Gary got his start in the beef business with commercial cows back in 1973. In the process of purchasing Charlois bulls through Pioneer. Gary became familiar with Red Angus cattle at the Pioneer Bull test station in Inwood, IA. He liked the Red Angus for their calm dispositions and excellent maternal and mothering ability. The first Red Angus cows were purchased from Cornie Folkerts at Inwood IA, but they were not registered females. The first registered females were bought from Pioneer at the research farm near Des Moines, IA, and River Ranch Red Angus was founded. The herd grew to around 100 head of females with additional purchases from MidAmerica Cattle Co. and Bieber Red Angus. There were also 100 commercial cows in the operation during the 1980’s. In the late 1980’s Gary sold the balance of his commercial cows and began building the Registered Red Angus herd. The herd increased over time and in 1996 River Ranch Red Angus had its first production sale at Web Livestock in Benson, MN. In 2002 he built a shop and sale facility and moved the production sale to the farm. Shortly after Gary, Elaine, Tory and Tyler changed the name from River Ranch and formed Sonstegard Cattle Co LLC, a partnership that is still going strong today.
Gary is very passionate about the Red Angus breed and was heavily involved in both the local and national associations. He was instrumental in starting the MN Red Angus Association and putting together the first state sale. After serving as president of the MNRA Gary also served two terms on the RAAA national board as a director. He also has been honored by the RAAA winning both the Breeder of the Year award and also the Pioneer Breeder of the Year award as well.
The genetic value in the above mentioned is that you can buy halter broke heifers ready to take down the show trail and let them increase in value as future Donor Matrons or extremely great Brood Cows. Come join the fun – the ROP is about to get “out of control” with Red Angus breeder enthusiasm.
