New exotic designs in Shalimar and Magali come in of-the-moment duck egg blue, while the new Siena brings a twist on the resurgent black and white diamond found in the existing York. Lattice also joins as an overscale weave, alongside colour updates in tonal grey and duck egg blue for many existing styles. Brand-new for 2018, Ultimate Tones celebrates the ever-present grey in authentic natural looks, from the concrete of Oxley through the modern stone of Brighton to the rustic slate of Burlington and chevron wood/stone combination of Moroso. From an ultra-cool architectural look to the stunning mix of wood and stone for that warehouse apartment feel, Ultimate Tones is certain to make a stylish addition in any home. Adopting the new V-groove technology for a deep embossed ‘edge’ that enhances the plank look, Ultimate Timber PU brings super-stylish wood plank-effects in Jacobsen, Cartier, Edgewood and Cimarron; with Pamera taking care of chevron duties and Bristol ideal for small rooms needing a narrow plank. The award winners will be announced at the beginning of September and ten exceptional “Innovation Gold” titles will be handed out at the Harrogate show.

The “star” judges line-up (l to r): Chris Moffat, Deborah Barker, Martin West and Bridgette Kelly The Innovation Stars will quickly be recognised as a key credential in the industry - with a distinctive star logo that can be used on promotions. what cordless vacs lack

Small, compact and handy to use, cordless vacuum cleaners are seen over our TV channels and social media and there is no doubt that they have a place in the cleaning arsenal. However, they are not a replacement for a powerful corded vacuum cleaner in a busy house. Cordless vacuum cleaners use rechargeable batteries to power them. These batteries, which are generally lithium-ion, have undoubtedly improved but they still lack the ability to supply the power needed to enable cordless products to match the performance of a corded, mainsoperated machine when it comes to sucking up dust and dirt. More frustratingly, the need to recharge batteries means the cleaner is not always available. When the battery dies, there is no alternative but to stop cleaning, plug in and wait. Full charging times can vary from two to a lengthy sixteen hours. Examples of cordless vacuum cleaners include small handheld cleaners and stick-like models more akin to traditional vacuums in design. Running times for cordless machines vary considerably depending on the model: the shortest is quoted at around five to six minutes and the longest at up to an hour. Using motorised tool accessories reduces running times. They do offer convenience for cleaning small areas. They are easy to carry around because of their light weight and they have the ability to get into corners. There is no searching for a power socket and no trip hazard from a trailing cable or tangling around furniture, people or pets. However, batteries have a limited life expectancy of around 500 charging cycles. Battery powered vacuum cleaners are also useful for cleaning tasks that are only of a short duration, such as cleaning car seats and for spot cleaning crumbs and cobwebs. In commercial environments, such as shops, they are used for dealing with visible surface litter during trading hours when it would be intrusive or impractical to use a corded machine. Due to their compact size, cordless vacuum cleaners may even be the answer for very small flats where storage space is at a premium. Conversely, corded, mains-operated vacuum cleaners score highly because of their superior cleaning power and ability to make light work of the tough challenges of everyday cleaning, making them essential in family homes, especially where there are pets. Both upright and cylinder machines are available that are capable of excellent, fade-free cleaning performance, day after day without ever needing to be recharged. With many models, their lightweight and ergonomic design means that they are easy to use for long periods. They are versatile, often come with a wide range of accessories and are able quickly to clean large areas and thoroughly brush the pile of carpet while sucking away ingrained dirt. Quite simply, while cordless vacuums cleaners undoubtedly have their place, they are really a complementary product to mains-operated, corded machines which offer enduring performance, durability and a depth of clean that is unsurpassed. ‘Homes’ contract zone

The team behind the UK’s largest flooring trade show in Harrogate is launching a new opportunity aimed at contract flooring suppliers. The new ‘Contract Flooring Zone’ will be part of the HOMeS 2018 exhibition which runs at Olympia, london on 28-29 november 2018.

Sad month for Cavalier

June was a sad month for Cavalier Carpets with the loss two well-known and highly respected individuals – company founder gerry lowe and also Malcom Tillson, sales representative for Scotland.

HOMES 2018 is run by Ocean Media Group, the new owners of The Flooring Show, as part of its highly successful portfolio of events and publications for the housing industry. HOMES has grown considerably in the past five years and is the UK’s only event dedicated to residential development, asset management and procurement. It attracts over 3,500 visitors. “Our HOMES exhibition offers contract suppliers the opportunity to meet a mix of buyers, specifiers, designers and contractors who already attend the HOMES show,” confirms The Flooring Show event manager Kane Thomas. “And we’ll also be utilising our existing flooring database to invite along any South East based interior designers, buyers, architects and specifiers. “This affiliation with the HOMES show is a good opportunity for some of our Flooring Show exhibitors to grow awareness of their contract offer with a high-quality audience – we felt it was a connection worth developing and reaction so far has been very positive.” In this launch year space to exhibit within the new Contract Flooring Zone will be limited to just 10 suppliers. T 020 7772 8312 www.homesevent.co.uk

Gerry Lowe (pictured left above) passed away on June 2 aged 72. He founded the company in 1972 and had been chairman of the family business since 2007. He leaves Cavalier in the capable hands of his sons, Nathan, Hans and Julian. He started work as a catalogue salesman but joined the flooring trade to cut a colourful character, known for his white suits and hard bargaining in the early days of the Harrogate show. He ran the business as managing director for more than 30 years before taking more of a back seat in recent times but still taking an active interest. See The Stocklists next month for a longer review of Gerry’s life in the industry. Cavalier’s sales representative for Scotland, Malcolm Tillson (pictured right) died on June 9, aged 59. Known as the company’s “best-dressed rep”, Malcolm was well liked as a quirky character with a reputation for integrity and reliability. He was also well known for his charity work, including the Round Table. Both will be greatly missed by family, friends and colleagues in the trade. T 01254 268 000 www.cavaliercarpets.co.uk

News from Karndean Designflooring unveils new mixed material, oak and limestone designs as part of its Opus collection The UK’s market leader in luxury vinyl flooring Karndean Designflooring is expanding its stylish Opus collection with six new modern and contemporary hues including limed oak wood, shuttered concrete and limestone designs.

designed for home decorators looking for a sophisticated floor in an extra large plank (48” x 9”) and tile (18” x 24”) design, Opus also welcomes two exclusive (18” x 3”) small ‘herringbone’ tile designs for the first time.

with the growing trend to match designs ‘room to room’ in separate rooms, open plan spaces and broken living areas, the new small tile design – available in Fumo and argento can be perfectly placed alongside the matching full stone tile and laid in a herringbone, block or brick laying pattern to bring an extra sense of style and interest to any room.

Combining the natural characteristics of european Oak with a unique shuttered concrete look, Fabrica is thought provoking with its classic knots and cross-sawn markings subtly displayed. The contemporary white tones can be ideal for creating a modern and clean décor.

Ideal for home decorators looking for a soft and sophisticated finish with distinctive grain details, Columba and avena are designed to offer a neutral limed palette suitable for any room.

“We’re delighted to be adding new wood and stone designs to our popular Opus collection,” Joining already popular grey and poured concrete designs, Opus welcomes – Fumo, argento and lutum – as its new limestone offering. Interestingly, Karndean’s in-house design team sourced the original piece of limestone whilst trekking local quarries throughout england, and successfully created three individual designs. “we’re delighted to be adding new wood and stone designs to our popular Opus collection,” explains Stella Coyle, national retail sales manager of Karndean designflooring. She said: “Most recognised for its modern greys and sleek designs, Opus is extremely popular with style conscious home decorators looking for a larger plank and tile design. The contemporary new hues will work perfectly in a wide range of décor schemes including Scandi, country and modern.

NEWS F Ball goes dutch

F. Ball and Co. ltd., has agreed a new distribution deal with dutch flooring distributor dersimo, which will see F. Ball build on its expansion into the dutch flooring market.

As part of this new association, sales and marketing teams from Dersimo travelled from Maassluis in the Netherlands to tour F. Ball’s headquarters and state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Staffordshire, where the company’s range of high performance products are manufactured. There they received an intensive induction and product training session, with the opportunity to experience using a range of subfloor preparation products and adhesives for themselves, in F. Ball’s purpose-built training centre.

engineering vinyl innovation

PRO-TeK wPC – the next generation engineered vinyl floor – has launched in the UK. developed to meet the demands of the commercial and residential sectors, PRO-TeK wPC features the latest technology and offers superior performance, ease of installation and low maintenance, as well as reduced lifecycle costs and eco-benefits. Five collections offer a total of 40 designs, in wood and tile effects, with matching four-sided bevelled edges and a complete range of matching accessories.

The new waterproof WPC engineered vinyl floor is a phthalate-free wood plastic composition design with a robust construction, measuring 7mm to 8.5mm in thickness and comprising seven individual layers. The durable commercial-grade wear resistant layer is 0.7mm thick, with a UV antiscratch finish. Below the fade-resistant décor layer and luxury vinyl top layer, a highly stable and 100% waterproof core – with glueless locking system – sits above a premium IXPE foam underlay base. These combined features provide a flooring option that’s fast to install, can be laid over most existing hard floor coverings and is compatible with ‘wet’ underfloor heating systems. Boards lock together to create a highly durable and dimensionally stable surface that also offers acoustic impact sound performance up to 24db.

Jonathan goold, F. Ball export Business Manager (left) and Marc dubbeldam, Managing director of dersimo (right) The development marks another step in the UK company’s growth within the Dutch market and as a key distributor for F. Ball, Dersimo sales and marketing teams will be supported by F. Ball technical representatives based in the Netherlands.

As well as performance benefits, PRO-TEK WPC’s construction brings considerable time-saving benefits to the flooring contractor. Minimal floor preparation and the product’s integral underlay cut installation time dramatically, whilst the construction also eliminates problems associated with ‘telegraphing’, where subfloor irregularities can distort a vinyl surface, creating gaps and an uneven appearance. In addition, all materials used are 100% recyclable.

Jonathan Goold, Export Business Manager at F. Ball and Co. Ltd., said: “We are committed to servicing the Dutch flooring market, and developing our ties with Dersimo is an important step towards achieving our objectives. We look forward to strengthening this relationship in the future and providing the wider contract flooring market with first class installation products.”

PRO-TEK WPC designs are offered in a range of formats, textures and shades. Wood effects are divided into four collections – Excel, Essential, Distressed and Excel Long Plank – whilst Excel Tile includes eight tile designs, in marble, slate and travertine effects. Matching WPC vinylwrapped accessories span from doorway T-bars, to stair set tread and riser profiles. The new designs will be officially launched in the UK at The Flooring Show, Harrogate (16-18 September 2018) on Stand no. C14.

Richard comes unstuck!

well-known flooring industry figure and Marketing Manager of F. Ball and Co. ltd. for 20 years, Richard Harris is retiring from the company at the end of June. Prior to joining F. Ball, Richard worked in a number of marketing and sales roles in the paints and adhesives industries, after starting his marketing career as a Marketing Assistant for a paper manufacturer. Throughout his time promoting the performance benefits of trade products to industry professionals, Richard has benefited from a strong technical background, having obtained a degree in chemistry from the University of Bristol. Opting for a career in marketing, rather than a more vocational option, Richard honed his marketing skills over the next 18 years, before bringing his experience and expertise to F. Ball in 1998. Commenting on his time at the company, Richard said: “I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since I started at F. Ball; it’s just flown by. Looking back, though, the company has moved on an incredible amount since I first started and it’s been a fantastic opportunity to market the company and it’s products during this time. We’ve seen some great developments introduced over the years that have been a gift for a marketeer to work with; as well as the investment that has been made in the manufacturing and training facilities. F. Ball’s been a great company to work for and I’ve been lucky to work with a great team of people.” F. Ball Managing Director, Mark Hughes added: “Richard’s done a great job at F. Ball and, while we’re all sorry to see him leave the company, we wish him a long and happy retirement and offer him our gratitude for the hard work and dedication he has put into the job.”

Cormar’s Chris Isaacs (centre left) and David Cormack (centre right) were presented with the award by Mandy Powell and Peter Karra from Flooring One.

Looking ahead, Richard aims to spend more time enjoying the outdoors, especially walking, and doing “the things you’re too busy to do when you’re working.” T 01583 361 633

Marketing insights Rugs offer consumers creative freedom Today consumers have ultimate creative freedom in selecting the perfect rug for their interior. whether it’s a stand-alone piece, or a customisation of a broadloom favourite, rugs create a focal point with a power to instantly transform a space. whilst traditionally manufactured rugs still dominate the market, the availability of bespoke services allows traditional broadloom retailers to access the rug market. antiquarian, Classic Brick by louis de Poortere

Retrieved from the Muskabad archives of Louis De Poortere, Antique Bakthiari celebrates the traditional patterns from the Iranian tribe of the same name. A floral diamond in feather shape frames that’s been recoloured for today’s homes, it is hand-distressed for that time-worn feel. Antique Bakthiari comes in three beautiful and intensely coloured combinations. Each hand-finished jacquard woven quality is made from 100% cotton and comes with an anti-slip backing. Made in Belgium in a range of sizes from 140 x 200cm up to 290 x 390cm, Antiquarian is a stand-out collection that brings fabled quality to iconic designs reimagined for the modern home. Previously only available to the designer decorator sector, customisation has become a big trend in interiors. Bought to the masses through the ability to choose fabrics on furniture, today consumers can change colourations on wallpaper and even order hand-crafted accessories. Whilst customisation of broadloom carpet is still largely limited by minimum volumes, the ability to create a bespoke rug has bought a new level of creative freedom for consumers wanting a statement floor.

Rugs provide an ideal way to introduce pattern that creates the wow factor without dominating the decor scheme. Louis de Poortere has launched the stunning Antiquarian collection of rugs inspired by the company’s heritage and drawing on original designs from its archive. Centred around three designs in the Heriz, Bakthiari and Hadchlu patterns that formed some of its best-selling face-to-face wool rug qualities from the 1960s – 2000s, the Antiquarian collection reinvents these iconic designs for today’s homes. These rugs present a modern cotton flatweave with a heavy hand-distressed effect for an authentic worn look. “Antiquarian is a truly extraordinary machine-made collection that draws on our library to celebrate some of our most iconic rugs,” explains Alan Russell, sales director. “While traditional at their heart, each design has been given a thoroughly modern rework and hand-distressed to give the worn-vintage look that’s a huge driver in contemporary rug design. The range is a great way to bring-back old favourites in a manner that’s undeniably modern and far from pastiche.”

Established in 1986, Crucial Trading today boasts over 80 different ranges including the award-winning Mississippi and Fabulous. Recent launches include Sisool Rocks and Wool Snug. All of these designs can be made into rugs using the company’s bespoke rug service. Designed entirely to a customer’s specifications, the rug is then made by the talented team of craftspeople at the Kidderminster workshop.

“Using the new online Rug Builder, customers are taken through the process by choosing the floorcovering, then selecting the style and material for the border and finally the dimensions.” a bespoke rug using Crucial Trading’s Rug Builder

The legendary 782-Hadchlu, often known as the ‘Notary Rug’, was famed for its ability to blend into a classic notary study as easily as it could into a sleek yuppie interior. Now reimagined in a new palette and with a distressed effect, Antique Hadschlu retains this versatility, bringing a style available in two elegant colourways. Showing a familiar yet almost-forgotten pattern, Antique Heriz features a large central medallion and a stair patterned perimeter. With the original inspired by traditional Persian designs, this modern reinterpretation brings a relaxed vintage vibe, the distressed-effect fitting for today’s interiors. In six colours from the punch of Classic Brick to the oceanic blues of Golden Horn Biege and moss of Avlu Green, Antique Heriz is ready to complement any scheme.

NEWS Fresh look for Cormar

Cormar Carpets has unveiled its brand new look – the first in over a quarter of a century.

Developed with the consumer at the forefront of the redesign and following extensive research, a refreshed brand identity is being rolled out over the summer. The brand name moves to ‘Cormar Carpet Company’ and the new look highlights the company’s ongoing evolution and underpins its role as a leader in the UK carpet industry. It is accompanied by an integral message ‘Making your home just right’ that captures the essence of the carpet brand and its value throughout the home decoration process.

Recofloor big draw

The annual Recofloor promotion will take place in September this year, offering flooring contractors who recycle their waste vinyl flooring through altro and Polyflor’s scheme another opportunity to win an ‘unforgettable experience’ with a Red letter days gift card.

Every flooring company raising a Recofloor collection throughout September will be entered into a draw with a chance to win one of three £100 Red Letter Days gift cards. The prizes will be offered to the first three names chosen at random and the draw is open to new and existing Recofloor members who raise a collection during September 2018.

“The decision to refresh your brand is never an easy one, but we feel that the new image for the company, while reflecting the traditional Cormar ethos, carries with it new appeal to consumers, for the digital age,” says David Cormack marketing director. Phase one of the rebrand will be rolled out from July and will incorporate an updated website, new van livery, staff uniforms, signage, literature and stationery. Over the summer the existing in-store displays will be updated to reflect the new Cormar Carpet Company logo. a leading figure in flooring, Martin west has left Headlam to take control of william armes, the well-known manufacturer of doormats, rugs and runners.

William Armes was founded in 1830 and has been run as a family business with considerable investment recently in a purpose-built production facility in Sudbury where the company makes its famous Dandy mat and a whole host of other cotton, polypropylene, coir and rubber mats and runners plus a range of rugs. The business was bought by a trade consortium at the beginning of this year and Martin, who is also one of the investors, was appointed managing director. Martin has over 30 years in flooring, most recently heading up Kingsmead Carpets and as a senior executive within the Headlam flooring distribution group. “This is a great opportunity to build on an established brand and we’ll be investing in the potential of this business to expand in the flooring retail sector through organic growth combined with potential future acquisitions,” said Martin. Positive pool transformation

a hydrotherapy pool for children and young people with significant physical and learning difficulties has been transformed using specialist products from altro, opening up a stimulating new world of sensory fun and excitement with no compromise on safety or hygiene. Vranch House is a centre for the treatment of over 2,000 outpatients with physical difficulties, a provider of various therapies throughout Devon and an independent Day School in Exeter. Hydrotherapy has always been on the agenda at Vranch House, but this vital treatment has recently been given a new lease of life with a completely refurbished state-of-the-art indoor heated swimming pool, including Altro Whiterock hygienic wall sheet. Altro Whiterock White is impact resistant, grout-free and easy to clean. Its smooth white surface and classical purity make it a timeless choice for any interior. Made from a high-quality, PVCu polymer that can handle temperatures up to 60°C, Altro Whiterock White meets all current European Union (EU) Directives on health and hygiene. Architect Carole Trim says: “The project was a great success, but of course the real measure is how the children feel about their new hydrotherapy pool. The open day when the new pool was unveiled was a very special and emotional occasion. The pupils were so excited and delighted and it made us all realise how much of a positive difference the new facility will make to their lives. “I was very impressed with the professional attitude of everyone involved in this project. Altro responded to our needs immediately, got involved and were as passionate as we were about creating the best possible result and the right solution for the wonderful children at Vranch House. The installers and contractors were also very professional.”

National Flooring Show

SHOW REVIEW PART 2

Our second look at the launches, trends and innovations at the agenda-setting Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show in Solihull.

“This is one of the best opportunities of the year for retailers to see right across the industry in one go with everything that’s latest and greatest.”

Great Gatsby Asiatic Carpets asiatic’s exemplary quality was in evidence at the exhibition and two new launches set the scene beautifully. Lulu is a versatile microfibre polyester rug in 10 colours with a fine, dense finish, while the new Spiral range has a distinctive multi-level texture to create a soft, chunky rug. And look out for something different that is coming through from Asiatic later this month. Gatsby is a striking collection of printed viscose rugs in complex vintage led abstract designs, available in eight fashionable colours. “These are exceptional rugs that are absolutely on-trend and the initial response has been very positive, we expect the collection to sell strongly,” says Neil Farrell of Asiatic. Distinctively different Axminster Carpets Many retailers demand “something different” in the me-too world of plain carpets and axminster have delivered with something of a coup at the Solihull show in the debut of their remarkable alaya range. And a combination of lambswool and alpaca ensure that “soft-touch” is not a label attached only to synthetic fibre – this is a beautiful, premium carpet which has a finish like brushed velvet and the alpaca gives a sophisticated, subtle shading effect to the pile across an attractive selection of 15 colours. Axminster Carpets benefits from its ownership by leading wool specialists Dawsons whose experts have been instrumental in creating the unique “soft and serene” range. “I think we have found the sweet spot in carpet marketing with Alaya,” says Axminster’s Kaouther Montacer-Shilvock. Axminster also commented on the success of their Wool Academy which was launched at the start of the year and invites retailers to take a closer look at the techniques and technology of wool production. “This has proved very popular and gives retailers the confidence to talk about premium wool products to the customers,” said Kaouther. The opportunity to inspire Adam Carpets adam is developing some of the smartest stripes in the sector which are due to launch in September and the Solihull show was a preview for retailers to see what’s in store, to prototype the colours and options and to listen to retailers views on what consumers want. Adam is doing something definitely different and up market in this area, using an 80/20 mix with premium nylon to create a better product which holds a well-defined stripe. “There is still a strong demand for stripes, and retailers are asking us for a more refined premium quality product, made with the latest furnishing fashion colours,” says MD Chris Adam. The skills of our people in our own design studio and dyehouse on site means we are well positioned to respond to that demand. We have put considerable care into the details of the construction of the carpet, so now we have a product that is robust, softer cut pile and yet very fashionable.’ The approach will be seen in the Autumn with the launch of two ranges, a smart 40oz pinstripe design in six colours and a very distinctive “deckchair” range which is going to attract even more attention with its white, narrow twist stripe alongside a broad, coloured velvet stripe including tonal greys and blues and more colourful options. “We want to inspire people with this range,” says Chris.

Talking of inspiration, Adam has also been putting the finishing touches to its collaboration with posh paint company Little Greene and now consumers can leaf through an attractive colour guide booklet that shows combinations between the paint collections and Adam’s legendary Fine Worcester Twist and Castlemead collections. “We noticed consumers were coming into flooring stores with paint swatches in hand so we thought we would complete the circle and create paint and carpet swatches in the same place,” says Chris. “This collaboration is a great match in every sense of the word!” The colour coordination has been grouped into three categories – neutrals, tonals and then a third category intriguingly called “you might consider” which presents a more adventurous option to challenge consumers. Countering the ‘less’ in cordless! SEBO The growth of the cordless vacuum cleaner is proving to be a challenge for carpet manufacturers and retailers as the low power of these appliances threatens to undermine the performance of domestic installations. “Cordless machines are being marketed as a direct replacement for regular, corded machines but they don’t have the power to do the job properly and the wrong machine can really harm the long-term performance of a carpet and generate complaints for the industry,” says Kevin of SEBO. Hockney Scott Cochrane, Retail Sales director of Kardean desigflooring, is pictured with Jodie Fletcher, Retail Not only are cordless machines lower theMarketing userOpus. executive, in front of the latest POS forpowered, Knight Tile and has to choose between run-time and performance due to limited battery capacity and this makes proper cleaning difficult to achieve. “Corded machines deliver constant power and performance that gets to the bottom of the pile to really clean carpet,” says Kevin. The UK carpet industry agrees and most major companies endorse the SEBO selection of vacuum cleaners including the market-leading Automatic Pet X7, which has just won the prestigious IER award for 2018. SEBO offers retailers a sophisticated marketing plan to sell the machines while SEBO keeps the stock and handles order fulfilment.

Subtle style that sells Kingsmead Carpets Kingsmead has achieved a fine reputation for wool loop best-sellers and building on this strength is their re-launch of the popular Kaleidoscope collection. With three new grey tone stripes and one new plain there’s lots new to look at. “Everyone who has seen the range has said it is so on-trend and just what the market is looking for,” says Kingsmead’s Clint Carver. “The range is currently hitting the marketplace as we speak.” Also on show was Kingsmead’s new fashionable Clean Easy super soft Bliss, launching in July and made with a deep, luxury 68oz 2-ply polypropylene. The colour options are subtle and exceptional. “Half of these are today’s colours and half of them are tomorrow’s,” reflecting the careful research the company has undertaken to get the colour bank just right for modern interiors tastes. Plainly different Hugh Mackay Hugh Mackay has come up with a very attractive answer to the trend for subtle, sophisticated patterns with their new durham edition which was launched at the buying group show in Solihull. The subdued graphic design and two-colour yarn sets this 80/20 twist carpet apart and visitors to the show gave it a warm welcome, prior to its market launch in August in two widths and 16 colours – including some bold contemporary tones. “It can be difficult to get it right with a two-colour yarn but we have spent a year in development with this range and we are really pleased with the result,” says Vince Holden of Hugh Mackay. “It is great to have something for retailers to offer that gets away from plains and we have had a strong reaction at the show.” T 01429 892555 www.hughmackay.co.uk

Swinging samples Brockway Carpets You wouldn’t want to miss any of Brockway’s impressive portfolio in your store presentation so now the company has ensured you don’t have to – an innovative point-of-sale solution launched at the Solihull show gives you the lot in a single wall unit! The revolutionary swing-arm wall unit opens like a book to reveal all of Brockway’s 18 ranges in a display that is only 1200mm wide and 442mm deep and can be swapped out with existing units. The approach ensures consumers can see good sized samples across the full colour options with room for all the pattern books underneath. “Retailers have reacted very positively to this idea,” says Shaun Lewis of Brockway. “It’s ideal where space is limited but also the browsable approach is more engaging than a simple static display and gets consumers more involved in their selection.” The units can carry the full Brockway product collection or customised if retailers prefer to tailor the display to a selection best matched to their customer profile. The law on their side Carpet Foundation The Carpet Foundation trumpeted becoming the only government approved alternative dispute Resolution (adR) supplier in the UK carpet industry. with consumer law changing, and all retailers now needing a dispute resolution process, their success was warmly welcomed by their retail members. Encouragingly, and indicative of the seriousness of the law change, the Foundation received five concrete enquiries to join from non-members, one of whom has already signed up since the Show. The others are confidently expected to follow. All Patron Members were equally supportive, and they too saw ADR approval as a ‘feather in the cap’ for the Foundation. Discussions took place with two potential new Patron Members. Chief Executive Andrew Stanbridge, pictured here with retail member Paul Gilbert, said: “This was probably our best trade show. We had new ‘news’ but everyone, member or not, was overwhelmingly enthusiastic about what we were doing.” www.carpetfoundation.com

Tech savvy specialists MasterPiece Systems The clever people at MasterPiece are pushing ahead with further developments of their popular cloud-based measuring and estimating systems for floor fitting. The latest updates include a manual planning option to allow specialists who are well versed in planning to plan on screen by doing a drag and drop. This is offered as either an alternative to, or in addition to, the autoplanner. Manual planning has the additional advantage of supporting offline planning. A new automated costing facility now allows for rules-based estimating so that flooring retailers can customise the package to cater for their specific costing protocols for, for example, applying a labour charge for HSL or per winder or bullnose. Masterpiece have also updated their Windows-based contract version which is used widely for large commercial project planning. Flower on Flooring

by Dennis Flower

Keeping flooring installations in the best trim When aiming to achieve the best flooring installation quality, the well-known expression ‘The devil is in the detail’ is highly relevant, relating to the need to ensure that a complete service is provided.

In addition to making sure the correct type of flooring has been sourced and installed, the need to then finish off with the appropriate profiles and trims is paramount. To assist with the latter, The Stocklists magazine asks the major suppliers of profiles and trims to explain their latest introductions and best selling products.

“Profiles not only look great but also help to protect and hide the edge of coverings whilst allowing for a seamless transition between floor heights”

Stairrods reports it is working on a number of trims to improve flooring projects and is aiming to launch these at the Harrogate Show in September.

Company director John Raine says: “Out now is our new ‘stick down’ Premier Matwell trim Stairrod’s premier lVT inlays for lVT dryback for use with coir and ribbed matting, available in three size options to allow for various subfloor preps re latex/plywood installs. Stairrods now offer split box barrier foam to aid latex installs.”

The company’s new Premier Matwell trim (floating) offers three expansion options for floating floors, from click to 22mm wood with various thicknesses of underlays. These can be used with coir and ribbed matting, offering ‘joists’ for height adjustment on the thicker floorings designed to save the fitter a great deal of time on site.

It also offers new Premier Inlays, with a base material of solid brass, for lVT dryback 2.5mm and 3mm, providing a similar appearance to highend installs of the best hardwood floors. new Premier doubleZ 13 and Premier Single13 naplocks are also available for thick pile Carpets.

Stairrods has also undertaken a total re-design of the 50 year old

Homelux states that it understands that finishing details make all the difference to the overall look of a project. That is why it provides a high quality range of profiles to help complete any flooring or tiling project.

“Our range of Homelux profiles not only look great but also help to protect and hide the edge of coverings whilst allowing for a seamless transition between floor heights,” says the company.

Flooring factsheet Luxury underfoot

from Interfloor

duralay underlays for lVT create the perfect installation

Interfloor has developed a specialist collection of duralay underlays and adhesives designed to make luxury vinyl tiles (lVT) even more comfortable underfoot and to ensure the tiles look good for longer. The new LVT underlays are quick to fit, easy to work with, and help to reduce the need for sub-floor preparation and damage to flooring due to uneven sub-floors. The LVT adhesives are suitable for single stick, double-stick or for directly sticking LVT to the sub-floor. Duralay LVT Multi-Fit Underlay can be fitted loose lay, single stick or double-stick depending upon installation requirements and provides increased underfoot comfort and improved noise reduction. It also provides an excellent sub-floor, masking minor surface imperfections, and helping prevent the overstraining of joints. Duralay Multi-Fit underlay is particularly suited to larger areas and commercial installations. Duralay LVT Low-Grab Underlay is a versatile solution which can be used to install ‘click system’ luxury vinyl tiles. The underlay is loose-laid over the sub-floor or existing flooring significantly reducing sub-floor preparation times and the new flooring is positioned and laid onto the underlay’s unique low grab backing, holding the tiles in position preventing movement during and after installation. Duralay LVT Dry-Back Underlay can be used to install ‘dry back’ luxury vinyl tiles. A release film is peeled back to expose the pre-applied adhesive, the new flooring is then positioned and pressed onto the underlay’s unique high grab backing. The adhesive allows an open time whereby tiles or planks can be lifted and re-positioned.

new high-end edgings for luxury installations Interfloor has introduced new premium edgings offering a top-quality addition to its existing Gripperrods range. The new Premier floor edgings are available in two modern finishes that will complement the current trends in luxury home accessories. The Premier range includes a very on-trend brushed steel nickel or an elegant bright chrome which will co-ordinate well with other home accessories, light switches and door handles to ensure a seamless finish. Both finishes are available in six specialist trims designed to provide the perfect solution for all types of flooring. For further information, please visit www.interfloor.com

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 62

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 64

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

F L O O R I N G FAC T S H E E T WOOL FIBRE

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain. British wool is bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to a carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 Wool Rich – Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Benefits of Wool Carpet 1. Practical

4. Internal Environment

Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

2. Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency.

Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production.

3. Safety

Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

5. Eco/Environmental

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.
