Reflection.
Harvest is in full swing and nearly complete for most folks in our area. The Holiday catalog arrived at our house last week (in OCTOBER!), so our kids are already crafting their lists and on a full count-down to Christmas. I, however, am still somewhere on a beach, definitely not yet in winter mode. But, like it or not, seasons change, often it feels without warning. That change does provide an opportunity for reflection. Did we accomplish what we needed to over the summer? What is on our list for the next four months? How did our plans change over the last three months? As you read through our November profile features, you get the gist that these breeders have a plan. Wellthought-out plans that move them closer to their end goal with each passing day. So, if you are not ready for winter, don’t think about that just yet. Instead, spend time reflecting on how you spent your sunny summer days and maybe what you need to do before they return. Wishing everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving, and remember, take us with you to the dinner table and share with your friends and family!

Gill Red Angus puts philosophies to work in South Dakota.

THE STOCKMAN
G ill Red Angus, Timber Lake,
S.D., looks to breed Red Angus cattle that are focused on performance—both in the pasture and when moved to the feedlot. It’s a philosophy they have implemented since the 1970s. Bryan Gill’s parents, Larry and Janet, started Gill Red Angus ranch on a small section in 1968, after Larry got out of the Army. However, Red Angus became part of the equation in 1979, when Larry bought his first 6 registered Red Angus cattle from the Enid School Dispersion in Oklahoma. Today, Gill Red Angus includes 18,000 acres, 700 registered Red Angus cows, runs around 1000 yearlings on grass, and operates a winter feedlot.
EVERYTHING GROWN IS FED TO THE COW “We grow 650 acres of corn for silage and grain, a couple hundred acres of oats, 400 acres of millet and sorghum for feed, and 600 acres of grass and alfalfa for hay,” Bryan says. “Everything we grow is fed to the cow.” The Gill family utilizes 16,500 acres for rotational grazing, managing their pastures fastidiously. They leave a third of the grass for regrowth and set aside 3000 acres of grass just for winter grazing. “We winter graze over half of our cows,” Bryan adds. “Mature cows will stay on grass all winter, without any hay. We do give them a little salt and mineral, and some protein if needed.”
This strategy has proven successful for the Gill family. Bryan says that in the last 20 years, they have only needed to feed these cattle two of the last 20 winters.
RED ANGUS COVERS ALL THE BASES “Red Angus covers all the bases,” Bryan says. “They have excellent maternal qualities, they’re known for their good disposition, yet we breed for performance, cows with substance and bone, who will do well on both grass and in the feedlot.” A Red Angus female from Gill Red Angus is known for being deep bodied, easy keeping, and average size of 1,300-1,400 pounds. “It’s a misconception that everybody needs a small cow to graze

like we do,” Bryan says. “We don’t have big cows, but they have a lot of middle and length, making them really easy keeping.” The operation uses both AI and natural service for breeding, artificially inseminating cows annually, and then turning out clean up bulls with the herd.
November 2021
“We don’t use a lot of popular, mainstream bulls, because those cattle are raised in different environments,” Bryan says. “We prefer to buy a bull and use him hard over a few breeding seasons naturally and AI.”
16
Currently, Gill Red Angus is using bulls including sons of Hard Dive, Prospect, Seneca, and many other outstanding bulls. “We try to breed our females to bulls that have feed efficiency, along with the maternal abilities
that Red Angus is known for,” Bryan adds. The operation includes two separate herds, each with its own purpose. The first group is where Gill Red Angus sources their yearling bulls that are sold at an annual production sale in April. These females are bred back at the end of May. The majority of females are in the second herd, which calves in April, May and early June. This herd group is bred back in mid-late July. Young heifers are bred for the first time at 14 months. “We do some genomic testing, parent verification and a little bit of i50K,” Bryan says. In the spring, calves are given BoviShield Gold and again before weaning in the fall. Calves are also vaccinated with Inforce 3, a mycoplasma shot and given a drench
for their gut. Bulls that are to be sold are semen checked at the time. Cattle are poured several times throughout the year.
MARKETING Two-year-old bulls are sold at an annual production sale in December, where 130-150 bulls and 100 commercial bred heifers are sold. At the April production sale, about 100 yearling bulls are sold and 100 commercial replacement heifers are sold. “We also sell about 50 bulls privately,” Bryan says. “Between our two sales and private treaty, we sell around 300 bulls annually.” One of the tactics Gill Red Angus uses to promote their operation is to buy back calves raised by their customers each fall.

“We feed out the calves, and further help our customers,” he says. “We work as a team with our customers, and hopefully both of us can all make a little bit of money along the way.”
LOOKING FORWARD The future of Gill Red Angus is bright, as the operation plans to keep selling bulls and growing their feedlot and yearling programs.
“We buy a bunch of steers and top quality replacement heifers in the fall,” Bryan says. “We winter out the steers and sell the heavy ones in January-March when the market is good and summer the lighter ones on grass. “ The best heifers will be sorted out and sold at the April production sale, while another 250-300 heifers will be bred and spend the summer at Gill Red Angus, to be sold in the fall. “Everything we buy is from our customers,” Bryan says. “If you buy our bulls, we’ll bid on your
calves.” Bryan says they got the idea of buying their customers’ calves from a few other top cattle producers in their area who have different breeds. “We followed their lead, to great success,” Bryan says. “We’re one of the few Red Angus seedstock producers who do this.” Because the strategy is so successful, Bryan says the operation intends to continue with it, particularly as the feedlot continues growing.
The next generation will also be coming into the operation in the next decade, Bryan says. Bryan’s brother, Brent, and his wife, Emily, are part of the operation, with their kids. “My oldest son, Holden, is 14, and he wants to be part of the operation someday, so we have to continue growing,” Bryan says. “We need to be sustainable, efficient, and keep consumers happy so we continue to have customers in the future.” learn more gillredangus.com Gill Red Angus fall bull and female sale will be held Sunday, December 8, 2021 at the ranch near Timber Lake, SD.
November 2021
Counting their December production sale, April production sale, and private treaty sales, Gill Red Angus moves around 300 bulls annually.

PREPARING FOR CATTLE TRANSPORT SAVES TIME, MONEY, AND STRESS W
ith fall upon us, many producers are beginning to plan shipment of this year’s calf crop or moving cattle from summer pasture to crop residues, fall/winter pastures, or to a dry lot. Each and every year, millions of head of cattle are transported from point A to point B. During this time, our bumperpull trailers, gooseneck trailers, or cattle pots are giant billboards for the cattle industry. Because of this fact, we as cattle producers should be ensuring we are doing our part of shedding a positive light on the cattle industry by following best management practices when transporting our animals.
November 2021
There are several important factors that should be considered when cattle are being transported including loading conditions, time in transit, weather conditions, comingling, segregation of different sexes and weight classes into separate trailer compartments, driver experience, and animal health status and physical condition.
24
Shipping can be one of the most stressful times in a calf’s life. Greater amounts of stress on cattle during shipping may increase the percentage of shrink loss of the animal. If producers are able to reduce shrink by one percent, this alone could benefit the industry by more than $325 million. A past Beef Quality Assurance survey
indicated that feeder calves traveling to Texas or Nebraska feedyards traveled 468 ± 415 miles.
stress, it is important that producers work to make the shipping process as stress free as possible.
Furthermore, the 2016 National Beef Quality Audit and Market Cow and Bull Quality Audit found that the average load of fed cattle travel over 2.5 hours and more than 135 miles from the feedyard to the harvest facility, and market cows and bulls traveled over 9 hours and more than 395 miles from their origin to the harvest facility. These results also found that the amount of space we are providing these animals during transit are falling short of animal handling recommendations for our larger animals.
There are several pre-shipping suggestions that have been made as a result of previous research. These include:
According to North American Meat Institute recommended animal handling guidelines, a 1,000 – 1,400-pound hornless animal should be provided 12 - 18 sq. ft. of space. According to both audit results, fed cattle were allowed on average 12.2 sq. ft. and market cows and bulls were allowed 12.4 sq. ft. The previous data provides insight on the long distances cattle travel which could have negative impacts on cattle welfare and performance due to stress. The stress from shipping can have an impact on calves’ immunity and prolong the amount of time calves are off feed following shipping. With these disadvantageous effects related to
• Cattle are fed and watered within
five hours prior to being loaded if the trip length is over 12 hours
• Cattle being loaded for trips lon-
ger than four hours should be fed within 24 hours prior to loadin
• Cattle should be in good health and fit for transport
• Cattle should be handled as little as possible and as gently as possible prior to transport
• Cattle should receive a minimum of five hours of rest following 48 hours of transport
One resource available to producers is the newly developed Beef Quality Assurance Transportation (BQAT) on-line training modules located at www.BQA.org. With over 2,000 BQAT certifications currently issued in Nebraska, these modules can help producers improve shipping methods and reduce stress on cattle during the shipping period. This resource provides checklists that shippers can work through to help make shipping cattle safe for both personnel and cattle. It also contains loading den-

Finally, one important task that producers must work through when shipping cattle across state lines is the requirements for entry that each state animal health official prescribes. Producers have had to search through state regulations to ensure they meet all the requirements to

transport cattle across state lines; however, a new feature offered at www.interstatelivestock.com allows producers to enter the state of origin cattle are coming from and the final destination the cattle are being shipped. The website will then provide all cattle health requirements for transportation. This feature is not only for cattle heading to the feedlot or inspected harvest facility, but producers can also use it for sales, exhibition, and show and rodeo stock. With this new resource, producers can easily find all the requirements to successfully transport cattle to all 50 states. It is important not only to the producer, but also the industry as a whole, that cattle are humanely handled when transported. As mentioned, several resources are available for producers to review
for more information on transporting cattle safely and in a humane manner. Producers should review these tools and resources to ensure they are following the best management practices when transporting cattle. Priority on uniformity at TK Angus in Nebraska.

ike many cattle operations, TK Angus found its beginning with the dream of a young 4-H member. Tim Marlatt purchased several Angus show heifers in the 1970s and found his way to the winner’s backdrop at the Nebraska State Fair with 5 grand and reserve champion heifers through his 4-H career. In 1984, Tim and his wife, Kim, were married and founded TK Angus and later relocated to the current Wood Lake ranch in the sand hills of Nebraska. Two of the original show heifers, Edella and Tesa, still have a marked influence on the cow herd several generations later and are true foundation females.
30
The first annual bull sale was held in 1989 at the Ogallala Livestock Auction while Tim and Kim were still living near Imperial, Neb. In 1991, the couple moved to
Gordon, Neb., and made TK Angus a full time operation. The move to the current location outside Wood Lake, Neb., was made during the spring of 2013. Bulls are still marketed through an annual bull sale, held on the first Monday in December. In 1994, the first female sale was held, and females are still sold through production sales. Producing uniform, productive, adaptable Angus cattle is the top priority at TK Angus. Much emphasis is placed on selecting genetics to meet the needs of commercial cattlemen in all types of climate and terrain. The herd is built to add “pay weight” with elite, maternally-focused females. “Those females raise bulls that will go out and work for our commercial customers to create the keeping kind of replacement females

types by using a small number of bulls on the entire cow herd. “One of the biggest compliments that we have received at the sale is, ‘I don’t know how to pick; they all look the same!’”

Most of the cows are bred via artificial insemination then turned out with the herd sires. When selecting bulls to use, careful consideration is taken to ensure the goals of the operation are being met while also adding value by filling in the needs that may be missing from the cow’s side. “We strive to look at the dams behind these bulls to ensure that they are good-footed, good-uddered females so we can be confident that the female progeny will fit into our herd,” Marlatt explains. When the right herd or AI sires are found, they are used heavily in the TK Angus program. As uniformity is extremely important to commercial customers, Tim and Kim strive to decrease the variation in pheno-

The Marlatts believe every seedstock producer should finish and market cattle to get a first-hand experience of the way their genetics work from birth to plate in the real world. The genetic product being marketed needs to work in a variety of situations, so Tim feeds out steers and does his own marketing with those steers. NHTC and All-Natural programs offer a value-added opportunity, and that, coupled with exceptional end product, means TK genetics are proven exceptional even on the bottom end of the calf crop those steers that weren’t left as bulls for potential breeding prospects.
In the fall of 2021, 190 steers were sold on Superior Livestock’s Sheridan sale at 10 ½ months of age: those steers weighed 785 pounds off of grass and sold for $1.84/cwt to dollar out at $1,444 per head. The last group of 185 head of home-raised fat steers fed out at TK Angus graded 100% USDA Choice or better with 57% of them grading USDA Prime. Kim is a very hands-on cattlewoman filling in with calving cows, helping with AI season, and keeping the trains running on time. Rick, Tim and Kim’s son, and his wife, Jenn, are active in the cattle operation today. After five years as a
pharmacist, Rick moved back to the family ranch, and their son, Gavin, is sure to be an avid cattleman, too. Rick’s sister, Sara, recently finished medical school and plans to move back to rural Nebraska as a family practice physician. “If you want to breed cattle, you need to commit the time and effort to go and see as many cattle and different operations as you can to see what type of cattle that you want to produce. It is important to find cattle that fit your environment, and also that there is a market for the product that you want to produce. There are niches within each breed

of cattle, find the one that works for you,” says Tim. He believes that using the resources available and building relationships are key to the success of any agriculture business. A production bull and female sale is held annually on the first Monday of December. This year that date is December 6th, and 180 fall born age-advantaged bulls, 20 spring-born bulls, as well as the dispersal of the spring-calving herd of 160 bred heifers and cows as well as a few special heifer calves will be offered. Updates to the sale offering will be available at tkangus.com as well as on the ranch’s Facebook page at TK Angus. empire built with grit, determination, a lot of luck, and a deep resolve to not give up. The Weaver family of central Illinois operates Weaver Angus Farm, a herd of elite females chosen specifically to produce champion show cattle, and the Jubilee Café, a restaurant where everything is made from scratch, including 25 different kinds of pie, and Novix tree stands, an American-made sportsman’s brand priding itself on quality and versatility.
38
Bob Weaver is a legend in the Angus industry. His parents, Avery and Lena, moved the family to Peoria, Ill., and rented hog and beef cattle farm from Murray Baker, who was at the time the Chairman of the Caterpillar Corporation, whose world headquarters was in Peoria. A second farm was leased from Mr. Baker, and farming operations were eventually turned over
to Bob and his brother, Floyd. The Weaver family bought one of the farms from Mr. Baker a few years later. Bob exhibited his first calf, an Angus heifer he bought with his brother, in 1937. In 1941, the brothers bought an Angus bull for $350, and, through a lot of hard work, the bull was sold for $2,000 at the annual Illinois Angus sale. Bob was known for often saying, “The harder you work, the luckier you get.” The Weaver Angus Farm
legacy started with Bob and his wife, Virginia, and was taken over by their son, Jerry and his wife, Nancy. A 12-year-old’s dream has grown into an empire

of an Angus reputation. His work ethic has been instilled through 4 generations of Weavers, and an entrepreneurial spirit is evident in each of them. Weaver Enterprises,

Jubilee café was purchased by Jerry and Nancy Weaver in 1990 from friends, and since it was an established business just down the street from the Weavers’ home, it was an excellent opportunity. Breakfast is served all day, and hours are 6 am to 8 pm every day of the year except Thanksgiving
November 2021
The KFC restaurants were all sold 5 years ago, and the only remaining restaurant owned by the Weavers is the Jubilee Café just off I-74. Cattlemen come from miles around daily to talk about livestock and enjoy a cup of coffee and slice of pie. It is a muststop for exhibitors traveling to the NAILE in Louisville, Kent., as well, with many enjoying meals on their way to the show and also stopping on their way home.

Day and Christmas Day. Their daughter, Shelley, has managed the Jubilee Café for the past 20 years, and since 1990, the Weavers have employed only 3 pie-bakers. The dining room seats 100 with an additional banquet room for small gatherings. The banquet room has been used for many agricultural meetings over the past 30 years. Bob was well known for his unmatched courtesy, his unshakable faith, and his integrity in all dealings. He passed these virtues down to his children and grandchildren, emphasizing the value of follow-through and following the “Golden Rule”. The Weaver family legacy was built on a firm foundation of faith, honesty, integrity, and helping others. Three hundred fifty-two acres were developed into homes surrounding a golf course, Weaver Ridge. The golf course was rated America’s second best new public course and among the top 100
courses in the country according to Golf Digest. Over the past sixty years, Weaver Angus Farm has earned an international reputation for producing and exhibiting top-tier cattle. The Weavers have owned and exhibited five Grand Champion bulls at the National Western Stock Show in Denver and countless Weaver Angus heifers and bulls have found their way to the winner’s backdrop. Many of the Weavers’ successes would not be possible without the constant help of Dean Janssen. He was hired in his teens by Bob and has helped with all the Weavers’ endeavors from planting flowers at the KFC restaurants to hauling cattle and kids to cattle shows across
the country, fitting, coaching, and cheerleading, to managing the cattle at home. An invaluable member of the Weaver crew, he currently works with the fifth generation of the family. Currently, Jerry and Nancy’s son, Jeff along with his wife, Tara, operate Weaver Angus Farm. “Jeff keeps them alive, and Tara makes

Today, Weaver Angus Farm comprises 38 elite Angus females. Each is bred via AI with current show ring trends in mind. Seeds in Season
Functional forage and pasture.
contributed article by Justin Fruechte, Forage & Cover Crop Specialist Millborn Seeds, Brookings, S.D. millbornseeds.com
WINTER GRAZING STRATEGIES T
wo of my favorite times of year are getting pairs on pasture in the spring and turning cows on corn stalks in the fall. As cattlemen, the seasons dictate our actions, and these turnouts seem to represent changing seasons. I love the gratification and sense of contentment my cows and I both feel when that first corn cob is rolled around in their mouth. Without question, grazing stalks is the most popular fall/winter feed strategy, but I want to highlight a few other less popular ideas.
November 2021
Fall rains in much of the Midwest have pushed new growth on forage fields. This late growth may have been harvested as hay or silage,
48
but a swath grazing practice could be used if not. Swath grazing is simply swathing the forage into a windrow and fencing off allocated windrows to graze in the winter. Most commonly, warm-season annual forages such as millets, sorghums, and sudangrasses are used this way in northern climates. These plants are harder to dry and cure for hay, leading producers to leave the swath and graze it when winter freezes up. This method can lower feed costs by eliminating baling, hauling, and daily feeding. It can also be an excellent method to spread manure on your field without having to haul it. The drawbacks to swath graz-
ing are fencing and unexpected quality issues to the windrow. Excessive fall rains can cause spoilage to heavy windrows when weather isn’t conducive for proper curing. A common misbelief about swath grazing is that it does not work with high snowfall. But, producers who allow cows to dig through feet of snow to reach the feed in the swath have proven this idea wrong. If you’d like to minimize the risk of spoilage in the windrow, go ahead and bale it but leave the bales in the field. This method has been termed ‘bale grazing.’ Strategically placing the bales throughout the field and then fencing allocated bales for allotted periods allow the cattle to feed themselves, eliminating the time and resources it takes to feed your cows every day. Waste, however, does increase with this method but can also be used to your land’s advantage. Promoters of bale grazing use the tactic to increase organic matter and soil quality in poorer areas of the fields. The litter and manure concentration

can drastically boost the future productivity of that land, which may, in turn, offset your loss in hay waste.

We all realize that herd health is better when the cattle remain in fields grazing, and feeding expenses are lower. Balancing the efficiencies of feeding mechanically harvested feeds versus the utilization rates of grazed feeds becomes the challenge. As feed costs rise, utilization rates
become more relevant. Keeping utilization rates high using lower-cost mechanically harvested feeds becomes the ultimate challenge to keep winter feed costs in check.

DONORS: • Should be at least 50 days post

and have no history of infertility.
• Be in good condition and on a good plane of nutrition.
• Have access to a good trace mineral program.
• Vaccinate recipients at least 30 days prior to use.

SYNCHRONIZATION: • Plan out any synchronization to
avoid any scheduling conflicts / Sundays / Holidays. If CIDRS are put in on Wednesdays or Thursdays, transfers fall on Saturdays and Sundays.
• Recipients should be at least 50
days post calving before synchronizing.
• Do not vaccinate recipients during the synchronization process.
• Donors and recipients can be
synchronized together to allow fresh transfer using CIDRS.
NUTRITION: • The most important factor for
donor and recipients is adequate energy. Ideally this will come from a fiber-based source (hay or pasture). Concentrates can be used to supplement energy, but excessive amounts of concentrates may be detrimental to embryo production on the donors.

• Trace minerals are also important to bovine fertility. Donors and recipients should have a good trace mineral product available to them at all times. If they have not been on a good product or there are concerns with imbalances in the ration, then we recommend that a chelated trace mineral product be used. Chelation will improve absorption and can help a donor catch up her trace mineral status quicker.

We have had them hauled in as far as 300 miles with good results. These are just some of the main points to consider when planning to use ET. I grew up north of Denver and was driven to build an elite herd of Angus cattle following my first trip to the National Western Stock Show. Growing up I raised and showed Angus heifers and steers and became involved in the Colorado Angus Association and it was at a Colorado Angus Association event that I met my husband, Jeff. He shared my passion for Angus cattle and we married a year after meeting. We lived north of Denver until 1998 when my parents sold the land I grew up on and asked us to join them in ranching full time. For nearly 24 years we have been ranching full time in Montrose, Colorado. Along with our children, Brandon and Britney, we’ve been developing a business that produces registered Angus heifers, bulls and show heifers. Our operation is quite unique, in that we raise cattle at high altitude. In the summer the cattle run on mountain pastures as high as 8,500 feet. And every fall all the calves cooks. are PAP tested, to determine if they are susceptible to brisket disease, also known as high altitude disease. My children were active in the junior Angus program, showing and participating in contests. They both served on the National Junior Angus Board of Directors. Our family has been blessed with numerous championships in the show ring. Two achievements that have meant a great deal to me include the 2010/11ROV Angus Show Heifer of the Year, Lazy JB Queen Latifah 925 and that same year the runner-up ROV

DID I SAY I LOVE FALL?!
November 2021
W

e are off to a great fall so far. Many crops are harvested, calves are getting weaned, preparations for the winter are well underway, and maybe most importantly, the Cyclones are starting to look like the football team we envisioned at the beginning of the season! In between working our fall calving first-calf heifers, I had to take a break and watch us pull out a big win in a great game against the Okie State Cowboys. Meanwhile, on my computer, I watched the bred cow sale at Humeston and another production sale happening at the same time. I love this time of year! Now, on to the markets and what we are seeing through the barns:
think the fat cattle market would take off, but the high prices on the retail end have hurt demand enough to make things a little stagnant. But, we have seen some tops in the low 30’s the past couple of weeks and look for this upward trend to continue.
The fat cattle market still has been a very slow uptick. I think we will see this market bust through sometime soon and get into the up 20’s and low 30’s, but it has been a struggle all year. With a favorable cattle on feed report, you would
Bred cows and heifers have been selling very well for this time of year. We are seeing some good running-age cows bring in the upper teens and good heifers in the low $2,000 range. That is a good price for this time of year. I expect
The feeder market has continued to be strong. In some cases, the bigger 800-900 pound cattle have been bringing the same or very close $ per hundred as 500-600 pound cattle. All in all, the feeder cattle market has been strong as the fat cattle market looks to be bullish over the next year, and there has been some stability in commodity prices.
Kirk Lynch, Lynch Livestock Inc., Waucoma, IA Kirk is the Beef Division manager for Lynch Livestock Inc. and oversees all aspects of their backgrounding and cattle feeding operations throughout Iowa and Kansas. He is also deeply involved in the newly re-opened Humeston Livestock Exchange in Humeston, Iowa. In addition, Kirk and his wife Mary own and operate Heartland Simmentals in Northeast Iowa, which is a seed stock operation that consists of 500 registered Simmental and Angus cows. They have four children: Gabrielle (7), Brayden (6), Vivian (4), and Bianca (1).
that these prices will only go up as we get through fall and into winter. If that is the case, and you are looking for bred females, it might be the time to pull the trigger. The cull cow and bull market have seen a bit of dip as more and more of them are coming through the barns. This will probably continue for the next few months as people preg check, wean, and pull bulls. That’s all for this month, have a great fall, and make sure to cheer on your favorite team as we head into the final stretch of the season!
