seasons.

Winter arrived at our house. My kids were very excited by the fresh blanket of snow; my husband was not. It is always funny to me how feelings and thoughts shift as we move through the seasons. They are a nudge to keep pushing toward the next goal and an unspoken reminder of things still waiting to be crossed off the ‘to do’ list. The changing of the seasons can make you look back fondly on the last few months, wish for more of that (whatever that may have been), all the while looking forward to the months to come. I think that is Father Time’s secret to moving at such a rapid pace - just when we get comfortable, it snows! We are always adapting to this business, always moving our targets and planning for the next season. This month, our profile features are great examples of the success that comes from growth and change in every season. Give them a read; they’ll make you want to think big! And speaking of thinking big, we have exciting news to share. The Stockman has been named the official publication of The NebraskaN Livestock Show being held January 9-24, 2021, in Grand Island, Nebraska! We are excited to tackle this role, a first for us. So stay tuned for the latest updates and info on the show. We’ve got a lot of great info inside, so don’t be afraid to pass us around your Thanksgiving table; we aren’t afraid of a gravy stain.

A focus on fundamentals sets the tone at Amdahl Angus & Hereford.

______ “My first 4-H calf was a Purple Ribbon Hereford steer, so I guess the seeds were planted a long time ago that I would be in the Hereford business.”

______ Tim Amdahl Amdahl Angus & Hereford

From fellow cattlemen and women who became mentors to hearing how satisfied ranchers were with the purchase of Amdahl genetics to finding a common ground with other ranching families they have met over the years, the people associated with the cattle business is as much of a highpoint for this Christian-focused family as is raising a high-selling bull. around the Christian faith, hard work, willingness to help others, and exposure to the political world. “We tried to create the most well-rounded atmosphere for our children and the ranching life allowed us to do so.” In addition to ranching, Amdahl served as the South Dakota State Land Commissioner from 1986-1991.

1972. Tim’s dad farmed and fed out cattle. The family were pioneers in marketing beef through a reefer truck delivering to individuals and grocery stores in four mid-western states. Active in FFA, Tim was honored to win the Star Farmer of America in 1976 with his Angus

used the bonus he received when he made Navy Seal to purchase cattle, rather unusual,” says Tim.

He remembers first incorporating AI nearly 45 years ago and in 1978 had some of the first embryo transfer offspring produced in South Dakota. Building his cowherd in the 70s and 80s, he later moved his family and herd to western South Dakota just east of Rapid City in 1991. There, he had the opportunity to grow his cow numbers to 250 Angus cows and start marketing bulls into larger commercial herds.

All five of Tim and Marcia’s children helped around the ranch and grew to love the livestock industry. “Working cattle one night, it was about 8 p.m. and one of the kids said, ‘Dad, I guess we have to keep working as there is no second shift to relieve us’,” recalls Tim. The

In 2014, when the former Baker Hereford Ranch north of Rapid City, S.D., came up for sale, the Amdahl family jumped at the opportunity to expand their acreage and cow numbers purchasing the ranch which is now the home of Amdahl Angus and Herefords. This was a perfect fit for expansion especially with their children expressing interest in joining the operation. Along with the ranch, they purchased a select group of Baker’s top females in the ranch

SELECTION AND GENETICS “We want our bulls to mark each calf like the next,” says Tim. Consistency is the goal. The combination of performance, the right look, and profitability along with fertility and maternal traits are the key fundamentals they seek. “It takes a lot of money to keep a cow in production, so longevity and the traits that lead to long production are key.”

The Amdahl program has had marked success with proven cattle. The program is one of the most DNA tested herds in the country providing the key performance data needed to generate genomic EPDs. The top EPD cow in the

Angus breed Amdahl Erica Hickok 104-544, was bred and raised by them, ranking her in the top 1% for multiple traits and is heavily used in embryo transfer. A five-star rating system, where bulls and females are ranked for

With a cow herd close to 500 head, they annually market 150 two-year-old and yearling bulls in a November production sale. “Having fought frigid temps two years in a row and the hectic schedule of preparing for a bull sale while trying to focus on calving, we made the decision to move our sale to November.” 2019 was the first fall sale for the family, and it was a success. Offering superior customer service, Amdahls will keep bulls purchased in the sale until spring, semen-test, then deliver them to the ranchers. This was standard protocol for the program before, but now with the November sale, they will maintain the bulls for an additional 90days. “Now we can focus on the sale, have time with our family over

Thanksgiving and Christmas and head into calving season with more energy and fewer distractions.” Most of the cow herd calves in January and February, but with the new sale timeline, they aim to move some cows back to April calving allowing for long yearlings to be sold. The ranch does maintain a small fall calving herd for their embryo program. The performance of their Angus bloodlines has been on display at the Central States Fair in Rapid City each August. Exhibiting both the champion pen of bulls and heifers in the past, out of the same sire, and this summer, in 2020, they were awarded the Champion Pen of Bulls and recorded in with the heaviest pen. “Percentage of calf weaned per body weight of cow, is a number we monitor,” says Tim. The Amdahl’s believe if they are not weaning off a calf based on a set

percentage of the body weight of the cow, they are not being as efficient as they could be. “A cow should be able to bring in a calf at 55% of its bodyweight and many of ours are pushing the 65% range.” Hoof and udder structure are also strict selection criteria tracked. The Hereford cattle purchased from Baker Herefords were exclusively Line One – Cooper and Holden bloodlines. That focus remained until last year when the decision was made to bring in an outcross of polled genetics. An exciting young sire, Uproar, was the lead off bull in the 2020 NWSS Champion Carload from Baumgartner Herefords, N.D., brought this outcross along with other polled sires. The first generation of the polled bloodlines crossed on the Line One genetics will be offered in the November sale in the bull offering and as a

extension.sdstate.edu

WATER: THE UNAPPRECIATED NUTRIENT Water might be the Rodney

Dangerfield of nutrients—it just doesn’t get any respect. We could use the latest edition of “Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle” as an example. Of the six classes of nutrients discussed in that resource, water is the last topic and the shortest chapter even though water makes up 99% of every molecule in an animal. It is easy to fall into a trap of assuming that as long as water is present, the animal’s needs are being met. However, the availability of water does not guarantee consumption. Water intake is strongly linked to feed intake so any factors that cause cattle to drink less will lead to reduced feed intake and consequently reduced performance.

November 2020

WATER CONSUMPTION AND HEAT STRESS IN CATTLE

24

Water intake and water quality issues become more pronounced during the summer. Cattle need to drink more during hot weather to relieve heat stress. Some of the dams or streams that non-confined cattle use in the summer may have less than optimal water quality due to sulfate or dissolved solids issues. Warm weather also leads to increased microbial and algae growth; further compromising

water quality especially if there is also fecal contamination.

EFFECT OF WATER ON STARTING CALF SUCCESS

Make certain there is sufficient water space and water delivery capacity during hot weather. During heat stress events the amount of space required per animal triples. If necessary, provide additional water tanks in the pen.

Monitoring waterers and water quality is critically important for starting calves. Insufficient dry matter intake during receiving can impact immune response, health outcomes, and ultimate cattle performance. Keeping waterers clean is important for any class of confined cattle, but especially true for just weaned calves.

FECAL CONTAMINATION REDUCES WATER CONSUMPTION Researchers in Canada observed that yearlings that drank from clean water sources (from a well or stream directly into a trough) gained 20 to 23% more weight compared to yearlings that drank from a pond, either directly or if the pond water was pumped into a trough. Calves on cows showed a similar response with a 10% advantage to drinking from a clean water source. These researchers also studied the effect of fecal contamination on water preference as well as water and feed consumption. They found that cattle tended to avoid water with as little as 50 ppm fecal contamination. Cattle ate less feed at 2500 ppm manure contamination. That represents as little as a half an ounce of fecal material in a gallon of water.

In some cases, the issue is less water quality but whether the calves know how to get a drink. Calves could not drink (and consequently eat very little) if they have never seen a waterer or water tank before. Letting waterers run over for a day or so will mimic the sights and sounds of natural water sources and help entice calves to drink.

TEST WATER FOR EXCESS DISSOLVED SUBSTANCES Some regions of South Dakota are plagued with water quality issues. High sulfate levels can be particularly challenging as they are associated with reduced intake, poorer mineral metabolism, and increased risk of animal health issues. A more detailed discussion of sulfate concerns with livestock

thestockmanmag.com | THE STOCKMAN

Sulfates are one concern, but other substances such as Total Dissolved Solids also can affect livestock performance. Testing the

water offers the surest method to determine if the water consumed by livestock could pose any issues. Water from natural sources that varies with weather conditions such as drought or precipitation runoff should be sampled more frequent-

Leading the Way

How leadership works on the ranch.

contributed article by B. Lynn Gordon Leader Consulting, Sioux Falls, S.D. leaderconsulting.biz

KEEPING THE FARM IN THE FAMILY PART TWO - THE INS & OUTS OF WILLS AND TRUSTS W

hat is important to you? What keeps you up at night? These are questions you may be asked when you begin the process of working with an estate planning team. Answering these questions will help to define and accomplish your farm/ ranch transition strategy goals.

November 2020

“Many folks come to me and say ‘I need a will’, but what they really need is to work through the estate planning process to determine what can work on a practical level to achieve the proper transfer of ownership and management of their farm, land, and other assets,” says Lindsay Harris, Harris Law & Co., Sioux Falls, S.D.

30

do it.” Therefore, the management capacity of the next generation and your legacy goals can determine if your estate plan should center around a will or a trust.

WILLS A simple will allows you to:

“Wills used to be the gold standard and still are used for many individuals who don’t own any property or young families with the only goal to name guardians for their children,” says Harris. Wills are a start to the process, but like most starter homes, families tend to outgrow them.

• Name whom you want to

inherit your property. May also list who you want to serve as guardian of any minor children

• Name a custodian or trustee to

manage money and other property on behalf of any minor children

• Name an individual to be your

“Developing a good transition strategy avoids unnecessary transfers of income, gift, and estate taxes,” says Harris, “and ensures financial security and family harmony for all generations. Our farming families want more than a will, they want a plan that eliminates the chaos and gives their loved ones a roadmap to keep the farm in the family, whether or not they have an operator in the next generation.”

“The biggest misconception is people think a will is their only and best option,” says Harris. Yet, wills are required to go through the court-administered probate process, are expensive to administer for farming families, and do not generally provide instructions for the generations going forward.”

Heather Venenga-Whipple, a financial associate with Thrivent Financial, Watertown, S.D., agrees. “Sometimes there is someone who can step up to farm and sometimes you don’t have someone who can

“Wills and how the assets are going to be divided up are going to be public knowledge – they will be in the local paper, and many people don’t realize that when they choose a will,” says Venenga-Whipple.

personal representative or estate administrator

TRUSTS “One of the greatest issues we see is the lack of understanding about trusts and how they fit into the estate planning puzzle,” says Harris. “Trusts are like cars – there are many makes, models and features available. The right trust is one that you can understand, is easy to administer, and is customized to fit your family and your farm. Harris and Venenga-Whipple find trusts allow for a smoother transition for many families. Trusts are legal arrangements to help you accomplish a variety of goals from providing income for yourself and your survivors to passing on your interests to the next generation, reinforced the two succession planning professionals. In a trust, a grantor agrees to transfer assets to a trustee, who manages the assets according to

thestockmanmag.com | THE STOCKMAN

“We refer to it as, ‘instructions from the grave’, as you can write the trust to give instructions for the next generation or even several generations going forward.” A trust eliminates the concern of, “I hope my kids keep the land,” which can

drag on indefinitely with a will. Rather, trusts allow the author to write out detailed instructions (e.g. what you are giving to each child and when) and eliminate many of the ‘what-ifs’ that can happen after a death. Trusts are more private than a will, are kept out of the courts, and with the flexibility they offer have proven to fit well in families that might see the need to skip a generation in the farm transfer. example, grandpa is farming, dad doesn’t, but the grandson wants to come back. Instructions in a trust can be written for a scenario such as this. “Fifty percent of people get divorced but we never plan for that. A trust can avoid a firesale in the case of a divorce,” says Venenga-Whipple. Overall, if the will or trust was written in the 1980s it is out of date, and it’s time to make estate planning a priority to allow the farming operation to continue from one generation to the next with fewer challenges and more opportunities. Proper estate management can help you ensure that your farm/ ranch and other assets are protected now and in the future. Estate planning is a time to think about your goals and protect your legacy. n 1952, what Ralph Sydenstricker thought was just a creative way for a local farmer to purchase a Super C Farmall tractor lead to the establishment of one of the top herds in the Angus breed. Ralph started in the farm machinery business in 1944 in central Missouri and was always more than willing to help service his customers. Even when that meant accepting

the request from a farmer to trade two registered Angus cows with heifer calves (valued at $1,000 a pair) for the purchase of a tractor. As the owner of the International Harvester dealership in Paris, Mo., Sydenstricker, who was joined that day by his 13-year-old son. Eddie, and one of his salesmen, accepted the unusual trade leading to an awareness of the Angus breed and interest that has flourished for nearly six decades. Young Eddie learned about Angus cattle that day and went on to be a founding member and President of the first junior Angus association in the U.S. when, in 1956, the Missouri Junior Angus Associa-

tion was organized in Monroe City, Mo. He was featured in “An Angus in Your Future’, a film produced for the American Angus Association to encourage youth to get involved in Angus cattle. Active in FFA, serving as State Secretary and receiving his American Farmer Degree in 1960, Eddie and his father, Ralph, grew to love Angus cattle as much as they did tractors.

FIRST PRODUCTION SALE Sydenstricker Angus Farm (SAF), Mexico, Mo., hosted its first sale in 1959 jointly with fellow Missouri Angus breeders, Jim and Ray Blades. In the 1970s, Ralph was looking to add more growth and outside genetics to the cowherd and imported a group of twenty thestockmanmag.com | THE STOCKMAN

females from a Canadian herd, Happyvale Angus. While touring the herd in 1976, he found Happyvale Olympic 012H alongside his dam and returned to purchase him as the $20,000 top-selling bull. As the herd grew, Ralph needed help with the management to develop a top Angus herd in Missouri. Wayne Kestler was scheduled to interview for the herdsman position on January 6, 1977, however, on that day Kestler and many other Angus friends came to Missouri, for an unexpected reason: the funeral of Ralph Sydenstricker. Upon the death of his father, Eddie, who had been busy working in the implement dealership, had to decide the future of Sydenstricker Angus Farm; Eddie and his wife, Connie, decided to continue in the Angus business.

pen of heifers at the 1978 Denver Foundation Female Sale. Eddie carried on, hosting his first annual SAF production sale held in November 1978, averaging $1,332 on 141 lots. The farm’s 1981 sale, featuring many offspring from Cracker Jack Baros 2459 “Prime Rate”, was a memorable sale, being one of the most successful ever hosted by SAF. Helping grow the program from

1981-1989 were Bill and Li Bowman and Ben Eggers, hired in 1982. SAF exhibited 34 state fair champions in 1987. Many young people honed their abilities in breeding and showing Angus cattle while working at SAF, such as Allan Robinson, Randy Graham, Todd and Tracy Ragsdale, and Ed and Mandy Raithel. “My favorite memories were in the late 70s and early 80s when

I would travel to Erdmann Angus Ranch. Leroy Erdmann was way ahead of his time breeding livestock. He became my mentor, friend, and had a huge impact on me and this business. Unfortunately, he died at an early age,” says Eddie. Cattle raised and purchased in the 1980s went on to have a great impact on the SAF herd and the breed. Three females from the mating of Brost Power Drive and Leachman Lass 1004, provided herd sires such as SAF Fame. The $18,000 Leachman Royal Queen 2027 from Jay and Les Leachman, Mont., founded the Royal Queen family and a Rito 2100 GDAR daughter, Pride Queen T4155, put her stamp on the Angus industry. The tone for the program was further defined with the purchase of two-thirds ownership of VDAR New Trend 315 in 1989 from the famous Van Dyke herd in Manhattan, Mont., when Eggers outbid three competing syndicates.

DISPERSION MINUS FIFTY

38

“We shocked the Angus community in 1990 by scheduling the “Dispersion Minus Fifty Sale,” says manager Eggers. SAF sold all but 50 registered females for their highest-grossing sale to that point and sold 67 bull calves in Missouri in one day – something Eggers said fellow cattlemen didn’t think was possible. While rebuilding, they purchased

the pick of six heifers from the Gartner-Denowh heifer calf crop, on an alternating year basis, adding females like GDAR Forever Lady 178 and GDAR Forever Lady 246 to the herd. When the industry shift to commercial-oriented traits took place, SAF began tracking more performance data, measuring carcass traits, and helping customers explore programs to market fed cattle. “We started the Sydenstricker Influence Sales to help smaller Angus breeders who are using our genetics to market under our umbrella. This sale is held annually in April.”

promoting their genetics, five bulls recorded $1M in semen sales, and SydGen further expanded their footprint by joining forces with five progressive seedstock programs: Basin Angus Ranch, Mont.; Express Ranches, Okla.; Stevenson Genetics, Mont.; Summitcrest Ohio; and Three Trees Ranch, Ga., to establish ORIgen, a state-of-theart bull housing, collection, and distribution facility near Billings, Mont. ORIgen offers custom collection and marketing of semen, and the line-up of bulls on site is a “who’s who” of the Angus breed.

HERD SIRE DIRECTORY In 1993, the program’s $28,000 top-selling bull, SAF Fame, launched the idea to print and distribute its herd sire directory. “We featured solely SAF genetics and marketed semen directly to breeders - a step unheard of at that time,” says Eggers. “Bulls like VDAR New Trend 315 Fame, SAF Focus of ER, were landmark bulls to us and heavily used in the industry.” SAF Fame was the number 2 sire for registrations in the Angus breed in 2000. The next logical step surfaced – to rename the program. “We wanted to send the message that we are selling genetics, not just cattle,” says Eggers, thus Sydenstricker Angus Farm became Sydenstricker Genetics (SydGen) in 2001. Recognition & Honors A seedstock operation 68-years in the making and still going strong today, SydGen verifies decisions made along the way were very important. “Our most popular AI sire today is SydGen Enhance, primarily because of his multi-trait superiority. PRIORITIZING FALL GRAZING ACRES A

s calves are weaned and pasture grass becomes short, the time to map out your Fall grazing plan is now. Harvest is ahead of schedule across the country this year, making for a very easy grazing transition to crop residues.

Volunteer small grain fields are

another very popular choice for Fall grazing. Fields of volunteer wheat or oats are always higher quality than corn stalks or soybean stubble. Crude protein levels will remain in the upper teens while digestibility and palatability are very high. These

November 2020

The most popular form of Fall grazing in the upper Midwest is cornstalks. Cornstalk fields will provide adequate roughage and

come very close to meeting a non-lactating cow’s nutritional needs in early/mid-gestation. Just be timely on delivering protein to your cows as the year progresses or later into their gestation period. Quality of grazing cornstalks will diminish with more rain and are certainly not very accessible in the Winter if we get ice.

44

thestockmanmag.com | THE STOCKMAN

Cover crops are a top choice for Fall grazing, but fields can drastically vary from one to the other. First off, if you followed a small grain with a cover crop comprised mainly of brassicas (turnips, radishes, rapeseed, etc.), you’ve got yourself a field of high-quality grazing, but it won’t last long. These types of fields should be grazed early in the season. Since the moisture content is so high in these plants, a few frosty nights in the teens will start to diminish their yield. Grazing brassicas will provide a highly digestible diet high in crude protein but lacks adequate dry matter levels for proper rumen flow. If there is THE STOCKMAN | thestockmanmag.com

not a field of stalks to graze along with this cover crop, be sure to offer dry hay or straw. The other type of cover crop that will be grazed this Fall/Winter is being termed a “full season” cover crop. For livestock producers that are not cash crop farmers but have farmland to feed livestock, this can be an excellent fit. These fields will contain grasses, brassicas, broadleaves, and legumes that grow in unison to provide the ultimate cow buffet. When mixed correctly, these blends will do it all! They will provide yield and quality and be grazed from early Fall well into the Winter with high snow amounts. Due to the high quality of grazing, these fields have found a great fit at ranches with fall-calving herds, but they are also ideal for wintering your spring calving cows. The obvious downside to this option is missing out on a cash crop from this field during the season. Each Fall grazing option has its pros and cons, and likely there won’t be a year where you do it all the same as the last. Knowing how to match your herd’s nutritional

needs with your production and profitability needs is always the key to making these systems work. Correctly utilizing a cheap feed source for Fall grazing will definitely help your cow/calf budget. So, take the time to do the extra fencing or make the additional phone call to lease your neighbor’s crop residues, as these few grazing months will play a significant role in the profitability of your operation this year. learn more millbornseeds.com Millborn Seeds, Brookings, SD The team of folks at Millborn Seeds have roots that run deep in farming, agriculture, and in the overall respect for the landscape. CONSIDER NEOSPORA A

s hard as we try to manage and vaccinate cattle for all the diseases, we can still see perceived issues as failures. When a producer vaccinates their cows before breeding for some of the common causes of abortion, there are still other issues that can cause abortion. It is not uncommon to see a cow abort a fetus during mid-gestation in the fall and early winter. One of the potential causes to consider is a protozoal infection caused by Neospora caninum.

Once a cow is infected with Neospora, they are carriers for life. Cattle will not spread this infection horizontally between themselves. The only way to spread Neospora directly between cattle is when an infected mother cow spreads it vertically to her unborn calf through the placenta. Often this type of infection will result in the cow aborting the pregnancy. Since the cow is infected for life, she may go on to abort other future pregnancies. If an infected cow does go to term with the pregnancy, it is very likely the calf will be born with this infection and be a lifetime carrier. If you have a cow abort during mid-pregnancy and has aborted in previous years, that would be a typical history for a cow with

Neospora. Cows that abort due to Neospora will usually not show any illness. Surprisingly Neospora does not seem to affect fertility, and affected cows seem to conceive to A.I., E.T., or natural service at normal rates. Probably the best way to get a diagnosis is to submit an aborted fetus and placenta to a diagnostic lab for evaluation. Also, blood can be drawn on the cow and tested for antibodies to Neospora. If Neospora is diagnosed, it may be worth doing some surveillance by blood testing other cows in the herd. A cow that tests positive will likely give birth to an infected calf, adding another lifetime carrier to your herd. If a producer is raising E.T. calves or doing a lot of A.I., it might be best to start checking those cows first since they will most likely be raising replacement heifers that go back into the herd. If a cow is diagnosed as a carrier and you want to test the calf at birth, blood must be taken before it nurses and receives the mother’s antibodies via colostrum. If a calf is born infected, it will likely look normal and can even make its way

November 2020

Neospora is an infection that originates from dogs. Domestic dogs are considered the definitive host for this organism. If a dog becomes infected, they will pass oocysts for Neospora in their feces. Transmission to cattle occurs when feed is contaminated with infected canine feces. While it has not been proven that the wild canines (such

as coyotes and red foxes) are a definitive host, they are considered an intermediate host.

50

thestockmanmag.com | THE STOCKMAN

back into the herd. On occasion, infected calves will be born with neurological signs such as poor sucking response, difficulty standing, or failure to thrive.

To prevent contamination of feed can be a challenge. Most farms have dogs, but all dogs are infected. It is not uncommon to see foxes living in stacked hay or cornstalks, and most pastures have foxes and coyotes that live there or pass through them as well. I would still consider wild canines as a source of contamination. Probably the best way to manage Neospora is to have diagnostics run on any aborted fetuses in question. It is always best to submit the placenta from the abortion as well.

If diagnosed for Neospora, consider screening the cows in the herd that raise embryo and A.I. calves, replacement heifers, or seedstock. Testing any new cattle purchased into the herd is a good place to start as well. Much of the incidence comes from keeping heifers from carrier cows. Try to eliminate carrier cows from the herd and any apparent sources of feed contamination as the basis for control. learn more collisionembryo.com Dr. Vince Collison is co-owner of Collison Embryo | Collison Veterinary Services PAC in Rockwell City, Iowa.

November 2020

In my communications with SEK Genetics, a lab that tests blood samples from around the country, it seems that the distribution for Neospora is widespread. Another group that could be tested would be replacement heifers before they enter the herd. If any of the replacements test positive, you can go back to test the heifer’s dam. If the dam is negative, it tells you that the heifer was exposed to contaminated feed sometime after birth. Also,

another group to screen would be any cows purchased for recipients.

Sale Barn Study

A review of the current cattle market.

contributed article by Kirk Lynch Lynch Livestock Inc. and Humeston Livestock Exchange, Humeston, Iowa humestonlivestockexchange.com

WHAT WEATHER! W

e couldn’t have asked for better Fall weather to get through harvest, fall processing of cattle, and all that winter prep. Hoping it continues and takes us into what looks like some promising times over the next few months. We are seeing a little variance across the different markets. The fat cattle seem to be climbing slowly, going up an average of a $1/week to staying steady. I can see this continuing throughout the rest of the year, with the occasional small set back, until we get in that $1.15-1.20 range - which is where we need to be the first couple months of 2021. Provided, of course, we do not have another world or an election crisis to set back the market and kick our legs out from under us. The Holstein market continues to be solid, but has not come along at the same rate as the colored cattle market.

The cull cow market has taken a

bit of a hit as more and more cows are coming to town. This will likely continue until we work through the open and cull cows of the Fall. The opportunity to buy some cows to put on feed is here. The breeding stock market has been stagnant as many people have been dealing with harvest and not expanding right now. This usually changes when we get into the winter months when cows are closer to calving, and people have the feed and resources for winter.

cattle that can put gain extremely efficiently. I hope everyone has a safe Fall and that we continue with this weather. We sure need it to even out the Fall we had last year. Until next month!

We all know the feeder calf market pretty much follows the corn market, and with the corn market having some fire to it, we have seen a drop in the feeder market across the board. This will continue to be the trend unless there is a dramatic jump in the fat cattle market, which I do not see happening. Once again, we see a premium for value cattle such as naturals, NHTC, etc. and the large groups of yearling

traight Most used tool on your farm and how old is it? Easily the most used tool is our JD 624H payloader. We use it every day of the year- loading feed wagon, hauling bales, cleaning pens, loading fill, etc. I get pretty whiny when it breaks down. This loader is so handy that when we need to haul bales, there is always a discussion on who gets to run it!”

Your go-to sorting apparatus?

This one is easy, S Queen Essa 208. She is easily the best cow I have ever been around. Her dam produced until age 10, her grand dam until age 15. 208 produced for us until age 13, and we flushed her numerous times. She is a Pathfinder cow with a WR of 7/110. Her udder was perfectly attached, with tiny, evenly spaced teats that stayed the same with each lactation. We have more descendants of her than any other cow on the ranch. Several of the females that trace to 208 are close to as good as her, but I’m still waiting for one that is better!”

What is your least favorite job on the farm? It is a toss-up between replacing roller bearings or working on the pickup on my JD baler. I am pretty sure I was built to work with cattle, not iron.”

It is very close between watching our kids play basketball and going to junior livestock shows, but I think that basketball wins. We have nearly completed our elementary basketball tenure and have moved up the timeline to JH and HS. There have been many times when Sara and I stop everything on the ranch to go to an afternoon game. I hate to miss any of them! We even moved our sale up to November to avoid conflicting with their sports activities in December.”

Describe your best/worst day. There are so many best days at our ranch: the first day of calving, the last day of AI’ing, turning off the feed wagon in the spring, any rainy day, the first snow day, the last snow day, the first day of haying and so on. But, the best day here, in my opinion, is the day after our November production sale. Our thinking and activities change from preparation to delivery.”

November 2020

Mustard- a six-year-old King bred bay gelding. He is a good one and is about to be stolen from me by the kids. Anytime we have a full day or days of sorting, I grab him. He really earned his keep last fall when we were preparing for the sale in very flooded and muddy conditions. Mustard works all day, every day, and will not ever quit you. In fact, if you don’t grab him out of the gelding pen, it seems as if he gets disgusted.”

A conversation with everyday Stockmen,

Justin Spickler Spickler Ranch North - Glenfield, N.D.

The most important lesson you’ve learned in this business? There are many lessons learned that are very important; it is hard to pick just one. The one I use the most is this: when things don’t work out in real life as they do in your head, you have to adapt. Assess and start over, but keep going forward. Eventually, your plan will work, just maybe not how you thought it would.”

What about the beef cattle industry excites you the most? I am most excited by the role we play in feeding the world. Our cows harvest grass on land not suitable for farming, and they turn that grass into a nutritious protein source essential to us humans. Much of the world finds partaking in beef consumption a very enjoyable experience. So as the world’s population

continues to grow, we can maintain our position of providing nutritious protein, if we pay attention.”

Annual Production Sale November 18, 2020 Glenfield, North Dakota About the Stockman. I am a double-bred purebred cattle producer; both of my parents’ families raised registered Herefords. Today, of course, we have Angus cattle, but I recall many lessons learned from Herefords that make me a better Angus breeder. I ranch with Sara, my wife of 19 years. We have four children: Wyatt (15), Will (14), Jessa (11), and Watson (10). All of us are involved in the day-to-day activities at our ranch. I hate to list the duties that everyone performs, as it would seem that I don’t do anything.

Sara is a very talented Mom, bookkeeper, sale catalog and ad designer, record keeper, horse rider, calving barn boss, and the list keeps going. The kids all take care of tasks at our ranch, some willingly, some not; some age-appropriate, some not. Sara and I hope that all of our kids will end up in the Ag industry or, at least, draw on their ranch experiences to contribute to their successes in life.” learn more spicklerranchnorth.com
