The sights and sounds of the fall season are in full swing! Farmers are harvesting crops, freshly weaned calves are bawling, and winter feed is being stockpiled. After months of work, time, and patience, the fruits of our labor are finally being gathered in this season.
I just love all things about fall. Sweatshirts, Crockpot soups, and hot coffee on those cool 50 ° mornings, just to name a few. I’ve been craving some fresh apple crisp, so I’ll have to add that to my to-do list. The warm, sweet smell of cinnamon filling up a home is almost irresistible!
Enjoy these autumn days!

Originally, Roy joined Summit Farms to care for and train the oper ation’s Percheron draft horses. Less than two years into his new position, Summit Farms’ owner asked Roy to also manage the purebred cow herds. Roy had been working with draft horses since childhood, but he had only a touch of experience in the cattle industry. However, his life experiences had prepared him for most anything. “I grew up in an Amish family in Ohio doing every thing from milking dairy cows to cutting wood,” Roy Miller shared.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Roy Miller balances management of popular purebred cattle and draft horse operations.

oy Miller landed his dream job in the fall of 2009 at Summit Farms in Hubbard, Iowa. After working for years in the agriculture industry, his boyhood aspirations of managing a show horse operation had come true. Though he didn’t know it at the time, this new opportunity would also lead him to a greater love for cattle and to the love of his life. In July of 2021, Roy married the wom an of his dreams, Rita Mae.

Summit Farms’ purebred cattle operation is comprised of Charo lais, Angus, Simmental, and Red Angus. The operation also main tains a herd of SimAngus cattle. Summit Farms has raised purebred,
800,000 hogs a year, and collabo rates with cattle producers to de velop commercial beef. In addition, Summit Farms owns the purebred cattle and Percheron draft horse op erations in Hubbard, Iowa.
PUREBRED CATTLE HERDS
of agriculture related businesses. Summit Farms started 30 years ago as a 300-acre corn and soybean farm in Iowa. Today Summit Farms works with producers to farm more than 14,000 acres of corn and soy beans, owns hog buildings in part nership with producers to raise
registered Charolais longer than any of its other breeds. The farm start ed the Charolais herd in the early 2000s. Through the years, Summit Farms’ Charolais genetics have excelled and are desired by many breeders in the industry. The oper ation has raised Charolais national champion females and bulls.
All the cattle in the purebred herds are registered and bred via artificial insemination (AI), before being ex posed to a herd sire. When selecting AI or herd sires, Roy evaluates the bull’s EPDs. “We try to keep to the basics when selecting sires. A lot of people want to go to the extreme,” Roy said. “We want something more moderate with a birthweight in the top 10 percent and that is high in growth.”
The bull’s pedigree also plays an important factor in whether he is cho sen to be used at Summit Farms. The potential AI or herd sire must have a pedigree that is recognizable and ap pealing to Summit Farms’ commer cial and seedstock customers.

Summit Farms manages close to 40 Charolais, 80 Angus, 40 Red Angus, and 140 Simmental and SimAngus. The herds all calve in late winter or early spring. The first calves hit the ground in late January and the last calves are born by the first of April. This calving window works for Summit Farms to get an age advantage on bulls that are sold the following spring.
The operation utilizes later calv ing cows from the purebred herds as its recipient cows. After the em bryo is implanted, the cow is turned out with a registered, purebred bull. “If we do that, we still have a regis tered calf if the embryo pregnancy fails. That way you don’t lose a lot of value in the calf and don’t have money tied up in commercial recip cows,” Roy stated.

Summit Farms started its pure bred operation with Charolais cattle, then added Angus, Simmental and Red Angus. The operation pur chased Simmental in 2016 and Red Angus in 2017 with the goal of fur ther diversifying its genetics. “The big thing was our bull market; for example, black cattle are popular in Iowa. In order to have more diver sity and different genetics available for our customers, we added a few other cattle breeds,” Roy explained.
BULL BUSINESS
Most all of Summit Farms’ bulls and females are sold via private treaty. Roy has spent his tenure at the operation building a large bat tery of repeat customers. Each year a few new buyers come to the farm looking for show calves, bred heif ers, cows, or herd bulls. The opera tion sells close to a hundred heifers and cows each year.

The calving time frame also en sures the calves are born before spring rains create muddy condi tions at the farms. “I can handle cold weather much better than I can take all the mud,” Roy said with a chuckle.
HERD DIVERSITY
Summit Farms has built a loyal base of bull buyers. Each spring the operation sells 75 to 85 bulls rang ing in age from 12 to 16 months. A few of Summit Farms’ bulls are sold each year at the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Performance Bull Sale. rought conditions influenced forage and grain production for nearly two years. Forage and grain yields are expected to be some where between 1/3 and ½ of normal. Pasture yield is also low or already out. Feeding and managing cows while coping with these conditions is a challenge complicated further by costs associated with feed de livery. Cow-calf producers must incorporate three considerations that greatly affect cow feeding costs under current economic conditions: feeding group size, energy density of feed and fuel cost.
livery over groups to feed is an ad ditional consideration under current economic conditions.

COPING WITH DROUGHT AND HIGH INPUT COSTS
Alfredo DiCostanzo, Nebraska Extension Educator University of NE - Lincoln, UNL Beef news.unl.edu
Energy density of the feed ingre dient selected is directly proportion al to its volume. A full bucket on a 6-foot skid steer contains 800 lb of grain but fewer than 200 lb of hay. Loading 800 lb of hay will require four times the amount of movement (time) than loading 800 lb of corn.
Protein requirements of mature beef cows, although low, require that, once diets are formulated, di etary protein concentration is eval uated to determine if it meets re quirements. A minimum of 8% is required by mature cows that just weaned a calf to as much as 12% for lactating cows. Incorporating a high-protein co-product, such as distillers grains and solubles, is one way to properly balance the me tabolizable and degradable protein requirements of cows, particular ly young cows, while reducing the amount of starch cows are expected to consume.
Feeds (or mixed diets) that require extensive preparation time (loading, grinding, mixing, and delivering) will create additional feeding costs not generally considered in least cost ration formulation. Diesel price at $4.50/gallon and fuel use of 4 gal lons/hour determine hourly cost of using a tractor to prepare and deliv er feed at $18/hour. For an operation running diesel-fueled equipment for one hour to feed a group of 50 cat tle under these conditions, the daily fuel cost alone would be $0.36/cow. operators are not used to feeding high-energy diets to cows. Choosing to reduce fuel and feed costs by opting to feed high-ener gy diets requires some preparation. Feeding from 2 to 4 lb of hay is also recommended to manage intake and prevent grain engorgement.
Energy density of the feed ingre dient selected also determines dai ly feeding cost. A bushel of corn grain is currently selling for $7.50 ($13.39/cwt) while a ton of hay may be purchased anywhere from $130 to $200/ton. Assuming a producer would purchase hay at $150 ($7.50/ cwt) containing 15% moisture and 55% total digestible nutrients (TDN), the cost per unit of TDN would be $320/ton ($16.04/cwt). A ton of TDN from $7.50-per-bush el corn would be $346 ($17.29/cwt) considering corn grain contains 12% moisture and 88% TDN. If the TDN requirement of a cow is 15 lb/ day and using feed price examples described above, the daily require ment may be met using 27 lb of hay ($2.41/cow) or 17 lb of corn grain
($2.59/cow). As already proposed, the difference, $0.18/cow, may be lost if feeding equipment (tractor or tractor and mixer) must run for an additional 30 minutes while feeding hay.Cow-calf

When the hours are long and the tasks overwhelming, the motiva tion to keep going comes from a deep-rooted desire to leave a lega cy planted in agriculture. “Being a part of the story of agriculture and helping feed a hungry nation it is not always the most glamorous and it’s not always pretty, but the drive comes from doing it with your fami ly and being able to have something to go to the next generation,” Turner Armitage shared.
he volume of cattle A Bar Ranch manages and markets in a year’s time ranges from 5,000 to 10,000 head. And that’s just the begin ning of the workload. A Bar Ranch is owned and operated by several members of the Armitage family. They run their operation on approx imately 9,000 acres of owned and leased land stretching from ranch headquarters in Claremore, Okla., to properties south of Dallas, Texas.
Mike and Martha Armitage founded A Bar Ranch 35 years ago. Their sons, Merrit and Turner, grew alongside the ever-expanding oper ation. “My parents had a burning passion for agriculture,” Turner said.Mike and Martha both grew up in ranching families and shared a love for the agriculture industry. “It was all grassroots,” Merrit Armitage said. “Dad was a registered breed er, worked for multiple operations,
RANCH ROOTS
In the beginning, A Bar Ranch raised Hereford cattle. But it wasn’t long before the Armitages sensed a need for change. They transitioned the herd to tiger striped cattle, then began adding in Angus genetics. As their operation grew, so did their need to diversify. In the decades to come, the Armitages would build a large-scale multifaceted cattle oper ation, a marketing business, and a Quarter Horse program.
A Bar Ranch’s versatile operation includes a traditional Angus-based cow/calf herd, purchased cattle to develop and market, and a vibrant Quarter Horse program. Addition ally, the family runs its own auc tion, Armitage Livestock, hosting three sales a year: two cow auctions and one horse auction.
served as a manager and consultant, and then took on his own endeavors.”
Merrit and Turner spent their childhoods soaking up all the knowledge their parents imparted to them about running a successful ranch. “We are really fortunate our father had the foresight to do some of the things he did to better include us in the day-to-day and also to have it ready for when the day came that he wasn’t here,” Merrit shared.

Ranch continues to thrive under the leadership of Martha. “There is no doubt that we would not be where we are today as an operation without my mother. If my dad was still alive today, he would attest to the fact that it’s not one individual’s success that makes a ranch succeed. It’s a family,” Turner shared.
For decades, A Bar Ranch has followed a culling protocol based heavily on fertility. The Armitages re tain heifers that breed within the first 30 days of a 75-day turn out and then market the rest. “Thirty-plus years now we have selected for those fe males that breed with in the first 30 days, so our females conse quently are more fer tile,” Merrit said.
MARKETING PROGRAM
The family works together as one unit while simultaneously direct ing separate aspects of the ranch. Martha manages the books. Merrit, his wife, Michelle, and their chil dren, Myles and Maysa, oversee the spring herds. Turner and his wife, Sarah, run the Quarter Horse pro gram and fall herds.
Though the Armitages emphasize heifer fertility, they also focus on fertility regarding a female’s second breeding. “The hardest thing out there to breed is a second calf cow, we find that is also where we try to increase our fertility is through breeding of the second calvers,” Merrit said.
If a cow fails to conceive, she goes into the fall herd. If she miss es while a part of the fall herd, she is culled. The long-term strategy of selecting for females based on fer tility has produced offspring that typically breed within 30 days. The consistency of fertility in the herd gives the Armitages the ability to select for other traits as well. After fertility, A Bar Ranch retains fe males with as much ear as possible for heat resistance, longevity, and hybrid vigor.
COW/CALF OPERATION
________ ________
A Bar Ranch’s herd stays 2,500 strong on a regular basis, yet the Armitages market double that num ber of cattle annually. Part of the ranch’s business model includes buying whole herds at dispersals and liquidations. The animals are raised, bred, conditioned, and then marketed via private treaty or auc tion.Merrit and Turner search the country for cattle that will work for their diverse customer base. The Armitages breed their purchased cattle to fit the environments, con ditions, and operations of their customers. “Our customers vary in their demands, and we try to al ways have something that meets the needs of everybody,” Merrit said.
The entire family works together to market cattle and horses. “Just like any good cow herd or brood mare band, the maternal side is where all the power is,” Turner chuckled. “And the same goes for Merrit and I, and our wives, and our mother, they are the foundation of everything that takes place on the ranch. We truly are a family oper ation.”Due to the spread-out nature of the operation, some of their leased properties come with caretakers. Additionally, four fulltime employ ees work alongside the family at the ranch headquarters.
A Bar Ranch operates a tradition al cow/calf operation comprised of primarily Angus cattle with a bit of ear influence. The Armitages run fall and spring herds. On any given day, A Bar Ranch will have as many as 2,500 momma cows to manage.

They maintain a closed herd, bringing in fresh genetics each year through hundreds of Angus bulls from top breeders in the country. After a breeding season, many of the bulls are reconditioned and re marketed through private treaty or through an Armitage Livestock sale.Though the genetics on the sire side are a priority, the Armitag es focus even more intently on the females in their operation. A ma jority of A Bar Ranch’s heifers are retained for breeding and stay in the herd as replacements.
FOCUS ON FERTILITY
QUARTER HORSE PROGRAM
Early on, the Armitages discov ered they needed quality ranch horses to assist with the daily tasks on their cattle operation. However, they were having a difficult time finding the type of horses they needed. As the Armitages started to breed and raise their own horses, they discovered other ranchers also needed similar horses for their op erations.Now30
years later, the Armitages raise Quarter Horses for customers all over the country. A Bar Ranch is a premier Quarter Horse breed ing operation recognized by AQHA as a Ranching Heritage Breeder and was awarded the prestigious AQHA Best of The Remuda Award in 2020. Turner serves on an AQHA Ranch ing subcommittee and Martha was recently appointed to the AQHA Ranching Heritage Council.

Multiple generations of mares are in production at A Bar Ranch. “We can look at a pedigree and essentially tell you what the offspring are going to ride like,” TurnerEverysaid.year, the cowboys at A Bar Ranch ride 20 to 30 colts. “We have a lot of genetic predictability in the performance and the minds of these colts and how they are going to cross,” Turned explained.
Over the decades, A Bar Ranch has developed its equine operation through pedigrees and saddle time. “Most of our females were ridden as young mares to earn and validate their keep,” Turner explained. “So, we know how their minds work, what they are like, what their dispo sitions are like, and how trainable theyEveryoneare.”

A few mares are bred via AI to a handful of outside select stallions, the rest are pasture bred by A Bar Ranch’s stallions. “Everybody always asks, ‘What is the ideal horse we are try ing to breed?’ That’s hard to answer because our main goal is to take each female and each sire and im prove them to get the best possible cross,” Turner commented.

FUTURITY COMPETITION
Though in the past, A Bar Ranch has hosted two sales a year, this year the operation combined the sales into a single two-day event that includes a futurity competition. The futurity is open to contestants competing on horses with the A Bar Ranch brand. The family pledges each year $20,000 in prize money for the event. “It’s been a rewarding process for our customers but also for us to see the finished product of what these cowboys and cowgirls who have got a hold of them have been able to accomplish,” Turner said.

• One week after a killing frost, the plants will be drying down in the field and are once again safe to graze. Many producers choose to delay grazing until a week after the killing frost so that prussic acid concerns are eliminated altogether.
• Delay grazing of these species until plants have reached 18 to 24 inches in height.
• Do not graze new tillers that regrow after mechanical harvest or a light frost that does not kill the entire plant until new growth has reached 18 to 24 inches in height or been killed by a frost and allowed to cure for one week.
Prussic acid can reach toxic levels in Sorghum, Sorghum x Sudangrass, or Sudangrass. It can occur in a few other wild or weedy species, but these three categories are the only planted forage crops that are widely used and need special man agement. Millets do not con tain toxic levels of prussic acid and no millet species need to be considered for special management due to prussic acid at any growth stage. There are two main pe riods during the growth of Sorghum, Sorghum x Sudangrass, or Sudan grass in which prus sic acid management should be considered:
• By the time new growth has reached a point where most pro ducers would consider going to the expense of mechanically harvesting the forage, it has enough growth to be considered safe from prussic acid.•Even if very young growth was cut for hay or silage, the curing or fermentation processes would al low prussic acid to dissipate to safe levels.
Prussic acid, otherwise known as Hydrocyanic acid (cyanide), is a compound released when the cells of certain plants burst under stress ful conditions. These conditions usually correlate with plant damage or very rapid new plant growth.

• For any mechanical harvest of these forages, there is minimal con cern with prussic acid.

• Prussic acid will dissipate from the plant during the curing process for dry hay.
The moral of this story is that although there are valid nutritional concerns, the risks do not outweigh the production potential of these popular forage crops. There are relatively simple steps in management that can be taken to reduce or eliminate issues from prussic acid and nitrates.
• Avoid grazing during the peri od when your first hard frost of the year is likely to occur. If you are actively grazing and a frost event occurs, remove livestock from the crop for about one week.

Nitrate poisoning can occur in livestock if nitrate levels in pri mary forage sources are elevated. Many species, including sev eral common forage crops, can accumulate high levels of nitrates under stress conditions that stunt growth. In forages such as sorghums or millets, if there is adequate to excessive soil nitrogen, but the plant is stunted and unable to convert nitrates into plant pro tein, then nitrates will accumulate in the forage, starting in the lower portions of the plant. This can be caused by various conditions such as drought, hail, frost, or any con ditions that do not kill the plant but prevent normal and healthy growth.
• The fermentation process in producing silage will, in many cas es, reduce nitrates to safe levels for livestock.•Insilage that was high risk for nitrates when it was harvested, it is always best to test prior to feed ing. If proper fermentation has oc curred, the risk of toxic levels of nitrates is relatively low.
Grazing Management
• High-nitrate hay can be blend ed and fed with lower nitrate feed to salvage some value if tests come back above thresholds for the in tended class of livestock.
• The curing process for dry hay will not reduce nitrates to safe lev els on its own.

• Supplementing with low-nitrate forages while grazing high-nitrate forages can help reduce some of the potential for nitrate poisoning.

• Avoid grazing after a light frost that does not kill the plant as the plant will continue to take up ni trates from the soil, but frost dam age will cause nitrates to accumu late for a period of time.
The moral of this story is that although there are valid nutrition al concerns, the risks do not outweigh the pro duction potential of these popular forage crops. There are relatively simple steps in management that can be taken to reduce or eliminate issues from prus sic acid and nitrates.

Crypto will affect the entire in testinal tract, but has an affinity for the small intestine. This causes a malabsorption and maldigestion syndrome. This is why many calves affected by Crypto appear to have diarrhea that looks like undigested milk. It also affects the large intes tine as well and causes the calf to be unable to reabsorb fluids back into its system resulting in dehydration.
critical to prevent spreading. Get ting new calves out to clean areas post calving can greatly reduce the spread. Crypto is very resistant to most disinfectants. Ammonia at 5 percent is effective and also drying of the pens to desiccate the organ ism, probably give the best results.

here are many causes for diar rhea in young calves, but one in fection we’ve seen with higher fre quency in the past couple of years is Cryptosporidiosis. The infection is caused by a coccidian parasite called Cryptosporidium parvum (Crypto). In many herds there is a good vaccination program giv en pre-calving to cows to prevent scours. Also,
many herds give oral prod ucts to calves at birth that are anti bodies for common infections such as E. coli, Corona virus, Rota virus, and Clostridium type C. When we see calf scours in herds that utilize these types of control measures, Cryptosporidium is high on the list.

are depressed, it is nec essary to have an electrolyte prod uct with sodium bicarbonate to con trol acidosis. Almost all calves with diarrhea that need oral fluids will need something for acidosis. As calves become over one week old, they will become more depressed from the effects of acidosis.
Many animals can be carriers of Crypto and not show any symp toms of disease. This organism is shed in the feces and is sporulated at that time, which makes it infec tive immediately. Calves that ingest Crypto can show symptoms within four days.
CRYPTO CARRIERS
CRYPTO PREVENTION
Crypto is an organism that is in fective across other species as well. In addition to calves, it can be car ried by sheep and goats. It can also affect birds and humans as well. We had one herd this year that had large numbers of wild geese in a pasture with a large pond. Cryp to was very hard to control in this pasture and we suspected that these geese may have been causing some of the problems with the spread.
As mentioned before, Crypto can be spread to humans. If you’re treat ing calves with suspected Crypto, be very careful to wash your hands and take measures to prevent the spread to yourself. When dealing with calf diarrhea, work closely with your herd veterinarian to es tablish an accurate diagnosis and form a treatment protocol. learn more collisonembryoservices.com

they will often not be aggressive enough when giving oral fluids. When diarrhea is severe, it may take up to four times per day to keep up with the fluids and electrolytes that the calf is losing. Also, the sooner you start giving fluids, the better chance the calf has of not getting too depressed or dehydrated.
If a calf gets overly dehydrated, it may be necessary to give IV fluids to a calf. There are also some oral products available that provide pro biotics, MOS, and charcoal. We have used some of these and feel there are benefits to using them. These would be ancillary treatments and
Diagnosis of Crypto is hard to do on a fecal sample. The oocysts are five microns and can be easily over looked on a routine fecal. We have had good results sending a rectal swab in to the diagnostic lab and running a diarrhea PCR panel. Of ten this comes back as only Crypto. Negative results on the other causes of infection mentioned tells me our methods of controlling those infec tions are working.

THE ABCs OF GMOs
Agriculture is facing a constant and evolving storm of disinforma tion and misconception. Like many production industries, activists, the media, and the public in general hold agriculture to a high standard for stewardship of the earth’s re sources – its water, air, and soil.
Concerns about agriculture’s im pact on the environment, plus hu man health have been raised with increasing volume for decades, and myths are easily propagated with the use of social media platforms. Over the next several months, The Stockman will feature articles to help its readers debunk some of the untruths disseminated against pro duction agriculture.
Join us in our upcoming series to debunk the misconceptions perpetuated against agriculture!
Since their creation, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have come under fire by many consumers who are concerned about health and safety risks. However, much of the public perception is largely based in assumptions and false claims on so cial media and activist publications.
Similar technology is used to make plants resistant to some her bicides and viruses as well. All have been proven safe for human consumption according to WHO. Further, potatoes and apples specif ically have modified varieties to re duce the browning process that oc curs when they are cut and exposed to oxygen. This reduces food waste as many consumers consider ap ples and potatoes spoiled if they are brown and will throw them away.

that are toxic to insects, larvae, and some nematodes as their diges tive systems are highly basic. The spores do not affect monogastric animals like humans, pets, horses, poultry, and swine or ruminants like cattle and sheep as their stom achs are highly acidic.
Pest resistance of GMO crops is achieved through the incorpora tion of the DNA of a bacterium that produces a toxin used as an insec ticide. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) makes plants used for food and feed resistant to low levels of insect in festation. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Bt is safe for human, pet, and livestock consumption.Btproduces spores to reproduce. The Bt spores produce proteins

If food is not labeled “Non-GMO,” it contains GMOs.
TRUTH: According to a Nation al Institute of Health (NIH) study, there is no measurable difference in mineral, Vitamin C, antioxi dants, fatty acids, and carotenoids contents in the corn varieties in the study compared to their nontrans genic (not GMO) counterparts.
Here is a list of common concerns related to the use and consumption of GMOs along with facts.
Produce, like seedless watermel on, is not genetically modified, but much like livestock it has been bred for this desirable trait.
Misconception 2:
TRUTH: Approximately 25,000 people worldwide die every day of starvation. GMOs are an effective means of producing more food with less land, fewer chemicals, and less labor, according to WHO.
Misconception 3:
TRUTH: Only corn, soybeans, sugar beets, canola, cotton, pota toes, papaya, summer squash, al falfa, pink pineapple, and apples have genetically modified varieties in the U.S., according to the FDA.
GMO plants have lower nutritional value than non-GMO plants.
If I eat meat from a steer or eggs from a chicken that has consumed GMO corn, it will affect my own DNA.
TRUTH: According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), 95 percent of animals used for meat and dairy in the U.S. con sume GMO crops. There is no ev idence that these crops affect the
Misconception 4:
health and safety of animals. The DNA of the GMO feed does not transfer into the tissues or milk of the animal that eats it. If the DNA of GMOs did transfer to the tissues of food animals, cattle would be come grass and chickens would be come corn. Therefore, meat, eggs, and dairy products that come from animals who have consumed genet ically modified crops cannot trans fer genetically modified DNA.
Misconception 1: GMOs are not necessary to feed the world.
According to the American Farm Bureau, on average, one U.S. farm feeds 166 people worldwide each year. With an increasing world population, more emphasis on pro ducing more with less is placed on all producers. The use of GMOs to accomplish that feat is the most ef ficient and cost-effective and is con sidered necessary by many.
2. American Farm Bureau Federation
GMOs can create allergies to foods where they do not exist in their nonGMO varieties.
Higher yields with fewer chemical inputs are necessary to feed a grow ing world population. Food safety is important to all consumers, and peo ple making a living in production agriculture are especially concerned with ensuring a safe and healthy end product while being good stewards to the land and livestock they have been entrusted.

Research indicates GMOs are not only safe, but they are preferable in many cases. The FDA and oth er agencies ensure the safety of the U.S. food supply, and GMOs have historically been subjected to even more stringent tests for safety and nutritional value.
How GMO Crops Affect Our World
TRUTH: Most consumers who subscribe to this notion believe that since most cancers are caused by gene mutations, food that has been genetically modified will cause cancer. Several studies per formed and reviewed by the FDA and American Cancer Society have not found any increased cancer in stance when genetically modified products are consumed.
Misconception 6: GMOs cause cancer.
Mythbusting GMOs
TRUTH: According to the FDA, scientists and other professionals who develop GMOs, are required to run tests to ensure these plants do not produce allergic reactions. In instances where allergic reactions occur, the projects are modified or abandoned.

Where did you learn to cook? ”
If you’ve stayed over or helped out around our farm in the fall or winter, I think most would say my cheese burger soup is a pretty big hit.”
My least favorite job is deciding what’s for dinner, then figuring out if I have all the materials it takes to make it! We are an onthe-go, nonstop from sunup to sundown type of family, so I heavily rely on meal planning on Sundays to map out the week with our schedules.

“We’re a family-owned operation located in eastern Iowa where we run 150 registered Angus cattle. My husband, Joe, was raised here on the farm where we work daily beside his dad, Pat, and his wife, Kris. Our daughters Kyndall age 9, and Kennedy age 7, also do their part in keeping our opera tion moving forward. Kyndall and Kennedy have exhibited cattle at both the local and national level, starting at 3 years old.”

Growing up I was lucky enough to spend most Sundays at my great-grandmother Adelaide’s home. She was a wonderful cook and loved to serve a crowd as she did at our family-owned sale barn cafe for many years. She didn’t follow many recipes; her theory was always taste test and add more of this or that if needed. My grandma was well known for her pies and homemade crusts, but my all-time favorite was her homemade noodles.

Utilize that Crockpot (and the handy Crockpot liners too!). Honestly, I would rather be spending time in the barn working on show cattle with my kids, so I utilize quick, easy recipes I can toss in before we leave for the day.”

s I wrote this article, we have received our first snowstorm of the winter and my four little ones could not wait to throw on their snow pants and go play in the white stuff! Me on the other hand, not so excit ed about leaving the warmth and comfort of my office. It is because they are looking forward to joy and fun and I am dreading frozen wa ters and/or sick cattle. Either way, it is safe to say that winter is upon us!

this fat cattle deal to continue an upward trend going into the new year and into spring. How high we can go, that is the million-dollar question!
Now to look at some of the market reports that we have been seeing in the barns. The fat cattle market has been on a hot streak for several weeks, until this past week, when we experienced a slight dip in the market. We have seen some highs in the mid to high forties, but these have been some extremes. Most cash cattle in the country have been trading at forty level or slightly higher the past couple of weeks. I expect there to be a few bumps in the road, but I expect

A review of the current cattle market.

A review of the current cattle market.
The cull cow and bull market has lagged the fat market, as from all reports there have been around six
The higher fat cattle market is driving a higher price for the feeder cattle market as well, even with the higher feedstuff inputs. We have seen some front end big strings of 800 pounds bringing well into the sixties and some 600-pound cattle bringing into the seventies and eighties. Once again these are some extreme tops. We have been trying to fill up our own lots as fast as possible, as I am not sure the feeder cattle are going to get any cheaper. We have been able to find cattle at cheaper prices than that and so when we do projects they are in the black.
stock market has been up and down as well. Re cently, I heard of some 3-year-old commercial pairs bringing the high $2,000 and then I look around and can buy all the running age cows I want for $1,200 to $1,500. If you are looking to expand, I think now is the time to buy some of the reasonably priced cows, as I think with increased cow slaughter we are going to be in a short cattle sup ply over the next couple of years.

percent more cows slaughtered than last year, making for a fairly good supply of cows. Once this slows down, which will more than likely be into next year, look for the feed cow and bull market to take off with the same fire as the fat cattle market.Thebreeding

The most important lesson you’ve learned in this business?
The most valuable lesson we have learned in this business is that we as seedstock breeders are obligated to our commercial bull customers to commit 100 percent to “breeding genetics” not “rais ing bulls.” We should know in our hearts that the product that we are selling will improve the operation of our customers. Fertility and pounds mean the most here at Janssen An gus, after all, if cows can’t breed and raise a calf every year and do it on mostly roughage and then in ject enough growth potential into their sons, then they don’t need to be bull mamas. The last time I checked we still “sell cattle over the scale!” Pounds are paramount and are the draw to the Janssen program.”

Another animal that has impacted us personally is a worldwide famous sire SAV Resource 1441. Jon was able to purchase and lease Resource for Genex Beef from Kelly Schaff just when the Angus breed needed his “kind” of bull to add muscle, base, and performance in a moderate package without sacrificing maternal greatness.”
We are so excited about the future of the beef business and Angus business in particular. The word Angus has become syn onymous with the word quality. The demand for Angus beef has never been better and there are a few years coming up that are going to be espe cially profitable for the cow/calf sec tor. Finally! With reduced U.S. cow herd numbers and surging demand, we are in for good times! Buckle your seatbelt, it’s going to be one heck of a ride!”
There are several animals that have impacted our oper ation, but a couple have really made us what we are today. Before finding the passion for breeding Angus, Jon was raised on a black Simmental op eration, Janssen Farms, in Pocahon tas County, Iowa. We owned a bull named CNS Dream On with Chris Schick of Illinois. Dream On was a household name in the beef industry and led the Simmental Association breed registration numbers for six consecutive years. Today, his mount ed head hangs above the Janssen family fireplace mantle as a remind er of our heritage in the business!
