it takes a team. We all know the importance of teamwork, but I wanted to take a minute to acknowledge all the spouses out there who work together on the farm or ranch every single day. Kudos to you! This is an extremely difficult thing to master, and I can say that because I also work with my husband every day. It turns into this crazy way of life, trying to find some sort of balance between sharing your passion and enjoying all the great things about working together, and then also holding yourself back from jabbing your spouse with the sorting stick. I get it. But, wow, how rewarding it can be! The couple on the front cover of this issue makes this teamwork thing look dreamy. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it as long as ‘the team’ is on the same page. So whoever your team is made up of, appreciate them! It takes a team to run a farm or ranch, and it also takes a team to keep this industry thriving. We are all a team. Thank you for all you do! As we are in the midst of bull sale season, The Stockman crew is here and ready to help promote you. Let us know how we can help.

The house has been rented every weekend during the summer months, with at least one weekend each month the rest of the year. Jim was not sure what to expect when they undertook the new adventure, but he and Twyla were pleasantly surprised at the response their new business venture provided. Many families stated they chose the ranch to experience some peace and quiet. One might think a lakefront property in Minnesota would offer this, but many lakes are popular with parties, water sports, and loud music. The ranch with its open prairie and distance from any city offers a serenity not found elsewhere.

times, it has been rented by young families from metropolitan areas. “I have heard a lot of stories about how grandpa grew up on a farm, but the grandkids went to college in the cities and never left. The grandkids want to experience a working ranch the way grandpa did,” Jim said. Some vegetarians have been guests of the Wulfs, too, and great conversation was had. “It’s a perfect opportunity to offer some education and firsthand experience with how we treat the cattle,” Jim stated.
UTILIZING TECHNOLOGY IN THE CATTLE OPERATION Visitors from the cities are often floored by the amount of technology used in the cattle operation. “They think we’re just standing out here holding a pitchfork,” Jim laughed. The cow herd is bred via AI to calve in mid-January through February.

Clean-up bulls are turned out, but most stick with the AI sire. RightMate from Allied Genetics is used extensively to analyze the genome of each cow and select a sire to perfectly complement her and ensure the best chance for an ideal calf.
EXPERIENCING FARM LIFE Cattle drives, rides in combines, and other ranch chores are also part of the experience depending on the time of year. The Wulfs are enthusiastic teachers, and they love to help those not familiar with agriculture to understand what cattlemen experience daily. Although the Wulfs cannot guarantee any specific activity, there is generally something happening to observe or join.

CLEAR SPRINGS MARKET In addition to a true ranch experience, the visitors of Clear Springs Cattle Co. may purchase beef for their grills during their stay or to take home. Clear Springs Market was added to market Clear Springs Cattle Company’s beef to visitors and consumers around the state. A large walk-in freezer was constructed to ensure an adequate supply is always available. Not only can patrons purchase beef right on the farm, a delivery route is run “on demand” where past visitors can meet for meat in St. Cloud, Willmar, or the Twin Cities. Beef is also sold by the whole, half, quarter, or eighth, and retail

cuts are available. “All beef is raised with the consumer in mind which is why each animal is handled with the best care, produced with no growth hormones, pasture raised, grain finished, single sourced, and registered Simmental and SimAn-

gus,” Jim explained. Local delivery is available up to 20 miles, and beef may be purchased on the farm Monday through Saturday with a phone call.
CLEAR SPRINGS’ CATTLE HERD In addition to these successful businesses is, of course, the cattle. Clear Springs Cattle Company maintains a herd of 350 Simmental and SimAngus cows. After years of breeding Limousin cattle, the Wulfs switched to Simmentals largely because of their friend, Tom Hook. Tom has a long history in the Simmental breed and is well-known for consistently producing exceptional cattle. The Wulfs adopted Tom’s slogan, “Bred for Balance.” Clear Springs Cattle Co. has enjoyed several years of sharing a successful production sale with Hook Farms, but this year’s sale will be the first solo undertaking. “We owe Tom a lot for the guidance he’s given us,” Jim said. Although the Wulfs are not new to the beef cattle industry, they have been favorably impressed with the Simmental “family” since they joined it ten years ago. “We like the Simmental cattle, but we love the Simmental people. They are in tune with the beef industry and focused on what it needs,” Jim shared. The genetic pool created by the men and women in the Simmental industry is deep and full of cattle that work for all cattlemen.

THE WULF FAMILY Jim and Twyla have three children. Justin works as a pipe welder in Walnut Grove, Minn., and he and his wife, Brittany, are kept busy with Madison, 7, and Grayson, 4, and their business, Wulf Fabrication and Piping. The Wulf’s son, Travis, is in charge of the Clear Springs’ cow herd; and son, Brady, heads up the Clear Springs Market operation, plus the farming. In addition to the cattle, the rental, and the meat businesses, a true passion of the entire Wulf family is stewardship and preservation of the land and natural resources. No-till farming is used and cover crops ensure as much topsoil as possible is conserved. Their carbon footprint is closely monitored. In addition, rotational grazing is used extensively to ensure the pasture is not overused, weeds are naturally controlled, and the cattle have adequate feed.

Karla H. Wilke, UNL Cow/Calf Systems and Stocker Management beef.unl.edu
WINTER SUPPLEMENTATION OF BEEF CALVES: WHEN SUPPLEMENTATION DOESN’T PAY S
pring born calves are often weaned in the fall, supplemented through the winter at a low rate of gain, and then graze summer grass, taking advantage of compensatory gain until feedlot entry. Many producers assume providing minimal protein supplementation to target approximately 1.0 pound/day gain during the winter is the most economical system. However, research data would suggest this assumption is not the most economical management system. A study evaluating feeding 450 pound steers 0, 1.1, 2.3, or 3.4 pounds of dried distillers grains (DDGS)/d (dry matter basis) while the calves grazed dormant native range reported a linear gain response of 0.60, 1.06, 1.41, and 1.72 pounds/day, respectively. However, when the calves were subsequently allowed to graze high quality growing forage, the calves that were not supplemented on dormant range experienced compensatory gain and had a similar ending body weight to the calves supplemented with 1.1 pound of DDGS (625 pounds for both treatments). Those non-supplemented calves compensated 100% compared to the low supplemen-
28
tation level. However, they only compensated 38% and 46% compared with the two higher levels of supplementation and those calves maintained a weight advantage of 653 and 656 pounds, respectively. Therefore, the producer who spent money to achieve only 1 pound/day gain on dormant range lost money after grazing better quality forage because those calves weighed the same as the group that did not incur supplement expense. Supplement expense was optimal when calves were supplemented 2.3 pounds of DDGS targeting 1.5 pounds/d gain, regardless if DDGS was priced high or low if calves were kept through a high quality forage grazing phase. If calves were sold after winter grazing, supplementing with 3.4 pounds of DDGS resulted in the best economic analysis. In a meta-analysis of six studies, 500-pound calves were supplemented to target a winter rate of gain of 0.5 or 1.5 pounds/d. After summer grazing, the calves supplemented to target the low rate of winter gain only compensated 37% (weighing 768 pounds) resulting in the calves targeted for a higher winter rate of gain being heavier at feedlot entry
(weighing 840 pounds). Subsequently, the calves targeted for high gain in the winter were heavier at harvest (1307 pounds vs. 1230 pounds), successfully maintaining that weight advantage through all three phases of production. The economic analysis determined that the most profitable steers were the ones gaining 1.5 pounds/d on dormant winter range regardless of whether DDGS was priced low or high. These study results suggest that targeting winter gain of 1.5 pounds/ day is most likely to result in added body weight that is maintained throughout subsequent phases including summer grazing and feedlot finishing and can be an economical practice. More importantly, these data suggest that spending money to supplement cattle at a low rate of gain and having that weight advantage lost in subsequent phases is costly to producers. Livestock producers rebuild after losing almost everything.
W
hen thinking about Kansas farmland, one might envision fields filled with wheat gently swaying in the breeze or cattle comfortably grazing in pastures. But right now, in part of Kansas, some ranches look more like desolate, desert wastelands than picturesque farmland. “I have never been to a desert before, but that is what it looks like. There is literally nothing here but dirt, black soot, or sand,” Stephanie Dickerson, with Bar S Ranch, explained. Stephanie and David Dickerson’s family along with Stephanie’s parents, Ken and Pat Stielow, operate Bar S Ranch, one of the ranches
hit hardest by the fires. “What hurt me the most was the putting down of the cows, just driving by and looking at what used to be beautiful pasture or the tree belt that my great-grandfather built,” Stephanie shared. “It’s those things that really get to me.”
KANSAS FOUR COUNTY FIRE In the afternoon on December 15, 2021, people living in Russell, Rooks, Ellis, and Osborne counties started to feel uneasy. No rain for 60 days, coupled with high wind advisories, put firefighters, ranchers, and residents on alert. “Condi-
tions were extremely conducive for a fire like this. So, everyone was on edge to begin with,” Clinton Laflin, local rancher and extension agent, recalled. The first of many blazes sparked near Fairport, Kan., around one o’clock that afternoon. It would be the beginning of a massive wildfire that would spread across the four-county area, leaving little in its wake. Firefighters believe the fire started when wind gusts knocked down electrical lines running to oil pumps in a field. “The rural firefighters and volunteers need a med-

al for what they tried to do, because this fire was 10 miles wide and 35 miles long,” Laflin stated. Acres upon acres of dry winter forage in the Kansas fields, provided fuel for the raging blaze. In the end, more than 400,000 acres burned, hundreds of cattle died, miles of fence disintegrated, and numerous homes and barns were reduced to ashes. Two people lost their lives that day. “Any life lost is one too many, but it is amazing there wasn’t more,” Laflin said. The fire, later named the Four County Fire, dealt a crushing blow to ranchers who live with hearts devoted to land and livestock. Yet, in the midst of the devastation, thankfulness and hope abound.
BAR S RANCH’S STORY The multigenerational ranch operates on 21,000 acres in Paradise, Kan. Bar S Ranch runs 600 black Angus cows, 150 Red Angus cows, and 200 Charolais cows. The ranch produces national champion heifers and bulls, sells more than a hundred herd bulls a year, and markets registered and commercial heifers. The Dickerson and Stielow families work together to run Bar S Ranch. Their homes, show barn, and sale barn all reside on interconnected family property. “We always thought we were so fortunate because everything that we have is right here,” Stephanie explained. “It is so easy to move things from one side of the ranch to the other side of the ranch. But that came back to bite us that night, because the fire took all of it.”
THE DAY THE FIRE STRUCK Just like all of their neighbors, Stephanie and David Dickerson felt tense on that December afternoon. “Around noon I told my husband there is just something that is off about this day – it was not normal,” Stephanie recalled. THE STOCKMAN | February 2022
opposite Show barn remnants. above Charred show equipment, barn, and pens. below David and Stephanie Dickerson’s home, destroyed.
In the middle of the afternoon, the sky suddenly darkened. Dust started blowing so hard, the Dickersons, who were working in their show barn, couldn’t see their home only 75 yards away. Then, news of the fire made its way to the Dickersons. Fire was closing in on their neighbors’ horse barn, and their neighbors called to ask David and Stephanie to help them save their prized roping horses. The Dickersons, along with their son, Jayce, and his college roommate, Austin Clock, headed to help, driving two trucks with trailers in tow. By the time they made the eight-mile drive to their neigh45

bors’ ranch, it was too late – the fire was too close. Their neighbors told the Dickersons that the horses had been let out of the barn with hopes the animals would survive. The four left their neighbors and headed back toward Bar S Ranch. But the powerful wind gusts tipped over David and Jayce’s truck and trailer. The truck and trailer landed on its side, with the truck passenger side pressed against the ground. Austin bolted out of Stephanie’s truck to get David and Jayce out of the toppled vehicle. “Austin went to open the driver’s side door to get them out. When he opened the door, the door completely ripped off and blew away,” Stephanie said. In the meantime, another wind gust tore off the bumper trailer connected to Stephanie’s truck, and the trailer rolled into the ditch. below (l–r) Jayce, Stephanie and David Dickerson.
SURROUNDED BY FIRE They all piled into Stephanie’s truck and drove in a direction they thought was away from the fire. But unbeknownst to the Dickersons, the wind had shifted position, pushing the wildfire their way. All of a sudden, they were trapped. “We couldn’t go west, we couldn’t go south, we couldn’t go east. There were no roads north where we were at,” Stephanie recalled. They were surrounded by fire. Fortunately, volunteer firefighters in two pickup fire trucks and a tanker truck were caught in the same area. The group moved to a wheat field, with flames all around. “We sat in the middle of the wheat field – flames in the front and behind,” Stephanie said.
The firefighters sprayed water over the top of the vehicles as the fire passed. The constant flow of water protected them from the hot flames. After almost an hour, the danger had passed. “When they gave us the all clear, everything around us was burned,” Stephanie recalled. “When the fire truck next to us backed up, there was a perfect circle in the middle of that wheat field where our vehicles were sitting that wasn’t burnt.”
DEVASTATION ON THE HOMESTEAD By now, the wildfires were racing across the four-county area, wind speeds clocking over 100 mph. But Stephanie couldn’t wait until morning to know the fate of Bar S Ranch. So, they weaved their way past downed power poles, burning trees, and flaming fields toward home. “We were probably two miles from our home and I could see flames coming out of our house. As we got closer, I could tell our show barn was on fire, our hay shed was on fire, and the calving shed was on fire,” Stephanie recollected. The house her great-grandfather built and the tree belt he planted were also consumed by flames. There was devastation everywhere.
SUNRISE SHEDS LIGHT ON THE LOSS The morning light would not be a friend. As the sun rose, ranchers returned home to assess their losses. For many, the fire’s toll was great. 46

know if we are going to have to put them all down and I don’t want that etched in your mind,’” Stephanie recalled through tears. All but one show calf survived, but a group of 45 recipient cows and fall embryo transfer calves did not make it. Bar S Ranch had held high hopes for the ET calves because of the calves’ elite genetics. Bar S Ranch’s group of 11 herd bulls also died in the fire.

Kansans lost their homes, barns, hay, supplies, equipment, and part or all of their cow herds. For Stephanie and David - little was left. The morning after the fire, David urged Stephanie to stay be
hind while he surveyed the damage. “My fulltime job is on the ranch and the show calves are pretty much my babies. So, my husband said, ‘You cannot go out there because I don’t know what they are like. I don’t
In the days to come, the Dickersons, like many of their neighbors, would have to put down cattle severely injured in the fire. In addition, the grim task of digging mass graves for the deceased animals ensued.
RECOVERING AND REBUILDING Fellow livestock producers from near and far immediately stepped up to help the Kansas ranchers. The surviving cattle were moved to neighboring pastures or to other ranches, both in and out of state. FFA students arrived to roll up downed fence, volunteers assisted with treating cattle, and other individuals donated feed, hay, and supplies. Though farmers are the first to want to lend a hand, they are typically the last ones to ask for a helping hand. The Kansas ranchers were deeply moved by the outpouring of generosity. “It is overwhelming,” Stephanie shared. “Us farmers and ranchers, we don’t like to take things from people. So, it is very humbling.” Ranchers are no stranger to loss, heartbreak, or pain – sometimes it is part of their job. But devastation this widespread can test even the most seasoned of them all. Yet, the hearts of ranchers are strong, their spirits resilient, their friends faithful, and nothing can extinguish their passion for their profession.

HOW TO HELP WITH RECOVERY EFFORTS The Kansas Livestock Association and Kansas Livestock Foundation created a fund to assist ranchers impacted by the Four County Fire. For more information: kla.org or check donations can be mailed to the Kansas Livestock Foundation at 6031 SW 37th Street, Topeka, KS, 66614. Donations can also be made through Southwind Bank, P.O. Box 433, Russell, KS 67665. The ranchers are in need of fencing material to rebuild miles and miles of fence. Due to supply chain issues in the U.S., fencing supplies are in short supply. Donations of fencing materials, labor to build fence, or information on where fencing supplies can be purchased are appreciated. DO GRASS VARIETIES REALLY MATTER? Analyzing Research to Optimize Forage Performance
I
f you are a farmer, you’ve likely made most of your purchasing decisions for your crop acres next spring. You’ve had brochures and booklets to sort through from multiple brands including dozens of varieties with various maturities. More than likely, you haven’t received a booklet with grass species and the comparisons of each variety. Since there aren’t companies talking about improved varieties, does it really matter what you plant, and will you see a difference in your fields? Now, I’ll be the first to admit that the genetic advancement in grass varieties hasn’t held par with that of grains. The funding and research aren’t a drop in the bucket compared to what has been spent in the corn or soybean industry, and for that fact improvements are slower. Yet, there are breeding programs and universities doing trial research that I want to highlight here. The perennial cool season grasses that have seen some of the most impactful genetic advancement include orchardgrass, tall forage fescue, and perennial ryegrass. These are some of the most widely used and adaptable grasses that have been very marketable. The University of Wisconsin, University of 56
Kentucky, and Penn State are good resources that promote their trial research on their websites. They are easily the most consistent in their trial work and have the most extensive websites for publishing the data. Private grass breeding companies also have plenty of literature of their developments. Orchardgrass tends to be the most popular forage grass used with alfalfa for hay in the Upper Midwest. Orchardgrass is broken into maturity (heading) groups ranging from early, medium, late, and very late. Generally, with late maturing orchardgrass, the varieties will grow and mature more evenly with alfalfa and the earlier maturing varieties tend to do better in drier climates. Amongst orchardgrass varieties there tends to be near a one ton per acre difference in yield. This is quite drastic, considering the field will last over five years and good quality grass is valued over $150 per ton. Tall forage fescues are categorized as endophyte free of novel as a novel endophyte. Either will provide much higher animal performance than the fescues that contain toxic endophytes. Based on the yield data that the University of Kentucky is publicizing, there is a
1.5 ton per acre yield difference over a twoyear period between the old K31 tall fescue and the improved varieties. The improved varieties are shown to yield over 4.5 tons per acre in a year. Its yield potential coupled with its heat persistence has made fescue a necessity for summer forage. Perennial ryegrass yield trials contain more varieties than any other grass species. The ryegrasses are broken down into Diploid and Tetraploid type ryegrasses which is the classification of how many sets of chromosomes each has. The practical difference is that Tetraploid types are generally taller with more tillers and wider leaves. Diploid types are better used for pastures as they tolerate heavy grazing by persisting through more tillering. Perennial grasses are short lived in comparison to other perennials and winter hardiness varies drastically amongst varieties. So, if you live in the North be sure to select for increased winter hardiness if you expect a stand for more than
a couple years. Perennial ryegrass should always be a component in establishing a pasture due to its high yield perfor m a nc e, palatability, and persistence.
This is just a snapshot of what you can find if you are looking for detailed information on grass varieties. The point I’m trying to push is that there are performance trials for grass varieties available to you, but you’ll need to do more research. You can make huge strides with yield and quality performance if you put the time into selecting the best varieties for your fields.

Chan Phillips’ journey through the cattle industry. he road Chan Phillips traveled T through the decades has led him
through cattle pastures and show rings all over the country. “I am on the road all the time,” Chan Phillips shared. “I have a GMC pickup truck sitting out here that is a year old and it has 60,000 miles on it.” The cattleman’s life path includes working on a slaughterhouse kill floor, raising the notorious Simmental bull HPF Quantum Leap Z952, judging nearly every major cattle show, and admiring the Manhattan skyline from an oil tycoon’s mansion in New York. All these experiences and countless more came to fruition due to Chan’s passion for the cattle industry. “I have been very blessed and I tell young people all the time, ‘Find something you are passionate about, follow your heart, and the rest will come,’” Chan said. 66
WHERE IT ALL STARTED
in the future, as a judge.
Throughout Chan’s childhood he was immersed in the livestock industry. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all worked at a sale barn in Maysville, Ky. “I grew up in cattle everyday - seeing the good, the bad, and the ugly,” Chan said.
After Chan’s first experience in the show ring as a kid at NAILE, his enthusiasm for show cattle took off and never slowed down.
The zeal for Simmental cattle sparked when Chan was only six years old. In 1972, he acquired his first Simmental cow. “And I got the fever really bad. I was obsessed with it,” Chan recalled. Two years later, he showed a bobtailed, spotted Simmental steer at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Ky. His calf was “broke to ride” and stood fifteenth in class. At that time, the young Chan Phillips would never have dreamed he would return to NAILE many times
JOURNEY THROUGH TEENS AND TWENTIES Chan clocked thousands of miles on the road as a teenager, competing at cattle shows and dedicating time to the American Junior Simmental Association (AJSA). In his twenties, Chan worked as a herdsman for ranches in Texas and Indiana. In the late 1980s, Chan snagged his best victory yet at an AJSA National Classic show. He met fellow Simmental enthusiast, Tonya Snider. The two were wed several years later. Chan and Tonya have been married for more than 30 years, and February 2022 | THE STOCKMAN

have two children; Morgan and AK. When Chan and Tonya decided to get married; Chan returned home to Kentucky, where his family operated a slaughterhouse. “So, to make ends meet when I moved home, I worked on the kill floor every Monday and I started custom fitting cattle in an old tobacco barn,” Chan explained.
CUSTOM FITTING CHAMPIONS
________
THE STOCKMAN | February 2022
The custom fitting business called, Phillips Cattle Company, boomed. In no time, Phillips Cattle Company had outgrown the tobacco barn. That led, Chan and Tonya, to build a larger facility to house their growing business. “At one point we had over 140 head of either show or 67
sale cattle there in Maysville on a per day charge,” Chan said. The fitting success poured over to the show ring. In 1993, the Phillips’ showed the first black Simmental heifer to win the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colo. They achieved a repeat performance in 1994. In fact, their winning streak at Denver with a grand champion heifer or bull continued every year from 1993 to 2004. “It was so lucky,” Chan said. “I look back on it and I think, golly.”
BROTHERS START ROCKING P LIVESTOCK The success of Phillips Cattle Company opened the door for
Chan’s younger brother, Keith, who was working at Express Ranches, to move back to Kentucky. Chan and Keith formed a partnership and started Rocking P Livestock. “We basically started at zero in terms of land and cattle,” Chan shared. “Now, he and I, have 900 acres of deeded ground and we lease about that much more. And we run about 350 momma cows.”
Currently, the Phillips families keep calves for their operation and sell cooperator calves to Circle M Farms and Red River Farms. Chan’s son, AK, serves as general manager for Red River Farms in Grand Saline, Texas.
For the past 20 years, Rocking P Livestock has focused on Simmental and SimAngus registered cattle. The Phillips brothers implant a couple hundred embryos a year, producing elite genetics. Keith, his wife Lindsay, and their children; Josie and Wyatt, play an integral role in the success of Rocking P Livestock.

WORKING WITH THE ROCKEFELLERS Chan’s journey in the cattle industry has led him to opportunities beyond his wildest dreams. One such case includes his years as farm manager and consultant for David Rockefeller’s Hudson Pines Farm in New York. “I remember exactly where I was at,” Chan recalled. “I was in the Sacramento airport, coming through after judging the Angus show in Reno. My phone rang and it was a New York number.” The person calling Chan was David Rockefeller’s granddaughter, who was the executive director of the legendary Hudson Pines Farm. After a plane ride to New York, a tour of Hudson Pines Farm, and

lunch on the balcony of Rockefeller’s Manhattan mansion, the Rockefellers asked Chan to run their cattle operation. For several years following that meeting, Chan boarded a plane on Mondays, flew to New York, managed Hudson Pines Farm’s herd, and then flew back to Kentucky on Fridays. Throughout his tenure at Hudson Pines Farm, Chan developed a production sale and a nationally competitive show string. When Chan’s daughter Morgan was getting ready to start high school, Chan stepped into a role as consultant with Hudson Pines Farm. This allowed Chan to spend more time with his family in Kentucky.
LANDING WITH CIRCLE M FARMS After close to a decade with Hudson Pines Farm, Chan transitioned to a new opportunity with Circle M Farms. Through the years, Chan has collaborated with Circle M Farms’ owner, Craig McCallum, to build strong cow families. Circle M Farms dispersed its large cattle operation in 2017. But 69

now, Chan and Craig are back at it again, raising elite Simmental, SimAngus, Angus, and Red Angus cattle. Currently, Circle M Farms operates with 50 momma cows. The operation is split into two divisions, one in Mount Vernon, Mo. and the other in Rockwall, Texas. Chan chose the Missouri division for a reason unrelated to cattle – the Missouri farm is 12 miles from his grandson.
SELECTING THE BEST Chan and his partners scour the country to find cattle to add to their programs. In order for a female to make it into their donor battery, she must land in the top one percentile for pedigree and phenotype. Finding such elite females, requires relentless searching. “One week in June, Craig and I, put 3,300 miles on a rental car just going through Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky looking at cattle,” Chan explained. “We do that quite a bit. Our goal is to beat the bushes.” In addition to their top one percentile philosophy, they evaluate cattle for foot shape, pastern set, and length of stride. “When I am evaluating one at a show or trying to select one, if they are not good at the ground, I just walk away. It all starts at the ground - the foundation,” Chan stated.
70
One of Circle M Farms’ and Rocking P Livestock’s donors, RP/BRC Built to Love G103.
Their cattle must also possess internal dimension and rib shape in order to be efficient, especially in regions rich in fescue. Additionally, whether the animal is headed to the show ring or sale barn, eye appeal is a factor. Chan stated anytime an animal is assessed by visual appraisal, its value increases if it has eye appeal.
MARKETING THE HERD Circle M Farms and Rocking P Livestock both market open heifers. The top-end heifers are sold as show heifer prospects, the middle group retained as replacements, and the lower-end marketed across the scales as feeder cattle. Both farms are guest consignors at a production sale hosted at Red River Farms each fall. At the production sale, Chan sells top-end open and bred heifers and occasionally semen or genetic packages.
stowed upon him. “I never was on a collegiate team. I never gave a set of reasons,” Chan said. But the cattle world thought differently. Chan was asked to judge county shows, then state fairs, and national shows. Chan has judged almost every major show, in every cattle breed. He’s known for his thorough and clear reasons. “I am more of a cow man reason, type of guy. I try not to say anything that I can’t spell,” he added with a chuckle. When Chan reflects on the life path he’s walked, drove, and flown – he counts himself blessed. “I have never gone to work a day in my life really,” he concluded. learn more rockingplivestock.com

Rocking P Livestock holds an annual bull sale in March. The two farms sell about 80 bulls a year between the yearly sale and private treaty.
JUDGING It may seem fitting, that someone who has spent his whole life evaluating cattle would be asked to judge cattle shows. But Chan never thought that would be an honor beFebruary 2022 | THE STOCKMAN

ANAPLASMOSIS: NOT JUST A SOUTHERN DISEASE T
wo years ago, I was called out to a farm to post a cow that had potentially died from ingesting poisonous plants. When I opened her up, she had a couple things that made me suspect Anaplasmosis. We historically have not seen a lot of Anaplasmosis in our part of Iowa, but we sent in samples to the lab and received confirmation. In this case, the owner had bought a herd sire from down south in Oklahoma and we confirmed that he was positive with a blood test. Since we didn’t know the status of the bull prior to being introduced to the herd, it’s hard to be sure he brought the disease in, but there would be a high probability that was the source as the herd had no prior history of the disease. This occurred in August right during the height of the
76
fly season. One of the main ways that Anaplasmosis spreads is by insect vectors. During that same year, we had at least four other herds in which we diagnosed Anaplasmosis. In one of these herds, the owner had purchased a large number of cows from Nebraska. Prior to that the herd had not had any cases, so probably had brought it in with those purchased cows. Recently, we have a client that has purchased some short term cows out of Kansas and has had two of these cows show clinical Anaplasmosis. In communications with a former ISU diagnostic lab veterinarian, she stated that Anaplasmosis has gained more of a foothold in Iowa. About 10 to 15 years ago, there were a lot of cows purchased
in Texas and brought up to Iowa because of a severe drought they were having there. It was at that time that Anaplasmosis probably started to become more prevalent and endemic in Iowa. Especially south of I-80. Currently my niece, Abby Collison, is a senior in veterinary school at Iowa State. She recently did a Grand Rounds presentation on Anaplasmosis at the veterinary school. Part of her presentation is a client handout for producers dealing with Anaplasmosis and I would like to share it in this article. It’s a very well written document that covers a lot of relevant information for producers.

BOVINE ANAPLASMOSIS By: Abby Collison, senior veterinary student
WHAT IS ANAPLASMOSIS? Anaplasmosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria (known as anaplasma marginale) that result in the destruction of red blood cells. Anaplasma marginale is spread by blood transmission from an infected animal to a naïve animal. This may be via an infected tick, biting insect, dirty needles, dehorning or tattooing equipment, etc. The bacteria infect the animal’s red blood cells causing the immune system to recognize the cells as foreign, attacking and destroying them.
HOW WILL YOUR ANIMAL PRESENT WITH ANAPLASMOSIS? Anaplasmosis will present with increasing severity with increasing age. Calves usually will not show clinical disease, while the 3 year olds will have the most significant disease. Non-specific signs such as weakness, anorexia, fever, and rapid weight loss will be observed. Yellowed (jaundiced) membranes such as the gums, vulva, and around the eyes occur. Oxygen deprivation due to anemia can occur causing aggressive behavior and abortion. Due to the nature of spread, Anaplasmosis is commonly seen during vector season (around May - September in Iowa). Anaplasmosis in cattle is a complex disease and if you suspect you have it, work closely with your veterinarian to develop a plan that works best for your herd in controlling it.
THE STOCKMAN | February 2022
WHAT CAN YOUR VETERINARIAN DO TO TREAT IT? Early recognition of signs provides the best opportunity for treatment. Treatment of choice is antibiotics, often long-acting oxytetracycline. Depending on the animal, a blood transfusion may be warranted. One important aspect of treatment is to handle these animals quietly and calmly, limiting movement. Due to the lack of oxygen, these stressors can cause them to decompensate and die suddenly. As such, it is often recommended your veterinarian travels to you to examine the cow. The most critical time period is the first four to nine days of symptoms, with slow recovery occurring for the next two to three months. If you suspect Anaplasmosis in your herd, contact your veterinarian for further diagnosis and a treatment plan.
WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF ANAPLASMOSIS? Anaplasmosis is an economically important disease as it can lead to abortions, death of adult cows, and infertility. This is especially true as it becomes increasingly apparent in Iowa. If cattle are exposed as calves, they develop immunity and
thus will not show clinical signs. However, as older cattle are first exposed to the disease as it travels into the region, clinical signs are more severe. Newly infected cattle over 3 years of age have a 30 to 50 percent mortality rate. Recovered animals should no longer present with clinical disease though they will become carriers, increasing the spread of disease in the region.
HOW CAN YOU CONTROL / PREVENT ANAPLASMOSIS? One main control method is to decrease vector exposure (ticks, biting insects, etc.). Pour on products, fly tags, etc. implemented just prior to vector season can help reduce the spread. Medicated feed or mineral mixes requiring a veterinary feed directive can be implemented during the vector season. Using a new needle for each animal and disinfecting bloody equipment is also important. While not always possible, one method is to maintain a disease-free herd. Contact your veterinarian to assess your herd’s risk and determine the prevention plan that best fits your herd.

During food preparation, include in your work area only items and equipment necessary for the particular recipe you are making - eliminate all extras. “
The LCC brand emerged from its beginning in 1955, when I began my 4-H career with a Polled Hereford heifer project. In 1966, Jack and I married and were gifted two Hereford heifers as a wedding gift from my parents. Today, it’s a family enterprise with headquarters on the farm where I was raised south of Macomb, Ill. The family enterprise includes: son Monte, his wife Carrie, and their son Rhett; son Brent, his wife Kris, daughter Morgan, and son Blake; son Cody, his wife Abby, sons Nash and Tuck, and son Cory, always in our hearts. We maintain approximately 30 registered Hereford cows, 25 replacement heifers, along with 75 recipient cows, elite donors and a nationally recognized herd bull battery. LCC is a strong supporter of state and national junior Hereford associations, having had three fourth generation family cooks. members participating and two waiting to jump on board. Hereford cattle have played a major role in determining the destiny of our family. It’s not only our business, but it provides an opportunity to share time together as a family and to make new friends and memories.

In the News CALE HINRICHSEN JOINS THE RED ANGUS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 13, 2022 DE N V E R – The Red Angus Association of America welc ome s Cale Hinrichsen to its marketing team as a commercial marketing specialist. Hinrichsen will travel extensively to ranches and sales to promote RAAA marketing programs, conduct audits for the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program and work closely with commercial producers to achieve their individual herd goals. “We are pleased to add Cale to our team,” said Harold Bertz, RAAA director of commercial marketing. “He brings real world knowledge, experience and enthusiasm that Red Angus producers will appreciate. We look forward to Cale’s contributions to our commercial producers’ marketing efforts.” Originally from Westmoreland, Kan., Hinrichsen comes from a cattle industry family. A fourth-generation rancher, he and his family own and operate Hinrichsen Ranch, a registered Angus cow-calf operation. Throughout his youth, Hinrichsen was heavily involved in junior cattle programs at both the state and national levels. He attended Oklahoma State University and graduated with a bachelor of science in agribusiness with minors in marketing and farm real
estate appraisal in May 2021. While at OSU, he was a member of the OSU livestock judging team, Block & Bridle, collegiate Farm Bureau and the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.
RED ANGUS NOW ELIGIBLE FOR ANGUS BRANDED BEEF PROGRAMS
Outside of his career goals, Hinrichsen plays an active role in his family’s operation, enjoys hunting and is an avid golfer.
DENVER – The Red Angus Association of America recently completed negotiations with USDA on the breed’s Live Animals Specification form or GLA Schedule. The result is Red Angus can now be included in Angus-labeled branded beef programs, at the request of each individual brand program.
“I am excited about joining the Red Angus Association of America as it gives me the opportunity to utilize my previous knowledge and experiences to help producers maximize their potential and marketing opportunities. I have always enjoyed great cattle and meeting people in the livestock industry. Working for RAAA allows me to meet with Red Angus producers and I look forward to visiting their ranches throughout the upcoming year,” said Hinrichsen. Hinrichsen started in his new role on Dec. 31 and can be reached at cale@redangus.org or (785) 4563969. The Red Angus Association of America serves the beef industry by enhancing and promoting the measurable advantages of Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced cattle. The RAAA provides commercial producers with objectively described cattle by implementing new technologies and utilizing scientifically sound principles that quantify traits of economic importance to beef producers in all segments of the beef industry. For more information, visit www.RedAngus.org. For more information, contact: Brandi Buzzard Frobose, RAAA Director of Communications (785)-448-0239 or email Brandi at: brandi@redangus.org.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Dec. 14, 2021
Red Angus has always been “Angus,” and USDA has officially acknowledged that fact by enabling Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced cattle that meet certain requirements to join black-hided animals in as many Angus beef brands as decide in favor of their inclusion. Both genotypic and phenotypic qualification criteria are contained in the new GLA Live Animal Specification Schedule, which can be viewed on the USDA website. This change makes logical sense, as Red Angus cattle originated from the same Scottish gene pool as black Angus and are therefore genetically Angus. Beef demand is expected to remain high in 2022 and beyond, so the addition of Red Angus-influenced cattle to high-quality Angus-based branded beef programs fills a need which will benefit cowcalf producers, cattle feeders, packers and consumers. Adding Red Angus to existing Angus beef programs is a simple process – brand owners simply need to contact USDA and request the inclusion of the RAAA GLA Schedule as part of their program’s live animal specs, then make associated minor verbiage changes (continued on page 98)

In the News (con’t.) in their own G-Schedules. RAAA can assist in this process, which in most cases, takes very little time to prepare, and is followed by a short correspondence period with USDA-AMS. RAAA is pleased that USDA recognizes that Red Angus are genetically Angus and looks forward to working with many branded Angus lines in 2022 and beyond, and will support efforts to help these brands grow, both in quality and volume, to become even more successful. 2022 FOUNDATION HEIFER AWARD WINNER Ve r o n ic a Lents, daughter of Kevin and Mallory Lents, of Creston, Iowa has recently been announced as the 2022 recipient of the Iowa Foundation Heifer Award. As an award winner, she received three purebred Red Angus bred heifers which were purchased from Mike and Dianna Nolin’s Red Angus herd located at Monroe, Iowa. The foundation heifers of the breed of the winner’s choice are awarded each year by Iowa Beef Breeds Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. At the end of five years, Veronica will be expected to repay $6,000 to help with funding to keep the program going into the future. The
program is in year 12 and was developed to help youth establish purebred seedstock herds of their own. Veronica is a seventh-grade student at Mayflower Heritage Christian School in Creston and she is involved with sports in the Creston public middle school. She is an active member of her church and the Highland Highlights 4-H Club where she has been involved in a number of community service projects. In addition, she is a member of the Iowa Red Angus State Association and the National Red Angus Association. She shares her family’s love of the Red Angus breed and has shown not only at her local county fair, but also at the Iowa State Fair, Iowa Beef Expo, Iowa Red Angus Field Days and numerous IJBBA jackpot shows. She has participated in contests such as: speech, livestock judging, cattlemen’s quiz, and salesmanship and has encouraged others to do the same. Veronica’s recommendations credit her with goals of striving for excellence, being a peer role model and having an outstanding work ethic. She is planning to learn more about genetics, breeding, feeding, grazing practices, budgets and promotion of the beef industry. She is not only a good showman, but is also well versed in current beef industry issues. She will be honored at the Iowa Red Angus Association Banquet to be held on Saturday, February 12th at 7:00 pm during the Iowa Beef Expo and at the IJBBA Year End Awards held at 4:30 pm on Friday, February 18, 2022 in the Pavilion at the Iowa State Fair Grounds. In the News (con’t.) herdsman and manager. L83 Ranch holds an annual production sale and has produced and shown numerous state and national champions. L83 Ranch runs registered Red Angus and Hereford cattle and farms several thousand acres; Ben manages everything on the ranch from breeding decisions to crop rotations to purchasing decisions. “Ben has always wanted to be where he is today. He has worked so hard for everything that he’s accomplished and there isn’t a time-
card big enough for time and passion he pours into the ranch. He learns something at every show he goes to and shares it with those around him,” remarked Rylee Marthaler, Ben’s sister. She added, “There are always people asking him for advice and favors, and he very rarely says ‘no.’ He doesn’t hesitate to drop everything and help a friend. For example, when he drops cattle at a customer’s home, he has been known to do their chores and feed the dog,
as well! I am so proud of the humble, genuine, kind and hard-working man he is.” The Herdsman of the Year is presented to a hands-on individual who has most effectively presented his or herself in a professional manner while at the show. What about the beef cattle industry excites you the most? Cattle people are a genuine and loyal industry, dedicated to their animals and their land. Anywhere you travel you never meet a stranger. The past two years have shown us more than ever that we are connected by the same commonsense goals.”
The most important lesson you’ve learned in this business? Follow your passion and you will not be disappointed.”
Your go-to sorting apparatus? Me, myself and I! LOL! I really feel I get along better if it’s just me. I’m out there every day with them. But I would say if I do some simple thing like take a bale of hay or feed, to the group of cattle I need to sort a day before, they sort a lot easier.”
What is your least favorite job on the farm? Treating sickness. I just don’t like the fact that they need to be treated. It makes me feel like I’ve let them down.”

A conversation with everyday Stockmen,
Dale Studer Studer Shorthorns - Creston, Iowa
Your favorite non-farm activity to do in your free time? Describe your best or worst day. One of the worst days has to be finding one of your herd bulls dead in the pasture or having to dispose of an injured animal. It never gets any easier. On the same hand, the best part of the day is the early morning pasture checks, there is so much to nature that the average person misses at sunup.”
Which animal (any species) has left the greatest impact on you? Rabbits! I raised purebred rabbits as a child and the passion still lingers. I’m always looking for a great one.”
THE STOCKMAN | February 2022
At my age there isn’t much free time. I get a little slower each year. But visiting with the neighbors along the day is the most rewarding part of living in the country. It doesn’t get much better than helping your neighbor. And a trip to Green Bay to watch our favorite team is a yearly goal.”
