while mom is away.
The Stockman team had a trade show booth set up at the Iowa Beef Expo in February, and I was able to attend for a couple of days. I decided to bring my oldest daughter with me for a traveling buddy, so we left together for a weekend girls/business trip. My husband had called the first morning we were gone looking for the key to the front door of the house. Someone forgot to unlock it on their way out the door, and our spare key was in my vehicle six hours away, so I gave Jared about four different options to check for the second spare key in the garage. Without any luck in finding it, he decided he would have to break the door handle to get himself and the rest of the kids back inside the house. Then the following day, I got a text from Jared that said he had all the candles lit in the house because they had burnt the popcorn the night before, and the house would not let go of the stench! And when he said it was burnt, he meant it - the pan was sitting outside of the house when we got home and it was all black and tarnished! We are on day five of the aftermath of stink and I can finally say the smell is out of the house. Whew, that was smelly! Does anyone else out there find havoc unraveling when your wife is gone for a couple of days? I by no means am solely responsible for keeping everything at peace when I’m home, but it’s fun to lightly joke and laugh about the mishaps. At least no one got hurt so that’s the main thing. It will just take me some time to get my popcorn pan shined up again, ha! Still looking for your next herd bull or wanting to add some females to your herd? This issue is full of upcoming production sales, so take some time to study the offerings in the following pages. We hope you enjoy our feature stories and articles this month as well. If there’s anything we can do to assist you in marketing your livestock, please let us know how we can help. Until then, happy calving!

BETTER Together
By Cheryl Kepes photos courtesy I-29 Bull Run
Producers team up to create a production sale that has morphed into an annual South Dakota happening.
T
en years ago, a casual conversation between cattle producers at the South Dakota State Fair about ways to better market their cattle, turned into a long-running partnership. “Most of us partners at the time didn’t have enough cattle to host our own sales. It’s a big undertaking to take on an event like that. And so, we thought, ‘Why not do it together?’” Phil Eggers with Eggers Southview Farms recalled. So, they did. Together the breeders created a successful production sale comprised of genetics from all their herds. The original families formed an entity called I-29 Bull Run, giving them the ability to act as a formal marketing company. The South Dakota breeders involved with the I-29 Bull Run sale live (as one might guess) along the I-29 Interstate corridor. 18
March 2024 | THE STOCKMAN
The sale has grown and evolved since its beginnings. The I-29 Bull Run sale, held the second Saturday in March, offers elite Hereford, Angus, and Simmental bulls, as well as registered and commercial females. The partners include Section 16 Cattle Company, Mark Family Simmental, Eggers Southview Farms, and TSR Cattle Company.
SHARING RESPONSIBILITY Coordinating a large sale with a lot of cooks in the kitchen, so to speak, might be problematic for some folks, but not for these families. The years of close collaboration and a unified goal makes all aspects of the sale run well. One of the benefits to the collaboration is the value each producer adds from his or her own unique THE STOCKMAN | March 2024
skill set in planning and executing the sale. “It is really nice because everyone has their own job in regard to the event. It is amazing how smooth is goes with a little bit of coordination within the group,” Phil explained. The producers involved in the I-29 Bull Run sale hold full-time jobs off their cattle operations making excellent organization key. “We are all in production agriculture, but a majority of us have another business or something else going on in addition to that. So, our time is limited, and we just try to be as efficient as possible and I think that we are,” Phil said. “It is really important to keep communication open in a big group like this and everyone does a good job of that in regard to what they are doing.” 19
OFFERING VARIETY The I-29 Bull Run sale prides itself in offering customers a variety of genetics. The sale includes multiple breeds, bulls of various ages, and registered and commercial females. In the beginning, the sale focused on Hereford bulls with a few Hereford heifers as well as some Angus bulls. Now, the sale includes far more Angus bulls and females, Simmentals, and occasionally Balancer bulls.
The partners hope their sale lineup aligns with what their fellow cattlemen and women need for their operations. “We all have our core customers. But it is really nice that if we don’t have something to offer our contacts, there is something else there so everyone is always taken care of which is always the goal,” Phil said.
INVOLVING CUSTOMERS In recent years, the I-29 Bull Run sale implemented a new feature – commercial females. I-29 Bull Run customers can now market their commercial females at the sale. The new sale offering stems from the sale organizers’ goal of helping their customers market their calves.
Another change from the early years of the sale is the range of ages of bulls offered. The breeders market yearlings, fall yearlings, and two-year-olds. The diversified selection plays to the needs of the sale’s customers. Some customers purchase animals from different breeds and bulls of varying ages. “It is amazing the number of people who buy multiple breeds and multiple ages,” Phil added. 20
March 2024 | THE STOCKMAN
The sale partners know well the value of finding new and different avenues for marketing cattle and they want to pass that on to their customers. “We want to see everyone succeed. It is a small thing we can do to add a big impact,” Phil stated.
MAKING IT AN EVENT From its inception, the sale partners set out to create a sale that feels like an exciting event. The I-29 Bull Run sale is held at the Sioux Falls fairgrounds in the evening on a Saturday. “I am glad my partners were forward thinking enough to offer a night sale and something fun,” Phil said. “It is not like your typical bull sale where it is get in and pick it and get back home and get to work. It feels more relaxed.” The sale is moving into its tenth year and counting. As the next sale
approaches the families involved reflect on where they have been and where they would like to go in the future. But most of all, their thoughts center on gratitude for their collaboration. “We are real-
ly fortunate that we can do this all together. And we all realize how lucky we are to have such a successful event,” Phil shared. learn more i29bullrun.com

Rick Rasby, Nebraska Extension Specialist Kacie McCarthy, UNL Cow-Calf Specialist beef.unl.edu
HOW TO USE NIGHT FEEDING TO INCREASE DAYTIME CALVING A
simple management strategy - feeding cows at dusk - could increase the number of calves born during the day. It’s easier to watch cattle and see if intervention is necessary while it’s light out. Producers can also keep an eye on calves and make sure they’re getting a healthy start during the day when it’s warmer and easier to manage both cows and calves. To program beef females so the majority calve during the day, begin feeding at dusk two to three weeks before the start of the calving season.
Several data sets support that feeding pregnant cows at dusk will increase the number of cows calving during the daytime. In Canadian and British studies, feeding later in the day resulted in 79% of the cows calving during the daytime. In field trials by cattlemen when cows and heifers were fed once daily between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., 74.5% of the calves were born between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m. In the most convincing study, 1,331 cows on 15 farms in Iowa, cows were fed once daily at
dusk and 85% of the calves were born between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Calving time is a labor-intensive and stressful time for producers, so having more cows calve during the daylight hours can reduce the stress on the calving crew. Courtesy University of NE - Lincoln, UNL Beef
Interviews with the authors of BeefWatch newsletter articles become available throughout the month of publication and are accessible at: www.go.unl.edu/podcast.
We aren’t sure exactly what triggers a cow to calve, but it likely has a hormonal connection. Studies have shown that rumen contractions increase in frequency just after feeding, but slow down a few hours before a cow starts to calve. Pressure in the rumen drops during the last two weeks of gestation and declines faster during calving, indicating calving is triggered when rumen pressure is lower. Feeding at night may cause this pressure to rise at night and decline in the daytime, which has been suggested to be part of the reason night-feeding increases instances of day-calving.

Cattle Industry
The Schilling family, Edson, Kan., is committed to expanding and improving their Angus-Limousin herd. Family. Tradition. Dedication.
Legacy. Those words can easily describe Schilling Cattle located in Edson, Kan. Owners Ron and Marsha Schilling are proud to see their grandchildren - the seventh generation - involved in the family cattle operation.
AGRICULTURAL ROOTS The farm was passed down through Marsha’s paternal grandmother’s side of the family and was originally homesteaded in 1886. When Marsha’s parents, Jesse and Doris Craft, started farming the land, they had purchased some additional acres that they couldn’t farm in the 1950s. Jesse decided to buy 150 Hereford cows to run on that land - and a beef herd was established. Ron’s parents moved to Sherman County in the 1960s, as his father was the county extension agent. Ron started his own herd of cattle in the 1970s as a 4-H project. Marsha began raising Limousin cattle as a 4-H project. Her family bought some Limousin heifers from the Woodard 40

family in Agate, Colo., and Jesse bred Limousin bulls to his Hereford cows. Ron and Marsha married in 1979 and began their farming journey in 1981 after graduating from Kansas State University. The couple THE STOCKMAN | March 2024
has three sons. Cash and his wife, Amanda, live in Goodland, Kan., and Cash manages the Goodland division of Nutrien and helps with the farm as much as he can. Chance lives in Omaha and assists with marketing in addition to his day job at FNBO Bank. Clay and his wife, Kaycie, have their own thriving operation.
SHOW RING SUCCESS Their grandchildren, especially Cash’s daughter Kaelyn, are all involved in showing cattle. Kaelyn is only a freshman in high school but has traveled quite a bit and been very successful in the show ring. She won the 2023 Kansas Angus Futurity show with a homegrown 41
Last year, Ron and Marsha were inducted in the Wall of Honor at the Kansas State Fair, recognizing the couple’s commitment to the livestock industry. “We were very humbled by the honor,” Ron said. heifer and has her own herd of show heifers. Grandson, Chasyn, is just starting out with his showing career as a first grader. Clay’s children, Cogan and Kambrie, are just getting started with showing cattle, too. Cogan attended his first Limousin Junior Nationals this past summer. Over the years, the family has had several big wins at major cattle shows. They’ve raised multiple Limousin bulls and heifers that won honors at the National Western Stock Show in Denver. One year, they had a heifer that won the National Junior Limousin Show. They’ve also exhibited cattle at the American Royal in Kansas City, the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, and many state shows in Kansas.

GETTING INTO ANGUS In 2012, the Schillings bought Angus cattle and began transitioning their herd to around 80 percent Angus, with the balance remaining Limousin. The Schilling family pushes EPDs and genomics with their cattle. “We really like Limousin cattle, but it got really hard to sell bulls,” Ron said. “A lot of guys were switching to Angus bulls and crossing to make Lim-Flex, so we figured we might as well have some Angus cows, too.” The operation hosted 17 production sales selling Limousin cattle in the 1980s and ‘90s. After starting their Angus herd, the family resumed hosting their annual production sale. This year is the eighth
sale since they brought it back. The sale will offer about 50 bulls and 25 registered females. “Our goal is to breed a well-balanced animal that’s structurally correct and sound, while pushing maternal traits,” Ron said. “We want to produce high-quality bulls for our customers’ own herds.” The Schilling family has implemented bulls such as G A R Home Town, DB Iconic G95, Ellingson Badlands 0285, and Poss Ratified into their breeding program, and Ron said they’re really liking the calves they’re seeing. “We use an extensive AI program and also use ET quite a bit,” Ron said. “We run our own cleanup bulls. Cows calve from the end of January through April 1.”
March 2024 | THE STOCKMAN
Calves are weaned around September 1, and bulls for the sale are sorted off. Family neighbor Lowell Carpenter manages bull development and the replacement heifers, and Ron said he does a great job. Any remaining calves are then sold through Superior or fed until the market hits where the Schillings are ready to sell.
The Schillings hope that their grandchildren will take over the operation someday. With all of the grandkids already showing an interest in showing cattle, it’s certainly a possibility. learn more facebook.com/schillingcattle
“We’re trying to be more visible on Facebook, as social media seems to be working better for us,” Ron said.
EXPANDING THE OPERATION The Schillings continue expanding their operation with additional acres. Ron said the operation currently has enough grass to run about 400 cows, although drought has influenced that number to some extent. The family also raises irrigated corn and milo and dryland wheat and corn. Some of the corn is used to feed the cattle, in addition to hay. The cattle mostly graze on native grasses on a property south of the main home place from April through November 1. After that, the herd grazes cornstalks until mid-January. The females are fed hay and dried distiller’s grain cubes until April, when the cycle starts all over.

Seeds in Season
Functional forage and pasture.

APPLYING THE PRINCIPLES OF SOIL HEALTH How soil health can fit into your annual grazing plan.
T
hroughout January and February, I’m certain you could have attended a conference focused on soil health every week in the Midwest. The focus on soil has never been greater, and the emphasis is coming from farmer led associations, industry affiliations, NGOs (nonprofit organizations), and government agencies alike. This has been a very positive movement, ultimately letting landowners choose their involvement, while also incentivizing their activity. As livestock producers we seem to have the upper 52
hand when it comes to soil health and creating a diversified, circular system. When I think about how soil health pays, I think about building organic matter, increasing water holding capacity, and building biological activity. All three of these are results from the basic principles of soil health which are: soil armor, minimize soil disturbance, plant diversity, continuous living roots, and livestock integration. So how do we build out forage harvest plans while building soil health?
INCORPORATING PERENNIALS The most effective opportunity we have is to incorporate perennials into our farming rotations. Utilizing alfalfa in conjunction with perennial grasses and other legumes gives us plant diversity, continuous living roots, and soil armor – and we don’t disturb the soil while it’s in production. To achieve a diverse stand, add persistent good quality grasses such as orchardgrass, tall forage fescue, timothy, or pubescent wheatMarch 2024 | THE STOCKMAN
grass. Along with alfalfa, there are perennial legumes like sainfoin, milkvetch, or birdsfoot trefoil that make great hay. This long-lived stand will have multiple layers of root channels that increase water infiltration and a root mass that stays in the soil to build organic matter levels. As this stand fades at the end of its life, the plant diversity will allow you to graze with little bloat risk and give your soil biology the benefit from livestock integration and manure distribution.
INCORPORATING ANNUALS In an annual forage system, hold the same principles in mind when creating a harvestable feed. As a spring planted option, a blend of forage peas in conjunction with forage oats, triticale, and forage barley will yield three to four tons per acre of dry matter by early July. Since you’ll harvest all of that grown forage from the field, I’d recommend coming back into that field as soon as possible with a cover crop focused on grazing.
Summer annuals with heat and drought tolerance should be the base of the mix, which would include grasses like pearl millet, sorghum and sudangrass hybrids, and teff or forage crabgrass. Grass species have a higher carbon to nitrogen ratio than broadleaves and are a key component to maintain soil armor and build residue to create additional organic matter. Warm season legumes rated good for grazing that need to be added for nitrogen fixation would be cow peas, forage soybeans, and dry beans. The other great grazing broadleaf that also adds diversity is sunflowers. Lastly, think about incorporating a brassica species to the blend for quality late season grazing and tap roots for an increase of soil pore space. Grazing radishes, forage turnips, and forage collards are the best species in this scenario. The annual forage scenario checks each soil health principle and allows your flexibility with your cash crop farming rotation. Moving this practice to different fields each year begins to strengthen your operation’s production. Consistent harvested forage production and extra grazing acres allows for a more resilient system, while your focus on soil health builds your long-term resiliency – for a farm legacy that lasts for generations to come. Our goal here at Breeder Link continues to be a quest to offer the kind of bulls that will give you the foundation you can build a herd around, that will keep you profitable long into the future. When you examine the multiple genetic traits that we have at our disposal we still think that fertility and Longevity are the biggest economic drivers for the cow-calf producer. We think that strong cow families with generations of proven cows that have bred back on time for many years and raised an above average calf are still one of the best indicators for future maternal excellence.

Landgren Ranch relies on a multifaceted operation to meet customers’ needs. PUREBRED HEREFORD HERD
above Landgren Ranch herdsman, Reed Parker, with his wife Abi and family.
DIVERSE OPERATIONS Mark and Julie Landgren, along with their son, Matt, operate the diverse business consisting of a registered Hereford and commercial herd, as well as a club calf and show heifer venture. Four-generations of the Landgren family have dedicated their lives to operating Landgren Ranch located in Bartlett, Neb. The ranch’s herdsmen, Reed Parker, also plays an instrumental role on the cattle operation.
he innerworkings of Landgren Ranch are uniquely diverse. So much so, parts of the business operate as if separate entities. Yet in the differences, there is a common thread binding each segment into one viable operation. “It is diversified, but it all works together too. Good cattle are good cattle is the way I look at it. It is different niches for different customers,” Mark Landgren, owner of Landgren Ranch, explained.
THE STOCKMAN | March 2024
The roots of the Landgrens’ cattle business stem from a commercial cow/calf operation. Mark’s great-grandfather started the ranch in the early-1900s. Later generations of the Landgren family added registered Hereford cattle to the operation. “My grandpa had registered Herefords and sold bulls and then we kind of moved away from it and I had always wanted to do that and so I got back into it 15 to 20 years ago. I really like that part of it,” Mark shared.
The Landgrens kickstarted their return to the seedstock business with the purchase of purebred Hereford genetics from Brent and Robin Meeks, owners of Upstream Ranch. Through the years, the Landgren family has built its genetics and reputation in the purebred Hereford industry. The registered side of the operation consists of approximately 100 Hereford cows, 10 donor cows, and an extensive embryo transfer (ET) program. “Our top cows are good donor cows. We do quite a bit of embryo work because we feel they are really good cows,” Mark added. Through their ET program, they implant 75 purebred Hereford embryos in recipients each year. The ET calves are future herd bulls, champion show bulls and heifers, and topnotch replacement females. The desire to improve their herd’s genetics extends to other management practices. The Landgrens AI their registered cow herd for a full cycle and then send in quality, cleanup bulls. below Matt and Jenna Landgren family.
61
PUREBRED FOCUS The primary focus of Landgren Ranch’s registered Hereford herd is producing bulls for their commercial customers. The family seeks to utilize balanced trait selection. That means making breeding decisions that emphasize structural integrity, fleshing ability, and profitability. Many of the ranch’s purebred Hereford bulls are purchased by commercial producers with Angus herds who are looking to produce black baldie calves. The Landgrens take care in selecting genetics that reflect the traits desired by commercial producers. “Growth and carcass are some of our biggest priorities. We want calves to grow well and feed well too,” Mark said. Though Landgren Ranch encompasses a variety of niches in the cattle industry, the heart of the
operation centers on the needs of commercial producers. “We are commercial cattlemen; that’s why I think we like to go towards the commercial cattlemen to sell bulls to them because we originated as commercial cattlemen,” Mark stated. “So, we know what works in our operation and we hope to do that in other people’s operations.” The driving factors in their genetic selections and breeding programs start and end with the commercial producers in mind. “I understand a typical rancher, he just needs the bottom line to be profitable. You want to try to raise bulls that put pounds on their calves, and they can make a profit off of the calves,” Mark said. “That’s how we have always looked at it and if we aren’t producing bulls that do that, then we are not doing something right.”
SHOW BUSINESS The Landgren family campaigns bulls at the Northwestern Stock Show (NWSS) each year with much success. They have earned Hereford grand champion carload of bulls numerous times. Many of the heifers raised at the ranch go to new owners and are also highly competitive in the show ring. The Hereford show heifer prospects are sold in Landgren Ranch’s online sale every November. Additionally, Landgren Ranch implants 25 embryos each year to produce show steers. Mark and Julie started producing and selling show steers decades ago when their children were interested in competing on the show circuit. The family hosts an online show steer sale each year in October.

March 2024 | THE STOCKMAN
COMMERCIAL HERD The commercial side of the operation consists of approximately 300 commercial cows. The commercial herd is made up of Angus cows bred by purebred Hereford bulls, or Hereford cows bred by Angus bulls. The family appreciates the heterosis of the F1 cross. “There are two main British breeds that are left that haven’t crossed up with something else and that’s the Hereford and Angus. The only true way to get good heterosis is a first cross like that,” Mark stated. All the Landgren’s herds calve in the spring. After weaning the commercial calves, the family backgrounds the calves until January and then sells them directly to feedlots. The operation appreciates the consistent market demand for black baldies. The Landgrens’ point to extra performance, growth, as well as bone structure and muscle pattern, as traits the Hereford breed infuses into its progeny. “I think the Hereford breed is coming on good and a lot of people are wanting to use the Hereford bulls on black cows. It’s a good cross and I think you are going to see more of them down the road,” Mark explained.
NEW MARKETING PLATFORM The growing demand for Hereford bulls and the continued success of the ranch’s operation prompted the Landgren’s to have an online sale on March 18, 2024, for their registered Hereford bulls. This is the first year for the operation to hold an online bull sale, up to this point Landgren Ranch has sold its bulls exclusively by private treaty. The March sale will also feature 40 replacement heifers sold in groups of five. The heifers will be black baldies, Red Angus/Hereford cross baldies, and commercial Hereford heifers. The family looks forward to this new avenue to market their Hereford genetics. They attribute their ongoing success to the variety of marketing opportunities they have created through their diverse operation. learn more facebook.com/landgrenranch

Health & Reproduction questions answered and explained.
contributed article by Dr. Vince Collison Collison Embryo and Veterinary Services, Rockwell City, Iowa collisonembryoservices.com
WHAT IS PERSISTENT BVD? A
s the spring bull sale season starts, I have been asked about BVD several times. Many of the sales are advertising that all bulls have been tested negative for BVD. One client was asking me if that is something he needed to be doing for his herd. What these herds are testing for is persistent (PI) BVD infection, which is different from just an infection from BVD.
BVD NATURAL INFECTION When a feeder calf becomes infected with BVD, this is a natural infection from BVD circulating within the herd. When we vaccinate with a 5-way modified live viral vaccine in our preconditioning programs, this is the type of infection we are trying to prevent. If the calf does become infected, it will build an immune response to fight off the infection and clear the virus from its system. So, any animal that is fed out or sold as breeding stock has the potential to have picked up this type of BVD infection and cleared it. This is not the type of BVD that is typically tested for when someone advertises as tested BVD negative.
70
PERSISTENT BVD Persistent BVD (PI-BVD) infection is what we typically test for when someone wants to advertise as BVD negative. Also, some of the major winter cattle shows want cattle to have a negative BVD test to enter the show and this PI-BVD is what we would be testing for. PI-BVD infection is when a calf is born with the infection. In this scenario, the calf is infected while it is still a fetus in the uterus. When this happens the developing fetus’s immune system does not recognize the infection as a foreign invader to their system. This allows the viral infection to persist after the calf is born. The calf will be infected with BVD for the rest of its natural life because the calf’s immune system never does recognize the BVD virus as an infection. This results in the calf essentially being a Typhoid Mary, but instead, persistently shedding BVD in the environment.
PREVENTION
make sure that the cow is properly vaccinated for BVD before the breeding season and continues to get an annual booster. This needs to be done with a product that is labeled for fetal protection from BVD. There are many products that have this claim, so it is best to work closely with your herd veterinarian to be sure that you are using the right type of vaccine for your herd.
BVD CASE Probably the worst case of PIBVD I have ever diagnosed was in a herd that was procuring infected bottle calves through a cattle trader to foster onto cows that had lost their calves. In this case, the owner had been using a lot of different treatments on nursing calves for respiratory infections with very poor response. I looked over his diagnostic lab reports and the only thing they had not checked for was PI-BVD. We tested 30 calves out of 130 head and found a 25 percent infection rate in those 30 calves. We immediately
So how do you prevent this from happening? The first thing is to
March 2024 | THE STOCKMAN
vaccinated all the cows with BVD vaccine that had a fetal protection label. The other thing we did is early wean the calves to an offsite premise to prevent exposure to the pregnant cows from the infected calves. The next year, he tested 100 percent of his calves and only had two out of 130 head. These were probably calves that had been infected as fetuses before he weaned the calves and vaccinated the cows. He has continued to test 100 percent of his calves each year and has been free of PI-BVD ever since. This is an extreme case, and we typically only find one in a group. The reason that the major shows want proof of a negative PI-BVD test is to prevent the transmission of BVD to pregnant females that may be at the show.
TESTING
pregnant, the calf may become persistently infected. If a negative cow gives birth to a positive calf, this does not mean she will always have a positive calf in the future. By using a BVD vaccine in the cows with a fetal protection label, you can prevent the fetus from being infected in this scenario. For testing, we typically will use an ear notch preserved in formalin. The lab will run an immunohistochemistry test on this sample. To be accurate, the test needs to be run within seven days of being collected. The other way is to run a capture ELISA test on a serum sample. The ear notch is a cheaper test, but for show animals, we typically run the serum capture ELISA test. We also will use the serum test if we are drawing blood for other testing, such as screening recipients for a panel of diseases.
BVD SIGNS In school, you will learn that PIBVD calves will be unthrifty and rarely make it to adulthood. If they do, they will typically be poor doing. I can tell you from experience that if an animal makes it to adulthood, they will be hard to identify from any of their healthy negative herd mates. Even infected calves will be hard to identify based on if they look unthrifty or not. While I wrote about an extreme case in this article, rest assured that PI-BVD is actually rare to see. But when it shows up, it can cause a multitude of herd health issues. PI-BVD is a complex disease, so work closely with your veterinarian to develop a vaccine program and a biosecurity protocol that works best for your herd so as not to be affected by it. learn more collisonembryoservices.com Dr. Vince Collison is co-owner of Collison Embryo and Veterinary Services PAC in Rockwell City, Iowa.
If someone wants to test their herd, I recommend that they test the entire calf crop. If a calf comes back as negative, it means the dam is automatically negative. This is because any PI-BVD positive females will automatically transmit this to their offspring. Thus, by testing the offspring you automatically are testing the cow herd, and the progeny are also tested negative for any marketing plans or biosecurity reasons. If a calf would happen to test positive, you will want to test the dam. While a positive dam always results in a positive calf, a positive calf can come from a positive or negative dam. If a negative cow is exposed to a regular BVD infection, she will clear the virus herself, but if she is

Two lifelong cattlemen, with decades of experience in the AI industry, startup a unique bull stud business.
L
eaders in the AI industry for most of their lives, business partners Lex Carter and Robert Whitacre know the ins and outs of the bull stud business. For many decades the two have been dedicated to working in the AI industry as well as being active cattlemen in their own operations. The combination of their passion for fellow cattle producers and expertise in beef genetics serves as the foundation for their up-and-coming business, Breeder Link.
Lex and Robert launched Breeder Link in 2020 with the goal of serving cattle producers who may fall off the radar of traditional genetic services companies. Breeder Link aims to promote semen sales for elite Angus sires and to work with commercial and seedstock producers to find the right genetic combinations for their operations. The sires in Breeder Link’s lineup differ from bulls found in many mainstream bull stud offerings – and that’s intentional.
BREEDER LINK BEGINNINGS As teenagers, Lex and Robert both attended AI school in their local communities. Through the years they worked their way up through separate companies within the AI industry. Then, 30 years ago, the two cattlemen’s paths crossed while working together for a genetics services company. Lex and Robert’s experience working for different AI companies opened their eyes to an area in the industry they felt was being overlooked. “What brought us to Breeder Link is that through the years we felt like there were a lot of good breeders getting left behind, in the sense that traditional 78

AI studs weren’t paying any attention to them, maybe because their numbers or EPDs weren’t quite where the traditional studs felt like they needed to be. But we saw value in those cattle,” Robert Whitacre, co-owner of Breeder Link, said. Robert and Lex sought to create a platform to market proven genetics from solid operations with “real-world” type cattle that performed well in their environments. “We felt like the industry had become very terminally focused, it zeroed in on terminal traits. We certainly understand those traits are important and that the industry needs cattle that feed and grade well, but at the same time, we felt like to some extent that sometimes the cow/calf guy gets left behind,” Lex Carter, co-owner of Breeder Link, explained. sometimes chasing the highest EPDs fails to pay off. For example, commercial cattle producers running cattle in difficult environmental conditions may experience a higher percentage of their cows being open if they push too hard genetics focused on milk and growth. “Right now, one of our highest selling bulls is one that is less than 100 on yearling weight, that’s because there are some commercial cattlemen that realize those limitations and they have experienced what happens when they use genetics that are above and beyond what their environment will support,” Lex added. The company promotes a broad array of bulls in hopes of helping customers find the right sires that are adapted to the limitations and strengths of their operation. “We don’t feel like there is any bull out there that’s perfect. They all have strengths, and they all have weaknesses,” Robert said. “The art of cattle breeding is trying to match a bull’s strengths and weakness with the cows they are breeding. We feel there are some very valuable tools out there that we can use in our arsenal that maybe the traditional bull studs would walk away from.”
BRIDGING THE GAP Breeder Link’s owners work to offer genetic solutions for cattle producers needing something different than what the traditional AI companies are offering. The genetics offered by Breeder Link focus on maternal traits such as fertility and longevity as well as attributes unique to an animal’s environment. Though the business partners appreciate and utilize EPDs and genomics (even incorporating the technology in their own herds), 80

LEAN OPERATION Their experience in the AI industry taught them they must keep overhead to a bare minimum if they expect Breeder Link to succeed. That means the two are responsible for everything. They acquire bulls, ship product, coordinate advertising, create the directory, counsel customers, and anything else needed. The duo does it all.
CATTLE PRODUCERS TO THE CORE Both men devoted their careers to different companies in the AI industry working at a variety of levels, but they have always kept their roots in cattle production. Robert and his dad, operate a purebred Angus herd and a commercial herd in Winchester, Virginia. Lex and his brother, Val and Val’s son Colter, manage Carter Cattle Company in Pingree, Idaho. Carter Cattle Company runs a registered Angus herd and a commercial herd.
PROVEN BULLS The majority of the bulls in Breeder Link’s lineup are proven. “The one statement you always need to remember is - the proof is in the proof,” Robert shared. The founders of Breeder Link travel many miles to see the “proof” of potential sires. They want to evaluate a bull’s dam, granddam, siblings, and progeny. THE STOCKMAN | March 2024
Robert and Lex place high value on cow families. The approximate average age of the dams of the sires in Breeder Link’s inventory is 7 to 8 years old. “We want to bring in bulls that are out of cows that have had several calves and bred back on time every year, because we feel like that is a good indicator of fertility,” Lex stated.
Robert and Lex attribute their lives entrenched in the day-to-day operation of their own cattle businesses to their ability to better meet the needs of their Breeder Link customers. The positive feedback on their sire directory and customer service helps fuel their mission. The duo’s next steps include expanding their genetic services to producers in other countries as well as branching out to other breeds. learn more breederlink.com 81

Tell us about yourself.
“
2K Cattle Enterprises was established in 1983 on the family farm that my husband, Kevin, grew up on. We were fortunate to raise three daughters, Keela, Kelsi, and Kelli, who are all still involved in agriculture and Angus cattle. We are excited to host our 26th annual Angus production sale featuring stout Angus bulls and females that are bred or with calves. We continue to use a balanced approach, building our herd with proven genetics. We collect performance data including carcass ultrasound data to enhance carcass quality, while taking advantage of genomics to give our customers the most information we can on sale day. We feature 2K Angus beef at our retail store called The Meat Schoppe in Lancaster, Wis., as well as in our daughter Kelsi’s restaurant, Madison Street Steakhouse & Grill. It is a true farm-to-table experience.

In the News FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2024 FOUNDATION HEIFER AWARD WINNER
above Bernie Bolton, representing Iowa Beef Breeds Council; Khloee Cannon, recipient; and Cary Gilman, Gilman Shorthorns, Stuart, Iowa.
Khloee Cannon of Hawkeye, Iowa has recently been announced as the 2024 recipient of the Iowa Foundation Heifer Award. Khloee is the daughter of Stephanie and Ben Schulmeister and has 2 sisters: Hailee (16), Brexlee (5) and brother, Layton (8). As an award winner, she received three purebred Shorthorn bred heifers which were purchased from the Gilman Shorthorn herd located at Stuart, Iowa. The foundation heifers of the breed of the winner’s choice are awarded each year by Iowa Beef Breeds Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. At the end of five years, Khloee will be expected to repay $7,500 to help with funding to keep the program going into the future. The program is in year fourteen and was developed to help youth establish purebred seedstock herds of their own. Khloee is a seventh-grade student at West Central K - 12 School in Maynard, Iowa where she is involved in basketball, volleyball and softball. She joined 4-H as a Clover Kid when she was in Kindergarten and is an active member of the Harlan Fremont 4-H Club where she has been involved in a number 100
of community service projects. In addition, she is a 5 year member of the Iowa Jr. Shorthorn Association and the Iowa Jr. Beef Breeds Association. She shares her family’s love of the Shorthorn breed and has shown not only at her local County Fair, but also at the Iowa State Fair, Iowa Beef Expo, Iowa Jr. Shorthorn Field Days and numerous IJBBA Jackpot shows. In 2023, she competed against 5 other contestants and was chosen to serve as “Little Miss Cowgirl’ for Fayette County Cattlemen. Khloee’s recommendations credit her with goals of striving for excellence, being a peer role model and having an exceptional work ethic. Last fall, she went into classrooms of 2nd and 3rd graders to discuss the beef industry and answer questions about cattle. Her 4-H presentation, this year, was “Newborn Herd Health” which was information to educate members about the care needed for a newborn calf at the time of birth. She is planning to learn more about genetics, breeding, feeding, grazing practices, budgets and promotion of the beef industry. She is not only a good showman but is also well versed in current beef industry issues. She plans to promote the Award Heifer project by sharing on their Facebook page and talking about it at Iowa State Fair, Iowa Shorthorn Jr Field Day, local cattlemen’s meetings and at school. She was honored at the IJBBA Year End Awards held at 4:30 pm on Friday, February 16, 2024 in the Pavilion at the Iowa State Fair Grounds and later at the Iowa Shorthorn Association Annual Banquet. - Norma Bolton, for the Iowa Beef Breeds Council --

The applicant or their parent/guardian must have transferred or been transferred an Angus registration paper in the last 36 months (on or after May 1, 2021) and must be considered commercial and not seedstock in their operation. traight Your favorite non-ranch activity to do in your free time? About the Stockman. Hamilton Farms has been raising registered Angus cattle for 43 years. Robert and Gail Hamilton built Hamilton Farms from ground zero (first generation), and now calve around 350 momma cows. Hamilton Farms land holdings include approximately 850 acres of hay, 1,800 acres of cropland, and 3,000 acres of native and tame pasture. We are a family-based operation and now manage the operation with our youngest son, Joel, and his wife, Taylor. We also have three to four full-time employees, plus extra seasonal help. In addition, our oldest son, Wyatt, and his wife, Stacey, help out with marketing, as well as busy times like harvest, bull sales, and haying. Our middle son, Wacey, and his wife, Carlye, live three hours away and are currently not involved with the day-to-day workings of the ranch.”
106
Gail and I have been avid water skiers for many years, and now our whole family looks forward to getting some ‘lake time’ every summer. Slalom waterskiing is a daily early morning ritual when we are at the lake.”
What is your least favorite job on the ranch? Picturing sale bulls would be the all-time worst job of the year. Maybe that could also be the best day on the Ranch when we have finally pictured the last sale animal!!” below The Hamilton family (l-r): Joel & Taylor, Carlye & Wacey with Oshie and Romee, Wyatt & Stacey, and Gail & Rob.

A conversation with everyday Stockmen,
Robert and Gail Hamilton Hamilton Farms of Cochrane, Alberta, Canada
The most important lesson you’ve learned in this business? Don’t follow fads! Stay focused on our basic fundamental breeding goals. I feel that selecting genetics with curve bending numbers will often lead you down a road where you don’t want to be! Balanced traits seem to work best in our operation and eyeballing cattle will never get old!”
above HF Tiger 5T, Agribition 2009 Champion Bull.
Which animal (any species) has left the greatest impact on you?
Your go-to sorting apparatus?
The animal which has left the biggest impact at Hamilton Farms is an Angus bull which we raised, HF Tiger 5T. Tiger will probably be remembered by us as the best breeding bull we have ever used. Since Tiger daughters have been in production at Hamilton Farms, those daughters have been responsible for producing so many of our high-selling bulls each year.”
Our best sorting apparatus is a whip with flag. They are custom made with a Hamilton Farms logo on the flag. Many of our bull customers use these as well and they are very popular. I must also mention the other sorting apparatus used here at Hamilton Farms. All three of our boys played hockey at a very high level, and this resulted in an abundance of broken hockey sticks which always seem to be close at hand around the chute!”
What about the beef cattle industry excites you the most?
Describe your best day.
Raising beef cattle is as challenging as you want to make it, and there is no right or wrong direction, as long as you are fulfilling your customers’ needs. Anticipating the production of a new sire, or looking forward to seeing calves out of old proven sires is always exciting for us.” THE STOCKMAN | March 2024
The best day for me each and every year is when the last pairs are turned out on grass in the spring! Our winters are long, and our feeding period seems like it goes on forever! The smell of green grass and the sound of happy cows grazing is very fulfilling!”
What is the most used tool on your ranch? How old is it? LOL, I think that would get split between two tools which both happen to be John Deere! One is our 960 zero turn lawn mower which helps us keep Gail’s yard immaculate, and the other is our 835 Gator, which seems to log a lot of miles checking pastures. Both are around 5 years old!” learn more hamiltonfarms.ca
