projects. Turn to the cover and take another look at that little girl and her heifer. Doesn’t that image bring you back to your favorite project? I bet most parents can still name the most loved animals in the barn per kid, regardless of how old that kid might be today. What was your favorite project? I have a soft spot for Hereford steers myself. I came across a meme posted to Facebook by Hoge Livestock that read,“the biggest misconception is people think the animal is the project, but in all reality, the kid is the project.” As a parent just boarding the crazy train of projects, shows, endless shitty jeans, and wood chip-filled everythings, those words reminded me why. So, if, like me, you are sometimes overwhelmed by your husband’s lofty plans for next summer, rip this page out, highlight that text, and put it on your bulletin board. This issue is just packed with awesome operations and ample opportunities to start those new projects. I invite you to take a look!

he W4 Ranch was established six decades ago, when James Walker invested in 1,000 acres of land in central Texas. Today that land, known as W4 Ranch, headquartered in Morgan, TX, has expanded to 12,000 acres with a herd of roughly 1,000 Hereford females. The ranch, currently owned and operated by James Walker’s son, Joe, and James’ grandson, Joey, hosts two sales a year where cattlemen from across the nation have the opportunity to purchase sound cattle with proven records and the backing of the Walker family. James’ legacy extends to his great

grandchildren too as Joey’s children, Sydney and Tripp, represent the fourth generation of Walkers to raise Herefords on the ranch.

W4 Ranch has built a reputation of providing cattlemen, both registered and commercial, with high quality Herefords. Jeff Chaffin, the ranch manager who began working for W4 Ranch in 2001, said, “We are trying to raise a product that can benefit commercial producers as they raise the calves they need for their F-1 operation or perform in their feedlots or garner top dollar at market. We also want to raise a product that can benefit the

registered breeder and provide the genetics and performance their herd needs. Whatever the program, we hope we have enough diversity and choice within our herd that we can complement any operation that purchases cattle from W4 Ranch no matter their end goal.”

This fall will mark the 26th annual bull sale for the ranch. The sale on October 15, 2021, in addition to a spring sale in April, provides an opportunity for cattlemen to purchase bulls and females from W4 Ranch. Providing high quality range bulls is a primary focus for the

Producing top quality Hereford bulls is a primary focus for W4 ranch near Morgan, Texas.

THE HILL At W4 Ranch, bulls are weaned and put directly in a feedlot situation (bypassing creep feeding) until their yearling weight is recorded. At that time, they head to “The Hill” where their ability to travel will be tested and fortified. Chaffin

stated that The W4 Hill has been the ranch’s most successful tactic in raising bulls. “It’s a mountainous area covering 100 acres with a hill in the middle of the property. We feed on the west side and water on the east side, creating a lot of travel for our bulls. It’s during this time that they build strong feet and hocks – it’s really our version of an athletic training program for our future herd bulls.”

Joe Walker, owner W4 Ranch

W4 Ranch feeds and develops their bulls at their Bosque County, Texas location. At any given time, you can find 250-300 bulls on The Hill. These bulls will then be marketed around 18 – 24 months of age at the ranch’s annual bull sales and private treaty.

operation “As we developed our program and sought out new genetics to add, we were (and still are) striving for moderate birth weight bulls that have muscle, and shape, and most importantly, are sound, functional bulls that can travel. We sell a lot of bulls in the Southeast and these bulls need to be able to work in hot, humid conditions,” Chaffin stated.

PARTNERSHIPS

September 2021

The herd bulls used by W4 Ranch are heavily influenced by genetics from the Holden Ranch, Cooper Ranch, Churchill Cattle, all from Montana, and Colyer Herefords of Idaho.

18

“Our herd boasts a healthy amount of Churchill Cattle genetics. We own cattle together and have several female donors that are part of that partnership and our current herd sires are out of their program too. The cattle have transitioned well from the northern climate to our warm temperatures,” Chaffin shared, “They offer a superior product in the Hereford breed. Equally as important is the way they conduct business. They are great partners, honest and trustworthy, creating a combination for a great relationship.”

W4 Ranch females are bred to have muscle and shape, strong maternal qualities and good udders. These females are often purchased by commercial cattleman to be used in the production of Hereford x Brahman F-1s. The ranch also seeks to improve its genetics through A.I. and embryo transfer, as well as utilizing performance and EPD data in their genetics selections. When it comes to marketing their cattle, W4 Ranch believes it is important to leave the county lines to be seen and judged by others. “Getting our cattle out of Bosque county also allows others to see our product and learn more about our operation,” Chaffin pointed out. Because of this, they market their cattle annually at the special sales held in conjunction

with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. Their pen of females and graded bulls have historically brought home honors at these sales, reflecting the high quality of cattle the ranch produces. They are also active supporters of the Texas Hereford Association (THA) and American Hereford Association programs and consign a pen of females each January to the THA event at the Fort Worth Stock Show. However, W4 Ranch primarily markets their cattle through the annual sales held on the ranch; one in the spring and the one in the fall. At these sales the bulls will go as single lots and the females, geared for commercial producers, will be sold in groups. Repeat customers are always in the seats, adding

MANAGING EARLY WEANED CALVES E

September 2021

arly weaning is typically defined as weaning before calves are 150 days of age. In extreme cases beef calves may be weaned at 45 days of age, but more commonly early weaned calves are over 90 days of age. Early weaning may be advantageous in times of drought, when cows are in a confinement system, or as a body condition

management tool for very young or old cows. Once weaning has occurred, the cow, now without the demands of lactation, can be maintained on poor quality forage and little to no supplement. Higher quality feed, which may be in limited supply, can be reserved for the rapidly growing calf.

NUTRITION Milk is a great source of nutrition for the young calf. With the removal of milk in the diet through weaning, another source of high quality nutrition needs to be provided if the same level of daily gain is desired. Although young beef calves begin eating solid food

Because milk bypasses the rumen and goes straight to the abomasum via closure of the esophageal groove, it is a very digestible source of protein and energy, available to the animal for bone and muscle growth, as opposed to being available as a nitrogen source for the microbial population in the rumen. Supplementing a protein source that is not easily digested by the microbes and is then available at the tissue level can help support gain without the calves depositing fat instead of lean growth. Distillers grains, a by-product of the ethanol industry is an example of a protein supplement that is a good source of rumen undegradable protein for the young growing calf. An example diet for a 300-pound calf that would support 2.0 pounds/ day gain would be 3 pounds of dried distillers and 7 pounds of a 50:50 blend of oat hay and alfalfa. Zinc and copper are very important minerals for boosting immunity so providing a good vitamin and trace mineral package free choice or in a total mixed ration is important to the young calf as well. Water is also important for the health and wellbeing of the calf and should be

THE STOCKMAN

clean and accessible at all times.

MANAGEMENT Providing at least 12 inches of bunk or feeding space per calf allows all the calves access to feed without overcrowding. The early weaned calf is likely smaller than traditionally weaned calves, so making sure the calf can reach the feed in the bunk is critical. This is also true of the water tank. Making sure the tank is banked well, and the tank fills to the edge quickly so calves always have reachable water is critically important. After weaning, the goal is to increase feed intake as quickly as possible. However, without adequate water access, this process is delayed, as is nutrient intake, which can lead to depressed immunity and growth. Determining that the pen and bunk line will effectively contain bawling, pacing lightweight calves before weaning will alleviate some headaches later. A pen that traditionally holds 500-700 pound calves may not contain a 300-pound calf as well. Fenceline weaning, where cows are on one side, and calves on the other, may also be a bit more challenging with the smaller calf who may be able to crawl through the fence. Space to spread out in a clean pen can also help prevent post-weaning illness. Producers should also visit with their local veterinarian about vaccination schedules and protocols that would be most effective for the early weaned calf as well as developing a protocol for treating illness if it occurs, well before weaning takes place.

MARKETING Even with a price slide for lighter

weight calves, the early weaned calf will usually not bring as much as a calf at a traditional weaning weight. Fortunately, these young calves are very efficient and with proper nutrition can gain as well or better than calves left to nurse the cow. Evaluating the cost of feed and the predicted value of the calf are critical, especially if early weaning is due to drought, as harvested feed resources are typically expensive in those situations. Once weaned, these calves may fit well in an annual forage grazing backgrounding program. Additionally, after a short growing period (approximately 90 days) these calves may be put on a finishing diet. They traditionally are very efficient during the finishing phase and have a high percentage of upper 2/3 choice carcasses. However, as stated earlier, feed and labor costs should be evaluated against the predicted value of the calves at each marketing point. Early weaning is a strategy that can be advantageous in several scenarios. Feeding, management, and marketing needs to be evaluated prior to weaning so the best options as well as best management practices are selected. For more information on weaning calves, producers can access NebGuide G2047 Management of Early Weaned Calves or NebGuide G2057 Management, Health, and Nutritional Considerations for Weaned Calves. These can also be found at https:// extensionpubs.unl.edu. University of Nebraska - Lincoln, UNL Beef Interviews with the authors of BeefWatch newsletter articles become available throughout the month of publication and are accessible at https:// go.unl.edu/podcast.

September 2021

by 30 days of age, the rumen is still small in the young calf. Therefore, a nutrient dense, highly digestible diet with a fast passage rate will allow the calf to consume, digest, and absorb the nutrients needed. Diets containing residues or low quality hay which are often poorly digested, slow the rate of passage through the digestive tract and therefore, limit intake, which in turn can limit gain. A mature cow has a large rumen and has the potential to consume enough low quality feed to meet her needs in most cases. A young calf needs to be able to eat small frequent meals, as the rumen is so much smaller.

Jimmy Linthicum sets the bar high at every level.

H

September 2021

ave you seen Rudy? The heart-warming story of the undersized football player who scored the winning touchdown for Notre Dame and was carried out of the stadium is one of an underdog overcoming his circumstances to be a hero. Now, imagine if Rudy had become legendary coach, Nick Saban, after that game. A general on and off the field; a recruiter of exceptional talent; a leader, mentor, consummate winner, a fierce competitor, and a man who will not give up. That’s James C. “Jimmy” or “JCL” Linthicum, Sr. who overcame a less-than-ideal situation at an early age to become a legend in the show ring.

34

Jimmy was struck by meningitis as a toddler, and though he survived, he was left completely deaf. After attending a boarding

school for the deaf until age 13, he started public junior high school. His return to the family farm gave him a renewed passion for agriculture. His father, Ellsworth, founded the Howard County Beef Club in Maryland, and Jimmy exhibited his first steer. He stood 20th in a class of 21. JCL has been described by friends as a fierce and formidable competitor, and this was evident at a young age. Just three years after that near bottom-of-the-table finish, he showed the champion steer in all three breeds, Angus, Shorthorn, and Hereford, and the Grand Champion overall steer at the county level and at the Maryland State Fair. “He got the bug, and he got it bad,” says his daughter, Cheryl. He attributes his early success to his parents and being a great student to some of the best cattlemen of the

day, but those closest to him would say he just out-worked everyone else. Four children joined JCL and his first wife, Bettye: Cheryl, James, Jr., Ted, and Tim. Today, JCL, his wife, Regina, and Cheryl, operate the 270-acre ranch near Welch, Okla. Dr. Cheryl Linthicum is currently a professor at University of Texas at San Antonio and is well-known as a judge herself. At only 11 years of age, Cheryl was delivering Jimmy’s reasons in the show ring and has since traveled the world to nearly 500 shows with Jimmy. At 18, she began an illustrious career as a judge alone judging over 400 shows at all levels. In 1962, at just 21, JCL co-owned and fitted the National Champion Polled Hereford Bull, HAB Victor Mischief, who was sold for

$102,000, a record at the time. He traveled to Jackson, Miss., to fit and exhibit Victor Mischief. Although the bull was not tall by current standards, he was so wide, the doors of the hotel where he was sold had to be cut out to accommodate him. The calf was a ‘Rudy’ story too as he was stricken with pneumonia and nursed back to health by Jimmy. Jimmy wouldn’t quit on the calf, and he was rewarded with an out-standing show animal and a big feather in his hat.

In gratitude for saving the calf, his owner gave JCL half-interest in the bull. Shortly thereafter, he became an in-demand fitter with a stable of up to 75 cattle in two barns at any time. His efforts sent many champion and reserve champion bulls and heifers to the backdrop and earned him a reputation as a formidable competitor in the make-up area. “Jimmy was all business until after pictures were taken. Some may

have thought him stand-offish, but that was just Jimmy. He took care of business until after the last champion was chosen,” said Bill Schermer one of his early competitors. “He’d give you the shirt off his back, but he wanted to win at least as much as any of us. If he beat you, it’s because he out-worked you. But when the show was over, he’d give you a hug, and you’d be best friends again.” In 1978, Jimmy and his fami-

ly relocated from Dayton Md. to Welch, Okla., where they would start a successful Limousin program. The Limousin herd eventually grew to 150 cows producing many champions for Jimmy’s children, grandchildren, and customers. The original Limousin herd was dispersed in 2000, but the Linthicum family still remains very competitive in the Limousin and

JCL stepped into the ring as a judge for the first time in the early 1970s. His first show was a district steer show in northern Virginia. Later that year, he was asked to judge the

West Virginia State Fair’s steer show. Over 150 steers were shown that day, and shortly after the champion was chosen, every steer in the ring got away from their showmen. Jimmy is well-known for his excitement in the ring and his booming voice now, but the exhibitors that day were not prepared! In his first 15 years of judging, JCL with Cheryl as his reasons

The list of awards Jimmy has amassed is a long one. Most notably, he was nominated and accepted to the Western Stock Show Association. He has exhibited ten Champion and Reserve Champion bulls and females along with judging eight breeds In the Yards and On the Hill. He has in incredible streak of 50 years as an exhibitor in Denver starting in 1970. His daughter,

Cheryl, will join him in 2022 as an inductee into that illustrious group. In addition to the aforementioned awards in Kansas City and Fort Worth, the Linthicum family has bred and shown hundreds of banner-winners at all levels. This year, JCL was awarded Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor at the National Red Angus show in Oklahoma City, Okla. The focus of JCL Red Angus is structure and producing high-qual-

ity females that will excel not only in the show ring but also in the pasture. Females must be sound from the ground up and be able to cover ground after the backdrop, and the Linthicum family prides themselves on turning out cattle that do well in both situations. JCL Red Angus has a sale each spring and fall comprised of the top open females plus bred heifers, select embryos, and semen. This year’s sale is Monday, October 4.

Connie Weishaar of Reva, SD. Photo by Darrell Dodds.

The term “ranch wife” could be used to describe Connie Weishaar, but there is much more to this South Dakotan. Growing up on the Evangelical Lutheran Church Ranch in Belfield, North Dakota, Connie Weishaar learned to ride, rope, brand and make her own way in life. She instilled the same drive in her children, Jodi and Seth. Today, she continues to be true to her heritage on the ranch she works with her husband, livestock auctioneer Lynn, in Reva, South Dakota. As though calving more than 200 head of cattle each year was not a large enough task, Weishaar was the first woman to be elected to the regional Grand Electric Co-Op Board, where she served for 12 years. Still an all-around hand, this 70-year-old horsewoman is anything but stereotypical.

My grandfather bought a couple of quarters near Belfield [North Dakota], and the ranch next to it was called the Evangelical Lutheran Church Ranch. Dad worked for them for 20 years. When the church ranch decided to sell out, Dad bought it. I’ve got two younger brothers, Larry and Rocky. There wasn’t anyone else around, so we played together a lot. We were horseback all day, and the only rules we had were to be home by 6 and tell mom which pastures we were headed to. What a way to grow up, you know? It was just us kids working with Dad. We spent a lot of time with him; he was real laid back and encouraging. Mom was really ahead of her time. After she’d passed away, women would come up to me and say what a feminist and strong person she was. She did so much for me. Mom just didn’t do what other women did. If she felt like going out in the hay field, she went. If she felt like dressing up, she did. We raised and broke horses. I had a little mare I’d ridden the summer before. I needed to go to the neighbors’ a couple of miles away, so I brought her up. I rode

her in the pen a bit and headed out. I got through the first gate, and she bucked me off and took off running. She broke my leg. I knew nobody was home except my brother, and he was sleeping. So, I crawled back to the house where I was close enough he could hear me yell. My knees were just full of cactus after crawling that mile. I met Lynn in college at North Dakota State. After school, Lynn was ranching on a leased place in Bison [South Dakota]; we were there 13 years. I was teaching a lot then, home economics and basic needs. I tried to teach [students] there is more to the world than the limited view they have of high school. There is so much more out there to appreciate. I started being at home to run the ranch when Lynn started traveling [to sales and auctions] so much. I was never able to go because I had the kids or calving or something was going on. The solitude has never bothered me much. I guess being raised on a ranch helped me out. We’re a tight community. I think the kids growing up thought they had a lot of mothers, and if they did something wrong, well, everyone would know. By the same token, if something was wrong everybody tried to help. It’s a nice feeling to have that kind of support. Men tend to have a plan to do something—Plan A. I think women have Plan A, B, C, and something will work. You are a little more creative in how you get things done.

Jodi was born in October, and that spring I packed her in front of me on the horse to check calves and such. When she was 3, we had a little pony I led her on. Then, by 4, she could ride a big horse all by herself, and Seth was 2, so he was riding by himself, too. You didn’t think that you were raising your kids different doing this kind of thing. I just had a lot to do and figured out how to get it done.

You know, mules have always fascinated me. I had Festus and he was phenomenal. One time, I was up trying to bring in this old Hereford who was just running through the rocks. He took out after her and I came back with blood running down my arms and neck— he was not letting her get away! He was cowy and fun to ride. It’s part of the fun to get a little grief riding my mules. Ranching is a creative career. I really always loved the ranch and always wanted to ranch. It gives you a really good base for life. It makes you able to meet a lot of people and do a lot of different things that not everybody can do.

Granddad was born in 1860 in Illinois, ran away to Texas, and came up as wagon boss for the Sword and Dagger Ranch. He was 60 years old when my mom was born and died the year after I was born.

KEEP OR CULL THE STAND M

and foremost, we need to try to make feed from whatever we have growing. Kochia, waterhemp, and pigweed stands are likely strong on these acres, and they need to be cut off. Cows will eat them, especially if they are ensiled. Baleage is the best option for a lower-yielding weed field as most of these stems are too thick to cure as dry hay. Take your baleage. Even though it looks like garbage, it still has feed value.

So how do we combat this ugly field and salvage any feed? First

Now, we need to decide if your alfalfa or grass is worth keeping

for next year. This scenario is no different than the crazy cow that took you, stepped on her calf to kill it, but did raise a big calf that one time. Any alfalfa stand that has less than 6 plants per sq. foot isn’t worth salvaging. Like the cow, it just isn’t worth keeping, even though you hope it’ll be ok.

September 2021

any cattlemen in the upper Midwest and northern plains took a gut punch on establishing perennial forages this spring. The obvious lack of moisture for these shallow seeded crops caused inconsistent emergence, resulting in stand loss—plus spotty showers combined with excess heat fried seedlings, making room for opportunistic weeds. Now, we’ve got thin, weedy stands and a lack of hay and need to decide to keep or cull it.

before a killing frost. Getting this planted in the fall versus the spring will speed up the first cutting the following year.

to maximize the feed potential from every acre. Cull and salvage value or improve and keep based on realistic expectations.

If you have a stand of 6-10 plants per sq. ft, think about over-seeding. Think of this like your 2-year-old cow in a BCS of a 3. She’s got value, but she’ll require some TLC. Ideally, we want 8-15 plants per sq. foot for a healthy, long-lived field, so we need to bump our plant population. Alfalfa builds an auto-toxicity within the plants that won’t allow new alfalfa plants to grow. This auto-toxicity will be present after the first year of establishment. That means we’ve only got the first year to inter-seed into it with alfalfa. We generally recommend about 6070% of the seeding rate you used the first time when over-seeding.

Triticale, forage winter wheat, and cereal rye can be planted from Mid-August through September and will produce a harvestable feed by next June. REVIEWS OF SYNCHRONIZATION PROGRAMS A

s we start to wrap up summer, it’s an excellent time to review how things went for the past breeding season. Here are some points from a couple of synchronization programs we used. We did use a new synchronization program this year called the 7&7 Synch. We found this schedule worked quite well, and we definitely felt like we saw a higher percent of actual standing heats with this program. This is likely due to the tighter synchronization you will get from using prostaglandin as a presynch at the program’s start; thus, more cows will ovulate in a tighter window of time. Also, the fertility on this program was excellent. We have observed that a high percentage of cows will start to cycle about 12 hours sooner than with a typical 7-day CIDR program (7-day CO Synch + CIDR). So pull your

CIDRS later in the day so they will line up with a scheduled transfer or AI date. For most of our clients, the 7-day CIDR program has remained the workhorse synch program. For many, the extra trip through the chute required for the 7&7 Synch during a busy time of year is hard, especially if they have calves at side to sort off. Also, the 7&7 Synch is a week longer and takes more advanced planning. For both programs, the cows that don’t have standing heats by 72 hours after removing CIDRS, we have recommended a GnRH injection. Of these non-responders, we will transfer embryos into any cow with an acceptable corpus luteum (CL) 7 days later. In our experience, embryos transferred into these GNRH cows have had pregnancy rates similar to the cows that express

standing estrus. For the non-estrus recipients with a good CL off of a GnRH shot, we use a stage 4 or 5 embryo to stage them properly for the day we perform transfers. When we schedule the transfers, we will make the appointment ten days after removing CIDRS; the GnRH cows would be considered a 6.5-day cow if we start transfers in the morning ten days after CIDR removal. If using many IVF embryos, it can be difficult to come up with any stage 4 or 5 embryos as an IVF will typically be a stage 6 or 7 embryo. We ran into this situation fairly regularly this summer as more IVF embryos are being used. In most cases, we would try to save stage 5 IVF embryos for these cows, and in many situations, we would have to use stage 6 or 7 embryos if there were many GnRH recipients. This is not perfect timing for the embryo, but we have had better results than expected when transferring stage 7 IVF embryos into GnRH cows.

cases, there were cows that were not observed in estrus but had a good CL. Both owners reported good pregnancy rates in the recipient groups overall. I did feel that we kicked out more of these recipients for not having a good CL; we may have been able to use more of them if the GnRH had been given to stimulate ovulation.

The CIDR programs continue to be the mainstay for recipient synchronization. They offer better control of the cycle and often will induce a fertile estrus in a cow

that has not yet started cycling. Programs that utilize only prostaglandin can still work and will be cheaper but will not induce estrus unless the cows have been actively cycling and are in the luteal phase of the cycle at the time of the injection. learn more collisionembryo.com Dr. Vince Collison is co-owner of Collison Embryo | Collison Veterinary Services PAC in Rockwell City, Iowa.

September 2021

As a final point, on the GnRH cows, we only use them if they have a good palpable CL. On ultrasound, many that don’t palpate an obvious CL will still show small

amounts of luteal tissue in the ovary. In our experience, most of these will not maintain a pregnancy as well, probably because the small CL is not producing enough progesterone. We are more critical of the CL on a GnRH cow versus one we know expressed a good standing estrus.

Where did you learn to cook?

I learned a lot about cooking through trial and error! Having to step up and cook for farm visitors, I was thrown into the deep end of entertaining. My husband, Jack, and I even owned a restaurant for a while.

Favorite tips and tricks?

I like to cook things my family enjoys eating. Being from Ohio and Indiana I’ve picked up a few different cooking styles and recipes that were not as well known here in Missouri. Sugar, cheese, butter, and celery salt are often secret ingredients in my recipes. Using any one of these can make any dish more flavorful!

I love to entertain in the Fall! Whether inside or out by the fire, I will always keep freezable appetizers on hand that are easy to bake or microwave. (Empanadas or Bacon Swirls) A hearty soup (Indian Summer Soup) that I can serve with pulled pork or shredded beef sandwiches is always great to have simmering ahead of time. And finish the evening with something apple or pumpkin (Pumpkin Coffee Cake). I usually have an apple sangria for my lady friends and I to enjoy as well! It is soo good!

Cowboy approved recipes used by our favorite country cooks.

My husband, Jack, and I raised our sons, Cameron and Carter, north of Kansas City, MO. There we have an Angus farm and host three online sales per year selling show cattle. After our youngest son, Carter, completed his junior Angus career, we turned his show heifers into donor cows. The Lucy family and Princess (Pebbles) family have done us proud. We really enjoy working with the juniors that have purchased heifers from our program. Everything we do revolves around helping them succeed with their projects.

Only bull in the breed for his combination of: BW 1.1 WW 99 YW 169 Marbling 1.73 0209 is a rare individual because he is still getting explosive growth in a moderate package, which may also explain his low DMI to growth spread. We have noticed that most high growth and $C individuals for some reason have bad feet scores. The dam of 0209, Baldridge Isabel E080 is averaging top 15% Claw and top 10% Angle EPDs on 34 progeny.

E080 is passing efficiency on to her progeny. Her calves all have extra rib which we think is why we are seeing that they are exceptionally easy keepers. Another trait that E080 stamps on her progeny is her docility. She is averaging a 33 docility score on 34 progeny.

We thought it would be important to share the maternal side of this unique individual. The dam Baldridge Isabel E080 puts it together better than any cow we have ever had. From BW to growth she does a great job but that is only the beginning. She also stamps them with efficiency, docility, great feet, carcass, and $ values. To top it off almost everyone who has appraised her progeny will almost always comment on the nice Aberdeen Angus head her calves have. They really do have that eye appeal.

In the News GREAT NORTHERN LIVESTOCK EXPO ANNOUNCED Cheyenne, Wyo. – The inaugural Great Northern Livestock Exposition with $80,000 in cash prizes available to exhibitors will be held the last two weeks in November at the Laramie County Events Complex in Cheyenne. The Great Northern was formed by a small group of ranchers for ranchers. The event is aimed at preserving our nation’s western heritage, giving stockmen from across the county the opportunity to showcase and promote elite genetics. The event will be held at the all-new Event Center at Archer – an indoor barn and show ring with a capacity of 900-head of haltered cattle. “Archer” is temperature-controlled with an air filtration system. The two outdoor arenas with covered grandstands will house the stock dog trials, bull pen shows and tie-outs.

The 2021 livestock event will feature open and junior beef cattle breed shows with cattle stalled and shown under the same roof, as well pen shows for bulls stalled and shown in the adjacent arenas. Point shows will take place for the following breeds: American Highland, Charolais, Chianina, Limousin, Maine-Anjou, Miniature Hereford and Simmental. $10,000 will be awarded to exhibitors of the supreme champion bull and the supreme champion female during the Great Northern Open Supreme Galas. In addition, the junior show supreme champion female exhibitor will receive $10,000. The Great Northern “All-American” Angus Female Sale, featuring elite genetics, will also take place. Sale Barn Study

A review of the current cattle market.

contributed article by Kirk Lynch Lynch Livestock Inc. and Humeston Livestock Exchange, Humeston, Iowa humestonlivestockexchange.com

FALL IS HERE I

n the blink of an eye, another summer is winding down. State Fairs are here and gone, calves are starting to get weaned, and harvest will be upon us before we know it. Since my last article, some of us have caught some timely and important rains, and there seems to be a lot of optimism heading into the fall. I, for one, am very bullish on the cattle markets and think we are in for a good fall and winter.

September 2021

As I write this article, we are in the 20th straight week where cash live fat cattle have traded with a $4 range. It feels like the fat market is just about to burst through, and we should have some higher prices continuing into the winter and next year. We have seen fats bringing up into the $1.30 range in the barns, with some tops in the country bringing in the mid-high 20’s. I would look for the cattle supply to stay current as people move fat cattle quicker with the higher price of

78

feedstuffs. We have seen Holsteins bring in the low $1.20’s mostly because they are hard to find. The feeder market has been on fire. We have been seeing lighter calves as well as yearlings bringing a king’s ransom. This is very encouraging for the cow/calf producers and backgrounders but makes it challenging for feedlots with the high prices of Cost of Gain. There will be a lot of money tied up in this calf crop by the time they are finished, but the futures say we will get a lot of money for them when all is said and done.

and bulls. The bred cow and heifer market has been very solid as well. I think bred cows and heifers will take off this fall and winter as people sell calves and some of their crops. I believe there is some opportunity here to buy some of these females early in the fall, as I don’t see them getting any cheaper than now. I hope everyone has a safe harvest and a great start to fall! If you need anything feel free to give me a call.

The weigh-up cow and bull market continue to be very strong. As we go into fall and more of them are culled after weaning and preg checking, I would expect a little bit of a dip in the market. I can’t imagine many of these cows and bulls will be feed very long, so I also think there will be an enhanced premium for the heavy fed cows

STOCKMAN

traight The most important lesson you’ve learned in this business? Most used tool on your farm and how old is it? Probably the most used tool on our farm is the Silencer Chute at headquarters.”

Describe your best/worst day. I would say the best days are ones with no problems and healthy cattle!”

Your go-to sorting apparatus?

How to just let go and rely on faith when things may not be going in the right direction.”

What about the beef cattle industry excites you the most? The opportunity we have to continue to strive for better and more efficient cattle.”

I don’t think I really have one!”

What is your least favorite job on the farm? Picture day for the sale catalog.”

Which animal (any species) has left the greatest impact on you? Angus cow 8009. She was a 6807 out of an EXT cow. She made an impact with her phenotype and was probably one of the best females I’ve ever seen, or had any anything to do with.”

September 2021

Your favorite non-farm activity to do in your free time? My favorite thing to do outside of the farm is hauling my daughter to steer and heifer shows.”

Wilks Ranch Manager, Aaron Kiser with his family. 86

THE STOCKMAN

A conversation with everyday Stockmen,

Aaron Kiser Wilks Ranch - Eastland, TX

About the Stockman. I was raised in a small town north of Abilene, Texas. My family raised crops and ran cattle mostly on farm ground. I started raising Angus cattle when I was in junior high, shortly after converting our commercial cows to registered Angus. I have been involved with the Angus breed ever since.

I have been working for Wilks Ranch in Eastland, Texas for about 8 ½ years. Our focus is on balance from phenotype, growth, and carcass merit. My wife, Krystal, and I have two kids, Kaylan and Kazz.” learn more wilksranch.com
