Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE The WOOLSAFE Mark has gone Green! The WOOLSAFE Organisation has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal and EcoLogo in North America, to enable those WOOLSAFE approved products that are ecologically responsible to be recognised and promoted as such.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Regular Maintenance
Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.
Periodic Cleaning
When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company.
If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE- approved products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package: WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
General Rules for Spot Removal • Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth • Scoop up or scrape off solids
Chemspec Europe is one of the first WOOLSAFE Licensees in the UK to have a ‘green’ product certified. It is expected that other products will follow shortly.
For the widest range of WOOLSAFE approved products www.chemspec-europe.com

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment – if unsure, use solvent first • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards • BLOT, do NOT ru b
• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge
• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles • When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer
Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats
The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves. Protective treatments Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular cleaning is still required.
Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDER section.) Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.
A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.
N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
The original carpet tile
SHEDDING
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.
6
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
• shedding • pulled loops
SPROUTING
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
SHADING
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
STATIC
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions.
Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.
A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990). THE STOCKLISTS September 2009

PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.
The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course. THE STOCKLISTS September 2009
FLATTENING
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
SOILING
Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Spillages
- Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil
carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.
T HE R EGENCY
Collection
It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop. Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality. Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
WOVEN
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.
Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home.
Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is BONDED Tip Sheared Level Loop Tip Sheared Level Loop Sheared Level Loop a versatile, textured finish that is idealTipfor plain colours. Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are Velve t • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then used for commercial carpet tiles. sheared to give a smooth finish. Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.interfloor.com
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.
www.interfloor.com
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
Benefits
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards
How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Combination
Crumb
PU foam
Types Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired

We tick all the boxes!
Best-selling products at every price point As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will respond to.
Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across three depots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicated fleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usually within 24 hours.
A long-term programme of substantial investment has created a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully on line.
Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio of products matched to the diverse needs of different customer groups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’s stain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which is bleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absolute confidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year to keep the offering fresh and interesting and respond to consumer trends and colour shifts.
As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors – stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and many others.
the aim is simply to offer customers the best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality
Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing also means they can manage stock more closely and respond to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready for dispatch.
Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation of the product range to consumers with a market-leading modular POS system which they will deliver and design to suit your store.
Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company, Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland.
Furlong believes in working in partnership with their customers to provide products and services that ticks all the boxes.
Investing in quality and service

THE STOCKLISTS August 2009
An Invitation
Be the first to see our exciting new ranges at Harrogate. We are thrilled and excited to be unveiling some fabulous new collections at the forefront of modern carpet design and technology.
RETURN TO SAXONY We are proud to be introducing two brand new 100% polypropylene Saxony qualities, suitable for heavy domestic and medium contract installations. It’s quite a while since Edel Telenzo had a Saxony programme but now this gap in OUR collection is to be plugged. Both are made with Edelon Protect, fully processed by Edel, which we extrude and twist in house. Benefits include: resistance • Stain • Non-allergenic Bleach resistance fade • Hard wearing - suitable • No • for all areas in the home • Moth proof EXCELLENCE is a rich frisée with a lustrous look. CHANTILLY SOFT-TOUCH is a luxurious frisée with the touch and lustre of silk. The colour palettes of both ranges will be unveiled at the show.
THE TILES ARE COMING! Visitors will also get a chance to see for the first time the much-heralded, exciting new tile programme for the contract market, which joins the recently announced launches of New Caesar, New Hercules and Mars. There are six new tiled products in total – a mix of cut and loop piles.
AHEAD OF THE GAME At Edel Telenzo, we’ve always had a reputation for being ahead of the game when it comes to colour and style trends. This is even more true today with full control of the production process from yarn to finished article. We now manufacture our own fibre, twist our own yarn and back all our carpets in house, giving us unrivalled control over the design, style and production process.

National Floor Show PREVIEW Lesson in cheerfulness Pupils at Harrow Gate Primary School in Stockton-on-Tees now have every reason to be bright and cheerful, thanks to their new carpet from Heckmondwike FB and installed by Carpet Time of Darlington.
Colours of the rainbow were chosen by the school, who wanted to make a feature out of their carpet and provide designated colour-coded sections for the children to sit in the reading area of their three classrooms. Supacord by leading UK manufacturer Heckmondwike FB, was the perfect choice with over 40 colour options which included colours to reflect all the shades of the rainbow.
Supacord is widely used for educational buildings across the country because it is designed for areas of heavy wear and tear. Its durability and wide choice of colour makes it equally suitable for office environments, retail outlets, libraries and public buildings. As well as low installation costs, Supacord is designed to offer anti-slip and antistatic properties. Robert Mortimer, Sales Director at Heckmondwike FB, explains: “On this project, Carpet Time has made very clever use of the different colours available within the range to achieve a stunning effect, which should be an inspiration to other schools.” T 01924 406 161

National Floor Show PREVIEW Drive for Britishness As all things ‘home grown in the UK’ continue to be hot news Lancashire-based Cormar Carpets is flying the flag for British manufacturing. One of the few carpet companies to still manufacture all of its products in the UK, Cormar is raising awareness of its home grown heritage with a brand new ‘British Made by Cormar’ logo which will feature on all sample books, swing tags and POS for all units. “We are proud to be one of the few remaining British-made manufacturers,” says David Cormack, marketing director at Cormar Carpets. “It is very important to us to be seen to be delivering British made, high quality, affordable carpets. It seems it is also becoming increasingly important to consumers and retailers.” For the consumer, buying British also means supporting British jobs, something that is an increasing concern to people given the current economic climate.
“It’s nice to know, for example, that buying from Cormar helps to support over 200 jobs in the north of England as well as over 50 van drivers and sales reps nationally. Not only are all Cormar carpets made in the UK but much of the wool in yarn production is British Wool too,” said David. T 01204 881234

Promotional Feature A touch of genius that you simply have to adore The beauty and comfort of vinyl with the ease in installation of laminate come together in adore®touch, the world’s first luxury vinyl plank to feature glueless fitting. No more messy tubs and no more awkward sticky backs, just push to fit and away you go.
profile on the long edge to provide a secure and snug fit, yet with enough tensile strength to ensure that it withstands daily life. The long edge is clicked into place and the short edge is simply pushed down – all you need to install the floor is your own touch.
“With the adore®touch system luxury vinyl planks become a true take-me-home product bringing the same purchasing immediacy to retailers that laminate did, but with the benefits and untarnished reputation of luxury vinyl. The big names operating in the sector have done much to raise the profile of the product in the eye of the consumer and we are now making it an easier and more realistic DIY proposition for them,” continues Paul.
Full of innovation
Of course, it is not just the use of click technology that turns frowns into smiles and all adore®touch is packed full of innovation in other areas – sure to ignite the imaginations of consumers is the approach of adore®touch to the environment. adore®touch employs 67% postconsumer content throughout its construction and it can be completely recycled after its worn out, which with a 25 year residential warranty, is not something that’s likely to happen soon. In fact, with a 0.5mm wear layer adore®touch has a durability in line with high performance commercial LVTs, meaning it is more than capable of taking the abuse of busy households. “The whole success of LVT has been founded on their ability to mimic natural materials without exposing homeowners to the same cost, fitting woes and specialist maintenance that these counterparts exhibit,” says Paul. “We are determined that this remains the case for adore®touch. First and foremost, for the amount of technology packed into it, the floor is incredible value. You would be hard pushed to find a floor this competitive with a 0.5mm wear layer alone and that’s before you even think about its unique position as a floating floor and other technologies.”
“With adore® we wanted to create something unique and something that brings added value to the luxury vinyl plank market” Causing quite a stir around the halls of Harrogate, adore®touch with click technology takes all the advantages of LVT flooring and improves on them, bringing a floating floor that is both partially recycled and fully recyclable, durable, easy to maintain, comfortable and most importantly of all, simple to install.
“With adore® we wanted to create something unique and something that brings added value to the luxury vinyl plank market,” says Paul Brady, CEO Europe.“So with this firm goal in mind we looked at all aspects of vinyl flooring and found that there was large room for improvement with installation. Knowing that laminate flooring had built much of its success on the use of simple and effective click together systems, we saw no reason why this couldn’t be the case with vinyl flooring.
“Of course, things are never quite that simple and so we have worked with leading profile manufacturers for a while to develop the principle on vinyl and we looked at various methods and technologies – the result of our efforts is adore®touch click technology that brings a true floating floor, which is now available in 10 different plank options and with others soon to be released.” Shaped on the latest profile tooling machines to deliver accuracy and quality of installation time after time, adore®touch uses a licensed from The Stocklists from The Stocklists
Not only is adore®touch made to exacting tolerances, it is also employs Nano-Silver and Micro-Ceramic first-in-LVT innovations. Nano-Silver uses the anti-microbial properties of silver and utilises it in particulate form on the wear layer of adore®touch. A technology developed for sheet vinyl in the healthcare sector, Nano-Silver is engineered to kill most germs, helping fight against the build up of bacteria, viruses and even some moulds. And as it is a permanent impregnation rather than a topical treatment, it doesn’t loose its effectiveness over time.
Beneath this lies the Micro-Ceramic wear layer made from microscopic inorganic beads. These beads provides a more durable wear layer that lasts longer and makes adore®touch more resistant to scratching and scuffing. “Of course, not only must the floor perform, it must also look the business and so adore®touch uses only the finest quality printed PVC film and the most realistic photographic textures available,” continues Paul Brady. “The texture of adore®touch features an embossed surface that mimics the grain pattern underneath for improved realism and when installed it is difficult to tell the difference.” With such a strong mixture of innovation and performance, fully backed up by extensive marketing support in the form of display stands, product literature and point of sale, adore®touch is set to change the luxury vinyl tile market for good. After all, everything about adore® is quite simply adorable. For further information contact adore®luxury flooring on 0845 6021881 or visit www.adorefloors.com

National Floor Show seminar programme
A unique opportunity to fast forward into the future of floorcovering is being offered with the free seminar programme at the National Floor Show. Top designers and business leaders are presenting key insights into what will be making our business tick in 2010 and 2011. The Stocklists spoke to some of the top people involved...
SEMINAR:Tuesday, September 8th - 11.00 am
Jeff Banks – A life in design and the future of flooring
Jeff Banks has a major reputation in fashion design from founding the High Street stores like Clobber in the 60s to the modern day Warehouse stores and working with Harvey Nichols and Harrods. He also presents the BBC’s Clothes Show.
“Flooring is a fashion business and clothing and interior design is coinciding more quickly and more consistently,” says Jeff. “There used to be a time lag of maybe two years but now I am re-interpreting fashion designs for rugs at the same time and those products are ready for sale much more quickly. It’s a great adventure.” Rugs have become a passion and something Jeff works on at weekends “almost as a hobby because I really enjoy it so much”. Jeff is working closely with Asiatic to turn his ideas into reality. “they are a great company and love the challenge”, he says. Asiatic will be showcasing the future fashion trends Jeff Banks has designed into their 2010 collections.Themes include “poetic drama” – a sophisticated renaissance of Victorian flora and fauna – and the “spice of life” – a bold, artisan-style expression of rich tribal tones with some experimentation in new textures including leather and metallics.
SEMINAR:Tuesday, September 8th - 12.15 pm and Wednesday 9th - 2.00 pm Victoria Redshaw – Trend forecasting and 2010 design forecasts
Victoria Redshaw’s Scarlet Opus forecasting consultancy specialises in interior trends and Victoria has recently been appointed to add her expertise to the Fun On The Floor campaign, a promotional initiative launched last year to get carpet noticed. “People sometimes think trend forecasting is crystal ball gazing or that the industry gets in a huddle somewhere to force some new style on consumers. It isn’t like that. It’s a social science”, says Victoria.
“Consumers are increasingly savvy and are becoming more design led than celebrity led. There is a big opportunity for carpet as more and more consumers want to break out of the beige box,” she says. Victoria expects design trends in the next two years to be more upbeat and optimistic – more colour and more design and pattern. Like Jeff Banks, she says consumers want to see more connection between flooring and the other fashion they see around them. And she warns carpet companies… “they can’t just get away with re-colouring the old classics. Consumers are looking for something fresh!”.
SEMINAR: Wednesday, September 9th - 3.00 pm
Kate Hardcastle and Richard Gomersall – How to get the best from customers and colleagues
Insight with Passion is the title of the “business transformation” partnership of Kate Hardcastle and Richard Gomersall who will be presenting a seminar on how to get the best from the two Cs – customers and colleagues – to thrive in the challenging economic climate.
“Everyone’s looking for the Harry Potter solution – a magic wand that will solve their problems,” said Richard, “but it’s more like getting fit – exercising a little more each day. “In a recession, there’s a temptation for businesses to hunker down ostrich-like but in a market like this you can easily get washed away. Others go for revolution and try to change everything. But the answer is transformation – more measured and more developed,” he says. Kate promised a “vibrant and exciting” seminar. “It’s not just theory – this is hands-on stuff and we can suggest real fixes and tangible benefits people can take away with them. The case studies we have are inspiring and shows what can be done with creative, commercial judgement.”

The making of a masterpiece The launch of MasterPiece Commercial at Harrogate is a significant extension to the well established MasterPiece Retail planning and estimating system. More throughput can be achieved with less effort by both pure commercial flooring operations and those which do a combination of commercial and retail. In all cases MasterPiece supports the project from start to finish.
Direct measurement take-off. Where architect’s drawings are available in CAD/PDF, these can be imported and measurements taken off directly, with a large saving of time. If measurements have been taken on site using paper, these can be rapidly entered using the freehand drawing facility. Direct measurement entry is also supported, on tablet PC. Planning flexibility: MasterPiece provides both manual and auto-planning for roll and tile products. Product ranges supported include Karndean and Amtico. MasterPiece can not only hold multiple areas (eg carpet, laminate and tile areas) within a job, but also all required permutations.
Costing: Commercial jobs can be costed based on cost price plus margin. Margin can be applied separately to materials and labour, using either Roll or Cut prices. Labour can be costed based either on meterage or on assessed man hours. A costing can readily be switched to use selling prices, with ability to apply discount to all or part of the job. For the fitter: Fitting sheets are formulated automatically. This saves considerable time and provides the fitter with a breakdown of what to invoice on completion. The UK manufacturer specialises in developing costconscious carpets with premium properties. This year, a trio of launches are set to join their best-seller list in the form of Trident, a contemporary heather; Devotion, a modern saxony; and Spectrum, a tough polypropylene twist. The products are distributed by Furlong Flooring whose Neil Valentine commented: “We are in the business of giving retailers the carpets that their customers will want. The emphasis is on value right across the range but we make a point of packing in as much performance as possible so that there are lots of reasons to promote these products.” The new Trident Heathers range is set to capture a major share of this popular market segment and will be the number one focus at the show. “This is probably the finest carpet in its class,” says Neil, “and we’re very excited to be able to bring it to our retailers.” Available in 4m and 5m,Trident Heathers has 12 colours incorporating UV stabiliser and has a 10-year stain and wear guarantee.

Company Profile
A new dawn over Dartmoor
Axminster Carpets is re-inventing itself with the launch of a brand-new British tradition of carpet-making. David Spragg reports. It’s easy to spot the first sign of difference in the ‘new’ Axminster. The word ‘carpets’ no longer appears in the company’s updated logo – it just says Axminster - the ‘c’ word has been removed from it’s strapline – ‘the home of fine carpets’.
Axminster without ‘carpets’ – whatever next? Plenty next in the case of Axminster who has undertaken a root and branch re-evaluation of its business which is transforming the Devon company into a major competitive force for the future. The clue of what’s coming lies in the strapline beneath that new ‘Axminster’ logo - a new mantra – ‘Natural, British, Beautiful.
“Axminster is the best recognised brand in the business and people know what we do,” says sales director Steve Upperton “Now we want them to know much more about how we do it – our values, our approach, our personality. We have a unique opportunity to capitalise on that recognition.”
Steve was brought into Axminster two years ago from a non-flooring background with a clear remit to shake up the traditional family-owned company and to develop it for a more aggressive commercial environment.
‘the home of fine carpets’ Before and after.... but it’s much more than a logo that’s changing at Axminster.
“We started a strategic review two years ago – before the recession – and everything was up for grabs – no sacred cows”, says Steve. “It was a great process which worked out well for us.”
Extensive research among retailers and consumers was commissioned by an external agency to inform the debate and while Axminster scored 100% name recognition and was acknowledged for quality and heritage, it also implied an outdated, old-fashioned view of flooring. “My granny’s carpet” was a phrase that came up too often. The company developed a “brand thumbprint” which revealed core values of Britishness, quality, design strength, reliability and environmental credentials.
In consumer research, the strapline ‘Home of Fine Carpets’ that underscores the company name didn’t mean a lot. “We wanted people to recognise our pedigree and have kept the traditional script for the Axminster brand – after all, it was written by our chairman Simon Dutfield’s grandfather. But now it’s in a more modern, fresher typeface,” said Steve.
contimued overleaf...
The new single-breed wool Swaledale range is a first for carpet - a carbonneutral product that ticks all Aminster’s new boxes of natural, British and beautiful.
Axminster is ambitious to become the first carbon neutral flooring business. “This is not greenwashing and lip service. We just won’t put up with any compromise on it,” says Steve Upperton.

New dawn over Dartmoor continued The new strapline is ‘Natural, British, Beautiful’ and represents the distillation of Axminster’s strengths and how it sees its future.
“We are not interested in any of this branding for it’s own sake,” says Steve. “This has to be a real shift in the way we do business and we have to make this felt throughout our products.” Taking the ‘Natural’ tag first, Axminster is totally committed to that claim.
As an integrated ‘fleece to floor’ business, the wool almost walks into the factory! Axminster operates a yarn business for dyeing and spinning at Buckfast – just 40 miles away in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park, surrounded by sheep. Almost £2m has been invested in environmental systems that allow them to re-use process water 40 times and still let it leave the site clean enough for the River Dart. Even the sludge from the process can be burnt to save energy. Axminster is ambitious to become the first carbon neutral flooring business and is applying techniques across the total business to achieve this. “This is not greenwashing and lip service. We just won’t put up with any compromise on this and we are already well down the track,” says Steve.
The launch of the Swaledale range in September will underline the point – an 80/20 British Wool carpet that is Axminster’s first carbon neutral product. A natural product with a natural look that will retail for around £25 – the environment doesn’t have to come with a high price tag. The Britishness of Axminster is beyond doubt and research reinforces that patriotism is back in fashion as consumers instinctively move to protect their own economy.
“We are not interested in any of this branding for it’s own sake. This has to be a real shift in the way we do business and we have to make this felt throughout our products.”
The ‘Beauty’ that completes Axminster’s new brand package is the “challenging element” – to go beyond the established view of what an Axminster carpet represents and sell it to consumers on its immediate appearance and attraction.
And Axminster have been hyper-active in this department with a new palette of ‘fashion colours’ being rolled out in key ranges such as Simply Natural, the Moorland Collection, the new Devonia Heathers, Princetown and Clovelly.
Axminster has organised its ranges into the categories of Elegance, Contemporary, and Classic which are shown here (left to right) in Filigree, Striata and Turkish Splendour.
“Our support from retailers is huge but we have to give them something back, they need the right products that their customers will notice.” demonstrate all of the new values that the Axminster brand should represent.”
Richard also emphasises the role of High Street independents: “Our support from retailers is huge but we have to give them something back, they need the right products that their customers will notice.” Part of that ‘getting noticed’ agenda is reflected in the new point of sale material and a striking new brochure that deploys a selection of high quality roomset photography that has been commissioned by the company.
Axminster is secure in their ‘quality market’ for residential carpets – addressing the top 20% of the consumer spend – and have reported good sales volumes despite the downturn. While the UK has been flat, contract business has done better and is of increasing importance. Overseas experience has been buoyant including US sales where British Wool has a growing cachet – and in Eastern Europe.
The re-brand runs deep in Devon. Steve Upperton is pragmatic: “There’s no point in having new brand values if they aren’t reflected in everything we do. We aren’t selling ideas. We will persuade people about our values through our products. They are natural, they are British and they are undoubtedly beautiful.”
But the overhaul goes much deeper with new products in Torbay, Royal Dartmouth, Royal Axminster, Persian Dynasty and Filigree. There are new runners and a new plaid design – and completing the more modern mix, a new stripe in Simply Natural.
Beyond the plain and heathers, Axminster are organising their patterned ranges into three distinct categories: Elegance and Classic ranges reflect traditional Axminster designs but the Contemporary ranges have a more modern take on these designs with “a subtle and graceful approach to pattern and colour.” This is where “granny” gets left behind and Axminster is actively seeking a younger customer profile.
“We are still a manufacturing company but now we are also a marketing business, a product-led business,” said Axminster’s marketing manager, Richard Lawrence. “We want our products to clearly 52

SALES AGENTS Can we introduce you to some new business?
Technology and tradition – another transformation Continuing the company’s transformation from fleece to floor, a quiet revolution has been going on right behind the Axminster looms.
The company that’s synonymous with the weaving process has reinvented axminster loom technology with a ‘smart creel’ system that delivers unprecedented speed and flexibility (pictured below).
The creel is the frame of bobbins that sits behind the loom to deliver continuous threads of yarn – a standard set-up for a complex patterned axminster might require up to 14,000 bobbins to be preloaded onto the creel before the loom can start and the length of yarn on each bobbin must be accurately calculated. The highly specialised loading of the creel was a task taking 90 manhours, using a team of 6 people. Axminsters new computercontrolled ‘smart creel’ technology allow one man to load the creel in just 90 minutes! “This is a revolution – a real winner,” says Richard Lawrence. “We now have the capability for a rapid response to customer requirements without holding more stock – and we reduce wastage.”
Already two smart creels are installed and two more systems are in hand in a multi-million pound investment at Axminster.
We’ve been asked to publish a Directory of Agents - to help introduce you to new retail and contract customers in your area and to help manufactuers find new people to cover the ground. Interested? Turn to page 74 now for more details of this opportunity.

News Corking new ideas The new Woodpecker Estilo range of cork floors is a breakthrough in both innovative design and ecological sustainability. Since when it was popular in the 70’s there have been some truly amazing developments with cork as a sustainable resource for the home.
Woodpecker cork (right) is natural, recyclable and biodegradable from cork forests in Portugal. Traditional harvesting methods allow the cork oak to thrive without the use of synthetic herbicides, fertilisers or irrigation. Woodpecker ‘Estilo’ Cork Floating floors have three main components: a top cork layer of 2.5/3 mm on a high density fibreboard core and with a 1.5 or 2mm backing which acts as a built in sound absorbing underlay. The floors use the world renowned patented Uniclic glueless locking system which means the floor can be laid very quickly, can be used immediately after installation and can if necessary be removed and reinstalled many times making it a lifetime’s investment
Now available in 6 stunning colours in a unique tile sized board which incorporates the world renowned Uniclic patented locking system. While cork is an exceptionally comfortable floor to walk on, Woodpecker ‘Estilo’ Cork carries a wear rating of 12,000 revolutions using the Taber test method. This is three times as resilient to the typical wood floor. T 0292088 8223

Step off the gas Flooring contractors have been warned that they are probably over-spending on fuel.
Steve Clarke, general manager of The Fuelcard People, said: “Any flooring contractor without a fuel card will be paying too much for fuel, while even those who already have one may be missing benefits. Anyone who thinks that all fuel cards are the same is wrong and almost certainly over-pays as a consequence. Every day, thousands of contractors’ vans are refuelled at pump prices, although discounts of 10p per litre and more are available.”
Steve Clarke pointed out why over-spending happens: “When fuel cards were first introduced, discounts were rare. Now, savings of 2p to 3p per litre on national average pump prices, and up to 10p on motorway costs, are typical. Depending upon which card a contractor uses, significant savings could be available on their doorstep, but still apply across a national network of 1,600 or more locations.Too many continue to use the non-discount fuel cards they have held for years, rather than reviewing their options and saving money.” “Fuel cards vary,” he said, “and one type can not suit every need. Flooring contractors will not have the same specific needs as a longdistance haulier, bus company or courier firm. Significant per-litre discounts should be just the start of the service, savings and security benefits sought by users.”
He issued a challenge to flooring contractors: “I bet that we can find you a better package of benefits than you already have. Apart from savings, free credit and ease of VAT recovery, there is so much on offer from dedicated account management and 24/7 account access to detailed, customised reports and state-of-the-art security measures.”
The Fuelcard People is one of the few fuel card companies able to offer truly impartial, independent advice, offering a broad choice of cards from leading brands including BP, Esso, Shell,Texaco, Diesel Direct (Keyfuels) and ReD. T 0871 598 0230

Rise to new heights with Stair Make-Over
The ability to quickly transform old and tired staircases with a retro-fit solution will appeal to many consumers. And as more and more people decide to improve rather than move, distributors should be looking towards the benefits of Stair Make-Over, the world’s leading stair refurbishment system. With success in mainland Europe, Stair Make-Over now has a dedicated UK Account Manager on hand to work with distributors and wholesalers in providing retailers with a branded product that has a proven track record.
Ronnie Houben, UK Account Manager explains: “The success we have had with Stair Make-Over on the Continent has encouraged us to commit to the UK market. The Stair Make-Over principle is a simple one with the tread-over-tread approach quickly transforming staircases in one of five different wood-effect laminates. Conveniently packaged in a two-step pack with additional installation packs, Stair Make-Over is a true take-me-home product, allowing distributors and wholesalers to offer retailers a new avenue for generating valuable extra sales.” With the rise in popularity of wood and laminate floorcoverings, particularly in hallways, Stair Make-Over helps homeowners to quickly ‘refresh’ the staircase, immediately improving the impact of one of the first features to be seen when entering the home and providing a suitable match to the floor. Even if carpet or vinyl is used on the hallway or landings, using Stair Make-Over dramatically improves the appearance of staircases.
“For many homes, stairways are a central feature and a worn and creaking staircase can be unattractive and an annoyance, but with Stair Make-Over this issue can be addressed quickly and easily,” continues Ronnie. “With a replacement staircase a significant and costly renovation, Stair Make-Over does the job and at a considerably cheaper cost and in far less time too.” Of course, with such innovation comes the need to inform and educate wholesalers, distributors and retailers, and the buying public. Having built experience of the type and level of marketing required on the continent, Stair MakeOver also brings a complete support package to its stockists.

“For the distributor and wholesaler, as well as multiple retailers, we offer a complete sales training package,” says Ronnie. “I will come to a convenient location and educate sales teams on how best to build upon the interest in Stair MakeOver. This will be through developing product knowledge and exploring sales techniques that best exploit the advantages of the system.
“For the retailer, we offer a very comprehensive marketing package. Within this is included a display stand with a small footprint yet that still shows the system to its full potential. We also have in-store literature and sample packs should they be required. However, we also have one tool designed to drive consumers to store and that is the Stair Make-Over website at www.stairmakeover.com.” The website has been built around the Stair Calculator tool which guides consumers through the entire measurement and ordering process, resulting in a print out that can be taken to the retailer listed as the nearest stockist. This is designed to simplify what could be a confusing decision for the homeowner.
“We wanted to eliminate the need for the retailer to give a home visit to provide an estimate for Stair Make-Over. With the accurate, concise and clear instructions for measuring the staircase and a simple two tread pack, homeowners can do the job themselves with confidence, saving the retailer valuable time and money.” Concludes Ronnie Houben.
The Stair Make-Over system represents an excellent opportunity to attract a new profile of consumer to stores. Backed by a comprehensive support package and a 10-year warranty, Stair Make-Over will become the leading stair refurbishment brand in the UK. For distributors, wholesalers and retailers interested in becoming part of the Stair Make-Over phenomenon contact Ronnie Houben on info@stairmakeover.com or by phone on +31 40208 6222. News Carbon neutral carpet launched Axminster Carpets’ commitment to the environment is now seen in what is a market leading carbon neutral carpet collection – Swaledale.
This unique standing of Swaledale offers retailers the chance to entice an expanding green public into their stores by offering a carpet range with the perfect blend of comfort, performance and sustainability at a price point that is within easy reach of all. The carpet uses wool solely from Swaledale sheep, a hardy breed, with wool that has an inherent amount of grey fibre. This characteristic, which is more pronounced in the lighter shades, gives the carpet a unique look.
In order to achieve a carbon neutral status for the 80/20 wool-rich Swaledale, Axminster Carpets underwent an independent assessment of its carbon footprint for all operations. Aspects examined included not only the energy consumed in the manufacturing process at Axminster Carpets, Curragh Carpets and the Buckfast Spinning Mill, but also the carbon emissions attributed to flights, rail, lorry and car journeys associated with sales and distribution. The results are among the lowest in the industry and are soon set to reduce even more due to advances in manufacturing technology.
Comprising 20 nature inspired colourways, each available both four and five-metre wide and in a 40oz cloth, Swaledale will be presented on its very own display unit emphasising the importance of the introduction:
“Swaledale is a revolution in domestic carpet and so we felt it fitting to give retailers the opportunity to maximise its full potential,” comments Steve Upperton, Sales Director. “The range epitomises our ‘Natural British Beautiful’ motto and is among Axminster Carpets’ most competitively priced carpets, with a suggested retail price of £25m2.” See also Axminster feature, pages 51-53 - ‘A new dawn on Dartmoor’ T 01297 630650
Firm future for felt James Taylor, Managing Director of Texfelt is optimistic that they will see business growth over the next 12 months. Because of the global downturn in demand for products that contain prime polyurethane foam, producers have cut manufacturing thus creating a global shortage of the rebonded raw material and as such price increases as high as 30% in some cases, have been issued by some of the major UK PU underlay manufacturers. “We are also seeing increasing demand, both domestically and commercially, for eco-friendly underlays and for which Texfelt’s Envirolay range is the prefect solution as it has recently undergone a major carbon emissions testing programme,” says James.
According to NUMA (The Needlefelt Underlay Manufacturers Association), recycled felt underlay can represent a more profitable and 'greener' alternative to most other underlay types, especially with the recycled felt product itself being recyclable at the end of its life. One reason for not using felt underlay is because some fitters simply don’t like it or find it hard to cut and opt for the rubber or PU foam equivalents that can substantially more expensive. By opting for the lower cost recycled felt underlay types they can ensure their survival and keep their fitters in work, maintain profitability and improve margins in these difficult times. GoodWeave to replace RugMark label RugMark International, the organisation responsible for implementing the RugMark certification programme, has announced a new GoodWeave label. GoodWeave reflects the organisation’s additional and evolving commitment to environmental and social issues, over and above illegal child labour. The RugMark label will be phased out.
The organisation remains committed to its founding principles of eradicating child labour in the hand-made rug and carpet industry of South Asia, providing education and rehabilitation to rescued child workers and support to their communities. It is currently active in both India and Nepal.
In the UK, active supporters of the label include major importers such as Jacaranda Carpets and Asiatic Carpets, high street chains Laura Ashley and B&Q and an increasing number of interior designers and retailers such as The Rug Company, WovenGround and Knots Interiors.
Sam Towle, UK Director of RugMark, explains the additional relevance the GoodWeave label will have: “Retailers and designers are increasingly concerned about a wider set of issues beyond child labour, such as preventing damage to the environment, and ensuring that adult workers receive decent pay and working conditions.” T 07740 459279

Richard Catt, CEO at the CFA, commented: “The flooring industry is experiencing some truly erratic times; there is business out there, but members are consistently telling me they are having to work even harder to get a slice of the action. Exhibitions like Interbuild are a great place to network and meet key industry people, all under one roof, which is extremely important for the industry.

News Balta blooms in colour for 2010 Balta Rugs, Balta Group’s carpeting division, has presented its new collection for 2010, continuing its strategy of investing in product development and innovation, especially in times of economic crisis.
This year, the focus has clearly been placed on colour. This applies to all of the new collections. Balta Rugs is now offering its customers an abundance of new colours and has developed a number of new fashionable colours specially, such as Copper, Citronella, Lime Green, Cassis Red, Hydrangea and Aubergine. A remarkable number of even brighter and trendier colour combinations were presented, which are sure to provide a fresh and colourful accent to any interior. Balta Rugs has rearranged its range of carpeting in Berclon as part of its initiatives for 2010
In the area of yarn choice and thread interlacing, attention has been given to high-low contrasts by alternating the different heights of piles and loops and through the use of varied interlacing methods or ‘hand carving’ in acrylic carpets.
Daring combinations incorporating different types of yarn will also attract plenty of attention this year. This is reflected in the new Ruby and Emerald collections, for example. In these collections, fine polyester yarns are combined with two entirely new B-Tron yarns to create an ultra soft carpet.

Kathleen Verfaille, designer of Balta Rugs Wool & Heatset and LineA: “Contemporary interiors often make use of neutral colours, such as various shades of beige, grey and white. Our new collection will allow you to add a colourful accent to this. For example: the use of various green colours can give a more modern appearance to an interior that has been furnished predominantly in brown, and a neutral living room can be given quite a boost by adding a splash of purple or aubergine.
This new collection fits in seamlessly with another contemporary trend in colours: these days, we are distinguishing less and less between summer and winter colours.” Ilse Rommel, designer for Balta Rugs Berclon, adds: “People tend to replace their carpeting sooner than before; sometimes even every three or four years. This trend has been signalled some time ago and is still developing quite strongly. Due to this acceleration, our products are becoming more and more sensitive to trends. As market leader, we have been anticipating this by developing new colours and combining different types of yarn.” T 0032 5665 3855

Flower on Flooring News Inspirational ideas
Launches of flooring products are usually the final stage in a creative process that has involved considerable time and effort. With the usual wide selection of new product about to be seen for the first time at Harrogate, this month’s article focuses on the methods and processes employed to bring these to market. Brintons is an ideal starting point to begin this ‘behind the scenes’ report, employing an in-house design team that considers trends and colours within both fashion and interiors. This results in carpets that embrace design influence from contemporary to classic through the creative use of colour and yarn development. Kelly Butler, design manager, said:‘Our inspiration comes from all aspects of life from interiors and the arts, to the catwalks of Paris, through to the influences in entertainment and society as a whole.’ The company continues to use its design archive that dates back to the 1790s and contains more than 100,000 hand painted design papers, carpet samples and pieces of original artwork, providing unique reference points for Brintons’ designers and clients.
Emphasising the importance of research and development, Charles Annable, Brockway’s managing director, said:‘R&D is vital for the health of the trade and we keep a keen eye on the trends in the interiors and fashion world and the developments in yarn technology, so we can ensure that our new products reflect what people want.
Annette Sanders, Edel Telenzo Carpets designer
As manufacturers, we can’t rest on our laurels and rely on popular bestsellers. We’ve seen the benefits that can come from ‘doing something different’ when we worked with a respected colour forecaster on our new Vogue range of co-ordinated stripe and plain carpets last year. It was a step change for Brockway and has proved a huge success for us and our retailers, and has certainly influenced our product development process.’
“We can’t rest on our laurels and rely on popular bestsellers. We’ve seen the benefits that can come from ‘doing something different”
Edel Telenzo utilises the talents of staff members such as product developer and colourist Annette Sanders. ‘As a designer I like to be involved from the first product idea right through to the product going to market,’ she said. The use of 100% wool, polypropylene and polyamide in the company's products makes Sanders’ job ‘very interesting’.
Describing the means used to generate inspiration, Sanders said:‘I am always looking at colours, all around me, every day. I read lots of magazines, visit exhibitions and consult various professional colour researchers such as Wools of New Zealand or the British Wool Board. I am always collecting bits of paper, fabrics, carpet, etc for my colour bank.’ Cultural preferences also have to be considered, she continued, comparing the UK’s attraction to dense, low pile wool carpets to the ‘fluffy and loose’ carpets preferred in Holland. Kährs product manager, Charlotta Olander, described her company’s focus on design and innovation to create high quality product to meet customer expectations.
‘As introducing new products requires multi-level commitment, many parts of the Kährs organisation are involved in the process. For inspiration, the product development team visits interior designers, architects, local customers and global trade shows, ascertaining different views on current and future trends.

‘Kährs’ representatives, in individual local markets, are also a major contributor to ideas for new products.‘In addition to the aesthetic qualities of a new product, there are also numerous technical and environmental considerations. The production development team at Kährs gets involved in developing a suitable manufacturing technique, thus securing Kährs superior product quality.’

Colour and texture are two of the most important considerations for McThree when creating new polypropylene rugs. The heat set process makes this a difficult task, changing the colour and feel.
The company has therefore established its own yarn extrusion facility to speed the development process and keep pace with current design trends.‘The payback for this investment is in avoiding the costly interruptions to ongoing products and the equally costly wasted yarn generated by having to run industrial sized trials for each masterbatch adjustment,’ said McThree’s Robert Witherington.
The company’s additional investments allow it to use a choice of heat setting and twisting processes to create sample rugs. New designs are accordingly swiftly distributed to sales teams and customers to

maximise marketing opportunities. Ian Hammond, sales director of Vorwerk Carpets, explained his company’s ‘thinking’ carpet, shown at the Orgatec exhibition in 2004.
It contained microchips to control elements such as heating, blinds and power. The project was discontinued when the chip supplier was taken over, so Vorwerk began working with a manufacturer of radio frequency identification microchips to include in the Smart Floor textile underlay to automate tasks such as cleaning and transport, which won the Zukunfts award for innovation in Germany.‘Smart Floor never took off - I really do think it was just ahead of its time,’ said Hammond. The company has had more success with its TEXtiles SL tile backing. Made from 60% recycled materials, it is completely recyclable and its light weight also helps to reduce transport’s impact on the environment. Whitestone Weaver’s managing director Steve Byrne said his team keeps a close eye on current trends, with colour the main focus. All new product concepts start in the dye houses to be blended and developed, with input from the design team. He said:‘All our products go to retailers to get opinions and feedback before developing a concept further, as their input is crucial.A new product that’s currently in development is a three ply which we are looking into introducing into our portfolio. This isn’t a new concept to the carpet market but it is something we have never had in our range.’

News New Easyshim fills the gap When a simple idea is turned into an innovative new product, which solves an age-old problem and looks good, you can be fairly sure it will be a winner; judging by initial orders, that is certainly the case with the new Easyshim from Stairrods (UK). The Easyshim creates a flush transition in doorways between a carpet and other floor surfaces such as wood, ceramic tiles, stone and marble. Inevitably the two levels are different but the Easyshim creates a gentle slope from one to the other, which is virtually imperceptible when the carpet is fitted, and facilitates a smooth join. As a result, wheelchair users and vacuum cleaners enjoy a smoother ride and improved access.
There are a variety of specifications from which to choose; the Easyshim is 36” (91cms) wide with an 8” (200mm) ramp and is available in three heights: 1/4” (6mm), 3/8” (9mm) and 1/2” (12mm). Used in conjunction with a z-bar, the Easyshim can bridge a gap of up to 32mm, and for carpets which protrude into hallways side shims are available. In recent years Stairrods (UK) has made a name for itself by introducing products which tackle some thorny fitting problems including Easybind, a simple and smart way to bind carpet, Joints, the high quality door thresholds, and now there is the Easyshim. The net... or not? An e-retailer responds to High Street critics
Pete Samuels, MD of leading online store floor-site.com, takes exception to the retailer hostility to internet trading revealed by our Flooring Forum survey published last month...
With over 40 years experience in the floor coverings trade at various levels including installation, retailing and representation, I am currently MD of an online retailer, so can perhaps look more objectively at this issue.
There will always be Retailers who, rather than blame their own ineptitude, will seek to find reasons why they lose business. These reasons include the power of the large retailers, fitters with direct accounts and now, internet retailing. Your respondent who believes internet retailers to be ‘Cowboys’ displays a breathtaking lack of grasp of the facts. We, as an internet retailer, have spent in excess of £100,000 in the last 3 years or so developing and promoting our websites, which has facilitated a growth turnover of more than 50% year on year during that period.
We hold very substantial stocks in order to supply our customers with next day delivery on a large number of products. We invest in sampling material which we provide to our customers to help them make a purchasing decision. It is a mis-conception that internet retailers all work on a 10% margin for quick, volume turnover. Those that work on that basis are probably diminishing in number, with one notable casualty in recent weeks. We strongly market our own branded products in addition to those products that our customers would expect us 66
September 2009
to offer. All responsible internet retailers will recognise the necessity of sufficient margin to sustain growth.Yes, we will often look at giving a competitive quote when asked to do so. But then, what retailer, when faced with a customer who has already browsed at another shop down the road, would refuse to undercut the price on the basis it would erode margins? So why do customers shop with internet retailers? Is it purely on price? Well no, actually, it is our finding that people are just as likely to purchase from us due to their dissatisfaction with High Street Retailers - this can be because of bad service or a perception that they are being ripped off!! With some retailers charging the equivalent of £270 for a box of gripper, there is often some justification in this.
Despite the adverse comments in your feature regarding internet retailing, it is very interesting to note that 95% of your respondents regularly shop online themselves. Do they not concern themselves that when purchasing that flat screen TV or IPod, or indeed their weekly family food shopping, they are helping to erode the margins of the electrical retailers and the small corner shop down the road? I thought not!

The British Wool column New British Wool Retailer Promotion offers win-win to carpet showroom
British Wool launches its latest retailer prize draw promotion at the National Floor Show with increased incentives for carpet retailers.
This successful prize draw is now in its third year and receiving a steady support from good independent retailers. The six month promotion which commences in October will now give a win-win to the carpet showrooms that participate, offering a weekend break for both the lucky consumer and the retailer. “This is an incentive based promotion for the retailer to offer something to the consumer buying British Wool in ranges manufactured by our licensed manufacturers,” Irfan Khan, promotions manager at the BWMB said. “After looking at the way in which we distributed the prizes, we decided that it needed refining and so this year if a consumer is selected as a winner, then the retailer which sold the carpet will also win a weekend break for two.” “Good retailers are the key to this promotion and we wanted to reward them properly and whilst we have always given a selection of wines to each retailer with a prize draw winner, we wanted it to be a more substantial reward.”
Additionally, there will also be a one-off prize for the retailer that sends in the most entries to the promotion following analysis of the entries after the draw.
“We noticed that some retailers are sending in a lot of entries and these tend to be the ones that fill in the forms on behalf of their customer and send it out to the customer with their invoice – so all the customer has to do is sign it and send it off in the post paid envelope provided.”
The new promotion commences in October. Retailers wishing to register for the promotion should visit the British Wool stand at the NFS – C18 or contact the marketing department on 01274 688666.
Skipton retailer and consumer delighted with British Wool win It was clear that Mrs Gains was thrilled with her win when she was presented with her Marriott vouchers at the Carpet Company in Skipton. – her smile said it all. She had just won a weekend for two at her own choice of the luxury Marriott hotels across both the UK and Europe in the last British Wool Prize Draw Promotion
Mrs Val Gains (right), a consumer winner in the British Wool Marriott prize draw with Judith Wright of the Carpet Company in Skipton.
“It is a fabulous prize and I have been telling everyone that I have won,” said Mrs Gains. “We have completely revamped our home this year including the floors. We kept coming in and out of the shop over a six month period until we finally decided on the Penthouse Vermont range.”
Typical of many consumers she had chosen a plain neutral shade in an earthy brown to go through the living room, stairs and landing but in line with more current trends had used hard flooring in other downstairs areas such as the hall and dining room. “I like that you can mix and match the flooring in the home but I wanted to keep the warmth and comfort value of carpet and I like the feel of wool.”
Judith Wright who owns the Carpet Company with her husband John and is assisted by her two sons said “We mainly sell wool here, it is a rural community and so most people understand about wool.” Judith has a long history in the carpet retail business, her father owned a shop in Bradford and her husband was a carpet fitter for that shop before they set up in Skipton. They have a light, spacious showroom and this helps to display the product clearly and they offer a very personal and friendly family service. On the trend for carpet Judith said she felt that carpet remained popular and that pattern had been a good seller in recent months. “The middle to older consumer still like pattern and during the difficult economy, they have been the mainstay of the market, so pattern has done well for us lately.” On the success of her customer she said, “We are thrilled that one of our customers is a winner – we sent the entries out with the invoice and as you can see, it clearly works!”

OF THE TRADE
Bridgette Kelly
Press and Public Relations Manager British Wool marketing Board The global economy and the effect of that on our housing market. The last twelve months has highlighted our total vulnerability to external influences. I read an item recently by the economist that predicted this recession as far back as 2006 and he said he felt that recovery would follow a W shape – meaning, I believe, that we would recover, fall and recover again before we reached a point of stability. It sounds doom ridden but he made a lot of sense because we are seeing that pattern form now.
“
How do you see exchange rates affecting business over the next year?
Wool is a globally traded commodity and so the exchange rate has long affected our business. When the pound was strong against the dollar – the currency in which wool is traded internationally; British Wool appeared expensive against other wools. Manufacturers in Europe certainly wish that the UK was in the Euro and the European spinning industry has certainly suffered in this climate. I don’t think there is a win-win in exchange rates; the next twelve months will be tough.
Is price winning over design/quality?
Price point selling is destructive to the long-term profitability of carpet manufacturers, spinners and the whole wool industry. If you sell cheap, it will have no consumer value and they will always want cheaper. However, design and quality are highly marketable to today’s image conscious consumer. I think most of the carpet industry understands the need to reposition the product.
Are there too many people making carpet now?
I work across the global market and there are certainly a lot of carpet manufacturers – the endless carpet factories in Dalton Georgia make ours pale into insignificance. The UK has experienced huge rationalisation and I think most manufacturers have successfully streamlined their businesses. There may be some casualties yet but on the whole I think it is the right size, we just need the economy to improve.
“Design and quality are highly marketable to today’s image conscious consumer. The carpet industry understands the need to reposition the product.” In all your time in the trade, what has most surprised you?
I think it is surprising that many carpet manufacturers still don’t know what wool is in their yarn; bearing in mind that the wool will dictate the quality of the carpet. Most other industries will meticulously specify materials to ensure that productivity/life expectancy is met. In comparison the carpet industry is behind on that front.
“
What’s the key market issue/challenge today?
And most disappointed you?
The marketing disappoints me – because so many have great product but the marketing can be weak or non-existent. Cost, of course is part of the reason but the reality is that today we live in a world where marketing really makes a difference.
Are there enough women in the trade given that most purchase decisions are made by women?
Well, given my earlier answer, I guess the answer has to be no. Although there are quite a few women in design roles and some in marketing, the carpet trade certainly has a lot of suits! Sometimes the female perspective is clearly missing and I think that is a mistake for an industry that services the interiors business.
What’s the single most important key to success in flooring?
What’s your favourite flooring product (yours or someone else’s)?
High standards – on every front – personal, product, service and customer relations.Without these, you may as well give up and go home.
If you could ask retailers to change one thing, what would it be?
As a student, I worked with a brilliant chef in his restaurant and through him I learned how to cook. I very nearly chose that as my career because I loved it and the best bit of my day is pulling my apron on, chopping some herbs, sizzling a pan and popping a cork.
Wool carpet – of course! I like to see woven wool carpet with inspired design and tufted ranges with clever yarn innovation and great texture. Currently, I am very taken with the stripe ranges that a few of our licensees have launched.
I have met some excellent retailers that really know their carpet. But if there is one thing that I would suggest to them it would be to remember that they are mainly selling to women and try and adapt their sales technique – to making the buying of their new carpet an ‘experience’, rather than a process. from The Stocklists
If you didn’t work in this industry, what would have been your second choice career? (Should it have been!?)
What’s the oddest thing that’s ever happened to you in the trade?
I started this job and ten days later, I was on a plane to Las Vegas to a trade show with a group of people I didn’t know. It was a very strange beginning to a new job. September 2009

News Big shots at FTBA The Furnishing Trades Benevolent Association is another £10,000 better off thanks to a cracking good day at Big Shots. The FTBA’s annual clay pigeon shooting competition attracted some 30 teams to the Holland & Holland grounds at Northwood Middlesex. It proved an especially good day for hot shot regulars Luke and Tracey Riddington and their team,The Lost Samurai. Tracey took Top Female Gun, Luke Top Male Gun and with their team mates Nick Cancea and Thosh Kellett, the foursome scooped both the Top Team prize and Top Flurry.
“The team always does well but this year they pretty well wiped the board,” said organiser David Langford. “It was a great day, a great opportunity for people right across the industry to mix and network and a successful fundraiser for the FTBA to boot. This was the 15th year that the competition has been held and brings the total raised for the charity over that time to well over £380,000.” As well as monies raised through entry fees, the charity’s coffers were swelled by a £10K sponsorship from The Clare Foundation plus support from Willis & Gambier, Morris Furniture, Millbrook Beds, Furniture Village, Panaz, Gainsborough,Vi-Spring, Mark Webster Designs, Kyoto Futons and Dovetail Wood. Between them the auctions, raffle and practice stands raised £3,400. Said David: “Many thanks go to the Riddingtons who paid for a new trophy for our Top Female Gun.The original was lost a few years ago.” T 020 7256 5954

He was a director of Ulster Carpet Mills Holdings Ltd and was one of the three sons of George Walter Wilson who founded the company in 1937. His surviving brothers are Walter and Edward. News Smart vinyl cushioned with felt IVC Group has lifted the lid on yet another innovation in vinyl flooring – Texmark - a carefully engineered alternative to cushion backed PVC.
Thanks to a clever felt backing,Texmark not only has excellent thermal insulation and acoustic properties, it is also blessed with high levels of underfoot comfort. And with IVC Group’s usual attention to performance and style, it retains all the qualities that make IVC Group’s vinyl floorcoverings such an attractive proposition.
Backed with attractive eye-catching point of sale material for retailers,Texmark comes in 18 attractive colourways and in a wide choice of two, three and four-metre widths to suit everywhere from corridors, to bathrooms, kitchens, lounges and bedrooms.
Known as Luxatex®, the backing combines with other technology, including the Super Guard stain resistant treatment and a mechanical emboss, to make Texmark a feature-packed vinyl floor capable of meeting expectations of consumers time after time. “Texmark has been developed to bring homes a floor that is not only comfortable and stylish, but also one that is extremely practical. To give peace of mind,Texmark has been given an R10 slip resistance rating and is warranted for 10 years,” comments Caroline Wille, Product Manager “That said the special felt backing used on Texmark has advantages for installation too.” Normal vinyl flooring can react with certain types of subfloor such as thermoplastic tiles, causing staining and migration through the floor. However, the felt backing on Texmark forms a barrier to prevent this. This quality can lead to cost savings on the uplift and preparation of subfloors on projects such as social housing. The stair’s the star Stair Make-Over brings a unique opportunity for distributors, wholesalers and retailers to excite a new audience of homeowners with a great new product that can help to transform homes in a jiffy.
Stair Make-Over addresses one of the most overlooked areas of the home and one of the most tricky to beautify – the stairs. A simple tread-over-tread retrofit system, Stair Make-Over makes it possible for homeowners to effortlessly transform staircases and retailers, distributors and wholesalers to effortlessly improve sales.
“Stair Make-Over is a unique branded product that has already had phenomenal success on the continent,” says Ronnie Houben, UK Account Manager. “With five different wood-effect laminates to choose from, it’s easy to match décor and taste and Stair Make-Over can even work on curved and irregular shaped staircases.”
Backed by a comprehensive training package for early adopters, Stair Make-Over features a 10-year guarantee, which is more than can be said of a new staircase. “We are aware that when something is innovative it is also unfamiliar to consumers and they need reassurance that the product will meet their expectations. Even though staircases are high traffic locations and Stair MakeOver is a DIY product, we felt it important that consumers had complete peace of mind when purchasing.” Explains Ronnie. Stair Make-Over is also backed by the website at www.stairmakeover.com.The website has been built around the Stair Calculator tool which guides consumers through the entire measurement and ordering process, resulting in a print out that can be taken to the retailer listed as the nearest stockist. This is designed to simplify what could be a confusing decision for the homeowner. Allied fails to find buyers No buyers have been found for the bulk of Allied Carpets stores after the troubled retailer went into administration last month – over 140 stores are now set to close their doors with the loss of 850 jobs.
As reported in The Stocklists last month, a spin-off company Allied Carpets Retail has been used as a vehicle to buy 51 of the more viable stores and other sales are under negotiation with commentators expecting the ‘new Allied’ could own up to 70 outlets.
Adminstrators BDO Stoy Hayward reported a “strong level of intitial interest” but partner Dermot Power commented: “Many of those who operate in the same industry haven’t been comfortable taking the step to extend their portfolio in such a tough trading climate.” from The Stocklists

SALES AGENTS Can we introduce you to some new business?
The Stocklists has been asked to consider running a directory of Agents for the flooring industry to compliment the other information features in our magazine. The Directory would help agents with multiple agencies get better known among retailers in their areas - and also indicate if they were available to take on representation for other manufacturers/suppliers in these territories. It would be published monthly and indexed by region - just like the Wholesalers Guide on page 10 and 11 of this magazine If there is sufficient interest, we’ll run the Agents Directory free of charge for three months and then charge £12.50 per month – payable annually at £150 in advance. Register early to get 3 months free!
The feature will start in July so Agents who register early will get the benefit of 3 months free. We’ll have to start charging from the October issue onwards. Please complete the form below and faxback to 01482 659397 – or email the same details to diane@mayvillepublishing.co.uk Name (first name, surname):
