Look out for

Vivendi in 2017

a year!

And 2017 is looking even better still With hardly a pause to draw breath, our exciting product developments for 2017 are already well under way. Keep a lookout for news on these pages throughout the year. Just as our range is constantly improving, we’ve now made substantial investments in our logistics to ensure that rolls and cuts are delivered within five days. Our transport fleet has been increased by 35 vehicles and in the UK our local distribution partner has also added eight new vehicles to make sure we keep up with demand. In effect, all UK postcodes are now enjoying two deliveries a week. This all makes your fitting planning easier, with happy customers who don’t have to wait so long for their dream carpets to be delivered.

Ring in the New Year Seeing is believing! If you want proof of all our 2016 achievements, as well as advance news of the fantastic selection of products we are planning for 2017, weave your way across to us at the Furniture Show. We guarantee you’ll get a friendly welcome at Stand FS5 in Hall 2. Last year there was an enormous interest in Associated Weavers’ products. This year, with even more on offer, we expect many more people to warm to our comprehensive range of superior carpeting solutions.

StYL´it FroM EArtHWErKS – tHE HErriNGBoNE Classic or modern: Timeless and classic, herringbone is in demand again, and now with modern colors and finishes! Styl’iT from EarthWerks is the perfect way to create the archetypal grace of a parquet floor in your home, with the stylish and luxurious patterns of herringbone (or bâtons rompus, which translates as broken sticks). Styl’iT fashions the perfect contemporary look of elegance. This repeated, geometric pattern is composed of pieces of wood of equal size arranged in a zig-zag pattern. The planks are cut in perfect rectangles and then staggered slightly, so the end of one plank meets the side of another. Using 14 chic and refined wood colours from the EarthWerks collection, Styl’iT offers a textural warmth that balances the authenticity of a real wood floor with the unique flexibility of a luxury vinyl plank. Styl’iT brings unrivalled harmony between nature and design, and in adopting an 8.5cm x 51cm or 8.8 x44 cm stave size, it also offers a greater variation in installation.

Carpet&FlooringReview

Carpet&FlooringReview Doing a runner

Homeowners can now coordinate carpet and rug styling with the unique Rugs and Runners concept from Edel Telenzo.

There is now a great opportunity to select the colourway of a favoured Edel Telenzo carpet, and introduce it into a rug with dimensions and bordering options almost unlimited. Run the stripe of Bakerloo or Barbican up stairs, then take the coordinating style and create a rug or runner for an accompanying hallway or landing. There’s never been a service quite like Rugs and Runners from Edel Telenzo. In the past, homeowners have been restricted to tenuous colour matches, but now exactly the same hue can be used within wall-to-wall and rug choices. Remarkably, the Rugs & Runners concept allows homeowners to use absolutely any Edel Telenzo broadloom design, as Mark Rooney, UK sales director, UK, explains: “Rugs and Runners is a really pioneering concept from Edel Telenzo, and the positive feedback from retailers and homeowners is already rolling in. We expect this to continue into the early months of 2017 and beyond, as store owners present customers with a fabulously bespoke rugmaking service, where the styling of a rug can blend seamlessly with the carpet found beneath or in close proximity.” Each beautiful design is produced in a high quality wool or woolblend, meaning there’s never been a better time to introduce customers to Edel Telenzo and its personal approach to rug craft. Simply select a design from Edel Telenzo’s broadloom portfolio, choose the dimensions to fit your space, then look to one of the brand’s 88 different edging options. These span leather, felt, cotton and linen materials, in 1cm and 5cm widths, a fitting way to cap such an exclusive process. The Rugs and Runners concept is now available to present in a space-saving box, helping retailers through its reduced in-store footprint. Customers are guaranteed to take an instant shine to this striking point-of-sale, the Rugs and Runners box showcasing a spectrum of design and border combinations. New look loop

The Avebury wool loop pile collection from Cormar Carpets has been updated with a new textured design, new colour choices and a selection of complementary stripes.

The new look range, already renowned for its coordinating plains and stripes, now offers four tonal striped designs and eight stylish plains in either a neat level loop or the new textured loop pile. Made from 100% pure New Zealand Wool in a quality resilient three ply yarn, Avebury’s new colour palette reflects today’s trends with a mix of natural and grey shades such as Patney Pewter and Tisbury Tarn. The New Zealand Fernmark branded range comes in four and five metre widths that can be teamed together to accommodate the trend for a streamlined look in the home. Said David Cormack, marketing director at Cormar Carpets: “Neutrals and greys are still very much the shades of choice when it comes to carpet as they offer an easy neutral canvas. Avebury offers three different looks that work together yet are still within the confines of an ‘easy to decorate with’ colour palette.” All Cormar’s loop pile, wool twist and easy clean polypropylene ranges are produced on site at its Lancashire mills and distributed in the UK and Eire via its own delivery fleet. NEWS

Skip the skip

Pictured are Karl Turner (left) and Ron Brown (right)

H Mears Ltd are one of the latest flooring companies to install a Kenburn Carpet Crusher in order to recycle their carpet and underlay waste.

Founded in Preston in 1802 the sixth generation family run company have provided excellent customer service for well over 200 years which includes the uplifting and removal of their customers’ old carpet and underlay waste. Marc Mears comments: “With our skip costs continuing to rise year on year we needed to find a more cost effective and environmentally friendly solution for our waste. Having read about the successes of other carpet retailers using a carpet crusher we contacted Kenburn who not only supply the machines but also provide the logistic advice to have the waste collected and recycled. “All our carpet and underlay waste, new and post-consumer is mixed together and compacted and used as a fuel for ‘waste to energy’,” he said, “and not only are we now diverting our recyclable waste from landfill we¹re also at the same time reducing our waste management costs as it costs less to recycle carpet waste than it does to send it to landfill.” T 01727 844988

Fading in

The Fading World collection is well deserving of its eminent reputation, homeowners now able to enjoy its two new rug designs, Generation and Agra Sur, as Louis de Poortere makes updates for 2017. These beautiful options are ideal for adding extra design interest underfoot, as Alan Russell, UK Sales Director, Louis de Poortere, explains: “The new year sees Fading World expanded to make it a more diverse range than ever before, with two designs - Generation and Agra Sur - introduced in a 100% cotton flatweave. These fresh looks ensure the Fading World collection offers something for everyone, an unbeatable combination of highest quality materials and versatile styling.” Generation incorporates the familiar Fading World medallion but in a host of vibrant colourways, including Pear Cream, Raspberry Cream and Yuzu Cream. These hues echo the disruptive events of the 60s, when an upcoming generation began to cause problems for the establishment. With sections of the rug’s design erased for further intrigue, fans of hard-hitting style need look no further than this bold reinterpretation of an ancient classic. Agra Sur, meanwhile, pays homage to the brand’s vintage roots through multiple layers of distressed texture. Available in five shades, this understated design is interspersed with flashes of accent colour, keeping the eye guessing as it scans from one area of the rug to the next. Fading World’s Generation and Agra Sur designs are available in eight stock sizes to suit any space, and arrive with a high quality anti-slip backing. This delightful duo make the most of over a century of skill and craftsmanship, ensuring Fading World remains a favourite among designers, specifiers and homeowners alike. SPECIAL EDITORIAL FEATURE

A fresh approach to underlay

QA launches new carpet underlay that enhances air quality

“As soon as you see the product, you can tell it’s different and that’s a great starting point for a discussion with consumers to ensure they have an incentive to upgrade their underlay every time they buy carpet.”

100% Natural Product

Real Underfoot Comfort

Enhanced Air Quality

Next Generation Natural Underlay Breathe is a breath of fresh air for homeowners! This innovative new underlay product caught the imagination of visitors to the Flooring Show in Harrogate when QA launched it in September.

T

What’s different about Breathe? - well, just about everything! It’s made from wood fibres, it cuts very easily, and it has a unique performance benefit in acting as an air filter in draughty homes. Taking those topics in turn, Breathe is made in Germany from 97% sawmill waste from sustainable sources and is therefore fully biodegradable - so its environmental credentials are impeccable. The production process results in a luxury underlay that’s very fitter friendly. It has a textile feel that looks and handles like a felt underlay - so it’s pleasant to install (it weighs about the same as PU products) and especially easy to cut for fitting. The composition is very consistent with no variations in density (a.k.a. lumps!) and is very stable as it cannot stretch. Unlike a PU underlay, it doesn’t trap the moisture which can cause a build-up of damp and mould.

11

But the eye-catching domestic attribute of Breathe is its ability to improve indoor air quality. The natural wood fibres have been tested to filter 95% of dust particles that pass through it - a major benefit to allergy sufferers.

16:54

“Breathe has a very powerful story to tell to consumers which adds real value,” says QA. “There is nothing else like it out there and it really does contribute to better air quality in the home. And it’s a great underlay anyhow!” In terms of comfort, Breathe is similar to a higher end PU underlay. It is suitable for luxury use and can be used throughout any room of the house. QA have carried out extensive wear testing to prove its performance and are confident in rating it for heavy traffic areas. It can be used with underfloor heating.

QA has commissioned a superb 3-minute video for Breathe that is on YouTube and the company website so that retailers can use this as a resource to let consumers discover its benefits. The presentation also has a section with master fitter Brian King showing the ease of installtion. Search on “Breathe Underlay”

“We’re delighted with the reaction we’ve had to the product from retailers,” says QA. “As soon as you see the product, you can tell it’s different and that’s a great starting point for a discussion with consumers to ensure they have an incentive to upgrade their underlay every time they buy carpet.”

Icon - it’s official!

Producer of highest quality cork floor and wall coverings, Granorte, begins the year in award-winning fashion with its Vita Décor collection recognised at the Iconic Awards 2017. Vita Décor, and its intricate mosaic tile-inspired cork floors, fought off stiff competition to be named ‘Best of Best’ in the Interior Innovation category, a shortlist introduced to discover and distinguish creativity in interior design. This is predictably a highly populated category, making Vita Décor’s achievement all the more commendable, as Paulo Rocha, Granorte, explains: “It feels great to be recognised at the 2017 Iconic Awards, this is a fantastic vehicle for communicating the quality and design standards held by everybody at Granorte. Being shortlisted is an honour, but to be named ‘Best of Best’ shows just how much effort has been put into developing Vita Décor, one of the most design-led cork floors available on the market today.” When Vita Décor’s credentials are considered, it is perhaps of little surprise that judging panels across Europe have opted to sit up and take notice. Vita Décor may take a novel design approach, but as a cork engineered board, it holds a host of practical qualities, too. These are typical of the Granorte brand, with thermal, acoustic and sustainable benefits introduced to both domestic and commercial locations. As a result of being recognised at the Iconic Awards, Vita Décor will now be showcased at PASSAGEN, Germany’s largest design event. This caps a successful 12 months for Granorte, with Vita Décor also picking up a Silver Award at 2016’s House Beautiful Awards in London. T 01785 711131 www.granorte.co.uk

Rug recognition

Flair Rugs was delighted to be recognised at the 2016 Midlands Family Business Awards, a prestige event bringing together a host of like-minded businesses and business leaders to celebrate their collective successes in the year just gone.

Flair fought off stiff competition to be listed as ‘Highly Commended’ in the Family Business of the Year category, a shortlist holding a number of names prevalent on the region’s business scene. The result has certainly consolidated Flair’s position as one such name, and the awards, held in the University of Birmingham’s Great Hall, further enhance the company’s growing reputation and profile within the UK rug sector. These awards were first introduced to showcase the achievements of family businesses and their leaders, giving the Midlands’ best run and most innovative family organisations a chance to shine. Following the host of improvements made to Flair’s product portfolio and service offering throughout the last 12 months, it is therefore perhaps of little surprise that the brand’s name was read out when the Family Business of the Year category came around. Despite continued growth in size, sales and colleague numbers, Flair has always stayed true to its values as a business that was created from scratch some 32 years ago. Flair holds on to its family-driven roots with a tight grasp, refusing to let them slip despite operations expanding at a significant rate.

The award was received by Flair MD Neel Shah (right)

Gareth Davies, Sales and Marketing Director, comments: “It’s a privilege to be listed as ‘Highly Commended’ in the Family Business of the Year category and we’d like to thank the judges for recognising the good work carried out at Flair. We know how intensive the judging process is, with visits and face-to-face interviews taking place with all relevant parties, so it’s great to think the panel were impressed with what they saw. The whole Flair family deserves credit for an excellent year culminating in this award, and we now look forward to an exciting 2017.” T 01457 850660 www.flairrugs.com

NEWS More dense, less expense

floorwise has added two High Density underlays to its extensive product offering in Style and Panache. These luxury rated qualities are packed full of the expertise and know-how that have helped cement the brand as one of the country’s premier underlay suppliers.

“We’re delighted to present installers with our latest in underlay, taking the far-reaching floorwise portfolio to new levels,” explains Richard Bailey, Managing Director. “Style (8mm) and Panache (10mm) both make for a versatile choice, and through their hardwearing resilience are suitable for use in any room of the home. Panache is particularly suited to bedrooms and living rooms, with extra cushioning comfort provided. “Whatever the choice, the installer is guaranteed exceptional value resulting from the use of highest quality materials and processes. These underlays ensure performance requirements are met, and in many cases exceeded, with a higher density that means better long term recovery.” Both Style and Panache help to reduce the impact of high footfall that a carpet endures, prolonging life and helping to absorb signs of wear. Style and Panache also bring warmth and comfort, while efficiently absorbing sound in busy family homes.

Divine intervention

As part of Lano Carpets’ commitment to delivering the very best in carpet styles, Divine, an established high street favourite, has undergone a revamp.

Falling under the Essenz brand portfolio, new Divine is an impressive 75oz luxury Saxony, available in 12 hues, each meticulously selected from the best-selling shades in the popular Startwist and Heathertwist collections to guarantee its commercial appeal.

Also upgraded for Autumn 2016 are Traffic (9mm) and Maxi (11mm) underlays, with a new improved specification that delivers much better performance. Traffic and Maxi now hold an Enhanced High Density construction that includes 30% more foam to combat high levels of traffic, and like Style and Panache, offer the end user warmth, comfort and sound reduction. These new underlays are available from floorwise distributors right across the UK and Ireland. T 01509 673974 www.floorwise.co.uk

Birger Karlsson, UK & Ireland Sales Director, comments: “At Lano Carpets we consistently strive to provide retail partners and consumers alike with the very best in carpet. This commitment stretches across all we do, from first-class customer service to the manufacture of carpet that has the widest appeal. It is this ethos that has brought about the improvements to our Divine collection. “The popularity of Divine has been high for many years, but we wanted to guarantee its long-term attraction. It is for this reason we have chosen to refresh the colour palette in line with today’s trends. Furthermore, to use the latest in yarn technology was an easy decision to make, as homeowners increasingly look for a carpet that packs style and substance in equal measure.” Divine Twist is a made using 2-ply Lanoset polypropylene, which allows it to boast an enviable list of credentials. Bleach cleanable, the 12 of-the-moment colourways are available with a 10-year stain and 15-year wear warranty and come in 4m and 5m widths. Park Lane performance

A range of high performance products from F. Ball and Co Ltd., the UK’s leading manufacturer of floor preparation products, have been used in the refurbishment of Grosvenor House; the 5-star luxury hotel on Park Lane, London. Styccobond F3 and Styccobond F40 flooring adhesives were used in different locations throughout the ballroom and adjoining corridors to adhere new luxury Axminster carpet floorcoverings. By using high performance, market leading products, contractors were able to achieve the perfect finish required for such an illustrious hotel. Flooring contractors from Welwyn Design were called to the hotel after the proprietors decided that the main ballroom and the corridors leading to it were in need of refurbishment. On arriving at the hotel, the contractors found that the carpet floorcoverings had already been removed, as refurbishment work was already underway at the hotel. The concrete subfloors were dry, clean and in good condition, so there was no need to install a smoothing underlayment prior to the installation of the new floorcoverings. As the areas being re-fitted receive a significant amount of foot-traffic all year round, it was crucial that the installation was both quick and durable. Once the subfloors had been prepared, contractors from Welwyn Design applied Styccobond F40 to the subfloor to create a release bond for the new installation. Once the adhesive had dried to a tacky coating, the contractors installed a new underlay to protect the carpet and provide added comfort. Styccobond F3 was then used to permanently bond the new 12-row Axminster carpet throughout the 4,000m2 area. Styccobond F3 is a water-based rubber/resin flooring adhesive that has excellent wet grab. It rapidly builds up strength, and is protected against bio-degradation. T 01583 361633 www.f-ball.co.uk

NEWS Acoustic academy

GEMS Twickenham Primary Academy is the proud recipient of new cushion flooring from Itec floors, with acoustic and safety products introduced for the perfect combination of design and performance underfoot.

Working with contractors City Axis, over 700m2 of flooring was specified for installation throughout the school’s key areas. Acoustic flooring, namely Optimise 50 in its Rochas 698 design, was selected for hallway, dining room and classroom spaces, providing the necessary sound-reducing qualities in the face of heavy footfall. Meanwhile,Taxi Black safety flooring was order of the day in the bathrooms and cleaner stores, with slip resistance imperative. City Axis worked closely with Pippa Hogg-Andrews, Principal at GEMS Twickenham, who explains: “Flooring was a key component in our new design schemes, as we looked to bring our interiors in line with the 21st century and our fresh, innovative way of thinking. We opted for grey and black flooring to match the school’s colour scheme. We also required a flooring that would retain its good looks over time, while being easy to maintain, and we are delighted with the outcome, receiving positive responses from pupils and parents alike”. Itec’s flexible product portfolio allowed City Axis to specify both acoustic and safety flooring from a single source, “We’ve been using Itec products in schools for over three years now, and the results really do speak for themselves,” comments Mike Lawless, Managing Director at Lawless Flooring Ltd, the company tasked with the installation. 0800 032 3970 www.itecfloors.co.uk

BUSINESS NEWS How was it for you? Readers respond on sales trends in 2016 2016 was a “happy old year” for many retailers with two-thirds of those responding to our survey saying the last quarter of 2016 met or exceeded their expectations for sales with 26% report a “much better” performance. For the year as a whole, 44% said sales were better than 2015 with 26% reporting a flat performance and 30% reporting reduced sales. While a surprisingly high 73% of retailers said they had increased prices, the majority said their margins had not really increased over the year. Nearly two-thirds of retailers say they plan to increase prices in 2017. Asked about trends over the last year, many commented on a resurgence in LVT sales (26% reported growth in this business) and the recovery of interest in wool. 41% said the boom in the soft sector of synthetic fibres had increased sales order values. Enthusiasm to buy British is also on the increase say some. Price hikes from suppliers came in for some criticism with 32% describing the rises as excessive or “opportunistic”, citing the Brexit effect, but overall around half our readers considered the change “reasonable.” But the biggest single criticism of 2016 that came out of our survey was, again, the perception among retailers that many suppliers will sell to anyone and everyone. A typical comment was: “We’re aghast that suppliers persist in selling to individuals who trade from a Facebook page, with only a council lock-up, and we see the same products getting delivered to these traders on the same lorry that delivers to us!” say 2016 met or exceeded expectations

The battle of Brexit The industry squares up in a fight for market share in 2017 The flooring industry is ready to do battle with Brexit from a position of strength according to industry leaders – but the fight for market share over the next two years is expected to be intense. In our survey of retailers last month, the majority thought the Brexit vote had reduced consumer confidence already and 64% expected that position to deteriorate once the European negotiation starts in earnest in the Summer. 69% were worried about the impact of exchange rates but the greatest fear was reserved for inflation with 75% of our readers expecting likely rises later in 2017 would hold back consumer spending. But overall, retailers remain optimistic about the future with 47% expecting sales growth in 2017. Among industry leaders, sentiment is similarly robust – optimism tempered by a recognition that trading could get very tough indeed if Brexit negotiations get negative reporting. The head of one of the top 5 carpet manufacturers told The Stocklists: “Once Brexit is triggered there is going to be a lot of negativity and it is going to be tough for a lot of people. The uncertainty will cause major problems for any company that isn’t fully match fit. There is over-capacity in the industry and that chicken could finally come home to roost.”

“This is a tricky time for crystal ball gazing!” At Associated Weavers, MD Steve Elliott agrees in part but is optimistic too. “Undoubtedly it is going to be tough and there will be a battle for market share – it may come down to the survival of the fittest. But I do think there is also a lot to look forward to,” he said “and overall I am confident about the future, especially for those companies like ourselves that have built a position of strength that can carry us through.” “This is a tricky time for crystal ball gazing!,” says David Cormack at Cormar. “It’s anybody’s guess how things will turn out but when times are challenging, people turn to the companies they can trust for reliability and service so we are in a great position to do our very best for their businesses. Geoff Wilding, chairman of Victoria Carpets reported to shareholders last month that Brexit has had “no discernible impact on demand for product”. The company also says price increases impact sales less than many fear. As consumer spend for carpet averages at £300-£500 per room “any marginal increase in price per square metre will have limited impact on them deciding whether or not to proceed with the purchase,” he commented. And the ‘position of strength’ is conspicuous among the leading manufacturers who have built up their businesses in readiness over the last two years. Examples include the major new product portfolios at class-leading competitors like Cormar, Associated Weavers and Furlong Flooring; the consolidation and re-energising at Victoria plc including top brands like Victoria, Abingdon, Whitestone Weavers and Interfloor; and the re-organisation and re-focus across the Headlam group to strengthen key companies like Kingsmead, Manx, Mr Tomkinson and Gaskell Wool Rich. So the lines are drawn to tackle the challenge and overall 58% of our readers expressed a positive sentiment for the industry as a whole over the next five years.

UK “continues to trade well” Victoria explains why it’s bullish about the future - and sees further growth from acquisition. Victoria says the floorcovering sector is performing well and that Brexit has had little impact on consumer confidence so far. In a comment on currency issues, the company has also indicated that it believes consumers are less sensitive to price increases than some commentators may think. As a public company, Victoria makes a detailed report to shareholders twice a year and the trading report on November 22 for the six months to October 1 recorded like-for-like sales growth in the UK of 3.5%. Overall, ‘underlying’ profits were up from £7.9m to £12.3 for the period. “The UK, which is about 75% of our business, continues to trade well. Brexit has had no discernible impact on demand for product,” said chairman Geoff Wilding. The company’s detailed comments makes interesting reading for the sector as a whole... While currency has been blamed for increased pressure on the sector,Victoria are bullish. “With some 60% of carpet sold in the UK imported – primarily from Europe – weaker Sterling has benefited us by making our main competitors product materially more expensive whilst less than 20% of our cost base is in Euros or US dollars.” says the company. “Unlike most other retail purchases, consumers typically only decide to invest in a new carpet for their home once every seven to nine years. As a result, consumers have little awareness as to what a square metre of carpet “should” cost,” explains Victoria. “It is for that reason that the price at which we can sell product is governed moreover by the price point of our competitors than consumers expectations. This, therefore, makes it easier to pass on any production-based inflationary pressures due to all manufacturers broadly being in the same position; all seeking to increase prices at similar inflection points.” The company has stated its aim to continue to build market share in the UK and Europe – acquisitions in recent years have included Abingdon, Gaskell Mackay, Interfloor,Thomas Witter, Whitestone Weavers and Westex. “With no shortage of acquisition opportunities in the UK and Europe, the Board is confident it can continue to grow Victoria,” says Geoff Wilding.

Heartfelt safety

Evesham based luxury vinyl flooring specialist Karndean Designflooring is putting lives first at its state of the art showroom and head office by installing its very own lifesaving defibrillator on site.

As well as investing in its dedicated defibrillator, Karndean has provided ‘imperative’ basic life support and awareness training for its staff to be on hand to help save the lives of people who suffer potentially fatal cardiac arrests. The move follows a significant increase in the number of people visiting Karndean’s popular showroom, on Crab Apple Way, to view luxury vinyl floor designs inspired by real wood and stone. It is also set to benefit local businesses and retailers based around Vale Park, who will have access to the equipment. “With the showroom team welcoming over 1,000 visitors in October alone, it’s never been a more crucial time for us to invest in lifesaving equipment to help keep our staff and visitors safe,” explains Paul Staite, environmental, health and safety manager of Karndean Designflooring. He said: “Health and safety is of paramount importance to us as a responsible and growing business, and we ensure we take all measures to put lives first. Our showroom is open to the public seven days a week, and with more and more visitors on-site, the risk of a visitor having a cardiac arrest on site increases. “If the worst was to happen, we’re safer in the knowledge a trained member of the team will be able to respond and provide early CPR and defibrillation.” The British Heart Foundation advises approximately 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the UK, and it explains every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chances of survival by up to 10 per cent. NEWS Top carpet brands ring the changes

The new year means new leadership for several key floorcovering brands following a strategic review by Europe’s leading floorcovering distributor, the Headlam Group.

The move mainly affects the management and organisation at Kingsmead, Manx, Mr Tomkinson and Gaskell Wool Rich and is designed to increase the focus on providing a wider product portfolio and more choice for independent retailers.

Martin West

Martin West who has been running Kingsmead Carpets since 2004 will assume a more senior role with overall responsibility for the group’s residential businesses which operate from their Tamworth distribution centre. As a result, Graham Harris who has headed up Manx Carpets moves over to run Kingsmead (and continues his role at Clarendon Carpets).

A new company is being created by the merger of Manx and Mr Tomkinson as Manx Tomkinson led by Mike Dobson. “This will be a business that is the best of both worlds for retailers, with a superb breadth of products across wool ranges and synthetic carpets” says Mike. “Also the sales team will have smaller territories so that they can spend more time looking after individual accounts.” Mike will also head up the new Gaskell Wool Rich which now becomes a stand-alone business. “This is an exciting move - giving more focus on wool where demand is still strong and wool loops are performing especially well. Our dedicated sales team of seven representatives and a sales manager will grow market share in this important sector based on our expertise in wool and a widening product portfolio.” Martin West told The Stocklists that the group was reorganising “from a position of strength and focus.” He added: “We are very enthusiastic about the new structure and very bullish for the future. Retailers will benefit from a bigger choice across the portfolio of all our brands.”

Flower on Flooring The (flooring) shows must go on There are a number of events for the UK's flooring sector to visit in the year ahead and The Stocklists presents an overview of some of the leading options, with two choices in this month alone. First to open is DOMOTEX, running from 14th to 17th January in Hannover including 1,350 exhibitors from more than 60 nations and a trade audience from retailing and wholesaling, architecture, interior design, skilled trades and the furniture and home furnishings sectors.

The Young Designer Trends Table is a new feature, where young designers from five countries will present their take on the flooring trends of the future in Hall 9, with visitors also invited to join them in a roundtable discussion.

The Carpet Design Awards jury has a new lineup for 2017 and will be chaired by award-winning carpet designer Stephanie Odegard from New York. She will be joined by Vanessa Brady, founder of SBID in London, Wilhard Kühne, carpet specialist and buyer from Dogern in Germany, and Kistaa Saksi, artist and designer from the Netherlands. The jury will select the best three designer carpets in eight different categories.

The January Furniture Show is the largest UK interiors trade show in the UK and runs from 22nd to 25th January this year, held over four days in five halls of the NEC in Birmingham.

Held on 9th and 10th May, The Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show will take place at Cranmore Park in Solihull. The show is aimed at bringing together an exciting mix of buying group retailer members with over 60 of the top suppliers.

The show is renowned for its intimate and friendly atmosphere and Showtime in Solihull for the buying groups is an ideal place to network and share ideas. The 2017 show will be an ideal platform for suppliers to showcase new products, trends and innovations and an opportunity to speak to some of the top independent retailers and seek their thoughts on new initiatives.

All flooring buying group retail members are welcome to attend. The venue includes free car parking and every delegate that attends the show is provided with a free lunch and refreshments.

The UK’s Flooring Show will return for its 55th edition from 17th to 19th September 2017 at the Harrogate International Centre, after last year's most successful event to date saw 3,119 visitors in attendance. Next year, organiser Wendy Adam’s Associates is looking to build on this success through new and improved features.

A new Advice Clinic supporting the improved selection of seminars running throughout the three day show will combine with the return of the Demo Zones, Trends Hub and Wool Trends Centre, providing visitors with the chance to receive expert advice and guidance.

NICF will run the Carpet Fitter of The Year following its successful return last year, with more details on the exhibition's website.

Hall 2 is a hotspot for flooring at the NEC every January

On view will be carpet, tile and stone, wood flooring, laminate and vinyl through to accessories and many more items for visitors including retailers, contractors, manufacturers, architects, property developers, interior designers and others.

Over 450 companies exhibit and more than 20,000 visitors attend to view over 50,000 new designs and products from hard wood flooring to grand sofas and chandeliers. Each of the five halls has a different focus.

The Flooring Showcase is held in Hall 2 and is a hotspot for retail and contract buyers. It features some of the UK’s long established soft and hard flooring manufacturers and producers. Showing their new designs and innovations this year will be Axminster Carpets, Victoria Carpets, Edel Telenzo, Cavalier Carpets, Brockway, Westex, Think Rugs, Woodpecker Flooring and Forbo Flooring among others. They will be joined by underlay suppliers Ball & Young and buying group SMG. 38 January 2017

Decorex, the UK’s only show for the luxury design market, will return from 17th to 20th September 2017 as the opening destination of The London Design Festival.

In its 40th year, this historical show is the only one of its kind for the high-end UK interiors industry and expects more than 400 exhibitors - from established names through to new talent - to launch their latest collections over the course of four days. Exhibitors will include Silvan Hardwood Flooring, Stone & Ceramic Warehouse, Walking on Wood, Period Flooring and Lemma SAS. The Red Carpet Awards, set up by the Carpet Foundation to encourage the media to write more about carpet, has a celebrity panel of judges that has included Eamonn Holmes, Fiona Fullerton, Nina Campbell, Sophie Conran, Ann Maurice and many others. The ceremony in The 2016 judging panel of, left to London now right, Andrea Maflin, Rupert Anton, features seven Vanessa Brady and Sophie Conran. awards and is one of the most successful Carpet Foundation initiatives, resulting in carpet being regularly featured in magazines. It is the only flooring industry event that attracts up to 100 journalists and generates in excess of £250,000 worth of media exposure for carpet.

Initially viewed with scepticism by the industry, this was resolved by inviting buying group chief executives, members and independent The Good Housekeeping team with Rupert retailers, says including Carolyn Bailey, centre, Homes Editor, Rupert Anton: and, far right, Lindsay Nicholson, editor “Once people see not only who goes, but also how popular they are and the resultant editorial coverage, not to mention the relationship with the media, then cynicism moves to understanding. We now run them every other year and they are a ‘must attend’ for the media.”

NEWS Tribute to Peter Sharpe

Furlong Flooring is sad to announce the death of Peter Sharpe, Managing Director of its distribution centre in Dartford, Kent. After a brave and defiant fight against motor neurone disease, Peter passed away peacefully on 3rd December 2016.

Peter was a prominent and highly respected member of the UK carpet industry for nearly 30 years. After starting his career at Gripperrods, Peter then spent six rewarding years at DLW before he was approached to join Hall’s Floorings as Commercial Director in 1997. In 2008, Peter joined Furlong Flooring as Sales Director. Malcolm Gibson, Furlong Flooring’s Group Managing Director, said: “Peter was a key member of the commercial team that has developed Furlong Flooring into an industry leading manufacturer. His colleagues, customers and friends in the industry will have many fond memories of working with him and at this difficult time I am confident that he would want us to remember the good times we have all shared. He will be missed by us all.” In a 2013 interview Peter was asked about the best piece of advice he had received. He stated that “it came from my piano teacher prior to a concert in Windsor; “If you don’t have passion, then you have nothing! If you don’t believe in what you are doing, then why would anyone else?” He leaves his wife Jo-ann and children Molly and George, who were his world.

Fairwell to ‘Big Fred’

It is with much sadness that we report the death of Mr W.F. Curtis – known in the Carpet world as “Big Fred’. He passed away after a relatively short illness in the Macmillan Unit at Christchurch Hospital in Dorset on Thursday 1st December aged 92 years.

He had worked for Hugh Mackay & Co., Durham, soon after leaving school. He was extremley well known throughout the industry and spent his time in later years as contracts manager, specialising in the supply of carpets to the cruise line industry, best known for his work on the QE2 with Cunard. He loved his work on the ships and spent the majority of his holidays cruising.

Christmas giving

The Furniture Makers' Christmas Ball at Mitton Hall raised more than £4,000 for the industry's only dedicated charity.

More than 100 people from across the industry attended the black tie event at the stunning 15th century Manor House near Clitheroe in Lancashire, in the heart of Ribble Valley. They included tables from Belfield Furnishings, Silentnight, Carpenter, REM, Panaz, AKA PR, Burnley College, Cavendish and Lectra. Said ball organiser and chair of the The Furniture Makers' north west fundraising group, Jan Turner: “It was a terrific night with a champagne theme, great food, and a live band in a glorious and very Christmassy setting. Everyone there seemed to really have fun on the night which got the festive season off to a cracking start and I'm delighted we also managed to raise £4,000. A very big thank you to everyone who supported us so generously.” The northern fundraising group's next major event is Northern Bigshots on Thursday April 20 2017, followed by the annual Curry Night on Thursday May 18. Dynamic displays

NEWS

Crown Floors will reveal an impressive updated wall unit, alongside lecterns and a new book stand, all designed to make sure the key messages of value, style and quality are delivered. Including the Familyproof Comfort tombola that holds an astounding 74 different carpets.

A common site in flooring retailers across the country, our wall unit is the best way to really deliver the power of the Crown Floors brand,” says James Caldwell, sales coordinator, on the brand’s appearance at the show. “However some stores in the interiors and furniture sector, do not have the room for such a stand, so we have a range of other displays that can still bring our high-impact brand and stylish carpet ranges. “We’ll be bringing these to the January Furniture Show so that interiors and furniture retailers can see just how the Crown Floors brand can add an extra dynamic to their store.” T0800 0773301 www.crownfloors.co.uk

“Ugly” innovation

The team behind a new trailer restraint system - the first of its kind in the UK has been recognised for its innovative invention which allows larger loose loads to be carried more safely.

Flooring and accessories manufacturer Interfloor, based in Haslingden Lancashire, and its supply chain partner XPO Logistics have been working on a new restraint system suited to the loose loads or "ugly freight" its trailer fleet delivers to over 2000 UK outlets every week from Interfloor's manufacturing sites in Lancashire and Scotland. XPO Logistics has been servicing Interfloor's UK deliveries since 2012 with an inherited fleet of 40 trailers using a spring loaded poles restraint system which was difficult to manoeuvre by the drivers and prone to failing. A review of the system and available alternatives more suited to Interfloor's "ugly freight" led to the Interfloor and XPO Logistics team designing their own bespoke system using side bars attached on rollers that run along a track that is mounted to the roof. XPO Logistics Contracts Manager Wayne Robinson with Interfloor Operations Director Mark Jennings.

Every year XPO Logistics holds the Summit Awards to recognise those people in the business who have gone above and beyond to improve areas such as Health and Safety, Commercials and Customer Service. This year, XPO Logistics Contracts Manager Wayne Robinson, who has worked with Interfloor for over three years and led the team developing the new restraint system, received the Health & Safety Award. Commenting, he said: “We initially designed two concept trailers with the help of suppliers and the results were impressive. The new system is much easier to operate and less likely to fail thanks to the rolling side bars so the impact on safety for our drivers, customers and the general public has been significant. Although it's my name on the XPO Logistics award, this has been very much a team effort.” XPO Logistics and Interfloor now have 25 trailers with the new system, with the rest of the 40-strong fleet due to be delivered in the first quarter of 2017. Interfloor CEO, John Cooper said: "This is an important invention for our logistics team which will improve safety for our drivers on the road and also our customers during unloading. The ability to carry larger loads more safely is a fantastic outcome, and Wayne and his team are worthy winners of XPO's award.”

DOMOTEX 2017preview Platinum power British Wool

British Wool will be exhibiting at Domotex, Hannover as part of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce UKTI initiative, which also sees a collective of UK carpet manufacturers exhibiting in one space in Hall 5. British Wool will feature their ‘Platinum Power’ promotion - which interactively exhibits the extreme strength of 100% British Wool in carpet and compares it to the damaging instant effect of pressure on other wools within a typical blend for carpet. The natural, robust bulk of British Wool is a characteristic of many sheep breeds in the UK and results from a combination of the UK’s temperate climate, the terrain which the sheep inhabit, coupled with historic breeding across different sheep breeds. “We know that British Wool has exceptional strength and can resist continuous pressure as the Platinum Power test shows very clearly. It is a fantastic fibre in it’s 100% form but also adds enormous value to carpet blends when it is more than 50%. However, this appearance retention is particularly evident in carpet blends with 70% British Wool within the wool content,” Tim Booth, Marketing Manager of British Wool said. Also featuring on the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce stand will be Cormar Carpets, Cavalier Carpets, Brockway Carpets and Chromatone. T 01274 688666

Top ten decors IVC Group

The IVC Group returns to the halls to present its latest in cushion vinyl design, new and updated collections included in both Leoline and Avenue portfolios catering to trend predictions for herringbones, wash effects and geometrics underfoot.

Avenue Floors welcomes in Ultimate Expressions, a brand new collection with 10 previously unseen decors on show. This range is the product of extensive trends research by the IVC design team, with nods to herringbone through Greta and Stuttgart, and also a penchant for geometrics which is set to be this year’s big look. Geometric designs include the very contemporary Goldie and Audrey, and for those seeking a touch of continental influence in their homes, the mosaic tile-inspired Nuria. Avenue’s Titanium XT collection also welcomes in six new decors, including white oak Nimes and fumed timber Arcadia, to keep it up-to-the-minute in the style stakes. Not only known for its aesthetics, Titanium XT is also a collection that is equally suited to heavy domestic as it is general commercial use. The result is the perfect “go-to” partner to retailers and contractors working across a range of environments, from demanding homes through to soft, or semi-contract projects. Meanwhile, Leoline, a brand famed for its on-trend underfoot options, welcomes in new collection Luxury Classics to sit alongside Luxury Trends and Woods. Luxury Classics holds no fewer than 12 new decors that cover both wood and tiled effects; whether a traditional oak or a more trend-leading herringbone approach is required, this stable is primed and ready for inclusion in a spectrum of interior styles. Manufactured from 100% Finesse polypropylene for a finer softer look, Soft Focus uses two fold yarn with increased filaments for the ultimate luxurious, silky feel. Eye-catching expansion F&X Carpets

F&X Carpets will treat Domotex 2017 guests to its most far-reaching portfolio to date, a range that spans the very best in wool, wool-blends, polypropylene and PET fibres. This is a brand that has continued to gain traction in the UK over the past 12 months, helped in no small part by the introduction of a 42,000ft UK warehouse. This has allowed F&X Carpets to hold thousands of rolls in stock, making them more accessible than ever to retailers who seek a more instantaneous service. This, coupled with some sumptuous fibres presented on eye-catching point-of-sale, makes F&X Carpets an enticing prospect for all travelling over to Hannover this January. The Himalaya stable represents F&X’s wool and wool-blends, an extensive collection that stretches from a traditional wool offering through to carpets made with Yak hair. Meanwhile, the brand presents Ara and Lyra in 100% recyclable PET Aevita, perfect for those seeking a more sustainable angle in their underfoot choice.

Stain-resistant Suretex PP fibre, with lines including Casa and Meridian, cap this year’s F&X portfolio, carpets that are resilient and UV-protected in equal measure, helping to prevent degradation in particularly sun-filled spaces. T 0330 1232 355

This new pressure sensitive vinyl adhesive is a unique formulation and offers instant initial grab, combined with ultra-high bond strength, providing contractors with the familiar reassurance of high initial tack and, when fully cured, it develops the strength to hold vinyl sheets and tiles securely in place across a huge range of temperatures. The water-based adhesive has been specifically developed for use in conditions, which are subject to extreme temperature fluctuations as low as 20°c and up to +60°c, such as conservatories or heavily glazed areas and is suitable for use over normal underfloor heating systems. DOMOTEX 2017preview Fashion update Louis de Poortere

Producer of premium quality rugs and broadloom, Louis de Poortere, will use this year’s Domotex to exhibit a host of new introductions and updates with ‘high fashion’ Haute Couture taking a starring role. “Following the successful introduction of Haute Couture in 2016, we are keen to show those travelling to Germany just how special this collection can be for enhancing an interior scheme,” says Alan Russell, UK Sales Director. “This beautiful carpet is already showing signs of success in the UK, largely thanks to its farreaching design stable presented in a unique new point-of-sale box.” When the concept of Haute Couture was born, inspiration was taken from across the continent and beyond. Its stylish pure wool and cotton blends are well capable of speaking for themselves, but the introduction of a new space-saving POS box allows retailers to showcase everything that Haute Couture can offer, but without the in-store footprint. This box includes high quality samples and marketing material to match, a chance to introduce customers not only to Haute Couture’s versatility in style, but also its hardwearing durability and suitability for use across a range of locations. Divine developments Lano

“This is a very exciting period for the Lano Carpets brand as we showcase a host of new improvements at Domotex 2017,” says Birger Karlsson, UK & Ireland Sales Director.

Touchdown is the first to welcome changes in 2017, with the new super soft Eccelena Silk PP fibre used to its fullest by new collections Treasure Elite and Treasure Superior (a 50oz twist pile and 60oz Saxony, respectively). A further super soft option added to Touchdown is Fairfield Silk, joining its Stripe and Supreme sisters and again using Eccelena Silk for easy-clean luxury underfoot. Essenz has also seen improvements for the season ahead. Divine, a 75oz luxury Saxony, has been upgraded, with a new yarn construction for increased performance. New Divine will hold an on-trend colour bank, taking the best-selling shades from popular Startwist and Heathertwist collections - including of-the-moment naturals and greys - and working them into a fibre that’s also high-performing and easy to clean. Meanwhile, in X-Concept, new collections Bamboo Velvet and Bamboo Touch will join existing Smartstrand, wool, nylon and bamboo ranges. Engineered with a 5/64” construction using fine gauge viscose looks, this duo’s beautiful soft premium feel is joined by the anti-bacterial and humidity regulating qualities only bamboo can offer. The final addition to X-Concept is Casanova, a 3,400gr Luxury Saxony that meets demand for high-performing nylon 6.6, the end result akin to a hand-tufted rug. Edging ahead Edel Telenzo

Edel Telenzo’s Rugs and Runners concept gives fresh reason to travel to Germany this January as the brand uses Domotex to show retailers how accessible bespoke flooring can be. Catering to the tastes of designers and homeowners, no matter how unique, Rugs and Runners is sure to entice visitors to what will be a heavily populated Edel Telenzo stand. With 88 different edging options on offer, and the ability to mix with the Edel Telenzo carpet design that appeals most, customers can now create a fitting rug or runner for any size - or style - of space. Choices really are endless, Edel Telenzo continuing to set the highest standards when it comes to the stylistic possibilities put forward. It is continuous improvement in this department that allows the brand to compete, Domotex a vibrant hub of underfoot design concepts but few out-performing Rugs and Runners in terms of sheer diversity and choice. Perfect for larger rugs and statement stair runners, a generous 5cm wide edging option is available in leather, felt or linen, while a more subtle 1cm wide cotton option will suit any rug, irrespective of dimensions. Holding no fewer than 46 shades, the cotton edge offers the broadest colour spectrum, from subtle neutrals to more outlandish brights, while the 19-strong linen brings homeowners of-the-moment greys alongside more traditional whites and creams. The heritage underlay brand Duralay has been refreshed and positioned as the contractors’ brand of choice and for more technical applications in the home, and Interfloor’s best-selling luxury underlay in the UK Tredaire has also been updated with more contemporary-styled POS materials, including a new foot tester, introduced to further support retailers and enhance the in-store experience for consumers. Interfloor’s Domotex stand will feature the Duralay Durafit System, trusted for heavy-wear areas, which has new exclusive Bacloc backing and higher bonding achieved with new Durafit double-stick adhesives to give the system greater dimensional stability. There’s also a chance to find out more about the enhanced Duralay Timbermate sponge rubber underlays suitable for use with solid wood and laminate floors. The range includes Timbermate Excel and Silentfloor Gold, plus the hardwearing Duratex, which all reduce in-room noise by c. 30 per cent and are suitable for use with underfloor heating. Finally, Interfloor’s product range includes accessories designed to ensure a quick, cost-effective and high quality installation. Gripperrods, the only remaining British manufacturer of gripper, includes carpet gripper, heat seaming tapes, single and double-sided tapes and tools, while the Stikatak range includes floor edgings to suit all types of floor as well as multipurpose adhesives and tackifiers ideal for direct stick down, single and double stick installations for carpet and carpet tiles. Warrant for wool Axminster Carpets

Royal Warrant holders Axminster Carpets, will be on stand FS17 showcasing the finest in wool carpets.

Famous for producing wool carpets in Axminster since 1755, their 2017 collection offers customers a wide choice of patterned and plain carpets – from the on trend hushed grey tones of the latest collection Hazy Days (pictured left, Kaleidoscope in Pebble) through to timeless classics such as the popular Royal Dartmouth collection. Throughout the show the Axminster Carpets specialists will be available to demonstrate how a wool carpet contributes to a room’s environment. From its natural durability and fire retardant nature to its ability to help to actively remove indoor air contaminants often linked to allergies and asthma a wool carpet is the perfect choice throughout the home. Going for growth Interfloor "Providing better looking and better performing flooring products that genuinely help our customers to profitably grow their business is our priority, and we're looking forward to showing visitors to this great event how we can support them in 2017," said Interfloor CEO John Cooper. Top-selling Tredaire, which has been on the market for over 50 years, has undergone a brand refresh and this year more contemporary-styled POS materials, including a foot tester, have been introduced to enhance the in-store experience. Tredaire is renowned for its underfoot comfort and adding warmth and cosiness to any room, giving an experience akin to "treading on air". With many homeowners opting for soft furnishings which create a feeling of luxury, branded Tredaire Polyurethane Foam (PU) underlays including Sensation, Ambience and Citra are popular choices which can help to achieve a truly indulgent underfoot experience. Interfloor's top sponge rubber underlay, Tredaire Colours Red also performs superbly for comfort and spring back. Sponge rubber underlays have been around since the 1950s for very good reason: no other underlay produces quite the same feel underfoot. T 01706 213131 50 January 2017

Hard hitting Crown Floors Vinnie Jones, the legendary football and movie hard man, will be on hand to introduce the newest ‘big thing’ in carpet at this year’s show. Teaming up with friend and flooring expert Danny Deacon, Vinnie has selected eight exclusive Crown Floors styles to create the Deacon Jones brand. These carpets mirror the man himself, the epitome of strength and resilience while showing a surprisingly soft side underfoot. Choose from four X-Tron extra-strong polypropylene fibres, and four super-soft fibres spanning polypropylene and polyamide, for stunning looks and simple care. Geert Vanden Bossche, Marketing Director, comments: “Vinnie does not only hold a high profile in the realms of football and film, he has also been involved in property development for over 20 years, so we expect his endorsement to bring extra confidence to those seeking trending wall-to-wall looks in extra-strong and soft fibres.” The Deacon Jones by Crown Floors collection is presented on a striking double-sided book stand, featuring a near life-size Vinnie Jones for added impact. This, along with further updates made to the Crown Floors carpet portfolio, will be available to view at the show, with eye-catching new wall units, lecterns and book stands taking centre stage. With finishing touches being made to what promises to be an impressive portfolio of design-led collections set for launch in 2017, Edel Telenzo will also showcase its Rugs and Runners Collection. Launched this Autumn and proving hugely popular, the new collection of semi-bespoke rugs and runners has taken the sector by storm. Now visitors are set to offer a new audience for this latest innovation from Edel Telenzo. T 01422 374417

Push posh Ball & Young Retailers are increasingly savvy about selling underlay alongside carpet purchases and are finding that consumers are often less resistant than they might have feared - the argument about comfort, plus protecting their investment in the appearance of the new carpet is a tried and trusted formula that works. And once a consumer has taken the step to purchase underlay, the retailer can be on a roll as often the householder is then keen to get the product you recommend or may even just ask “what’s the best” for this job. The Cloud 9 ranges covers all the bases for price and comfort but when customers ask about the “best” Ball & Young’s “Posh Collection” is the answer - Connoisseur, Charleston and Caviar & Crystal. That’s because they don’t just do the job in style, they look the part with attractive branding and packaging that reassures the consumer that they are really getting something a bit extra for their money. “My job is to make sure everybody’s satisfied,” says Ann Shaw. “Delighted consumers and happy retailers. And it’s not difficult when you push posh!” T 01536 200502

Strong on soft Furlong Flooring Furlong Flooring set the pace in the soft sector in the final quarter of 2016 with the launch of Solitaire, a beautifully finished soft saxony with a superb touch along with strong visual impact across a new range of contemporary colours. “The response from retailers was incredibly enthusiastic for Solitaire” says Furlong’s Neil Valentine. “And we have a collection of new launches that are going to sustain that momentum throughout 2017.” The new portfolio will offer maximum flexibility for independent retailers to exceed customer expectations with the quality and performance of soft-touch, bleach-cleanable carpets. “We want to enable retailers to offer consumers a higher quality carpet than they bargained for,” says Neil. “And then the superb products in our Carefree Prestige range will create those all-important opportunities to trade-up, increasing margins but at a price that’s totally acceptable to the consumer.” T 01772 696787 www.regencycarefree.co.uk Hall 2, Stand FS1 & FS30

On trend twist Cavalier Cavalier Carpets’ retail area will showcase the latest developments in point of sale equipment displaying part of their classic wool based ranges including the launch of Cosmopolitan, a brand new 1/8th gauge twist, with a new modern palette of twenty four sophisticated plain tones. Available in three qualities and two widths. To back up Cavalier’s new plain twist collection, they have extended the already successful Pennine Heathers with the addition of new colours and two more weights (40oz & 60oz). Being long associated with the production of fine velvet qualities, Cavalier did not disappoint with the re-styling of the well established Cartouche range, with seven tasteful new tones which give the range a whole new look. 2017 will see the Stain-less collection boasting another two new products, Protégé and Virtuoso, both of which have the same choice of ten popular colours in two distinctive quality options, 4 & 5m widths and, as ever, the assurance of bleach cleanable stain resistance. For visitors with contract applications in mind Cavalier will be showcasing new stock tufted graphics range developments such as ‘Classic Herringbone’ and ‘Pinstripe’. Custom graphics will be a major feature of the stand, demonstrating the capabilities of one of Europe’s most extensive bespoke tufting facilities; cut pile, loop pile, multi gauge up to 5 metre widths and full finishing line including twin head shearing. Flooring factsheet from Interfloor Specialist underlays – wood & laminate flooring Interfloor’s British manufactured specialist underlays for wood and laminate flooring offer some of the best noise reducing performance in the industry. The Duralay Timbermate range includes the best-selling sponge rubber brands Timbermate Excel and Silentfloor Gold, a premium underlay with an impressive 53 SONE rating, plus the hardwearing Duratex.

Tests show in-room acoustics can worsen if inferior or lightweight underlays are used with hard flooring; putting a lightweight, air filled, cellular product under wood or laminate creates an echo chamber and more noise, whether it’s generated by scraping furniture, heavy footsteps or reverberation. While many products on the market claim to be acoustic underlays, their impact test results just don’t compare to the low noise levels of Timbermate underlays which reduce in-room noise by up to 30 per cent. Independent tests prove the Timbermate products, with their superior weight and density, significantly reduce acoustic noise levels and all have achieved low SONE ratings. Timbermate Excel is a 3.60mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay; while the top end Silentfloor Gold is a 4.20mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay. Both underlays feature Interfloor’s VapourStop membrane, which helps prevent moisture, and branded backing to help differentiate them from inferior copycat products. For installations where moisture is not an issue, Duratex is a heavy-duty 3.60mm gauge high density resilient rubber underlay that offers great performance and excellent value. Manufactured at Interfloor’s Haslingden site, the three products in the Timbermate range are rated highly in the LEED programme. The underlays are fully recyclable at the end of their life; contain not less than three percent pre-consumer recycled material and 5 LEED points are available if used within 500 miles from the point of production. They also meet or exceed the industry standard for indoor air quality as established by the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Green Label programme. And for the perfect finishing touch, Interfloor’s accessories include Stikatak edgings to suit all types of floor, including the 9mm Zig Zag which gives a neat transition between laminate/hard flooring and adjacent stretch carpet installation. For further information, please visit www.interfloor.com

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 58

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. www.interfloor.com

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.

www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk

Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 60

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS January 2017

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

www.flooringone.co.uk Contact: Glenn Harding Tel: 0121 683 1426 glenn.harding@flooringone.co.uk

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 62

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 63
