Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home. THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years. Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
SAFE
DURABLE
Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer. Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly. Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites. Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Regular Maintenance Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur. Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers! Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for general household use. Although they may clean the carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet. Use only WOOLSAFE approved products WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Periodic Cleaning When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company. If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE approved products. Look for the WOOLSAFE Mark on the bottle or package. It is best to engage the services of a professional carpet & upholstery cleaning company. To get a really expert job done entrust the work to a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, have been in business for a considerable length of time, are members of one or more recognised professional trade associations related to the cleaning industry and have a reputation for top quality service. And they use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents on your wool carpets and rugs!
If you have a problem with a carpet or rug that requires an independent inspector, a network of carpet complaint investigators, trained and registered by The WOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland. WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectors have extensive experience in investigating the causes for carpet complaints based on their practical involvement with carpets and rugs over many years. They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can carry out or commission tests where required, and will provide comprehensive reports. To contact an inspector in your area call 01943 462127, email: inspector@woolsafe.org, or visit: www.woolsafe.org / Private Householder / Registered Inspectors

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING
SPROUTING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
SHEDDING The original carpet tile
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.
8
• shedding • pulled loops
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
SHADING
STATIC Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL
FLATTENING
(SEE SHADING)
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
SOILING Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or
any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Increase sales

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.floorwise.co.uk
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
www.numa-online.co.uk
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will...
• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to. Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland. A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line. As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others. Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.
Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours. Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.
the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of their product range to consumers with market-leading point-of-sale systems incorporating the latest video technology. Furlong believes in working in partnership with their customers to provide products and services that ticks all the boxes.

Rod renovation Kirstie Allsop, the TV home-decorating guru, is back on our TV screens this autumn, with a new series of the popular Kirstie’s Homemade Home and turned her attention to the transformation of a shabby Victorian hallway and staircase in a recent programme. Crusader of items which are hand-crafted or second hand, she worked wonders with solid brass Hanover stair rods from Stairrods (UK), which she contrasted with a chic, bordered runner from Crucial Trading. The programme featured Victorian town-house owners, Shaun and Gemma, who were completely overwhelmed at the thought of sorting out the hall and staircase of their three-storey home. In stepped Kirstie, with her practical no-nonsense approach to decorating, who immediately spotted the beauty of a stained glass window halfway up the stairs, and chose runner and rods to accentuate it, in so doing creating a classic look, which reflected the period feel of the house and yet appealed to its young owners. For anyone looking for inspiration the programme is proving hugely popular, and with over 2.25 million viewers the trade can hope for a rush on runners and stair rods this winter. For anyone wanting to replicate the look: Stairrods (UK) supplied solid brass, Hanover rods in polished brass. T 01207 591176

Water works for Axminster Axminster Carpets has been announced as a runner-up in the ‘Cleaner Water’ category at the inaugural Environment Agency Awards. The ‘Cleaner Water’ award recognises companies that have achieved outstanding results in preventing pollution or improving water quality in rivers, seas or lakes.

The awards were judged by a panel of environmental professionals led by the Environment Agency’s Director of Environment and Business Ed Mitchell. Among the judges were Nicci Russell, Policy Director at Waterwise, Dax Lovegrove, Head of Business & Industry Relations at WWF and David Acres, Policy & Environment Manager at EDF.
Ulster’s woolly award
In late 2009, Axminster Carpets officially unveiled a revolutionary Water Recycling Plant after an investment of some £2 million. The plant converts waste water back to a level where it can be completely reused: 95% of Axminster Carpets’ waste water, over 2 million litres per week, is piped back into the plant processes without entering the eco-system after having all the contaminants removed. The residual waste is being converted to bio-fuel with the long-term plan to use this to power the company’s lorry fleet and the manufacturing plant. “The commissioning of our water recycling plant was an ongoing part of our strategy to minimise the environmental impact of our yarn spinning and carpet manufacturing processes,” comments Josh Dutfield, Group Managing Director. “It has helped us to radically reduce our output of water with contaminants and has allowed our water use to become much more efficient, as recognised by our position as Runner Up in the Cleaner Water category.” The awards were presented at the Environment Agency’s annual conference, Environment10, where Energy Secretary Chris Huhne MP, praised the calibre of entries. Ulster Carpets have scooped the Gold Award for the Best Wool Product at the House Beautiful Awards 2010, which were recently held in the prestigious surroundings of the Royal Opera House, London. The Best Wool Product was a new category to this years awards and Ulster’s new eco range Natural Choice came out on top with the impressive panel of high profile home interest celebrities who joined forces with House Beautiful Editor Julia Goodwin to select the winners. Julia said: “The House Beautiful Awards is the red carpet event of the homes industry - honouring the best of the best. This year we received a record number of entries and the standard has been higher than ever. From storage and wallpaper to sofas and kitchens, the buys you make for your home will be with you for years. This is why the House Beautiful Awards recognise only excellence across the board.” Ulster’s Natural Choice range is made from 100% natural undyed wool and comprises a variety of textured designs inspired by nature that are complimented with a range of plains. The yarn for Natural Choice, like all of Ulster’s yarn, is manufactured at their spinning mill in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, ensuring total control over quality and long term security of supply. Composed from natural, renewable elements Natural Choice is completely recyclable and biodegradable, therefore strengthening Ulster’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Internet flooring retailer, UK Flooring Direct has been listed in The Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100, published Sunday 5th December 2010, as one of the UK’s fastest growing private companies. Ranking at 24, Warwickshire-based UK Flooring Direct has been cited by The Sunday Times as having an annual sales growth of 101.06%, making it on a par with other online-based companies in the 100 fastestgrowing UK private companies list. The Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 league table is produced by Fast Track, a leading networking company focusing on top-performing private companies and entrepreneurs. The list is a well-recognised marker of the UK’s most successful companies over the course of the last year. UK Flooring Direct joins 25 retailers on the table and is among 11 that achieve most of their sales online. The Sunday Times states that “initiatives have helped sales grow to 101% a year, from £735,000 in 2007 to £6m in 2010”, founder and ex-floor fitter Jason Ashby, explains: “I founded UK Flooring Direct in 2004 as I believed there was a clear gap in the market for a high quality online flooring retailer. We have shown steady growth over the years, but the decision to provide free sampling, a more user-friendly website and heavy SEO investment have seen us enter this prestigious listing. “I’m delighted to be with in the top 25% of the list and our entry goes to prove that despite the tough trading conditions within the flooring sector, the right approach can still reap success. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff at UK Flooring Direct who’s hard work and dedication is responsible in no small part for our position as one of the brightest private companies in the country.” T 0845 287 5623 32 January 2011

Polyflor continues to lead the way in environmental progress after all five of its Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) ranges received a positive assessment from the Building Research Establishment (BRE). Expona Design, Kudos, Bevel Line and the Camaro Flooring Collection all received BRE A+ Global certification (ENP 429) for major use areas while the Colonia Homeline range achieved an A rating for domestic use. These ratings are significant for the vinyl flooring market because it is the first time that specific LVT product ranges have been individually assessed by BRE Global. “Brands often flaunt the generic BRE ratings of their type of product but we can provide customers with a more accurate reflection of a particular product’s green credentials,” explains Simon James, Polyflor’s marketing manager. “Our LVT ranges have always been popular because of their aesthetic quality, durability and best value prices. Now they are backed by the most highly recognised environmental accreditation in the UK, so customers don’t need to compromise and are getting the complete package.” Polyflor LVT products can be recycled through the Recofloor Vinyl TakeBack Scheme, of which Polyflor is one of two founder members, to further reduce the carbon footprint of a project. Through the scheme vinyl off-cuts are recycled back into new flooring while uplifted, or end-oflife material, is used in the manufacture of traffic calming products such as traffic cones. The British Wool column Looking back...looking forward The launch of the biggest cross-industry promotional effort to raise the profile of wool in all its shapes and forms made 2010 a great year for wool. The Campaign for Wool (CfW) with its Royal Patron, HRH The Prince of Wales, certainly caught the attention of the media. Home interest magazines and national press put their forceful might behind the key messages and published many large product features over those key textile buying months of September, October and November. Editors responded with personal gravitas to make the wool message strong and stylish. These magazines had beautiful and inspirational room set images that were intended to motivate and set a wool trend. “But what is most heartening, is that they liked the story of wool and its natural beginnings. The farmer and his sheep appeals to them and their readers too,” Bridgette Kelly at the British Wool Marketing Board says. “So you had sheep peering out from the pages of Country Living, Country Homes and Interiors, Ideal Homes, House Beautiful,Your Home and many others, all bringing this unique product story to life.” On the high street and in the store, there was an amazing surge of support from all types of retailer and brands - big and small and high end to artisan and niche. Stopping the traffic on Savile Row and letting the flock of Exmoor Horn bring a sedate, somewhat surreal atmosphere to central London was a stunt that received much media attention too. And yet in reality, it was the many and varied smaller gestures that made Wool Week the event that pushed wool up the agenda. The POS branding on wool carpet in carpet stores all over the UK with the Carpet Foundation’s ‘Wool Rich’ campaign was a simple but strong effort to highlight wool in-store. Schools, craft groups and museums held events and there was a whole week of events held in the Shetland Islands focusing on their historic connection with knitting and textiles. It was clear that whilst support for wool had perhaps been a little sleepy and quiet, in 2010 it found its voice.

Naturally Green is the message that makes wool superior for carpets.
Taking wool opportunity forward...
The price of success
The opportunity for 2011 is still in the process of being unpacked, it is the Christmas gift that has not quite made it out of the box! “But what is important, is that we build on the success of the last year,” Bridgette Kelly at the BWMB said. Importantly, the trends that are set by the interior publications must be taken advantage of and carpet retailers should watch for new colours and designs and see how they can offer their customers this within their store. Several large trade exhibitions have made it clear to British Wool that they see wool carpet enjoying a genuine revival. “I talk to people from a broad cross-section of industry and within the media and there is a consensus from those that take the lead on directing the trends that the combination of wool as a natural fibre and carpet as a design feature is growing. “But the multi-capable message of wool as the carpet fibre that offers more than any other is something we need to promote as well. Trends are the perfect opportunity to sell but explaining the added-value can ensure that the customer learns and returns to buy wool carpets and rugs for their floor next time,” added Bridgette.
Higher wool prices at auction do not always go down well with industry. Success for one side often results in profit hits for another. But the reality is that higher wool prices based on demand have pushed wool yarn and wool manufactured product prices up. Securing the supply from original source – the sheep farmer and looking after our UK textile industry is vital to the prospects of the whole wool industry. Viable returns are based on wool prices going up but undoubtedly the speed of price increases over the last twelve months has posed difficulties for many,” Ian Hartley acknowledged. “These raw wool prices are governed by the market itself, which responds to demand and of course, currency fluctuations. Wool is a superior fibre with a long segregated production process and ultimately, it has to be positioned by all as something worth paying for – an investment in quality. This secures the sheep farmer and the UK textile industry which we must preserve.”

How bad do you think the coming year will be for floor retailing? I think it will be very tough, especially for those manufacturers and retailers with business infrastructures heavily geared towards a cost leadership / volume based business model. However none of us should forget that for many, adversity will also bring opportunity. Has the recession been healthy for the industry to force improvements in its effectiveness? Going back to adversity and opportunity then for some it will be a fruitful time and for others a constructive period in the reforming of their business structures / policies. However I can’t subscribe to the view that a recession can ever be healthy. Do you think there will be more casualties in the manufacturing sector this year? Are there too many people making carpet? Critical mass is everything and without doubt supply, home grown and imports, still exceeds demand. We are all looking to juggle offering the optimum in service and quality whilst still maintaining a firm hold on the solid business principles of lean manufacturing and unfortunately many of us are still failing. Possibly this is due to the age old battle of stock commitments versus service expectations, demands versus sales profile. Rather than casualties I think there is a strong possibility that strategic partnerships could be struck to take advantage of product cross platform and multi brand selling opportunities as per Headlam who are past masters in operating in this type of business. When do you expect consumers to regain their confidence? I am not personally convinced that consumers have lost their confidence rather that they are brow beaten and dispirited by the constant flow of bad news from the media and in my opinion this could reverse quickly with the first sign of positive coverage. The problem is that without doubt ‘bad news sells best, because good news is no news’ – Kirk Douglas ‘Ace in the Hole’ 1951.
“The purchase experience for the consumer can be pretty poor in comparison to other big ticket items” January 2011
Is the VAT rise going to make that much difference? Not in my opinion, + or - 2.5% or £25 in a £1,000 is not going to influence purchase that much and if it were to become an issue then I cannot imagine a retailer sacrificing a potential sale for this percentage of discount. What could make a difference is A) the loss of jobs in the public sector (our typical customer so to speak) as there is no doubt that the private sector is not yet strong enough to compensate and 2) the fuel duty / VAT impact on transport which is inflationary across all demographic profiles and business sectors. Is price winning over design/quality? Price is more influential now in all areas of purchase, whether the buyer is on a budget or not. However for those that want differentiation and /or ‘the best’ and can afford it, then price is still secondary to the demand. How big a problem is the price of wool at the moment? In considering the pressure of price inflation and the need for critical mass this is a big problem at the moment and potentially an issue that we will need to get used to. The strain on natural resource commodities such as cotton and wool is immense at the moment in both availability of raw material and price control, especially with home grown demand from fast emerging markets such as the Middle East, China and India being so strong. There is no doubt that this trend could leave a long lasting impact on how carpet is priced and sold and the features and benefits promoted when defining the sale.

Was 2010 better than you thought? Yes it was. In difficult times we have managed to continue our growth pattern, consolidate our trading partnerships and enhance our brand offer with our Drury Lane acquisition.
What do manufacturers need to do better in 2011? Remain innovative and creative, manage stocks effectively, improve service, realise synergistic partnerships, gain better control of selling vehicles and above all ‘retain cash’! What do retailers need to do better in 2011? More of the same, plus considering how to continually improve the purchase experience for the consumer which at the moment is pretty poor in comparison to other big ticket items. What’s the smartest change you’ve made to the business in the last couple of years? Listening to the consumer first, considering fashion trends other than those dictated by textiles when being creative and reforming strong partnerships with industry specialists like Wools of New Zealand.

DOMOTEX 2010 FLOORING’S FESTIVAL OF DESIGN Lasting four days, embracing 13 halls and boasting some 1,400 exhibitors from across the world, Domotex will once again be Europe’s biggest event in the business year in 2011 – and a major driver of sales growth, say organisers. The halls in Hannover open January 15 to 18 under the banner ‘The Magic of Flooring’ and are set to deliver a showcase of trend, fashion and design across all categories in floorcovering. Key players include leading names in the UK industry such Associated Weavers, Edel Telenzo, Mohawk, Carpenter, F Ball, Ball & Young, Balta, Lano, IVC, Balterio, Interfloor, Tapibel, Wools of New Zealand and SuperClick. “No other show will give you such a comprehensive overview of the market or so many opportunities to extend your range of contacts and cultivate existing connections,” says organiser Stephan Ph. Kühne of Deutsche Messe AG. “Whether you are looking for new suppliers, searching for specific products or hoping to learn more about your special area of expertise at the many themed presentations, the world's leading trade fair for floor coverings is an absolute “must” for your diary,” he said. Last year, more than 38,000 flooring people made the visit to Hannover and surveys after the event reported that 96% rate the show as good or better. Domotex represents the global business platform for the international floor covering industry. 82 percent of exhibitors and 56 percent of visitors come from outside Germany. The strong business focus in Hannover is underscored by the high percentage of decision-makers among visitors. Some 71 percent of all visitors come from top management echelons and 89 percent are involved in purchasing decisions at their companies.

Two of the highlights on the Balta Broadloom stand will certainly be 'Heartbreaker', a more trendy Stainsafe® PP/PES shaggy with a refined texture and 'Sandringham Wilton' a brand new traditionally woven Wilton. Impressio, the new collection from Balterio, capitalises on the trend for wider planks. On a royal plank format of 1261 x 244 mm, this collection features six contemporary designs finished with a V-groove on the long side. The new Stretto collection offers just the opposite, through 12 designs on a narrow plank format of 1263 x 134 mm. The subtle foursided micro V-groove confers a chic and authentic look onto the narrow plank. The successful Magnitude collection with the original ChromeZone technology and slightly shining wood grain, is expanded with four pretty and modern designs, bringing the total number of designs for Magnitude to 12. “With the Industry now having only one show in the Autumn we have a great opportunity to consolidate on last year’s strengths,” says show organizer David Wildman. “I’m pleased to report that we have already contracted over 75% of the total space booked last year and with over 80 companies already on our lists we are very confident that we will stage another busy show,” he said. The Harrogate Flooring Show is ready to welcome back top companies including Associated Weavers, Abingdon, Ardex, Cormar, Lano, Ball and Young, F. Ball, Carpenter, Rama, OCR, Mastercraft Rugs, Furlong, Mercado and many more. New exhibitors announced so far will include IVC Moduleo, a top quality LVT product and Mapei. a major international company who will bring even more strength to the show’s growing contract flooring section. A key vote of confidence in the event has come from those companies who have asked to increased their floor space. Karndean, Mohawk and Lifestyle Floors are among those exhibitors planning much bigger stands for 2011. The demonstration and seminars at the Harrogate Show proved a great attraction and organisers aim to expand these activites in September. “Everyone seemed absolutely delighted with all of the demos carried out by the CFA/ FITA/NICF and we are pleased to confirm that we will build again the special demo zone structure and look forward to running more educational demonstrations,” said David Wildman. “The seminars did so well that we will look to expand this added extra attraction for the event by using the Sunday as well to host more seminars,” he said. The Wool Benefits Series from Wools of New Zealand
Natural Colour Natural Beauty, a key benefit of New Zealand wool, underlines why the natural whiteness of the wool makes it the natural choice for dyeing all shades in the colour spectrum, perfect for the most stylish and fashionable interiors. I
I
Shades of purple are THE LOOK for winter – from damson, grape and fig to eclectic lavenders, the key influence being the greyed-off dusty depth of hue often associated with the skin of the fruit or seed. Colours should be rich and deep or slightly sludgy, but not regal. This purple colourbank works beautifully with the ‘greige’ tones providing you work with the right degree of tonality – containing the same requisite tones of grey or pink. Celadon green, denim blues and teal are other fashionable colours which harmonise beautifully with the purples and grey tones.
Viewing the floor as a canvas is a great way to inject individual creativity into the home, and carpets can make as much of an impact as any other decorating medium – not only embellishing a room but also making a focal statement. With winter well and truly here, cocooning and warmth are foremost considerations for the home. The revival of interest in Arts and Crafts and the UK’s wool heritage underlines the key role carpet can play in our homes – not only creatively but in an insulating and comforting way. Colour plays a significant role in our subconscious and particularly in the winter months. The association of colour with warmth and comfort, ie. hot coffee, chocolate, home-made jam, mulled wine and milk puddings creates a sense of cosiness and well-being. Based on the above, colours to consider for winter 2011 include: I
I
Shades of white from the cooler grey tones to the warmer creamier hues work particularly well when combined with shades of black – ink, damson, claret, evergreen, mahogany and blackberry to make a monochromatic yet smart and chic statement. Shades of grey and shades of beige are a natural option. However, the combined shade of ‘greige’ is definitely the NEW neutral shade. A leaning towards the warm or cool tonality depends on the influence of grey or pink in the dye. ‘Greige’ lends itself perfectly to texture – deep pile and chunky ribs – just the thing for the winter months. Carpets identify perfectly with this trend – creating interesting and lush floorcoverings to sink into.

53% less landfill Efforts by Carpet Recycling UK to divert carpet waste from landfill have shown dramatic success over the past three years with more than half of the industry’s total waste tonnage recycled in 2009. UK-based carpet manufacturing members of CRUK diverted 2,760 tonnes of the 5,197 total waste tonnages from landfill – a 53% diversion rate. This is far higher than the average carpet industry landfill diversion rate of just 6% in 2009. Estimates for 2010 indicate an increase in landfill diversion to more than 4,000 tonnes. This represents an increase in the diversion rate to 64% from a total carpet waste figure of 6,265. Managed by Axion Consulting, Carpet Recycling UK is an industry-backed association for the research and development of new methods for recycling and reusing carpet. Axion’s CRUK Co-ordinator Jane Gardner comments: “These figures are a tremendous achievement, showing that UK carpet manufacturers who are CRUK members greatly surpassed the sector’s average landfill diversion rate of 6% in 2009.” Landfill diversion opportunities created by Carpet Recycling UK for its overall 47-strong membership include outlets ranging across fibre recovery for felts, equestrian surface mixtures, plastic compounding and energy recovery. Two top performing CRUK members are Penthouse Carpets and Brockway Carpets who estimate diversion rates of 83% for 2010, up from zero and 17% respectively in 2008. T 0161 426 7731

Recofloor wins on waste Recofloor’s unique, innovative and sustainable approach to the collection and recycling of waste vinyl flooring triumphed at the 2010 Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) Awards for Environmental Excellence. The UK’s first vinyl flooring recycling scheme won the highly-contested Innovative Practice in Waste Management and Resource Recovery (SME) category, just two months after celebrating the first anniversary of its nationwide launch in September. Recofloor was founded by leading flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor to tackle growing volumes of waste vinyl sent to landfill.
Matthew Charlton, of resource recovery specialist Axion Consulting that manages Recofloor, accepted the trophy from journalist and newsreader Kate Silverton and David Thomas, Business Development Manager at BAM Nuttall
The award coincided with November’s record-breaking month of 20.25 tonnes collected in the first three weeks alone. Local authorities, distributors and contractors all benefit in terms of saving valuable landfill space, reduced disposal costs and accentuating ‘green’ credentials. Recofloor’s Project Manager, Jane Gardner said: “It’s a fantastic honour for Recofloor to be recognised in an extremely-competitive category which attracted a large number of quality entries. Naturally we are absolutely delighted that the hard work of everyone involved in this successful scheme has been rewarded with this prestigious award.” The Recofloor scheme is a unique example of two major competitors working collaboratively to promote the sustainability of their product - a major achievement and an important step for the vinyl flooring sector as a whole. Vinyl flooring waste is diverted from landfill and recycled back into new flooring products as well as traffic management equipment such as cones and sign bases. Around 175 tonnes is projected for the coming year, representing a 15% increase year on year. T 0161 355 7618

Flooring at the heart of furnishing The National Exhibition Centre puts flooring at the heart of the interiors industry between January 23 to 26 with the launch of an event that promises a new audience for the business.
Highlights of interiors 2011 New Design Britain awards including the Barjis Rug Design. A week long trip to Bejing, China and an open paid internship with Barjis are the main prizes awarded to the creator of a winning 100% wool, hand-tufted rug design.
Interiors 2011 is the UK’s top event for furnishing with an established track record of attracting 25,000 visitors to the Birmingham venue and this year is a first for flooring with a section of Hall 2 allocated to the industry.
Trend forecasting in partnership with the Birmingham City University’s Trend Project engages with the Institute of Art & Design students with associated academics and indusutry experts. The result is an exhibition featuring 4 pavilions which interpret the trends and provides new inspiration for interior, product and textile design.
The event already encompasses five halls split by furniture, soft furnishing, bedding, upholstery, traditional and modern interiors and lighting so the involvement of floorcovering is a logical extension to the portfolio. More than fifty floorcovering companies are exhibiting. In the carpet sector, this includes Furlong Flooring, Blenheim Carpets, Brockway, Bond Worth, Crucial Trading, KJC, MCD and Mercado. There is strong representation for rugs with exhibitors including: Alpaca, Mastercraft, Oriental and Plantation. In the non textile area, there is Novostrat Underlay, V4 woodflooring, Millennium Hardwoods and C&H Distribution.
Seminar programme includes sessions on e-commerce, the ‘future of shopping’, colour trends, ‘eco-chic’, store presentation and interior design.
“We have had good support for the event and it is an exciting opportunity for us and the industry,” says Andrew Vaughan, director of organisers UBM. “Visitors will be able to cross the halls to visit the flooring section and there is excellent potential for crossover within the interiors industry.”
Flooring reception to welcome the new flooring section to interiors 2011 – the show organisers and flooring exhibitors will put on complimentary drinks from 4-5pm on Monday 24th January in Hall 2. Refreshments will be available to flooring companies and clients.
The event promises a new audience on two fronts. Geographically, the Birmingham venue should attract visitors who are prepared to travel further North to the Harrogate Flooring Show. But more interesting for exhibitiors is the large number of interiors specialists, designers, architects and specifiers that the event attracts. Flooring retailers who visit will get the chance to look across a broad spectrum on interiors businesses to identify trends and ideas in flooringcovering and beyond.

Polyprop price hike
Banks shy of flooring risk
Polypropylene carpet prices are set to rise by up to 7% as raw material prices go through the roof, says the UK’s biggest retailer Carpetright.
The floorcoverings industry is bemoaning the scarcity of bank lending to businesses but market analysts Plimsoll argue that the banks are right – many companies in the market are just not worth the risk.
The rise, expected in the first quarter of 2011, reflects a cost increase in polypropylene to approximately £1,200 per ton from £740 per ton in 2009, says the company. “Everyone has got inflation going on,” said Lord Harris in a report on half year performance last month. “I think that carpets will be up 6 to 7 % in February, March and April. That will not be because of VAT, it will be because of the increase in raw materials.” Carpetright, who run over 700 stores in the UK and Europe, were reporting a 28% fall in half-year underlying profits to £10m on sales which were 4% down to £248m. Commenting on the prospects for 2011, Lord Harris added: “I think it is going to be a difficult year. The housing market is not going great and we also have the public sector cuts.” Add to increased wool prices, carpet inflation is set to out-perform the retail average. 54 January 2011
Recent high profile failures in other sectors such as the travel and construction sectors show the danger of operating on micro profit margins and the same thing could be heading to the floor coverings industry in 2011. 657 companies in the market exist on low profit margins of less than 1.5% with 457 of these making a loss. Any bump in the road will be enough to see them fail because they cannot rely on cheap credit to see them through anymore, says Plimsoll. Of course, there are some perfectly good companies being turned down and it is essential that banks should play their part in getting business moving again. However, nobody should blame them for refusing credit to companies that might not be able to pay it back. It also seems that debt levels have little to do with the ability to secure funding. Even companies with minimal or no debt are struggling to get credit if they have thin margins. There is simply deemed to be too much risk attached. T 01642 626400

a Sustainable future
Tarkett pioneered floor recycling back in the 1950’s and continues to lead the field, diverting over 77,000 tonnes of waste from landfill in 2009. Six recycling centres are at the heart of the Tarkett ReUse programme. ReUse is our terminology for recycling, where post-installation vinyl waste is reformulated and then manufactured back into new flooring. ReUse means just that, without any ambiguity regarding what actually happens to recyclates. New product development promotes the use of natural, renewable materials including sustainably sourced wooden floors; linoleum made from sawdust, linseed oil and jute; and the latest innovation, iQ Natural, which is made from 75% natural or renewable raw materials. Tarkett’s PUR treatments are also constantly being enhanced to minimise the use of energy, water and detergents needed for cleaning. Tarkett products also meet the generic requirements for the highest BRE ratings for environmental performance in major use areas within the healthcare and education sectors. For a vast product range and an unrivalled depth of knowledge and experience, choose Tarkett for the Ultimate Flooring Experience. www.tarkett.com from The Stocklists

All about oak Lamin8 Vintage Oak from Kenton Floors
Although advances in technology has vastly increased the choice of finishes available for laminate flooring, the UK's favourite remains that of oak. This is not as mundane as it seems, however, as suppliers have introduced a number of effects to give their product increased competitive edge. Oak Bretagne from Faus is one example of this, incorporating marquetry design within its Wideplank system that allows the floor to be laid using the 'plank within a plank' concept (120cm x 140cm), eliminating visual linear joint patterns and allowing a more efficient installation. The 8mm thick flooring is designed to give additional floor stability and, when combined with high durability of the product, allows the company to provide a 25 year guarantee. The patented Faus embossing technique has also been developed to create the Realfeel visual and tactile effect. Further authenticity is also provided by the patented Microbevel, giving additional emphasis to the plank strips. Another option is Lamin8 from Kenton Floors, which includes Vintage Oak among its choice of designs. The company has developed its Woodpecker range of flooring, which incorporates Lamin8, to provide an alternative choice Oak Bretagne from Faus
from the leading brands. This provides retailers with the option of improved margin, says Kenton Floors, when compared to brands that have reached the point of saturation coverage. Lamin8 includes a wide range of colours in 7, 8 and 12mm thickness in a variety of widths and styles, produced to AC5 heavy commercial rating. The company states consumers like the heavier feel of the product when comparing it to real wood alternatives. Parquet Palazzo from Quick-Step recently impressed the judges in the House Beautiful Awards, where it won the Gold award in the Best Flooring category. The judging panel included Jeff Banks, Kelly Hopen and House Beautiful editor Julia Goodwin, who chose the product over nominations from other leading brands. Quick-Step international communications and sponsorship manager, Philiep Caryn attended the ceremony: 'The House Beautiful Awards are always hotly contested and they are regarded as some of the finest in the home interest market. It is an absolute delight to be on the same plane as Gold winners such as well known international brand names Sandersons, Bosch, NEFF, The Conran Shop.' The ceremony attracted more than 300 guests and saw on stage appearances from Jeff Banks, Oliver Heath, Sophie Conran and Tommy Walsh and was held at London's Royal Opera House. Pergo has produced luxury laminate flooring for more than 30 years and states that natural oak has been one of its most popular designs. It offers over 90 oak designs varying from light to dark. The popularity of oak is due to its aspirational, clean, fuss-free aesthetic, allowing the wood to complement and blend with a multitude of interior designs, says the company.

ws by Dennis Flower Survey It has taken oak to a new dimension by using a variety of stain and polish effects, as well as a distressed look. Bevelled edges also emphasise each plank. The company has recently introduced Pergo Vinyl, which contains 12 designs inspired by oak. Egger has launched its Emotion laminate range for 2011, which comes with a new brochure and collection case. The new range includes numerous decors designed to allow fabricators to exploit their skills. Having identified the value that customers place on the skills and experience of professionals, it decided to redesign the consulting tools available for fabricators. 'We got our distributor and fabricator partners intensively involved in the further development of the Emotion collection in the course of this project, to meet their needs and requirements even better than before,' said Michael Gerbl, Egger's director of marketing and product management. 'In addition to professional installation, the key service offered by interior decorators and flooring installers is expert advice, which harbours tremendous advantages for the customer.'
