I am trying to be optimistic and upbeat, but I am defeated this week. any milestones will be celebrated in 2020. However, not many will carry the honor of that which will be marked by the Laflin family of Olsburg, Kan. Since the 1900s, the Laflin name has been associated with breeding and raising Angus cattle, honored as one of oldest registered Angus herds in the U.S. This year, they will embark on their 120th year of continuous production of Angus cattle. Currently, under the direction of R.D. and Shelie Laflin and their five children along with, R.D.’s

mom, Barb, the Laflin Ranch continues the rich heritage established five generations ago by Eugene B. (E.B.) Laflin near Crab Orchard, Neb. When E.B. Laflin started his herd in 1900, the focus was on producing efficient Angus cattle with exceptional size and bred-in performance. These parameters were the measuring stick incorporated into the breeding program and selection priorities for more than a century, and they have held the test of time, continuing to be the driving force today at Laflin Ranch.

“I’m amazed by what we have witnessed in the last few years in our industry,” says Laflin, referring to the drought, record-high feed prices, and a cold and stormy winter of 2019 in north-central Kansas. Knowing what he has experienced as he works to continue breeding Angus cattle, only makes Laflin have a more profound respect for what his ancestors endured over the past 120 years. They had to survive the depression of the 1930s, limited manpower while several served in the war, loss of market share, the

influence of continental genetics, drought, and the list goes on. Their fortitude to push through and not lose focus of being cattlemen through and through has allowed the current generation to celebrate the historical makings of this great Angus herd.

FUNCTIONAL FOCUS Generation after genera-

tion fine-tuned the breeding program to meet the needs. Laflin Ranch has incorporated research and experience to adjust their cattle to produce pounds of meat in a new environment with new feed options, new health challenges, and new market strategies. “However, fertility and longevity remain two of the most important traits we select for. Without fertility and longevity, nothing else really matters.” The focus on maternal traits has always been at the forefront. “You need to have a solid female that breeds back consistently with little assistance to help you produce a

Establishing and carrying on this strong foothold in the Angus breed also means working to support the goals of the customer. “It’s often said selling cattle to your neighbor is one of the toughest things for a seedstock breeder to accomplish,” says Laflin, “we are proud that roughly 5070% of our cattle sell within 200-miles of our ranch.” Additional cattle have sold from California to New York, to Canada, Mexico and many other foreign countries.

Laflin spends many hours rummaging through research about potential sire lines with his customer in mind. “Our bull buyers are seeking everything from pounds and performance to a heifer bull to use on first-time calvers, and everything in between, so I need to offer a variety of options to cover these diverse needs.” Although the selection of breeding stock is ultimately done by Laflin, he often consults trusted friends and breeders who are also follow-

Times were difficult in the depression years, and the story is often told of L.E. giving $500 of his own money to keep the Nebraska Association afloat. The 1930’s drought meant no grass, no crops, and the tough decision of whether to sell off the herd of cattle. Through research L.E., became aware of the Flint Hills area of Kansas along the Tuttle Creek Reservoir near Manhattan, where he decided to ship his cattle by rail for summer grazing, returning them to Nebraska for wintering, a feat he continued for 30 years. During this time, he continued to expand the market for his Angus selling them as far away as Maryland and Texas and building a well-known herd. In the 1940-50s, L.E’s sons’ Bob and Lew were in partnership in Crab Orchard, raising Angus cattle, taking turns managing the herd while the other served in the military during the Korean War. L.E. passed away in 1956. In 1962, Bob and Lew realized they should consider relocation of the herd to Kansas, where grass was abundant rather than constant shipment back and forth. They bought a ranch south of Olsburg, KS, which remains the current home of Laflin Ranch. Bob moved his family to Kansas and Lew and his family remained managing the Nebraska division.

WINTER NUTRITION: ARE YOU STAYING AHEAD OR GETTING BEHIND

s winter progresses, winter nutrition and increased environmental stress on cows may concern many cow-calf producers. Winter nutritional management affects not only the profitability of a beef cowherd, but also the future performance of the cow and her offspring. With that in mind, building a nutritional program for a cow-calf system requires understanding nutritional requirements, knowing the “stress periods” that can happen, and knowing the quality and quantity of your forage resources.

One “stress period” is late gestation. Moving from mid to late gestation increases a cow’s energy requirement 25% and her protein requirement 10%.

In addition, the nutritional management of the pregnant beef cow can affect her calf’s performance. Developmental, or fetal, programming is the idea that the maternal environment affects fetal development and the offspring long-term. Calves born from nutrient-restricted dams during late gestation have been shown to have reduced immunity. It can be tempting to let dry, pregnant cows “rough it” on low-quality range or forages with little to no supplement in an attempt to save money. However, providing good nutrition to pregnant cattle during late gestation supports rapid fetal growth, calf health and performance. In addition, it prepares the cow for her great-

est nutritional “stress period” of lactation, which can affect her subsequent reproductive performance. The impact of winter weather should not be ignored. When the effective temperature is below the animal’s lower critical temperature, the animal must increase heat production to maintain a constant body temperature. To produce more heat, the cow must either receive more energy from the feed ration or draw on her body stores. Seven days or more of cold, windy or wet weather will increase cow energy requirements 10 to 30%. If hay or forage quality is good, intake will increase; however, the increased intake and overall energy intake

On a scale of 1 to 9, a calving BCS of 5 to 6 is considered optimal at calving. Weather changes and forage availability can make achieving an optimum BCS 60 to 90 days before calving difficult. A mild winter may result in most cows being BCS 5 or greater, whereas a harsh winter may result in cows calving at BCS < 5. Measuring BCS in the winter can be deceiving due to gut fill of low-quality forage, winter hair coat, or environmental conditions. Thin cows with increased gut fill of low-quality forages can be mistaken as being in better condition than they truly are. Long winter hair coats can mask prominent ribs or the vertebrae, landmarks used in scoring body condition. After a winter storm, cows can also look thinner than they actually are with a shrunk appearance due to a lack of water and forage intake. The last chance to economically increase BCS on a cow during late gestation is the last 90 days prior to calving. After

that, it is difficult for a thin cow to gain condition immediately after calving because it requires large table 1 amounts of high quality feeds, due to her increased nutrient demand for lactation. This leads us to supplementation options. When cows are thin or grazing low-quality forages, some producers want to increase energy intake with corn, but this can backfire in some circumstances. Feeding corn on a forage-based diet can reduce forage intake and digestibility because the increased levels of starch from the corn alter rumen microflora and ruminal fermentation. The level of protein in the diet determines how corn supplementation affects cow performance. If the cow’s protein requirement is not met, feeding corn alone may actually increase body weight loss during gestation (Table 1) compared with feeding corn + protein or protein alone. Protein supplements improve cow nutritional status by increasing digestibility and intake of low-quality forages and/or increasing nutrient flow of protein from the rumen to the intestines. If cows are thin, both protein and energy supplementation is needed to increase BCS. With cows in good, acceptable BCS, protein supplementation on low-quality forages can maintain BCS or slightly increase BCS over winter. Thin cows (BCS ≤ 4) or young cows could be sorted and fed separately from the mature cowherd. This would allow for more strategic supplementa-

tion and decrease overall feed costs. Typically, a cow must gain 75 to 100 lbs of body weight to increase 1 full BCS, but during late gestation that number increases to account for fetal growth and placental weight. Thus, it is important to distinguish body weight differences due to differences in BCS and body weight changes resulting (and required) by fetal growth. At the end of the day, BCS is an insurance policy or risk management. It is easier to stay ahead while maintaining adequate BCS than letting cows slip and get behind. Getting behind during late gestation can decrease rebreeding performance of the cowherd and negatively influence calf performance. Things to consider for winter management: - Obtain a nutrient analysis of forage resources. - Inventory forage resources by quality. - Sort cowherd into nutritional needs groups (thin cows and young cows). - Match forage resources with those nutritional needs groups. - Determine supplemental needs and balance diets to minimize costs. -Use body condition score (BCS) as a guide and monitor throughout the winter. - Adjust supplemental energy for cold stress and/or for thin cows.

s a journalist, one thing I seem to collect a lot of is books. I took some time over the holidays to sort through my growing collection of books and magazines. I came across a magazine from my Dad’s collection of breed publications, the October-November 1973 issue of the Charolais Bull-o-Gram, a publication produced by Litton Charolais Ranch, Chillicothe, Mo., which also featured advertisements from additional Charolais breeders. My dad always spoke highly of Jerry Litton, editor of the publication, a U.S. Congressman and an astute cattleman. Dad believed; Litton was destined for the White House, but his life was cut short in a tragic plane crash.

As I read Litton’s editor column – ‘A time for Trust’, I couldn’t help but think how applicable this topic remains, fifty years later. Litton stated, “Several years ago I visited with a man who had left the corporate business world in the prime of his years to become a cattleman. His reason? He wanted to get in a business where the handshake and a man’s word was used instead of a 40-page

Demonstrating respect for your family, your team of employees, and your customers is a step to building a culture of trust. Showing interest in those who work for you so you understand their strengths and

can provide opportunities for them to shine. Taking the time to visit your bull customers and listen to the goals for their breeding program, builds trust through respect. RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY 100% OF THE TIME Litton said, “it takes two hands to have a handshake.” Fagerlin explains there are two-parts in a high-trust relationship – you must trust them, and they must trust you, both are your responsibility. Not only as a leader do you need to take the initiative to demonstrate to others that you trust them, but you must be able to demonstrate to them, that you are trustworthy in return. If you are shaking the hand of a fellow stockman hoping they will uphold their responsibility in the agreement, you must be accountable to do the same. For someone to trust you, they must have the confidence that you are dependable, honest, and will do what you say

you will do. UNCOMPROMISED EXCELLENCE IN ALL THAT WE DO “Leaders are held to a higher standard,” says Fagerlin. As a leader in the beef industry or your breed, do you portray a consistent message? Do you strive for excellence? Do you demonstrate not only competence in your role as a seedstock supplier, businessman, etc., but also take the initiative to acquire new knowledge and skills to enhance your business. There is too much information and change in our industry to believe we know it all. Being vulnerable and showing to others you are constantly learning builds mutual respect across your peers.

Rather than aiming to evaluate the other person’s every move and how that is measured up against your acceptability meter, how about taking the time to learn more about their needs, interests, skills, etc.? To build their trust, communicate the vision, outline your expectations and fulfill your role as the leader.

wenty-five years ago, Roger Jindra made a decision that would embark his family into the Angus business to a depth no one would have imagined. Roger grew up on the farm with his parents, Edwin and Jean Jindra, near Clarkson, NE, feeding cattle and raising hogs. On August 7, 1971, Roger and Gayedene Jindra were married and began farming and feeding cattle on their own nearby in northeastern Nebraska and started expanding to support their family. Roger and Edwin were very selective about the cattle they fed and would travel often to northwestern South Dakota to find cattle with the right attributes to earn the most profit.

In the 90s, Roger’s son, Nick, was very interested in the cattle and enjoyed helping outside and traveling along to sales. At age 8, he was eager to start 4-H and after a few years, Roger decided commercial cows were not going

to lead him in the right direction. They made a trip to South Dakota to further investigate the genetics the Jindras believed might have more potential to excel in all segments of the beef business. Those genetics traced back to Hoff Scotch Cap Angus, Bison, SD, owned by Doug and Molly Hoff. In 1994, Roger helped Nick purchase two heifers from Hoff Scotch Cap Angus. This became the root of his 4-H and FFA projects and what is now Jindra Angus.

PAST AND PRESENT As the development of their Angus herd unfolded, the Hoff

In the 80s, it was the black-

nosed Charolais cross calves that generally dominated in the feedlot. Although few and far between, there were a few times in their travels where Edwin and Roger stumbled upon some black-hided calves that were different. They had the attributes of a superior feeder calf without any crossbreeding. The Angus genetics in those type of cattle traced back to an established Angus breeder in northwestern South Dakota.

Scotch Cap breeding program was further infused through A.I and embryo transfer. Then, in 2006, the opportunity to further preserve and enhance the Scotch Cap influence arose. Hoff Scotch Cap Angus announced they were dispersing. Roger and Nick took advantage of this opportunity to purchase genetics from every prominent cow family offered in the dispersion sale. “Our plan was to continue to improve on these genetics while still maintaining the strong Scotch Cap bloodlines in our herd,” says Nick Jindra. This acquisition made Jindra Angus unique. “Unlike many programs, our genetics are very concentrated. Outcrossing is the easiest way to get heterosis but then what’s next? When you do it, you have to accept the fact that the extra performance you gained will be harder to accomplish in the next generation.” Jindras mission is to keep the attributes of the Scotch Cap herd intact. With this unified genetic foundation, he could build on the most desirable attributes of the cattle and allow his customers to be the ones to capitalize on the recovery of heterosis. “We want purity and solid genetics that are

INDUSTRY INFLUENCE

The quality of young herd sires raised at Jindra Angus has not gone unnoticed by the leading bull sire companies. Jindra Double Vision, the top-selling and lead-off bull in their annual bull sale was selected by Genex as a feature sire. In Double Vision’s first calf crop, a powerful son, Jindra 3rd Dimension, was born and purchased by Semex USA to serve in their Angus sire line-up. The recognition across the industry did not stop there. In

2015, top Jindra 3rd Dimension progeny were creating a buzz and an elite son, Jindra Acclaim, was purchased out of their annual bull sale by Macholan Angus, Linwood, NE, and Accelerated Genetics. Acclaim, as his name states, is gaining acclaim and doing so rightly. The American Angus Association recently reported Acclaim was sire of the third highest number of total registrations in 2019. Each of these industry-leading sires was a member of Jindra Angus’s pen of bulls at the National Western Stock Show in their respective years. The ranch exhibits annually in Denver to allow

Nick and Lydia are grateful for the success their cattle have had for their customers and the breed but acknowledge their personal commitment and dedication was instilled in them by their parents. “My father, Roger, and late mother, Gayedene, and my late grandparents, Edwin and Jean Jindra, are the reason we are here and have had the opportunities to formulate and enjoy success. We are so grateful for this life and opportunity. Our goal is to stay the course and endure the challenges.” Jindra recalls the continued support and guidance he received

from his dad and grandpa and starting the process in a time when a focused seedstock-based operation was not prevalent in northeast Nebraska. The entire Jindra family is there to help and support Lydia and Nick when needed especially during the busy and challenging times like sale days, calving, and during poor weather conditions. In addition to family, the Jindras highly value the great people and network of friends they have developed across this vast cattle industry. “It’s really an amazing group of people we work with in this big agricultural world. s we get into the full swing of calving, we look forward to seeing new, healthy calves nursing on a fresh pasture. The reality is we probably will have to deal with mud, rain, no sun, and blizzard conditions before we get to that point. All the weather conditions that challenge producers in the Midwest can lead to health issues in new calves. What can producers do to reduce health risks in new calves?

2) Spray the navel with iodine. One of the main ways infections get started is by entering through the navel. Even in the cleanest environments, it is important to use iodine on the navel. 3) Don’t use antibiotics at birth as a prophylactic. The main reason we try to discourage this is we don’t want to disrupt the establishment of the calf’s natural intestinal microflora. Calf health is dependent on optimal balance of intestinal bacteria, and antibiotics can alter this balance. Also the composition of colostrum will feed the proper bacteria to establish a normal balance, leaving antibiotics unnecessary. 4) Have a dry, bedded area that only the calves can use

1) The number one priority is to make sure calves get plenty of colostrum within 6 hours of birth. There is no substitute for this. Until the calf can start developing its own antibodies, it depends entirely on the transfer of antibodies from the mother’s colostrum

to its system. The gut is open and antibodies can cross over to the calf’s system for a short time. The rule of thumb has been that this can happen over the first 24 hours of the calf’s life, but the reality is that the ability to adsorb antibodies decreases until it is shut off at 24 hours. Colostrum is quantityas well as quality-dependent. The volume of intake is just as important as the quality. If the dam does not milk very well or is an old cow quality may not be as good, and supplementing with a commercial colostrum replacer should be considered. Many producers get colostrum from dairies and freeze it for future use; however, there is significant disease risk, primarily the chance of introducing Johne’s disease to the calf.

to get away from the mud. These areas are also a good place to put calf sized bunks to introduce creep feed. If using dry lots prior to going to grass, calves may be exposed to coccidia and show symptoms. If calves start eating creep feed

early in bunks, we’ve found that top dressing with amprolium crumbles at the approved rate can help control the symptoms. This product does not require a Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD).

s a seedstock supplier, you have worked hard to build the genetic base of your cow herd, followed stringent selection criteria when selecting herd sires to infuse into your breeding program, and methodically maintained herd records. However, with ever-changing technologies and expectations, how can you continue to reach your goals and best serve your customers?

“The seedstock supplier role has changed noticeably in the last five years from trying to produce the most bulls possible, to meet producer demand, and shifted to more significant involvement in all aspects of our customers’ business,” says Ryan Ludvigson of Ludvigson Stock Farms in Billings, Montana. “Seedstock producers must develop new programs and strategies to better

serve their customers’ needs and add value to their operations.” Ryan and his brother Park are fourth-generation suppliers of Red Angus genetics and market cattle across the nation at regional production sales with the main sale located in Billings. Ludvigson and his family have built a foundation as reputable breeders and marketers of top-quality genetics and were listed as the 9th largest seedstock producer in the U.S. in BEEF magazine’s 2019 ranking of Top 100 Seedstock Operations. “It’s certainly humbling to be in the top ten and we’re very appreciative of all our customers’ support. Our team views it as a huge responsibility to continue to improve the quality of our program to create more profitable genetics for producers while maintaining

core production traits like soundness, fertility, and longevity,” says Ludvigson. Ludvigson Stock Farms began in West Central Iowa and expanded in 2010 to include a cow herd in Lewiston, Montana. The family operation focuses on selling bulls and females in seven annual production sales in addition to private treaty offerings. Ludvigson has worked with hundreds of customers throughout his career, including serving as the Director of Marketing for Leachman Cattle Company from 1997 to 2000. During this role, he marketed thousands of bulls a year and worked closely with numerous cooperator herds.

Along with answering these questions, a seedstock supplier should have a selection strategy for both bull selection and replacement heifers. Breeding goals may vary from program to program depending on the environment of the operation and available resources, but ultimately it comes down to knowing your customers’ needs, Ludvigson believes. Do your customers predominantly sell at weaning or retain ownership and get paid on the grid? Do they want to retain

replacement heifers from within their program or purchase from an outside source? What kind of selection criteria do your customers use when investing in genetics for their operations, are they more data-driven or do the place greater value on phenotypic selection? The key component is that seedstock breeders ensure their program supplies cattle that fit the needs of their customers and tailor the goals of their breeding programs accordingly.

This begins by outlining breeding program goals which might include: 1) Do you sell calves at weaning? 2) Do you sell yearlings? 3) Do you retain ownership? 4) Do you sell replacement females? and 5) Who is your customer?

CHANGING ROLE Ludvigson predicts in 5-10 years, seedstock suppliers will be more involved in the implementation of technology from their cow herds through to their customers’ herds. DNA profiles will be incorporated in commercial herds to help them improve and to influence overall profitability. Utilizing DNA in commercial herds especially will be fundamental for both seedstock and commercial producers alike to make more effective breeding decisions, help seedstock breeders market the right cattle to the right producers, and better assist producers in marketing their calf crops. “To accomplish this immense undertaking means seedstock producers will need to lead the charge in demonstrating the value of DNA testing, and its application to commercial programs.”

a commercial producer should expect from their seedstock supplier: 1) Be a Stockmen - They should be Stockmen or Stockwomen that work with their cattle and know their cattle. 2) Cowherd Strength - evaluate the supplier’s total cow herd for all traits, e.g., conformation, soundness, feet and legs, udders, mothering ability, EPDs, etc. 3) Data Providers - make sure they are reporting all performance traits, ultrasound, heifer pregnancy, stayability, feed efficiency, frame score, scrotal, feet and leg scores, udder scores, etc. 4) Genetic Advancements - EPDs and DNA should be incorporated into the breeding program 5) Customer Service – the supplier should be there for you as a customer to help evaluate your program’s needs. think it is safe to say winter has arrived, and it looks like it is here to stay. The markets can easily be affected by Mother Nature. We have to look back to last winter as an example and hope for better this year. I specifically remember a conversation I was having with a friend last year on the 15th of January. I recall saying something like, “We are halfway through January, and things have been pretty easy this winter; we just need to get through the next 45 days!” I jinxed us, we all remember what happened over the next 60 days in the Midwest. The markets were affected in one way or another with loss of calves, more cows coming to town, fats not performing as well in the feedlot due to extra mud, and just guys having enough of it and cutting back or selling out altogether. As we have rolled into the new year, things have been looking solid, and the markets have been strong. As far as the fat market, things have been very solid with

the top Choice and Prime fats bringing in the mid to high 20’s. It should continue this way through the winter and into spring until some of the new crop calves come to market in early summer. Then we will likely see a bit of a dip.

The feeder market has continued to be solid as well, especially the bigger calves and yearling cattle, as people are aiming to finish in the April and May market. Those cattle are bringing about the same per pound as the cattle that are 100-200 pounds lighter. Most of the feeders are bringing around $900 - $1,100 per head consistently. The heifers are bringing anywhere from 12-20 cents back from the steers, and there seems to be some good buys in the heifer feeder market as I have seen some projections of heifer making $150-200 per head in the feedlots. The lighter calves (400 pounders) are worth the money as well. Granted, if you finish them out, they are around for a full year, but I have

seen a few guys buy these calves and background them until grass this spring. This program makes a lot of sense, and cash flows these little calves very well. The slaughter cow and bull market has started to pick up a little steam, and it appears like the fed cows will continue to do so here for the next 4 to 6 weeks as we will have a bit of a hole in the supply of slaughter cows.

The bred cow and heifer markets have been hit or miss. I have been hearing and seeing some of the better young cows, and better bred heifers bring a solid price, but not consistently. I continue to tell people that bred cows and heifers are genuinely a solid investment and will pay for themselves over the next couple of years if you have the resources to expand. Addison Wall, daughter of Patrick and Amanda Wall, of Pleasantville, Iowa has been chosen as the 2020 recipient of three registered Hereford heifers awarded by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation.

Initiated in an attempt to help young Iowans begin foundation beef herds, this is the tenth year of the Iowa Foundation Heifer Program. Addison was chosen from a group of extremely well qualified applicants. She is a 7th grader at Pleasantville Middle School in Pleasantville, IA where she is active in dance and band. Addison lives with her parents and her 6 year old brother, Brody, on a farm near Pleasantville. She is currently serving as the president of the Marion County “Just Us” 4-H Club, showing both market beef and breeding beef projects and also participates in Quiz Bowl. Addison is a member of the Iowa Jr Hereford Association and has participated at county, state and national events. She won the Individual Sales competition at the Jr National Hereford Expo at the age of 11. Her recommendations describe her as a student with leadership qualities who is willing to volunteer and accept responsibilities at her school, community and church. She is a competitive, hard-working,

enthusiastic young lady, willing to help others. About the Stockman. I’ve been involved with our family’s operation all of my life. I farm/ranch with my brother, Sam, and dad, Kelly. Sam and I bought the cow herd from our dad back in 2008. We raise Red and Black Angus cows, most of which are registered. In addition, we farm corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa in northern Minnesota.”
