Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE The WOOLSAFE Mark has gone Green! The WOOLSAFE Organisation has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal and EcoLogo in North America, to enable those WOOLSAFE approved products that are ecologically responsible to be recognised and promoted as such.

Regular Maintenance

Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.

Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Periodic Cleaning

When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approved products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package:

The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.

General Rules for Spot Removal • Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth

• Scoop up or scrape off solids

Chemspec Europe is one of the first WOOLSAFE Licensees in the UK to have a ‘green’ product certified. It is expected that other products will follow shortly.

For the widest range of WOOLSAFE approved products www.chemspec-europe.com

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment – if unsure, use solvent first • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards • BLOT, do NOT rub

• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles • When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves. Protective treatments Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular cleaning is still required.

Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDER section.)

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match.

For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

The original carpet tile

SHEDDING

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.

6

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

• shedding • pulled loops

SPROUTING

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADING

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATIC

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions.

Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990). THE STOCKLISTS June 2009

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.

The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course. THE STOCKLISTS June 2009

FLATTENING

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

SOILING

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages

- Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave

sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil

carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.

T HE R EGENCY

Collection

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms. CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home. Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is BONDED Tip Sheared Level Loop Tip Sheared Level Loop Sheared Level Loop a versatile, textured finish that is idealTipfor plain colours. Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then used for commercial carpet tiles. sheared to give a smooth finish. THE STOCKLISTS June 2009

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.interfloor.com

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

www.interfloor.com

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Benefits

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Combination

14

Crumb

PU foam

www.floorwise.co.uk

Types Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired

100% recycled carpet Mohawk International takes old plastic bottles and turns them into beautiful, luxurious carpet... Hard to believe we know, but a plastic bottle you drink from today could one day become fibres in Mohawk’s carpet.

Make the most of the consumer’s love of all things green with the new Environmental Tombola featuring carpet manufactured from 100% recycled material

Polyethylene terephthalate (P.E.T) is the top quality resin required in the production of plastic drinks bottles. When recycled, it can be extruded into fibres that are far superior to lower-grade synthetic virgin fibres used in making other brands of carpet yarns. Mohawk recycles over 3 billion plastic bottles each year. By controlling every aspect of “Mohawk recycles over 3 billion the recycling plastic bottles each year.” process, Mohawk guarantees the highest standards of performance in its luxurious and beautiful carpet. From bottle to floor - that’s how we do it.

We tick all the boxes!

Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to.

Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours.

A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line.

Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.

As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others.

the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality

Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.

Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of the product range to consumers with a market-leading modular POS system which they will deliver and design to suit your store.

Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland.

SHOWCASE AND

FLOORING ONE 2009 Flooring One’s flagship show in Solihull last month provides an interesting snapshot of new styles and sales initiatives that are being introduced into the market during the year. The beautifully presented event in the purpose-built showrooms of Flooring One’s parent company AIS showcases their comprehensive approach to servicing its 180 retailers (from 130+ members). “We aim to tick all the boxes for our members,” says the buying group’s controller Glenn Harding.

“We are not just a buying group. We offer a compendium of flooring with a wide range of services including merchandising, point-of-sale, training and technical support, he said.

“We aim to be ahead of the game for the membership in as many ways as possible and raise the standard. We get excellent support from manufacturers and suppliers and although price is important, we factor the debt which is greatly appreciated in the current climate,” he said.

Flooring One offers a ‘compendium of flooring’ with exceptional POS support

Flooring One use the event to display their comprehensive range of 60 core collections across all styles including new contemporary collections. The group is also launching three exclusive new ranges in its relationship with the Greendale buying group – putting this joint effort second only to Carpetright in the sector. The event attracts some of the biggest names in the business from Flooring One’s 36 suppliers, half of whom are in carpets.

Brockway’s cheerful colours

Brockway’s was one of many manufacturers reporting a better mood in the market and the company were looking distinctly cheerful with new colour line-ups in the 80/10/10 Cresta and Florida ranges and in 80/20 Amore. Bluey greys, limey greens and dark browns are competing for consumers’ attention in the updated ranges including Craftsman Twist (pictured)

Associated Weavers flagship

Associated Weavers’ MD, Steve Elliott, said market conditions were “picking up” and they had a busy stand to prove it. Flagship range Park Lane was front of house, a classy multi-width British Wool carpet in 29 contemporary colours, with a mixture of heathers and plains in 40oz & 50oz., shown off on a distinctive black and gold display lectern. The brand new Tuftex Twist Collection in 100% polypropylene, with twelve vibrant colours, has already become a popular choice with hard–wearing performance and the 10 year Stainaway warranty.

Contemporary Pownall

32

A fresh look for Pownall aims to ‘de-complicate’ the brand and present a simple, classic and contemporary look after extensive market research on the subject. Making a debut appearance in the new wall units was 100% wool stripe Fenland Loop, a stripey option designed to co-ordinate with the popular Fenland Textures range - see also page 36. July 2009

EVENT OF STYLE SOPHISTICATION Bond Worth’s axminster innovation

Bond Worth proudly presented their brand new axminster range Romanesque at the Flooring One event. This exciting range represents a first for Bond Worth not only is it their first axminster to contain both berber and stipple yarns, it comes in the customer friendly width of 4 metres. Romanesque is a heavyweight domestic axminster which aims to appeal to a wider customer base than the more traditional axminsters. The range is in stock now and Bond Worth anticipate a strong reaction from retailers.

Ulster invests LDP’s shiny stripes

Louis de Poortere’s remit at the event was to “show something different” according to Alan Russell and he didn’t disappoint. A star attraction was the Polaris collection of fashionable stripes which added a shiny, silky fibre for effect. LDP also gave their Decormatic range of non-slip rugs a UK outing after a highly successful debut at Domotex earlier in the year. These plain but stripe-textured rugs come in eight sizes and 24 colours to offer an easy choice for consumers.

Ulster are able to mount an impressive display with top quality ranges including the new Country House Collection, first previewed at Harrogate – a stunning 80/20 multi-width woven axminster available in three co-ordinating designs. Another interesting newcomer is Elements Wilton, an elegant collection of 100% wool cut/loop woven wilton, which is cleverly showcased on the Elements flowing wall display (pictured). Ulster has recently commissioned a multi-million pound investment in two new 5m wide wilton looms which will continue to expand their multi-width service & quality.

Furlong heather seller

Furlong enjoyed a very positive reaction to the new Trident Heathers range in their Regency Carpets brand which launches this month and had its first showing in Solihull. “This is set to be one of our biggest ever sellers,” says Furlong’s Neil Valentine (pictured below). “Heathers are really strong at the moment and we have had a very good response to the new range here.” Trident Heathers is made in 2-play yarn at 4m and 5m and offered in 12 colours with a 10-year stain and wear guarantee.

Axminster out-performs

There’s lots going on at Axminster at the moment with a fresh look across the company which reckons to be “out-performing the market” according to sales director Steve Upperton. Axmnster were showcasing their super new Simply Natural Stripes in 6-ply which were launched two months ago (pictured here with Steve). Another debut was Dartmoor Filigree, a clever combination of modern and classic design in four subtle colourways and 100% wool.

Interfloor says the programme can grow sales by 40% with and average uplift of over 20%.

Granorte but nice!

And now for something completely different – super-stylish leather floors from Granorte UK. With a surface of 100% recycled leather in 12 elegant designs and colours on a base of renewable, insulating cork, the product passes the most demanding environmental credentials. Granorte use a special surface finish to ensure durability and easy cleaning but it is the striking look and sensuous feel of the product that is a show-stopper. You have to reach down and touch the floor – and you’re sold!

Victoria smart and sharp

Corinthian is a 100% wool tip sheared loop that creates a sophisticated, subtle stripe in 12 colours. Alongside it was Ashbourne Heathers, a heavyweight 60oz sister to the Bracken Heathers range, which has a highly commercial “constant fleck” design offered in 10 colours.

Cavalier cleans up

“Function and beauty by design” is the strapline that runs with Cavalier’s fresh, clean look in the marketplace which attracted strong interest at the Flooring One event. The presentation focussed on the new Country Collection – a rustic cut-pile twist which covers the sector in 4m and 5m widths and three weights from 35oz. to 55oz.

OF THE TRADE

Lesley Inman of Edel Telenzo

Age: old enough to know better Job Title: company secretary and operations manager Years with present company: 26 Years in flooring industry: 26 Previous roles in different companies: dispensary of a pharmacy Main non-work interests: cooking, reading swimming, dancing (all types) and gardening.

What’s the key market issue/challenge today?

“Consumers are ever more critical

Is price winning over quality/design?

and retailers more pressurised, therefore the manufacturer has to respond faster and more effectively”

Maintaining and even improving service levels in reduced market conditions. Consumers are ever more critical and retailers more pressurised therefore the manufacturer has to respond faster and more effectively.

The consumer has to like the quality first, and then they’ll look at the price. At the middle to better end of the market, design and quality rule the decision process but currently consumers are invariably asking for some kind of discount, which is to be expected in this economic climate.

Do you agree that there are too many people making carpet now?

No. If the industry is to thrive, there has to be competition, whether it be in the contract or domestic markets. Depriving consumers of choice would only remove their wish to take the product seriously.

What’s your favourite flooring product?

The range of stripes and plains we launched last year under the Grand Creations banner - Jubilee, Piccadilly, Mainline and Centrepoint. It’s been a very successful selection which has real style and gives good value for money.

If you could ask retailers to change one thing, what would it be?

To value the cost and time that goes into sampling and point-of-sale and to treat carpet samples with more respect. Especially when they are supplied free of charge!

In your time in the trade, what has most surprised you?

How friendly the trade is and how many people are prepared to help one another out – like retailers taking in deliveries for each other and supporting each other.

from The Stocklists

And most disappointed you?

I care about the company, and I get frustrated sometimes when I come across a lack of enthusiasm and innovation, when things are not being improved upon or brought up to date.

9

Are there enough women in the trade given that most purchase decisions are made by women?

Actually men are increasingly also making purchase decisions for themselves and women are paying as well as choosing, as single households are growing! But having said that it’s still a very male-oriented industry; there aren’t enough female sales staff and it would be good to see more ladies in senior management positions as well as in the production and technical side.

What’s the most important key to success in flooring?

It isn’t one thing – it’s three: service, product and price: each one relies on the other two!

If you didn’t work in this industry what would have been your second choice of career? Nurse or pharmacist, but a family history of nursing made me want to try something different.

Flower on Flooring Strength in numbers

Buying groups are a long established part of the flooring industry and provide a number of benefits that enable retailers to remain informed and competitive. Each has its own USP and way of interacting with the flooring industry. Flooring One (AIS), for example, deals with 37 suppliers through its central payment system (Cenpac), covering all flooring products and brands such as Cormar, Axminster, Interfloor and Amtico. Cenpac is designed to benefit both members and suppliers by providing ‘terms above the industry norm’ and guaranteeing members’ debt, which is particularly popular in the current credit climate. ‘A high proportion of the group’s ranges are sold under the Flooring One brand and supported by its annual marketing manual. Retailers are provided with images, page layouts, advertising themes and a promotional calendar, delivering savings on both product and advertising costs.

‘Members also have access to an on-line service to share information, providing access to buyers of up to date product, price and promotional information, print out POS, design adverts and a member forum to discuss issues. Flooring One also has its own AIS 28,000 sq ft showroom in Solihull and holds a trade show each May for all members.

The Associated Carpet Group states that it aims to deliver the best trading terms and business support exclusively for its members. ‘Our philosophy is simple, by supporting our preferred group suppliers members are able to enjoy additional benefits that have been negotiated from a collective strength of over 240 retailers,’ said Richard Moore, membership executive.

With its primary aim being to increase member profit margins, ACG was keen to stress that it does not interfere with members’ businesses or act as a wholesaler. It has launched a comprehensive marketing toolkit, which has proved popular with members, and provides a number of financial benefits, such as interest-free credit rates and discounted BSSA membership. The group has embarked on a recruitment campaign in recent years, which is bearing fruit, said Moore. He regularly visits retailers around the UK and the group has recruited 70 new members in the last four years.

by Dennis Flower

The Metro Group’s most recent efforts have been focused on ecommerce benefits. In addition to building customised websites for each member ‘promoting their business, Carpet1st branded ranges and own label products, supported by a free 24 hour sample service’ this will complement its general website that directs enquires to the nearest member’s store. The project is designed to encourage localised promotion and protect margins, in addition to providing downloadable advisory material for all aspects of business.

Greendale’s ‘Naturally’ display stand

Members also receive 7.5% rebate for selling the group’s own brand products, sourced from top UK suppliers and including best selling ranges. Some members now receive more than £10,000 per annum, the group states. Further to the above, regional meetings are held three times per year, allowing members to network and discuss common issues. Greendale members are also offered a variety of benefits, including a wide range of more than 100 own label carpets stocked in its purposebuilt warehouse. Its stockholding allows it to negotiate better prices, passed to members for improved margins, says the group. Its operation includes a dedicated sales office and customer service, with national deliveries using the Victoria Carpets transport fleet. Exclusive ranges covering all price points, including the up market Elizabeth Grieves Collection and complemented by dedicated support material, are further enhanced through wall and free standing display units and POS information.

With underlay, accessories and hard flooring also available at preferential rates, members additionally receive geographic exclusivity, individual support and BSSA membership.

With a total of 315 members, SMG is celebrating its 40th year of operation with the launch of its Anniversary Carpet Collection, available to members via the SMG Orderlink central purchasing scheme, guaranteeing payment to suppliers within seven working days. Each member placing an order will go into the weekly draw for an iPod Nano until 31st July.

Describing itself as a non-dictatorial independent organisation, the group’s benefits include discounts, preferential prices, rebates and promotional activity. With strong links to Carpet Foundation manufacturing partners, the group has established an approved supplier portfolio.

SMG's promotional calendar is one of the Group's strongest benefits ensuring extra profitability for all members throughout the year.

from The Stocklists

Its retail support package includes a group-sponsored helpline, combined with consumer information and preferential credit card rates, with further advice and information from the BSSA,The Flooring Guild and warranty and insurance referral schemes. In addition to its comprehensive online activities, SMG continues to observe market trends to identify further opportunities of helping members in the future. July 2009

“Harrogate is an amazing networking event” INTERVIEW: SHOW BOSS ANDY VAUGHAN TALKS TO THE STOCKLISTS Recession-hit retailers have more reason to return to the National Floor Show this year, says organiser Andy Vaughan. “I think that in tough times you want to see who you are dealing with and talk to them face-to-face. Relationships and trust are more important than ever,” he said.

SALES AGENTS Can we introduce you to some new business?

“If you sit behind a desk or counter all year, you don’t get that inside track. Harrogate is an amazing networking event and the year’s best opportunity to see what’s really going on in the market”, says Andy Delivering a successful trade show in the teeth of a credit crunch is a challenge for owners United Business Media but there are reasons to be cheerful says Andy. “I won’t pretend otherwise, it isn’t easy - but actually thing are going well and we are very optimistic. We’re pleased with where we are at this stage,” he told The Stocklists.

The organisers have encouraged many new companies to join the event. And key exhibitors such as Associated Weavers, Bajong, Cormar, Karndean, Headlam, Lano, Ulster and Victoria are signed up to show.

“Harrogate maybe had become a little tired. I want visitors to see a fresher, more cheerful show – with more colour and more happening.” Andy has come into the NFS with experience of the major home interest shows run by UBM including the Interiors show held at Birmingham’s NEC each year. “Harrogate is a mature show and maybe it had become a little tired. I want to make the show more aspirational and introduce new initiatives and new people to the event,” he says, promising that “small changes will make a big difference” in 2009.

“Visitors will see a fresher, more cheerful show – with more colour and more happening. We are particularly delighted that we can bring the beautiful, re-furbished Royal Hall back into the event which makes a stunning attraction in itself.”

Visitor numbers and the commitment of exhibitors has declined a little in recent years and the recession inevitably takes its toll but while the 2008 event saw less people, the general consensus was that there was better business being booked. “It’s not about quantity, it’s about quality and buyers,” says Andy. “2008 saw a revival of order-taking at the event. “The flooring industry deserves a strong show but the trade needs to support the event to make it work well – then everybody wins.” he says.

“I think that in tough times you want to see who you are dealing with and talk to them face-toface. Relationships and trust are more important than ever” Andy Vaughan

News The sound of silence Combating sound and soaking up minor subfloor irregularities, the Acoustica range of wood and laminate underlays from Floorwise offer the ideal combination of performance and value.

Acoustica Compact, Acoustica Good, Acoustica Better and Acoustica Best all deaden the sound of wood and laminate floors, providing a quieter atmosphere within the home, while also helping installers to eradicate minor irregularities within the substrate to ensure a secure and reliable floating floor installation.

Manufactured to the highest standards, the Acoustica range has been tested under laboratory conditions to ensure maximum sound beating performance. Acoustica not only deals with impact sound between floors, but also airborne sound within the room, helping to alleviate the often hollow sound that can occur with wood or laminate flooring.Tested under the EPLF’s SONE method, the range topping Acoustica Best achieves a SONE value of 53, while even Acoustica Good scores an impressive 54 SONE.

Acoustica Better and Acoustica Best also feature a moisture barrier that prevents residual moisture penetrating the underlay and adversely affecting moisture-sensitive wood and laminate flooring. “The Acoustica range offers retailers and installers a high performance wood and laminate underlay at exceptional value,” comments Richard Bailey, Managing Director, Floorwise. “With the range, retailers can offer consumers a proven wood and laminate underlay with potential for valuable up-sales, while the installer can select the correct underlay for the job in terms of performance and cost.”

Double decors in stone Kronospan has revamped its Stoneline range, more than doubling the number of available decors. The new options, which comprise a wide choice of shades and textures, have been introduced following the success of the original collection of natural looking stone finishes. Originally created by Italian designers, the Stoneline range has been refreshed by the addition of eight new decors: Castle Stone, Ironworks, Blue Stone, Cemento, African Pantanyo, Mocca, Farmhouse Tile and Limestone.

Kronospan’s Commercial Manager, Nick Barker, explained the move: “The demand for stone finish laminate flooring is strong, hence our decision to extend the range. We want to provide the widest choice, as well as the highest quality, and we are confident that these latest carefully selected decors will further increase the popularity of the Stoneline collection.” The new decors will sit alongside existing options which include: Nero, Dorada Stone, Copper Slate, Metallic Slate,Travertine and Cream. Suitable for heavy domestic and medium commercial use, Stoneline carries a 12-year guarantee, and carries a certification for using FSC sourced timber. T 01691 773361 www.kronospan.co.uk

Show seminar banks on Jeff National Floor Show will welcome acclaimed designer Jeff Banks to the 2009 show. A high profile figure within the industry for many years, he will give a seminar detailing his years in design and passion for interiors.

Following last year’s well-received talk from Red or Dead founder Wayne Hemingway, Jeff will lead the 2009 programme and give an insight into his career. From helping set the fashion tone for 1960s London with the opening of Clobber, to presenting The Clothes Show for the BBC; Jeff has helped pave the way for British design for decades - from founding high street fashion giant Warehouse to working with some of the UK’s leading retailers such as Harvey Nichols and Harrods. Jeff ’s various rug collections for National Floor Show exhibitors Asiatic Carpets, as well as his other attainments, make him well placed to give an insight into flooring design today.

National Floor Show’s free seminar programme will provide visitors with the inspiration and knowledge they need to move forward in today’s environment. Other confirmed seminar speakers include leading interiors trend forecaster Victoria Redshaw, and online retailing specialists Sitemakers Ltd - who will form part of an expert panel debating the pros and cons of online retailing.

NEW retailers respond to industry issues

Net or not?

Can the internet really win you sales... or just lose you customers?

In UK retail as a whole, internet sales have grown to £40 billion annually – that’s 17% of total sales to consumers – but the web has had a shaky start in the flooring sector and it’s unclear whether flooring retailers will ever gain business from the web – or lose customers to online sellers.

Substantial investments have been made by leading organisation’s such as the Carpet Foundation, Headlam with their yourfloors site and the retail giants. Some manufacturers have tried hard to provide quality information online, others haven’t bothered too much.

While you can’t run your fingers through a 60oz wool carpet on a laptop screen, retailers always run the risk of providing a free ‘showroom’ for the net in the way in which electrical white goods retailers are only too familiar. Some analysts predict a ‘tipping point’ in the next five years when retail sales may grow to a third of total retail sales and the High Street will be forced to change structurally.

Booksellers and music stores have already retreated and even the touchy-feely fashion chains are losing out. Is flooring resilient to this trend and can the internet work harder to direct customers to your stores through your own websites and directory sites such as the Carpet Foundation and general services like yell.com? What would you like to see happen on the internet in the flooring industry? Is it a threat or an opportunity? And should your industry be using valuable and scarce resources to make the internet work better for you and your customers? Please let us know…

Jim’ll fix it for Ireland Edel Telenzo’s full-time representative Jim Osborne has up to now been selling the company’s wares in the Midlands but now he’s added Northern Ireland to the territories he covers for the Dutch tufted carpet manufacturer.

“We have many good customers in Northern Ireland,” says Edel Telenzo sales director Philip Hopkins. “We look forward to building our relationships with them and we are sure they will appreciate the more regular contact that Jim’s appointment will bring.” Edel Telenzo employs a further nine agents covering the rest of the UK between them.

“I used to work for Northern Ireland-based carpet manufacturer Spence Bryson before they closed in the 1990s, so I am thrilled at becoming a regular visitor again,” says Jim. “So far I am being made very welcome – and as well as selling Edel Telenzo’s carpets I’m on a mission to convert everyone into Sheffield Wednesday fans!” Somehow we think he’ll be more successful with the carpet!

Green acclaim for Polyflor Vinyl floorcoverings manufactured in Europe have been given the highest possible A+ rating in the new BRE Green Guide to environmentally sustainable products. “This is terrific news for the industry,” says Polyflor marketing manager Simon James. “It vindicates our long held belief that in environmental terms the long service life of vinyls, their ability to be recycled and their performance benefits in use make them the ideal choice among resilient floorcoverings.” Generically, vinyl floorcoverings – including homogeneous, heterogeneous and safety floors – are now BRE A+ rated for major use areas, such as education and health. “The fact that vinyl, generically, is now A+ or A rated will make life simpler for specifiers but it also makes it even more important for manufacturers to successfully pursue other environmental performance objectives in order to differentiate themselves from those who are less environmentally active and aware,” says Simon James.

The latest Polyflor Environmental Report goes into exceptional detail to explain and quantify Polyflor progress in areas such as recycling, reducing energy usage, carbon emissions and waste. The report can be downloaded from www.polyflor.com T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com

News Steps to success

Relax with ‘tasteful’ Tonal Trends

Easy to buy and even easier to carry away, Stair Make-Over is the perfect DIY project for budding home improvers and it is ideal for distributors on the hunt for fresh and interesting solutions to old problems.

With many homes fitted with laminate or wooden floorcoverings in the hallway, stairs can often look a little tired or just out of place and become an object of aesthetic worry for many homeowners. Now with Stair MakeOver’s simple retrofit principle, they can take on the challenge of changing this state of play for themselves. “Stair Make-Over has had great success in mainland Europe, where its ease of ordering and simple installation has appealed to homeowners everywhere and where our support has gained the trust of retailers and distributors,” says Ronnie Houben, UK Sales Manager. “Now UK wholesalers and distributors can benefit from this same service and product, enabling them to offer a unique opportunity to retailers.” Available in five different finishes, conveniently packaged in a two tread pack and boosted by fitting kits and other ancillaries, Stair Make-Over has managed to eliminate the fuss from stairs, offering a quick yet lasting fix. Guided by the website, www.stairmakeover.com, homeowners can estimate the total cost to refurbish their stairway and find local stockists through a few simple clicks. Ronnie Houben continues:

“The novel approach of Stair Make-Over means it is hard to pigeonhole the product into one particular sector and it is relevant to a broad spectrum of suppliers and distributors. With this in mind, we feel it is best to support our wholesalers, distributors and retailers with a comprehensive support package that includes full training, POS, literature and of course, our unique website. This way, Stair Make-Over’s unique approach can be fully understood and sales opportunities fully maximised.” Stair Make-Over is actively seeking national and regional wholesale and distribution partners across the United Kingdom. Modular flooring specialist FLOR by heuga has launched a new collection of beautiful and carefully nuanced colours and textures that bring warmth and serenity – and sophisticated style - to the home, be it in rooms to relax, sleep, play or work in. Designed by expert textiles colour consultant, Cenk of Cenkstudio,Tonal Trends consists of one entirely new range of loop pile carpet tiles; Basic Beauty and two updated and re-coloured carpet tile ranges: Puzzle Pieces/2 (a smooth cut pile) and Lazy Lounge/2 (a cosy high pile).

"Textile floors” explains Cenk, “play an important role in creating atmosphere, especially in combination with other materials in an interior. The concept of harmony is at the heart of the Tonal Trends range, helping to bring warmth and feeling to contemporary and classic interiors with their tasteful colours."

Altogether, the collection consists of 21 new on-trend colours, each of which falls within one of eight nature-inspired chromatic groupings such as ‘earthenware’, ‘woodcarving’, ‘foliage’ and ‘graphite’ .These groupings form the basis of the new tones coming through in interiors and design more generally, for example in the latest wallcovering, furnishing and fabric designs from the leading designers and manufacturers. Consequently the new Tonal Trends palette will connect and flow with the other elements that make up a room, ensuring that however adventurous customers choose to be with their carpet design, a harmonious aesthetic will be achieved throughout the scheme. With such a wide choice of colour across three distinct piles,Tonal Trends offers customers the freedom to mix and match across the ranges and even to create different ‘zones’ within the same room using colour - or a different pile - for different activities; for example a cosy high-piled area within a sitting room for relaxed lounging or a dining area tiled in a different colour to define it within an open-plan living area. The British Wool column Westex colour introductions get boost of interest

Colour is on the increase – Rosa Rosa by Westex Carpets.

Could colour be making a comeback? John Snee, joint Managing Director at Westex Carpets comments that they had their best colour launch ever this year. The Yorkshire based company introduced several new shades to their Ultimate Twist Collection at Domotex 2009 in January including aubergine, some new greens, chicory and a new classic red and report that they are all selling well. The Westex Ultimate Twist Collection has an extensive colourbank of 120 colours in 8 different qualities. Made from 80% wool and 20% nylon, these carpets give a superb combination of performance and technical design. The carpets are produced from fine 2-fold yarn to prevent pile reversal, giving improved appearance retention, recovery & resilience.

John is pragmatic about the many shades of beige in the showroom. “Beige is still king of course and we have a wide selection of beiges. But there is a creeping-in of colour that is very evident.

“We have introduced many new colours over the years and have never had this kind of response. Colour is selling quicker than before and it is particularly significant when you consider that it is a quiet market.”

Marriott promotion continues for a second year

The British Wool Marriott promotion which ran from Autumn through to Spring has been judged and all winners will be announced at the launch of the new British Wool seasonal retailer promotion. All consumer winners will receive a voucher redeemable at a Marriott hotel for a short break for two people. Two lucky retailer winners will also receive this prize.

“We are seeing a steady support from good retailers for our incentive promotions – we are launching a new Marriott promotion at the NFS and we felt that highlighting winners from the previous year would be a good way to show that winning the prize is all about taking part,” said Irfan Khan, promotions manager at the BWMB. Marriot Winners will be announced with new retailer promotion

The new Marriott retailer promotion will be launched in September,

British Wool recommend WoolSafe cleaning products

British Wool always recommends WoolSafe when specialist carpet cleaning is required for a British Wool carpet. The company produce cleaning agents that are highly researched and tested and provide centralized access to a national network of partner companies. The company, which has been testing all types of carpet cleaning chemicals for over ten years launched a new website in March providing easy to navigate, simple information.

So, the BWMB was disturbed to hear that a recent ‘Which’ report, stated that specialist cleaning agents were unnecessary and that washing-up liquid was perfectly adequate for most stains. This has now been studied in detail by the WoolSafe team of technical experts after they decided to run a series of tests mirroring ‘Which’. These have shown this widely publicised and somewhat reckless statement to be wholly incorrect.

WoolSafe report that, “Washing-up liquid causes rapid and serious re-soiling on wool carpets and rugs and whilst may remove the stain, after a few days it will leave a darker, larger spot. Some of the solutions used by ‘Which’ are capable of causing colour migration bleeding from dark to light colours.”

“Lengthy research and development goes into formulating specialist chemicals which is why they perform much better and safer,” said Dr Agnes Zsednai,Technical Director at WoolSafe

Penthouse Carpets add new fashion shades to Stateside

Penthouse Carpets has added five new colours to Stateside, their popular 80/10/10, 50oz British Wool range. An 18 shade colourbank of plains, the range will now have a selection of natural grey tones to meet the current interior fashion trend.

New colours have been added to Stateside by Penthouse

“This is our second best selling range and we’re delighted with the new shades, which keep Stateside right up-to-the minute for consumers,” said Paul Speakman of Penthouse Carpets. New colour sampling is ready now and the Penthouse representatives will be visiting stockists to update the range in store.

Business news ‘Very surprising’ - flooring’s resilience in recession More than half of all UK floorcovering companies have achieved a strong or good financial rating despite the recession is the latest analysis by one of the industry’s keading business analysts,

A new study by Plimsoll Publishing looking into the financial state of the UK floor coverings industry has, despite the UK recession, awarded 434 of UK’s top 1000 Floor Coverings companies a strong financial rating for their outstanding financial performance. Plimsoll has rated each of the UK’s largest 1000 floor coverings companies into one of five ratings based on their overall financial performance.

43% made the ‘strong’rating - delivering excellent performance while a further 12% were rated as good. At the bottom end, Plimsoll classes 16% of companies as ‘caution’ due to their weakend state and says the future of 13% is now in doubt. David Pattison, Senior Analyst at Plimsoll, has the following view on the findings “It was no real surprise to see the high number of companies on the danger list, given the current economic crisis affecting the floor coverings industry.

“However we were very surprised to see the high number of excellent businesses making it on to the strong list. I think these firms have really upped their game in these difficult times and they are concrete proof that necessity is the mother of invention.” How the strong are surviving

During the latest financial year analysed, these 434 strong firms have boasted the following impressive performance statistics. Sales growth: On average these firms have seen sales increase by 4.4%.This figure is an impressive statistic in a market which is generally flat. This demonstrate the strongest players’ ability to take market share from their rivals

“We were very surprised to see the high number of excellent businesses making it on to the strong list. I think these firms have really upped their game in these difficult times.” Profit margins: For the strong companies, their profit margins are sitting at an average of 3.5%, as they have cut costs and used competitive buying to increase their bottom line. Levels of debt: Debts have all but been removed from these companies. Most are operating completely debt free, thus reducing their reliance on the banks and other lenders.

Efficiency / productivity: Big improvements in efficiency means these firms are now delivering over £138,000 sales per employee compared to others in the industry that struggle to deliver £125,000.This gives them a significant competitive advantage.

Pattison continues, “Obviously there are real concerns over the 284 firms rated as Caution and Danger, their futures look extremely uncertain.Their management are now operating under severe financial pressure where even normal trading is proving hazardous. Many of these firms seem likely to be sold off; they are at an extremely high risk of failure unless they turn their performance around fast.”

This special edition of the Plimsoll Analysis offers a unique insight into the changing financial performance of UK’s leading Floor Coverings companies. Each firm has been named, analysed and rated based on their latest financial performance. T 01642 626422
