Flooring Factsheet Adhesives

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 5

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter

• shedding • pulled loops

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 10

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS June 2014

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

A successful show

OUR SALES TEAM

At the time of writing we are all just returning from a busy Buying Group Show at Cranmore Park Solihull. Telenzo look back at the successful launch of several new products, both wool and polyamide, and were honoured with a second place for best stand at the show. Phil Hartley, CEO Telenzo UK, says “We were happy to be able to present our customers the new ranges at the BGNFS and the feedback was overwhelming!” The latest addition to the Tube Collection – Circle Line, Docklands and new colours in the Centre Point – proved to be a real winner. The colours Sky, Willow and Mustard were extremely well received. Bloomsbury and the tip sheared coordinate Harrow are also new in the Telenzo portfolio. These elegant 3-ply 100% New Zealand wool products are available in six contemporary earthy shades, providing any interior with a sophisticated look.

Sensit and sensibility

Incredibly soft, exceptionally durable and with a beautiful silk-like sheen, Balta Broadloom’s Sensit Supreme is the latest carpet to bring the innovative fibre to homes across the country.

The 12 natural shades of the new collection, including on-trend greys and a delicate lilac, benefit from the 15-year Stain Safe warranty offered by its two-ply Sensit fibre, helping to preserve even the most delicate of shades over time. Packing in 200% more filaments per yarn than standard easy care qualities, Sensit Supreme is also outstandingly soft, making it a sure fire hit for homes looking for indulgent carpet. “Sensit carpets are becoming popular as homeowners want their homes to feel indulgent and luxurious,” says Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta Broadloom. “A reflection of looking towards the home as a long-term investment, this elegant look is a fresh and welcome addition to the shop floor with the silk-like quality adding a new and more interesting dimension. With Sensit carpets, retailers can capitalise on this trend while still providing customers with exceptional value.” Sensit Supreme comes in a four-metre width and is recommended for use for most areas of the home. Withstanding cleaning with a diluted bleach solution, the range possesses a 10-year wear warranty. T +32 56 62 22 11

Mock the croc

Opulent and elegant, Corium leather flooring from Granorte captures a new mode of luxurious living.

Featuring real leather in a range of textured effects, Corium takes the beautiful aesthetic of this natural product and combines it with the practical advantages of modern engineered cork flooring. With Uniclic for fast and glue-free installation, the entire Corium collection benefits from a moisture resistant HDF core and in-built cork underlay that improves comfort and provides better acoustic and thermal insulation. The 15 different decors, including a decadent ‘mock croc’ look, are available in plank and tile formats with a micro-bevel on all four edges to add definition. Microban antibacterial protection helps the floor to fight the growth of bacteria while the Aqua2K+ waterborne finish provides a surface that is easy to maintain and resists scuffing and staining. “Homeowners are investing in their homes as a longterm proposition and so are paying more attention to luxurious finishes, with the floor being one that deserves special attention,” explains Paulo Rocha, Granorte. “Leather’s reputation as a luxurious material has always been strong, but traditionally it has been quite a challenge to translate this into a practical floor covering. With Corium we’ve managed to achieve this, using the natural aesthetic and premium quality of leather with all the practical benefits of modern engineered cork flooring.” Backed by a 10-year residential and five-year commercial warranty, Corium only uses FSC certified timber products and achieves Greenguard indoor air quality certification. Consumer charm offensive

Targeting homeowners across the UK, Crown Floors has begun a consumer PR campaign that will see its carpets grace home interest magazines, national newspaper supplements, websites and blogs.

With the aim of driving carpet purchasers to Crown Floors stockists throughout the country, the PR campaign will use lifestyle photography, product and expert opinion to increase awareness of the brand. “Consumer PR is a proven way to generate footfall to store, promoting the Crown Floors brand to an interested audience,” explains Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Crown Floors. “Through home interest media, whether in print or online, we can drive homeowners to the Crown Floors website where they will be able to find their ideal carpet and their closest retailer. Editorial appearances such as those we are aiming for throughout the campaign are invaluable in establishing the brand among consumers.” Working with a leading interiors PR agency, Crown Floors is launching the campaign as a further method of support for its dealer network. Alongside marketing materials, striking point of sale and the Crown Floors Loyalty Club incentive scheme, the campaign affirms the brand’s commitment to providing flooring retailers with the very best support package. “We are striving to ensure that Crown Floors becomes a household name in carpet and beginning this consumer PR campaign to highlight our stunning carpet collections represents another milestone in achieving this goal,” concludes Geert Vanden Bossche. Ecological innovation

wineo includes the word “neo”, meaning new. But also the syllable Wi: this shows the entrepreneurial competence behind wineo, which stands for over three decades of experience. Ulrich Windmöller founded the company Witex in 1978, thus giving the starting signal for numerous innovations. For instance, Witex was the first producer in Germany to introduce high quality laminate floors to the market in 1991.

Elastic design floorings were added under the umbrella of Windmöller Flooring in 2007, which since 2009 has also been available as a click-in system for adhesive-free installation under the name DESIGNline Connect: They were also the first supplier to introduce these and have been the market leader in this segment ever since. With their latest baby, Purline eco – the first ecological polyurethane floor, which is mainly composed of renewable raw materials – they have launched another world first on the market. And wineo are not stopping from improving. Even today they are constantly working on their quality products and developing them further. In the meantime wineo’s floor coverings are among the top choice and are in demand well beyond the borders of Europe, perhaps it’s because of the guarantee promise. T 0114 2870355

Lano let’s twist again

Lano Carpets has revealed a fresh point-of-sale identity and new on-trend shades for its popular Heathertwist collection.

In both 40oz Supreme and 50oz Elite qualities, Heathertwist is part of the Easy Care Premium collection that brings the performance of 100% Lanoset two-ply yarn to provide better appearance retention and stain resistance. Bleach cleanable and with a 10-year stain warranty, Heathertwist is perfect for today’s consumer: “A long running and hugely successful collection for Lano Carpets, Heathertwist has become an important carpet for many retailers as its combination of natural shades and worry-free living appeal to the modern consumer,” explains Tom Matthys, sales manager UK and Ireland, Lano Carpets. “Many consumers simply don’t have the time for the specialist stain removal methods required by natural fibres, nor do they want the worry, and so Heathertwist provides an ideal alternative.” In 14 multi-tonal natural shades that have been tweaked in line with the latest trends and in both four and five-metre widths, the carpet can be used throughout the home with minimal wastage and fewer seams. Helping to maintain the luxurious feel offered by two premium weights, these contribute to making Heathertwist part of the Easy Care Premium collection. “It is important that the modern generation of stain resistant carpets offer an equivalent alternative to natural carpets in terms of feel and quality, as well as excellent value,” continues Tom. “Our Easy Care Premium collection makes this so, blending the value and performance of our two-ply Lanoset fibre with the feeling of luxury and comfort offered by heavy weight carpets.” T 00800 5266 5266

Transportation inspiration

Improving service for its customers is a continual ambition of UK Flooring Direct and the addition of Inspiration Packs to safely transport samples from the online retailer is the latest evidence of this.

Providing additional protection for up to three samples, the Inspiration Packs ensures that wood, laminate, cork and vinyl flooring from the supplier arrives to customers in perfect condition, free of accidental knocks and marks that can happen at any stage in the postal process. Each pack also contains a list of recommended accessories, a guide to choosing the right flooring and come with a free specialist consultation; in short everything the customer needs to make the right flooring choice. “We are always looking for ways to improve our service and to make our customers feel that they are being given the very best in customer service,” comments Josh Ashby, commercial director, UK Flooring Direct. “The new Inspiration Packs are a way to provide our customers with a personal touch, while also ensuring they have everything they need to get the right flooring for their home.” The Inspiration Packs are already being sent to customers across the UK and the feedback has been excellent. Despatched in just 48 hours and in a new direction for the retailer, the Inspiration Packs are subject to a nominal charge that is refunded upon order. “The previous sample service was hugely cost intensive, difficult to manage and meant that serious customers were mixed with browsers that may not be quite ready to make their purchase,” continues Josh. “By employing a nominal refundable charge and improving the content of our Inspiration Packs, we are better serving customers further down the purchasing process and those at the early stage of research know the small outlay will be refunded to them should they order from UK Flooring Direct.” T 0844 327 0000 www.ukflooringdirect.co.uk 36 June 2014

Feature: Vizifloor

In-store selling enters the screen age

Room visualization transforms POS for flooring retailers Customers can see all your ranges ‘installed’ in photos of their own rooms

Vizifloor is an industry wide initiative to provide consumers with an in-store ‘visualisation’ service – allowing retailers to show all their ranges instantly in a range of roomsets and, most importantly, in the customer’s own rooms. The system, which can be accessed on ipads, showroom screens, PC’s, laptops and smartphones overcomes the sales obstacle of customers who comment: “I can’t imagine what this sample would really look like in my lounge.’ It helps them make decisions about colours, patterns, stripe direction and encourages them to be more courageous in selecting higher value products.

“This is breakthrough technology for the flooring industry,” says David Spragg of Mayville, “but customer’s expectations are already ahead of us. People are used to seeing their kitchens and now their sofas and furniture visualized on screen.

Vizifloor has been created by Mayville Publishing, the company that brings you The Stocklists magazine every month, working with Visualise-It – a leading technology company that has created systems for B&Q, Topps Tiles and US flooring companies.

“This will be a game changer for many retailers. Consumers will get to know which savvy retailers have the system and who hasn’t - and there will be a strong referral element as consumers talk to their friends about how they bought their new carpet.”

“Vizifloor is an industry wide initiative to provide consumers with an in-store ‘visualisation’ service.”

HOW IT WORKS

“Flooring is even more important to show this way as we all know how hesitant consumers can be in selecting products and if they can’t visualize your samples on their floor, they are going to play safe and pay less,” said David. The Stocklists has stepped into this role given its well established links across the trade as the new initiative needs to be an industry-wide collaboration, with as many suppliers and retailers involved as possible to make the system viable and cost-effective. A pilot system has already been developed and Mayville will spend the next few months canvassing support from both sides of the business. If the response is strong enough, the intention is to launch the system later in 2015. Pricing will depend on the level of response across the trade but it is hoped that the retailer system will be less than £50 per month. Early adopters will pay less. The display options for retailers are inexpensive, often using existing tablets and PC’s but even a large screen display costs less than £400 now if retailers want to make a real impact. “This will be a game changer for many retailers,” says David. “Consumers will get to know which savvy retailers have the system and who hasn’t - and there will be a strong referral element as consumers talk to their friends about how they bought their new carpet. It’s all ideal for the facebook and twitter generation,” he said. Vizifloor was launched at the Buying Group National Flooring Show in Solihull last month. T 01845 576101 www.vizifloor.com

Vizifloor is online but accessible only through retailer passwords. Any device that can pick up the internet can be used and some retailers may prefer iPads to talk to a customer alongside a conventional sample book or lectern (in-store or at home) while others may encourage store vistors to look through samples on a large screen in-store, hooked up to their laptop or PC. The system is pre-loaded with samples and the retailer can select which suppliers he wants to show on his system, including buying group own ranges. There is a selection of typical domestic roomsets covering the various household locations and customers can pick one that looks like their home and see all the flooring instantly installed. The direction of patterns, stripes and planks can be changed at the touch of a button. The ‘own room’ function is the best bit. A customer can pick some samples and be sent home to take a photo of their own room in which the installation is planned. Then they send it back to the retailer by upload or email. The retailer does a quick trace using an easy online tool and then is ready to show the selected samples to the customer – inviting them to re-visit the store, or making a home visit with the images or keeping in touch online. The system stores each customers contact information and the samples they are interested in.

WORKING FOR YOU Be a tech savvy retailer and save money! Retailers who register their interest now will save 15% on the final price of the system. If you register, there will be NO OBLIGATION to take the system when it is launched. When you register, we’ll keep you up to date with our progress and offer you the chance to be the first in your area to have Vizifloor. Now providing a growing number of Master Installers with the benefits of complete support from Quick-Step including a two-year warranty on all installation work, as well as providing foundation skills for those entering the industry, the Quick-Step Academy trains, tests and certifies to the very highest standards. Successful Master Installers – it is a strictly enforced pass or fail course – can access a huge range of benefits including:

Independent future for Metro

Members of the Metro Group have opted for continued independence after proposals for an alliance with the Flooring One (AIS) buying group were voted down at an annual general meeting last month.

“The proposals had been shared and discussed with members over the previous six months,” said Metro chairman Martin Harvey. “ The AGM was held in a professional and business-like manner and the membership clearly indicated their preference for the future of the group. “Therefore the new board comprising of Paul Ivory, John Keyworth, Peter Lynas and myself will be working to reform the group in line with that independent vision,” he said. Metro have thanked Flooring One for their input into exploring the opportunities that an alliance between the two organisations might have delivered. “I look forward to working with you to deliver a profitable and progressive year for all group members and suppliers as we move the Metro Group forward,” said Mr Harvey in a statement to suppliers.

• Listed as a certified installer on www.quick-step.co.uk • Technical advice line • Offers customers a free two-year warranty on installation work • Carry the prestige of the Master Installer identity card • Work towards an NVQ qualification • Advance to become a TrustMark scheme member • Clothing, van stickers and other marketing support Qualified Master Installers have reported an uptake in work and improved customer satisfaction as major benefits of the scheme. With the number of Master Installers across the UK growing on a weekly basis it appears that the message is spreading fast too: “Since we opened the Academy for Excellence in Flooring it has become regarded as the premier training facility in the UK for those installers looking to improve their wood, laminate and LVT skills,” comments Darren Robinson, training development and learning manager. “As more installers realise the benefits of bearing the Master Installer badge, the academy is busier than ever and this is testament that our initial ambition to improve standards in the industry is really beginning to take shape.” www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Harrogate surges ahead

National Flooring Show organisers have given an upbeat progress report. Paul Stott said: “Sales growth for the show is very pleasing. With over four months still to run, firmly contracted exhibition space already exceeds the 2013 show total. New enquiries are coming through on a daily basis, and a number of the halls are now full, or virtually full.”

Master Weaver makes a welcome return to the show, and other strong brands recently booking include Bembe, Callavi, Ardex UK, Merryfield, Karpet King, Fair Packaging, Earthwerks, Ambassador Antalis Packaging, Carpet Gripper Direct, Serdim Hali,Tuplex, CPS Labels and Quick Step Academy. Another interesting feature is the strong showing by Chinese companies. A handful exhibited in 2013, and all enjoyed the show, the business opportunities, and the Harrogate experience. All have booked to return for 2014, along with a number of fellow Chinese flooring companies offering a range of products. The Curtis Wool Direct feature area It is the first time the wool merchant and early stage processors have taken space at the event, and their presence will be a surprise to many in the flooring industry as they do not sell yarn or carpets. Martin Curtis explained: “The Flooring Show is the most important event in the United Kingdom carpet industry’s calendar and we will be able to show manufacturers, retailers, interior designers, architects and other visitors exactly what wool is, how it is processed and why it is such an environmentally friendly product.” Expert knowledge from ENco, the environmental consultants and Haworth Scouring and Haworth Combing Companies will be complemented by experienced wool traders. The Flooring Show Seminar Programme The details of the Seminar Programme are still taking shape, and will be published soon. The programme will focus on the key day-to-day issues affecting flooring retailers and contract and commercial flooring businesses. Booked already is Yorkshireman Carl Hopkins; Carl is a successful businessman and one of the small group of Channel 4’s ‘Secret Millionaires’. Carl will be speaking on the opening day on ‘10 ways to improve your company’, with specific relevance to flooring. The programme will also feature David Abbott, who once again will be enabling people to take their business online following his very well received session in 2013; and John Collinson - one of the country’s leading energy consultants. The Demo Zones Note the ‘s’ on the above! This year there will be two Demo Zones running across all three days of the show. Doubling up on this ever-popular feature will allow a much greater range of installation issues to be covered, for the benefit of professionals across all sectors of the industry. Zone 1 will focus on subfloor and tools, and feature subjects such as moisture measurement and equipment; DPMs and fast track DPMs; repair mortars; plywood templating; joints and other repairs; smoothing compounds; specialist subfloor preparation, and much more. Zone 2 will concentrate on floor finishes, and cover underlay installation; carpet stretch-fit installation including stairs and bullnose; carpet joins; domestic vinyl flooring; commercial resilient flooring installation; cap and cove including welding; luxury vinyl tile insulation, and other topics. Visiting the show Registration for the show – free, quick and easy – is available online at www.theflooringshow.com, and a steady stream of industry professionals are already registering early; as always, the organisers have arranged for a number of rooms to be reserved for Flooring Show participants at excellent rates, and details of these can be found at the show website.

Stirling achievement

The Stirling Ward assesses and provides timely and holistic care to patients to help them live better with frailty and continue their lives. To uplift the interior environment, over 700m2 of Polysafe Hydro Evolve in the Amazon shade and Polysafe Modena PUR in Gypsum was installed throughout circulation areas, WC areas and bedrooms by Unlimited Flooring of Stocksbridge. The flooring chosen was used to enhance the design of the clutter-free and bright dementiafriendly environment, whilst also providing the required sustainable slip-resistance for patients and staff at all times. Polysafe Hydro Evolve and Polysafe Modena PUR have provided the required design, safety and durability for this specialist dementiafriendly environment.” Polysafe Hydro Evolve is ideal for continually wet/barefoot areas within commercial and recreational settings such as walk-in showers and indoor pool surrounds. Looming success

The Living Looms charity, created to conserve threatened carpet looms and conserve the skills and knowledge to produce quality carpet has scored a major success.

The looms are set to live again with two new commissions - to weave the Felbrigg Library carpet and the Sun King Sultana design. Following the rescue of eleven unique Axminster carpet looms and the subsequent weaving of a special quality carpet in 2008, the charity is now focused on the creation of a heritage carpet weaving workshop and textile resource centre in a derelict Victorian carpet factory in Kidderminster. www.thelivinglooms.com

The British Wool column Wool Trend Inspirations - new wool focus for The Flooring Show British Wool and The Campaign for Wool have announced a major promotion for wool at this year’s Flooring Show. The British Wool Marketing Board markets the majority of British grown wool and is a major funder of the Campaign for Wool, an organisation which focuses on inspiring greater use of real wool and particularly on promoting wool to consumers.

The Wool Trend Inspirations area in Hall C will be centred around a stunning, professionally styled feature installation showing wool carpet and furnishings trends in 2014/15. The installation, an initiative that has been developed in association with Homes & Gardens magazine, one of the UK’s best read design publications reaching hundreds of thousands of consumers every month. “We have joined forces with Homes & Gardens to build a really strong statement for wool flooring within the home and as a design solution for interiors,” Bridgette Kelly of the Campaign for Wool explained. “This publication sells more from the news shelf than any other similar publication and appeals to the consumer that’s interested in quality and style.” Wool Trend Inspirations will be supported by the industry’s leading wool manufacturers and will make wool carpet a strong presence at The Flooring Show again. “It is very clear to us that the team at The Flooring Show have put immense energy in to making this event interesting and successful for our industry. We want to ensure that we support that commitment and bring something bold and vibrant to support our partners in the carpet sector and also help to provide a product platform for quality manufacturers to participate.”

Homes & Garden headline event for seminar

Additionally the BWMB and the Campaign for Wool will introduce a daily focus on wool within the Flooring Show’s popular seminar programme. The editor of Homes & Gardens and his team will attend the show to talk about the trends for wool and key influencing factors of consumer choices in the coming season. Homes & Gardens is a recognised authority on design trends and has recently completed extensive research on how consumers shop and make decisions on interior furnishings, which will be reported on at the event by the Executive Editor.

British Wool host Wool Education Hub

British Wool will run a new Wool Education Hub throughout the show and will launch a new range of POS with literature on the whole wool chain and easy references for retailers to use with consumers. “We will provide new tools for the retail trade to support the wool product in store. There is a digitally supported education programme in development and this will give wool flooring retailers excellent materials to help them promote the fibre,” Tim Booth, marketing manager of the BWMB said. “British Wool is a very strong fibre in carpet and our ambition is to ensure that every retailer visiting our stand leaves the show with the right materials to help them promote the fibre.”

MARKET COMMENTARY

Soft and grey Solihull sets the tone for the selling season Solihull is a smart, serious kind of show with a highly professional, business-like approach that sets the agenda for the selling season ahead. And reading the mood of the market at the event the conclusion is that market has gone soft and grey. The good news is that that is what consumers want. Soft in two senses. Carpet is having a good run with softness and recent advances in yarn technology mean that consumers no longer have to sacrifice performance to get it. Soft is the new stripe in the sense that the industry has found a fresh sector to get behind which consumers are keen to hear about. But also soft in the sense that manufacturers are being cautious in their approach to product development. The recovery isn’t quite what we were all hoping it might be. By now, we wondered if we’d be fighting off the customers who were flocking back to flooring with all that pent-up demand we heard about. In reality, most suppliers report a slow steady growth since the start of the year which came to a shuddering halt in the extended Easter holidays but now shows signs of resuming its shallow upward trend. Encouraging comments came through that the signs of growth that have been apparent in the South East have now escaped beyond the M25 - and if the PPI bonanza is starting to run dry, there’s talk that the pension release scheme just announced will encourage older consumers to blow their would-be annuities on something more tangible for today, like fast cars and flooring! It’s noticeable that more suppliers have a better balanced portfolio

of products after the recession, looking for comprehensive relationships across the range with retailers, rather than chasing ad hoc bits of business. So carpet manufacturers have strong products in both synthetics and wool. There’s some return to the traditional levels of wool sales while polyprop has became noticeably more performance driven versus price – both healthy signs for the retailer’s margin. The hyperactivity that characterized the LVT market as too many supplies chased thin business in the recession has calmed down and new launches are more relevant and less confusing. Wood is also looking more attractive with better offers, keener pricing and some new eye-catching finishes that will genuinely excite consumers. So the product development that has been taking place is more intelligent – our reviews in the following pages (and next month) will show some strong contenders for market share in 2014. And we said soft and grey – well we all know how every range has been recoloured towards greiges and softer greys but that’s OK – consumers like the style. Some grey shades in LVT, laminate and wood look superb too. But grey is creeping across everything else as well, company branding, point-of-sale displays and flooring websites. Beige is beginning to look quite cheerful in comparison!

SHOWTIME IN SOLIHULL Associated Weavers touchy, feely “Touch me”, “Feel me” – that’s AW’s offer of the moment as the Solihull show marked the start of the roll out of their eagerly awaited iSense range of super-soft carpet. It’s an invitation that’s hard to resist and the yarn technology has worked wonders to manufacture high performance carpet that is just so, so soft. On show was the smart new livery of the iSense range – sophisticated POS options that present the two launch collections which split into ‘supersoft” and “soft”. The stars of the show are the super-soft trio of Seduction, Splendour and Serenity which gives options on finish and texture. The soft range trio are Adoration, L’Amour and Illusion which still feel great – but retailers may find trading up easier than they think once customers get their fingers into the pile. “The reaction to this launch really has been refreshing,” says Steve Elliott of AW. “There has been a lot of genuine enthusiasm and retailers are really buying into this range.” T 01422 431100 www.associatedweavers.net

Brockway image and imagination Brockway has gone to the wall with their new marketing – a smart set of displays that cover their core ranges across seven panels. The wall units were prototyped at the end of last year and have been fine tuned following retailer reaction. Lots of strong imagery combines with detailed sample showing the extensive colour range and opportunities for coordination. There’s also a new 27” lectern for stripes that shows off Brockway’s market leading collection. In the product ranges, best-selling Jubilee has four new on-trend colours in the grey/blue spectrum and a key development for the sophisticated Lakeland Herdwick collection is the announcement of a 5m width that will be coming to the market before the Autumn. Finally, the popular Cavendish range will be adding a rib design next month. T 01562 828200 www.brockway.co.uk

Carpenter eye-catching colour Carpenter has the Midas touch in terms of making money for its customers with the launch of their latest mainstream product range – “underlay for modern living” as it says on the tin. Midas is a versatile PU underlay in 8, 10 and 12mm thicknesses which has been priced competitively and packaged for consumers in eye-catching colourful branding that works well at point-of-sale. “We’re having a great run with Midas,” says Helen Rowberry of Carpenter. “Retailers have an underlay product that consumers are interested in with great trade-up potential.” At the top end of the sector, Carpenter’s new Pro-Step heavyweight is a dense 8mm underlay that goes head-to-head with crumb rubber in the commercial sector – with pricing that starts to looks attractive against the increasing cost of rubber. Mastercraft Rugs service with style Mastercraft don’t like making a lot of fuss. They just do what retailers like best –supply rugs that sell well. Easy, isn’t it? The company achieves this success month in, month out, winning awards and growing their business at enviable speed but it’s all because they really care about the family-run company, their level of service and the people they trade with. “People like what we do and we have been putting on a lot of new business,” says Mastercraft’s Robert Dickson, pictured right with a new Mehari design. “The secret is to make absolutely sure that our reliability is second to none even when the volumes get bigger. Growth needs servicing.” So the company has added substantially to its UK stockholding operation with a new warehouse at its base in Nelson, Lancashire, and a major re-development and extension to it’s existing warehouse and offices. Selecting best-sellers in the rugs business comes from rich experience and Mastercraft has established contemporary ranges such as Mehari, Lana and Galleria that retailers can rely on as well as the more traditional designs and superbly successful shaggies such as the chunky Mammoth and best selling Twilight collections. Abingdon Soft & Silky The Soft & Silky Stainfree Saxonies are a major launch for Abingdon in what is becoming a very buoyant sector of the market. “This is a very nice package and one that is going to sell well for retailers,” says Martin Peace of Abingdon. The collection comes in three weights – Soft Whisper at 50oz, Satin Touch at 65oz and Hidden Depths at 80oz in Stainfree polypropylene at 4 and 5m. This approach is part of Abingdon’s “good-better-best” offer, a key factor in giving retailers the opportunity to trade up and this technique has been taken further with this launch with ‘deck board’ POS that gives the consumer side-by-side comparison of the three weights as well as a quick look across the colour palette of 15 colours including some subtle heathers. “This is going to be the one to beat in this sector of the market,” says Martin. “We are really excited by the launch and the reaction we have had.” Nearly 1,000 lecterns for Soft & Silky have already been pre-sold. Abingdon also launched two new keenly priced roll ranges at the show. New Forest is an 80/20 with a fine finish which is speckled and available in six colours including some smart new greys. Distinctive Flooring flexible and friendly Distinctive Flooring is the LVT offering from Abingdon but has been building its own reputation in the marketplace since its launch a little over two years ago. “We have spent a lot of that time listening to what people want – and now we’re in a strong position to give it to them,” says sales manager Mark Bevan. The business has built a dedicated sales team of five specialists and re-organised its ranges into three modules. The premium Lifetile Collection is a quality dryback vinyl which has added contemporary new colours. ‘Classics’, the core range, is now extended to 9 planks and 3 tiles with options for click fitting as well as dryback. And the Easy-Lay Loc and LocDeluxe products which have proved very popular. “This is a very flexible offer across the different levels and has been very popular with buying groups with the opportunity to re-brand a complete LVT package,” says Mark. “We’re finding people like dealing with us maybe a little more than some of the corporate players in this market and we see a lot of growth coming through in the business.” T 01274 655694

SHOWTIME IN SOLIHULL Kingsmead buy the book Kingsmead can be counted on for ideas that capture attention and offer something just a little bit smarter. The company’s new Book of Stripes is just such a concept and the book has a simple plot - consumers like stripes so put them all under one cover so they can’t miss an opportunity to purchase. The Book of Stripes looks like a posh, leather-bound tome which opens out into four cleverly entitled collections – Prologue, Anthology, Manuscript and Epilogue – which covers a range of 22 100% wool options. The book’s author is embossed on the cover as MG Deakins – go figure! Elsewhere on the Kingsmead stand, a rare 3-ply polypropylene was launched as Grandeur which promised performance and appeal with three single colour yarns spun together to give a distinctive random effect – a salt and pepper plus – in six colours and with a dense, well-defined finish. SHOWTIME IN SOLIHULL Hugh Mackay doing a runner Hugh Mackay introduced 10 new Tartans to their collection, which brings the range up to 30 designs. These designs were presented on their smart new Lectern, with many members ordering them at the show. The companys main three product sectors, Wool Twist, Wool Loop and Hasslefree were showcased on three new dedicated tombolas. With space in stores becoming harder to get, these 100 slot tombolas represent an ideal way to get plenty of ranges on display in a very small footprint. Another talking point on the stand was The Hugh Mackay runner collection concept. With the members help and input, this evolved into 10 designs (5 Tartans and 5 animal prints) being offered in 1 metre runner with co-ordinating broadloom to match. The full range should be in store by the end of the summer. T 01429 892 555 www.hughmackay.co.uk

SEBO sucking up to retailers SEBO is the solution for retailers who want to suck up a few extra sales from their store visitors. The professional quality range of vacuum cleaners is sold in a smart way by SEBO – the store buys a demo machine at a heavily discounted rate and uses it to talk to consumers who trust their retailer to know about carpet care. The nice part is that SEBO sort out all the after sales service – fulfilling the order, arranging the delivery and any sales support – while paying the retailer a good commission for the business. “It’s another string to your bow as a retailer,” says SEBO’s Kevin Hockney. “Since we launched the scheme last year, we’ve had an increasing number of retailers come back to us for more, enjoying a regular revenue including selling the bags to their customers which helps them keep in touch.” T 01494 465533 www.sebo.co.uk

Victoria not just another carpet The launch of Royal Victoria sums up this company’s approach of focusing on quality and performance. “We won’t be making the cheapest carpets but we will be making some of the best,” says Shaun Lewis of Victoria. Royal Victoria is an elegant 80/20 tufted velvet in tenth gauge in 18 thoughtful ‘English’ colours. Available in two weights and 4 and 5m, the carpet uses Victoria’s Loc-weave backing, giving the company the confidence to offer a lifetime guarantee against pile reversal. There’s a smart new synthetic carpet on offer as well with Soft Touch First Impressions, a 2-ply polypropylene carpet in 12 colours including plains and stipples, with 4 and 5m widths. Victoria’s technology has created a sharper, better defined finish which is soft but less ‘mushy’ than some alternatives. T 01562 749300 www.victoriacarpets.com

The resurgence of Axminster Carpets goes beyond the reinvigoration of its traditions and quality. This company is leading the way in innovation with a flair for design that’s made the trade sit up and take notice. The stand in Solihull showcased a great example of design capability with the new Royal Borough collection. A smart new Wilton collection, Royal Borough is available in 34 options and blends stunning patterns with a totally modern colour palette. Many of the designs incorporate a clever distressed effect which achieves the perfect combination of vintage and modern – much like Axminster itself! “We’re bringing back pattern in a way that consumers can buy into,” says Axminster’s Penny Curtis. “Our aim is to be original and we have a product pipeline that is going to get noticed. This is just the beginning.” Also on show was another first for Axminster Carpets following the launch in February this year of a beautiful range of personalised children’s rugs in a range of striking modern graphic designs (pictured below). Customisable with names and dates to mark a birth, anniversary, special event or occasion – these top quality Axminster woven rugs are heirlooms of the future. T 01297 32244

Flooring One members’ showcase

Solihull is a step up for Flooring One Flooring One’s highly successful members’ show in Solihull demonstrates just how smart a buying group can be in creating a better business environment for retailers. The priority of giving the members the right products that consumers will want, at the right price, is the main event but the attention to detail is what makes the approach so professional and coherent. The Flooring One members area at the Buying Group National Flooring Show is a showcase of confidence in modern retailing and the event was well attended by members last month. “Our role is make sure retailers have the widest range of reliable options to select what works best for their own business,” says Flooring One head Glenn Harding. “Then we offer the resources to make sure the retailing environment is as positive as possible.”

Flooring One’s positive retail environment

The core product range of best selling carpets is constantly updated to hit the latest trends and notable newcomers included Invincible Quartz, a PP two-tone in 12 colours; Cheswick Deluxe in 16 colours and soft-touch choices plush plain Vivacious, two-tone Caravelli and Freedom Twist. In 100% wool, High Sierra has been updated in two designs in 100% wool and Vancouver now has a boucle texture added to the loop cord; while in 80/20s the ones to watch will be the new Hatton Collection in 20 colours and the likely best-seller of them all, Somerset Plains and Heathers – an 80/10/10 in two weights and 4 and 5m. Away from carpet, Flooring One has made some key changes to its smooths offer with the laminate collection split between the wide range of Parador and a selection of carefully chosen products from German specialist Meister which Interfloor will be stocking for the first time in the UK to deliver a rapid service for Flooring One members. Earthwerks are a new supplier for LVT and their colourful vinyl options were a massive hit when they launched at the Domotex show in January. A new feature for members who win some contract work is the Hi-Performa range of attractive, hard-wearing carpet with eight ranges on offer when the collection is launched later this year. On the shop floor, Flooring One’s attention to detail shows through. The group has finalised a smart new POS ticketing system to present the product benefits of different carpet types to the consumer with clean layouts and snappy icons. The result is colourful and informative and includes a set of attention grabbing ticketing for new ranges and extra colours. A point-of-sale guide on carpet care has been updated and is popular with retailers who can add their own branding to the A5 leaflet. And to show that Flooring One retailers are a step up from your average store, a surprise hit at the show were the mini staircase features that can be built into the wall displays. The units were used just to enhance the display in Solihull but the response was so good that the group are offering to make more models for retailers who want a perfect place to sell stripes!

On course for quality

Award-winning carpet manufacturer Cormar Carpets held its annual Flooring Guild training course to give independent carpet retailers a chance to enhance their sales skills. It also provided basic product knowledge about carpets and how to effectively plan and estimate. This is the sixth year that Cormar has held the event to help retailers train staff that are new to the carpet and flooring trade.

The three-day ‘Selling Quality Carpets’ event, which took place 28 - 30 April, was run by independent industry expert and course tutor Ray Morgan from the Flooring Guild. Held at Cormar’s Brookhouse Mill site, the carpet training course was attended by nine carpet retailers from throughout Britain. One of the delegates on the course – Holly Wilson from Generation Flooring commented: “I would definitely recommend this course to anyone in the carpet industry.” David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets said: “Having run this course for a number of years now, it’s great to know that it is still in demand and that it really does make a difference to those retailers that attend.” The Flooring Guild is a ‘not for profit’ organisation, which was founded in 1999 to raise standards in the flooring industry through training and educational programmes. The organisation aims to provide a formal induction programme to assist people coming into the industry and a skills development programme, to motivate current employees.

As part of Brighton and Hove’s Hijack Children’s Festival, Slovenia’s ProstoRož collective of young architects and designers formed of Maša Cvetko, Ana Grk and Alenka Korenjak, discovered the wishes of the city’s children through the Map of Wishes, a live installation featuring Vorwerk Carpets.

Over the Easter period, Brighton’s Jubilee Square became the focus of the Map of Wishes as 105 square metres of brightly coloured carpet from Vorwerk was used to create a community map of the city, upon which the wishes of children from across the borough were beautifully displayed on balloons. Passers by were encouraged to take part and explore the interactive nature of the installation, committing their wishes to the ever-changing map. “When the Map of Wishes team approached us about the idea we were only too happy to get involved,” comments UK sales director for Vorwerk Carpets, Ian Hammond. “Few manufacturers offer the bright spectrum that we do and so when it came to areas of pink, purple, green and red, we were able to provide the ProstoRož collective with the right carpet for the job and were delighted to be involved in this great live art installation.” Brighton’s Hijack Children’s Festival, which ran from 12th to 21st April, took over venues, libraries and the city’s Jubilee Square with interactive and innovative events created by artists especially for three to 11 year olds. The Map of Wishes is the continuation of the concept originally created by ProstoRož as it explores, examines and opens new possibilities of public space use in accordance with the needs of its inhabitants. Flower on Flooring Hospitable reception for contract carpets With the UK economy continuing to record positive growth and confidence returning to many areas, flooring companies are seeing increasing demand from the hospitality sector. Evidence of this is provided by Adam Carpets, which states that demand for its 4m and 5m width graphics and overtuft carpets, made by its Kidderminster factory, is rising. The company reports that it has retained its ethos of only using the best quality raw materials to produce top quality commercially-rated carpets at competitive prices. Recent installations include a bespoke coloured plaid design installed by Rowland May of Darlington in The Rose and Crown at Romaldkirk and an overtuft design into Bloxwich Golf Club. Adam Carpets had been contacted by Hearnshaws of Walsall, looking for an alternative to a more expensive woven product. Business development manager Tony Cook, says: “We were able to offer our unique overtuft production method and produced a design that met the criteria of the client. The carpet was designed with a woven style motif and in such a way to enable by side matching across the widths.”

Another notable project saw Glasgow¹s Rogano, AA Restaurant of the Year for Scotland 2012/13, commission Lano Flooring Solutions to recreate a carpet originally found on the Queen Mary cruise liner, which was built in the area during the 1930s. The company supplied 150m2 of Glasgow¹s Rogano AA Restaurant 10-row bespoke by Lano Flooring Axminster to provide durability and appearance retention. Hotel manager, Ann Patterson, says: “We turned to Lano Flooring Solutions as it had the design expertise to copy the pattern and provide a new carpet that was hardwearing and long lasting. The whole process was smooth and I would have no hesitation in working with them again.” Using its highly advanced Axminster looms to recreate bespoke carpets such as that installed at the Rogano by McGregor Flooring, the company states its blend of 80% wool, 20% nylon bespoke carpets are used in some of the finest restaurants and hospitality venues in the UK. Ulster Carpets also attests to the increasing popularity of carpets within the hospitality sector as clients become more aware of the endless design possibilities of an axminster carpet.

“We were able to offer our unique overtuft production method and produced a design that met the criteria of the client.” 62 June 2014

Design manager Anthony Hickman, says: “The depth of colour and flexibility of design offered by PSYLO weaving technology means that carpet can be the central feature of an interior scheme. There is also a certain luxury about a wool carpet which is something five star clients are looking for.” One prestigious project was the Tower of London. Working with Historic Royal Palaces, Ulster developed a design for the Yeoman Bar which incorporated symbols representative of each of the countries which make up Great Britain. Another recent installation is the opulent and traditional design in the Lancaster Room at the Savoy Hotel, London, with further examples including the George V, Paris, the Burj al Arab, Dubai and the Wynn Encore, Las Vegas.

Interior design and architecture practice Parker Liddell¹s Jo Parker says a basic plan had been created before manufacturers were invited to create a design as part of the tender process. “Julie Robertson really excelled herself and her design was the best by quite some margin. Julie is an exceptional designer with a keen eye for detail and creativity.”

The final 440m2 installation includes classical Georgian motifs and elegant damask scrolls framed in a multi-tonal stripe in decorative panels, reflecting the ceiling mouldings above, while matching the specified colour combination of on-trend grey and sunflower yellow.

Axminster attracts online

Axminster Carpets has launched its brand new website, alongside its new Royal Borough Wilton range at www.axminster-carpets.co.uk.

A key feature new to the website is an Inspiration section, with moodboards designed to recommend carpet to suit different styles of interior design. The Inspiration page also features trends, with descriptions from Axminster Carpets Design Director, Gary Bridge. The new website offers visitors more freedom to choose samples and better understand the ways in which Axminster Carpets products are made, with pages dedicated to telling the story of Axminster Carpets and explaining the idea of ‘An Axminster From Axminster’. Penny Curtis, Consultant Director of Marketing for Axminster Carpets said: “We know from our research that buying a carpet is one of the most difficult decisions you can make when it comes to decorating your home. The new website has been designed with this in mind, to help people in their buying decision, from choosing colours and weaves to interior design inspiration.” The responsive website – which looks just as good on mobile as it does on computer screens – also carries a newly updated Axminster Carpets logo, matching in a cool, contemporary grey, with the strapline “Beautiful British Design”, encompassing all that Axminster Carpets stands for. A further separate website has also been launched to promote and sell Axminster Carpets’ first children’s range, Imagination Rugs. The website, www.rugsfromaxminster.co.uk, has more information on the inspiration behind Imagination Rugs, as well as stocking the full range of designs, which can be personalised. T 01297 32244

CRUK is green leader

Carpet Recycling UK, the industry-backed association for recycling and reusing waste carpet, has been shortlisted for the BusinessGreen Leaders Awards 2014 in the Waste or Recycling Project of the Year category. The shortlisting recognises CRUK’s success in beating its original target of 25% landfill diversion of waste carpet by 2015 two years early. This target was set in 2008 when the organisation was launched to tackle the 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arising annually in the UK. CRUK is funded by major UK-based carpet manufacturers and distributors who are taking the lead in voluntary producer responsibility.

Engaging the entire flooring sector from the outset and extensive communication to inspire others, such as entrepreneurial organisations, helped CRUK to successfully launch its activities and maintain its upward momentum. CRUK’s next ambitious landfill diversion target is 60% by 2020. Co-founder and Director of Carpet Recycling UK, Laurance Bird commented: “Five short years ago, barely 3% of waste carpet was recycled or reused. Last year, a record-breaking 107,000 tonnes of waste carpet were reused, recycled and recovered in the UK – up 21% (22,000 tonnes) on 2013. This represents a landfill diversion rate of 27% - an amazing achievement given the bulky and ‘challenging’ nature of this waste stream. “It’s a tremendous achievement and one that is reaping environmental and economic benefits all round. While there’s still some way to go, thanks to the committed efforts of all parties involved in our activities, carpet is now regarded as a beneficial resource from which valuable raw materials can be extracted for reuse in a second life. “ Now in their fourth year, the BusinessGreen Leaders Awards celebrate the leading businesses, executives, entrepreneurs, investors and campaigners from across the green economy. Winners will be announced on July 2nd at The Brewery in London. T 0161 440 8325 64 June 2014
