First, let me say “Happy New Year”! The spring-summer 2023 season certainly looks like the year that cattle prices will explode after extreme droughts around the country and the liquidation of thousands of beef cows in order for ranchers to survive. The restocking phase of the beef business always offers opportunities to upgrade genetics and improve the quality of your past cow herds.

Since 2019 and the Covid pandemic, cattle selling techniques are rapidly changing with more and more internet transactions and less and less direct contact between buyers and sellers. The positive in this is the markets that have opened up with buyers from around the globe able to tune in and buy cattle with a click of the button. The downside is the lack of personal representation and buyer/seller interaction regarding the transaction of cattle sales. Gilchrist Auction Co. started in 1984 and we are entering our 39th year in the auction business. Our Red Angus cattle initiation was in 1973 as Ken Gilchrist & Son (and then J Bar K Ranch) and 2023 will be the Star G Ranch operation’s 50th year raising registered Red Angus cattle. I can tell you that our plans are to continue doing business through “live” auctions with reputable auctioneers, ringmen and buyer representatives and people we know and trust. I am not about to turn our businesses over to a computer to handle the selling of our cattle with no interaction, representation or people you can shake hands with at the end of the day and agree to “the deal”.
