The champions of quality carpets
The expression on his face says it all. The determination to succeed. The single-minded desire to win. Thatʼs why Associated Weavers have adopted the Maori image to spearhead the unrivalled Invictus family of carpets. Drawing on the hero-appeal of mythological characters for inspiration, weʼve now added Hercules and Hyperion to the resounding success of the Invictus concept.
deepdown durability. Its performance is so invincible, weʼve given it a full 20-year stain and wear warranty. This is testament to the unique iVinci SDO StainAway construction that will repel almost anything thatʼs thrown at it. And if a stain is troublesome, the Invictus 100% bleach-cleanable polypropylene qualities will win the day.
Firmly implanted in the twenty-first century, Invictus is our all-conquering brand. Developed by our designers using the very latest yarn technology, itʼs the perfect combination of appealing bedroom-softness combined with
Invictus goes from strength to strength
Youʼve told us that the superb colours and outstanding stain resistance of Invictus have made it one of your best sellers. Thatʼs why weʼve extended the offering to become one of our most comprehensive ranges ever. Weʼve already created the boho heather shades of Perseus and Pegasus to the range. The subtle plains Orion and Sirius have added to the appeal. And at just 1190 grams, Scorpius has become the most competitively priced product in the Invictus range, with a choice of eleven beautifully fashionable colours. Now come Hyperion and Hercules. Hyperion is a luxurious super-soft 2380gm saxony. Hercules is a bi-colour version of the iVinci yarn that gives it a heather-like appearance, with a better-defined pattern. In line with many of our products, all Invictus carpets are multi width in 2m, 2.5m, 3m, 4m and 5m variants.
Join the Invictus carpet conquest
Become an Associated Weavers warrior and rout the competition this year. Weʼre the team you need for all the tactical support in your store. Distinctive merchandising and POS material, with new display units to show off Hercules and Hyperion at their best, all means that itʼll be well worth contacting your area manager now to place your order. May the best man win.

Carpet&FlooringReview Silky Heathers
With a bright new look, the Sensit collection from Balta Broadloom has been broadened with the introduction of Sensit Heathers, a delightful take on traditional heather styles that’s wonderfully soft. Thanks to the super fine filaments found in all Sensit carpets, Sensit Heathers reaches a new level of softness for polypropylene without sacrificing the StainSafe performance for which the fibre is renowned. With high translucency, these filaments are also responsible for a beautiful silken look that gives Sensit Heathers a modern feel. In 12 on-trend colours, the style is ready to take on homes wanting a carpet that’s soft to the touch and tough enough to withstand the onslaught of busy family life. “As part of the new look Sensit collection, Sensit Heathers enjoys great in-store support but it is the softness and beautiful silk-like effect that really make it stand out. Giving a fresh twist to the classic heather look, we’re excited about the potential of this introduction,” says Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Broadloom.” In four and five-metre widths and with a 2000g/m2 pile weight, Sensit Heathers delivers impressive resilience thanks to its bleach-cleanable two-ply yarn. Guaranteed to perform with 15-year wear and 20-year stain warranties, this carpet ticks all the boxes for great quality and extraordinary value. T +32 56 62 22 11 www.baltagroup.com
Service beyond style
Edel Telenzo is regarded as one of the finest exponents of beautifully crafted wool loop carpets but while on-trend styles catch the eye of homeowners the manufacturer’s are focusing attention on quality and service levels to help retailers maintain high customer satisfaction.
“Making sure our carpets are stylistically on-point is only half the battle,” comments Mark Rooney, national sales manager, Edel Telenzo. “Consumers are increasingly tuned-in to the quality of product and service of the retailer, so we work exceptionally hard to make sure we deliver these too. Our reputation for quality has been hard earned and it is not something we are willing to compromise.” When buying an Edel Telenzo carpet, homeowners are given extra stain-protection with Scotchgard alongside extensive warranties and guarantees, but also one of carpet’s most innovative domestic carpet backings. SBR-free, Ceneva releases no odours, has lower VOC emissions and reduced flammability – all in a backing with lower environmental impact and a more positive contribution to indoor air quality. “It is our goal that a carpet from Edel Telenzo is a true investment for homeowners, something that will last and bring years of use,” continues Mark. “Wool is a natural and renewable source with great properties so it is only right and proper that we enhance this wherever possible and bring our customers the highest quality we can.” Alongside this attention to product quality, Edel Telenzo holds 98% of all carpets in stock so that it can deliver to anywhere in the UK within just five days. Including Lano’s most exquisite 100% pure new wool qualities in Mayfair Velvet and Mayfair Velvet Supreme, Oasis and Mirage, Touch of Luxury proves that wool has a place alongside the current fashion for super-soft yarns and contemporary silk effects. “Wool is undoubtedly still the consumer’s favoured pick with industry campaigns refocusing the attention on this natural fibre,” comments Birger Karlsson, sales director UK, Lano. “That’s why it forms a mainstay in the Touch of Luxury collection, a desirable and sought after classic carpeting choice that endures through fads and fashion and always remains timelessly elegant.” The collection features a dense and luxurious velvet with Mayfair Velvet (1365g/m2) and Mayfair Velvet Supreme (1890g/m2) as well as two stylish loop piles in Oasis and Mirage. NEWS Displays with distinction
With lecterns, a wall unit and a waterfall tombola, there is no doubting that Crown Floors has a display option for any size or shape of store, bringing great value and the presence of one of the most distinct carpet brands available today.
For retailers with wall space to spare or just keen to make room for carpets in high demand, the Crown Wall Unit is an impressive addition that can feature up to eight Crown Floors ranges. Featuring key selling messages, the display creates a wall of colour and texture, as well as containing hang-style swatch books for all ranges. The Easy Clean Tombola is a great idea for retailers short on space, featuring 74 different stain-resistant options. The striking white finish breaks the mould compared to ‘blend in’ wood effects and promises ‘familyproof comfort’ from all styles featured. An ideal way to make the most of some of the brand’s most popular carpets, the Easy Clean Tombola holds 14x18” samples across all tastes and budgets. Finally come brand new Crown Waterfall Lecterns bringing maximum flexibility and adaptability in often changing store layouts. Available for some of the brand’s most recent collections including Langholm, Kent House, Chatsworth, Burlington, Roseland and Ascot, each lectern holds large 16x24” samples of best-selling colours, while a free-of-charge 9x18” sample book hangs on the reverse. “Our display options make it easy for retailers to really enjoy the fast-selling collections found within the Crown Floors stable,” comments James Caldwell, sales coordinator. “With something for every store and carpets that meet the needs of every home, being a Crown Floors retailer is a rewarding experience, particularly with our current M&S Voucher Promotion.” The M&S Voucher Promotion rewards each cut-length sale of more than 18m2 with a £10 voucher to spend online or in-store at one of the nation’s leading retailers. Jungle fever
Quick-Step continues its drive to produce products for the latest interior trends, expanding on last month’s ‘Memphis’ feature with a focus on all things jungle with botanical beauty holding sway as the great outdoors is welcomed into the home.
Green in its many varieties is the most logical colour to tie in with the jungle trend, but intense hues such as indigo blue and sunny yellow also have a link to Mother Nature. Alongside these, neutral tones and shades of white, beige and brown radiate purity, ensuring you fully play on the plant kingdom’s diverse palette. Like colour, prints are a consideration; busy tropicals or minimalistic abstract forests on furniture and accessories are entirely trend-proof. Even in-your-face, plant-patterned wallpaper is no longer seen as oldfashioned or kitsch; on the contrary, it has now become a popular part of the jungle trend. The jungle trend wouldn’t be complete without introducing a few real plants. These days, even the smallest florist stocks exotic varieties. Why not think big with a real palm tree or a giant, ivy-covered wall? Complement this with a natural-look floor to create a warm impression. A stone floor exudes a sense of rusticity and safety, and there’s nothing more authentic than the visible wood grain in a real wooden floor. But fortunately for those who find the maintenance of these natural floors off-putting, Quick-Step holds a wide range of clever imitations that effortlessly combine the traditional look and feel with user-friendliness. The best of both worlds, as trendy as can be. www.quick-step.co.uk

NEWS Pedalling performance
High design luxury vinyl tiles from Polyflor’s innovative 2mm gauge Affinity255 PUR collection were recently installed at Tredz cycle shop in Swansea to give a brand new look to their shop floor area.
Approximately 400m² of Affinity255 luxury vinyl tiles in Flamed Chestnut were installed by local flooring contractors Artisan Flooring in the specialist shop selling bikes, cycling equipment and accessories. The 16 authentically reproduced wood plank designs within the Affinity255 collection replicate the natural variations found in solid wood through the use of tonal hues and surface textures. The bold Flamed Chestnut design chosen for this Tredz store includes prominent knots and markings to give the effect of natural timber. Jamie Davies, South Wales Area Manager at Tredz commented, “We’re delighted with the finished look of the shop and have had plenty of positive comments from our customers. The natural wood effect really brings the great outdoors into our shop interior.” Able to withstand the demands of high traffic retail environments, the hardwearing Affinity255 range of heavy commercial luxury vinyl tiles features a cross linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement (PUR) which protects the floor and allows for a simple maintenance regime. This range has also been designed with a 2mm gauge which enables it to be easily installed alongside other 2mm sheet vinyl flooring products such as Polyflor’s homogeneous, heterogeneous and safety flooring ranges. Polyflor’s Affinity255 range has impressive environmental credentials, achieving a BRE A+ rating in major use areas and Indoor Air Comfort Gold, assuring that VOC emissions are below any globally determined levels. Affinity255 is also 100% recyclable via the Recofloor vinyl take back scheme and contains an average of 40% recycled content. T 0161 767 1111

NEWS Plugging the skills gap
As the lack of young professionals entering the industry remains an ongoing concern for many flooring companies, the Academy for Excellence in Flooring announces its 424th qualified Master Installer, Sam Willis, representing a new generation of installers plugging the skills gap.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Sam Willis, 29, has completed an intensive three-day pass or fail course, testing every aspect of his installation skills to ensure the quality of his work meets with the high standards set out by the Academy. “Like many I expect, I started off in the trade working with my father to earn money in the school holidays and discovered that I really enjoyed the work,” begins Sam. “As I entered the industry on a fulltime basis, I really wanted to learn more and to keep up to date with the latest techniques. “The course was brilliant, really informative yet at the same time relaxed and I learnt new techniques, important in my continued learning. It has also had a positive impact in obtaining work, something that’s important in building a career in the industry.” The Quick-Step Master Installer scheme is available as a combined wood and laminate course or for the brand’s luxury vinyl, LIVYN, and takes places at the Academy’s state-of-the-art facility in Manchester. Course details and costs are available from the Academy for Excellence in Flooring. T 0161 877 6955 www.quick-step-academy.co.uk
Bacon butty boost
Recofloor launched its 2016 series of ‘Bacon Butty’ events in May and June where flooring contractors and fitters found out more about the UK’s award-winning vinyl flooring recycling scheme.
Free goodies, including travel mugs and T-shirts, along with bacon or egg rolls were on offer at participating distributors’ premises across the UK at events hosted by new Recofloor team member Joe Gardner. This year’s bumper schedule featured in roadshows in Gateshead, Manchester, Cardiff, Carlisle, Taunton, Swansea and other venuews in England, Wales and Scotland. An event is also planned at 3D Flooring Supplies’ new Bristol branch opening soon.
Gripping stuff
Almost legendary in status, Diamond Gripper from floorwise delivers superior hold in residential and commercial locations thanks to its extra-width and increased number of zinc-coated rust-resistant pins.
Customers were invited to drop in, pick up their free butty and learn more about how Recofloor’s services can enhance their businesses. Benefits for Recofloor’s 700-strong nationwide membership include a sustainable option for end-of-life flooring, enhanced green credentials and up to 70% savings in disposal costs. Starter packs that include material specification, collection bags, a brochure and Certificate of Commitment were provided for those interested in signing up to the scheme. Bookings for this year’s Bacon Butty events attracted high levels of interest, according to Recofloor’s Project Officer Carla Eslava who said: “Replies came within hours of sending out invitations; we’ve had an enthusiastic response! Bookings for July are available too, so please get in touch if you would like to take part and create a bit of a buzz around your business.” T 0161 355 7618
www.recofloor.org
Available in pre-nailed options for concrete, wood and dual-purpose, Diamond Gripper is great at delivering stability in a wide range of conditions and is made to a far higher standard than many other grippers, a fact not to be overlooked: “The quality of accessories you choose can be the difference between a good or a great installation so we would always recommend Diamond Gripper for fitters wanting the very best end result,” says Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise. “Easier to work with, longer lasting and with a better hold, the superiority of Diamond Gripper is clear to see.” Wider than standard, Diamond Gripper also helps to reduce accidental damage to walls and skirtings when nailing to make for faster installation. This extra width is also great for five-metre wide and power stretching installations too, holding tight and fast thanks to the increased number of high quality pins. Diamond Gripper can be found at trade counters at floorwise distributors across the UK and Ireland, packaged to ensure each section arrives in perfect condition, ready to give a lasting hold in all carpet installations. NEWS ‘Impressive’ recycling award
Recofloor has been recognised for its extensive waste vinyl flooring recycling work with a prestigious award in the Letsrecycle.com Awards for Excellence in Recycling & Waste Management 2016. The unique Take Back and Recycling initiative, founded in 2009 by UK flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor, impressed the judges for tackling a difficult waste stream to win the Waste Management Initiative in the Commercial and Public Sector category. On behalf of the judging panel Letsrecycle.com Editor, Steve Eminton said: “The judges were impressed that two companies within the industry had worked together to develop a collection network using reverse logistics. We hope that the scheme will thrive in the future.” Recofloor engages with all levels of the flooring supply chain, offering cost-effective collections of uplifted vinyl flooring and installation off-cuts to contractors and fitters across the UK and Ireland with significant waste disposal cost savings. Waste vinyl is diverted from landfill and recycled back into new products, including flooring – around 2,900 tonnes to date. Project officer Carla Eslava (pictured second left) commented: “We are absolutely delighted to win this award, which recognises our tremendous achievements in diverting ever-increasing quantities of flooring waste from landfill and putting this material to good new uses. Recofloor’s success has been very much a team effort with support from Polyflor and Altro, and of course, involving the entire flooring sector supply chain.” T 0161 355 7618

Fitter finalists
The six finalists for the Carpet Fitter of the Year 2016 competition have been selected following very closely fought semi-finals. The judges have all stated that the standard of fitting by the semi-finalists was very high indeed and made the judging extremely challenging. After a fifteen year hiatus the grand final will take place at The Flooring Show. Speaking about the competition, NICF President Ian James said “I always said that if I were ever NICF President I would make it my mission to bring the competition back - after all, there isn't a fitter in the land that wouldn't want UK ‘Fitter of the Year’ on his van.” The successful fitters who have progressed to the finals taking place over 18 and 19 September in the Kings Suite at The Flooring Show are: Darren Ash - Alfrick, Worcestershire Michael Atkinson - Ulverston, Cumbria Paul Finch - Wantage, Oxfordshire Nick Hood - Birmingham, West Midlands Mark Smurthwaite - Whitehaven, Cumbria Byron Terrett - Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan Many congratulations to them all!

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!
The Premium Label Partnership is just taking the unique strengths of British Wool to a new level that puts the proud British Wool performance at the centre of the carpet story
New British Wool Labels Promote Unique British Strength
This month the British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB) will launch its British Wool Premium Label Partnership with manufacturers wanting to promote a higher content of British grown wool in their carpets, rugs and other products. This allows the manufacturer a chance to influence how much wool of genuine British origin is used in the blend of their ranges. This will see a new label – the Gold British Wool label and a pre-existing label - the Platinum label promoted as part of the new Premium Label Partnership.
British Wool Carpet of the Month
True Brit, the undyed range from Adam Carpets, provides contemporary style for the home with a bank of ten colours that are all natural and taken from the colours provided by nature itself on British sheep breeds on British farms. It is an 80/10/10 blend created as a yarn by British spinners and manufactured by the family owned British company – Adam Carpets in Kidderminster. Available in four and five metre widths, it is sold exclusively within the UK – achieving a low carbon footprint - it is a great solution for any area of the home with real eco advantages.
What does all this mean to the retail community? In marketing terms, it simply adds real confidence. How? Firstly it’s defining a high level of British Wool content that is guaranteed – 70% within the wool blend in the case of the Gold label and 100% in the case of Platinum.
The Premium Label Partnership is actually between the manufacturer of the product and their supply chain and this ensures that the manufacturer is responsible for ensuring the content is sourced and verified according to the criteria that is set-out by the BWMB. The BWMB audits the chain and the product is only awarded if the content meets the standards.
Making decisions on the type of wool within blends is actually a critical decision for spinners and manufacturers; it affects the design and texture of the carpet but critically, it affects the production cost. Perhaps most significantly though – it affects the product performance. So reducing quality wool within blends can reduce other aspects of the carpet in situ.
British Wool grown on breeds in the UK is regarded as the strongest carpet wool in the world. It is the main wool choice in contract and commercial ranges - such as those found in casinos and hotels. But just why is British Wool so strong? It has a bulky resistance to pressure that is difficult to repress – the benefit to the carpet industry is appearance retention and less tracking and flattening. This is inherent in the UK sheep breeds as it is a result of years of cross-breeding combined with our lovely British weather – which in its constant adversity, produces the growth of a strong fleece that will protect the sheep on the land. Nature working its miracles again!
The existing Shepherd’s Crook standard label requires a lower content of British Wool within the blend and still provides assurance to retailers and consumers but the Premium Label Partnership is just taking the unique strengths of British Wool to a new level and one that puts the proud British Wool performance at the centre of the carpet story - which is exactly where it should be.

and why we like it...
In the year that Her Majesty The Queen celebrates her 90th birthday, it seems only right to celebrate a True Brit in the carpet world! We feel that there is a lot that our Royal leader and this very British carpet range have in common. Dedication to the British flock being of primary importance! Of course whilst the Queen is dedicated to British people and this carpet to British sheep the message remains the same - Rule Britannia!! We love the red, white and blue here at British Wool - after all we are owned by 45,000 UK sheep farmers! True Brit is a natural winner and we think our remarkable Queen would wholeheartedly approve!

Buying Groups
National Flooring Show
SHOW REVIEW PART 2
Our second look at the launches, trends and innovations at the agenda-setting Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show in Solihull.
“This is the best opportunity of the year for retailers to see right across the industry in one go with everything that’s latest and greatest.”
The ideas factory Cavalier Carpets Cavalier Carpets enjoy experimenting and often use trade shows to prototype their latest ideas and gather reaction from retailers about what might make the best-sellers of the future – a good example is the innovation twist/velvet combination Gemini that got a rave reaction in Harrogate a couple of years ago and is now in full production. So in Solihull there were sneak previews of a few up and coming ideas with very different styles. “Silken” is a woven polyester carpet that seeks to live up to its name with a soft sheen that is designed to outperform polypropylene at a lower price point than nylon. Playing around with the subtle patterns that are so much in vogue now, Cavalier were also trialing Stria which uses a distinctive linear yarn effect to create an alternative to stripe – and the company was also seeking retailer reaction on a swatch of sophisticated small pattern designs. With the hint of a possible new loop to come and the promise of a major re-colouring across the ranges, we suspect Cavalier will have a lot to talk about at Harrogate! T 01254 268 000 www.cavaliercarpets.co.uk
Refreshing change Cormar Carpets Cormar has been concentrating on wool during the Spring. With a series of launches, including the multi-weight wool twist, Oaklands, and the updated two-fold loop pile Malabar, this culminated in the re-launch of the premium wool loop, Avebury at Solihull – a premium product in 3-ply, 100% New Zealand wool. Avebury has been in the market for several years but the re-launch adds four new colours and a whole new texture – a subtle ribbed design that coordinates with existing options in the range for plain and stripe. “This is something a little different and a refreshing change” says David Cormack of Cormar. “The market was all about statement stripes at one time but now the discerning customers are looking for something more subtle and easy to decorate with. Avebury plays to this trend by offering simple clear options adding a little texture alongside the other designs in the range.” Cormar is marking its 60th year of success in 2016 and added to the celebration with yet another Supplier of the Year Award from buying group Flooring One, pictured here being presented by the group’s Glenn Harding (right) to Chris Isaacs of Cormar. Mobile measures up Masterpiece Systems Masterpiece has completed a major step forward with their floor planning and estimating software with the launch of their cloud-based application. “This makes life so much easier,” says Bruce Sievewright, a professional estimator who has been working with the company on this project. “It makes for a quicker job, a better job, less errors and the opportunity to close the sale with a consumer right away at their home.” All this is possible because the system can work remotely on mobile devices – measuring, planning and estimating on site to collect all the information needed to progress the job to a defined inventory and cutting plan. The new approach has been in beta testing with 50 estimators since last November, processing up to 900 jobs per week, and the success of the trials has led to a confident launch of the new product to everyone with a standard price of just £29 per month. 50 more estimators are due to take up the system by the end of July Bruce Sievewright is pictured far right with Masterpiece’s Charles Pearson. Posh POS Crucial Trading The striking display of Crucial Trading’s stand in Solihull is all the more remarkable because it’s actually their POS system for selected retailers who want to create a studio environment for the high-end designer brand. The centerpiece is a large ‘consultation table’ embedded with a horizontal sample selection of mixed textures, styles and colours across Crucial’s distinctive range. The sales conversation takes place across the table and retailers can pull out additional samples from the drawers underneath. The striking mosaic design of the table can then be replicated in complementary wall displays. “This studio approach is inspirational and very engaging,” says Michael Turner of Crucial (pictured left). “And we can adapt and refresh the mix to meet the needs of each retailer and changing fashions. On the floor of their stand, Crucial were showing off Harmony, their biggest ever launch in sisal which rolls out in herringbone and plain designs and 16 colours. T 01562 743 747 www.crucial-trading.com
Affordable authenticity Thomas Witter Here’s a tartan that’s a turn-up for the pattern books! A smart, heavyweight plaid that retails for less than £20. Introducing the new Midas Tartan in polypropylene, Witter’s Robbie Thomson commented: “We have had a great reaction. There is such a demand for this style but with some wool products selling at £70 it can be unaffordable for some consumers. We have worked hard to achieve a really authentic look and we think this is a winner.” But Thomas Witter is not neglecting the price conscious consumer who does want wool. The other launch at the buying group show was Natural Habitat, a 100% British wool carpet in two designs – a weave and a rib – and five shades which hits the fashion for textured carpet head on at a retail price point that’s around the £20 mark. Adam Carpets
Colourful celebration Adam Carpets is having a colourful celebration of an important anniversary in the company’s history, 25 years since the launch of its flagship Fine Worcester Twist. The carpet is Adam’s best-seller with a track record of success that started in May 1991. The 2-ply 80/20 wool yarn with nylon is tufted on a tenth-gauge machine but its market leading quality is based on a manufacturing process using a twin needle bar for a finer finish and increased tuft density almost unique in the industry which the company describes as łbilliard table, smooth. “If what you are looking for is smart, specialist colours with uncompromising carpet quality, Fine Worcester Twist is the go-to range, says Eamonn Prescott of Adam (pictured right). “It is the one collection that has held its position throughout the ups and downs of the market.” The company conducted a retailer survey on Fine Worcester Twist to mark the anniversary. “We were delighted with the positive feedback on the range,” said Eamonn. One retailer commented: “Quality, colour and finish is perfect. Unable to fault the product.” In its 25-year history, the range has cycled through 126 colours of which 11 still hold their place from the very beginning and at the show Adam presented an interesting display of how those colours had changed over the years.
“If what you are looking for is smart, specialist colours with uncompromising carpet quality, Fine Worcester Twist is the go-to range”
Last year, Fine Worcester Twist was at the centre of Adam’s highly successful ’Hugo & Ella’ colour branding initiative which was acclaimed by trend experts for forecasting the popularity of pink and blues as the tones of choice for 2016. Adam tends to introduce a colour makeover every four years in this range and the company spent 18 months researching new colours for the anniversary ‘edition’ and new purples, taupes and silver greys are included in the new line-up of 65 colours and it may be a surprise to learn that blue is the second best-selling colour in this range from the new introductions. More choice, less hassle Whitestone Weavers The development of the Hassle Free range is the key focus for Whitestone Weavers with a collection that has caught the imagination of retailers as a smart, safe seller with lots of options. Hassle Free is hard wearing 2-ply polypropylene carpet made in the UK with a lifetime stain warranty and availability in wide colour choice and 4 and 5 metre widths. The latest launch announced at the buying group’s show was Inspiration, a modern 45oz saxony, which neatly fills a gap in the Hassle Free collection which now numbers eight ranges in total. “Retailers are really getting behind Hassle Free in a big way,” says Whitestone’s Vince Holden. “It’s the kind of carpet that everyone wants and the name says it all – no problem!” T 01429 892 555 www.whitestone.co.uk
Top twists and textures Hugh Mackay Hugh Mackay are riding high with their revitalized Durham Twist which enjoyed a phenomenal re-launch last year to sustain its flagship position in the twist market. But centre stage in Solihull were two new wool loop carpets that build on the company’s strong position in this increasingly popular sector. The two distinctive ranges are Dunelm, a smart square loop, and Elvet, the company’s first ‘bobble’ loop which responds to demand from retailers for this type of texture. Both are top quality 3-ply construction in 100% wool and come in a well-research portfolio of 14 modern colours. Both are available in 4 and 5 metres. T 01429 892525 www.hughmackay.co.uk
A new concept in custom Brintons The buzz at Brintons this season is the major launch of their QuickWeave program that puts the company at the centre of a new generation of custom carpet manufacturing using a clever pre-defined concept to keep the costs down while offering exceptional choice. Inception will be the first range of designs that will be available through QuickWeave, and it is a contemporary collection of over 60 patterns, available in five pre-set colour palettes. These woven axminsters are an 80/20 construction and are available in qualities from a 7-row weave to 11-row weave. The minimum order is 40m2 and the carpet will be ready within six weeks. “This is an exciting new option for soft contract installations offering a really fast turnaround time for a high quality custom feel carpet,” says Natalie Littlehales (pictured right of the group with Chloe Palmer and Martin Pow). Retailers can show customers a beautiful catalogue that reveals the full range of options and order samples to help them make their decision. T 0800 505055 www.brintons.net 50 July 2016

Fine finish is just the start Ulster Carpets Amongst the constant innovation that is a hallmark of Ulster Carpets, one of the market’s finest velvets is not forgotten! The flagship Ulster Velvet is a superb product with an exceptional finish that has been perfected in the 35 years that this range has been around. Now, five new colours have brought the palette up to date with an emphasis on soft taupes and greys to complete a set of 35 options. Ulster Velvet is an 80/20 with nylon and available in multi-widths from 1 to 5 metres. That innovation we mentioned might be one to watch in time for the Harrogate show in September when we are expecting more news from Ulster about a rug program to be launched across their axminster ranges. Rugs, read all about it! Asiatic For retailers who want a vast rug choice to show their customers without overflowing their warehouse, there is the good book from Asiatic – a beautiful new publication which shows off 700 rugs across 85 ranges – which, with the various sizes on offer, gives about 3,000 options between its covers! Adding to that unparalleled portfolio were several newcomers on show in Solihull including Revive, an entry level polypropylene option in the fashionable retro style which has 12 colours in three designs – patchwork, medallion and faded. Fresco is another interesting addition which uses a custom tip-dyed process to ensure every rug is truly unique. An 80/20 wool rug with cotton, there are two Arabic designs in three colours each. Finally, Asiatic report a definite trend towards flatweave and expect to bring in new ranges to response to retailer demands to join their existing collections including Sloan, Ranger and Heys. Impact in store Alternative Flooring The Curve has landed as Alternative Floorings antidote to conventional in-store displays.“It’s all about helping the retailer to tell the story and to engage with the customer in order to make a better sale,” says Lorna Haigh at Alternative. That help comes in the form of a substantial Curve pod that is part display and part workstation – with a curved full height design, striking graphics, built-in sampling and even an integrated iPad. There are four display options to choose from which, taken together, can fill a 4m square area to create a stunning studio environment. A colourful difference Penthouse Carpets Penthouse has been taking a closer look at colour as a key motivator to move consumers to consider more interesting options for their floorcovering. “There is a real resurgence of interest in colour,” says sales and marketing director Jonathan Gamble (pictured right). “We’re trying to look a little deeper and rather than just follow fashion trends in the fabrics sector, we’re looking at complementary and matching palettes that creates a more distinctive colour range.” Flagship products Pentwist and Carlton have already been recoloured this year and there will be more to come. “Our aim is to give retailers what they want, rather than what we think they should have!” says Jonathan. One example on show at Solihull was the new one-price tombola from Penthouse that accommodates four ranges with a choice of 72 colours in 40 and 50 oz qualities. Royal warrant holder Axminster is emphasizing its pedigree and this is a thoroughly British range – an 80/20 wool carpet, designed and made in Axminster, Devon. “We are proud of our British heritage and ongoing commitment to wool and British manufacturing. Consumers like the credentials it brings to a top quality product,” says Hilary Clements of Axminster. Total carpet care Sebo Sebo is seeing growing success with its unique no-hassle approach to helping retailers add vacuum cleaners as a new revenue stream to their business and increasingly the service is seen as part of a professional package of carpet care. The company¹s products are market leaders and recommended by manufacturers across the trade. Sebo supply retailers with demonstration models and then fulfill consumers¹ orders direct. “The take-up of this has really accelerated in the last year as retailers see that they have nothing to lose and a nice potential gain in extra sales,” says Kevin Hockney of Sebo (pictured centre with the team). “But we¹re getting increasing interest in the concept from manufacturers and retailers who see the service as part of a total carpet-care package,” he says. “This approach safeguards the sale to ensure the carpet is correctly cared for and the retailer looks savvy and professional in adding to the service he offers. Solid sustainability Wools of New Zealand Innovation and social responsibility are at the core of Wools of New Zealand. Solihull saw them showcase their work with Solidwool in a project that seeks to investigate up-cycling opportunities for wool carpets. The end result is beautiful, designer furniture, all made from recycled carpet fibre and in the UK.
Examples of Solidwool designer furniture
Wools of New Zealand is committed to recycling and a fervent supporter of Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) who themselves are very much behind the Solidwool project as Jane Gardner, scheme manager at CRUK, explains: “Our aim at CRUK is to get the industry to stop thinking of carpet fibre as “waste”and to see it as a valuable resource. Wools of New Zealand’s drive to develop high value products from second life carpet fibres is a major leap in the right direction. 400,000 tonnes of carpet is uplifted each year in the UK and while CRUK has succeeded in diverting 25% of this, there is still much work to be done. Steven Parsons of WNZ said: “Our collaboration with Solidwool epitomises our ethical stance. Two years ago we introduced Crumbwool, an environmentally friendly carpet underlay made from recycled carpet fibres. Our work with Solidwool is a logical progression and fits perfectly with our mission to create wool interiors that are beautiful, comfortable and practical and have real integrity." British innovations Interfloor Interfloor was keen to show off improvements to its market-leading portfolio of flooring accessory products, ranging from technical advances to updated branded packaging and promised more innovations later this year. “We’ve improved the British-engineered Duralay Durafit System’s already superior performance, made it even easier to install, and given this heritage brand a refresh to reflect its world-class reputation and to highlight its green credentials,” said Interfloor CEO John Cooper. And that’s not all. The Gripperrods carpet gripper range has been refreshed to give retailers a highly competitively priced entirely British-made quality product that stands out from the competition thanks to its eye-catching packaging and improved specifications. “We’re making improvements to many of our processes and products, so there’ll be more news coming soon. Feature: Riviera Home
Riviera Home - a new force in the UK carpet market When Alan Bullock, retired from Victoria having had 40 years experience in the carpet business, with his later years spent as the CEO of Victoria PLC and MD of Victoria Carpets, it was his intention to retire and take life easy. That was until he was approached by Riviera Home Textiles from India, one of the world’s largest bath mat manufacturers, who had ambitious plans to expand into rugs and broadloom carpet manufacturing. Seeking Alan’s expertise in running a major international carpet manufacturing business, they wanted him to help in making their dream a reality by creating a business model that would enable them to manufacture high quality broadloom carpet and market them profitably in both the UK and North America. Starting in the Spring of 2013, Alan began by helping style and design unique high-end products which would offer great value for money and be differentiated from the mass of offerings currently available in the UK. Formulating a strategy which would allow Riviera Home UK to enter an already oversubscribed UK carpet market, Alan Bullock set out Riviera Home’s stall clearly and unambiguously with an ethical business model. The strategy was to trade with Independent Retailers, offering them really great products at competitive prices, which they could sell with confidence under Riviera Home’s own brand with the certainty of earning a good margin. Riviera Home’s business model is to operate as a niche manufacturer and distribute its products exclusively through an Authorised Dealer network of independent retailers by offering them a range of unique benefits (see panel right). Making a modest one off charge to become a licensed dealer, Riviera Home has in just 18 months opened dealerships with almost 300 accounts in the UK, all of who wanted to be part of the Riviera Home’s dealer network and to share its vision. Every single retailer who trades with Riviera has paid a licence fee and is committed to the marketing concept. Riviera Home’s parent company in India has so far invested upwards of US$35 million in factories and equipment to develop its broadloom and rug business. The investment includes new state-of-the-art Van de Weill wilton looms, modern traditional and tufted backing lines as well as tufting looms. Riviera also has one of the best traditional handloom wilton plants in the world, using skilled craftsmen in hand making wiltons up to 5m width. In the UK too, Riviera Home has invested heavily by employing five experienced Area Sales Managers to open and service its dealer accounts. It has invested in an extensive product portfolio to support the sale initiatives Alan Bullock as developed. Riviera Home has 14 ranges of carpet stocked in depth in Kidderminster to support its dealer network and has a growing following of independent retailers who are happy to back Riviera Home because of its unique ranges and its ethical trading policies. Riviera Home’s current product offer includes both hand loom wiltons and tufted ranges. Riviera Home’s latest introductions, Stowe, Sherborne and Sloane, which were launched in June, are three beautiful loop pile ranges crafted on tufters in 100% Pure New Wool, using the latest fashion colours and made in 5 metre width. Riviera Home also has further plans to introduce new fashionable colours into its ECO carpet collections later in the year and to extend its programme of 5 metre width ranges. Paul Phillips, the CEO of the BRM buying group, commented: “BRM and its retailers were delighted to back Riviera Home when Alan 56 July 2016

Rivera Home’s Authorised Dealer Network offers:
• Unique products not commonly available from others in the UK or Europe • Carpets with great styling & coloured using the latest fashion colours • Modern, attractive and high quality POS display unitary upon which to market its products • Exclusive access to a brand which can only be bought through its authorised dealer network • Ranges on which all of its appointed retailers can earn good margin • Geographical exclusivity within agreed territories • Shared marketing and advertising initiatives • Strict policing of the brand ethics: • No sales to “white van” fitters • No sales to distributors • No sales to internet traders • No sales through the insurance replacement market • No sales through buying groups, other than the BRM group who Alan Bullock respected and who he knew would enthusiastically promote Riviera Home’s products to its retailers.
came along to see us in late 2013 just before the Company was launched. Riviera really does have a great product offer and always delivers on what it promises. We love the opportunity of working with a mill who supports our retailer partners and really polices its brand. With its authorised dealer concept and its ambitions to have limited access to its products, our retailers have the opportunity of selling great flooring at good margin”. When speaking with Alan Bullock, The Stocklists asked about Riviera Home’s ambitions in the UK market and was told that Riviera Home does not envisage having more than 500 dealers in total in the whole of the UK and its business model is to work closely with its brand partners to grow mutually profitable business together rather than chasing low margin, volume business through hundreds of accounts where no-one is making money. Flower on Flooring Making the best of a good job Choosing the right accessories for any flooring installation can have a highly positive impact. Potential benefits range from improved quality to shorter installation times, with some products offering both of these and more besides. The Finishing Strip from QA Flooring Solutions has been designed to provide a smart, decorative edging profile to conceal the expansion gap around the perimeter of the room. It does not require glue to allow quicker finishing times and the company states the product is much neater and less obtrusive than traditional floorfinishing mouldings. It has a self-adhesive strip which fixes to the skirting board and allows the floor to move naturally below it. It is available in nine contemporary wood and stone colours and can be used with laminate, solid wood and vinyl flooring, to provide a clean and modern finish to the floor, says QA. Interfloor has over 800 flooring accessory products in its portfolio, including everything needed for the installation of floor coverings, such as top-selling brands Gripperrods and Stikatak. New for 2016, the Gripperrods carpet gripper range has been improved to offer a highly competitively-priced, British-made quality product. The range has improved branded packaging and POS and comprises four products: Gripperrods Standard, a competitively priced entry level gripper; Gripperrods Tackfast, the best-selling gripper; Gripperrods Professional, a top of the range gripper; and Gripperrods Contract, a wider gripper for more specialist commercial applications.
Interfloor has also introduced a new range of adhesives as part of improvements to its double-stick system, Duralay Durafit, trusted for heavy-wear areas. The range includes: DS950 Tackifier; DS900 Double Stick Carpet Adhesive; DS400 Very Low Emission Carpet Adhesive; and DS300 Fast Grab Multi-purpose. Woodpecker says flooring underlay and profiles are crucial components of a successful wood floor and no installation is complete without at least one of these accessories. Underlay is necessary for any floating wood floor installation, providing crucial support, cushioning and often moisture protection. The company states its underlays are tailored to suit distinct installation variables, managing even the trickiest of uneven subfloors and damp. Once a wood floor has been laid, profiles are key for concealing expansion gaps, breaks in doorways and bridges between floor coverings. Woodpecker’s best selling range of Contour solid wood profiles includes twins, ramps, scotias and stair nosings in a selection of heights and available in shades to complement every floor in the catalogue. Stairrods - Doorbar Eurocover, black
Stairrods UK reports that it has introduced a textured black finish to its Premier Trim solid brass range. The new addition brings the total to 10 high quality finishes available in four sizes: 90cm, 100cm, 180cm and 270cm. The Premier Trim Range is supplied in any colour, profile or size combination with no split tube charge. This allows the retailer or flooring contractor to price trims on a job-tojob basis, Stairrods explains, as well as up-selling when a high quality installation is required. Manufacturing high performance, high value underlays for wood, laminate and carpeted floors, KK Products and Foams also offers grippers, metals and other accessories. Its state-of-the-art production facilities for polyethylene foam materials are supported by widespread distribution throughout the UK and Europe. Its environmentally-friendly products contain no harmful HCFCs, are Class 0 fire rated and fully recyclable, the company states. This means that KK underlays are frequently specified in situations where environmental responsibility and product performance is an issue, often by local authorities, educational and health environments or by socially aware building owners in both the commercial arena and domestic housing. With a strong policy dedicated to the provision of ‘value systems’ the company further explains its products are delivered to market at prices which underpin its reputation for cost efficiency and competitive pricing.
“Here at floorwise, we know that it’s the details that really count and so our accessories are packed full of little touches that improve quality and usability.” floorwise top quality accessories
floorwise managing director Richard Bailey says the temptation to save money on accessories is a false economy, particularly when it comes to fundamentals such as gripper and underlay. "Here at floorwise, we know that it’s the details that really count and so our accessories are packed full of little touches that improve quality and usability. “Take our Diamond Gripper for example, with more pins and nails per inch, it provides a stronger hold but it also comes in wider than other grippers, minimising the chance of damage to skirtings. Something as simple as this makes it easier to fit and stops costly damage that can need attention after the installation. "This attention to detail, combined with excellent value and great quality makes floorwise accessories the perfect choice for installers wanting to deliver first rate installations at competitive rates," Mr Bailey concludes. Flair Rugs enhances its reputation as a trend-focused producer of rug design with new collections Persia and Venice, both presented for the very first time at this July’s Manchester Furniture Show, stand A67. Following on from a series of exciting launches in SS16, Flair is determined to keep abreast of the latest in interiors, using the Manchester Furniture Show to demonstrate its success in this very department. The Persian rug look is big news and hence Flair presents the middle-east inspired Persia collection to its flexible stable. Alongside is new introduction Venice, a range boasting high-low pile to coincide with renewed interest in the shaggy look. Gareth Davies, UK Sales and Marketing Director, comments: “At Flair Rugs, we strive to be the first to deliver retailers the very latest in rug design, providing them with an opportunity to pass on cutting edge looks to their customers.” Persia brings homeowners a choice of three Eastern designs with six colour variations. This is polypropylene at its very best, producing a high-end ‘super soft’ sensation without the use of jute in the backing for an extra forgiving feel. With its strong colour clarity and intricate patterning, there is no better way to gain such authentic design underfoot. Likewise, Venice uses high quality polypropylene to present two patterned shaggy designs, Imperial and Plazzo, this time in four colourways. Dense shaggy rugs are very much back on the agenda for UK homeowners and Flair has responded to this trend with its new Venice style. Not only carrying the host of practical benefits associated with polypropylene fibre, these rugs also bring enhanced texture through pile height variation. T 01457 850660

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…
• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee
Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.
www.flooringone.co.uk Contact: Glenn Harding Tel: 0121 683 1426 glenn.harding@flooringone.co.uk
• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view
• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group
• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,
any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings
While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.
• Review all the extra benefits and services to see
The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 64
Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types Tip Sheared

Level Loop
Multi-Level Loop
Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE
Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.
THE STOCKLISTS July 2016
CUT PILE
Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas. Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.
Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.
Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.
Berber

Velvet/Plush
Twist
Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect. 65

Flooring factsheet from Interfloor The resurgence of rubber underlay Research into consumer purchase behaviour commissioned by Interfloor in October 2015 shows more people than ever before are buying new underlay when they purchase new carpet.
Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world.
The research suggests this is in part due to improved understanding of the various products and their benefits gained through Internet research and advice from retailers’ own sales consultants. The in-store consumer experience is key to the rising conversion rates, as it gives retailers an opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of the different products on offer. Consumers want hands-on experience of quality products which offer high levels of comfort and are fit for purpose. They are less concerned about price and more interested in long-term performance and this has led to the resurgence of traditional rubber underlays such as Tredaire Colours Red, Interfloor’s premium sponge rubber underlay. Sponge rubber underlays have been around since the 1950s for very good reasons. In fact, Tredaire launched Willow Green, the UK’s first sponge rubber underlay in 1956. Sponge rubber underlays are extremely comfortable; no other underlay product produces quite the same feel underfoot. They are also exceptionally good at minimising both impact sound and airborne sound between rooms. They are incredibly flexible and cover more applications than any other underlay type, including specialist low tog underlays for underfloor heating and thin and dense underlays for hard flooring. In a Stocklist readers’ survey published in November 2015, 30% said they were selling more underlay and although 60% find it easy to sell underlay, only 50% were using POS to demonstrate its benefits – one of the key reasons customers visit retailers is to feel samples (83%) or walk on the carpet to see how it feels (26%). Interfloor offers POS items including custom-made swatch books, presentation folders and hanging samples with instore foot testers coming soon. All are designed to help retailers sell exactly the right underlay to every customer that comes to their store.
Over 80% of those who didn’t buy new underlay at the time of their carpet purchase believe that they can use their existing underlay (57%), that underlay isn’t necessary (19%) or an expensive add-on (12%) and yet underlay is a great opportunity to improve the way the consumer feels about the total purchase – and hence the retailer.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.
www.interfloor.com
Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. www.interfloor.com
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.
Benefits
Types
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet
PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.
Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Crumb
Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.
PU foam
Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor.
www.carpenter.limited.uk
Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.
www.underlay.com
Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

www.numa-online.co.uk
Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).
Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.
Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 70
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening
Shedding
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
Shading
Indentations
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.
Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.
It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
Pulling Loops
Samples
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet
SAFE
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
DURABLE EASYCARE
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
Comfort
COMFORT
Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.
Safety
The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.
100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich
britishwool.org.uk campaignforwool.org THE STOCKLISTS July 2016
Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 77
