Editor’s Note
take a look inside. Whew, our second issue is out the door! Like many of you, our staff has had a whirlwind few weeks getting cattle and crew packed and unpacked from the National Western Stock Show in Denver. (If you’ve never been to the NWSS, I encourage you to make plans to attend. You will leave there filled with loads of enthusiasm for the cattle, the people, and the industry.) This issue was a fast one, but it is a good one! Let’s take a look inside. Throughout 2019, we will be featuring recurring columns in an effort to bring you information that is pertinent, interesting, and entertaining. This month, Dr. Vince Collison, Collison Embryo has sent us another great read on Superovulation Basics for IVF; B. Lynn Gordon, Leader Consulting, LLC tackles time management during the calving season; and the South Dakota State University Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialists offer tips to get those cows calving during daylight hours. I am very excited about the practical application these columns offer and hope you will be as well. As you work your way through calving and sale season, take us along for the ride! Our latest issue is a great companion for those late nights waiting up for babies or searching for your next herd bull.
Katie P.S. - We are always looking for great photos. If you have any you’d like to share, please send them to me at katie@stockmanmag.com.

In 1896, the first generation
of the Nordlund family emigrated from overseas to settle unclaimed land in northwestern Minnesota near Clearbrook. The rougher ground, best suited for grazing cattle, above the Red River Valley became home to Nordlund Stock Farm (NSF). Nordlund Stock Farm, LLC is family-owned and operated by Mike, Sam, and Kelly Nordlund. Kelly grew up raising and showing Herefords. After high school, he attended the University of Minnesota and received his degree in Agriculture Economics. In 1972, Simmentals were purchased, and he began farming. Kelly and his wife, Linda built their farm and beef operation from scratch. They purchased a farm site near where Kelly was raised. The first Black Angus cows were purchased in the mid 80s from Hi-View Angus,
18
Linda’s parents, in northwest North Dakota. The pair decided to purchase and use purebred Red Angus in the early 1990s. Purebred Simmentals, Black Angus and Red Angus herds were managed until 2004, when they dispersed the Simmental herd. The operation currently runs Red and Black Angus cows with a few commercial cows that are considered to be the recipient herd. In addition to the cattle, the Nordlunds do a small amount of farming. Raising wheat and soybeans for cash crops, and corn for silage and grain. They produce alfalfa hay for feed as well as a cash crop, marketing higher testing hay to dairy operations. The Nordlunds sons, Mike and Sam, grew up very involved with the farm. In their youth, they were both busy with chores, farming, and showing cattle in 4-H. They both attend-
ed North Dakota State University. After returning from college, the boys purchased the cow herd and the farm site from Kelly and Linda. The boys are the fourth generation in their family to farm. Mike and Ashely have two boys, and Sam and Kendall also have two boys now, making their children the fifth generation on the farm. This year, the Nordlunds will be hosting their 22nd Annual Production sale in February, and will mark 45 years marketing seedstock. To constantly improve genetics in the herd, artificial insemination (A.I.) and embryo transfer are used extensively. A.I. has been used since the beginning in 1972. Kelly’s brother was one of the first veterinarians in Minnesota to use embryo transfer technology in the mid 80s, and it has been used in the breeding program ever since.

Today, 60 to 80 embryos are implanted annually. With high feed costs and land prices, the Nordlunds stress feed efficiency in the breeding choices of their herd. Sam states, “The goal is to raise cattle that our customers will be able to keep around because they are efficient, good producers and will pay the feed bill, year in and year out.” Red and Black Angus seem to fit the goals of the operation. Both breeds are known for their maternal strength, carcass merit, functionality, trouble-free structure, and are still easy to look at and evaluate. FEED AT NIGHT CALVE DURING THE DAY contributed article by Calving season is in Taylor Grussing & Adele Harty full swing for some and South Dakota State University coming soon for others. Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialists With that in mind, www.extension.sdstate.edu

questions have been raised as to whether or not time of day feeding affects time of calving, the answer is “Yes”. Feeding cows later in the day and into the evening will increase the number of calves born during daylight hours when it is easier to watch them more closely. Gus Konefal, a rancher in Manitoba, Canada, first developed this feeding method after he discovered that 80% of his cows calved between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m when they were fed later in the day. Konefal’s method included a twice-a-day feeding with first feeding between 11:00 a.m. and noon and second feeding between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
28
How does this actually work? The exact mechanism is unknown, but whenever cattle are consuming feed, rumen motility increases to digest the feed and intraruminal pressures rise. As cattle gestation progresses, rumen pressure will naturally
decrease and research shows that rumen contractions fall a few hours before calving. Therefore, the theory is that cattle fed in the evening will increase rumen pressure at night and thus decline in the daytime. This helps cattle producers to utilize feeding time to their advantage and hope to place calving out of the dark and into daylight hours. Similar research at Iowa State University using the Konefal feeding system, but only feeding once a day at 4 p.m., starting 2 weeks prior to the expected start of calving, resulted in 82% of cows calving between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. In addition, calves born between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. (75% of the 24 hour day) was 91%. Therefore, only 9% of calves were born outside the window when traditional calf checks are performed. Perhaps, important to note that when heifers were separated from the data set and analyzed, 90% calved in this same

time frame. A survey collected from 15 beef producers in Iowa and Missouri also reported feeding once daily between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. resulted in 85% of cows calving between 5 am and midnight. Compare this data to cows not on the Konefel feeding system in the same herds that had an equal split between day and night calving. Researchers at USDA-ARS at Miles City, MT, completed at three-year study evaluating differences in feeding time on calving time, but the numbers were not as dramatic as Konefel and Iowa State data. However, there was a consistent 10-20% decrease in the number of cows calving between 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the late-fed cows compared to the early-fed cows.
ing too much feed will yield less desirable results.
• This system works best in a drylot situation where
all feed is provided. Desired effect in a grazing situation may not be seen unless supplemental hay or timing of grazing can be regulated.
• Weather can play a role in effectiveness. Before or during
Here are some brief points to remember when considering implementing the Konefal calving method:
• Research has in-
dicated that for this method to be most effective, it should be started one month in advance of calving, but shorter duration prior to the start of calving will have some effect. Depending on genetics and environment, cows can begin calving up to two weeks early.
• Maintaining regular night
checks, especially for heifers, is still recommended as it is estimated 11% of heifers and 4% of cows will need some assistance during calving each year (NAHMS, 2008). as close to the same feeding schedule and feed amount as possible each day. Deviating more than 15 minutes or provid-

storms, cattle may not come to the bunk to eat and may be more likely to calve at night.
• Additional research indicates that a first-calf
heifer that calves during the day will tend to calve during the day the remainder of her productive years. Some other pre-calving tips:
• If a scour prevention vaccine is going to be
used, it needs to be given a month before calving to boost colostrum quality. Therefore, timing to start feeding at night should coincide with giving scour shots.

• Body condition scoring cows should have al-

If cattle are in less than desirable body condition, work with a nutritionist to develop a ration to attempt to add some weight pre-calving. Even though fetal growth is occurring rapidly the last month, it is more cost-effective to add weight prepartum vs. postpartum when nutrient requirements greatly increase due to lactation.

tation. If cattle are moving over an icy path regularly, the fetus could change position if the cow slips. This can cause some unnecessary abortions or even calving difficulties if calves do not return to normal fetal presentation by calving day. Therefore, be aware of bad ice spots in the calving pen or working facility and try to reduce traffic in those areas if possible.

Schroeder Angus Consignments:
“Time managemen t is no t a myth - time managemen t is crucial.”
MAKING TIME FOR TIME MANAGEMENT Have you ever heard anyone say they are not busy? I am guessing not. And with calving in full swing for many beef producers, time is of the essence. How can we find time to get everything done that needs to be done along with the added responsibility of checking cows day and night, making sure the cows close to calving are near the barn, plus caring for newborn calves?
February 2019
Record-keeping, processing new calves, moving pairs, night-checking, ensuring proper bedding and feed are available, keeping waters open ̶ the list can go on and on. Heavy workloads, long hours, the feeling of being overwhelmed can make this time of year challenging.
34
It all comes down to making that time as productive as possible. Time management is not a myth ̶ time management is crucial. It does include prioritization of tasks, understanding and estimating how long a task will take to com-
plete and knowing your to-do list. Here are four tips to help with time management:
1) P rioritize tasks
Could you be letting other issues creep in and chip away at your available time? Without prioritizing tasks daily, you may find yourself spending time doing a task that has much lower impact than one that is more critical to your business. For example, should you be re-organizing the tagging kit for when the new round of calves hit the ground next week or welding panels you use at branding in three months. With only 24-hours in a day, how you
manage your day is what is most important. We can only change behaviors; we can’t change time. Conducting tasks that increase your productivity today offers the most return.
2) Communica te to o thers
Be clear and communicate with those around you. If you say yes to everything sent your way, you may be a clog in the pipeline and bring the rest of the team down. By overcommitting and then not completing tasks in a timely manner, you leave others in the lurch believing a task has been done when it is not. If your to-do list for that day, week, etc., is taking longer than you expected, speak up and let others know especially the person you report to or if you are in leadership role delegate where possible. This prevents someone from relying on you for the completion of a task that you either do not have time to do
stockmanmag.com | THE STOCKMAN
LEADING the way by B. Lynn Gordon
or are not going to be able to do effectively.
3) Develop a system
Hectic times like calving season can make it easy to forget or overlook regular tasks. Everyone has a different preference for how they could develop or adjust to organizing their time. Some like to make written to do lists and carry that list with them, checking off items as they go. Others find putting tasks in
their phones, so they can receive notification when a project should be started or finished. I know individuals who set a phone alarm, so they don’t forget to do a certain task such as call the veterinarian to get more supplies, or order feed from the co-op. Practice and identify which system works for you, but most importantly, develop a system.
4) S tay in con trol
Long hours and little sleep during calving can easily overwhelm individuals resulting in poor quality work, safety issues, and overall business productivity. Some believe they work the best under pressure, however, working under constant pressure long-term can become addictive and take toll on your health and your working relationships. Balance is essential to prevent burn out, mistakes and frustrations.
Thoughts from a Stockman. . .
What time management element have you implemented on your ranch during calving season that has proven to be beneficial? “We have a heated room in the barn. This saves a lot of time going back and forth to the house for warm water, calving supplies or to catch a few minutes of sleep while waiting on calves. It serves as our vet room and calving diner all in one!” John & Stephanie Jung, Lazy J Bar Ranch, Ipswich, SD
“We installed cameras in all of our calving barns this year and everyone on the ranch has remote access on their phone to view the cameras. Now they can be out feeding and checking cattle and continue to keep an eye on what is going on with calving. The investment has already paid off.” Jack Holden Holden Herefords, Valier, MT
“We simply hired an extra person for two months. They help with chores and bull sale preparations, along with night calving every other night. It frees me up to work on the catalog and other things that need my attention this time of year.”
“We are in the process of moving to a May calving season. The labor investment of a winter calving season is too high!” Jake Reed Bar J Angus, Brooten, MN

ALL ABOUT
BALANCE by Melissa McGee Buehler photos by Upstream Ranch
Brent & Robin Meeks of Upstream Ranch balance it all for the commercial cattleman. Settled in the valley of the Calamus River, amid the beautiful rolling hills of grassland, you will find one of the top Hereford herds in the United States. The Upstream Ranch is located 17 miles north of Taylor, NE, on Hwy 183, in the heart of the Nebraska Sandhills, known to be excellent grazing land for cattle.
40
The ranch is owned and operated by Brent and Robin Meeks. Brent’s parents, Ferrall and Gloria Meeks, and grandparents, Alfred and Mildred Meeks, purchased the ranch back in 1955. The Meeks families had previously raised Hereford cattle in Logan, NM, and then Dalhart, TX. Brent and Robin are the third genera-
tion of the Meeks family to run the ranch and have 2 children, Marshall and Carlee. Carlee is also part of the operation and returned home after graduating from Kansas State with an Ag Communications degree. Upstream Herefords originated back in 1937 when Alfred bought
some heifers from his father, JD Meeks. The ranch has always been a registered Hereford operation with some commercial cows used as recipients for the embryo transfer program. They have a very intensive AI and ET program. Currently, the ranch calves out approximately 1,000 head of registered calves each year. Half of the cow herd calves in the fall, and half calves in the spring. The Meeks hold a production sale each year on the first Saturday in February, selling 300 head of polled and horned bulls and 40 females. The main focus of the herd is the production of bulls for the commercial cattleman. Some of the buyers run a straight Hereford operation, but most of the bulls sold will go into a crossbreeding program, primarily on black cows to supply heterosis while producing baldie calves. Roughly two-thirds of the bull calf crop will make the bull sale. They are rigidly culled for per-

formance, soundness, fertility and disposition. The cow herd is also culled very aggressively for problem-free production. Good feet, eyes, and especially sound udders are essential for a cow to remain in production at the ranch.

Genetically, the Upstream Ranch is trying to produce cattle with balanced trait selection. They are constantly striving for the proper balance of calving ease, growth, maternal qualities, fertility, and carcass traits. The Hereford breed is known for its docility, hardiness, and feed efficiency. Brent is also a strong advocate of using EPDs and ultrasound, but he says, “We must remember, they are just another
selection tool.” Brent stresses that he still likes the cattle to look good phenotypically, be sound on their feet and legs, and docile in their temperament. “Our goal has always been to balance attractive phenotype, solid EPDs, and acceptable pedigree into a high-quality beef animal”, stated Brent. Studying the EPDs of possible bull matings is an essential piece in our sire selections and breeding
decisions. The Meeks family are members of the National Hereford Association and the Nebraska Hereford Association. Through their years of membership, the Meeks have been honored with various awards. In 2002 and again in 2018, Upstream Ranch was named Breeder of the Year by the NHA. In 2013, they received the AHA Hereford Heritage Award which is given to

breeders who have registered 10,000 head with the AHA. There are only four operations in the United States that have been given this honor. The Meeks were also honored with the Golden Breeder award several years back for being in the registered Hereford business for 50 years.

Although the main focus is producing high-quality cattle for the commercial cattle industry, the ranch
used to be much more active in the show ring. They raised and showed UPS Odyssey, the 2006 Supreme Champion Hereford at the National Western Stock Show. Both Carlee and Marshall showed for several years during their junior careers as well. Brent was honored to judge the Hereford Pen show in Yards at the 2019 NWSS in January. Upstream’s most prolific herd matriarch is UPS Miss Diamond 1353, who is 18 years
old this spring and has produced 165 natural and ET calves. Her most prominent son is UPS Domino 3027, who is one of the most noted calving ease and maternal sires in the breed and was the ABS top selling Hereford bull for quite some time. 3027 also is the sire of Churchill Sensation 028X, another breed icon which they were lucky enough to own part of and was Genex’s leading sire for many years. Sensation 028x is the sire of UPS Sensation 2296 which is presently one of the most widely used and popular Hereford bulls in the United States.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A BREEDING PROJECT provided by Sarah Thorson, Beef Marketing & Education Manager, GENEX sthorson@genex.coop
Have you ever wondered what a day on a large artificial insemination (A.I.) breeding project is like? The logistics and planning required can seem overwhelming and are often the reason producers choose not to A.I. However, if the logistics can be solved - and they most always can - the advantages of A.I. can help improve the ranch’s bottom line. Think more calves born earlier in the breeding season, the ability to use proven genetics, and value-added replacement females. Follow along as I take you
through a recent breeding project and show you why GENEX is known for offering the industry’s best chute-side service!
6:00 A.M. I make my way down to the hotel lobby where Justin Hergenreder, GENEX Beef Large Herd Development Manager, is anxiously waiting to get on the road. Justin is the logistics guy on our team. If you are concerned about the facilities, time, or labor involved in a breeding project,
A portable breeding barn makes it possible to breed cows almost anywhere. The breeding barn can be backed up to a portable, temporary or permanent corral and alley for efficient and stress-free breeding.
52
Justin is the person to talk to. While I grab a cup of coffee and a quick bite to eat, Justin briefs me on the day’s events. We have about 550 total cows to breed today at two different locations. Talk about logistics! As always, Justin has a plan, and I am confident the day will go smoothly.
7:30 A.M. After a quick trip to the local donut shop to get a treat for the cowboy crew, we arrive at the ranch. We are just getting there,
but the ranch’s cowboy crew has already been hard at work. They have gathered the first group of cows and are just finishing sorting the calves off. Troy Carruthers and Matt Dolezal, GENEX Independent Contractors, arrive about the same time we do, and we get to work setting up the double-stall breeding barn, filling thaw units with water and making sure the A.I. gun warmers are plugged in. The portable breeding barn is the one piece of equipment that makes it possible to breed cows almost anywhere. If you have some kind of corral and alley (portable, temporary or permanent), we can back up our breeding barn to it and, when things are moving smoothly, can easily breed 80 females an hour.
8:15 A.M. The first cows start rolling through the chute right on schedule. There are about 280 cows to be bred at the first location. We fall quickly into our rolls. Justin, Troy and Matt take turns A.I.ing in a three-man rotation, while I start off the morning thawing semen. Today, we are using semen from 1AN01300 INVESTMENT. The ranch feeds their own calves, so INVESTMENT was a great choice as his progeny are known to feed well. That, however, isn’t the only reason they chose him. INVESTMENT also has a 104 PregCheck™ ranking. The PregCheck™ fertility ranking system, proprietary to GENEX, is the first of its kind in the beef industry
With 280 cows to breed this morning, three people rotate to conduct A.I. while another thaws semen and loads the A.I. guns.
53
and evaluates an individual sire’s frozen semen conception rate. While everyone knows some A.I. sires get more cows pregnant than others, in the past it was difficult to measure a bull’s conception ability. Now with PregCheck™ rankings, we can do just that! At a 104 ranking, we expect INVESTMENT to achieve about 4 more pregnancies per 100 breedings than his contemporaries. On the 550 cows we are going to breed today, that’s 22 extra A.I. calves!
11:30 A.M. We are just finishing up the first group of cows. The cowboy crew loads up their horses and heads five miles down the road to the next group while we clean up the breeding barn, hook it up to Justin’s pick-up and head out. When we arrive at the next location, it’s a tight squeeze for the breeding barn, but we get backed up and get to work putting everything back where it belongs while the crew finishes up sorting.
February 2019
1:00 P.M.
54
After a quick breeding barn picnic consisting of Little Debbie® Honey Buns and Double Stuf OREO cookies (no one said a breeding project would be good for your diet), we are back at work. This time Matt takes a turn thawing semen, and I jump into the breeding rotation. Even though I’ve been breeding cows for almost 20 years, my job
Chute-side service breeding projects are a team effort. You get the cattle to the alleyway, and GENEX takes care of the breeding!
as the GENEX Beef Marketing and Education Manager keeps me at my desk most days, so I love any opportunity to be out on a breeding project. I always learn something and am amazed at how efficiently our team can manage a project of this magnitude. Everyone has a role to play. As I indicated earlier, Justin is the logistics guy. He takes his job very seriously. While he is always up for a joke in the breeding barn, he also sets the tone and
keeps things moving. He is also the cleanest A.I. technician I have ever seen; don’t you dare run into him with a poopy glove on! Matt is our Angus genetics and pedigree guru. I would put Matt’s eye for cattle up against just about anyone. He knows what it takes to make a good one. Troy is the Energizer bunny of the breeding barn. He never seems to get tired. The rest of us are always willing to take a turn thawing semen so we can stand in one place for a while. Not Troy. He wants to be where the stockmanmag.com | THE STOCKMAN
action is.
3:45 P.M. I look out the back window of the breeding barn, and the corral behind the alley is nearly empty! The last few cows flow smoothly through the barn, and we are finished! We pack everything up and hook the barn to Troy’s pickup, so he can drop it off where we will be breeding cows tomorrow. There are another 300 to breed tomorrow morning! I hop into the The Stockman | stockmanmag.com
passenger seat of Justin’s truck. It’s been an awesome day. Things couldn’t have gone smoother, but all I want now is a cheeseburger, fries, and a hot shower! This is just one example of a recent GENEX breeding project. Nearly every day of the spring breeding season, our 17 full-time employees and 180 independent contractors are working on breeding projects of all sizes throughout the U.S. Don’t let
logistics be the thing that keeps you from using A.I. to add value to your breeding program. Our team has the experience to help you make a plan that will achieve your goals. Whether looking to add value to replacement females, have more calves born earlier in the breeding season, or benefit from use of proven genetics, we will be with you every step of the way! learn more genex.coop | 888.333.1783 55

Veterinarian View Superovulation Basics for IVF contributed article Vince Collison DVM Collison Embryo | Collison Veterinary Services PC
collisonembryo.com
In the last article we reviewed the follicular dynamics of the bovine ovary and how we can use FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) to recruit follicles in the conventional embryo flushing program. In the last 5 -10 years, IVF has become much more commonly used in cattle, so what ovarian dynamics do we need to think about to improve or maintain results? The first thing to consider is that the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure differs from the conventional flush in that it is not necessary for a follicle to develop to the point that it will ovulate. When we do the conventional flushing, it is essential that we stimulate a donor with FSH until she
comes into estrus. Without the FSH, the donor will only go on to ovulate one oocyte resulting in a single embryo recovered at the time of the flush. In IVF, we collect the oocytes with an ultrasound guided needle that aspirates the individual follicles on the ovary. In the previous article, we talked about how we can see the follicular reserves at the time we perform an ultrasound exam of the donor. This is what we will recover during the oocyte aspiration procedure for IVF. Knowing this, why do we use FSH prior to oocyte aspiration for IVF if the follicles are there and don’t need to ovulate? There are really two schools of thought on the use of FSH in
IVF - some believe FSH is necessary prior to collection and some believe it is not needed prior to collection. What are the advantages to using FSH for IVF: 1) There is potential to recruit extra follicles to aspirate. 2) The follicles will be larger at the time of ovulation to make them easier to aspirate. 3) Stimulating with FSH will cause the follicles to be in a growth phase which will cause the oocyte to develop into a more competent oocyte for fertilization as it develops on the path toward ovulation. What are the advantages of not using FSH for IVF: 1) Reduced cost from not using FSH. In the last few years there has been a steep increase in the cost of FSH and eliminating the use of it can result in significant savings. 2) Reduced labor from not having to administer FSH to the donor. It also has the advantage of eliminating trips through the chute for the donor resulting in less stress and stockmanmag.com | THE STOCKMAN
chance of injury. 3) Eliminate any side effects that may be caused by administering the extra hormones to donors. If a donor has a history of allergic response to FSH, a no FSH program is ideal. Also, anytime exogenous hormones are given, there is a chance that a negative endocrine feedback effect can occur which may result in reducing the natural production of FSH in the cow’s body.
In our practice, we perform oocyte aspirations predominately on non-simulated donors. This is how we started when we first began collecting oocytes for IVF. A couple of years ago, we did try stimulating all of the cows we collected with the idea that we would see a larger number of embryos develop since we would be collecting as the follicle was growing. We were unable to THE STOCKMAN | stockmanmag.com
see any advantage in final results, so we have gone back to performing mostly non-stimulated collection. One has to have an open mind when deciding if it is best to use stimulated or non-stimulated collections. While we do predominately non-stimulated collections, there are cows that will perform best when stimulated. There is really no way to know what is best for any donor until some history is built on the cow. We start all cows without FSH on initial collection but feel there has to be flexibility
to add FSH based on prior results. Also, as noted in the previous article, donor exams prior to oocyte collection, genetics, and nutrition all play a role in final result with IVF as well. learn more collisionembryo.com Dr. Vince Collison is co-owner of Collison Embryo | Collison Veterinary Services PC in Rockwell City, IA.

4) Oocyte collections of non-stimulated cows are usually fairly close in numbers to those of stimulated cows. Remember, we are only able to recruit with FSH what is present in the follicular wave. With the proper equipment, the smaller follicles in the 2-3 mm range can be seen and collected without being enlarged. Thus, all follicles that are present in that follicular wave can be aspirated without stimulation.

In the News North Dakota 4-H Livestock Judging Team Places Fourth at Western National Roundup
February 2019
The 4-H Livestock Judging team representing North Dakota recently competed at the Western National Roundup, placing fourth out of 26 teams. Last March the Kidder County 4-H Livestock Judging Team finished second at the ND State Livestock Judging contest, qualifying them for the chance to judge in Denver. However, two of the team members on that team had already competed in Denver in 2017, therefore making them ineligible for the 2019 contest.
