Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE The WOOLSAFE Mark has gone Green! The WOOLSAFE Organisation has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal and EcoLogo in North America, to enable those WOOLSAFE approved products that are ecologically responsible to be recognised and promoted as such.

The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.

Regular Maintenance

Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.

Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Periodic Cleaning

When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approved products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package: WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.

General Rules for Spot Removal • Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth

• Scoop up or scrape off solids

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment – if unsure, use solvent first • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards • BLOT, do NOT rub

• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles • When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves. Protective treatments Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular cleaning is still required.

Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDER section.)

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size.Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc).To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match.

For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLES

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDING

The original carpet tile

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPS

This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.

8

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

• shedding • pulled loops

SPROUTING

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADING

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATIC

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc).

The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOL

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair.Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

THE STOCKLISTS July 2010

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’.This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONS

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.

The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

FLATTENING

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

SOILING

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave

sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.

T HE R EGENCY

Collection

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is BONDED Tip Sheared Level Loop Tip Sheared Level Loop Sheared Level Loop plain colours. a versatile, textured finish that is idealTipfor Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have not stitched into the backing in any way. Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home. THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

SAFE

DURABLE

Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency.

Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer. Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason.

Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Benefits

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Types

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired

THE STOCKLISTS July 2010

GET THE PICTURE We have just photographed two our exciting recent new range additions – the luxurious deep pile Chamonix from the Alpine Collection looks fantastic in a bedroom setting. Its four colourways are modern classic neutrals but we especially liked Edelweiss, a versatile and practical taupe shade. Bakerloo is a complete contrast – our latest striped addition to the ever-popular, competitively priced Tube Collection, this time in a narrow multi-stripe effect. Of the three colourways available, we’ve picked the fashionable Plum Alpine Chamonix to photograph and tried to take a fresh, young approach with living/dining settings, to break away from the classic stairs, hall and landing destination for stripes.

SAY HELLO TO ANOTHER GARY! This month we welcome another newcomer – and another Gary - to our sales team! Gary O’Boyle will be looking after Northern Ireland for us. “Jim Osborne has done a great job over the past few months but as our business in Northern Ireland is growing rapidly, we’ve realised we really need someone full time on the ground,” says national sales manager Gary Prophet. “Gary is an experienced carpet man and well-regarded in the region and we’re delighted he’s joining our team.” Says Gary, who has been selling carpets in Northern Ireland for 24 years (alongside his father before him and brother!) “Edel Telenzo is a forward thinking company with good products and design. It has an established customer base here, which I am looking forward to growing and developing.”

Bakerloo dining set

Bakerloo is also available in blacks and browns and Mulberry and, just to remind you, we’ve added the Mulberry and Plum colourways to our other Tube Collection multi-strip, Piccadilly. We have a variety of roomset shots and close ups which are available to all customers for their own marketing/PR use. Just call the office if you’d like a CD of these and all our other images and our logos. We’ll be featuring more images in our next edition of our occasional newsletter Floortalk, due out shortly.

COMING SOON More new options for our burgeoning contract market. Joining the plain cut pile option Aquarius soon will be Taurus, a cut pile two-tone design in 11 colourways. Like Aquarius it is also made from our excellent Edelon Protect polypropylene yarn with all its benefits of fade, bleach and stain resistance (coupled with a 10 year warranty).

STOCK UPDATE We are phasing out the 5 metre width option in Rembrandt due to low demand so please note this option will only be available while current stocks last.

We tick all the boxes!

Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to.

Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours.

A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line.

Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.

As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others.

the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality

Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.

Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of the product range to consumers with a market-leading modular POS system which they will deliver and design to suit your store.

100% recycled carpet Mohawk International takes old plastic bottles and turns them into beautiful, luxurious carpet... Hard to believe we know, but a plastic bottle you drink from today could one day become fibres in Mohawk’s carpet.

Make the most of the consumer’s love of all things green with the new Environmental Tombola featuring carpet manufactured from 100% recycled material

Polyethylene terephthalate (P.E.T) is the top quality resin required in the production of plastic drinks bottles. When recycled, it can be extruded into fibres that are far superior to lower-grade synthetic virgin fibres used in making other brands of carpet yarns. Mohawk recycles over 3 billion plastic bottles each year. By controlling every aspect of “Mohawk recycles over 3 billion the recycling plastic bottles each year.” process, Mohawk guarantees the highest standards of performance in its luxurious and beautiful carpet. From bottle to floor - that’s how we do it.

FlooringNews Makeover for Malabar One of Cormar Carpet’s longest running and best selling ranges is being revamped, recoloured and repositioned. Malabar Textures, a 100% Pure New Wool, loop pile carpet, takes the original dual-design Malabar collection to a new level. A modern ribbed texture design replaces the straight loop option to sit alongside the best selling weave design.

Contemporary new shades bring the twin-texture range bang up to date along with new-look point-of-sale graphics that emphasise the collection’s wool heritage and position it alongside the recently launched Natural Berber range.

Said marketing director David Cormack: “We believe the new design and colours along with refreshed POS put Malabar Textures in the same stable as our recently launched berber twist range and further strengthens our portfolio of modern naturals.” New shades of natural now spicing up the range include Carob, Sable, Ebony, Liquorice, Iron and Heron. The best selling Cottonwood and Oatmeal colours have been retained across a collection that now offers a broad bank of neutrals with eight shades on offer for each of the two designs.

Said David Cormack: “Customer reaction has been extremely positive – they really seem to like the bolder more fashionable colour palette and new image.”

Malabar Textures comes in a choice of 16 colour and style options and is offered in 4m and 5m widths. It retails at around £23 per square metre and is suitable for heavy domestic use. T 01204 881234

Golden silence ‘Silence is Golden’ is the message from Novostrat when promoting the acoustic performance benefits of their ‘top of the range’ underlay for wood and laminate floors, Sonic Gold Excel. Novostrat’s claim that for every floor and every budget there is an appropriate Novostrat underlay is supported by the wide range of underlays in the Novostrat product portfolio. From the extremely cost efficient ‘Graphite’ underlay for carpeted floors and the mid-range Sonic Classic, designed to work with underfloor heating systems, right through to Sonic Gold Excel, all are rated to have high performance benefits relative to their cost. Common to all Novostrat underlays is their polyethylene foam core which not only makes them highly durable but also very light in weight and therefore easier to manage, store, transport, and fit. Polyethylene is also a ‘Green’ product, being fully recyclable at the end of its long life and manufactured neither using nor producing harmful CFCs and halogens. Boxing clever When it comes to stunning textures and striking colours,Vorwerk Carpets has a strong reputation. And now with the Vorwerk Carpet Collection sample boxes, retailers can have quick and easy access to these beautiful carpets.

Capturing the shaggy texture of Evita, the diverse colour palette and velvet feel of Modena and the chunky loop of Mahdia as well as other on-trend ranges, the Carpet Collection boxes are perfect for the handson style purchase of carpet.

“Carpet is about feel and with the sample boxes, retailers and interior designers now have a quick and easy way for consumers to get to grips with the array of textures on offer from Vorwerk Carpets,” explains Ian Hammond, Sales Director UK,Vorwerk Carpets. “With the sample boxes carpets can be explored, colours and textures compared and decisions made and all upon a desktop, table or counter.”

For many retailers and interior designers, space is a premium and the sample boxes were conceived to alleviate this problem. By packaging samples in two handy boxes, the UK collection can be housed under a counter or in a cupboard, ready for quick and easy access whenever the need arises. Ian added:“Rather than committing to entire wall displays or having to find somewhere to store dozens of sample books, we have done whatever we can to make sure that retailers can take advantage of our trend-leading carpets without having to give-up other products and valuable space. The two sample boxes are an ideal first step into Vorwerk Carpets and we are confident that many will soon be upgrading to the striking tower.”

Contract cost cutter To answer an increasing market demand, leading sustainable modular flooring manufacturer InterfaceFLOR, has developed an exceptional value for money brand to give more people than ever the choice to use quality products with fresh designs at an affordable price.

Series.1 has been developed primarily with the flooring contractor market in mind. WILLIAM CLASSICS FROM RYALUX - 72 CONTEMP AND TEXTURES, CELEBRATING CLASSIC BRITISH S

News

GoodWeave winners Zixi Qu, first year Textile student from Loughborough University, is announced as the winner of the 2010 GoodWeave Rug Design Competition, after a lively and lengthy debate amongst the judges. The annual competition aims to raise awareness, amongst the designers of tomorrow, of the ethical issues concerning the rug industry. It attracted the highest ever number of entries, from a record number of universities and colleges, and the judges were unanimous in their praise of the outstanding design talent exhibited.

Second prize went to Alison D’Oyley, another student at Loughborough University studying Textiles, with a design reflecting architectural shapes. Third prize went to Jack Godden, first year Embroidery student at Manchester Metropolitan University, who is also the first ever male prize winner in the competition; he explored the organic shapes of an ingeniously folded paper design inspired by laces. Over the coming three months, the three winning designs will be made up into high quality wool and silk rugs by competition sponsors Jacaranda Carpets and WovenGround.com, and will then be on show at Decorex International in September, on the GoodWeave stand.

Decorex Marketing Manager, Hazel Willis is enthusiastic about the prospect of exhibiting the winning designs:“The competition is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their talents and showcase their ability, and Decorex is delighted to be able to support these young designers at the very beginning of their journey into the world of design”.

The winner, Zixi Qu explains her inspiration:“My initial research was based on natural forms developing into wildlife and birds, in particular. After experimenting with drawing birds in different positions, I found that having images of several birds allowed a greater creativity, with the interplay of shapes and curves. I chose birds in flight as the most interesting form, demonstrating power, activity, elegance and beauty. My colour palette is very neutral, because I feel it evokes a clean, soft, fresh and luxurious feel.” T : 07740 459279 www.goodweave.org.uk

Princely patterns Axminster Carpets has revitalised and expanded its contemporary Princetown collection with the addition of 14 new styles, including the striking Mondrian pattern in three tonal colour variations.

Mondrian’s staccato wide stripe combines with the signature berber fleck of the Princetown collection to create a carpet perfect for contemporary homes, balancing modern structured influences with the soft edge of natural tonal variations. The 100% pure new wool Mondrian is joined by Matisse, also in three colourways, and Picasso in eight shades. The new designs combine with existing Crest, Gem and Natural Plaid to form a stunning collection of contemporary patterned carpets.

“Many consumers associate patterned Axminster with interpretations of classical scrolls and floral designs, but the Princetown collection shows it is equally adept at modern geometric styles,” says Steve Upperton, Sales Director. “The berber fleck and natural colour palette give the Princetown collection a wide appeal and with patterns ranging from the subtle to bold, this range really has something for everyone.”

Rated suitable for Heavy Domestic use and available in 3’, 12’ and 15’ widths, the Princetown collection could be an ideal carpet to highlight the capabilities and beauty of wool carpet during National Wool Week, which takes place at the beginning of October.

The desire for wool is on the increase, as the market heads for a major promotional week during October with the consumer launch of The Campaign for Wool and there are already signs that wool and wool carpet is enjoying a renaissance. “At British Wool, we are seeing competitive bidding at auctions for the raw wool - and prices have significantly improved over the last six months,” Tim Booth, product development manager at the BWMB explained. “This is a combination of our marketing of British Wool and a general swing towards better quality fibres with a strong natural and environmental message. “British Wool is a product of the British sheep farmer and wool is grown in the United Kingdom, I think people generally respond very well to that message, which is why we have promoted the fibre as British Wool...origin is everything and that has had a significant impact.” The added benefits that wool carpets bring to the home are also a major focus for the BWMB, “We want retailers to understand the attributes that wool carpet has over and above other fibres. This is a fibre that breathes and therefore it has the ability to absorb humidity in the room – offering a level of temperate control.

Old colours stylishly revived by Kingsmead Carpets

Kingsmead are noticing a slow but steady movement away from exclusively natural colours with traditional favourites from the past such as gold, green, claret and plum becoming more popular. Introducing these shades to their New Vitronic Traditions, which has a colourbank of twenty and is a popular British Wool Classic manufactured in Great Britain, uses wool from British Spinners. General Manager Martin West comments, “In these difficult financial times we are conscious that a buy British mentality is becoming stronger from our consumer base. We receive excellent support from the British Wool Marketing Board in promoting our wool twist ranges and we feel the British Wool logo helps us differentiate our products to the consumer and is clearly added value as this trend continues.” Clare in a beautiful soft gold shade from the New Vitronic Traditions by Kingsmead Carpets

Shearing is a skill that the BWMB invest in to ensure that both the sheep and the wool is well cared for. About Wool is the British Wool guide to carpets and is available to retailers.

“The other key factor is safety – wool is naturally flame retardant and this offers superior safety to the home. Wool has a high nitrogen and water content and this means that it will not easily ignite and in fact this is why it is so often selected for hotels and public buildings. “British Wool definitely has unique resilience – perfect for the hall, stairs and main living areas – this is where footfall causes flattening and you need increased ‘bounce-back’ – the crimp in the British Wool breeds ensure that British Wool carpets have added durability under pressure,” said Tim. Retailers who want to know more about the fibre can contact the BWMB for a supply of the special British Wool for carpets brochure – about wool. Please e-mail on marketing@britishwool.org.uk

British Wool promotes skills of shearing wool

Countryside events play a huge part in the calendar of British Wool as it represents over 50,000 sheep farmers in the UK.This year British Wool is the main sponsor of the Golden Shears event at the Royal Welsh show held on 19th – 22nd July at Llanelwedd, near Builth Wells. This event attracts over 200,000 people and the international shearing competition will have teams from across the globe. Most of the British teams have been trained by the British Wool Marketing Board, which runs training courses across the country to ensure that shearing is a skill that meets the highest standards of animal husbandry and is a maintained on farms in the UK. “Shearing is the start of preparing the wool for the textile industry and we are proud of the fact that we train young shearers just as we train wool graders and maintain the hand-grading of wool; this is why we at British Wool offer such a high quality fibre,” said Ian Hartley, CEO at the BWMB.

Axminster updates online As part of its strategy to deliver the best levels of service to specifiers, contractors, retailers, end-users and consumers alike, Axminster Carpets has launched a new website that takes its online presence to a level rarely seen in the flooring sector.

The site delivers an online portal that is not only in keeping with Axminster Carpets’ new branding, but that also reflects the forward thinking and innovative approach to carpet production by the Devon-based manufacturer.

Capturing the essence of Axminster Carpets’ ‘Natural British Beautiful’ slogan, www.axminstercarpets.co.uk provides background on the company while reinforcing the quality carpets message so central to its brand ethos.

Online presence has now become a central part of any marketing strategy as Richard Lawrence, Marketing Manager, explains: “With roughly 70% of consumers using the internet for research before their purchase, having a good website is becoming a marketing prerequisite and we have had a significant online presence for several years. However, continual development is an integral part of our strategy and to reflect our new look we have overhauled the website and its content to provide improved SEO – great news for our network of retailers throughout the UK.”

“It is very easy to become lost in the multi-media forest when building a website. We have organised the site to make it as simple as possible for every user, whether contractor, consumer, retailer or specifier,” he said.

With a stockist by postcode search engine, inspirational photography and online viewable domestic and commercial brochures, the website has the necessary functionality and simplicity demanded by today’s modern internet user.

IVC campaigns for consumers The IVC Group has launched a consumer media campaign for its Avenue and Leoline brands to drive footfall to retailers nationwide. Using the high value of editorial appearances to reach consumers across the country, the IVC Group has employed an UK-based agency to liaise directly with stylists and journalists working in the home interests sector. The campaign will provide exposure in leading consumer magazines such as ‘Ideal Home’ and ‘House Beautiful’ and on popular TV programmes, as well as through leading home interior websites.

“Coverage in consumer magazines, on television and online can help to develop brand and product awareness and this campaign is an important part of our development strategy for both Leoline and Avenue,” comments Ortwin Top, Marketing Manager, IVC Group. “Working with a UK-based agency gives us the speed of response that is necessary to ensure a successful campaign and with a contact book full of journalists and stylists, we are expecting excellent levels of coverage for all Leoline and Avenue ranges.” The campaign will come in to full affect this Autumn and is part of an ongoing brand development and support strategy for both Leoline and Avenue brands.

Harrogate hits 100+ The strong momentum building behind the September trade show in Harrogate has been boosted after a “flood of bookings” following the withdrawal of the competitive event planned for the NEC (see page 46). The exhibitor list for the Harrogate Flooring Show now exceeds 100 – substantially ahead of the target organisers set themselves to make the show a success.

Key industry players had already backed Harrogate as the place to be this Autumn but the NEC move has led a flurry of new companies to sign up for space including flagship manufacturers such as Associated Weavers and Karndean.

‘Cottage’ with class Cavalier carpets have launched the latest addition to their wool collection with‘Woodland Heathers’ which gives a sophisticated feel to the ‘Cottage’ look. Offered in 35oz ‘Hamlet’, 45oz ‘Village’ and 55oz ‘Parish’, manufactured using 80% British Wool, 10% Polypropylene and 10% Polyester (Meltbond) yarns. A 5/32nd gauge construction and a unique double sheared finish offers extra heavy domestic performance. Samples and new point of sale material are being made available to retailers now. “I am delighted with the quality and quantity of support for the show,” said organiser David Wildman. “The trade always said they wanted Harrogate as the venue and the manufacturers have voted with their feet. It’s going to be a great show.

“I am also very relieved that visitors won’t have to make a crazy decision about which event to go to,” he added.

The Harrogate event opens on Sunday, September 5th and on the following Monday and Tuesday. David Cormack of Cormar commented: “Manufacturers have clearly shown their support for Harrogate. Now we need retailers to do the same and visit the event – it’s important that they make a positive effort to move the industry forward.” Other top exhibitors include Asiatic, Ulster, Lano,Victoria, Furlong, Abingdon, Edel Telenzo and Penthouse.

The organisers have also announced further ‘added value’ for visitors with three new seminars running in the Queens Suite Conference Area on Monday, September 7th carpet recycling, a British Wool Marketing Board presentation and a CFA seminar. T 01423 779967

Celeb architect signs up for Fun Fun On The Floor has signed up award-winning TV presenter and architect George Clarke to front the 2010 campaign and join the expert panel for the carpet industry.

“This is a great coup for the campaign,” said Steve Elliott, a fellow expert panelist and MD of Associated Weavers. “George will add a lot of impact and style to what we’re doing and he has in-depth experience of innovative interiors projects.”

George is best known for his work with Channel 4’s The Home Show and, more recently, Restoration Man – plus a host of other television credits and involvement with the Grand Designs Live show at London’s Excel Centre.

His own architectural practice - clarke:desai in London – has a reputation for highly creative, innovation design in residential, commercial projects and urban design projects around the world. He describes himself as “passionate about how design can transform our everyday lives.”

Fun On The Floor has started its third year of campaigning for carpet with the support of leading flooring manufacturers across the industry. Extensive activity covering advertising, internet, home interest magazines and retailer promotions is planned for the months ahead.

George will be joining the campaign’s expert panel which already includes such design luminaries as Danielle Proud, Andrea Maflin and Victoria Redshaw. As well as advising the campaign planners, this team participates in popular ‘Ask The Experts’ service online which offers interiors advice to carpet buyers. Big match for Floorwise Floorwise’s HyperLIFT underlay will be providing durability and underfoot comfort for thousands of fans at Aviva Stadium, the home of Ireland’s international rugby and football teams. Specified and installed by one of Ireland’s biggest flooring contractors, Crean Mosaics, some 7,500m2 of HyperLIFT underlay is being installed throughout the lower and premium concourse areas, corporate boxes and service areas.

The redevelopment of the famous Lansdowne Road ground, with a striking curvilinear roof the 55,000 seated capacity Aviva Stadium will become a stunning part of the Dublin skyline and an essential sporting and entertainment facility.

With extreme levels of foot traffic expected all-year round at the stadium, Crean Mosaics opted for the Heavy Contract Use rated HyperLIFT recycled polyurethane underlay. Suitable for both stretch fit and double stick installations, the underlay not only offers comfort and performance, but also ease of installation thanks to its exceptionally light roll weight.

“HyperLIFT has been a joy to work with,” comments Andrew Rooney, Crean Mosaics. “On a job as important and time-sensitive as this we not only need long term performance and reliability but also ease of installation. Flexible and light, HyperLIFT is easy to carry and goes down fast, making it ideal for the fast-paced nature of these type of installations.” At seven-mm thick, HyperLIFT weighs just 15.2kg for a 15m2 roll and is made from Floorwise’s Super High Density (SHD) recycled foam for outstanding levels of durability and which is shared by the thicker nine-mm HyperTREAD. With high levels of resilience, thermal insulation and acoustic absorption, Hyper underlays are also recyclable. T 01509 673974 www.floorwise.co.uk

Recycling ready for challenge

No half measures Recofloor, the UK’s first vinyl flooring waste take-back scheme, has signed up to the voluntary agreement Construction Commitments: Halving Waste to Landfill created by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) to reduce construction waste sent to landfill by half by 2012. More than 215 tonnes of vinyl flooring waste has already been collected since January 2009 under the Recofloor initiative, which was founded by two leading flooring manufacturers, Polyflor and Altro, to increase the recycling of waste vinyl flooring in the UK and Ireland.

The Carpet Recycling Challenge – 25% by 2015, is the theme of the second Annual Carpet Recycling UK Conference. Organised by Carpet Recycling UK, the conference will be held at The Institute of Engineering & Technology in Birmingham on Tuesday July 6 2010. Managed by Axion Consulting, Carpet Recycling UK is an industry-backed association at the forefront of research and development into new methods for recycling and reusing carpet. The conference will share thoughts and progress on efforts made to boost the current carpet recycling rate from 2% to 25% and speakers will address issues on how to stimulate investment and build sector capacity to meet the challenge.

Welcoming the move, Recofloor Project Manager Jane Gardner says: “As an established scheme that has gained wide recognition throughout the industry, Recofloor is uniquely positioned to fulfill its commitment as a sector body to working towards the common goal to halve construction waste to landfill by 2012. “The Recofloor collection service for vinyl flooring offcuts and uplifted vinyl flooring helps companies throughout the supply chain to fulfill their obligations to reducing the amount of waste to landfill.” Recofloor, which is administered by recycling specialist Axion Consulting has 220 members and over 30 drop-off sites UK-wide. T 0161 426 7731 www.axionconsulting.co.uk

As well as networking opportunities and a Question Time session hosted by a panel of industry experts, more than 100 delegates will hear disseminations of the latest research projects and how these are contributing to advances in carpet recycling.

Laurance Bird, Director and co-founder of Carpet Recycling UK, says the event will give both members and non-members of Carpet Recycling UK the chance to share expertise and knowledge: He says: “At just 2%, carpet recycling is still in its infancy in the UK.This event offers businesses across the supply chain the chance to hear about breakthroughs, successes and how they can work together to achieve this target.” T 0161 440 8325 www.carpetrecyclinguk.com www.axionconsulting.co.uk 44

Outbreak of sanity for show biz by David Spragg There will be no National Floor Show at the NEC this year. Organisers UBM have pulled the September event citing "tough economic and industry conditions" and will run the show alongside their showcase Interiors exhibition at the NEC for four days between January 23 and 26, 2011. The Harrogate Flooring Show will now have September to itself when it opens for business on Sunday 5th and runs to Tuesday 7th.

NEC organisers UBM have struggled to build sufficient momentum for their September show with an exhibitor list that was approximately half that of Harrogate. Finally, the company decided the numbers just wouldn’t add up.

“We had some good people on our list and it could have worked in September. Our job is to give the industry maximum ROI and the new approach makes that much easier.” Interiors show director Andrew Vaughan has promised to “bring flooring exhibitors to the audience” when he adds the sector to the January interiors show that attracts 25,000 visitors – more than 7,000 of which have already expressed an interest in rugs and flooring.

He admits that the reverse – “bringing an audience to the exhibitors – was looking increasingly unlikely for the September event at the NEC. “We had some good people on our list and it could have worked but I didn’t think 50 exhibitors was a figure we could build a show on and it would have been difficult generating an audience for such a show.”

Flooring will take up Hall 2 at the NEC – some 2000m2 – and UBM say almost 40 exhibitors have expressed an interest so far including flagship exhibitors such as Brintons. The show will lose it’s individual identity as the National Floor Show – becoming a colour-coded branded component of the Interiors event – located between the soft furnishings, accessories and lighting sections of the show.

The move will be welcomed by many in the trade who saw competitive shows as the last thing the industry needed in a difficult trading environment. David Cormack of Cormar commented: "We’re absolutely delighted with this news. It always made sense to have only one trade show dedicated to flooring in September and we hope everyone will now feel they want to be part of it.” The Interiors event has the potential to bring a new audience to flooring from the 25,000 visitors who attend the show each year. Interiors has almost 600 exhibitors across furniture, soft furnishing, beds, interior design and lighting. It is a four day event, compared to the three days of previous flooring events. Sentiment has continued strongly in favour of Harrogate and more than 80 exhibitors including the industry's leaders are set to show with many more in discussions.

Harrogate Flooring Show organiser David Wildman commented: “I am very pleased that visitors are not now being asked to choose between two shows in September – that was a crazy situation for the trade and I think UBM have made the right decision and I wish them good luck for the event in January. The trade has got what it wanted – a stand-alone flooring exhibition in Harrogate in September – and we’re delighted with the support we continue to receive from all the major players in our business.” Amid the turmoil in the show business, manufacturers have been increasingly keen to support the Cranmore Park show organised by Flooring One in Solihull in June each year. This is a members-only event for floor buying groups and it is expected to grow into a substantial three day event in 2011. 46

July 2010

“We intend that the flooring participation will be the best of the best. We’ll keep it a little exclusive to attract the quality interiors buyers”, he said. Asked if UBM should have gone for the January event from the start, Andrew said: “Maybe yes. Initially that was what we wanted to do but the industry said September – and we still think the NEC was the right place to do it in September.

“Our job is to give the industry maximum ROI and the new approach makes that much easier. We will take the exhibitors to the audience.”

Andrew doesn’t accept criticism that UBM handled the situation badly after announcing the switch from Harrogate. “It is disappointing how the story has been told. We did talk to people and we have listened. I don’t think we could have done it any differently but there has been a very emotional response.”

UBM's Andrew Vaughan said: "Due to tough economic and industry conditions, and in consultation with the marketplace, we have decided to re-position National Floor Show within our portfolio’s flagship event. As experienced exhibition organisers, our focus has always been to deliver return on investment for our exhibitors, so we have decided to offer flooring companies the opportunity to exhibit at the UK’s largest trade interiors show."

“I feel very positive about January and we have had good support. It is an exciting opportunity for us and we will be marketing it very strongly.Visitors will be able to cross the halls to visit the flooring section and there is excellent potential for crossover within the interiors industry.

The Wool Benefits Series from Wools of New Zealand

Natural Comfort Nature has perfected the wool fibre as an ideal raw material for soft floorcoverings. The natural comfort and sensuous feel of wool carpets enables people to be relaxed and at ease in their home. The deeper the pile of the carpet, the more sumptuous and luxurious the effect.

Sensory Comfort

Wool is soft to touch and its natural resilience makes it feel good and safe to walk, sit and lie on.

Sound Enhancing

Studies have found that wool carpets can reduce noise by up to 55%. The porous surface of the carpet means that sound waves penetrate into the pile, rather than being reflected back to reverberate around the room. Concentration Whatever the location – home, work or leisure – the good acoustics provided by a wool carpet will help project a clear sound through the room and absorb other noises that could be distracting. It has been shown that background noise can reduce concentration and productivity by over 80%.

Climate Control The crimp of the wool fibre traps tiny pockets of air, creating a barrier which prevents heat loss through the floor and regulates the indoor temperature. This natural insulation reduces draughts in winter, while helping to give the room a comfortably cool feel in summer.

Balancing Humidity Wool’s unique structure not only repels liquid spills, but provides a natural buffer for moisture, able to absorb up to 30% of its own weight in water vapour without feeling wet or even damp. A wool carpet effectively prevents condensation and dampness.

Ambience A wool carpet enhances the ambience and natural feel of a room. The naturally beautiful attributes of New Zealand wool provide colour and styling opportunities synonymous with visual comfort and relaxation.

Comfort Underfoot The coiled structure of the wool fibre gently cushions and absorbs footsteps, relieving the stress on your body, while the pile provides both traction and stability to create a secure surface. Comfort when standing is enhanced as the body’s natural stability is supported through a more gentle contact surface underfoot. from The Stocklists

Relaxation Wool carpet will create a high level of comfort by improving your home’s acoustics and reducing unwanted sound.

Sound Blocking Reduction of noise transmitted between floors depends on the frequency waves of the sound. The millions of fibres in a wool carpet vary in length, diameter and crimp pattern which absorb sound over a wide range of frequencies, reducing sleep disturbance and noise distraction from other rooms. Child Friendly Wool carpet provides the ideal floor surface to assist children learning to crawl and walk, while its softness and resilience ensures their safety and gives them confidence to play and explore, vital to your child’s health and social development.

Why Reflex? Never has there been a more critical time for flooring companies to operate as efficiently and effectively as possible. When competition is tough and margins are low, everyone has to go the extra mile to minimise overheads and maximise customer service. Reflex Data Systems are helping flooring manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to do just that.

Following on from twenty years as market leaders for software solutions in the textile sector, the company took the logical decision four years ago to apply their expertise and experience to the flooring sector. The fully integrated, flooring-specific ‘Caftex’ system was launched after working closely with Flanagan Flooring based in Northern Ireland, who had previously used a flooring software solution and developed their own bespoke system with limited success.

businesses, and the personal relationships that develop between our staff and theirs are key to the success of the implementation and ongoing support and development of the systems. We appreciate that deciding on a new system provider is a difficult and often confusing task, and we are acutely conscious of the level of investment in both time and money that companies are making with this decision. We play a critical role in the day to day running of our customers’ operations, and we have to have a philosophy of continuous improvement to meet their needs going forward. Our customers expect a lot from us, and we have to live up to their expectations.”

Over the last four years Caftex has been installed at eight flooring businesses including a manufacturer, distributors, and retailers and is establishing itself as the system of choice in the flooring sector. At the heart of the Caftex system is roll level stock, cutting table management, van loading and routing, retail EPOS integration and paperless warehouse distribution.

Reflex has also recently developed a web-based B2B trading solution in close partnership with Fells Carpets to provide real-time online ordering, stock enquiry and a variety of other features for a complete customer service solution. Started in 1987, Reflex is privately owned and employs just under 30 staff at the head office in Beverley, East Yorkshire. Over the years the company’s range of offerings has grown in response to customer demand, so that it can now provide everything required for the implementation of a new system, from hardware (Reflex supply servers as IBM Business Partners and also provide state-of-the-art radio frequency barcode scanning solutions, printers, etc), to third party software (they are Microsoft Certified Partners and are resellers of a range of anti-virus and anti-spam solutions), to consumables such as labels and printer ribbons.

With the new web-based B2B product to enable flooring companies to offer online ordering and stock checking currently attracting a lot of attention, it seems that Reflex Data Systems are set to continue with their increasing popularity in the flooring sector.

However, the specialist software and supporting services are not seen as the end of the story in how Reflex judges its success; it is the relationship that Reflex has with their customers that brings them real pride. Managing Director, Trevor Robinson, comments: “The most important aim for us is to do a good job for our customers. UK challenges Euro timber Two brothers are challenging continental manufacturers with a comprehensive range of hand-finished engineered timber made in the UK.Timber flooring has come a long way in the last decade but needs to keep pace with the changing demands of today’s customers who require greater choice when it comes to the finished look of their floor.

Many people who choose a wood floor do so for the natural look of the timber, however, over recent years the demand for different colours and finishes has prompted companies to review their offerings with the lead being taken in Continental Europe.

A UK based family company, AZCO Interiors, has developed a locally manufactured range of timber flooring called Artwood which is available in over 500 finishes with new ranges being added to meet changing demands. By listening to and involving interior designers, architects and end customers both locally and at national trade shows, Artwood has been developed to meet both current and future trends. Whether the desired look is contemporary or classic, Artwood aims to provide customers with what they want at an affordable price, all from a local UK source. Artwood is the largest selection of timber flooring in the UK.

One of the most important components of a timber floor, and surprisingly the area least talked about, are the finishing technique and products which have been used to finish the floor. Artwood floors are all hand-finished using traditional techniques allowing greater artistic input and therefore the ability to produce a wider range of bespoke finishes that would not be possible when using machines. The method is designed to enhance the natural beauty of the timber, rather than covering it, and allows more creative designer options. More know-how per m2 Uzin has opened its new, state of the art Uzin Technical Forum as an important step in the ongoing technical customer support.

“We have long been known for our ‘on site’ technical abilities - our team of area managers and technical managers have been supporting the industry on job sites across the country over many years”, states Martin Cotterill, Managing Director of Uzin Ltd. “Our product systems are known for being innovative, cost effective and because we highly engineer our systems, they could be considered “fail-safe” when used correctly, and with our new Forum we really are offering more “know how per square metre”. The brands of Uzin, Pallmann and Wolff will combine their abilities at the new Technical Forum, these three brands share the same values of quality and innovation and we will be able to offer a system of transfer of “know how” in a way that is unique in the flooring industry.

The new Uzin Technical Forum is not just a training school or academy, it is also a place where flooring specialists can visit to expand their knowledge and experience. It will not replace the Uzin`s on-site support or hands-on training, it is a place for the exchange of information and most importantly ideas. from The Stocklists

Quality shines through

Strong support for Solihull show Flooring One’s exceptional show is now a key event in the flooring industry’s marketing calendar which is well-timed for exhibitors to launch new ranges ahead of the Autumn buying season and to take the retailer temperature at the mid-point in the year. It is held at the purpose-built exhibition centre Cranmore Park in Solihull – the headquarters of Flooring One’s parent organisation AIS – before an invited audience of buying group members.

AWARD WINNERS Flooring One makes awards each year to suppliers who their members feel have delivered exceptional service, presented by Glenn Harding (pictured above). The 2010 winners were:

Such is the success of the show that Flooring One is working with other buying groups to extend the audience across a wider membership – a move warmly welcomed by manufacturers who get maximum return for a modest investment in relatively small stand spaces. Everyone pays tribute to the highly professional organisation that the Flooring One team brings to the occasion.

Carpet Supplier of the Year

Following the disarray in the market for the main national flooring exhibitions this year, this Solihull event looks increasingly likely to raise its profile and extend its reach in the UK flooring sector.

Cranmore Park Show 2010 Taking the temperature – mid-2010 Key trends in flooring that were much in evidence at the Cranmore Park flooring show were:

• the focus of higher end product • the growing importance of POS • the revival of colour - and greige is the new beige Chasing higher quality sales Despite talk of 2010 as the “11-month year” after the dismal January the trade endured and continuing worries about how Government cut-backs and tax changes are affecting the economy, most manufacturers seem optimistic about trading and report steady business in the year-to-date.

Associated Weavers Associated Weavers are showing smart attention to detail with a new range of good-looking lecterns which accommodate the four big best sellers: California Dreams, Natural Berbers, Harvest Heathers and the Perfect Twist Collection. And now all these ranges have a 2.5m option in addition to the 2, 3, 4 and 5 metre widths to give extra efficiency for planning installations with stairs. Also on show, was AW’s chunky new York Twist which is just starting to go out to retailers now. “The cleanest, fine polypropylene twist we’ve ever done,” says AW’s Steve Elliott, pictured above right with Jonathan Davies. T 01422 431100 www.awe.be

But most noticeable is that many of the major suppliers are looking to the higher quality market to support the sales budget. The top end sector has done well during the recession but it is a noticeable trend that more and more products are being launched into the sector – denser, heavier, higher quality ranges. While entry-level flooring has fared OK, it is the middle market where results have been disappointing, where the recession has reduced volumes of course. The current focus on quality is to be welcomed if it represents more opportunity among retailers to trade up and some enthusiasm amongst better-off consumers to be traded up. But the alternative explanation is that too many products may be chasing business in a buoyant but limited sector of the market.

POS – retail ‘real estate’ Substantial investment in higher quality point-of-sale systems seems almost universal across the major manufacturers this year with retailers spoilt for choice with high-quality units. POS is described as the manufacturers “real estate” on the high street but it’s high cost (plus the merchandising effort and sampling which goes with it) means that companies can’t afford to get it wrong for retailers. Clean, modern displays with sharper lines and less clutter is the order of the day with metal and clear acrylic much in vogue. Close attention is being paying to maximising the impact in the smallest footprint. Flooring One, Axminster, Ryalux, Cavalier and Associated Weavers have made conspicuous investment in new units and Brockway have launched new look branding for the company on their displays. Furlong Flooring made a massive impact with all-new POS units incorporating video – even on their lecterns (see page 68).

All the greige!

Axminster Axminster sales director Steve Upperton (above) reported “very positive feedback” for their new display units – a highly attractive creation by POS experts T&E which follows on from the company’s brand overhaul last year. The units carry the three flagship ranges of Moorland Heathers, the Devonia Collection and Simply Naturals. Axminster also launched Princetown, a contemporary berber with fresh new designs styled on the artists Mondrian, Picasso and Matisse in 100% wool.

Colour is coming back – not just in the marketing hype but in real consumer behaviour with stronger colours including plum/aubergine, reds and blues doing well. A new term is gaining currency in carpets – “greige”, the grey beiges that seem to have struck a chord with consumers looking for something with a more contemporary look than the standard warm beiges.

Adam Carpets Adam Carpets used the Flooring One show to debut a contemporary new colour palette place for its Fine Worcester Twist, an 80/20 which uses a bright new yarn to get lighter, cleaner colours. Florentine has a clever overtufted construction to give a textured effect to classic scrolls and floral designs and the range has undergone a colour makeover plus adding a new Rosa design. The continuing popularity of stripes also encouraged Adam to add six new colours to Castlemead Velvet Stripe. T 01562 829966 wwwadamcarpets.com

Ryalux Ryalux are also involved in a major roll-out of their new POS system which aims to present a “one-stop shop” for retailers from the clean, open style of entry-level Pownall ranges around the £20m2 mark through to the sumptuous “Ultimate” collection, bespoke at £100m2. In between are the best-sellers including Simply Ryalux, William Classics, V&A and the Naturals Collection. These core ranges are now presented with “mood board” graphics to give consumers inspiration to see the carpets as part of a wider interior design. T 0845 6528811 www.ryalux.com

Bondworth

Louis De Poortere have a striking new collection called Colourhouse which brings together 100% fine wool ranges co-ordinated in four colour “ambiances” across a broad stripe, narrow stripe, plains and a flatweave. A 70cm runner is also included. The colour sets are reds, beiges, monochrome and multi-colour. “We are beginning to see a bit more movement away from beige,” says LDP’s Alan Russell (pictured above). “The multi-colour ambiance is particularly striking and we’re getting a very good reaction to it.”

Bondworth is at your service 24/7 – you even get sales director Eamonn Prescott (above) on the case day and night if you sign up to the company’s new VIP club launch in June. “It’s all about service and we are trying to go that bit further,” says Eamonn. “We want to work closely with our customers and keep in touch.” The VIP club promises “service beyond your expectations” with guarantees on delivery and complaint handling, discounts on re-orders and cut-lengths and zealous communication including real-time availability updates on Facebook and Twitter.

Brockway Brockway is undergoing something of a transformation this year – the first signs of which are a new logo and a clean, modern monochrome design approach to branding - don’t worry, the badger’s still there, but looking a little more hungry for business! “There are a lot of new things happening at Brockway,” says commercial manager Steve Glover (above). “We have a fresh, new marketing look and a more contemporary feel. Mohawk Mohawk have a “phenomenal story to tell” says Howard Lindsay – and it’s all about SmartStrand, the synthetic fibre that is more than a third corn oil. The fibre is outselling nylon in the US and is building momentum in the UK. The positioning looks perfect – it’s cheaper than nylon and top-end wool, has a woollike feel and is almost bombproof for not crushing and for stain resistance. The company started by offering rolls only but strong demand from independents has let them offer a cut-length service too. “We want to make this carpet as easy as possible for retailers and we’re getting a very good response,” says Robbie Thomson. The Carpet Foundation’s spring campaign has been in full swing with exciting new creative adverts and a major PR campaign in the consumer press which the Foundation says will reach more than 10 million consumers a month. A second wave is planned from September onwards and will coincide with plans for Wool Week also. “This year, potentially, will be our most effective campaign,” says Rupert Anton (pictured above). “The creative work is very strong and the campaign has more impact than ever.” He emphasised the growing importance of the Foundation’s website which helps consumers with what to buy and where to buy. Interfloor Duralay’s eye-catching “campaign for real underlay” has gone from strength to strength this year with the proposition of “100% boingability” of quality rubber underlay. Eight out of ten consumers preferred the high perceived value of rubber underlay, they say. But because retailers and fitters also like a choice, parent company Interfloor has just launched a firmer new top-end polyurethane product Seventh Heaven Contract 9 – based on the current Terra Firma range but with a stiff paper backing. “We’re never known for standing still,” says Northern sales director Neil Valentine. “But I don’t think anyone understood how fast we were prepared to run to give the consumer – and the retailer - what they want in this tough market.” Making its debut at the Flooring One show was the stunning multi-screen video presentation on wall displays and even lecterns. Small flat screens displays have been built into the graphic displays to attract consumers to the stands and then inform them on product performance - and so help retailers make the sale to a more informed and enthusiastic consumer. Two special programmes have been created – one to cover the wool story from field to floor and the other to demonstrate the features and benefits of polypropylene products. “We have been overwhelmed by the response to these POS initiatives,” said Neil, “and we are working flat out to deliver this exciting new concept to retailers this Summer.” The latest range unveiled at the show, was Regency’s new Carleton, a sister product to Broughton Twist which was launched last December as part of the company’s new wool collection. Carleton is an 80/20 berber syle British Wool twist manufactured in the UK which is available in four and five metre widths and in a 40 oz and 50 oz option. T 01772 696 787 www.furlongflooring.co.uk

Flower on Flooring Pile drivers

BrontĂŤ Shag Pile

The enduring popularity of shag pile carpet and rugs has encouraged many suppliers to develop their offerings further, becoming increasingly more adventurous within the design process. With the forthcoming Harrogate Flooring Show providing the impetus for the latest round of developments, a number of new 'shaggy' options will be seen for the first time, further endorsing their enduring appeal.

Asiatic Carpets has seen demand for plain shag pile rugs grow in recent years and states that requests for 'new techniques and colours is unwavering', providing further encouragement for the company to introduce more options. The company reported its fine polyester Whisper remains its best seller and new colours of teal, violet and navy blue will be introduced. At the other end of the company's textured scale, Dumroo continues to grow and new shades will be added to this quality.

Asiatic Whisper Espresso

'The same thing is happening in sizes where the initial 120 x 170cm standard has being surpassed by 120x160 and now 110x160 or even 100x150cm are common as products are engineered to hit a price point with size being of secondary importance,' he continued. 'There have been some recent value added developments such as a move to 7cm pile height, but the best way of bringing new sales to the sector is with new colours, as witnessed by the success in recent months of greens and blues and a move into lilacs and berry colours for this autumn.' Known for its high quality customer made products, BrontĂŤ Carpets Ltd offers a 100% wool Shag Pile range that provides a choice of four different weights of 58, 62, 96 and 120oz.The company stated it can also produce bespoke qualities to match other weights of choice. These qualities are additionally available in any colour through BrontĂŤ's special dye service and in any width up to 12m wide with no joins.

The company's latest shag pile offering is Edge, described by sales and marketing director Jeremy Nichols as: 'A fine polyester shaggy in tonal stripes, it is an exciting and vibrant range featuring the classic best selling colours and also some new brighter tones. It will be available from August. For the Harrogate Flooring Show we will also be launching a comprehensive package of machine made shaggy rugs.'

Maintaining the rugs focus, Robert Witherington of McThree stated: 'In the machine woven rug market, shaggy products remain the single biggest sector and whilst the overall rug market has struggled, shaggy rugs are now such an important component of sales that many retailers with limited display space are offering nothing else. The price of the success is that Turkish imports in particular (helped by favourable exhange rates) have been used to target the initial 5cm pile height resulting in products of 4 and even 3cm such that the definition of a "shaggy" rug is much looser than it was.

Associated Weavers is another that has announced the launch of a new shag pile option in the form of New Eton, made with thicker 100% polypropylene yarn and available in 12 colours. It will include a 10 year warranty and is suitable for heavy domestic wear locations, the company stated. It is available in 4m width and is Associated Weaver's latest addition to its established Stainaway shag pile range. Further options such as L or T shapes are also available to further reduce waste. The company reported: 'Shag pile carpets have always been popular during our 28 years. Recently we have seen a trend for brighter colours of shag pile both in carpets and rugs.We are currently developing a new style of shag pile using different yarn blends that will be available later in the year. We are sure this will be an exciting addition to our already successful Shag Pile range.'

Edel Telenzo Alpine Chamonix bedroom

Lesley Inman, operations manager for Edel Telenzo Carpets UK, told Stocklists: 'Telenzo Carpets has always been known for its tufted loop pile carpet but since the merger with Edel, we’ve been able to expand our offering to other types and now offer some really special, top-end deep pile (as we prefer to call them!) options.' The company's latest introductions include Verdi and Chamonix, the former made from 100% polyamide PA6.6 yarn and offered in a broad palette of 12 lustrous colours. Chamonix is made from 100% two ply New Zealand wool in four shades, including Rock (a charcoal), Bird (dark brown), Edelweiss (a taupe) and Mont Blanc (cream).

'Both these newcomers are being really well received by our customers, proving there is a market out there both for luxury carpets and for deeper pile options!' Inman concluded.

Among the hand-crafted, bespoke range of carpets from Ryalux, its Ultimate Collection includes 12 shag pile qualities. Made from top quality New Zealand wool these are available in any shade and any width up to 7m, to provide extensive interior design options. The company states that this includes three sumptuous, plain options, including its best selling shagpile Ultimate 9. 'And for retro style with a contemporary twist, there is also an amazing two tone shagpile with built-in wow factor!' Its two exclusive woolsilk shag piles also feature fine Oriental silks, creating a subtle texture and a sophisticated tonal stripe, designed in a series of exotic, opulent colours. All of these ranges have been designed in an array of superb, contemporary colours, but for customers with more specific requirements, Ryalux can match any colour – from a fabric or wallpaper, in fact any object, enabling the customer to choose a luxurious carpet to suit their individual taste and style.

Ian Hammond, UK sales director,Vorwerk Carpets, said: 'Shaggy styles have become more technical than those of old with different thicknesses, twists and lustre of yarn providing extra interest to the super long pile. Our Corona and Fabula carpets capture this trend and typify our approach to doing things a little differently. Corona’s twocolour twist comes in 22 colours covering the spectrum.' Fabula combines a short thick matt yarn with a thin super-long glossy yarn to create a striking texture. This was achieved through the use of polyamide fibres and also includes a choice of nine colours. 'That really allows us to exploit the textural and visual qualities of carpet and present them in an extremely soft, hardwearing and easy to maintain carpet,' Hammond concluded. Support grows for Wool Week The announcement of a National Wool Week beginning October 11th, supported by HRH The Prince of Wales, has come as welcome news to The WoolSafe Organisation.

As the leading independent authority on the maintenance and care of wool and wool-rich carpets and rugs,The WoolSafe Organisation is looking forward to wool’s profile being raised and with involvement from both John Lewis and Marks & Spencer, the organisation expects consumers to become even more focused on the benefits of wool.

“There is no doubt that wool carpets are the definition of luxury within the home,” says Paul Bakker, Managing Director. “But few homeowners completely understand that they can maximise the return on investment and keep a carpet looking newer longer by ensuring it is cared for correctly. Therefore, we hope that National Wool Week will help to change this, allowing The WoolSafe Organisation to put its message to a wider audience.”

Famed consumer publisher, Condé Nast with titles such as ‘House and Garden’ and ‘World of Interiors’ has also pledged its support to National Wool Week and with other publishing houses and media channels likely to cover the event,The WoolSafe Organisation is confident of increased exposure for the correct maintenance of wool carpet. “With HRH The Prince of Wales wanting to see a return to wool carpet over synthetic carpet and wood flooring, we must educate the consumer that if cared for properly, wool carpet can represent a much more rewarding investment. Wool provides improved indoor air quality and acoustics as well as underfoot comfort, warmth and great looks for years to come,” concludes Paul Bakker. T 0800 731 5688

F. Ball MD heads BASA

As Chairman, James also represents BASA at the FEICA (association of European adhesives and sealants manufacturers) to ensure that a good relationship between the two associations.

The title of ‘Inspirational Woman of the Year’ goes to Wendy Shorter of Wendy Shorter Interiors for changing the face of training and qualification standards in the upholstery and soft furnishings sector.

The winners were announced at an awards luncheon held at Furniture Makers’ Hall in London last month. In addition to the two main awards, a further surprise presentation – a Lifetime Achievement Award – was made to Norma Kerry, md of Parker and Farr. “Some truly outstanding women from right across the furnishing sector were nominated for the awards,” said Manchester Furniture Show boss Theresa Raymond. It was her idea to hold the awards and Theresa has worked with the Furnishing Industry Trust (FIT, formerly the FTBA) to organise the awards and luncheon from which all profit will go to the trust.

Other finalists to be honoured at the awards included publisher Joanne Miller, co-owner of Interiors Media, who established a leading trade title for the interiors sector despite launching it in the depths of a recession T 020 7256 5954 72

1500 reasons to celebrate F. Ball and Co. Ltd. is celebrating the first anniversary of its successful Contractor Loyalty Card. Since the scheme was established, over 1500 members have reaped exclusive rewards, including 2.5% cash back on F. Ball products and priority booking on courses at the company’s newly opened training centre.

Cash back on all F. Ball products continues to be the most popular benefit of the scheme. To date, F. Ball has received over 1,300 cash back claims, which in value terms, account for a third of the company’s business. In addition, ten randomly selected Contractor Loyalty Card members picked up a 42-inch Panasonic television in celebration of the scheme’s launch in July 2009. Since then, F. Ball has given away seven rugged Makita site radios and four 32-inch Samsung televisions to winners of the scheme’s popular online spot the ball competition. Paul Berrett of C.S. Flooring in Romford, was one of the lucky winners of the spot the ball competition: “It’s a great scheme. I was chuffed to win the radio but the biggest benefit for us is definitely the cash back. We’ve received two cash rebates so far, totaling around £700. We use F. Ball products a lot, so it’s good to get something back. It makes a big difference and helps us to maximise our profits. We would be delighted if we could claim 2.5% cash back on all the products we use.”

The F. Ball Loyalty Card is available to all flooring contractors. Registration is simple and free-of-charge, with application forms available from F. Ball wholesalers, through the F. Ball website, www.fball.co.uk, or by contacting F. Ball on 01538 361 633. Once registered, contractors will receive a personal loyalty card and details allowing access to a members-only website at www.fballrewards.co.uk. T 01538 361 633
