Our youngest daughter has started preschool this year. She’s been watching her three older siblings go to school, so she was more than ready to get started. Emmy jumped right in to 2.5 days of school per week and is even riding the bus! Now I am currently sitting in my office - the kids have left for the morning and it still feels so different. Maybe even weird. Half of me just wants to sit and drink coffee and enjoy it while it is still hot, and the other half of me wants to knock out a massive to-do list because I have exactly 6 hours and 37 minutes until I go pick up the kids later this afternoon. What’s a mom to do?! It’s such a bittersweet time - initially hard to accept that the kids are actually growing up but also relieving to have a bit of breathing room, if only for a few hours. But let’s be honest, I’d miss those kiddos too much if they were gone for longer than that!
We are in the middle of the fall season and the weather couldn’t get any better up here. Comfortable sunny days and cool evenings - it’s been beautiful. If only these days would last all year. Wishing everyone a safe and bountiful harvest.

Are You Tired...
We have been producing and selling no-nonsense, ranch-raised bulls for over 30 years.
Bulls are being developed slowly and naturally on nothing but grass.
While others are focused on increasing pounds per animal (bragging rights), we’re focused on increasing pounds per acre (profit).
Because
way our bul ls have been bred and developed, they can breed twice as many cows for twice as many years as bulls coming out of other programs.
Over 500 Bulls — Four Bull Sales
It doesn’t matter how big your cattle are if they’re not profitable.
We evaluate and score our bulls for disposition. Life is too short to put up with idiots.
We also evaluate and score our bulls for fleshing ability, muscling, grass efficiency, thickness, masculinity, hair coat and fly resistance.
What’s a bull worth that can breed twice as many cows for twice as many years. He’s worth a whole lot more than you’ll ever have to pay for him!
If you’re tired of buying bulls that melt and fall apart when you take them home, come check us out.

Meyer Cattle Company operates successful
commercial and registered Angus herds tracking cattle performance from birth to rail.
Meyer Cattle Company owners, Brock and Michele Meyer, balance two distinct yet complementary cattle operations near Bowling Green, Mo. On one hand, the Meyer family manages a commercial cow/calf operation of 400 Angus-based cows, retaining 100 percent of the calves for their feedlot. On the other hand, the Meyers run 400 head of Angus cows in their registered cow/calf program, marketing performance bulls and females. Though managing two different herds brings challenges, Brock and Michele say the benefits outweigh the complications.
Brock grew up working with his dad, Robert Meyer, on the fami-
ly’s commercial cow/calf operation started by Brock’s grandfather. Currently, Brock and his dad execute the day-to-day management for both cattle operations along with three full-time employees. Brock’s wife, Michele, works full time off the farm for FMC Agricultural Solutions, but she’s heavily involved in the cattle operations as time allows. Brock and Michele’s daughter, Lexi, takes the lead in the show barn and assists on the farm when she is home from college. The youngest Meyer, Brock and Michele’s son, Jaxon, is proving to be a farmhand in the making at the ripe old age of four.

COMMERCIAL OPERATION
The commercial segment of Meyer Cattle Company runs as a seamless operation. The calves are weaned at 600 to 700 pounds, then transitioned to Meyer Cattle’s feedlot. All the calves from the commercial program, as well as bulls culled from the registered operation, are developed at the feedlot, and then processed at Creekstone Farms in Kansas.
On average, the Meyers feed out 500 to 550 head each year. Most of the feedlot calves are animals raised in their commercial herd, however the Meyers source some calves from their local registered bull buyers. They strive to keep the genetics tight to maintain consistency and predictability in their product.
All the momma cows in the commercial herd are purchased directly from Basin Angus in Montana or sourced from Basin Angus genetics. While some of the cows in the Meyer Cattle commercial herd are AIed, a majority are bred to Meyer Cattle raised bulls in the registered herd. “We use all our own bulls. We do AI some commercial cows, but basically all the commercial cows are bred to our bulls because we are very carcass and growth oriented,” Brock explained.
REGISTERED HERD
In 1996, Brock started to build the registered cattle program segment of Meyer Cattle Company. Close to 125 heifer calves produced in the registered Angus program each year are kept as replacement females for the registered herd. The registered Angus bull calves are developed and sold as yearlings or as age advantaged sires at Meyer Cattle Company’s spring and fall sales. Meyer Cattle Company sells about 50 bulls in each sale.
At the production sales, the Meyers sell all their 7-year-old pairs. At their upcoming fall sale, they plan to sell some 2-year-old and 3-yearold pairs to satisfy their customers in the market for young replacement females.

BREEDING DECISIONS
The strategy to obtain balance within the cattle operations is evident in the Meyer’s breeding program. They make mating decisions based on the goal of producing progeny with solid, well-rounded
EPDs. “We strive for a very balanced EPD profile which has kept us grounded,” Brock Meyer explained. “We don’t focus on any one trait. We focus a lot on growth and carcass, but we do keep all these heifers back so maternal traits are important as well.”
In addition to emphasizing EPDs, the Meyers place importance on an animal’s phenotype. “We also put a lot of emphasis on phenotype because we like to look at cattle. We like a good-looking cow. We like that picture perfect Angus cow,” Brock said.
THE STOCKMAN | October 2023 19
20 October 2023 | THE STOCKMAN
To ensure consistent, high-performing cattle, Meyer Cattle Company breeds its cows to bulls that have displayed, through progeny and EPD data, what they can produce. “When we are making breeding decisions, we don’t use very many of the young, popular unproven bulls,” Brock shared. “We breed a majority of our cows to the proven bulls that we know have calves on the ground and have predictability. We cannot afford to strike out.” When the Meyers occasionally utilize a young bull, the bull’s sire and dam must have predictability in their pedigree and progeny.
While some operations of their size may choose to utilize many AI sires, the Meyers operate with merely a handful of different AI bulls. This creates same sire groups, which is desirable to their bull buyers. Many of their bull customers run large cattle operations and want multiple bulls out of the same sire for their herds.
Meyer Cattle Company’s customers often seek bulls that are sired by Angus bulls that have longevity and prominence within the breed. “A lot of our customers are commercial cattlemen who want that sire recognition, so that also leads us to have a majority of our bulls out of wellknown sires within the breed that also matches the balanced approach we have taken in selection,” Michele Meyer stated.
BULL BUSINESS
The selective nature of the Meyers’ program boosts performance in their herds as well as gives their buyers confidence in the bulls purchased from Meyer Cattle Company. “We are using our registered bulls on our commercial cows, and we can tie those bulls all the way through to finishing. We can see how those bulls’ progeny have done on the rail and how they have grown. So, it does help the predictability of our bulls when they are proven like that,” Brock explained.

their operation from start to finish. This attention to data provides Meyer Cattle Company with relevant information on their cattle’s performance. “The proof is in the pudding in terms of how our registered bulls mature, how they bred cows, and how their calves are able to perform. Whether that is at weaning or that’s as we load them on the trucks, we are able to get that carcass data back and watch and track it,” Michele said.
The Meyers utilize the data when making future breeding decisions. In addition, Brock and Michele seek feedback from their customers to help them determine matings and herd sire selections.
AGE ADVANTAGED
Meyer Cattle Company markets yearling bulls and age advantaged bulls. The family develops a large portion of the bulls to 18 months of age and older, giving their customers mature bulls ready to service a larger number of females. “That is something that sets us apart. There’s not a lot of people that can age those bulls like we can,” Michele shared. “It separates us as something we have to offer, our customers love the older bulls.”
The operation’s access to adequate land and resources required to develop older bulls makes it easier for the Meyers to raise bulls past the yearling mark. The bulls are run on grass from yearling to 18-monthsold and supplemented with additional feedstuffs.
22 October 2023 | THE STOCKMAN
GROWING THEIR OWN
The Meyers produce most of the feedstuffs they feed their cattle. They chop corn silage and wheatlage. The family grows, cuts, and bales 4,000 round bales of hay, straw, and corn each year. The Meyers also utilize 2,500 acres for grazing and hay for all their herds.
In 2014, the farm expanded its operations to include row cropping 1,500 acres of corn, soybeans, and wheat. They harvest and store the corn to feed the feedlot cattle. The rest is sold as commodities. The row crop aspect of the business coupled with the commercial and registered herds further diversifies their operation.
Managing such a wide-ranging operation keeps this Missouri family constantly at the top of their game. Balancing a large commercial herd with a topnotch registered Angus herd takes all their energy, all the time. But the Meyers say they wouldn’t change a thing – because the two cattle operations give them the best of both worlds. learn more meyercattle.com

WILL YOU CAPITALIZE ON INCREASING COW VALUE?
cow prices? What is the estimated depreciation that will occur with current 4, 5 and 6-year-old cows in the herd over the next two to three years based on their expected market value as a bred cow this fall and winter? When the projected cost to carry those cows is calculated with expected deprecation, death loss and interest, will anticipated calf prices cover those costs and still make a profit? What will it look like if the market should decline?
What a difference a year makes when it comes to cow prices! Whether it is weigh up cows at $1.10 per pound or young bred heifers and cows pushing $2,500 - $3,000 per head, the recent rise in prices has been dramatic. Many cow-calf producers will sell calves this fall and make a solid profit. For areas that have received rain and forage is available, this will encourage retaining of heifers and the rebuilding of cowherds that have been reduced
due to drought. The motivation of many will be to keep and acquire as many bred cows as possible to produce more high dollar calves.
One of the possibilities current market conditions present is the opportunity for cow-calf producers to capitalize on increasing cow value. Young and middle aged, bred cows are in high demand by the market. Is there an opportunity to sell bred cows in the next two to three years and capitalize on these strong
Selling home raised bred cows offers the opportunity to take full advantage of the fact that all income from those cow sales is taxed as capital gains income. When raised heifers and cows intended for breeding purposes are sold and they are older than two-years of age, those sales are taxed at a capital gains rate. For females that were bought, only the appreciated value above the purchase price qualifies as capital gains income. The reduced tax rate on capital gains income can be a significant advantage when compared to calf or yearling sales which are taxed as ordinary income.
For a married couple filing jointly in 2023, the federal tax rate is

0% on capital gains income up to $89,250 and it is taxed at 15% for income from $89,251 - $553,850. Also, there is no self-employment tax on capital gains income which is 15.3% on ordinary income. The tax
rate on ordinary income is 10% up to $22,000, 12% for income from $22,000 to $89,450 and 22% for income from $89,450 to $190,750. These tax rates are reduced by 20% if the income qualifies for the “Qual-
ified Business Income Deduction.” Visit with your tax accountant for more information on this.
For $150,000 of taxable net income after deductions from ordinary cattle sales, a ranching couple treated as a sole proprietorship would owe approximately $38,000 in federal taxes and self-employment tax. If the taxable net income were from capital gain sales, the couple would owe approximately $9,000 in taxes. This is a difference of $29,000! If you are a cow-calf producer and are thinking of retiring, present high bred cow prices, capital gains tax rates and current tax laws may make this an attractive time to exit the business.
So, what is the point? A conversation with your tax accountant may be warranted as marketing strategies and plans for this fall and winter as well as the next few years are evaluated. Examining opportunities to take advantage of high cow prices by selling more bred cows and simultaneously retaining more heifers could reveal ways to take advantage of the capital gains tax rate which allow for more of the money generated from cattle sales to be kept in the producer’s pocket. Selling home-raised bred cows that may be approaching their cyclical peak in market price and having that income taxed at a capital gains rate rather than as ordinary income could be a significant wealth building advantage! Selling home raised bred cows when prices are high and replacing them with home raised heifer calves could be profitable in the near term for the cow-calf business.

leadership Moving into Angus
The Stoller Family has built a herd of moderate, yet high-performing bulls and females that make other Angus breeders take notice.
Some of the best cattle operations started out as 4-H projects, and Bear Mountain Angus, Palisade, Neb., falls into that category. Brian Stoller showed Hereford and Limousin steers for his first year of 4-H in California, launching a passion for the cattle industry that has lasted a lifetime.
During Brian’s second year of 4-H, his dad, Gary, bought him two Angus heifers from the Thomas Angus Ranch in Oregon, and his interest in the Angus breed was cultivated. “The ranch we lived on at the time was called Bear Mountain Ranch, and so we called my operation Bear Mountain Angus,” Brian Stoller said. “I grew up showing and got involved with the California Junior Angus Association, including going to the National Junior Angus Show and being active on a national level.”

After that change, Brian’s parents retired, and he took over day-to-day operation of the ranch.
Tragically, Gary died in a plane crash in 2012. Davy now resides in California.
NOT CHASING EXTREMES
The Bear Mountain Angus herd has been built back to 350 cows. “It’s a more maternal breed that still has good carcasses and grows well,” Brian said. “They do a lot of things right.”
Brian manages breeding in the herd by either artificially inseminating the cows or implanting them with embryos. He often uses bulls
MAKING CHANGES
By the time Brian left for junior college at San Joaquin Delta College, the operation had grown to a herd of about 100 Angus cows. While finishing his degree at Fresno State University, Gary and his wife, Davy, held a dispersal sale, only keeping a few of their best cows.
The relationships the Stoller family had built during Brian’s show career paid off. In 2001, the family bought a ranch from friends near Melba, Idaho, adding their dozen best cows to a herd of 400. “We stepped in and with guidance from the previous owners and their employees, kept that operation going, hosting a bull sale and making a few changes as needed,” he said.
Five years later, the Stollers sold the land to developers. After originally being told they could stay for a decade, a year and a half after the sale, the family was informed they needed to move in six months.
Once again, show ring relationships saved the day. Gary talked to someone at the National Western Stock Show who introduced them to a realtor. The realtor helped the family purchase their new, 3,700acre ranch in Nebraska in 2008. The Stollers took 150 cows from their Idaho ranch and made the move.

the operation has sent to stud, but also uses outside sires. About 270 cows calve in the spring, with the other 80 calving in the fall. “We want to help our customers by producing bulls and females that will work for our environment,” he said.
The operation hosts an annual bull sale in February, selling about 120 bulls, and a female sale in the fall. Another 30 to 50 bulls are sold through private treaty. At the 2023 annual sale, Bear Mountain North Star was the highest-selling bull, going to Genex for $67,500. The high-selling bull at the 2022 sale, Bear Mountain Pilot, sold for $40,000 to Sitz Angus and Ellingson Angus. Bear Mountain Justice is also in stud with Alta, sired by Bear Mountain Justify.
“We breed most of our females to North Star, Pilot, Justice, and Justify,” Brian said. “Outside of our

own genetics, we use Sitz Domain, Ellingson Prolific, and Woodhill Reality.”
After breeding in May, the herd is turned out on grass, supplement-
ed with salt and mineral. During dry conditions, Brian feeds a liquid supplement called Mix30. The herd grazes on cornstalks in the fall as available.
Calves are weaned in late August or September, and females begin calving in January. After calving, females receive a high-roughage, nonstarch diet. Bulls are developed without corn; a practice Brian says makes them more adaptable during breeding season. “The bulls seem to hold up better and last longer for customers when they’re not fed corn,” he said.
ENJOYING LIFE
Brian and his wife, Tiffany, have two daughters. Reagan is currently pursuing a Master’s in Agricultural Communications at Oklahoma State University, and McKinley is 12. The family shows at the National Junior Angus Show, the Nebraska Angus state show, the Nebraska State Fair, and Aksarben.
Spending more time as a family has led the Stollers to host a major cow herd reduction sale this fall. “It’s hard to find help, and we’d like to downsize so we can enjoy life a little more,” Brian said.

Seeds in Season
Functional forage and pasture.
contributed article by Justin Fruechte, Product Expert - Ag Millborn Seeds, Brookings, S.D. millbornseeds.com
THE BEST CROPS TO PLANT THIS FALL FOR SPRING FORAGE
all planting time is here! This season can be short-lived and a bit more inconsistent from a moisture standpoint when compared to spring, but when planting conditions are good – you need to jump on the opportunity to take advantage of early spring moisture and move your harvest ahead the following summer.
The forage world has taken note of the benefits of fall planting and placed an emphasis on improving winter annuals to thrive in these conditions. As producers, we have more high-quality options than ever to select from.
TRITICALE IMPROVEMENTS
Triticale is one of the crops that has seen vast improvements over the last decade. It was originally developed by crossing cereal rye with durum wheat – a cross that made it great for drought tolerance and winter hardiness. Personally, my favorite attribute of the crop is the fantastic quality.
Research and development placed an emphasis on increasing leaf to stem ratio, giving the plant higher digestibility as a feed and better standability for harvest ease. Also, many of the varieties are now completely awn-less, so you don’t need to worry about lump jaw or abscesses when feeding, like you do with rye or wheat.
Because triticale is such an innovative crop, we sat down for a conversation with Racey Padilla, small grains research director and triticale breeder for TriCal Superior Forage on the Millborn Seeds’ Roots & Ruminants podcast. TriCal Superior Forage has the largest triticale breeding program in North America, and Padilla’s farmer-first perspective fuels his breeding efforts. He’s always trying to improve the stress tolerance and feed quality of the crop.

WINTER WHEAT BENEFITS
The other winter annual that has gained momentum in the Western Plains is forage winter wheat. This plant is a true winter wheat, so if you also grow wheat for grain, it’s a great option to alleviate volunteer issues that could come from other winter annuals.
Montana State University has focused on improving forage winter wheat and most recently released MTF 1435, a very tall, awn-less variety that boasts high grain yields. This summer’s reports of harvested fields were outstanding. They were seeing yields at 3-to-4-ton DM/acre and crude protein levels nearing 12 percent.
Generally, fall planted forages will be ready to harvest two to three weeks sooner than a spring planted forage. You’re fast-tracking your farm’s summer forage plan next spring by planting these quality winter annual options now, and it allows the ideal time to double crop with a warm season annual forage. Utilizing winter annual species that
are higher yielding and higher quality, like triticale and forage winter wheat, will return a higher value to your livestock operation.

new passion
Angus breeder, Heather Smith Trumble, uncovers a unique business opportunity to stay connected in the cattle industry.
to say life doesn’t always go as planned is a bit of an understatement. There are times in some people’s lives when it seems as if everything is unraveling. Long-time
Angus breeder and veterinarian
technician, Heather Smith Trumble, recently found herself in such a place. She spent close to two decades helping build a successful Angus herd for her family and three children. But difficult life circum-
stances forced her to leave her beloved farm life and find a new path.
“I had to walk away from a lot, and this is what I did to stay connected to what I love and move forward,”
Heather Smith Trumble said.

FINDING A NEW WAY
What she did was find a way to supplement her newly acquired full-time job working in a Nebraska hospital’s physical therapy division, with a venture that keeps her close to her network of friends in the cattle industry. Her new endeavor entails working as a Magnawave practitioner. According to the founders of Magnawave, the machines are used to ease pain and inflammation and to promote overall wellness in livestock, pets, and people.
Heather travels the livestock show circuit and to individual operations to work on animals with Magnawave. “I am doing this to keep myself connected to the livestock industry and the people who I enjoy. I love cattle. I loved what we were doing with our kids. Our circumstances changed, and I needed to do what I could to reinvent myself and move forward. I have had tremendous support from my Angus and 4-H families on this venture – they have been wonderful,” Heather shared.
MAGNAWAVE TECHNOLOGY
Heather uses the Magnawave technology to help animals with mild aches and pains, attitude issues or simply to enhance their overall wellness. Though she calls Osceola, Neb., home, Heather branches out to state and national livestock shows to help her clients. So far, she’s utilized the Magnawave technology on cattle, horses, pigs, and dogs. She even received a call asking about treating a llama, but Heather’s veterinary experience led her to suggest the llama needed more serious medical intervention.
Magnawave’s Pulsed Electromagnetic Field is designed as a non-invasive option to stimulate blood flow and facilitate cellular oxygenation. “Magnawave is a Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF), it helps to recharge unhealthy cells with improved oxygenation and circulation, returning them to nor-
mal function,” Heather explained. “PEMF is also said to improve the lymphatic system as well. PEMF can also eliminate toxins resulting in inflammation reduction, improved recovery times and performance in a drug free way.”
Though she works with human patients through her full-time job, Heather leans on her experience as a licensed veterinary technician to guide her when working on
livestock with Magnawave. “My veterinary knowledge helps. I also reached out to several veterinarians, and I have yet to find one that says probably not. All the veterinarians I’ve spoken to are supportive of it that I have encountered because it is a noninvasive, non-manipulating and no needle approach to the overall health and wellness of your animals,” Heather said.

MAGNAWAVE CLIENTS
Working with animals and their owners brings great joy to Heather. She loves to see the difference the sessions make. Many of the animals she cares for with Magnawave are show cattle that need help naturally relaxing or healing from minor health issues. “One of the first heifers I did, the gentlemen told me her attitude had vastly improved. She didn’t like being touched or handled across her top and now she will tolerate it,” Heather stated.
One of the benefits to her parttime job is watching the animals she has worked on succeed in the show ring. Recently, Heather used the Magnawave technology on the Nebraska State Fair Champion Maintainer Heifer and Champion Market Heifer both owned by the Jelinek family.
SUPPORT NETWORK
However, the most significant blessing for Heather rising from the new business venture is the overwhelming support from her friends in the cattle industry. “My Angus family, my cattle and 4-H family have rallied around me, supported me, encouraged me, been my cheerleaders and helped me to
make it,” Heather shared.
In fact, one of Heather’s friends, who she calls an angel, gave her the push she needed allowing Heather to immediately start her Magnawave business. The more shows Heather attends, the more her business multiplies. Word of mouth and testimonials from one livestock producer to another continues to boost Heather’s new endeavor.
For Heather, keeping her foot in the door with people in the livestock industry is worth all the time and effort. “Staying connected to agriculture and livestock and what I love is truly the motivation. It really is about trying to stay connected to something that I fell deeply, deeply in love with,” Heather concluded.

STRATEGIES FOR TRANSFERRING EMBRYOS
ast month I wrote about using the universal ABC form for recording embryo information. This article will go more in depth on how to use some of this information on transfer day, specifically when to transfer the stages listed on the form. Every embryo will be listed with a specific stage and grade. Stages range from 8 to 4, with the 4 being the least advanced embryo and the 8 as the most advanced embryo. We consider the stage to be the age of the embryo based on the following:
• Stage 4 to be a 6.5-day-old embryo
• Stage 5 to be a 7-day-old embryo
• Stage 6 to be a 7.5-day-old embryo
• Stage 7 to be an 8.0-day-old embryo
• Stage 8 to be an 8.5-day-old embryo
TIMING FOR TRANSFER
This is the information we need when trying to determine the timing of when to transfer the embryo to the recipient. Also, we consider the day the recipient cow is in heat to be day 0. So, if you are wanting to put a stage 5 into a cow that is in heat on Monday AM, you would target the transfer for the next Monday AM. If transferring a stage 7 into the same recipient that was in heat on
Monday AM, you would target for the next Tuesday AM. These are the guidelines for transfer timing in the strictest sense. In the real world, we have to plan transfers to fit into tight schedules and to also work with the recipient heats that are available on transfer day.
TRANSFERRING CONVENTIONAL EMBRYOS
If working with conventionally collected embryos, you will likely see mostly stage 4 and 5 embryos. There can also be stage 6 and 7 embryos, but they will be less likely. We typically try to schedule con-
ventional embryo transfer 7 days after the heat. With conventional embryos there seems to be more flexibility in transferring embryos to an asynchronized recipient.
If we are transferring one embryo, it’s pretty easy to line her up for the transfer 7 days later. We will transfer frozen conventional embryos plus or minus 24 hours from day
L

7. On fresh conventional embryo transfers we feel you can go up to 36 hours out of synch and still see good results.
This information is based off experience, and I recall one flush we performed where all the recipients had heats 24 to 36 hours after the donor. These recipients had been set up to transfer a group of frozen embryos a couple days later and I convinced the owner to transfer this nice group of 10 fresh embryos to the recipients so they wouldn’t have to freeze them. In this case we ran 9 out of 10 pregnant on cows that came in 24 to 36 hours behind the donor.
So, if using conventional embryos, we will synchronize recipients so they will be in heat 6 to 8 days prior to the transfer date with the bulk of the recipients in heat 7 days prior. Conventional embryos are typically flexible enough that we don’t spend a lot of time trying to be perfect in the matching of embryo stage to recipient synchrony. Mostly we try to avoid getting any extreme asynchrony such as putting a stage 7 embryo into day 6 recipients.
TRANSFERRING IVF EMBRYOS
If using IVF produced embryos, you will see predominately stage 7 and 6 embryos. There will even be embryos as advanced as stage 8 and some lesser advanced stage 5 embryos. It is very rare to see a stage 4 IVF embryo that has been frozen. In the case of IVF embryos, we feel it is best to be stricter about staging the embryo to the appropriate age recipient heat.
When synchronizing recipients, we typically use a 7 day CIDR program
and schedule the transfer date 10 days after removing CIDRS. We also like to give GNRH to any non-responders 72 to 84 hours after pulling CIDRS to force ovulation and prevent recipients from coming into heat late, eliminating day 6 recipient transfers. Therefore, on the transfer day we will be dealing with only day 8 and day 7 recipients which will align better with the stage 8 – 5 embryos we see with IVF embryos.
So basically, if we pull CIDRS on a Monday, you will see heats on Wednesday (will be day 8 cows) and Thursday (will be day 7 cows) and set the transfer date for the following Thursday. We will have given GNRH later in the day on the Thursday after pulling CIDRS to the recipients that haven’t shown heat yet. We will try to transfer stage 8, 7 and 6 IVF embryos to the day 8 cows and use the stage 6 and 5 embryos in the day 7 cows as much as possible.
GNRH RECIPIENTS
For the non-responders that received GNRH, we will use stage 5 or even stage 6 IVF embryos. If conventional embryos are available, we will often use those on the GNRH cows since they will typically be stage 4 or 5. When it comes time to transfer, we will often run the day 8 recipients through first. It allows us to transfer all of the more advanced embryos (stage 8-7) first and keeps the day 8 cows from advancing to far from the time they were in heat as the day progresses.
If this is not possible, we will
work to match the appropriate stage embryo to when the recipient was in heat as they come through in random order. As we get into the afternoon, this probably is less of an issue as all of the recipients have become more advanced, make precise staging less of an issue. On days where we have large numbers of recipients to run through the chute for IVF transfers, we will have recipients get to 8.5 to even 9 days post estrus at the time of transfer and we will still see good pregnancy rates.
IVF GUIDELINES
We feel it’s important to use these guidelines for staging when using frozen IVF embryos. There have been cases where we did not have specific recipient heats recorded for staging and we still will get along very well. In these cases, we usually did not start transferring until afternoon, which puts the majority of the recipients at a point farther from their heat. This causes more cows to automatically match with more of the advanced stages typically seen with IVF embryos. When using fresh IVF embryos, we feel there is more flexibility in staging embryos to recipients similar to fresh conventional embryos. We try to narrow this down to plus or minus 12 hours in the case of fresh IVF.

PROMOGEN SCORING
Immunologically superior animals are proven to return higher significant gains across all traits: overall wellness, fertility, and feed efficiency.
Profits on overall wellness are realized through in increased response to vaccines and antiparasitic treatments, drastically reducing the incidence of morbidity and antibiotic use.
Fertility is reflected in higher conception rates, reduced risk in early embryonic death, weaning calves at higher weight ratios, and overall retention and longevity in replacement females.
Feed efficiency is directly affected by the body’s ability to ward off inflammation due to environmental stress factors.
Cattle on feed who possess this natural ability have higher conversion rates than their counterparts who are immunologically inferior – all without commanding additional medicine costs and higher overall expenses.
Immunologically superior animals who possess specific Defensen predictive biomarkers are proven to be more profitable, and aide in economic gains through these highly heritable traits for generations to follow.
Choose immunologically superior animals through Promogen Genetic Evaluation. Choose genetic gold.

Protection from
Winter’s Wrath
By Cheryl Kepes photos courtesy Woolover Limited
Company creates products designed to help newborn animals thrive in frigid conditions.
mid devastating loss, a new solution emerged to fulfill a potential need in the livestock industry. After historic snowstorms in New Zealand, shepherd and entrepreneur, David Brown, set out to develop a product focused on minimizing fatality rates in lambs and calves during freezing conditions. “Woolover Limited was born of necessity following two snowstorms, 10 days apart, in August 1992, that claimed the lives of over two million newborn lambs and 40,000 calves in New Zealand,” David Brown, Woolover Limited founder, said.
A decided to search for a way to protect newborn animals from extreme cold conditions. His solution entailed creating covers for newborn animals made of wool and designed in the shape of a jacket to protect the animal’s heart and lungs.
PRODUCT ORIGINS
The impact on farmers reverberated throughout New Zealand following the catastrophic snowstorms. “This huge reproductive waste caused some sheep farmers to exit the industry and caused the meat industry real grief with lower stock numbers. I personally had previously been running 3,500
ewes and had experienced losing substantial numbers of newborn lambs due to southerly storms that sweep into the eastern province of Canterbury, New Zealand,” David said.
Heartbroken by the loss of livestock throughout the region, David

left A calf found in freezing water. above The same calf four weeks later after wearing a calf jacket.
Woolover Limited launched its first product line consisting of lamb jackets made from wool in 1993. “We actually sold 50,000 Woolover lamb covers in the first eight weeks, so the need was there,” David stated. Through the years the company has added new products to meet the needs of livestock producers. Woolover Limited currently manufacturers lamb and calf jackets as well as covers for larger livestock in Christchurch, New Zealand and exports the products to more than 15 countries, including the United States.
PRODUCT DESIGN
David’s idea for the design of the original lamb cover involved creating a product that would protect the animal’s heart and lungs while also being readily accepted by the ewe. He took his design plan to a senior scientist at locally based, Wool Research, to get advice on how to make a product that would stretch and grow with the lamb the first three weeks of its life. If the lamb could make it past the three-week mark, it had a much better chance of thriving no matter the weather conditions.
The solution involved using wool for the jackets and needle punching the wool into a structure. Wool serves as a good material source for the product because it generates and retains heat even when it is wet. The natural wool fibers breathe allowing the animals wearing the jacket covers to be warm without sweating.
According to Woolover Limited, wool takes on one-third of its weight in water drawing water away from the hide of the animal keeping the animal warm and dry. The wool jackets easily dry out and can be washed and reused.
TESTED IN THE U.S.
After launching the jackets for lambs, the company expanded its products to include calf covers. Much like the design for the lambs, the calf jackets are manufactured using wool and created to keep a calf’s body warm including the area surrounding its heart and lungs. Producers who use the calf jackets state their calves have a better rate of gain because the calves are not using energy to stay warm.
Shortly after Woolover Limited started producing the animal covers, World Wide Sires located in California, reached out to the company to inquire about conducting a clinical trial with the use of the jackets on dairy calves. The trial was conducted at North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D., with 120 dairy calves. Half of the calves received the Woolover jackets at birth and the other half did
not. “All calves were weighed upon entering the trial and the high and low temperatures recorded daily, plus wind speed and humidity,” David explained. “After 60 days the result was the Woolover covered calves weighed on average 16 pounds heavier liveweight versus those uncovered calves.”
A year after the initial study, another trial was conducted resulting in findings similar to the first clinical trial. Through the years, the company has worked with producers to make improvements to the lamb and calf jackets.
PRODUCT EXPANSION
Due to the success of the original products, Woolover Limited expanded its offerings. The company now manufacturers covers for larger animals and calf covers with waterproof outer shells. Additionally, Woolover fabricates a product called Fit N Forget™ Beef Calf Cover. The product is designed to fit calves at birth. The jackets are manufactured from wool that is needle punched to a hessian substrate making it completely biodegradable. In three to four weeks the jackets fall off and then biodegrade.
Though the impetus behind the creation of the animal jackets and covers stems from a solemn situation, the new products developed from that time have been making a positive impact on animals and producers for the decades that followed.

COLD WEATHER BUT HOT CATTLE
As I wrote this article, we have received our first snowstorm of the winter and my four little ones could not wait to throw on their snow pants and go play in the white stuff! Me on the other hand, not so excited about leaving the warmth and comfort of my office. It is because they are looking forward to joy and fun and I am dreading frozen waters and/or sick cattle. Either way, it is safe to say that winter is upon us!
FALL MARKETS FLOURISH
this fat cattle deal to continue an upward trend going into the new year and into spring. How high we can go, that is the million-dollar question!
arvest is in full swing, most of the cow chow is or has been put into place for the winter and hopefully the extremely high temperatures are behind us for a little bit. As I write this article while things are dry in several parts of the country, we are getting rain across a large portion of Iowa and the Midwest which is always promising! Now, let’s look at what we have been seeing in the markets.
Now to look at some of the market reports that we have been seeing in the barns. The fat cattle market has been on a hot streak for several weeks, until this past week, when we experienced a slight dip in the market. We have seen some highs in the mid to high forties, but these have been some extremes. Most cash cattle in the country have been trading at forty level or slightly higher the past couple of weeks. I expect there to be a few bumps in the road, but I expect
On the fat cattle side of things, we have been relatively steady and stagnant. We have been stuck in the mid 80’s for most of the past 4 to 6 weeks and this market just doesn’t seem to get much higher. We are al ready at record prices and packers’ margins are minimal, so one must ask how much higher we can real ly get. The futures all say we will be around $2.00 in the spring, and I think we will be, but I think it will be a very slow rise to that point. As numbers continue to be tight and get tighter, I would look for some tops in the barns in the low to mid 90’s over the next month, while the cash market continues to be steady and slowly rise.

The higher fat cattle market is driving a higher price for the feeder cattle market as well, even with the higher feedstuff inputs. We have seen some front end big strings of 800 pounds bringing well into the sixties and some 600-pound cattle bringing into the seventies and eighties. Once again these are some extreme tops. We have been trying to fill up our own lots as fast as possible, as I am not sure the feeder cattle are going to get any cheaper. We have been able to find cattle at cheaper prices than that and so when we do projects they are in the black.
The cull cow and bull market has lagged the fat market, as from all reports there have been around six
percent more last year, making supply of cows. down, which be into next year, cow and bull with the same market. The breeding been up and cently, I heard commercial pairs $2,000 and then can buy all the I want for $1,200 are looking to now is the time reasonably priced with increased are going to be ply over the next Wishing everyone Christmas and

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ANGUS FOUNDATION AWARDS FOUR YOUTH WITH COMMERCIAL CATTLEMEN SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship program supports students using Angus genetics in commercial operations.
The Angus Foundation recognized four outstanding youth in the beef industry and awarded them with the Commercial Cattlemen scholarship. This scholarship supports students in the commercial cattle industry who use, or whose family uses, Angus genetics in their breeding program.
“We are proud to recognize these four individuals for their involvement in the beef industry and for appreciating the value of the Angus breed,” said Jaclyn Boester, Angus Foundation executive director. “Supporting youth in their education is an important part of the Foundation’s mission.”
The scholarships are awarded to students using Angus sires and dams in their commercial cattle operation. Recipients must be pursuing an undergraduate degree or enrolled in a vocational program at an accredited institution of higher education.
Two Angus Foundation representatives, two Angus industry representatives and one beef cattle industry leader make up the Angus Foundation’s scholarship selection committee, which reviews applications. Emphasis is placed on the applicant’s knowledge of the cattle industry and their perspective of the Angus breed.
Since 1998, the Angus Foundation has awarded more than $4.2 million in undergraduate and graduate scholarships. For more information on the Commercial Cattlemen scholarship, visit An-
gusFoundation.org. Applications for the next scholarship cycle will be due May 1, 2024.
2023 Commercial Cattlemen Scholarship recipients:
Addison Hillman grew up raising commercial Angus and Simmental cattle on her family’s farm in Brainerd, Minnesota. She studies animal science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a focus in genetics. In the future, Hillman wants to have a career in beef genetics and plans to continue to be involved in the beef industry.
Abigail Morse grew up in Madison, South Dakota, where her family has a commercial cattle herd with predominantly Angus genetics. She is currently pursuing a degree in animal science at South Dakota State University. Eventually, Morse hopes to become a large animal veterinarian and work primarily with beef cattle.
Bryce Hoeltzel, of Olsburg, Kansas, has a registered Angus and commercial cattle herd on his family’s multigenerational farm. Hoeltzel hopes to obtain a bachelor’s degree in both animal science and industry and natural resource management. He is currently attending a local community college where he is also a member of the livestock judging team. With this, Hoelzel intends to continue raising beef cattle with an emphasis on environmental sustainability.
Jacee Sumpter grew up in the cow-calf industry in Branson, Colorado, where she has a commercial Angus herd. Sumpter studies agribusiness and animal science at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas, where she is also a member of the livestock judging team. In the coming years, she hopes to continue her education at a four-year institution before going home to manage her family’s ranch while continuing to work as a commodities broker through her online business.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ANDREWS HIRED TO SERVE ANGUS ASSOCIATION’S REGION 11
Regional manager Landon Andrews will start mid-September for Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah.
the Angus breed,” Andrews said.
He said he looks forward to working as a resource to support members throughout the four-state Region 11.
“I have deep family roots in the western cattle industry,” Andrews said. “I hope to educate members and commercial breeders of the great programs our association offers.”
All 13 regional managers are full-time staff members of the Association. They work with cattle breeders in their designated regions to promote Angus cattle, improve management practices and assist breeders who want to get started in the Angus business.
Regional managers also work with breeders to make sure their advertising needs are being met through the Angus Journal and Angus Beef Bulletin. They can often be found working Angus sales and shows or representing the Association at livestock conventions, while serving as a liaison between the organization, its membership, users of Angus genetics, industry partners and academia.
A RANCHER’S NOTE TO COACHES by Dan
Fawcett
There’s always been controversy with kids missing practice and having to spend time on the bench if they decide to show livestock. To the coaches (I’m also a coach of youth baseball): You should be seeking these kids who are involved in exhibiting livestock. They will be your hardest working and the best teammates. Before you punish a child for being involved in livestock you need to open your mind and learn about what they are doing. If you take the time to learn, your punishment will change to encouragement for them to be involved. There’s a chance that they might have something bigger going on in life that will help them to be a better player on your team. A trip to the fair doesn’t mean sleeping until 10am, funnel cakes, cotton candy and carnival rides. It’s work. Early mornings and late nights. Do they get to enjoy those pleasures of the fair? Definitely… after the work is done.
Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah will welcome a newly hired regional manager with the American Angus Association in mid-September 2023. Landon Andrews of Spanish Fork City, Utah, brings industry experience to the position as the co-owner and manager of Shandar Angus Ranch.
“There is no other cattle breed with stronger genetics, valuable seedstock and marketability like
“Landon brings a wealth of knowledge to the Association regarding the beef industry,” said Levi Landers, director of field services. “His long-time ties to the breed will serve him well in his new role, and he is undeniably committed to the beef industry and the Angus breed.”
Producers outside of the western region can find contact information for their local regional manager at https://www.angus.org/assoc/RM. Anyone needing assistance is encouraged to contact regional managers.

Success-It’s all in perspective… Winning a championship is a byproduct of hard work… Hard work doesn’t guarantee a championship… 120 days of continuous work washing these projects twice a day. 6+ hours a day in the barn. A project that lasts nearly full year from start to finish and sometimes longer. Late nights after sports and early mornings for what? To win a championship? Yes but no: The hard work that we put into this as a family is to create something more than a championship. We are sculpting these children and every child I can positively impact to be the best, the hardest working, the most driven, and the most passionate while staying humble and kind. We (Kyla and I) demand it. If you happen to have seen our whiteboard in the barn you know about our expectations and what we demand daily.

We had a very successful summer. We won, we got beat, we cried, we celebrated, we worked hard, we learned, we sacrificed and we did it as a team - as a family.
In some states missing school for learning activities such as 4-H and junior shows are an excused absence. A child can not be punished
by a coach for an excused absence. South Dakota has a law in place for kids to be excused for such activities. Have a respectful conversation with a school board member if needed to address repercussion by coaches.
Hollis and Ivy will excel in the game of life compared to their contemporaries because of this sport.
Thank you to all who have helped us teach these kids how to be better and thank you to all the teachers and coaches who take the time to learn about, care about and give support to our youth who work so hard on their projects.
I could not be more proud.

STOCKMAN traight
My name is Jason Upchurch. I grew up in Lineville, Alabama on a commercial beef and poultry farm. I’ve been in or around the cattle business my entire life. As a young person, I was very active in showing Angus cattle. This led to more than just showing cattle as I got older, I started a small herd of Angus of my own. As time passed, my family and I were marketing cattle through various sales and sold bulls to commercial breeders.
In 2002, I attended college at Auburn University where I studied agricultural business and economics. After college, I immediately began a career with a major AI company and managed sales and sales people in two and a half states. In 2006 my wife, BriAnna, and I got married and continued our small herd of Angus cattle.
In 2015, I met Orrin Ingram. I worked with Orrin to help him locate and purchase bulls for his Florida ranch at Escape Ranches. After working together, we came up with a plan to build Ingram Angus. Knowing we had high expectations for Ingram Angus, we felt we needed not only to find the best cattle we could find to build a herd around, but we also needed more help to manage a herd of this size and scale.
In the later portion of 2015, Orrin and I discussed our plan with David Cagle about building one of the premier herds of Angus cattle in the country. The three of us soon realized that not only did we all have similar taste in high quality cattle, but also agreed on the management practices of keeping our herd very functional and practical. So, in late 2015 we formed a partnership and formally broke ground to begin what’s now known as Ingram Angus.
We are very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Orrin in building this herd from the ground up. This allows both David and I to be able to have our families involved in Ingram Angus.”
What about the beef cattle industry excites you the most?
Anymore what excites me the most about the cattle industry is being able to teach my sons, Camden and Bryson, about the business. Seeing them eager to learn and work hard is what gives me the most enjoyment of anything around the cattle business.”

A conversation with everyday Stockmen, Jason Upchurch
What is the most used tool on your farm? How old is it?
The most used tool on our farms is probably our ATV’s. The terrain in South Central Tennessee is pretty steep and rough in places. We use them all day every day and find that it’s easiest for us and our employees to use them because some of our pastures are not the most pleasant places to raise cattle. We feel raising cattle in these conditions helps us provide cattle that can work and thrive in any environment.”
Which animal (any species) has left the greatest impact on you?
One of the most impactful animals in my life would have been a heifer I was showing in 1996. I was a young teenager at the time with a lot to learn, but that heifer fortunately was pretty good. I was able to have a little success that year with that heifer, but what I didn’t realize at the time was by that heifer giving me confidence I attended more shows. By attending more shows, I met more people. Some of the people I met showing Angus cattle have been some of the most influential people in my life.
What is your least favorite job on the farm?
My least favorite job on the farm is proofreading our sale catalogs. It just seems like no matter how many times you go through it there’s still something that gets missed and that drives me crazy. Lol!”
Your favorite non-farm activity to do in your free time?
My favorite non-farm activity is bass fishing. I don’t have a lot of time to go, but it’s my way to clear my head and spend time with family and friends.”
The most important lesson you’ve learned in this business?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned in this business is that you need to purchase cattle from people that intend for you to be successful with your purchases. At Ingram Angus, we strive to produce cattle that can go out and work for our customers. We are not satisfied until we know that our customers’ purchases have made a positive impact for them and their breeding goals.”
UPCOMING SALE: Ingram Angus Fall Production Sale November 10, 2023 - Pulaski, Tenn.
Your go-to sorting apparatus?
We mainly sort cattle in our working facilities and sort them by gate to reduce stress on the cattle. One of our main goals is to provide calm, easy-going cattle that are fun to be around. We feel the easier we work around the cattle the more docile they are when they are sold and go to our customers.”
Describe your best day.
The best day for me on the farm is sale day. At Ingram Angus, we have been blessed with a lot of customers nationwide and even internationally. Seeing people travel and bring their families to our sale is one of the most humbling feelings I have ever experienced.”
