time and talents.

My dad stopped by recently to help us with a quick fix on the PTO of our feeding tractor. He is our go-to mechanic and electrician, even if it’s just for advice or troubleshooting. We are so thankful he is just a few miles away - and also grateful that his talents aren’t things like organizing reports, ha! My husband excels in doctoring cattle and intervening with calving issues. Likewise, people will call him for advice or help. We all have talents and things we shine in. Sharing our time and abilities with others is such a rewarding experience. And better yet, when you can make a living based off your God-given talents, that’s where the magic happens. I invite you to study the following pages - there are several female sales in the days and months ahead, so take a look! Also, read up on some fall herd considerations with the Extension Education article on page 30 and Veterinarian View article on page 72. If you’re looking for some new recipes to try, join Ardel Quam from Marda Angus Farms on page 80 as she shares some of her favorites with us. Lastly, I want to acknowledge the young boy on the front cover of this issue. High-fives to kids in Ag! Getting young children involved in this great industry is so impactful. Take care and stay well!

Are You Tired...

of Buying Bulls that Fall Apart? We specialize in Thick, Easy-Fleshing Bulls that are Developed on Grass

We have been producing and selling no-nonsense, ranch-raised bulls for over 30 years. Bulls are being developed slowly and naturally on nothing but grass. While others are focused on increasing pounds per animal (bragging rights), we’re focused on increasing pounds per acre (profit).

Because of the way our bulls have been bred and developed, they can breed twice as many cows for twice as many years as bulls coming out of other programs.

We also evaluate and score our bulls for fleshing ability, muscling, grass efficiency, thickness, masculinity, hair coat and fly resistance. What’s a bull worth that can breed twice as many cows for twice as many years. He’s worth a whole lot more than you’ll ever have to pay for him! Nelson Family Farms remains tireless in its pursuit of excellence in multiple facets of the cattle industry.

P

erusing Nelson Family Farms (NFF) DreamWorks sale cattle catalog one will find pages graced with perfectly appointed open and bred females. Angus and Simmental beauties bred, developed, and groomed with the dream they’ll make it to the backdrops at shows across the country or produce the next champion. Though competitive show cattle are an integral part of the family operation in Mabel, Minn., there’s far more to NFF than meets the eye. The operation includes a seedstock operation, feedlot, and two sale barns. Family members work together to ensure the success of each segment of the operation. “From a business standpoint being a little more diversified all pays off over time. The goal is always to make the most of every opportunity that we have in front of us,” Gabe Chase with Nelson Family Farms said. 16

NFF TODAY Joe Nelson and his wife, Barb, started Nelson Family Farms in the 1980s. Their children, Kayla and Matt, grew up showing cattle, helping with the seedstock operation, and appreciating the different aspects of cattle industry.

at the seedstock operation on days there are no auctions. The seedstock program’s one full-time employee, Abe Hauge, works alongside Gabe in the day-to-day management of the cow/calf herd. “Abe has been around registered cattle his entire

life and he is a tremendous help. Whether exhibiting at a show or getting ready for a sale I know our cattle will hit the ring looking their very best thanks to Abe’s talent. We are extremely fortunate to have him with us on a daily basis,” Gabe commented.

Today, both Kayla and Matt’s families are involved in the cattle operation. Kayla’s husband, Gabe Chase, runs the seedstock operation, while she works in the offices at the sale barns in Lanesboro, Minn., and Decorah, Iowa. Matt Nelson owns and operates the feedlot in Iowa. Joe Nelson focuses on the two sale barns and splits his time between the other operations. It takes everyone always working together to keep the sectors of the business running. When needed, workers at the sale barns pitch in 18

The family also works with an independent nutritionist who creates the rations for the cattle in the seedstock program as well as for animals in the feedlot. NFF utilizes 1,000 acres of cropland to grow feed for their cattle. They feed corn silage and haylage. Additionally, the seedstock cattle graze on about 650 acres of pasture. Steers and heifers that fail to make the cut in the seedstock program head to Matt’s feedlot. Eventually those animals make their way to the family’s sale barns during the fat cattle sales. “Another aspect of the program that has expanded in recent years is purchasing feeder cattle from our bull customers to

finish at Matt’s feedlot. It has been very rewarding to help add value to the calves produced by our customers and then to monitor the performance data of our genetics in a true commercial setting,” Gabe said.

SEEDSTOCK OPERATION Angus, Simmental, and SimAngus cattle comprise the seedstock herd. Nelson Family Farms utilizes 250 cows in its registered cow/calf program. Close to two-thirds of the herd is registered Simmentals and a third is registered black Angus. The family markets purebred Angus and Simmental females and bulls. Additionally, through the years NFF

has developed an affinity and large customer base for its Simmental and Angus cross genetics. The SimAngus cattle possess the hybrid vigor desired by many of NFF’s customers, especially commercial buyers looking for cleanup bulls. “The SimAngus hybrid is, for today’s cattle industry, as close to the ideal animal as you can get. Beginning with moderate birthweights and a black hide, then extra performance potential, and when managed correctly the optimum carcass,” Gabe shared. The consistency and longevity of the SimAngus females as well as their versatility when it comes to

19

matings adds to their appeal. “With a good SimAngus cow you have one that can be steered in any direction when breeding season comes around. The door is simply wide open for mating these highly productive females,” Gabe added.

BUILDING THE FUTURE For the past seven years, Gabe has guided and managed the seedstock sector of NFF. He ponders daily on ways he can make the next calf crop better than the last. He researches herd sires and analyzes their genetics, solicits advice from trusted cattle producers, and discusses strategies with the rest of the family. When making sire selections NFF strikes a balance of using some proven sires that have already worked well in their program with trying a few of the popular sires new to the cattle scene.

20

November 2023 | THE STOCKMAN

“As seedstock producers, in addition to being extra critical of our cattle, we also need to be constantly probing the upper limits of what the cattle and their genetics are capable of,” Gabe said. “Each year is a new opportunity to do an even better job than the year before. Whether that is through sire selection, nutrition, or other aspects of management, each year we must build upon years prior to stay competitive in this ever-changing industry.” The seedstock operation also sticks with the basics, making sure the genetic selections will produce animals that are efficient, easy-keeping, and highly fertile. Traits such as longevity and structural soundness in feet, legs, and udders are also selection requirements. NFF relies extensively on embryo transfer (ET) to build its base of elite genetics. Out of its 250 head of momma cows, about 75 of those

THE STOCKMAN | November 2023

21

cows will have an ET calf each year. “We have leaned heavily on ET over the past five or six years to help us crank out those highly valuable individuals in volume. It has been an invaluable tool for us to generate those extra numbers and utilize multiple matings each breeding season on our most proven dams,” Gabe shared. The ET genetics also give NFF additional elite females for its DreamWorks sale as well as herd sire prospects to sell off the farm through private treaty. All females in the seedstock program are given one chance to settle through AI or an embryo. Then NFF turns out cleanup bulls with the registered herds. Most all the calving takes place in January, February, and March. This year NFF calved about a dozen ET calves in the fall.

GUIDING PHILOSOPHY Though his daily mindset is to constantly improve and to produce more competitive genetics, Gabe weighs each decision for the seedstock operation with a measured approach. His overarching goal is to generate livestock that do a lot of things really well, not to produce cattle that only do one to two things at the top of the breed. “I’m not particularly caught up in trying to generate those outliers for any given trait or couple of traits,” Gabe explained. “My philosophy is to raise those complete, problem-free cattle, that can go into a variety of different scenarios and just thrive in a variety of different environments, so they are more broadly acceptable to our customer base.”

TOUGH CALLS As passionately as Gabe feels about making the right genetic selections, his conviction to make tough culling decisions is just as strong of a driving force. “I have always felt as seedstock producers we 22

NEXT GENERATION The next generation of NFF children are already learning aspects of the business. Gabe and Kayla, and their children, Claire, Lauren, and Walker; along with Matt and his wife, Jordan, and their children, Maverick and Quinn, are setting the course for the future of NFF. Of all the things the next generation will learn growing up amid the cattle industry, the most important lesson just may be that life and work are simply better when done together. learn more nelsoncattle.com

Dave Boxler, Nebraska Extension Educator University of NE - Lincoln, UNL Beef beef.unl.edu

FALL CATTLE LICE TREATMENTS T

reating cattle for lice when it’s convenient—usually during preconditioning and preg-checking— isn’t necessarily the most effective approach. While late summer and early fall endectocide (drugs that kill both internal and external parasitic insects) treatment may work on most internal parasites and horn flies, lice may escape. Nebraska cattle are usually infested with more than one species of lice, and calves, yearlings and older poor-conditioned cattle usually have the heaviest lice infestations. Heavy louse populations can lower milk production, stunt growth, cause hair loss, an unthrifty appearance and anemia. University of Nebraska and other studies indicate heavy lice populations (more than 10 lice/inch2) may reduce calf weight gains by as much as 0.21 lb/day. These studies also indicate calves fed at a higher nutrition level had lower lice populations and were affected less severely by lice than calves fed a maintenance ration.

30

TIMING OF CATTLE LICE CONTROL

CATTLE LICE TREATMENT OPTIONS

Cattle lice are cold-weather insects, thriving during wintery conditions. During summer months cattle lice undergo a period of dormancy called estivation, when their reproduction is reduced significantly. Temperatures above 78° F in September, October and November will suppress louse development, because the cattle skin temperature will exceed 100° F.

Cattle lice treatment products fall into several categories: animal sprays, non-systemic (contact) pour-on, and endectocides (systemic pour-on, absorbed internally and systemic injectable). Some non-systemic pour-ons require just one application and some require two applications spaced 14 days apart. Systemic injectables work better on the three species of sucking lice than on the little red chewing louse. A systemic pour-on can effectively kill both chewing and sucking lice.

If endectocide treatments are applied too early during a warm extended fall, like in 2021 and 2022, lice will develop slowly and can largely escape the endectocide treatment. Later, when cold weather does set in, lice outbreaks can occur if the endectocide has broken down. Livestock producers who use a fall treatment strategy should monitor their cattle for signs of lice, especially during December, January, and February, and consider re-treating. However, using the wrong products at the time can do more harm than good.

Using systemic control products between Nov. 1 and Feb. 1 is not advised as they may cause a host-parasite reaction from killing developing cattle grubs while they are in the esophagus or spinal canal of the animal. A systemic product used during fall weaning will not be a problem, and if a systemic product was used in the fall, a follow-up from November to February shouldn’t cause those issues, if it’s necessary. Producers who did not use a systemic control product during fall

November 2023 | THE STOCKMAN

weaning should consider using only non-systemic control products during this November to February time frame. If replacement animals are brought into a herd during the winter months they should be examined for lice. If present, the animals should be isolated and treated before introduction into the existing herd. Insecticide treatments, regardless of application method, should be rotated through insecticide Mode of Action groups (MoA) as outlined by the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee, to reduce the likelihood of developing resistance. The IRAC website* offers an app to download or a web-based database that outlines which insecticides are in which groups. Since there are 36 different groups, it’s best to check

the classifications prior to investing in an insecticide strategy. Continual use of products from a single numbered group against a pest species can lead to reduced control (resistance to all products in the group). The recommended

management practice to manage resistance is to alternate insecticide classes, and that applies to animal sprays, dusts, non-systemic pourons, and endectocides (injectable and pour-on formulations). To reduce control failures due to insecticide resistance, do not apply pesticides within the same group number repeatedly, and always follow label directions. Insecticides and endectocides are an investment of time, money and cattle stress, and there are real costs to insect infestations. Putting a few extra minutes into correctly applying these tools can make all the difference between an effective and ineffective insect control program. When applying any insecticide control product, please read and follow label directions. *To find the IRAC MOA groups visit their website at https://irac-online.org/mode-of-action/ and download their app. For current control recommendations, please access the following website, www.veterinaryentomology. org. Pharo Cattle Company thrives by producing low maintenance cattle with minimal inputs. Pharo Cattle Company, headquartered in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, he’s grown his seedstock operation from a single herd to a multi-state phenomenon. Pharo Cattle Company (PCC) has cooperative herds in 12 states and sells over 1,000 bulls a year.

above Kit and Deanna Pharo.

K

it Pharo has never been hesitant about taking the road less traveled. In fact, he quite prefers it. His direct and confident approach to what seems to some in the cattle industry as a rogue management style, simply makes sense to Kit. As the leader of 40

COMING HOME After being away from ranch life for 15 years, Kit and his wife, Deanna, had the opportunity to lease 4,000 acres of grassland near their hometown in Eastern Colorado.

They borrowed money to purchase a herd of commercial cows. It was a dream come true - so they thought. They jumped into ranching following standard management practices. However, due to the direction of the cattle industry at the time, the Pharos were forced to rethink their strategies. “During the 1980s, everyone in the cow/calf business was trying to make their cattle as big as they could as fast as they could. It was a race to see who could produce the biggest cattle,” Kit Pharo said. Kit soon realized it does not matter how big your cattle are if they’re not profitable. The status quo management style was not sustainable for his operation. Therefore, Kit decided he needed to take a totally different approach if he wanted to succeed. November 2023 | THE STOCKMAN

DIFFERENT DIRECTION Rather than focusing on heavier weaning weights which created bigger cows that required more feed, Kit shifted the emphasis to pounds and profit per acre, not per animal. He wanted to get the most out of every acre he controlled. His outside-the-box thinking centered around the philosophy of producing low-maintenance cattle with drastically reduced expenses. The genetics Kit needed to build his program were nearly impossible to find. Therefore, to produce the type of cattle he envisioned, Kit made the switch from a commercial operation to a seedstock operation. He said, “Being an opportunist, I decided to provide an alternative to the status quo “bigger is better” way of thinking.” It wasn’t easy, but over time and with the help of nature and disciplined culling, the Pharos accomplished what they set out to do. Pharo Cattle Company started by grazing their cows 365 days a year. The cows were not given any feed, protein or hay unless absolutely necessary (i.e., densely packed snow). Pharo Cattle Company continued to reduce expenses by eliminating vaccinations and pesticides. “We just started pulling away inputs,” Kit explained. “Most of the inputs that we are so used to today were not around one hundred years ago. And yet, there were cows that lived and thrived and bred back. After 15 years of forcing our cows to do more with less, we had cows old enough to show us what works,” Kit added. THE STOCKMAN | November 2023

MATERNAL MAKEUP The females making the cut in Pharo Cattle Company’s program are moderate in size with a frame score of 2 to 4. Their mature weight typically falls between 1,050 to 1,250 pounds. The cattle must possess the ability to maintain good body condition on limited feed resources and other inputs. “Cattle that can survive on less feed, will meet their survival requirements much sooner and then they will be able to store up energy in the

41

form of fat. Those are the ones that work,” Kit stated. The cattle must also display resilience and genetic resistance to flies and other parasites. “Cattle that have problems with parasites or that require too much feed for maintenance will eventually weed themselves out,” Kit said.

42

EXPLOSIVE GROWTH Though building the foundation of his herd may have seemed slow at first, it soon gained in popularity creating a demand larger than Pharo Cattle Company could fill. In the late 1990s, the Pharos started to establish satellite herds with a few of their loyal customers. Then in

2000, Kit and Deanna’s son, Tyson, joined the operation fulltime to handle the day-to-day management of the home ranch. The partnerships with cooperative producers grew quickly. Currently, Pharo Cattle Company has satellite herds in 12 states from Minnesota to Texas and from Al-

abama to Montana. “We are covering a huge geographical area in a whole lot of different and unique environments. That’s been another key to our success,” Kit shared.

are developed on grass and sold at 18 months of age. “Since cows are not going to spend their lives in a feedlot eating grain, we think you should be buying bulls that were born, raised and developed on grass. Unlike bulls that are developed on grain, our grass-developed bulls will not melt and fall apart when you take them home,” Kit explained.

Pharo Cattle Company’s seedstock program includes Angus, Red Angus, Hereford and composites. The variety of breeds fits in

with Kit’s philosophy of producing cattle well-suited for the environment in which they live. Pharo Cattle Company operates with around 6,000 cows across the country. All of their programs focus on grassbased genetics and operate with nominal expenses. “With the high cost of land and other inputs, cow/ calf producers must have a low or no-input operation with adaptable genetics. That’s the only way they will be able to survive,” Kit said.

The geographical and breed diversity produces bulls equipped for the environments where they will go to work. Producers come to Pharo Cattle Company to find genetics that will thrive in their climate. The Pharos have sold bulls to customers in 46 states in the continental United States as well as Hawaii. They have also sold bulls to customers in Mexico, Canada, and Australia. The low-maintenance, easy-fleshing and hardy

GRASS DEVELOPED BULLS The popularity of Pharo Cattle Company’s bulls gradually increased after its first bull sale in 1991. At the operation’s inaugural bull sale, the Pharos sold six bulls. Presently, Pharo Cattle Company sells over 1,000 bulls each year in its seven bull sales. The fall sales are held in Colorado, Alabama, Montana and Nebraska. The spring sales are located in Texas, Missouri and Colorado. Pharo Cattle Company’s bulls THE STOCKMAN | November 2023

nature of Pharo Cattle Company’s cattle produces bulls that can do more for less. “We are not afraid to turn our bulls out with 35 to 40 cows the first year, sometimes 50 cows. The second year we will go 50 to 80 cows. That blows people’s minds,” Kit shared. “But when you have low-maintenance bulls that were developed right, their feet are good, their livers are good and their reproduction is good. It just makes sense.”

TOLERANCE AND RESISTANCE In some ways, managing outside the status quo forces innovation. When Kit struggled to find the genetics he was looking for, he started to produce them on his own. Pharo Cattle Company has continued to produce animals that are genetically resistant to environmental stressors. For nearly two decades, Pharo Cattle Company has been evaluating and scoring their bulls for 44

genetic fly resistance. Kit said, “While others continue to treat the symptoms of the problem with toxic chemicals, we are helping you solve the problem with genetics.” For the past 10 years, Pharo Cattle Company has been working to develop a heat-tolerant composite breed without any Brahman genetics incorporated. The Pharos are tapping into the Spanish and African breeds to create strong, heat-tolerant genetics. November 2023 | THE STOCKMAN

EDUCATION AND FUTURE Kit is the first to admit not everyone understands or agrees with his ranching philosophies. That’s why he spent decades working to explain and educate others about his cattle management practices. He wrote his first educational newsletter in 1994 and mailed it to a couple hundred people. Much like the other components of his operation, the educational aspect of Pharo Cattle Company has boomed. Kit has traveled the country and the world speaking to cow/calf producers. He sends out a weekly email to more than 18,000 people. Pharo Cattle Company also hosts a weekly podcast and mails out a quarterly newsletter to more than 20,000 subscribers. “I attribute a lot of our success to education. My message has not changed one bit since the early 1990s. I am just looking for new and different ways to say it, so more people can understand,” Kit said.

ly today as it did all those years ago when he course-corrected the direction of his operation. Though taking the road less traveled can be far bumpier and more unpredictable, for Pharo Cattle Company, it’s been a journey to profitability and success. learn more pharocattle.com

Seeds in Season

Functional forage and pasture.

contributed article by Justin Fruechte, Product Expert - Ag Millborn Seeds, Brookings, S.D. millbornseeds.com

MANAGE PLANTS FOR FALL GRAZING: NUTRITION AND PRUSSIC ACID COVER CROP BLENDS If you planted a cover crop blend including species such as turnips, radishes, rapeseed, and cereal grains, you have a highly digestible high protein diet for your cattle to consume. Cattle will gain weight while grazing these fields, so be mindful of how you can prioritize the class of livestock grazing it. Thinner, first-calf heifers thrive on these. Or, if fences allow for it, keep your weaned calves here and let them gain well while grazing.

T

wo of my favorite times of year are getting pairs on pasture in the spring and turning cows on corn stalks in the fall. As cattle producers the seasons dictate our actions, and these turnouts seem to be representations of changing seasons. I love the sense of gratification and contentment on both the cows’ and my part when the first corn cob is rolled around in their mouth. Without question, grazing stalks is the 52

most popular fall and winter feed strategy, but I want to highlight a few other less common, but just as effective, ideas. Fall rains in much of the Midwest have pushed new growth as well as re-growth on forage fields. Optimizing lush growth and minimizing potential risk of re-growth is important. As cattlemen we are good at managing our herd, but we also need to manage the plants the herd is consuming.

The important management pointer in this scenario is to maintain adequate dry matter intake levels. Brassicas and lush new grass growth have little fiber and are nearing 80 percent moisture levels. Offering access to corn stalks or hauling out a wagon of grass hay will allow your cattle to buffer their ration with dry forage.

WARM SEASON ANNUALS Another fall grazing opportunity can come from warm season annuals including forage sorghum, sorghum-sudangrass, and millets. If planted early, these were likely harvested once and now the millets and November 2023 | THE STOCKMAN

sudangrass hybrids are re-growing. The two common concerns with grazing warm season annuals are nitrate and prussic acid poisoning. Millets are prone to high nitrates, but not prussic acid. If a plant is stressed from drought, hail, or extremely fast growth it can’t properly photosynthesize to convert the nitrogen it’s taking in from the soil. Prussic acid is common in forage sorghum and sorghum-sudangrass. This is commonly seen when damage is done to the plant, typically after a frost. Cell walls in the plants burst causing prussic acid to build up in the plant, and when consumed by cattle it results in cyanide poisoning. So, for management pointers, don’t graze re-growth until it is over 24 inches in height and wait 10 to 14 days after a frost to graze. Prussic acid is a gas and does dissipate from the plant, so when that 10 to

14 day wait period has lapsed, don’t be afraid to graze. Testing for both nitrates and prussic acid is available to give you an accurate answer of levels. Obviously, we all want to graze as long as possible to minimize winter feed costs. Strategize placing the correct class of livestock with their forage needs to be efficient with grazing utilization. Taking the time in the fall to manage plants will always pay back with less feeding days in the winter.

Woolover® Limited

Fit N Forget (FnF™) Beef Calf Cover

Fitting the FnF™ Beef Calf Cover to a new-born increased the actual hide temperature of the calf by 32 degrees Fahrenheit in just four minutes! All beef ranchers are seeking to maximize their returns from their operation. A main income generator is the number of live calves that make weaning. The weather during late winter and spring can, and does, influence the number of newborn beef calves that survive some very brutal weather that can literally devastate the very survival of these new-borns. Woolover® Ltd, based in New Zealand, is no stranger to devastating stock losses. In fact, Woolover® Ltd was “born of necessity” back in 1993 after two snowstorms, 10 days apart, claimed the lives of 2 million lambs and 40,000 calves. The answer is WOOL - Working 24/7. USDA figures suggest towards 80,000 new-born beef calves perish annually from hypothermia. Woolover® Ltd then set about designing and making a beef calf cover that was totally biodegradable, made from wool, is designed to fit an 85 lb new-born beef calf, and would simply “fall off” after 3- 4 weeks having ensured the new-born beef calf survived, was accepted by the mother, and captured some additional growth rates along the way. The Result: The Woolover® Fit N Forget (FnF™) Beef Calf Cover. • New-born calves fitted with the FnF™ Beef Calf Cover are simply not at risk of dying from hypothermia, and they will grow faster. • The cover is totally biodegradable with wool providing the warmth and absorbency to wick moisture away from the hide and the Hessian Substrate providing some strength. Be it rain, snow, windchill or, simply from the birth process, covering a new-born beef calf with the FnF™ Beef Calf Cover makes sound financial sense. The cover will last for up to 3 – 4 weeks and then falls off. • Designed for an 85 lb. live weight beef calf at birth, which is the optimum weight, but will also fit smaller calves. • Wool is providing the warmth, is absorbent, breathable, comfortable to wear, is totally biodegradable and will ensure the Thermo – Neutral Zone, being the heart/ lung area, is kept at a constant temperature, both day and night despite the worst possible conditions = survival. Dr. Clint Hilt, leading Veterinarian with MWI Animal Health, based in Power, Montana, who assisted with a trial of 50 FnF™ Beef Calf Covers on his clients’ newborn calves said, “THESE COVERS ARE LIVESAVERS.” The trial was conducted on a day when it was -23 degrees Fahrenheit and, by simply fitting a FnF™ Beef Calf Cover to a new-born, the actual hide temperature of the calf increased by 32 degrees Fahrenheit in four minutes! The Woolover® Limited FnF™ Beef Calf Covers: ORDER ONLINE at www.wooloverdirect.com or phone: Busse Barron Acres [ BBA ] 715 296 7596. FnF™ Beef Calf Covers are sold in units of 100 or packages of 10.

Genetic Evaluation What is Promogen Genetic Evaluation?

Why is Promogen important?

How does Promogen equate to profitability?

Promogen™ genetic evaluation is not just another method for establishing genomic probabilities. The purpose of the test is to identify and quantify, using a simple numerical scoring system, the presence of three key proteins that medical science has labeled collectively as “Defensins.” A twenty-year research project involving several universities in the United States and Europe has proven that physiologic performance, whether it is measured as disease resistance, fertility, productivity, or athletic ability, are directly related to the concentration of these proteins in the body. • Provides a “road map” for developing management strategies that maximize herd profitability. • Helps you identify animals who are most likely naturally inclined to herd longevity, reproductive efficiency, and naturally able to maximize environment and express Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) to the best of their ability. • Early identification of animals that may prove to incur more input costs than their counterparts. How does PROMOGEN EQUATE TO PROFITABILITY? Genetic progress in beef cattle comes with challenges. The major issue is industry segmentation. Utilizing the Promogen™ assay can add value throughout the production cycle. The ideal cow for a cow/ calf operation is one that successfully weans a feedlot-ready calf at six to seven months of age and does so with minimum added expense associated with feed supplementation, medication, and labor. At the same time, that cow is expected to breed back within 40 to 90 days post-calving to repeat the cycle; she is expected to do this year after year. Promogen™ assays will predict value-added cows that will raise healthy calves. Then there is the challenge of sire selection. Current EPDs, even when supported by genomics testing, can become little more than a good guess with so many traits being selected simultaneously. Promogen™ testing accurately identifies bulls who are more feed efficient, more disease resistant, more fertile and appear to be able to pass the ability to produce high levels of Defensins and their associated proteins to their offspring.

November 2023 | THE STOCKMAN

Scoring Promogen scores available on all sale animals 1. The system uses a numerical score of 1 to 6.5. 2. Animals with scores of less than 4 are not producing the three marker proteins we are measuring at physiologically effective levels. 3. Animals scoring between 4 to 4.5 are producing the three marker proteins at levels that are physiologically average. 4. Animals scoring between 4.5 to 5.0 are in the Top 15% of the tested population. 5. Animals scoring between 5.0 to 5.5 are within the Top 10%. 6. Animals scoring between 5.5 to 6.0 are within the Top 5%. 7. The outliers lie within the range of 6.0 to 6.5, and find themselves within the Top 1% of the tested population. • Immunologically superior animals are proven to return higher significant gains across all traits: overall wellness, fertility, and feed efficiency. • Profits on overall wellness are realized through an increased response to vaccines and antiparasitic treatments, drastically reducing the incidence of morbidity and antibiotic use. • Fertility is reflected in higher conception rates, reduced risk in early embryonic death, weaning calves at higher weight ratios, and overall retention and longevity in replacement females. • Feed efficiency is directly affected by the body’s ability to ward off inflammation due to environmental stress factors. • Cattle on feed who possess this natural ability have higher conversion rates than their counterparts who are immunologically inferior – all without commanding additional medicine costs and higher overall expenses. • Immunologically superior animals who possess specific Defensin predictive biomarkers are proven to be more profitable and aide in economic gains through these highly heritable traits for generations to follow. •

Choose immunologically superior animals through Promogen Genetic Evaluation. Choose genetic gold.

The Bullerman family has focused on breeding Angus cattle that are muscular and fast growing with excellent EPDs.

W

hat was the world like 40 years ago? Cell phones, selfies, and the Internet didn’t exist in their current forms. The space shuttle had just taken its first mission. Drivers had to use a physical map for directions when traveling - GPS and MapQuest weren’t a thing in 1983. That year is when Bullerman Angus, Adrian, Minn., got its start, and it has been building an outstanding Angus herd ever since. The herd started with Tom and Trish Bullerman buying two registered Angus heifers from a neighbor for their sons, Tyler and Trent, for a 4-H project. The maternal characteristics were the initial attraction to the Angus breed for the Bullermans. Those first heifers had a nice disposition, so the couple opted to stick with the breed. They have never really considered changing breeds. “Why change it if it’s 60

working?” Trish Bullerman asked. Over the next 10 to 15 years, the Bullerman family focused on growing their registered Angus herd, purchasing cows and heifers from Stassen Angus in Marshall, Minn. “We also purchased a few donor cows from Schaff Angus Valley and Siebring Angus in Illinois,” Trish said. For a long time, the operation was limited to about 75 pairs because of pasture availability in the area. “We picked up about 300 additional acres of pasture which really allowed us to grow,” she added.

POWERHOUSE OPERATION Today, the operation includes 225 crop acres and 420 acres of pasture, which is home to 150 registered Angus cow/calf pairs and 50 bred heifers. “In the area where we live, we were limited to grazing on creek bottoms and hills that are too steep for row crop farming, but it’s worked out well for us,” she said.

Tyler and his wife, Hilary, live only a mile away and he helps with the day-to-day farm work. His daughter, Brynn, has had a successful show career that wraps up this year. The highlight of her show career was getting fourth overall owned heifer at the 2018 National Junior Angus Show. Brynn has purchased show heifers from Prairie View Farm in Illinois and other 62

all natural heats. During breeding season, Tom and Trish watch the cattle from their house and go on evening walks, looking for signs of heat. “We’ve used a lot of 4M Ace 709 from ABS and had extremely good luck with his offspring, both bulls and heifers,” she said. “We’ve also used Sterling Pacific and Bullerman Unlimited. Those bulls all tend to follow the same pattern of balanced EPDs, consistently providing muscle and power and good carcass traits.”

BREEDING FOR GROWTH The Bullermans have focused on breeding for growth, yielding large, strapping calves, followed by foot and leg structure, disposition, muscle shape, and phenotype. “Tom and I both come from dairy backgrounds and had done some showing, so we wanted cattle that were good looking, but still had to be able to perform and do what they’re supposed to,” Trish said. “For our bull customers, foot and leg structure is important. If the bull can’t get out there and move, he isn’t going to get the job done.” THE STOCKMAN | November 2023

In the early years, the Bullermans emphasized growth, but in the last 10 to 15 years, have changed their approach to not chase extremes. Breeding decisions are a team effort. Once they have established the sires to be used for the year, each family member chooses matings for each cow. Then, they have a group discussion about each cow and settle on a sire. “We really try not to make chute side matings,” Trish said. Historically, the Bullerman herd has been exclusively artificially inseminated or embryo transfer, based on

FEEDING WHAT’S AVAILABLE The Bullermans work with a nutritionist to develop their rations during the months when the herd isn’t grazing. They incorporate the ingredients they have available, including corn silage, grass hay, alfalfa hay, wet distiller’s grain, cornstalks, and bean stubble. Everything is mixed in a feed wagon before being fed. Developing bulls are fed a similar diet, with adjustments made as needed. “There are no fences left anywhere up here, other than the few people with cattle,” Trish said. “It’s 63

very hard to graze crop residue extensively in the fields. When the cows are brought home from grass, they have 160 acres to run on and we bring feed out every day. They do graze native pastures from late May to November.” In mid-December, the momma cows are brought up to a yard near the Bullerman home in preparation for calving in January. Tom is the family calving specialist, and Trish says they’ve come to trust his instincts to know when a cow needs help.

SHOW AND SALE RING SUCCESS The operation hosts an annual bull sale in February in conjunction with their friends from K&J Angus, Lester, Iowa, and an online heifer sale each November. A few bulls are always retained to help customers out in a pinch and to sell at the Black Hills Stock Show. The Bullermans have also had success in the showring, most notably, having the champion Angus female at the South Dakota State Fair and receiving reserve champion early pen of 3 bull calves at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in 2020.

THE NEXT STAGE Forty years after starting their Angus herd, the Bullermans are ready to transition ownership of their herd to Tyler and Hilary. Tyler has flushed 12 to 15 of their best cows, and transferred embryos into a large group of recipient cows that are currently in Montana. “It’s time for us to step back and let Tyler take on the ownership,” Trish said. “We’ll be here helping, but Tyler’s been the driving force for quite a while, helping make management decisions. He’ll have a nice place to start, working with the top end of our herd, so he won’t miss a beat. Tom and I have always enjoyed working with cattle and can’t imagine a life where we won’t continue to have something to do with the cattle.” learn more bullermanangus.com

FALL PREPARATIONS FOR COW HERDS A

s we move into fall and winter it’s time to review and expand on a few things from prior articles.

TRACKING CALVING WINDOWS If you want to use ultrasound for pregnancy checking, the window for accurately measuring fetal age is from 30 to 120 days of pregnancy. This is probably one of the best tools available for managing calving or marketing breds. We will have producers who tag cows with a different color-coded tag for each designated time frame for calving. Usually this is just a blank feedlot tag, using three to four different colors. The intervals are broken up by two to three weeks each depending

on the producer’s preference.

COLLECTING DNA

We have one producer who will use a different colored zip tie around the neck of the permanent numbered tag. This zip tie is cinched down tight, and the tail cut off closely so as to not catch on anything and tear out the tag. This will save putting another hole in the cow’s ear and the colored zip ties are fairly easy to see.

If your herd has cows that need DNA samples collected for parentage, genomics or genetic defect testing, pregnancy checking is a great time to collect these samples. Most of these tests take some time to run and by doing it now, you will have results well in advance of any future breeding decisions that need to be made next spring.

This program makes sorting a lot easier, but we still like to have the producer keep a record of the fetal age, so they have a precise record of when the cow is due. If you’re selling bred heifers, having this information can help you in the marketing of them.

CONDUCTING ASSESSMENTS If you have the ability to feed cows in separate groups, body condition score cows at the time you preg check. If you feed first calf heifers separately, you can also feed the thinner cows with them so they can compete better and get access to more feed.

ADMINISTERING VITAMIN A With the current drought much of the Midwest is experiencing, you can expect that the vitamin A content in harvested forages and grazed pastures may be lowered. If you feed a total mixed ration in the fall or winter, you may

72

November 2023 | THE STOCKMAN

consider adding a vitamin A pack to the ration. This can be done very cheaply per head and works very well. The other possibility is to use some form of injectable vitamin A product. This also works very well and will provide enough vitamin A to store in the liver for three to four months. The downside of injecting vitamin A is that reactions are fairly common, especially if given at the time other vaccinations are done. If giving at the same time as other vaccinations, it is best to give vitamin A on one side of the neck and give other vaccinations on the opposite side. Most of these reactions are transient and not fatal, but I have talked to producers who have lost cows after using the injection. It would be prudent to keep epinephrine on hand when injecting vitamin A.

FEEDING PROTEINS As cows are kicked out on stalks, be sure their protein needs are being met. This can be done with protein tubs, lick tanks or other means. The main role of protein is to feed the bacteria in the rumen that break down the cellulose in forage to make it digestible. The other role of protein is to increase intake of forages. Studies have shown that cows consuming a diet at 5 percent protein will consume about 1.6 percent of their body weight, whereas cows consuming a diet at 7 percent protein will consume 2.3 percent of their body weight. Protein is also critical for fetal programing and restriction will adversely affect the fetus

THE STOCKMAN | November 2023

affecting its epigenome. When fetal programing is affected in a negative way, it will cause issues that will affect the calf after birth. Replacement heifers that have had optimal fetal programing will produce better and stay in the herd longer. Also, calves born to cows that are restricted on energy and protein can have increased morbidity and mortality. Some of these problems can be attributed to lower birth weights. Another good source of protein is raw soybeans. If there are harvested soybean fields adjacent to the stalk field, cows can benefit from gleaning the soybean stubble. There are also oils in the raw soybean that will help to develop brown fat in the calf prior to birth. Brown fat is a primary energy source for newborn calves and can help to increase viability and the calf’s ability to deal with stress at birth such as inclement weather and colder temperatures.

fects the oil in a way that it will not develop brown fat in the calf in the same way that the raw soybeans will. Years ago, I actually had a client that was having issues with calf viability at birth and the next year he fed his cows 1 pound of soybeans per cow starting one month prior to calving. The results he reported were very good. Calf viability was greatly improved. He stated that if he didn’t get the calf tagged shortly after birth, he was having trouble getting the calf caught to tag. These are just a few of the many things to think about as we get closer to winter, but we feel these topics are high on the priority list and can make a big difference when calving starts. learn more collisonembryoservices.com Dr. Vince Collison is co-owner of Collison Embryo and Veterinary Services PAC in Rockwell City, Iowa.

Tell us about yourself.

I grew up on a dairy and hog farm in southern Wisconsin but quickly adapted to the Angus world after meeting my husband at the Wisconsin State Fair. My husband, Terry, and I own Marda Angus Farms, LLC. It is his family farm that was founded in the 1890s. Angus was introduced here as a 4-H project for my father-in-law in 1941 and we still have cow families dating back to those original females. My mother-in-law is still a part of the operation, and checks pasture every day at 92 years old. Terry and I have three children who are all still active with the farm. Cody farms full time with us. His wife, Tracy, is our nutritionist and together they have two children, Levi and Paisley. Our middle son, Brady, works off the farm but is here helping every day after work and on the weekends, with his specialty being machinery. He is married to Carrie, and they have one son, Lane. Our daughter, Bailey, and husband Dave, have a daughter Sterling. Bailey manages our direct beef sales and marketing. We run 275 Angus cows, and we recently took over my mothers-in-law’s family’s Shorthorn herd, Miller Farms, which originates to 1908. We raise corn, soybeans, alfalfa, and sweet corn on 750 acres and 500 acres of pasture. Two years ago, I retired from the Wisconsin Beef Council and today I am the jackof-all-trades for the farm. I manage the financials and fill in wherever needed as the farm uber driver or I operate the “Naughty Nanna Daycare” when needed for the grandchildren.

Where did you learn to cook?

Growing up, I watched my mom prepare meals for the help on our farm. I also participated in the 4-H foods unit. Earlier in our marriage the farm also raised tobacco and would sometimes have a crew of 10 to 15 people. I also wanted to provide our help with a good meal to keep them fueled for the full day. At that time, my husband’s grandmother was living in the upstairs of our house. She lived until she was 102 and was active to the end. She loved to make the desserts for the day, and said it reminded her of her threshing days. She always commented about how she was amazed that I didn’t always follow recipes but would get the results I wanted. My family is pretty basic meat and potatoes eaters, so it seems that Cowboy approved recipes used by our favorite country cooks. we gravitate towards the basics.

What is your favorite cooking tip/trick?

When cooking I am known for adjusting as I go. When I don’t have the exact thing that is called for, I will improvise. My thought is a recipe is mine to tweak if necessary and that all recipes were started as an “experiment”. When I am baking, I try to stay in “the lines” as much as possible.

What is your favorite thing to make?

One of my most popular desserts is Apple Dapple Cake. There are a few friends and family who claim this as their favorite dessert. One person even packed a whole cake in their carry-on and took it home with them on the plane. learn more mardaangus.com for printable recipes stockmanmag.com

HOT CHIP DIP Ardel Quam

1 lb. hamburger 1 can Hormel chili with beans 1 bunch of green onions, chopped

1 can green chilies, chopped 1 lb. Velveeta cheese, cubed

Brown hamburger in skillet, stirring until crumbly; drain. Mix all ingredients in baking dish. Bake at 275 degrees Fahrenheit for 60 minutes. Serve warm with tortilla chips. Hot Chip Dip is always requested by the family. If you like a bit more kick, I have added Rotel diced tomatoes and green chilies or salsa. It can also be made in a slow cooker (easier to transpor t).

BARBECUED MUFFIN MEATBALLS Ardel Quam

Ingredients for sauce: 6 T. brown sugar ½ cup ketchup ¼ tsp. nutmeg 2 tsp. dry mustard

APPLE DAPPLE CAKE Ardel Quam

Ingredients: 2 eggs 1 c. oil 2 c. sugar 1 tsp. salt 2 tsp. vanilla 3 c. flour 3 c. heaping apples

1 tsp. baking soda 1 / c. milk 3 1 c. chopped nuts Topping ingredients: ½ c. shortening ¼ c. milk 1 c. brown sugar

First beat together eggs, oil, and sugar. Then mix in the rest of the cake ingredients, stirring in the apples last. Bake in a 9x13 inch pan at 350 degrees Fahre nheit for 35 to 40 minutes. Topping: Boil shor tening, milk, and brown suga r for three minutes. Pour over the cake while it is still warm .

Sometimes I only make half of a topping batch , so the cake is not so sweet. Also, I usually make two and either divide up between us and the kids or will freeze one to have on hand. I got this recipe from my sister, who got it from her mother-inlaw; so, it’s a recipe that has passed many years of enjoyment.

THE STOCKMAN | November 2023

Ingredients for meatballs: 1 lb. ground beef 1 lb. ground pork 2 eggs 1 ½ c. seasoned dry breadcrumbs 1 tsp. salt ½ tsp. black pepper 2 T. finely chopped onion

Combine sauce ingredients in a small bowl and set aside. Combine the meats, eggs, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, onion, and half of the sauce. Mix gently until all ingre dients are blended. Shape mixture into 12 balls and place in 3-inchdeep muff in pans. Make a small indention in each ball and fill with remaining sauce. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. The first couple of times I made these I used the muffin pan and then I changed to using a cake pan. I also will double the sauce to have more to pour over them. I will usually doubl e the batch and freeze a pan for a last-minute meal or unexpected company - on a farm it will happen.

Liquid feed supplements from Westway Feed Products provide cattle producers with another viable option for meeting their herd’s nutritional needs. Cattle producers have numerous choices when it comes to what to feed their animals, and liquid feed is certainly a choice worth a second look. Liquid feed combines molasses and adds protein or fat and converts those ingredients into a nutritious and efficient livestock feed. “It’s a really neat sustainability story - taking these by-products from other industries and making them into a product that complements forages to feed rumen bugs,” Cheramie Viator, Westway Feed Products Marketing Manager, said. “Liquid feed products use a synergistic approach to increase forage digestibility and utilization.”

USED FOR MULTIPLE SECTORS Westway Feed Products is the largest liquid feed company in the U.S., boasting 25 domestic plants and a plant each in Canada and Mexico. Owned by Man Liquid Products, which is under the umbrella of ED&F Man, Westway can exercise its buying power to source molasses and other co-products from around the globe to feed cattle from literally coast to coast in the U.S. While Westway Feed Products delivers liquid feed products for the cow/calf, dairy, and feedlot sectors of the agriculture industry, the company also creates products for industrial and feed mill businesses. 88

CO-PRODUCTS FOR LIQUID FEED Some of the co-products used in generating liquid feed products are as commonplace as molasses, corn steep, condensed corn distiller’s solubles, whey, and glycerin, and as diverse as cherry juice and pomegranate, according to Viator. In addition, Westway sources a lot of ingredients with sugar from corn processing facilities, but the company is careful to utilize co-products with enough sugar to drive digestion. “Co-products also have to have enough protein (nitrogen) to power digestion in the rumen,” Dr. Kelly Sanders, Westway Feed Products Director of Research and Development, explained. “We combine corn steep from the corn processing industry and other protein sources. We try to balance that out to supply customers with an economical yet nutritious supplement that boosts intake and keeps cows in good body condition through the winter.” According to Dr. Sanders, liquid feed products are produced using a couple of technologies that help nutrients be more available to the cattle. “For instance, for some formulations we use a suspension tech-

nology that utilizes clay, molasses, and other co-products to build a matrix where trace minerals are suspended throughout the liquid feed,” Dr. Sanders explained. “We test all of the liquid feeds and feed additives to make sure everything stays in suspension.” Another technology Westway Feed Products uses is blending urea, molasses, and other co-products with nutritional value to alter the pH of the liquid supplement. Based on the time of year, providing cattle with a liquid supplement at the right pH can manage their feed intake. “If a cow’s nutrients are restricted, the cow will need to eat more, so we work with our customers to help them determine the best course of action,” Dr. Sanders shared. “We can even make specific adjustments for

customers at our production plants, since we have a lot of agility with production.” “It’s not just molasses,” Viator said. “In addition, liquid feed offers a convenience factor and efficiency. Tanks can be moved across a pasture to better utilize forage and liquid feed can be supplied with minimal waste or shrink.”

LIQUID NUTRITION Something beef producers might not know about liquid feed products is that they have a significant amount of dry matter. According to Dr. Sanders, most liquid feed prod90

ucts fall into the 55 to 68 percent range of dry matter. “Dry matter intake is important,” Dr. Sanders said. “With liquid feed, all the nutrients are there, and the ingredients encourage forage digestion in the rumen.” He also noted that there has been some misunderstanding about the combination of urea and molasses. “Historically, when liquid supplements were first designed and fed, the technology wasn’t available to understand how to manage intake or make as high-quality supplements as we do today,” Dr. Sanders said. “What we’ve learned is that urea (nitrogen), and sugar are extremely

Leaving liquid feed out yearround can provide an excellent feed resource for cattle and results in more consistent body condition scores. According to Dr. Sanders, “Research shows that it’s much more expensive to get a cow caught up on body condition and ready to breed than to maintain her throughout the year using liquid feed and your forages.” “We are strong believers in fetal programming, and annualized access to liquid feed allows correct fetal development across all trimesters. Long term, this fetal programming results in additive benefits for healthier calves, increased breed up in the next generation of heifers, and even potential marbling benefits,” Viator said. Utilizing liquid feed for calves during the weaning process can also help calves transition to feed quicker, thus keeping them healthier and potentially helping producers reduce drug costs. learn more westwayfeed.com

BUILDING HEREFORD’S SUCCESSFUL FUTURE Young breeders embrace opportunity at the breed’s inaugural Seedstock Academy.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – “Being a young producer in the breed, this is a really important time to get a broad perspective on what the industry is doing as a whole and all of the different dynamics within the Hereford breed,” says Jacob Rausch, Rausch Herefords, Hoven, S.D. “That way, when I’m back home at my operation, I’m taking all of those things into consideration. I’m not getting tunnel vision or pigeonholing myself. It’s going to create an opportunity for more success.”

96

Shayne Wiese, Wiese and Sons, Manning, Iowa. “The connections alone, and the camaraderie has been outstanding. Also, getting a crash course into a lot of these Association programs is very, very helpful to me.” “It is a really great learning experience, not just for what we can do better every day, but how we can think through things and make things better for the long term,” says Emilee Holt, NJW Polled Herefords, Decker, Mont. “The Seedstock Academy multiplied a normal learning experience by 10. The people you were surrounded with multiplied that times another five.” Designed with Intention “The Hereford Seedstock Academy is the logical extension of the breed’s intentional leadership development, which is a key part of the AHA’s strategic plan,” explains Jack Ward, AHA executive vice president. “Members of the Seedstock Academy have already established themselves as high-achieving individuals with years of committed Hereford seedstock production experience despite their young age.”

Rausch was one of six young Hereford breeders selected to attend the American Hereford Association’s (AHA) first Seedstock Academy, an intensive week-long opportunity in September to learn more about current beef industry dynamics, to network and share ideas with other seedstock and commercial producers.

Shane Bedwell, AHA chief operating officer and director of breed improvement emphasizes the week’s curriculum was designed to provide participants tools and information to benefit their operations, their customers and the Hereford breed.

“As a young breeder, it’s exciting to see what we can do to further improve this breed. It’s been really nice to branch off and see the different environments people operate in, but all come together and talk about the value of Hereford cattle throughout the United States,” says

In-depth discussion areas and tours included: the breed’s National Reference Sire Program (NSRP) at Olsen Ranches, Harrisburg, Neb., the breed’s mainstay NRSP herd; visits with leading commercial cow-calf producers, stocker operators and cattle feeders; insight to

the pioneering AHA collaborative sustainability research project with AgNext and Colorado State University; Hen House Local Markets, a premier Certified Hereford Beef® retailer; and leveraging individual breeder brands with the AHA brand. “I come from the commercial side of the business, and I happen to raise registered cattle. For these young Hereford breeders to grasp what’s going on every day in the commercial part of our business is huge,” says Bill Goehring, AHA president. “These young leaders had the opportunity to delve into key facets of each commercial sector during the week and what that means to their operation, their commercial bull customers and the breed.” Goehring and his family raise Hereford seedstock, run commercial cows and operate a sale barn near Libertyville, Iowa. “This group was amazing,” Bedwell says. “Their ideas, their openness, their willingness to share their thoughts. It was apparent that this breed is on a powerful trajectory with the talent that we have in this class.” Detailed Insights “I’m really excited about the work we’re doing as a breed and breed association to capitalize on the breed’s advantages in crossbreeding, and the research we are doing to keep ahead of the curve when it comes to consumer concerns about sustainability,” explains Tyler Schultz, Sandhill Farms, Haviland, Kan. “I’ve been a part of a lot of different young stockman groups, but to have one with people in the same business as me is rare.” “My favorite part about the experience was getting to network with November 2023 | THE STOCKMAN

RED ANGUS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA BRING IN TWO NEW MARKETING SPECIALISTS

“I have been a consultant and done marketing for many different segments of the beef industry, but I always come back to the value of the brood cow,” Ohlde said. “I find Red Angus to be the type of cattle that can survive in a variety of climates and cowherds to make a positive impact.”

DENVER, Colo. — The Red Angus Association of America is pleased to announce two new additions as commercial marketing specialists - Cory Peters and Taylor Ohlde. These individuals will be traveling extensively to ranches and sales to promote RAAA marketing programs, conducting audits for the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program and working closely with commercial producers to achieve their individual herd goals. Peters derives from Dorchester, Nebraska, and holds a deep passion for the cattle industry. He earned two bachelor’s degrees in animal science and grazing livestock systems from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2016. Since then, Peters has worked at Lone Creek Cattle Co. as the cattle procurement agent and data management coordinator. Ohlde hails from Winchester, Kansas, and has been working closely with cattle producers and helping them maximize their breeding programs for more than a decade. Ohlde obtained his bachelor’s degree in animal science/business from Kansas State University in 2018 after receiving his associate degree from Hutchinson Community College. Ohlde brings experience in animal nutrition, sales and marketing to the association, most recently serving as a feed sales specialist at Cen-

RAAA is excited to have both young professionals working with producers. Peters and Ohlde both started their positions Sept. 11. “We are pleased to announce the hiring of Cory Peters and Taylor Ohlde as new additions to our commercial marketing team,” said Tom Brink, RAAA CEO. “Both have tremendous industry backgrounds, along with the educational foundation and service-oriented mindset to assist our breeders and commercial bull customers in a variety of ways. Our vision is to take Red Angus to the next level, and Cory and Taylor will help us accomplish that.” For more information about the Red Angus Association of America or marketing programs for Red Angus-influenced cattle, visit RedAngus.org. -FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Receiving the award and representing his team was the Houston Plant Manager, Tommy Flowers. The plant produces feed mill products (used to manufacture livestock pelleted and textured feeds), dairy (used to provide liquid sugars, help reduce ration sorting, improve forage utilization and add nutritional benefits), and beef (used to provide liquid sugars, as a carrier for protein and other nutrients and to help improve forage utilization) liquid feed supplements. Last year the Houston facility produced and shipped 148,000 tons. The company keeps detailed tracking of quality and productivity performance. In the last year the plant’s team improved productivity by 10%, decreased labor costs by $3.44 / ton and increased tons by man hours by 5.13. The Westway team also installed two new mixing tanks in an effort to improve mixing performance and efficiency. At the plant and integral to their success is a focus on employee training and safety programs.

When asked about the award Flowers said, “I am extremely proud of our team. They have focused on the company’s strategies of safety, customer centricity and performance excellence. We have all worked together to make improvements, provide excellent quality products and produce liquid feed supplements and mill products that help our customers to succeed.” Westway Feed Product’s Houston plant is one of twenty-five liquid feed manufacturing facilities across the U.S, Canada, and Mexico. As the largest livestock liquid feed company in the world, Westway is a research leader in the liquid feed industry and provides supplements to the beef, dairy, feedlot, and industrial segments. They utilize co-products from other industries to create products that support upcycling of forages. This co-product concept is the foundation for Westway’s respected sustainability story.

A conversation with everyday Stockmen,

Nate & Jayna Frederickson Frederickson Ranch of Spearfish, S.D.

Which animal (any species) has left the greatest impact on you? Hereford cow FHF 409 Rita 21W. She produced several breed impacting herd sires and helped propel our Hereford business.”

Your favorite non-ranch activity to do in your free time? Archery hunting elk.”

Describe your worst day. There are very few worst days when you get to do what you love. Maybe a most embarrassing day. I headed to the vet clinic with an OB cow. I backed up to the loading chute and to my surprise, I had no cow. I had forgot to latch the sliding door and it jiggled open. I found her grazing in the road ditch two miles from town.”

What is your least favorite job on the ranch? Night calving.”
