Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE The WOOLSAFE Mark has gone Green! The WOOLSAFE Organisation has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal and EcoLogo in North America, to enable those WOOLSAFE approved products that are ecologically responsible to be recognised and promoted as such.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Regular Maintenance
Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.
Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.
Periodic Cleaning
When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company.
If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approved products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package: WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
General Rules for Spot Removal • Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth
• Scoop up or scrape off solids
• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment – if unsure, use solvent first • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards • BLOT, do NOT rub
• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge
• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles • When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats
The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves. Protective treatments Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular cleaning is still required.
Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDER section.)
Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size.Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc).To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match.
For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
SHEDDING
The original carpet tile
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.
8
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
• shedding • pulled loops
SPROUTING
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
SHADING
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
STATIC
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc).
The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected.
Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair.Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.
A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
THE STOCKLISTS May 2010
• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’.This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.
The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
FLATTENING
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
SOILING
Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.
T HE R EGENCY
Collection
It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
WOVEN
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.
Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.
Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is BONDED Tip Sheared Level Loop Tip Sheared Level Loop Sheared Level Loop plain colours. a versatile, textured finish that is idealTipfor Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have not stitched into the backing in any way. Flooring factsheet Wool fibre THE BEST CARPET WOOL
Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. 100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool rich Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home. THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET
Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.
Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.
SAFE
DURABLE
Comfort Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency.
Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer. Safety Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason.
Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.
Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.
Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.
Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.
Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.floorwise.co.uk
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
Benefits
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards
How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Types
Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired

COMING SOON The machines are now rolling on the first production lines of the new colourways in Piccadilly (right) and the new Bakerloo – the latest additions to our best selling Tube Collection of stripes. We’re sure you’ll love the new plum and mulberry colourways for Piccadilly; which are also featured in the new Bakerloo line, with even more stripes! Samples of both new ranges are being distributed via our agents now. We’re also so excited about Alpine, our beautiful, sumptuous new quality in two-ply 100% New Zealand wool, which is also about to go into full production. This is the sort of carpet we like to think Edel Telenzo is all about. Unusually it’s got both cut pile and loop pile options – although the two loop piles are currently only available in cream. Of course the other colours in the cut pile option – Chamonix – are spot on with current fashion trends in neutrals: Rock (very dark grey), Bird (very dark brown), Edelweiss (taupe) and Mont Blanc (cream). We’re sure you’re going to love it.
STOP PRESS!
Pole position for F1
We’ve just taken delivery of 250 new point of sale display tombolas – so if you missed out last time or are keen to have another one, please let us know. Just to remind you, the tombola has capacity for up to 60 removable sliders holding either 45sq cm samples or two x 22.5cm x 45cm long samples – potentially 120 different qualities and/or colourways! It’s a compact unit on castors for ease of mobility and finished in a pleasing, smart combination of light oak and silver with smart branding graphics. It costs £100 – but this is refundable when you hit sales of £5,000 (net order value).
We’re looking foward to meeting the members at the Flooring One show at Cranmore Park in Solihull later this month.

Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to.
Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours.
A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line.
Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.
As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others.
the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality
Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.
Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of the product range to consumers with a market-leading modular POS system which they will deliver and design to suit your store.
Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland.

100% recycled carpet Mohawk International takes old plastic bottles and turns them into beautiful, luxurious carpet... Hard to believe we know, but a plastic bottle you drink from today could one day become fibres in Mohawk’s carpet.
Make the most of the consumer’s love of all things green with the new Environmental Tombola featuring carpet manufactured from 100% recycled material
Polyethylene terephthalate (P.E.T) is the top quality resin required in the production of plastic drinks bottles. When recycled, it can be extruded into fibres that are far superior to lower-grade synthetic virgin fibres used in making other brands of carpet yarns. Mohawk recycles over 3 billion plastic bottles each year. By controlling every aspect of “Mohawk recycles over 3 billion the recycling plastic bottles each year.” process, Mohawk guarantees the highest standards of performance in its luxurious and beautiful carpet. 85% prefer Harrogate A survey of visitors to the Harrogate event in 2009 conducted by a leading carpet manufacturer reported that 85.6% favoured Harrogate as the venue for this event - 10.2% chose NEC Birmingham and 4.1% GMEX Manchester.
More cause for celebration as other top names join our exhibitor list - Ulster, IVC, Carpenter and many more Serious industry support for the Harrogate event gets even stronger with a series of market leading companies committing to the event since our newsletter last month. Again, the new exhibitors respresent the full spectrum of the flooring industry: ETF - the carpet handling machine specialist from Europe IVC Group - one of Belgium’s largest producer of vinyl flooring Carpenter - the UK’s largest producer of underlays Saif Carpets - a specialist producer from India Blaklader - the top industrial clothing supplier Masterpiece Systems - computer and IT specialists in the sector and last but by no means least ... Ulster Carpets - one of the premier UK carpet manufacturers who we are delighted to welcome back.
An exhibitor list you can trust! Booked and confirmed – a lot of people have been concerned by exhibitor lists that may not be altogether accurate. May I say that I have been dealing with people in the Industry for many years and would only list people who have committed to us - for example, companies like Victoria and Asiatic who have both taken time to commit to their choice but are fully on board with Harrogate in September.

Solihull show builds on its success The annual Solihull show of leading buying group Flooring One is becoming a key date in the calendar for their independent retailers and is enthusiastically supported by leading manufacturers.
The ‘members-only’ event which opens on May 18 is supported by 36 manufacturers who often use the occasion to present prototypes for feedback as well as showcase new products. “It’s a very professional and well presented occasion which we look forward to,” said David Cormack of Cormar Carpets. Flooring One is part of the AIS retail buying organisation and it is their superb conference and event centre at Cranmore Park, Solihull, that hosts the show.
“We aim to put everything the independent retailer needs under one roof ” says Flooring One boss Glenn Harding. “The show is becoming increasingly successful and we get an excellent response from manufacturers who always participate at a senior level. The event underwrites the close working relationship that our members enjoy with the leading manufacturers.” Flooring One achieve a high turnout from their membership of nearly 130 members with 180 stores across the UK but, for the first time, Glenn has invited SMG and Bond Retail Marketing to invite their members to a second opening day at the event. Other buying groups have discussed this opportunity for their own members in future years, and some Metro members may well come this year.
Glenn added “We have excellent facilities here at Cranmore Park with a showroom of almost 30,000 sq feet, free parking for visitors/suppliers and superb catering. In addition to AIS member shows we are now hosting many outside functions including the National school wear show, the Midpoint show (Furniture), and the Independent Kids show (Children’s fashion).”
“It is the ideal opportunity for our members to meet the key British manufacturers that the buying groups deal with all the time,” says Chris Moffat of SMG who looks after 320 members with 380 outlets. “We are delighted that Flooring One has extended this invitation to our members. We have promoted it heavily and we have had a tremendous response from retailers to take up the invitation.”
Manufacturers have reacted enthusiastically to the extension of the event as it makes their involvement increasingly cost-effective as the audience increases – and with visitors with whom they already have well-developed relationships. This year’s participants will include Associated Weavers, Axminster, Brockway, Cormar, Furlong, Mohawk, Ryalux, Edel Telenzo, Ulster and Victoria Carpets. Key names in rugs include Asiatic, Mastercraft, Rama and Rugs with Flair. The Flooring One event takes place on May 18 and the independent retailers’ show is on 19 May – but is only open to invited members of the relevant buying groups. Profile: Associated Weavers by David Spragg
Quality beyond price In a recession, manufacturers have the option of retreating to the bunker until it’s all over or taking up the fight to turn market weakness into opportunity. The flooring sector has had many examples of both tactics in the last two years but Associated Weavers has clearly come out fighting and the battle they hope to win is market share. “Everyone knows trading is tough but we will not be driven into manufacturing volume at the expense of prices,” says AW UK head Steve Elliott,
“Quality must not be sacrificed for the sake of price as this just devalues carpet in the eyes of the consumer. Our key objective is to gain market share for affordable quality carpet,” he says.
The strategy that sets Associated Weavers apart in this battle is their willingness to experiment and innovate while playing to their main strengths. “Product development, design and the invention of new ranges is the only way to stop price being the primary factor,” says Steve. AW manufactures all its own products and the UK represents some 45% of the market for its factories in Belgium. The company has 30 people working in the UK, based at its offices in Halifax.
The product development strategy has seen AW’s portfolio enhanced with both new ranges and clever extensions to established best-sellers. Highly successful recent introductions include Tuftex Twist, a heather effect 100% polypropylene carpet which had a “phenomenal response” according to AW marketing manager David Funk. Everest Twist was another newcomer which included a range of adventurous colours to attract attention as well as a 5-metre option
Strong colours are also a feature of Simply Stunning, a new range being introduced now. “We have paid more attention to design and colour and added to a popular range of natural earth tones with more fashion oriented, vibrant tones,” says Steve. Soft plum, aubergine, light blue and dark pink are proving increasingly popular as well as the continued success of black and dark greys for younger consumers.
There has been a lot of promotion around the newly launched Crossland Berber and it’s sister product Country Berber which will be introduced later this month together with York Twist.
AW flagships such as Stainaway Harvest Heathers and the heavier weight Staingard Harvest Heathers have continued to be strong sellers
Country Berber is among a host of 2010 newcomers
in the tougher trading conditions with retailers selling the safety of the new 10-year wear guarantee and 10 year stainaway warranty - and one of the oldest favourites, California Dreams is getting a new set of colourways. On the wool front, AW have just added the soft-feel Cashmere Berber to the established 80/20 favourites including High Point and Park Lane. Retailers will see some of the differences in store as AW rolls out high quality lecterns to support core ranges this summer. “There is a lot going on and we’re making a little more noise about it. We take success for our company and our retailers very seriously,” says Steve. T 01422 431100 www.awe.be

Coming unstuck with technology In principle, removing a glued floor covering is a rather simple job. However, whether this job actually proves to be simple in practice, depends on selecting the “proper” machine for one part and – rather essentially – the proper tool for the other.
WOLFF, a leader in developing and manufacturing stripper-machines has incorporated the ultimate level of quality and innovation of the new WOLFF class during the last two years. A series of machines - TurboExtro- Vario- or Duro-Stripper - all boast technical improvement alongside optimized design. The best known member of the WOLFF-class is the Turbo Stripper.
The most appreciated features of the machine are: height-adjustable handle, weight can be increased to 247 kg with weight blocks of 30 kg each, individual weight shifting, at 3 positions, improved handling characteristics variable working width 150 – 350 mm.The turbo stripper works with impact system technology. Growth returns to flooring sector In encouraging news for the UK Floor Coverings industry, 220 of the top 1000 companies in the market are growing at more than 10% per annum and making healthy profits. However, according to industry analysts Plimsoll, while many of these companies are breaking new ground and leading a sustainable recovery in the market, there are 97 other companies whose headline grabbing sales growth masks something much more sinister. David Pattison, senior analyst and author of the new Plimsoll Analysis explains, “Firstly, it makes a nice change to have some positive news to report. 220 growing, increasingly profitable companies have either tapped into a new, fast growing revenue streams or are just the best performers in the old ones. Anyone struggling to make the most of the recovery should look at these companies and ask themselves ‘what do these guys sell, make or do differently to me?’” However, Pattison warns that there are 97 companies achieving this eye catching sales growth but their profitability tells a very different story, “Essentially there are 2 types of growth in the market – Good v Bad. 97 companies have achieved over the 10% sales growth but in doing so have seen their profit margin collapse. They are simply overtrading. The accolades of growth are all well and good but the bills need paying too. More worrying, 9 of these companies have been loss making for 2 years – even with double digit sales growth I doubt they will make it to a third”. On the subject of companies getting it wrong at both ends of the scale, Pattison offers this warning, “While the market continues to recover and the 220 top performers show the way, there are 177 companies facing a very bleak future indeed. Losing sales, profits and probably most of their remaining options, these companies have been rated as Danger in our report.Time is running out and only a takeover or a rapid turnaround is likely to redeem their situation”. Set for third year of ‘Fun’ Fun On The Floor is setting out its third year of campaigning for carpet with exciting plans to reach consumer audiences throughout 2010 - with strong, continuing support from the flooring industry. “We have seen a great response to our initiatives in the last two years and are ready to build on that success,” says one of the key co-ordinators,Tony Judge of Headlam. With a mission to ‘get carpet noticed’, the Fun On The Floor team will be commissioning a promotional programme that covers advertising, consumer press PR, online and retailer activities. The web is going to play a bigger role in reaching consumers and the online Ask The Experts service will be strengthened following its successful launch last year. “We have been very pleased with the hits on the website for this service from the public and we have some exciting plans to develop it further,” said Tony, who hinted at a major celebrity signing to the expert panel which already includes design gurus Danielle Proud, Andrea Maflin and Victoria Redshaw with industry input from Associated Weavers’ Steve Elliott. A new initiative is a voucher scheme which consumers will be able to download with a list of their six nearest retailers to take advantage of offers and free services such as measuring, estimating and advice. “Consumers need to understand just how much they can get from a quality flooring retailer,” says Tony. Later in the year, planning will start for an Autumn advertising campaign to prompt carpet sales in the run up to Christmas. Fun On The Floor is supported by an industry consortium of leading carpet manufacturers such as Abingdon, AW, Balta, Brockway, Cormar and the Headlam Group plus Carpetright. A full report of the Fun On The Floor campaign plans will appear in the next issue of The Stocklists. www.funonthefloor.com

The Wool Benefits Series from Wools of New Zealand
Natural Health. Wool carpets ensure an exceptionally safe and healthy indoor environment through the wool fibre s natural properties. Among these are inherent fire resistance, air purification and moisture control. Furthermore, the wool fibre is non-allergenic, does not promote the growth of bacteria, dust mites or give off harmful emissions.
Wool is Saf e
Wool is Purifying
Anti-Slip Wool carpet isn’t just slip-resistant but comfortable to walk and stand on. In addition wool’s unique structure and resilience provide the support and confidence necessary to maintain balance and coordination.
Natural Filter Wool acts as a natural filter, trapping particles such as dust and pollen, thus preventing respiratory problems. It also captures many of the common pollutant gases associated with the home, neutralising and binding them irreversibly in its structure.
Statistics show that over 40% of injuries occur in and around the home. A New Zealand wool carpet can help ensure your family’s health and safety in the following ways:
Cushioning for falls Slips and stumbles are less likely with a wool carpet underfoot. However should one occur, the natural softness and resilience of the pile will cushion the fall. Fire Safety Wool offers valuable insurance for any interior. Naturally resistant to burning, wool’s high protein and moisture content make it difficult to set alight. Compared to synthetics, wool’s inherently low smoke emissions and low flame spread mean that it does not create such dangerous levels of carbon monoxide and other toxic fumes. Static Resistan t Experiencing a small, annoying “electric shock” when opening the door to get out of your car or when you touch the filing cabinet in your office is the result of the discharge of static electricity. The natural moisture in wool carpet prevents the build-up of static, hence avoiding unpleasant shocks. Wool carpets with added static resistant materials are excellent for locations housing electronic equipment such as computers.
Scientific evidence shows that wool can absorb indoor contaminants and purify the air of harmful gases, such as formaldehyde.
Humidity Moderating Wool’s unique structure makes it a natural moisture buffer absorbing up to one third of its own weight in water vapour without feeling damp. Activities such as showering, cooking or laundry can cause sudden peaks of humidity in your home. Wool absorbs and stores this excess moisture, thus reducing condensation that can cause mould and respiratory problems. Temperature Moderating Scientific studies have identified indoor thermal comfort as a major factor in cardiovascular and respiratory problems. Wool is a natural insulator - in winter, wool feels warm and soft; in summer, wool carpets reduce heat rising through the floor, creating a cool and a comfortable environment.
Healthy Posture Good posture is essential to maintaining good health and physical wellbeing. The soft, resilient pile of a wool carpet cushions your body as the fibre’s natural crimp coils and uncoils - like millions of miniature springs.
Allergy Friendly Wool is naturally non-allergenic and does not provide nutrients for bacteria or dust mites, nor does it promote the growth of moulds. A wool carpet acts as a natural filter keeping dust and allergens out of the breathing zone so that they cannot enter or irritate the respiratory system.
Health and Hygiene for Babies Wool carpet is a naturally soft surface to play and crawl on and will keep your baby safe. It is also naturally hygienic because the outer layer of the fibre makes it difficult for microbes to rest and multiply. The wool fibre traps bacteria and allergens, keeping them within the carpet pile and out of the air that your baby is breathing.

OF THE TRADE
Ian Hammond
Sales Director UK, Vorwerk Carpets
For us at Vorwerk Carpets it really comes down to convincing retailers and consumers that there are serious alternatives to wool. Of course, we have wool carpets in our line up, but we predominantly use advanced nylon fibres, which we believe offer superior levels of appearance retention, cleanability and softness. Convincing people that there is a good alternative to wool is no easy task. Is price winning over design/quality?
That very much depends on the market you operate in.Vorwerk Carpets operate in a segment where design and quality will always win through. We are in the domain of independent retailers and high end department stores, not the industrial estate.
What’s the next big thing – in terms of design, colour and texture?
Interior fashion is leaning towards bold prints, patchwork quilts and bringing fun back into our homes. In a restrained form this will be reflected in carpets and we are certainly seeing a move towards big statements, both in texture and colour. Shaggy styles have been around for a while, but we are seeing this develop with a mix of thick and thin yarns, varying heights and different lustre. Colours too are certainly more vibrant. Which product or product type is past its sell-by date now do you think? I would love to say wood flooring or wool carpets, but it would seem that in our sector of the market uninteresting carpets are having a tough time. Consumers are now looking for far more than just a conventional natural coloured loop pile.Velours and saxonies in strong shades, chunky loops, shaggies and patterns are ruling the roost.
How relevant is it for a manufacturer to work with a leading designer? In terms of commercial flooring, it can add kudos and bring fresh incentive to the design process, but for residential carpet the story is very different. Designer collaborations bring little to the design process, as they investment means they need to be good selling ranges. For marketing purposes, I would say it’s a good thing, but for the development of carpet design in the residential market, they bring little to the table. That is of course unless a designer is given free rein, such as in our high-end Ulf Moritz collection. What’s the single most important key to success in flooring? Sticking by your business model and having faith, hence developing products that you believe in.
Do you agree there are too many people making carpet right now? Competition is a good thing as it keeps you on your toes. That said we are in a unique position at Vorwerk Carpets as we offer something different to a lot of manufacturers. For retailers looking for something really different, we are one of a handful on offer. Our unique product mix perhaps sets us even further apart.

“Interior fashion is leaning towards bold prints, patchwork quilts and bringing fun back into our homes. In a restrained form this will be reflected in carpets and we are certainly seeing a move towards big statements, both in texture and colour.” Do you think that consumers are prepared to pay extra to protect the environment? In the commercial sector it’s a definite yes, but I don’t think that residential carpet is at that point yet. Its going to be a while before people will pay a premium for a carpet that offers the same colour and texture as a counterpart, but that has better environmental credentials.
How important are effective point-of-sale displays to the sales process? For us as a relatively unknown manufacturer, but with exclusive products, it’s very important to have good retail POS.We have to communicate our brand and USPs of our carpets quickly, while inspiring consumers to look at our carpets as a real opportunity to change their home – hence our premium display tower.
“
“
What is the key market issue/challenge today?
What’s your favourite flooring product? I’m afraid It has to be from the commercial arena and its one of ours. The Hadi Teherani designed SCALE collection is changing the way designers think about flooring thanks to carpet tiles that aren’t square. They can be used to interpret floor spaces in a fresh way and don’t follow the convention of wall-to-wall carpeting. In all your time in the trade, what has most surprised you? That leading Axminster producers, particularly in the UK but also elsewhere, failed to recognise the potential of Colortec technology and to adopt it. It now threatens to take over the patterned carpet market for wool in the leisure sector and will eventually consign most Axminster looms to museums.
And most disappointed you? The closure of leading brands in the UK carpet manufacturing business has been a tragedy for the industry. Even those companies that are left have had to face the closure of UK plants and rely on sourcing from overseas countries, rather than developing their own new technologies to make new styles of carpet or to produce carpets economically, retaining the skills and production within the UK. If you didn’t work in the industry, what would have been your second choice career? I have always enjoyed working outside and would have wished to become a landscape gardener.

High street giants Marks and Spencer, John Lewis, Debenhams and Tesco have all pledged their involvement in HRH The Prince of Wales’ Campaign for Wool (CfW) as have leading brands Burberry, Aquascutum and the elite of tailors Savile Row along with many others. Launched in January by the Prince, it is his initiative to bring the natural and sustainable attributes of wool to the attention of textile buyers, retailers and ultimately the consumer. The British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB) has been involved in this campaign from the start, working in a massive cross industry endeavor to refocus the retailer and consumer’s interest in wool. HRH The Prince of “It is the BWMB’s belief, Wales who is patron of that this patronage of the the Campaign for Wool.
British Wool in demand as interest grows
Sales of British Wool in the beginning part of the year have reflected a surge in interest in the fibre. The auctions, which are held fortnightly in Bradford, have seen very brisk bidding for wool across all wool types resulting in complete clearance at the sales. “There is a global fall in the supply of wool and there is a real boom in wool at the moment, the environment is part of that but we hear from spinners that there is a lot of new interest," said Ian Hartley, CEO of the BWMB.”

Prince will make a significant difference to the ability of wool to be noticed by major retailers and brands and that is why we have given it our wholehearted support,” said Ian Hartley, chief executive of the BWMB. The Prince’s interest in wool originated in discussions with tenants on his estate who outlined the poor return for the shorn fleece. He explained clearly the issues faced by sheep farmers that make little or no money from wool when their shearing costs are often more than the price they get for their wool. He commented that, “The future of the fibre was looking very bleak indeed. The sad truth is that around the world farmers are leaving sheep production because the price they get for their wool is below the costs of actually shearing it.” The first part of the campaign will be a ‘Wool Week’ which will be in October (w/c11th October) and will be a major push for wool with instore retailer promotions. Mr Hartley said: “We hope that any store selling wool will support Wool Week by profiling wool carpet and promoting it strongly to support the campaign for Wool. There is a unique logo which has been devised for it and this will be available soon to use in store.” “This is a hugely important project for our wool producers. We need to change consumer perceptions and make wool better understood and also make it fashionable again. This is a truly fabulous opportunity for the retail world and we are right behind it.”
Campaign for wool chooses new logo
A logo has now been chosen for HRH The Princes of Wales’ Campaign for Wool (CfW) and will soon be available to be used by retailers and manufacturers that want to use it in their Wool Week promotions to help highlight their wool product. The sheep – a perfect icon for wool takes centre stage in the CfW logo and will be used on swing tickets and point of sale alongside a newly refreshed woolmark logo which is one of the most recognized global brands to help reinforce the fibre as wool/wool rich. “The decision to highlight the fibre using the woolmark does not remove profile from the Shepherd’s Crook mark – our brand clearly defines the origin and content level of the fibre as British Wool, which is particularly important for carpets because British Wool is a superior carpet fibre for flooring,” explained Tim Booth of the BWMB. Retailers that wish to support the Prince’s Campaign for Wool will be contacted by the Carpet Foundation or if not a CF member and wish to be involved they should e-mail: marketing@britishwool.org.uk

Get on board with F. Ball F. Ball and Co. Ltd’s range of marine approved Stopgap subfloor preparation products and Styccobond flooring adhesives have been used to repair and upgrade the decks on board the global cruise ship, MV Discovery. F. Ball’s products provided the reassurance of IMO marine certification, as well as proven high levels of performance.
Built in 1972, MV Discovery last underwent a major refit in 2003. As part of the current refurbishment programme, 3,400m2 of floors in the ship’s public areas and 300 cabins were upgraded. Areas demanding particular attention during the refurbishment of older vessels, such as the MV Discovery, are the decks. The impact of movement and vibration of the ship’s structure, as well as frequent foot traffic, while sailing the heavy seas, caused the subfloor above the steel deck to crack and even crumble in some areas of the ship. In the most badly affected areas of the subfloor, this had created holes up to 35mm deep.To repair the damaged areas, specialist flooring contractor, team-marine, installed Stopgap 1050 Lite smoothing underlayment to level irregularities within the surface. A lightweight, fibre reinforced system, Stopgap 1050 Lite is ideal for levelling floors where structural loadings need to be considered. Designed to offer significant weight savings, it has a cured density of 1050kg/m2, which is typically half that of a conventional smoothing underlayment. Its lightweight properties also facilitate ease of manual handling, a particular benefit for multi-level sites where access is difficult, such as the MV Discovery, which features eight decks.
To create a smooth surface for the new floorcoverings, a second smoothing underlayment was installed across the entire subfloor, which was first primed using Stopgap P131. A generalpurpose neoprene primer, Stopgap P131 prevents smoothing underlayments drying out too rapidly and promotes their adhesion to the subfloor. Stopgap Blue Bag 114 floor smoothing underlayment provided excellent self-smoothing properties. Specifically formulated to avoid the need for the natural rubber latex content, Stopgap Blue Bag 114 offered the additional benefits of being low odour and protein free, making it ideal for hygienically and clinically sensitive public areas of the ship, such as the restaurants, medical centre and health and fitness centre. Good news for exhibitors and delegates of the Harrogate Flooring Show: the venue, Harrogate International Centre (HIC) has just received the go ahead for the last pieces of work on its £13m redevelopment scheme. Approved elements include the application for two new halls, which jointly add 3,400 sqm of quality flexible event space to the venue, a stunning new entrance, and the associated development of a 107-bed lodge hotel by Puma Hotels, which will have direct access to the HIC. Work on the above will start later this year and is due to be completed in autumn 2011. David Wildman, organiser of the Harrogate Flooring Show which takes place at the HIC between 5-7 September 2010, says: “This year it is exciting enough to be launching the new show at HIC, but this ongoing programme of improvements at the venue mean we all have something to look forward to as the show develops and evolves in future years.” T 01423 779967 www.harrogateflooringshow.net

National Floor Show
NEC looks to long-term growth National Floor Show 2010 has confirmed several new exhibitors for the Birmingham show in September with Azco Interiors, Accu-cut, Brockway Carpets, Crucial Trading, Unifloor and World Wide Fund for Nature having all recently signed up. The very best of each sector of the flooring industry will be on show at the event to provide visitors with a real range of quality offerings.
Unifloor commented: “We will be exhibiting at National Floor Show as we feel this show is more geared towards a project orientated market. Based on the exhibitors signed and how the show is being promoted, it is clear this is a more commercial event – which is important for Unifloor. New builds are at a stand still, but renovations have increased so we are looking to meet architects and specifiers, among others, at the show. The NEC is an easily accessible location”. WWF will be on hand to explain the benefits of sourcing products responsibly and what manufacturers, specifiers, architects, interior designers, and anyone else involved in the production or sourcing of flooring products will have to consider environmentally in the future.
Kathryn James, Managing Director of The NEC, confirmed their longterm support of the show: “National Floor Show 2009 attracted over 3,000 visitors, 11% of who came from overseas, so The NEC’s central location within the UK and direct links to Birmingham International Railway station and Airport means that we can welcome these visitors direct to the venue. “Interiors and kbb Birmingham have enjoyed some very successful events at The NEC, and we are now looking forward to working with UBM to develop a truly national and international event that we hope will see substantial growth in the coming years.”
Floorsites
UBM Portfolio Director Andrew Vaughan, commented: “Having worked with The NEC successfully for many years, we’re looking forward to seeing the new-look National Floor Show in a world-class venue. “The fact we already have backing from the industry’s main buying groups leaves us with no doubt that we can deliver a bigger and better event in this new location. In these difficult times the opportunity to increase business and meet new clients is paramount.
“The NEC gives us the chance to offer fresh and innovative content, such as the Seminar Theatre and the student’s ‘Future of Flooring’ display, which is crucial to the longevity of the event. I’m sure that the industry is curious to see the new look National Floor Show!”
UBM have told potential exhibitors that they will be targetting 47,738 flooring contacts from their database of interiors and related industries to maximise the audience for the Birmingham event. Speaking up for bespoke The ability to offer custom-made product to customers can provide an extra dimension to the sale o f flooring product, moving away from price-oriented discussions. The UK is fortunate to be able to source bespoke flooring from a number of well-established and reputable manufacturers. Brontë promote any colour in any width
“People are placing more and more importance on having unique possessions that really reflect their individual style and taste” Concept Handtufting has found that order numbers have almost doubled in the last three years for its bespoke carpet service. ‘In so many aspects of life, people are placing more and more importance on having unique possessions that really reflect their individual style and taste. It follows naturally that this desire extends towards the home itself,’ said Ellie Lawton, sales and marketing coordinator.
The company works closely with interior designers offering turnkey services.‘Designers are responding very positively to the opportunity of having control over every aspect of the flooring specification and being able to source a product which works perfectly with their scheme.Whereas previously they have often had to settle for something that is “close enough”, now they can get creative and order something that is truly one of a kind,’ said Lawton. Concept Handtufting has doubled orders
Brontë Carpets, for example, was established in 1982 and continues to produce high quality custom-made carpets in its Lancashire factory. It uses 100% pure new wool and 80/20 wool/nylon carpets made to any colour, using its special dye service, and in any width up to 12m including T and L shapes, etc. It finds that velvet pile carpets are popular at the moment, due to the mix of luxury feel with hard wearing practicality. The company reports it has invested in two new machines that will enable it to further extend its existing range of qualities. Brontë has heard increasingly more retailers express concerns about security of orders and deposits and states that it allays these fears through its Credit Safe rating of 'very good'. Kevin Beasant, Lano Carpets contract sales manager, said: 'There is no doubt that as costs have decreased, bespoke carpeting has found increasing favour, allowing clients to put their own unique spin into the floor. However, it is still clear that in many projects timescales are still vital and so specifiers are increasingly turning to design libraries and semi-bespoke concepts such as our Walk of Fame II collection.' This includes 16 colours permanently creeled and ‘ready to go’, which can be fine-tuned by choosing from the 16 available colours, creating a unique carpet quickly and efficiently. 'Of course, Lano Flooring Solutions offer fully bespoke services and many clients choose to go down this route, calling upon the skills of our in-house designers to create truly unique carpets. But for those on a more restrictive budget or where time is of the essence, then our semi-bespoke carpets are the perfect answer,' said Beasant.

Signature Carpets states that it employs designers who draw and paint carpet designs by hand to present truly bespoke carpet and rug proposals for individually designed interiors. Its commissions include replicating styles for stately rooms and producing innovative ideas for contemporary residential projects. It finds demand stems from desire to buck the trend or emulate a past style, or the need to find an elusive extra touch. The company finds clients are seeking increased luxury and quality, frequently including subtle decorative designs, textural variation or rich, sophisticated shades.
Trendy Tuft draws on its 25 year experience to offer a service ranging from design concept to fitting. Using high quality pure new wools, the company stated its carpets and rugs are made to any shape, width or quality, specialising in outsize products for most domestic or contract applications. It employs hand tufters and also uses a CAD machine for one-offs or repeats. Seamless carpets of any width, inlaid with custom borders or plain hand carved in any colour, are available. The company finds that more customers are seeking quality and accountability in their

choice of manufacturer and the traceability of a low carbon footprint. It further stated that in addition to various pile surface and yarn effects using velvet or twist (frieze) yarns, two pile heights, cut and/or loop pile, carved designs, company logos, etc, the latest trend is for carpets made from silk and lambswool/mohair blends.
Victoria Carpets is another well-established supplier of bespoke carpet, with commissions including royal homes and palaces, as well as many other types of instalation. It finds having its own spinning mill helps greatly with this. Most of its orders are produced on three types of machines, the company said. For tufted products, the graphics and multi-roll loop machines are mainly used to produce small geometric designs in two or more colourways, incorporating multi-pile height products in 100% wool with numerous colours that can also be tip-sheared. Styles including velvets, twists, loops, cut and loops and Jacquard Brussels can be produced in wilton. It can produce up to a four coloured design in the latter style and in 3.66m wide, the company stated.
Whitestone Weavers Phil Hartley said: 'Many consumers are now searching for a more customised look in their homes. With the introduction of bespoke carpet options within retailer outlets, many are opting for a more personalised feel. With ranges such as our Fastrack offer, our retailers have realised that they can easily offer a bespoke service.' The Fastrack range is available in around four weeks and has a minimum order quantity of only 20sqm, he said. It includes a range of styles from classical and traditional through to the contemporary designs and consists of four separate colour palettes:
Standard,Tones, Spectrum and Naturals are available in 4m widths in a total of nine different qualities. 'It’s the most advanced, flexible and competitive bespoke Axminster in the market place, suitable for home use and soft contract installations,' Hartley concluded.

Green is still an unfashionable colour Consumers would rather save money than save the planet, say retailers. The great green debate is still failing to make a major impact on the High Street with respondents to our survey on environmental issues. Consumers aren’t really interested it is claimed – and therefore retailers aren’t too enthused either. While over 54% of respondents said that they felt the industry had responded quite well to the environmental challenge, more than 45% said they felt the response was just ‘lip service’.
Recycling is a key activity in the green crusade and while there was unanimous support for the increase in recycling activities, 41% of retailers said that their support was dependent on it not costing more.
One retailer in the South West commented: “End of life carpet is a problem that won’t go away. The industry needs to finance a recycling process because the government won't - they are only prepared to collect landfill tax. It is possible to recycle effectively but we need action not words.”
Some manufacturers maintain that good environmental credentials also have excellent economics – most notably with reduced energy costs – but only 25% of respondents thought that environmental management could save money. The great majority at 58% felt that green cost more.
“End of life carpet is a problem that won’t go away.” “The earth is not ours - we are only looking after it for our children.”
A key area of questioning in our survey focussed on how retailers felt their customers responded to environmental issues as a product benefit. A massive 74% of respondents said that their customer never or almost never asked about the environmental credentials of a flooring product – and about half of retailers admitted they never raised the issue with another third saying that they discussed the topic only occasionally. When asked to rank product benefits in the selling process, product appearance and price came out equal top as key motivators while green credentials scored just 16% on this scale.
The bottom line is that retailers felt that consumers were not interested in paying more to save the planet – 67% said consumers were not prepared to pay a premium for environmentally friendly products in the current market conditions. Retailers aren’t keen to pay more either. “It will always cost more - when I see manufacturers making more of an effort then so will I,” said a retailer in Cambridgeshire.
As a side issue, we asked about synthetic fibres – curious to know if increased environmental awareness was putting people off these products in favour of the natural alternatives. The answer was loud and clear –just over 75% of respondents said there had been no impact on made-made fibres.

retailers respond to industry issues And two-third of retailers believed that products imported from outside the EU were ‘getting away’ with lower environmental standards.
Given that the survey appears to demonstrate a general antipathy towards the green agenda by both retailers and their customers we wondered if there was a feeling that the industry was banging on too much about saving the planet. This section of the survey elicited some mixed signals… The audience was split more or less 50/50 when asked if manufacturers were focussing too much ‘green-washing’ their promotions. But there was an emphatic demand from retailers for more information – more than 90% of respondents said they did not receive sufficient information from manufacturers and 83% said flooring products should be better labelled to explain their environmental credentials.
“The earth is not ours - we are only looking after it for our children,” said a North East retailer. “Only Heuga stand out as being environmentally aware. We can all do a little bit to help save the planet. On a local level we recycle when we can, use previously owned and fuel efficient vehicles, switch off lights when nobody is in the showroom - it saves electricity and saves us money too!!”
