CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
OUR SALES TEAM
“As part of our quality policy, we continue to strive for consistently high customer satisfaction. That is why we undertook a customer satisfaction survey, earlier this year, and we are proud to be able to report that we received very positive feedback from our customers,” says Phil Hartley, MD Edel Telenzo. “With an average satisfaction of 8.3, our customers have awarded us for years of hard work, dedication and our strong focus on quality of service.” This is a very good score, but Edel Telenzo will not be sitting on their laurels: “Our customers have also expressed their opinion on what they find important and where we can still improve. We are taking those remarks on board and will put focus on those issues the coming period,” says Hartley. Edel Telenzo would like to thank all retailers that participated in the survey.

Carpet&FlooringReview Authentic appeal
Polyflor has launched the Designatex collection of textile backed luxury sheet vinyl home flooring. The stylish yet practical range includes 12 wood effect and 6 stone effect designs.
To complement both traditional and modern interiors, the wood collection features a variety of wood species and layouts including three classic parquet designs. These wood designs accurately replicate the warmth, grain detail and natural textures of real wood planks for an authentic finish. Recreating the tones, textures and natural rock formations of real stone tiles, the Designatex stone collection includes limestone, slate and paving effect designs in three layouts: slim tiles, random tile placement and varied tile widths. Each design has been developed to create an eye-catching abstract effect which would be costly to replicate using stone tiles. Available in 2, 3 and 4 metre widths to accommodate larger living spaces, UK manufactured Designatex has a 3.0mm gauge and 0.3mm wear layer with SureTread R10 slip resistance to help prevent slips in the home. The UltraComfort soft textile layer on the underside of Designatex provides warmth and comfort underfoot, whilst aiding in reducing noise transfer between rooms with a 17dB impact sound reduction. The innovative textile backing helps to mask any minor subfloor unevenness or surface texture whilst being lightweight and easy to handle. Designatex flooring can also be loose laid in most homes, eliminating the need for adhesive and allowing for quicker installations. Its textile backing allows it to be laid over damp subfloors where a Relative Humidity (Rh) of 90% is not exceeded. With a 15 year domestic guarantee, Designatex features Polyflor’s renowned CleanShield PUR polyurethane reinforcement which helps prevent stains and scuff marks allows for a simple polish-free cleaning regime. Designatex is 100% recyclable and also achieves Indoor Air Comfort Gold certification for low VOC emissions. T 0161 767 1111

Style conscious Crown
With six new introductions, Crown Floors has given its 13-strong range a major overhaul for 2015, keeping the brand at the forefront of super stylish carpet for the home. One highlight of this new line-up comes in Lauderdale & Stripes, a unique take on coordinated stripe collections thanks to its wool yarn. Made from 100% Pure British Wool, the loop pile Lauderdale & Stripes raises the bar for these styles that are more commonly associated with cut pile polypropylene ranges, setting a sophisticated tonal stripe with matching Berber plains for a coordinated look that upholds the appeal of natural looking wool carpet.
Crown’s James Caldwell, said: “In a loop pile construction that gives the range a very on-trend feel, Lauderdale & Stripes really helps to put wool carpet firmly on the radar of the style conscious homeowner, proving it is not just a fibre for a more mature audience, but something that can appeal to buyers of all ages. With Lauderdale the appeal of wool is very much alive.” Six tonal stripes are paired to eight Berber plains in evocative natural hues. The end result is a beautiful organic rendition of one of the biggest trends in modern carpet. Berber plains are available in four and five-metre widths, while stripes are available in four-metre wide only. T 0800 0773301

NEWS Carpet’s new generation
In a sophisticated neutral palette that reflects the strong trend for grey with eight different hues, Tynedale Twist is the latest StainSafe carpet from Balta Broadloom.
Perfect for retailers looking for carpet that captures the latest in interior style, Tynedale Twist’s tenth gauge cutpile makes a thoroughly modern and elegant statement that will appeal to the new generation of carpet buyers that are now hunting for carpets that look luxurious rather than trying to copy a natural aesthetic. Thanks to StainSafe yarn, this hot new range also dials into the demand for carpet that is easy to look after, another big attraction for younger buyers. “There is certainly great demand for grey right now, but we are also starting to see a shift in buying attitudes towards carpet too, particularly as a new generation of carpet buyers less loyal to wool enter the scene,” comments Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Broadloom. “This new buyer is more focused on how easy spills will clean up and has an appreciation for a more luxurious manmade aesthetic, yet also want value, making Tynedale Twist an ideal carpet.” A two-ply yarn emphasises the modern essence of Tyendale while also helping the carpet to better recovery and longevity, a fact mirrored in the 10year wear and 15year stain warranties. Combined with a total of 12 colours and four and fivemetre width options, this bleach cleanable introduction from Balta Broadloom is well positioned to establish itself as a popular range for retailers right across the UK. Indulgence is bliss
With sumptuous softness that demands to be touched, Gentle Bliss is the latest introduction from Lano Carpets using their luxurious SmartStrand Silk fibre.
The new range brings a sense of blissful indulgence thanks to the lavish 11.5mm pile height of this 1/10th gauge Saxony carpet, and exclusive textile backing used enhanced underfoot comfort. Available in 16 colours including contemporary bolds such as purple and granite, as well as natural tones including camel, almond and ivory, Gentle Bliss is a carpet perfect for today’s modern home. “We’ve certainly seen a move towards carpet that offers a luxurious finish from an audience less committed to wool and Gentle Bliss is our answer to this,” comments Birger Karlsson, Sales Director UK & Ireland for the Belgian manufacturer. “Younger buyers are certainly more open to alternative fibres and are hunting for silk-like qualities that give an opulent look, yet they also want carpets that are easier to look after and again thanks to SmartStrand Silk, Gentle Bliss delivers.” This new Lano introduction bears all the low maintenance qualities that have made SmartStrand popular, offering outstanding stain protection and cleanability, with stains removed quickly and effectively with a diluted beach solution. True low maintenance carpet for the home, Gentle Bliss also offers exceptional durability, providing long-term appearance retention and recovery far more than more traditional stain resistant fibres can offer. Of course, SmartStrand Silk still uses bio-based content derived from corn found in the original SmartStrand fibre, for lower environmental impact, a story that also holds kudos for buyers: Available in four and five-metre widths, Gentle Bliss comes with a Heavy Domestic rating. NEWS Marble marvel
Seen in everything from luxury hotels to ‘affordable’ everyday luxury objects such as spice grinders from Tom Dixon, Martini glasses from Lee Broom and even mimicked in the fine bone china Carrara tableware from Dibbern, there is no doubt that marble is one of the hottest interior looks of the moment.
As always, Avenue is right on cue with the brand new Rapallo Marble cushion flooring from its Ultimate Elements collection, capturing the elegance and refinement of this luxurious finish. With the trend identified by Avenue’s on-the-pulse design team, the brand has developed three key looks on the marble theme, encompassing light, neutral and dramatic. A perfect replication of the unique patina of this treasured surface, Rapallo Marble is destined for great things:
Grey goes global
The rise of grey is well documented in carpet, but the trend has been strengthening in wood and tile floor finishes too. Grey woods and stones have been big news in mainland Europe for a while now and Leoline is finally seeing growing demand for the look in the UK too.
Shaking off its cold and austere reputation for something far more soothing and welcoming, grey has turned from ‘small risk’ into ‘best seller’. Showing in new and existing designs in the Tile Styles collection as well as woods such as Woodmark’s San Remo and Luxury Woods’ Camargue, grey is very much in the limelight in Leoline’s 2015 line-up.
“Marble is everywhere at the moment and so it was a must for us to bring it into the Avenue portfolio,” comments Victoria Hemelaer, product manager, Avenue. “We’ve taken a close look at the detail, noting an almost vein-like quality interrupting shifting tone on tone, bringing it to life in three hues that pay careful attention to the natural colour and variation in marble. A truer replication in flooring will be harder to find and we are really excited about the power of this design.” As part of the Ultimate Element collection, Rapallo Marble features Superguard for added scuff protection and easier maintenance, as well as Avenue’s Natural Look & Feel technology for a more realistic look without compromising underfoot comfort and warmth. In two, three and four-metre widths, Rapallo Marble can bring uninterrupted stunning looks to halls, kitchens and living spaces, a 15-year wear warranty testament to its quality. T 0800 032 3970
www.avenuefloors.co.uk
“As a European-wide brand we’ve seen grey rise to prominence in mainland Europe and now the UK is catching up,” says Victoria Hemelaer, product manager, Leoline. “Whether it is on the back of the colour’s growth in carpet, or indicative of a broader trend, there is no doubt that grey is beginning to replace typical ‘honey’ oak or yellow limestone tones for a more sophisticated look that is equally as warm and no less inviting.” Thanks to the design flexibility of cushion flooring, Leoline is able to respond faster to the latest interior styles, making it a great brand for retailers wanting flooring for fashion savvy homeowners, a generation in-tune with the practical advantages of cushion flooring too. Quiet, comfortable and easy to look after, cushion flooring from Leoline performs impeccably, no matter what the shade of grey. T 0800 032 3970

F. Ball and Co. Ltd.'s low emission flooring adhesive, Styccobond F3 LE, along with high performance Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayment and Stopgap 400 Repair compound, has been used to install new floorcoverings at the flagship 'Hawkshead' Family Outdoor Outfitters store while allowing the store to remain open for trade. Flooring contractors from St Ann's Warehouse, in Stoke on Trent, were contracted to refurbish the 480m2 floor at the shop in Hawkshead, Cumbria, by B3 Shopfitting. Mark Chapman, Managing Director at St Ann's Warehouse, said: "We were under pressure to complete the floor refurbishment with as little impact on business in the store as possible, which is why we went straight for F. Ball products. Contractors first removed existing carpets and checked that the concrete subfloor was sufficiently dry for work to go ahead. Minor cracks and pockmarks within the concrete were patch repaired using Stopgap 400 Repair, a fast setting, rapid drying compound designed for repairing internal floors. Once the patch repairs had dried, 3mm of minimum preparation, maximum performance smoothing underlayment, Stopgap 1200 Pro, was used to smooth the subfloor. Voted Product of the Year by flooring contractors and industry professionals in the prestigious 2014 CFA/CFJ Flooring Industry Awards, Stopgap 1200 Pro is designed for use directly over old adhesive residues, including bitumen and carpet tile tackifiers, without the need for a primer. With a working time of 20 minutes and a walk-on time of just 60 minutes, Stopgap 1200 Pro was ready to receive new floorcoverings in the store after only four hours. Contractors were required to close off and refurbish individual areas of the busy outdoor activities store separately, while the store was open to the public. In order to create the minimum possible impact on shoppers in Hawkshead, F. Ball's Styccobond F3 LE low emission flooring adhesive, which is ideal for use in the most sensitive environments, was used to adhere new carpets to the subfloor. T 01538 361 633

Master refreshers
The first qualified Quick-Step Master Installers are now heading back to the Academy to take part in the Master Installer Refresher Course and keep hold of their much-coveted badge.
Roll out the buckets
F. Ball has introduced new, 15-litre rectangular buckets for its Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier, designed to allow contractors to apply the adhesive using a roller dipped directly into the bucket, offering greater convenience, time savings and less waste.
Styccobond F41 is a solvent free acrylic polymer emulsion adhesive that contains a rust inhibitor. It is designed to provide a permanently tacky film, which prevents 'loose-lay' carpet tiles from moving under normal traffic, but enables them to be lifted and replaced easily when required. This allows individual, damaged or worn tiles to be quickly removed and replaced. In addition to the new 15-litre bucket, Styccobond F41 is also available in 25-litre and 5-litre bottles. Styccobond F41 can be used for securing a wide range of carpet tiles backed with bitumen/felt, non-woven fabric, PVC and other polymer backings. The adhesive has a drying time of approximately 30 minutes on absorbent bases, allowing for a quick installation. F. Ball recommends that contractors should always consult an up-to-date Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG) before selecting an adhesive. Richard Harris, Marketing Manager at F. Ball and Co. Ltd., said: “F. Ball listens carefully to feedback from the marketplace about ways to offer greater convenience to flooring contractors. Styccobond paint rollers fit comfortably into the new rectangular buckets, which makes the adhesive easier for contractors to apply quickly and efficiently, resulting in less wastage and faster application times.” T 01538 361 633
Providing Master Installers with a chance to brush up on their product knowledge, practice skills and the chance to try out the newest ideas in installation under the expert and friendly guidance of the Academy’s trainers, the Refresher Course is a requisite to maintain Master Installer accreditation: “The course was an excellent opportunity to learn new innovations and brush up on my installation skills and I’m pleased that the quality of the Master Installer badge is maintained through this course,” said course attendee John Simms, Flooring Man. The Master Installer badge not only certifies quality of work, but brings with it a range of benefits that give holders a competitive advantage, including being listed on the Quick-Step website and gaining valuable extra work through this. “Master Installers report an uptake in work since qualifying for the badge yet it is crucial to the success of the programme that the high standards it sets out are maintained. The refresher course gives our Master Installers the opportunity to try out ideas and learn about new developments, while also letting us ensure that their work still meets the standards that keeps Master Installers as the most skilled in the industry,” comments Lee Thompson, technical and procurement manager, Academy for Excellence in Flooring. “I think the course is a great way for us to demonstrate to our customers that we are professionals committed in providing them with a high quality installation. The Master Installer badge gives them peace of mind that we are not just ‘any old cowboy’ coming into their home,” commented Ian Hadfield, Select Flooring & Blinds. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Skilling up for quality
Leading carpet manufacturer Cormar Carpets held its seventh annual Flooring Guild training course to provide those starting out in carpet retailing with a valuable insight into the industry. Twenty two carpet retailers attended the three-day ‘Selling Quality Carpets’ event at Cormar’s Brookhouse Mill, run by independent industry expert and course tutor Ray Morgan from the Flooring Guild. The course gives independent carpet retailers a chance to enhance their sales skills and provides basic product knowledge about carpets and how to effectively plan and estimate. David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets said: “Having run this course for a number of years now, it’s great to know that it is still in demand, and that the positive feedback we receive, reinforces the fact that it really does make a difference to those retailers that attend.” The Flooring Guild is a ‘not for profit’ organisation, which was founded in 1999 to raise standards in the flooring industry through training and educational programmes. The organisation aims to provide a formal induction programme to assist people coming into the industry and a skills development programme, to motivate current employees. www.cormarcarpets.co.uk 26 July 2015

NEWS Bright and best
A combination of Polyflor’s high design luxury vinyl tiles and high performance safety flooring were used to help create a bright and welcoming atmosphere throughout Anya Court care home in Rugby, Warwickshire recently.
Fired up for flooring
A wide range of Altro flooring and wall cladding has been used in the newly re-constructed Malvern Fire Station, helping to create a facility that can withstand the demands of modern fire-fighting, and an aesthetically-pleasing working environment.
The fire station needed to be upgraded on all counts, as Alan Jones, Capital Projects Manager at Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, explained. “The building failed to meet operational needs, necessitating redesign and investment. It had also reached the end of its economic life with many failing elements; these included wall and floor finishes throughout. “We had no hesitation in selecting Altro for the flooring and walling for the project. I have specified Altro before on a number of similar construction projects and they have proven ideal in terms of quality, service and product appearance,”said Alan.
Part of the Hallmark Care Homes Group, Anya Court was opened at the end of 2014 and provides nursing, residential and dementia care for up to 70 residents at their state of the art facilities. The interior design of the home is focused around encouraging active and independent living that creates a specialist dementia community where residents will feel at ease in their own surroundings. 1300m2 of Polyflor flooring was installed by Galaxy Flooring to provide homely, stimulating and safe environments including a number of cafés, relaxing therapy rooms, hair salons and a cinema room. The uplifting environment ensured that the impressive Anya Court facility took home the prize for Best New Care Home at the 2015 Pinders Healthcare Design Awards. Hardwearing wood and stone effect luxury vinyl tiles from the Expona Commercial PUR range were fitted in many communal areas. Polyflor’s safety flooring was installed in bathroom en-suites and toilets used by residents, guests and staff to provide sustainable wet slip resistance in these areas. T 0161 767 1111

“We chose AltroCrete PU Fast-TrackTM resin flooring. The appliance bay is a busy testing area that gets a great deal of wear and tear, so the floor needed to be tough, safe underfoot in both wet and dry conditions and very durable. We have used AltroCrete PU before in other fire stations and it has proven very successful for this environment. It has the added benefit of providing a floor which is aesthetically pleasing.” AltroCrete PU Fast-Track is a 5-9mm textured floor made for heavy duty areas of potential spillage and increased temperature range. It has excellent resistance to impact and abrasion and to a wide range of chemicals. With a high level of slip resistance, it is ideal for food and drink production areas and heavy industrial applications. The ‘Fast Track’ option has the added benefit of a rapid overnight cure. Balta buy-out will boost growth
Lone Star Funds, a global private equity firm, have signed a definitive agreement to acquire Balta Group, the leading European carpets and rugs manufacturer, from Doughty Hanson, a European private equity firm, Filip Balcaen and Management for an undisclosed sum. Wool bounces back!
New campaign group commits to boost wool carpet business “Bouncebackability”could be the buzz word for a fightback by natural fibre launched as a major trade initiative by the wool carpet industry. A strong sense that synthetics have secured more of the limelight, especially on cleanability, has prompted leading wool carpet manufacturers and organisations to come together in a head-on campaign to sell wool benefits through retailers to consumers. “We are not here to knock the competition,” says Martin Curtis of the Curtis Direct wool group. “We want our fair share of the market and our aim is to ensure that the public gets the message that wool is the best fibre for carpets.”
“More and more people in the industry have wanted to join in with this exercise since word got around about what we are trying to do for wool.” Martin Curtis, Chairman WCFG
Three of the WCFG founders (l to r): Martin West, Steve Byrne and Martin Curtis at the Bradford meeting
Martin is one of the founder members of the new Wool Carpet Focus Group along with key figures from the manufacturing sector. A packed meeting in Bradford last month attracted several of the top carpet firms, the major retail buying groups and representatives of British Wool and Wools of New Zealand. Another founding member, Martin West of Kingsmead Carpets, told the meeting: “We’re conscious that wool has been overtaken in the market and our messages have been drowned out by the ‘bleach’ word. Wool carpet has been pushed backwards in the retail thought process. And we want to bring it back to the fore.” The Wool Carpet Focus Group (WCFG) aims to campaign on simple, loud and clear messages – primarily the “Bouncebackability” theme of long term appearance and texture retention for wool and also overcome the sense that wool cannot compete with synthetics on cleanability. “Wool has an amazing story and above all it does clean fantastically well but we’ve lost that argument in recent times,” said Steve Byrne of Whitestone Weavers who is also part of the core group. “If we can get the messaging right for this, I am sure retailers will want to buy into the concept and get into valuable conversations with consumers.” British Wool’s Bridgette Kelly told the meeting: “We have to plug the gap between the trade and the consumer and make wool more modern to bring it into the 21st century with a thud!” Other wool benefits such as flame retardancy and its environmental credentials are also in the mix for promotion and the WCFG are asking the industry to vote on its favourites – see panel.
Competing for attention
The next steps for the WCFG will involve designing a campaign for maximum impact across the industry and this is likely to include a focus on point-of-sale messaging, consumer literature, trade press advertising, web and social media promotion under the hash tag #naturally , and a major presentation at the Flooring Show in Harrogate. The POS issue and product labeling was seen as an essential ingredient of the campaign by the various heads of retail buying groups who spoke at the meeting. Warranties and cleanability claims have become a distinctive feature of synthetic carpets on display in stores but wool has not explained itself as well to consumers. “In some sense I think wool has seen itself a bit above the cut and thrust of noisy consumer promotion but it’s not,” says Martin West of Kingsmead. “It has to compete hard for attention to sell its benefits and secure its market share.” There are several interesting ideas planned for Harrogate but a key focus is to carpet the entrances to the halls with a light wool carpet and demonstrate how well the fibre cleans up afterwards, creating a short video of the experiment for social media promotion. The footfall over three days of Harrogate has been estimated to be at least equivalent to a full year of family life in a busy home. More details will be announced in the coming weeks, says the group. T 07788 916606

What do you love about wool?
The Wool Carpet Focus Group faces a real dilemma in trying to choose what to concentrate their marketing efforts on in the carpet showrooms. To this end, they have launched a competition open to everyone to identify the most popular and interesting factors that make wool carpets and rugs the best choice. You may just love the “bouncebackability” or natural cleanability and a vote for them - or you may have another in mind?
All entries should be sent for the attention of Dr Mike Madden by post to ENco Global Testing Services, Haworth Scouring Company, Cashmere Works, Birksland Street, Bradford BD3 9SX or email mike@encoglobal.com All entries will become the property of the Wool Carpet Focus Group Ltd and may be used in future marketing efforts. The prize is a specially embroidered Real Shetland wool throw which will feature the winning Unique Selling Point for choosing a wool carpet or rug.

Polyflor’s green achievement
Vinyl flooring manufacturer Polyflor was recognised for its green credentials when it received the prize for Green/ Sustainable Manufacturer of the Year at Insider’s Made in the North West awards.
Founded by leading flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro to divert waste material from landfill, the UK’s national awardwinning vinyl flooring recycling scheme has 650plus collectors and 63 drop-off sites throughout the UK and Ireland.
Manchester based Polyflor was selected by the team of judges from the manufacturing sector to receive this year’s Green/ Sustainable Manufacturer award which was sponsored by The Manufacturing Institute. Polyflor was chosen because of the company’s long term commitment to sustainability and responsible sourcing of materials.
Material can be collected from live projects, including schools and other educational establishments where Recofloor scores top marks with contractors completing new flooring projects during the long summer break when the buildings are empty.
Polyflor’s Manufacturing Director Steve Mulholland was presented with the award by Chris Maguire, the editor of North West Business Insider magazine. Steve commented, “The Polyflor team is delighted to have won this award, especially as it was our first time at the event and we were representing the flooring industry. To be recognised as one of the North West region’s top manufacturers and a company that prioritises environmental issues is a fantastic achievement for us. Our sustainability strategy is to minimise the environmental impact of our products and operations where we set ambitious objectives for ourselves.”
Since 2009, more than 2,300 tonnes of installation off-cuts and waste uplifted vinyl flooring have been recycled back into new flooring.
ISO 9001 and 14001 certificated Polyflor has successfully reduced its carbon footprint through plant operations and logistics, as well as collecting rain water on site so that 96% of the water used in their vinyl manufacturing processes is recycled. Polyflor is also the only flooring manufacturer to achieve BES 6001 certification for responsible sourcing, gaining a Very Good rating,
Around 20,000 square metres of Polyflor and Altro vinyl flooring were installed at the hospital, from where Polyflor collected Recofloor wheeled bins containing sheet vinyl off-cuts – a total of 40 bins over eight months.

Hamish MacGregor, Managing Director of Hamilton-based MacGregor Flooring Company Ltd, believes recycling ‘is the way forward on all contracts’ as it eliminates the need for landfill and associated high disposal costs. His company won the Construction Project of the Year Award at the 2015 Recofloor Awards for collecting more than 14 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring off-cuts from the new £90 million West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven built by Laing O’Rourke.

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!
Quality crafted goods that bring longevity are back and importantly it is the strains of a big mortgage that has made consumers think about ‘buying better and buying to last’.
Listen to Your Parents Choose Wool and Save Money! The rather alarming report by Times Money that the average age of the first time homebuyer is now 31 years while banking giant Santander reports that first time borrowers typically put down a deposit of £53,000 makes uncomfortable reading. This creates a frightening change of landscape for all involved in the business of provision of goods for the home. The Bank of Mum and Dad - once a loose joke about having to put your hand in your packet occasionally to support the kids - is now becoming a rigid requirement of the property market and banks are shaping joint mortgage products that will mean parents (and grandparents) are officially recognised co-funders but not co-owners. For clarity that means helping to pay the monthly mortgage.
Beautiful British Wool Carpet of the Month
The new ‘Hugo and Ella’ Collection by Adam Carpets is part of their longstanding Fine Worcester Twist range. Made with the very best British Wool, this range has reached the impressive age of twenty four years! The reason being that it has gained a reputation for quality, style and colour - it is available in 4 and 5 metre widths and there are 65 colours in total! Adam Carpets make it in Kidderminster on a twin needle bar, which gives it a ‘billiard table finish’, constructed from 2-ply yarn on 1/10th gauge, it is a seriously good wool twist carpet. ‘Hugo and Ella’ sit within this and offer ten new shades - which is what this attractively named introduction is all about. Described as ‘Cool and Urban and ‘Warm and Chic’ to reflect new market trends - Adam have put together a moodboard that reflects this modern and creative approach to Fine Worcester Twist.
Is this morally right? Not really but house prices are set to rise by up to 25% in the wake of market confidence following the election results and each increase puts the next generation in rented property for longer, possibly forever. Is this a financial column? Of course not - this is a wool column but where does wool carpet lie in this economical shifting sand? It used to be the step-up product for the family home - once you’d leapfrogged your way from starter home to the ‘home of your dreams’. But is the home of your dreams now the only one you buy or even rent?
Only time will tell - how all this affects upward mobility but research shows that purchases for home decoration are increasingly become more carefully selected. Quality crafted goods that bring longevity are back and importantly it is the strains of a big mortgage that has made consumers think about ‘buying better and buying to last’.
The wool rug and carpet is the most resilient of any on the market. The natural bounce and appearance retention of real wool, is why it can provide a perfectly good floor covering for many years. The need for comfort and style and performance is why we choose the best sofa we can afford, the best oven, the best bed for the best sleep and of course, it is the same reason why we should choose the best wool carpet - after all who wants or can afford to replace these major home purchases every few years?
Parent power is very important - it sets a generation on its way. So while helping to pay university fees and now potentially mortgages too, maybe we should be telling them - ‘buy the best quality wool carpets and rugs - because they are a wise investment and it will save us ‘both’ money in the not too distant future

and why we like it...
There is something very clever about calling a carpet collection after two people - ‘Hugo and Ella’ are modern and attractive - by virtue of their names, they have already stepped off the page and are two characters that the consumer can identify with. We have seen the pictures of them and we like them! Adam has developed a neat new shade introduction with a strong lifestyle story. We think that is a very clever marketing approach. And moodboards - of course we love those too - how better to build understanding of why carpets and colour make a difference to the home. Well done Adam Carpets! This is very impressive indeed! Marketing insights The art of staying one step ahead Fashions come and go but our desire to create an ideal living space is a constant, making home interiors one of the largest retail sectors in the UK. With more people ‘loving’ rather than ‘listing’ their properties, manufacturers need to stay one step ahead as consumer confidence grows in creating the perfect look and feel for their home. wallpaper and gives instant character to a space. Geometric, floral, tribal and dots are not just hip but make every room in the house look happy.
Alternative Flooring – Margo Selby QuirkyB Wool, Shuttle Silas
Alternative Flooring’s pioneering spirit has made wall-to-wall patterned carpet cool again. Retailers have embraced this move to pattern driven by consumers who have chosen bolder patterns in the home. People are happier with pattern and colour and will use it as an accent or feature it as a hero piece.
Carpet is also a great insulator and as our lives become busier we all need the power of quiet. Practically speaking pattern doesn’t show those spots and spill. It wears well and is just nicer to walk on. Patterned carpet has never looked and felt so good.’
Flooring trends are driven by more than just great design, Axminster Carpets are seeing consumers turning full circle and falling back in love with wool and natural products as they increasingly scrutinise the environmental credentials and performance of their flooring. High-profile initiatives such as the Campaign for Wool, figure headed by HRH The Prince of Wales, has been instrumental in educating consumers about the versatility of wool. Gary Bridge, Design Director looks at the marriage between design and material, ‘there is an emerging trend of applying rich designs to interiors that appeals to more than just the visual senses – we believe nothing is better than sinking your toes into a luxurious and plush wool carpet’. Scott Cochrane, Retail Sales Director discusses how Karndean has also predicted the trend towards the desire for natural materials, ‘we are predicting the trend for modern rustic and reclaimed industrial looks

Designers are moving towards a twist on the traditional by using reclaimed materials alongside modern and industrial pieces to create a striking contrast within the space’. Jacaranda report that their extensive range of hand woven wool carpets continue to be all time favourites with key looks including chunky textured boucles and bold stripes which offer more visual impact. Also on trend are shiny silky carpets made either from TENCEL® or Viscose, which look and feel like silk. They are immensely soft under foot and add a lustrous glossy look to interiors, traditional or contemporary. These new qualities from Jacaranda are helping to change the public perception of carpet as only a background to showcase other furnishings, to the possibility that the carpet itself is the design focus.
Adam Carpets are supporting their retail customers with an industry first, a series of four trend boards in a unique point of sale display. Each board recognises the need to build a scheme using a combination of base and core colours, with the addition of accents to create a cohesive look.
Kelly Butler, Design Manager at Adam Carpets, explains the inspiration behind each board, “we based the boards on four on-trend interior design themes, ‘Rich & Sumptuous’, ‘Understated Elegance’, ‘Nordic’ and ‘Modern Classic’. By using the boards, we were able to be adventurous in our use of colours.
The highlights of the four boards is their diversity in colour, design and style: pewter greys married with rich berry tones to create a luxurious look; silver greys with warm neutrals offset the copper and burnt orange through clever layering of colour; natural stone is lifted with accents of vibrant teal and bolder acid yellows; deep inky hues combining a natural base and tropical blues". Whilst researching colour trends is important to Ryalux, they also get a unique insight into what colours their customers want through their bespoke colour matching service. Darren Longden, Commercial Director shares his thoughts, ‘colour is perhaps the most important part of what we do. What is clear is that colour is a very individual thing, and there are two clear types of current colours trends. Neutrals: from beige through to greige, neutral shades are, and we believe will remain for some time, the most popular colour choice. Despite these colours being widely available, we find customers still want a slight variation to get it just right for their interiors. Real Colour: despite having perhaps the most varied colour palette available, we never cease to be amazed at the colours our customers request. From yellows, through to pinks and purples, colour is very personal to our customers, and we are in a privileged position to be able to provide them with the exact colour that they want’.
Ryalux are currently developing a colour palette for a new range which will feature over 100 colours to reflect the trends they see in 2016/17. From colourful pastel shades of subtle yellows, delicate pinks and parfaits to slightly bolder, yet sophisticated colours such as aqua’s and paler Adam Carpets – Nordic, one of four mood boards blues.

NEWS Harrogate’s ahead for September
Strong exhibitor growth promises a bumper show in Harrogate - with just under 4 months still to run, The Flooring Show 2015 is powering ahead, with confirmed space sales already 5% up on 2014, and with many more exhibitor bookings in the pipeline.
As well as all the core industry bellwethers taking up prominent positions, there will be an expanded presence of British manufacturers showing on the Wool Trends Centre, which features Adams Carpets, Axminster, Brintons, Brockway, Bronte, Cavalier, Ulster and Westex in a smart pavilion promoted by the British Wool Marketing Board and Campaign for Wool. Many companies are exhibiting for the first time at Harrogate, which will also bring a new dimension to the show - these include Asiatic, Dry-Cell, Flooring Sales, Gemini Adhesive, Happich Acoustics, Hug Rug, Hugh MacKay, IVC, KDF, Magiglide, Malish, Radin Para Iranian, Steinel UK, Phoenox, Rug Guru, TCS, Uzin, V & M Rugs and Whitestone Weavers.
Houzz to speak at The Flooring Show Houzz is the world’s leading platform for home renovation and design – and they will be leading design seminars at this year's show. More than 25 million monthly unique users rely on Houzz to find design inspiration, get advice from the largest home community on the web, source products, research and hire home professionals, and manage home projects from start to finish.
The Trends Hub – the ‘Flooring Retail Outlet of Tomorrow’ Over the past two years the Trends Hub at The Flooring Show has become a highly popular part of the event. This year the theme will be highly relevant to flooring retailers and designers alike: it will be based on a ‘Flooring Retail Outlet of Tomorrow’, designed specifically to reflect the shopping experience desired by consumers when making decisions about their home and how they want it to look. The Scarlet Opus team – curators of the Flooring Show's Trends Hub for the 3rd consecutive year - will build a mock-up of a flooring shop designed by the consumer. It’s truly imaginative and perhaps, at odds with what we currently do in the industry – or maybe not?
Seminar programme announced The seminar programme taking place at The Business Enrichment Theatre has now been published online; as an important and much anticipated part of the show, the programme will contain content specially designed to be relevant to flooring retailers, contractors and designers alike.
Heritage to high-tech
Daughters and grand-daughters of the original founder of Brockway Carpets have made a nostalgic visit to the Kidderminster manufacturer.
It was a poignant day for Margaret Bailey, Rosemarie Moore, Lizzie Moore, Patricia Oakley, Roberta Birch and Veryl Waldron (pictured), whose father and grandfather George Brockway set up the former Axminster and Wilton carpet business back in the 1930s. AG Brockway, as it was known then, was taken over by Roy Annable and Skene Walley in 1964. Over fifty years on, Brockway employs 100 staff and remains a family run business with their sons Charles Annable as managing director and Nick Walley as production director. Today, Brockway is one of the UK’s premier manufacturers of high quality wool-rich carpets, which are sold thoughout the UK and overseas by major international retailers and independents. Charles Annable said: “It was fantastic to welcome the Brockway ladies on a tour of our factory. They really enjoyed seeing new production techniques and how Brockway has transformed from a traditional weaver to a state-of-the-art manufacturer of contemporary floor coverings.” T 01562 828200 www.brockway.co.uk

V4 Woodflooring and its sister company Concreate has invested more than £600,000 in a new distribution warehouse and trade facility in Castle Donington.
The investment, which has created four jobs in the area and has the potential to create more opportunities for the local community within a few months, will enable the company to better service its Midlands and North of England customers, particularly Birmingham and Manchester where it is hoped the next phase of expansion will take place with further regional hubs. Chris Vincent, (4th from right) Managing Director of v4 Woodflooring, was joined by many invited guests, which included Shaun Ambrose-Jones, Chairman of Castle Donington Parish Council, for the official launch of the site, which is located at Unit B3 at Langham Park. Founded in 2002, family run V4 Woodflooring is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of high quality and responsibly sourced hard wood flooring. V4 Woodflooring branched out to produce and distribute Concreate, the first flooring product of its kind to be brought to the market. Concreate is an innovative and luxury flooring product that was inspired by a material used to create much of the Olympic village in Beijing. The decorative engineered panel creates an environmentally-friendly, cost-effective and aesthetically pleasing alternative to a poured, polished concrete floor or wall panels. Chris Vincent, Managing Director of V4 Woodflooring, said: “The Castle Donington facility will enable the company to better serve our trade customers in the Midlands and the North. It is an ideal location, with great transport links, and will complement our base in the South. “The business is growing year on year and has ambitious plans for the future, and we hope that the Castle Donington site will grow as V4 and Concreate expand,” he says. Positively POS British Wool British Wool are building an innovative portfolio of point-of sale-products for retailers to capitalise on the strengthening demand for wool products on the High Street. “We’re giving the tools to the retailer to tell the story that consumers are enthusiastic to hear,” says Tim Booth of the British Wool Marketing Board. The Board has come up with some smart concepts such as promotional tags to clip to invoices which confirm wool benefits and give tips on carpet and cleaning. Then there’s the designery window ‘wordle’ decals (pictured here with BWMB’s Haildi Kranich-Wood) and the clever cubes that stack in-store to make a high level impact on ‘The Story of Wool.” Literature has also been re-vamped with a two-part set of booklets – the first is “Sheep to Store” and the second, “Store to Floor” covering the pedigree of wool, its unique benefits and its ease of care. Fingertip room planning Masterpiece Systems Masterpiece are adept at developing clever technology for the flooring industry but the company’s boss Charles Pearson gets it right when he says: “Our strength is that we are very well focused on how retailers really run their business – instead of just inventing functions they have to figure out for themselves.” This philosophy has earned Masterpiece a strong reputation in the market and they are seeing growing uptake of technology for measuring, estimating and business management. “We make life easier and retailers have reacted very positively to the latest features,” says Charles. MasterPiece has always been strong in taking the technology right into their customers’ homes, to put the measure straight onto the screen and get quick resolutions. Fingertip room plan drawing minimizes text entry and enables a fast and professional response. Current developments will widen the type of tablets supported to include iPads and Android. Pick your own Penthouse Carpets If you would really like to know what choices your customers want, don’t just listen to what they say, let them pick their own! The new sales and marketing director at Penthouse, Jon Gamble who joined from outside the industry last year, is open minded. “We have a great reputation as a strong, traditional supplier and I want to know what else we can do – and how we can do it better,” he says. “We’ll be focusing on colour so we’ve asked our retailers what works for them.” So at the Solihull show, Jon turned up with thirteen colour options and asked retailers to pick the eight shades they would like to see in their 80/20, signature collection, Pentwist. Launching in late summer, the revamped Pentwist range will offer the consumer an “on trend”, 2ply product that is great value. Similarly, Carlton Twist, a popular subtly -heathered twist will be re-coloured with four new shades later this summer. Penthouse is ‘employee owned’, a fact that is little known within the industry, and is promoting its status on merchandising, to reinforce the fact that it goes the extra mile for its customers, and listens to what they want! Top of the pile Cormar Cormar Carpets cements its place at the top of the pile as it celebrates two further industry accolades. Recognising the company’s high quality products, service and staff investment, Cormar has been named Flooring One and Metro Group’s Supplier of the Year, for the 11th and 16th consecutive year respectively. David Cormack, marketing director at Cormar Carpets (pictured left with Flooring One’s Glenn Harding: “It’s incredible to have won both awards so many times. The competition is strong but to continue to stay ahead of the game proves we are doing something right. In the last year we have grown our business with the Flooring One /AIS Buying Group members and the fact that the group has expanded its membership has undoubtedly helped the growth. Nevertheless the improvements they have seen from Cormar in service, product, technology and quality have all no doubt helped us win this award again.” Cormar continues to produce all its wool and polypropylene carpet ranges from its two production sites near Bury in Lancashire. It also has its own fleet of over 60 distribution vehicles to ensure a top class delivery service to customers, as well as its own team of 23 sales representatives throughout Britain and Ireland. Measuring up to the task RFMS Measure Mobile 3 is the new snappy app from RFMS, the largest flooring software company in the world, which puts the latest measuring and estimating technology onto the cloud and into the hands of salesman and estimators who can now work on mobile devices in the customers homes. You can even use a laser measure that bluetooths into your iPad to capture measurements remotely and then plan and estimate the installation while you are sat in the customers’ lounge. “You can give them hard numbers while you are there and explore the options in real time,” says RFMS director Dave Dumoulin. “We’ve found that using these systems makes the ratio of closing the sale go up by nearly 20% so you have much more chance to leave with an order,” he says. The app is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play and offers five plans free – and you can delete used plans to keep under that limit but RFMS reckon you’re going to like the system so much you’ll be happy to pay for the extras. Accelerating success Thomas Witter “We’re making sure that everyone’s having a fresh look at wool with affordability at the forefront of the proposition,” says Robbie Thomson at Thomas Witter. New capability at their North East mill means new opportunities for the business that is seeing strong interest in their latest products. “For years we’ve been asked for a 100% British wool loop pile that can sell for under £20 and we’ve always said no. Now we can. And it’s a super carpet,” says Robbie. The company was showing retailers the prototypes of the new ranges in the latest on-trend greys and silvers and the response was so positive that the company is accelerating their manufacturing plans. Also on show was the versatile new 80/20 called Luxury Twist – launched at the beginning of the year and again with affordability to the fore. Fashion statement Ulster Carpets The fashion statement that was Ulster’s unveiling of the trendy Boho collection last year has proven highly successful and the company are now carrying through some of those colour themes into their latest launches. An example is the new Hamilton range which is a modern plaid coordinating with Boho in five fashionable colours – and there are plans to extend this range further in the near future. Some of the existing popular ranges are also benefiting from the trend. Ulster’s premium twist Grange, a 10.5 row 80/20 wilton with a particularly fine finish has added six new colours to make a selection of 30 in total and York wilton has also added six, making 42 in total. Another debut for Ulster which was well received at Solihull was Braeburn, a classic rustic 80/20 plaid in five soft ‘celtic’ colours. T 028 3833 4433 www.ulstercarpets.com 44 July 2015

In the mood for imagination Adam Carpets Adam Carpets are undergoing an exciting evolution into one of the most fashionable brands in the business – and doing so with considerable character and flair. “Everyone knows we make good carpets,” says Adam’s Eamonn Prescott, “But we also want to be seen as a fashion led brand with an aspirational feel. We are trying to ensure that people engage with the brand that sets us apart.” And it’s working. Adam have already come up with two strong features this year that have made the trade sit up and take notice and, as importantly, which are attracting considerable consumer attention. First was the arrival of Ella and Hugo along with the new colours in the Fine Worcester Twist range. These two characters are being used very creatively to set the scene for the ‘male’ and ‘female’ colourbanks, building a lifestyle story around the colour sets to personalize the palette. “We’ve really enjoyed doing this,” says Eamonn. “It has become a talking point and captured people’s imagination and we have had a great reaction, including through social media.” The success of the concept suggests that Adam will be looking to extend the idea in future range launches. Linked in with this approach is the use of ‘mood boards’ – imaginative displays of interiors and fashion leads that show carpet in the context of everything else that’s trending in the consumer market. All 16 ranges are represented on mood boards which slot into a smart store display unit – a real focal point for the consumer and an imaginative way for retailers to engage their customers in a discussion about style and colour. T 01562 829966 www.adamcarpets.co.uk.
Adam have used mood boards to great effect in their exhibition displays for over a year now but such was the strength of response to the approach that the company has now launched a stunning mood board stand for retailers.

NEWS Zero heroes
At the recent Carpet Recycling UK annual conference held in Birmingham, the Macclesfield based Furniture and Flooring store Arighi Bianchi won the coveted award for “Recycling Champion 2015”.
This prestigious award is presented by CRUK in recognition of the ongoing commitment to recycle both new carpet off cuts as well as old post-consumer carpet as well. Laurance Bird from CRUK comments “this year in particular showed an increase in the number of flooring companies who are now benefiting both environmentally and financially by recycling their carpet waste and subsequently the number of companies wishing to be considered as the UK’s number one carpet recycler increased considerably compared to previous years”. “With the efforts and determination made by Arighi Bianchi to achieve a “zero waste to landfill” policy the decision for them to win the “Recycling Champion 2015” award was unanimous. Arighi Bianchi’s Neville Hinchliffe adds “we’re delighted to be recognised as the country’s leading carpet recycler and all our hard work and effort which went into achieving a “zero waste to landfill” policy has been extremely worthwhile”. “I’d also like to thank Kenburn for their help and advice in sourcing the “waste to energy” solution for our postconsumer carpet and underlay waste and by using a Kenburn “carpet crusher” these materials are now used as a fuel to power concrete kilns”. “In addition to achieving a “zero waste to landfill” policy we’ve also at the same time significantly reduced our ever increasing waste management costs, as recycling carpet waste actually costs less than sending it to landfill”. Carpet campaigns on air quality
The Carpet Foundation is considering going on the offensive about the inherent benefits of carpet to indoor air quality. Over a decade on from the Healthy Flooring Network and Pergo debacle, the Foundation believes that now the time is right to talk about the contribution carpet can make to indoor air quality. Earlier this year, the Daily Mail ran a piece entitled ‘Could the air in your home be killing you’? The text was factually accurate and drew attention to the potential effects on health from airborne toxic chemical pollutants that are not dispersed because of inadequate ventilation in UK homes - though the article did not specifically mention carpet. Increasingly, however, research is producing evidence that carpet, rather than being hazardous, has distinct health benefits. The three dimensional construction of a carpet is such that many airborne pollutants, which need to be breathed in to cause harm, become collected in the pile of a carpet, until removed by routine vacuum cleaning, so preventing their recirculation in indoor air.
“We have long been guarded and defensive about the health benefits of carpet. We believe the time is now right to trumpet this message.” As Andrew Stanbridge, Chief Executive of the Carpet Foundation said: “We as an organisation, and as an industry, have long been guarded and defensive about the health benefits of carpet. However, retailers are increasingly telling us that the concern over carpet for ‘asthma’ sufferers still bubbles away beneath the surface. And, what is more, it is an entrenched view and difficult to persuade consumers otherwise. We have written to Asthma UK and are keen to enter into dialogue with them as we believe the time is now right to trumpet this benefit and message.” T 01562 747 359 www.carpetfoundation.com 48 July 2015

The artificial grass market - a lawn unto itself! The range is suitable for terraces, gardens, events and even interiors, the company explains, and includes a range of 20 different qualities. It is available in different yarns, pile heights, densities and colours, providing scope to meet the clients needs and specification. With the ever increasing development of The Oryzon product, the company states that all suppliers and users can have confidence that The Oryzon Grass Collection will live up to its expectation. Urban 10 says artificial grass has been around for 50 years and is taking off in the UK in “a huge way”. Lano Landscaping come in a range of options
Perhaps one of the most surprising growth areas for the flooring sector has been that of artificial grass, which continues to prove increasingly popular around the UK. The affordability of good quality, realistic products has made artifical grass an increasingly desirable consumer purchase and therefore a potential new revenue stream for retailers. And the spring and summer seasonality of this “outdoor carpet” is a useful counterpoint to the Autumn selling season for conventional indoor flooring.
“Artificial Grass is a world apart from the greengrocer display grass that we are used to,” says national sales manager Andrew Ellison. “There are now so many products to choose from - thick, thin, brown thatch, completely green - which do you choose?” Urban 10 has seen increasing sales numbers over the last five years and states that it now has a range “that competes with any on the market". “Our best seller is Regency which is a 30mm height, lush pile and has that brown thatch for the realistic look,” Mr Ellison continues. “Artificial grass can be laid pretty much anywhere and over anything: concrete, tarmac, sand and decking. “In a nutshell the flooring industry has found a product that is basically carpet for the outside.”
Lano marketing manager Heidi Debakker says: “The rise in popularity of artificial grass has been dramatic to say the very least and more and more homes in the UK are seeing it as a serious alternative to grass lawns. “Much of this is due to the incredible realism of the latest generation in artificial landscaping grasses and their low maintenance nature, perfect for smaller gardens and outside living spaces," she continues. “Here at Lano we have been specialising in artificial grass for many years and our Sports division is at the forefront of synthetic pitches, developing high technology surfaces. This means our Lano Landscaping artificial grasses enjoy the trickle-down effect, benefiting from the latest developments to provide more realistic, durable and easy to look after grasses in a range of looks that bring depth and diversity enough for any home.” The Oryzon Grass Collection has also benefited from the number of artificial grass users increasing due to its affordability, combined with more realistic feel and appearance. Through a large number of wholesale partners in the UK, the collection is now at the disposal of any homeowner or contractor to make their space look green and relaxing for years to come.
Urban 10 has seen strong growth in its popular Regency
RunGrass reports the domestic artificial grass market is currently said to be growing at 30% year on year, with most people now knowing someone with an artificial lawn. The company now finds that the higher end products are the most popular in its product range. Merryfield makes cutting machines for the flooring industry and has responded to the increased interest in artificial grass after seeing established carpet stockists and fitters eagerly including this product sector into their standard flooring portfolio Artificial grass has different requirements for handling and rolling. Bulk grass rolls are usually coarser in manufacture to that of carpet and also larger and bulkier to enable larger areas to be covered outdoors, it explains. Development of machines to do the rolling and cutting of this product was a natural progression, says Merryfield, leading to the creation of its Eco-Cutzgrass range to measure, cut and roll this increasingly popular product.

BUSINESS NEWS
READERS’ SURVEY
Rejoice in the ‘carpet comeback’
The pull of wool
The UK carpet market is staging a remarkable comeback and “retailers should rejoice” according to business commentators.
“With apologies to Mark Twain, reports of the death of the UK carpet industry have been greatly exaggerated,” says business journalist John Ficenec writing in the Daily Telegraph. “The UK consumer is gaining in confidence and household incomes are now returning to pre-crisis levels. As housing transactions pick up and purse strings are loosened retailers should rejoice.” Andrew Hartley of specialist market research firm AMA adds: “It has been a very tough market but there is some light at the end of the tunnel, and the sector should enjoy a more robust period as overall demand for carpets is more established. People tend to write it off but unfairly so. On the back of general upturn in consumer confidence and spending and more buoyant housing market we feel reasonably confident carpet sales will grow.” Analysts accept that the flooring had a bad recession – carpet sales slumped from £1.2 billion in 2008 to £968 million by 2011 – and that it was one of the slower sectors to recover. “Britain’s love affair with carpet may have waned during the dark days, but it never disappeared completely,” says John Ficenec. “The demand for retro living styles and growing consumer confidence means the UK carpet sector is now enjoying something of a comeback.” Commentators also point to the success of the quoted companies in the sector as evidence of this revival with Carpetright reporting a “sustained recovery” with 10.5% sales growth in the last quarter; Victoria suggesting its year-end performance will be ahead of expectations; and profit rises at franchise specialist United Carpets. Carpet still accounts for 57% of all floorcovering sales and overall High Street furnishing has shown modest steady growth this year. Many manufacturers have seen a slowdown in May but the slow, cool start to the Summer holds hope that interior investment will benefit while garden spending remains on hold.
Bouncebackability? What’s best about wool? Wool promotion has been overtaken by the marketing savvy of the bleach cleanable brigade according to a new campaign group who aim to overturn the advantage (see page 30). “Wool has an amazing story and above all it does clean fantastically well but we’ve lost that argument in recent times.” says Steve Byrne of Whitestone Weavers and a founder member of the new Wool Carpet Focus Group.
Do you still love me?
Harris debuts with Tapi chain
Martin Harris, son of the Carpetright founder, has rolled out his first stores in what is planned to be a new force in retail flooring with a 200-strong national franchise under the brand name Tapi.
Following ambitious plans first announced in February, Mr Harris opened a 4,700 sq. ft. showcase store in Tooting, South London last month and another in Great Yarmouth. A shop in Ipswich is next. “Now is the perfect time to set up a big-ticket business’” he told Retail Week magazine. “The economy is starting to hot up, people are desperate to find homes and there’s not enough choice out there.” The Tapi model is innovative. The business will be employee-owned and be delivered in stylishly shopfitted premises which, unusually, will be spread across the high street and shopping centres as well as retail parks. “People love spending money on their homes, there are TV programmes about it, but I don’t think the flooring sector has embraced that, it’s been very stale for decades,” said Mr Harris. “Normal carpet shops are dusty, musty and price-focused. I think Tapi is very different. This is light, airy, inviting; it’s a pleasure to be in. We’ve raised the standards of retailing.” DFS founder Lord Kirkham has also emerged as a backer of the new chain.
Bouncebackability, cleanability, low flammability and environmental credibility are all in wool’s favour. We’d like you to take part in this month’s survey to tell us what do you think are the best selling points for wool. Are consumers less confident about wool than they were 10 years ago? Are you losing higher value sales because of it? What does the wool industry need to do to make a difference? Or is polypropylene just an easier sell? Inform the industry and let us know what you think….
The online survey takes less than four minutes. It’s anonymous and doesn’t need any form filling. Please help us inform the industry. Visit www.thestocklists.com and click on the survey banner to take part.

Flooring Factsheet Adhesives
Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
SAFE
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
DURABLE EASYCARE
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Comfort
COMFORT
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Safety
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.
100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 53

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
Associated Carpet Group www.smartercarpets.co.uk Contact: Richard Moore Tel: 01942 825520 rjmoore65@googlemail.com rmoore@smartercarpets.com
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 56
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents
• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.floorwise.co.uk
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!
Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 58
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
Flattening
Shedding
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading
Indentations
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE
Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.
