Welcome!
Steve & Christina Koedam / Koedam Cattle Company
Koedam Cattle Co. was started by Steve & Christina Koedam after exiting dairy farming in late 2011. In 2012, a small herd of commercial cattle were purchased with the first registered Red Angus in 2013. Koedam Cattle Co. is located in SW Minnesota, near Leota, roughly 50 miles NW of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Koedam Family has farmed in the area over 100 years and currently calve 100+ cows, 20-30 heifers per year both registered Red Angus and commercial. They also crop farm raising corn, soybeans and alfalfa. They strive to put together a quality herd to produce quality replacement females and bulls for their customers and have sold replacement cows/heifers private treaty. Their first bull sale started with a trip to the Sioux Empire Farm Show (they have since joined the Red Reckoning group for bull sales) and the ROP/MN Great Northern for female sales. 3SCC Laser Focused C171 has had the biggest impact on the Koedam herd to date, producing tremendous females and bulls. The Koedams are looking forward to seeing the first progeny from bred heifers/cows purchased in 2022 from W Sunrise Angus, Green Mountain Red Angus, Craig Davis and Reisdorfer Red Angus. Steve was recently elected as Vice President of the Minnesota Red Angus Association and enjoys his Red Angus cattle and welcomes any questions and/or visiting about their program.
Dale, Dave, Gary & Brock Kemen / Kemen Farms Red Angus
Koedam Kemen
The Kemen Farms Red Angus operation consists of brothers Dale, Dave, Gary and Dale’s son Brock in a farming partnership that grows corn, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa in a rotational crop regiment. Kemen Farms first registered Red Angus purchase was a group of 20 bred heifers from Sonstegard Cattle Co. in 1993 making this their 30th year in the business. They currently run 300 cows with approximately 240 of them being registered Red Angus and the balance high percentage Red Angus commercial females with a few black cows. They offer a high-quality set of registered bred heifers annually in the ROP/GN Great Northern Sale in Brookings, South Dakota. Dave Kemen served for 23 years on the Midwest Cattlemen’s board and was recently elected to President of the Minnesota Red Angus Association. Kemen Farms is responsible for feeding and developing the Spring Red Reckoning bulls from October to late February where the bulls are clipped, scanned and fertility tested before they are shipped to southern Iowa and the Star G Ranch for DVAuction videos. In the inaugural Red Reckoning Sale in April 2021, Kemen Farms had the 2 top selling bulls (both Stockmarket sons) — $14,500 LLRA Limit Up and $12,000 KFRA H2 Mr Stockmarket. Dave will be at the Red Reckoning Auction on March 17th and 18th to answer any questions you may have regarding the feeding of the Spring bulls and the Kemen Farms Red Angus program.
Lisa & Kyle Gilchrist / Star G Ranch, Inc
Gilchrist
The Gilchrist family have been raising registered Red Angus cattle since 1973 and started with Kyle’s parents, Kenneth and Janet Gilchrist producing bulls for Pioneer Beef Cattle in the ‘70s and then Mid America Cattle Co. in the ‘80s. Today, Lisa and Kyle operate Star G Ranch as a grass and hay operation, growing no row crops and utilizing the easy fleshing abilities of Red Angus genetics to maximize outputs through their efficiencies. After testing and selling bulls in Oklahoma and Texas for 20 years with the Red Alliance group, Lisa and Kyle Gilchrist/Star G Ranch built their own auction facility and began holding auctions and selling their bulls in the Red Reckoning Sales in the spring of 2021. The Star G Ranch herd bull battery includes Gilchrist Royal Peacock (owned with Peacock Cattle Co of Iowa), Chappell Home Run, the $19,000 Chappell Red Angus bull from Pennsylvania, co-owned with Kemen Farms of Minnesota and LLRA Limit Up, the $14,500 top seller in the 2021 Red Reckoning Sale owned with Sonstegard Cattle Co -- Minnesota. Make plans to attend either the March 18th Red Reckoning Sale or the October 14th Star G Ranch & Friends Sale and help them celebrate their 50th anniversary in the registered Red Angus business!

The Importance of Investing in a Bull
With the current costs of all farm and agricultural inputs, it is imperative that expenses are analyzed carefully to maximize returns on your investment. In a beef operation there are many factors and many decisions to be made. The single biggest change you can make in your beef operation is the bull you select to use on your cowherd. Your bull selection will influence 50% of your entire calf crop next year. If you make a mistake, it can certainly take your program backwards or with the right decision, propel your genetics into future profits. With feed costs and health supplies at all-time highs, doesn’t it make sense to maximize the genetics you are feeding it to? It doesn’t cost any more to feed a good animal than it does a poor one. The return on superior genetics vs. inferior genetics should be a calculated factor that is never taken lightly. Too many cattle operations do not take into account the importance of investing in either semen for artificially breeding their cows or the bulls that they select. If you retain your own heifers, the genetics you select is even more important than if you simply load them up and take them to a sale barn.
The Red Reckoning program offers bulls that are selected from over 400 registered Red Angus cows. We only select the top 50 bulls for our Spring Red Reckoning Auction and offer both Fall born 18 month old bulls and yearlings. All of the bulls sell with genomically enhanced EPDS, are ultrasound scanned for carcass measurements, are evaluated for foot soundness and leg structural correctness, are semen checked and every bull in the auction has passed a breeding soundness exam and is ready to go breed cows or heifers from day 1. We stand behind our bulls. If you have a problem, call us and we will make it right. Between the 3 Red Reckoning breeders, we have been in the registered Red Angus business for over 90 years and the reason is our acute attention to the cowherd. We want your business and invite you to come check out our bulls and not only become customers but friends as well.
If you are interested in developing a commercial female program that is eligible to be in the forefront of our auctions in the future, please be sure and contact Kyle Gilchrist, Dave Kemen or Steve Koedam. We would be happy to discuss breeding scenarios, health requirements and calving seasons that will best fit your program and maximum the return for your investment.
If you have suggestions for future breeding of Red Angus bulls, please contact Dave, Kyle or Steve. We want to supply Red Angus bulls that fit your needs in the future.
Thank you for your interest in our program

KFRA MR DAWSON K57 Lot 8
There are 2 Lorenzen Gladiator E800 sons in this offering (Lot 7 & 34) and both exhibit EXTREME muscle composition and thickness. Lorenzen Gladiator E800 comes from the same cow family that produced Gilchrist High Endurance (sire of G. Royal Peacock) and was the high-selling bull in the 2018 Lorenzen / VF Red Angus Bull Sale in California. If you like the “clubby calf look”, be sure and check out both of these Gladiator sons at the Star G Ranch loaded with meat and muscle.
The strength of the Red Reckoning bull offering comes from the diversity of the 3 Red Angus breeding programs and the consistency of the 400+ cows that back the bulls we offer in both spring and fall auctions. Kemen Farms dependably develop a wide variety of A.I. sired calves each year, including this HXC Dawson son. Lot 8 is another solid herd bull prospect posting a 112 REA ratio and a 125 IMF ratio! As an added bonus, his dam has a 356 day Calving Interval.
GILCHRIST ROYAL PEACOCK Lot
Royal Peacock is a bull that we used as a yearling to breed the Star G Ranch fall cowherd. His 727 lb. weaning weight and 1292 lb. yearling weight tweaked our interest but once scanned, his astounding 17.5 sq. in. ribeye made him an immediate herd bull prospect for our program. Dave Wilcox & Chris Hillenga both saw him in January 2022 at 4 1/2 months of age and purchased one-half interest in him on the spot for their Peacock Cattle Co. program. Royal Peacock’s dam is our all-time top producing Donor Matron – VF Flo Marie 1650-245 -- who was a purchase from the 2017 VF Red Angus Production Sale in Terrebonne, Oregon. Her 2018 Drought Breaker natural bull calf sold to Jack Clements – Groveton, Texas; two of her sons (913G a Grand Prairie & 015H a High Endurance) sold to Bar Y Ranch – Keosauqua, Iowa; 907G a Grand Prairie son sold to Erwin Farms – New Virginia, Iowa and another High Endurance full brother – Gilchrist Enduring All 016H was our high selling bull in the March 2022 Red Reckoning Sale to Cress Farms – Center Point, Iowa. The sire to these calves – Gilchrist High Endurance -- was the $27,500 high-selling bull from the 2017 Red Alliance Sale in Shawnee, Oklahoma and continues to sire calves that dominate our weaning and yearling pens. We are selling a one-third semen interest and Spring Pasture Walking Rights in Lot 9. The new owner becomes partners with the Star G Ranch & Peacock Cattle Co. and shares 33% semen revenue in this great stud bull. No semen has been sold or released prior to March 18, 2023. Get in on the ground floor and let this astounding 17.5 sq. inch ribeye bull add carcass dimension to your future Red Angus program!

If this bull was RED, we certainly would not be selling 100% of him and would be using him heavily in the Star G Ranch program. We are retaining one collection on him at our expense and the buyer’s convenience and plan to implement his genetics into our cowherd. His dam was a purchase from the 2020 Mile High Classic Auction from Sonstegard Cattle Co. and is a maternal sister to 3SCC Domain! Eucla G128 has played an integral part in our Donor Program the last couple of years, placing three daughters in our bred heifer pen and five sons in this 2023 Red Reckoning offering. His sire – GAR Ashland -- is the first Black Angus bull ever used in our 50 year history in the Red Angus business and was selected for carcass quality . . . . . . .and he paid off! Don’t miss his 17.5 sq. in. REA (ratio 120) and 2.90 IMF (ratio 124). An ET flushmate sister was equally impressive, scanning a riveting 13.66 sq. in. REA measurement to ratio 132 and a 5.61 IMF to ratio 155! Even though she is black in color, don’t think we won’t utilize her in our future Donor Pen. Lot 28 kicks off a string of 7 Calving Ease Bulls that will be suitable for use on heifers but certainly has the growth traits and scan data to use on mature cows without giving up performance. 132J is the natural calf from the Star G Ranch Donor Cow – 3SCC Eucla G128 – who is a maternal sister to 3SCC Domain A163, one of the highest used sires in the Red Angus breed, posting 4,880 registered calves to date. His sire – LSF SRR Fantastic 6206G –is our new herd bull owned with Kemen Farms and he is siring some exceptional calves for both operations. 132J’s 59 lb. BW to 1247 lb. YW and 15.5 sq. in.REA scan makes him one of the top prospects to come out of this 2023 Red Reckoning Sale.
GILCHRIST DEALER 114J Lot 29
114J is a Final Deal son from our Eucla G128 Donor Cow and will get your attention with his 16.2 sq. in. REA scan. We purchased the Final Deal semen from the NWSS Frozen Genetics auction specifically to mate to 3SCC Eucla G128. If you are not sure if you want to use a RED or black Angus bull, this is the one for you – he is the new “purple Angus” with Red Angus genetics from black parentage. Don’t miss looking him up on sale day.
GILCHRIST BLACK ASHLAND 101J Lot
30
STRG / 101J 82 100% AR BD: 8/13/21
RAAA#4565391
An ET flushmate brother to Lot 10 with EPDs as good as you can make them, posting a top 1% GM, WW, YW & MARB and top 3% ProS, ADG, CW & REA! His scans are equally impressive with a 14.9 sq. in. REA to ratio 102 and a 3.92 IMF to ratio 167. I don’t usually make excuses for an animal but will point out that his dam died a month and a half before weaning, drastically reducing his actual weaning weight – he survived on his own eating hay only for the last 45 days before his contemporary group was weaned.
GILCHRIST FINAL DEAL 105J Lot
105J is a sleep-all-night heifer bull that offers added age-advantage to cover more females in his first breeding season. He is an ET Flushmate brother to Lot 29 and a maternal brother to Lots 10 & 30. The bonus to using these Eucla G128 (maternal sister to 3SCC Domain A163) sons are the daughters they will produce. His 19 CED places him in the top 1% of the entire breed and his -3.9 BW in the top 16%.
GILCHRIST ENDURING TIME 157J Lot 32
Lot 32 is a son of a “Juana” female from Green Mountain Red Angus of Montana. She fleshes extremely easy and is a top calf producer in the herd. His sire is a paternal brother to Gilchrist High Endurance, the $27,500 Red Alliance bull (and sire to Royal Peacock – Lot 9 in this offering). A paternal sister to Lot 157J was a high seller in the 2022 SERAA Grasstime Auction in Cullman, Alabama.
GILCHRIST DOC 106J Lot 33
106J is a son of a past Star G Ranch Donor Cow – Harmonys Windsong 111 that has 57 registered progeny to date. 106J’s sire was the 2019 NWSS Grand Champion Bull where for the first time in history full siblings were National Champions (Andras Fusion X DAMAR Mimi W085) as his sister was Grand Champion Female that same day in Denver. He expresses an extremely long body with a little extra frame – you won’t have trouble finding him in the sale pen.
GILCHRIST GLADIATOR 131J Lot 34
This bull is built like a brick outhouse! He is thick, heavy muscled, and wide set in his leg set and stance. His data certainly indicates that he would work on heifers and his dam is a perfect uddered female with great fleshing ability. His sire is one of the heaviest muscled bulls we have ever owned and you can see it passing on to this great herd bull prospect. He is a paternal brother to Lot 7.
