THE STOCKLISTS November 2015

Exciting times at Edel Telenzo On September 29, the Dutch private equity firm O2 Capital Partners acquired Edel International, including the UK business Edel Telenzo Carpets Ltd. This is an extremely positive development and with the help of O2 Capital Partners, Edel will be able to realise its ambitions to grow further, in line with the company’s ambitions and future strategy. So after almost 100 years, the De Lange family has officially relinquished ownership of the firm, which was founded in 1918 by Mr K. de Lange in Genemuiden (Netherlands). Over this period, the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Mr de Lange have built the company up, to become a financially sound and flourishing carpet producing company with a focus on mid and high end markets in Europe and in several additional markets around the world. The takeover has no negative consequences for employees. It encompasses all business units of Edel International, trading under the Edel Group and Edel Telenzo brands. The Management Team stays on, both in the Netherlands and the UK, and the company’s strategy that has been laid out over recent years will continue to be executed according to plan, now likely at an accelerated pace. O2 Capital Partners are a privately owned equity company with a focus on and experience in the various manufacturing industries in Europe. O2 Capital Partners contribute to sustainable value creation and solid business management. They make commitments for the long term and are not “exit-driven”. Phil Hartley, MD Edel Telenzo: “We are very pleased and positive with the take-over by O2 Capital Partners. They bring with them not only increased investment potential, but also extensive knowledge and experience in manufacturing businesses globally. This will help in our realising our ambitions to reach our full potential. As in the past, we remain committed to our customers and we aim to continue to deliver the highest quality products and service in the years ahead.”

Carpet&FlooringReview Rockerfeller rugs

Louis de Poortere has introduced its latest in innovative rug design with the vintage 60s-inspired Mad Men, the collection debuting at this year’s 100% Design in London.

A statement range featuring designs inspired by the Mad Men of Manhattan, the golden boys of the 60’s responsible for some of America’s most recognisable brand images, these are contemporary looks for the bold and daring individual. A typical de Poortere move unafraid to explore the left field, this zany style is woven onto Jacquard Wilton looms in a combination of high gloss polyester and cotton chenille. This is a vibrant mixture of straight and broken lines, dull and shiny yarns, and smooth and rugged pencil strokes, all geared towards creating something unique for stunning design-led interiors. A choice from Mad Men’s Skyscraper, Jacob’s Ladder, Herringbone or Griff designs ensures the end user is gaining a piece unlike anything produced by Louis de Poortere before. Skyscraper plays on the straight lines of the late 50’s and early 60’s, the cool colours of the day offset by the rich shades of night, captured in the shine of urban office windows. Contrastingly, Jacob’s ladder takes a deeper turn, displaying the uneasy yet exhilarating climb up the social ladder, a tricky task despite the presence of glittering rungs and the chase for ‘more’, ‘better’, ‘richer’, ‘higher’. Herringbone champions simplicity and has its roots in more traditional rug design, these geometric weaves comprising bicolour patterns representative of contrasts in communities, struggles felt not just in the times of the Mad Men but also through to modern day society. Finally, the feeling of disorder and rift is taken to new levels with the energetic 60’s-style action painting as displayed through Griff.

Lano’s luxury lifestyle

Empire Red, Broadway Glitter, Brooklyn Blue and Columbus Gold are just some of the hues on offer from the eclectic Mad Men collection, these colours woven into only the finest materials and one of this year’s major talking points at 100% Design. T 01505 615663 www.louisdepoortere.com

Encapsulating the aspiration and desire of luxury lifestyle brands, A Taste of Luxury is the new concept in top-end carpet retailing from Lano Carpets. Bringing together SmartStrand, SmartStrand Silk, wool, bamboo and polyamide collections, the new concept redefines the manufacturer’s premium carpet, presenting a sophisticated new look that is destined to attract aspirational buyers. “We’ve reworked our luxury carpet collection to be more reflective of current and predicted buying trends,” comments Birger Karlsson, UK and Ireland Sales Director. “Where once wool dominated the premium sector, a new generation of buyers are seeing the benefits of alternatives, particularly with the growing desire for super-soft faux-silk qualities, of which A Taste of Luxury features many.” These novel looks and sophisticated on-trend colour palettes are presented in SmartStrand and SmartStrand Silk carpets such as Freedom, Velvet Dream and Beauty, Bella Donna and Gentle Bliss for a formidable collection ready to take the market by storm. Equally as important for this collection though is the attention placed on presentation, with two pointof-sale concepts placing the emphasis on a luxurious lifestyle. “A Taste of Luxury defines our premium carpets and so it is only natural that the point-of-sale evokes a feeling of luxury so we’ve sought inspiration from designer fashion to create a truly stunning look and feel that complements the collections perfectly,” continues Birger. “With a look that is elegant and beautifully sophisticated, A Taste of Luxury represents a new way of thinking about carpet and how it can be presented to make it a highly desirable home lifestyle purchase.” T 00800 5266 5266 from The Stocklists

Futuristic flooring

A range of F. Ball adhesives and floor preparation products have been used to refurbish futuristic reception areas and demonstration suites, in record time, at a stylish software house in Middlesex. Stopgap 700 Superflex smoothing underlayment, Stopgap 500 Micro floor finishing compound and Styccobond F61 heavy duty contact adhesive were used by Brajeff Flooring contractors to deliver a lasting, professional floor finish at the 450m2 software house. Newly installed raised access panels across the site were overlaid by contractors with 12mm plywood, screwed and fixed securely to the subfloor. The plywood was primed with Stopgap P131 Primer, prior to the application of a 3mm coat of Stopgap 700 Superflex smoothing underlayment. Stopgap 700 is a fibre-reinforced underlayment that has been specially developed for use over substrates such as steel and plywood, which may be subject to movement. It allows resilient floorcoverings to be installed in as little as three hours, making it ideal for fast-track installations and minimising downtime. Stopgap 500 Micro floor finishing compound was then applied to a feathered edge to fill the joints between the newly applied Stopgap 700 and an adjacent, sound plywood subfloor. Stopgap 500 is a rapid drying floor finishing compound designed for micro-coat application prior to the installation of new floorcoverings. Brajeff Flooring contractors cut Noraplan Uni 2mm rubber sheet into custom shaped tiles to create a pattern across the reception area. The tiles were adhered with Styccobond F61 heavy duty contact adhesive, a fast drying adhesive that creates an instant bond that is also ideal for vertical applications. The pattern of tiles was secured to the subfloor of the reception area and continued up a ribbon-shaped vertical feature, inset with computer monitors used to display software to clients. Hannover ahead for 2016

The Domotex 2016 exhibiiton in Hannover is shaping up nicely. Opening day is still a whole four months away, but there are already very clear indications that the world’s leading trade show for carpets and floor coverings will enjoy a particularly strong and international industry turnout. “The response from the market has been extremely positive,” commented Dr. Jochen Köckler, of Domotex. “The show is already almost fully booked.” In terms of numbers, Domotex 2016, which runs from 16 to 19 January, is expected to feature some 1,400 exhibitors from more than 60 countries.

Domotex will get the year off to a strong start with a shot of new ideas and business leads and provide an exciting, vibrant overview of all the new season’s carpet and flooring trends and innovations. World-leading providers of floor coverings will use the show as a springboard for their new products and collections. “About 85% of the show’s exhibitors will be from outside Germany. They are taking part in Domotex 2016 in order to tap into new export markets,” Köckler said. After Germany, the biggest exhibiting nations in terms of leased space are Turkey, India, Belgium, China, the Netherlands and Iran. Spread across 12 exhibition halls, the upcoming Domotex will feature a uniquely rich and diverse array of products and materials – an absolute bonanza for trade visitors from the flooring wholesale and retail sectors, architecture, interior design, the skilled flooring trades and the furniture and interior furnishings retail and wholesale sectors. The show’s product lineup encompasses textile and resilient floor coverings for the residential and contract furnishing sectors, machine-woven and hand-made carpets and rugs, parquet and laminate flooring and outdoor flooring solutions. The power of the new is writ large at Domotex, thanks to Innovations@DOMOTEX, a special showcase that gives visitors a quick, concentrated overview of the best and most exciting innovations and trends in flooring. www.domotex.de

Shape of success

The “Elementary Shapes” carpet tiles from Vorwerk, designed by Werner Aisslinger, can be thought of as a new module for individually configurable area rugs.

The “Mito” and “Leaf ” variants exhibit organic, geometric shapes. On the reverse side, the individual tiles are fitted with a non-slip backing, resulting in handmade, one-of-a-kind tiles which are unique in shape, color and material. These carpet collages add a homey touch to commercial properties. The new Vorwerk collection was put to good use via a public presentation of the Elementary Shapes carpet tiles from January to June 2015. Curated by René Spitz, the “System Design. Over 100 Years of Everyday Chaos.” exhibition at the Cologne Museum of Applied Arts (MAKK) made use of the tiles to mark off waiting areas and define special zones. The free-form tiles – in the colors of curry yellow, aquamarine and grey – helped visitors differentiate between three different color-coded tours. “Each visitor can find his or her own way, with the colors serving as an orientation aid, even at a greater distance,” explained Anke Landsberg, the person in charge of the interior design concepts at the exhibition. She added that “the carpet tiles make the big MAKK hall particularly inviting, all the more so since you can see the whole layout from above.” Without being part of the actual exhibition, the carpet tiles skillfully reflected the exhibition theme. Their easy combinability, graphic composition and mix of materials helped underscore the “systems” motif of the exhibition. The Elementary Shapes free-form carpet tiles from Vorwerk captured an award in the Innovations@DOMOTEX category of Carpeting, Fibers and Yarn at Domotex 2015. T 01282 332 025 www.vorwerk-carpets.com

NEWS New future for Edel Telenzo Edel Telenzo has been acquired by a Dutch private equity company ending almost 100 years of familiy ownership.

“We are very pleased and positive with the take-over by O2 Capital Partners,” said Phil Hartley, MD Edel Telenzo.

Banking on F. Ball

High performance smoothing underlayments and adhesives from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used in the refurbishment of a branch of Rabobank, in Langedijk, North Holland. Stopgap P131 general purpose primer, Stopgap 300 HD heavy-duty floor smoothing underlayment and Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive were used to provide a durable and aesthetically pleasing floor finish for the well known bank.

After removing existing PVC floorcoverings, contractors from Rocco de Vries Woning en Projectstoffering sanded down adhesive residues to provide a sound base, free from contamination. After checking that the sand/cement subfloor was dry enough to proceed, Stopgap P131 primer was applied to promote adhesion and prevent unacceptable rapid drying of the smoothing underlayment. Stopgap 300 HD was applied by trowel at a 3mm thickness to the 250m² area. Stopgap 300 HD is a fast drying, self-levelling smoothing underlayment, suitable for use in light to heavy-duty areas prior to the installation of new floorcoverings. The heavy-duty smoothing underlayment will accommodate the expected high level of daily footfall of customers and staff at the bank. Styccobond F44 was then used to adhere Leoxx Expona and 2Tec2 durable PVC floorcoverings to the smoothing underlayment, creating an attractive, long-lasting floor finish throughout the building. F44 is a solventfree acrylic emulsion adhesive, ideal for the installation of vinyl floorcoverings due to its high bond strength, strong initial tack and long open time. Rocco de Vries, of Rocco de Vries Woning en Projectstoffering, said of the project: "I have been using F. Ball products since they first became available in Holland. I choose them because of their very good quality, great prices and excellent support. Everybody at F. Ball is very friendly and easy to work with, I've never had any problems with an F. Ball product." T 01538 361 633

NEWS Double act

F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has launched Stopgap Fill and Prime, a two component, fast-drying, flexible cement-base primer for use over raised access floor panels and substrates with residues of waterproof or bituminous adhesive, prior to the application of a suitable smoothing underlayment.

Stopgap Fill and Prime has been developed for use specifically with Stopgap 700 Superflex or Stopgap 1200 Pro smoothing underlayments.

Care flagship flooring

1700m² of Polyflor’s vinyl flooring was recently used to create a fresh and spacious environment at Cwmgelli Lodge care facility in Blackwood, Wales, a flagship facility designed to positively meet the needs of younger people who have been diagnosed with dementia or cognitive impairment.

Wood effect Forest fx PUR sheet vinyl in American Oak was installed throughout the Lodge’s communal areas, circulation spaces, café and dining areas as well as bedrooms by Floor Furnishings Ltd of Cardiff. Polysafe Standard PUR safety flooring was also installed to provide sustainable wet slip resistance for residents in en suite bathrooms. Increasing the existing provision for younger people living with dementia, Cwmgelli Lodge provides longer term accommodation for residents, featuring 24 self-contained units split over two floors. Designed by the Seren Group, Cwmgelli Lodge was built in consultation with Andrew Wilson Partnership, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and The Alzheimer’s Society Review Panel. Forest fx’s realistic light wood tones helped to create a refreshing and noninstitutional feel that would contribute to reduced anxiety levels for these younger residents, in an environment far removed from a traditional care setting where older people can be housed. Available in 14 shades, the Forest fx collection includes various wood designs with intricate grains and natural colourways to replicate the beauty of real wood in a practical and durable vinyl sheet format suitable for very heavy commercial installations such as healthcare environments. It is also further enhanced with PUR, Polyflor’s exclusive and robust polyurethane reinforcement which is cross linked and UV cured to provide a low cost, polish-free maintenance regime for the lifetime of the flooring.

The primer has been designed to have thixotropic consistency, which enables joints in raised access panels to be filled during application. When used in combination with Stopgap 700 Superflex, it offers a fast-track alternative to using plywood overlays prior to installing resilient floorcoverings. Stopgap Fill and Prime also delivers exceptional adhesion to a wide range of other subfloor types, including Stopgap waterproof surface membranes, sand/cement screeds, concrete, sound asphalt, granolithic, terrazzo, epoxy and polyurethane resins, and ceramic and quarry tiles. Stopgap Fill and Prime can be applied as a scratch coat or up to thicknesses of 1mm. It is supplied as a 6.6Kg kit, containing a powder and a liquid, to provide a coverage area of approximately 8.5m2 at a thickness of 0.5mm. It has a working time of 10-15 minutes and its fast drying formulation means that it will be ready to receive a smoothing underlayment from just 60 minutes, when applied at a temperature of 20oC. T 01538 361 633

www.f-ball.co.uk

Stephen Traves, Project Manager at The Seren Group commented, “With dementia rates across Wales predicted to increase by 31% and by as much as 44% in some rural areas, coupled with increased levels of younger people now receiving a diagnosis, there was a clear need for Cwmgelli to provide a welcoming and modern interior that was a world away from the clinical care environment. The flooring chosen from Polyflor makes a real contribution to the overall space, helping create an airy feel that promotes relaxation and encourages residents to live as independently as possible”. NEWS Foundation retail focus

The Carpet Foundation is set to step up a gear and focus solely on its retail members going forward. In a significant step, the manufacturers, while still wholeheartedly behind the concept of collaboration, have agreed that a ‘single, unified’ message would be better for all concerned. Going forward, the Carpet Foundation message will be simple, and clear – ‘Buy from a Carpet Foundation retailer’. The sharpened and focussed message will signpost CF retailers as the people to buy carpet from. Over the coming months several initiatives are planned, including a redesign of the website, to reflect this. Commenting on the development, Chief Executive Andrew Stanbridge said: “The Carpet Foundation has been working with independent retailers to promote them as ‘the carpet experts’ and ‘people to go to’ since 2004. Going forward, and with the full blessing of our manufacturers, we will be ramping up this message and focussing entirely on our retailers, while maintaining manufacturer support. You may question the significance of this statement. The reality is that for the last five or six years, we have had to balance that message with trying to give the manufacturers ‘a bang for their buck’. In marketing speak, we have been saying ‘buy a CF manufacturer carpet from a CF retailer’ – which is a bit of a mouthful and a bit of a challenge! This subtle, but important change, will, I am sure, further enhance our benefit to retailers and should increase their confidence in us. The Carpet Foundation manufacturers are all lining up behind this to demonstrate their continued support for independent retailers. They recognise that to grow, they need our retailers to sell more carpet. They are also, I must stress, maintaining their financial support.” In the light of this renewed emphasis, a new Board has been established – which includes Shaun Lewis of Brockway Carpets as the manufacturer representative. John Duncan remains as Chairman and Andrew Stanbridge as Chief Executive. Rob Harding will also sit on the Board and there will be two new Non-Executive Directors, both of whom are connected to the industry. T 01562 755568 www.carpetfoundation.com

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

Wool has been building up to a magnificent crescendo and Wool Floor Show London is going to be the most impressive and stylish statement for wool flooring yet!

Wool Floor Show London (23rd and 24th March 2016)

A New Wool Trade Showcase for the South!

Hot on the heels from our promotional activity at Harrogate, the Campaign for Wool and the wool industry are launching a fabulous trade event for the South. Wool Floor Show London will provide a Spring event for wool carpet manufacturers to fly the flag of quality wool carpets in an area of the country where much of the product is sold.

British Wool Carpet of the Month

The Rare Breeds Range from Brockway Carpets brings a new story to the floor! Brockway has taken wool from rare breeds in the UK and used them undyed in this incredibly environmentally friendly collection. It has the added advantage of a lightweight, crease resistant Envirobac secondary backing which adds further value to the sustainable and green story. It is 100% wool and is made in 2-ply yarn in both 4 and 5 metre widths. The ten shades within this range show the potential of natural British sheep breeds to provide a quite extensive and natural choice without adding dyes.

The event, which is a key part of the Campaign for Wool and British Wool Marketing Board’s promotional activity will see some of the best manufacturing carpet companies gather together to support the many new dynamic promotions which are powering the wool industry forward.

One of these is an important new website for independent wool retailers. WoolRetailer.com will be launched live at the show and is a promotional vehicle for wool carpets that has already received the backing and support of many key manufacturers and buying groups.

The WoolRetailer.com platform includes a wool educational standard that is planned to give retailers and sales personnel ‘Wool Specialist’ status and provide them with access to materials and promotional packages to support their business. Retailers will benefit from registering with the website that offers both retailer and consumer appeal. The aim is to ensure that consumers can find a quality wool retailer in their locality and that wool retailers can gain more knowledge, status and access tools to help them be better informed so they can sell wool carpets.

There will be stunning inspiration installation areas designed in association with leading stylists and magazines helping to see new consumer trends.

A true highlight of the event is the Campaign for Wool’s Wool Carpet Awards which will put wool pride at the heart of this event and celebrate its amazing performance, quality and style.

The venue selected for this new event is the Chelsea Football Club Stadium, which is a perfect location - offering both parking and easily accessible public transport being only a short distance away at Fulham Road tube station. The highlights of central London are quite literally minutes away and there are a host of restaurants within walking distance too. The event is free to attend and we hope that all retailers will put it on the calendar - official registration will start soon. Wool has been building up to a magnificent crescendo and Wool Floor Show London is going to be the most impressive and stylish statement for wool flooring yet!

and why we like it...

Rare Breed sheep are often the unsung heroes/heroines of our uniquely diverse British breed story. The wool from these sheep is generally only available in small quantities, so the rare breed wool types often never make it in to the highly commercial product. But Brockway’s interest in British breeds is compelling and its passion for environmental credibility has all come together and created a really stunning range which celebrates the origin of the fibre. ‘Rare Breeds’ provides an ‘eco’ purchase which is naturally beautiful, luxurious and very worthy too. We like it very much - well done Brockway! THE STOCKLISTS October 2015 Carpet&FlooringReview

Harrogate

Report 2015

Putting their money where their mouth is! Enthusiasm and investment! Last month we reported on the general state of enhanced happiness at Harrogate as many flooring people in all parts of the industry commented on a return of confidence in the sector. Three key indicators of whether there is substance to this sentiment are the number of new products, the type of those products and the amount of interest in point-of-sale. In other words, are we putting our money where our mouth is?! And unlike 2014, the answer is yes. Last year was conspicuously absent of so many new products and much noise was made about re-vamps and re-colourations but substantial product development is being undertaken now. And the nature of those new products is a little higher up the food chain – most notably with more wool in carpet and classier LVT. The new momentum behind wool is unmissable. This is partly due to the tireless efforts of campaigners at the British Wool Marketing Board and the new Wool Carpet Focus Group promoting natural fibre. But it is also a reflection of market conditions that suggest to retailers that consumers have a little more money in their pocket and can be traded up without risking the sale. Steve Byrne of Whitestone Weavers commented: “The wool business genuinely has a head of steam right now and retailers who have ‘de-wooled’ in the last few years really are ringing in and asking more about wool. They have more confidence now that they can make a better sale.” And there have been some impressive wool launches in time for The Flooring Show including Hugh Mackay’s new incarnation of their Durham Twist, Kingsmead’s Roxburgh, Adam’s Pure Brit, Victoria’s First Impressions and Manx’s Pandora Plains. Wool loop is still in the ascendant and star performer of the genre making their debut at the show were Cormar’s new Bouclé Neutrals and Thomas Witter’s #naturally. The colour trends are obvious to all – more shades of grey with some minky and charcoal colours making the mix a little more interesting - but there is also a strong trend in pastel shades across many flooring types that is injecting a little more life into the palette. More interesting is the strong trend towards ‘nearly’ patterns – micro patterns, textures and yarn effects that can’t really be described as a pattern but are an excellent alternative to plain. Cavalier’s new twist and velvet Gemini and MasterWeaver’s Chequers and Contract are strong examples of the type. And while soft is still so strong, there were noticeable moves to differentiate by some suppliers offering lower pile carpets with higher densities such as Abingdon’s Stainfree Supersoft Pastelle, Georgian’s 50/50 Hard Twist and Cavalier’s Pennine Heathers The vinyl business appears to be buoyant too and product quality just keeps getting better and the latest designer products at companies like Karndean, QA, Earthwerks, Avenue and Abingdon’s Distinctive flooring leading the charge. And the last indicator we mentioned above is point of sale and this sector has moved up a key with many manufacturers reporting strong interest from retailers in investing in the latest presentations from companies like Furlong, Victoria and Kingsmead and newcomers TCS. Fells Carpets is especially worthy of mention for their distinctive new displays. All set then for a successful selling season from here until the end of the year so let’s hope there’s a little more icing on the Christmas cake this year!

The buzz is back at Harrogate With more exhibitors than ever; over 175 from 16 countries, and a 9% rise in visitor numbers, The Flooring Show continues to grow from strength to strength. The 2015 edition was buzzing for all 3 days, a result of quality new products from exhibitors; exciting feature areas and positive vibes coming from the retail sector. The total number of unique visitors who attended was 2870, over 300 more attendees than in 2014. “We have worked hard over the past few years to not only improve feature areas at the show, but also attract back exhibitors who had previously left Harrogate,’ comments Wendy Adams, Event Director; ‘the investment we have put into the show is really starting to pay off, and we have had many positive comments from visitors and re-bookings for stands are at an all time high.”

Harrogate Report 2015 Cybergold TV stars Cybergold is now starring on TV with shopping channel QVC in a move that will boost its brand recognition on the High Street. The programmes feature a live demonstration of the anti-slip products for rugs. “We’ve already seen a strong increase in sales and the added awareness will help retailers too,” says Anna Burger of Cybergold. The company has built a great reputation for the reliability of its Rug Control underlay rolls and pre-cut underlays which are available in two weights and also its trigger spray system. New for Harrogate was the Superlux underlay product designed for wood floors. Based on a grey polyester fabric, Superlux is sticky on the rug side but has a non-tacky black film that sits against the floor, leaving no residue to attract dirt. Thomas Witter New wool generation Thomas Witter is looking to a new wool generation with the launch of it’s latest range – branded with the hash tag name #naturally. The key objective was to deliver 100% wool loop quality at a retail price less than £20. “This is what everyone wants and it’s not an easy one to deliver without cutting corners,” says Robbie Thomson (pictured below). “But I’m delighted that after a real struggle, we have developed a process to make a twist of uncompromising quality at this price point.” #naturally comes in two designs – a crossover texture and a rib – in eight colours that are right on trend for a younger consumer. “We are really pleased with the result,” says Robbie, “and we have had a great reaction at the show.” The new range is being rolled out to retailers during October and November. ACG Profit through protection The Associated Carpet Group stand at The Flooring Show demonstrated how own-label marketing can be set out in-store to great effect – with a strong visual style while protecting the retailer from price comparisons outside his door. The buying group’s Smart Choice mainstream branding in its red and black livery is complemented by an up-market Finesse ‘Fine British Carpets’ brand for the widest appeal. The protection that own-label marketing provides is a key part of the ACG story these days. “Retailers expect a buying group to get them a great deal with the top suppliers but a top-quality own label offer is becoming increasingly essential to protect your margin,” says ACG’s Richard Moore. “The professionalism of the Smart Choice point-of-sale impresses consumers and the own-label approach gives retailers the confidence to get a better sale.” T 01942 825520

“Retailers always ask if they can have something different, something exclusive and it’s our job to give it to them”

TCS has arrived in style in the UK flooring marketplace with a sophisticated presentation of carpets that extends the company’s established furniture offer. Focused on the independent retailer, TCS set up in Ireland in 1998 and have built a major operation across the UK and Ireland in furniture and bedding. The move into carpet was announced at the end of last year and this Summer, the smart TCS point-of-sale is rolling out to retailers. The company has launched with 12 competitively-priced polypropylene ranges under it’s ‘Be Inspired’ branding – covering versatile plain twists as well as a wide selection of heathers, stripes and saxonies including attractive options in the silky and super-soft sectors. Eight further ranges are under development for launch at the end of the year. “Retailers always ask if they can have something different, something exclusive and it’s our job to give it to them,” says company founder Thomas Small.

Sleeping partner? A ready-made beds business is also on offer for flooring retailers from TCS with a package that delivers a fully fitted beds studio to your store plus free training in selling beds and mattresses.

“We came to Harrogate to listen to what people want and I am very happy with the reaction we have had so far to the ranges and to our presentation which everyone has said is fresh and modern,” said Thomas. “We are enjoying building a new business in the way the market wants. We’re in this for the long haul and we are investing in getting it right.” With substantial stockholding in Heysham, Lancashire, the company is able to offer a rapid service and has ample capacity for growth as the flooring business adds to its furnishing portfolio.

“It’s easier than selling carpets!” says Thomas Small of TCS. “There are good margins and its gives you a new line of revenue. If you are not already selling beds, you have to ask yourself why not!” TCS provide a ‘white-glove service’ – fulfilling the orders from retailers direct to the consumer, right through to installation without the retailer having to intervene. Harrogate Report 2015 MasterWeaver Excellence in the unexpected MasterWeaver is a classy company for quality carpet that offers something a little extra. They are well known for their superb plaids and a range of top notch axminsters but worth a closer look are the very contemporary textures of their cut & loop Contrast and Chequers collections. These carpets meet a modern market demand for ‘almost a pattern’ and look distinctive and exclusive to give a little extra inspiration to consumers who are bored by the mainstream offers. A Master Weaver sample book does give you an extra edge on the High Street! New for Harrogate was another cut & loop wilton – Seascapes Surf (pictured to the right of Slavco Radisa opposite). This 100% wool range has a luxurious feel and comes in six modern, strong colours with a smart, square pattern. T 01562 754382 www.masterweaver.co.uk

Kingsmead Saturated with soft? Kingsmead has the antidote with its 50/50 Georgian Hard Twist, launched at the Flooring Show in 12 carefully chosen pale colours in 4 and 5m. Half wool and half polyester, the fabric feels like its going to last and stay looking good longer. The company’s keen commitment to wool is demonstrated with the launch of Kingsmead’s Roxburgh, a new 80/20 wool twist that should become a strong seller with a contemporary 12-colour choice including neutrals and a smart set of the latest greys with a darker charcoal. And if grey is your thing, Kingmead has come out with another of their ‘books’ – remember their famous ‘Book of Stripes’. This time, the bestselling book is more infamous - ‘Shades of Grey’ brings together everything Kingsmead manufacturers in the colour and that adds up to 12 options in twist, six in plain loop with two designs, and six stripes.

The Easy Clean range The Clean Easy range from Kingsmead has acquired an entry-level option that looks very sellable at the competitive end of the market. Fantastic and Fantastic Plus use Kingsmead’s 2-ply Everlon yarn in 14 colours – most of which are heathered apart from three plains. The range options offer Action Bac or felt backing giving a very competitive choice for price-conscious consumers. T 01827 831424 www.kingsmeadcarpets.co.uk

Kingsmead was also proudly showing off its new point-of-sale with up to 17 wall units and a snappy small lectern that has done particularly well with retailers.

Harrogate Report 2015 Hugh Mackay Winning with wool Hugh Mackay are on the crest of a woolly wave right now and strong backers of the ‘cool to buy wool’ campaign so the re-launch of their flagship Durham Twist could not be better timed. The aim is to ensure that the new Durham Twist has all the answers for consumers seeking a smart, competitively priced wool twist now that the colour bank has been completely overhauled. From 40 colours before, the range now has 60 to choose from – organised in three collections called Elements, Naturals and Colours – plus a fourth collection of 10 coordinated stripes. All British made in wool, there are three weights and three widths (4, 5 and 1m) and it’s being rolled out in distinctive new black branding that sets it apart. Hugh Mackay’s Vince Holden said at The Flooring Show: “Everyone who has seen the new range just loves it. We spent a long time getting the re-launch right – about 18 months overall – but the reaction we have got says it was worth it – it’s a real winner!” T 01429 892555 www.whitestone.co.uk

Barnscroft Secrets of sheepskin How do you buy quality sheepskin without getting fleeced? It’s not easy to identify the standard of products which are sourced from all over the world. “There is already a lot of mixed and variable quality in the market,” says Steve Upperton of sheepskin and cowhide specialists Barnscroft. “We have focused on finding suppliers who deliver consistently high quality with a clean, dense fibre. As a result, our sheepskin business is achieving great results and this type of rug is as popular as ever.” Steve has travelled extensively to see for himself and to build a base of growers than can be relied on. Barncroft supply the sheepskins in a variety of colours, pile lengths and sizes alongside their niche range of other animal hides creating a striking effect for the design conscious consumer. Manx Carpets Keeping the options open Manx made it to Harrogate with four new products including three popular wool ranges led by Pandora Plains – a go anywhere 80/20 that’s set to be a new flagship collection for the company. With 18 on-trend colours, in 4 and 5m and four weights which include a top-end 60oz, Graham Harris says: “A retailer can do a lot with this range and has the opportunity to trade up and down to secure a sale.” Another key launch at the Flooring Show was Ashworth Heathers. Building on the established strength of the popular 80/20 Ashworth range, Manx have added 16 very subtly heathered options in a 2-ply yarn which promises exemplary performance at a competitive price. Also worth a look is the collection Manx has made of their best selling textures. Natural Styles has three textures – strata, basket and semi-Brussels styles - in 100% wool and six colours. Victoria Carpets The art of distinction Victoria Carpets has a strong sense of energy and purpose around it now with lots happening across the portfolio of the business. “This is an exciting time for Victoria,” says Jonathan Stone. “We are growing the business, expanding the offer and creating lots of new opportunities for retailers. “Our aim at Victoria is not to be mundane,” says Jonathan. “We have created an expectation that Victoria will do it differently and that creates some pressure on us – but a very healthy pressure.” Already this year five new ranges have arrived – and there’s a clear expectation of more to come! Among the new line-up, Aura is an interesting new 50oz polypropylene with a soft-touch yarn but some smart engineering in the product’s development has created a soft carpet that looks like a hard twist with a very dense, high performance construction. “This is a well built carpet and we’ve given it real colour with a freshness which will appeal to a younger audience,” says Jonathan. The colour bank also includes an impressive very white white. Another new range that Jonathan describes as “distinctively Victoria” is First Impressions which has been a runaway success for the company. A tenth gauge 63oz polypropylene, it was launched just over a year ago in 12 colours and came to Harrogate with four new shades including a stylish blue and lilac. In Victoria’s wool collection, Atlas Berber is an attractive 80/20 that comes across as halfway between a heather and a berber in 16 rustic colours while new Debonair has replaced Radiance to offer a high performance 80/20 with nylon at a competitive price in 12 solid colours and eight subtle heaters. The showcase range at the centre of the stand at The Flooring Show is Victoria Twist – the company’s ultimate 80/20. The collection is based on the former Options range – so called because of its wide range of 288 options – but there’s many more permutations to choose from now with 3 weights and two widths across a contemporary new colourbank of 36 shades – complemented by six elegant wool loop stripes in 3-ply 100% wool. And worth a final mention in the ‘different’ department is Victoria’s neat presentation of carpet tile options – ideal for retailers who encounter soft contract opportunities and want to look professional with an offer of 120 options in 12 ranges in 100% solution dyed nylon. All this is stacked inside a smart unit about the size of a shoe box! T 01562 749300 www.victoriacarpets.com

Harrogate Report 2015 Adam Carpets Flying the flag

Bronte Carpets Waste not want not Bronte Carpets sales proposition is so simple it sometimes seems to confuse people! Any width, any colour and made to plan shapes sounds like it answers all the questions - but consumers don’t necessarily know the questions! And they think custom carpet means expensive carpet. “We have a great message but the trick is to keep it simple and not get too technical about how we do it. It’s all about what does the consumer get out of it,” says Andrew Broughton at Bronte.

Reinforcing their growing reputation as a trend-setter, Adam Carpets came to Harrogate with the latest in a line of fashionable flooring – a smart new 80/20 Pure Brit. Pure in the sense that it is made using undyed British Wool and Brit! in the fact that it is sheared, spun and manufactured within the UK. Three of the ten stunning natural colours were carefully seamed together on the stand floor to make a striking Union Flag. Mood board point-of-sale display boards are such a distinctive feature of Adam Carpets merchandising now and the company has launched two more for the fun and funky Brit Pop range and the earthy textures of Free Spirit – each showing a set of interior trends and photography that has inspired the collection. “The response to mood boards has been amazing and we know now that there are leading directly to new sales in store,” says Adam’s Eamonn Prescott.

Making a carpet to a shape plan can save waste around awkward areas and eliminates waste for both under width and over width areas in consumers’ homes– saving money and avoiding seams of course. “You only pay for the carpet you need – and then you can afford a better carpet,” says Andrew. He has designed a new tombola that uses modern, app-like graphics to communicate these benefits. T 01282 862736 www.brontecarpets.co.uk

British Wool Marketing Board Wool hub at the heart of Harrogate Wool was credited with reviving the future of The Flooring Show last year when the British Wool Marketing Board and The Campaign for Wool created the Wool Trends Hub as the centerpiece of the event. That inspired move brought most of the major wool houses back to the event and created a real buzz. If wool was all about revival last year, it’s almost rampant this year with a surge in confidence in natural fibre that manufacturers say is showing through in stronger sales and better margins on the High Street. “We have got to show the way ahead for wool in this market and the message is getting through with great support from the manufacturers, “ says Bridgette Kelly of BWMB and The Campaign for Wool. “There was tremendous enthusiasm for wool at the show.” The Wool Trends hub in Harrogate showed four impressive roomsets styled in association with Homes & Gardens magazine and Sanderson and Zoffany fabrics. A series of Wool Seminars at the show were also well supported. The British Wool Marketing Board and The Campaign for Wool will be building its retailer programme to sustain the momentum of the campaign. “British consumers are responding well to the renewed interest in wool so now we’re going to follow through with retailers to help them turn that interest into sales,” says Bridgette. As well as point of sale support, they are working on the woolretailer.com project to be launched early next year as a major resource for retailers to create a sales environment to sell up wool. “We hope woolretailer.com will make a real difference to how wool is sold on the high street and we are really looking forward to working with retailers on that,” said Bridgette. Meanwhile, BWMB and The Campaign for Wool have been helping the Wool Carpet Focus Group with their “cool to buy wool” campaign and have produced a set of showcards with the smiling sheep in sunglasses. “Who can resist a smiling sheep in shades,” added Bridgette. Meeting peak season demands which can escalate by 50% in the fourth quarter is always a challenge for suppliers in the flooring sector – and even if they make it OK to Christmas, depleted stocks are a problem early in the new year. “We made the decision to invest in customer service and a big part of that is building stock,” says Steve Woodhead marketing director at Interfloor. “Our warehouse in Haslingden is pretty full so we have invested over £1 million in increasing our stockholding at our Accrington site and we are confident we can meet demand with fast delivery around the UK.” Interfloor used The Flooring Show to launch Jazz to give people more options in the Tredaire range. Jazz at 12mm, 98 kg PU underlay in a red livery sits alongside 8mm Brio in green and 10mm Zest in orange. Visitors also saw the impressive Flamecheck PU product that has been certified to the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) flame retardency standard and will be used as an additional product to target the international marine market. Later this month, the company will pull together its top 50 branded underlay products into a new Catalogue which will have detailed sections on usage for every type of flooring and location as well as answering specialised installation questions. Harrogate Report 2015 Fells Carpets Individual appeal Fashion-conscious Fells Carpets are out to challenge the conventions of carpet marketing in retailers with an innovative approach that attracted a lot of attention at The Flooring Show. A full overhaul of their point of sale systems has been built around a keyword campaign – ‘I’m individual, I’m inspired, I’m bold, I’m unique. – and with eye-catching backlit acrylic display units in the company’s striking black and green livery. “A lot of carpet merchandising looks much the same. We wanted to help retailers individualise their shops and make a real impact,” says Carl Cummings of Fells, UK’s biggest stockists of patterned wilton carpets. “If we can inspire the retailer, we can all inspire the consumer to buy a better product. We have had a great reaction to this approach at Harrogate,” he added. T 01977 662211 www.fellscarpets.co.uk

Kenburn The big green carpet machine Kenburn has a crush on carpets that is making a major impact on the way the industry handles its waste. “Becoming more environmentally friendly by recycling new and old carpet and underlay in theory sounds great but it has to be financially viable,” is Kenburn’s Simon Wells pragmatic approach that has seen sales of the Kenburn’s carpet crusher go from strength to strength since it was launched a year ago. The crusher compacts carpet and underlay waste to a quarter of its original size making transportation and recycling easier and cheaper. The system suits larger retailers who are already spending several hundreds of pounds a month on skips – especially where they are removing customers’ old carpets. Kenburn has teamed up with Carpet Recycling UK to collect the mixed new/old waste for recycling as a fuel for ‘waste to energy’ plants – a scheme that will get added impetus by 2025 when the EU is expected to ban carpet waste from landfill disposal. “We have had an incredible year with very strong demand for both buying and renting machines,” says Simon. “With the flooring industry in particular extremely keen to divert their recyclable waste from landfill.” T 01727 844 988 www.kenburn.co.uk

Cormar Carpets Capturing the mood Bouclé Neutrals at Cormar captures the fashion for wool loop with 50/50 balance for price/performance and it comes in lots of the natural colours with stoney beiges and greys that everyone wants. “We are getting a great reaction to this,” says David Cormack at Cormar. Launched earlier in the year, Bouclé Neutrals comes in three designs – a plain level loop in six colours, a textured loop in three designs and a set of stripes – and the construction feels like an all-wool carpet. Since the launch of the Cormar Sales Portal four years ago, more than £60m of business has gone through the system and 25% of orders are placed this way. The latest version – to be launched at the beginning of next year - uses a stylish dashboard approach and is geared for mobile devices to give instant access to product information, stock and delivery data, account history and much more. Multi-width in wool Multi-width is a key feature of Abingdon’s wool carpets which sets them apart from much of the competition and they are capitalizing on the advantage by marketing this benefit across the collection. This includes the best-selling Charter Supreme Gold which has also just acquired five fresh new colours including a duck egg blue and other pastels to add up to 18 options in all - with a guaranteed colour match across all the seven widths available. The Welsh Collection in three weights has also acquired five new colours and Abingdon’s attractive Anniversary Twist in New Zealand wool is also offered in multi-width. Abingdon Carpets A new standard for soft Everyone knows the market has gone soft in the last two years – but where’s it going next? Abingdon has the answer! Stainfree Supersoft Pastelle was launched at Harrogate as an intelligent alternative to the increasing saturated market for ever deeper, super soft fibres that your fingers disappear into. This carpet has spent some months in technical development at Abingdon’s own polypropylene yarn extrusion plant in Wales to create a carpet that is impressively soft for sure but which has a lower, denser pile of reassuring quality. “We have taken polypropylene softness to the next level,” says Abingdon’s Martin Peace. “This is an amazingly soft product which still looks and feels like a proper carpet! The response here from retailers has been fantastic.” Stainfree Supersoft Pastelle in 4 and 5m comes in 16 colours with lots of greys and fashionable minky colours but including a set of true pastille shades that make it highly attractive to younger buyers. Abingdon has been busy elsewhere as always and launched several new ranges at The Flooring Show including the strongly textured look of Stainfree Rustique in ten colours and Berber Elite – the latest range to benefit from the clever re-formulated Aqua Pro-Tec treatment that makes stains sit on the top of the carpet pile to be easily blotted way. Multi-width Berber Elite is likely to be a big seller for Abingdon who are strong on berber designs. This carpet is made up from three coloured fibres creating effects across it’s 12 options which vary from a subtle design to a strong berber effect which is almost a pattern – very appealing in today’s market. Distinctive Design Flooring Brand new brand It’s all new at Abingdon’s LVT business Distinctive Design Flooring which has reinvented itself in some style and is fired up and ready to roll out to the market. Enter new boss Jay Taylor. “I am starting at a great time as we have a whole new business to get behind. We are a young company with a young team that can offer something fresh and original to retailers who are looking for a portfolio that appeals to a more modern consumer,” he says. Everything is new – the black and white branding, the brochure and a new website and retailers responded to the approach with strong interest in the sharp new shop-in-shop point-of-sale package. New products are being introduced over the next few months but an eyecatching launch at Harrogate was the Vintage Parquet Collection which has the flexibility for herringbone, zig-zag, brick and box patterns across a range of decors. Harrogate Report 2015 Asiatic Carpets Fashion focus Asiatic can be counted on to deliver distinctive new products into the marketplace and the fashionable focus on their Katherine Carnaby designer range has created a buzz about the rug business. Launched earlier this year, the range comes in three different styles all with a unique Asiatic signature. Chrome is a high shine 100% viscose with a fashionable lustre that comes in 12 plain colours and four stripes. Coast is also a New Zealand Wool and viscose blend that couldn’t be more different with a chunky knitted look in five plains plus three stripes and four diamond textured options. And finally Darcy is a wilton that adds 5% wool to the viscose mix to give a smart finish and subtle design in seven colours. Unusually for a rug range, Katherine Carnaby collection is presented in a neat presentation box that completes the distinctive designer appeal. “This is a new approach for us and it’s had a very positive reaction,” said Neal Farrell of Asiatic Carpets. Axminster Carpets Seeing the future It’s all ‘app-ening’ at Axminster with the launch of their clever Carpet Selector app which allows retailers and consumers to see the most popular ranges from Axminster Carpets in a choice of roomsets. The idea is to give consumers a real feel for their carpet choice would really look like on the floor,” says Hilary Clements of Axminster. “This approach takes the risk out of the purchase and gives the consumer more confidence to buy.” The tekkies at Axminster have gone further by creating a prototype virtual reality headset to see their carpets in live 3D – changing the view angle as you move your head (pictured top right with Southern Sales Director Marc Helliwell). “We are exploring boundaries with this and it has blown people away,” says Hilary. “It is early days for this type of technology but visualization will be a part of the future of retailing and we want to be seen at the forefront of the technology.” T 01297 32244

Furlong Flooring Attention to detail Furlong are showcasing their best-selling Prestige range right now and have worked hard to build a sophisticated presentation to match the affordable quality of the range. Always innovating on point-of-sale, the latest eye-catching addition is the use of top quality shiny perspex graphics for their distinctive black headers and also for labelling the samples – a small detail that makes a big difference. Similarly the new lecterns have a hanger at the side to hold a full pattern book alongside the waterfall of samples – making it easier to work with and avoiding bending down to lift samples off a messy floor. “Right down to the smallest detail we want to get everything right so that the retailer has what he needs to make a sale,” says Furlong’s Neil Valentine. “we’re delighted with the reaction at the show and we thanks all the visitors who have made it such a busy event for us.” Cavalier sales rep Andrew Westwell The prestige range in 100% polypropylene now comprises Satisfaction, Opulence, Elegance, Dolce Molda and Trident with an excellent breadth of fashionable new colours. Cavalier Carpets Making a difference Cavalier came to Harrogate with something for everyone in their latest launches and enjoyed a busy show as a result. “We’ve seen excellent growth in business and a lot more confidence among retailers,’ says Hans Lowe. Having the right products helps a lot of course and the introduction of Pennine Heathers this year has been a winner for Cavalier. This 80/20 5o oz has a high stitch rate and low pile to create a very decent carpet at a competitive price. Already a big hit, the range is now being offered in 16 colours and 4 & 5m widths. Being known as a wool house means you have to be more selective with your polypropylene offer says Hans so the new Stain-less Serenity has been very carefully specified with a denser pile, a thicker fibre but a finer yarn. Two weights are available in 4 and 5m and the heavier one outweighs and out performs some of the market leaders in the sector says the company. By way of contrast, their other big story at Harrogate was the arrival of Gemini. This clever tenth gauge carpet comes in ten colours and two widths and has been in development for some time. It is described by Cavalier as “the perfect synthesis of twist and velvet” and it is being launched now as part of the posh Cavalier Couture collection aimed at selected retailers. “It’s for people who don’t want a plain carpet nor a pattern,” says Hans. “It really is distinctive and nobody else has got anything like it.” He’s right - it matches a market trend towards subtle pattern and deserves to do well. Harrogate Report 2015 SEBO Boost on a button SEBO has been steadily building its business with UK retailers who appreciate the sales model that sees them buying a demonstration machine while SEBO fulfills the sales orders direct to the retailer’s customer. The latest SEBO X4 Pet model was their star of the show. The Germanmade machine has just been upgraded with a boost button that brings the suction head closer to the carpet to lift out stubborn pet hairs with ease. The way the brush head slides out to be de-tangled from longer hair is also a unique feature. “The specification keeps getting better and with a large capacity bag and a highly effective charcoal filters that you don’t have to replace for two years, this machine beats the rest by far for pet owners, ” says SEBO’s Kevin Hockney. “Once the retailer has made the sale, we do the rest and this can be a nice extra revenue stream for an independent store.” T 01494 465533 www.sebo.co.uk

Masterpiece Customer satisfaction Charles Pearson can tell you just how good his planning and estimating software is but it sounds even better coming from a happy customer! Jon Evans of All 4 Floors has used MasterPiece for a year and says: “If you’re thinking of using estimating software then I would certainly give MasterPiece a call as I now wouldn’t use anything else. After trying several other systems I found that MasterPiece was simple to use and the online and telephone support is good. “MasterPiece has a very simple drag and drop system for planning. Gone are the days of sitting down each evening with various pads and graph paper!” T 01737 355831 www.masterpiece-system.com

Metro Group Marketing man and van If you thought mobile marketing was all about smartphones, think again! Metro’s marketing support for its members really is mobile with the buying group’s design studio and production hub built into a large van that covers the UK. Members get access to a full marketing package of signage, banners and labelling for their stores. The mobile unit rolls up with a full studio and a professional designer who can customise the Group’s creative branding (with or without the Groups Carpet 1st identity) which can then be produced on board using top quality large format printers and laminators. “This is a unique service from a buying group,” says Metro’s Stephen Depport (pictured right). “We launched it a year ago as a trial but now it is an essential part of our service. High profiles

Ball & Young has a highly successful profiles and trims business under the brand name Floorline and its latest launch at The Flooring Show is its first range of stick-down products. The UK-made self adhesive profiles are quick and easy to fit and are available in five profiles in either aluminium or simbrass finishes.

Ball & Young Ready teddy go Putting personality into underlay products is something of a Ball & Young speciality. Not content with having Cloud 9 as the best known brand in the PU foam sector, their most recent product launches have attracted attention for their style – Caviar & Crystal as their posh product and most recently Charleston, launched earlier this year, as a fun family underlay. Now consumers who buy this latest underlay are in for a big surprise as today may be the day they get a teddy bear called Charleston. Ball & Young have given out hundreds of bears which retailers can give to their fitter, intending that the bear is left behind at the end of the installation. “The whole thing is a nice bit of fun which has gone down very well with everyone,” says Ann Shaw of Ball & Young. “People love the idea and of course consumers are reminded which underlay they bought.” As well as fun, Ball & Young is offering freshness. The company has rolled out a programme across its entire Cloud9 range called Ultra-Fresh, an effective anti-microbial additive that is durable and tested to international standards to achieve the best hygienic performance for its products. Cool wool cleans up! Wool Carpet Focus Group The Wool Carpet Focus Group set out to demonstrate wool carpet’s ‘bouncebackability’ and cleanability to visitors in an attention-grabbing style. Two large-scale bespoke woven wool rugs, bearing the message that it is indeed, ‘cool to buy wool #Naturally’ and showing a smiling sheep in sunglasses, were placed in the two foyers. Over the three days these rugs experienced a footfall of 18,200, the wear and tear that an average hallway in a family home would receive in 19 months. Due to wool’s natural soil and spill repellency, the rugs needed minimal maintenance with just vacuuming and spot removal carried out during the first two days, and one of the rugs receiving a low moisture clean at the end of day two (the equivalent ‘one year’ point if installed in a family home). Assisted by The WoolSafe Organisation, the demonstration was an overwhelming success, despite the best efforts of the weather, these rugs were presented ‘like new’ each morning to the astonishment of staff and guests. Harrogate Report 2015 Telenzo Ideas for the future Optimism, enthusiasm and ideas abound at Telenzo. “We are really trying to push ahead and we have some nice ideas coming through that are going to make a difference,” says Phil Hartley of Telenzo. “Retailers are so much more buoyant now than they have been for some years and we want to give them the right products to work with.” Barbican has been a big success for the company and they were showing prototypes at Harrogate in the form of five new stripes for Barbican which will be available in the new year. The stripe is ‘crinkly’ which gives the design more movement in a very attractive way. Building on another success, the show introduced Liberty – a great 100% 3-ply wool stripe in three colourways which coordinates beautifully with Telenzo’s new woven-look bouclé Diversity. Pictured here also is an intriguing point-of-sale idea from Telenzo. ‘Books and hooks’ gives a stylish, interiors-themed look to presenting pattern books in store – simple, sophisticated and effective! Using decors from the popular Luvanto collection, QA showcased patterns created by their highprecision water jet cutting techniques such as asymmetric herringbone and distinctive black and white designs. The cutting is done to order in the UK so highly customised floors can be delivered in about a week from order. “We wanted to show people what is possible, giving retailers and interior designers the chance to create something really special for their customers,” said Garry Atmore of QA. New colours have also come into the range – including a smart black ash and fashionable winter oak – making 30 options available in dryback and nine in the click version. H&V Carpets Soft sell The list just gets longer at H&V Carpets with an impressive portfolio of products which has grown quickly and was added to at The Flooring Show with several new launches. “We had an excellent show,” says Paul Hugo of H&V. “There is a real buzz about the business at the moment and our expanded range of products is covering all the bases at the sort of competitive pricing that retailers need in this market.” Among six new ranges that H&V brought to Harrogate was a collection based on their own new soft-touch polypropylene fibre Zetalon, making a dramatic debut in Sensuality, a super soft saxony in two weights. The company also had the very first samples of the Silky range, also in Zetalon, which got a great reaction from retailers looking to follow current interior trends. Lano Launch of luxury Lano Carpets again enjoyed a hectic Harrogate as retailers from across the country visited its stand at The Flooring Show to see some brand new innovations and concepts from the Belgian manufacturer. With the launch of The Taste of Luxury concept that features SmartStrand and SmartStrand Silk qualities, the increasing profile of the super soft and stain-resistant Eccelena yarn, the hugely popular Easy Care collection, and a successful rug promotion, Lano’s stand was as busy as ever. “This year’s Flooring Show has once again proved to be a success for us,” enthuses Birger Karlsson, UK and Ireland Sales Director. “Our Taste of Luxury collection is one of the biggest launches of the year and the show was the first opportunity to reveal our display concepts. We received excellent feedback to these more style-savvy units that make more of presentation but lose none of the ‘easy to touch’ quality that’s so important for carpet purchases.” The growing number of qualities made from Eccelena polyprop yarn also proved a highlight of the show for Lano. With inherent stain resistance and a soft touch, as well as excellent appearance retention this latest fibre innovation joins the super-soft trend in residential carpet. “Our new introductions ensure that we have carpet ranges that respond to the latest trends, chiefly the huge demand for super soft carpets that lose nothing in performance and resilience. With Eccelena we have a value-orientated solution, while our SmartStrand and Smartstrand Silk qualities promise a super soft feel with 25-year warranty and the use of bio-based content,” concludes Birger. Woolsafe Innovative impact The WoolSafe Organisation is delighted with the impact of its endeavours at this year’s Flooring Show, the organisation exploiting its adjoining stands to maximum effect. Hall C was treated by WoolSafe to the very best in wool care explanations and demonstrations across the three-day period, along with wool-based goody bags containing innovative products and ideas from the Wool Carpet Focus Group (WCFG). Although veterans of the show, even the WoolSafe team themselves could not have envisaged the success that has come hand in hand with Harrogate 2015. Unprecedented levels of attendance and a general feel of optimism cascaded through the exhibition centre, the increased footfall also giving WoolSafe the perfect platform to carry out its wool cleanability challenges. Assisted by The WoolSafe Organisation, WCFG set out to demonstrate wool carpet’s ‘bouncebackability’ and cleanability to visitors - see page 49 for details. The industry is starting to appreciate the idea that wool is not only the springiest and most comfortable of any carpet fibre, but due to the way it releases soil it is also the easiest to clean. This challenge was a true stamp of approval on the appearance retention of wool, something that WoolSafe has been championing for some time. This message was enhanced with demonstrations at the WoolSafe stands, with coffee and red wine removed using nothing more than the WoolSafe Approved WOW spotter and tissue paper, to the amazement of onlookers. F&X Carpets Aevita advantage With numerous innovations in fibre from one of the brightest new brands in flooring, F&X Carpets proved a major attraction for visitors to this year’s Flooring Show. Highly competitive styles in Himalaya wool carpet and Suretex stain-resistant polypropylene fibres affirmed the manufacturer’s ability to compete with offerings from more established brands, but it was the introduction of Aevita that stole the show. With a fibre and backing made entirely from plastic bottles, selected Aevita carpets achieve an extraordinary 97% recycled content by weight and are equipped with the performance and style that are sure to make them a huge hit among UK consumers. “The launch of Aevita demonstrates that recycled content carpets do not need to carry a cost disadvantage, nor do they need to have any style or liveability trade-off,” explains Gordon Hugo, UK sales manager, F&X Carpets. “With stain-resistance, resilience and softness, carpets made with Aevita tick all the right boxes for homeowners looking for carpet that fits in with modern life.” With styles playing on the popular luxurious silk-like look that is now popular in contemporary interiors, F&X has also used its manufacturing expertise to deliver a more wool-like look to selected carpets, making Aevita an option for classic interiors too. Marketing insights Authentic and stylish Aspirations of hardwood floors are easily achieved As the aspirational choice of home owners, it’s unlikely that hardwood floors will ever go out of style. The appeal is simple, real wood is authentic, renewable, stylish and hard wearing. And today hardwood flooring consumers have more options than ever before, in colour, texture, width and length. Whether it’s solid or engineered, a natural floor with its inherent textures and grains has enduring beauty that also adds value to your home. The designs have a one-strip ‘plank’ format enhanced by a bevelled edge along all four sides. Colour tones range from light beige/grey Oak Vista, to deep toned Tveta, which is smoked to give a brown/black hue. Surface treatments include brushing, handscraping, sawing, staining and smoking, and all designs have an oiled prefinish. V4 Woodflooring known for quality hardwood flooring has increased its range of wood floors significantly this year.

Kährs - Smaland Collection, Oak Vista

“Kährs latest collection, Småland features a dynamic timber surface with a unique composition of knots, graining and cracks.” Renowned for its quality and performance, Kährs award-winning range of wood floors offers a wealth of design opportunities to suit all specifications. 58 November 2015

Kährs latest collection, Småland features a dynamic timber surface with a unique composition of knots, graining and cracks. Its’ very rustic, undulating appearance is complemented with a range of surface treatments, which create a multi-faceted surface. The new designs are crafted from sustainable oak, sourced from the Småland woodlands. Suitable for contract and residential environments, the multi-layered construction (based on the original ‘parquet’ design - invented and patented by Kährs in 1941), gives optimum stability so can be installed over underfloor heating.

Recognising that a wider product choice is important for the specification market and retailers alike, V4 is building on the huge success of their Urban Nature collection of hand finished engineered oak floors. New products include an innovative engineered parquet Wood Block Collection for use over underfloor heating. Also new to the V4 range is their DECO Collection which offers 6 new rich coloured oak planks at affordable high street prices. At the other end of the market V4 has introduced several bespoke collections including Boutique Collection and Floor Diffusion with boards manufactured in Europe to order. V4 is now one of the largest suppliers to retail in the country and has just expanded operations to include a new distribution hub in the Midlands, able to provide a range of exciting floors and finishes with a consistent and flexible delivery service in their own vehicles.

READERS’ SURVEY

Underlay is a ‘good earner’

are selling more underlay

…unless the internet nicks the business! Our readers are very positive towards underlay and although it is commonly said that half of all carpet goes out without underlay, most of our respondents put the figure at around only 20% and some 57% said underlay was a key opportunity to grow their business. The internet however represents a particular threat in this area, more so than carpet sales for example. “It should be illegal to sell underlay on the internet,” said a London retail more in anger than hope! “Manufacturers should stop shops and warehouse selling their underlay on the internet at trade prices by not allowing them to use their logos or branding, as this is taking vital profit needed for everyone else,” said a reader in Sussex. A Yorkshire retailer agreed: “Web prices make it difficult to get any margin on branded products.” Nearly 30% said they were selling more underlay than they were 5 years ago and 84% said the new ‘posh’ underlays have a place in their store for consumers who ‘want the best’.

60% find it easy to sell underlay

57% see underlay as a key opportunity

Retailers says it’s not difficult to persuade consumers to go with new underlay when they buy carpet with more than 60% saying they found little resistance. Underlay in itself doesn’t appear to be especially price sensitive. “I have noticed customers are aware of carpet prices but have no idea about underlay prices including branded named products,” said a Somerset reader. “It is always good to go through the various options of underlay with the consumer. When it is consumers that are purchasing for their own houses, then they will be more than willing to get the best,” said a South East retailer. A Midlands store commented: “People rarely ask the price of the underlay or even look at the different qualities they just go for the cheapest overall price.” Only about half of our readers used any kind of demonstration to show customers the benefits of better underlay And yet as one North East retailer commented: “Too many customers believe underlay is just underlay and they are all the same.” Asked which type of underlay retailers preferred, we were not to surprised to get 80% in favour of PU but consumers are often less sure with only 60% in the PU camp, some regarding rubber as a more premium product. Retailers seem generally happy with manufacturers with 84% of our sample saying they charged a fair price and 80% happy with the sampling service. However, threequarters of our readers said there was now too much product choice in the market. But a Hampshire retailer was disappointed: “We find we get no discussions from the major manufacturers about how they can help us sell more of their product. No POS, no promotional ideas - they are generally apathetic.” Finally a retailer in Birmingham summed up: “Tell every customer ‘the quality of the underlay is every bit as important as the quality of the carpet’ because it’s true. You don’t need to tell them that it’s a great way of earning yourself more money!”

NEWS Crush to go greener

The Independent family run business established in 1895 Gillies of Broughty Ferry Dundee recently purchased a Kenburn Carpet Crusher in order to recycle all their new and old post-consumer carpet and underlay waste.

As one of Scotland’s premier furniture and carpet retailers, Gillies pride themselves in offering their customers exceptional customer service which includes the uplifting and removal of their old carpet and underlay. Gillies Managing Director Ian Philp comments “due to the hundreds of square metres of flooring we install every week from our four stores it’s inevitable our fitters will uplift and remove large volumes of post-consumer carpet and underlay waste”. “Installing a Kenburn Carpet Crusher has enabled Gillies to introduce a zero to landfill policy which has received an enthusiastic response from our customers and informing them that their old carpet and underlay waste is now converted into a “waste to energy” fuel to power concrete kilns as a replacement for coal shows Gillies commitment to the environment” Simon Wells from Kenburn adds: “Since the launch of the “carpet crusher” at the Flooring Show in Harrogate last year it’s become apparent to us that the flooring industry in particular is extremely keen to divert their recyclable waste from landfill and in doing so reducing their ever increasing skip costs at the same time is an added bonus.” 01727 844988 sales@kenburn.co.uk

Flower on Flooring by Dennis Flower

The brave new world of LVT design Earthwerks lets consumers customise designs

Consumers are benefiting from the vibrancy of the vinyl flooring market, as manufacturers take advantage of high levels of interest to create new options and keep pace with current and emerging fashion trends. EarthWerks finds that while traditional oak designs and colours are still widely in demand in the UK market, it is starting to see trends in design work and layouts focusing on the creation of personalised floors and work/home spaces. Accordingly, it has developed a special cut programme of coloured feature strips to take design to another level. These strips are designed to enable designers to add flair and panache to interiors, both commercial and residential. The programme is called Mix’iT to convey the dynamics of creation through the collaboration of traditional and contemporary concepts. Herringbone designs are also becoming more and more popular in various sizes, says EarthWerks, which plans to introduce a new design programme in the near future to offer this in its 2mm and 2.5mm dry-back collections.

Herringbone is a hot style for Leoline

Leoline Residential Floors product manager Victoria Hemelaer agrees: “A wander around the Decorex, Designjunction and 100% Design shows during London Design Festival has reinforced that parquet and herringbone styles are big news in wood flooring right now. “As always, Leoline is on top of this trend and our Woodmark collection features three herringbone styles, each with the underfoot comfort and warmth of cushion flooring which is just perfect for the UK climate. From pale through natural and into worn, Louvre brings this latest trend with incredible realism, including a matt finish that helps this floor to look incredibly realistic. “With the super easy maintenance afforded by Superguard, three width options and added slip resistance, Louvre comes with a 10-year warranty. An excellent value floor with great performance credentials and bang-on style, Louvre shows the power of cushion flooring from IVC Group.”

Flower on Flooring Modern classics from Amtico's Signature range

Amtico states that in striving to push the boundaries of design by modernising classic wood effects with innovative finishes, it has created the Signature collection of premium luxury vinyl tiles and planks. Designed and manufactured in Britain, the Signature products allow for the ultimate in creativity, the company states, encompassing a wide variety of colour palettes and laying pattern options – from tradition Basket Weave, to contemporary graphic inspired Woven or Checker Block patterns. To add further interest, on-trend blocks of colour from Amtico’s Signature spectrum colour palette can be combined with traditional wood finishes to create bespoke effects. Prices for Signature products start from £70 per square metre and carry a lifetime warranty. Amtico explains that it aims to provide the residential interiors market with all it needs to make customer dreams a reality. Unilin says since the emergence of realistic wood prints and designs, vinyl flooring has enjoyed an unprecedented rise in popularity. Luxury vinyl flooring now complements its ranges of high-quality laminate and hardwood flooring. The company did not embark on LVT production from strategic considerations, it states; it is regarded as a sector in which it can provide substantial added value. “The expertise we have built up in our other flooring categories gives us a leading edge, particularly in the field of design but also with regard to the technical properties of vinyl floors”, explains Unilin LVT product manager Marieke Callens.

Technology and design create Unilin floors

“Not only that, vinyl is an interesting product category for our partners in the retail chain as well. Being a flexible material, a thorough preparation and careful installation are of the essence when laying a vinyl floor, particularly if you are using glue. This makes it an ideal product for professional floor layers to show off their skills." Karndean Designflooring sales director Scott Cochrane, says: “Following the on-going popularity for upcycling in the home, we were quick to forecast the emerging trend towards reclaimed and repurposed materials in flooring this autumn/winter." Inspired by the natural transformation of wood over time, it has added 12 modern rustic wood designs to its Da Vinci collection. Popular for its narrow wood effect planks, deep bevel and smooth finish, new additions include limed, burnt and smoked looks, alongside two worn and aged driftwood designs. The sophisticated, slim line planks are designed to create both a sense of space in small areas and impact in large, open plan spaces. “We’re expecting the trend for reclaimed natural wood designs to continue into 2016, and bring with it increased demand for fashionable burnt, smoked and limed looks in the home. We’re also predicting large planks, distinctive grain details and subtle textures will be popular with homeowners,” Mr Cochrane concludes. wineo states that Purline offers the first synthetic floor covering made from renewable raw materials and natural fillers. It is designed to be versatile, and resistant to wear, solvents, chemicals and weather effects. The company's product researchers have managed to replace the petrochemical polyols in polyurethane with bio-based polyols made from canola and castor oils, says wineo, without any chlorine, plasticisers or solvents, odour-neutral and almost emission-free.

“We have incorporated some cooler wood tones in our Cavalio Conceptline range of luxury vinyl tiles for the home, Grey Limed Oak and Grey Ash. The designs are ideal for creating a Scandi-style look in contemporary interiors, whether they are straight laid or used to create a pattern such as herringbone.” 64 November 2015

Blended Oak is a Karndean favourite

J2 Flooring managing director Stephen Latham tells Stocklists readers: "We are finding our limed timbers sell extremely well. With the increasing popularity of grey in people's homes, the lime wash effect adds that element to traditional oak floors, therefore combining the two looks to achieve an excellent finish. Mr Latham further states: "Another thing we are being asked a lot to produce are paler woods, like pale limed oak, so our new design Bleached Oak is coming out very shortly, watch this space." Tarkett finds that vinyl and wood flooring trends are closely linked and provides the example of its Atelier collection to illustrate this. This is designed to adapt and age in harmony with indoor climates and lifestyles. Marketing manager Steve Urwin says: “Quality wood flooring will last a lifetime which is why the Atelier collection is sourced from Scandinavian wood. With many intensively farmed, lower quality oak species coming from China, we wanted to provide interior designers with a high calibre and durable parquet flooring option.” Offering multi-layer wood flooring with a handcrafted touch, the collection has been constructed to deliver high stability and resistance. Treated with hardwax oil, this will protect and preserve while creating a distinctive patina that enhances and evolves over time, says Mr Urwin. This bio-polyurethane makes Purline particularly suitable for use in sensitive areas. With its environmental and health compatible properties, it is suitable for the health sector, in hospitals and retirement homes, but also for locations such as nursery schools. "Purline is also a breath of fresh air in the home – not only with its ecological properties, but also due to its modern, colourful and creative designs," says wineo. Polyflor market manager Tavia Spencer says traditional parquet and chevron designs are popular choices for customers who want a classic, statement floor design. These patterns can be achieved with luxury vinyl tiles or with a sheet vinyl product from the company's Designatex range, where the design is built into the floor. Polyflor's smart Rich Oak Parquet

The Designatex collection of textile backed luxury sheet vinyl flooring includes 12 wood effect and six stone effect designs to enhance any room in the home. The wood collection features a variety of wood species and layouts including three classic parquet designs, English Oak Parquet, Laurel Oak Parquet and Rich Oak Parquet. "Real hardwood parquet floors require a significant investment, but our vinyl alternatives are a more affordable option which achieve the same visual effect and are easier to maintain," says Ms Spencer. "These wood designs accurately replicate the warmth, grain detail and natural textures of real wood planks for an authentic finish."

Cavalio national sales manager Barry Donnelly says: "We’re seeing a trend for flooring in smoky grey tones grow in popularity and it’s not surprising why. Grey wood designs are a sophisticated, sleek and a modern alternative to more traditional wood effects.

Designer grey from Cavalio

"We have incorporated some cooler wood tones in our Cavalio Conceptline range of luxury vinyl tiles for the home, Grey Limed Oak and Grey Ash. The designs are ideal for creating a Scandi-style look in contemporary interiors, whether they are straight laid or used to create a pattern such as herringbone. "With 16 wood effects, the Conceptline collection presents a balanced mix of classic and contemporary designs to reflect the natural beauty of timber. Conceptline is designed for every room in the home along with light commercial interiors," Mr Donnelly concludes. Tip Sheared

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet Wool fibre Benefits of Wool Carpet

SAFE

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performance over many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

DURABLE EASYCARE

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

Comfort

COMFORT

Soft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the home against echo and room to room noise transfer.

Safety

The Best Carpet Wool Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as a fibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both British Wool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulky and resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter and particularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the two within a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet. Wool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superior strength and does not need other fibres to improve its performance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets which will perform well in the home.

Fire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets many safety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured in contract locations for this reason. Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor which protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal Environment Indoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air. Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in the atmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote the growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturing industry. Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpet production. Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will produce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients. Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measured against man-made fibres. 69

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

www.flooringone.co.uk Contact: Glenn Harding Tel: 0121 683 1426 glenn.harding@flooringone.co.uk

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions One of the key reasons to join a buying group is to benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. 72

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

www.interfloor.com

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results – some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

www.interfloor.com

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities – and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter

• shedding • pulled loops

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching. N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 74

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought. Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Static Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.

THE STOCKLISTS November 2015

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
