Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE The WOOLSAFE Mark has gone Green! The WOOLSAFE Organisation has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal and EcoLogo in North America, to enable those WOOLSAFE approved products that are ecologically responsible to be recognised and promoted as such.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Regular Maintenance
Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.
Periodic Cleaning
When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company.
If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approved products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package: WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
General Rules for Spot Removal • Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth • Scoop up or scrape off solids
Chemspec Europe is one of the first WOOLSAFE Licensees in the UK to have a ‘green’ product certified. It is expected that other products will follow shortly.
For the widest range of WOOLSAFE approved products www.chemspec-europe.com

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment – if unsure, use solvent first • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards • BLOT, do NOT rub
• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge
• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles • When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer
Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats
The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves. Protective treatments Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular cleaning is still required.
Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDER section.) Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.
This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.
N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match.
For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
The original carpet tile
SHEDDING
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.
6
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
• shedding • pulled loops
SPROUTING
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
SHADING
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
STATIC
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.
Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.
A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990). THE STOCKLISTS January 2010

PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.
The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course. THE STOCKLISTS January 2010
FLATTENING
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
SOILING
Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Spillages
- Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil
carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.
T HE R EGENCY
Collection
It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop. Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality. Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
WOVEN
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.
Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.
Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is BONDED Tip Sheared Level Loop Tip Sheared Level Loop Sheared Level Loop a versatile, textured finish that is idealTipfor plain colours. Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then used for commercial carpet tiles. sheared to give a smooth finish. Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.interfloor.com
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.
www.interfloor.com
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
Benefits
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards
How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Types
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired

DOMOTEX 2010 DOMOTEX HERALDS A HAPPY NEW YEAR Domotex (Hannover, 16-19 January) is almost upon us! We look forward to welcoming many of you to our stand, E42 in Hall 6. Join us for some refreshments and to talk about what we can do with you to help make 2010 a prosperous New Year. We’re predicting it could be a surprisingly good one, despite a market place that we know will continue to be challenging, as we’ll be working harder than ever to bring you the right products, prices and services to make your job easier. So come and see what we’ve got in store for 2010, including our new wool ranges, Chelsea, Hudson and Lawrence and our long-awaited contract tiles programme.
ALL SQUARED UP First pictures of our new tile programme! 2010 sees the long-awaited official launch of our new contract tile programme, which has come along leaps and bounds since Harrogate. Vancouver is a lovely frisée, a heavier cut pile, based on our popular contract carpet range, Fleur. San Francisco is a heavier, loop pile, with a contrast fleck effect. Both ranges are made from 100% solution dyed polyamide yarn with modified bitumen backing, in 16 attractive colours.
CHELSEA SCORES A WINNER! We feel sure that 2010 will also be the year for Chelsea, our latest 100% Pure New Wool collection, a luxurious 3-ply yarn Pure New Wool low level loop. Available in 4m and 5m width in rolls and cut lengths, it comes in eight contemporary shades of biscuit, grey, brown, taupe and mushroom: Sea Salt, Driftwood, Ash, Graphite, Cream, Sand, Mud and Cork.

We tick all the boxes!
Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to.
Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours.
A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line.
Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.
As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others.
the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality
Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.
Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of the product range to consumers with a market-leading modular POS system which they will deliver and design to suit your store.
Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland.
Furlong believes in working in partnership with their customers to provide products and services that ticks all the boxes.
Investing in quality and service

Mohawk recycles over 3 billion plastic bottles each year. By controlling every aspect of “Mohawk recycles over 3 billion the recycling plastic bottles each year.” process, Mohawk guarantees the highest standards of performance in its luxurious and beautiful carpet. Water works at Axminster Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, environmentalist and celebrity TV chef, was guest of honour at the launch of Axminster Carpets’ revolutionary new Water Recycling Plant. Sited at their mill in Buckfast on the edge of Dartmoor, the Company has traditionally used water from the local River Dart to wash greasy wool prior to the spinning process as well as dyeing yarn. Previously the waste water from the manufacturing processes would be discharged and treated by the local water authority, but Axminster Carpets has invested in excess of £2m in a brand new facility engineered to convert its waste water back to a level where it can be completely reused. Now, 95% of their waste water, over 2 million litres per week, will be piped back into the plant processes without entering the eco-system after having all the contaminants removed. The residual waste is being converted to bio-fuel with the long term plan to use this to power the company’s lorry fleet and the manufacturing plant.
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall (right) talks with Josh Dutfield, Axminster MD (centre) and Simon Dutfield, Chairman.
The commissioning of this new water treatment plant represents Axminster Carpets’ ongoing strategy to minimise the impact of its yarn spinning and carpet manufacturing processes on the environment. The company’s vision is to become the industry leader in sustainable low carbon manufacturing to support its ‘Natural, British, Beautiful’ ethos. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall stated at the launch ceremony that it was a ‘bold investment, with high economic and environmental benefits’ he went on to say that ‘Axminster Carpets were to be applauded for taking a leading role and for being a responsible manufacturer’
Josh Dutfield, Axminster Carpets Group Managing Director, responded by saying that it was a ‘win win situation’. ‘As a Company who takes environmental issues very seriously we can see that any investment of this type is not only good for the Planet, but also pays back many times over in cost savings to the business’. ‘We have recently launched the first Carbon Neutral range of carpets branded Swaledale, and following an independent assessment of our carbon footprint our plan is to reduce our carbon emissions ahead of Government targets and to be a leader in our industry’ T 01297 630651

News Expert approach to Harrogate Harrogate’s Flooring Show has set out a new approach to the hall layout to “bring back the professionalism and expertise” to the September event, say organisers. In a new move, Hall B has been designated for demonstrations plus contract and non-carpet products. A large area is available for installation, product and tool demonstrations which will be supported by the Contract Flooring Association and the National Institute of Carpet and Floorlayers. Master fitter Steve Ramsden and top installers demonstrate their expertise.
“We want to make a real feature of sharing skills in the flooring industry and create an area where professionals can exchange expertise and information’, says show organiser David Wildman. Plans include a ‘Test the Expert’ feature and scheduled demonstration events. The show had become a little unfocussed and confusing. We want to have better organisation for visitors and exhibitors so that they can get the most out of the event,” said David.
Halls A, C & M will be predominantly focussed on carpets and rugs with Hall B reserved for contract flooring, smooth flooring, wood laminate and vinyl, tools and accessories. Many of these activities were previously held in Hall Q which was more difficult to access from the main exhibition area. The momentum behind the Harrogate event has continued to build with strong support from major flooring companies. More than 50 exhibitors have already signed and over a dozen more have reservations – a position well ahead of target according to organisers.
“Many of the major players in the sector have already committed and we are planning an exciting event to inject new life into the format and increase its relevance to the widest possible audience,” says David Wildman. The event has also launched its new website with a list of exhibitors to date and other information including the floor plans at www.harrogateflooringshow.net T 01423 779967 www.harrogateflooringshow.net
Your knees need this As all contractors know, continuous kneeling down puts enormous pressure on your knees and periods of absence due to chronic joint injuries are a real possibility, costing time and money. However, there is an answer in Redbacks, the latest generation of knee pads designed to bring protection and reduce the chances of injury for flooring installers. Exclusively available through your local Floorwise distributor, Redbacks bring unrivalled cushioning for the knee and are engineered to last 10 times longer than foam pads.
Redbacks protect knees through the patented Matrix Impact System™, which is composed of a tubular matrix holding a spring in place. The critical positioning of the spring provides a large uniform area to take the pressure of kneeling and disperse it evenly through the structure and into the ground. The matrix itself is curved to contour around the knee and prevent rocking but also has enough movement to allow for small muscle contractions and the shifting of the kneecap under pressure. The result is comfort ‘under knee’ and protection where you need it most. In fact, so good is the Matrix impact system that Redbacks are 70% better at absorbing the force of a human subject when walking on the knee than any slide-in knee pad currently on the market. Redbacks are cheaper than many leading kneepad brands on the market, once again bringing excellent value from your local Floorwise stockist.

IVC updates appearance As part of it’s on-going strategy to adapt and develop its business model to offer the complete product and service package to its customers, IVC Group has given a new look and name to it’s commercial flooring division – itec® contract floors.
Itec® replaces the previous Q-Pro brand and is supported by a fresh new look that will appear in all literature and sampling from the manufacturer. As part of a global realignment strategy, the itec® brand will help to strengthen IVC Group’s position within the commercial sector.
Francis Debrabandere, Commercial Director, explains: “In 2010 we have exciting plans for IVC which will be rolled out in the coming months. One such plan is to build our presence in the contract sector and while we offer excellent commercial products, our Q-Pro range was little known in the UK.Therefore, we have taken the step to rebrand to itec® to create a future proof image that will also focus the mind of contractors, specifiers and designers on our excellent commercial product offering.” T +32 5665 3211 www.ivcgroup.com 32

News Tragic death of Pierre Lano The tragic death of Pierre Lano has saddened and shocked the flooring industry across Europe after the highly respected and inspirational entrepreneur took his own life on December 9. He was aged 65. ‘Pierre Lano was one of the most charismatic and energetic people in the flooring business,” said David Spragg of The Stocklists. “He cared deeply about the industry and the people in it. He made time to talk to everyone no matter how busy he was. His cheerfulness and enthusiasm for life makes his death all the more of a shock.” Pierre Lano was born on August 23, 1944 in Harelbeke and in 1970 he took over the family textile business. He positioned the company in a number of profitable niche markets where quality and service are important. The company grew into a major player with worldwide recognition.
He was proud of his company that he built up to a “state of the art” model within the sector. In his private life as well as in business, he managed to build bridges. In his factories, he knew almost all 500 employees by name. Many have been working for him their entire career. He encouraged his people to perform to the best of their abilities.
In 2008 his company also suffered the problems the whole textile industry was confronted with. At the end of 2008 Pierre Lano transferred all his operational responsibilities to the professional management that he had gathered around him and he retired to the level of the Board of Directors. He advised and shared his knowledge and experience. As he already stated in 2005: “I delegate a lot, that’s the good side of my political mandate. Due to my absences, I was obliged to ensure that there was a strong management that could take decisions.” Since early 2009, Lano focused on its strategic repositioning. Encouraging results from this exercise confirm that the right choices were made. He was not only active as a textile entrepreneur but was also a long time mayor and Member of Parliament. Pierre Lano was known as a flamboyant and social character. With grief we say goodbye to a driven entrepreneur and the inspirer of the Lano Group. Messages of condolence may be sent to condolences@lano.be

Ulster invests £30m to fund future success As part of its continued investment programme Ulster Carpets have committed to spending £30m constructing a UK-based state of the art manufacturing facility in Portadown at its Seagoe site, setting an industry standard for sustainable 21st century manufacturing. The first phase of this development is the completion of a new Distribution Centre in February 2010, ensuring that Ulster continue to exceed the high level of customer service and reliability to the UK Retail market for which they are renowned.
During 2009 Ulster invested £3.5m in key aspects of its business in the UK.This included the installation of two new wilton looms with the capability of weaving 5m wide carpet for its Ulster Velvet and York Wilton ranges, which are now offered in 5 colour matching widths; 5m, 4m, 3m, 2m and 1m, giving a deluxe finish. Ulster’s continual drive to embrace innovative technology is further highlighted with its purchase of a new £0.5m automated assembly-winding machine for Ulster Yarns, its yarnspinning factory at Ravensthorpe Mills,Yorkshire. This is Ulster’s manufacturing centre for raw material and enables them to have total control over the quality of yarn and long term security of supply. Managing Director Nick Coburn said, “Ulster have been successful throughout the years because of our endeavour to listen and act on the needs of our customers and the focus we place on innovation. These factors give us the confidence to invest long term in the UK and Ireland, strengthening our service offering to our key customer base and securing hundreds of high value added local jobs.” 34

News Cornering the market The new Skiffers from Stairrods (UK) protect skirting corners from scuffing and becoming chipped, whilst ensuring new paintwork and varnish remains pristine and smart.
Shabby paintwork or worn varnish can easily create a negative impression, and the corners of wooden skirting are particularly vulnerable to premature damage caused by vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, suitcases and heavy foot traffic. Whether in a private home or public place, such as a restaurant, guest house or function room, fitting Skiffers will provide useful protection and create an attractive decorative feature.
Cast in solid brass, these attractive corner protectors are available in seven finishes, which complement existing door thresholds, door furniture and stair rods: polished, satin and antique brass, satin nickel, chrome, pewter, and black. There are three alternative sizes, dependent on the depth of the skirting board: 75mm, 117mm and 134mm, which are supplied in packs of six. Each Skiffer is supplied with six screws in a matching finish. These new Skiffers are the latest addition to the extensive range of flooring accessories from Stairrods (UK), and provide an additional opportunity to retailers and fitters alike to add value to a flooring installation. Young designers lead the way to NEC National Floor Show organisers have announced a bunch of initiatives for the Birmingham event in September and added a number of new exhibitors including flagship brand Brintons and also adhesives companies Bostik and Sika.
National Floor Show
“The event is progressing well,” says Sunny Patel of UBM. “We plan to put on a show the industry can be proud of, full of exciting feature areas that add business benefits and attract new visitors.” One of the feature areas is a showcase for young designer talent with a presentation by students on various flooring-based courses at Acrington & Rossendale College working with the Interior Design students from Blackburn college. Course tutor Brian Enderwitz commented: “The floorcovering staff and students are very excited to be participating at National Floor Show 2010. Both colleges are keen to explore as many new and traditional concepts in floorcovering as possible. "We have already received promises of product support from many manufacturers and have created a section on our VLE where our learners, Blackburn students and manufacturers can collaborate on the project,” said Brian. "Our apprentices and Diploma students are looking forward to having the chance to translate the design students’ concepts into practical display features.”
In the latest newsletter to the trade, UBM have been quick to answer any prejudice about the NEC venue. Answering a question about whether Birmingham was too big for the floor show they said: “This venue provides us room to grow the show, it does not restrict us in terms of layout, ensuring a level playing field for all exhibitors. The show will take place in halls 9 and 10, we will block off the other halls ensuring that the event is not swallowed up by the larger venue.”
Broad Street is the focus of Birmingham’s social life.
Promote your wholesale business every month in our new Regional Wholesale Distributors Directory
On the social aspects of the location, Sunny comments: “We will implement an exciting social programme, based around the vibrant Broad Street, for those who wish to socialise with colleagues. However, due to all the extra visitors we will be attracting to the show, exhibitors may just wish to put their feet up in the evenings!” The organisers have also been busy putting an accommodation offer together for overnight visitors with rooms at the Hilton Metropole starting at £69 per night. News A cut above the rest Leading UK tufted carpet manufacturer Cormar Carpets has invested over £1million in its cut length system over the past two years to keep the company at the cutting edge of customer needs.
The latest phase has seen a new conveyor system installed between the warehouse and the cutting tables and the purchase of four new ‘reach’ boom trucks to service the updated system.
“The project provides several benefits for the business and customers,” said Cormar md, David Judge. “The new conveyor link from warehouse to cut lengths machines will halve the journey time for carpet rolls going into and out of the department, increasing cutting rate and capacity.
“The reduced boom truck travelling and new reach trucks will cut traffic conflict in both operational and warehouse areas and will result in local environmental benefits and energy savings. Segregating the boom truck traffic from operational areas also has safety benefits for Cormar employees as it reduces the risk of accident or collision.”
Other improvements include an upgraded state-of-the-art measuring system, new labelling system and developments in IT. An automated roll wrapping mechanism, currently under development, will also contribute to improving the effectiveness of the cutting process. This latest phase follows on from the upgrade to the sortation system in July 2008 which maximised Cormar’s ability to cut, load and ship to tight deadlines. T 01204 881234 www.cormarcarpets.co.uk

News Team GB gets a lift A process operator from Cormar Carpets has qualified for an international fork lift truck competition in Germany, after securing second place in a national challenge organised by fork lift truck manufacturer, Linde Sterling.
Runner up Colin Booth, 33, will be making his debut in the 2010 Stapler Cup Competition for the Linde Sterling English team. They will be up against eight other European teams, all made up of the country’s three best fork lift drivers, and will compete in a series of driving tests. “I am really delighted to be able to represent England and participate in the international competition and I am hoping we win!” says Colin, who has been driving fork lifts for the last seven years and joined Cormar four years ago.
“I won the first heat of the regional competition and then went forward to the national final. The Linde Sterling training centre, in Westhoughton, was transformed into a complex maze of disciplines which included steering, stacking, de-stacking, precision and careful transportation, and finally time trails. And I came second.” One of the best known names in UK carpet manufacture, Cormar operates from two mills – Holme Mill in Ramsbottom and Brookhouse Mill in Greenmount and has been supplying retailers and wholesalers in the UK and Ireland with affordable and practical ranges for more than 50 years – that’s why over one million customers choose Cormar Carpets every year. Cyber showcase for Foxi Ratcliffe's Underlays have launched a new website, dedicated to the promotion of Foxi Rug Underlay. This product has been in the Ratcliffe stable for almost 10 years now and it remains a very popular anti-slip solution for all types of rugs. Retailers can buy the product in pre-cut pieces or in one of four roll widths. The website is designed to help both trade and public visitors source Foxi. Individuals will be pointed in the direction of their nearest stockist as Ratcliffe's do not sell directly to the public. Sales during 2009 were slightly up on the previous year and another initiative, consumer magazine advertising, should further help keep the product in the public's eye. Richard Ratcliffe, Director, said that before too long the links page will list as many Foxi stockists as possible and make consumer sourcing even easier. T 01282 421026 www.foxirugtamer.co.uk
Carbon positive position for Kronospan Two internationally recognised environmental standards, which cement those certified as leaders in sustainability, have been awarded to Kronospan. The producer of high quality wood-based panels and associated products has had its carbon footprint independently measured and certified by BlueGreen Carbon, and can now officially supply Carbon Positive chipboard products. Kronospan has also achieved CARB low formaldehyde accreditation, further demonstrating its uncompromising commitment to the environment. Kronospan manufactures its panels in the UK using wood sourced from FSC certified sustainable forests and recycled wood to produce MDF, chipboard and melamine faced panels for use in domestic and commercial kitchens, bathrooms and flooring systems. The BlueGreen Carbon standard, awarded for all chipboard products, recognises Kronospan’s carbon mitigation policy which has been in place at its UK manufacturing site for almost a decade.
Iain Ferguson, environmental manager at Kronospan, explains: “Over the past 10 years we’ve invested upwards of £15 million in making our processes more environmentally friendly. We looked at how we could use materials differently, cleaned up the materials coming in to the factory and removed any contaminants. 40
January 2010
“We’ve worked with our whole supply chain to make sure that at every stage of the sourcing process there are consistent quality protocols in place, ultimately encouraging our suppliers to improve the standard of materials sent to us. For this reason we didn’t need any environmental ‘credits’ or to offset any extra carbon to achieve the BlueGreen Carbon standard as our processes were already so sustainable.” Earlier this year Kronospan was also awarded the CARB accreditation, a US-based standard which recognises manufacturers that produce MDF panels with a far lower content of formaldehyde than the industry standard. Kronospan achieved both phase one and phase two of the accreditation, and MDF panels meeting these criteria are in production for retailers throughout Europe, further improving the company’s sustainability arsenal and complementing it’s carbon positive status.
Iain continues:“As sustainability issues continue to top the specification agenda, more and more customers are asking for proof that our environmental systems are robust. We’ve always had incredibly high sustainability standards, but to have this recognized by official third party organisations reassures our customers that our products and processes operate with the utmost respect for, and minimal possible impact on, the environment.” T 01691 773361

Carpenter weighs in Polyurethane underlay manufacturer, Carpenter, will be showing its two new heavy density underlays, Extrastep and Ultrastep, at Domotex. Extrastep is a 6mm thick polyurethane underlay that has been specifically developed for the European domestic and the UK contract markets. National sales manager Helen Rowberry said: "We are aware that Europe has a taste for thinner and denser underlays so Extrastep is ideal and we have great hopes for it. It is recommended for doublestick installations and also has IMO Wheelmark certification for use in the cruise liner sector. We have already made an impact with UK contractors since launching Extrastep at Harrogate.”
Ultrastep is the same heavy density polyurethane but is 9mm thick and aimed at applications demanding a more luxurious underlay product. Like Extrastep, it can be used for both stretchfit or doublestick installations.
Laneve launched for wool integrity

The Laneve brand offers additional independently verified assurances around the integrity, traceability and sustainability of the wool.
Carpenter is a new member of the Contract Flooring Association and will be introducing both underlays as 180kg per cubic metre, probably the heaviest density carpet underlays available, to the CFA Membership.
The ability to totally manage wool in an integrated supply chain enables greater differentiation of New Zealand Wool. Recognising the benefits this brings to the market, Wools of New Zealand will launch its new integrity mark, Laneve, at Domotex. While the Wools of New Zealand brand relates to the attributes of the carpet, Laneve relates to the attributes associated with the wool itself from farm gate to retail outlet. The Wools of New Zealand stand at Domotex will be exhibiting a number of Laneve collections from manufacturers who have signed up to the new programme.
Three carpets are to be laid on the stand – the feature carpet is a patterned wilton made by Tisca of Switzerland, with a floral design inspired by the alpine “Frauenschuh” or ‘ladies slipper’ as it is known in the UK. The four colours utilised are from the Wools of New Zealand 2010 colour palette. The Laneve wool yarn has been supplied by the Danish spinner Danspin. Flower on Flooring News Inside the Internet
As the Internet has expanded beyond all expectations, so it is becoming increasingly of interest to the business world and offering a growing number of opportunities, either to provide add-on sales or increase efficiency by automating processes such as customer enquiries. The traditional world of retailing still needs the same interpersonal skills required to maintain customer loyalty, but these can now be complemented by attracting enquiries and orders through dedicated websites.
One of the most recent initiatives to focus on the flooring industry is www.beautifulflooring.co.uk, which has been designed to allow consumers to view a wide selection of products online and then direct them to their nearest flooring retailer. Launched by Bond Retail Marketing as an industry-wide facility, it features all 38 of the buying group's members and a recruitment drive is ongoing to sign up retailers in various areas around the UK.
Following developmental work in partnership with manufacturers and suppliers of carpet, smooth flooring and rugs, visitors to the site will be able to view 950 carpets and up to 200 options of vinyl, laminate, solid wood and LVT designs. In addition to showing approximately 2800 rug options, the website will also allow consumers to create bespoke versions, choosing their own colour and type of structure. These can then be viewed in situ within a choice of 10 different room settings to provide a virtual representation and allow consumers to gauge the effect of their creations.
The choice of floor coverings featured on the website will be exclusive and unbranded, with dedicated displays within member stores replicating the online offering of carpet and smooth flooring. Samples of these will also be available to order, delivered in 48 hours.
The Carpet Foundation reports that visitor numbers to its website www.carpetfoundation.com have jumped from 33,000 as recently as 2007 to over 100,000 at the end of November 2009. One in three visits results in a search for the nearest retailer, while the most popular pages are from the ‘Buying a Carpet’ section, where consumers source information and advice, increasingly staying longer and viewing more pages.

The CF also recently offered all registered specialists a free one page website on the site and the facility to update whenever required at no extra cost. Members can now not only benefit directly from increased visitor numbers but can also track how many consumers visit their page, view their profile and look for directions to their business, the foundation states. Plans for 2010 include more initiatives, such as pay per click, to drive more traffic to the site to the benefit of industry members, while continuing to direct consumers to retailers to receive professional advice and service.
www.kahrs.com/uk
Individual manufacturers have been equally active online, as can be seen by the example of Kährs: 'The Internet is a great resource and retailers that are quick to embrace modern technology have huge capacity for potential ‘e-tail’ growth,' said Harvey Booth, UK sales manager. 'Dedicated retail websites allow companies to advertise themselves, their services and their products to a far wider audience, and the inclusion of customer feedback and references gives further ‘third party’ endorsement. With many consumers now checking out websites before visiting a shop, this first impression is incredibly valuable!'
He highlighted additional advantages, such as providing access to PDF brochures that save on printing and postage costs, while allowing manufacturers to provide instant additional support to trade customers while delivering a consistent message. 'Our own initiatives include an extensive professional website resource, Kährs official internet dealer scheme, which provides further support to both the retailer and consumer, and a virtual showroom where visitors can lay a floor online. All can be accessed via www.kahrs.co.uk,' Booth concluded.
Ulster Carpets is another manufacturer with a comprehensive online offering, using it to show its latest current ranges and designs to consumers. In addition to searching for appropriate ranges, styles or colours, co-ordinating and complimentary products can also be found. After accessing the company's latest catalogue, samples for delivery within two or three working days can be ordered. Consumers are also directed to their nearest retailer and can view

installation and aftercare advice, or email questions to the company. From a trade perspective, registered retailers can view stocks, reserve or order stock and track orders. Replicating Ulster's customer services helpline, its online facility is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, the company stated.
Discussing the rise of online retail sales, Nick Pratt of Sitemakers said that this has now moved on from CDs, books and electrical items to include those products that are tailored to the customer's needs, such as flooring. 'Carpet in particular is one product that is difficult to sell online without human intervention. But this does not mean that there is no place for the Internet in this process,' he said. 'This is where multi-channel retailing makes sense. Here we see customers maybe starting a transaction in-store, continuing their research online, and possibly going back to the website to complete the transaction.
sell their products will protect their own market share and take a slice form others who don’t.' Laura Cohen, marketing manager of yourfloors.co.uk agreed that an Internet presence can enhance sales: 'Your online store is open when the high street store is closed. It’s about embracing change and understanding the web and how to use it to your advantage which many flooring retailers are now doing.' With more consumers wishing to shop online and more flooring retailers embracing this technology, Cohen stated that additional sales can be generated through either direct orders or encouraging consumers to visit the store. 'I predict more and more independent flooring retailers will have an online presence either via a brochure site driving consumers in store or an e-commerce site which they have independently developed or through a group’s portal. We are currently working on further enhancements such as offering fitting and accessories online which will make yourfloors.co.uk a one stop shop for consumers, increase the average basket size and create additional sales,' she said. Another online flooring facility is that of www.carpetinfo.co.uk, designed as a consumer-facing resource aiming to provide unbiased information on carpet for homeowners. Its various features include neutral information on fibre types, styles, colour and texture, as well as care advice, and also includes a comprehensive retailer listing, sorted by geographical region, to provide access to local specialists. Retailers featured on the site benefit from association with helpful advice, rather than sales-driven patter, the organiser stated. It also allows consumers to request brochures from manufacturers, as well as read in-depth articles on relevant flooring topics.
'Maybe they complete the transaction in-store, but carry out all of their research online.Whatever the balance, the customer has the choice to communicate with their supplier in the ways that are most convenient for them at any particular point. Flooring and carpet retailers who adopt these multi-channel retailing principles to help www.yourfloors.co.uk www.thestocklists.com/floorsites
The Stocklists magazine offers retailers a budget option to get representation on the net with their Floorsites package at just £390 plus £90 per year. The British Wool column British Wool choose ‘Naturally Green’ for New Year promotions
Naturally Green – the new campaign for British Wool at leading trade shows.
The New Year always begins with a rush of activity for the BWMB marketing team as it heads on to the road to promote British Wool at leading international trade shows. As the market for British Wool is international, the need to attend trade shows in other countries is fundamental to maintaining the brand across the world. “In recent years we have become aware that it is important to be seen at major trade events and fly the flag for British Wool and the products made from it,” explained Richard Poole, European Business Manager at the BWMB. The BWMB see their role as multi-faceted, connecting people within the industry globally, informing them about UK grown wool and the best breeds to use for products, educating people about wool generally and also promoting British Wool carpet ranges made by their licensees. The BWMB has rolled out a series of new marketing campaigns to help promote British Wool and the latest - the ‘Naturally Green’ campaign will showcase their leading role in positioning wool as the environmentally favourable fibre for carpet. The campaign will form a major part of their activities at both Domotex in Germany and Surfaces in Las Vegas.
British Wool attend Domotex 2010
At Domotex 2010 the BWMB operate a business-centre style stand for British Wool licensees including merchants, spinners and manufacturers whilst promoting the fibre as the natural, sustainable fibre for carpet under the ‘Naturally Green’ campaign. The recent Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) Study completed to ISO 14040 by Leeds University has provided British Wool with valuable credibility and vital information for the industry at a time when many manufacturers are looking to address the environmental status of their products and their business. The BWMB has attached the LCA to their platinum quality assurance certification, which will allow manufacturers to have the path of their fibre outlined at every stage from wool auction to finished yarn. “We can guarantee the source of the fibre through the assurance certification system and this will make the LCA a valuable document to manufacturers as they choose to support aspects of their ‘green’ marketing,” Richard Poole, European Business Manager said. The aim is that manufacturers will see the marketing benefit of the Platinum Certificate as adding valuable credibility and quality standards to their products and in the coming year, the BWMB will be promoting this to ensure that retailers understand what it means to their customer. British Wool can be found in Hall 5 The recent LCA backs-up British Wool’s Stand F38.
The Las Vegas carpet experience - Surfaces 2010
British Wool will host a stand with partners Brintons and Axminster Carpets at the leading American show in Las Vegas. “This is very much a product led show for us and we are delighted to have two well-known and highly respected brands accompanying us at this event.” The USA has seen a huge turn to the environmental agenda in the last two years and whilst wool is still a minority fibre for carpet there, it is now attracting a lot of new interest because of its natural origin. “The ‘Naturally Green’ promotion is the perfect message for this market at this time,”Tim Booth, Product Development Manager at the BWMB commented, adding, “Our environmental study will help us position British Wool as the ‘Planet Friendly fibre for Carpet’.” The British Wool ISO 14040 environmental accreditation adds real credibility to the British Wool campaign in a valuable market that is taking a serious stance on ‘green-washing’ – the term given to unproven claims about environmental status. “British Wool, grown on sheep breeds that graze freely in the UK is a natural fibre which has the greenest of beginnings and is the most sustainable fibre available to carpet. Whilst the origin is clearly excellent, we still wanted to offer detail and data to the carpet industry and our LCA report does exactly that.” British Wool can be found on stand 4731. Happier New Year Retailers have reasons to be cheerful after surviving the recession
Retailers reported an upbeat attitude to surviving the recession in 2009 with 65% saying circumstances had been better than expected in our end-of-year survey of market conditions taken just before Christmas. Only 25% said it was worse than they feared while just over 5% had a ‘good recession’. And two-thirds of retailers think this year will improve!
The ‘better than expected’ result for 2009 makes you wonder what we were expecting as the survey sample reported very substantially reduced sales. Almost half our respondents said sales were down between 15 and 20% and altogether 76% of our sample reported losses. Almost a third had cut staff hours. But the general sentiment was that the recession had been talked up. “I blame the media,” said a North East retailer. “Many folk think we are desperate for their business and demand big discounts.” Almost 40% of survey respondents said more customers had asked for discounts but there were widespread reports of the quality end of the market holding up well and many retailers have enjoyed fewer orders at higher margins and ended up ahead. “Slashing pricings is suicide unless like certain major groups you inflate then first,” said a West Country retailer. “When times are hard, you must find ways of increasing the margin”. We asked whether suppliers had been helping in 2009 and almost 60% of retailers said suppliers had been ‘a little more helpful’ in terms of pricing during the year – although a similar figure reported that credit control had also been noticeably more aggressive.
But supplier service levels came in for some criticism and the recession appears to have kept some reps off the road. “Some reps are making less calls and one we know has been told to save fuel and visit less frequently – I won’t buy if they don’t come to see me,” said a rural retailer. An Essex retailer said: “Suppliers need to concentrate on maintaining service levels in these tough times.”
Also it was felt that bad debts among some retailers was prejudicing ‘good payers’.This comment came up unprompted from several retailers. A South Yorkshire retailer summarised it: “Suppliers should close accounts who are slow payers and should not supply them on pro forma. Suppliers should support the rest of us who do pay our bills.” Turning to 2010, we’re pleased to report that 65% of retailers expect a much better year - of those, 41% are anticipating slow, steady improvement while 24% suggested the first half would be flat but with a better second half. Only 6% expected further decline in the market.
“Many folk think we are desperate for their business” 50
January 2010
“Suppliers need to maintain service levels”
But 94% or respondents said they had no plans to increase staffing levels – a sign of a ‘wait and see’ approach to the economy.
Asked what suppliers could do to help the recovery, 44% selected ‘competitive new products’ as the main driver with only 19% favouring better pricing on existing products. 25% asked for better merchandising and sampling and, maybe surprisingly, only 12% picked easier credit terms as the issue that would make a difference in 2010.
And many in the trade are looking forward to the election! In our ‘soapbox’ section where views are unprompted, it was noticeable how many retailers blamed the Government for many of the past problems. “Gordon Brown should do the country a favour and call the election. Whichever party takes power, it will create confidence. This government is weak and unfocussed. Happier New Year!

News Raising the standard Manufacturers of market-leading flooring adhesives and floor smoothing underlayments, F. Ball and Co. Ltd., have announced the opening of a new, state-of-the-art training centre at their Cheddleton site. Representing a £1 million investment, the new training facility demonstrates F. Ball’s commitment to raising standards within the flooring industry. To mark its completion, the training centre was used to host a meeting of the Independent Floorcovering Distributors Association (IFDA), who also used the visit to present F. Ball with the association’s ‘Flooring Accessory Supplier of the Year’ Award.
Kevan Tucker, Chairman of the IFDA, presented the trophy to F. Ball Sales Director, David Hibbert, along with a cheque for £250.00 to be donated to a charity of the company’s choice. F. Ball donated the funds to The Donna Louise Hospice in Trentham, Stoke on Trent, which provides respite and end of life care for children with life limiting conditions.
Safety first with wood A new DVD aimed at keeping workers safe in the woodworking industry is available now from the Health and Safety Executive. ‘Health and Safety in the Woodworking Industry’ is aimed primarily at managers and supervisors though the disc will also be of use in training employees to raise awareness of health and safety risks in the workplace.
The DVD shows the importance of a good health and safety strategy for businesses and demonstrates the majority of woodworking machinery accidents are preventable simply by ensuring operators are properly trained and supervised.
It has sections on safe working practices, properly guarded machines, the use of safety devices on the factory floor and the numerous health hazards in the woodworking industry. The scenes on the DVD were formerly available as three separate HSE videos but have now been combined and updated to include new guidance, primarily on the risks from wood dust and how to control them. Tim Small of HSE’s manufacturing sector said: “This DVD contains vital, specialist guidance on how to keep your workforce safe from the inherent dangers of the woodworking industry.” T 0845 3450055 http://books.hse.gov.uk

Design talent competes New Design Britain at Interiors 2010 in Birmingham can be a launch pad for tomorrow's leading designers. The event takes place January 24 - 27 at the NEC Birmingham.
When it comes to training the designers of tomorrow, Britain is a worldleader. Former students from the UK's design colleges can be found in many of the 'designer companies' both here and abroad. However this rich stream of talent brings with it a problem - how does today's new designer stand out from the crowd and attract the attention of their future employer? It was in order to address this industry-wide problem that Interiors took the decision to put its New Design Britain competition, open to graduates and postgraduates, right at the heart of the event as part of its Thinking Space feature area in Hall 2. There are two main categories in the competition: Made in Britain and Designed in Britain. Each of these has four subsections: Furniture, Fabrics, Accessories and Surface Coverings.
"The buzz Thinking Space has created is almost tangible," said UBM's event director Andrew Vaughan. "New Design Britain will be there, alongside Designersblock, the seminar theatre, a collaboration between Birmingham City University and Global Color Research amongst other brand new, mustsee initiatives.” interiors is the UK's largest interiors trade event which attracted 25,000 interiors professionals in January 2009. In the past the event has been very successful at presenting a platform to bring the work of new designers to the attention of key people within the industry.

Business News Festive cheer for the flooring trade Pre-Christmas trading was reported to be strong as the CBI reported that retail sales were growing at their fastest pace for two years.
The CBI’s monthly and quarterly distributive trades survey found a balance of 13 per cent of retailers reporting higher sales compared to the same period last year – the second consecutive month of rising sales. A balance of 19 per cent said they expected sales to rise further in the remainder of the year. Durable household goods including furniture and carpets – two sectors hit hard by the drop in housing activity – were among the more promising sectors, showing growth for the second month in a row. In addition to a general strengthening of consumer confidence, the return of VAT to 17.5% at the beginning of this year was seen as a factor in motivating major purchases.
“It is reassuring that the high street has a second month of sales growth behind it” Andy Clarke, chairman of the CBI distributive trades panel, and chief operating officer of Asda, said: “It’s reassuring that the high street now has a second month of sales growth behind it, and it looks like December will be even better. A lot of retailers have suffered during 2009, and many are relieved that the year is ending on a more positive note.”
In a pointer to prospects in the first half of 2010 however, optimism among wholesalers was in shorter supply although the sector reported sales rising for the first time in more than a year. A balance of 31 per cent expected sales to fall, a balance of 41 per cent expected their employment levels to fall and a balance of 19 per cent said they expected to invest less in their businesses than they did in the past year.
Selling 100 miles of carpet a week! If you were wondering who has had a ‘good recession’, few will be surprised that Carpetright has prospered following the collapse of its major competitor Allied.
Independent retailers should look away now as Carpetright announced just before Christmas that they were selling 118 miles of 4-metre wide carpet every week in the second half of 2009! “Enough to get from here to Boston,” said Lord Harris – and he wasn’t referring to the distance from London to Lincolnshire!
In addition to the Allied factor, the company cited a recovery in housing markets in Britain and Ireland which boosted profits by 15% to £11m for the half year which ended in October. Carpetright’s margins are revealed by the comparable sales figure for the period of £258m – a 9% increase which shows the the company’s margins are tight but improving. Carpetright opened 39 new stores in the six months to the end of October but closed 18.The total store count at present is over 500.
Most of the company’s recovery came in sales of vinyl flooring and traditional carpet, with laminates and wood floor sales continuing to fall. “Laminates were a fashion, and we were doing about £25m a year but we’re now doing about £10m a year,” said Lord Harris.

Recession costs flooring £298m The recession has cost the UK Floor Coverings industry £298 million in lost profit in the last year according to new research by market analysts Plimsoll.
David Pattison, senior analyst and author of the Plimsoll Analysis – Floor Coverings, says “The recession has hit the sector hard with more than half of the companies analysed in our new report making less profit than they were a year before. The bill in lost profits stands at £298 million”.
When pressed for a reason for this collapse in the bottom line of companies throughout the market, Pattison suggests, “With demand so subdued and the resultant competition, many companies are unable to charge the price they need to make healthy profit margins. In the absence of pricing power many companies will have to make painful but necessary cutbacks in the next 12 months”. However, the burden of lost profit is not being shared equally as Pattison explains, “610 companies have bore the brunt of the downturn. These companies have seen their profit margins decimated and in the absence of a big upturn in demand will have to cut their cloth accordingly. Watch out for further job losses and closures as these companies look to claw themselves back to profit next year. If they fail to act quickly they could find themselves running out of cash”.
On the other hand, there are still companies getting it right in spite of it all, “Amazingly, there are 112 companies that have maintained or increased their profit margins in the last year. All things considered that’s a pretty good achievement. While some of these companies made cut backs to match their lower sales expectations others have managed the Holy Grail – they have grown their business and increased their profit margins in a recession. Those companies prove that an efficient business selling the right product to the right market can still succeed in the UK floor coverings industry”. The new Plimsoll Industry Analysis – Floor Coverings gives an instant performance rating on the top 1000 companies in the market. Each company has been rated as Strong, Good, Mediocre, Caution or Danger according to their latest performance. A graphical and written analysis will tell you which companies are in trouble and who is getting it right.

Debt mountain for UK exporters 2009 saw a colossal increase in the value of foreign debt being chased by UK exporters. New data from Lovetts, the law firm specialising in commercial debt recovery and litigation, has found that in the first quarter of the year, businesses were experiencing a shocking 475% increase in the value of debt from overseas customers compared to the same period in 2008. While much focus has been put on tackling late payment amongst businesses in the UK, the new data shows how exporters need to be just as vigilant when dealing with overseas customers. While Q1 saw almost a five fold increase in the value of foreign debt being chased for payment, as the year has progressed, the levels of debt have decreased, although they are still substantial increases on 2008. In Quarter 2 2009, the year on year increase in the value of overseas debt being chased had come down to 103% and in Q3 2009 it has reduced further to a 30.6% year on year rise.

OF THE TRADE
John Hopkins
Chairman, O2H2 Flooring Consultants
The main challenge today is obtaining finance and maintaining cashflow and dealing with companies who ask for more and more discounts and extended payment arrangements.
What’s your favourite flooring product?
A good quality 80/20 wool/nylon plain coloured cut-pile carpet.
Which product or product type is past its sell by date now do you think? Cheap laminate flooring.
Do people selling carpet know enough about fibre and composition?
In my experience there are too many retailers who do not understand the properties, benefits and negatives of carpet fibres and yarn blends.
If you could ask retailers to change one thing, what would it be? Invest in more staff training both in product knowledge, sales techniques and customer service.
If you could ask installers/fitters to change one thing, what would it be?
Attend training courses to maintain skills and keep up to date with new products, tools and installation techniques.
What’s the biggest difference to flooring installation in the last ten years?
The development of better tools, equipment, adhesives and double stick systems particularly in contract situations.
Is there still a skills gap in flooring installations? What skills require the most development?
There are still too many fitters who have not been trained in product knowledge and basic skills of handling and installing flooring materials. This can only be addressed by making training and certification compulsory. Hopefully this would help eliminate the ‘cowboy’ reduce complaints and improve customer satisfaction.
Are cowboy fitters still an issue for the reputation of the trade? Yes they always were and I suspect that they always will be.
from The Stocklists
In all your time in the trade, what has most surprised you? The general apathy towards training and general lack of knowledge particularly in some sectors of the retail trade.
And most disappointed you?
The demise of the once world wide excellence of the UK carpet manufacturing industry.
Is yarn technology making carpets and rugs more interesting or just more complicated?
With a good knowledge of fibres, yarn technology, dyeing and manufacturing techniques many interesting effects can be achieved. It is not rocket science just good technical and design knowledge.
Overall, how good are retailers and manufacturers at dealing with complaints?
There are a few good manufactures and retailers who deal with complaints in a professional manner. However there are too many, who possibly because of lack of technical knowledge, bury their heads in the sand and hope that the problem will go away.
“
“
What’s the key market issue/challenge today?
Is the insurance industry helping or hindering retailer/consumer relations?
This is an area fraught with difficulties. It depends largely on trust between the various parties and ensuring that any claim is justified.
Do retailers know enough to advise consumers on carpet care and maintenance?
In general NO. Once again we return to the general lack of training and product knowledge to enable sales staff to give good sound advice. For example on the correct type of suction cleaner to use on a particular construction of carpet.
If you didn’t work in this industry, what would have been your second choice career? (Should it have been!?)
My grandfather and father were specialist wire drawers, making special wire for various industries. However this was a dying art so my father would not train me in this and advised me to seek a different path hence my move into textiles. During this period I was fortunate to work part time as a Master of Ceremonies for large dances and entertainment areas. So if I could rewind the clock I would liked to have been a professional Toast Master. Saying that I have enjoyed my career in the industry particularly the many people that I have met during this time.
