Carpet&FlooringReview Fascinating facets

A wealth of facets, modern and yet very personal aptly describes the new Fascination, a carpet collection that unites a total of 17 different carpets and roughly 350 colours. The colour schemes for six classics from Vorwerk – including the brightly hued Modena, the expressive Lyrica, or the tried-and-true Parma – have been strikingly optimised. Eight appealing new products and three updates round out the range. Following in-depth research, they pick up on current trends in designs and materials. The new colouring was developed by designer Giulio Ridolfo and the Vorwerk Studio for each carpet so that a given range individually depicts a world of colours all its own. Myrana is silky-matte and iridescent. A high-quality soft & semi-glossy Saxony, Myrana radiates upscale understatement and stands for a new style of luxury. The soft, natural feel is inviting and comfortable, the colour spectrum comprises of 20 hues ranges from delicate to stimulating. It recalls a coolly shaded sky and nature awakening at sunrise: an intensely sunny and gold-toned yellow, nuances of red, a light aqua, as well as the colours found in pearls, water and fog. Myrana is a ‘feel-good’ product that creates a distinct atmosphere in living spaces while accentuating the sensual. T 01282 332 025 www.vorwerk-flooring.co.uk

Skilling up for sales

Cormar Carpets has just completed its eighth annual Flooring Guild training course to give independent carpet retailers a chance to boost their sales skills.

NEWS

Due to popular demand the three-day ‘Selling Quality Carpets’ course was run twice over a two week period, to allow more retailers to attend - 35 carpet retailers, in total, from throughout the UK. Held at Cormar’s Brookhouse Mill site, the carpet training courses were run by independent industry expert and course tutor Ray Morgan from the Flooring Guild. Designed to help retailers train staff new to the carpet and flooring trade, the course provides basic product knowledge about carpets, selling techniques and how to plan and estimate effectively. David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets said: “This year, due to demand, we ran two three-day courses which worked extremely well. We are delighted that we are able to provide this training to the industry and every year we get really good feedback from the carpet retailers that attend. I am sure that the training not only helps them in terms of their sales, but also their overall customer service.” The Flooring Guild is a ‘not for profit’ organisation, which was founded in 1999 to raise standards in the flooring industry through training and educational programmes. The organisation aims to provide a formal induction programme to assist people coming into the industry and a skills development programme, to motivate current employees. T 01204 881234

NEWS Student statement

Amtico’s Signature collection of luxury vinyl tiles has refurbished Marsden House in Leeds, a purpose-built halls of residence for Leeds Beckett University comprising 981 en-suite rooms within a variety of three to six-bedroom flats.

The programme of refurbishment encompassed the conversion of a former on-site health club into a number of student communal areas, including a new gym and games complex, common room with cinema, plus individual study spaces. A dedicated residential laundry room was also revamped, with the complete project incorporating 810m2 of floor area. With the property in use all year round, Marsden House experiences a high level of traffic. As a result, the building required durable and robust flooring that would also enhance the vibrant and striking communal areas. Sheffield-based Self Architects specified Amtico’s Signature collection to ensure each communal area embraced a specific style of statement flooring. This was successfully achieved by blending a range of colours with eyecatching geometric shapes, including a chevron layout in the communal and games areas, along with a chequer board effect in the laundry room. A standout floor design for the project was the complex herringbone scheme in the table tennis areas, where a collection of meticulously structured Cirrus and Napoli floor tiles crept up the walls to create a lively and energetic space. Featuring floorwise’s proprietary UHD+ density, Optima (8mm) and Endura (6.75mm) provide unmatched recovery rates thanks to the very best in materials and construction, promising supreme all-round performance. Helping to combat noise, offering better underfoot comfort, creating warmer rooms and prolonging carpet life, these underlays make perfect sense in a range of commercial environments. Meeting all relevant BS standards, Endura and Optima are stretch and double-stick compatible, with the latter particularly suitable for large commercial and corporate spaces: “Our Optima underlay is not only incredibly tough, but it helps to reduce sound by 31dB too making it a great choice in multi-use hospitality areas such as those in stadiums, conference centres and hotels. In fact, any public or private space that demands first-class performance and underfoot luxury from carpet would be wise to opt for Optima,” explains Richard Bailey, managing director, floorwise. Endura offers a solution that’s ideal for use when the situation isn’t quite so demanding, but with a Heavy Contract Use rating it is still great for environments wanting a newly-installed carpet to provide maximum return. Made from recycled car tyres, rubber crumb underlays offer the best in contract performance and floorwise has developed a unique composition that gives more performance per pound, ensuring that Endura and Optima are the ultimate in performance underlays. Hard wearing Expona Commercial luxury vinyl tiles in the Exposed Concrete design were installed in the new Mayfair store where Genue Ltd offers the world’s first in-store DNA test for personalised skincare. Managed by Karen Higgins Projects, this realistic stone effect floorcovering was used as part of the store design in main consulting and treatment areas. Featuring 55 stunning wood, stone and effects design options with surface textures for added authenticity, the Expona Commercial range of on trend luxury vinyl tiles has a 2.5mm gauge and 0.55 wear layer, making it suitable for high traffic, heavy commercial environments such as retail interiors. Dr Martin Stow, CEO, Geneu Ltd commented, “As this is our flagship store we wanted this retail space to truly represent our brand and style. Enhanced online Leoline

Making sure its roar matches its bite, Leoline has redeveloped its website from the mouse up, bringing a fresh new look and much more interactivity, all to build consumer engagement with the brand.

“We hear so much about engagement these days that it’s impossible to ignore. Some may see it as marketing clap-trap, but it really does have an impact on the buying process and particularly when consumers are researching purchases,” says Julie Verzelen, marketing communications manager, Leoline. “A website now has to perform much more than a simple ‘window’ and app-savvy consumers are now far more demanding about website functionality. For these reasons, we’ve given Leoline.co.uk a complete overhaul and the results are impressive.” The new website is fully responsive so works just as well on mobile and tablet devices as on laptops and PCs, but it is the content and functionality that’s the real star. Users can search by collection, or by using the filter function, by type or colour, making it easy to find the right floor. The Knowledge Bank too features all the technical information needed to make an informed choice and Google popular FAQs, users can even submit their own questions to be answered by a Leoline expert.

Expona Commercial luxury vinyl tiles are also further enhanced with PUR, Polyflor’s exclusive and robust polyurethane reinforcement which is cross linked and UV cured for a simple maintenance regime.

As one of cushion flooring’s foremost consumer brands, Leoline helps homeowners to make the right style choice, with a constantly updated blog that keeps an eye on the latest trends. There’s also an Inspiration gallery organised by room and a free sample service that allows users to order three samples for fast delivery.

Polyflor present creative flooring concepts for retail interiors in their brand new brochure, which also features a wealth of case studies from retail installations around the world. Visit the Polyflor website to read online or order your free copy.

“We’re also supporting our retailer network with the new website,” continues Victoria Hemelaer, “as users are able to search for their local stockist from a network of over 1,500 right across the UK. With traffic on the up, this is a way we can help to drive footfall to stores with the Leoline display.”

Champions of recycling

Carpet Recycling UK’s 2016 Annual Conference and Awards Event moves to a new venue - Leicester City Football Club – where the June 29th event’s theme will be ‘championing resource recovery from carpets’ with guest host and keynote speaker, celebrity architect and designer Oliver Heath.

Drawing inspiration from the success of the ‘Premier League Phenomenon Leicester City’, CRUK will be celebrating the achievements and important contributions by members – both individuals and organisations – who have helped to drive forward greater sustainability in the sector. The one-day conference, sponsored by Invista, manufacturers of ANTRON Carpet Fibres will include the annual awards event, which is open for entries now. CRUK’s conference is of interest to manufacturers, recyclers, contractors and retailers and local authorities as well as architects and designers. It will offer many networking opportunities and appeal to representatives from the whole supply chain. The full programme will examine topics such as waste prevention/redesign, take back schemes, energy recovery and good practice to encourage greater re-use and recycling of carpet. Case studies from flooring contractors include the ‘secret of carpet recycling’ and sustainability for ‘grass carpets’. Founded in 2008 to tackle the 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arising in the UK annually, CRUK’s core funders are Cormar Carpets, Lifestyle Floors/Headlam, Desso, ege, Milliken, Balsan and Marlings. Last year, 125,000 tonnes of carpet were reused, recycled or recovered for energy – a 31% landfill diversion rate. CRUK’s target is 60% diversion from landfill by 2020.

28 June 2016

The four award categories, currently open for entries, are: Recycler of the Year, Reuse Member of the Year, Take Back Partner of the Year and Recycling Champion. The winners of two additional categories added this year will be decided by a panel of experts. CRUK Director Laurance Bird commented: “Oliver Heath is a wellknown promoter of the concepts of ‘practical and style led sustainability’ and the principles of ‘ingenious recycling’, so we’re delighted to welcome him as our guest host in championing our aims to find new uses for waste carpet and divert it from landfill.” T 0161 440 8325

NEWS Touchy feely Sensit

‘As soft as it gets’, Balta Broadloom’s hugely popular Sensit family is now the proud bearer of a brand new identity, bringing a look and feel in-tune with the modern retail landscape. Under the banner ‘Touch it, love it’, Balta is promoting the softness and silken look of Sensit carpets. There are key components of the popularity of this new generation in stain-resistant carpets, as Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, explains: “While practical thanks to its bleach cleanable stain-resistant nature, the true appeal of Sensit comes in its softness and silk-like shimmer, so it’s only sensible that these qualities are reflected in the look and feel of marketing and POS materials. We’ve developed a visual language that is sure to win fans among a new generation of homeowners wanting to capture a modern and luxurious feel in their carpet.” The slogan underlines the ability of Sensit carpets to not only be wonderfully soft, but also incredibly durable and hugely desirable. Sensit has up to 200% more filaments than standard easy care yarns, giving a soft feel without any trade-off in performance or the ability to fend-off stains. These finer and more translucent filaments are also responsible for the silk-like shimmer of Sensit carpets, a thoroughly modern and luxurious look. The new branding will appear on POS displays as well as customer information leaflets with the roll-out starting later this month. T +32 56 62 22 11

Future fair for Namaste

Beyond the warranty

Rachel Brummitt of Namaste explains the importance of having its rugs certified by GoodWeave: “We work with many rug suppliers in India and have been selling fairly traded rugs for years. We have taken this additional step, to provide the added reassurance of a totally independent monitoring and inspection body which has a proven and excellent track-record. GoodWeave is an award-winning, pioneering charity and we look forward to an exciting future with them.”

“That’s why we’ve made sure all our Himalaya wool carpets are moth-proof and that our Suretex stain-resistant collection is protected from UV damage. While these may seem small developments, they can have a big impact on the ability of a carpet to endure problems down the line.”

Namaste has signed up with GoodWeave, the international rug certification scheme which ensures rugs are made child labour free with no forced or bonded labour involved. Namaste is a leading wholesaler and retailer of fairly produced products, including a wide selection of Indian made Kilims and flatweaves. Based in Skipton, North Yorkshire, Namaste has a strong ethical trading policy and is also recognised by BAFTS, The British Association for Fair Trade Shops & Suppliers as a Fair Trade Importer.

Each of Namaste certified rugs will now bear a numbered GoodWeave label on the reverse, which confirms that it has been produced by a supplier which meets the GoodWeave Standard and is randomly inspected by GoodWeave inspectors. T 0844 2437838

“We’re working hard to make sure our carpets deliver the very best and part of that is ensuring that we think about their usability in the long-term and not just through a wear warranty,” says Gordon Hugo, UK sales manager, F&X Carpets.

In fact, with websites like mumsnet seeing reports of damage from moths on the rise, Himalaya’s moth proofing is entirely relevant and something worth pointing out in the sales process. So to, is Suretex’s UV-protected status. Currently one of the few polypropylene collections to offer resistance against UV, Gordon points out that Suretex styles can be recommended in confidence in areas flooded with natural light: “Today we are seeing consumers trying to create a home that blurs the boundaries between the outdoors and in. Using large amounts of natural light is a great way to create the effect, but it brings drawbacks for carpet, particularly polypropylene styles. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can not only fade the colour of polypropylene, but also cause the fibre to degrade causing irreparable damage. With Suretex this worry is taken away, a boost of confidence for retailer and consumer alike.” With the launch of Aevita, F&X Carpets has also shown its commitment to finding manmade fibres that are better for the environment in a range of carpets using fibre made from plastic drinks bottles. The collection sees styles retain important attributes such as stain-resistance, appearance retention and durability, but in a package that keeps plastic out of the waste stream. F&X Carpets has a full range of display options available for Himalaya, Aevita and Suretex. As an introduction to Aevita, with any four rolls of Aevita carpets purchased, F&X Carpets is providing a tombola POS unit free of charge. T 07976 607657 www.fuxingcn.com

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

Understanding the assets of wool helps to sell it but there has never been a registered industry supported system for defining the detail for the wool carpet sales sector.

WoolRetailer.com The newly launched WoolRetailer.com website was given a second major boost last month when the Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show at Solihull promoted it to their visitors with a short video film promotion that covered the reasons why retailers should join the Wool Club. The reasons are quite compelling and even more so, when retailers understand that there is no cost whatsoever. The British Wool Marketing Board and The Campaign for Wool are behind this website. But for those who did not get to talk to the BWMB team at Solihull, you should know that there is much more to this website than meets the eye.

British Wool Carpet of the Month The Rare Breeds range from Brockway Carpets is blazing a trail for the British breed story available from sheep that live in the UK. It has taken wool from some of the oldest and rarest breeds - Kerry Hill, Cotswold, Norfolk Horn, Soay, Manx, Balwen, Jacob, Black Welsh and Ryeland. The range is made in 2-ply yarn and is 50oz in weight creating a very soft handle but equally very hardwearing for all areas of the home. It has the added advantage of a lightweight, crease resistant Envirobac secondary backing which adds further value to the sustainable and green story. Ten shades and a 4 and 5 metre width offering ensure this is a great package for the consumer.

Essentially, WoolRetailer.com will become a central community of independent wool specialists and will enable quality stores to be found by postcode search. The consumer browsing on the sofa can easily locate stores where they live and also find out more about the product ranges the store offers, the fitting services and opening times etc. Each Wool Specialist retailer gets their own page - which has a fresh, modern and clean look.Additionally, the consumer can find out more about the wool story and see trends and carpet care advice presented in a modern and magazine style. However, the real value to both retailers and consumers is that WoolRetailer.com also hosts the new industry accreditation programme and rewards retailers that complete the educational ‘Take Five’ tests - five short modules on wool flooring - with free registration on the website and a package of in-store promotional assets and ‘Dashboard’ benefits. All of this housed together provides independent retailers with a place to live online within a community that has a genuine identity and real credibility that is evident to consumers. Instilling confidence and helping to build a relationship before and even after the consumer leaves the store. Accreditation for the wool flooring sector has been long overdue. Understanding the assets of wool helps to sell it but there has never been a registered industry supported system for defining the detail for the wool carpet sales sector. The question is - do retailers want it? It is clear they do. Over 200 retailers have successfully completed the Take Five tests and are now accredited ‘Wool Specialists’ and that is since the end of March when it was launched at Wool Floor Show London. Reports from Solihull where British Wool were talking to retailers continuously about it were also very positive and it seems that it is the Wool Specialist Accreditation that is really appealing to them. The feeling that the knowledge they have is valuable and worth recognising. WoolRetailer.com will be used within consumer promotions in magazines and social media that will be organised and run by British Wool and the Campaign for Wool. Fully endorsed by leading manufacturers and buying groups, it has a lot more to offer than an ordinary website. Take five… and check it out today at WoolRetailer.com from The2016 Stocklists 32 June

and why we like it... Let’s be honest, that is a a roll call of some really impressive sheep! Rare Breeds is a natural winner - and also winner of the British Wool Award at this year’s International Wool Carpet and Rug Awards held in March. Competition was quite high but there is no escaping the quality of the product and the research and development expertise. The world needs carpets like this!

Buying Groups

National Flooring Show

MARKET COMMENTARY

Scene-setting in Solihull The Solihull show goes from strength to strength as the scene-setter for the Summer season and this year’s event was boosted by better than ever attendance and an clear improvement in manufacturer stands that points to growing confidence in the industry.

The Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show is a members-only event and for the first time this year, all the main UK groups were supporting the occasion – as well as more than 60 of the leading flooring suppliers. “This is a superb show,” says Steve Elliott of Associated Weavers. “well organized, well focused and time well spent for the suppliers and visitors.” Malcolm Gibson of Furlong Flooring agreed: “This is the best opportunity of the year for retailers to see right across the industry in one go with everything that’s latest and greatest.” The event is the first major occasion to sample the trends reflected in product launches across the sector and some key themes emerge. There’s a sense that consumers are willing to buy a better carpet this year with more opportunities to trade up. Manufacturers are responding with more options within their ranges, with higher top end price points, and there is growing confidence in launching quality products with more wool, notably in a series of launches from Cormar, and the increased promotion of flagship ranges like Victoria Twist and Adam’s Fine Worcester Twist. More expensive synthetic fibres such as nylon and polyester are being used, especially in the surge for ‘soft’ where manufacturers are looking for something new to maintain interest. AW have added to their super successful iSense and Invictus ranges while Abingdon have gone deep into soft using polyester and Cavalier are developing in this area.

“This is the best opportunity of the year for retailers to see right across the industry in one go with everything that’s latest and greatest.”

Manufacturers continue to excel themselves with the creativity and intelligence of their point of sale offerings and notable examples include AW’s stunning new wall display system, the bright and cheerful overhaul of Victoria’s presentation and Kingsmead’s Clean Easy units which have been received with enthusiasm. The colour trends that tend towards greys are endemic across the industry with black and silver being the ‘new grey’ for some. But taupes, blues and soft pinks are starting to liven up the palette in 2016. The LVT market is increasingly design-led with suppliers encouraging installers to be ambitious by mixing across their product ranges to achieve impactful results.

Flooring One’s Gallery concept is a noteworthy piece of intelligent marketing that gives retailers the opportunity to trade up if they think consumer confidence will bear it. The appetite for texture and not-quite-plain is very strong as shown in debuts for textured ranges at Manx, Clarendon, Hugh Mackay and the re-launched Avebury at Cormar.

“Flooring One’s Gallery concept is a noteworthy piece of intelligent marketing that gives retailers the opportunity to trade up if they think consumer confidence will bear it.”

Another crushing success Kenburn The Kenburn Carpet Crusher returned to the BGNFS after making its debut in 2015 and received another enthusiastic response from the flooring industry for the environmental and financial benefits of recycling new and old carpet and underlay waste. A recent installation of the Carpet Crusher was for Andersons of Inverurie and their MD Sandy Anderson comments, “for many years Andersons have been recycling all our packaging waste and we’ve been looking at various schemes to ensure our customers carpet and underlay waste doesn’t end up in landfill.” “We’d read about the successes Kenburn were having with other retailers using the “carpet crusher”, so invited them to our store to ask for advice on how best to recycle our carpet and underlay waste." He continued, “Kenburn recommended a “waste to energy” solution and the waste is now used as a fuel for powering concrete kilns rather than using coal, the recycling costs are significantly less than landfill so as well as diverting recyclable waste from landfill, we’re also reducing our waste management costs at the same time.” Simon Wells from Kenburn adds “As well as meeting with new potential customers for our recycling initiatives, the BGNFS also gave us the opportunity to find out from the retailers currently using the scheme how financially viable it was for them and the feedback we received was 100% positive with one retailer saving £800.00 per month in skip costs. “Whilst in theory a recycling scheme that saves money sounds great, there needs to be a certain level of waste generated to justify installing a Carpet Crusher which is why Kenburn offer a free of charge no obligation waste survey to determine whether or not our recycling initiatives can save you money”. Buzz about the biz Carpenter There’s a buzz about the PU underlay business at Carpenter who have spent the last year getting their product portfolio right up to date and now want to shout about it. “We’ve been very focused on getting our product mix right for retailers and we’re getting a very positive response from the market as a result,” says Carpenter’s Helen Rowberry. “Now there will be more emphasis on marketing so that we can spread the message.” Carpenter has been building its sales team and the latest recruit is Simon Hollick (pictured right, centre) who will be covering the Midlands and Wales territory. Helen hinted at new products later in the year. “Our product development has been very strong and we’ll have some new things to say later this year. This is an exciting time for Carpenter,” she said. Associated Weavers

Innovative impact It’s all about impact at Associated Weavers. They’ve already taken the market by storm with the launches of the super soft ranges in their iSense and Invictus yarns so now they want to ensure that the consumers sit up and take notice! “After such a successful set of range launches we know that these are the carpets people want. Now we want to make sure, in store, that they are immediately attracted to them so we’ve built a whole new approach around our three brands,” says AW’s Steve Elliott (right). And the attraction comes in highly innovative new POS which includes a uniquely styled wall display system – large, dramatic, graphic panels are integrated into an aluminium frame system with LED lighting and the samples – two ranges per unit – are housed in a furniture-quality base. Retailers are required to take at least 3 units and the full set of eight is highly impressive and has graphics for two iSense ranges, two for Invictus, three for StainAway and the last for a British wool range. AW install the system, including a carpet frontage to the area – and they even organise the skip to take away the older AW units. Away from the wall, new stands for Invictus ranges comprise a tall ‘furniture’ stand and a lectern for the newly launched Hyperion and Hercules ranges. These complement the quality set of iSense stands that have been so successful for the last couple of years. The colourful new branding that has re-launched the popular StainAway collection is shown off to best effect with a new set of units – a lectern, a furniture stand and a graphics pillar. “Everything has come together so well now - the products, the branding and the presentation,” says Steve. “This package ensures a retailer can be part of the AW success story.” T 01422 431100 www.associatedweavers.net

The latest in AW’s soft revolution were revealed in Solihull with the launch of three Invictus newcomers to complete a set of seven ranges in AW’s Ivinci yarn. Hyperion is a luxurious 70oz saxony while new Scorpius is a lighter sister product to Sirius which has become a best-seller since its launch last September. Herculus is an interesting addition – a bi-colour version of the yarn which gives a heather-like appearance but with a bigger pattern and better defined. In the iSense collection, AW have been innovating with this polyamide yarn to create a de-lustred appearance and brought this through into a luxurious 70oz saxony carpet called Suspense.

The eye-catching new wall units drew in the crowds and provided the perfect backdrop to introduce the concept to interested parties”, explained Birger Karlsson, sales director UK, Lano. “The striking choice of colour showcased within the portfolio was a major talking point, something identified as unique within the sector and something we were able to achieve by incorporating the very best in Smartstrand, wool, nylon and bamboo qualities within the X Collection”, continued Birger. Lano also showcased the Essenz collection of entry-level polypropylene styles, including the famous Startwist and Heathertwist. A new modern lifestyle look to POS is sure to win new fans for these enduring styles. Yet Lano didn’t stop here, with retailers also discovering the manufacturer’s super-soft polypropylene offer. Making an unmissable mark Kingsmead Carpets Kingsmead sets out to be unmissable in store with its Clean Easy collection and the new range of POS made its mark at Solihull. In Clean Easy’s distinctive black and bright green livery, the new kit comprises a revolving pattern book stand which takes eight books and then a lectern unit which holds nine ranges. “Too many pattern books end up in a pile on the floor and get forgotten,” says Kingsmead’s Martin West. “We wanted to create a real presence in store using a free-standing presentation that carries a lot of carpet and provides an alternative to wall space for smaller stores.” The new units will be rolling out to retailers in June. Range launches in polypropylene at the show included Breathtaking – a soft salt-andpepper Saxony in 11 colours and two weights, the 74oz being the heaviest weight Kingsmead have ever launched in the Everlon Super Soft fibre. The company’s new Tremendous range uses the “next generation of 3-colour yarn” to create a distinctive look that’s more like a berber than a heather in 11 colours and two wait. Finally there was a sneak preview of a superb new luxury velvet in Stainmaster nylon called Velutto which will be launched later this Summer under the Stoddard brand – it will be worth the wait! Forging ahead Furlong Flooring Furlong is forging ahead with a product portfolio that ticks all the boxes for many retailers who are looking for a supplier who can service them across the widest range of consumer needs. Attendance at the company’s superb stand at Solihull was a sign of the growing success of this approach. It was the Furlong debut for Mike Symonds (pictured far left) who has moved to the company’s Southern Division from his top role at buying group SMG. “It’s great to be here and there is a huge opportunity to build recognition across the industry for just how good the Furlong package really is, both in terms of products and for the service levels which are among the best in the business.” Mike will be focusing on Furlong’s relationship with buying groups and independent retailers. The company also announced that their Natural Solutions business for wood and laminate flooring is being rolled out nationally this Summer with stocking points through the UK for a top quality product range that has attracted strong interest from retailers looking to get into this sector. Picking winners Mastercraft Rugs Mastercraft Rugs achieved another accolade in a series of annual successes as the Flooring One buying group’s rug supplier of the year but they don’t take the award for granted. “We have to work hard to stay ahead and we’re constantly evolving the choice we can offer our customers,” says MD Robert Dickson. “Our role is to pick best sellers that the retailer can be confident will sell to consumers and in a sector that is very responsive to trends, that requires a lot of research and attention to detail.” New designs in the flagship ranges Galleria and Mehari bear out this focus and the trend towards new greys and silvers comes shining through alongside the subtle blues and pinks that are increasing popular. The latest black and grey combination in the super chunky Mammoth rug is a real eye-catcher. Mastercraft’s Twilight is among the best shaggies on the market and maintains its leadership with five new colours in its range of 20, including a vibrant cranberry that is expected to be a best-seller. Together with 16 size options, Twilight offers everything a consumer could ask for in this style! Premiering at the buying group show was new Spectrum (pictured bottom left), a very fashionable rug with a deep and slightly shiny pile distinguished by a very subtle stripe – a great option for the trend towards ‘not quite plain.’ The other newcomer was Highline, a distinctive 100% wool flatweave in a range of designery options which will appeal to fashion conscious buyers.

A cut above a rug Vorwerk The rug business is booming for Vorwerk now that an innovative program to cut up their carpets into smaller shapes has been launched in the UK and received a very enthusiastic response from retailers. The concept works across the company’s multi-width carpet collection – covering some 30 ranges – which can cut to custom sizes and edged in one of eleven finishes. The approach also gives retailers the opportunity to sell a coordinating Vorwerk rug alongside a cut length carpet in another room. “We’ve only just launched this idea and we’re delighted with the response,” says Howard Lindsay of Vorwerk. “Rugs aren’t easy. The risk of running up stocks of the wrong ones is always a problem but here’s a rug program with no stock and the samples are already in the store in our pattern books.” T 01282 332025 www.vorwerk-carpets.com

Tracking the trends Manx Carpets There’s so much going on at Manx who have a track record of intelligent product development and they came to the buying group show with three launches that track current trends in the market place. Luxury Comfort lives up to its name as a sumptuous 90oz heavyweight saxony in cosy, soft 2-ply polypropylene which will be available in 12 colours and two widths starting early June (pictured left with Manx’s Graham Harris). Taking up trends for texture, Manx has been bold with Donegal – a chunky 3-ply wool loop in two widths and in two textures, one of which is a ½ gauge which is definitely chunky when you reckon a standard loop is 5/32. One to watch is the new Pandora Plains at Manx which could well become a mainstream product for the company. The 80/20 twist offers 19 contemporary plain tones in four weights – the company see this as a useful tool for retailers to use to trade consumers up and down the different price points. Buck House - the trend Ball & Young Cloud 9’s flagship PU underlay brand Caviar & Crystal has finally found it’s natural home - at Buckingham Palace! Ball & Young emphasized their ‘Made in Britain’ credentials with a stand at the Solihull show which was a masterpiece of patriotic design. The underlay rolled across the stand and right up the Mall on a huge graphic of the royal residence. And as no Cloud 9 display is without the company’s trademark teddies, the bears were proudly on parade as beefeaters. “We’re very patriotic and so this year we wanted to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday and also wave the British flag for our teams in the European football and the Olympics this summer,” said Ball & Young’s Ann Shaw. All loved up Abingdon Carpets Love is in the air to spice up the intense relationship that the carpet industry is having with softness this season. The showcase launch of Abingdon’s Lasting Romance at Solihull created a lot of attention for the feel and performance of its polyester construction. “The response has been phenomenal,” says Martin Peace of Abingdon. “It is really soft but the fibre is very robust and still bleach cleanable – it is also a much lower cost than nylon. It really is an all round winner!” Martin’s confidence is based on early rolls sales which he describes as the company’s best-ever launch so they have high hopes when the cut-length range goes out on lecterns in July. There are 12 colours and the two widths – 2.5 and 5m. “There is so much soft about everywhere that people are now looking for something extra and I also think more consumers are prepared to buy better carpet now,” adds Martin. Lasting Romance forms the start of the “Love Story Collection” that Abingdon is introducing into the market under the strapline: “Fall in love with your floor.” T 01274 655662 www.abingdonflooring.co.uk

Showtime in Solihull Review of the Flooring One Show 2016

Building more value back into business Buying groups exist to help their members achieve better business and Flooring One has taken the initiative in a highly intelligent marketing project to help retailers build more value back into their sales. Flooring One has created a new label, ‘The Gallery Collection’ and has carefully identified more profitable wool products in an ascending order of price and quality. The mission is to trade up consumers wherever possible. “Looking at the market as a whole since the recession, the growing importance of polypropylene runs the risk that retailers are working harder for less profit,” says Flooring One’s Glenn Harding. “There are some great synthetic products out there and they are mainstream money-makers for our members, but retailers also need to look for those opportunities where consumers will pay more.” “Not all consumers can be traded up but when the chance is there it needs to be taken to halt the erosion of profits,’ he says. “We’ve selected 12 ranges – each of which does a different job in the collection and they stretch the price points to see how far you can go with a consumer. The reward can be twice as much profit for the same sales effort.”

“There are some great synthetic products out there and they are mainstream money-makers for our members, but retailers also need to look for those opportunities where consumers will pay more.”

The Gallery Collection has products which will retail from under £30 to nearly £50. At the lower end there is Waterford, a 2-ply 50oz twist with a limited colour choice but then smart 80/20 wool twists Aspiration and Chisholm add quality and colour options. Top end is the wilton twist Sherwood and in between are more niche products such as chunky 100% wool loop Weavercroft and undyed Wool Luxury and also Crystal Lights, a velvet twist combination. Flooring One clearly got the choices right – two of the selections have just received prestigious awards from judges at the Wool Floor Show London in Chelsea in March.

And to top off the quality pitch, wool carpet supplier Jacaranda is in advanced discussions to join the buying group’s Cenpac supplier portfolio to add their prestigious ranges to the opportunities available to buying group members. Peter Karra talks to a member about the latest rug catalogue

Elsewhere across the buying group’s product portfolio, Flooring One has been tracking trends and adjusting the mix to reflect the latest fashions in flooring. Highlights include Hadrian Twist, the first own-label range badged with AW’s Invictus super-soft fibre, and Cambrian, a multi-width wool loop which adds to the choice for texture. The latest SmartStrand silk products are also being introduced. Flooring One’s highly respected rug collection has been updated for the year ahead. “I have to say that this year’s rug catalogue is superb, says Glenn. “We have really delivered this year a selection that is 70% guaranteed bestsellers and then 30% of options which in our judgment will succeed in the months ahead. This is the way to take the risk out of rug buying.” And Flooring One doesn’t let the grass gorw under its feet – Lano’s Easy Lawn has joined the portfolio. T 0121 683 1426 www.flooringone.co.uk

Flower on Flooring There is no substitute for experience As new flooring designs and product are introduced, the need for skilled people to fit them becomes more urgent, placing more emphasis on training and development. While the well-known phrase, 'There's no substitute for experience' is highly pertinent in all industries, training is essential in order to gain the correct level of initial understanding, followed by refresher courses to keep pace with industry requirements. Academy for Excellence in Flooring technical manager Lee Thompson says:“Training is a great way to incentivise and motivate staff and here at the academy we’ve seen hundreds of employees through our doors to learn everything they need about wood, laminate and luxury vinyl from Quick-Step." Improving product knowledge builds confidence and helps sales employees deal with customer questions which in turn builds trust, a key factor in the decision making process, he continues, and explains that the academy can help to establish the broad spectrum of knowledge needed, with content tailored to specific needs. “We can fill in the blanks, as well as provide a course that meets common queries or a strong foundation for all levels. Our courses have been attended by small independent retailers and large multi-national operations and all have reported that attendance was incredibly worthwhile and useful,” says Mr Thompson. Academy for Excellence in Flooring

Polyflor offers a number of training courses at its purpose built Training School facility in Manchester to develop the all-round skills of floor layers in laying vinyl flooring. Delivered by trainer Tim Green, Polyflor’s courses include hands-on exercises mixed with a blend of technical theory on vinyl flooring, subfloors, adhesives, fitting, skirting and tools.A range of scenarios allow attendees to develop a greater understanding of the situations they will face when laying vinyl floors. Options range from a one day course on floorcare, to guarantee years of performance for flooring products, to a two day course focusing on luxury vinyl tiles, with three- and four-day courses also available. Four day courses include an entire day on the more complex finishing and detailing tasks to allow attendees to develop their specialist skills. The impact that good quality training can have on a company or an individual’s success cannot be understated, the Flooring Industry Training Association advises, and highlights a variety of training related challenges facing the flooring sector with the potential to impact on business success. These include labour shortages, skills gaps and the Government's Apprenticeship Levy. However, in a buoyant market the importance of training can be overlooked as companies and individuals are often too busy to train, which can then have consequences when client demands, products, standards, legislation, qualifications or card schemes like CSCS change and restrict business growth. FITA is here to help with its own well equipped training centre (supported by the CFA and NICF) which provides a range of floorcovering programmes that consistently receive glowing reviews, it states. The Fibre Care Specialist course instructs trainees how to identify different carpet fibres and constructions and discusses special considerations, chemistry and techniques required to safely and effectively clean them. 46 June 2016

Polyflor training course

Technicians trained as Fibre Care Specialists can achieve the best cleaning results without the risk of issues and with increased confidence when talking to carpet owners, a combination that leads to more recommendations and referrals from happy clients. There are now approximately 500 WoolSafe Approved Service Providers around the world that have technicians trained as Fibre Care Specialists. The National Carpet Cleaners Association says companies that regard training as an unwelcome expense have a very short sighted view. Change is a fact of life and every business needs to adapt to stay competitive.Training is the best way to achieve this, it states. With new flooring products emerging all the time, businesses can quickly find themselves outclassed by their competition if they fail to keep up. Health and safety and consumer protection legislation are also important considerations. The answer? See training as an investment, set a budget, identify which training will generate the best return and monitor the results, says NCCA. Floor Skills, the training provider partner for the British Wood Flooring Association, is located on the outskirts of Birmingham and offers workshops on subfloor preparation, installation, sand and seal, board replacements and repairs. Membership of the BWFA is not necessary. Options include the Wood Flooring Apprenticeship, a two year course which can be fully funded through the CITB, with additional funding available to cover an apprentices' wage or expenses while attending the centre.Training is spread over 18 months in block release format, followed by assessment at work during the final six months. Ball marketing manager Richard Harris says: “From our perspective, the most important thing is to develop good working habits right from the beginning of a contractor¹s career, ensuring they keep employing best practice. F. Ball products are developed and manufactured to facilitate this. Our customers are incredibly loyal because they know that our products work exactly as they are supposed to, and with the same results, every time. "By providing free training for contractors, we can also make sure that they are getting the most out of our products, and that they make fewer mistakes when it comes to product selection. This allows them to get jobs done right the first time, saving them a great deal of time and money over the course of their F Ball’s Training Centre in action careers."

“We’ve just completed our eighth annual Flooring Guild training course to give independent carpet retailers a chance to improve their knowledge, practical skills and selling skills. We’re delighted to provide this training to the industry and every year we get really good feedback from the carpet retailers that attend. I am sure that the training not only helps them in terms of their sales, but also their overall customer service," says Mr Cormack. Altro technical services manager Peter Daulby says formal training at the start of any employment is invaluable; it drastically shortens the time taken to get them up to speed and this off-sets the cost involved. "Trainees can learn tricks of the trade and the latest tweaks while ironing out any bad habits," he says. "You go to a purpose-built facility where you get one-to-one attention, time and there’s no pressure; if you get it wrong then you can try again. The Altro training school includes a factory tour where attendees see products being made from scratch.”

Retail training - Cormar

Cormar Carpets marketing director David Cormack says training plays a large part in a company's success, yet is often perceived as a cost rather than an investment. “But there is enormous value in providing proper training and education, for your customers as well as your staff," he continues. "The right training makes you better informed, perform better and increases productivity. Today’s consumers are particularly discerning so it’s more important than ever to raise skill levels. Staff are your greatest asset so invest in them.

Housing overhaul

High performance subfloor preparation products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd., have been used in a major housing development in London.

The great fitter final

The National Institute of Carpet and Floorlayers (NICF) have re-launched the Carpet Fitter of the Year Competition after a fifteen year hiatus. The grand final will take place over the first two days of The Flooring Show on 18 and 19 September at the Harrogate International Centre.

Industry sponsors of the NICF Carpet Fitter of The Year 2016 Award include ARDEX UK Ltd, F Ball & Co Ltd, Ball & Young Ltd, Bostik Ltd, Carpenter Ltd, Contract Flooring Journal, Cormar Carpets, Hanson Plywood Ltd, Interfloor Ltd, Lifestyle Floors, Roberts UK, Spotnails Ltd, The Stocklists, Tramex Ltd, Uzin Ltd and Which? Trusted Traders. NICF would like to thank all the sponsors for their support. Speaking about bringing the competition back, NICF President, Ian James said: “I always said that if I were ever NICF President I would make it my mission to bring the competition back - after all, there isn't a fitter in the land that wouldn’t want UK ‘Fitter of the Year’ on his van.”

Contractors from Hillingdon Flooring Company, based in Slough, were appointed to prepare and install the new floors on the Aylesbury Estate development in Walworth, which comprises 9,000m2 of floor space across five blocks of flats and four blocks of terraced houses. The job was completed using F. Ball’s Stopgap Green Bag and 114 liquid, a fast setting, protein free smoothing underlayment. Firstly, the sand/cement screed subfloors were sanded down and a moisture test was taken, which indicated that the subfloors were dry enough to continue without the use of a moisture management system. After priming the surface with Stopgap P131 general purpose primer, contractors applied Stopgap Green Bag 114 at a 3mm thickness to smooth out any undulations. A spiked roller was then used to remove any trapped air from the smoothing underlayment and smooth out any flow lines, ensuring a more aesthetically pleasing finish. Stopgap Green Bag 114’s fast setting and high strength properties made it ideal for this development as it dried quickly and was strong enough to withstand heavy-duty foot traffic once work restarted. Andrew Stroud, Contracts Manager at Hillingdon Flooring Company said: “We have used F. Ball products for years so we know they are reliable and provide a high standard finish.” T 01538 361 633

www.f-ball.co.uk

The competitors entered the competition by registering online and completing a questionnaire, twelve of those who entered were chosen to progress forward to the next stage, the practical skills trial at the FITA Training Centre in Loughborough. Six finalists will then progress to take part in the grand final. The competition provides a platform for tradespeople to demonstrate their experience, skills, knowledge and competency of their profession, allows for a bit of healthy competition and the chance to win some fantastic prizes: including £1000 cash, a selection of tools, winner’s trophy, one year’s free NICF Master Fitter membership and an iPad that has kindly been donated by Which? NEWS Cultivating consumers

Leading rug manufacturer Flair Rugs has invested in a diverse consumer PR campaign in order to support its retailers and to increase awareness of its extensive product collections among homeowners up and down the country. “PR is an incredibly important aspect of any business strategy, and we view it as a way of generating genuine excitement about our products and real selling leads,” comments Gareth Davies, UK Sales & Marketing Director, Flair Rugs. “As a result of cultivating relationships with key media in the home interest sector, both nationally, regionally and online, we expect to secure fantastic coverage which should lead to an increase in enquiry levels for our retailers, with members of the public interested in learning about Flair and the rugs on offer.” Working in conjunction with a leading interiors PR agency, Flair has already seen featured coverage in widely read national titles, meaning over half a million people, and therefore potential new customers, have been introduced to products from the brand. Flair is also set to feature in high profile interiors titles such as House Beautiful, Good Homes and Period Ideas over the coming months, while appearing on prominent online blogs as the importance of digital presence continues to grow. “Our commitment to raising our profile through PR channels proves our dedication to supporting our stockists, and this is something that is set to continue throughout 2016 and beyond,” adds Gareth Davies. “Thanks to our hugely extensive portfolio spanning a number of the latest looks, early response from the press has been positive, and we expect this reaction to strengthen with Flair holding a design to meet almost any feature or scheme.” T 01457 850660

NEWS Best fit forward

Back to the future

As part of Quick-Step’s continued focus on the latest interior looks and trends, the flooring manufacturer explores Memphis and its abstract patterns, geometric motifs, bright colours and contrasting combinations. Quick-Step always has its finger on the pulse when it comes to underfoot inspiration, introducing the latest for retailers and consumers alike to enjoy. The 80s are back with a vengeance and, hey presto, so is Memphis, including in your home! Yes, the Memphis style never fails to add a bold, audacious twist, and can be replicated in furniture, decoration, fabrics and even our choice of flooring.

If you want to incorporate Memphis, then start with a pared down basic structure. The right floor is vital as it is the first element that helps provide the strong foundation for this exuberant style. Choose a white or grey, in everyone’s favourite, wood, or why not go for stone or concrete. Begin to combine these clean finishes with brightly coloured accents and punchy prints, and the look begins to come alive.

Ever since the launch of the Academy for Excellence in Flooring in 2012, the search by homeowners for Master Installers to fit their Quick-Step and Pergo floors have risen to unprecedented levels, with over 1,000 requests a month received through the www.quick-step.co.uk website alone. This shows that consumers are increasingly opting to employ the very best to fit their floor. With the premium status of Quick-Step laminate, LVT and wood flooring, research suggests that a growing number of consumers are looking for qualified installers that are trained in the correct installation of the brand’s products to guarantee the best finish to their interior project.Through the ‘Find an Installer’ page, homeowners can search for their closest Master Installer. The page also gives details on the optional free two-year workmanship warranty, available on any work carried out by an accredited Master Installer. “When consumers select Quick-Step floors, they are drawn to the beautiful design and exceptional quality of the product and it appears that their desire to select the very best also extends to the eventual fitting,” comments Michelle Magill, marketing manager at the Academy for Excellence in Flooring. The Master Installer scheme is open to all installers with previous experience of installing wood, laminate and LVT flooring. Along with the free two-year warranty, Master Installer ID card and listing on the QuickStep website, successful attendees also enjoy van stickers, the ability to purchase exclusive clothing and a full set of Master Installer laminate swatches with three years of updates. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

What is the objective of Memphis? A conversation! Of course, functionality is important in our homeware but this is not the priority; with Memphis, it is all about shapes and looks, creating something individual that won’t be found elsewhere. Memphis is most definitely back, clinical and packed full of vivid colour. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Goodweave shines a light

Nina Smith, Executive Director of GoodWeave International, has been announced as the winner of the prestigious Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2016, organised by the Schwab Foundation. The Award honours those who are “correcting market failures with tools of capitalism” and will be presented in June at the 2016 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting.

The Award recognises Smith’s leadership role in the anti-slavery movement and her outstanding contribution to the growth and success of the GoodWeave market-driven model to end child labour and trafficking in global supply chains. GoodWeave’s initial focus in the handmade rug industry of South Asia has contributed to an 80% decline in the prevalence of “carpet kids.” The organisation is currently expanding its mandate to reach and protect informal workers deep within complex subcontracted supply chains; initiatives are already underway in brick kilns and the apparel industry. “Companies have spent more than $50 billion on corporate social responsibility and supply chain-related initiatives since 2011,” says Smith “yet why is it that 168 million children still toil in global supply chains?” She suggests in a recent blog for the World Economic Forum that companies and NGOs are looking for the problem in the wrong place. The most flagrant forms of child labour and forced labour happen in village sheds and even inside homes, but efforts to address abuse typically reach only the factory level. Smith expressed her thanks to the Schwab Foundation for honouring the work of GoodWeave and “helping to shine a light on the workers, especially children, who are suffering in obscurity at the bottom of supply chains.” T 0844 2437838 50 June 2016

X factor for Lano

Not only equipped with beautiful Smartstrand and Smartstrand Silk Collections, Lano’s new collective of high-end residential carpet, The X Collection, also brings retailers and consumers a striking range of wool, nylon and bamboo styles.

Next to five Smartstrand ranges, the portfolio also comprises three wool collections including established favourites Mayfair and Oasis alongside the new Mirage. Also featured is the hugely popular 100% nylon Satine collection and the contemporary Bamboo Luxe. With natural anti-bacterial and humidity regulation properties when turned into carpet yarn bamboo is also exceptionally soft, making it an ideal addition to the luxurious styles in ‘X’. Available in 16 elegant hues, Bamboo Luxe creates an inviting and glamorous feel with its 1/10th saxony pile in a 1,300g/m2 weight. “The X Collection celebrates the joy of indulgence, bringing together our most exquisite styles of which Bamboo Luxe certainly is,” comments Birger Karlsson, sales director UK, Lano. “The objective of the luxurious X Collection was always to showcase our Smartstrand and Smartstrand Silk collections in a way we believed would appeal to our retail partners and their customers. As the concept took shape, it soon became clear that to add a choice of wool, nylon and bamboo would be a natural fit. Now, in particular, with the addition of Bamboo Luxe, with its beautiful silken look and contemporary feel, we witness a collection comprising 10 ranges that bring quality, style and choice across the board”. As part of ‘X’, all of the ranges featured can also be commissioned in beautiful bespoke-size area rugs, with two edge styles in Pure and Elegance. With Pure, carpet edges are turned over and the rug is backed with a non-slip and moisture-resistant underlay. In Elegance, rugs are finished with colourmatched ribbon and again a non-slip and moisture-resistant underlay. The ribbon of Elegance is narrow for a ‘barely there’ look that’s instantly luxurious. Memories of Keith Fisher

It is with sadness that floorwise announces that Keith Fisher, former chairman and owner of Salesmark, died 17th April, aged 61 years, following complications after surgery for cancer. Keith will be fondly remembered for his effervescent personality and impact on the industry, which he served so remarkably for over 40 years.

Joining the industry as a sales representative for Uniroyale, Keith joined the Salesmark organisation in 1977 which was then sold to CH Industrial. After the demise of CH Industrial, Keith set up his own business in 1990 and continued to trade as an independent wholesaler under the Salesmark name. In 1993, Keith and the Salesmark brand joined floorwise, before becoming a director in 1997 and chairman from 2004 to 2011. As a character full of life, Keith was responsible for the organisation of many group trips for customers, including the legendary police escorted tuk tuk ride in Thailand, a journey that will be held fondly in the memory of all involved. Outside of his working life, Keith was a keen golfer and once captain of Bognor Regis Golf Club, though many in the floorwise group questioned his purchase of a Porsche Boxster in which his golf clubs didn’t fit. Keith will be missed by everyone in the industry who had the pleasure of knowing him. T 01509 673974

NEWS Fading fashions

Louis de Poortere has developed its hugely popular Fading World collection to include five new colours, each created to meet the needs of the archetypal modern living space.

Tuned to incorporate looks of the moment, including gallant greys and shimmering silvers, the updated Fading World collection plays as much on its colour as it does its intricate medallion design, helping to elevate our interiors to new heights. White Pepper, Black Pepper, Salt & Pepper and King of Spices all fall within this subtle yet trendy bracket, although there is an option for the outlandish as Aleppo Pepper introduces itself in hot and spicy red. As ever the case with Louis de Poortere, to choose from Fading World is to choose from a collection of imperious quality, this time premium cotton chenille the preferred fibre, with a flatweave construction and use of jacquard wilton looms further enhancing the rug’s touch and feel. The end result is a surface with multiple layers of texture, available in Louis de Poortere’s nine staple stock sizes. A high performer for a number of years, Fading World is set to maintain its allure with its five new hues, all of which debuted at this year’s Buying Groups National Flooring Show. Fading World continues as the company’s flagship range, supported by 2016 additions Mad Men and Mosaiq, as well as Vintage, Cameo, Silver Lining and BoBohemian collections. Backing safety and comfort

Some two years ago, Edel Telenzo launched a revolutionary backing for its tufted carpets, the first free of styrene-butadiene (SBR); Ceneva, offering markedly improved fire resistance and completely odour-free. Concerns surrounding the use of SBR have been mounting in prevalence over recent years and so retailers now have a clear option for consumers concerned about its use, all tufted carpets from Edel Telenzo come equipped with Ceneva. The removal of SBR not only eliminates odour, but the vinyl acetate ethylene (VAE) used as a replacement binder leads to much improved flammability performance. VAE also helps carpets with Ceneva to be more flexible and to offer excellent tuft bind and lamination qualities. “We were the world’s first carpet manufacturer to eliminate the use of SBR in our backing and it has transformed our tufted carpet collections for the better,” explains Annemarie Hadders, marketing manager, Edel Telenzo. “Ceneva is hugely beneficial in the home; not only does it eliminate that oftenpungent ‘new carpet smell’, but it gives the carpet far better flammability performance and helps fibre to stay put. These are all huge pluses when it comes to making an enduring choice.”

By eliminating SBR, Ceneva emits fewer VOCs (volatile organic compounds) into the air eliminating odour and providing a health benefit. It is also worth noting that there are international regulations in place to reduce VOCs in household goods. Ceneva’s resistance to burning is a huge improvement over traditional backings too and in the unfortunate event of a fire, the backing does not emit toxic black smoke. Sad loss of Simon Dutfield

Simon Dutfield, a leading member of the family that founded Axminster Carpets, died on April 14, at the age of 69. Simon was joint MD of the business with his father Harry and took over as company chairman in 1999 on the death of Mr Dutfield Senior. He later passed on the MD role to his son Josh, but remained chairman until early 2013. Commenting on social media, northern sales director of Axminster Carpets, Ian McDee posted: “RIP to this wonderful man who gave me a chance with Axminster 31 years ago and is the reason I stayed so long. A true inspiration to me and many others.” Simon grew the business very substantially, driving it from £3m turnover when he took over to over £30m and over 1,000 staff – the largest employer in the Devon town – and gaining a Royal Warrant for supplying carpets to Buckingham Palace. Production facilities trebled over the period making Axminster carpets one of the worlds largest woven carpet manufacturers in the world. He pioneered the ‘fleece to floor’ concept with Axminster owning its own spinners and even a flock of sheep on the Devon moors. He had a reputation for the care and welfare he extended to his staff and the community in which the company operated. Many tributes were paid in the town of Axminster and he will be sadly missed by the flooring industry. It is understood that Simon died of a heart attack at home. He is survived by his wife Nerys, eight children and seven grandchildren.

New tone for stone

Karndean Designflooring is introducing 11 new stone designs and five complementary borders to its popular Da Vinci collection.

Bringing the natural beauty and intricate textures of real stone indoors, the distinct 18” x 12” tiles take inspiration from weathered steel, natural stone and woven fabric and offer a fresh palette of colours to suit any décor. The three groups – Weathered Steel, Natural Stone and Woven Fabric – explore latest trends in interior design including natural weathering, fossilisation and woven fabrics, and reflect Karndean’s unrivalled ability to take products from the natural world and recreate them in LVT. “Following the success of our Da Vinci Wood update last year, we’re excited to be introducing fresh stone designs to complete the collection,” commented Scott Cochrane, sales director of Karndean Designflooring. He said: “The new stone designs offer our independent retail network our popular 12” x 18” rectangular tile in a higher specification for residential spaces. Likewise, these designs offer unique detailing and interpretations of real stone that are easy to clean and maintain in the home.” From the striking rust and weathered tones of Molten to the subtle, dark hues of Carbon, all four colourways – Molten, Iron Ore, Eisen and Carbon - present the transformation of weathered steel over time. The four natural stone designs feature the realistic grain and fossilisation of limestone. The final three designs in the collection – Burnet, Cambric and Sindon – challenge what we see as stone and offer modern, natural colours with a minimalistic look and subtle strands across each tile. Introducing additional design variations, the new Da Vinci Stone collection comes with the option of contrasting and complementary borders and design strips. T 01386 820100

Athena adds to shaggy story

Much like Flair’s other shaggy success stories, Wisp, Nordic and Sumptuous, Athena is plentiful to the touch as well as the eye, creating a calming ambiance in trendy luxe schemes. This is in large part achieved through a generous 5cm pile height, offering a denser, more luxurious end effect than many of its polypropylene rivals.

Available in seven colourways, from on-trend Silver and Charcoal to the bolder Teal and Red, there’s also room for a beautiful finish as Athena stuns this design season. Gareth Davies, UK Sales and Marketing Director, Flair Rugs, explains: “We are delighted to present Athena to our customers with its extra dense pile, and can’t wait to see the effect these rugs will have on interiors of both a modern and traditional nature. “Like much of the Flair range, Athena also offers easy-clean and stain resistant credentials, making it a purchase where style and practicality go hand in hand.” Athena ticks a host of boxes for a host of people with its suitability for the hectic family home, although this takes nothing away from its cushioning beauty. Boasting softness to compete with the best in wool or polyester, Athena is heavyweight polypropylene that plays as much on its dense pile as its varying hues. T 01457 850660 www.flairrugs.com

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. from The Stocklists

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. Flooring factsheet from Interfloor The resurgence of rubber underlay Research into consumer purchase behaviour commissioned by Interfloor in October 2015 shows more people than ever before are buying new underlay when they purchase new carpet.

Interfloor manufactures leading brands in the underlay market, Tredaire and Duralay. Recognised by customers as brands of quality and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world.

The research suggests this is in part due to improved understanding of the various products and their benefits gained through Internet research and advice from retailers’ own sales consultants. The in-store consumer experience is key to the rising conversion rates, as it gives retailers an opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of the different products on offer. Consumers want hands-on experience of quality products which offer high levels of comfort and are fit for purpose. They are less concerned about price and more interested in long-term performance and this has led to the resurgence of traditional rubber underlays such as Tredaire Colours Red, Interfloor’s premium sponge rubber underlay. Sponge rubber underlays have been around since the 1950s for very good reasons. In fact, Tredaire launched Willow Green, the UK’s first sponge rubber underlay in 1956. Sponge rubber underlays are extremely comfortable; no other underlay product produces quite the same feel underfoot. They are also exceptionally good at minimising both impact sound and airborne sound between rooms. They are incredibly flexible and cover more applications than any other underlay type, including specialist low tog underlays for underfloor heating and thin and dense underlays for hard flooring. In a Stocklist readers’ survey published in November 2015, 30% said they were selling more underlay and although 60% find it easy to sell underlay, only 50% were using POS to demonstrate its benefits – one of the key reasons customers visit retailers is to feel samples (83%) or walk on the carpet to see how it feels (26%). Interfloor offers POS items including custom-made swatch books, presentation folders and hanging samples with instore foot testers coming soon. All are designed to help retailers sell exactly the right underlay to every customer that comes to their store.

Over 80% of those who didn’t buy new underlay at the time of their carpet purchase believe that they can use their existing underlay (57%), that underlay isn’t necessary (19%) or an expensive add-on (12%) and yet underlay is a great opportunity to improve the way the consumer feels about the total purchase – and hence the retailer.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

www.floorwise.co.uk

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

www.carpenter.limited.uk

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Combination

PU foam

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Fading on Wool

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 60

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 65
