Multi-Level Loop

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 5

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

Associated Carpet Group www.smartercarpets.co.uk Contact: Richard Moore Tel: 01942 825520 rjmoore65@googlemail.com rmoore@smartercarpets.com

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter

• shedding • pulled loops

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 10

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS July 2014

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

britishwool.org.uk 18

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Greater London, Surrey, Kent, Middlesex, East & West Sussex John A Constable T: 01622 685397 M: 07836 734322 E: john@jcagencies.co.uk

The latest additions to the Edel Telenzo wool carpet portfolio are Bloomsbury and Harrow, a beautiful textured loop and a tip sheared coordinate.

Yorkshire & North Lincs John Alsop T: 01904 762471 M: 07860 572220 E: alsopagencies@yahoo.co.uk Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset Brendan Hart M: 07850 130221 E: a.b.hart@btinternet.com Lincs, Leics, Northants, Notts, Derbyshire, North East Jim Osborne M: 07738 642934 E: j.osborne@edeltelenzocarpets.co.uk

The array of garden squares in Bloomsbury formed the inspiration for a beautiful textured loop in 100% 3-ply New Zealand wool, showing a subtle checkered pattern. Bloomsbury is one of Edel Telenzo’s most luxuriously thick carpets. A tip sheared coordinate, Harrow, is also available. Tip shearing the highest of the loops has resulted in a subtle stripe and gives Harrow a velvet, almost ‘Wiltonesque’ look and feel. The six natural colours, in which both carpets are available, are elegant and perfect for any sophisticated interior.

NEW: UK stockholding – huge service enhancement Edel Telenzo are pleased to confirm an agreement with Alliance (Kidderminster) to provide all aspects of stocking, cutting and logistics, for all ranges, effective September 1st. Moving stock from the head office in the Netherlands to the UK is an important, strategic step, underlining the market’s importance to the company and allowing the company to be as competitive as anyone in the UK market place with regards to delivery. From September, Edel Telenzo will be able to deliver 2 days a week to all main conurbations; delivery to outlying regions will take between 3-5 days. Phil Hartley, CEO Edel Telenzo UK: “This is a very significant and positive strategic step for the company. It will allow us to be amongst the most competitive in terms of delivery in the UK, further enhancing the high service levels that we already provide.”

Natural combination

Combining two natural flooring materials to give the best of both worlds, Linocork from Granorte brings a unique aesthetic to the home, perfect for making a contemporary style statement.

Featuring a linoleum surface with the acoustic, thermal and comfort benefits of an agglomerated cork base and integrated cork underlay, Linocork breathes new life into a once hugely popular domestic flooring material, introducing it to a new design-conscious audience. In a range of traditional marbleised and linear linoleum looks, as well as a palette of solid shades that are ideal for maximum impact in LinocorkUNI, the floor comes in a tile format and with uniclic, making it suitable for DIY installation. Featuring Microban antibacterial protection and with a 15-year residential warranty, Linocork comes with JointShield edge protection to resist prolonged exposure to standing water and helping to create a more impervious floor finish. Made from renewable ingredients including linseed oil, pine rosin, cork dust and wood flour, linoleum is enjoying a renaissance as it offers consumers an easy to look after floor that is both good for the environment and indoor air quality. Combined with the advantages of another natural material in cork, the result has positive wide and immediate environmental benefits.

A sense of success

“At Granorte we are focused on providing residential and commercial grade floors that utilise the benefits of natural materials and our Linocork collection is the perfect epitome of this attitude,” comments Paulo Rocha, Granorte. “By using cork and linoleum to create a floor that is hardwearing, and easy to maintain as well as that provides acoustic, thermal and comfort benefits; we are proving that floors that employ natural materials can perform just as well as synthetic materials and with the many advantages that using nature’s renewable and safe resources brings.” T 01785 711 131

Pattern statement

Axminster Carpets has launched its Royal Borough Wilton range, showcasing further innovation in design and particularly striking patterned carpet with its range of styles, colours, and weave types.

Continuing Axminster Carpets’ reputation for beautiful, natural wool carpets, Royal Borough is made from 100% pure new wool sourced carefully from British sheep. The Royal Borough Wilton range features three different types of yarn in a variety of designs and colourways, showcasing excellence in design and manufacturing. In keeping with Axminster Carpets’ commitment to being a leading British brand, designs in the Royal Borough Wilton collection are named after well-known areas of London, including Kensington and Chelsea. Cubic, trellis and more bold geometric patterns add definition and contemporary style to a room. From the intricate trellis designs of Covent Garden, to high impact geometrics in Kingston, each carpet is designed to create a contemporary style. Carpets such as Windsor use undyed yarns in their pattern to create an understated yet uniquely beautiful style. Director of Design at Axminster Carpets, Gary Bridge said: “We’re immensely proud to launch the Royal Borough Wilton collection and showcase Axminster Carpets innovative use of yarn. Like all Axminster Carpets products, Royal Borough Wilton is made to the highest possible standards, with the best quality materials possible. Whether they’re being used in reception rooms, hallways, stairs or landings, Royal Borough Wilton carpets are created to last and withstand heavy foot traffic.” T 01297 32244

The catalogue includes the stunning Nain wool rug collection, which features a faithful reproduction of a traditional Persian and oriental designs in incredible detail thanks to a 1.2 million points construction. Lecterns lead the way

Crown Floors continue to recruit new retailers and the roll-out of new lecterns for three new launches and three of the brand’s existing ranges reinforces the proposition.

Appearing in retailers across the UK right now, these new lecterns are excellent for stores that are short on wall space, but that want to introduce Crown Floors into their product portfolio, capitalising on the strong brand presence and highly desirable carpet collections. With a compact footprint, the lecterns feature the striking royal blue synonymous with the marque, attractively topped with large feeler samples. Available for the new Parkland, Wilton House and Sheringham collections and existing Roseland, Penrose and Alderley Edge ranges, the displays provide a powerful yet flexible platform for retailers. “We introduced the lecterns to provide retailers with more scope in how they make the most of Crown Floors,” says James Caldwell, sales coordinator, Crown Floors. “The wall units are undoubtedly high impact and have been hugely successful for those retailers that have them, but they do require a large commitment. By using the lecterns, retailers can achieve much the same effect, but with a more flexible and less spacedemanding display solution.” With excellent service levels that have seen the brand become the go-to carpet supplier for many retailers and cut-lengths supplied directly from the UK, these new lecterns provide retailers with an excellent opportunity to become part of the growing Crown Floors network.. Harrogate: the big carpet brands are back!

Key carpet manufacturers who have been missing in recent years will be back at Harrogate in September. Adam Carpets, Axminster Carpets, Brintons, Brockway, Bronte and Ulster Carpets will all be making a return to the exhibition in September.

Together with established leading carpet exhibitors such as Abingdon, Cavalier, Cormar, Crown, Furlong, Kingsmead, Lano, Mr Tomkinson and Manx, the announcement answers concerns last year that not enough manufacturers were making the trip to Yorkshire for the National Flooring Show. The latest carpet manufacturers to sign will be part of an extensive British Wool Pavilion, in Hall C, which will be a highlight of the show with a themed room set designed by the style team from Homes and Gardens magazine. “The growth of the event continues to be impressive,” says organiser Paul Stott, “More than 130 exhibitors are now expected to attend, making this the largest Harrogate show for several years.” Visitor registrations to attend are also up on this time last year. The encouraging news follows concerted efforts by organisers to re-build the show into a ‘must not miss’ event in the floorcovering calendar. In addition to growing the exhibitor list, there is an impressive seminar programme in the ‘Business Enrichment Theatre’ covering important topics such as: collaboration between manufacturers and the high street; key interior and residential design trends; taking your retail business online; and making the best use of social media as a marketing tool. One of the keynote speakers is Carl Hopkins - of Channel 4 'Secret Millionaire' fame - who will be giving his top 10 PR tips. The event runs from September 21-23 and admission (and parking!) is free. Discounted hotel rooms are now available via the event website. T 01423 779967 www.theflooringshow.com

Titanium XT is designed to provide the ultimate in performance and is suitable for general commercial use, making it ideal for retailers involved in soft contract specifications. Walter Osborne Wilson of Ulster Carpets

It is with great sadness that Ulster Carpets announces the passing of Walter Osborne Wilson, the son of George Walter Wilson, who founded the company in 1938 Over the years, Walter’s immense engineering talent was put to good use within the family business, playing a key role in the progression of the company from a tiny minnow, to the world leading axminster manufacturer it is today. Happily, Walter was able to celebrate Ulster Carpet’s 75th Anniversary earlier this year by cutting the cake at a Gala Dinner. In May, the board unanimously elected Walter Wilson as Honorary President in recognition of his many years of dedicated service and contribution to the company’s success. Walter is survived by his brother Edward, sister Mary, four daughters Mary, Caroline, Wendy and Jill and his twelve grandchildren - all of whom were able to attend the funeral service in Tullylish Parish Church. Despite his failing health, Walter was a regular visitor to the offices at Portadown right up until the last few weeks of his life. He will be greatly missed by all at Ulster Carpets.

Safe and smart

Vinyl flooring specialist Polyflor has announced that Expona Control, its groundbreaking slip resistant Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) brand, has recently been installed across four assisted living housing sites, each managed by social housing provider, B3Living.

Developed for use in areas which receive high footfall, Expona Control is the first flooring product of its type, combining the design benefits of an LVT with the sustainable slip resistance of an HSE compliant safety floor. Over 900m2 of Expona Control’s Classic Oak was installed by Cheshunt Flooring of Hertfordshire throughout the communal living areas within four of their assisted living schemes. Ideal for environments such as assisted living, Expona Control is fully HSE compliant, offering the same slip resistance specification as Polyflor’s marketleading Polysafe ranges. The slip resistance is sustainable for the guaranteed life of the product due to its achievement of 36+ in the pendulum wet test and 20 microns of surface roughness. A clean floor is a safer floor, and Polyflor’s PUR technology provides an easier regime for maintenance staff and a reduced need for energy, power, water and chemical consumption. Developed for use in residential and commercial areas which receive a high level of traffic, the range boasts 14 designs combining neutral stones and popular woodgrains; suitable for any purpose or design-led installation where underfoot safety is paramount. Contrary to traditional safety flooring, Expona Control is complemented with a range of inlay strips which allows for countless design possibilities. Tiles and planks from the wood and stone collections can also be installed side-by-side to delineate rooms and create zonal areas. All Polyflor vinyl flooring is 100% recyclable via the Recofloor recycling scheme and contains recycled content. T 0161 767 1111

The British Wool column “Wool is one of the most resilient, ecological and sustainable natural fibres in the world. It is also one of the safest because it is so fireproof”

HRH hosts wool fire education event In its fifth year, the Campaign for Wool has achieved many things but it was a significant personal ambition of HRH The Prince of Wales to highlight the fire retardant credentials of the fibre that captivated guests invited from across the world in June.

The Prince held the event within Clarence House gardens and the original aim was that he, himself would lead the ignition of wool garments, carpets, beds and bedding to show how wool reacted to flame in comparison to its manmade alternative. A strike announced on the day by the London Fire Brigade put paid to that idea so the experiment was swiftly pre-filmed and this was shown instead. As the manmade carpet and other items sizzled and eventually flamed, the wool ones took time to light, the burn was slow and then largely self extinguished. Wool with its high water and nitrogen content does not easily ignite and flame spread is very low and of course wool does not melt, drip or release noxious fumes. Carpet is the largest covered expanse in the home and wool must surely represent a safer choice for our families. It was the bedding which showed how safe wool is - while the Staircases show fire retardent wool carpet synthetic bedding charred and melted swiftly, the wool bedding did not and a copy of a newspaper placed underneath it remained completely undamaged. The Prince had wanted to explain how incredibly smart a fibre wool is. He wanted to bring wool and flame together to show the way wool acts in a fire situation, he commented: “Not only is wool one of the most beautiful and ecological and sustainable natural fibres in the world, but it is also one of the safest.” Well, the spectacle of a live fire demo may have been dashed by an untimely strike but the guests that saw the film, left with a serious, strong and compelling message for the public - for safe homes choose wool. 46 July 2014

Voice of the trade Les Tose – retiring sales representative, Cavalier Carpets How has the retailers’ attitude to reps changed over the years? I think that retailers are frustrated that there is a lack of knowledge of how products are made and that many representatives spend more time updating their iPad rather than talking directly to the retailer.

If you had to single out one thing, what do retailers need to do better? Accept that the internet is here to stay. Be prepared to match the internet prices, BUT offer the same basics that the internet offer, i.e. Measure it yourself, arrange a fitter yourself etc. If the consumer wants the service they will have to pay for it! What do manufacturers need to do better generally? Be aware of the need of the end user, and look after the retailers. After all they are our life line.

What’s been the biggest change you have seen over your career? The change in the type of products being sold, first it was axminsters that were gradually replaced by wool twists, now the change has been to man made products which account for 70% of the market. Will more things change in the next 10 years than have changed in the last 10? I believe we are now coming in to a more settled period allowing retailers and manufacturers to take stock of the trade and accept that we are now more diversified than we have ever been in adjusting to the consumer demands.

Are the best days of the carpet business behind us? Never, regardless of what the pessimists may say there will always be a need for carpet.

What advice would you give to a young person thinking of a career in flooring? Go ahead and do it, and look after your customers, get to know the boss in the store and don't ignore the people on the shop floor!

How long is ‘too long’ to work in the flooring industry? Many people in this business are in it for life so its never "too long".

Has the flooring business made you a better person!? It's made me more tolerant, and I've realised that things don't always happen immediately, be patient and never assume anything!

How far do you reckoned you have travelled for the flooring industry – or how many appointments/calls? An impossible one to answer, after forty five years in the trade you stop counting (or do you forget)?! What’s the best thing about the carpet trade? It's like working for one big family. Everyone gets on with each other, and people are only too happy to help if you ask for it.

What’s the worst thing about the carpet trade? It's far too easy to open a carpet shop, suppliers are only too willing to give plenty of free sampling. As my old boss used to say "samples are not valued by the retailer if they don't have to pay for them"

What was the most fun you’ve had in your career? Posing for a Y.F.T.A.(Yorkshire Floorcovering Trades Association) calendar trying to copy "The Calendar Girls". We had great fun and even a guest sheep was brought in by one of the committee.

What will you miss most about the flooring trade in retirement? The friends I've made over the many years, and putting the world and the industry to rights with some of them.

What are you most looking forward to doing in the future? Spending more time with the grandchildren, and my wife (she told me to say the last part). What are you most looking forward to NOT doing in the future? The early morning starts and sitting in motorway traffic jams which are becoming an everyday occurrence these days. If you hadn’t ended up in this industry, what might you have done? Become a millionaire!

“Be aware of the need of the end user, and look after the retailers. After all they are our life line.” 54 July 2014

Inspiration and innovation Solihull sets the standard Solihull is the scene-setter for the sales season later this year and the 60+ suppliers and manufacturers that present at the event are keen to compete for the growth that is just beginning to trickle through in consumer demand for flooring. The tight economic conditions mean that manufacturers have had less money to spend on product launches and the merchandising costs that go with it - a new range can cost anything from £150,000 to maybe half a million to roll out across the UK in stock, sampling and POS support as well as the production costs.

and focussed - with attention on accurately targetting consumer needs to ensure retailers have ranges they can really sell. In part two of our review from the Buying Groups National Flooring Show we focus on more highlights of inspiration and innovation that will set the sales agenda for the rest of the year.

As a result, product development is tending to be more thoughtful

Asiatic new directions In a market with many me-too suppliers, Asiatic aims to keep its rug range fresh and interesting. “We like to go in our own direction,” says Steve Crooks (pictured near right). “We really understand the market and are uncompromising about what we want and the quality. We make sure we offer what retailers can sell.” Traditional designs are becoming increasingly popular again amongst consumers and Asiatic’s new Windsor range of heatset polypropylene rugs in seven designs presents a sophisticated set of options. Shaggies are still strong and Asiatic’s heavyweight Plush is among the star performers in the sector but their Cascade range is the real eye-catcher – an affordable deep shaggy in 16 colours with shiny polyester yarn threaded throughout the pile. Ball &Young celebrating with champagne Ball & Young are raising a glass to celebrate the success of Champagne and Cavier – the least humble underlay on the market which has had such a strong response from the trade since the first sample was seen at Domotex in January with it’s distinctive white backing with gold lettering. “This is the best product we have ever made,” says Ann Shaw. “It is the underlay designed for those people who say to the retailer that they just want the best underlay available. Once they have been shown this product, they don’t want to compromise and settle for anything less.” And to cheer up those who can’t afford such indulgence, the best-selling Cloud 9 Cirrus underlay is now being delivered in a summer-themed red, white and blue bag – the third in a series of packaging designs for the product. “We’re aware these bags turn up in people’s homes so it’s good to be able to give them some graphics that are bright and cheerful,” says Ann. SHOWTIME IN SOLIHULL Cavalier Carpets losing its head Cavalier is losing its head. The swashbuckling face that has adorned the company logo since 1969 is being phased out in favour of a sharp, modern new look that can be seen on the company’s new website which was re-designed earlier this year with a lot of new features online. Across the product range, Cavalier is playing to its strengths with an intelligent re-colouring of its best-sellers. “We are trying to keep colour to the fore,” says Hans Lowe. The popular Country Collection, an 80/20 berber twist, has added four colours to the current 10 while Criterion Twist has replaced four in its range of 24 options to add new strong colours as well as the on-trend greys. In Cartouche, a luxury velvet, Cavalier has found the nearly white colourway has been selling strongly so they have gone the whole way and added a stunning white carpet to the collection. Carpet Recycling UK take it back A rise in the number of carpet take-back schemes is increasing local capacity for recycling and offering wider opportunities for retailers seeking sustainable disposal routes for off-cuts, according to Carpet Recycling UK. Commenting after the 2014 Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show, CRUK Director Laurance Bird welcomed the expansion of clean installation waste takeback schemes across the country, which offers many advantages for retailers. CRUK members Abingdon Flooring, Designer Contracts and Oxbridge Flooring are among the latest schemes helping to capture more carpet off-cuts that are reprocessed into new underlay products. “Participants who actively demonstrate their green approach in helping to divert carpet and underlay off-cut waste from landfill can benefit from enhanced customer perceptions, as well as reduced waste collections and lower disposal costs,” says Laurance. “This also helps them to differentiate their business from competitors.” T 0161 440 8325 56 July 2014

Seven of the newcomers are wool and a highlight is the addition of nine new plains to coordinate with the beautiful stripes of Crucial’s Biscayne range. The quality is, of course, exceptional with the uncompromising pedigree of Laneve New Zealnd Wool which give a great base for the bold, on-trend colours. Interfloor launching laminate Interfloor expertise in underlay and accessories is established but they arrived in Solihull with a whole new story to tell – the launch of their first range of laminates. The company has teamed up with Meister of Germany who were looking for a top distributor to expand their activity in the UK market. After a highly successful launch in John Lewis three months ago, Interfloor are confident they have the right product range. “It is an exciting opportunity for us and our customers,” says Paul Marsh of Interfloor. “This is a really smart, quality product with the right range of options for the UK.” With 42 choices across the range, the Meister products are covering a lot of bases including a good variety of larger plank sizes which are increasingly popular and a click-fit option which has a technology that looks easier to lay than many on the market. The specialist Nadura range of stone, textile-effect and wood laminates uses an impregnation technology to achieve the design effect in depth, giving a very hard wearing finish. Adam Carpets intelligent design Adam Carpets is steadily reinforcing its reputation for manufacturing exceptional carpets with creative design and uncompromising quality and sales director Eamonn Prescott is taking a strong lead from developments in fashionable fabrics to ensure his brand is at the leading edge of interior trends. “We have taken a ‘fabric to floor’ approach with recent introductions,” says Eamonn. “We’re closely monitoring interior design trends and then applying our own style to do something different. Technically we have the right, flexible machinery to make things happen – and happen pretty quickly,” he says. “We are building the brand and getting a great reaction from the market.” Increasingly active in John Lewis, Adam’s design-led approach is getting recognition from interior designers and magazines. Sophisticated mood boards showing the context for the latest patterns and a link up with the fashionable purveyor of paint, Farrow & Ball, has strengthened the proposition. Two fine examples of the style were on show in Solihull and will be launched this year. Close Companions is an 80/20 2-ply in two designs – herringbone and houndstooth – and each has 14 colour options with soft beautifully chosen shades.

“We’re closely monitoring interior design trends and then applying our own style to do something different.”

Pure Brit! is a 40oz 80/20 twist that lives up to its name – 100% British wool – in fact 100% British everything including its manufacture and its backing. And ‘Pure’ because this is undyed wool and yet Adam manages to present 10 colours including those all important greys. Also on show was the recently launched Revelation 80/20 range which offers seven coordinating plains with a stripe and a tonal option. Retailer response has been very positive since it first rolled out in March. T 01562 829966 www.adamcarpets.co.uk.

Now there is a colour-coordinated twist range to go with it – made from the same yarn with its distinctive earth tones. “The colours have been very popular and we know retailers have been trying to match to them,” says Graham Harris of Manx. “Now we have a twist in the collection, the range can go anywhere in the house and retailers have a stronger range to offer to their customers.” The twist will sit side-by-side with Natural Shades loop in a new lectern being launched in July. Vorwerk interior inspirations Vorwerk Carpet highlighted its stunning range of residential carpet to retailers with new point of sale displays for Ameo, Amiru, Viola, Nimo and its Frame rugs, as well as showcasing the outstanding Re/Cover Green Parts elastic flooring collection. Carpet styles designed to be a central feature of an interior’s design, rather than a mere aside, set the tone for the Vorwerk Carpet stand, demonstrating to retailers that its wall-towall carpet is among the most design conscious available today. The Re/Cover Green Parts collection, a unique elastic floor completely free of PVC, also made its presence felt at the show. Including a variety of wood and mineral effects, Re/Cover Green Parts brings a distinct aesthetic to homes. The collection interprets materials form nature and the environment in different degrees of abstraction for a floor that is distinctly Vorwerk. “Vorwerk is famous for taking a different approach, creating fresh and interesting flooring that inspires and offers the homeowner something very different,” says UK residential sales manager, Howard Lindsay. Louis De Poortere making a strong case Alongside its new and highly impressive suitcase that catalogues a striking range of carpet, Louis de Poortere brought its rug collection to the show. This on-trend gathering of vintage, worn-look and patchwork designs have been making a mark right across the country, becoming a star attraction for retailers. Encompassing The Fading World, Cameo and New Vintage collections, the rugs proved a real hit at the show. “Our rugs have certainly captured the consciousness of the UK consumer and it seemed that they also sparked new interest in our marque from visiting buying group retailers,” comments Alan Russell, sales manager, Louis de Poortere. “We were also delighted to show retailers our new suitcase that captures a simply stunning array of carpet styles.” Ideal for retailers short-on-space but looking to make the most from the prestige of the Louis de Poortere brand, the suitcase includes fabulously-named and no-less attractive carpets such as Superbirds, EcoDream, Richelieu Velours and Hermes. Alongside, an incredible array of stripe styles for use as stair carpet, hall runners and even wall-to-wall carpet for the adventurous in ranges such as Color.ne, Color Full and Color Loop, underline that Louis de Poortere is a force to be reckoned with in carpet with a sense of style. “The show proved a huge success. I believe our collections have to be seen first-hand to get a true idea of the quality, style and diversity that they hold and the show provided us with just such an opportunity. It looks like an exciting time ahead for the brand,” concludes Alan Russell. T 01505 615663 www.louisdepoortere.com 60 July 2014

SHOWTIME IN SOLIHULL Wools of New Zealand impeccable credentials Wools of New Zealand have impeccable environmental credentials with a sustainability story that is second to none through the Laneve brand that has gained recognition around the world. “We have a great story to tell and total integrity in the transparency and sustainability of our wool,” says Steven Parsons of WNZ. “It doesn’t cost any more money to make wool sustainable but it does carry a premium in the marketplace.” Increasingly, New Zealand Wool is being custom grown to order for specific manufacturing requirements and contract projects. A designated grower will ensure the exact type and length of fibre is produced, saving processing costs as well as providing the ultimate traceability of the wool. Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

Keeping in trim for summer Suppliers of trims, profiles, plates, stair fittings and other accessories have been actively adding new products and upgrading their ranges in recent months. The NE6 stickdown profile range from Morleys (2013) is amongst the recent introductions in this area. It is a 61mm wide cover and the company states that all stickdowns are available anodised in silver or gold. The business reformed at the end of last year after Morleys Ltd went into liquidation, deciding to focus on stairnosings, stickdowns and flooring adhesives and continuing to manufacture all product in the UK. It was pleased to find its SN, HN and DDA stairnosings have remained popular, encouraging the company to reintroduce its Peel & Stick system for the range, designed to simplify and speed up fitting times for end users.

The range is comprised of four versatile profile designs, Single Edge, Dual Edge, Z Edge and Cover Strip, to work with a wide variety of floorcoverings. Dickinson Moore has launched a range of eight different door bars to complement its best-selling gripper Floorwise Reflections presenter ranges of Gold and Silver in Wood, Dual Purpose, Concrete and Stick Down. The company has concentrated its efforts on its four most popular naploks: Single, Double, Cover and Z Bars in aluminium and synbrass and states it has been “overwhelmed with the response so far”.

“The range gives retailers a great sell-up opportunity against standard profiles, and it also remains cost-effective and great value” Morleys’ stairnosing magazine

Floorwise states that its Max Reflections profile range was inspired by the popularity of contemporary metallic finishes, consisting of chrome, brass, black nickel and brushed steel effects. “The Max Reflections range is modern, sophisticated and ontrend, and it will allow retailers to tap into the rising popularity of metal interior fixtures and fittings,” says Richard Bailey, managing director, Floorwise. “Homeowners are stepping away from the usual white plastic finishes and embracing a more refined look, and Max Reflections will allow retailers to offer profiles that coordinate with a whole host of interior schemes. “The range gives retailers a great sell-up opportunity against standard profiles, and it also remains a cost-effective and great value alternative to other mirror-finish profiles currently available.”

from The Stocklists

Lee Parker, managing director, Dickinson Moore, says: “We were asked by several wholesalers if we could find a product in metals that was on par with our gripper, which is a consistent product that offers value for money. Now, after extensive research, we are pleased to announce we have. “We were also told that it would be helpful if the tubes were colour coded to ease storage and selection purposes and obviously we have obliged.” QA Flooring has also introduced new product, extending its Carpet Gripper offering to include the Premium design. It has been designed for heavier, top quality carpet and is 28mm wide to provide greater strength and stability, with 20 per cent more nails and pins than its standard offering to withstand heavy foot traffic. The Premium Gripper is available in wood and concrete nail options, 5ft lengths and 400ft per box. It is available in the new white, black and yellow colour scheme, soon to be included on all QA accessories. For more information: Floorwise T 01509 673974 Morleys Ltd T 01772 626700

After the flood

F. Ball and Co. Ltd have created a durable and attractive 440m2 floor finish at The Hop Farm Family Park, Kent after flooding in December 2013. The existing flooring at The Hop Farm needed to be refurbished after being subjected. Tests revealed that significant levels of moisture were still present within the subfloor, necessitating the use of Stopgap F77. A solvent-free, two-part epoxy resin system, F77 offers unrivalled protection and performance for installations where a waterproof surface membrane is required, and creates a barrier against moisture in a one-coat application. Pigmented metallic black to aid coverage uniformity, the new epoxy resin product has a working time of 30 minutes and cures in approximately three hours, which was especially important at The Hop Farm, where contractors needed to bring the function suite back into use as quickly as possible. After installing the waterproof surface membrane, contractors applied a 3mm coat of Stopgap 1200 Pro, the minimum preparation, maximum performance smoothing underlayment which has a working time of 20 minutes, a walk-on time of 60 minutes, and was ready to receive new floorcoverings at The Hop Farm after just four hours. Styccobond F46, a pressure sensitive adhesive with excellent tack and high bond strength, was then used to adhere the new floorcovering in the function suite. A solvent free acrylic polymer emulsion adhesive, F46 dries to a permanent tacky film and is used to reduce the incidence of trowel serrations showing through thin vinyl flooring, making it ideal for design floorcoverings. 01538 361 633

Feature: Campaign for Wool

Setting the wool campaign alight The safety demonstration at Clarence House featured a stairs installation (far left) together with a burned out duvet and a demonstration of the different performance of a synthetic jacket (below right) and one made with wool (centre), when set alight.

Wool campaigners have fired up a new debate in the competition between natural and synthetic fibres with a dramatic demonstration of wool’s superior flame resistance.

Staged at Clarence House, the London home of Prince Charles, wool and polypropylene carpets were set alight along with suit jackets and duvet covers.

The tests, supervised by the London Fire Brigade, demonstrated what Prince Charles called the “genius of nature”. Addressing an audience of invited press and industry leaders from the floorcovering and fashion industries, he said: “Many people have forgotten, or perhaps have never known, that Not only is wool one of the most beautiful and ecological and sustainable natural fibres in the world, but it is also one of the safest.” In the demonstration, a small source of fire was placed on an installation of stairs carpet, a suit jacket and a duvet. In each case, the wool sample self-extinguished but all of the synthetic fabrics had to be extinguished by the fire brigade but not before the a blazing arm had dramtically fallen from the jacket and the duvet had burned through to the bed. Standing next to the charred remains, Campaign for Wool chairman Nicholas Coleridge, said: “Wool is safer and we forget this at our mortal peril.” Due to its naturally high nitrogen and water content, wool requires higher levels of oxygen in the surrounding environment in order to burn. In addition, wool’s highly cross-linked cell membrane structure will swell when heated to the point of combustion, forming an insulating layer that prevents the spread of flame. This mechanism also means that wool produces less smoke and toxic gas than synthetic fibres and it does not melt or stick and is self-extinguishing.

Flammability has, to forgive the pun, been on the back burner of wool campaigning in favour of its appearance, resilience and ecological attributes. But wool promoters are increasingly conscious that the safety issue is a more tangible benefit that consumers can quickly understand. The Prince, who is patron of the Campaign, is passionate about promoting wool following the slide in wool prices that left many growers paying more to have sheep sheared than their fleece was worth - potentially changing the face of rural landscape as the economics overwhelmed marginal farms. The Clarence House presentation marked the fifth anniversary of the Campaign’s launch and it’s fiftieth event. Leading figures from Axminster Carpets, Brintons, Brockway, the Headlam Group and Ulster Carpets were included in the guest list along with national press and, of course, The Stocklists magazine. The Prince also buried a synthetic and a wool jumper in the garden of his home which will be exhumed during Wool Week in October when it is expected that the biodegradeable natural garment will be mainly decomposed while the synthetic garment should still be ready to wear once the soil is brushed off! www.campaignforwool.org The jumpers buried at the Royal residence will be dug up in October to demonstrate the biodegrability of wool.

The latest wool fashions were also on show in the gardens of Clarence House
