Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 5

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 8

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer.

Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units. www.numa-online.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter

• shedding • pulled loops

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 10

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS June 2015

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

2015 BGNFS stand

“At the time of writing we have just returned from the Buying Group National Flooring Show. Overall, it has been very positive with a good level of attendees viewing some great stands and ranges, presented by many enthusiastic suppliers. The BGNFS is an important exhibition for the industry,” says Phil Hartley, MD at Edel Telenzo. For Telenzo, the show was extra important, as it was the first opportunity to showcase the latest addition to their collection: Diversity. Phil Hartley says: “The reactions to Diversity were very positive. It is a beautiful 3-ply 100% wool loop in eight, two-tone tweed, colour combinations. The woven look-and-feel makes it perfect for consumers looking for that natural feel in a contemporary look.” Diversity is one of the ranges, featured on the new display. The new display is available in two versions, each showing six qualities.“The displays look sharp with beautiful lifestyle images and important messaging on warranties and guarantees. We had a special show offer and are pleased with the number of orders we received during the show.”

Edel Telenzo are adding colours to three of their successful ranges: Barbican, Chelsea and Paddington.

Carpet&FlooringReview Pepper polyprop

The new Avondale range from Crown Floors brings a range of sophisticated and modern neutrals, lifted with a salt and pepper effect to give a more natural appearance. Crafted from 100% extra-strong two-ply polypropylene for better resilience and durability, Avondale is ideal for homes wanting a natural look but with all the benefits of stain-resistant carpet that promises to withstand daily life. Bleach cleanable and available in both four and five-metre widths, Avondale delivers exceptional value with its 1,850g/m2 weight and Heavy Domestic rating. Time for pine

Tuning into the latest trends has always been something of a speciality for Leoline and 2015 is no different with the introduction of the stunning stripped pine look of Cardassian and the weathered painted effect of Azur, both featuring in the Woodmark collection.

These two hot new designs reflect the continued rise of the ‘Scandi’ look for the home, with its weathered and distressed surfaces giving a relaxed vibe that achieves a comfortable lived-in look that is also fresh and bright, thanks to light tones and richly textured surfaces. “These two new additions show that we respond to the latest trends in home interiors and in fact we’ve been keeping an eye on the rising popularity of the Scandi for a long while now, helping us to make sure that Cardassian and Azur really do it justice, while also fitting with the style idiosyncrasies of the UK homeowner,” explains Victoria Hemelaer, product manager, Leoline. Both designs come in three different widths (two, three and four-metre wide) and with a Natural Look & Feel surface for better realism. With the added dirt, stain and scuff protection of Superguard and the underfoot warmth of Compactback, these new designs ensure that Woodmark collection features the very latest in on-trend wood styles. Marble is one of the hottest interior trends right now and Avenue’s new Rappallo design ensures that Avenue stockists across the UK can capitalise on this trend with a stunning recreation packed with the benefits of cushion flooring.

Known for its high price that has made it the territory of high-specification homes, Rappallo is finally making the beauty and intricacy of marble accessible for more, capturing the majesty and elegance of this highly desirable material. In three shades including a neutral, grey and charcoal, Rapallo offers the look of marble in a floor that is resistant to scratches and stains, that provides slip resistance, adds softness and warmth underfoot and comes in three different widths. “Marble is very big in interior design right now so our studio presented a real marble to convert into a new cushion floor,” comments Victoria Hemelaer, product manager, Avenue Floors. “Working with the sales team we decided on the style of the tile, what kind of grout line it should have, the size and colours we should offer. Of course, as always you should choose the most natural colours for the product, but that doesn’t mean you are limited to just one, natural variation means we can create the design in several shades or tones with it still looking real.” The result is a stunning cushion floor design that stands out as being on the edge of contemporary interior design and is now available as part of the Ultimate Elements collection for 2015. Fresh spin on pattern

In three sophisticated designs offering an alternative to the ubiquitous stripe, including an on-trend tonal houndstooth, Jaudon from Lano Carpets brings contemporary patterned carpet to the home.

Beautifully woven on the latest in Wilton looms in a two-tone loop, the carpet is ideal for homeowners looking for a quality carpet that puts a fresh spin on pattern with its pindot, diamond pindot and houndstooth designs.

Hard working heathers

Wonderfully wool-like in appearance, Noble Heathers from Balta Broadloom brings the much desired look of natural carpet with all the benefits of 100% StainSafe fibre, a collection perfectly suited to the demands of busy lives.

In a palette of 10 heather shades, the carpet comes with 10-year wear and 15-year stain warranties, underlining its quality status in the stain-resistant sector and helped in no small part by the two-ply yarn as Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, explains: “By using a quality two-ply yarn on Noble Heathers, we’ve created a carpet that not only gives exquisite definition to the classic heather style, but also a carpet that feels softer to the touch and which has extra resilience and recovery. The use of this yarn places Noble Heathers firmly in the quality end of stain-resistant carpet, yet it still delivers quite exceptional value.”

Jaudon uses Lano’s three-ply yarn to provide exceptional clarity to the modern geometrics available in a selection of mid-tone naturals, modern greys and charcoal. A thoroughly contemporary take on patterned carpet for the home, Jaudon comes in a 80% wool 20% polyamide blend for longevity and long-term appearance retention. As an extra mark of quality, the collection also uses Lano’s three-ply yarn that aids design definition and makes for a more resilient carpet. “There is no doubt that stripe carpets have renewed interest in patterned carpet, but their dominance can be off-putting for some homeowners,” says Birger Karlsson, UK sales director. “Jaudon gives these homeowners a serious option in a premium quality that is often the sector in which these potential buyers can be found.” In a pile weight of 1210g/m2, this woven carpet comes in a width of 3.90m and is suitable for living spaces and bedrooms. T 00800 5266 5266

www.lano.com

The collection is available in both four and five-metre widths to reduce waste or seams and is bleach cleanable, something important to today’s new generations of homeowners: “We are seeing a new generation of homeowners that want quality, but also the reassurance that their new carpet will be capable of withstanding family life without too much fuss and Noble Heathers certainly ticks both boxes,” says Geert. “In a range of timeless heather colours, it is also sure to appeal for its beautiful looks too.” Noble Heathers comes with an ultratex quick+ comfort felt backing for additional underfoot comfort and in a pile weight of 1,050g/m2. Wilton celebrates success

Wilton Carpets Commercial has recently held a country fete and party on its picturesque production site in the Wiltshire countryside to say thank you to its staff and to celebrate a hugely successful 20 years of business.

Two decades ago, in January 1995, the picture was very different when the owners of the factory closed the doors resulting in a loss of over 100 jobs. In April of the same year, the doors of the factory were open once again as a new British company was formed and Wilton Carpets Commercial was born - with a focus on delivering to the hospitality industry beautifully designed axminster and wilton carpet, for which the town of Wilton is famous. Since then, Wilton Carpets Commercial has made carpet for leading venues across the world and is now enjoying a reputation as one of the foremost specialists in axminster, tufted and wilton carpets for hospitality environments. Peter Le Count, managing director, comments: “The factory is busier than it has ever been and it makes us all feel very proud that we are continuing to produce such good quality carpet with outstanding design. We have focused on making carpet for the hospitality and leisure sectors, including hotels, cruise ships and the like. We now have a business working 24 hours a day and our customers are appreciating the design and service Wilton Carpets Commercial brings to them. We are expecting to report record profit levels this year and are investing in new machinery for further growth.” Hosted on the picturesque site on Saturday 11th April, staff enjoyed traditional country fete games, a beer tent, live four-piece band and a delicious hog roast. BBC South Today also reported from the event, keen to show just how the atmosphere had changed since it last gave an account of the closure and loss of over 100 jobs 20 years previously. Some of the staff at Wilton have been with the company since the very beginning and many for 10 years or more, with generations of families also working for the company. Wilton Carpets Commercial remains a local community-focused business with the exceptional loyalty and a desire to succeed from all staff, a major factor in its success. T 01722 746000

Get a better gripper

The extra-wide Diamond Gripper from floorwise delivers superior hold in residential and commercial locations, with an increased number of zinc-coated rust-resistant pins - it aims to be the benchmark in high-quality gripper.

Available in pre-nailed options for concrete, wood and dual-purpose, Diamond Gripper delivers exceptional stability in a wide range of conditions and is made to a far higher standard than many other grippers. “The quality of some gripper leaves a lot to be desired these days and will often prove more hassle than its worth,” says Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise. “With Diamond Gripper we’ve developed a first-rate product that returns to the superiority of carpet gripper of old.” With an increased number of pins across its length, Diamond Gripper ensures excellent stability and gives improved hold once the carpet has been stretched. The extra width of the gripper also helps to reduce accidental damage to walls and skirting when nailing, allowing for speedier installation. “Nowadays, more and more carpet is available in five-metre widths to suit the demands of spacious homes and larger commercial environments, so it is important that gripper is adapted to ensure it performs just as well. The increased number of pins and nails of the Diamond Gripper makes it more suitable for power stretching installations too, so it is the ideal product for any fitter’s toolkit,” concludes Richard. Mastering more business

It appears that word of the Master Installer course is spreading around installers as they turn to social media to sing the praises of being associated with the Quick-Step brand.

Whether thank you photos and installers recommending the Master Installer course to each other, or posts declaring how work has been won through being listed on the Quick-Step website, the consensus is overwhelmingly positive. Being a Quick-Step Master Installer means a brighter business future. Feedback forms given on completion of the course also cite how the three-days of learning provided skills and knowledge to take installers forward in their career, as well as commending trainers on their calm and approachable manner. Installers are already looking to do more courses at the Academy, perhaps choosing the Master Installer course for Livyn luxury vinyl floors to expand the options they can provide customers. “We work hard to make sure that the courses and benefits that come with successful completion are of genuine use to installers so we are delighted that they are spreading the message of all the positive things that come with being a Master Installer,” comments Lee Thompson, technical and procurement manager at the academy. “Being a Master Installer brings several benefits, with an increase in work through the Quick-Step website being just one.” The Academy for Excellence in Flooring runs Quick-Step Master Installer courses for wood, laminate and livyn luxury vinyl, as well as a Foundation course for those just starting out in the industry and the Wood Sanding and Finishing programme. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Ballot blues for first half sales

The sentiment that flooring sales had slowed amid the election uncertainty last month have been confirmed by SCS whose share price plummeted when they reported that April sales were down 16% across their 97 stores.

Especially warm Spring weather was partly to blame the company said but added that uncertainty over the outcome of the general election had “significantly lowered customers’ confidence in committing to big ticket purchases” and it was forced to increase discounts to encourage spending. SCS, whose share price slumped 30% on the news in May said they expected trading to return to normal levels now and across the flooring sector there is optimism that a steady start to the year will now accelerate and that cool weather in May and June may help. Carpetright reported a marked improvement in its prospects, expecting that full year figures ending in May 2015 would show pre-tax profits of £13m – in 2014 it was a third of that at £4.6m. The company, which now has 459 stores talked of a “sustained recovery in UK sales” which were up 9%. Victoria Plc similarly announced that its results are likely to be ahead of market expectations when it reports for the financial year that ended on March 28. The company said the year had started well in terms of sales and cited the recent acquisitions of Abingdon, Whitestone Weavers and Westex as beginning to benefit their profitability.

Aid for Nepal rug workers

T 00 32 5665 3211

GoodWeave has reported that its field team in Nepal has reached 67 weaving factories and 2,091 workers with food and supplies following the set up of the GoodWeave Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund. GoodWeave is also delivering mobile medical aid, working in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme.

Nina Smith, Executive Director of GoodWeave has made an appeal for donations to keep funding its vital work. “The financial donations of our rug industry, here in the West, are vital to deliver crucial aid and support to the impoverished weaving community in Nepal. The Kathmandu Valley was badly hit by the quake and with it the weaving industry of Nepal. “Rug weaving is Nepal’s largest export industry. The UK imports tens of thousands of hand-knotted rugs from Nepal each year. I hope that the long standing trading relationship the West has enjoyed with Nepal translates into financial support at this its time of urgent need,” she said. GoodWeave’s Nepal Program Officer Binita Paudel reports, “When I try to talk to weavers, I feel their painful voices filled with tears. Those who were already under the poverty line, had weak house structure and have little to eat. They have been more affected by the natural disaster.” GoodWeave has an office in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal, from where it runs its child-labour-free rug certification scheme, child rehabilitation centre (Hamro Ghar) and extensive education programmes. Sealing the deal

“Wouldn’t it be great if you could know, just by looking at the bottle, which products are best at cleaning different fibres and are environmentally friendly to boot,” says Steve Bakker, marketing manager, The WoolSafe Organisation, citing the ambition of the organisation for its new CleanSeal and EnviroSeal marks.

Floors for paws

Polyflor’s Polysafe Verona PUR safety flooring was installed to create a new training area with sustainable wet slip resistance for dogs and their handlers at the recently refurbished Guide Dogs for the Blind Training School in Woodford Green, Essex. Around 450m2 of Polysafe Verona PUR sheet vinyl flooring in the vibrant Blue Lagoon 5206 shade was installed in the school’s training and demonstration area to create a safe working area for handlers and dogs when going through their regular training routines.

The flooring’s high design appeal with built-in safety also led to the range being specified and fitted to front of house corridors, stairways and canteen areas at the facility. The Verona range’s virtually invisible slip resistant particles and complementary tonal chips offer the high clarity look of a smooth vinyl floor with the performance of a safety floor. Julie Pithers, Assistant Facilities Manager at The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association commented, “The hard wearing and slip resistant nature of Polysafe Verona makes it ideal for use throughout the Training School as we have regular footfall as well as the paws moving across the floor of course! Our dogs often undertake rigorous routines with their handlers, the floor has coped admirably with this and cleans up very well. We are impressed with the overall look too, it really lifts the environment.” Guaranteed to deliver sustainable wet slip resistance throughout its guaranteed lifetime, the high performance Polysafe Verona range fully adheres to the European Standard for safety flooring EN 13845 and meets all HSE and UK Slip Group Guidelines for slip resistance. Verona achieves 36+ on the Pendulum wet test, has a surface roughness of 20 microns and above and meets the 50,000 cycles abrasion test, ensuring the virtually invisible particles incorporated into the product are sustainable and will provide continued friction over the long term. The Polysafe Verona range is enhanced with Polysafe PUR polyurethane reinforcement which is cross linked and UV cured so it can be easily maintained with a simple cleaning regime. Polysafe Verona flooring also contains recycled content and is 100% recyclable through the Recofloor vinyl take back scheme. T 0161 767 1111 www.polyflor.com

Building on the success of the internationally respected WoolSafe Approved programme The WoolSafe Organisation has recently launched two new certifications: CleanSeal and EnviroSeal. In many ways CleanSeal mirrors the WoolSafe Approved programme but the certification mark will highlight those products that are formulated to perform best on man-made fibres. CleanSeal Approved products will clean carpets and rugs to the highest standards without causing any of the common problems that can arise during or after cleaning such as rapid soiling and texture change from sticky residues, or colour change or colour loss from bleaching agents. Both programmes are the catalyst for relevant products to be independently assessed for their green credentials through EnviroSeal. EnviroSeal helps conscientious carpet manufacturers, retailers and owners to identify cleaning products that will minimise the environmental impact of maintaining the floor covering over the 5, 10 or 15 years of its installation. Of course, effective maintenance using quality products extends the life of the floor covering not only to the benefit of the environment but also the owner’s pockets. Steve Bakker continues, “From the point of view of the carpet manufacturers and retailers, they want the flooring they sell to perform well and look great for a long time, as this ensures that customers not only keep faith in carpets and rugs in general, but remain loyal to their particular brands. “It’s simple really, manufacturers and retailers just need to recommend that certified products are used and the end result is a carpet that is kept looking its best for much longer, without costing the earth.” T 01943 850 817 www.woolsafe.org

Recofloor recognised

Recofloor is a finalist in this year’s National Recycling Awards in the Resource Management Business of the Year category for its sustained achievements in collecting and recycling waste vinyl flooring. Since its foundation in 2009 by leading flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro, the Recofloor take-back scheme has more than trebled its annual collections of vinyl flooring to a record-breaking 500-plus tonnes last year. To date, 2,256 tonnes of vinyl flooring waste has been diverted from landfill through Recofloor and recycled back into new flooring or traffic management products such as cones and sign bases. Benefits for 650-plus collectors across the UK include a sustainable option for end-of-life flooring, enhanced green credentials and up to 75% savings in disposal costs. Recofloor’s Project Manager Jane Gardner said the shortlisting is a terrific acknowledgement of commitment and collaboration across the entire flooring supply chain to ensure the scheme’s on-going success and divert ever-rising volumes of waste vinyl from landfill.

She added: “We’re very proud of how the scheme has grown and thrilled that the efforts of all have been recognised through our finalist placing.” T 0161 355 7618 42 June 2015

Vodafone calls on vinyl

Polyflor’s SimpLay loose lay vinyl floor tiles helped add the finishing touches to a refurbished Vodafone store in Birmingham city centre recently. Suitable for retail and commercial environments, SimpLay tiles and planks have been developed for loose lay installation without the use of adhesive, so they can be fitted quickly with minimal downtime required.

The SimpLay floor tiles were installed by flooring contractors AFB Flooring Solutions of Lancashire, for retail and commercial fit out specialists Audas Project Management who are refurbishing a number of Vodafone stores across the UK. The SimpLay collection of loose lay tiles features eight authentic wood planks designs, six natural stone tile effects and two weave pattern tiles. The Rich Walnut 2504 shade chosen for this Vodafone store perfectly complements the brand’s signature red and white colour scheme. With a 5mm gauge and 0.7mm wear layer, SimpLay loose lay tiles include a unique, non-skid honeycomb backing layer to ensure that the tiles stay in position and glass fibre reinforcement layer to enhance dimensional stability. Quick to install over many different types of floorcovering, individual SimpLay tiles can easily be replaced, relocated and reused, making them ideal for creating temporary installations and exhibition spaces. Martin Rowe, Project Manager at Audas commented, “Polyflor’s SimpLay flooring looks impressive and has the added benefit of being very quick to install. This helped us meet our deadline to handover this project on schedule so this busy Birmingham city centre store could reopen.” SimpLay flooring contains recycled content and is 100% recyclable through the Recofloor vinyl take back scheme. Dining out on Expona

Expona Flow PUR sheet vinyl flooring from Polyflor was chosen by Broad Oak Primary School in Didsbury, Manchester as a hard wearing flooring option that would smarten up their dining area and give years of performance in this high traffic area.

The eye catching Reclaimed Chevron 9830 design from the Expona Flow PUR range was installed by Manchester based Barratt & Hughes flooring contractors in the school’s canteen area. Launched earlier this year, the Expona Flow collection of heavy commercial sheet vinyl flooring features 50 wood, stone and abstract designs in a 2 metre wide sheet format with a 2mm gauge and a 0.7mm wear layer. With an inbuilt herringbone pattern, this Reclaimed Chevron design was chosen to complement the old parquet flooring in the school’s assembly hall, is separated from the dining area by a movable partition to provide open plan or separate spaces. This design offers a reclaimed wood effect with subtle depth and unique detailing that replicates the beauty of natural oak planks. For superior cleaning benefits, Expona Flow flooring is cross linked and cured with Polyflor PUR polyurethane reinforcement for simple polish-free maintenance regime. Simon Peers from Barratt & Hughes commented, “Like Polyflor’s other sheet vinyl products, Expona Flow was easy to install and a quick way to create a statement floor that really adds impact to this room. We often work with schools and those whom I have shown this installation to have been very impressed with these results, I can see these chevron designs being popular choices.” Polysafe Vogue Ultra PUR, a heavy-duty safety flooring with a multi-chip decoration, was also installed by Barratt & Hughes at Broad Oak Primary School. The Steel Blue 4740 shade was used in a corridor leading to the dining room and outdoor playground to provide sustainable wet slip resistance, crucial in areas where water from outside may brought in by frequent footfall. MARKET COMMENTARY

Vote for Flooring The new intake at Westminster has given a boost to the honourable members of buying groups with an upbeat mood in the trade – whatever your political persuasion, an end (for now at least) to uncertainty is good for business. There was an excellent turn out for the general selection in Solihill (sorry, enough election metaphors!) as the Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show increased its footfall among members of affiliated buying groups and the quality of trade stands from some 60 preferred suppliers stepped up another level. Many manufacturers had reported that a decent start to the year’s trading was put on hold during the general election campaign but sentiment was strong that the Summer would now see some acceleration in consumer demand. The timing of this event makes it something of an agenda-setter for the sales season and therefore it’s interesting to monitor trends at the event. Perhaps the clearest signs of things to come centred around wool. While natural fibre is enjoying something of a revival over the last year, it’s clear that improved products in the synthetic sector have won business in the mainstream twist market that is unlikely to return – “wool has lost the middle market,” one leading manufacturer told us.

The Woodpecker presentation from Kenton Floors was the well deserved winner of the Show’s best stand award.

46 June 2015

However, higher end and luxury wool is doing very well and the surprise trend of the moment is the increasing appeal of wool loop with abundant new offers from wool manufacturers across the price points.

“Wool may have lost out in the middle market but the trend of the moment is the increasing appeal of wool loop.” Wool loop ticks lots of boxes for a robust, high performance carpet that has character and the texture that consumers currently seem to appreciate. This construction has been seen as having a Southern bias among consumers but its popularity is spreading North we are told. In synthetics, soft is still a leading sentiment and appears increasingly to be installed downstairs. Greys and more greys continue to dominate re-colourations across all flooring sectors but in carpet an interesting outsider is the selection of Summertime blues that are selling strongly this season and also the popularity of mustard colours in rugs. Other style snapshots from Solihull is that plaids are in the ascendant while stripes are still doing well. The quality market for patterned carpet is having a good run while in rugs, colour is strong but faded vintage is stronger still, while shaggies have maybe gone off the boil finally after a long period of positive sales.

Affordable invincibility Associated Weavers “Soft carpet. Invincible performance.” is the strapline for one of the season’s biggest launches – the Invictus collection from Associated Weavers. And invincible performance is something of a company mission statement after AW’s runaway success with their super-soft iSense nylon fibre technology launched last year which re-defined softness for consumers and has seen strong sales support on the High Street. But new Invictus isn’t nylon, it’s “solution dyed olefin” - or posh polypropylene to you and I. “We have very high hopes for this product,” says Steve Elliott of AW. “It is softer than other polypropylenes on the market and comes in a really smart colour range.” AW’s Jonathan Davies added: “This an exciting launch for us because it has a real wow factor – not just a carpet but a whole new story for the retailer to tell and top quality marketing material to help them tell it. And I think people will be pleasantly surprised by the pricing, “ he said. The Invictus collection is rolling out now with 14 plain colours in two weights called Orion and Sirius and 16 heathers in two weights called Perseus and Pegasus. AW set a high standard for merchandising with iSense and Invictus follows up in style with Maori figures in dramatic monochrome imagery and sophisticated grey wood wall stands and lecterns.

“It has a real wow factor – not just a carpet but a whole new story for the retailer to tell and top quality marketing material to help them tell it.”

iSense is now almost a year old and AW have celebrated with the launch of Hermes, a deep pile Saxony, but the best seller in the range is also the most expensive, Serenity. Two new colours have been added to the range especially for the UK– and if you have run your fingers through Serenity you’ll know why retailers are encouraged to attach the “touch me” labels to their lecterns. Mainstream AW offers haven’t been forgotten amongst the soft success! The new StainAway Tweed - the collection’s first tweed – is selling well since its launch at the end of last year and offers 12 colours in multi width and the consistently popular StainGuard Saxony has six new colours in its range of 12 to keep the offer fresh. Liquid engineering Abingdon Carpets Abingdon is rolling out their remarkable Aqua Pro-Tec technology to UK independent retailers – a unique performance product that goes beyond the easy clean appeal of regular polypropylene. Unveiled at the Harrogate show last September, Abingdon have been re-formulating and perfecting the unique yarn treatment that means liquid stains sit on top of the pile instead of soaking it – making mopping up so easy. It sounds like a great idea but, more importantly, it looks like a great idea when you see a demo, so Abingdon have built in a demonstration pod into its wall units so retailers can show consumers how smart the technology is. “We want consumers to ask for a demo and retailers will love doing it as the unique performance of this carpet is there before their eyes,” says Abingdon’s Martin Peace. “When a consumer has seen Aqua Pro-Tec in action, they don’t want to take a chance on anything else!.” The early sales figures prove this out with Aqua Pro Tec becoming the company’s biggest cut-length range. The technology is first offered in the Stainfree Classic Collection – three twist ranges Decor, Classic and Supreme at different weights available in 20 colours and multi-width.

“When a consumer has seen Aqua Pro Tec in action, they don’t want to take a chance on anything else!” The specially branded wall units also have a neat video unit that shows Aqua Pro-Tec in action – but the unit only switches on when customers approach the stand, ensuring retailers aren’t bombarded by endless video commentaries in those frustrating periods between visitors! Meanwhile the mainstream Abingdon offer has been extended with Arena Plus, an entry-level polypropylene twist which Martin says is “the keenest priced cut length product we have ever launched”. A new yarn system delivers a cleverly engineered fibre that’s highly competitive but has a good finish in 12 on-trend colours in the Arena Plus range which is available at 4 and 5m in cuts and rolls. From the same fibre and colourbank, Abingdon are also offering heavier weights with Roma at 50oz and Athenia at 65oz also in 4 and 5m and the ranges were well received by show visitors. Unconstrained choice Mastercraft Rugs “People like choice” says Robert Dickson of Mastercraft and he doesn’t disappoint. Mastercraft rugs are already a market leader but the company has invested enthusiastically in new warehousing capacity at the end of last year that allows their buyers to select an even wider range of options. The benefits of the bigger capacity are starting to be seen this season. “We are known for our wide range but there was a constraint in what we could offer and now we have a bigger choice in the most popular collections,” says Robert. A good example is the best selling Mehari range where Mastercraft is now able to add bordered options. In fact the Mehari range has doubled in size for 2015 and the equally popular Galleria collection has increased from 24 to 36 options.

Capri with chenille cotton

Other niche ranges are doing well. A distinctive polypropylene flatweave called Brighton has seen “phenomenal demand” due to its quality feel at a competitive price and the popular style for vintage faded designs is beautifully reflected in the new Capri collection, a cotton chenille in five sizes. Wool on the wall Kingsmead Carpets Kingsmead is in the forefront of the revival of the wool market and most especially with wool loop which is one of the season’s success stories. Their new 100% wool Berber Loop is a great example with a something-foreveryone selection across 3 designs with a level loop, a more rugged hobnail and a closely textured pattern. It’s available in 4 & 5m widths. And Kingsmead are out to catch the eye with the roll out of their smart new modular wall units which have a narrow footprint but are packed with sampling and graphics – 11 units in the wool livery for loop and twist and six for the polypropylene cleaneasy collections. The easyclean Fabulous range is set to do well with its two-tone twist and Saxony combination in 4 & 5m. The 2-ply yarn comes in three weights and has a life-time stain resist warranty. Rolling out the brand Carpenter Carpenter has been in the business of brand building for the last year and the benefits are coming through with increasing strength for the UK manufacturer of PU underlay. “We’ve established ourselves as a major player in the PU market and that recognition has seen strong sales across the product range,” says Carpenter MD Ian Leicaster (pictured right with Helen Rowberry and Pete Poesta). “And we’re working hard to keep the offer fresh and interesting to give retailers what they need.” The company has completed its comprehensive and competitively priced portfolio of products in a colourful new livery with modern graphic designs that are seen on the samples and, with considerable impact, on the fleet of articulated trailers that roll out across the UK. Positively pro-active Furlong Flooring Furlong Flooring have built a reputation as one of the most professionally pro-active players in the flooring sector and every appearance at trade shows sets a standard for the mainstream market. Best-selling carpet offers such as Opulence, Satisfaction and Cabaret start the sales season with a makeover across the colour range and the launch of a superb breadth of options in the Carefree Prestige Collection under the Trident brand give consumers more choice in three ranges – Heathers, Highlights and Pastelle. The smart presentation in Solihull also showcased the Natural Solutions wood range, a new laminates offer and the Design Elements cushionfloor collection to secure Furlong’s status as a one-stop supplier to retailers. Design with distinction Edel Telenzo Distinctive Diversity is exactly the kind of savvy style that customers can count on from Edel Telenzo who have an enviable reputation for the higher quality wool ranges. “It’s a typical Telenzo product,” says MD Phil Hartley. “It’s different and distinctive with a great appearance that will still look as good in five or ten years time.” The carpet is 100% 3-ply Scotchgarded wool in eight two-tone colourways with a tweed effect and the texture that’s so popular in the market at the moment. The woven look is unusually non-directional and it’s available in 4 and 5m. For those of you that like Edel Telenzo’s take on stripes, Diversity also has three striped options. The company also says it is “moving POS up a level” with innovative new units taking six ranges each, accompanied by strong aspirational imagery, which are available in limited numbers from this month. The quietest ones are the best SEBO SEBO were set a challenge when EU regulations limited power consumption of household appliances to below 1600W last year but they’ve responded with quiet confidence as you would expect – very quiet, in fact. On show at Solihull was the new E3 Premium 700W cylinder vacuum cleaner with a 175W powered head that is not only more powerful than its predecessors but makes much less noise too. Re-engineering and technology advances have made this achievement possible and the E-range of SEBO appliances is increasingly recommended by carpet manufacturers. For retailers, the SEBO solution is a good one with the company fulfilling orders direct and handling the after-sales follow-up once retailers have made a sale from their in-store demonstration machine. Recycling returns value to retailers Carpet Recycling UK Carpet Recycling UK highlighted the economic and environmental value to retailers of recycling their uplifted carpets and installation off-cuts at the Solihull show. Baling uplifted carpets reduces the costs of logistics associated with sending these bulky materials for recycling and saves money on landfilling them. Recycling off-cuts, which have higher potential value, works out at less than half the cost of landfill. CRUK member Kenburn was also present to give hands-on baler advice to retailers. “Installation off-cuts can be converted into other textile-based products like carpet underlay, particularly if they are wool-based. Wool is a good fibre for use in felt carpet underlays, thanks to its resilience and insulation properties,” explained Laurance Bird, Director of the industry-backed association for recycling and reusing waste carpet (pictured right). “Plus, of course, there is the intrinsic environmental PR value that can be promoted to your customers by demonstrating your commitment to recycling carpet,” he pointed out. “These are exciting times and we are making significant progress with retailers whom we can advise on the best recycling options for their businesses,” added Laurance. Around 400,000 tonnes of carpet waste arises each year in the UK, of which 113,000 tonnes were reused, recycled or recovered for energy in 2014; representing a landfill diversion rate of 28%. CRUK’s target is 60% diversion from landfill by 2020. The CRUK Annual Conference is on June 11th. T 0161 440 8325 from The Stocklists

The rush to crush Kenburn ACG Group member Cullingford Carpets based in Wincanton Somerset are one of the latest flooring companies to take delivery of a Kenburn “carpet crusher” for recycling their carpet and underlay waste. Cullingford Carpets director Stewart Cullingford comments, “Reducing our waste management costs was of course a consideration but our decision to install a ‘carpet crusher’ was primarily to enable us to have a zero waste to landfill policy and diverting hundreds of tonnes a year of recyclable carpet/underlay waste from landfill makes environmental sense. Simon Wells from Kenburn adds: “Since the launch of the ‘carpet crusher’ at the Flooring Show in Harrogate last year it’s become apparent to us that the flooring industry in particular are extremely keen to divert their recyclable waste from landfill and in doing so reducing their ever increasing skip costs at the same time is an added bonus. Tracking the trends Flooring One Flooring One has the buzz of a well-organised buying group that combines efficiency and enthusiasm at its showcase members meeting in Solihull each May. “We’re here to enhance business opportunities for retailers and take the guesswork out of their purchase decisions,” says Flooring One head Glenn Harding. “We can see emerging trends right across the retail sector and respond to them to make sure our members have the right offer in the store at the right time.” Working with some 40 preferred suppliers, the buyers at Flooring One are constantly monitoring new product introductions to select those that will produce the best returns for members. So the Flooring One members area at this year’s Solihull show was alive with new launches in on-trend sectors such as super-soft synthetics, textures and wool loops, as well as reflecting new colour fashions in the mainstream ranges. Look out for a superb new wool package that Flooring One is developing. The Seville Collection - a superb set of stripes and with coordinated plains of diverse designs that will offer 40 options on one lectern unit. Stripes are still selling strongly and Madagascar Stripes has added seven new colours to make a set of 17 in a dense 100% wool loop weave, while the popular Weston Stripes has been re-coloured. The taste for textures is taken on by new Rushmoor Naturals, a 50/50 wool carpet with polyester which comes in three designs; a level loop cord, a textured weave design and co-ordinating stripes in the latest neutral shades.

“We’re here to enhance business opportunities for retailers and take the guesswork out of their purchase decisions” In plaids, the new Royal Ascot range received a great reaction from members in its ten tasteful colours and sophisticated designs with the neutrals made from 100% wool and the stronger colours as 80/20. New synthetic selections include Cotswold Neutrals – a go-anywhere polypropylene range in 12 heathered shades; lustrous Sudbury Deluxe with some bolder colour choices among its 12 options and Sanctuary with an attractive pepperpot design. The star of the show for Flooring One in this sector is Soft Embrace, an exclusive range of UK colours based on the stunningly successful super-soft iSense fibre. Flooring One’s popular rug catalogue has been updated to pick the season’s best sellers as a professional buying guide for retailers who may be less experienced in knowing what this fast moving market wants and in the smooths sector, the introduction of the top quality Meister laminates from Interfloor last year has increased the range of the offer. Finally, a new idea for members is the opportunity to re-brand existing lecterns they have already from the group’s preferred suppliers with Flooring One livery to create an own-label approach without having to replace hardware. “We’re always looking for creative ways to protect our member margins,” says Glenn. A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

You can walk on wool, all day, every day, week in, week out, year after year and it will spring back and look beautiful - what a brilliant investment for the home!

The Natural Side Effects of Wool There is a lot going on at the moment, new products are everywhere, it is the season for product introductions after all and it is important that we acknowledge the advance of technology and new product development.

The journey that these innovations make is always intriguing during Wool House, our interiors event in 2013 - we were introduced to a chair that had been made using a plastic substance combined with British Wool. The designer had merely wanted to add visual texture to the flat structure but interestingly gained a gentle warmth as an added natural benefit of the fibre. A warmer, softer plastic chair - not hard and cold. Added values in products are often unintentional and sadly largely overlooked. But not in every industry. If you look at pharmaceuticals, if a drug created for one problem proves good at another, it is often re-marketed as a solution when perhaps it first appeared as a side-effect.

Beautiful British Wool Carpet of the Month

Glen Shee is the first product to be launched as part of Kingsmead Carpets’ flagship Highland Fleece range and is 100% British made. Kingsmead Carpets, established over 40 years ago has a heritage linking back to the Ayrshire town of New Cumnock and so this range is an appropriate link in to the origin of the brand name. The wool, specially selected from Scottish breeds in the Highlands has been spun into a yarn that produces a superior quality carpet; the springiness of the wool provides resilience and enables it to maintain its luxury handle and appearance for a long time. Additionally, the shorn fleeces are certifified under the Platinum Certification by the British Wool Marketing Board which traces and confirms that the wool is sourced entirely from Scotland. Available in twenty colours and at very reasonable prices, Glen Shee represents one of the best value quality twists on the market.

Wool is full of good ‘Side Effects’ after all it started off as a warm coat for a sheep and has proved to be equally great as many other things including as carpet!

But the amazing benefits of wool far outstrip anything that could ever be considered a side-effect. In reality they add such value that wool is almost intelligent in its performance. All these benefits are devolved from the sheep but never once do they relent during its entire lifecycle - sheep to carpet.

The strength and bounce-back of wool - which maintains the beauty and appearance of wool in carpet - has a longevity that is unequalled. Of course we know that oil-based products can last - but appearance is really critical because a carpet needs to look and feel good that is what customers want. Bleach with all its chemicals unfortunately does not cure flat and matted carpets that look old before their time.

Wool - as our ‘British Wool Carpet of the Month’ explains, has a natural robust strength. This strength is about the biological composition combined with the breed, the temperature and the weather conditions.

Yes, you read it here... strength and appearance retention grows! Isn’t that fantastic? Did that emerge as a side-effect? Almost certainly! But those added values have been proved over many years, centuries actually. The measure of wool and its multi-purpose capability is to be found throughout history and - strength is top of the list.

You can walk on wool, all day, every day, week in, week out, year after year and it will spring back and look beautiful - what a fantastic side-effect and what a brilliant investment for the home!

from The Stocklists

and why we like it...

We love the name of this range! It is inspired - Glenn Shee from Highland Fleece wool - suggests strength and battle-worthy credentials! As Kingsmead Carpets have rightly highlighted; this is very strong wool, Scottish sheep are made of stern stuff and the wool is a tribute to the tough life they lead. To call it robust wool is perhaps an understatement here! Proof is everything - we have put this on the floor at one of our events and watched it take 8000 people’s worth of punishment and seen how fantastically it performed. Glenn Shee - we applaud you - you are a true warrior in wool twist! June 2015 61

Flower on Flooring Technical skills boost business opportunities With the UK economy improving flooring fitters have the chance to take on more work, but is there enough recognition that improved skill levels can allow installations to be completed at a higher standard and more quickly following expert tuition? Academy for Excellence in Flooring procurement and development manager Lee Thompson, says: “There is absolutely no doubt that training pays dividends in day-to-day business. Large corporations invest heavily in training their staff and they wouldn’t spend the money if it didn’t have a significant impact on their bottom line, so why should it be any different for flooring installers? “Here at the Academy, we are constantly receiving positive feedback on the benefits of being a Master Installer. Many who have been through the course and are listed on the Quick-Step website have reported a significant upturn in work because of the badge they now hold. This is compelling enough, but along with the additional confidence, skills and knowledge gained through three days of intensive training there seems no logical reason not to put yourself through professional training.” The flooring sector is fortunate to have a number of training providers, including the UK Flooring Academy, celebrating its 10th anniversary. Rather than a qualifying body dealing with apprentices, the Flooring Academy offers short courses designed to improve the skills of floor layers. Most of those attending the courses are connected to the trade already, either working for carpet shops and contractors as fitters or in another capacity, such as sales, the organization explains.

While clients often have some experience, the courses are designed to provide the opportunity to try out new tools and installation methods. The UK Flooring academy also delivers bespoke courses to corporate clients across the UK and abroad, recently delivering training to CIMC modular buildings at its headquarters in Guangdong province in China. A number of companies also provide instruction, including the F. Ball and Co Training Centre, opened by Contract Flooring Association CEO Richard Catt in 2010. Almost 2,000 people have attended courses at the centre, acquiring practical skills and formally recognised qualifications. Courses that demonstrate how to avoid the common errors that can lead to floor failures and costly remedial work are held throughout the year, designed for those who are new to the industry or refreshing the skills of more experienced installers.

2015 marks the fifth anniversary of the F.Ball Training Centre

F. Ball also offers courses that support flooring contractors to achieve the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Floorcovering Occupations, assessed through On Site Assessment & Training by an expert from F. Ball's technical department, enabling contractors to qualify for a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card, which is now a mandatory requirement on many building sites. Polyflor also has an established training school in a purpose built facility, delivering high quality training in how to correctly lay its sheet and luxury vinyl tile products. Offering two, three and four day practical installation courses in vinyl flooring, these provide insight into how to lay the perfect floor, the company states, covering everything from preparing sub-floors, conditioning and using the correct adhesives. Delivered by Polyflor’s installation and maintenance specialist, Eddie Pannett, the course includes hands-on exercises and technical theory. “As the UK’s leading commercial vinyl flooring manufacturer, we are well placed to offer guidance and technical expertise,” says Mr Pannett. “These courses are designed to develop and improve the all-round skills of floor layers with varying levels of experience.” When training is correctly applied, Polyflor states there is no end to the creative designs that a flooring contractor can create. Amtico technical training project manager Paul Howells describes the flooring industry as “incredibly dynamic” and says training and professional development “is crucial to keep ahead of the game” to keep pace with developments in design, installation and application. “Having a comprehensive understanding of our product range benefits our retailers with selling techniques as well as supporting our installers to fit our products with complete confidence; something of upmost importance to us,” he says. There is increasing recognition of the need to invest in training with manufacturers, he continues, to keep businesses moving forward. Amtico offers a three day flooring installation course and also an advanced one day version. “Content covers training on interpreting CAD drawings, the latest information in damp proof testing, sub floor preparation and levelling compounds and advice and practical demonstrations on finishing touches such as borders, motifs and complex design floors/laying patterns,” says Mr Howells.

High quality facilities at the Polyfloor Training school

The Flooring Guild senior training consultant Ray Morgan FInstSMM joined a company over 40 years that invested heavily in training and assumed that this was common practice. “How wrong I was,” he says. “I am constantly surprised at how many people have never received any kind of formal training. “In my role as an NVQ assessor most fitters I meet are either self-taught or have been trained by another fitter. Most do a reasonable job but there are some I wouldn’t trust to cut my grass never mind a quality carpet. And there are some whose tool box looks like the remnants of a car boot sale. “Whether you are a salesperson, estimator or fitter there are some great training courses and trade shows where you will see all the latest developments. Who knows, you could be a lot better off as a result!” FloorSkills, training provider partner for the British Wood Flooring Association, runs workshops on subfloor preparation, installation and sand and seal, board replacements and repairs. BWFA membership is not necessary, although members do receive a discount. The Wood Flooring Apprenticeship is a two year course which can be fully funded through the CITB, also providing an additional funding payment to the employer for assistance to pay the apprentice, or used for expenses while they attend the centre. The training is spread over 18 months as block release, on site working for the employer, followed by on site assessment during the final six months. Groups are small to allow one to one tuition where possible, with most of the content taught by Sid Bourne, who wrote the apprenticeship scheme and is well known within the industry. NCCA technical director and IICRC senior carpet inspector Paul Pearce, says the supply and installation of carpet belies consumer aspirations. “The purchaser will want something that feels soft under foot, is light in colour so it goes with everything, will last forever, always look clean and does not stain or mark.” No such item exists, he says, so all the industry can do is support the financial aspect of the consumer’s pocket. “The installer tends to grow with the market demands, but this tends to reduce the amount of expert professional installers in the market place. Carpet installers seem to install what they are supplied with instead of taking extra training to understand the benefits of using the correct underlay or the right technique.” Time pressure frequently sees best practice failing to be followed, he states, but training can help to overcome this and raise installation standards. The WoolSafe Academy describes its Fibre Care Specialist training course as the perfect programme for those competent in fibre maintenance, but looking to become further qualified. Whether completed in person or online, the course acts as an essential reference and resource for those interested in the upkeep of wool carpets and rugs, whether residential or commercial. Teaching on fibre processing and construction is followed by guidance on the actual cleaning process, as well as recommended techniques, products and solutions to common problems that may arise.

from The Stocklists

Training is crucial to keep ahead says Amtico

Once the course has been passed, candidates are invited to become WoolSafe Approved Service Providers, the academy explains. With various technological updates and advances in certification it is important for flooring contractors to remain updated and reliably informed of changes within the flooring industry, to ensure best and safe practice. With all major manufacturers offering comprehensive websites containing key product information as well as technical and safety data sheets there should be no excuse for contractors to remain uninformed. Companies such as Mapei also provide a selection of CPD presentations on many topical issues, with particular reference to sub-floor preparation and how to avoid installation failures. The majority of screed and adhesive manufacturers also provide ongoing training at their state of the art training centres where new and existing products are demonstrated in both practical and classroom based theory. Training centres such as FITA and FloorSkills have qualified technicians and assessors that provide NVQ courses which are not only aimed at new floor layers to the trade but for up skilling floor layers that have been in the trade for a long time. The British Standard codes of practice such as BS:8203 and standards BS:5325 and BS:8204 are useful reference tools available to floor layers that provide sound guidance on subfloor preparation and the installation of resilient and textile floor finishes. Gary Byrne, Resilient Product Manager, Mapei UK, commented: “I believe that if a floor layer wishes to continue developing his/her skills, product knowledge and sub-floor preparation processes, then there is no shortage of valuable and beneficial information available to them. It’s just a case of asking or researching.”
