idea is completely unique to Metro who offer retailers the benefit of over 25 years worth of flooring marketing experience, on-site, combined with the practical ability to manufacture and install,” the group states.

Metro Group’s Carpet1st branding

"We have a very strict policy of policing the brand whereby we will not sell to wholesalers, installers, internet sellers, the insurance market or anyone who is not an appointed and authorised Riviera Home dealer. Neither will we sell to the big shed operators or other manufacturers," says Mr Bullock. A small licensing fee is charged for this exclusivity, which also includes attractive point of sale display unitary and other selling aids.

Its ‘not for profit’ status means all savings are passed onto members, who also benefit from own labelling, a wide choice of display units and 100 ranges renamed at colour level. The upmarket Elizabeth Grieves and budget Nice Price labels cover price points from £4.99 to £100 per square metre across all product types in wool and manmade fibres. Additionally a package of UK wool twists manufactured exclusively for the group offers further margin opportunities.

Flooring One controller Glenn Harding says the group recognises that independents have different flooring needs and its objective is to offer “a compendium of services”. A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

“In today’s fickle world, we should not short change that valuable face-to-face relationship, carpet is one of the few major purchases that people continue to step away from the sofa for”

Selling Carpet in a Modern World

Times are changing - that is what the New Year is all about but as we know, times have been changing for a while in carpets. Slowly of course - that is the nature of the industry but it is quite obvious to those of us who talk to editors and designers and retailers and manufacturers, that consumers are becoming more specific about the products they choose. Personalization or identity consumerism is perhaps a natural off-shoot of the influence of the internet and social media - endless product choice and endless ways of acquiring product. This puts people in the unique position of sourcing exactly what they want - rather than merely what is on their local High Street. In ten years time the ‘traditional’ consumer will be an online consumer. Carpet of course still tends to buck the trend and be bought in store where we, in the textile industry feel good advice still holds sway. Despite this fantastic somewhat old fashioned trend for buying faceto-face, the sometimes staid, reliable reputation of wool has never been more under threat from what some may view as better value, aesthetically comparable fibres. However, part of the identity criteria that is creeping out of all this online choice is relatively basic - consumers still want good quality and quality that lasts. Good appearance, wearability, cleanability, comfort, good design, colour authenticity - all of this can be considered estimations of quality. People buying online often receive goods to find that their expectations are not qualified in the flesh. Shade not as expected, fabric not suitable, poor manufacturing, unsuitable for use - often are tick boxes on the returns sheet. Modern consumers love free returns not least because they can exercise their right to say - not good enough. In the carpet sector - this is not our world - yet. Because at point of sale we still have a relatively unthreatened comfort zone. We are in the comparably unique position of mitigating against the unsatisfied consumer in advance by putting quality benefits alongside price point advantages. So that the consumer is aware of all assets - pros and cons and can evaluate the purchase, have it installed and then all is well, hopefully. Replicating wool is an easy process today but like cheap make-up the results are sometimes very short lived. All female consumers understand that analogy. In today’s fickle world, we should not short change that valuable face-to-face relationship, carpet is one of the few major purchases that people continue to step away from the sofa for - let us honour that and be sure they fully understand the performance and the price. That simply involves explaining why something is a little more expensive. And whatever your choice of the multiple benefits of wool may be while talking to your customer - and there are many - perhaps the single differential against ‘imitation wool carpets’ is that they simply lack lasting good appearance when compared to real wool. For today’s savvy consumer that usually ranks a ‘not good enough’. Real wool is strong and it looks better for longer...that’s why manufacturers choose it.

DOMOTEX Hannover 2015 •

Europe looks to UK for growth Increased competition and innovation favours British retailers See pages 52 to 56 for Part 1 of our review of the innovations at Domotex. Much more next month!

Domotex in Hannover, the world’s biggest flooring fair, provides an annual opportunity to look back at the UK market from across the channel and from a different perspective. So while a subdued start to 2015 in some sectors in the UK means that our flooring industry may not feel like one of the hotspots of European trade right now, a flat-lining Continental economy means that European manufacturers are turning envious eyes on the UK as a rare oasis of growth. This could be good news for UK retailers as suppliers try ever harder to capture a little more of our valuable market share here with new ideas and attractive pricing. The following pages (and some detailed Domotex reports to come in our March issue) capture many of the most interesting initiatives but here’s our synopsis of some of the current trends. Soft is established as a super seller in carpets with key manufacturers investing heavily in the trend and Associated Weavers, whose iSense fibre took the market by storm last summer, setting the pace again this year. Fresh and light tones seek to lift the slightly gloomy European sentiment so whites and white-washed, very pale pastels and the ‘Nordic’ bleached-out look are to be seen across all types of flooring.

“This year’s Domotex got international trading off to a splendid start, and has generated fresh momentum for the carpets and floor coverings industry”

Stripes still dominate the market for patterns but saturation in the sector means the smartest manufacturers have moved on and subtle patterns, texture patterns and clever yarn effects are now high on the product development list. ‘Vintage’ designs also continue to do well and are showing across all flooring types – even carpet tiles! Wool is emerging from its self-imposed exile more and more with a noticeable increase in product development including innovative yarns and textures – and some decent quality new 50/50 blends at a competitive price. Natural tones apparently provide the comfort we are all looking for and undyed, neutral tones are in abundance. The ‘wood explosion’ is part of this trend but the growing propensity of carpet printers to mimic wood effects in textile is a dubious by-product! Concrete is the new grey. The concrete tones and textures now on offer in LVT and laminate tiles look almost industrial. Maybe we’re reaching a point where consumers will strip away the floorcovering, underlay and insulation to reveal their home’s actual construction material beneath! Grass is growing. An inevitably punny headline but the UK is Europe’s biggest growth market for grass by far and the margins are exceptional. While the big players chase contract work, there are opportunities for retailers to add a sales line to their residential offer.

Domotex delivers 40,000 flock to Hannover

Domotex reinforced its credentials as the world’s top flooring event with 40,000 visitors over four days in January. Overseas visitors were up 12% though overall attendance figures were flat and the number of exhibitors fell slightly, including some notable British absences this year. “Sentiment may be a little subdued in Europe right now but the inspiration and excitment generated by over a thousand exhibitors at Domotex is genuinely uplifting,” says David Spragg of The Stocklists. “We always say that everyone whose business is flooring should visit the Hannover show at least once to re-charge their enthusiasm for the industry. You won’t be disappointed. Book next year’s flight now!” British visitors form the third biggest contingent of overseas attendees (after Turkey and India) and many stayed two or three days to explore the 1,323 exhibitors from over 60 countries that fill 12 halls in Hannover. The organiser’s emphasis on ‘innovation’ means that not only are the latest launches on offer, but designers and product developers are encouraged to reveal what’s next in terms of style, trends, new materials and technology. “This year’s Domotex got international trading off to a splendid start, and has generated fresh momentum for the carpets and floor coverings industry,” said Dr. Jochen Köckler of Domotex. The 2015 event runs from January 16 - 19.

Diversity in demand Edel Telenzo Edel Telenzo know how to make an entrance and their stunning Trail concept of multi-coloured polyamide carpet strips linked by leather and felt inserts was a fabulous feature of their stand in Hannover.

But it is the company’s smart new residential range Diversity that looks set to get all the attention in the UK this year. This 100% wool carpet has a woven look in a two-colour design that meets the current demand for sophisticated, subtle pattern. Six on-trend colours are ready for the launch collection in April and expectations are high that the range will become an industry best-seller to follow the company’s huge success with the Tube collection, from which these tarns are drawn. A Diversity rug is also available with dramatic ‘retro’ tassels (see inset, right). Edel Telenzo also made it into the prestigious innovations@Domotex selection with their innovative Majestic range using recycled polyester (PET) not only for the carpet fibre but for the primary and secondary backings also. Spending on blending Cormar Carpets

Cormar came up with a clever new concept at Domotex which was something of a surprise – and a very pleasant one judging by retailer reaction. As part of the Wools of New Zealand stand, Cormar revealed an unusual new wool loop, blended with 50% wool and 50% polyester to create a smart carpet with an excellent handle. Bouclé Neutrals will be launched in February in six colours covering the on-trend beige and grey natural tones with the clarity of colour that New Zealand wool is famous for. There are two designs plus a range of six, subtle coordinating stripes. “This is a new quality for us and we have a really attractive product here at an affordable price for which we have had a fantastic reaction here at the show,” said Cormar’s David Judge. DOMOTEX 2015 Unflappable foam underlay Ball & Young

Following the success of Connoiseur and last year’s sparkling Caviar & Champagne ranges, Ball and Young have decided to add a little frivolity to their posh underlay party with the launch of Charleston.

Charleston has the same specification as the popular Cloud 9 Connoiseur but offers the product in 9 and 11mm depths. But with consumers, it’s the printed white backing with strong Charleston imagery of Twenties flappers and colourful rose designs that make it so distinctive. “While we have fun working on these branding designs, we know it really works for the retailer to give their sales that extra edge,” says Ann Shaw. “It doesn’t matter that the carpet is going to cover it up, first impressions count with consumers and the retailer can use the design to interest the buyer in the performance of the product.” T 01536 200502 www.underlay.com

The shapes of things to come Vorwerk

Vorwerk always add a little intrigue to their innovation and the company’s strong design lead generates concepts that are challenging and exciting. Working with leading international designer, Werner Aisslinger,Vorwerk has Elementary Shapes - a range of innovation freeform carpet tiles. The combination of muted and striking colours with organic and geometric shapes are available as stock shapes or as a modular construction kit for designers and consumers to make their own shapes, with different structures joined together by felt insets. The brochure even allows customers to press out shaped elements and stick them together on the order form to make their personalised runner! “It is a very unique idea,” says Vorwerk’s Ian Hammond. “We need retailers who can work with their customers to explore the possibilities – especially those retailers who have a strong interior design emphasis as part of their business.” T 020 7096 5090 www.vorwerk-carpets.com

Reflected glory TiscaTiara

Top quality Swiss manufacturer Tisca Tiara are celebrating their 75th anniversary by showing how innovative the company is after all these years. The stand floor at Domotex was adorned with Tisca Scalino, a highly unusual and effective carpet that seamlessly integrates different weave textures within the design pattern elements. “This is very challenging for the weaving technologists but the result is a striking appearance with a three-dimensional effect created by different light reflections from the various weave structures,” said Jack Thomson of Tisca Tiara UK. Tisca Scalino, which was shortlisted as a finalist in the prestigious Domotex design awards, offers six styles covering geometric, organic and circular designs with 36 colour options. Colour Carousel Condor

Carousel sells! Condor’s rainbow range launched seven years ago has proved popular with retailers. “It’s a one-stop shop for colour,” says Condor’s Paul Harris. “We’re re-launching it this year with another six colours to take the total range to 35. When consumers are looking for colour, retailers can roll this out with confidence.” Pictured here with Condor’s Gerlinka Schuuman, the two-ply twist pile polypropylene carpet carries a 7-year wear warranty and a rating that covers use throughout the house. Condor showed several new ranges at Domotex that are set to be strong sellers in the UK market with a set of tenth-gauge PP carpets with excellent finish. Prestige is a smart, well contructed saxony in 15 colours including the latest pastels and greys while Forest uses a subtley lustred yarn to fashionable effect. New Lugano is a solid carpet with a slightly heathered effect in 13 stronger colours. The new 50/50 wool loop Shetland Stripe in nine modern options sits alongside Shetland plains in six colours. “This stripe got a good reaction at the show for the style and handle of the carpet,” said Paul. Smart success Cavalier

Cavalier Carpets innovative Gemini range featured on the stand floor at Domotex and was shortlisted at the show’s showcase of carpet innovation for it’s clever synthesis of velvet and twist to create a sophisticated pattern.

For mainstream carpet retailing, the company launched Pennine Heathers. “This is a safe best seller with all the right colours in an affordable quality wool product,” said Cavalier’s Hans Lowe. This 50oz 80/20 has 15 fashionable colours and is available, in 4 and 5m, at the end of March. As part of the Wools of New Zealand stand, Cavalier also featured Envy, their highly desirable luxury velvet that has been a real success for the company since its launch 18 months ago. The 65oz tenth-gauge uses New Zealand wool to deliver ten calm, clean colours. The exclusive product is offered through a limited number of selected retailers. Tracking the trends Asiatic Carpets

Asiatic Carpets made a welcome return to Domotex with a stunning stand that showed what they have been up to while they’ve been away. New ranges of super sophisticated rugs in up to-the-moment designs and colours show why Asiatic is held in high esteem by its customers for tracking the trends that sell. It’s difficult to call the highlights amongst the 240 new rugs that Asiatic rolled out for Domotex but the Katherine Carnaby range Chrome Stripe and Darcy options are the sort of designs that customers want without asking the price! Another eye-catcher is the latest Chobi range of classic oriental design wool rugs. These are actually machine made but from hand spun yarns and hand washed so that only the price belies the fact the rug is not fully hand knotted. But apart from the authentic feel, the soft faded pastel colour make these highly desirable. T 020 8800 2000 www.asiatic.co.uk from The Stocklists

F Ball’s new Fast-Track Flooring Solutions is one of those ideas whose time is right and the company have been getting a lot of attention for the concept, including a place in the sought-after innovation@Domotex showcase. “We have refined the technology to be able to offer the fastest system in the world by taking the delays out of installation,”says F Ball’s Richard Harris. “This can make all the difference in minimising site time, reduced site re-visits and getting the job done on time.” The system includes the Stopgap F78 rapid drying waterproof surface membrane, Stopgap Fast-Track 30 and Stopgap 1200, rapid set and rapid dry smoothing underlayments and the new Styccobond F5 fast-track vinyl floorcovering adhesive. Marketing the unmissable Carpenter

Carpenter’s confidence in their brand shouts out from the company’s brilliant new graphics that are seen across the business in product merchandising and most recently in the livery of their delivery fleet.

To accelerate the appeal of this major UK underlay manufacturer, the company took an even larger stand in Hannover with full height imagery from their colourful design concepts. “There is a real feeling of confidence in the business right now after a strong year of trading and great product feedback from our customers,” says Helen Rowberry. “So we have something to shout about and we want to be unmissable – the vibrant, modern colours of Carpenter seem to achieve that now and we get a lot of high quality interest from the show visitors.” T 01457 861141 www.carpenter.ltd.uk

Flatweave feedback McThree

McThree came to Domotex with samples of a unique product idea just to gather feedback. By the close of day one, they had to develop their launch plans – such was the interest in their new Rainbow rug range. Rainbow exposes most of its natural flatweave sisal base and creates interest with embroidery like designs woven in sparingly using a yarn with 12 embedded colours. The seven trial designs at the show include floral, scroll and geometric motifs but now the studio will be busy extending the offer with a full run of options.“We have had such an enthisiastic response to this range that we feel sure it is going to be a winner,” said sales manager Peter Dewaegheneire. Peter also reported that the Royal Collection we featured in our Domotex report last year has turned into a serious success for McThree and this year a new colour bank has been added in increase the appeal including some vivid ‘nomadic’ colours. A crush on carpets

Carpet Craft Flooring in Redcar recently took delivery of a ‘Carpet Crusher’ from Kenburn Waste Management in order to compact their waste carpet for recycling and reduce skip costs.

Carpet Craft Flooring’s Managing Director Mark Lilleker commented: “We visited the Flooring Show at Harrogate in September and on visiting the Kenburn stand we were intrigued by a large yellow carpet crushing machine.” “It quickly became apparent that this machine would be absolutely ideal for reducing our skip costs which have risen dramatically over the past few years. Kenburn informed us that with 30 tonnes of compaction force the carpet crusher would compact our carpet waste on a 4:1 compaction ratio and we were delighted to discover their claims were 100% accurate. By using the carpet crusher all our waste polypropylene off cuts are recycled into equestrian flooring and all our old carpet waste mixed together with old underlay is converted into refuse derived fuel (RDF) and used to power concrete kilns.” He added: “As part of our commitment to the environment and our terms within the MOD contract we hold, we’re now operating on a ‘zero to landfill’ policy which not only prevents hundreds of tonnes of waste carpet and underlay going to landfill every year it also at the same time saves us thousands of pounds a year in skip costs so it’s a ‘win-win’ scenario.’ As members of Carpet Recycling UK, Kenburn visit flooring contractors and retailers throughout the UK offering free impartial advice on how best to recycle waste carpet. They also act as the link between the flooring companies and recyclers to ensure the most cost effective way to recycle your waste carpet and underlay. With EU legislation being introduced to ban any carpet waste from going to landfill now may be the ideal time to arrange a brief waste survey. T 01727 844988 www.kenburn.co.uk from The Stocklists

Top tartan shows skill

Stevens & Graham, the world's biggest tartan carpet designer and manufacturer, has brought a splash of contemporary colour to two of Scotland's best-loved hotels as part of a series of new contract wins. The Glasgow-based company, which supplies carpets to international names such as Brooks Brothers, Tommy Hilfiger and House of Fraser, was called on by the Dumbuck House Hotel at the gateway to Dumbarton and Strathblane's ever-popular Kirkhouse Inn to provide stunning new carpets throughout their public areas. Both hotels ordered up to 500 square metres of Stevens & Graham's Scottish-designed and craftsman-woven floor coverings at a cost of up to £60,000 give their establishments a unique new look.

Stevens & Graham managing director John McIlvogue, who acquired the company last year, said: “The carpets they have chosen were designed from first principles by our design team at Jessie Street in Glasgow's Polmadie and created to our specifications by UK craft weavers who are at the top of their profession.” The Dumbuck House Hotel, an 18th century mansion house close to Helensburgh's elegant promenades and the splendours of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, has just undergone a comprehensive refurbishment. As part of its dramatic style statement, it commissioned a tartan from Stevens & Graham based on Farrow & Ball paint colours, creating a tartan of pinks and greys in a unique, contemporary and design-led pattern. It features in the reception, hallways and function hall areas. The Kirkhouse Inn, which was built in 1601 and has a rich and varied history in the parish of Strathblane, just outside Glasgow, has also benefited from major refurbishments in recent times. The owners of the landmark building, close to the famous Glengoyne whisky distillery, chose a more traditional Scottish theme based on Stevens & Graham's Heather Green, one of its unsurpassable range of 136 tartans.

Obituary: Roy Annable

It is with great sadness that Brockway Carpets announces the death of its president Roy Annable. Aged 85, he died peacefully on 25 December 2014.

Born in Stockport in 1929, Roy was the son of a fireman on the railways. From Stockport Grammar School, he went on to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at St Catherine’s College, University of Oxford. In the days when textiles was a major industry in the north, Roy started his career working with Seamless Axminster and Bernard Wardle. Then in 1964, Roy took over Brockway Carpets with his business partner Skene Walley, and later took full ownership in 2000. His vision saw the firm evolve from a traditional weaver of Wilton and Axminster carpets to high quality contemporary floor coverings for domestic and commercial markets at home and abroad. Under his leadership, Brockway was soon to establish itself as a forward thinking company in the carpet industry, and became a pioneer of tufted carpet within the UK.

Stevens & Graham, which was founded in 1947, has recently created up to eight new jobs with the opening this summer of its exclusive Chelsea Harbourstyle showroom in the heart of Glasgow.

Roy’s son and chairman Charles Annable said: “Whilst I will miss him enormously it is a great consolation to know that he led a full and in many ways remarkable life. He continued to enjoy life at Brockway until the relatively recent past, despite some major setbacks to his health over the last 13 years, which was a great credit to his determination and indefatigable spirit.

It has also signed an exclusive distribution agreement worth up to $1 million a year with US-based business Stark, the $500 million turnover New Yorkheadquartered carpet, fabric and wallcoverings business.

For everyone who met Roy he was a true gentleman with a strength of personality which inspired all who knew him - family, friends and work colleagues.

Mr McIlvogue said: "Sales of this kind in the UK are a great shop window for our products. These hotels are associated in the public mind with quality and style and seeing our carpets in positions of prominence there will reinforce that message."

Charles added: “He believed strongly in British craftsmanship and was proud to manufacture beautiful, high quality products in our own factory in the traditional market town of Kidderminster.

T 0141 423 3299

“We are so proud of his vision and achievements, transforming Brockway into the market leading UK brand which is recognised internationally today. He will be greatly missed by us all.”

Obituary: Chris Shave

Chris Shave, founder of CMS Carpets has died aged 66 following a short battle with cancer.

Chris was born in Winchester in 1948, one of five children to Joe and Millicent Shave. Having trained initially as an apprentice metal worker, he established that this wasn’t his chosen vocation and having a natural flair for people, selling and colours he began a career in the carpet industry with initially Maples, then Courts. Having a natural entrepreneurial streak he decided to work for himself. Cormar express expands

Cormar Carpets has expanded its next day collection points and delivery fleet to further improve its service to retailers.

Four further express centres – in Croydon, Godstone, Northampton and Sheffield - have been added to Cormar’s network of next day collection points, making a total of 26 locations across the country. This means that the majority of retailers are now less than a 30 minute drive away from the nearest collection point. In addition, Cormar has also invested in its nationwide delivery operation and strengthened its fleet with 14 new DAF trucks and 10 swap body trucks (used for efficiency and flexibility). The vehicles are built to the new Euro 6 specification, making them the latest in vehicle technology and ensuring Cormar operates the cleanest and most eco-friendly vehicles. Six 18 tonne drawbar units and 10 swap bodies will support the outbase depots. The remaining eight vehicles, with a new spec 18 tonne fixed body rigid, will support the new cross dock operations. Said Craig Marshall, Cormar’s logistics manager: “With over 3,000 carpet deliveries each week we are always looking at ways to maintain our fast, reliable delivery service to retail customers. By adding extra collection centres and vehicles ahead of the peak seasonal period, we optimised our intensive delivery service to meet the increase in demand over one of our busiest times of the year without any compromise to service. “Our own nationwide delivery fleet is an important part of our offering to independent carpet retailers and local carpet shops, differentiating us from many of our competitors, and earning us a reputation as one of the speediest and most reliable delivery services around.” The next day collection service, which operates Monday to Friday, was launched two years ago as an additional free service, allowing retailers and contractors to pick up carpet the next day from a choice of collection centres throughout the country. It was over three decades ago that Cormar decided to make door-to-door delivery part of its service. Now from its Bury, Lancashire, base, it delivers right across the UK direct from site and through 25 additional outbases, strategically located to offer an average 48 hour nationwide turnaround service to customers. 2015 is time for training

The Academy for Excellence in Flooring is encouraging fitters and retailers to make the most of 2015 by committing to improve skills and knowledge.

With the well-established Master Installer scheme shaping the future of the industry through manufacturer-backed warranties on workmanship, the Academy is considered the benchmark in training for the flooring industry. Late in 2014, the Manchester facility introduced a well-received bespoke training package, so that both retailers and fitters can tailor courses to exact requirements. Whether improving product knowledge on the Quick-Step or Pergo ranges to boost sales, or fine-tuning specialist skills such as stair installations, the Academy can provide content that will make a true difference. “Whether through our foundation courses, the Master Installer concept, or a bespoke programme, making the effort to undergo training now will give benefits long into the future,” says Lee Thompson, procurement and technical manager. “Proof lies in Master Installers that have reported an upturn in work and retailers that have claimed the extra product knowledge has helped sales and customer interaction.” Thanks to state-of-the-art training facilities, including bays featuring complex elements such as stairs and sanitary ware along with a fully equipped classroom environment, since it opened in 2012 the Academy has become regarded as one of the UK’s foremost flooring training facilities. Offering the Quick-Step Master Installer and Pergo Master Pro programmes for residential and commercial fitters respectively, the Academy is one of the few centres in the UK to provide manufacturer-backed warranties on workmanship. Bespoke courses can be provided on request with content tailored to meet specific learning and development needs. Full details of the Master Installer and Master Pro programmes along with other courses can be found by visiting the Academy’s website. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Closed-loop recycling

Now in its third year, Forbo Flooring’s Back to the Floor take back scheme offers a genuine closed-loop recycling solution for Forbo flooring installation off-cuts. Rising volumes of material that go back into new products are contributing to the transition towards a Circular Economy in the flooring sector.

The scheme has expanded greatly in its second year with the volume of flooring off-cuts collected rising to three times the amount collected in 2013. Back to the Floor Scheme Co-ordinator, Michelle Brewer said: “With more collectors coming on board amid growing awareness of how the scheme can assist flooring professionals with their recycling activities, we have seen tonnages increase dramatically in the past 12 months.” Forbo off-cuts, as well as cushioned vinyl flooring off-cuts from most manufacturers, are collected across the UK and recycled back into new flooring products across the company’s portfolio. The scheme offers both environmental and economic benefits for participants through diversion of waste material from landfill and preservation of raw material resources for use in new products. Flooring contractors can benefit from savings on disposal costs versus sending their waste flooring material to landfill.

Branching out

Green Tree Distribution have new people in place in their Southern region.

As an established BTTF collector, Oxbridge Carpets Ltd has already sent back six collections of two bulk bags since signing up to the scheme over a year ago. “Without a doubt it has saved us on disposal costs,” commented John Webb, Oxbridge’s Warehouse Manager. “It’s important to recycle where we can, so we see the scheme as a positive thing. All our fitters are given polythene bags for the off-cuts which are then bulked up at our site prior to collection.”

Sue Howland joins as the new Southern Sales Manager. With a background in flooring sales management spanning over 30 years, Sue brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Green Tree family.

All Back to the Floor scheme members are provided with colour-coded polythene bags and bulk bags free of charge, which are collected directly from site or a contractor’s premises.

Ross Garrard has been promoted to take over as Operations Director at Green Tree Distribution South. Ross, who joined the company in June 2014 as Southern Sales Manager, has already brought a great deal of success since the launch of the Brentwood depot, and the company is looking forward to his contribution in 2015.

Forbo has invested significantly in the recycling processes at three of its UK sites where material is recycled back into new products. Tessera off-cuts are processed at the Bamber Bridge plant near Preston, while the Flotex and vinyl flooring goes back into flooring at the Ripley site. At Forbo’s plant in Kirkcaldy, Marmoleum off-cuts are shredded into very fine pieces that are used in new Marmoleum production. T0161 925 8760

Six of the best from Karndean

Karndean Designflooring is expanding its successful collection and unveiling a brand new point-of-sale unit as part of its LooseLay Series Three launch.

Available from March 2015, the six new sophisticated wood designs tap into the trend for popular oak tones, fashionable rustics and deep greys. With a 15 year residential guarantee, the complete Karndean LooseLay collection will now feature 19 wood designs and eight stone tiles. Inspired by nature, the collection features a wide range of tones from the light, blonde hues of Cambridge LLP113 to the striking, warm ginger tones of Burlington LLP10. Popular for its unique designs and easy-fit approach, Karndean LooseLay is an innovative format of luxury vinyl flooring boasting enhanced acoustic properties and excellent environmental credentials. Karndean LooseLay’s friction grip backing and increased dimensional stability secures the floor firmly in place. It can be installed over most hard floors as long as they’re dry, smooth, sound and dust-free. The collection’s large scale (41.3” x 9.85”) planks and (19.7” x 24”) tiles combined with the fact that it’s quick and easy to fit, means reduced downtime, mess and installation costs. “Homeowners are seeing the benefits of Karndean LooseLay in place of traditional carpet and laminate, and it’s continuing to grow from strength to strength in the marketplace,” commented Paul Barratt, managing director of Karndean Designflooring. He said: “The collection is not only design-led but it’s also compatible with underfloor heating and the individual planks allow easy access at all times. Our newest wood designs are a welcome addition and reflect the trends we’re seeing within interior design.” The future proof LooseLay POS unit holds all three series, instantly showcasing the colour bank with a mixture of sample boards and product. Interactive in its design, customers can arrange the samples on the viewing platform. T 01386 820185

Serving up style

With a combination of decorative appeal and sustainable slip resistance, Polyflor’s new Polysafe Verona PUR sheet vinyl range continues to enhance a wide variety of commercial and residential environments. One such example is at Middleton Technology School in Manchester, where as part of a recent school refurbishment, the range has been installed into serving and dining areas of the school refectory, adding a bright and uplifting feel to the dining hall. Fitted into a specially housed structure separate to the main school building, Polysafe Verona was the flooring of choice due to its very heavy commercial classification. This flooring is able to provide slip resistance in areas where there are regular spillages and a high volume of traffic, whilst still retaining an attractive appearance thanks to the product’s carborundumfree design and PUR reinforcement for ease of cleaning. Specified by main contractor H Bell & Sons (Rochdale) Ltd and installed by Winton Flooring in Manchester, the fresh hue of Summer Coulis 5217 has been used throughout front and back of house to provide a safe yet attractive floor finish that creates a welcoming and relaxing environment, suitable for pupils during lunch breaks. In educational settings, it is vital for a safety floor to perform and Polysafe Verona is fully certified to achieve the tried and tested Polysafe slip resistance credentials. Meeting HSE and UK Slip Group Guidelines to deliver sustained wet slip resistance throughout the guaranteed life of the product, Verona achieves 36+ on the Pendulum wet test and has a surface roughness of 20 microns and above, classifying the product as low slip potential. Verona fully adheres to EN 13845 – the European Standard for safety flooring and meets the 50,000 cycles abrasion test, ensuring the virtually invisible particles incorporated into the product are sustainable and provide continued friction over the long term.
