Greetings!
opening the gate.
This year, we’re opening the gate to something new here at The Stockman. I am humbled and excited to announce that I will be your new editor - maybe a little nervous and anxious, too - but nonetheless, I’m proud and fortunate to be part of this team! If you’re reading this, thank you for being here. We are going to charge on as normal, promoting and supporting you. I’d like to thank Bill for this privilege and opportunity. I’m thrilled to see where we’ll go with this magazine! A big thanks to my team - Cheryl, Kim, and Hilary - for working hard behind the scenes assisting me with editorials and graphics. I appreciate your work! Also, a big thank you to my husband, Jared, and our kiddos for supporting me with this adventure. As the New Year is upon us, I encourage you to embrace new opportunities and ideas, too. January is the beginning to a clean slate and a fresh start. Just like the young boy on the front cover as he’s standing at the gate and ready to open it - open your own gate when you get the chance these upcoming months! I’m looking forward to many great issues ahead. Happy New Year - cheers!

ust an hour east of Pierre, S.D., is a tiny town rife with remarkable cattle and cattlemen: Ree Heights, S.D. Settled in the Green Valley of the Ree Hills is Fawcett’s Elm Creek Ranch (FECR), a 14,000-acre dreamscape of the most beautiful country in the world. The hilly terrain, native grass, and spring-fed creeks filling stock dams make for excellent pasture. Keith Fawcett’s great-grandfather, John, homesteaded that piece of heaven over 110 years ago. From those humble beginnings, generations of Fawcetts have produced exceptional cattle and kids while remaining ardent stewards of the land.
TALE OF TWO HERDS Approximately 1,100 cows call FECR home. The operation consists mainly of registered Horned Herefords, with a small Angus herd maintained to produce seedstock to THE STOCKMAN | January 2022
meet the needs of commercial cattlemen. As many as 300 cows calve in February and March, while the balance calve in late March through May. The earlier-calving cows produce yearling bulls for the next February’s sale, while the later-calving cows produce two-year-old bulls to be sold. The older bulls are not left over from the previous year’s sale, but rather they are marketed specifically for their age-advantage. Intensive synchronization, AI, and embryo transfer have been a staple to help FECR propel in the right direction quickly. On average, over 1,000 head are bred AI annually.
CUSTOMER SUPPORT In addition to the registered herd, 250 commercial heifers are bred to merchandise each year. These cattle and their offspring 15

Additionally, the Fawcetts purchase as many calves as possible from their bull customers. Those calves enter the pens to be backgrounded with the top-end of the heifers bred and then sold as commercial bred heifers. Not only do the Fawcetts offer top Hereford bulls, but they are there to support their customers when it’s time to sell their calf crops.

Keith and his wife of 41 years, Cheryl, have four children: Daniel, Matt, Erin, and Kristin. Daniel and his wife, Kyla, chase two busy kids, Hollis and Ivy. Matt helps on the ranch every chance he gets. Erin and her husband, Adam Kaufmann, live in Seattle, Wash., and come back home for holidays and sale days to lend a hand. Kristin and her husband, Weston Kusser, are integral to the dayto-day operation of the ranch and built their home one mile from the original homestead site with their children, Falon and Jensen. The Fawcetts are not boastful people. Though they have enjoyed
much success in the show ring and through their production sales, they agree hanging banners is not a top priority. Ensuring their customers are profitable by providing the right genetics for their customers’ operations is of paramount importance. FECR bulls are bred for longevity; siring offspring with good udders, quiet dispositions, and easy fleshing ability to ensure each works long-term to produce profits for his new owner.
KEITH AND CHERYL’S ROLES Although many people know Keith and Daniel in association with FECR, the ranch would not run without the efforts of the rest of the family. Keith maintains the cow records, oversees the cowherd and heifers, manages the breeding, and does the farming. He also spends time in the fields “babysitting the corn,” as Daniel puts it. Cheryl takes care of the finances for each venture and keeps the trains running on time.
DANIEL AND KYLA’S CONTRIBUTIONS Daniel and Kyla have taken over the purebred operation management, making breeding decisions, acquiring herd bulls, and curating

the show heifer sales. Kyla owns Focus Marketing Group and uses her impressive skills for FECR’s publicity. Daniel hasn’t strayed far from the show ring, stepping in to judge shows from local jackpots to national competitions. Daniel says his true enjoyment is being able to interact with the youth at the shows.
Selling show heifers to juniors is one of the most stressful components of Daniel’s job. “It is extremely important that these females meet the demands of the industry in the show ring but, more importantly, be profitable momma cows after the show halter is taken off,” Daniel Fawcett explained. “It is of utmost importance
to me that our junior customers find exactly what they are after from our female sale.” One of Daniel’s greatest joys is cheering on his two children as they take their cattle into the show ring. “It’s been nothing short of incredible for me to watch them compete,”

________
“We want to be the source for the commercial producer to find the genetic needs of their cowherd to optimize their investments to the fullest. ” -Daniel Fawcett
Daniel shared. “There are so many good cattle and so many great families putting in the time that it’s extremely hard to win shows.” Daniel and Kyla have placed an emphasis on showmanship skills for their two young showmen. They believe forming a foundation of outstanding skill at the halter will prepare them to show at any level and exhibit any calf to look its best.
WESTON AND KRIS’ RESPONSIBILITIES Weston has tagged and processed nearly every calf the last few years, making keep or cull decisions for each cow at that time. In order to remain on the ranch cows must have excellent feet, leg, and udder structure. In addition, they must possess a docile disposition and mothering ability. Weston’s known to have a no-nonsense, unbiased opinion about the cattle, so he is ideally suited for this aspect of the operation. Additionally, he feeds the approximately 1,500 steers that are backgrounded after weaning. In addition to her career as a registered nurse, Kristin can be found working beside Weston whether in the calving pens, the tractor baling hay, or combine harvesting. Though the men at FECR hold many responsibilities, the women play an integral role in the ranch’s success as well. “We talk about the men on the ranch, but the women will stand with anyone of them,” Keith Fawcett said. This is apparent in their willingness to step into any situation with a helping hand. 18
January 2022 | THE STOCKMAN
DEDICATION TO YOUTH IN AGRICULTURE The entire Fawcett family was involved in 4-H, FFA, and junior Hereford associations in their youths and tout the benefits of these programs for young people. “These organizations give kids an undeniable advantage when compared to their peers in the long run by growing their work ethic, dedication, and passion towards whatever they may be doing,” Daniel said.
COMMITMENT TO THE BEEF INDUSTRY Keith served on the American Hereford Association’s board of directors as well as advisor of the South Dakota Jr. Hereford Association, along with Cheryl. Daniel was honored as the American Hereford Association’s Herdsman of the Year in 2014, and FECR was named Commercial Producer of the Year in 2010 and Seedstock Producer of the Year in 2017 by the South Dakota

Hereford Association. Although Keith acknowledges his pride in the many banners that hang in the show barn office and the hard work that went into earning them, he remains humble about the ranch’s success.
CUSTOMER SERVICE In an effort to increase efficiency for their customers, Daniel has been offering semen sales with certificate rights on the FECR website. All sales information is sent directly to the appropriate breed association and/or bull stud at the time of purchase. “We feel this has streamlined our customers’ processes and created a short turnaround time for them,” Daniel explained. FECR hosts a heifer sale each fall on the first Saturday of October with a mix of show heifer prospects, bred heifers, and donor cows. The second Monday in February brings bull sale day at the ranch where over 100 bulls, plus groups of replacement females are auctioned. Year-
ling bulls born early in the year and two-year-old bulls born in March or April are offered for optimal performance during their first breeding season. In addition to production sales at the ranch, the Fawcetts travel to regional winter shows and sales, plus the National Western Stock Show with their elite cattle.
THE FUTURE OF FECR Keith is excited for the future of FECR. The sixth generation is deeply involved in all aspects of the operation, and he sees nothing but growth and further improvements in the quality of the cattle. As a family, they continue to move the needle in a commonsense direction – take care of the land, use the best genetics available for the cattle, and ensure the seventh and eighth generations of Fawcetts are set up for success. “FECR is fortunate for the preceding generations forming a base so that each new generation can continue a progressive movement to make the ranch their own,” Keith
19
ECR Shameless
shared. “We are now reaching another transitional phase, and as hard as it is for this generation to let go, the next generation looks to be the best yet.” Keith’s role is transitioning to “advisor” as he adopts a “stand back” approach to allow the next generation to show off their skills and knowledge. “We want to be the source for the commercial producer to find the genetic needs of their cowherd to optimize their investments to the

fullest,” Daniel stated. “It’s our goal to continue to not get caught up in trends, but instead be the operation setting the trends with the right kind of cattle. The key to having the right kind is to not get caught up in short term trends, keep from chasing wild EPDs, and to keep focus on long-bodied cattle with added longevity.” Fawcett’s Elm Creek Ranch is certainly set up for future success. The sixth generation is engaged and gift-
ed, and the cattle continue to improve on their exceptional status with each new calf crop. One of Keith’s favorite sayings is, “The herd is no better than the worst cow.” FECR abides by that ensuring each female is an excellent representative of the Fawcett’s high standards. learn more fawcettselmcreekranch.com Fawcett’s Elm Creek Ranch Annual Production Sale will be held February 14, 2021 at the ranch near Ree Heights, SD.

Extension Education
University research you can use.
Steve Neimeyer, Nebraska Extension Educator Kacie McCarthy, UNL Cow-Calf Specialist www.beef.unl.edu
WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING REPLACEMENT HEIFERS R
eplacement heifers are one of the most important groups we can manage in the cowherd; therefore, managing our heifers from weaning to breeding will be a very important time for developing females that remain in the herd for years to come. Weaning can be a time to identify replacement heifer candidates that may potentially join the herd. This is a time that allows you to look back through your production records and start identifying traits that meet your
34
production goals, evaluating heifer age, and determining what your development strategies will be to ensure successful development of your heifers.
THINGS TO CONSIDER 1. Age 2. Genetics 3. Phenotype 4. Development Considerations
AGE Research has shown that heifers who calve in the first 21 days of the calving season had increased longevity compared to heifers calving in the two subsequent calving groups (8.2 vs. 7.6 vs. 7.2 years, respectively). These heifers produced calves that had significantly heavier weaning weights over their first six calves, resulting in weaning an extra calf over their lifetime. Therefore, focusing on developing
January 2022 | THE STOCKMAN
and selecting heifers that are bred earlier can provide an economic advantage for producers.
GENETICS
PHENOTYPE Heifers should be selected on structural soundness, be in good health and have good growth potential. Generally, evaluating your production records are helpful in determining growth potential and identifying the calves that are from above average producing cows.
DEVELOPMENT CONSIDERATIONS Traditional recommendations suggest heifers should be managed to attain 65% of their mature body weight at breeding to maximize pregnancy rate. However, multiple studies across differing environments have proven that heifers
developed at lighter target body weights (50 to 57%) at breeding reduced development costs while not impairing reproductive performance. Heifers in these systems are often developed in low-input, forage-based systems or on a reduced gain followed by a period of compensatory growth or increased gain in the period leading up to the breeding season. More considerations on heifer development and long-term impacts on profitability can be found in the past BeefWatch article Heifer Development and Long-term Profitability. Ultimately, heifers are future improvements to the cowherd and significant emphasis is placed on selection and development of heifers prior to the start of their first breeding season. Courtesy University of NE - Lincoln, UNL Beef
For further information regarding heifer development systems, see the Heifer Nutrition and Management page at beef.unl.edu.
CREATING THE FUTURE IN HEAT DETECTION!
When it comes to genetics, what are your production goals and how can you select traits to meet those goals. The genetic makeup of herds in the U.S. has changed significantly, and heifers are reaching puberty at younger ages and at a lower percentage of their mature body weight. Over time, we have also seen the trend of increasing mature cow weight for larger yearling weights. However, increasing cow weight has not delayed puberty, thus resulting in heifers being bred as yearlings and calving as 2-year old cows. Some other traits we can consider include milking ability, udder quality, calving ease and disposition. On the bull side, scrotal circumference moderately correlates with age at puberty in
heifers. As average scrotal size increases, age at puberty decreases in the heifer. Therefore, if we know information on our herd sires, then we can make more informed decisions based on data.

In the fall of 2019, after working for two decades in agricultural education and leadership, Steven Rogers was looking to change course. Ranchers from Texas to Minnesota and everywhere in between bring their bulls to the facility for semen collection, freezing, and storing. The company also helps customers who need to obtain photos and videos of their bulls for marketing campaigns. ShowMe Genetic Services collects from all different breeds of bulls. “Our versatility and ability to do that sets us apart a little bit,” Rogers explained. “Because of our climate, we can collect those eared cattle that maybe up North that are harder to winter. All the breeds that you can imagine have probably been through here in the last two years.”
ShowMe Genetic Services sells artificial insemination supplies, liquid nitrogen tanks, and liquid nitrogen to refill tanks. Additionally, the company offers embryo transfer (ET) work through a partnership with ReproLogix. Experts from ReproLogix schedule regular visits to the Rogers’ ranch, where they perform ET and other reproductive services for ShowMe Genetic Services customers.
KEYS TO SUCCESS A majority of the staff remained with the business when the Rogers family took over. The employees possess decades of experience in collecting bulls, freezing semen, and evaluating semen. The seasoned skills and talents of those employees have been one of the keys to the success of ShowMe Genetic Services. Since owning the facility, the Rogers have made many improvements. They updated lab equipment,
improved biosecurity measures, and renovated the office to make it more customer friendly. In addition, they made changes and additions in the barns to create a safer environment for employees, bulls, and customers.
EXPANDING SERVICES Currently, the company’s website is undergoing an overhaul. The new version will offer customers an option to use ShowMe Genetic Services’ website as a resource to market their semen. Other plans on the horizon include ShowMe Genetic Services strategy to grow its small ruminant collection side of the business. ShowMe Genetic Services dedicates time to being involved in the cattle industry. Whether its giving presentations at cattlemens’ meetings, sponsoring livestock events, or assisting at national junior cattle shows, the team is out promoting agriculture.
FAMILY ORIENTED Though most of the attention seems to fall on the business aspect of the company, the heart of it all centers around family. “It is very much a family business and very much a family-oriented business, in which, we try to make our staff all feel like they are part of the family,” Steven shared. Steven’s father-in-law and motherin-law, Jim and Jan Lile, helped the Rogers’ get the business started. The Rogers’ sons, Eli, age 12, and Ethan, age 10, pitch in at the business whenever they can. And when the Rogers newborn baby girl, Whitley Rae, gets old enough, she’ll be ready to lend a hand as well. learn more showmegen.com

Seeds in Season
Functional forage and pasture.
contributed article by Justin Fruechte, Forage & Cover Crop Specialist Millborn Seeds, Brookings, S.D. millbornseeds.com
ALTERNATIVE HIGH PROTEIN FORAGES W
inter feeding has started, and our on-farm forage supplies are being analyzed as we pull from haystacks. At this same time, we start to brainstorm ideas for spring planting realizing that low forage supplies need to be recuperated. Coupled with low forage inventories is the high cost of protein, so let’s look at all reasonable options to battle this conundrum. To write about alternative forages with high protein content, I need to first mention the queen of forages with high protein. Alfalfa is without a doubt, the most popular high protein forage used by producers across the country. It is adaptable,
high yielding, and consistent. Most all livestock producers should be using some level of alfalfa or alfalfa/grass in their operation for hay. If you live in the high-country desert, Sainfoin may be a more suitable option than alfalfa. Sainfoin is a long-lived, drought tolerant, hardy perennial legume. In a two-cut system it’s yield rivals alfalfa along with its protein content. Other benefits include being bloat free and resistance to alfalfa weevils and leaf hoppers. It tends to have more susceptibility to root pathogens and should not be used on low, wet soils. I’ve seen Sainfoin used best when seeded in a
mixture of perennial cool-season forage grasses. Forage peas will be a popular spring seeded forage utilized this year. It is best to use forage peas in combination with a cereal grain. To optimize protein content, use a blend of 60 percent forage peas with 40 percent forage barley. Look to plant this as soon as the field is fit this March/April and you’ll allow yourself an opportunity to double crop with a warm-season annual forage in June. Yield on pea/barley, pea/oat, or pea/triticale blends will be around 3-ton dry matter per acre. This makes for a hefty windrow to cure correctly, so most growers have a backup plan to make baleage or haylage from these fields. Harvesting as wet feed will also help ensure higher protein and more palatable feed. When June rolls around and you are searching for another high protein forage option, look to Teff Grass. Teff is an annual warm-season grass that has proven to make hay as high as 17 percent crude protein content. This small, seeded species needs to be seeded shallow into a firm seedbed, much like
60
January 2022 | THE STOCKMAN
you’d plant alfalfa into. Allow for 70 days before the first cutting, and with ample nitrogen and moisture you’ll have another cutting 25 days later. We’ve been extremely impressed with the quality of Teff grass and it can be used much like alfalfa hay in a diet without the risk of bloat. The last annual forage
that is high in protein to mention is Italian Ryegrass. This is a cool-season bi-annual grass with great persistence and quality. In the upper Midwest it should be seeded in the spring and harvested three to four times throughout the season. Expect a highly digestible feed with CP levels at 16 to 18 percent. Harvest it as wet feed as it has a waxy leaf which inhibits proper dry down for hay. Budget and plant out these options against your protein costs in rations. As fertilizer gets more expensive these nitrogen fixing legumes become even more appealing as a high protein forage option. Take the time this winter to lock in your inputs for spring planting and you’ll be ready to roll when we thaw back out.

Ingram Angus thrives with their strategies, moving them forward at a fast pace.
T
hough the old adage declares “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” one could argue the creation of Ingram Angus’ elite cattle herd comes pret-

ty close. In a year’s time, the registered Angus operation soared from a herd of none to a herd brimming with hundreds of select females.
Established in 2016, Ingram Angus is proving to be one of the fastest growing, premier purebred Angus operations in the country.
January 2022 | THE STOCKMAN
THE ORIGIN STORY A rock-solid partnership serves as the cornerstone for Ingram Angus. Owner Orrin Ingram, along with managing partners Jason Upchurch and David Cagle, collaborate on each aspect of Ingram Angus’ operations, located in the rolling hills of southern Tennessee. The partnership started to come together in 2015, when Orrin sought out Jason to help him procure herd sires for his Escape Ranch commercial herd, located in Kenansville, Fla. Orrin and Jason instantly connected over their shared passion for high phenotype, functional cattle. Orrin, an industrial businessman and breeder of champion Foxhounds and thoroughbreds, appreciated the combination of established bloodlines and performance improvements within the Angus breed. Shortly after working together to select Angus herd sires for Escape Ranch, Orrin reached out to Jason with an idea to build a purebred Angus operation in order to raise his own herd sires. “Now that I know Orrin, I realize that a small idea doesn’t stay a small idea very long,” Jason Upchurch explained. “Those ideas turned to reality really quick.” The small idea grew bigger and faster than they originally anticipated. In February of 2016, David Cagle joined as a third partner and they started to work. David handles the day-to-day operations and the group works together on the big decisions like breeding and sale selections. Ingram Angus operates on 1,800 acres in Pulaski, Tenn., and 1,100 acres in Wartrace, Tenn. The ranch flushes 35 donor cows, manages 1,000 cows, and develops more than 300 bulls each year.

THE FOUNDATION The trifecta of cattlemen is building Ingram Angus with a foundation of proven Angus cow families. Jason and David travel the country seeking to purchase females that are the perfect fit for the program. “At Ingram Angus, from day one we built our herd around cow families that have stood the test of time,” Jason shared. The utilization of well-established cow families gives Ingram Angus confidence. The donor cows at Ingram Angus have lengthy
histories and known genetics. This helps to minimize problems or surprises. The herd at Ingram Angus is centered around highly-productive females that are close descendants to the highest-ranking cow in a highly-productive cow family. Some of the females are bred more maternal and others are bred more for growth and numbers. Ingram Angus strives for an excellent phenotype to reign as the the common denominator among all its cattle. This doesn’t necessarily mean a show ring phenotype, but

rather an animal that demonstrates real-world functionality and profitability. The cattle at Ingram Angus must possess strong maternal traits. “We strive to produce cattle that are functional no matter how their pedigree reads,” Jason stated. “Our belief is if we can’t make them work in our environment, then they won’t work for our customers either,” he added.
THE BREEDING PROGRAM Ingram Angus capitalizes on an extensive amount of embryo transfer to develop the herd. “We have built our entire program around key individual cows,” Jason explained. The donor cows are selected and purchased private treaty and at sales from top herds across the country. Ingram Angus primarily uses registered Angus females as recipients. Everything on the ranch gets AI bred with a planned mating. Additionally, in many cases, Ingram Angus uses timed breeding protocols on their virgin heifer groups. Ranch managers also detect heat on many of the mature cow groups.
LOTS OF BULL Though much of the focus at Ingram Angus is on females, the operation also places emphasis on producing herd sires that will make a mark in the cattle industry. Through the years Ingram Angus has purchased or produced many on the top Angus bulls in the country. A few of the herd sires in Ingram Angus’ arsenal include S A V Extension 6856, S A V 654X Rainmaster 6849, S A V Reign 6845, Ingram Charcoal 7001, S A V Renew 8132, Ingram Outlaw 9222, Ingram Verdict 0674, Ingram Intensity 0030,

Ingram John Dutton 0691, and Ingram Allegiance 0668. These herd sires all stem from powerful, well-known dams and each bring their own unique genetic merit and qualities to the cattle industry. In addition to these herd sires, Ingram Angus produces and develops hundreds of Angus bulls each year for its customers.
THE FEEDING PROGRAM All the cattle at Ingram Angus receive a high roughage diet. The ranch produces massive amounts of haylage and formulates a diet around winter annuals in order to create a forage-based diet for the herd. Bulls are developed slowly on these food sources to ensure they are built for the harshest environment and will hold up for Ingram Angus’ customers.
as replacements. But as the herd has grown, so has the operation’s ability to market its cattle. Ingram Angus hosts three sales a year at its sale facility in Lynnville, Tenn. “We strive to include the highest quality for each of these sales,” Jason stated. Ingram Angus’ fall sale, held the second Friday in November each year, typically offers approximately 100 females and 60 bulls. In March, Ingram Angus will host an online show prospect heifer sale called, “Beyond the Banners.” This sale will feature 15 Angus show heifer prospects. The third sale takes place on the second Friday in April, this is Ingram Angus’ production sale. The production sale, scheduled for April 8, 2022, will offer 60 elite females and 30 age advantage bulls.

Growing so much, so fast can present many challenges. But Ingram Angus balances the diffi-
culties by relying on experience. “At times this business gets a lot of hype and momentum in a direction of breeding goals and most of the time breeders take it to an extreme,” Jason said. The partners at Ingram Angus refuse to ride the waves and trends in the cattle industry. Instead, they stand firm in their philosophy of breeding cattle that will work for their operation and for their customers now and in the future. “Being able to breed cattle that are functional, predictable, and marketable is a hard task at times,” Jason shared. “But dedication with some determination helps keep us on track to produce the exact type of cattle our philosophy has outlined our program to become.” Ingram Angus is off to the races with its cattle operation. The partners say they plan to keep moving on their current course. “We are blessed to have come a very long way in a very short period of time,” Jason concluded. learn more ingramangus.com

LEPTOSPIRA HARDJO-BOVIS IN CATTLE M
any things will affect pregnancy rates in cattle and usually it is caused by some environmental factor such as heat stress or diets that do not provide enough energy. But there is one disease that will greatly affect fertility, and that is Leptospira. Usually, we think of Leptospira as causing abortions after four months of gestation through the remaining term of the pregnancy. Most of these later term abortions are caused by L. canicola, L. grippotyphosa, L. icterohaemorrhagiae, and L. Pomona. In our experience, they are not very common in cases of abortion and most cows get an annual L5 vaccination. The strain that concerns us the most is Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar hardjo-bovis. Cattle are the primary host for hardjo-bovis and it causes disease symptoms that are much more varied and have more long-term effects.
84
Many infectious agents can affect fertility in cattle, but in my opinion infections with L. hardjo-bovis are some of the most devastating we’ve encountered. Various symptoms will be presented such as: 1) The re-absorption or abortion of the fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy. If you see a large number of pregnancies lost at 60 to 90 days after being diagnosed pregnant at 30 days, you should consider L. hardjo-bovis as a possible cause. 2) The other symptom you will see is infertility and repeat breeders in cows that have been infected. When they cycle back, they will maintain a 21 day cycle. This is also encountered in cows that have aborted in the first trimester of pregnancy, but have a hard time breeding back.
3) Septicemia with Leptospira hardjo-bovis. This will occur after the initial infection and can last for 21 to 30 days before it subsides. Often this will be asymptomatic or just have minimal symptoms that go unnoticed. 4) Kidney or uterine infections. These organs are the natural place for Lepto to settle into after a case of septicemia. Kidney infections can present with blood in the urine. Uterine infections will go on to lead to infertility issues and can also be shed in the semen of infected bulls. 5) A persistent carrier state in cattle occurs because they are the primary host for hardjo-bovis. Antibodies do not reach the kidneys or uterus (testes) well enough to clear the infection, so the animal will be in a carrier state. Transmission from an infected animal is predominately from their urine. Leptospira from urine can infect another animal through penetration of mucous membranes or even penetrate through the skin. Wet rainy conditions are ideal to help spread Leptospira. Infected animals will contaminate bedding when they urinate and spread to
January 2022 | THE STOCKMAN
other cattle when they lay in it. Also, mud puddles will be contaminated from urine and promote the spread when other cattle nose around in the puddles. Hardjo-bovis was originally more prevalent in the southern states, but has spread north with cattle movement and become more common to see in any region of the United States. Diagnosis is fairly difficult since cattle don’t always develop high antibodies to hardjo-bovis. This can make it harder to diagnose with serology. The ideal diagnosis would be from culturing urine, but that can be challenging to collect. Aborted fetuses from the first trimester are rarely recovered, but should be submitted for diagnostics if found. Often diagnosis is based off of clinical signs if diagnostics are limited or inconclusive. What makes this disease difficult to deal with is the carrier state that infected cattle enter into. The most important point in this article is this: You Cannot Vaccinate Cattle Out of the Carrier State! If your cattle are diagnosed with hardjo-bovis, you cannot solve the problem with vaccination only. Antibodies do not reach the kidneys
THE STOCKMAN | January 2022
or uterus in high enough levels to clear infection and this is how the carrier state starts. Leptospira is fairly sensitive to tetracyclines and something as simple as an injection of LA200 or LA300 can clear the infection from the carrier animal. So, if you do clear the infection from a carrier animal with tetracycline, they will still be susceptible to reinfection if re-exposed in the future. A strategy to gain control of infection in the herd must include an antibiotic to clear the carrier state and at the same time administration of a vaccine to prevent re-infection. In cases where we have dealt with hardjo-bovis, we have given all cattle in the herd an injection of LA200 and vaccinated with Spirovac. We will follow up in two to three weeks with a booster of Spirovac. In my experience, most of the cattle treated will regain normal fertility with this protocol. If your herd does not have any symptoms of hardjo-bovis, we do not recommend mass treatment with an antibiotic; but, we will still recommend vaccination annually for hardjo-bovis.
It was probably 25 years ago that hardjo-bovis began to emerge as a disease that was starting to spread throughout the United States. At the time, due to the difficulties in producing immunity with current vaccines, one of the major vaccine companies did a worldwide search to find a vaccine that would be effective in preventing infection with hardjo-bovis. They came up with two products, Lepto Boy out of France and Spirovac out of New Zealand. In New Zealand, Spirovac was actually a regulatory vaccine because of the zoonotic problems they were having with workers becoming infected in the dairy herds. Due to the effectiveness of the product, it was brought to the United States to include in their product lineup. Since that time other companies have also introduced hardjo-bovis into their reproductive vaccines, thus expanding options to cattlemen for hardjo-bovis vaccine. learn more collisonembryo.com Dr. Vince Collison is co-owner of Collison Embryo | Collison Veterinary Services PAC in Rockwell City, Iowa.

Where did you learn to cook?
“
My mom and my boss taught me how to cook. I worked alongside my mom in a care facility all throughout high school. I was co-head cook by age 16 alongside my mom. My boss cooked for farmhands and would have ingenious ways to stretch things out that I still use today. I have always loved to take a recipe and make it my own. I never can actually follow a recipe all the way through.
What is your most requested dish?
“
”
Chicken Fried Steak! Everyone will stop whatever they are doing to make it in on time (which usually never happens) just to eat chicken fried steak. It isn’t my most favorite thing to make because of the cleanup, but I will make it at least once a month.
What is your favorite cooking tip/trick?
“ In the kitchen with
When in doubt put a roast in a slow cooker the night before. You can stretch a roast so many different ways. You can feed a small number or a large number of people if need be. Or if you are busy and are out working cattle and can’t be inside, you can add potatoes and carrots before you head out and dinner will be ready when you come in. Here is another cooking tip. We have our locker make part of the ground beef into breakfast sausage. This is 100 percent beef! So the next time you take your beef to the locker ask them to make 20 pounds of the ground beef into breakfast sausage. I get many raves about our delicious beef sausage!

I usually have more people to feed than my table holds. So that means I am setting up extra chairs and tables and then taking them down again. I would pay someone to set them up and take them down because it’s usually a guessing game on how many extra people I will have.

I didn’t grow up on a farm; I grew up in Lenox, Iowa, which is about 20 miles west of Diagonal. When Joe first introduced me to the family (which was after about a year of dating) I just fell in love with the cattle and country living! We raise registered Angus cattle and sell 150 bulls each year at private treaty. Joe and I have four little ones. Ty is 9, Jake is 8, Emma is 6, and Brook is 5. We also have, Lois (Joe’s grandma), who just turned 100 living with us, who is under my care. This house is definitely chaotic 99.9 percent of the time! My job for Werner Family Angus is to cook for everyone and anyone who wants to eat lunch that day.

Some days I just have a few hands and some days I can have 20 some people to feed. When we have tours, my job is to plan and feed everyone. I love the days they are shorthanded and call me out to work cattle. This is my favorite job, but that’s maybe because I don’t get to do it every day!

Woolover® Limited
Fit N Forget (FnF™) Beef Calf Cover
Fitting the FnF™ Beef Calf Cover to a new-born increased the actual hide temperature of the calf by 32 degrees Fahrenheit in just four minutes! All beef ranchers are seeking to maximize their returns from their operation. A main income generator is the number of live calves that make weaning. The weather during late winter and spring can, and does, influence the number of newborn beef calves that survive some very brutal weather that can literally devastate the very survival of these new-borns. Woolover® Ltd, based in New Zealand, is no stranger to devastating stock losses. In fact, Woolover® Ltd was “born of necessity” back in 1993 after two snowstorms, 10 days apart, claimed the lives of 2 million lambs and 40,000 calves. The answer is WOOL - Working 24/7. MWI Animal Health, based in Boise, Idaho, and Kim Holt, drew our attention to USDA figures that suggested towards 80,000 new-born beef calves perish annually from hypothermia. Woolover® Ltd then set about designing and making a beef calf cover that was totally biodegradable, made from wool, is designed to fit an 85 lb new-born beef calf, and would simply “fall off” after 3- 4 weeks having ensured the new-born beef calf survived, was accepted by the mother, and captured some additional growth rates along the way. The Result: The Woolover® Fit N Forget (FnF™) Beef Calf Cover. • New-born calves fitted with the FnF™ Beef Calf Cover are simply not at risk of dying from hypothermia, and they will grow faster. • The cover is totally biodegradable with wool providing the warmth and absorbency to wick moisture away from the hide and the Hessian Substrate providing some strength. Be it rain, snow, windchill or, simply from the birth process, covering a new-born beef calf with the FnF™ Beef Calf Cover makes sound financial sense. The cover will last for up to 3 – 4 weeks and then falls off. • Designed for an 85 lb. live weight beef calf at birth, which is the optimum weight, but will also fit smaller calves. • Wool is providing the warmth, is absorbent, breathable, comfortable to wear, is totally biodegradable and will ensure the Thermo – Neutral Zone, being the heart/ lung area, is kept at a constant temperature, both day and night despite the worst possible conditions = survival. Dr. Clint Hilt, leading Veterinarian with MWI Animal Health, based in Power, Montana, who assisted with a trial of 50 FnF™ Beef Calf Covers on his clients’ newborn calves said, “THESE COVERS ARE LIVESAVERS.” The trial was conducted on a day when it was -23 degrees Fahrenheit and, by simply fitting a FnF™ Beef Calf Cover to a new-born, the actual hide temperature of the calf increased by 32 degrees Fahrenheit in four minutes! The Woolover® Limited FnF™ Beef Calf Covers: ORDER ONLINE at www.wooloverdirect.com or phone: Busse Barron Acres [ BBA ] 715 296 7596. FnF™ Beef Calf Covers are sold in units of 100 or packages of 10.

A review of the current cattle market.
contributed article by Kirk Lynch Lynch Livestock Inc. and Humeston Livestock Exchange, Humeston, Iowa humestonlivestockexchange.com
COLD WEATHER BUT HOT CATTLE MARKET A
s I wrote this article, we have received our first snowstorm of the winter and my four little ones could not wait to throw on their snow pants and go play in the white stuff! Me on the other hand, not so excited about leaving the warmth and comfort of my office. It is because they are looking forward to joy and fun and I am dreading frozen waters and/or sick cattle. Either way, it is safe to say that winter is upon us! Now to look at some of the market reports that we have been seeing in the barns. The fat cattle market has been on a hot streak for several weeks, until this past week, when we experienced a slight dip in the market. We have seen some highs in the mid to high forties, but these have been some extremes. Most cash cattle in the country have been trading at forty level or slightly higher the past couple of weeks. I expect there to be a few bumps in the road, but I expect
this fat cattle deal to continue an upward trend going into the new year and into spring. How high we can go, that is the million-dollar question! The higher fat cattle market is driving a higher price for the feeder cattle market as well, even with the higher feedstuff inputs. We have seen some front end big strings of 800 pounds bringing well into the sixties and some 600-pound cattle bringing into the seventies and eighties. Once again these are some extreme tops. We have been trying to fill up our own lots as fast as possible, as I am not sure the feeder cattle are going to get any cheaper. We have been able to find cattle at cheaper prices than that and so when we do projects they are in the black. The cull cow and bull market has lagged the fat market, as from all reports there have been around six

percent more cows slaughtered than last year, making for a fairly good supply of cows. Once this slows down, which will more than likely be into next year, look for the feed cow and bull market to take off with the same fire as the fat cattle market. The breeding stock market has been up and down as well. Recently, I heard of some 3-year-old commercial pairs bringing the high $2,000 and then I look around and can buy all the running age cows I want for $1,200 to $1,500. If you are looking to expand, I think now is the time to buy some of the reasonably priced cows, as I think with increased cow slaughter we are going to be in a short cattle supply over the next couple of years. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

traight What about the beef cattle industry excites you the most? About the Stockman. Twedt Red Angus is a family-owned operation that was established in 2009 when I purchased the entire herd of Bar R Red Angus. Twedt Red Angus consists today of my wife, Emily, and our four kids, Nora (9), Brynn (8), Wyatt (5), and Eden (2). I grew up raising commercial cattle with my Dad. My Dad and I still ranch together today and he runs about 450 commercial cows.”
The beef industry excites me because of the people that are involved in it. You won’t find an industry that compares to the honest, hardworking people that are involved in the beef industry. We are like one big family. We all work very hard in this business and we all just want a fair price for our product. ”
The most important lesson you’ve learned in this business? Treat your customers as you would want to be treated. Treat them with honesty and respect. ”

Most used tool on your farm and how old is it? The most important tool or I guess piece of machinery in this case, would have to be the front wheel assist tractor. It’s hard to imagine life without it now. I don’t know how previous generations got around in the mud and snow without it.”
Describe your best/worst day. The best day on the ranch is a beautiful summer day and you’re out checking cows in the evening. The sun is going down and it’s just peaceful out. There is nothing better than that.”

A conversation with everyday Stockmen,
Samuel Twedt Twedt Red Angus - McHenry, North Dakota
Which animal (any species) has left the greatest impact on you? The Red Angus momma cow. ”
Your favorite non-farm activity to do in your free time? My favorite non-farm activity would be fishing or hunting. Catching a live well full of walleyes with family and friends is tough to beat. ”
THE STOCKMAN | January 2022
What is your least favorite job on the farm? My least favorite job is feeding cows in May. Feeding cows is not bad at the beginning of winter, but by May I am ready to be done. The cows just need to go to grass. ”
Your go-to sorting apparatus? I would have to choose the rattle paddle.”
