For many of you, juggling your annual sale preparations while calving is a chore, and you are wondering how you will get everything done. But rest assured, you are not alone. Those of us that have helped with, worked at, or put on a sale are right there with you, feeling the same way. But when you finally get to Sale Day, you’ll remember why you keep doing this. It is for more than just your yearly income, it is for that rush of anticipation, excitement, and nervousness that feeds your soul. It is seeing that calf you saved in the middle of the night, now moving on to add value in another program. As Sale Day draws to a close, remember to say thank you to those that have been there working beside you for the past year - family, good friends, hired help, and most importantly your customers. None of us could do this alone and a simple ‘hey, thanks’, can go a lot further than you think. If you don’t believe me, check out this month’s ‘Leading the Way’ column for more on service after the sale. In 1859, a hunting party explored Russell county in central Kansas, including a small tributary of the Saline River, which led them to a site abundant in water, timber, and bison. One of the hunters, James R. Mead, described the site as paradise, and the tributary subsequently became known as Paradise Creek. The first post office in the area opened under the name of “Paradise” in 1875. Just southeast of Paradise, the Bar S Ranch was homesteaded in 1900 by Frank Stielow, Sr., Stephanie Dickerson’s great grandfather. Frank chose a quarter that was one of the only spring-fed areas in the county, and to this day, the spring has never dried up, even in the drought years.
This area, once abundant with Bison, is now home to a prominent purebred cattle operation raising Angus, Red Angus, and Charolais cattle. The headquarters of the Bar S Ranch is located on the quarter initially homesteaded by Frank, Sr. The ranch spans five generations of the Stielow family and is now run by Ken, Pat, and Chris Stielow, David and Stephanie (Stielow) Dickerson and their three sons. Both Ken and David’s families live off-site from the headquarters within a couple of miles, but the site is home to the backgrounding yard and sale barn. The ranch markets the bulk of its seedstock mainly to commercial cattlemen with many repeat customers. The production sale is always held
the second Friday in March, which is March 8th, this year. They do sell some bulls and females privately also throughout the year. A big chunk of the A.I. sired bulls are sold as yearlings through the production sale. The younger end of the bull calf crop are sorted off in the fall and retained. This group of bulls is developed slowly and then sold as two year olds in the production sale. These bulls are specifically saved back as a contemporary group that have not been picked through and are held over for the sale to offer some older bulls for their customers. Only the top one third of the bull calf crop are kept as bulls each year, and the rest are castrated and sent to the feedlot. The average weaning

weight ratio on the sale bulls is 104%. The steers are fed, and carcass data is collected through Ward Feedyard/ILS, in Larned and Great Bend, KS.

The Angus cattle have been part of the operation for a long time, and Kenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dad always had some registered Angus cows back in the 40s and built the herd from that point on. The operation started out as a commercial herd, but when Ken came back to the ranch, they expanded both the commercial and regis-
tered Angus herds. When Ken took over the operation, it was his goal to keep the end-product in mind for the commercial cattlemen. Because of that, he has kept his cows moderate and functional through the years. The Stielow family adheres to a strict selection process which is based on five criteria: fertility, calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight, and cow maintenance. Bar S was one of the first outfits to perform carcass testing for the American Angus Asso-
ciation (AAA). At one point, they had turned in more carcass data to the AAA than any other operation in the country except Summitcrest Angus. These were clear representations of sire groups and not just random matings.
RED ANGUS The Red Angus program was started initially by Ken in 1994 and was then dispersed in 2000 when they decided to get in the Charolais business. David and Stephanieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son, Ethan, was interested in showing some Red stockmanmag.com | THE STOCKMAN

males from the Batey Ranch in Montana when they dispersed. A great deal of the genetics that the Charolais program has been built around goes back to Batey Ranch bloodlines. They have been a low-input, functional, and moderate-framed set of cattle that have truly worked for the Bar S Ranch. The goal for the Charolais division is to produce terminal cross sires. The ranch doesn’t expect the Charolais cows to do the same thing the Angus females are expected to do. The Charolais cows need to produce big ribeyed, high-yielding bulls that
provide a terminal cross for their bull customers. Besides the three registered herds, Bar S also runs about 200 head of commercial cows. David says, “the registered cows are treated like the commercial herd, so that we don’t take our eye off of the ball on what the commercial cattlemen is looking for and what they need.” All the cows are commingled and are always on the same plane of nutrition, calved on grass, and are low labor and low-input. The only time cows are separated into distinct groups is when they are sorted

Angus, so Ethan and David started the Red Angus herd back up again in 2013. David realized some of the pedigrees that were once part of the herd were still very desirable genetics that would be good to tie into once again. Many of the females in the Red Angus herd still go back to some of the original tried and true bloodlines that were used in the 1990s herd.

The ranch tries to A.I. everything on the place one time and synchronizes about 250 head of cows at a time with a CIDR, prostaglandin protocol. Heifers are set up in the same type of program to mass breed as well. The commercial cows get set up for an embryo the first time, and then are turned out with the bulls. After all the cows are A.I.’ed the first time, the clean-up bulls are turned out.

groups of females to get half or three-quarter sisters. They like to use 60-150 units of semen from one bull to get large contemporary groups of calves. Pairs are separated into heifer pairs and bull pairs and are turned into summer pasture with an Angus and Charolais bull . This tightens up the calving window, and with more bull power, they can get more cows settled in the first service after A.I. Bar S Ranch culls hard on the both the commercial and purebred cowherds. Besides AI, 70-75 embryos are implanted every year. Most

of the cows that serve as donors are older cows that have been in production for several years and have been rock star-proven producers in the Paradise environment. David stated, “you ask any good commercial guy which cows are making him the most money, and he will tell you it’s his older cows. Too many seedstock producers totally write off longevity to focus on the newer genetics.” When asked about EPDs, David said, “they are a great tool in your tool box, but we need to remember there are a lot of other cow traits EPDs don’t measure. We try to stay away from extremes. Things like high milk and weaning EPDs aren’t free. Adding those extra extreme cattle are going to cost you more feed. You are doing the commercial cattlemen a disservice when you take the feed bucket away and ask those cattle bred with extreme EPDs to work in the same type of environment as regular cattle.” Over the years, the Stielow and Dickerson families have been active in several state and national beef associations. Ken has served as the chairman of the National Beef Board that handles the beef Check-Off program. He has also presided as President of the Kansas Livestock Association. Ken was the Stockman of the Year, for LMIC KSU/ASI in

David and Stephanie have been advisors the Kansas Junior Angus Association, as well as members of the AAA, and Kansas Angus Association. Their oldest son, Grady, is currently serving on the National Junior Angus Board. Their middle son, Ethan, is on the NAJRAE board for the Red Angus Juniors which serves as the junior national planning committee. The ranch is also a member of the American International Charolais Association and Red Angus Association of America. Although showing is not the focus of the program, the Bar

S Ranch has had some success over the years, with champions in Reno, Louisville, Denver, and Fort Worth. David is most proud of the champion Charolais pens of bulls and females, and the Red Angus heifer pen show champions in the yards in Denver. The Denver yard show is the most commercially-focused show, where weight per day of age (WDA), carcass data, and EPDs are all considered. The Bar S Ranch has had more Denver pen champions than any other ranch since 2010. The Dickerson boys have also won with bred and owned females and bulls at the Angus, Red Angus, and Charolais junior nationals over the last 10 years. In 2018, the boys had five division or reserve division champions combined at three different junior nationals that were
all bred and owned. As the Stielow/Dickerson family looks toward the future, the plan is for the boys to be involved in the ranch as much as possible and to be the 5th generation running the operation. Grady is attending Kansas State Univeristy, and Ethan will start at Butler Community College in the fall. Jayce is sophomore in high school. Cattle that have had a big impact on the Angus breeding program include Connealy Front Page and BC Lookout. The ranch has used a lot of Lookout influenced bulls, and the most notable bull used is Bar S Range Boss 1118. A son of his Bar S Range Boss 4002 is co-owned with Merit Cattle Company in SK, Canada. 4002 sired the

2016. The Stielow family was also the winner of the Certified Angus Beef (CAB) Commercial Commitment to Excellence Award in 1992.

Reserve National Champion bull and female in Canada this year. Merit Sting was one of the most talked about Angus bulls in Denver in 2019, and he is son of 4002. The other Angus bull that David is excited about is BC Alpha 1327. They will get over 100 calves out of him in 2019 and utilize him in the purebred and com-
mercial program heavily. On the Charolais side, Knob Creek and Rapid Fire have both been National Role of Excellence sires that they have had for herd sires to A.I. and had walking rights on. Current Charolais herd sires being used include EB California and Bar S Golden State 5532.

BEFORE & AFTER CALVING TO KEEP THEM IN THE HERD

With calving season here, hopefully the barns are ready, and you’re finding ways to stay warm between calf checks. The beginning of calving season always seems to start before you are ready, but by the end of the season, warmer weather and green grass seems to not show up soon enough. While the time between calving and pasture turn-out is undoubtedly super busy, it’s important during this time to pay attention to first-calf heifer pairs so they remain healthy and are ready to breed back come spring.

Hopefully, first-calf heifers are the first females to start calving on the ranch. Breeding programs set up this way have advantages over calving all cows at once. First, once calving season officially starts you are committed to checking cows every 3-5 hours. Later in the season, we get somewhat lazy, checking less often and time starts to get split between cows and spring planting preparations. As heifers require more attention than mature cows (calving difficulty, problems pairing up, nursing, etc.), making them a
priority at the beginning of the season will hopefully result in an overall more successful calving season. Second, calving first-calf heifers before mature cows allows her more time to recover from pregnancy/calving and resume fertile estrous cycles before breeding season. Traditionally, we need to rebreed cows within 80 days postpartum to maintain a 365 day calving interval. Breeding heifers to calve before mature cows allows them closer to 100 days to resume estrous cycles and sets them up with better chances of rebreeding with their second calf early in the breeding season.
KEEP RECORDS Keeping track of records before, during, and after calving is important to compare first-calf heifer’s performance throughout the year. Using these records throughout the year can be helpful in making sure she is going down the right path to successfully join the cow herd. Make sure to evaluate pre/post-calving health, calving performance, and nutrition.
HEALTH • Reduce contaminants At the beginning of calving season, the barn/pasture is clean which reduces exposure and the opportunity for pathogens to suppress the immune system. Clean pens frequently or utilize the Sandhills Calving System to maintain a clean environment and keep firstcalf heifer pairs healthy. • Post-Calving Monitor first-calf heifers for proper cleaning and passing of the placenta within 12 hours post-calving. Retained placentas, uterine prolapses, uterine infections, or lacerations may occur and cause her discomfort and sickness. These problems may also lead to breeding problems down the road.
CALVING PERFORMANCE • Calving difficulty How did she perform through her first calving? Did she have any difficulty? It is estimated that 11% of first-calf heifers experience calving difficulties which can negatively affect the postpartum interval and next season pregnancy rates due to additional stress and uterine damage. • Colostrum/ Milk Production Does the heifer have a signs of good milk production? THE STOCKMAN | stockmanmag.com
The first milk, colostrum, which is highly concentrated in antibodies or immunoglobulins such as IgG is the first thing newborn calves need to receive within 12 to 24 hours after birth. This provides them passive immunity as antibodies from the dam are transferred through colostrum and not the placenta during gestation. Beef cattle colostrum is highly concentrated with IgG, so make sure calves attempt to suck within the first hours after birth. If first-calf heifers do not appear to have much colostrum or milk, it is recommended that beef calves receive a colostrum replacer or supplement depending on how much they received from
the dam. If heifers don’t have enough milk to raise a calf, it should be recorded in the calving book and determined if she should be bred or culled.
NUTRITION • Body Condition Score (BCS) First-calf heifers should be at a BCS of 6 at calving. Since heifers are only 85% of mature weight at calving, this will provide her adequate nutrients for her continued growth, while also allowing her to meet needs of lactation and resumption of estrous cycles prior to breeding. - Too Fat – Heifers with BCS greater than 6 may have impaired milk production and

heifers do experience dystocia, assistance should be provided after 30 minutes during stage 2 labor. In addition, a calving ease score from 1-5 (1 = no assistance, 2 = easy assistance, 3 = difficult assistance, 4 = cesarean, 5 = breach abnormal presentation; Adapted from American Hereford Association) can be documented in the calving book. If heifers had a difficult calving or required assistance, try preparing her for breeding using a progestin-based reproductive technology (CIDR) to boost resumption of her hormones and fertile estrous cycle.

increased incidence of dystocia, due to extra fat deposition in the udder and around the pelvis, respectively. These heifers can stand to lose some weight after calving, but it’s important to have her back on an positive plane of nutrition prior to breeding season to achieve early breed back. - Too Thin – If heifers are too thin, extra energy will need to be supplemented for her to meet nutrient demands for lactation, growth, maintenance, and lastly, reproduction. Thin heifers will likely have a longer postpartum interval
which may lead to devastating profit losses if they get culled due to late or failure to breed back within the desired calving interval. Condition should be added to thin heifers prior to calving by supplementing with high quality feedstuffs. It is more cost-effective to supplement prior to calving than after lactation begins. To avoid overfeeding the whole herd, separate first-calf heifers and other thin cows into a different pen so they will have sole access to the extra energy. Body condition can be added postpartum, but it will be more difficult and very expen-
sive due to her high nutrient demands for lactation. Frequent observation of first-calf heifers and good record-keeping around calving will give producers insight into which heifers are going to breed back and others that might need some extra TLC. Remember that these heifers are the newest assets of the ranch, and it’s important to keep them healthy through their first calving to give them the best chance of breeding back and entering into the mature cow herd.

THE CULTURE OF CUSTOMER SERVICE
Bull sale season is in full swing, especially across the Central and Northern Plains. Yet, no matter what month you select to have your bull sale or a production sale there is one component that should be part of your business all year – customer service.
genetic supplier, annually selling registered bulls and females into registered and commercial beef herds.
When we are in the customer role, we expect professional, helpful, high-quality service, so why would we expect our customers, who aid in providing our livelihood, to have any lower expectations? Each year, bull buyers are looking for the right bull to match their cowherd. Whether they are looking for a bull with specific genetic bloodlines, have certain EPD numbers in mind or want the bull to tip the scale carrying lots of meat and muscle, delivering customer service along with your product will set you apart from others. Great customer service and respect for your customers demonstrates your foresight as a leader.
For simplicity sake, I will refer to my friend as “Lisa”. A couple years ago, at Lisa’s annual bull sale, the top-selling bull sold to a brand-new customer. The customer was slightly familiar with

A Little Step Made a Big Difference
Lisa’s breeding program, seeing a few heifers sell at a consignment sale the year prior but conducted further research online and studied their catalog before deciding to purchase a bull. Lisa and her family were excited to add a new customer to their portfolio. However, this new buyer lived more than 700 miles away, so an afternoon drive to deliver the bull or have a short visit was not feasible. To get to know this new customer, it was going to take extra time and devotion. As summer rolled around, Lisa
realized she would be traveling near this new customer’s ranch. She made it a priority to fit in a visit. She toured the 200 head commercial cowherd and was interested to see how the bull had progressed over the past four months. Later, over a steak supper and lots of cattle business talk, Lisa was shocked when the bull customer stated, ‘how thankful he and his wife were that Lisa took time away from her family and her ranch, to show such interest in their program.’ He went on to say, “we have been in the cattle business for more than 20 years, and you are the very first person we have ever bought a bull from that has ever come to visit us, to see our cattle, and follow up on our purchase.” Lisa was shocked. She could hardly believe it. She herself has raised beef cattle for more than 30 years and could not imagine having someone not show interest in her family’s ranching program, especially after the purchase of cattle — how disheartening she

Another young couple in the seedstock business who are friends of mine, mail their bull buyers homemade cookies or cakes each Christmas. This young couple have not only developed a unique way to say thank you to their customers, but they also clearly demonstrate it. I’ve been thinking it’s time to round up some extra money to purchase a bull from them just to get some of their tasty homemade goodies. Ways to create customer service:
1) Conduc t evalua tion How would you rate your level of customer service: very good,
good, not good or poor. If you are not able to document why you rated yourself in the top two categories, then you need to reevaluate your ranch’s customer service goals. What are you missing? Is there just one or two more steps you need to push your business into the top categories? Did you call all your bull customers last year to follow up with them after their purchase or just 50% of them?
2) Know expec ta tions
Have a plan in place to deal with issues before they arise. Often, customers become friends in the cattle industry which can make it more challenging to deal with a situation should it arise if you don’t have a plan in place. A refund policy or guarantee known ahead of time will diffuse the ten-
sion and aid in resolving the issue. Be fair, realistic, and work to keep business professional.
3) Be equipped
You may have the best cattle in the industry, but if you do a poor job in customer service, such as communicating with the buyer, getting paperwork done in a timely manner, answering their questions, returning phone calls, etc., your ability to deliver quality will slip away. Research shows a dissatisfied customer tells some 20 or more people about a bad experience. Don’t give a customer the chance to change his mind and go somewhere else. Customer service should be a culture that permeates throughout your business each day and across each step you make to market your cattle and meet the needs of current and future customers.

breeding Charolais since 1962, when their first Charolais bull was purchased. The purebred herd was expanded when Tom was in 4-H and FFA in the early 70s, and in 1979, he began managing the Tri R Cattle Company Charolais. Sonderup Charolais purchased 100 females from Bauman Ranch in 1977 creating a herd of nearly 250 females.

In 1990, Tom and his wife Sandy took over management of the cowherd and formed Sonderup
Charolais Ranch, Inc. Their four daughters, Kelly, Jamie, Tracy and Heidi, have all been involved in the operation. At Sonderup Charolais Ranch, Inc. (SCR), the highest emphasis has always been placed on numbers. They have been collecting and reporting performance data on every calf since the 70s. The Redman Linear Measurement System has been used since 1981 to improve performance, feed efficiency, carcass quality, and reproduction. This system has proven to be the best guide to
improve economically important traits. Over 80 percent of their bull customers retain ownership of their calves to slaughter. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why they have collected ultrasound data for 28 years â&#x20AC;&#x201C; their customers buy ribeye and marbling. They have bred cows and heifers using AI for several generations. Ninety percent of the bulls used in the AI program have been produced on the ranch. have started using embryo transfer to multiply the genetics of top cows and sell sale-topping herd sires. SCR has built sales with cooperator herds for nearly 20 years. Most of the cooperators have SCR females and/or use SCR sires AI or as clean-up bulls. SCR then will feed, develop, evaluate, sell, test, and deliver all the cooperator bulls that qualify. Often, several of the bulls selling in the annual bull sale go back to the cooperators as herd bulls to build their programs. The majority of the bulls are marketed in the bull sale, but bulls have been sold at Denver, Sioux Empire, American Royal, Nebraska Charolais Association Bull Sales, and the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. Over the years, SCR has sent cattle to 41 states and three foreign countries. Tom does some consulting on most of the satellite herds, commercial

________ herds, and registered herds of other breeds. He also helps other breeders buy or sell their seedstock or find and select replacements for their herds. In 1991, Sonderup Charolais Ranch, Inc was selected as Seedstock Producer of the Year by the American-International Charolais Association. In 2011, Sonderup Charolais Ranch,

SCR does exhibit and show at a few events each year. They have shown at the Nebraska State Fair nearly every year since 1970 and exhibited at the National Western Stock Show in Denver for 43 years in the yards. They won a banner five times during that time but have sold over $5 million worth of cattle to people they first met in Denver. The Sonderup girls showed at 18 Junior National Charolais Shows across the country from 1991 through 2008. In 2010, Tom was approached by several Nebraska State Fair Board members to

A few years ago, Tom (along with several others) purchased the US semen rights to High Bluff Casanova 13C, bred by High Bluff
Stock Farm in Canada. Casanova measured right and had the benefit of being a total outcross to SCR genetics. Last year, SCR Casanova 7107 topped the annual bull sale at $62,500, breaking all previous sale records. Tom and Sandy would like to thank their purebred and commercial customers for all their support. Co-founders, Lance Ellsworth and Carl Newbrough, had worked together for a few years under the employment umbrella of Semex, after Semex had purchased two of the three Genetic Horizons divisions in 1999. Lance was the Semex Beef Program Manager and got his start in the AI business in the mid 90s with Alta Genetics. Carl started working in the AI industry in the 60s and founded an AI school in central Missouri while being an integral part of Genetic Horizons
and Semex. Both Lance and Carl were continually frustrated at how beef seemed to be an afterthought to dairy programs and subsequently founded Cattle Visions. Despite 40 years of age difference, both Lance & Carl shared the goal of helping the beef industry become better through their emphasis on customer service. A key contributor to the success of Cattle Visions was the office management expertise of Patty Helmka who had worked with Carl at Genetic Horizons for many years. In addition, Lance credits much of their success
to their web-designer, Ed Tlach, who helped the company become one of the most technologically-advanced in the industry. Once Cattle Visions had gained recognition for its efforts and accomplishments, they acquired Angus Semen Service and Shorthorn Shop, two similar breed-focused independent semen sales companies. DO I REALLY WANT TO REUSE THAT CIDR? Another question we get asked about a lot is, â&#x20AC;&#x153;can I reuse CIDRS Doc?â&#x20AC;? The simple answer is yes, they will work for a second time. But, there is much more to consider. I will be the first to agree that CIDRS are expensive, but a producer has to really consider what they put at risk vs the cost of half a CIDR. 1) What are the risks of transferring a disease or causing a vaginal infection from a used CIDR? For this one issue alone we never recommend that a producer re-uses a CIDR. Diseases have a funny way of showing up when we give them opportunities to hitch a ride on some type of vector, leading to disease issues. Even environ-
mental bacteria and funguses from manure and barn dust can get into a CIDR if they are allowed to sit out after pulling them from the first use.
2) Do I have the labor and time to properly clean and disinfect a batch of used CIDRS before they get reused? In our opinion, breeding season is a busy time of year that also coincides with a lot of crop and hay work. To properly scrub off each CIDR, disinfect them and get them dried takes time which may be better

3) Can I keep good enough records to keep track of which CIDRS are first time use and which ones are used a second time at the time they are removed from a cow? If you accidentally would be using a CIDR for the third time, there are side effects such as having cows break into heat while the CIDR is in use. Another side effect is that cows will be more prone to develop cystic ovaries due to suboptimal levels of progesterone.
But in our opinion, there is no better way to incorporate the use of fixed time AI or a combination of heat detection with timed AI unless you use a CIDR.
These three points are the main reasons we do not re-use or recommend the reuse of CIDRS. There is too much at stake in most herds. The high value of the pregnancies and the time lost in cows that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get pregnant can
These are the things we recommend for best results when using CIDRS: 1) Start the new breeding season with a new CIDR applicator. These applicators can harbor a lot of bacteria and can be hard to clean. We feel itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best to change applicators at the beginning of the season. 2) Wear rubber gloves anytime you handle CIDRS. They need to be handled with caution like any other chemical or insecticide. The progesterone that is
impregnated in the CIDR will be adsorbed through your skin the same way it is adsorbed by the cow. 3) Have a clean bucket of water with Nolvasan disinfectant chute side when inserting CIDRS so the applicator can be cleaned between cows. Also have a way to clean the vulva of the cow prior to inserting the CIDR. 4) Lubricate the CIDR and applicator prior to inserting into the cow. We use chloralube for this and feel it reduces the incidence of vaginitis caused by CIDRS. Overall CIDRS are a great tool for synchronizing cows, but are probably best if used once. learn more collisionembryo.com

IS IT SPRING YET? It’s been a winter of work. I’m trying to be polite when talking about the weather we’ve had this fall and winter. Hello, Stockman readers, this is Bryce Wright from Knoxville Regional Livestock Market in Iowa. One thing I know: a cowman or cowwoman has had to work harder than I can remember in sometime. Livestock in general has had to work harder than they’ve had to in sometime.
that just won’t give so many of us a break. The extreme conditions are taking a toll on cattle now. It’s been extra difficult for me to get out and see cattle this winter. Calves that I looked at 2-3 weeks ago have gone backwards from the amount of stress they have endured. I think producers are seeing that with the weights of cattle. Many of my customer’s calves have been 75 to 125 pounds lighter than in years past. It’s been such an uphill battle trying to put weight on calves in this cold. Cattle have really just been trying to maintain.

Now I know that I’ve only been around this world for 35 years, so I haven’t experienced everything, but as long as I can remember I’ve never gone through a fall and winter
like we have been experiencing in 2018-2019. Starting in September, the rain didn’t want to shut off after we couldn’t buy a rain all summer! The ultra wet September made weaning a struggle for cattlemen. Mud was playing a huge factor in the health of calves. Not only was it hurting the cattle, but it also made it extremely difficult for farmers to put up cornstalks, and we are seeing the effect of that now with calving upon many of us. We have gone from one extreme to another, from the heat and drought this past summer to rain and mud this fall, to the harsh cold and snow

I’d say the biggest impact of these extreme conditions has been on cows. Since the beginning of January, the breds that have come through the sale barn have done a 180 in their conditioning since the fall. To add insult to injury, the shortage of feed is becoming apparent in elevated cost and lack of availability. All of this is contributing to the current market on bred cows. Producers are disappointed with what their heifers and young bred cows have been bringing. I believe if you have the feed and space there is a lot of opportunity here! The feeder calf market has not been as negatively impacted so far with their market holding steady.
I know it’s hard to find any good out of all that we have encountered over the last 5 months, but I always search for the silver lining. With all the moisture we have received, its refilled ponds to the fullest they’ve been in some time, and we’ve got a huge amount of moisture in the ground. The wet spring and early summer will make for an impressive first cutting of hay and should provide a huge boost in grazing grass. March is upon us. I can see spring on the horizon. The sun will shine, and it will warm up. I keep saying, this has to end soon! Try to stay positive out there. Things will get better.

In the News HONORED BREEDER OF THE IOWA ROYAL SHORTHORN MIKE STUDER Thank you for this dedication of the 2019 Iowa Royal. I have seen many great people chosen for this honor in previous years. I started this dedication process when I was the president of the Iowa Shorthorn Association and the first dedication given was to my grandfather Ben G. Studer. Since that time, my brothers Richard and Dale have also received this honor. I am a Vietnam era veteran. After returning home from the service I above Mike & Deb Studer served on the Iowa Shorthorn board for 12 years; serving as President 3 of those years. We had 200 members in the Iowa Shorthorn Association in a single year at that time. For many years, I was an Iowa delegate for our National Shorthorn Association’s annual meeting. In my younger years, I judged numerous state shows and county fairs. Also, I did quite a bit of showing cattle at the state and national level and had the national champion bull “MTS Special Effect” in 1994. I have shown numerous champions over the years including at the Iowa Royal where I had many top sellers - too many to mention.

Raising Purebred cattle is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. We are always planning 4-5 years down the road when dealing with beef genetics.”
Describe your BEST day on the farm.
“
Another easy question for me, any day the grandkids are around helping Marsha and I is a great day!!”
“
CRSL Roxie 5050R. She was the first National Champion we ever showed and was a day I can still tell you every detail about. She also went on to produce National Champion females and bulls for us. Her influence is still widely seen throughout our Limousin cow herd today!”
Your favorite non-farm activity?
“
We are involved in our church and enjoy the fellowship. Also we feel it is very important to be involved in our local community, and have served on many boards and enjoy helping our community grow. 4-H has had a great impact on our family and we try to give back to it anyway we can.”

Working with genetics and always striving to create a better beef animal. As well as, the friendships we have made with other people across the country.”
What is your least favorite job on the farm?
“
Estate Planning.”

Marsha and I are celebrating our 40th year together selling purebred seedstock. We started with Limousin cattle and today the herd consists of 80% Angus cattle and 20% Lim-Flex cattle. We are blessed to have two of our sons, Cash and Clay, and their families, with us on the farm. Our other son, Chance, is an Ag banker in Nebraska.”
