memories.

Bull sale season is just around the corner, which means we, like so many others, are gearing up for photos in the picture pen. It can be quite a daunting task for our family - we are usually short on help and long on attitude from everyone’s lack of patience (if you know what I mean!). Now our kids are getting older, and they are learning to hang in there and do a better job of ‘getting the ears.’ Jared and I planned to start pictures on a weekday - the kids had caught wind of that and thought that the picture pen would be an excellent reason to skip school and help out. With 20 minutes left to make a decision that school morning, I had flashbacks to years past when things were not so pleasant and had already decided, ‘Nope, not doing that today.’ Anyone with kids knows that they don’t take ‘No’ for an answer, so I reconsidered under one stipulation: each kid had to give us a demonstration in the living room of what they were going to do in the picture pen to ‘get the ears,’ and oh my - the laughs were just what we needed to get a good start to the day. With that I obliged, and the kids grabbed their peanut butter toast and ran for the picture pen to start bedding. Hard work never did anybody wrong, and these memories will last them a lifetime. We are also on the brink of a new year! New goals, hopes, and dreams all fill our minds. The Stockman staff looks forward to bringing you fresh, unique, and relevant content and services in 2024. Go and make memories in the weeks and months ahead. Wishing you a healthy and prosperous New Year!

thinking of the box Cannon Valley Ranch expands its business offerings to ensure stability for the future. By Cheryl Kepes photos courtesy Waugh Family

t

he journey to success many times requires a hefty dose of patience. The owners of Cannon Valley Ranch, Bruce, LeeAnn, and Taylor Waugh know well the lessons and opportunities gleaned over time. “Someone told us when we first started in the Angus business that an overnight success in the Angus business was at least 15 years,” LeeAnn Waugh shared. “It does take a lot of time to build that reputation and for people to try your genetics.” Throughout the past several decades the Waugh family has built a successful Angus seedstock business in Goodhue, Minn. In recent years, Cannon Valley Ranch added direct beef sales to its operation, marketing Angus and Akaushi (a specific breed of Wagyu) beef straight 20

from the ranch to consumers. “This expansion and diversification grew as a direct result of both our sons’ desire to be involved. And fueled by Taylor’s decision to come back to the ranch after college to make ranching and raising cattle his future,” LeeAnn said. Cannon Valley Ranch’s premium beef business provides the Waughs a platform to showcase the overall quality of the end product of their herd’s genetics. Additionally, the new branch of their business generates income and creates sustainability for their operation. January 2024 | THE STOCKMAN

They launched their direct beef business, Cannon Valley Ranch Premium Beef, to meet the need and it’s been growing ever since. Cannon Valley Ranch’s proximity to large cities helped to position the beef business for success. “We are right in the middle of the metro area (Minneapolis-St. Paul) and Rochester and have a lot of hungry mouths available to us,” Bruce said. Though their direct meat sales business started due to opportunity, it was also born out of necessity. “We really see this as a way of sustainability that we need to have the meat business or it is just going to be too hard to make a big enough income to live off of if we don’t branch off and do something different,” Bruce shared.

RANCH ROOTS Bruce and LeeAnn started their cattle operation shortly after they were married 39 years ago. In the beginning, their herd consisted of commercial cattle. Then 24 years ago they made the transition to a registered Angus herd. “We are first generation ranchers. We both grew up on farms, but this isn’t a family legacy that we have taken over, everything that we have we bought on our own,” Bruce Waugh said. 22

The operation consists of 120 registered Angus cows that graze the rolling hills of Cannon Valley Ranch located approximately 45 minutes south of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area and 25 miles north of Rochester. The Waughs utilize AI and embryo transfer to accelerate the genetic quality of their herd. “We focus on balanced EPDs, we don’t chase anything too far. We do pay a little more attention to the carcass side of the equation since we have our meat business,” Bruce explained.

Animals that fall short of the Waughs’ standards for their registered Angus operation are fed out for the freezer beef program. However, since many of Cannon Valley Ranch’s cattle are sold as seedstock, the Waughs also buy their customers’ cattle to utilize in their direct beef operation. “We have some really longtime customers who have been using our breeding stock for 20 years. So, their herd is almost a commercial version of our herd. We purchase back cattle from them and our genetic partners, along with our bottom end steer calves and heifer calves, they get fed out too,” Bruce explained.

OPEN DOORS Family and friend connections contributed to marketing opportunities for Cannon Valley Ranch Premium Beef. The Waughs’ son, Aaron, works for Forager Brewery in Rochester. The restaurant was one of the Waughs’ first customers. Forager Brewery features Cannon Valley Ranch beef in some of its signature dishes including a popular menu item, Cannon Valley Stroganoff. The Waughs’ other son, Taylor, who works as a meat cutter, plays a significant role in the operation. His expertise on carcass cuts and quality control serves as a valuable asset to the ranch to table aspect of the business. Other extended family members who work as meat scientists helped guide Bruce and LeeAnn in the areas of carcass utilization and pricing individual cuts of meat.

Thanks to the assistance of an acquaintance, the Waughs secured a spot in a large farmers market in Rochester. Selling their product in the farmers market helps them to build their brand and grow their customer base.

The Waughs completed a substantial amount of embryo work for the Akaushi producer, and the result was three cattle operations sharing the embryos. The Waughs continue to work with the Akaushi producer on other genetic partnerships.

A bonus of marketing their product at the farmers market is the interaction with consumers. “People just love when we talk about our story at the farmers market, they really appreciate the hard work that we put in and I think the consumer really wants to connect with their food,” Bruce shared.

The Akaushi comprises a portion of the direct beef offerings with the majority of the products being high-quality Angus Beef. “It’s been

a nice complement to the Angus, and it has opened a few doors for us that maybe would have been harder for us to crack open otherwise,” Bruce said. “We focus on the Angus and then the Akaushi is a higher value brand ladder or higher value product that we also focus on.” The Akaushi products sell at a higher price point compared to the Angus products.

AKAUSHI BEEF One of the goals of Cannon Valley Ranch’s premium beef operation is to offer unique and diverse products for consumers. It processes about 80 animals a year at USDA inspected facilities. Some of the animals processed are Akaushi, a breed of Wagyu that’s known for its tenderness and intense marbling. The entry into raising Akaushi cattle developed through a work relationship with an Akaushi breeder. 24

UNIQUE OFFERINGS The Waughs have expanded their product line to include cuts and products that are different and unique. Cannon Valley Ranch Premium Beef’s offerings consists of typical cuts as well as Flat Iron, Denver, Bavette, and Picanha to name a few. Other items include hot dogs, beef and cheddar sticks, jerky, even wild bird suet. As they expanded their business, Bruce, LeeAnn, Taylor, and Aaron discovered a demand for ready to eat beef. The Waughs added to their offerings “heat and eat” products such as seasoned taco beef, smoked meatballs, and Sloppy Joe beef.

CONSERVATION PRACTICES The ranch operates with conservation strategies at its core. Cannon Valley Ranch focuses on rotational grazing, soil health, and regenerative ag practices. The Waughs follow the regulations of the Clean Water and Land Legacy Amendment. Additionally, the operation earned the designation of a Minnesota Water Quality Certified Farm through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

The Waughs believe their love and care for their land and cattle hold importance and value with their customers. During the ranch’s fall Angus production sale, the family hosted an open house to showcase their sale offerings as well as their direct beef business. The event gave cattle customers and beef consumers the opportunity to see all aspects of Cannon Valley Ranch’s operation. Seedstock producers attending to view sale cattle saw firsthand the end product of some of Cannon Valley Ranch’s genetics as well as met the consum-

ers buying beef products. “People could see, Wow, these guys have a great following with their end product too! People love it and think it is unique and it is special,” LeeAnn said. The success and positive feedback from customers continue to fuel the Waughs and their goals to grow their operation. Bruce, LeeAnn, and family are working on additional ideas to expand their operation in the future. learn more cannonvalleyranch.com/our-beef

COW HERD REPORT CARD: POST-PARTUM Measures of performance for post-partum interval and pregnancy rates.

I

n this article, let’s talk about ways to positively impact post-partum interval (PPI) and pregnancy rates. Consider the following criteria for an efficient beef cow herd: » Calving interval (number of days between calves) is 365 days or less. » Females raise a calf to weaning. » Cow mature weight and milk production fit the resources and need little to no extra feed or supplements. If the calving interval is 365 days or less, a cow or heifer must be rebred and be pregnant by about 80 to 85 days after calving (gestation is 280 to 285 days). To make this happen, understand the factors that impact the post-partum interval length. The post-partum interval (PPI) is the time from calving until the cow resumes a fertile estrous cycle. After calving, cows will enter post-partum anestrus. Anestrus means cows are not exhibiting normal estrous cycles and cannot become pregnant. Under “ideal” conditions, the anestrus lasts 40 to 60 days in beef females. During this time, uterine involution (the uterus returns to normal size) occurs and

38

she prepares herself for the next pregnancy. If conditions are not ideal, PPI can last 100 days or more. WHAT FACTORS IMPACT THE POST-PARTUM INTERVAL? » Cow age – 2 and 3-year-old females have longer PPI. » Body condition at calving – thin cows, BCS 4 and less have longer PPI. » Calving difficulty – dystocia lengthens PPI. Because first-calf heifers have a longer PPI, they should be bred to calve their first calf ahead of the mature cow herd. The focus is to breed heifers to calve ahead of the cows and to breed heifers to calving ease bulls. Calves in first-calf heifers will be in gestation fewer days when bred to calving ease bulls. Remember, even with ideal management for reproductive performance, first-calf heifers will have a longer PPI, so they need extra time post-calving to get ready reproductively to become pregnant with their second calf. To manage PPI, feed cows to calve in BCS of 5, and first-calf-fe-

males to calve in BCS of 6. Depending on feeds available, first-calvers will likely require some supplementation to get to BCS 6 prior to calving. For the mature (3-years-old and older) cows, if they can be in BCS 5 before calving with little to no supplementation that would indicate milk production and mature weight fit the feed/forage resources. If replacement heifers are selected from within the herd and mature cows must continually be fed extra feeds and supplements to get them to ideal body condition before calving, then reevaluate your breeding program. It may indicate mature cow weight is increasing, milk production is increasing, or both are increasing at the same time. There is a belief that reducing dietary energy during late pregnancy will decrease fetal size and result in improved calving ease. Underfeeding energy does not decrease calving difficulty. Underfeeding beef females will increase the length of the PPI, especially underfeeding young beef females. Some research shows reproductive performance of cows calving in a 4, 5, or 6 BCS is not different

January 2024 | THE STOCKMAN

(Mulliniks et al., (2012) J. Anim. Sci. 90:2811-2817). This may suggest cows adapt to their production environment with acceptable reproductive performance of cows at a lower body condition, but it may take years of selection to get there. Spring-calving cows that calve in a BCS of 4 can have high reproductive performance if the weather cooperates from calving to the start of the breeding season and energy is not limited post-calving. There is also data that females that calve in low body condition (BCS 4 or less) have calves with a lower amount of immunoglobulin in the blood stream 24 hours after birth and are slower to stand and suckle compared to calves born to females in BCS 5 to 6 at calving. The question is how risk adverse of a producer are you? Data also says late spring/early summer calving cows can calve in lower body condition and have good reproductive performance. Regarding body condition, it is hard to play catch up, especially after calving, if there is a need to increase body condition. Consider always calving first-calf females in a BCS of 6.

A question becomes - what is an acceptable reproductive rate? This number differs based on the operation. Based on some old Standardized Performance Analysis and CHAPS data, if percent calves weaned per females exposed to the bull during the breeding season is in the 87 to 92% range, the cow enterprise has a good chance to be economical. The greatest costs for the cowcalf enterprise are feed costs. Again, any time cows can reproduce at an acceptable rate with little to no extra feeds or supplements means that mature weight and milk production fit the forage/feed resources of the operation. If growth is the selection criteria and heifers are retained, cow mature weight will increase. It is probably worth mentioning, milk EPD is pounds of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability of the

dam. Increasing weaning weight by increasing milk also increases the cow’s nutrient needs, and not only during lactation. Higher-milking cows also have greater visceral organ weight. Even when not lactating these organs increase the cow’s nutrient needs. Focus on management strategies to economically improve reproductive performance of the herd. This will have greater impact on the financial status of the cow-calf enterprise than most other management strategies. In addition, the management strategies discussed will have a positive impact on weaning weight. Courtesy University of NE - Lincoln, UNL Beef

Interviews with the authors of BeefWatch newsletter articles become available throughout the month of publication and are accessible at: www.go.unl.edu/podcast.

Studies have consistently shown that, by far, the greatest factor impacting calving difficulty in beef females is the birth weight of the calf. Next in line is sex of the calf. Male calves have heavier birth weights compared to female calves because the gestation length of male calves is longer. Also, age of dam impacts calving difficulty. First-calf females have a greater incidence of dystocia. Pelvic area, gestation length, and cow weight had much, much less influence on calving difficulty. For first-calf females, breed them to bulls where the focus is on reducing calving difficulty (Birth Weight, Calving Ease Direct, and Calving Ease Maternal EPDs). THE STOCKMAN | January 2024

Genetic Evaluation What is Promogen Genetic Evaluation?

Why is Promogen important?

How does Promogen equate to profitability?

Promogen™ genetic evaluation is not just another method for establishing genomic probabilities. The purpose of the test is to identify and quantify, using a simple numerical scoring system, the presence of three key proteins that medical science has labeled collectively as “Defensins.” A twenty-year research project involving several universities in the United States and Europe has proven that physiologic performance, whether it is measured as disease resistance, fertility, productivity, or athletic ability, are directly related to the concentration of these proteins in the body. • Provides a “road map” for developing management strategies that maximize herd profitability. • Helps you identify animals who are most likely naturally inclined to herd longevity, reproductive efficiency, and naturally able to maximize environment and express Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) to the best of their ability. • Early identification of animals that may prove to incur more input costs than their counterparts. How does PROMOGEN EQUATE TO PROFITABILITY? Genetic progress in beef cattle comes with challenges. The major issue is industry segmentation. Utilizing the Promogen™ assay can add value throughout the production cycle. The ideal cow for a cow/ calf operation is one that successfully weans a feedlot-ready calf at six to seven months of age and does so with minimum added expense associated with feed supplementation, medication, and labor. At the same time, that cow is expected to breed back within 40 to 90 days post-calving to repeat the cycle; she is expected to do this year after year. Promogen™ assays will predict value-added cows that will raise healthy calves. Then there is the challenge of sire selection. Current EPDs, even when supported by genomics testing, can become little more than a good guess with so many traits being selected simultaneously. Promogen™ testing accurately identifies bulls who are more feed efficient, more disease resistant, more fertile and appear to be able to pass the ability to produce high levels of Defensins and their associated proteins to their offspring.

Scoring Promogen scores available on all sale animals 1. The system uses a numerical score of 1 to 6.5. 2. Animals with scores of less than 4 are not producing the three marker proteins we are measuring at physiologically effective levels. 3. Animals scoring between 4 to 4.5 are producing the three marker proteins at levels that are physiologically average. 4. Animals scoring between 4.5 to 5.0 are in the Top 15% of the tested population. 5. Animals scoring between 5.0 to 5.5 are within the Top 10%. 6. Animals scoring between 5.5 to 6.0 are within the Top 5%. 7. The outliers lie within the range of 6.0 to 6.5, and find themselves within the Top 1% of the tested population. • Immunologically superior animals are proven to return higher significant gains across all traits: overall wellness, fertility, and feed efficiency. • Profits on overall wellness are realized through an increased response to vaccines and antiparasitic treatments, drastically reducing the incidence of morbidity and antibiotic use. • Fertility is reflected in higher conception rates, reduced risk in early embryonic death, weaning calves at higher weight ratios, and overall retention and longevity in replacement females. • Feed efficiency is directly affected by the body’s ability to ward off inflammation due to environmental stress factors. • Cattle on feed who possess this natural ability have higher conversion rates than their counterparts who are immunologically inferior – all without commanding additional medicine costs and higher overall expenses. • Immunologically superior animals who possess specific Defensin predictive biomarkers are proven to be more profitable and aide in economic gains through these highly heritable traits for generations to follow. •

Choose immunologically superior animals through Promogen Genetic Evaluation. Choose genetic gold.

100 YEARLING BULLS

• 32 years of carcass traits, ultrasounding since 1993 • Calving ease • Performance • Disposition • Uniform, thick and easy-fleshing • Priced from $3,800, $4,000 and $4,200 Heifers will be offered private treaty in the fall as bred heifers.

Loonan Genetics –

Impacting profitable bottom lines for generations!

We appreciate young cattlemen like James Johannes and his family. He came to us in 2007 – while still in high school – looking for a bull. It was July and we still had a Firefly Red Angus bull available, and he and his dad bought him. Here we are, years later, and James has gone from buying our last bull available to coming opening day. He studies over all the figures and is buying a bull from the top of the bull crop. His wife, Allison, works at one of our local banks as a credit analyst, so the Johannes family knows what their bottom line is. They know what to look for to get the most for their money from pounds to sell at the sale barn to keeping top replacement heifers. James has studied his genetics and has had years of outstanding calves with thickness, gainability and eye appeal. In fact, he recently sold 900-lb. heifers for $2,100.

James & Allison Johannes Jase and Mable

Join Loonan Stock Farm on Saturday, February 3, to evaluate bulls that will add profitability through calving ease, performance and carcass merit.

Visitors are welcome to visit the farm before the sale to view the bulls. We are happy to assist you in your bull selections to help you reach your cow herd profitability goals.

Lazy H Ranch Kansas leans on diversification and relationships for current and future success. I n recent years, Lazy H Ranch Kansas located in Hays, Kan., has endured damaging windstorms, devastating wildfires, and extensive droughts. Yet, despite the trials and temporary setbacks the registered Angus operation continues to thrive. 48

Mark Rohr, owner of Lazy H Ranch Kansas, works to produce, develop, and market registered Angus bulls and females. He also partners with his father, Maurice Rohr, owner of Smoky Hill Charolais Farm, to raise high-quality Charolais ge-

netics. Together they have created a powerhouse of genetics primarily focused on producing herd sires that will bring profitability to commercial cattle producers.

January 2024 | THE STOCKMAN

Through Trials HISTORY Maurice Rohr started the Charolais operation in northwestern Kansas, in 1961, making him one of the pioneers in the Charolais industry. After college, Mark returned to the cattle operation bringing his expertise to the program. In 1998, Mark added Angus genetics with an emphasis on producTHE STOCKMAN | January 2024

ing bulls for commercial cattle producers. The Angus genetics came to Kansas through Mark’s brother, Mitch Rohr, who was operating The Lazy H Ranch in Larkspur, Colo.

CURRENT OPERATION Lazy H Ranch Kansas (LHR) and Smoky Hill Charolais Farm (SHCF) sell more than 150 bulls a year. Cus-

tomers purchase bulls private treaty or through the operation’s annual spring production sale. The Rohrs catalog about 125 Angus bulls and 25 Charolais bulls for their online sale. This March marks the 22nd annual production sale for the Rohrs. Through the years the family has created a demand for its Angus and Charolais genetics. The Angus side of the business has grown exponen49

tially through Mark’s leadership. A majority of the cow herd and all of LHR’s registered cattle are Angus. The Rohrs run about 200 Angus and 50 Charolais momma cows. In addition, they operate a large embryo transplant program. They implant as many as 250 embryos in cooperator herds each year.

Currently, the operation’s cattle numbers are down by 100 head due to a wildfire as well as drought. “In October 2022 we had cattle in a fire, then the drought from 2022 to 2023 caused us to cut numbers way back. That has been a little bit of a damper,” Mark shared.

BENEFITS OF DIVERSIFYING The headquarters for LHR and SHCF in Kansas is situated on the 200-acre home ranch established by Maurice in 1961. The size of the cattle herd requires the Rohrs to find additional avenues for managing the operation. LHR utilizes cattle partnerships, land leases, and extensive embryo transplant to diversify its business. Mark credits the diversity of his operation for keeping the ranch viable in difficult circumstances. When the October 2022 wildfire struck it wiped out half of LHR’s spring calvers, about 40 head. “In the fire, we lost genetics but at the same time because we utilize a significant amount of embryo transplant, we were not hurt like most people would be hurt. We are fortunate to have a good size embryo program,” Mark explained.

_____ ______ Similarly, when water spickets ran dry and the recent drought forced some cattle operations out of business, LHR leaned on its partners in other states. “When you have partnerships like I have in Missouri, due to the drought we were able to truck cattle back to Missouri and I was able to utilize pasture there this past summer to help us through the drought or otherwise I would have had to sell even more head,” Mark said.

CLEAR MISSION A clear mission serves as the driving force for the cattle operation. Following the advice of his father and other mentors, Mark guides his management decisions by constantly thinking about what will help his customers make the most money. “Keeping your customer profitable, not just happy, not

just satisfied, but profitable is probably the key to any operation,” Mark stated. Additionally, no matter the current trends in the industry, LHR resolves to keep certain traits in

check. Through the decades of raising registered Charolais and Angus herd sires, the focus has never wavered from striving for strong carcass traits. “I always call it pounds in the pasture, because a lot of our customers are going to take the animals to town at weaning or sell them on Superior. They are not going to develop them. They are going to send them on to the next step in the process,” Mark explained. “So, we want our animals to be profitable for them. But more importantly, we want the guys that they are selling to, to keep coming back to them every year. To do that we have to keep the carcass in them because those guys are feeding them, harvesting them, and they are going on the grid.” Mark makes customer herd visits to help him determine what improvements he needs to implement to his program to produce herd sires that will increase his customers’ profitability. Additionally, Mark works with his bull customers to develop strategies that will improve their herds and help them reach their goal of producing a high-quality meat end product.

MATERNAL GENETICS LHR utilizes an intensive embryo transfer program, flushing about six Angus donor females and two Charolais donor females each year. Though the Rohrs raise a majority of their own replacement heifers, they seek new donor females for the operation from time to time. In some circumstances, Mark partners with other producers on high-dollar industry leading donor females. LHR looks for outcross genetics to infuse into the herd through its embryo transfer program, this practice produces fresh genetics, especially for longtime bull customers. “If there is something out there that we need to add to our circuit to help our customers we are going to do it. I don’t want to lose a bull customer due to genetics,” Mark added. THE STOCKMAN | January 2024

During its annual production sale, LHR includes 40 to 50 females. Throughout the year, the operation markets show heifers through private treaty at the ranch or in online sales.

BULL DEVELOPMENT The acreage limitation at the home ranch requires the Rohrs to utilize cooperator herds and other business partnerships for the day53

to-day care for part of the cow herd. At the ranch headquarters, the primary focus of operation is bull development. “Once they get weaned those cattle come back here and they get developed here. They are under our lock and key until they find their new owner,” Mark stated. Mark wants to keep a watchful eye on the bulls as they develop. The day-to-day interaction gives him the opportunity to ensure the 54

bulls are docile, phenotypically sound, and healthy. The bulls receive a mixed dry ration of hay and feedstuffs, plus a supplement product developed by BioZyme and VitaFerm. In 2015, Mark accepted an offer by VitaFerm to act as a dealership for its products. While running the cattle operation, Mark also manages a VitaFerm dealership. His relationship with VitaFerm gives him the

opportunity to provide VitaFerm mineral and products to his cattle customers at a wholesale price. This opens the doors of communication between Mark and his cattle customers on a regular basis, not just when it is time to sell bulls. Additionally, Mark finds gratification in the fact the bulls from his operation and their offspring are receiving the health benefits of the supplements. January 2024 | THE STOCKMAN

“The knowledge that those VIPs, who I have had in my corner, has allowed me to have the knowledge today that I am blessed with,” Mark shared. “They are a phone call away and have taught me a lot. I was fortunate to have that opportunity and receive that knowledge.” Mark also holds a heartfelt gratitude for his friends in the cattle industry. He experienced firsthand

the selfless acts of service offered by fellow cattle producers when difficulties struck. “If you didn’t know this before the fires, the droughts, the storms - there are people who you meet and people you serve as far as customers in the ag industry that are the finest in the world,” Mark concluded. learn more lhrbulls.com

BLESSINGS OF MENTORSHIP When Mark assesses all the reasons for his ranch’s success, first and foremost he attributes his accomplishments to the guidance from his father, Maurice, and to the mentorship from Bill Rishel of Rishel Angus in North Platte, Neb., and Jim Brinkley, a member of the American Angus Association Board of Directors and owner of Brinkley Angus Ranch in Milan, Mo. Topp Herefords—Crossbreeding Solutions

» Topp Herefords makes crossbreeding easy—consistently improving net profits in commercial Angus herds. On average, commercial Angus herds can expect a 5 percent increase in weaning weights from heterosis. If the average cow raises seven calves, that’s an additional $248 in gross revenue. Multiply that by a herd of 250 cows and you are adding $62,000 to the bottom line without additional inputs. Seeds in Season

Functional forage and pasture.

contributed article by Justin Fruechte, Ag Product Expert Renovo Seed, Brookings, S.D. renovoseed.com

FEEDING RIGHT WIDENS MARGINS Most of us are in

winter feeding mode. Winter feeding means more intimate time spent with the cow herd that, for the most part, has been lost for the past few months gleaning stalks or cover crops. The upper Midwest has experienced a fantastic fall and early winter for grazing and cows are coming in with exceptional body condition scores. As you start to make repairs on the feed wagon (that would have been easier in August) and tweak feed rations as feed stuff samples come back, this is a perfect time to analyze how much feed you will waste this year. This is always a shocking figure to be surprised with. Shrink will never completely be eliminated, so we’ll take a look at the convenient ways to lower shrink.

FORECAST THE RATION Since we are rolling into January, there are some things that have happened that we can’t go back on 66

in order to save feed. All our feedstuff options are put up for the year and we know what we must work with. Proper feeding now needs to take place to save or salvage what we have. The biggest opportunity to save feed is to not overfeed an ingredient. The best way to not do this is by building out rations based off your cow’s nutritional needs. There are many great nutritionists out there capable of doing this, so I highly encourage you to work with your

feed representatives to get their beef nutritionist on your side developing and forecasting rations. If this isn’t an option, I’ve always enjoyed working rations and budgets through ration balancer calculators. University of Minnesota and Oklahoma State University both have Excel-formatted ration calculators. These are handy to give ballpark ideas of where your rations need to be. Just know, these are built from averages and your feedstuffs will have some variations. January 2024 | THE STOCKMAN

CONSIDER STAGE OF PRODUCTION

REDUCE WASTE

There are a few big takeaways you will find after running your forecasted rations. Cow rations from mid-gestation to early lactation will drastically vary in levels of crude protein. We often overfeed alfalfa hay through gestation in a time when we can really cut costs from a ration. Save that good quality alfalfa hay for your lactating cow when she has a higher requirement for protein.

Reducing feed waste during the actual feeding of the cows seems like a no-brainer, but it always takes effort and attention to overcome. Waste from sorting is usually the largest contributor to hay waste. The best way to combat this is to grind low quality feeds to get smaller particle sizes that can’t be sorted. Low quality hay will have around 20 percent waste, and at a value of $150/ton, the waste accounts for $30/ton.

The other ingredient we often overfeed is corn silage. The energy requirements during this time are also lower, and corn silage should be diluted with roughages. This will lower feed costs and prevent the cows from getting obese. Corn silage is a great resource for energy during cold days when your cows are rapidly burning calories, and obviously needed if you need to bump your body condition scores higher.

When you calculate out the hour grinding fee, it usually ends up around $10/ton. This is a great way to save feed waste and lower feed ration costs. This also provides you with a great opportunity to grind your higher protein hay with those ditch hay bales or corn stalk bales when your cow’s crude protein needs are lower. Another easy fix to lower feed waste is to not allow your cow access to all the feed she wants. Bunk feeding or limit feeding to her requirements will always decrease waste versus free choice feeding. The last easy fix is to prevent more

shrink is to stop any more spoilage. If you have bales sitting in a low wet area, move them to higher ground. If your DDG’s are in an open gravity wagon, stick a tarp on it. If your silage pile is not covered and has a foot of moldy crust on top – well, remember it for next year because there’s no fix now. Winter months are our most expensive feeding months, and feed costs are still high. In a bullish cattle market, it’s easy to let loose on expenses. But, by focusing on doing rations right and minimizing waste, you’ll spread those margins even wider. Photos courtesy Renovo Seed learn more renovoseed.com Renovo Seed, Brookings, S.D. The cross between a Chianina/Chiangus with any of the British breeds emphasizes hybrid vigor, exceptional growth rates and carcass quality. Utilizing a Chianina or Chiangus bull on your females can increase weaning & yearling weights, yield grades, feed efficiency and more.

Successful beef production starts and ends with the cow. Chi and Chi-cross mothers provide a complete package of maternal skills full of staying power. The maternal heterosis bred into these cattle compliments the natural mothering ability of Chianina.

FOCUSED ON By Sarah Hill photos courtesy Berwald Family

&

Berwald Red Angus is committed to raising high-quality Red Angus cattle and crops. ustin Berwald can talk about Red Angus genetics all day. The beef producer from Toronto, S.D., has a knack for identifying and discussing genetic lines in cattle a skill he likens to his experiences growing up in the dairy industry. Berwald’s grandparents, Arlen and Eunice, had a small dairy

78

and beef cattle herd near Summit, S.D., and moved the farming operation to the current location around 1964. “My grandfather was really into registered Holsteins and helped establish the foundation of a lot of today’s genetics, but he always had about 40 Hereford cows, too,” Austin Berwald says.

Arlen and Eunice’s son, Michael, added Red Angus cattle to the operation in 1996, at the encouragement of Austin’s mother, Kimberly, who grew up on a multi-generational black Angus operation. The family also milked 1,200 dairy cows while Austin was growing up, in addition to farming corn, soybeans and alfalfa, operating a feedlot, and doing custom forage harvesting.

January 2024 | THE STOCKMAN

BEEF HERD BEGINNINGS “My dad happened to be at the sale barn and was interested in having a beef herd,” Berwald says. “Walking through the pens, he came upon these Red Angus cattle, and he really liked their docility and udders. He never had a registered Red Angus herd, but he treated them like they were a registered herd.” Over the years, Michael built up his “hobby” Red Angus herd to around 200 cows. Berwald’s interest in the operation started early, with his attending artificial insemination (AI) school at the young age of 13. “I did a lot of the breeding on the dairy side, and I really enjoyed it,” Berwald says. “As soon as I became skilled at inseminating, it was very easy to implement that on the Red Angus side, helping to select matings.” Arlen began teaching Berwald the ropes of the crop side of the business, and Berwald was managing the row crop farming before he even graduated from high school. Since then, he’s grown the Red Angus herd to around 600 cows. The operation includes Austin, his mother, Kimberly, his wife, Becky, and their four children, Jaylee, Jaedyn, Jamison, and Jocelyn. Tragically, Austin’s oldest son, Jaxson, and father, Michael, passed away in 2021.

above The Berwald family, front (l-r): Jaedyn and Jamison. Back (l-r): Becky holding Jocelyn, Austin, and Jaylee.

In addition to the Red Angus herd and farming operations, Berwald also owns a custom forage harvesting business, harvesting crops for 28 customers with a large crew. “This year alone, we did more than 700 hours of work,” Berwald says. “We market a lot of the crops we raise, and the alfalfa hay is sold to a local dairy.” THE STOCKMAN | January 2024

SEEKING OUT THE BEST Having learned from his father, Berwald focuses on improving the beef herd’s genetics on feet and legs, udder, disposition, and fertility. He has intentionally sought out the best Red Angus genetic lines he can find and afford. “The biggest part of our breeding program is embryo transfers and in vitro fertilization calves,” Berwald 79

adds. “We have a nucleus of about 30 donor cows, while the rest of the females in the herd are commercial-based cows.” Berwald’s approach is that he’s not afraid to ask other Red Angus breeders for calves or embryos out of their best females. “These are cows you can’t actually buy to own yourself, because they’re a prize cow,” he says. “But the owner would be willing to sell an embryo or flush out of that cow. It’s a very long waiting game, but if you can get a $2,000 embryo that results in a viable, live calf out of those top cows, it’s a feasible gamble.”

credits Steve Mayer from C Bar Red Angus, Brownell, Kan., and Pieper Red Angus, Hay Springs, Neb., as two breeders who have helped him to get his start and served as mentors. “Two years ago, I rolled the dice a little bit and bought a really nice heifer calf from Canada,” Berwald says. “We flushed her successfully

There are a couple of other Red Angus breeders who have helped Berwald along the way. He 80

and got a really nice heifer out of her, as well as a powerful set of ET sons that are on test now.” Calving typically runs from the end of January through March at the Toronto location, and then females are shipped to ranches Berwald leases in northern South Dakota. Top females are bred back within 60 days postpartum, and in vitro flushing can be done up to 100 days of pregnancy - a tactic Berwald has also employed.

MAGIC FEED A self-described forage specialist, Berwald emphasizes forage for his Red Angus herd, as he says it’s the natural state for cattle diets. Their diets include a lot of ryelage, earlage, and wetter feeds to focus on rumen development and rumination. Each pen is fed a customized diet using Performance Beef Analytics, a ration software program. “I like to feed earlage - it’s like a magic feed,” Berwald says. “You don’t have to worry about acidosis, because you’re harvesting both the corn cob and husk, which has a lot of fiber and is really healthy for the cattle’s gut.” THE STOCKMAN | January 2024

Bulls are developed using a ration with forage, earlage, grass hay, a little silage, and a bull challenger pellet from CHS.

ANNUAL SALE In the fall of 2022, Berwald decided that he was ready for his first annual production sale, so he teamed up with his good friend and Red Angus breed expert, Seth Leachman. The sale was held at the farm on March 8, 2023, was a great success and tribute to all the hard work Berwald had put into the program.

UPCOMING PRODUCTION SALE: Wednesday, March 13, 2024 Toronto, S.D.

The 51 bulls averaged $11,824, including a $90,000 herd sire to ABS Global, and he also sold 12 of his top replacement open heifers for an average of $19,375. The 2024 sale is scheduled for March 13, 2024, and Berwald plans to offer more than 100 bulls and another draft of donor quality open heifers. The sale will also feature the bull calves from the C-Bar program in Kansas. learn more facebook.com @BerwaldRedAngus 81

BENCHMARKS FOR EMBRYO TRANSFER PROGRAMS W

hat are realistic expectations for an embryo transfer program? Most producers who utilize ET have a pretty good idea of what to expect. When new producers want to start an embryo transfer program, it can be a real let down when their first collection comes in with only one to three embryos or even a total bust. More than once we’ve had new producers experience results that were less than what they expected and were ready to give up after the first attempt. The other scenario is the new producer that obtains a large collection of 20 or more grade one embryos that results in 80 percent or higher pregnancy rates. After such an awesome start, it can set expectations unrealistically high.

about one of his clients who used the number of embryos collected as a selection-criteria for his donors. Because of his selection for donors with larger flushes, his client had developed a herd that averaged 13 embryos per collection. When I started ET practice, I was told that 30 percent of the cows will make 70 percent of the embryos and over the years I have found this statistic to be pretty true. So, if you are lucky enough to have your best donor fall into the 30 percent of higher

producing donors, it may take less collections to meet your needs. But if you need to make 100 embryos to transfer in the spring, it will take over 17 collections to produce that number based on the overall average. This is probably one of the reasons that IVF has become so popular. It is much easier to build up a bank with IVF because donors can be collected every two weeks versus conventional flushes which typically have an interval of five to eight weeks between collections.

NUMBERS GAME Looking over results from 2023, there were 5.79 usable embryos produced per collection. This is all the good and the bad combined. One has to realize that basically ET is a numbers game and while results can be all over the board, with increased numbers of collections you will find a number that is average for your herd. I was at a meeting where a practitioner was telling 92

EMBRYO DEVELOPMENT RATES With IVF we like to look at embryo development rates (EDR) of oocytes collected. For IVF reverse sort collections, we expect about a 33.6 percent embryo development rate from the oocytes collected. If they are not reverse sorted and nonsexed semen is used, we will see about a 1 percent improvement in embryo development rate at 34.6 percent. We probably see the lowest EDR when we use frozen sexed semen for fertilizing oocytes. This usually averages about a 25 percent EDR for frozen sexed semen. There is also a lot of variability between bulls with the frozen sexed semen. Part of the reason for the lower EDR is that the semen is injured to some degree by the sorting process and then there is some damage due to the freezing on top of that. If I have my choice of using frozen sexed semen or using the reverse sort process for IVF, I will prefer to use the reverse sorted semen unless there is some proven history of the frozen sexed semen working well in IVF. Part of the reason that reverse sort probably performs better is that the dead sperm can be cleaned up from the sample during the reverse sort process. With frozen sexed semen, there is no way to clean up the dead sperm from the sample post thaw.

PREGNANCY RATES For pregnancy rates there is some variability between IVF versus conventional embryos. I typically tell producers to expect about a 50 percent pregnancy rate on frozen IVF embryos. There tends to be

THE STOCKMAN | January 2024

more pregnancy loss with IVF embryos, so this average will often dip below 50 percent. If you can coordinate to transfer IVF embryos fresh, you can typically help the pregnancy rates by 5 percent or more. It seems that results with IVF embryos can tend to be more all over the board versus conventionally collected embryos which tend to have more consistent results. On frozen conventional embryos, pregnancy rates will often range between 50 to 75 percent with a 65 percent pregnancy rate being fairly typical. With fresh transferred conventional embryos, you can also see about a 5 percent or more increase in pregnancy rates. Fresh conventional transfers can even see pregnancy rates as high as 80 percent or more when everything is right with the recipient quality and nutrition.

RECIPIENT PREPARATION When setting up recipients for fresh transfers, I like to set up about six cows per donor collected as a guideline. This will give you about the right number of cows for fresh transfer if you reach the average number of embryos collected. When setting up recipients with a 7-day CIDR program, I hope to see about 75 to 80 percent or more of the cows display standing heat by the end of the third day after pulling the CIDRS. That leaves about 20 percent or less that haven’t displayed heat. On those we will give GNRH to force ovulation so they can be used for transfers at the scheduled appointment.

At that percentage, a high percent of the non-responders will usually have good CL’s when given GNRH. Many of those were probably cows that were going to come in within the next day. If we don’t see at least 75 to 80 percent in by the end of day three, then I am less optimistic that a high percentage of the non-responders will work. We will still use GNRH on these cows, but typically we will have more kick outs on this type of group. When it comes to optimizing recipient response, make sure that they are getting their nutritional needs met. Meeting the energy and protein needs of the recipient is critical for getting the best response to synchronization. Also, make sure the trace mineral needs are met as well, this is critical for formation of a good CL on the ovary as well as general metabolic needs. Use these numbers as a guideline for reaching your targets when planning your needs for spring transfers. I am always satisfied when we have a collection of six embryos or more, as I know we are holding up the average. If you feel your average embryos per collection needs to improve, work with your practitioner to investigate ways to improve results. learn more collisonembryoservices.com Dr. Vince Collison is co-owner of Collison Embryo and Veterinary Services PAC in Rockwell City, Iowa.

Tell us about yourself.

Hello there, my name is Addy McDowell. Like many others, I have been fortunate enough to grow up in the beef industry and am a third-generation cattle producer. My grandfather, Neil Hadley, is a firm believer in black Angus cattle, but my father, Tom Van Vliet, preferred Maine-Anjou. Two worlds that instilled the love of showing, but also the importance of a strong maternal cow herd. Growing up my siblings and I thrived on working with our show cattle. After graduating from Iowa State, I got the opportunity to do a six-month adventure in Australia working on different cattle operations, varying from a production Angus operation in Southern Australia to a progressive Brangus operation in Queensland to a Cattle Station in the peak of Northern Australia gathering wild bulls from the bush. After that trip, there was no doubt in my mind that the cattle industry is where I wanted to stay. I currently work for DVAuction as a sales rep and have a small cattle photography business. My husband Klint and I own and operate Steady Run Genetics on Klint’s family farm in Southeast Iowa where we raise primarily Red Angus cattle. Utilizing embryo transfer we run a small recipient herd for select customers. We focus highly on females that will last and complete bulls that will help improve our customers’ herds.

What is your favorite cooking tip/trick? My mother always told me that if you were too busy to spend all day making supper, quickly start sautéing onions, and the family will think you have supper cooking while you quickly throw something together. But in all seriousness, preparing meals in advance that can be thrown in the oven or Crockpot is a life changer in our house.

Woolover® Limited

Fit N Forget (FnF™) Beef Calf Cover

Fitting the FnF™ Beef Calf Cover to a new-born increased the actual hide temperature of the calf by 32 degrees Fahrenheit in just four minutes! All beef ranchers are seeking to maximize their returns from their operation. A main income generator is the number of live calves that make weaning. The weather during late winter and spring can, and does, influence the number of newborn beef calves that survive some very brutal weather that can literally devastate the very survival of these new-borns. Woolover® Ltd, based in New Zealand, is no stranger to devastating stock losses. In fact, Woolover® Ltd was “born of necessity” back in 1993 after two snowstorms, 10 days apart, claimed the lives of 2 million lambs and 40,000 calves. The answer is WOOL - Working 24/7. USDA figures suggest towards 80,000 new-born beef calves perish annually from hypothermia. Woolover® Ltd then set about designing and making a beef calf cover that was totally biodegradable, made from wool, is designed to fit an 85 lb new-born beef calf, and would simply “fall off” after 3- 4 weeks having ensured the new-born beef calf survived, was accepted by the mother, and captured some additional growth rates along the way. The Result: The Woolover® Fit N Forget (FnF™) Beef Calf Cover. • New-born calves fitted with the FnF™ Beef Calf Cover are simply not at risk of dying from hypothermia, and they will grow faster. • The cover is totally biodegradable with wool providing the warmth and absorbency to wick moisture away from the hide and the Hessian Substrate providing some strength. Be it rain, snow, windchill or, simply from the birth process, covering a new-born beef calf with the FnF™ Beef Calf Cover makes sound financial sense. The cover will last for up to 3 – 4 weeks and then falls off. • Designed for an 85 lb. live weight beef calf at birth, which is the optimum weight, but will also fit smaller calves. • Wool is providing the warmth, is absorbent, breathable, comfortable to wear, is totally biodegradable and will ensure the Thermo – Neutral Zone, being the heart/ lung area, is kept at a constant temperature, both day and night despite the worst possible conditions = survival. Dr. Clint Hilt, leading Veterinarian with MWI Animal Health, based in Power, Montana, who assisted with a trial of 50 FnF™ Beef Calf Covers on his clients’ newborn calves said, “THESE COVERS ARE LIVESAVERS.” The trial was conducted on a day when it was -23 degrees Fahrenheit and, by simply fitting a FnF™ Beef Calf Cover to a new-born, the actual hide temperature of the calf increased by 32 degrees Fahrenheit in four minutes! The Woolover® Limited FnF™ Beef Calf Covers: ORDER ONLINE at www.wooloverdirect.com or phone: Busse Barron Acres [ BBA ] 715 296 7596. FnF™ Beef Calf Covers are sold in units of 100 or packages of 10.

American Chianina Association 50th Anniversary Series By Heather Smith Thomas photos courtesy American Chianina Association

Part 5 - Impact of Chianina on the U.S. Cattle Industry: Fullbloods, Composites, and the Future Reprinted with permission from the American Chianina Association

rom the first fullblood imports and their halfblood Chianina calves, to the current Chianina registry 50 years later, the breed’s exceptional genetic flexibility and versatility helped transform American beef cattle. Over time, the ACA had to alter registration rules as breeders explored the transformative powers of the Chianina’s genetic reach, which has been challenging. While some breeders wanted to keep the breed pure with just fullbloods, others wanted to be able to “breed up” to purebred, while others wanted to allow registration and pedigree tracking of composites.

F

quirements for registration.

CHIANINA COMPOSITES

• 1988 to 1991 – one-eighth (12.5%) Chianina or more – An increasing number of breeders continued exploring the genetic and marketing possibilities through adding non-Chianina genetics into ACA composites, such as Chiangus, Chiford and Red Chiangus, as well as registered Chianina.

“The cattle themselves and the Association kept changing,” says Koonce. “If you were to ask cattle folks in the U.S. today what a Chianina is they would probably say it’s black and polled. Even many Association members don’t realize how integral a part the fullblood semen played in the early days of creating the various composites we use today.”

• 1991 to Present – No minimum percentage of Chianina.

Richard Koonce, former fieldman for the ACA, provides a timeline on what was registered: • 1972 to 1974 – half-blood (50%) Chianina or more – Initial use of 100% Italian Fullblood Chianina semen on American cattle of both beef and dairy breeds. • 1975 to 1988 – quarter-blood (25%) Chianina or more – By 1974, half-blood Chianina yearling bulls were in use, primarily as clean-up sires. Many breeders liked the looks and performance of the resulting calves enough to request the ACA lower the percentage Chianina re114

Miss Chianina USA – Registered in 1972 (ACA #40), Miss Chianina USA was the first American-born registered half-blood female. She was sired by Diaceto I and out of a Brown Swiss female. The use of 100% Chianina semen on dairy females was a common cross in the early years.

This happened with Simmentals as well. In 1989 when I went to the American Royal the Simmental show looked like a lineup of brown and white Holsteins. They were as big or bigger than the Chianina of that time. Then, just 2 years later, 95% of the cattle at the American Royal Simmental show were black. That’s what people wanted and that’s what breeders could sell. Just like Simmentals, Limousin and other Continental breeds; they’ve evolved from what they were originally while contributing to today’s “purebreds” and Americanized composites. These cattle have been adapted to what producers need, with European fullbloods providing the foundation for crossbreds and composites. “Why it evolved the way it has goes back to economics. Regardless of the breed, commercial or registered, people create and develop what they can sell,” says Koonce. Chianina cattle had a huge influence on the U.S. cattle industry after producers realized they needed to get their cattle bigger and leaner; and with Chianina they were able to do that in just one cross. “In the early 1970’s the emphasis was on purebreds,” says Myron Danner of Burwell, Neb. “People thought they could market the purebreds, but by the late 1970’s the percentage cattle were more popular because that’s where the value was. The best cattle were sired by a half-blood bull and out of an Angus female, or perhaps a Simmental cross female by then. Chianina could be utilized in a composite with lower percentage,” he says. “Currently, even 25% Chi in the mix can be ideal if you are keeping the heifers as replacements; having 25% to 50% makes a good cow. You don’t need a fullblood, but 5% to 10% may not be enough; somewhere in the middle makes a happy medium. As the nation’s cow herd became larger in frame size, you didn’t need THE STOCKMAN | January 2024

Friggio I – One of the most influential Italian Fullblood bulls in the ACA registry. He is a 1970 son of Bando I and has 5,275 progeny registered in the ACA herdbook, making him #3 in the top Italian Fullblood Sires list.

a high percentage. Back in the 70’s the average commercial cow probably weighed less than 1,000 pounds but today that same cow weighs 1,400 to 1,500 pounds, with some much bigger,” says Danner. Glen Klippenstein, former ACA CEO and early Chianina breeder, did a lot of crossbreeding early on and felt the Chianina added a great deal to the genetic mix. “We used several bulls including Friggio, Fagiano, Feltro and Faul, resulting in about 400 calves – finally ending up with about 45 amazing Chi-cross cows. For me, cows that are about 10 to 25% Chi make the ideal cross. They look almost like the Hereford or Angus they were crossed with, but better. I call it synergy.” “We are in the meat business; we needed animals that produce more beef – and we need to promote our product. I’ve always been interested in science and promotion, and there’s a lot of science behind the Chianina,” Glen says. Glen feels competition from Chianina spurred Angus and Hereford breeders to shape up and start producing something more profitable again. “I was recently going through

my old ‘bible’ and the weights we got from some of the Simmental and Chianina calves were great. Weaning weights were a little better and yearling weights a lot better than the Herefords and Angus at that time.” Then these breeds responded and made their cattle larger again. The heterosis, or hybrid vigor, achieved when crossing Chianina with other breeds was fantastic and dramatic; this is the greatest free tool available to producers. “You get more fertility, longevity and better health by crossing. This is something you gain with heterosis much quicker than you can by selective breeding within a breed generation after generation. This is one reason we got into the Angus business too, because of the heterosis we could obtain by crossing Chianina and Angus,” Glen says. The early impact of Chianina-Angus cross feeder calves and market show steers was not lost on the ACA leadership. In February 1976, at the Fourth ACA National Meeting, the Board of Directors approved the Chiangus registry for black-hided, polled or scurred, Chianina-Angus cross breeding stock. 115

1986 Roger & Doug Deiter of Faulkton, S.D., became members of the American Chianina Association in March of 1981 and remained active members until their complete dispersal in 2008. They have registered more cattle than any other member of the ACA and held annual sales each year. Pictured are Roger Deiter (left), Bob Vantrease (former ACA CEO) & Doug Deiter in the early days of their operation.

“This was the first continental breed association in America to adopt a hybrid-composite registry program. Soon after, more ACA members recorded Chiangus within the ACA registry,” says Koonce. Since that foundational milestone, other U.S. breed associations – Simmental (SimAngus), Limousin (LimFlex), Gelbvieh (Balancers), Salers (Optimizers) and Maine-Anjou (Mainetainers and Maine Angus) – have instituted similar registry programs for their memberships, In 1978, the ACA Composite Breed registry for Chiangus had progressed to the point of a few third-generation Chiangus x Chiangus individuals. “To designate this genetic significance the ACA added a generational component for Chiangus registration certificates. First generation Chiangus became 1CA’s; Chiangus x Chiangus were 2CA’s; and, when every animal on a 3-generation Chiangus pedigree are Chiangus they are PCA’s (Purebred Chiangus),” says Koonce. When the ACA added the Chimaine registration distinction for Chianina and Chiangus crossed with Maine-Anjou in 1981, the composites were similarly recognized as 1CM’s; 2CM’s; and PCM’s. In 2018, the the 116

Chimaine registry was discontinued; and those animals are now registered in the ACA as Chianina. The Chiford classification was added in 1986 to record composites of registered Herefords and existing Chianina or Chi x Hereford composites and are indicated in the ACA herd book by 1CF’s; 2CF’s; and PCF’s. The latest breed registry combination is Red Chiangus (1RC’s; 2RC’s; and PRC’s). “Roger and Doug Dieter (Dieter Brothers) of Faulkton, S.D., (RDD prefix) must be mentioned in this history,” says Koonce. “They registered more cattle in the ACA than any other establishment. The ACA registry recorded 18,562 RDD animals from 1983 until 2007 – about 773 per year. Many years they approached or exceeded 1,000 head. Of these registrations 7,973 were for Chianina and Chiangus bulls. Dieter Brothers were included for many years in BEEF magazine’s Top 100 Seed Stock operations (herds marketing at least 250 bulls annually). Regarding BEEF magazine’s Top 100 Seed Stock operations, CK Cattle, Hope Hull, Ala., has been included for the last 3 years (20192021) recording annual bull sales of

up to 276 bulls last year,” he says. “For annual sales, Willow Oak Chiangus Ranch, Rogersville, Tenn., must be noted; they conducted continuous sales since 1995 usually selling 50 to 100 bulls plus additional females. More recently, Dennis Clarahan, Harper, Iowa has registered 500 DCL prefix bulls out of the 1,440 Chianina/Chiangus Clarahan Farms has recorded.”

CHANGING TYPE “The type of cattle and demand for various types of cattle changed over the years from short fat ones to larger cattle. But once the cows got bigger, breeders started to go the other way,” Ed Miller says. “The average cow today, after having Continental blood infused – whether Charolais, Simmental, Maine Anjou, Saler – is now considered too big for certain environments.” Miller has been a longtime member of the ACA and also served on the ACA staff for 8 1/2 years as Marketing Director and most recently as a past ACA Board President. He started with this breed in 1979. “The Chianina/Angus cross (3/8 Chi and 5/8 Angus) at that time was called Ankina. The Ankina Association January 2024 | THE STOCKMAN

was based in Ohio and merged with the ACA early on. My dad bought our first one from Charles and Kay Burk of Texas and we started showing them in 4-H and family-oriented shows,” Ed says. “Although we mostly showed Angus cattle through our 4-H years, there were always a few cows that got bred to Iroito (fullblood Chianina) early on. In 1987 we purchased Dakota Paycheck from Keith Wipple of Nebraska to start our Chiangus herd.” “People were single-trait selecting for size at first and not for the economically important traits to keep cows in the herd more than 5 years; we were just trying to make them big,” he says. “Exotic breeds were a tool to get them bigger quickly.” “I don’t think there is another exotic breed that has added to change in the beef industry as fast as the Chianina when they were brought to the U.S, nor another breed that added to the show industry the way Chi cattle did. Whether good or bad, you rarely see a steer or heifer win at any show that does not have at least a little Chi in its background,” Ed says. The look of the Chianina adds to a show animal – producing cattle with great presence, a unique front end and overall great look. “We must give credit to the good cattlemen who bred them, like Jerry Adamson, Myron Danner, Harlan Ritchie, Glen Klippenstein, and many more. It’s been a unique group of people involved with these cattle, and this is one of the most unique breeds ever brought to this country. Think of the number of winning show steers/heifers across the country with Chi blood in them. And there is not another continental breed that has ever accomplished what Chi cross steers and heifers have done at the National Western Fed Beef Contest or Beef Empire Days. Myron Danner and his cattle THE STOCKMAN | January 2024

dominated these competitions over the years.” The ACA put itself into a unique position by allowing crossbreeding early on. “This may have been the first breed to allow composites to be registered, because at that time it was not popular. Today, however, there are very few breeds that don’t have a composite registry in their association. Back when the ACA did it, everyone thought we were crazy, and maybe it was the wrong way to go, but I don’t know how the breed would have survived if we had not. Everyone wanted to cross them,” says Ed.

IMPORTANCE FOR COMMERCIAL CATTLEMEN Koonce says the most important aspect of any breed is what it can do for commercial cattlemen. “Seedstock breeders often get so focused on their own cattle that it’s easy to lose focus on the commercial aspect. I learned more after I left the ACA from western commercial cattlemen than I did working for the association. The commercial folks taught me a lot,” he says. Cattle have to work out on the ranch and make a profit. “One reason the ACA is not a bigger association and why the big fullbloods and high-percentage cattle they

were breeding clear up into the early 1990’s were not popular was that they just didn’t work in the commercial world and the commercial people have not forgotten this. It’s hard for the ACA now because even though this little Association created and adapted some cattle that will actually work in the commercial world today, many commercial guys don’t want to get bitten again. There are some great composites now, but those early problems are long remembered, and with Chianina those were horrendous,” Koonce says. “Early on, some of the cattle had disposition issues we hadn’t planned on, along with lack of milk. The females, under practical conditions calving for the first time at 2 ½ to 3 years of age were just too big. You could get them bred to calve at 2 years old, but out on range conditions they would not rebreed for their second calf,” he says. A certain percentage of Chianina genetics in a blend works very well, however, with hybrid vigor, a combination of genetics creates benefits that are more than the sum of its parts. Chianina crosses very well with other breeds, and back in the mid-1970s people kept asking where they could find some black percentage bulls. “So, in 1976 we started with about 15 head, and then in 1977 we started the all-bull sale at Denver because ranchers wanted

117

American Chianina Association 50th Anniversary Series

percentage bulls; they got some halfblood bulls and quarter-blood bulls and discovered that the bulls that were one-quarter Chianina were what they liked best. However, as things evolved we’ve gotten down to a lower percentage of Chi blood,” says Koonce. “Roger Dieter in South Dakota (Dieter Brothers) really pushed the envelope, using more Angus bulls, especially on their heifers. Over time they kept dropping the percentage of Chianina blood in their cows. My observation was that by doing this they increased early puberty, fertility and improved milk and udders, yet still had that Chi influence and didn’t sacrifice much weaning weight and yearling weight. They also brought down mature weight, especially in females; that’s how we got from a quarter, down to an eighth and finally in 1991 the percentage requirement was simply that one of the parents had to be registered with the ACA,” he says. “This will probably always be a contentious issue. Some breeders think that’s not enough Chianina and how can we call it a Chianina,” Koonce says. Just having that Chi influence is beneficial, however, and makes a difference in overall desirable traits in that animal. John Coble swears by the benefits of a little Chi influence in commercial cattle. He is now 87 years old and still works with Willow Oak Chiangus in Tennessee. “I’ve worked for Willow Oak for 33 years. The owner, Richard Arnold, is the best man I’ve ever worked for. I do all the matings and currently we’ve probably got the best bull we’ve ever raised. As a calf he weaned at 850 pounds, adjusted to 897. Every bull we sell, we guarantee for a year, and we also guarantee an additional 70 pounds on every calf, under good management. Commercial cattlemen need something that will work and make a profit. Chianina are the 118

absolute best breed for the commercial livestock industry, in a percentage animal,” he says. “We have one customer who came to our sale about 10 years ago and bought 12 Chiangus bulls, then went to Texas and bought 18 Angus bulls. He split the herd and bred about half the cows to Angus and half to Chiangus bulls. A year and a half later he told me that in both groups the pregnancy rate was the same, calving was the same, but the Chiangus-sired calves at weaning weighed 121 pounds more than the Angus-sired calves. The next year we sold about 120 bulls to him and his dad. He hadn’t bought any bulls for a couple of years, so last year Richard called to see if anything was wrong, and he said he didn’t need any more at that time. His bulls were 8 and 9 years old and still doing the job. His Angus bulls only lasted 4 or 5 years, but his Chiangus lasted a lot longer,” John says.

THE ORIGINAL VALUE ADD BREED “In terms of cattle profitability, the Chianina impact on growth, conversion from feed to meat, vitality, livability, longevity and fertility has been great,” Klippenstein says. “I was always sad that this breed was not more heavily used. Some breeders have done a good job and hung in there through thick and thin, but today this has become more of a show breed because these cattle have the extra carcass and extra good look about them – a proud look. Most of us want a good-looking animal. Part of why we raise cattle is because we like their looks – with nice balance, blending of parts, etc.” The Chianina breed has a lot going for it. “The Angus folks just got ahead because they had a better program for promotion. Our beef industry is too segmented; we need to be more united as an industry,” he adds. We need to work together

but also respect and keep our diversity because one size doesn’t fit all. There are environments and situations where one breed or cross fits better than another. There are also differences within a breed; a person can select genetics that work for their environment, their goals and their customer’s needs. “The nice thing about Chianina genetics is that they can change things so quickly in terms of genotype and phenotype, when crossed in commercial herds. You can create cattle with fewer udder and eye problems. But it takes intelligence and discipline to breed cattle. You can’t just multiply numbers; you need to know how to fit them together to make them work optimally,” Glen says. “When you talk about edible product per unit of calorie input, you can’t beat the Chianina’s genetic influence. We are measuring all kinds of traits and putting EPDs on them – and have many EPDs today – but in the end we should be looking at input compared to output in any given quality. Chianina crosses have real efficiency, and if they live longer and have more calves because they are more fertile, that’s a bonus.” It costs a lot to develop or buy replacement heifers and if your cows can stay in the herd 3 or 4 more years it saves a lot of money and makes more money. The ACA has challenges ahead just like all breed associations, but none that they cannot overcome. “When you have the types of cattle the ACA registers, you have the flexibility to make the type and kind that can profit in your program and environment from show ring to rail hook,” Ed says. Editor’s Note: This is the final article of the multipart series on the history of the American Chianina Association. We hope you have enjoyed learning about the early days of the breed and its impact on the beef industry from its beginning in the 1970s to today. learn more chicattle.org

LAUREN WOLTER CROWNED 2023-2024 MISS AMERICAN ANGUS Illinois junior selected to serve the Angus breed for the upcoming year. In a notebook holding dreams penned by a younger version of herself, 18-year-old Lauren Wolter, Aviston, Illinois, now makes a check mark next to an important goal after being named the 2023-2024 Miss American Angus. Wolter was crowned during the annual American Angus Association Awards Dinner and Reception Sunday, Nov. 5. While Wolter has had hopes of 126

wearing the red coat since she met former queens like Keegan Cassady and Maddie Butler-Mosiman, serving as Miss American Angus means so much more than just an item crossed off her lofty to do list. “Ten-year-old Lauren is very happy - she’s definitely beaming,” the newly crowned queen said. “But for me Miss American Angus has always just been somebody that inspires. This title is being a role model.” Wolter’s parents, Bradley and Kimberly, are first generation Angus breeders, and the entire family is thankful for the many people who’ve offered both help and support during those initial years in the beef industry.

McCURRY AWARDED INAUGURAL YOUNG BREEDER AWARD Kansas cattlemen recognized during 2023 Angus Convention

It was friends in the Illinois Junior Angus Association that first gave Wolter the inspiration to lend a helping hand to her younger peers. She said she has hopes of empowering “little girls from coast to coast” during her term. Wolter’s seen first-hand how confidence and hard work can pay dividends for those involved in the breed. She has plans to remind young breeders of that truth during the next year. “I’m just very thankful that the judges and the committee trusted me with this position,” Wolter said. Her hope is to carry out the Miss American Angus role to the fullest, being an advocate and setting the right example for young Angus enthusiasts. “I just hope that I’m someone that is like what Maddie Butler was to me.” Wolter will balance her year of service with her studies at Kansas State University, where she is perusing a degree in animal science and industry with a focus in animal products. She has plans to continue her education and obtain a Ph.D. in

The success and longevity of a reliable pedigree requires two things – good cattle managed by good people. It’s always easier said than done, but John McCurry, recipient of the American Angus Association’s inaugural Young Breeder Award, might prefer the tougher more educational route. “I can remember my dad; he was fed up.” McCurry was in college at Kansas State University a few hours away from home. “We didn’t know where we were going, who was going to do the work,” McCurry remembers. “We were fall calving, and he told me was going to turn Hereford bulls out on all those cows and just make the best baldies we could and go commercial.” With college graduation on the horizon, McCurry was torn beJanuary 2024 | THE STOCKMAN

tween seeking employment outside the farm or returning home. When he heard his father’s new plan, he skipped a week of school plus Thanksgiving break to go home and get everything in order. “I synchronized those cows and got them all artificially inseminated,” McCurry says. “Then and there, I knew I was committed.” McCurry was recognized during the American Angus Association® Awards Reception and Dinner in Orlando, Florida. This is the first time the Young Breeder Award was presented and is designed to highlight a young, registered Angus breeder for their leadership within the Angus breed, participation in Angus programs and innovation within their herd. McCurry’s success as a young breeder was supported by a long Angus history in his family. Beginning their journey into farming and cattle in the early 1900s, the original McCurry Brothers paved their legacy with competitive wins in the showring across the country in the 1960s and 1970s. “They had success anywhere they went across the Midwest. Multiple state fairs, and of course the bigger shows like Denver and [at that time] Arizona,” John says. “Dad would be the oldest son and he left the operation in 1975 and was the only McCurry boy that did so. He made it about fifteen miles down the road before ultimately returning to Burrton after meeting his wife, my mom, Mary.” No stranger to the breed, Mary was the third generation on her family’s Tennessee farm to raise black-hided cattle. She was working toward her master’s degree in meat science from K-State when she met Andy, McCurry’s father. 128

Mary and Andy moved back to Burrton after marrying, bringing their two children, McCurry and his sister, Emily. Both were active in the National Junior Angus Association, and McCurry even went on to serve as a green coat on the National Junior Angus Association Board of Directors from 2001 to 2003. During his time on the K-State Livestock Judging Team, McCurry met his wife, Melody, also a livestock judging competitor at Oklahoma State University. Today, they have three children, Aubree, Molly and Drew. “All of them are very active in sports, and as we get going that will be difficult to balance, but their heart lies in the cattle industry,” McCurry says. The evolution of the McCurry operation is evident in their annual bull sale, marketing around 200 bulls and pioneering a commercial female sale. The latter, now in its ninth year, not only showcases the family’s commitment to their customers but also serves as a platform for community collaboration. The 1,500 head commercial female sale is a testament to their understanding of the industry’s dynamics and the importance of creating spaces for transactions within the Angus community. “It’s a great place for our customers to trade and do business with each other,” McCurry explains. Amidst the success, he emphasizes the diversity within the Angus breed. The recognition that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to breeding underscores their inclusive mindset. McCurry advocates for unity, reminding Angus breeders that, despite differences, they are all on the same team with

a shared goal of promoting and improving the breed. “There are so many great people that breed great cattle regardless of their breeding focus,” McCurry says. “You need to breed what you can market or sell or where that fan base is that follows you, and I’m a cheerleader for everybody and every avenue. It’s important for breeders to remember that we’re all on the same team. We can all sell different things to different people and have different breeding goals in mind. – Written by Max Stewart, Angus Communications --

traight About the Stockman. I’m a third-generation Angus breeder in northcentral North Dakota at Frey Angus which was started in the early 1950s by my grandfather, Allen E. Frey. This February 4th, 2024, will mark the 49th annual production sale which will include 120 registered Angus yearling bulls, 35 bred females, and 30 commercial bred females.”

UPCOMING SALE:

Annual Production Sale February 4, 2024 - Granville, N.D.

What about the beef cattle industry excites you the most?

Your favorite non-ranch activity to do in your free time?

Which animal (any species) has left the greatest impact on you?

There isn’t much free time, but my non-farm activity would be doing a little sightseeing while traveling across the country to sales or making deliveries.”

I could list many cows or sires; however, I believe in large sire groups of daughters leaving a lasting impact on the sustainability of the herd.”

What excites me the most is the passion, work ethic, and the drive that fellow cattle producers put forth into the industry.”

Your go-to sorting apparatus? A good horse and a paddle or flag.” learn more freyangusranch.com

Describe your best or worst day. One could pick many best or worst days, but for me it’s hard to pinpoint one as I feel humbled to be able to work with family and keep the family business and legacy going for years to come.”

What is your least favorite job on the ranch? Thawing a frozen Ritchie water tank in subzero weather.”
